Joliet asks Caterpillar to consider moving here

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The city of Joliet has made its pitch to Caterpillar Inc. as the company looks in the Chicago area for a new corporate headquarters.

Peoria-based Caterpillar announced Jan. 31 that it will move its corporate headquarters to the Chicago area to be closer to a major airport.

Caterpillar has not decided where it is going, and Joliet is among what may be many municipalities suggesting the company move to their towns.

“There’ll be 200 towns,” Joliet Economic Development Director Steve Jones said.

“You’ll have towns from Indiana and Wis-

for space accessible this year to move top executives into the Chicago area,” Greuling said. “That would require an existing facility – office space – already in place.”

Greuling, however, commended Joliet for contacting Caterpillar.

“It’s good to see communities getting aggressive and trying to reach out,” he said.

In recent years, Caterpillar has been moving jobs out of the Joliet area more than moving them in.

The Caterpillar plant on Route 6 in Troy Township has been operating since the 1950s and employed nearly 7,000 workers at its peak in the late 1970s. Numbers have declined since, and the job count was down to 660 after Caterpillar moved certain production lines to Mexico in 2015.

Woman pleads guilty in Bolingbrook slaying

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Bolingbrook woman last week pleaded guilty to the 2015 murder of her husband.

Michele A. Evans, 52, faces four to 20 years in prison when she is sentenced in May by Judge Dave Carlson. Evans made a “blind plea” to one count of second-degree murder in exchange for first-degree murder charges being dropped.

Evans has no prior criminal record

and could receive probation. She has been out on bond since a month after her husband’s slaying.

According to police, on April 16, 2015, Michele Evans stabbed David Evans, 55, twice in the chest Michele with a kitchen knife after A. Evans an argument at their home in the 500 block of Bloomfield Drive in Bolingbrook. David Evans died the following day, and Michele Evans was ar-

Defense attorney Joel Brodsky said last year a psychologist has determined Michele Evans was suffering from “battered-woman syndrome” at the time and acted in self-defense.

The couple had lived in their house for more than 25 years and had two daughters who were not living with them. According to police reports, officers were called to the house six times in 15 years for domestic violence, noise complaints and dog complaints.

Joliet expects to save on bulbs and labor with new lighting

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The city has been changing a lot of lightbulbs lately.

More than 1,000 streetlight bulbs and fixtures are being changed in the first phases of a program aimed at converting major streets in Joliet to LED lighting.

If the new LED bulbs work as planned, they won’t have to be changed for 20 years. The high-pressure sodium bulbs being replaced have a life span of about four years, traffic engineer Russ Lubash said.

“Our goal is to replace all of the fixtures that are city owned,” Lubash said.

City-owned streetlights are on major thoroughfares. Streetlights in residential subdivisions and neighborhoods typically are owned by ComEd. The goal of replacing all lights, however, may be slowed by changes in a grant program that has helped fund the switch to LED lighting. But city officials believe the program, funded with an energy efficiency tax that people pay on

between Jefferson Street and the Louis Joliet Mall.

LED bulbs provide more uniform lighting, spreading the light evenly so it doesn’t dim on the edges.

“They’ll never go out,” he said.

“They’ll just start dimming.”

The city paid $113,000 to replace 289 fixtures in the first phase of the program that started in 2016. Joliet will be reimbursed nearly $59,000 through the Illinois Energy Now program run by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. The city expects the lights to pay for themselves in five years.

In 2017, the city expects to pay about $340,000 to replace 759 lights, but will be reimbursed nearly $300,000. The city expects the lights to pay for themselves in less than a year and a half.

D-210 panel backs boiler replacement

fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – A Lincoln-Way District 210 advisory committee agreed to forward recommendations to the Board of Education regarding the replacement of boilers and a four-year electricity purchasing contract.

At the district’s Finance and Building committee Tuesday, committee members agreed to forward to the board a recommendation to approve four-year electricity purchasing contract with Direct Energy that district officials said would save the district about $600,000 over the years.

The committee also agreed to pro-

ceed with the replacement of B-Wing boilers at Lincoln-Way Central High School.

Rich Wilkey, the district’s buildings and grounds director, gave a cost analysis comparing the option to replace the B-Wing boilers with the expansion of Central’s heating plant.

Superintendent Scott Tingley said the school’s B-Wing boilers were 47 years old and damaged.

Tingley also informed the committee about bids for bus leases, with the lowest bidder being Midwest Transit costing the district $8,690 for the total lease cost per bus per year for a fiveyear lease.

Committee member Norman Roney

asked whether the district goes through a periodic review process to analyze and determine “if we really want to be in the bus business.”

Tingley said the district provides transportation for feeder districts with the exception of Mokena School District 159.

Tingley said to Roney that if the board directed him to analyze the district’s transportation, he would do so.

Board member Christopher Kosel said to Roney it was an issue the board reviewed in the past.

“What is the advantage of us running our own bus service? I’m not saying that there isn’t,” Roney said.

Kosel said it was something that

could be looked at from the board level.

Kelly Luzzo, the district’s finance director, gave an update on the district’s operating revenues and expenses, noting that for the fiscal year to date, the district’s operating revenue is still at a 2.6 percent decrease from the previous year and that operating expenses have experienced a 9.1 percent decline from the previous year.

With revenues, Luzzo said the decline can be attributed to the district receiving less in federal and state revenues for mandated categorical payments.

“We still have not received any payments for this fiscal year from the state,” she said.

Tuminello tapped for committee chairman

mmallory@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Will County Board member Ray Tuminello, R-New Lenox, will take over as chairman of the board’s capital improvements committee.

Tuminello will fill a vacancy created when board member Ragan Freitag, R-Wilmington, announced in January she had accepted a role as the board’s new chief of staff. Her last meeting as chairwoman of the committee was last week. She will begin her chief of staff role Feb. 27.

Capital improvements committee Vice Chairman Mike Fricilone, R-Homer Glen, will continue in that role and as chairman of the finance committee.

The board’s committee leadership is decided by board Speaker Jim Moustis, R-Frankfort.

Tuminello has served on the board for three years. He is vice chairman of the finance committee and the legislative and policy committee. He also is a member of the executive committee and the land use and development committee.

The capital improvements committee has been meeting twice each month since last summer as it closely monitors several capital projects, including the new Will County Public Safety Complex and the new Will County Judicial Complex, which still is in the planning stages.

“I remain committed to the task of building these projects in Will County, on time, on budget and without raising taxes,” Tuminello said. “I look forward to working with Ragan in her new role, as well as with the entire county board to see these projects through to comple-

tion.”

In other news, the board’s legislative and policy committee met Tuesday morning to discuss its 2017 federal legislative agenda.

Will County will support passage of a long-term Federal Aviation Administration authorization bill or extension of current law that includes, among other things, funding to support a permanent or remote tower at Lewis University Airport.

The county board, according to county documents, supports a comprehensive tax reform – the first since 1986.

“The Trump tax plan and tax proposals being developed by House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-WI, and House Ways & Means Chairman Kevin Brady, R-TX, would reduce taxes for individuals and businesses,” according to a draft of the legislative agenda. “The elimination of

many deductions, tax ‘loopholes’ and changes in the treatment of taxes on goods and services imported and exported are how these proposals are able to lower the overall rates.”

