fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Joliet West High School student spoke to the Board of Education on Tuesday about an incident last November where she allegedly was “racially attacked” by a teacher. During public comment, sophomore Marsela Rosales said she was in complete shock when she heard the teacher’s “racial remark,” saying she felt like she couldn’t defend herself.

“I felt frightened and intimidated,” she said.

Erika Diaz, her mother, said to district officials that based on the information she compiled, it appeared the teacher is a repeat offender for “inappropriate and unprofessional behavior.”

“I am here today because I believe it is imperative that the district is made aware that any comment suggestive of race or ethnicity made by an educator is inexcusable and must not be tolerated,” Diaz said.

Murder suspect mistakenly released from Stateville

bstanley@shawmedia.com CREST HILL – Police are seeking a Cook County murder suspect who was mistakenly released last week from Stateville Correctional Center.

On Thursday, Garrett Glover, 29, was sentenced to four years in prison for attempted armed robbery in Cook County. He was sent Garrett Friday to the Northern ReGlover ception and Classification Center at Stateville. But since Glover had already served more than half his sentence in jail – enough that he would typically be eligible for parole – since his Sept. 14, 2014, arrest, he was released after being processed.

the teacher was still working at West and why other teachers haven’t taken a stand for students, alleging the teacher has “racially attacked and bullied other kids at my school more than once.”

She did not receive a response except for Board President Jeff Pierson, who thanked her for her comments.

“It takes a lot of courage,” Pierson said.

After the meeting, Superintendent Cheryl McCarthy said the district has been actively involved in the investigation of the incident. She said the investigation happened immediately but that the district’s uniform grievance procedure takes time, as there is a hearing conducted and gathering of information from a variety of sources.

McCarthy declined to comment on Rosales’ and Diaz’s comments.

Diaz said to the board that the district is ill-prepared and deficient in resources when it comes to cultural awareness and sensitivity but she is hopeful.

documentation or information from Cook County indicating he should have been held beyond his ... release date,” Department of Corrections spokeswoman Nicole Wilson said. “The department had no authority to hold him and was required, by law, to release him.”

But, according to the Cook County Sheriff’s Office, Glover should have been sent back to jail. In 2015, he was charged with murder in connection with a Sept. 5, 2012, shooting on Interstate 94.

The sheriff’s office was informed Monday of Glover’s release.

“The manhunt for Glover has continued aggressively through the night and will continue until he is apprehended,” according to a statement issued Tuesday by the sheriff’s office.

After the meeting, some board members and McCarthy spoke with Rosales’ family.

Diversity issues have been in the spotlight at the district before. District officials have begun pursuing initiatives under a new strategy to address culturally responsive education and staff diversity after residents raised concerns over the latter to the district last year.

Action plans were developed under the new strategy that was developed through the district’s strategic planning process.

The board approved in January hiring MulticultuReal Communications to provide professional development for implicit bias training at the cost of $10,500.

Inmate dies on Stateville bus

mmallory@shawmedia.com CREST HILL – A 49-year-old Chicago resident died Monday morning after being found on an inmate transport bus at Stateville Correctional Center.

Clifford V. Nelson was being transferred from the Cook County Jail in Chicago to Stateville in Crest Hill when he was discovered unresponsive on the bus at 9:50 a.m.

He was taken to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, where he was pronounced dead in the emergency room at 10:53 a.m.

According to an initial autopsy performed Tuesday, there were no signs of foul play. Illinois State Police is investigating the death.

According to the Illinois Department of Corrections, Nelson was in prison for a charge of retail theft.

Early 2017 projections indicate the county is on pace for more than 100 heroin or opioid-related overdose deaths in 2017, according to the Will County coroner.

Note to readers: This is the fourth installment of a four-day series examining the cause of Will County’s record number of heroin-related deaths in 2016 and efforts to quell the epidemic.

JOLIET – Between 1999 and 2008, an average of 11 people a year died in Will County from heroin-related overdoses.

But this January alone, there were nine heroin or opioid-related overdose deaths in the county. And according to the Will County Coroner’s Office, the county is on pace for 108 such deaths in 2017.

The argument could be made that because the county’s population has grown by about 200,000 since 1999, a jump in deaths should have been anticipated.

But nothing like this.

Especially considering the population growth has leveled off since 2009 – the same year Will County saw what was, at the time, its sharpest increase in heroin-related overdose deaths.

That year, 29 people overdosed on heroin – in some instances mixed with other drugs – and died.

In 2016, 77 people died in the county as a result of a heroin-related overdose. It’s a new record no one is proud of, but it’s also not a total shock. The county’s heroin-related death record has been broken several times in the past decade.

In 2011, 30 people died of heroin-related overdoses. In 2012, the number was 53. In 2013, it was 38; in 2014, it was 35; and in 2015, it jumped to 53 again.

County officials are more committed than ever to saving lives and getting death totals down. But they’ve been trying for years.

When they saw the spike in deaths, they tried to address it at a federal

It turns out it wasn’t.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, opioids, including prescription opioids and heroin, killed more than 33,000 people in 2015 – more than any year on record. Nearly half of all opioid overdose deaths involve a prescription opioid.

In 2015, opioids killed more people than gun violence and car crashes, locally and nationally.

The increase in deaths is connected to an increase in addictions. Opiates such as heroin are highly addictive, and experts attribute much of the

growth to the over-prescription of pain pills by doctors.

“Pharmaceutical companies told doctors they weren’t addictive,” said Dr. Kathleen Burke, who was hired in February by Will County as its director of substance abuse initiatives. “Doctors were uninformed and over-prescribing and contributing to the problem.”

Burke has been training first responders to use the nasal spray naloxone to save lives when they arrive at the scene of an overdose. But her role is now expanding with the help of the Illinois Prevent Prescription Drug/Opioid Overdose-related Deaths

Uniform Grant, which will supply the county with $122,500 a year for five years to expand its drug abuse and addiction-related programs.

In her role, Burke will work to get naloxone into the hands of as many people as possible – from jail workers to family members of addicts – in hopes of saving more lives.

She also will anchor the county’s prevention efforts. Burke previously worked at the Robert Crown Center for Health Education, where she started to see the spike in heroin-related deaths.

Night of severe weather hits region

A meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Romeoville said at 7 p.m. that definitive rain totals wouldn’t be available until Wednesday morning, but that there were reports of hail in the Joliet area and some wind damage reported in Crest Hill.

According to spotter reports on the National Weather Service website, there were 5 inches of flowing water near Pilcher Park in Joliet, in an area that normally floods. Twelve inches of standing water were reported at Route 30 and Briggs Street in New Lenox. On South Lily Cache Road in Plainfield, 1.25-inch hail was reported. At Larkin Avenue and Black Road in Joliet, 1-inch hail was reported.

Plainfield District 202 board approves new facility rental schedule

fsarver@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – The Plainfield District 202 board approved a new rental fee schedule for its 29 academic buildings. The district rents its buildings for use by groups such as the park districts, youth organizations and performing arts groups. The fee schedule approved by the board Monday will apply to 17 elementary schools, seven middle schools, the four high schools and Plainfield Academy.

The hourly rental rates for organizations that wish to use spaces inside and outside the buildings are determined by a classification system and a sixth classification was added to the schedule.

“These changes clarify a lot of the questions that have come up over the years, and makes it easier for us to administer the system and hopefully for the community to use our buildings,” stated Tom Hernandez, district spokesman, in an email.

He stated district officials first created the facility use fee structure in the

2010-11 school year when they added the School Dude online scheduling system. No major changes were made since then.

The district also charges fees for use of district staff, equipment and rooms.

Class I and Class II organizations are charged no fees for rental use while Class V and VI organizations are charged the highest in fees.

A new fee in the schedule is for use of the turf fields at the high school.

