Work on new Providence Catholic commons area to begin in summer

fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Construction of an addition to Providence Catholic High School is expected to begin this summer.

Providence officials plan to add a 21,800-square-foot student commons and cafeteria space to the southwest portion of the New Lenox private school. The addition is expected to be complete later this year or early next year.

The increased space will make it possible for the school to consolidate four lunch periods into two, freeing up more time for new electives as well as providing a welcoming central space for students to gather, school officials said.

“It will be a place for [students] to go and to be,” said the Rev. Richard McGrath, Providence president.

He said the project is being funded through a capital campaign to raise $6 million. Since the campaign began in July, he said $3.5 million has been raised for the project, and the school will have $1 million in reserves to use as well.

“People have been very generous thus far,” McGrath said.

The new space will include a larger modern kitchen, a food court, a concession space, additional restrooms and a new entrance that will feature a “spacious roundabout pickup [and] drop-off area,” according to Providence’s website.

Providence officials plan to celebrate the school’s 100th anniversary next year, and they consider the project part of an effort to build the school’s legacy by planning for the future.

McGrath said Providence is fortunate to be near enrollment capacity and that its “financial standing is very strong,” with balanced budgets and a healthy endowment fund of $4.3 million.

The school’s enrollment this year is 1,036, according to its website.

Since 2002, the school has replaced both its gym floors; improved air circulation; refurbished hallways; installed turf, track and lighting; upgraded its sports facilities; and installed wireless technology, among other improvements.

Board hopefuls discuss enrollment, funding, outreach during forum

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Candidates for the Joliet Junior College board discussed at a forum how they would tackle increasing enrollment, working with college officials and fostering communication with students and the community.

Seven of the nine candidates running for the JJC Board of Trustees met at the college Thursday for a forum held by the college’s student government.

The candidates who attended were Margaret Hornung, George Gaspar, Bob Bodach, Philip Juarez and current trustees Alicia Morales, Patty Deiters and Dan O’Connell. Trustee Mike O’Connell and candidate John “Jake” Mahalik were not in attendance.

The issue of JJC’s student enroll-

ment came up during a question about sustainability. JJC officials have been focusing on increasing enrollment since it declined from its peaks between 2009 and 2013.

Morales said the college has a state funding problem but also its own budgeting and enrollment issues. She recommended college officials be more assertive in looking at the enrollment numbers and how they can be raised.

“If we raised enrollment, we wouldn’t need to be raising tuition or your tax dollars,” she said.

Hornung, a nurse practitioner, said she knows enrollment has leveled off and decreased since the Great Recession, and a question that needs to be asked is how JJC can engage students in the community.

City Council candidate: I was detained Inspector general says meeting was ‘cordial’

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Joliet City Council candidate in Tuesday’s election now is contending that she was forced by Mayor Bob O’Dekirk to speak to the city’s inspector general and was detained while being questioned about how she obtained the addresses of city police officers.

Rachel Ventura provided The Herald-News with a copy of a letter that contains the complaints, which she said was mailed Thursday to the agency that regulates attorneys in Illinois.

Ventura appeared willing to talk to Inspector General Chris Regis when the matter arose at a City Council meeting March 21.

But by the next day, Ventura said she should not have been questioned

by Regis.

In the letter to the Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission, Ventura made complaints against O’Dekirk and Regis, both of whom are attorneys.

She wrote that the mayor “informed me three times that I had to speak & meet with the City of Joliet Inspector.”

She describes the meet- Rachel ing with Regis, in which Ventura she was accompanied by her two children and a local community leader as being “detained in his office with the door closed.”

O’Dekirk said the characterization of his comments was “a bold-faced lie, and it’s being done for political purposes.”

Regis called the allegation of detention “absurd.”

“Our meeting was very cordial, and she was very cooperative,” Regis said.

He said Ventura never asked to leave the meeting.

which is captured on video from the council meeting on the city’s website, shows him asking her to meet with the inspector general to clear up questions of how she obtained the names and addresses of Joliet police officers. Regis already was looking into the matter.

“The inspector general’s here. Could you speak to him afterwards?” O’Dekirk asked at one point.

“Absolutely,” Ventura said.

Later, when O’Dekirk appeared to be trying to wrap up the discussion, he said, “Again, if you could speak after the meeting, I would appreciate if you could help clear it up.”

“Sure, I’d be happy to,” Ventura said.

The matter came up publicly when a police union leader spoke during a public comment segment of the meeting and questioned how Ventura obtained a list of police officers’ addresses for a campaign mailing directed to Joliet police.

O’Dekirk said city officials were concerned that someone at City Hall had released the addresses and that the in-

spector general was looking into the matter.

Regis plans to make a report on his findings Monday at the next council meeting.

Ventura told the mayor and council at the March 21 meeting that she obtained the addresses by cross-checking names of police officers, which are listed on the city’s website, with voter records from the county clerk’s office.

Ventura walked over to Regis after the meeting to speak with him.

But in the letter, she wrote that Regis “approached me and ordered me to grab my belongings and follow him to his office.”

Ventura, when asked by The Herald-News, acknowledged that it was she who approached Regis but said she felt forced to speak with him because of her exchange with the mayor during the meeting.

“When I walked away from the podium, I did feel I had to speak with [Regis] because that’s what I was told by the mayor,” Ventura said.

Pair of furniture retailers plan to open stores in city

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Two furniture retailers plan to open stores in Joliet.

Bob’s Discount Furniture and Art Van PureSleep plan to open stores near the Louis Joliet Mall. The Art Van store is a mattress store.

