Plainfield’s monthly Green Village Series buzzes with bee facts

mmallory@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – A small group of Plainfield residents convened at the Plainfield Public Library on Monday night looking to learn more about bees.

They left with more knowledge and with a craving for real honey, as they bought some before leaving.

Tammy Smith Talbot, of Smith Talbot Apiaries in Naperville, gave a presentation to about 15 people. It was full of facts about bees, honey and tips to start your own beehive. Smith Talbot produces thousands of pounds of honey a year.

The presentation was part of the Green Village Series – a partnership between the library and the village of Plainfield to provide the community with environmentally friendly programs. They are offered once a month at the library, located in downtown Plainfield.

Some of the facts about bees were dark.

Honey bees are almost on the endan-

gered species list, Smith Talbot said. And no one is really sure why colonies of bees collapse.

“If you could figure out colony collapse disease, you’ll be set for life,” she said to the audience.

There were grim details about life inside a beehive.

“Two queens will fight to the death,” Smith Talbot said.

Not only that, a hive will kill a queen if they do not like her. The queen lays between 1,500 to 2,500 eggs a day and will take a couple of weeks to hatch the bees. The average life span of a bee during the summer is 28 days.

“They literally work themselves to death,” Smith Talbot said.

As soon as the sun hits the hive in the morning to warm them up, they begin working and won’t return until the sun goes down.

The only time they’ll reconsider is when a storm is coming. They’ll be inside the hive ahead of the storm. That’s one way

for a beekeeper to know a storm is coming if they haven’t seen the forecast.

Speaking of weather, Smith Talbot said beekeepers in the area are concerned that the mild winter has thrown off the hives the past few months. She was hoping for colder weather the next month or so.

But some of the facts were more positive. In many cases, real honey is known to help treat allergies, prevent colds and improve skin. Smith Talbot said a friend of hers has a teaspoon full each day and no longer experiences pollen-related allergies.

And if you’ve ever wondered why beekeepers wear white, it’s because predators to hives – such as bears, skunks and raccoons – are dark.

After having a taste of the real honey Smith Talbot brought, most attendees bought bottles of the honey in various sizes: one pound, three pounds and five pounds. Some said they were hoping to help with their allergies while others said they may cook with it or include it in coffee or breakfast items.

Plainfield Central High School helps students with anxiety, positive feedback

fsarver@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – The Plainfield District 202 board learned of several initiatives at Plainfield Central High School that are making it more positive and encouraging to students.

At Monday’s board meeting, Central Principal Dave Stephens talked to the board not only of the high academic achievement, but also of activities that further assist students, such as the Reconnection Room, college field trips and a new initiative called positive Friday.

“Those are the real things that are going on every day in our schools and really make a difference with the kids,” said Stephens, who became the new principal of the high school this year.

students who feel anxiety and Stephens said it is used by 28 of 30 hospitalized students to help them transition back to high school.

“As you know, we have many, many students who feel [anxiety]. Sometimes we have administrators that need to go down there and sit down. Occasionally I’ll go down there and sit,” he said.

The high school also has held field trips to Northern Illinois University and Joliet Junior College to get students to think more about their future, he said.

“The kids can see different options that they might have or might take advantage somewhere down the road,” Stephens said.

Plainfield East and North high school choir students plan to attend the National American Choral Directors Association in Minneapolis in March.

Female high school students at Plainfield East who wish to major the field of science, technology, engineering or mathematics plan to attend the Girls Advancing in STEM conference at Stanford University in California in April.

Plainfield Central band students plan to travel to Orlando for the Thanksgiving Parade of Bands in November, while Plainfield East band and choir students will travel to the same location in 2018 for a music department trip.

‘FULL-STEAM AHEAD’ Joliet mayor Bob O’Dekirk says developments are ‘coming fast’ on project at I-55 and I-80

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Cullinan Properties is looking at construction next year and a fall 2019 opening for Rock Run Crossings, a lifestyle development that would combine retail, entertainment, office space, hotels and homes on a site at Interstates 55 and 80.

The city has been trying to develop the site for nearly 10 years because of its high exposure from two cross-country interstates. But there is no interstate access, something that has to be overcome before development.