Class III, IV, V and VI are required to pay an hourly rate of $250, $300, $400 and $600, respectively.

In some cases, the fees are either higher or lower. The hourly fee for the high schools’ main gyms for Class III, Class IV, Class V and Class VI organizations is $25, $40, $80 and $120, respectively.

The fee was previously lower for Class III at $5 on weekdays or $10 for weekends and holidays. The fees for Class IV and Class V organizations were higher.

Class I and Class II are defined by the district as nonprofit, school-related and service-related organizations and

groups that are closely related to the schools or directly serve the students.

Class III and Class IV categories were redefined under the new schedule. Both are now defined as nonprofit organizations whose academic or recreational activities directly serve the students.

The YMCA and park district is still Class III, but youth organizations such as community sports leagues, Boys & Girls Clubs, national or state athletic groups are now Class IV. Class V organizations are all nonprofit organizations not covered under the previous categories and include the new addition of homeowners associations. Other organizations that are Class V include political organizations, churches and religious groups.

Class VI covers commercial and for-profit individuals, organizations or groups.

The fee schedule no longer has a separate fee for weekdays and one that covers both weekends and holidays.

Organizations under Class II were required to pay a fee for weekend and holidays.

Despite several tornado and thunderstorm warnings Tuesday night, as of press time there were no confirmed tornadoes in Grundy County.

A spokesperson from the National Weather Service in Romeoville said the only confirmed tornado was in Ottawa, despite reported sightings in and near Marseilles, Seneca, and Naplate.

A tornado watch was in effect for both Will and Grundy counties until 10 p.m. Tuesday.

Morris Fire Protection and Ambulance District Chief Tracey Steffes said he witnessed a tornado on the ground 1 mile east of the Marseilles exit between Interstate 80 and Route 6.

“It caused some damage there in LaSalle County and then jumped north at the Seneca exit and dissipated,” he said.

Steffes said no major damage was reported Tuesday night in Grundy County.

Election results: Homer Township Republican primary The HERALD–NEWS While the majority of local elections won’t take place until April 4, the Homer Township consolidated Republican primary races were held Tuesday.

Pam Meyers beat out Vicki Bozen for Homer Township supervisor, receiving 829 votes to Bozen’s 548, according to unofficial results on the Will County clerk’s website.

Linsey L. Sowa took 809 votes for township clerk, winning out over Cindy Kedzierski’s 554.

For highway commissioner, Mike DeVivo defeated Bob LePretre. DeVivo received 797 votes, and LePretre got 576.

John Kruczek, Edward L. Kalas, Tom Fijan and George Offord got enough votes to win the race’s four trustee seats with 800, 762, 712 and 664, respectively. Ann Crane, Debra Poczatko, Brent Porfilio and Amber Morrison did not.

Paczki Day: A new tradition for some, paczki for all More online

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Donut Den on Tuesday provided testimony to the growing tradition of Paczki Day. People of Polish heritage and people of Wheaton heritage alike gathered to get some of the 12,000 paczki that the Donut Den baked for Fat Tuesday.

Mary Amant of Joliet said she learned of paczki “through my Ukrainian friends.”

“I’m from Wheaton,” Amant said.

“We have our opinions, but now I know better.”

Paczki is not a pastry Amant grew up with. But the very doughy, very sugary and very rich Polish doughnut has become a favorite at her house today – almost dangerously so.

“If I didn’t come home and bring them paczki, my three kids would probably tie me up to a tree in the backyard and shoot me with a pellet gun,” she said.

It was after 11 a.m. – pretty late on Paczki Day – when Amant picked up her paczki.

“You should have been here earlier,” Donut Den owner Bruce Aronson said.

“They were lining up through the door for three hours this morning.”

By “earlier” Aronson meant 5 a.m.,

“The fryers have had paczki in them for 25 hours now,” Aronson said.

“The only question is, when do I shut it down?” he said. “When we start mixing the dough, it’s three hours before they come out of the fryer.”

batch of paczki shortly after 11 a.m.

The paczki business has been getting bigger since Aronson became owner of the Donut Den eight years ago.

“The first year I bought the business we made a thousand paczki, and today we’re going to make 12,000,” he said.

A thousand paczki were more than enough eight years ago. But the demand has grown each year.

Aronson had 328 paczki orders ahead

of Paczki Day. Paczki Day is a Polish tradition that started when lots of dough and butter that were not to be used during the leaner Lenten period of fasting were used up before Ash Wednesday to make the richer-than-usual pastries.

“It’s been a tradition for us,” said Ray Bibzak of Mokena, one of the customers at the Donut Den and of Polish heritage.

My grandmother made them, too,” Bibzak said.

Now he buys them at bakeries, admitting that the passing of the tradition only went so far.

“The eating of the paczki did. The making of them did not,” Bibzak said.

“I don’t think I’ve ever made a paczki in my life.”

For many, like Amant, Paczki Day has become a new family tradition, and she can’t get enough of it.

“It would be nice,” she said, “if we could do it more often in the year.”

Mayor to hold forum on possible property tax freeze

Baldermann announced that he will hold a public forum with representatives of all local school districts at 6:30 p.m. March 21 at the auditorium of Lincoln-Way Central High School, 1801 E. Lincoln Highway in New Lenox, to discuss how a possible state-mandated property tax freeze would affect village and school services.

A recent trip to Springfield made clear to him that state representatives “on both sides of the aisle” will push for a property tax freeze as part of a budget deal, Baldermann said. Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and the Democrats that hold the majority in the Illinois General Assembly have been in a budget stalemate since July 2015.

Baldermann said that while a property tax freeze will not help the state get out of an $11 billion deficit, “it could have a detrimental effect on our services and the schools’ services.” He called the proposal “smoke and mirrors” to keep constituents happy since a new service tax and an increase on income taxes have also been proposed.

If the proposal is realized, Baldermann said, the village’s seven-year policy to rebate part of the village’s portion of New Lenox residents’ property tax bills will have to end. Last fall the village approved a 75 percent rebate on property taxes paid to the village in 2016. Those checks will go out in March to residents who applied for the rebate.

NEW LENOX – A proposal from New Lenox’s Providence Catholic High School to turn a parking lot at one of its athletic fields into a depot for its school buses has been withdrawn because of continued opposition by residents.

The request to allow the school to use its property on Ferro Drive and Gougar Road as a transportation hub for parking and fueling school buses was to be voted on by the village board Monday night, but it was informally withdrawn by the president of the school, the Rev. Richard McGrath, after some trustees indicated their opposition. Trustees David Smith and David Butterfield indicated that they would not vote for the proposal by recommending that the school instead use the parking lot at its athletic field on Route 30 and Gougar Road.

Mayor Tim Baldermann said the village valued the school as a good neighbor but the board, as an entity that represents the residents, would also have to take the “well-thought-out concerns the residents have and some trustees concur with” into consideration.

At the meeting, McGrath asked the village for a postponement on the measure after Baldermann explained that once the proposal for the depot was denied, the school would not be able to bring a similar proposal to the village for the same property for a year.

In a later interview, however, McGrath said that the school would give up on the current proposal and work with the village to look for another location for the transportation hub.

“We were disappointed that the ordinance would not have passed … but we will work with the village to pursue other avenues,” he said.

Todd Hyatt and Drew Weems, residents of the Cherry Hill Meadows subdivision adjacent to the property, spoke for more than 30 residents present at the meeting. Hyatt read from a

list of concerns he handed out to trustees, including health risks from fumes and possible spillage from the proposed above-ground fuel tank, increased traffic congestion and noise at a busy intersection, and a possible negative effect on property values.

“We would like nothing more than to help Providence [find a solution for its buses] but we don’t want [16] yellow buses parked there,” Weems said after the meeting.