Bob’s Discount Furniture is renovating the former Sports Authority space at 2700 Plainfield Road in the Louis Joliet Pointe Shopping Center.

The retailer is targeting a May opening, Joliet Economic Development Director Steve Jones said.

Art Van, a furniture retailer that also has a chain of mattress stores, has one of its PureSleep stores slated for new space being developed at the former site of a Pizza Hut restaurant, Jones said.

The site at 2901 Plainfield Road is being redeveloped into a strip mall after the Pizza Hut building was demolished this month.

Art Van PureSleep will take up 3,500 square feet, Jones said. Also going into the new space are Aspen Dental at 3,500 square feet and an AT&T store at 1,584 square feet.

Jones noted that home furnishings is a category identified as a market need after a retail study of the mall area that was contracted by the city.

Bob’s Discount Furniture in particular fits that category, he said.

“This helps fill a market need for what we need here in Joliet,” he said.

Will Road to close at Kankakee River for bridge replacement

Starting Saturday, Will Road (also known as Covered Bridge Road) will be closed at the Kankakee River for a bridge replacement, according to a news release from the Grundy County Highway Department.

The detour for motorists will be: From Will Road at Pine Bluff Road, take Pine Bluff/Lorenzo Road east to Interstate 55 north, follow I-55 north to Arsenal Road, turn left at the stoplight onto west Frontage Road (marked as I-55 south), turn right onto Frontage Road after 1 mile – do not re-enter I-55 – take Frontage Road south to Blodgett Road, take Blodgett Road west to Will Road.

The project is expected to take about six months. Will County will be administrating the project. For information, call the Will County Highway Department at 815-727-8476.

Joliet Fire Department to conduct first phase of hydrant testing JOLIET – The Joliet Fire Department is entering the first phase of its annual hydrant testing, according to a news release from the city of Joliet.

The testing program will be conduct-

ed between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. The hydrant testing will continue for about six weeks, depending on the weather.

During phase one, testing will take place in these areas: • Station No. 3, 450 E. Laraway Road – bound by Interstate 80 to the north, Gougar Road east, Manhattan Road south and South Vetter Road west; • Station No. 6, 2049 Oneida St. – bound

by Theodore Street to the north, Reed Street to the east, Interstate 80 to the south and Infantry Drive to the west; • Station No. 9, 2300 Michas Drive – bound by Bazz Drive to the north, Bronk Road to the east, Black Road to the south and County Line Road to the west.

The fire department will take precautions to reduce the effect of possible rusty water. The city will provide a chemical that removes rust from clothes in a washing machine, but affected clothes must not be dried until they have been run through a rinse cycle that includes the chemical.

The chemical will be free at any Joliet fire station. Those without transportation can call the water department at 815-724-4220 or the fire department at 815-724-3500.

Officials respond to utility board allegations

mmallory@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT TOWNSHIP – Current Lockport Township leaders are responding to claims made by a resident action group that the township board also illegally serves as the Township of Lockport Utility Board.

Concerned Citizens of Lockport Township spokesman John Barbush said in a news release this week that the utility board is made up of appointed members of the current township board and has been operating with elected officials – the township board – also functioning as the utility board in an apparent violation of state statute.

“There’s a reason the Illinois township code has these rules and regulations,” Barbush said in the release.

“It’s to prevent possible conflicts of interest and inappropriate actions. According to Illinois code, in regards to the utility board, this board of trustees is improperly functioning outside of this code, sadly.”

The state code does state that “any person holding an elective or appointive public office is not eligible for ap-

pointment to the utility board, and any person who has held an elective office or an appointive public office is not eligible for appointment for one year after the expiration of his or her term of office.”

In addition to his role with the resident group, Barbush also is vice chairman of Lockport Township Republicans.

Township Supervisor Ron Alberico noted Barbush’s involvement with the local Republican organization and said that the resident group is “doing everything they can to come up with stuff to make us look bad.”

Alberico and a slate of mostly incumbent Democrats are running against Ron Cornolo and a slate of Republicans in the township’s consolidated April election.

The resident group’s claim comes after a court case concluded in November regarding the management of the township’s water system. The case, in which the township will pay $625,000, stems from a breach of contract legal

dispute between the utility board and township and Aqua Management Co. The resident group’s news release said that the “result of the final judgment was reflected in the letter from the law firm representing Aqua Management. This letter was demanding full payment from Supervisor Ron Alberico. The judgment was in the amount of $525,000 to the Township Board under Alberico; and another

WILMINGTON – Beginning Friday, weather permitting, closures will take place near the intersection of Route 53 and Strip Mine Road in Wilmington for an intersection improvement project, according to a news release from the Illinois Department of Transportation.

The improvements are part of the Chicago to St. Louis high-speed rail program.

In order to complete the work, Strip Mine Road will be closed at the railroad tracks west of Route 53. A posted detour will direct traffic traveling west on Strip Mine Road to go south on Route 53, west on Coal City Road and north on Route 129, to meet back with Strip Mine Road. Strip Mine Road traffic traveling east is advised to take the reverse route.

Daily lane closures will continue on

Route 53 as needed. The closures will reduce the roadway to one lane with flaggers while construction activities are in progress. Route 53 traffic will be shifted to temporary pavement.

Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through the area.

Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on alert for workers and equipment.

The upgrades are part of the highspeed rail program to accommodate passenger service between Chicago and St. Louis at speeds up to 110 mph, reducing the length of the trip by one hour.

