Shorewood man given $2 million bond after hammer attack, arson

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A $2 million bond has been set for a Shorewood man who allegedly struck a woman with a hammer and set her home on fire Saturday.

Timothy S. Gregory, 36, of the 900 block of South Raven Road, also faces new charges issued Monday, after he was arrested by Joliet police and charged Saturday with aggravated battery and aggravat-

As a condition of his bond, Gregory is not to have contact with two people or their home in the 1000 block of North Infantry Drive in Joliet. Police have said the woman Gregory attacked at the home is his brother’s significant other.

Joliet Deputy Chief Al Roechner said the woman is still at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet. She was in a drug-induced coma and her condition has not changed, he said.

After residents complain, New Lenox to modify zoning ordinance for gun shops

Shaw Media correspondent NEW LENOX – An ordinance that was to have passed without further discussion Monday night regarding zoning for gun shops and ranges will now be delayed as it is amended to reflect the concerns of some New Lenox residents. Village officials have previously discussed the ordinance, which would allow gun shops and indoor gun ranges to be built in some commercially and industrially zoned portions of town, at a work session in January, at a planning and zoning commission meeting in February at which a public hearing was held, and at the village board’s last meeting March 13.

A provision requiring prospective gun shops and ranges to be 500 feet away from residential areas, schools, day care facilities, churches and parks was considered at the January meeting but removed later due to advice from legal counsel about possible constitutionality issues based on a court case Chicago lost recently because of strictly limiting available land.

However, after the ordinance was reported after the March 13 meeting, Mayor Tim Baldermann received 15 to 20 emails from concerned residents, he said Monday night, when the board met again.

agenda and amended, with inclusion of the separation requirement, and then brought back to the board for further discussion and a final vote.

With further research, Village Administrator Kurt Carroll and Assistant Village Administrator Robin Ellis were able to ascertain that the restriction would still make available about 59 percent of the zoned areas in question, Baldermann said.

“We all know where Chicago stands on guns,” he said. “And my impression is that they were being overly restrictive, making it nearly impossible for somebody to open a gun shop or range in the city and therefore they really didn’t have a basis for their restriction.”

Baldermann added that he is “supportive of that type of business … and that Second Amendment right. However, where government is responsible in my opinion is where there is some common-sense balance.”

Village Trustee David Butterfield made the point that the village could still be sued, to which Baldermann replied, “Yes, we can get sued for anything, but I think we can make the argument that we’re not trying to shut these businesses out.”

New Lenox resident Jennifer Kmitch, who said she represented a group of residents that “is supportive of gun laws that are sensible for a community,” spoke after the mayor’s comments.

“Gun violence affects everyone and every community,” Kmitch said. “But to the extent that the village can take certain steps to help prohibit people from getting guns in their hands that should not ... that is something we are supportive of and we wanted to make sure that you do that.”

Baldermann explained that, “zoning is something we can deal with and we think this is a common-sense approach,” but that only federal and state governments can determine actual gun control laws.

Megan Hillegass and Andrea Garritano, who were among several residents who attended the meeting, both said afterward that they contacted the village because they felt the board would move forward with the approval of the ordinance without the separation requirement, since they had not heard from residents. Both also said that they were in favor of stricter gun control laws.

“We understand that we don’t have a choice by law [about people being able to buy guns], so we want to make sure that we are doing this in the most responsible and safe way possible,” Hillegass said.

Garritano said that she felt that Baldermann “addressed our concerns completely and clearly.”

The amended ordinance will likely come to the board as a discussion item at the April 10 meeting and for a formal vote at the April 24 meeting.

Joliet’s water availability has been a concern since at least 1971

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – In 15 or 20 years the Joliet wells could start to go dry, or so it’s predicted.

This is not the first time groundwater experts have predicted a potential groundwater shortage for the city. But it’s hard for a public official to ignore forecasts that the city’s source of water could dry up.

“If the scientists are right, and we’re looking at 20 years of water left, it’s not a lot of time to do what we need to do here,” Mayor Bob O’Dekirk said.

O’Dekirk earlier this month appointed seven people to a commission to study the city’s options, which could include drawing water from the Kankakee River or switching to Lake Michigan water.

In a way, it’s back to the future.

Joliet for decades has been weighing its options as the future of available of water underground has clashed with predicted shortages tied to growth spurts above ground.

“The last time we looked at going to Kankakee River was in 2003,” utilities director James Eggen said.

The city then, too, was looking at forecasts from the Illinois State Water Survey, a leading research institute on water issues that provided a fairly flexible forecast for groundwater availability.

“At that time, the best answer we could get from the Illinois State Water Survey was 20 to 100 years,” Eggen said. “They’ve continued to do more study on the situation. They keep moving the projection up.”

The city had by 2007 built 11 groundwater treatment plants expected to serve Joliet for 20 years.

The early 2000s was not the first time Joliet explored alternate sources of water because of forecasts that groundwater would dry up.

In 1971, Joliet and five other towns – Frankfort, Lockport, New Lenox, Rockdale and Romeoville – formed a Public Water Commission to look for water options.

“There was aquifer depletion at that time,” Eggen said. “That was primarily driven by DuPage County. They were on groundwater at the time.”

When DuPage County switched to Lake Michigan water, the aquifer recharged.

But future building booms spread farther away from Chicago. Joliet and many Will County towns were among the fastest growing in the country in

the pre-recession growth years of the 2000s.

The Public Water Commission, which was dormant for years, was revived in 2015.

Now, water experts say the Cambrian-Ordovician Aquifer that serves Joliet could be sustained if the city stopped using it – at least as a primary source of water.

“We’ve been using water from this source since 1863,” said George Roadcap, a hydrologist with the Illinois

2 drivers taken to hospital after crash

Center in Joliet after a car crash in which one of the cars ended up on its top.

The incident in the 900 block of 129th Infantry Drive involved two

cars that crashed into each other about 3 p.m. Tuesday, Joliet Fire Department Battalion Chief Robert DiLorenzo said. He said he did not know how the crash happened.

DiLorenzo said the drivers were transported to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

The Joliet fire and police departments responded to the incident.

Joliet Central student center named finalist for Chicago award

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Joliet Central High School student center is a finalist for an award that recognizes innovative Chicago-area buildings, according to a district news release.

The new addition to the historic Joliet Central High School building is one of four finalists in the New Construction Suburbs category for the 2017 Chicago Building Congress Merit Awards.

Joliet Township High School District 204 is proud of the student center, said Karla Guseman, assistant superintendent of educational services.

“We are excited the Chicago Building Congress has recognized this outstanding addition to our historic Joliet Central campus as well,” Guseman said.

In the CBC Merit Awards, a panel of 40 CBC members will judge 33 projects in nine categories over the course of multiple sessions. The awards gala will take place May 23 in Chicago.

co-present with Gilbane Building Co., which built the center, for a CBC judges panel April 6, according to the news release.

The 43,164-square-foot student cen-

ter opened January 2016 and was built to accommodate up to 600 students in its cafeteria. The center also contains a student-run office for Abri Credit Union, a bookstore, a technology desk and presentation rooms.

Gilbane Building Co. built the student center and Wight and Co. designed it.

Kevin Havens, Wight and Co. executive vice president and director of design, stated in an email that the company is thrilled the student center has been selected for consideration by CBC. “The new student center is viewed as a beacon for the entire community – it’s a gateway to its past, present and future. It was an honor for us to work with the staff, teachers and surrounding community of this landmark school, as well as our construction partner, Gilbane, on this project,” Havens stated.

The student center was built to feature some of the same Collegiate Gothic architecture as the Central school building, which is more than 100 years old and placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

JJC trustee candidates forum to be held Thursday If you go

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A forum for Joliet Junior College Board of Trustees candidates will be held Thursday at the college.

The JJC student government will host an open forum for the candidates at 3 p.m. Thursday in the U-Building Auditorium at the college’s main campus, 1215 Houbolt Road.

JJC spokeswoman Kelly Rohder stated in an email that eight of the nine candidates running for four seats on the board are expected to attend, with the exception of John “Jake” Mahalik.

Seeking two-year terms on the board are Mahalik, Margaret Hornung and

Austin Stacy, JJC student govern-

ment president, said his organization has held forums for trustee candidates in the past.

“It gives a chance for the community to know more information about these trustees,” Stacy said of the forum.

He said he will moderate the forum along with Kathleen Duong, student trustee. They will produce questions for the candidates, and members of the audience can bring their own questions as well, he said.

According to JJC, trustees elected to the board fill six-year terms in the spring election cycle. But the board has had three resignations in 2015 and members appointed to those seats – Morales, Deiters and Dan O’Connell – must run

in the April election to stay on the board.