Park district makes progress on Pilcher Park Pilcher Park improvements

The Joliet Park District has improved trails and built bridges. There is more to come.

“We’re done with phase one,” park district Executive Director Tom Carstens said.

In the spring and summer, the park district will pave roads, improve more trails and add security gates.

Security cameras are being added at the nature center and front entrance. Parking lots are being repaved.

The park district is spending $2.4 million on Pilcher Park improvements, which are among the projects that were included in the $19.5 million bond referendum approved in 2014.

Carstens said people have noticed.

“There are so many compliments from the neighbors and Pilcher Park users,” he said.

Pilcher Park at 640 acres is Joliet’s biggest park and one of its oldest.

On Monday, the park board approved security cameras for the nature center, horticultural center and greenhouse.

The board also approved security cameras elsewhere – at the Hartman Recreation Center and Woodruff Golf Course. The cameras are part of a broad plan to improve security at park facilities.

And sometimes, it’s the babies who suffer.

Will County Board member Laurie Summers has worked in neonatal intensive care units. It’s where the prevalence of opioid addiction first came to her attention years ago.

“Newborns, infants, addicted [to painkillers],” Summers said. “For babies, it can take up to three months to ween them off the drugs. Now it’s happening more frequently.”

Senior citizens also are dying from heroin and opioid addictions.

Before her current job at a retirement community, Summers was a home health nurse.

“The addiction to prescription opioids is rapid, and that’s the first thing

“Then you have family members taking the [leftover drugs] and using them or selling them on the street,” she said.

“Once that dries up, people find heroin, which is cheaper.”

Summers said her son-in-law lost a brother to an opioid-related overdose.

She said getting the grant is “awesome,” and she commended the county for looking at the issue the right way.

“I’m glad we’re doing early intervention. It’s much less costly than trying to reach the addict,” Summers said.

She said doctors have to be educated about over-prescription, and “Big Pharma” companies “need to get it together.”

Burke wants there to be a focus on the underlying mental illness that makes certain people prone to addiction, rather than blaming them.

JOLIET – Minors were able to buy tobacco products at 13 Joliet businesses Monday, police said.

Between 5 and 7 p.m. detectives worked with teenage volunteers who tried to buy cigarettes.

“We run these checks regularly throughout the year to remind not only our retailers, but also underage citizens that we take tobacco sales seriously,” Joliet Chief of Police Brian Benton said.

Since 2012, the city has issued licenses for tobacco retailers, and it can stop or suspend sales for businesses that sell to minors.

AURORA – An Aurora man was arrested Monday after planning to meet young boys for sex.

But Andrew D. Stewart, 29, was actually communicating with Will County Sheriff’s Office detectives before he was arrested on charges of Andrew indecent solicitation of D. Stewart a child and traveling to meet a minor, sheriff’s office spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer said.

Stewart came to investigators’ attention about a month ago after making contact online during an ongoing investigation, Hoffmeyer said.

On Monday, he went to a meeting in Will County expecting to encounter two boys who were younger than 13.

Hoffmeyer said that when Stewart was taken into custody, he was carrying two condoms and cellphones that contained videos of pornographic images of children.

Hoffmeyer said Stewart told detectives of his intentions to have sex with

children.

“He advised, if the police did not stop him, he would have had sex and sexual acts with minors,” she said.

OBITUARIES JAMES R. BARHAM James R. “JIMBOB” Barham, age 52, passed suddenly Thursday, February 23, 2017.

JimBob is survived by his parents, James C. and Shirley (Vetter) Barham of Louisville, IL; daughter, Madisen Rock of South Carolina; brother, Danny (Vicky) Barham of Joliet; sisters, Lori (Carl) Barham of Louisville, Kelli (Bob) Isberg of Braidwood and Shannon Graham of Bible Grove, IL; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and lifelong friends.

Preceded in death by his brother, Terry Barham.

JimBob was born and lived his life in Joliet “RIDGEWOOD” IL. His passion was spending time with his daughter, Madisen, whom he loved dearly. He always kept his family and friends near and dear as he was a big-hearted guy. JimBob also enjoyed truck driving like his dad, and had the opportunity to experience the open road and the amazing mountain views.

He has also been a member of Belmont A.C. for several years.

She was born in Joliet on July 18, 1948 and was a lifelong resident.

Mary Lou made a living by helping the community while working as an employment security program rep., with the IDES for more than 40 years. Mary Lou was very loved by all of her nieces, nephews, the entire family and friends.

Born in Crest Hill, Illinois her life consisted of hard work and devotion to family and friends. She will be remembered for her contagious smile, always positive attitude and willingness to help others.

While raising her family Rose completed school and opened a beauty shop in her home, where she worked for over 50 years before retiring in her 80s. Many of her clients remain friends to this day. After the early death of her first husband, Rose remarried and shared eleven loving years with Joe. Rose is survived by her husband Carl “Joe” Guardia; sons, David Kambic (Carl Mandenberg), Carl (Barbara) Guardia and Dennis (Patti) Guardia; daughter-in-law, Karen Kambic Sinnot; nine grandchildren, Zachary (Susan) Kambic, Jennifer (Jason) Kojro-Badziak, Lucas Kambic, Laura (Scott) Thornton, Geri Guardia, Carl (Elizabeth) Guardia, Valerie Guardia (Holly Hayes), Erin Guardia and Andy (Joy) Guardia; and 11 great-grandchildren. WAYNE E. GUSTAFSON Wayne E. Gustafson “Gus,” age 81, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 27, 2017 at Presence St. Joseph’s Medical Center.

Born and raised in Joliet and has resided in Shorewood the past 40 years. He was a 1953 graduate of JTHS and a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy Seabees Construction Battalion.

He retired as a carpenter with Union Local 174 in 1992.

Wayne was an active member and usher at Holy Family Catholic Church for over 30 years.

He was also a member of the Moran AC, Joliet Moose Lodge # 300 and he enjoyed playing euchre at the Elks Club. The family will remember with the fondest of memories walleye fishing trips in Minnesota and how Wayne enjoyed sharing his garden with family and neighbors.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Eric and Elizabeth Gustafson; his son-in-law, Greg Menozzi.

Wayne is survived by the love of his life of 58 years, Anna Mae (nee Minarich) Gustafson, who he actually met in the 3rd grade. He was the dearest Dad to his four children, his daughter, Victoria (late, Greg) Menozzi; his sons, Mark (Donna), Scott (Amy) and Kevin (Diana) Gustafson. He was a devoted grandpa to his eight grandchildren, Matthew and Leanna Menozzi; Eric, Audrey, Grant, Joshua, Jacob and Mitchell Gustafson. He is the brother of Joyce (Bruce) Tompkins and brother-in-law of Robert (Marlene) Minarich; numerous nieces and nephews also survive. Patricia Ann Frieders (nee Midlock), age 80, a longtime resident of Plainfield, IL, passed away peacefully on February 27, 2017 at the Joliet Area Community Hospice Home. She was born on September 23, 1936 in Joliet, IL. Patricia is survived by her loving husband, Joseph J. Frieders; her 3 children, Andrew(Darcia Van Deusen) Frieders of Cary, NC, Daniel (Gabrielle Garrett) Frieders of Kankakee, IL, and Julie (James) Lockhart of Joliet, IL; her 4 grandchildren, Kathryn Lockhart, Timothy Lockhart, Alexander Frieders, and Elleanor Frieders; her sister, Anita (John) Green of Plainfield, IL; and brother, Eugene (Penelope) Midlock of Los Altos, CA; fond aunt of many.

After marrying Joseph in 1966, she devoted most of her time to bookkeeping for Frieders Trucking Inc. and raising her loving children. Later she enjoyed a fulfilling career as a Kohl’s sales associate and manager. Pat’s favorite interests included cruising, playing the slots, playing Yahtzee, and spoiling her grandkids.