Joliet Mayor Bob O’Dekirk at his annual State of the City address Monday announced that the state “is set to make a major commitment” that will provide interstate access to the site.

O’Dekirk said the 265-acre project will have regional reach and be an economic engine, creating 5,000 permanent jobs and 8,000 construction jobs.

“It will have an economic impact of $1.4 billion,” O’Dekirk said, adding that developments are now moving quickly. “City Council, get ready. It’s coming, and it’s going to be coming fast.”

He said representatives from Cullinan will make a presentation on the project at a City Council meeting either

this month or in March.

Anaise Berry, director of marketing, said Cullinan expects to formally apply to the city for approval of the project by the end of April.

“We are moving full-steam ahead,” Berry said.

The plan is to begin construction on Rock Run Crossings in 2018 and begin opening in fall 2019, she said.

The Cullinan website, which promotes the Rock Run Crossings development, notes traffic counts of 235,000 vehicles passing the site every day.

East Peoria-based Cullinan acquired the northeast section of the interchange in July 2015. But development always hinged on getting interstate access.

Cullinan had not previously publicly announced a development timetable.

JOLIET – Mayor Bob O’Dekirk’s main message Monday was that Joliet is growing.

O’Dekirk cited double- and triple-digit increases in housing starts and commercial development in 2016 during his annual State of the City speech.

It also was the first year in which the equalized assessed valuation of Joliet – the total taxable value of property in the city – increased since 2009, he said.

“The fact that property values are finally increasing in Joliet is a great feat,” O’Dekirk told his audience at a luncheon held by the Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce & Industry.

O’Dekirk said the city is shaking itself out of the post-recession doldrums, a development that has become apparent as Amazon, Mars, Whirlpool and other developers have brought industrial projects to Joliet.

But the 263 residential building permits in 2016 also were a 46 percent increase from the previous year, he said. Commercial building permits for 438,500 square feet reflected a 246 percent increase.

Property development last year totaled $438 million, a 47 percent increase from 2015, O’Dekirk said “The city of Joliet is growing,” O’Dekirk said. “As we know, the city was hit hard in 2008 after the recession. And, the recovery lagged, but it is here in Joliet.

And, the city is growing. That’s the trend we’re going to see moving forward.”

O’Dekirk later announced that the city has received a major commitment from the state to provide interstate access to the proposed Rock Run Crossings project at Interstates 55 and 80. The 265-acre project will have a $1.4 billion economic impact, the mayor said.

“This is a development that is going to have a regional impact,” he said.

Another interchange would mark the second commitment from the state in two years, which signed off on funding for an improved Houbolt Road interchange last year.

’90s sweethearts reconnect and get engaged More online

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – They were Joliet Central High School sweethearts who went separate ways but now are engaged to be married after an elaborate proposal that stirred feelings from high school days in the 1990s.

Naurice Moffett and Nicole Graves – both class of 1999 – are newly engaged for Valentine’s Day. It may have been a long time coming.

So was the end of the scavenger hunt that Naurice concocted for his proposal.

Nicole was driven in a limousine by a chauffeur to seven places from New Lenox to Joliet and Bolingbrook and back again to Joliet – blindfolded for the final leg of the journey – picking up clues along the way and suspecting all along.

“I’m thinking, how many more places am I going to go to?” Nicole said. “I’m thinking this is fun, but where is he? I’m hoping there’s a proposal at the end.”

Nicole and Naurice were interviewed last week at Joliet Central, where they first met.

Nicole said she had been thinking of marriage with Naurice even back then, although she did not tell him so.

Naurice was not so committed as they both headed off to college in different states.

“We dated off and on in high school and college – a little bit in our adult life,” Naurice said. “We had a little bit of a falling out, and we didn’t talk for two or three years.”

In October 2015, Naurice began to think about what he had missed.

“I wanted to get back together to see if I missed out on my wife,” he said.

“Did I let my good thing pass me by?”

By that time, Nicole said, “It was at a point where I was just kind of over it.”

Naurice called for a date but was rejected – for months.

It was not until Jan. 31, 2016, that they went out on a date again.

Nicole is a dentist in New Lenox.