The candidates who win two-year terms on the board will fill the terms of former board Chairwoman Tina Markley and Trustee Barb Adams, both of whom resigned in 2015 after Markley complained about attempts to remove her from the chairwomanship and internal board politics.

The terms of both Markley and Adams were up in 2019.

The candidates who win for six-year terms on the board will fill the next terms for seats that were occupied by former board Chairman Jeff May – who resigned in 2015 for health reasons – and Mike O’Connell. Both of their terms were set to expire this year.

Joliet Park District plans West Park improvements

Plans include new trails, bridges and playground equipment in the park at Wheeler and Belleview avenues.

One feature that will be left alone is the sled hill, Larry Burich, director of planning and parks, told the park board this week.

Burich said park staff met with West Park neighbors several times and got a clear message to keep the sled hill intact.

The Frisbee golf course remains, although Burich said a new trail winding through the park will require a redesign on a couple of the 27 holes on the course. There also will be a second loop trail.

A splash pad also will be added to the park. Park facilities, including a pavilion, will be renovated.

The park district plans to seek bids on the work in April, Burich said.

West Park is among the projects being done by the park district with the $19.5 million in bond money approved by voters in a 2014 referendum.

Board majority against trustee’s request Ed O’Rourke displeased with Plainfield’s procedure

mmallory@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – One Plainfield trustee has taken issue with the village’s procedure for determining how trustees get topics placed on agendas.

His concern is that there doesn’t seem to be an official process.

The Plainfield Village Board held a workshop meeting Monday night to discuss the matter, which has been brought up by Trustee Ed O’Rourke several times in recent months.

This came after tensions rose during a March 13 meeting, in which O’Rourke alleged that Village Administrator Brian Murphy wasn’t properly notifying trustees about changes related to the redesign of the parking lot at Plainfield Plaza and the recently approved Jimmy John’s location. O’Rourke also said Murphy hadn’t supplied answers to concerns he raised last fall regarding zoning code, adding that he had asked Murphy about that topic three times.

O’Rourke appeared surprised in the March 13 meeting that Trustee Bill

Lamb knew about possible changes to the entry and exit at the plaza. Other trustees agreed that O’Rourke’s evaluation of staff in a public forum that day was the wrong thing to do and asked that it happen in executive session.

“The evaluation of any personnel should be done in executive session, not in an open forum where you’re going to hang dirty laundry out, or what one perceives as dirty laundry,” Mayor Mike Collins said in the March 13 meeting, adding that Lamb knew about the issue because he was able to go to the plan commission meeting where the item was discussed in detail. “So if something is done and it’s brought up by a trustee, you insinuate that that trustee had inside information or something he wasn’t authorized to [know].”

O’Rourke said Monday during the meeting, which the village posted video of on its website, that he wants to know what the process is for getting something on the agenda.

Trustee Garrett Peck said in the video that when he’s interested in some-

thing, he brings it up in trustee comments and if there’s consensus among the board, it might be six months sometimes, but, “essentially the mayor legislatively sets the agenda and staff also responds to the majority of the board.

So that’s the procedure I’ve seen in place.”

“I’ve personally not had a problem,” Peck said, adding he’s comfortable communicating with staff and the mayor, and doesn’t want to formalize a procedure.

Lamb said in the video that when he was first appointed trustee in 2005, the village administrator at the time said the staff works for the board as a whole, not one specific trustee.

Lamb noted sometimes requests just don’t have the support of the majority of the board, which has occurred regarding a few of O’Rourke’s requests.

Lamb said the system works well now and village staff is performing well, and trustees need to be careful not to micromanage.

Mayor of Plainfield the agenda is vague. He referenced the policies of other municipalities, such as the city of Naperville, where future agenda items can be placed on an agenda by gaining a certain amount of support from the city council.

Collins and each trustee, except O’Rourke, said they didn’t want to lay out specific terms for getting something on the agenda. Trustee Brian Wojowski noted how some municipalities have boards that are fighting back and forth right now for control of the majority in public meetings and Plainfield should maintain its practice of working together.

U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Plano, has announced in a news release that he is accepting applications for summer internships in his Washington, D.C., Campton Hills and forthcoming McHenry offices.

Internships are unpaid and will run from roughly May through August.

Academic credit may be available and schedules can be flexible for those with classes or other obligations. Applicants from the 14th Congressional District are preferred. Applications are due by March 31.

Applicants should be college students or recent graduates, and will assist staff with constituent relations, policy and outreach efforts. Many duties will be administrative, but interns may also be asked to staff Hultgren at meetings in the district or assist legislative staff in Washington.

Rep. Hultgren accepting summer intern applications

PLAINFIELD – On Saturday, the Plainfield North High School track and field team will hold the Fast Cat 5K/10K in and around the school, according to a news release from the Plainfield Police Department, which stated that as a result of the event, people may experience increased traffic or temporary road closures.

The 5K/10K is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. at North. It will use roads and paths off campus.

Due to the event, the following roads will temporarily be closed beginning at 8 a.m. until the bulk of the participants have cleared the area: • 248th Avenue from Winterberry Lane to Champion Drive; • 119th Street from Millennium Parkway to Heritage Meadows Drive; • Van Dyke Road from Whispering Trails Drive to 119th Street; • Millennium Parkway from 248th Avenue to Champion Drive; • Champion Drive from Millennium Parkway to Champion Court.

All roadways will be reopened at the conclusion of the race – about 10:30 a.m. Parking will be restricted on parts of Millennium Parkway and Champion Drive as a result of the event.

Troy, Wilmington fire districts seek referendums

bstanley@shawmedia.com Area fire districts are asking voters next week to pass referendums with the goal of ensuring that emergency services won’t be affected by budget requirements.

The Troy Fire Protection District, which serves Shorewood and the surrounding area, wants to secure the pension funding that is required by state law. Like the Safe Roads Act that passed in Illinois last year, money collected as part of the district’s referendum would be used only for funding the pension.

“Currently the money to fund the pension comes from the fire district’s operating budget,” Troy Fire

Chief Andy Doyle said. “As the costs for operating the fire district rise, the money to keep modern and up-to-date equipment may suffer in the future.”

The pension is required to be funded to 90 percent.

The referendum would raise taxes by 0.2 percent of a property’s equalized assessed value. A committee formed in support of the referendum estimates this would raise taxes on a $100,000 home by $66.67 per year.

Troy responded to 2,827 calls in 2016. The only other district in the southwestern quarter of the county with more than 2,000 calls was the Wilmington Fire Protection District, which is also seeking a referendum. The district provides services for the city of Wilmington and Florence, Wesley and Wilmington townships.

The district has proposed increasing the fire department tax rate from 0.7709 percent to 1.1 percent for four years. The referendum’s supporters estimate this would raise taxes on a $100,000 house by $90 annually.

QUICK NEWS PLAINFIELD – The Plainfield Police Department joined forces with other state and local law enforcement and highway safety partners in a recent St. Patrick’s Day crackdown, according to a department news release. Plainfield police issued the following citations during the effort: 26 for failure to wear a seat belt, nine for driving without insurance, nine for illegal cellphone use, six for speeding, five for child restraint violations and 13 for other violations.

The enforcement effort was paid for by federal traffic safety funds through the Illinois Department of Transportation and is part of the statewide “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” and “Click It or Ticket” campaigns.

Will County Sheriff Mike Kelley has received this year’s Sheriff of the Year award from the Illinois State Crime Commission, according to a news release from Kelley’s office.

Kelley was notified last week of the award and will be recognized at the commission’s annual “Salute to Those Who Make a Difference” award dinner in June at Drury

Lane in Oak Brook Terrace.

The Illinois State Crime Commission is the largest organization in the state committed to combating public corruption and strengthening the Illinois criminal justice system.

“The water shot up 80 feet in the air,” Roadcap said. “It used to be under a lot of pressure, but that pressure has been bled off over time.”

Chicago eventually got off the aquifer and used Lake Michigan water. Aurora and Elgin in recent years switched to the Fox River as their primary water source, although they continue to maintain deep water wells as a secondary source.

Roadcap envisions Joliet eventually doing the same, using the aquifer as a secondary source of water, if the city switches to the Kankakee River or Lake Michigan as the primary source.

“The aquifer will continue to serve a very valuable purpose in the future as a backup source,” he said.

While the Cambrian-Ordovician Aquifer runs under much of northeastern Illinois, not every town with wells uses it.

Some of the same towns in the Public Water Commission use a shallow aquifer, which is not accessible in Joliet. They say their water is holding up fine.

“We’ve not seen any problems, so we believe we’re good,” Frankfort Village Administrator Jerald Ducay said.