The entire corridor is tentatively scheduled to be complete by the end of the year.

About 150 crossings along the route will be improved to include additional safety features.

QUICK NEWS Joliet crews to remove trees affected by emerald ash borer

JOLIET – The city of Joliet’s Roadways Division will be performing emerald ash borer-infested tree removal between 6:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in these subdivisions: Riverwalk, Squires Mill, Fiday Road, Caton Ridge, Caton Ridge South, Caton Ridge West, Pheasant Ridge and Sable Ridge, according to a city news release.

The Roadways Division will have four seven-man crews working. Residents are asked to remove all cars from the street and take caution while driving in the tree removal areas.

The work Saturday and Sunday will include tree removal only. Crews will return at a later date to perform stump grinding.

Waste Management to resume yard waste pickup in Joliet

JOLIET – The city of Joliet and Waste Management announced in a news release that yard waste collection will resume effective Monday.

Yard waste pickup will continue every week through Dec. 8.

Residents should place yard waste material out for collection by 7 a.m. on collection day. Yard waste materials can be placed in a rigid, 33-gallon refuse-type container with a “yard waste only” sticker attached or a 32-gallon Kraft disposable-type paper bag.

Yard waste will not be collected in plastic bags or containers larger than 33 gallons.

Free yard waste stickers are available at City Hall, 150 W. Jefferson St.; Certified Warehouse Foods, 118 E. Jackson St.; and Joliet Jewel stores, 1401 W. Jefferson St., 1537 N. Larkin Ave. and 2480 Route 59.

Brush and branches may be placed in refuse-type containers or Kraft paper bags, or may be securely tied with string in bundles not exceeding 4 feet or 50 pounds.

No sticker is necessary for bundled yard waste. Unbundled brush and branches will not be collected.

Sod, dog feces, whole trees, stumps, limbs more than 3 inches in diameter and dirt will not be collected.

Barrett’s Esophagus cured with new Hybrid APC Procedure at Silver Cross Hospital SPONSORED BY

By Diane Krieger Spivak Going to a restaurant was a nightmare for Nancy Corbett. She never knew if her meal was going to stay down due to her constant indigestion and difficulty swallowing.

An upper GI exam revealed Barrett’s Esophagus, a serious complication of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) that, untreated, could develop into esophageal cancer.

“Once you’ve got Barrett’s, no antacids or acidblockers can undo the pre-cancerous change – it will not heal without treatment,” said Dr. Kamran Ayub, medical director of the Advanced Endoscopy Center at Silver Cross Hospital, in New Lenox. “The current gold standard to treat the condition is with radiofrequency ablation (RFA) therapy to remove a thin layer of the diseased tissue.”

Endoscopic ablation with RFA allows Dr. Ayub to provide a controlled amount of heat to the diseased precancerous tissue which, in turn, minimizes injury to healthy esophagus tissue. Once the tissue is

removed, normal healthy tissue grows within three to four weeks.

“In Nancy’s case, the diseased tissue couldn’t safely be removed at one time. We had to perform three ablation procedures over the past year so as to not damage healthy tissue or the surrounding muscles,” Dr. Ayub said.

Nancy’s Barrett’s esophagus kept reoccurring, so Dr. Ayub used a new technique called Hybrid APC. Dr. Ayub is one of the few experts in country performing this treatment, which destroys the Barrett’s esophagus using argon gas while preserving the underlying tissue layers.

Silver Cross is the only hospital in Illinois offering Hybrid APC for Barrett’s esophagus.

“My Barrett’s esophagus is completely gone,” said Nancy. “And so is my indigestion. I can eat again without hesitation or difficulty.”

Bodach, an attorney, said state funding is not within JJC’s control, but enrollment is, and the board’s job is looking at “long-term plans” rather than daily operations, which is what the administration is tasked with doing.

He said the college needs to attract not only high school students but adult learners.

Gaspar, who’s retired from LyondellBasell, and Juarez, a deacon at Cherry Hill Church of Christ, both shared concerns about the occupancy level of the college’s facilities.

Juarez said that if the facilities don’t have students in them, they’ll be empty, and the college needs to have an aggressive enrollment campaign. He said he also would inquire about the low percentage of black student enrollment and how that could be increased.

“Why is that low? What are we not doing right?” Juarez said.

Gaspar said he doesn’t think continuing to put up new buildings is sustainable.

“We have to be taking some reasonable action and look at everything that the boards have been approving here over the last number of years, and thinking about, ‘We can’t do that in the future,’ ” Gaspar said.

Bodach said it is his hope that filling

up empty spaces in the college’s facilities will continue to assist the college financially without having to resort to the “taxing power of the college” or “more tuition increases.”

Deiters said that when she was appointed to the board in 2015, she learned the JJC marketing department was severely underfunded. She said the college needs to focus on social media marketing to reach out to prospective students.

“Seriously, they’re all on Snapchat, they’re on Twitter, they’re on Facebook, they’re on Instagram. That’s where you’re going to reach out to these kids,” she said.

When the candidates were asked how they would work with the college administration to meet the needs of the college and the community, they generally agreed that listening to the students and the community would be a priority.

Trustee Dan O’Connell said he’s happy with the administration and JJC President Judy Mitchell, and he said lack of state funding will continue to be a “real challenge” in the coming years.

He said that if the college didn’t raise tuition in response to the state budget impasse, it would have led to program or faculty cuts.

“We don’t want to cut programs. …

We want students to finish those programs, and we want people teaching those programs and instructing those programs to be the best possible people we can get our hands on,” he said.