Her last patient Jan. 31 had been sent

by Naurice to deliver a message. Nicole was handed a note that supposedly was from the patient’s previous dentist. Instead, it was the first clue on a scavenger hunt that was disguised as a guide to a special dinner to celebrate the anniversary of their getting together again a year ago.

The first clue sent Nicole to Joliet Central, where, Naurice’s message read, “21 years ago you looked at me and thought I was a teacher’s pet.”

She did think so and still does, Nicole said. But it was due in large part to Naurice’s friendly personality.

“He was really outgoing. I’m the shy one,” Nicole said.

Naurice now works at Joliet West High School, where he is an in-school supervisor. He said back then, he was a little shy of Nicole.

“Once I found out she liked me, I flirted more,” he said.

The second clue took Nicole to the nearby Burger King where the two of them would go after school for Hershey’s pie.

The third sent Nicole to the parking lot at Oak Valley Elementary School, across the street from Nicole’s girlhood home, where the two of them would meet.

Next, Nicole was taken to Naurice’s boyhood home, “where my mom showed you how to bake cookies,” the note read. “It’s the place where we had our first major fight.”

Then, it was off to the Red Lobster by the Louis Joliet Mall and then iPic Theaters in Bolingbrook – both favorite dat-

ing places. At iPic, a jigsaw puzzle was awaiting Nicole, which she assembled for the final message before being blindfolded and told she would be driven to Chicago for their anniversary dinner.

But Nicole could tell that wasn’t where they were going, and she wasn’t really surprised when she was led to the place where Naurice was waiting on bended knee – her home in Joliet. Her father had been cleaning the house too thoroughly for no good reason, Nicole said, and she knew something was up.

She was not too surprised but very happy, Nicole said, as the two talked about the proposal scheme and reminisced about teenage days at Joliet Central.

“If it wasn’t for this place ...,” Naurice said, thinking about how to finish the sentence.

Nicole did it for him: “You’d be a lost soul.”

Rialto slates special meeting on VenuWorks, $600,000 loan

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Rialto Square Theatre board will hold a special meeting at 4 p.m. Thursday to vote on a contract with VenuWorks and take actions that could lead to a $600,000 loan from its foundation to cover old bills.

VenuWorks is now operating on a three-month agreement through

March to manage the Rialto.

The new contract would provide a five-year agreement but allow the Rialto to end the agreement after three years.

“After three years, if we don’t want to work with them any longer, we can walk away,” Rialto board Chairman Robert Filotto said.

The city of Joliet has required at least a one-year deal with a manage-

ment company before releasing the first installment of $500,000 in funding for the Rialto in 2017. The city will provide $250,000 after the VenuWorks contract is approved and the other $250,000 on July 1.

The city funding was requested to cover a projected $500,000 budget deficit in 2017.

The Rialto, meanwhile, also is trying to pay off a backlog of bills that was

at $597,000 in late January.

The Rialto Square Theatre Foundation, the fundraising arm of the theater, would need to get court approval to release $600,000 from its endowment fund to pay the bills.

The board on Thursday will consider resolutions to file a court petition seeking approval of the loan and a loan agreement with the foundation not to exceed $600,000.

Lockport Township vet who perished at Pearl Harbor finally identified

mmallory@shawmedia.com CREST HILL – A veteran from the Joliet area will finally rest in peace later this year, more than 75 years after his death.

Fireman 1st Class Michael Galajdik of the U.S. Navy was on the USS Oklahoma in December 1941 when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor and killed more than 2,300 Americans.

Galajdik, who grew up in Lockport Township, was one of hundreds recovered but never positively identified. He and others were exhumed a series of times in attempts to identify the fallen over the years as DNA technology improved, but the efforts to identify him were unsuccessful.

But Crest Hill resident George Sternisha got news recently that brings decades of uncertainty about his uncle to an end.

“Last week, I got a call from the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command,” Sternisha said. “I asked if they made a positive ID on my uncle, and they said, ‘Yes, we did.’ ” “I got goosebumps when they told

“It’s simply amazing what they can do with DNA,” he said, noting that he submitted his own DNA to officials and attended a detailed meeting years ago to learn about the DNA matching process.