The aquifer actually has improved with neighboring municipalities switching to Lake Michigan water, he said. But Ducay said Frankfort remains interested in exploring water options.

There’s an uncertainty about water, said Ben Benson, village administrator in Lockport, which also uses a shallow aquifer water supply.

There is no analysis on the future of the aquifer Lockport uses, although it appears reliable for the foreseeable future. Just in case, however, Benson said he developed an emergency plan to switch to Joliet water should Lockport wells run dry.

“Nobody really knows,” Benson said. “It could be 20 years. It could be 100 years. It could be never. It could be tomorrow. But when you’re responsible for potable water for the public, you have to hedge your bets.”

Evelyn K. Contos (nee Kavouklis) passed away on March 24, 2017, at the age of 92.

She was born and raised in Tarpon Springs, FL, and a 1943 graduate of Tarpon Springs High School. After her marriage in 1948 to William A. Contos, she resided in Jackson Township and Joliet.

She is survived by her sons, Anthony B. Contos, Nick L. (Maria) Contos; daughter, Mary E. (Richard) Tucci; and son, Michael J. (Char) Contos, all of Joliet; six grandchildren, Ann and William Contos, Amanda and Scott Tucci, and Kaitlin and Anthony M.W. Contos. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive. She was preceded in death by her husband, William A. Contos (1971); daughter, Olga Maria (1958); her parents, Lazaros and Olga (nee Moutsatsos) Kavouklis; brother, Nick L. Kavouklis; and sisters, Catherine Vostitsanos and Mary Kavouklis.

Evelyn was a loyal and dedicated wife and an especially proud mother and grandmother. After raising her family, she served as a member of the cafeteria staff for 27 years at the Central Campus of Joliet Township High School, retiring at the age of 80. She was a member of All Saints Greek Orthodox Church, Three Hierarchs Philotochos Society, and the Daughters of Penelope.

He began as an ammunition inspector, which led him to work all over the world, including Germany, the Aleutians, Washington, D.C., Cambodia, Hawaii, the Philippines, Vietnam, Korea, and Japan. Charles eventually moved with his family to Shorewood (Troy) in 1961, working at the Joliet Arsenal until his retirement in 1976. He spent most of those retirement years (nearly 41 of them) as a tireless and devoted husband, father, and grandfather.

His other passions included the Cubs, ornithology, calligraphy, solving word puzzles, and writing poetry, eventually having a compilation of his poems published as “Crossing Purposes” at the age of 89.

Per Charles’ wishes, cremation rites were accorded. A memorial service celebrating the life of Charles Denton will be held Wednesday, March 29, 2017, 6PM to 7PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Joliet Area Community Hospice would be appreciated.

Nicholas A. Ferguson, age 26, passed away suddenly on Saturday, March 25, 2017.

Born July 30, 1990, in Joliet, he was a graduate of Coal City High School. He worked in the construction trades through Laborers Local #75, Crest Hill. Nicholas was a loving son, a devoted brother, and beloved grandson. He was loyal, loving and very hardworking. He will be remembered for his smile and his ability to make everyone’s day brighter.

CHICAGO – When Illinois lawmakers voted in 2009 to hire a private company to run the state’s $2 billion-a-year lottery, they had high hopes of making more money that could be funneled into education and construction projects.

Then the company missed sales goals, and two governors tried to fire Northstar Lottery Group. But Northstar remains on the job more than two years later, and the firm now is able to collect millions of dollars more in fees than under its original contract, an Associated Press review found.

“It shouldn’t be this hard to fire somebody,” said former state Rep. Jack Franks, a Democrat who opposed the private management system and wants the state to resume running the lottery.

News from across the state House speaker’s letter rebukes governor’s claims

SPRINGFIELD – The Democratic speaker of the Illinois House is upbraiding Gov. Bruce Rauner for comments the governor made about him.

Speaker Michael Madigan wrote the Republican a letter Tuesday. It said Rauner made “false statements” a day earlier that Madigan was blocking sale of the state-owned Thompson Center in Chicago.

Madigan said his staff and Rauner’s continue to cooperate on the details.

He said Rauner’s comments were “disingenuous” and “beneath your office.”

The James R. Thompson Center in Chicago’s Loop is a government office behemoth that is underutilized as the state payroll has shrunk. Rauner has

been hired by Jan. 1 under a termination agreement negotiated by Rauner in 2015 – about one year after his predecessor, Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn, tried to end the contract.

But a new manager has yet to be hired. Instead, Illinois has extended Northstar’s contract once and is working on another extension that could

budgeted $300 million from its sale.

Rauner spokeswoman Eleni Demertzis said Madigan is making more excuses for the inaction that has kept the state from having an annual budget for the past two years.

Chicago activists call for transparency in ICE shooting

CHICAGO – Chicago activists and residents called for more transparency Tuesday as officials with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement investigate an agent-involved shooting that left a man wounded and raised questions about the use of force.

Federal authorities and an attorney for the hospitalized man offered conflicting accounts of Monday’s shooting, which occurred at a Chicago home as ICE officers were serving an arrest warrant. ICE asserts an agent fired after someone pointed a gun at arresting agents, while the wounded man’s attorney said his client was unarmed and shot after he opened the door.

The uncertainty fueled concerns by aldermen, immigrant rights advocates

keep the company in place through 2017. Just one company submitted a bid to replace Northstar.

Lottery spokesman Jason Schaumburg said the transition – including ensuring there’s no disruption at the roughly 8,000 locations where lottery tickets are sold – is complicated.

“While getting a new manager in place in a timely manner is of great importance to the state, our priority is to ensure we are getting the best deal for taxpayers and that the new manager performs at a level taxpayers deserve,” Schaumburg said.

Meanwhile, under the termination agreement Rauner’s office negotiated with Northstar, the company may receive up to $17 million a year in “disentanglement fees” in addition to management fees of up to $14 million annually.

Unlike under the original contract, which paid a flat management fee of about $14 million, the payments reflect

and residents in the predominantly Hispanic neighborhood northwest of downtown, who scrutinized why a gun was used by ICE. “We believe that regardless of the circumstances, when a civilian is shot, the community needs to know why,” said Juan Cruz, an organizer with Communities United. “There are a lot of questions the community has.”

Medical pot use rejected for intractable pain, autism

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Public Health has rejected intractable pain and autism spectrum disorder as medical conditions that could be treated with medical cannabis.

The petition to add intractable pain to the medical marijuana program was submitted in July 2015 to the Medical Cannabis Advisory Board.

Department of Public Health Director Nirav Shah on Monday noted in rejecting the petition that none of information submitted demonstrated an individual diagnosed with intractable pain could benefit from medical

Trump welcomes police union leaders to White House

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump expressed concern about violent crime as he welcomed leaders of a national police union to the White House.

Trump hosted a listening session Tuesday with the Fraternal Order of Police.

Opening the event, Trump said public safety was a top concern, specifically citing shootings in Chicago.

Trump said he was “removing criminals all over the country.”

He pledged: “I will work night and day to make American safe again.”

Trump was seated next to FOP president Chuck Canterbury. The national police union, which represents 340,000 members, endorsed Trump for president.

WASHINGTON – The Supreme Court tried to figure out Tuesday whether immigrants should get a second chance in court when bad legal advice leads to a guilty plea and certain deportation.

Devin Nunes, the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, which is conducting one of the congressional investigations, turned aside calls to step aside. Later in the day, the White House vehemently denied a report that it had sought to hobble the testimony of a former acting attorney general before Nunes canceled the hearing where she was to speak.

President Donald Trump’s spokesman, Sean Spicer, lashed out at reporters, claiming they’re seeing conspiracies where none exist.

“If the president puts Russian salad dressing on his salad tonight, somehow that’s a Russian connection,” he suggested.

The embattled House committee is conducting one of three probes into the election campaign, its aftermath and potential contacts between Trump officials and Russians.

The Senate intelligence committee is doing its own investigation, and since late July the FBI has been conducting a counterintelligence investigation into Russia’s meddling and possible coordination with the Trump campaign.

Nunes would not name the source of the information, and his office said he did not intend to share it with other members of the committee.

Nor would he disclose who invited him on the White House grounds for the meeting. He described the source as an intelligence official, not a White House official. In an interview on CNN, he suggested the president’s aides were unaware of the meeting.

Trump has used Nunes’ revelations to defend his unproven claim that Barack Obama tapped phones at Trump Tower. In a series of tweets Monday night, Trump said that instead of probing his associates, the committee should be investigating his Democrat opponent Hillary Clinton’s ties to the Kremlin.

“Trump Russia story is a hoax,” he tweeted.