Senate makes progress on Rauner’s ‘grand bargain’

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Senate has moved forward on pieces of a budget compromise. But the tough votes are scheduled for Wednesday.

The Senate approved noncontentious parts of what’s called the “grand bargain” on Tuesday. It’s an effort to find a breakthrough on a two-year stalemate between Gov. Bruce Rauner and the Legislature.

The Republican governor won’t agree to a tax increase to tackle a multibillion-dollar deficit without regulatory changes to strengthen business and weaken unions.

Democrats control the Senate and provided most of the votes Tuesday to approve plans to streamline state purchasing, expand casino gambling and more.

But Senate President John Cullerton’s pension overhaul failed. He said he’ll tweak that measure for a revote and is confident that votes Wednesday on an income tax increase and a local property tax freeze will prevail.

Emergency operations activated as tornadoes hit

OTTAWA – Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner activated the state’s emergency operations center as local officials reported damage from tornadoes spawned by a late-winter storm system.

Officials said activation of the State Emergency Operations Center will ensure state agencies are in place to give assistance to those affected by Tuesday’s storms.

A twister hit the LaSalle County Nursing Home in Ottawa in central Illinois. State Emergency Management Agency spokeswoman Patti Thompson said one person was killed by an uprooted tree. Minor injuries also were reported at the nursing home, but Thompson said the number of those hurt in the twisters was not known.

WILLIAM C. KECK William C. Keck “Bill,” age 89, passed away Saturday, February 25, 2017 at his late residence surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Chicago, the son of the late William D. and Alta (Cryderman) Keck. He was raised in New Lenox where he attended New Haven Grade School. Residing in Joliet most of his life. Graduate of Joliet Central High School class of 1945. During high school he worked for WCLS Radio as an announcer. A W.W.II U.S. Army Veteran, proud member of the 11th Airborne Paratroopers. Bill worked many jobs to support his family, to name a few, he worked for the City of Joliet as a draftsman, George Reiter & Associates, Olin Chemical, Shep’s Gas Station, Mark Shale/Al Baskin and Rockwell International, where he retired from in 1992. Following retirement, Helen and Bill moved to Tucson, AZ where he did volunteer work at Tohono Chul Park and loved each day he was there, he was also a spotter for the LPGA. They returned home to Joliet in 2005 to spend time with family. A former usher at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Crest Hill.

An avid artist and golfer, proud member of the Joliet Artists League, The Pleiners Painters and American Legion Post #1080.

WASHINGTON – A federal judge said Tuesday that he’ll decide within a week whether to temporarily halt construction of the final section of the Dakota Access pipeline over claims that it violates the religious rights of two Indian tribes.

U.S. District Judge James Boasberg told lawyers at a hearing that he wants to issue a ruling before oil begins flowing in the pipeline, which could be weeks away.

Boasberg is considering a request by the Standing Rock and Cheyenne River Sioux tribes to order the Army Corps of Engineers to withdraw permission to lay pipe under Lake Oahe in North Dakota.

The pipeline has prompted months of protests and hundreds of arrests.

Russia, China veto new U.N. sanctions on Syria

UNITED NATIONS – Russia and China on Tuesday vetoed new U.N. sanctions on Syria, and the U.S. ambassador accused both countries of refusing to hold President Bashar Assad’s regime accountable for the use of chemical weapons.

“They put their friends in the Assad regime ahead of our global security,” new American envoy Nikki Haley told the U.N. Security Council after the vote. “They turned away from defenseless men, women and children who died gasping for breath when Assad’s forces dropped their

recently joined France and Britain in sponsoring the resolution, and Haley minced no words in denouncing the “outrageous and indefensible choice” that Russia and China made on Tuesday.

President Donald Trump had warm words for Russian President Vladimir Putin while campaigning, but Haley has now criticized Russia over its annexation of Ukraine’s Crimea peninsula as well as Syria.

Trump signs executive order on black colleges

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump signed an executive order Tuesday aimed at signaling his commitment to historically black colleges and universities, saying that those schools will be “an absolute priority for this White House.”

HBCU presidents are hoping Congress will bolster Trump’s actions to strengthen the schools with increased funding in the upcoming federal budget. They are calling for $25 billion for infrastructure, college readiness, financial aid and other priorities.

Under President Barack Obama’s administration, historically black colleges and universities received $4 billion over seven years.

“The next step is the budget. You cannot have mission without money,” Thurgood Marshall College Fund President Johnny Taylor said after the signing ceremony.

Trump: ‘Time to join forces’ to fix America

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Heralding a “new chapter of American greatness,” President Donald Trump issued a broad call for overhauling the nation’s health care system and significantly boosting military spending Tuesday night, swapping his trademark pugnaciousness and personal insults for a more restrained tone as he addressed Congress for the first time.

In an appeal to American optimism, Trump declared, “The time for small thinking is over.” Still, he employed dark language to describe the threat posed by “radical Islamic terrorism” – a term his own national security adviser rejects as inflammatory – and warned against “reckless” and “uncontrolled entry” of refugees and immigrants from countries with ties to extremist groups.

In an hourlong address, Trump defended his early actions in office and ignored the missteps that have set even his allies in Washington on edge.

He outlined a populist agenda centered on promises to compel companies to bring manufacturing jobs back to the U.S. He was unusually measured and embraced the pomp and tradition of a presidential address to Congress.

The president was greeted by enthusiastic applause as he entered the House chamber, although it was filled with Democrats who vigorously oppose his policies and many Republicans who never expected him to be elected. Most Republican lawmakers have rallied around him since the election, hopeful that he will act on the domestic priorities they saw blocked during President Barack Obama’s eight years in office.

Topping that list is undoing Obama’s signature health care law and replacing the sweeping measure. Trump offered a basic blueprint of his priorities, including ensuring that those with pre-ex-

He suggested he would get rid of the current law’s requirement that all Americans carry insurance coverage, saying that “mandating every American to buy government-approved health insurance was never the right solution for America.”

Making a direct appeal for bipartisanship, Trump turned to Democrats and said, “Why not join forces to finally get the job done and get it done right?”

Democrats, now firmly ensconced in the minority, sat silently while Republicans stood and cheered. Some wore blue, pro-health care buttons that read “Protect our care,” and dozens of Democratic women wore white in honor of the suffrage movement.

Former Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear took a populist tenor in Democrats’ formal response after the speech, accusing Trump of planning to “rip affordable health insurance” from Americans and being “Wall Street’s champion.”

Trump was vague in his call for tax reform, another Republican priority. He promised “massive tax relief for the mid-

dle class” and a reduction in corporate tax rates, but glossed over how he would offset the cuts.

The president also urged Congress to pass a $1 trillion infrastructure package financed through both public and private capital.

“The time has come for a new program of national rebuilding,” he said.

Trump sent unexpectedly mixed messages on immigration, one of his signature campaign issues. He pledged to vigorously target people living in the U.S. illegally who “threaten our communities and prey on our citizens.” But he told news anchors before his speech that he was open to legislation that could provide a pathway to legal status, and he told Congress he believed “real and positive immigration reform is possible.”

First lady Melania Trump sat with special guests who were on hand to amplify the president’s agenda, including the family members of people killed by immigrants living in the U.S. illegally. The widow of former Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia also sat alongside Mrs. Trump, a reminder of the president’s well-received nomination of federal appeals court Judge Neil Gorsuch to fill Scalia’s seat.

‘What are they thinking?’

SPRINGFIELD – Last week, when I heard that members of state government’s largest union voted to authorize a strike, I just shook my head and wondered, “What are they thinking?”

Many state workers view this as necessary saber rattling so their union bosses can continue to pressure the governor.