Depending on how long processing takes, Sternisha hopes to have his uncle buried at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood as soon as April or as late as June, with a service at the Cathedral of St. Raymond Nonnatus in Joliet. Galajdik’s remains still are in Hawaii.

Sternisha, who was born after his uncle died, remembers his mother tearing up talking about the family’s loss and never finding true closure.

“I could understand what she was going through,” he said.

Sternisha will write a eulogy for Galajdik, whom he still calls “Uncle Mike.”

“This is what my mother wanted all her life,” said Sternisha, a Marine who was injured in the Vietnam War. “She was the closest to him.”

“Now, we’ll bring him back and have a full military funeral,” he said.

The HERALD–NEWS PLAINFIELD – A fire over the weekend caused thousands of dollars in damage to a Plainfield home.

The Plainfield Fire Protection District responded to a call for a house fire at 6:36 p.m. Saturday in the 11000 block of Glenbrook Circle, according to a district news release.

The fire was brought under control at 7 p.m. No one was home at the time of the fire, which started in the kitchen area. The fire was contained to the kitchen area with some smoke and water damage in other parts of the home.

Damage is estimated at $100,000, the news release stated. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Assistance in fighting the fire was provided by the Naperville and Bolingbrook fire departments and the Oswego Fire Protection District. Station coverage during the fire for additional calls was provided by agencies from Minooka, Romeoville, Lockport Township and Aurora Township.

Pedestrian tunnels closed for work at Joliet train station

JOLIET – As part of the continued work on the Joliet Gateway Center transportation campus, pedestrian tunnels near the train station are being closed in phases for construction, according to a city of Joliet news release.

For Phase I, the New Street pedestrian tunnel is closed daily as of Feb. 13. Work begins after 8:30 a.m. and the tunnel reopens by 4:30 p.m. each day. This will continue for about three days. For Phase 2, upon completion of Phase I work and the reopening of the New Street pedestrian tunnel, the Union Station pedestrian tunnel will be closed. This work is estimated to be completed by Feb. 24. The sidewalk on the west side of Mayor Art Schultz Drive will also be out of service during this work.

Northbound Mayor Art Schultz Drive will be maintained for continuous access to the Metra ticket trailer and parking area.

Federal Jury Awards $5.2 Million Following Semi-Truck Accident SPONSORED BY

On January 24, 2017, a Chicago federal jury unanimously agreed to award a couple $5.2 million in total for their injuries sustained after the trailer of a semi-truck operated by New Prime, Inc. dislodged and struck their vehicle.

“Both verdicts are substantial,” commented John L. Kirkton of the Illinois Jury Verdict Reporter, a division of the Law Bulletin Publishing Company.

On January 20, 2012, the couple was traveling southbound on Interstate 57 near Effingham, IL. Traffic had slowed to a standstill, as crews up ahead worked to clear an earlier accident involving a semi-truck. While the couple sat in their car waiting for traffic to clear, a New Prime, Inc. freightliner truck barreled around the bend at 65 mph.

The New Prime, Inc. driver slammed on the brakes.

“New Prime’s tanker was carrying a load of vegetable oil pushing 50,000 pounds,” stated Michael T. Wierzbicki, Jr., a partner

at Horwitz, Horwitz & Associates who focuses on commercial and transportation trucking litigation and represented the couple.

“Because of the size and weight, in particular, it’s much more difficult to stop. It takes a longer time and longer distances and becomes much more difficult to maneuver,” added Thomas A. Kelliher, an associate at Horwitz who also represented the plaintiffs.

JOLIET – Phones will ring Tuesday with invitations to join the Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce & Industry.

The chamber is starting a three-day membership drive at 8:30 a.m.

“We want to continue to grow the chamber. That’s our goal,” chamber President Mary Jaworski said. “The more people and the bigger voice we have, the more we can do.”

The chamber has 1,100 members now.

Chamber volunteers will be making calls through 4 p.m. Thursday to recruit new members, chamber Vice President Mike Paone said.

“This is a large-scale drive where we’re going to have nearly 150 volunteers,” Paone said. “We’re asking that they reach out to their client list and vendors.”

It’s a bigger effort than the chamber typically mounts in its annual membership drive, Paone said. But the chamber has had similar membership drives, and the biggest effort recruited 220 members a few years ago, he said.