Vytas Banevicius, age 57, passed away Sunday, March 26, 2017 at his home after a courageous battle with cancer with loving family by his side.

Vytas leaves behind his wife, Marie of (37 years); his daughters, Samantha B. Jameson (husband Samuel) and Ashley Banevicius. Vytas has two granddaughters by Samantha, Lilly age 11 and Dalia age 8; a sister, Audra (Kevin) Durbon; and a brother, Edward (Tina) Banevicius. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

In most of our lifetime we are acquainted with very few people that are known by one name only; Vytas, he was one of those people.

His charisma to get the freight moved and make the customer happy was one that most of us will never forget. Vytas had a “can do” attitude that created a culture in the Chicago terminal that most of our customers were used to. If freight needed to be moved last minute we heard many times, call Vytas, he will find a way. His care for his employees was also something that he was known for.

He would do what he could to make sure

his employees were taken care of, even if it meant doing it himself so that employee could make it to a family event, doctor appointment or whatever the case was.

There will be a Memorial Service on Saturday April 1st 2017 (10:00 AM to 2:30 PM) at Woodlawn Funeral Home to pay respects to Vytas and a service at 2:30 for him.

In lieu of flowers, a fund has been established in Vytas’ name that is intended for his two granddaughter’s college education.

Dems weigh online privacy measures

SPRINGFIELD – Democratic lawmakers in Illinois are considering implementing their own internet safeguards at the state level after Republicans in Washington voted to roll back Obama-era internet privacy protections that were to take effect later this year.

An Illinois House committee endorsed two online privacy measures Thursday, including one that would allow people to find out what information companies such as Google and Facebook have collected on them and which third parties they share it with.

California enacted a similar measure in 2005.

Privacy advocates said such state protections are needed, particularly given what’s happening in Washington, where the Republican-controlled Congress voted to block broadband privacy regulations issued during the end of the Obama administration. President Donald Trump has indicated he will sign the measure.

S&P: Sanctuary cities won’t see ratings dip with order

CHICAGO – If sanctuary communities that refuse to cooperate with immigration authorities lose federal funds under President Donald Trump’s executive order, their credit ratings aren’t likely to change, a major rating agency concluded Thursday.

Standard & Poor’s examined the financial health of more than 100 cities and counties that have designated themselves sanctuaries, along with a snapshot of the 10 biggest U.S. cities. Its report said the types of federal grants that could be withheld make up tiny portions of the communities’ budgets.

“Local governments would likely not experience significant budgetary pressure and all other things being equal, their credit quality would likely remain largely unchanged,” according to the report.

Assessments by rating agencies are a strong fiscal measure for financial doubts municipalities may have, and S&P’s findings appeared to weaken the Trump administration’s warnings to sanctuary cities.

Dr. Richard Francis “Dick” Streitz, DDS, age 95, passed away peacefully on Tuesday March 21, 2017 at his home surrounded by his loving and caring family.

Born on November 25, 1921, in Joliet, IL to Richard and Cecelia (Ryan) Streitz, Dick was the eldest of three children.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and teenage

In 1953, Dick married his wife, Jean Kavanaugh and their family began to grow.

Surviving, along with Jean, are their children, Richard (Mary) Streitz, Nanette (Philip) Coon, Colleen (Martin) Buehler, Dr. Mark (Ann) Streitz; grandchildren, Weston Streitz, Chapin (Stephen) Konsler, Sarah (Nathan) Byram, Katherine Coon, and fiance’ Michael Bohling, Morgan (Adam) Zanotti, Martin Buehler Jr., Callie and Ryan Streitz; great-grandchildren, McKenna, Main and Reilly Byram; and Dick’s forever chairside canine companion, Piper.

Dick is also survived by his brother, Dr. Thomas (Susan) Streitz; and many nieces and

Carl Szabo, senior policy counsel at the online business trade group NetChoice, testified at the House hearing that consumer privacy already is protected under laws such as Illinois’ 2008 Biometric Information Privacy Act and existing federal law requiring privacy policies.

“This is not a zero-sum game of privacy,” Szabo said.

Supporters dismiss the argument that such protections would be burdensome, pointing out that similar requirements in the European Union and California have not stifled business.

They also point to the overwhelming support the proposal has garnered.

The committee received notices from more than 1,000 people and organizations in support of the bill – largely from private individuals.

Only 32 were submitted in opposition.

State Sen. Michael Hastings, a Tinley Park Democrat who sponsored a corresponding Senate measure awaiting a vote on that chamber’s floor, said lobbyists representing corporate giants including Apple, Amazon and Microsoft have visited his office to discuss the bill and their usage of user data.

“It may be good for the Apples, the Amazons of the world, but it’s not good for people,” Hastings said.

Ed Yohnka, a spokesman for the American Civil Liberties Union’s Illinois chapter, told The Associated Press that legislation like this is necessary to address the now “razor-thin” division between government and private entities, which can sell data to federal agencies.

“This is a new age and privacy really means a completely different thing,” Yohnka said.

The other internet privacy bill OK’d by the committee would require mobile applications that track user locations to get permission first and outline how that data will be used.

Following his service in the Navy, Dick graduated from Loyola Dental School. Following graduation, Dr. Richard attended the Forsyth Clinic in Boston. He was involved in the original growth studies and specialized in pediatric dentistry before it was a specialty.

He then began the Pediatric Department at Loyola University. He treated many children in the greater Joliet area while maintaining his private practice, Richard F. Streitz, LTD. on Jefferson Street, where he performed dentistry for over fifty years.