Adding to the swirl of questions was the publication of a series of letters dated March 23 and March 24 involving a lawyer for former Acting Attorney General Sally Yates.

and former director of national intelligence James Clapper, had agreed to testify publicly before the House intelligence committee.

The canceled hearing would have been the first opportunity for the public to hear Yates’ account of her role in the firing of Trump’s first national security adviser, Michael Flynn.

The letters from lawyer David O’Neil, published by The Washington Post, appeared to be in response to a meeting O’Neil had at the Justice Department on March 23 in advance of the hearing.

In them, O’Neil pushes back against what he says is Justice Department guidance on what Yates could say about conversations she had with Trump – conversations the department indicated could be covered by executive privilege.

“We believe that the Department’s position in this regard is overbroad, incorrect, and inconsistent with the Department’s historical approach to the congressional testimony of current and former senior officials,” O’Neil wrote in a March 23 letter to Justice Department official Samuel Ramer. He also wrote that Yates’ testimony would cover details that others have publicly recounted.

Judge approves plan on fix for 18,000 Flint water lines

The Associated Press DETROIT – Water lines at 18,000 homes in Flint, Michigan, will be replaced under a landmark deal approved by a judge Tuesday, marking a milestone in the effort to overcome the disastrous decision in 2014 to draw water from a river without treating it to prevent lead contamination.

Flint will be responsible for replacing lead and galvanized-steel lines that bring water into homes. The cost could be as high as $97 million, with federal and state governments covering the bill. Pipes at more than 700 homes have been replaced so far.

The court-ordered pipe replacement is unprecedented in the U.S., lead attorney Dimple Chaudhary of the Natural Resources Defense Council said. The group sued Flint and Michigan on behalf of residents, along

with the American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan.

“Flint proved that even while poisoned, we’re not just victims,” said resident Melissa Mays, a plaintiff in the case. “We’re fighters.”

Flint’s water was tainted with lead for at least 18 months, starting in spring 2014. While under the control of state-appointed financial managers, the city tapped the Flint River as its water source while a new pipeline was being built to Lake Huron. But the river water wasn’t treated to reduce corrosion. As a result, lead leached from old pipes and fixtures.

Under the new agreement, pipes serving 18,000 homes will be replaced

by January 2020. Michigan will continue to provide water filters, but the state can start closing free bottled water sites in Flint depending on demand and results of water quality tests.

approved the settlement, which was the result of weeks of negotiations involving a court-appointed mediator.

The judge praised Gov. Rick Snyder for suggesting negotiations after his administration lost two major court rulings on door-to-door water delivery.

Lawson said the settlement was “fair, adequate, reasonable, consistent with the public interest.”

Crews have been replacing pipes for months in Flint, where residents still feel betrayed by a series of devastating decisions that caused the crisis.

“The pipes are corroded inside,” said Ron Blackmer, 55, who watched holes being drilled outside his home.

“There’s nothing they can do to fix them other than replace them. The right thing to do is replace them.”

Marc Edwards, an expert at Virginia Tech who in 2015 warned about dangerous lead levels after state regulators repeatedly dismissed the concerns,

said the agreement is a good deal for Flint’s roughly 100,000 residents.

He told The Associated Press that with improved water quality, temporary use of filters and new pipes, “Flint residents really have nothing to worry about other than the lost trust and history of this disaster, which may take a generation to repair.”

Residents who get new water lines will be urged to continue using a filter for six months. There will be no cost for replacement cartridges or household testing kits.

There will be tests for lead in the Flint system every six months until one year after the replacement of water lines. An independent monitor also will check household water samples for lead, and the results will be posted online.

The state will pay $895,000 in legal fees and expenses to lawyers representing residents.

CINCINNATI – A Cincinnati nightclub operator denies that some patrons were allowed to bypass security checks that included metal-detection wands before a gunbattle erupted, killing one man and injuring 16 other people.

Julian “Jay” Rodgers rejected claims that people could pay to avoid the long line to get into the club without being checked. Police estimate 200 people were inside early Sunday when a dispute escalated into a gunfight in which more than 20 shots were fired by an unknown number of shooters in the popular club near the Ohio River east of downtown Cincinnati.

“There have been untrue reports that certain patrons were allowed to enter the club without passing through security,” Rodgers, a veteran operator of Cincinnati-area entertainment venues, said in a statement late Monday. “This was not permitted.”

Rodgers said two of four privately paid uniformed Cincinnati police officers there had a clear view of security procedures and helped “with the flow of the lines.”

Police Chief Eliot Isaac has emphasized that the officers working off-duty security details remained outside before the shooting and that the club was responsible for its inside security. Isaac said he was aware of reports of a security bypass line, but police hadn’t confirmed that.

The Hamilton County coroner’s office said Tuesday that O’Bryan Spikes, the 27-year-old man killed in the shooting, died from a single gunshot to the chest.

WXIX-TV reported Isaac, the city manager and others attended a vigil Tuesday evening outside the nightclub for Spikes and the other shooting victims. Isaac spoke to the crowd, calling the shooting a “senseless act.”

Rodgers said Cameo had planned to move out in May because of the landlord’s planned sale of the property but will instead close its door for good Friday. He earlier voluntarily surrendered its liquor license.

City officials said Cameo had been the scene of past violence, including a shooting inside the club on New Year’s Day in 2015 and one in the parking lot in September of that year.

Ohio liquor agents said the club was cited for drug use and drug possession violations after an inspection following Sunday’s shooting. Agents reported finding marijuana in plain view along with partially smoked marijuana in an employee-only section.

Adam Johnson of the Ohio Investigative Unit said Monday that the club was cited once before, in 2015, for drug abuse.

‘Repeal and Replace’ fails; now Obamacare needs fixing The failure of the Republican-led effort to repeal and replace Obamacare represents a big victory for all kinds of citizens and interest groups that analyzed the proposed legislation and said no dice.

The day before House Speaker Paul Ryan decided not to take a vote on the American Health Care Act, a Quinnipiac Poll found that only 17 percent of American voters approved of the GOP’s legislation, while 56 percent did not.

You can hardly call that a vote of support for what the bill was trying to do. Too many people would be hurt, and the public along with editorial writers in newspapers across the country, got that message: The GOP plan would cause real pain. Members of Congress heard it loud and clear, and many responded to what they heard.

Older Americans would have had to pay more, sometimes thousands of dollars more to get health insurance.

In 32 states, millions of Americans with incomes slightly above the poverty line who had gained coverage under their state’s Medicaid expansion program would have lost their coverage.

Others already on Medicaid or joining in the future would also have been affected. The proposal called for cutting back the federal government’s commitment to fund health care for the poor by changing the way it would

That would have left the states, which jointly fund Medicaid, strapped for funds to cover everyone needing medical treatment as well as middle-class families who required help paying for long-term care. Medicaid pays for about half of all nursing home stays.

The Affordable Care Act (ACA), or Obamacare, had mandated that every insurance policy sold in the individual market where people without employer or government coverage must shop had to include 10 essential benefits.

Under the Republicans’ plan, that mandate – that all plans include things such as prescription drug coverage, emergency room services, maternity care and mental health treatment – would have disappeared.

Dropping any of the essential benefits would have helped some insurance companies whose individual policies provided only bare-bones coverage until 2010 when the ACA required essential benefits to be included. Insurers would have been able to sell skimpy and cheaper coverage to those willing to gamble.

Now, even though the “repeal and

replace,” effort failed, we are left with a health law that needs repairs of its own.

“Many of the criticisms of the ACA are, in fact, valid,” says RoseAnn DeMoro, executive director of the National Nurses United, the largest union and professional organization of registered nurses. “For all the improvements under the ACA – primarily the expansion of Medicaid and crackdown on some insurance abuses – the ACA still left 28 million without health coverage – and millions more struggling with unpayable bills and escalating out-of-pocket costs.”

DeMoro’s assessment hits home to many readers of this column who have complained about higher and higher premiums, sky-high deductibles and coinsurance, and lack of choice. Many have limited choice of doctors, hospitals and other providers in insurers’ restrictive networks.

Even worse, in some parts of the country there’s only one insurer to buy from.

Those problems stem from the underlying premise of Obamacare itself. The ACA was built on top of the existing private insurance system, which means that it will work only if insurers find it to be good business.

As the years went on and sick people with pre-existing conditions flocked to buy coverage, which the law guaranteed they could do, insurers found that Obamacare was not

good business. They left the market or made consumers pay more out of pocket or through higher premiums.

The ACA did not provide for any serious cost containment, and the GOP plan didn’t call for any either.

Medical inflation continues as doctors, hospitals and drug companies raise their prices, and new expensive medical technology comes on the market before there is good evidence that it works.