Good luck on that. I don’t see Gov. Bruce Rauner bending one iota.

Here is what his administration had to say when the AFSCME vote numbers were revealed: “The vote to authorize a strike is an attack on our state’s hardworking taxpayers and all those who rely on critical services provided every day. It is a direct result of AFSCME leadership’s ongoing misinformation campaign about our proposal.”

Politicians are prone to hyperbole.

But in this case, not so much.

One of the issues is when AFSCME workers should be able to collect overtime pay.

Right now, they only have to work 37 and one half hours before they can start collecting time and half pay.

Most private-sector workers can’t get overtime until they have worked 40 hours.

The great national labor leader John L. Lewis once was asked what organized labor wanted. He response was telling: “more.” Lewis is buried on Springfield’s north side but his spirit lives on in the American labor movement.

Here’s the problem with the current labor negotiations with the state of Illinois: There isn’t “more” to give.

Our state is broke. We have a backlog of unpaid bills that is expected to be $15 billion

by July. State pensions are underfunded to the tune of $120 billion. And our state’s credit rating is the worst of any state.

Our bonds could be downgraded to “junk” status.

There are a lot of places to place the blame for the state’s nasty fiscal predicament.

VIEWS Scott Reeder But perhaps the most obvious place to put it is Springfield’s culture of acquiescence.

For decades, Republicans and Democrats alike have given into union demands and promised more than the state could afford.

And usually those promised benefits would be paid for when some future politician was in office. We are talking about things like pensions.

State workers have far more generous pension and health insurance benefits than most of the Illinois taxpayers who are paying not only for those benefits but for their own.

Because the state is broke, the governor is asking for concessions from workers.

Nobody likes to see their benefits cut.

At a newspaper chain I once worked for, when advertising revenue went south, I saw my employer’s contribution to my 401(k) disappear and my health insurance premiums go up.

I wasn’t happy about those things. But I understood those sacrifices were necessary in order for my employer to stay in business. My experience is hardly unique. Many folks who have worked in the private sector have had similar experiences.

But there appears to be an aversion to sacrifice on the part of the leaders of AFSCME. Would it be asking too much for state employees to work a 40-hour workweek and pay more for their insurance premiums – like most folks outside of government do?

I don’t think so. And neither do most Illinoisans.

Joliet is not a sanctuary city.

Really! Verdad!

And the new P.C. term for illegals is Dreamers.

The only dream most of these people have is to turn the tables and get over on the system.

How compassionate and charitable do you think these illegal dreamers would be if their dreams came true?

The main reason most people go to downtown Joliet is because they had the misfortune to get caught in Will County’s incompetent corrupt court system.

The only people who frequent downtown Joliet are AKA repeat offenders.

To the Editor: I recently (Feb. 18) had the pleasure to attend the entertaining and highly competitive varsity boys basketball game between two excellent teams: the Joliet West Tigers and Joliet Central Steelmen.

A huge capacity crowd was treated to an epic high school sports contest that was not decided until the final buzzer sounded. Both teams demonstrated their incredible athletic skills with great integrity, class and sportsmanship.

Congrats to the Tigers and Steelmen squads, and good luck in the postseason.

Saint Xavier runs away from USF in CCAC Tournament title game

dgoss@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The University of St. Francis women were bound and determined to get back in the game after trailing Saint Xavier, 38-28, at halftime of Tuesday night’s Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament championship game at the Sullivan Center.

But the Cougars were not about to let it happen.

In one of the wildest third quarters a championship game can produce, Saint Xavier outscored St. Francis, 27-26, to increase its lead to 65-54, and Cougars went on to spoil the Saints’ undefeated season, 88-64.

“They have so many good scorers,” said USF coach Samantha Quigley-Smith, who was announced as the CCAC Coach of the Year after the game. “They put four or five girls in double figures, like we usually do.

“They did a great job getting the ball inside to [Brittany] Collins. She really killed us. That opened up the outside, and they knocked down their shots.”

Collins scored 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. CCAC Player of the Year Kara Krolicki, a junior guard from Lincoln-Way East, scored 18 of her 22 points in the second half, when she knocked down 4 of 5 from 3-point range.

After St. Francis scored the first point of the third quarter on a Kamari Jordan free throw, Krolicki scored eight points in a 50-second span where USF did not get the ball across the center line.

The Saints (31-1) did battle back within 11 points after three quarters,

“This couldn’t have been sweeter,” Krolicki said. “They are a phenomenal team offensively and defensively. We knew what happened last time [an 80-70 USF win Jan. 7 at Saint Xavier], and we knew it would be tough in this environment. But from the second it tipped off, we really zoned in.”

crumbles,” said Reed, who hit 12 of 18 shots, 9 of 10 free throws and led the Saints with nine rebounds and five assists.

“We had our game plan, they had theirs, and they took it tonight,” Reed continued.

Reed, who averaged 16 points coming in, said she was not looking to score more often because the Saints were playing from behind virtually all the way. Instead, she was following orders.

“I do what coach tells me,” she said.

Terry ready to lead Plainfield East football

jstyf@shawmedia.com Terrance Terry has always known he wanted to be a coach, even when he was a player.

Now he will get his first shot at being a varsity head coach at Plainfield East after he was approved as the school’s next head football coach at Monday night’s District 202 school board meeting.

In high school at Barrington, he coached youth football.

In college at South Dakota, he coached at the team’s summer camp.

Then his fifth year there, he didn’t play and instead coached at Washington High School in Sioux Falls. For the past two seasons, Terry has been an English teacher and sophomore coach at Homewood-Flossmoor. He also has coached defensive backs on the varsity level at H-F. Now he’s set to begin what he called a “great opportunity at a young school” at Plainfield East, where he will be an English teacher.

“I’ve always been a fan of the big

picture,” Terry said. “A fan of building the program. Even when I was a player, I always took a vested interest in the program and the process.”

Terry noted he has learned a ton from his mentors, coaches such as Barrington’s Joe Sanchez, his high school coach.

“I want to provide an opportunity to help athletes feel the way they made me feel,” Terry said. “(Sanchez) just had such command of the situation at all times. He did everything in a manner that was really respectable. He just really, for me, embodied what I thought a high school football coach should be.”

Terry takes over a Plainfield East team that was 2-7 last fall from Mike Romeli, who had been in charge for seven years before stepping down for family reasons.

A dean at East, Romeli posted a 25-40 overall record, and his teams made the playoffs in 2013, when the Bengals finished 6-4, and 2014, when they were 7-3.

“Fans and community members are going to see a completely different brand of football,” Terry said. “Both

in the systems and the way we are going to teach. We plan to seek major improvements. We have to change the way we play the game.

“There were plenty of positives, but I think we have some work to do on the way we execute.”

Terry hasn’t met any of his new players yet, but said that he has watched film on all of the returning players. He will meet them at a team meeting on Friday.

For now, Terry said priority No. 1 was getting a staff in place, saying nothing was set yet on that.

But he does know he plans to change from an under center offense to the spread and he plans to change from an odd to even front on defense, something he described as “two major changes” from the past.

“I’m not going to come in and rip the paint off the walls,” Terry said.

“But I’m going to look at what is in place and see if it is effective.”

As far as his coaching philosophy, Terry plans to be hands-on with implementing the offensive and defensive changes and playcalling.

“Those things are dependent on who we have on the coaching staff, but as a coach, I’m extremely hands-on,” Terry said. “I will have a position that I coach. I will be out there working with them. That’s a big part of my success plan.

“Overall, I’m really excited about the opportunity. The biggest thing is the administration is extremely supportive and, from what I have heard, the community is too.”

“With all of the experience he has had, I thought he would be a good fit here,” East athletic director Tim Torkelson said. “We are excited to have him come in and make changes on both sides of the ball and even on special teams based on his own observations.