In addition to its advocacy efforts, Paone said, the chamber provides opportunities for members to make partnerships, advertise their goods and services, and network

with other business people and professionals in the community.

“There’s always something for everybody,” he said.

LOCAL BRIEFS Judge allows brothers charged with murder to attend funeral

JOLIET – A Will County judge allowed two brothers charged with murder to attend their parents’ funeral.

On Friday, Judge Dave Carlson allowed Blaique P. Morgan, 20, and Amari H. Morgan, 18, to attend the funeral of their parents, Blaique P. Patrick Morgan, 49, and Morgan Angel Morgan, 42, who died Feb. 5 in an apparent murder-suicide at their Joliet home, Will County State’s Attorney’s Office spokesman Charles Pelkie said.

Amari H. Blaique and Amari Morgan Morgan have been in the Will County Jail since shortly after the Jan. 7, 2016, slaying of their then-next-door neighbor, Robert J. Bielec, 62.

The brothers allegedly struck Bielec with a pipe or crowbar after an argument over comments Bielec made regarding their sister.

The Morgans and Bielec were living in the 1700 block of Houston Avenue in Joliet Township at the time.

Joliet police found Patrick and Angel Morgan dead inside their residence in the 400 block of Bluff Street and their investigation indicated it was a murder-suicide.

Autopsies revealed Patrick Morgan suffered a single gunshot wound and Angel Morgan had been shot multiple times.

A joint service for the couple was held Monday at Mount Zion Baptist Church in Joliet.

Plainfield student arrested on bomb threat charge

PLAINFIELD – A Plainfield North High School student was arrested by police after allegedly making a bomb threat.

Nathaniel Graves, 18, of the 24300 block of West Crabtree Court in Plainfield, was arrested by Plainfield police Friday on Nathaniel charges of posing a threat Graves to a school building and person, giving a false bomb and gas alarm and making a false report to a public safety agency, according to Will County Jail records.

Plainfield Police Sgt. Mike Fisher said that on Feb. 2 Graves allegedly wanted to speak with a school resource officer,

indicating he found a note in a bathroom regarding a bomb threat to the school.

Through interviews, the school resource officer determined Graves was the author of the note, Fisher said. He said North high school was not in any kind of danger and the school staff took proper safety precautions. Graves was later arrested by police at Plainfield Academy and sent to Will County Jail, Fisher said.

In an email, Tom Hernandez, Plainfield School District 202 spokesman, stated “appropriate disciplinary action was taken” against Graves by the district.

Herron was sentenced Oct. 26, 2016, to two years in prison for aggravated battery in a public place after being arrested by Joliet police and charged in July. According to court records, the offense date for the new charges is July 25, 2016 – the same as that of the arrest on aggravated battery charges for which Herron has already been sentenced.

Herron is serving his time at the Vienna Correctional Center in Vienna, with a projected parole date of July 25, according to the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Joliet convict charged with attempted murder

Woman dies after crash in Green Garden Township

JOLIET – A Joliet convict faced new charges Friday, including attempted murder.

Devon I. Herron, 21, of the 100 block of Arch Court, was charged with attempted murder, possession of a firearm by a felon, aggravated battery Devon I. with a deadly weapon, Herron aggravated battery causing great bodily harm and aggravated battery in a public place, according to Will County court records.

A 62-year-old Manteno resident was pronounced dead at 10:42 p.m. Sunday at Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox.

Laura L. Phelps was the passenger in a vehicle involved in a crash Wednesday at the intersection of Route 45 and West Dralle Road, according to the Will County Coroner’s Office.

The intersection is located south of Frankfort in Green Garden Township.

Illinois State Police District 5 is investigating the crash to determine final cause and manner of death.

The state is in the process of awarding a contract to an engineering firm that would begin planning an interchange providing access from I-55, Joliet Economic Development Director Steve Jones said.

Jones said city and state officials will meet this week to discuss an intergovernmental agreement for not only the interchange, but also improvements of local roads leading to the site.

“The impacts of this are much greater than the interstates,” Jones said.

The state will pay for the $90 million interchange, Jones said. The city will be responsible for some $60 million in funding for improving local roads. He said the city is pursuing federal grants to help with the funding.