One consulting actuary put it this way, “Medical inflation will continue until doctors decide they have enough money and don’t raise their fees.”

It’s not clear that the country’s divisive politics will allow for any fix of the ACA’s problems, let alone put any teeth into cost control measures.

There could be renewed interest in a public option that could allow people to choose government-sponsored insurance rather than a policy from a commercial carrier.

Or maybe there would be a move to let people in their 50s or early 60s buy into Medicare, which could spark the beginning of a movement toward Medicare for All. I’m not betting on any of this right now, but as the failure of the GOP’s “repeal and replace” shows, the public is demanding a seat at the table.

They then threatened her with an investigation by the city inspector general.

Some have occurred in the WJOL/ Don Ladas Memorial Tournament, which is scheduled Thursday and Saturday.

What occurred in Tuesday’s nonconference matchup was one of those other kinds of games as Minooka rolled to a 13-0, five-inning victory behind junior right-hander Seth Gutknecht.

“I absolutely know better than to think anything is going to come easily,” Indians coach Jeff Petrovic said, anticipating Thursday’s 3 p.m. game at Joliet Central between Minooka (30) and Providence (2-1), who between them have claimed more than half of the WJOL titles. “We have had some great games, and I have been on the other end of a few games like this one, too.”

The eight-team tournament field is as deep in potentially strong teams as it ever has been.

“There are teams that are traditionally good like Providence, Joliet Catholic, Lockport and I’ll put us in there, too,” Petrovic said. “But now you go outside the normal circle and you find more good teams.”

Besides the four Petrovic mentioned, Joliet West, Joliet Central, Lincoln-Way West and Plainfield Central are in the tournament.

Lincoln-Way Central holds off Lincoln-Way West

cherron@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Lincoln-Way Central’s boys water polo team is optimistic that it can advance to a thirdstraight sectional final and contend for its second trip to state in three years, while Lincoln-Way West has taken awhile to put it together this season.

There wasn’t much that separated the rivals when they met on Tuesday for a SouthWest Suburban Conference match at the westside campus.

The Warriors rallied to force a tie with just over four minutes remaining before the Knights collected five of the final six goals to capture a 14-10 victory.

A sign of how much the shift in the Lincoln-Way schools has affected the sport, four players who had prominent roles on the area’s last two state teams – 2015 Central and 2016 East – competed, but only one still was on the same team as when he went to state.

That was Central’s Matt Klock, who collected half of his game-high six goals in the final period to help the Knights hold off the Warriors’ challenge.

“For Seth to not walk anybody when he didn’t know he was going to pitch until five minutes before the game was outstanding, and Nick Airola did a great job behind the plate,” Petrovic said. “Seth competed in the strike zone.

They hit balls hard but at us, and he let our defense work.

That’s what we want from our pitchers.”

“I felt really good,” said Gutknecht, who threw 60 pitches. “I had tendinitis last fall and it was not feeling great in the winter, but this was a good start. It felt good to beat them. They destroyed us last year.”

The Indians supported Gutknecht with 13 runs on seven hits.

“There were kids from two schools coming together, but there’s always been just one team since water polo is just so close. It was cool to play against Cody (Torres) and I know that West gone through some tough times, but they played really hard today.

“The East kids have kind of been our saving grace since they gave us a lot of people and a lot of new ideas. I really like how we have so many good players on this team and we have two full lines of kids who can play really well and not many teams have that.”

A big key for the Knights has been the addition of six players from East, including two who played key roles last season. They are Mason Maze, who scored two goals, and goalie Jacob Culver, who made several big saves.

“I definitely think that we’ve melded together really well,” Maze said.

“We played on our club team together (Lincoln-Way Area Water Polo), so it’s just like being with old friends again and getting back together with the team and all of our guys are close already. I think that we could have won all of the games that we lost, but we just made some small mistakes.”

They had 16 runners who reached via walk or hit batsman against five Providence pitchers, all of whom are juniors.

“This game was embarrassing,” Smith said. “We’re trying kids out. We have a whole new staff, and this was not a good day for any of them. They’re all juniors, and they seemed to be scared and nervous. You can’t go out there that way against a good team.

“I do like the way we swung the bat even though we didn’t score any runs. We’ll be OK there. Ultimately, we’ll be OK in general, but we will have go through some major growing pains with this team.

I have hope for these guys, I really do.”

Luke Faifer had two hits and two RBIs and Jackson Shepherd, elevated to the 2-hole when Butler was scratched, added two hits and an RBI for Minooka.

Logan O’Brien knocked in two with a bases-loaded single, and Hayden Laczynski drew four walks and singled in five trips to the plate.

The Knights took an 8-6 lead into the final period and went up by three scores just 14 seconds into that on a goal by Klock. But West battled back with goals from Tyler Hubbs, Josh Carlson (five goals) and Cody Torres (four goals) to tie things at 9-9 with 4:05 remaining.

But Ryan Burke put Central back up for good with 3:39 left and then Maze and Klock assisted each other on goals to make it 12-9 with 2:13 left.

After Carlson connected again for the hosts, Klock and Josh Fox closed out the scoring.

“In our conference and sectional, I think it could go to anyone and it will be intense,” first-year Knights coach Jacob Bernard said. “By the time we get to sectionals, I feel like we’ll have everything down pat. We know how to play, we just have to make sure that we do it from the beginning all the way to the end of the game. Our guys have kept pushing each other. We didn’t have East-Central diversity, they welcomed each other and blended right away.”

Things were tight in the first half with Klock scoring three goals and Dylan Sterling getting two of his three goals to give Central a 6-5 lead. After

Torres tied things early in the third, Klock and Sterling connected again to make it 8-6 with seven minutes left.

“This was probably one of the best performances that we’ve had this season,” West coach Steve Anderson said. “We were in it the entire time and that game could have gone either way. We lost a few starters at the beginning of the year, so this is a relatively new group and I only have three guys with real varsity experience. But I have a lot of guys who’ve jumped into that role and are doing a fantastic job.

We’re not very deep, but we’re committed.”

The Warriors have benefited from the addition of former Knight Torres, who was a key player on Central’s state team.

“That definitely was the best that we’ve played together this year,” Torres said. “We were in a championship game at the Schaumburg tournament and didn’t even play as good as we did today. We played a lot better in this game than a lot of people expected.

What brought us back into the game was not giving up when we were down by three. But Central is good and has a deep bench and that’s one of the reasons that they outswam us a little bit.”

Yoshimoto had a solid night with 48 assists, four kills, two aces, four digs and two blocks (one solo).

Yoshimoto was able to spread it across the net and get the middles involved. In the fifth game, he put up good sets so the outsides could put away the match.

Coenen had a team-high 18 kills,

while Weirskircher, Schmiegelt and Hodul tallied eight each.

Hodul (.615 hitting percentage) and Yoshimoto (.571 hitting percentage) had very effective hitting percentages for the night.

Minooka graduate Mitch Perinar added nine kills, and Jake Walenga had five for Lewis.

Anchoring the defense, Michael Simmons tallied 14 digs, while Perinar added nine and Coenen had eight.

Ben Plaisted was the most dominant player for Loyola (14-9, 7-4). The junior opposite totaled 24 kills, 14 coming during the first two games.

Of the past few home wins, this victory for the Flyers had the most contributions across the board, where different players carried the match at different times.

Dernier to speak at Frontier League All-Star luncheon SUBMITTED REPORTS JOLIET – The Joliet Slammers have announced 1984 Cubs Gold Glove outfielder Bobby Dernier as the guest speaker during the Frontier League All-Star Game luncheon hosted by the Slammers.

The luncheon will be July 12 in The Grand Ballroom at Joliet Union Station. Dernier will sign autographs for attendees.

Dernier was the leadoff hitter for the Cubs’ 1984 National League East championship team. Hall of Fame second baseman Ryne Sandberg batted second, and the leadoff pair was dubbed “The Daily Double” by Cubs announcer Harry Caray.

The luncheon is open to the public and will include the Frontier League Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

ROMEOVILLE – Starting strong had been a weakness for the Lewis men’s volleyball team in the second half of the season.

That wasn’t the case for the Flyers on Tuesday night against their biggest rival, Loyola.

Lewis started hot in the match with Ryan Coenen, Jacob Schmiegelt, John Hodul and Matt Yoshimoto all hitting over .600 to lead them to a 2518 Game 1 win, and an eventual 2518, 21-25, 23-25, 25-21, 15-11 win in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association home match.

It wouldn’t be a MIVA rivalry game if Loyola didn’t respond, however.

Loyola won the next two games,

25-21, 25-23, to take a 2-1 lead. Lewis fought back to force a Game 5, marking the fifth time in the past six Lewis versus Loyola matches that it went to five games.