“We think he can build on the traditions we have, and I believe the changes he brings to the East football program will be positive for everyone involved.”

Torkelson said Terry was chosen from “a quality pool of online applicants and some on staff and a few in-district.”

“That quarter was back-and-forth,” Krolicki said. “It was like a shooting contest. I like the way our freshmen stepped up in the clutch and hit big shots.”

One of those freshman, Chanel Fanter, was 4 of 6 from 3-point range and scored 16 points. Senior Mikayla Leyden chipped in 19 for the Cougars.

Jordan finished with 14 points and Ekhomu with eight for the Saints. But remove Reed from the equation, and USF shot a mere tick over 30 percent on 12 of 39. Saint Xavier hit 33 of 63 for a .524 mark, and that included 13 of 28 from 3-point range, a .464 clip.

“We made some great shots, but when we did, all we were doing was trading baskets,” Quigley-Smith said.

“That wasn’t good enough. Nellie [Reed] was playing her butt off, but we couldn’t stop them from scoring. Every time we hit a big shot, they’d come back and hit one.”

A telling statistic was second-change points, as Saint Xavier had 18 to USF’s eight. The Cougars outrebounded the Saints, 38-26.

“We have to learn from every opportunity,” Quigley-Smith said. “We did not defend them well tonight. We have to learn from that.”

PLAINFIELD – While Lincoln-Way Central’s boys basketball team may have looked back to an early-season loss to Joliet West that went down to the wire as encouragement for them to pull an upset in Tuesday’s Class 4A Plainfield Central Regional semifinals rematch, circumstances that were beyond their control didn’t help those hopes.

The Knights were scheduled to leave New Lenox at 5:30 p.m. but due to the serious weather conditions in the Joliet-area, they didn’t even begin their trip to Plainfield until 7 p.m., which was the originally scheduled tipoff for the contest. All sides agreed to delay the start so as to not put the teams in harm’s way of the dangerous storms.

When the two squads finally took the court at 8:15 p.m., the well-rested Tigers pounced on the Knights and shot out to an early lead and a 37-11 halftime advantage before capturing a 71-42 victory.

West (24-3) advances to Friday’s 7 p.m. championship game against the winner of today’s semifinal game between Romeoville and Oswe-

go East.

“We had some really good practices,” Tigers coach Nick DiForti said. “Defensively, we’re very pleased with how we played. We knew that they’re a dangerous team that can light it up really fast. We definitely wanted to run them off of the 3, which I thought we did a fairly good job of doing that. And we also did a fairly good job of securing some rebounds, other than the first two or three minutes.”

The Tigers scored 11 of the game’s first 12 points and led 13-4 after one quarter with Trevian Bell (22 points) scoring six points and Teyvion Kirk (17 points) adding five points.

Central (10-18) didn’t make its initial basket until 38 seconds were left in the first quarter and it only added collected one field goal in the second period, when West broke things open by forcing nine turnovers to give the Knights 16 for the half.

West used a 12-0 spurt to turn a 18-6 cushion into a 3016 advantage. Bell got things started with a pair of 3-pointers while Kirk completed that run with three layups.

Balance the key for Joliet Central as they advance

That describes many teams coached

by Lawrence Thompson Jr. over the years, and his first edition of a Joliet Central squad is no exception.

The host Steelmen displayed those three traits in abundance in a 6953 dissection of Oswego in Tuesday night’s Class 4A regional semifinal.

With five players scoring 11, 11, 10, 10 and nine points, Central (22-5) got its scoring from across the court, and defended it similarly.

“We came focused,” Thompson said. “They made a couple of 3s, we made a couple of defensive adjust-

ments, and we did what we needed to do to get the lead out.”

Senior Jose Grubbs, the nine-point man, could hardly disagree.

“We’ve made some major strides, but have some stuff we can clean up,” Grubbs said. “Overall, we’re jelling really good. We’ve learned from a lot of mistakes we’ve made throughout the year.”

The trend became evident halfway through the first quarter, when Grubbs’ conventional three-point play broke a 6-all deadlock, helped take Oswego (10-18) out of its zone, and triggered a 12-point Steelmen splurge. It was 18-8 after a quarter, 34-18 at the break and 50-30, with Oswego ace Jaylen Jones held to 12 points, after 24 minutes. He would finish with 25 for the game and 1,000 for his career.

Grubbs was assigned to Jones, and took the assignment to heart.

“I definitely wanted to set the tone with him, let him know coming into Joliet Central, nothing was going to be easy,” Grubbs said. “You’ll have to work for everything you get. I wanted to set the tone and get my guys rolling.”

Thompson, having broken Oswego’s zone and having Grubbs clamp down on Jones, liked both the execution and the outcome.

“The two things we wanted to do, we got done in the first half,” Thompson said. “The rest of it, it’s fine and dandy. Jones can score, but we played good team defense when it mattered.

That’s the key to the whole thing.”

Thompson had seen improvement since taking over, but wants more.

“Defensively, we’re better at understanding situations,” Thompson said.

“Offensively, I think we’re better at situations, but are still not there yet.

Fundamentally, we’ve still got some guys who have some things that can be tweaked, but we share the ball and know where it needs to go.”

Subs Ryan Saunders and Marcellus Hornsby scored 11 each to lead the Steelmen, with JoJo McNair and Devonte Pitchford adding 10 each. The starters scored 31 of Joliet’s 69 points, showing both the depth of Thompson’s squad and the fact it was a runaway.

On Friday, the Steelmen play the winner of Wednesday’s semifinal between Lincoln-Way East (19-10) and Lockport (12-15), Thompson’s longtime bailiwick. East won last week’s matchup, 61-50.

Neuqua Valley size, defense end Minooka’s season

Shaw Media Correspondent PLAINFIELD – The fourth-seeded Minooka boys basketball team loaded the bus at just before 5 p.m.

Tuesday evening for the short trip to Plainfield North to play Neuqua Valley in the regional semifinal.

Then the storms came and after sitting at the school until their departure at 6:15, with a 40-minute later start time coupled with an outstanding Neuqua Valley man-to-man defense, it was not what the Indians were expecting as the 13th-seeded Wildcats ended Minooka’s season, 47-39.

Neuqua (15-15) will play for the regional title at 7 p.m. Friday against the winner of Wednesday night’s game between Andrew and West Aurora.

The Wildcats were led by Noah Herdman with 11 points and the inside presence of Alex Filo, Nathan Scott and Will Stankus, who combined for 20 points.

Entering the fourth quarter, Neuqua had allowed Minooka only two points inside the lane and the Wildcats hit a 3 to take a 3426 lead, but Jonny Butler finally hit a shot on a drive down the lane and converted the free throw to make it 34-29. Neuqua came right back with six consecutive points to make it 41-29 with 4:36 left. But the Indians’ Kyle Graebner hit two consecutive 3s to make it 41-35 with 3:49 remaining.

Then Butler hit two more baskets to get close at 43-39, but the Indians could not get any closer.

“It’s not the way we wanted it to end,” Butler said. “They played great defense and I did not have a very good

game. Nothing would fall tonight. It’s tough right now.”

Minooka (21-9) had a 23-21 lead early in the third quarter, but the height of the Wildcats took it to the Indians on the inside as they scored 10 consecutive points to take a 31-23 lead with 2:51 left in the third quarter.

The Indians’ Antonio Milazzo hit a 3 to end the third quarter trailing, 31-26. The only points for the Indians during the second and third quarters were four 3-pointers and two free throws. Neuqua only allowed two points inside the first three quarters.

The Wildcats led, 13-12, after the first quarter and then held Minooka to only eight points in the second quarter.