Dick’s community service was immense.

He volunteered at Will Grundy Medical Clinic on his day off performing many extractions.

He was also a Joliet Chamber of Commerce member. Dick was one of the founding fathers of Joliet Area Community Hospice and St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church and School where he remained a devoted member.

Time away from the office was spent with

his family enjoying different parts of the country – Innisbrook, FL, the Northwoods of Wisconsin, and skiing in the mountains “Out West.” Friends and family always looked forward to vacation time spent with Dick and Jean.

Dick will long be remembered for his professional integrity; his humor; his athleticism on the tennis court, ski hill, and golf course; his gift of friendship with so many; his devotion to family; and for his role as “Papa.”

The family would like to extend deep appreciation for Lina’ s devoted and compassionate care and for the support and dignity provided

White House invites lawmakers to see intel The ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON – The White House refused to say Thursday whether it secretly fed intelligence reports to a top Republican investigating possible coordination between Russia and the 2016 Trump campaign. Fending off growing criticism, the administration invited lawmakers from both parties to view classified material it said relates to surveillance of the president’s associates.

The White House’s invitation letter came amid a quickly rising storm over Rep. Devin Nunes, who heads the House Intelligence Committee. The New York Times reported that two White House officials – including an aide whose job was recently saved

by President Donald Trump – secretly helped Nunes examine intelligence information last week.

The House panel’s work has been deeply, and perhaps irreparably, undermined by Nunes’ apparent coordination with the White House. He told reporters last week that he had seen troubling information about the improper distribution of Trump associates’ intercepted communications, and he briefed the president on the material, all before informing Rep. Adam Schiff, the committee’s top Democrat.

Speaking on Capitol Hill Thursday, Schiff said he was “more than willing” to accept the White House offer to view new information.

But he raised concerns that Trump officials may have used Nunes to “launder information to our committee to avoid the true source.”

“The White House has a lot of questions to answer,” he said.

Instead, the White House continued to sidestep queries about its role in showing Nunes classified information that appears to have included transcripts of foreign of-

Days later, Nunes announced that he had evidence, via an unnamed source, showing that Trump and his aides’ communications had been collected through legal means but then “widely disseminated” throughout government agencies. He said the collections were not related to the Russia investigation.

Trump spokesman Sean Spicer said Thursday the material the White House wants the House and Senate intelligence leaders to view was discovered by the National Security Council through the course of regular business.

He would not say whether it was the same material Nunes had already seen.

A congressional aide said Schiff did not receive the White House letter until after Spicer announced it from the White House briefing room.

Spicer had previously dismissed the notion that the White House had funneled information to Nunes, saying the idea that the congressman would come and brief Trump on material the president’s team already had “doesn’t pass the smell test.”

Prison cameras could save cash

A recent story about Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner proposing cameras to replace guards in the towers at our lesser-security state prisons was captivating.

The technology could potentially do a better job, reduce the number of guards and shift more to where they can better control the inmates and save $4 million a year. The story went on to say that Pennsylvania did it and saved $5 million, and Michigan did it and saved $15 million. Makes you wonder why we couldn’t save even more.

It was an unexpected surprise to find we do prisons better, or at least cheaper, to begin with.

All three states house a similar number of inmates. Illinois does it for $1.1 billion less than Pennsylvania and $563 million less than Michigan.

By inmate, ours each cost taxpayers $31,856 a year while Michigan spends $46,376 per inmate and Pennsylvania

$50,000. Illinois and Pennsylvania each run 25 institutions, but we do it with 3,400 fewer employees.

Still, we are a heck of a lot broker than our peers. Cutting costs through technology has been a Rauner theme, and a recent point of contention as our Michael Madigan-acolyte of a state comptroller, Susana Mendoza, blocked spending on technology that improves efficiencies and secures state financial systems and personnel records against hackers. Politics again take Illinoisans hostage. If technology can be constantly vigilant with thermal cameras and software that can set off alarms if it recognizes an inmate fight, an escape attempt or someone trying to toss a bag of drugs into the fence, then cheaper and better is the way to go. Corrections officers can be better used than just staring out at a yard for months on end awaiting a few minutes of trouble.

To the Editor: It is time for new leadership at the helm of Lincoln-Way Community High School District 210.

The litany of incompetence and irresponsibility by the board of education and administration, as evidenced by the misappropriation of bond proceeds, federal investigations, lawsuits, deterioration of the district’s financial rating by the state of Illinois, frivolous spending on projects completely unrelated to student learning and tenants using district facilities rent free, to name a few, that have come to light since the board voted to close Lincoln-Way North High School in 2015 is appalling.

The common cause is crystal clear: a colossal and complete failure of the board of education to effectively, efficiently and ethically govern the district. The board has been sleeping at the switch for too long, allowing former Superintendent Larry Wylie to run the board rather than the other way around, and failing to uphold its

fundamental fiduciary duty to protect the interests of the district’s taxpayers.

For the district to account and atone for its past misdeeds, to regain the public’s trust, and to genuinely establish effective and ethical governance, a thorough housecleaning at the board level is necessary.

Two incumbents currently running for re-election were either elected or appointed before 2015: Dee Molinare and Chris Kosel. These incumbents are trying to distance themselves from any association with former Superintendent Larry Wylie and are touting how they are urgently working to establish new levels of accountability and transparency (an urgency that only seems to surface during election season).

Such efforts come too little and too late, and the failure of governance displayed by this remnant of the “old guard” does not warrant re-election for another term.