Will County also is concerned that the municipal bond tax benefit could be changed either by being eliminated altogether or having the deduction capped. Several past budgets and tax reform plans have included language that capped the deductibility of municipal bonds, which would likely result in higher borrowing costs, according to the draft agenda.

“Will County hopes that its congressional delegation will support and advocate for maintaining the treatment of municipal bonds as tax exempt because it is critical to economic growth and local infrastructure development,” the draft agenda states.

Joliet D-86 kindergarten registration to begin in March The HERALD–NEWS JOLIET – Kindergarten registration at Joliet Public Schools District 86 will begin in early March.

For next school year, the registration for kindergarten students will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. March 2 and 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 3 at elementary schools districtwide, according to a District 86 news release.

For families living in the Forest Park neighborhood, registration will take place at Forest Park Community Center, 1017 Woodruff Road, Joliet.

Any child who will be 5 years old on or before Sept. 1, 2017, must be registered, district officials said. An original state-issued or certified copy of a child’s birth certificate and three proofs of residency are required.

In addition, a physical examination and proof of immunization records must be submitted by the first day of school.

District officials said three proofs of residency include one proof from Cate-

gory A and two proofs from Category B.

Category A includes:

• Most recent tax bill and proof of payment • Mortgage papers for homeowners • Signed and dated lease and proof of last month’s payment • Letter from a manager for trailer park residents and proof of last month’s payment • Letter of residence from a landlord in lieu of lease • Letter of residence when the person seeking to enroll a student is living with

a district resident.

Category B includes:

• Driver’s license or state identification • Vehicle registration • Voter registration • Most recent cable television and/or credit card bill • Current public aid card • Current homeowners/renters insurance policy and premium payment receipt • Most recent utility bill • Receipt for moving van rental • Mail received at new residence.

Plainfield considering new community foundation

mmallory@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – A by-Plainfield, for-Plainfield foundation could soon be established.

Community Foundation of Will County Executive Director Michael Trench presented the nonprofit’s idea to form a Community Foundation of Plainfield to Plainfield village trustees Monday night at a committee of the whole workshop. The board was receptive to the idea.

“There are over 780 community foundations in the United States, including 27 in Illinois,” Trench said.

But while the Community Foundation of Will County has historically focused its philanthropy programs countywide, it’s now looking at more of a hyperlocal approach, at least in Plainfield.

“We’ve found along the way that one of the challenges of Will County is simply the geography,” Trench said.

He said people in various communities – for example, Plainfield, Beecher, Wilmington and Bolingbrook – don’t feel they have much in common.

“What if in Plainfield there was

a Plainfield community fund that the people could put money into?” Trench said. “It would be restricted and designated for doing good things in Plainfield alone.”

There are a couple of reasons for this altered approach.

A more giving generation will be passing on their estates to the consumer generation, Trench said, and he expects nonprofit funding from governments will decrease.

“The traditional streams of revenue that support nonprofits are going to be declining,” he said. “Organizations are going to need alternative sources of revenue.”

Trustee Margie Bonuchi wondered how established local nonprofits would work with the proposed foundation.

Trench said the county organization’s leadership has “good conversations” with the United Way of Will County so purposes aren’t duplicated.

He expects that to continue with other nonprofits, such as the Plainfield Riverfront Foundation.

Trustee Bill Lamb said it would be nice to have Plainfield, which has four

QUICK NEWS PLAINFIELD – The Plainfield Public Library District English language learner program is expanding, thanks to a grant from the American Library Association, according to a district news release.

The association awarded the library a one-time, $10,000 grant, which will be used to buy 20 iPads loaded with applications such as Conversation Builder, iTranslate and U.S. Citizenship.

The grant is funded by the Dollar General Literacy Foundation and awarded to public libraries by ALA’s Office for Diversity, Literacy and Outreach Services in order to expand services to adult English language

high schools, develop a community spirit of “we’re all Plainfield.” He said the village is working toward that in its strategic plan and added he thinks the community is “getting close” to that vision.

Village Administrator Brian Murphy asked trustees for their input on next steps and suggestions for the community foundation, adding that he’s

learners. This is the second time the Plainfield library has received the grant. In 2010, the library used a grant of $5,000 to implement the English language learner program and grow its English language learner resources collection.

The district’s English language learner program has grown from one session a week in 2010 to its current five sessions a week. These encompass 28 languages, average 500 adults per month and are held at an intermediate level, while beginners work with tutors at their own level and pace.

Residents concerned about proposed high school bus depot

Shaw Media correspondent NEW LENOX – A proposal by Providence Catholic High School in New Lenox to use its property on Ferro Drive and Gougar Road as a transportation hub for parking and fueling school buses has met with some resistance from residents.

The proposal for a special use permit to allow parking of a maximum of 16 school buses, as well as the installation of an office trailer and an aboveground fueling tank, at the corner of the parking lot of the school’s 26-acre sports field was presented to the New Lenox Village Board for consideration Monday night.

At the village’s planning commission meeting last month, a public hearing was held during which three residents spoke against the measure and an email and a letter from two others were read aloud, village Senior Planner Jeff Smith said. Commissioners at that meeting unanimously agreed to recommend the high school’s proposal to the village board, Smith said.

The school’s director of advancement, Ed Barrett, and director of facilities, Larry Viano, were present at the

village board meeting Monday and gave the board “all the detailed information necessary,” the Rev. Richard McGrath, president of Providence, said in a phone interview. McGrath is traveling and could not attend the meeting.

“We want to use our property to park our buses – that’s all we’re asking for,” McGrath said.

McGrath said that about seven buses will leave and return to the parking lot on school days for about two hours in the early morning and in the afternoon to transport students between home and school. The other nine buses are used infrequently as charter buses and only one or two at a time, he said.

The buses will leave at 10-minute intervals so there should be minimal impact on traffic, McGrath said. He added that this is a mutual assessment both the school and village officials arrived upon.

About six of about two dozen concerned residents present at the meeting spoke to the board, Mayor Tim Baldermann said in a phone interview. They voiced worries about noise and traffic accidents from the increased presence of buses, and raised questions about the effect of the fuel tank on a nearby creek, he said.

Baldermann added that the residents were informed the fuel tank would need approval from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency.

“I can appreciate both sides of the issue,” Baldermann said. “We want to support Providence High School, which has been a good neighbor, but I can also understand the concerns of the residents.”

Attempts to contact residents who spoke against the measure at Monday’s

meeting were not immediately successful.

The board has requested that the police department supply data about accidents at that intersection and that Providence provide any further information that may address the residents’ concerns before any decisions are made, Baldermann said.

The measure will come to the board for further discussion and possible approval at its Feb. 27 meeting.

Barbel said as she talked to, and watched the kids tell their stories, she was impressed with their enthusiasm.

“It’s nice to talk to kids about books they are excited about. I’m excited about books, and it’s good to see the kids excited about books. You could see the enthusiasm for their books on their faces,” Barbel said.

“One child said his book made him want to write his own book.”

Book fair displays will be available to view until March.

Brayden Caraynoff-Huber donned a Jewish badge upon his shirt pocket as he told stories of what he learned about the Frank family of Amsterdam, both in text and in person.

In early fall of 2016, the 12-year-old Minooka resident studied the book, “Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl,” as part as his homeschool curriculum and, as promised, when he finished his studies, his mother took him to Amsterdam to live out what he learned in books.