They played a very tough manto-man defense that denied Butler anything inside, as he only had one field goal in the first half to go along with two free throws. He ended with 11 points.

But four 3-pointers by four different Indians and their own tough defense gave them a 20-19 halftime lead.

Kyle Graebner ended the night with 11 points, and Milazzo chipped in nine. John Carnagio added five point and grabbed nine rebounds.

“I love our kids,” Minooka coach Scott Tanaka said. “They fought ’til the end. Neuqua played very good defensively, and we couldn’t get much to fall tonight. Not much else to say.”

Marco’s career ends as Raiders dominate the Warriors

Shaw Media correspondent ORLAND PARK – It was the beginning of a state-championship quest for Bolingbrook and the end of the season and career for Lincoln-Way West and its finest player.

Bolingbrook started fast and easily posted an 86-51 win over Lincoln-Way West during the first Class 4A boys basketball Sandburg Regional semifinal game Tuesday.

The win puts the top-seeded Raiders (25-1) in the regional championship against No. 9 Lemont (16-11) at 7 p.m. Friday.

It marked the end of a brilliant four-year career for senior Marco Pettinato, the Warriors’ all-time leading scorer.

“Watching those [seniors] grow up, teaching them life lessons, watching them carry themselves and all those kids are fantastic students and

people to be around,” Lincoln-Way West coach Brian Flaherty said.

“This has been the best four years of my life, and I’m thankful to all the people in the community,” Pettinato said. “We really improved over the last four years.”

Bolingbrook placed four players in double figures and nearly hit the 90-point mark with just one 3-pointer.

No. 17 Lincoln-Way West (9-18) had a four-game win streak snapped.

“We wanted to be as sharp as we can moving forward and for the most part we did that,” Bolingbrook coach Rob Brost said. “Now we have to move forward and prepare for the next game.”

“We haven’t seen a team with that kind of talent since last March 19,” Flaherty said of a 62-37 loss to Althoff Catholic in the 2016 Class 3A title game almost a year ago. “I think we came out thinking they were going to win the game and that impacted the

start of the game. They are incredibly good, but we gave them a lot of transition baskets tonight.”

Bolingbrook raced to leads of 8-0 and 12-3 during the opening minutes and was never threatened.

“Our pressure really hurt them, in general, especially early in the game,” Brost said. “We were able to generate some turnovers in the beginning of the game and at the start of the second half.”

“Once you get to that point, this is an incredibly tough team to come back on,” Flaherty said.

Bolingbrook led 49-26 at the half and 74-39 after three quarters. Malik Binns (18 points), Kaleb Thornton (14), Nana Akenten (12) and Brandon Lawani (10) led the Raiders.

“When we play together and share, we’re pretty good,” Brost said. “We’ve done a good job of sharing the ball all year and we did that tonight.”

“They have a lot of talent on that

team and they play hard,” Pettinato said. “They play hard, are wellcoached and those two things can take you a long way. I’m rooting for them now. We can say we lost to the state champs.”

Pettinato scored a game-high 19 points before heading to the bench midway through the fourth quarter.

“Marco is a really, really good player and he showed that tonight,” Brost said.

“He’s moving forward with another chapter in his life,” Flaherty said of the Lewis recruit. “He’s one of the most competitive people I know. If he chose professional darts as his sport, he’d be the best around at that. He’s going to be a great college player at Lewis.”

Lemont advanced by posting a 5135 win over No. 8 Sandburg (13-14) in the second semifinal Tuesday. P.J. Pipes led all scorers with 15 points for the Indians.

The Associated Press CHICAGO – Nikola Jokic had 19 points, 16 rebounds and 10 assists for his third triple-double of the season, and the Denver Nuggets rode a second-half surge to a 125-107 victory over the Bulls on Tuesday night.

Danilo Gallinari scored 22 points and Wilson Chandler added 20 as Denver, which entered the game fourth in the NBA in scoring (110.6 points a game), posted a 70-48 advantage in the second half to erase a halftime deficit.

Gary Harris and Will Barton had 15 points apiece for the Nuggets.

Dwyane Wade and Rajon Rondo had 19 points apiece for the Bulls, which had its four-game winning streak snapped. Jimmy Butler finished with just eight points on 3-for-13 shooting.

The Bulls had a 59-56 halftime lead before Denver busted out for a 35-point third quarter to take a 91-83 advantage into the fourth. The Nuggets were 11

of 20 from the field and 10 of 11 from the free-throw line in the third.

Denver carried the momentum into the final quarter, scoring the first eight points – capped by Gallinari’s two 3-pointers – for a 99-83 lead.

The margin was up to 21 points (110-89) a few minutes later and the rout was on.

Tip in: Bulls Coach Fred Hoiberg has two main objectives during the final six weeks of the regular season: win enough games to make the playoffs while taking a long look at some of the team’s young players, including newly acquired Cameron Payne and Joffrey Lauvergne. “We played 11 in the first half the other night (against Cleveland) and it’s tough to play that many guys,” Hoiberg said. “But at the same time, you do want to get a look at the new guys.”

In the conference men’s meet at Indianapolis, Lewis finished with 115 points to win its fourth straight GLVC title. Miranda won the 800 (1:52.73).

Devin Ingram Minooka was third in the 200 (22.37). Asher Scott claimed third in the mile (4:18.38) and Peyton Reed was third in the 3000 (8:40.01). The 4x400 relay of Ingram, John Partee (Plainfield South), Miranda and Chris Wilson (Minooka) was first (3:22.52).

No. 16 Purdue beats Indiana to clinch share of Big Ten crown The ASSOCIATED PRESS

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Dakota Mathias scored 17 of his 19 points in the first half and Caleb Swanigan added 17 of his 21 in the second Tuesday night to lead No. 16 Purdue past Indiana, 86-75, for a share of the Big Ten title.

The Boilermakers (24-6, 13-4) broke a tie with their rival by claiming a record 23rd conference championship.

James Blackmon Jr. scored 16 points for Indiana (16-14, 6-11), which has lost eight of 10.

The Hoosiers’ biggest problem – foul trouble.

After Indiana cut a 15-point deficit to four early in the second half, the Boilermakers went on a 10-2 run when Indiana’s top two centers both picked up their third foul.

The Hoosiers got as close as 57-51 with 10:07 left, but the Boilermakers answered with seven straight and pulled away.

Purdue has won seven of eight and has clinched the top seed in the Big Ten Tournament.

Vince Edwards had 15 points and Swanigan finished with 10 rebounds.

Indiana only led once, 17-14 midway through the first half.

Ohio State 71, Penn State 70: At State

College, Pennsylvania, Jae’Sean Tate sank a layup with three seconds left to lift Ohio State to a 71-70 win over Penn State on Tuesday.

Tate finished with 12 points and nine rebounds, Marc Loving added 14 and Trevor Thompson chipped in 11 for the Buckeyes (17-13, 7-10 Big Ten) who won on the road for just the fourth time this season.

Penn State took the lead on a Tony Carr 3-pointer with nine seconds to play but Tate ran the court and found room underneath to hit the winning basket.

Carr finished with 21, Shep Garner notched 20 points and Lamar Stevens added 16 for Penn State (14-16, 6-11), which lost its fourth straight.

The Buckeyes led for more than 25 minutes and were up 40-36 at halftime.

They surrendered the lead just under two minutes into the second half on a pair of Stevens free throws. They got it back on an Andre Wesson 3-pointer with 6:39 to play.

Meanwhile, Penn State’s offense went cold. The Nittany Lions went without a field goal for 4:29 of the final 5:11 before Carr cut Ohio State’s lead to 69-67 with a layup with 42 seconds left.