A spokeswoman for the Illinois Department of Transportation could not be reached Monday for comment.

Local roads that would be improved or expanded to provide access to the site include Olympic Boulevard and County Farm Road.

“It’s a huge thing that’s being put together,” O’Dekirk said, when interviewed after his speech. “It’s a city project, but it’s going to have a regional impact.”

Cullinan bought the site from California-based O & S Holdings, which had planned a similar project called Bridge Street Town Centre.

The O & S project was proposed in late 2007, just months ahead of a recession that devastated real estate markets and put a halt to retail development.

The plan never developed, and the city at one point considered putting warehousing on the site.

Bausano, nee Gerlt, age 77, of Joliet, passed away peacefully Saturday February 11, 2017 at Park Pointe Healthcare and Rehab Center in Morris, Illinois, where she spent the last part of her life enjoying bingo and socializing with the many friends she made there.

Born on May 1, 1939 in Staunton, Illinois, she was the daughter of the late Roland and Isabella (Nee Anderson) Gerlt-Bollini. Donna and her husband Bob owned Armando’s Bar in Crest Hill, in the early ’80s. Donna also worked as a probate clerk at Cook County in Chicago from the late ’80s until her retirement in 2006 when she returned back to Joliet.

Left to cherish many loving memories are her children, Susan (Ken) Watson of

Corporation. He enjoyed carpentry and especially spending his time outdoors doing the yard work.

Preceded in death by his loving wife, Dorothy (nee Harsnett) (2003); and his parents, including his stepfather, Oscar Bleau.

Jack Baker, 84, passed away peacefully on February 6th at 7 a.m. at Boulder Manor Care.

Jack was an avid sportsman, an athlete who ran his remodeling business, Baker Remodelers Inc. for 50 years.

He officiated football for eight leagues including Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, Big 8, WAC, WFL, IPFL, Big Sky, 10 Division 1A Bowl Games and was one of the first nine original Officials for Arena Football.

Jack was a championship racquetball player, he won three state and three regional championships in the 50-55-year-olds division.

He played on 11 Colorado State International Softball Congress title teams, through out the summer putting fastpitch softball on the map for Colorado and putting him in the Colorado Softball Hall of Fame.

Jack is survived by his wife, Mary Sue Baker; daughters, Robin and (Carlos) Martinez of Orange, CA, Erin and (David) Ulrich of Boulder, Colorado; son, Scott and (Cathey) Baker of Platteville, Colorado; grandchildren, Erika and (Iain) McHenry of Longmont, Colorado, Chelsea Kochevar of Silverdale, WA; great-grandchildren, Grace and Gavin McHenry of Longmont, CO; stepdaughters, Karie and (Sven) Hedenas of Boulder, CO and Nancy Kerner of Boulder, CO. JAMES A. MARTIN Born: July 11, 1998, Died: January 31, 2017

James Andrew Martin, on January 31, 2017, escaped this mortal realm after six-thousand, seven hundred, and nine days. In the words of Hunter S. Thompson, “There he goes. One of God’s own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.”

He began his game of life set to the highest difficulty level, with no saves, on July 11, 1998, in Sacile, Italy, and has since been a force to be reckoned with, that simply could not be contained.

James proudly received his high school diploma from Glen Oaks Therapeutic Day School, where the staff provided the support and acceptance he needed, and where he founded his greatest friendships. He was a freshman at Joliet Junior College, or as he called it, “the never-ending chore known as morning college.”

While James may not have lived a long life, it’ll never change the fact that he was so full of life and character. He loved video games, the internet, comedy, anime, and horror movies (the gorier the better). He loved dank memes. He was able to find the Lamb Sauce, when God wasn’t able to. He knew that Shrek was love, Shrek was life. Follow his wisdom: make memes, not war.

He was overflowing with creativity and loved to draw, write, create digital art, and build medieval weapons out of whatever he could get his hands on.

He had mad cooking skills and loved to eat. His favorite was devouring the unborn (eating eggs).

One of his proudest moments was finishing the 4 lb. burger at R Place in 30 minutes.