Is Joliet ready?

To the Editor: Yes, Trump fooled the American people, but we are not involved in our own political process. We spend millions to allow candidates to advertise messages, but don’t follow through.

Their messages are too broad. I would like to see each community allow every candidate to post their own agenda on their city website, free, so voters know who they are.

Then voters will be smarter and will get involved in local elections, and that extends to all candidates up to presidential.

Then the debates would be about different ideas and solutions to existing problems. Now, everyone is on the same page, and yes, we all belong to the same union of states. We all have a problem with health care, pensions and pay inequality.

Let’s all fight for what’s good for all of us. If a local union endorses a can-

didate, share that in the local newspaper so we can all know why.

The council might even do it now, and maybe there are other ideas we need to debate, and reporters can report them. The newspaper will have more readers and local ads, and businesses will have more customers.

Why have double standards in America? Social Security and Medicare are not available to everyone. Why not, if we all belong?

Why should veterans have a separate health care system when they could get the same treatment locally?

The Illinois States’ Attorney’s Office told me we can use our website for this purpose. The city was afraid of a lawsuit for interfering with elections.

Well, I support Rachel, and thank you for allowing me to say this. Let’s all be winners.

I think we can start our own revolution in Joliet, get money out of politics here, and maybe America. Yes, we can. We can have 100 percent turnout if we work for everyone.

cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The boys volleyball teams from Lockport and Joliet West have been among the best in the area during the past few years.

But while the Porters have an experienced squad whose fast start has provided plenty of optimism for another successful season, the Tigers possess a younger group that has shown signs

of promise, but still needs a bit more seasoning.

Those traits were demonstrated Thursday when the former conference opponents met in their first nonconference match in the sport. Lockport grabbed an early lead in the opener, and then overcame a good start by West in the finale to capture a 25-13, 25-15 victory.

“To see these seniors grow from their freshman year has been great,

and you can see the tight-knit group that we have,” Porters coach Nick Mraz said. “Two years ago we had a really good year, and most of it was because they were such good friends on the floor, and you see that again. We just have a great culture in our program right now.

“It’s our core senior leadership that’s giving us this strong start. If you have talent and close relationships, a lot of times that puts a team to

the next level, and that’s what we have this year, we have great potential to be special. We have a strong triple block and a lot of tough servers, we’ve got good setters, a good pin presence and strong middles. And we’re balanced with our kills, which is nice, since we don’t have to rely on one person.”

WJOL tournament opening-round games postponed STAFF, SUBMITTED REPORTS

The rain finally won out.

Despite the best efforts of the parties involved, all four opening-round games that had been scheduled Thursday in the WJOL/Don Ladas Memorial Baseball Tournament were postponed because of wet field conditions.

The revised schedule will feature three opening-round games Friday at Ed Flink Field, at Lockport, and one Friday, at Providence.

The 4 p.m. game at Providence will match the Celtics against Minooka.

The tripleheader at Lockport will begin at 3 p.m., with Joliet Central battling Lincoln-Way West at 3 p.m. At 5 p.m., Lockport faces Joliet West, and at 7 p.m. Plainfield Central meets Joliet Catholic Academy under the lights.

The games at Lockport will have a twohour time limit, with no inning starting after two hours.

“We kept a lot of the core from our team last year, and we’ve added some new guys for this year, and we’re all really excited about this season,” Provenzano said. “We have a good players on the team, and we’re all close to each other, so we bond and on the court we’ll jell since we know each others’ tendencies and how to work with each other, and that’s a key. We’re really close and have a good level of volleyball so we play together as a team.”

The Tigers had a much better showing to open the final set as they took an early 7-5 lead behind three kills from Zach Boeringa and two kills from Carson Brendemuehl after assists from Kalvin Fellows. But the Porters used a kill by Surane to start a 6-0 spurt, which also featured two kills and a block by Pfeiffer.

“We have many of the same guys that we had on our sophomore team, when we did really good, so I think we’ll also do really good this year,” Speechley said. “We have a good team bond that really helps us connect and play good.

Our team has a lot of energy, and if we can keep the energy up, I think that we can do really good this year.”

With only play in their own tournament and this match under their belts so far, the Tigers are looking to develop over the next few weeks. If things unfold as he hopes, West coach Jason Herrmann feels that his squad can fare well in their Southwest Prairie Conference debut.

“Obviously we didn’t come out as strong as we wanted to,” Herrmann said.

“I think that we have a lot of individual talent, but it’s going to take some time for us to jell together and get things rolling. Kalvin’s really running the show for the first time, but he’s a smart kid that sees a lot, and he played really good defense, which is something a lot of setters don’t always do. And Zach’s going to be our go-to guy, so he has to get used to all of that pressure.

“This weekend (at West Aurora) will be a good chance to work on this lineup.

These guys listen and have taken a lot of what we’ve said in practice, and it’s starting to transfer over into the game play. And they’re going to learn our mentality of ‘Next ball, next play, one for one.’ That’s a lot of the resilience that teams in the past had that this team is working toward.”

ROMEOVILLE – Little things separate teams from one another in the postseason.

Two games and two weeks stand between the Lewis men’s volleyball team and the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association conference tournament. The Flyers need to play to their potential if they want to win it all to advance to the NCAA tournament.

Although the Flyers know this is happening in the next few days, they are solely focused on the last two games of the season. They have good reason, too. If they can earn two final MIVA victories, they will enter the tournament seeded second and put themselves in a better position to succeed.

One thing is on Lewis’ side this year.