“I learned they were cramped and had to be very quiet. I felt guilty.

Those people had a great life and the Nazis had to take it away because they were Jewish,” Caraynoff-Huber said.

Caraynoff-Huber, among other local home-schooled students, showcased his favorite fiction or nonfiction book in the second annual Homeschool Fair at the Shorewood-Troy Public Library on Thursday. Participants filled out a book information sheet provided by the library in order to guide the students, and then they made a tri-fold poster board, some with three-dimensional props as well.

“It’s a good way for the kids to look at a book, take it apart and then build a presentation on what they have learned,” children’s library assistant Mara Barbel said.

After a successful first event last year, Barbel said the department wanted to offer it again for the homeschooled students. Eleven children registered from Morris, Channahon, Minooka and Shorewood.

“It’s good for the home-schoolers to get out and meet new people than their used to being around, Barbel said.

After each child placed his or her display upon the book shelves, parents, children and patrons of the library were allowed to walk around, read the boards and ask questions of the child.

Nine-year-old Eloise Malley of Shorewood chose to present the book “Little Women” because it was one of her favorite books. Along with her poster, she made a 12-inch-tall chair, and a fireplace with twigs.

Eloise’s mother, Reyna Malley, said she has one rule when it comes to these events – the kids have to use their own thoughts.

“One of the things we work on in language arts is how to summarize a story, pick the theme, ideas and character, so this fits perfectly with the skills we are working on. My kids also like crafty things,” Reyna said.

Joliet is among 36 municipalities that have used the Illinois Energy Now program to install LED lighting, according to the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.

City officials are waiting to find out how funds will be administered in the future.

“We’re optimistic there’s still going

to be some kind of program,” Lubash said.

The city is working on far West Side streets first because those lights are farthest away from the East Side maintenance garage where the electric crews are stationed, Lubash said. In addition to the cost of bulbs, he said, there is the cost and time involved in sending out crews to install new ones.

“If we’ve got a call on an outage on Arbeiter Road, that’s a 16-mile trip for a bucket truck,” Lubash said. “It could take 40 minutes to get out there.”

Arbeiter Road is among the streets getting new lights in the coming months.

Upon seeing a Wrangler in the wild, the uninitiated might look up at a cliff and ask “How did it get up there?”

But fans of the ultimate off-roader know the iconic Jeep can scale some really rough terrain with a ruggedness and capability matched by few if any others in its class.

The whole Wrangler lineup – and its most-award-winning cousin, the Cherokee – are on display at the Chicago Auto Show. An easier trek might be to a local dealership, where you can get one-onone service and maybe a test drive (cliff not included).

The four-passenger 2017 Wrangler and its close kin, the five-passenger fourdoor Wrangler Unlimited, are even more capable than previous models. However, true to its mission, Jeep offers buyers a host of trims with varied strengths depending on how they intend (or dream) of using it.

Robert G. Charland, age 91, passed away on Sunday February 12, 2017 at the Illinois Veterans Home at LaSalle where he spent his last three years. He had resided at the Timbers of Shorewood, IL. for several years and was formerly of Hendersonville, NC. He was born on April 12, 1925 in Nashua, NH to Marie (nee Desclos) and Emile Charland. Bob sadly lost his father when he was only 11 years old. Robert attended Bryant College in Rhode Island, where he obtained a degree in accounting. A U.S. Army veteran of W.W.II. Bob retired in 2001 from Union Carbide Corporation. He enjoyed carpentry and especially spending his time outdoors doing the yard work.

Preceded in death by his loving wife, Dorothy (nee Harsnett) (2003); and his parents, including his stepfather, Oscar Bleau.

Survived by his two sons, Robert (Laura) Charland of Shorewood, IL and Edouard ( Kristy) Charland of Lee’s Summit, MO; one daughter, Mary Jane (Todd) Lutheran of Stratford, CT; one sister, Rose Marie (the late Bruce) Overton of Aiken, SC; five grandchildren, Evan, Claire, Clay, Chad Charland and Megan Lutheran; as well as several nieces and nephews.

BERNARD MICHAEL FALETTI SR. Bernard Michael Faletti Sr. “Barney,” age 76, of Wilmington, IL, passed away suddenly, Monday, February 13, 2017 at his home.

Born February 19, 1940 in Braidwood, IL to the late Joseph and Rose (nee Bertino) Faletti. Member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Braidwood. Barney Sr. spent his days at Faletti Meats, where he enjoyed visiting with his customers and talking about the local sports and family. He started his days with his close friends and family, “The Coffee Crew,” solving many of the problems in the world. He loved watching his grandchildren play sports and spending time with them fishing on the river.

Ruth B. Baker, 87, of Romeoville, IL, (formerly of Downers Grove, IL), passed away on January 19, 2017 after a brief fight with cancer.

She was born in Chicago, IL on August 17, 1929 to George and Emma Braner. She attended the St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing in Chicago, IL and graduated in 1950 with a degree in nursing and was honored at the time of graduation as Most Outstanding Nurse in Pediatric Nursing. Her last position in nursing was as the director of health care at Sisters of St. Joseph in LaGrange, IL, until she retired in 1993.

Ruth was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Louis Baker Jr. (86) who passed away in 2014; and her eldest son, Louis Baker III. She is survived by three sons: Lawrence (Mary), Scott, and Wayne (Rebecca) and three grandchildren Jennifer, Laure (Nick) and Amanda.

She was a loving and caring mother and grandmother who was always giving to others. Nona was a strong lady who was an excellent homemaker. Church was a very essential part of her life where she was happy to be active and involved. Nona also enjoyed gardening and canning her yield. She was a great storyteller and always kept the attention of her audience with a brilliant imagination. She will be truly missed by all who knew her.

Shawn Elliott Hinton made his transition into eternal life on Thursday, February 9, 2017 at St. Luke Hospital in Milwaukee, WI surrounded by his family.

Shawn was born on October 25, 1968 to Mary Ruth (Barfield) and Roosevelt Hinton. He was educated in the Joliet public school system and completed the requirements to earn his GED. Shawn was the baby of ten children, and affectionately call Ashy Bum as a child and beyond. He was compassionate, affectionate, and the life of the party.

ARLIE J. MARKS Arlie J. “Joe” Marks, age 92 years, passed away peacefully Sunday, February 12, 2017 with his devoted family by his side.

Arlie was born and raised in Southern Illinois. He a proud veteran and retired from the U.S. Army.

Preceded in death by his loving wife of 69 years, Dorothy L. (nee Carner) Marks (2012); his parents, Joseph B. and Martha L. Marks; two brothers and three sisters. Arlie was the caring father to Gary, Karen, Dotty, Arlie “Jim” and his adopted daughter, Darlene Hossbach, and also became a loving father to Jackie, Charlie and Christine as they each in turn married into the family. Robert William Piercy Sr., age 86, of Joliet, passed away peacefully, Monday, February 13, 2017 at the Joliet Area Community Hospice Home, with his loving family by his side.

Born November 4, 1930 in Chicago, he was a graduate of Illinois Institute of Technology with a degree in chemical engineering. He began working for Blockson, which later became Olin Corporation. During his career with the company, he served as a project manager in Johannesburg, South Africa, was head of engineering for the Southwest Region in Lake Charles, LA, and retired as governmental affairs liaison.