Maryland 79, Rutgers 59: At Piscataway, New Jersey, Damonte Dodd scored six points inside in a 17-6 spurt to start the second half and Maryland avoided its first four-game losing streak since the 2004-05 season with a 79-59 victory over Rutgers on Tuesday night.

Dodd had all nine of his points and six of his seven rebounds in the second half as the Terrapins (23-7, 11-6 Big Ten) won for only the third time in eight games. The skid took Maryland out of the Top 25.

Maryland did not put a scorer into double figures until Ivan Bender (10 points) scored on a layup with 4:07 to play. Melo Trimble led the Terps with 11 points and L.G. Gill had 10.

Mike Williams had 14 points to lead Rutgers (13-17, 2-15), which has lost six in a row and 16 of 18. C.J. Gettys added 12 points and Deshawn Freeman had 11.

Tackling the horseshoe sandwich at Honest Abe’s in Morris MORRIS – I’ve never been to Springfield, at least not that I can remember.

And I’ve never eaten a shoe.

Although, apparently, that’s a thing people do there. And in Morris.

On Thursdays, it’s horseshoe sandwich day at Honest Abe’s in Morris.

And, it’s clearly worth it to go and get a full one for $10.50 that day. It’s usually $15, which is why I brought up the special.

But, onto the sandwich, or, the gargantuan open-faced Texas Toast with toppings and cheese sauce and fries.

I didn’t eat it. Or order it. Because one of my fellow diners did.

And he raved about it, although it wasn’t his first time having the meal there.

For starters, you can order the full one (horseshoe) or the half one (pony shoe). And I don’t want to advocate for overeating, because I’m not sure you want to eat the entire horseshoe in one sitting, but you can certainly bring home half and have two great meals instead of one.

On top, you can order Angus beef, grilled chicken, buffalo chicken, Philly steak, garlic pork, ham or bacon and eggs.

If I were to go again, I’d for sure order the bacon and eggs. Because it sounds delicious. The photo we have, from my fellow diner, is the buffalo chicken. It was a lot and he took half home.

Along with the horseshoe, Honest Abe’s has plenty of burger choices.

More than 20, in fact, and you can substitute a chicken breast for any of them, if you choose.

I was looking for something spicy, so I went with The Booth, featuring pepper jack cheese, jalapeños and flaming sauce.

Though the Gettysburg, with cheese, bacon and an over-easy egg, seemed like it might just hit the spot, too.

The burger was fantastic and it was even hotter than I expected. Our other fellow diner had a Log Cabin, with provolone cheese and mozzarella cheese sticks on top, covered in marinara sauce.

There are plenty of other options, with toppings from The Philadelphia (cream cheese and bell peppers) to Chicago Style (relish, mustard, tomato, onions, pickle, hot peppers and celery salt) to The Mario (spinach, Swiss cheese, grilled onions and Sriracha mayo) to Peanut Butter and Jealousy with, you guessed it, peanut butter, jelly and bacon. Yes, I wrote bacon.

I wasn’t enough of a risk-taker to get peanut butter on my burger this time.

Preservatives can cause allergies Dear Doctor: BHT, a preservative in a lot of food products, really does a number on me. One serving of food with BHT, and I wake up with terrific pain in my head and right eye, upset stomach, chills and fever.

How common are such allergies, and how can I avoid these reactions?

Dear Reader: BHA and BHT, short for butylated hydroxyanisole and butylated hydroxytoluene, are antioxidants used to preserve a wide array of foods, including snack foods, meats, butter, chewing gum and rice, as well as cosmetic products and medications. Both BHA and BHT prevent oxidation of oils, helping prevent ingredients from becoming rancid and, in some foods – such as breakfast cereals, baked goods and potato chips – helping maintain product crispness.

These antioxidants rarely cause allergic reactions. This first was officially evaluated more than 25 years ago in a placebo-controlled trial involving two patients who had a history of hives; the patients were first exposed to BHA and BHT via foods in their diet, then to a placebo. The elimination of these two components from their diet led to a reduction in the frequency and the severity of their hives.

In 2007, a study published in Toxicology and Applied Pharmacology identified the mechanism for the allergic reaction.

In studying rats given BHT, researchers found an increase in immediate skin allergies, linking it to an allergic response that caused a type of white blood cells, known as mast cells, to release the chemicals histamine and leukotrienes. These chemicals caused an allergic response in the skin.

BHA in particular has been singled out as potentially increasing the risk of cancer. This worry stems from studies in rats and hamsters in the 1980s. One notable study showed that rats fed diets with up to 1 to 2 percent of BHA had increased can-

In the United States, the highest amount of BHA that is approved in foods is 0.02 percent, which is significantly less. Overall, some studies in rats have shown an increased risk of cancer, and others have shown a decreased risk in cancer.

When it comes to humans, researchers have found little evidence of a potential cancer link. In a study published in 2000 in Food and Chemical Toxicology, researchers in the Netherlands used a dietary questionnaire to ask 120,000 men and women between the ages of 55 and 69 about their dietary intake of BHA and BHT. After six years, the authors found no increase in stomach cancer among those with higher BHA/BHT intake. When it comes to cosmetic products, the very low percentages of BHA and BHT found in those products have not been linked to cancer.

Your reactions to BHT appear to be a form of allergy. Obviously, the best thing you can do is simply avoid this chemical.

While writing this, I looked at the foods in my house to determine whether they might contain BHA or BHT and found only one item.

So it seems you could eliminate your home exposure to BHA and BHT by reading labels.

Dear Abby: DEAR ABBY I have always tried to be a Jeanne compassionate Phillips person. I have experienced a lot of abuse, and I’m sensitive to others who go through it. A man across the street from me has been arrested three times in the last six months for domestic abuse. I rarely see a woman there, so I don’t know if the victim is a woman or a child. I moved into the neighborhood only six months ago. My elderly mother lives here with me.

I’m torn about what to do. My heart says I should reach out to the people who live there and make friends with them. My head says stay out of their business because I don’t need the drama.

How do we as a society not turn a blind eye to abuse in our neighborhoods and still protect ourselves and loved ones? I don’t want to put my mother or myself in jeopardy, but I don’t want the person/people in that house to think they are alone. – No More in Texas Dear No More: While I applaud you for being so caring, for your own safety, I caution you to proceed very slowly in getting to know these people. Some communities provide anonymous tip lines so citizens can report a crime without endangering themselves or their families. The best thing you can do is to keep your eyes open and if something is happening, call the police and report it. If it involves a child, contact child protective services.

Dear Abby: My parents and I were always close. However, recently they stole my debit card, my PIN and child support check. They forged my signature and spent the entire check, which was more than $1,000.

I am always lending them money. I have never said no when they needed it. To top it off, they lied to me about the check for an entire month. I only found out when I turned the fraud in to the bank and heard it was my parents who had committed it.

At the bridge table, it is sometimes a question of making it too expensive for an opponent to win a trick -- as in this deal. How can South make four spades after West leads the diamond king to declarer’s ace?

South’s four-spade overcall was sensible. He needed little from partner to be making game, he knew a slam was unlikely and he wanted to make it expensive for the opponents to bid higher.

South started with nine top tricks: seven spades, one heart and one diamond. He could get an extra winner if (a) he could play the trump suit without loss; or (b) the heart finesse worked; or (c) he could gain a club trick; or (d) he could ruff a club on the board.

However, the bidding suggested that both major-suit finesses were losing. Also, West was most unlikely to have the club ace and king, because he surely would have led that ace at trick one.

Then South saw the solution. He played a heart to dummy’s ace and led the club four. What could East have done?

If he rose with his king, declarer would have gained a club trick from the jack opposite the queen-five.

So East played low. But when West took South’s queen with his ace, he couldn’t win, either. He did his best by returning a club. East won with his king and shifted to his trump, but declarer took the trick with his ace and ruffed his last club on the board.