The Flyers’ bench is known for being silly, but what not many might realize is the bench is one of Lewis’ biggest strengths this season.

“Before last year, we were pretty set with our lineup,” Flyers coach Dan Friend said. “Geoff Powell, Greg Petty, [Eric Fitterer], they weren’t coming off the floor. We were pretty set with the guys that were playing.

“What you saw last year was us trying to figure out the combination of who’s playing. We started switching lineups and doing different things; that’s a culmination of last year into this year. We created depth.

“Guys are competing, and now all of a sudden the coaching staff, as well as the players, are not afraid. They’re ready to step up and create an opportunity for themselves and excel.”

Last year, the Flyers went 1-8 in five-game matches. They have improved to 8-2 this year in five-game matches.

Jacob Schmiegelt, a four-year starter who was on the 2015 national runner-up team, said they have gone to five-game matches and fought to victory because of the bench. When the starters struggle, the bench comes in and turns around the match.

Outside hitter’s Trevor Weirskircher and Kyle Bugee have split time pretty evenly, but both come off the bench and produce for the Flyers.

Oftentimes, they are the game-changers. Other huge contributions come from Jake Walenga, Tom Beckmann, Dan Mauer and Ryan Van Loo. Whether it’s serving, defense, big swings or putting the ball in play to force the other team to make errors,

One thing that sets the Lewis men’s volleyball team apart from many others is the outstanding contribution the Flyers consistently receive from their bench brigade (above).

“We have a good mindset when we go in,” Van Loo said. “We do as much as we can. We get the serves. We get the digs. We’re focused, and we try and bring energy. We only have a couple of points when we get in, so we try to do the most we can when we get that chance.”

It is hard to stay engaged throughout an entire match.

The Flyers proved in 2015 they know how to keep their team mentally checked in. Having a player jump into another’s hands for the “Frequent Flyer” might have seemed crazy, but let’s look at that for a second.

That’s physical.

One player jumped. Easy enough.

The other players lifted him off the ground.

Now the Flyers have become more physical. They have a different cheer for each player to keep themselves mentally engaged, and a majority of the cheers are physical. They are doing pushups, squats and swan dives across the floor.

“If you watch our bench, we aren’t like most benches,” Walenga said.

This year is proving the silliness gives results.

Along with having coordinated cheers for every player on the team, the bench stays mentally engaged by conversing with their teammates during timeouts.

Usually with timeouts, coaches

speak to the players.

Watch the Lewis bench. Right away the coaches group together for a good 15 seconds, while the bench players go to their respective players and tell them what they see. Then the coaches join the huddle. Lewis’ bench is engaged the entire time, which is why players can come off the bench and excel.

Another key is how the Flyers train.

The entire unit trains hard so everyone can put themselves in position where they can sub in a player without regret.

Not many teams can say the same.

If Lewis has one thing in its favor going into the postseason, it’s that every player can bring something to the table.

“When we’re on the bench coming in, we’re expected to do anything that our starters can do,” Beckmann said.

“We pride ourselves on our ability to do that because I don’t think a lot of programs can say that they have a lot of depth, and we do. When we have the chance to go in, we try to take advantage of it and have fun while we play.”

Not the same old song and dance Meet three people with lofty purpose behind their artistic vision

The quote is attributed to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, but it might as well apply to three local residents who use art to help other people.

‘Listening Heart Room’

On Jan. 25, Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet dedicated its “Listening Heart Room” in the newly renovated emergency department.

Jan. 25 also was the birthday of Tom Vana of New Lenox.

Vana, along with his wife, Michele Vana, and Karl and Marilyn Kurtz of New Lenox, donated $100,000 toward the room in memory of Tom and Michele’s son, Jay Vana, who died in a car crash in 2012 when he was 16.

Michele said she and Tom had spent time in the family room off the emergency department after the crash. A family room, Michele said, is a room near the emergency department for families to think or pray after a loved one is critically injured or has died.

“Often times family rooms tend to be an afterthought, a room that’s tucked away and not fully decorated.

They’re generally not very comforting places,” Michele said. “We wanted to change that for other people.”

So the Vanas brainstormed with the hospital’s founding Sisters of the Sacred Heart to transform the area into the “Listening Heart Room,” Michele said.

“We wanted it to be a comfortable room, a room that also offered hope,” Michele said. “Families are dealing with very serious matters when they’re in that room.”

Michele said the sisters suggested “Lebh Shomea,” which means “listening heart.” Michele added a tagline: “I offer you my listening heart.” The “I” could be a doctor, nurse, friend or even God, if the person is praying, Michele said.

The “Listening Heart Room” also has large windows for natural light, a private bathroom and a large mural that the Vanas asked Brian Turnbough of Mokena to custom-paint for them.

The mural features Jay’s favorite color tones: lime green and purple.

‘Where I Have Been and Where I Am Now – A Collection of Thoughts’

Joliet Central High School alumna Elizabeth Anne Briick, now 35, said she began writing in second grade, partly as an outlet to deal with the chaos in her life, This chaos included an injury to Briick’s right arm when she was 7 (her arm followed the towels through a wringer washer) that required years of rehabilitation, abuse on several levels and a decades-long battle with anxiety and depression.

“I was the kid in class that if I had to write one paragraph, I would write

five,” Briick, of Joliet, said.

But Briick has not stayed down.

A news release from Joliet Township High School District 204 said Briick graduated in 2005 from Robert Morris University in Orland Park with an associate degree in paralegal sciences.