Robert was a man committed to his family and his church. His devotion to his faith was exemplary. Bob also enjoyed playing french horn with the Joliet American Legion Band for many years.

Surviving are his beloved wife of 65 years, Rosemarie (Novak) Piercy; his children, Debbie (George) Shimek, Judy Piercy (Peter Jarjisian), Mary Ann Piercy, Tom (Sue) Piercy and Patty (Dan) Cushing; seven grandchildren, Jeff (Kalissa) Shimek, Terra (Tim) Fondriest, Megan (Mike) Kovach, and Collin, Erin, Emily, and Tommy Piercy; and three great-grandchildren, Amelia and Henry Fondriest and Raegan Shimek. SPRINGFIELD – Illinois officials waited more than five months to alert dozens of domestic violence programs that their funding had been eliminated, an omission that has forced layoffs and other cuts at some facilities, according to interviews and documents reviewed

by The Associated Press.

No one knows – or is saying – why about $9 million in state funding for 62 programs that provide shelter, counseling and advocacy for victims of domestic abuse was left out of a six-month budget that took effect July 1. When providers finally learned they were left empty-handed, they scrambled to make up the lost money by slashing jobs and salaries and expanding client waiting lists.

Although there is no indication officials intended to slice funding for the domestic violence programs, the money won’t easily be restored in the state’s precarious economic situation. Illinois has operated without a spending plan since July 2015 because of bickering between first-term Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and Democrats who control the Legislature.

Rauner will deliver a budget address Wednesday to the General Assembly.

It wasn’t until Dec. 16 – just two weeks before the temporary budget expired – that Human Services Secretary James Dimas sent a letter to all providers alerting them that the money had been left out.

The program was fully funded in 2015-2016, at $18.6 million, money that was tapped out by late summer.

In his letter, Dimas acknowledged “some confusion” about funding in the latest spending plan and promised that it would be fully paid when available.

Dimas offered no explanation for the delayed announcement, and spokeswoman Meghan Powers declined to answer AP questions about the late notice.

Experienced state vendors know they sign state contracts that make payment dependent on legislative approval. But domestic violence program providers say they submitted budgets to DHS for review and, in some cases, had to amend them before getting DHS contract approval last spring.

Without notice that there wasn’t money forthcoming, “They’ve already spent that money and they’re struggling,” said Vickie Smith, executive director of the Illinois Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

WASHINGTON – Just six days into his presidency, Donald Trump was informed his national security adviser had misled his vice president about contacts with Russia. Trump kept his No. 2 in the dark and waited another two weeks before ousting the aide, Michael Flynn, citing a slow but steady erosion of trust, White House officials said Tuesday.

Flynn was interviewed by the FBI about his telephone conversations with Russia’s ambassador to the U.S., a sign his ties to Russia had caught the attention of law enforcement officials.

But in the White House’s retelling of Flynn’s stunning downfall, his error was not that he discussed U.S. sanctions with the Russian before the inauguration – a potential violation of a rarely enforced law – but the fact that he denied it for weeks, apparently misleading Vice President Mike Pence and other senior Trump aides about the nature of the conversations. White House officials said they conducted a thorough review of Flynn’s interactions, including transcripts of calls secretly recorded by U.S. intelligence officials, but found nothing illegal.

Pence, who had vouched for Flynn in a televised interview, is said to have been angry and deeply frustrated.

“The evolving and eroding level of trust as a result of this situation and a series of other questionable incidents is what led the president to ask General Flynn for his resignation,” White House spokesman Sean Spicer said Tuesday, one day after the president asked Flynn to leave.

Flynn, in an interview with The Daily Caller News Foundation, said Monday “there were no lines crossed” in his conversations with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak.

The officials and others with knowledge of the situation were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly and requested anonymity.

Ahead of the Jan. 20 inauguration, Pence and other officials insisted publicly that Flynn had not discussed sanctions in his talks with Kislyak.

On Jan. 26, Acting Attorney General Sally Yates contacted White House counsel Don McGahn to raise concerns about discrepancies between the public accounting and what intelligence officials knew to be true about the contacts based on routine recordings of communications with foreign officials who are in the U.S.

Governor obligated by law to present a budget

One simple truth shines through all the noise about Illinois’ budget “impasse” that has brought suffering to people all over our state: The Constitution of Illinois mandates in Article 8; Sec. 2: “The Governor shall prepare and submit to the General Assembly, at a time prescribed by law, a State budget for the ensuing fiscal year.” Expenditures cannot exceed revenues.

Wednesday is the day the governor is required by law to present his proposed budget.

Nowhere in the Illinois Constitution will you find a requirement that the legislature must agree to any pet projects of the governor before he fulfills his duty to present a budget.

The governor has masterfully misled the state into thinking the budget process starts with legislators and that they have failed to propose a budget.

Wrong.

It is the governor’s job under the Illinois Constitution to start the process by presenting an actual document in which he lays out specific cuts he would make to state programs and/ or increases in revenues that would make the numbers add up. He has not done that since he took office. A pledge to “work with” the General Assembly to craft a budget does not fulfill his constitutional obligation.

The reason is clear. Doing his job means identifying the unpopular cuts or tax increases he’d have to make, and he is unwilling to face the criticism.

He’d rather the other side and he announce a plan simultaneously.

He doesn’t have that choice.

Being governor means you need to lead.

more of the same abdication of responsibility that the governor has shown since the day he took office, which is why our backlog of bills has spiked to $11.3 billion in two years.

Phony savings projections from pension-reform ideas he knows the courts have already ruled unconstitutional or from union-busting fantasies won’t cut it, either.

Governor, you don’t need to ask the legislature for additional authority to make cuts.

You have it. Use it.

During the governor’s State of the State speech last month, he went “off-script” to thank the leaders of the State Senate for doing his job for him by trying to craft a budget since he refuses to. Then behind the scenes, he apparently sent the shadow organizations he and his close friends fund to try to sabotage the Senate leaders’ efforts.

This ruinous path without a real budget that the governor has forced us onto for the last two years has made all of Illinois’ already-bad problems exponentially worse. From Carbondale to Peoria to Chicago, I hear heart-breaking pleas from Illinois residents suffering from the lack of a budget.

Charities are closing programs. Mothers are forced to quit their jobs and go on public assistance because they can’t get child care. Students leave or don’t go to college. State employees put off seeing their doctors who are refusing to treat them because the state can’t pay its bills on time. Businesses have zero economic stability in this state.

Enough.

On Wednesday, do your job, governor. Spell out your cuts and revenues. Face the criticism you knew you’d face when you ran for this job. Negotiate.

Accept a compromise, sign a balanced budget, and start the healing process.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Where was the coverage for pro-life march?

To the Editor: I was deeply disappointed, but not surprised, that there wasn’t coverage of the annual pro-life march on Jan. 27 in Washington, D.C. Frankly, I was embarrassed for the women who took part in the anti-Trump, pro-choice demonstration in D.C. one day after his inauguration, supposedly marching for “the moral core of this nation.” It was a hateful, vulgar display with children in attendance.

Self-absorbed, arrogant attitudes were, sadly, evident for all to see.

Linda Sarsour, a Muslim advocating Sharia Law (a dehumanizing, oppressive law that abuses women), who reportedly has ties to the terrorist group Hamas, was a main organizer of the march. Ironically, American flag hijabs (scarfs) were made available so women could cover their heads. And this was, among other things, a march for women’s rights?