Things appeared pretty bleak in the fifth game, with Loyola taking a 6-3 lead.

When the Flyers couldn’t get their offense going, senior outside hitter Trevor Weirskircher turned on the heat. Weirskircher became an offensive spark late in the fourth game and early in the fifth and was a key to Lewis fighting its way back.

Lewis (20-6, 11-3 MIVA) called a timeout after the slow start and then scored two consecutive points to cut the deficit.

As they have in several of the 10 five-game matches they have played this year, the Flyers started building

PREP SOFTBALL: PROVIDENCE CATHOLIC SEASON PREVIEW

Consistent offense key to Providence’s hopes

Shaw Media correspondent NEW LENOX – With a good portion of his lineup returning and some talented youngsters stepping in, Providence softball coach Jay Biesterfeld feels there’s no excuse for the Celtics not to be a consistent offensive force this season.

“Last year, we had some games where the bats just disappeared,” he said. “Overall, the numbers were good, but we didn’t have the consistency. That’s what we need this year. Our goal is to put up at least three or four runs every game. If we can do that, we have a great chance for success.”

The Celtics have the pieces in place to make that happen.

Sophomore outfielder Lex Leighton had a huge freshman season, hitting .398 with nine home runs and 32 RBIs. Junior first baseman Emily Pilon hit .374 with six home runs and 34 RBIs. Second baseman Jessica Miklos (.371, four homers), a Wisconsin-Parkside recruit, is a strong senior leader, both with her bat and with her glove.

“If we can consistently hit four runs, we’re going to win a lot of games,” Pilon said. “We have a lot of power and we have a lot of speed. We have a lot of potential with our lineup.

We’re confident in our offense.”

Junior Taylor Young and sophomore utility player Shannon Smith also hit over .300 last season and are expected to take on bigger roles this season.

Providence hopes to score runs to take some of the pressure off freshman

Laila Summers, who is expected to be the team’s ace pitcher. Senior Kailey Zych also will see time in the circle.

“We’re going to want to put up more runs to help Laila,” Miklos said.

“We expect to have a good defense behind her. I really like how our defense looks. Playing good defensively gives us momentum to go hit better, too.”

Biesterfeld thinks Summers is ready for the challenge.

“Laila throws about four pitches,” he said. “We’re going to keep working with her and trying to help her improve. We’re stressing being able to locate pitches. It doesn’t matter how hard you throw if you don’t locate.

“If we can score some runs and help her out, that’ll be big.”

Several underclassmen will get consistent playing time for the Celtics, including freshman Teagan Sopczak and sophomore Maggie Joutras, both of whom can play several different positions.

Pilon has liked what she’s seen from the newcomers.

“These underclassmen are phenomenal,” she said. “They’re going to be a great asset to the team. The older

girls really know what they’re doing and they’re bringing a lot of wisdom to the team. It’s a really good mix.”

Miklos will be one of the girls providing that wisdom.

“I like to motivate and lead by example,” she said. “I try to show the younger girls the ropes and make them be confident in themselves and know they can play at the varsity level.”

The Celtics finished 29-7 last year, letting a late lead slip away in a 4-2 sectional semifinal loss to Lincoln-Way East.

“There’s definitely a bad taste in their mouth,” Biesterfeld said. “We were four outs from advancing and we thought we could get to state and possibly win it all. We’re going to do everything we can to make another deep run this year.”

Pilon can only shake her head when she thinks back to the loss to the Griffins. She’s sure to use it as motivation, though.

“It’s a tough game to look back on,” she said. “We were right there. We’re definitely using it as motivation to get further this year. Of course, our ultimate goal is state.”

Romeoville building off strong showing at 2016 regional

Shaw Media correspondent ROMEOVILLE – The most anticipated softball season in recent history is beginning at Romeoville. That’s because the Spartans return seven regulars from a regional-final team of a year ago, and are poised to put together a memorable season.

“It is the first time in my 12 years that we have made it to regional championship game,” coach Christina Douglas said of the Spartans’ run to the Plainfield South Regional final.

“Losing by one run was hard. These girls are ready to get back there.”

Romeoville was stumbling through an 11-14 season a year ago.

However, the Spartans beat Thornton, Andrew and pushed favorite Plainfield Central to the brink in an 11-10 loss in the regional championship game. Will that experience do wonders for them?

“Absolutely,” Douglas said. “The growth of this team in the past few years has been amazing. The way we are progressing through our practice goals and game preparations is unreal.

Outlook: A regional championship berth in 2016 has paved the way for the most anticipated season in Romeoville history.

Seven returnees are another reason the Spartans are poised for what could be their most successful season to date.

“Again, we want to simplify our goals to a game-by-game basis to prepare us for a regional championship game. We all have it in the back of our mind, but each pitch, at-bat, ball, game and practice is what we need to perfect before we can get there.”

Seniors focused on spearheading the Spartans to lofty heights are outfielders Ally Zeigler, Miranda Brucki and Hannah Anderson, and first baseman Bailey Kavaliunas. Zeigler missed last season with an injury but

is back to 100 percent.

“Ally will be a huge asset to our team this year,” Douglas said. “After missing last season due to an early injury, we expect her to lead our team offensively and play a solid center field. Bailey leads by example and is a strong left-handed hitter who can put up good numbers at the plate and Miranda and Hannah have worked hard offensively.”

Returning All-Southwest Prairie Conference selection Audrey Sizemore is the Spartans’ top pitcher. She went 8-7 with a 2.06 ERA last season.

Araya Robinette is penciled in as the No. 2 pitcher.

“Audrey has improved a great amount since last season and we expect her to keep our opponents’ hitters guessing and off balance at the plate,” Douglas said. “Araya is a great athlete who can be utilized as a utility player when she isn’t pitching. Offensively, she has great power at the plate and speed on the bases.”

Junior Maddie Massoro returns behind the plate after posting a .383 on-base percentage in 2016. Returning at third base is junior Katie Szulczyk. Junior Brittany Osborne, an

All-SPC pick a year ago, is lost for the season because of a knee injury. Osborne led the team with a .429 batting average a season ago.

“Maddie and Katie are both great athletes,” Douglas said. “We expect them to improve their offensive numbers and continue to work hard defensively.”

Senior Taylor Davis and juniors Rhiannon Zeffield, Asia Robinette and Abi Orfino are expected to play important roles.

“We expect these girls to play solid defense and put up decent numbers at the plate,” Douglas said. “The girls have been working extremely hard and they have a great chemistry. I am excited to see what the season has in store for us. We are ready.”

Competing in the loaded SPC, which welcomes Joliet Central and Joliet West, is good preparation for the state tournament.

“We want to compete in every game, finish in the top three in the conference and advance through the regional tournament,” Douglas said.

“The desire, passion, willingness to be a team player and perfecting our game day by day will be critical.”

Of this and that: Providence Catholic graduate Sam Travis has enjoyed a second straight strong spring training with the Boston Red Sox, hitting .318 with three home runs, 12 RBIs and a .991 OPS. But while Travis still figures to be the Red Sox first baseman of the future, he has been reassigned to minor league camp and will not make his major-league debut to open the season. The area needing a little work is defense.

In a story on mlb.com, Red Sox manager John Farrell was quoted that Travis “is improving, particularly with his footwork. If needed, could we put him at first base now?

The answer to that would be ‘yes.’

But we would like to see further improvement on the defensive side of things. Offensively, he’s got a knack to hit and impact the baseball.”

Foltynewicz No. 5 starter

Heading into spring training, the word from the Atlanta camp was that the job as the fifth starter in the Braves’ rotation was Minooka graduate Mike Foltynewicz’s to lose. He had a good spring, ensuring he held onto the assignment. He is scheduled to make his first regular-season start April 8 in Pittsburgh.

Foltynewicz allowed nine hits and three runs Monday in an 11-3 victory over Detroit. In 232/3 spring innings, he posted a 2.66 ERA and generally accomplished his objective of doing a better job staying under control when having to pitch out of trouble.

If he stays healthy, he could be in for a solid season in the big leagues.

Roark getting ready

Tanner Roark (Wilmington) pitched a strong game last Saturday in Washington’s 4-1 win over Houston. It was his first start back with the Nationals after throwing four shutout innings for Team USA in its World Baseball Classic semifinal win over Japan.

Roark went 51/3 innings and threw 73 pitches against the Astros, allowing one run on three hits and striking out five. For the Nationals, with one spring start left, he is 1-0 with a 0.73 ERA. In 121/3 innings, he has allowed one run on seven hits and no walks while striking out 12.