He will be remembered for his unique sense of humor, sharp-tongued wit, masterful use of puns, and his ability to make others laugh inappropriately at every chance. Because of his love of pranks, local businesses may remember him as that guy in the horse mask, or the zombie clawing at their windows. Others may remember the snowman scenes he re-created from Calvin and Hobbes. The world will be a little less fun without him.

James could be fierce and unrelenting in the midst of his struggles, yet just as intensely he enjoyed life and happiness. In his words, YOLO! While sometimes shrouded by his rambunctiousness, those who loved him knew his underlying quiet, gentle way and his kindness.

Over the years, James expressed many wishes in the event of his death. He wished to have a tombstone engraved with wildly inappropriate but hilarious text, topped with a sculpture of his extended middle finger. He wished to be cremated, except for his skull, which he wanted displayed prominently on a mantelpiece. He wished to be rocketed into space and destroyed in a glorious explosion. He wanted someone to dress up like the Grim Reaper at his funeral and just stand there quietly. If you asked him if he wanted to be buried in a coffin, he’d tell you “that’s the last thing I need.” Indecision prevailed – a small gathering of immediate family gathered

to remember him, and a rocket will be launched in his name.

All who knew him and loved him are encouraged to drink a liter of Diet Coke in his honor. He will be greatly missed.

JIM McCLEAN

Born: February 26, 1945; in Chicago, IL Died: February 11, 2017; in Braceville, IL Jim McClean, age 71, of Braceville and formerly of Joliet, passed away peacefully at home Saturday evening, February 11, 2017.

Born February 26, 1945 in Chicago, James Elliott was a son of the late George and Edna (Gorski) McClean. Jim grew up in Summit and Charleston before moving with his family to Joliet at the age of eight. He was a graduate of Joliet Township High School with the class of 1963. Jim’s main passion was racing and in May of 1966 he began racing midget cars at Joliet Memorial Stadium.

Throughout his racing career he set numerous track records, had over 100 wins and was inducted into the Mazon Speed Bowl / Grundy County Hall of Fame in 2004. Jim worked as a truck driver for Hoffman Transportation until retirement in 2011. He was a member of the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing, The Miller/ Offenhauser Historical Society and was active with the Mazon Speed Bowl.

Survivors include his two daughters, Suzette Costillo of Tinley Park and Ericka Wilson-Heaton of Sumpter, South Carolina; six grandchildren, Juan, Julian, Christian and Adrian Costillo and Jenna and T.J. Wilson; one sister-in-law, Janice McClean of Braceville; lifelong best friend and caregiver, Valerie Carter of Coal City; numerous nieces, nephews, and countless friends, including, Al (Sandra) Harris of Elwood, Bruce (Linda) Field of Lockport, Aaron (Helen) Willis of Coal City, Mickey Yeager of Joliet and Dick Lubbers of Midlothian. Born November 4, 1930 in Chicago, he was a graduate of Illinois Institute of Technology with a degree in chemical engineering. He began working for Blockson, which later became Olin Corporation. During his career with the company, he served as a project manager in Johannesburg, South Africa, was head of engineering for the Southwest Region in Lake Charles, LA, and retired as governmental affairs liaison.

Robert was a man committed to his family and his church. His devotion to his faith was exemplary. Bob also enjoyed playing french horn with the Joliet American Legion Band for many years.

Joan Marie Ptacek (nee Martin), age 82, of Wilmington, IL, passed away peacefully, Saturday, February 11, 2017 at her home.

Born December 31, 1934 in LaSalle, IL, Joan was the daughter of Joseph and Marie (nee Noonan) Martin. She was a 1952 graduate of Wilmington High School in Wilmington, IL. On May 4, 1957 she married George Ptacek. Joan was employed by the Ammunition Procurement and Supply Agency for 16 years and then worked for the Social Security Administration for 15 years, retiring in 1990. She was a member and secretary for the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. Joan was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church in Wilmington and served as secretary for the Council of Catholic Women. She was named Woman of the Year in 1996. Joanie enjoyed being with family and friends. She will always be remembered for her kind and generous heart, and her smile that would light up a room.

Survivors include her daughter, Diane Ptacek of Wilmington; sister, Rita Hiles of

Adam Francis Stockwell, age 55, of Joliet, passed away suddenly on Saturday, February 11, 2017 at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center.