Preaching about love, women showed children how much they’re valued by championing the right to kill their own flesh and blood right up to the ninth month – even after a baby survives a botched lateterm abortion. Thankfully, my biological mother had the courage to choose life and adoption, though, I found out, she suffered terribly from guilt and despair for decades. How much more do women suffer who have killed their unborn baby – those, that is, who still have a conscience left?

While women held up signs that read “Love trumps hate,” Madonna ranted about thoughts of blowing up the White House, and proud “naaaasty women” bashed men and conservatives.

A sign that read, “If Mary had an abortion, we wouldn’t be in this mess,” insulted countless Christians. The very opposite of love was shown that day, revealing to me the spirit of rebellion behind it.

In stark contrast, the pro-life march was dignified

and respectful, filling hearts with hope and love for even the most innocent of all, babies in the womb.

Claris Van Kuiken, New Lenox Traitors and murderers shouldn’t get pass with presidential pardon To the Editor: As a proud American and a proud veteran, I am outraged by former President Obama’s commutation/ pardon of not only soldier Chelsea Manning, but also former F.A.L.N. member Oscar Lopez Rivera.

President Obama, according to press accounts, had commuted/pardoned over 1,900 persons, more than any other president and more than the last five presidents combined.

Although I disagree, he had the legal right to take this action, he didn’t have the moral or ethical right.

Manning leaked possibly classified, massive amounts of documents to Wikileaks who Obama ridiculed saying they tried to affect the recent election. Manning took an oath, knew it was wrong to disseminate these documents, was found guilty and declared a traitor. Manning served seven years of his 35-year sentence and was let out.

What signal does this send to every military person, every citizen, every young person and citizens of other countries? Those hurt, physically or mentally, killed, maimed, and operations jeopardized will forever suffer, but traitor Manning gets out early.

Rivera was a member of the FLN group that destroyed property, killed and/or injured people. Those dead or injured are still dead or injured, but Obama let Rivera go.

Traitors and murderers should not get a pass.

Those they hurt didn’t get one. The old saying applies, “If you do the crime, you do the time.”

In Tuesday night’s Southwest Prairie Conference battle at Joliet West, the Tigers were not about to allow a repeat.

Butler did score 19, including all 10 Indians’ points in the third quarter when he tried to help his team get back into the game, but it was not enough as West remained unbeaten in the SPC with a 59-38 victory.

“We vowed we weren’t going to let him score 37 again,” Tigers coach Nick DiForti said. “The kid still scored 19, but we made him work for it.”

“There were times when I thought Jonny was the best player on the floor,” Minooka coach Scott Tanaka said.

However, West (21-3, 12-0) limited him to four points in a first half where the Tigers built a 27-18 lead. At that, Minooka (20-7, 9-3) had to score the final seven points of the second quarter to be that close at the break.

“We knew 3 [Butler] is their best player,” West senior guard Teyvion Kirk said. “If he goes, they go. We knew stopping him would be a factor, so we went all out to do that.

“We switched off on him, had different guys guarding him. When one guy got a little tired, somebody else would take over.”

Tanaka thought the Indians could have been right in the game at halftime had they gotten some open shots to fall.

“We were 2 of 11 in the first half on 3s, and we were getting really, really

“We had a lot of what I thought were unforced turnovers, which you can’t have against a team like this,” Tanaka said.

Of course, West’s team quickness always is a factor.

The Tigers were their usual selves turning opposing mistakes into quick points on the other end. They led 40-28 after three quarters and breezed in the fourth quarter.

Kirk scored 15 points, Eddie Creal 14, Tabyous Casterberry 10, Trevian Bell eight and Elijah Ward seven for West. Ward and Creal excited the crowd down the stretch as Ward threw down two high-flying dunks and Creal added one.

“I said last year that Elijah Ward is our X-factor, and now he and Eddie Creal are X-factors,” DiForti said.

“We know what to expect from Kirk, Bell and Casterberry.

“And one thing tonight that might go unnoticed is the good defensive job Michael Smith did. Minooka has other guys who can fill it up besides Butler, and I thought Michael did a real nice job keeping that from happening.”

The voting for the Class 4A Lincoln-Way East Sectional will be released Thursday afternoon, and West seems destined for the No. 2 seed behind Bolingbrook, with Joliet Central likely No. 3.

In a scheduling quirk, West and Central meet only once in the conference season, and that game will be played at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Central, after the sectional seeding is complete.

Regardless, the matchup is attractive.

“It will be fun,” DiForti said. “Saturday afternoon, it will be like a college basketball atmosphere. It’s going to be 63 degrees. There may be more people show up than they thought.

“The two teams are 42-6 combined. That’s pretty good. It’s good for the community.”

OSWEGO – The Joliet Central boys basketball team found itself in a 20-9 first-quarter hole in Tuesday night’s Southwest Prairie Conference game at Oswego, but the Steelmen dug themselves out.

Cameron Blackmon scored 13 points, Jose Grubbs had 12 to go with eight rebounds, Marcellus Hornsby scored eight and JoJo McNair chipped in six as Central (21-3, 11-1) secured a 55-43 victory.

Next up for the Steelmen is Saturday afternoon’s big game, when they will entertain SPC leader and crosstown rival Joliet West at 1:30 p.m. That will mark the first and only regular-season meeting between the teams.

Plainfield East beats Lockport in semifinal

cherron@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Plainfield East’s girls basketball team realizes all too well that it will have to play its best game of the season if it wants to knock off highly-regarded Oswego East at 7 p.m. Thursday to capture its own Class 4A regional championship.

But despite missing one of its top performers, the Bengals have to be encouraged that the third time might be the charm for them after the way they played in Tuesday’s regional semifinal against Lockport.

Plainfield East jumped out to an early 12-3 lead and expanded on a 19-8 advantage after one quarter to take a 36-14 lead into halftime as it captured a 7055 victory over the Porters to improve to 23-7 on the season and set up a third meeting with Oswego East (24-4), which rolled to a 77-28 victory over Romeoville in the earlier semifinal contest.

Olivia Jenkins scored a career-high 26 points while Jada Neal added 18 points to lead coach Tony Waznonis’ Bengals. Maiya Creal and Lotanna Onua chipped in with eight points apiece while Madelyn Sidman added six points for East.

“We’re playing the best that we ever have,” Jenkins said. “In the first half we were getting steals, and the defense was transitioning into offense and we didn’t have to run much since we were going, and that’s exactly how we need to come out on Thursday. We’re going to

come out and play the best that we can against Oswego East.

“Kennedy (Collins) is a starter and one of our leading scorers, so not having her is a deficit, but we all pulled together tonight. Under coach Waz, we’ve just been building, and this is a growing program. Obviously, I love these girls since I’ve spent so much time with them.”

The Wolves defeated the Bengals, 7045, on Dec. 2 and again, 69-47, on Jan. 24.

While Waznonis knows that his squad has a difficult challenge in trying to pull off the upset, he’s happy to get the op-

portunity with the game being on his team’s home court.

“The first time we played Oswego East, we played without Kennedy as well, since she had broken her pinky then,” Waznonis said. “We played well in that first half, but we just have to get over that mental hump with them. We knew when the seeds came out what we were probably up against. We’re happy to make it there, but we’re not settling for just making it there. We have the advantage of being at our house, but we’ll have to be at our best.