Near miss for Ekhomu

Florida State freshman guard Nicole Ekhomu (Joliet Catholic) almost made it to the NCAA Women’s Basketball Final Four, but the bid ended Monday night when the Seminoles (28-7) dropped a 71-64 decision to South Carolina in the championship

game of the Stockton Regional.

Ekhomu played eight minutes and did not have any statistics other than one foul. For the season, she played in 32 games and averaged 13.5 minutes, 3.4 points, 1.7 rebounds, 0.8 assists and 0.4 steals.

Novak starring at Wisconsin

Senior third baseman Sara Novak (Minooka) is hitting .351 (26 for 74) for the Wisconsin softball team, which is 23-3 overall and 2-1 in the Big Ten Conference under coach Yvette Healy, a former all-state softball player at Providence. Novak has six doubles, a .432 slugging percentage and .463 on-base percentage.

An Academic All-Big Ten selection the last two years who is

studying to be a veterinarian, Novak is hoping to help lead the Badgers back to the NCAA Tournament, a feat they accomplished under Healy’s guidance in Novak’s freshman season.

As a Minooka senior in 2013, Novak helped the Indians win the Class 4A state championship, and she was named the Herald-News Softball Player of the Year.

Novak’s parents are John and Kay Kitchell-Novak. Her mom was a starter in volleyball, basketball and softball at Joliet West and a fouryear scholarship pitcher for University of St. Francis.

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Geno Auriemma and the UConn Huskies have been on an unprecedented Final Four run, making it there 10 straight years.

This trip might have been the least expected of them.

With a trio of All-Americans lost to graduation, Auriemma had questions about his inexperienced group of Huskies. They answered every single one of them.

“They’ve owned the whole month of March, they weren’t just along for the ride,” Auriemma said. “It’s theirs and that’s a huge step. That’s a big step, to go from riding in the backseat on a trip you’re going to, to all of a sudden, you’re in charge of driving the bus, you’re responsible for getting us there.”

Next up for the Huskies, who have won 111 consecutive games, is Mississippi State on Friday night in Dallas.

Stanford will face South Carolina in the other national semifinal, giving the Southeastern Conference two teams in the Final Four for the first time since 2008.

That was the last season the conference won a championship. The Bulldogs are playing in their first Final Four after beating Baylor in the Oklahoma City Regional.

The Huskies routed Mississippi State by 60 points last season in the Sweet 16, but Auriemma was impressed with what he saw in the Bulldogs win over Baylor.

“That’s not the same Mississippi State team we played last year here,” the Hall of Fame coach said. “That’s a whole different team. A lot of the same

players, but that’s a whole different team.”

While the Bulldogs lack Final Four experience, they are led by a talented group of upperclassmen.

“For our seniors, they believed in a vision when it wasn’t real easy to believe. I’m really happy for them,” Mississippi State coach Vic Schaefer said.

“I know how hard they’ve worked. I know the blood, sweat and tears, the commitment they’ve put into this.”

The Cardinal and coach Tara VanDerveer return to the national semifinals after a two-year hiatus.

They too were perennial participants, making it there in six of seven seasons from 2008-2014.

If Stanford and UConn can win on Friday, it would create a matchup of the Samuelson sisters, with Katie Lou playing for the Huskies.

South Carolina rebounded after a disappointing exit from the NCAA Tournament last season to reach the Final Four for the second time in three years. The Gamecocks lost a heartbreaking game to Notre Dame in 2015, falling by one point to the Irish.

After surviving a second-round scare against Arizona State, the Gamecocks reached the Final Four with victories over Quinnipiac and Florida State. Dawn Staley’s team has had to reinvent itself after losing senior center Alaina Coates to an ankle injury in the SEC Tournament.

The Gamecocks joined their men’s program in the Final Four, becoming the 13th school to have both teams reach the national semifinals in the same season. Only UConn has won both titles in the same season, last doing it in 2014.

NEW YORK – Josh Okogie scored a game-high 22 points to lead Georgia Tech to a 76-61 win over Cal State Bakersfield in a NIT semifinal Tuesday night.

Ben Lammers finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds for Georgia Tech, which will take on either Texas Christian or Central Florida in the championship game Thursday night.

Quinton Stephens added 13 points, and Tadric Jackson had 12.

The Yellow Jackets led virtually the entire game, due to a strong defensive

effort and excellent ball management.

Georgia Tech forced 15 turnovers while only committing seven. Eighteen of the Yellow Jackets’ 76 points came off Cal State Bakersfield turnovers.

Sharp shooting aided the Yellow Jackets. Georgia Tech connected on 43.3 percent of its shots (26 for 60) while limiting the Roadrunners to 35 percent shooting (21 for 60).

At halftime, the Yellow Jackets (21-15) had a 36-26 lead highlighted by Jackson’s running 3-pointer at the buzzer. Georgia Tech put away the game midway through the second half following Dedrick Basile’s 3, which sliced the lead to 40-31.

“I like how it feels. The approach is good, trusting that, being able to trust myself to lay off pitches not in the zone when you’re being aggressive in the strike zone, swinging at strikes.

That’s what I want to do.”

Teammate Jon Lester, who admitted that he struggled at times the first season into his $155 million deal, called it “just human nature” for Heyward to have struggled in his first season after the big deal – and to rebound to career norms after.

“You’re coming into a place where you don’t know a lot of guys,” Lester said. “You’re trying to prove you’re worth something. You’re trying to prove to the city, to your teammates, your family, everybody else. …

“Now it’s a matter of he can just go out and play.”

MESA, Ariz. – On the seventh pitch of an at-bat in the sixth inning Tuesday, the Cubs’ Jason Heyward lined a double into the right-center gap off the Giants’ Matt Cain. In the game before that, Heyward walked three times. In his final at-bat of the game before that, he homered.

So is he fixed? Is the $184 million right fielder who slumped to the worst offensive season of his career in 2016 back to at least career-average form now that the off-season work and nearly all of spring training is done?

“I don’t know,” he said. “You’ll get the answer to that at the end of the season.”

Maybe that’s the nature of these things. It’s certainly the only part that matters.

Trade opens door for Jacob May in center field

SURPRISE, Ariz. – Jacob May got a text from his uncle Carlos, the former Sox who batted third in front of Dick Allen on those good White Sox teams in the early 1970s, on Tuesday morning.

“He was like, ‘I’m excited for you,’ ’’ May said. “Get used to the cold.’’

The Sox trade of outfielder Peter Bourjos to the Rays for cash or a player to be named Tuesday cleared room for May to be the White Sox Opening Day center fielder when the they host the Tigers at Guaranteed Rate Field on Monday. The forecast calls for rain and a high of 55, which probably means about 44 degrees by the time the seventh inning rolls around.

It will feel like 75 with sunny skies to May. He’s going to be a big leaguer for the first time, just like Uncle Carlos and his grandfather Lee, who hit 354 homers for the Reds, Astros, Orioles and Royals from 1966-82.

Lee called his grandson Tuesday to congratulate him. He, Carlos and Jacob’s father, Lee Jr. – a Mets first-round draft choice in 1986 – have been monitoring 26-year-old Jacob’s progress since

the Sox selected him in the third round of the draft in 2013. Prospect Charlie Tilson’s foot injury opened a door, and May – who was 2 for 4 including an infield single against the Royals on Tuesday – took advantage by hitting .349 with two walks, four stolen bases in five attempts, two doubles, three triples and a homer this spring. He struck out 14 times.

By letting go of Bourjos, 29, who was signed to a minor-league contract and would have been paid $1.2 million, the Sox look more like the rebuilding outfit they intend to be. For May, the time is now to see what he can do against major league pitching and prove he can be part of the Sox future.

“It’s a surreal feeling right now,’’ he said.

That May led off and played center field and shortstop Tim Anderson batted second against the Royals on Tuesday only added to the goosebumps. May and Anderson did so often at Class A Winston-Salem in 2014, AA Birmingham in 2015 and AAA Charlotte in 2016.

“Oh, man. It’s so exciting,’’ May said.

“Going about through this organization, it was 1 and 2, Tim Anderson and me, every step. It’s comfortable, it’s something I’m used to and it would be an

honor and dream come true to be in that leadoff spot. To be in the lineup period or on the roster is just an honor. I thank God every day I have the ability to walk into this locker room. It’s exciting and a blessing.’’

May knows he has to stay healthy and that has been a challenge. A bruised right pinky cut his 2014 season short, the 2015 season was interrupted when he crashed into Anderson and suffered a concussion and his 2016 campaign was limited to 83 games because of abdominal injuries.

Renteria wouldn’t commit May to a regular leadoff role, not wanting to add any more pressure, and said the plan is to play him “five to seven” days a week.