Briick now works at Chicago Bridge and Iron in Plainfield while working on her bachelor’s degree in psychology at Lewis University in Romeoville.

Briick invites others to share her journey of tragedy and triumph through two collections of 70 poems.

She published the first, “Silent Conversations,” in 2007. Briick recently released her second, “Where I Have Been and Where I Am Now – A Collection of Thoughts.” Each selection focuses, in a personal way, on a particular point in time.

“I think of each of my poems almost as a short story, a very brief glimpse in how I might be feeling in the moment,” Briick said. “I put those thoughts, whatever they might be, down on paper so they’re not running around in my head.”

Briick hopes her words let readers know their hopeless situations aren’t, in fact, hopeless, that another has walked through fire and prevailed, and that she, through her words, is walking with them through their darkness.

She experienced that connection last year when she spoke about her poetry at Washington Junior High School in Joliet.

“Many of these 12- and 13-year-old kids came up to me afterwards and shared their stories of what they’re dealing with: parents being in prison, people close to them having passed away or being shot,” Briick said.

Then Brooke “took it to the next level” and directed her first musical, “The Wizard of Oz.” When she told her parents, Lisa and Dave Ferricks, that she was forming “Brooke’s Backyard Productions,” they were understandably skeptical.

“When I was her age, I liked boys and makeup,” Lisa said. “But before we knew it, it was showtime and 50

people showed up at our house.”

Brooke planned a simple backyard performance. But it rained on show day and the Ferricks scrambled to move aside furniture to accommodate 12 young performers and their families.

A free will offering was taken to help a friend of Brooke’s who had cancer.

“We raised $400,” Brooke said.

After that, Brooke produced, “The Little Mermaid,” and raised $1,200.

Half went to a neighborhood girl

with spina bifida; the other half went to Down in the Southland, an organization that helps individuals with Down syndrome living in Chicago’s south suburbs.

Last June, Brooke’s Backyard Productions hosted a talent show at her church, St. Bernard Catholic Church in Homer Glen, and raised $800. This June, Brooke is repeating “The Wizard of Oz” with an expanded cast of 30 performers ages 6 to 14. She is anticipating 500 people at its performance.

Admission is still a free will donation and will benefit the Kolpacki family in Homer Glen. The family was injured last December when their house exploded because of a gas leak.

Brooke holds rehearsals at her house and the performance at St. Bernard. She’s thrilled to share her passion for musical theater in ways that help others.

“She’s truly a gift and a blessing,” Lisa said. “Her desire to help others will hopefully be contagious.”

Blood pressure must be controlled Dear Doctor: I know that high blood pressure increases the risk of heart disease, stroke and more. However, is it still considered a risk factor if it’s controlled with medicine?

Dear Reader: High blood pressure is a significant risk factor for heart attacks and strokes because it damages the arteries that supply the heart and the brain, causing them to narrow.

Additionally, the heart has to work harder to deal with the resulting elevated blood pressure, increasing the risk of eventual heart failure. There is no disputing these facts.

As for whether someone with high blood pressure controlled by medication has a risk equivalent to somebody without high blood pressure, that’s a good question – and no studies have specifically tried to answer it. But researchers have studied patients with high blood pressure and the attempts to bring the blood pressure to different levels.

A 2015 breakthrough study in the New England Journal of Medicine took 9,361 patients with systolic blood pressure greater than 130 and randomly assigned them to either treatment to keep the blood pressure between 130 and 140 or more aggressive treatment to bring the blood pressure down to 120. The aggressively treated group got their blood pressure down to 121 on average, while the less aggressively treated group had an average systolic blood pressure of 136.

The study was stopped after three years because of a 27 percent decrease in the overall death rate in the aggressively treated group.

A 2016 study in The Lancet combined data from 123 studies of hypertension treatment with a total of 613,815 patients.

This analysis showed that for every 10-point decrease in blood pressure, the death rate decreased by 13 percent, the stroke rate decreased by 27 percent and the heart failure rate decreased by 28 percent. Like the former study, the benefits were greater with blood pressure below 130.

ASK THE DOCTORS Robert Ashley Lastly, an analysis of 16 studies published in 2016 in the Journal of Hypertension looked at the benefits of more aggressive treatment versus less aggressive treatment of blood pressure. The authors found a 16 percent decrease in death rate with blood pressure below 130 versus blood pressure greater than 130.

Although these studies don’t directly answer your question, consider the incremental benefits of lowering your blood pressure. If, on medication, your systolic blood pressure is in the 130s, I would say you’re at greater risk than someone who is not taking medication and who has a blood pressure of 120. If you’re on medication and your blood pressure is 120, it’s hard to say how that compares to somebody who has a blood pressure of 120 and is not on medication.

The most important lesson is if you have high blood pressure, you should treat it.

Also, a message for my readers: A recent column on whether to give aspirin for a heart attack in progress referred to two studies in which users received aspirin at various times. In referring to one study, the article stated earlier users received aspirin an average of 1.6 hours before the onset of symptoms. Obviously, this should have said “after the onset of symptoms.”

In referring to the other study, the article stated patients received aspirin at least 24 hours after the beginning of symptoms.

This should have said “up to 24 hours after the beginning of symptoms.”

There is a boy I like at school.

He is a very well-known person around school. I’m not. I do have a wide variety of friends, and I even talk to some of his.

My friends know I like him, and they would like for me to talk to him. I wouldn’t mind that, but what would I say? They want it to happen in person, but I want to do it by text, where I feel more me. Please let people know that once someone without gloves touches this food, the demonstrator must discard it for health reasons.