“The girls have really bought into

the effort that they need to give to get to the point that we’re at. They work hard and bought into that last year, and now we’re seeing the fruits of that labor. And a lot of them are talking to the freshmen and sophomores, and they’re passing that along. If you want it, you have to work hard and earn it since no one is giving it to you.”

The Porters (16-13), who collected their most wins and finished with a winning record since the 2011 season, were paced by Taylor Hopkins, who tossed in 22 points.

Lockport, which trailed 59-32 after three quarters, continued to battle down the stretch to make the final score more respectable. It also got seven points from Elena Woulfe while Taylor Shingler, Treasure Thompson and Laurel Kucharski added five points apiece.

“There were a lot of positives this season,” Porters coach Dan Kelly said.

“I’m proud of the way that they fought and they never quit. Credit to East and its pressure in the first half. We knew it was coming and had worked on it, but it was a different thing then to see it live.

“We spotted them a half, and you can’t spot a really good basketball team a half like that. It’s a credit to all of our seniors that they kept battling. From Day 1, they’ve been the heart of the team. Some don’t get the same playing time as others, but their energy from the bench has carried us. It also did not allow us to quit on the floor, and we’re going to miss that.”

Oswego East proves too much for Romeoville

jwelge@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Alexis Marin didn’t get caught up in the opponent, or who her team was missing.

Romeoville’s senior guard was determined to go out on her terms.

She did that, putting on a shooting clinic for a half against powerhouse Oswego East. Marin scored 14 of her 19 points in the first half, a valiant effort in 15th-seeded Romeoville’s 77-28 loss to the second-seeded Wolves in Tuesday’s Class 4A Plainfield East Regional semifinal.

“It was my last game, my last time with my teammates and playing in front of my family, I wanted to give it my all and have a good time,” Marin

said. “I did what I could.”

Romeoville (13-17) already faced a daunting task against Oswego East (24-4). The Wolves, led by Indiana State recruit Ty Battle and Missouri State-bound Sydney Schultz, just completed their second straight unbeaten run through the Southwest Prairie Conference.

On top of that chore, Romeoville had to go without junior guard Brittany Osborne. The Spartans’ second-leading scorer, who leads the team in rebounds and steals, hurt her knee in Monday’s first-round win over Plainfield Central. She didn’t play Tuesday, and the prognosis going forward didn’t sound optimistic.

“She’s a tremendous softball player, too,” Romeoville coach Julio Car-

rasco said. “We might get some bad news. We’re hoping for the best.”

Carrasco challenged Marin before Tuesday’s game to step up, and she proved up to the task.

She hit three of her first four shots, a pair of pull-up jumpers and a 3-pointer from the right wing. She later knocked down another wing 3-pointer and dropped in a pretty one-handed floater in the lane.

It’s nothing new from Marin, a four-year starter who finished her career with close to 1,300 points.

“That’s her game. She hits from anywhere,” Carrasco said. “She’s a tremendous shooter. She gave us everything she could.”

Even with Marin’s heroics, Romeoville still trailed 41-18 at halftime.

Oswego East didn’t let up in the second half, and did a better job limiting Marin’s shots. Battle scored 18 points and Amaya Johns 15 for the Wolves.

“We wanted to come out strong and we did overall,” Carrasco said. “(Marin) did a great job of keeping them in the game, and I knew she would because she can shoot or drive.”

It was a good learning experience for Romeoville’s younger players.

The Spartans started three freshmen.

One of them, Damia Patton, had four points. Senior Ayanna Shelby grabbed seven rebounds.

“We’ve played Oswego East a few times before, but this is different – it’s a playoff atmosphere,” Carrasco said.

“It’s a good experience. I wanted to see more out of them, but Alexis led us.”

Wrestlers hope second state trip pays dividends

cherron@shawmedia.com For most wrestlers, especially younger ones, their first trip to the individual state finals usually is a learning experience where the focus isn’t always on achieving big things, but rather on laying the foundation for future visits.

Of this year’s 23 area individuals who will be making their second trip to Champaign, six ended up winning medals in their debut and one even advanced to the title mat. So it won’t be that surprising if the second state appearance pays off for many of them.

Of Coal City’s 11 qualifiers, seven made state trips a year ago. Jake Hiles (120 pounds) was fourth and Alex Friddle (113) took fifth, while Ryan Wasielewski (132), TJ Jezik (138), Danny Norton (160), Bryan Stopka (182) and Brock Crawford (195) also competed in Champaign.

Four of Providence Catholic’s five qualifiers also earned state appearances a year ago, with Jacob Lindsey (106) and Cole Smith (152) both finishing fifth. Dominick Ambrose (138) and Juan Bazaldua (145) are both hoping to find their way to the awards stand this year.

“I lost a close bout in the semifinals

but re-evaluated everything and got to wrestle a kid I met earlier in the tournament and got it done against him and then I knew everything was all right,” Ambrose said. “I’ve had brothers who also made it there and my oldest brother made it there three times but never really cracked through. One of my goals is to place, since I know that I’m capable of it and I’ve worked all summer for this.”

Wilmington has three individuals back who will be making their second trips to state, Bobby Shields (145), James Cox (182) and Josh Jones (285), who all seek their initial medals.

For Lockport, Baylor Fernandes (145) and Ronald Tucker Jr. (285) both earned their second state appearances. With a school-record 12 state qualifiers, the top-ranked team in Class 3A is hoping to shatter its previous program record of four medal winners in one season.

“After winning the regional, I felt confident in all of my teammates and a lot of our guys pulled big wins, so we’re expecting a lot of big things at state,” Tucker said. “I’ve been banged up a lot more this year than in any other season, so I just have to push through it.

I’ve had really good weeks of practices the past two weeks, so I’m looking to improve the rest of the year.”

Morris’ Cody Baldridge (182) competed in the Class 2A title match a year ago and has a much better chance to win if he gets back there since he doesn’t have to meet up again with Washington’s Jacob Warner, the nation’s top-ranked individual at 195.

Plainfield North’s Luke Smiley (138) and Lincoln-Way Central’s Jason Stokes (132) are the only two area individuals who will be heading to Champaign for a second time who didn’t make it there last year. Smiley beat Stokes in the 2015 sectional finals, which also was in Normal.

“I made it my sophomore year but didn’t make it last year, so I’m glad to get back into it,” Smiley said. “Last year left a sour taste in my mouth and made me want to go into the offseason and work hard and make some improvements. My goal all season has been to be all-state and I know it will take a lot of hard work since I have some good kids at my weight.”

Stokes competed at Lincoln-Way East for the past three years but moved to Lincoln-Way Central this year due to the closing of the district’s North campus. While a new setting for a senior season can be a drawback, Stokes has enjoyed his time competing for the Knights.

“My motivation was to make it to

state,” Stokes said. “It was hard to pick myself up after last year. So I just of just took my mind off of it and knew going into this season that I didn’t want it to happen again. I had to make it down to state for my senior year.

This year has been fun since it’s been a nice change.”

Plainfield East’s Anthony Zamora (126) and Bolingbrook’s Dylan Burnoski (126) have both advanced to finals the past two weekends and wouldn’t mind meeting up again at state with something at stake in their second visits there. Burnoski claimed sixth place in his initial trip.