Even if he stays healthy, there will likely be rough patches.

“Jacob has done a very nice job,’’ Renteria said. “He’s played very, very well defensively and offensively. He can put the bat on the ball and do quite a few things. There’s still a learning curve.

He might have a bump or bruise along the way, but hopefully we will be able to manage that and get him through and keep moving forward.’’

Royals 7, White Sox 4 Opening Day starter Jose Quintana scaled back his workload in his final start, as usual, pitching against Brewers minor leaguers on the back fields at Camelback Ranch while the Sox were playing the Royals in Surprise.

Quintana threw 48 pitches (38 strikes) over three-plus innings, allowed two hits and a walk while striking out three. Quintana gave up two runs, one earned and said he finished his spring preparation on a high note.

The Sox’ top two back relievers, Nate Jones and David Robertson, threw one inning each.

Infielder Yolmer Sanchez (2-for-2, RBI, run) raised his average to .321 and left fielder/ first baseman/DH Cody Asche (1-for-3) raised his to .310. They appear set to make the Opening Day roster with IF/OF Leury Garcia and DH/corner infielder Matt Davidson.

Omar Narvaez and Geovany Soto are the likely catchers on the 25-man roster, which might not be announced till the weekend.

Merichka’s is family owned since 1933, famous for their fine dining and po’boy If you go

MYSTERY DINER CREST HILL – I found it hard to believe anyone living in the Joliet area has not eaten at Merichka’s.

Seriously.

But such was the case with a good friend. So we recently remedied it.

For anyone who doesn’t know (or who does know and forgot), Merichka’s began in 1933 with Merichka “Mary” Zdralevich and her son, Joe, a lithographer, selling sandwiches from Mary’s home to feed passing factory workers, according to the Merichka’s website and a previous Herald-News story.

Today, the family’s third and fourth generations continue the family business, the website also stated. Merichka’s can seat 300 and serves about 5,000 people a week, the Herald-News story said.

Now, the Merichka’s name is associated with its famous po’boy sandwich: 6 ounces of tenderized cube steak on a toasted roll drenched in minced garlic and butter, mozzarella cheese extra.

Knowing my friend likes po’boys, I felt this person was overdue to try the “real” one. So off we went.

Wait time was minimal, despite three large parties that day. While waiting, my friend read the sign announcing the daily specials and decided the “build a burger” was most appealing.

I quickly reminded my friend of the mission: po’boys.

But once seated, this person leisurely scanned the menu, which now includes a po’boy made with chicken. My friend ordered an appetizer: a combination platter of onion rings, chicken tenders and cheese sticks (favorites of

And then my friend placed a “build a burger” order.

Soup or salad?

Choices that day were split pea, minestrone and chicken noodle. My friend ordered the chicken noodle. I ordered a house salad with my po’boy, passing on the double-baked potato that’s also put Merichka’s on the Joliet map, since I knew the appetizer portions were extremely generous.

While we waited, my friend gestured to one of the employees changing a nearby tablecloth and said, “single service,” meaning each customer gets a fresh tablecloth, a mark of quality.

The soup and salad came first. My

friend pronounced the soup “perfect,” with the right amount seasoning, al dente noodles (translation: not soggy) and “super tender” chicken.

My salad looked and tasted “super fresh,” according to my friend, who noted the lack of ribs on the iceberg lettuce, a sign of quality. I liked the grated carrots and finely chopped purple cabbage, evenly tossed, that add texture. Even the ranch dressing I ordered on the side and the croutons had a light fresh taste and texture.

The cheese sticks were typical of cheese sticks anywhere, but my friend liked the light crispy breading on the tenders that also had “a decent amount of seasoning.” Yes, they were delicious.

My friend admired the rustic onions: uneven in size with a flaky coating and a satisfying crisp when biting through to the tender insides.

The burger was large (as were the strips of bacon topping it) and smothered in American cheese. It was also juicy, tender and more than this person could eat in one sitting. My friend’s fries were fries, but they filled half the platter.

And my po’boy? Exactly as I described above and delectable as always.

Dessert options were chocolate cake, ice cream or cheesecake. Dessert wasn’t homemade (I asked), but the cheesecake was Eli’s and as this person had never tried Eli’s cheesecake either (gasp!), we split a slice of chocolate chip, although we could have ordered plain or tiramisu.

We brought back enough food for dinner. And I need to bring this person back for a po’boy.

Soda drinks tied to low bone density Dear Doctor: I was informed several years ago that carbonated drinks weaken bones, leaching the calcium from them. Is this true? What would be considered an acceptable amount for a teenager or a woman past menopause? Would carbonated spring water be better?

Dear Reader: Sodas are ubiquitous in our society. Even schools sell them. Further, both parents and children often use sodas as their primary source of liquids, shunning simple water – the essence of life. The evidence between soda intake and obesity risk is irrefutable. Now let’s look at the evidence on bone density.

Almost 20 years ago, a study published in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research found that cola-drinking rats had lower levels of calcium, higher levels of phosphorus, lower levels of vitamin D and higher levels of parathyroid hormone than water-drinking rats. They also had lower bone density in the femur (hip) bone.

A 2006 study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition assessed the amount of cola and non-cola carbonated beverages, both with and without sugar, consumed by 1,125 men and 1,413 women.

The study followed participants for 25 years and then checked their bone mineral densities. The authors did not find an association between non-cola carbonated beverages and lower bone mineral density in either men or women. Nor did they find an association between cola consumption and lower bone density in men. However, women who drank cola sodas had significantly lower bone mineral density than those who didn’t drink sodas, regardless of whether the sodas contained sugar or artificial sweeteners.

Another American Journal of Clinical Nutrition study published in 2014 followed more than 73,000 women between the ages of 30 and 55 for 30 years. At the end of the study, they

The authors then compared women with the same body mass index who drank soda versus those who didn’t. Here the authors found a significant correlation between soda intake and hip fractures. Women who drank five to 10 sodas a week had a 16 percent increased risk of hip fractures, and women who drank more than 10 sodas a week had a 42 percent increased risk of hip fractures.

The increased rates of hip fracture were seen in both caffeinated and non-caffeinated sodas, as well as colas and non-colas.

Carbonated spring water is simply water with dissolved carbon dioxide gas, but that’s not to say it isn’t acidic. The pH level is between 3 and 4 – higher than sodas’ roughly 2.5 pH – while water has a pH of 7. The acidity could potentially pose a problem, but a study published in the British Medical Journal in 2005 found no difference in markers for bone turnover between postmenopausal women who drank carbonated mineral water for eight weeks and postmenopausal women who drank plain mineral water.

My advice is: Make plain water your primary source of fluid. Also, and this is important, minimize the amount of sodas you and your teenager drink. In addition to their link to obesity, they do seem to increase the risk of low bone density and bone fractures.

Dear Abby: I’ve DEAR ABBY been married to my second Jeanne husband for 14 Phillips years. He’s a great provider, but mentally and emotionally abusive.

I want to leave him, but I’m scared to live on my own. We both work, but he makes a lot of money – which I do not – so I guess you can say, financially, I’m comfortable. But I’m miserable.

I’m so unhappy I have tried to take my life.

He wanted us to be swingers and I finally gave in, and now it’s all I hear about. I don’t want to do it, but he doesn’t care what I want. His kids are mean and disrespectful. We have no kids together (which I want but can’t have, and he won’t adopt). I feel like I’m wasting my life. I’m 43. I had to have emergency surgery and almost didn’t make it, and he resented me for it. Why can’t I leave him? Why am I so scared? I have no other family. – Wasting Away in the South Dear Wasting Away: You said it yourself: You are scared to live on your own. Some people are afraid of the unknown, and you appear to be one of them. In some bridge deals, if declarer gets one unlucky break, it might be mitigated by a lucky lie in another suit -- as in this deal. How did South play in four spades after West led the heart king?

First, I like North’s opening. Although he had the minors, the suits had good “impletion,” and North had no rebid problem. Then, after West’s two-heart intervention and North’s pass, South balanced with a takeout double. North continued with three clubs, South bid three spades and North raised.

If trumps were 3-1, South had only three losers: one spade, one heart and one club. So he wondered about a 4-0 split. Then he would need to establish a quick diamond trick on which to discard his heart loser. But even if he got lucky in diamonds, he would require a dummy entry.

Declarer cashed his spade ace at trick two, getting the bad news. Then he led the diamond queen, planning to run it. However, when West covered with the king, South won with dummy’s ace and continued with the diamond 10. If East had played low, declarer would have pitched the heart four. After East played the jack, though, South ruffed, crossed to the spade king and threw the heart four on the diamond nine. Then declarer claimed his contract, conceding two spades and one club.