Lincoln-Way East’s Sam Diehl (285) has been ranked among the top heavyweights in the state all season. After falling to Tucker in the sectional final, he’s hoping to finish on a high note in his second and final appearance in Champaign.

“After wrestling tonight, I know what I have to fix,” Diehl said. “I’m going to have to get past some good kids to get to where my goal is at. I think that a few of us can make it to the top of the podium, so it’s just a matter of who shows up and who has a great tournament.”

Lemont’s Damyen Gothard (170) also will be making his second state appearance.

Oh shirt, Maddon has new slogans

bmiles@dailyherald.com MESA, Ariz. – The world champion Cubs aren’t planning to mess too much with success this year.

But with Joe Maddon at the helm as manager, you can expect a new wrinkle here or a new slogan or two there.

Maddon met the news media Tuesday along with team president Theo Epstein and general manager Jed Hoyer as pitchers and catchers reported for spring training, and discussed his motivational messages.

“We’re working on several, including ‘That’s Cub,’ ” Maddon said of his slogans. “That’s coming directly from Wrigley, I believe. I kind of dig ‘That’s Cub.’ “Beyond that, I want to focus on the word ‘uncomfortable.’ I want to focus on the word ‘authenticity.’ And ‘don’t forget the heartbeat.’ ” It might be difficult for players, fans and the media to keep track of all that, but no doubt Maddon will keep the T-shirt companies busy with all of those sayings.

As with most things Maddon, there’s a method to the madness.

Start with “uncomfortable.” Who wants to be uncomfortable?

Let Joe explain.

“It’s really important to be uncomfortable,” he began. “If you become a comfortable person, I think that subtracts growth from the equation. I think if you remain somewhat uncomfortable, you’ll continue to grow. You don’t become stagnant. You don’t become complacent, set in your ways. On every level, I want us to be uncomfortable. I think that’s a really positive word. That’s one

Maddon went all humanist on us when he talked about the “heartbeat.”

“Don’t forget the heartbeat,” he said.

“Why? Last year, Game 7, Cleveland.

Things went badly for a bit. We came back and regrouped because our guys got together in a room, void of any kind of statistical, video, analytical kind of information. They went in there as human beings and came out unified. And that’s Cub. Everybody just wants to talk about this other stuff, and everybody’s forgetting the heartbeat. So I don’t want us to forget the heartbeat – ever.”

All of this talk is geared toward the Cubs putting themselves in position to repeat as world champions. The talent is good enough to reach the postseason, where anything can happen.

For now, the goal seems to be staying hungry.

“After a World Series, you do kind of either get complacent or get even hungrier, because now that you’ve tasted it, there’s no real in-between,” said Epstein, who won two World Series titles with Boston before coming to the Cubs. “I never doubted it for a second that with our group of guys they’ll be extremely hungry. Just taking a quick look at their physical condition and how early they’ve shown up to camp really indicates how hungry they are.”

When Epstein and Hoyer came to Chicago in 2011, they talked of developing a “Cubs way” of doing things, starting in the minor leagues. That seems to have evolved into “that’s Cub.”

It’s just who you are. There’s nothing contrived about somebody that’s authentic.

Rodon says he’s taking it easy, insists arm is fine

GLENDALE, Ariz. – Left-hander Carlos Rodon separated himself from the group of White Sox pitchers playing catch in an outfield Tuesday at Camelback Ranch, which raised an eyebrow or two. Rodon, who would later say his arm is fine and that he’s taking a slower approach to getting ready for the regular season – perhaps similar to the light-load tactic Chris Sale took during spring training last year – spent the time talking to Kirk Champion, the Sox’s director of minor league instruction, near home plate. When a group of pitchers

came over to take part in light fielding drills, Rodon joined in but didn’t use his left arm at all, not even for short flips.

“Everything’s normal. Everything’s good,’’ Rodon said. “We’re just taking our time, trying to figure out what the plan is here for the long term. Workload is going to be a little more this year. So we’re going to take it a little slow.’’

So there are no issues on the first day of spring training?

“No. Everything feels great,’’ Rodon said. “I’m just excited for this year.’’

Rodon threw a career-high 165 innings last season, his second in the majors, at least 35 shy of what he wants this season. With Sale gone and Jose Quin-

tana the subject of trade rumors, he’ll be needed to carry more weight.

“I want to be one of those [200-inning] guys like Quintana and Sale,’’ Rodon said. “I’m expected to do that, and hopefully I’ll live up to that.’’

Asked when he will throw, Rodon said, “I think Friday. So we’ll see.’’

“There are certain guys we’re going to be measuring in terms of their work,’’ manager Rick Renteria said, “and as soon as we get that structured out there in the longer format, we’ll get them out there and do what we need them to do.’’

Renteria said Rodon is “one we keep measuring.”

CHICAGO – Doug McDermott scored 20 points, All-Star Jimmy Butler had 19 points and 12 assists in his return to the lineup, and the Bulls continued their mastery over the Toronto Raptors in a 105-94 victory on Tuesday night.

Taj Gibson had 14 points and Rajon Rondo added 12 to help the Bulls beat the Raptors for the 11th straight time.

Toronto’s last win in the series was Dec. 31, 2013.

The Bulls led by as many as 23 points and never trailed in the final three quarters to snap a three-game skid.

Kyle Lowry scored 22 points to lead the Raptors, who lost their third straight and fell one-half game behind idle Atlanta for the No. 4 seed in the Eastern Conference. DeMar DeRozan was limited to 18 points – 10 below his season average. He was whistled for his second technical foul in the final minute and ejected from the game.

Races now will consist of three stages, with championship implications in each stage.

The top 10 finishers of the first two stages will be awarded additional regular-season and championship points.

The winner of the first two stages of each race will receive one playoff point, and the race winner will receive five playoff points. Each playoff point will be added to his or her reset total after race No. 26, if that competitor makes the playoffs.

All playoff points will carry through to the end of the third round of the playoffs (Round of 8), with the Championship 4 racing straight up at Homestead-Miami Speedway for the title.

Championship points after the first two stages will be awarded on a descending scale, with the stage winner receiving 10 points, second receiving nine and so on.

The race winner after the final stage will receive 40 points, second place will receive 35, third place 34, fourth place 33 and so on.

“Simply put, this will make our great racing even better,” said Brian France, NASCAR chairman and CEO. “I’m proud of the unprecedented collaboration from our industry stakeholders, each of whom had a common goal – strengthening the sport for our fans. This is an enhancement fully rooted in teamwork, and the result will be an even better product every single week.”

In addition to the overall change in the competition format, NASCAR announced a playoff bonus structure that will be introduced first at Chicagoland Speedway. The regular-season points leader will be honored as the regular-season champion earning 15 playoff points that will be added to the driver’s playoff reset of 2,000. The top 10 drivers in points heading into the playoffs also will receive playoff points, with second place receiving 10, third place eight, fourth place seven and so on. All playoff points will carry through to the end of the Round of 8.

The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race at Chicagoland Speedway is scheduled Sept. 17 as part of its four-race weekend. The ARCA Racing Series will run Thursday night, the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series will be under the lights on Friday, and the NASCAR Xfinity Series on Saturday will precede Sunday’s Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race.

Hamburgerseria: Recovering the tradition of gourmet burgers in Joliet MYSTERY DINER After a long day of work, two friends and I decided to meet at Hamburgerseria in Joliet one hour before closing.

I expected noisy and bustling, which I thought would jar my mentally tired brain. Instead, although the dining room had plenty of customers, the atmosphere felt mellow. I immediately felt my mind unwind in the dim light and I knew we picked the right place.

Despite our late arrival, the server gave us plenty of time to wake up over coffee and pop in order to scan the menus and place our orders. I’d been intrigued about this place ever since it opened, but never had the opportunity to stop and try the item I’d mentally bookmarked: the Chihuahua-style hot dog.

Yes, I was at a gourmet hamburger joint and I was going to order a hot dog. And not just any hot dog, but one that was deep fried, wrapped with bacon and doused with sour cream and avocado. I held the avocado and forged ahead.

But first things first. And for starters, the three of us split an order of six beer-battered chicken tenders, served with ranch and barbecue sauce. Two of us have a childlike love for chicken tenders, and these were so flavorful and juicy, we skipped the sauce.

BTW, the portions were huge. A double order of tenders with sides would have made a meal for us three.

Speaking of sides, we mixed and matched. One ordered onion rings, another homemade potato chips and the third, homemade French fries, which we divvied up among our entrées.

We agreed the onion rings were the best, great taste and the perfect amount of crunch in the batter. Although the chips and fries were good, we felt the chips could have been saltier and the fries crispier.

The Chihuahua dog was worth the wait, a heavenly, unhealthy flavorful meld of the dog, the bacon and the sour cream, which made me wish I’d ordered two.

The American cheeseburger was served with the classic combination of iceberg lettuce, tomatoes, onions and pickles. My friend ordered it medium well, and it came out that way and juicy besides.

The breakfast burger arrived topped with American cheese, hard fried egg and bacon. I was a little surprised this person ordered it due to a dislike of eggs. But in this case, my friend felt the egg complemented the burger, which was ordered medium and came out medium.

Burger variations for the adventurous include French (brie cheese and cranberries), Greek (feta cheese and olives), Italiano (Fresh mozzarella cheese, roasted red peppers and marinara sauce), Latino (Cheddar cheese, jalapeños, guacamole and sour cream) and that ain’t all. The sky’s almost the limit in gourmet twists on the traditional burger.

Hamburgerseria, name notwithstanding, also offers a variety of other

Burger price range is between $5 and $12.50.

Would I go back? Yes.

Know effects of taking PPIs Dear Doctor: Because I had an ulcer, three years ago a doctor wrote me a prescription for Prilosec and told me I had to take it for the rest of my life. But lately, articles in the newspaper have seemed to contradict his thinking, suggesting that Prilosec and similar medicines can cause heart problems. What’s your opinion?

Dear Reader: Prilosec is one of many proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) that include Prevacid, Aciphex, Protonix, Nexium and Dexilant.

These drugs work by blocking the formation of hydrogen chloride in the stomach. This very strong acid is necessary to break down proteins so they can be absorbed by the small intestine.

I don’t know the specifics about the causes of your stomach ulcer – the size, the depth, whether it was a bleeding ulcer or caused by aspirin or other anti-inflammatory medications – but I do agree with your doctor that a proton pump inhibitor would be necessary for the healing of the ulcer. These drugs decrease the acidity of your upper gastrointestinal tract, allowing for an ulcer to heal. The normal duration for treatment is from two to 12 weeks.

In some circumstances, a PPI needs to be continued indefinitely, such as when an ulcer doesn’t heal, when an older patient has an ulcer that’s larger than 2 centimeters, or when a patient has three or more ulcers per year.

People with recurrent acid reflux also need to be on prolonged courses of proton pump inhibitors.

While there are benefits to these medications, there also are downsides. Any drug that changes the normal physiological process of the body can have unintended consequences, and PPIs are no exception. With prolonged use, the decreased formation of hydrogen chloride in the stomach can decrease calcium absorption and bone strengthening, increasing the risk of osteoporosis. Prolonged use can also reduce the absorption of magnesium and B12, and increase the risk of intestinal infections, such as those caused by Clostridium

difficile, leading to severe diarrhea.

As for your specific question about proton pump inhibitors and heart disease, a 2014 study published in the International Journal of Cardiology compared more than 126,000 people who took PPIs with an equal number who didn’t. After 120 days, researchers found a 58 percent increase in the risk of heart attacks among those who took them. The biggest problem with this study is that the authors couldn’t assess whether those in the study smoked cigarettes, were obese or had a family history of heart disease. A 2015 study published in the journal PLOS One analyzed large amounts of data both from people who used PPIs for gastroesophageal reflux and those who didn’t. In this study, researchers found a 16 percent increase in the rate of heart attacks among those who took PPIs. Finally, an analysis of 11 studies -- with a total of more than 84,000 patients -- looked at use of proton pump inhibitors in people taking the blood thinner Plavix after having an angioplasty.

The authors found a 37 percent increase in the rate of heart events among those taking the proton pump inhibitor Clopidogrel with Plavix and those taking just Plavix, but they found no difference in death rates. The findings suggest that PPIs decrease the ability of a blood thinner, like Plavix, to work.

Your worry about taking Prilosec for the rest of your life is understandable, but you’re probably on the drug for a good reason. Just know that there can be long-term side effects, and be aware of them. You can also ask your doctor to keep you apprised of any new research on long-term use of PPIs.

Can you help me? – Heartbroken in New Mexico Dear Heartbroken: Your husband may not be having an affair in the physical sense, but he IS having an emotional affair. He may be flattered by the attention he’s receiving from a younger woman, or he may think he’s actually in love with her. Whether she is in love with him is open to question.

However, if your husband is giving her money, you might have an argument he is being manipulated into it, which could qualify as elder abuse. Remember, too, if you are a longtime wife in a community property state, half of the assets acquired during your marriage are yours.

If he doesn’t agree to end the relationship, this is something you might want to discuss with a lawyer.

Dear Abby: My 7-year-old daughter, “Jessie,” has a best friend who lives next door. The neighbor, “Laurie,” has an older brother, “Jason,” who is 13.

Recently, Jessie played at Laurie’s house, and when she came home she told me Jason had said some nasty things to her. When I asked what they were, she told me that one time Jason told her to pull down her underwear, and another time he told her to pull down his pants and do something that can’t be mentioned in a family newspaper.

When I heard it, I was livid. I told his mother about it, and now she will not let my daughter play with Laurie. She believes Jessie made it all up. My daughter is inconsolable because she no longer has a playmate. She believes it is her fault Laurie can’t play with her because she told me. I don’t know what to do so the girls can play together. – Needs a Playmate Dear Needs: It is important that you make Jessie understand that none of this was her fault – it was Jason’s fault – and she did the right thing by telling you. What you need to do now is help your daughter find other playmates, preferably some whose parents supervise when children play in their home.

While Jason’s mother may not want to believe what her son did, it’s highly unlikely your daughter made it up. Dealing with a problem like that by putting her head in the sand only will invite more trouble, because Jason is sure to repeat it with some other little girl.

Dear Abby: Today, I called my church to cancel my attendance at a retreat a month from now. I had paid $25 to hold my spot. When I stated my reason for calling, the church secretary said, “Do you want a refund or would you like to donate toward tithes?” I thought this was nervy. I told her to refund the money. What is your thought on this? – Wants a Refund in Brentwood, Calif.