For the past six years, Adam had relentlessly battled cancer and his determination to fight it was extraordinary.

Born April 29, 1961 in Blue Island, he was a graduate of Thornwood High School, where he was a standout athlete. He worked as a glazier in the construction trades and was a proud member of Glaziers Local #27, Lyons. He was a hard worker with an impeccable work ethic.

Adam’s love of the Chicago Cubs was only surpassed by his love of the game of golf.

He was very family-oriented and especially devoted to his parents. He was kind, and his willingness to help others was exceptional.

He lived a simple life and material things were not important to him. He enjoyed working with his hands, designing and completing carpentry projects and maintaining his beautiful yard. Work and family were most important to him. He was dearly loved by his family and will be greatly missed and never forgotten.

DECATUR – Two Illinois lawmakers have proposed a plan to offer tax credits to biotechnology businesses in hopes of boosting agricultural jobs in central Illinois.

The legislation, introduced by Republican state Sen. Chapin Rose of Mahomet and Democratic state Sen. Andy Manar of Bunker Hill, would provide incentives to produce and sell new renewable products made from biomass and other renewable sources, the Decatur Herald & Review reported.

Manar said the state is strategically poised to lead the development of new renewable products.

“We have leading biotechnology companies, large and small, that are leading research and development efforts on these innovative products, and we have critical mass in infrastructure to produce and transport these renewables around the world,” Manar said.

Rose said there’s potential for Decatur to be at the center of a new $20 billion biotechnology industry. He said the intent is to use Decatur’s

manufactured products made from bio-based molecules of biomass feedstocks. Those products, including renewable chemicals and food additives, represent the next generation of advanced biofuels.

“These new bio-based products offer great potential to the Illinois economy across the entire state,” said Warren Ribley, president and CEO of Biotechnology Innovation Organization, which is among the organizations leading the efforts in Illinois.

“We need to lead now by leveraging our tremendous assets or forever be playing catch-up.”

The plan’s chances in the state Legislature are uncertain.

The officials who issued the hasty evacuation order defended their decision, saying it was necessary to ensure public safety in the region downstream from the nation’s tallest dam, about 150 miles northeast of San Francisco. Engineers spotted a hole in the spillway, which they feared could have failed within an hour.

The water level of the massive reservoir known as Lake Oroville dropped Monday, slightly easing fears of a catastrophic collapse.

But with more storms on the horizon, crews raced to assess what happened and began dumping large boulders and sandbags into the spillway to prevent any more erosion.

The acting head of the state’s Department of Water Resources said he did not know if anything had gone wrong and was unaware of a 2005 report that recommended fortifying the earthen emergency spillway with concrete for just such an event. The spillway had

never been used in the dam’s nearly 50 years of operation, and it was not near capacity when it began to fail.

“I’m not sure anything went wrong,” Bill Croyle said. “This was a new, never-having-happened-before event.”

Croyle and the local sheriff sought to reassure the public that downstream communities were safe until water began spilling over the lake’s edge Sunday and a chocolate-colored torrent of water began chewing through the slope below it.

The state’s Department of Water Resources had said conditions were stable at noon and then tweeted an evacuation warning at 4:45 p.m. of a possible failure within the hour, saying “this is not a drill.”

Chaos ensued as anxious residents rushed to pack up their families and abandon several communities in Butte, Yuba and Sutter Counties. The area in the northern Central Valley is known mainly for agriculture, which is fed by dammed-up rivers that spill down from the Sierra Nevada foothills nearby.

It took some people seven hours to travel to evacuation centers that should have been an hour away, said Chico Councilman Andrew Coolidge, who visited with evacuees in packed shelters in his city.

Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea insisted the evacuation had been accomplished in a “fairly timely fashion” and a “fairly orderly manner.”

SUN’s operations span 30 states east of the Mississippi, and management intends to open 35 to 40 new convenience stores each year.

SUN is the largest independent gas marketer in Hawaii and owns an extensive wholesale fuel distribution network there. The shares yield 11.17 percent, and a recent report by Credit Suisse is bullish on this $14 billion-revenue company, of which insiders own

28 percent.

Medical Properties Trust (MPW$12.74), a real estate investment trust, acquires, develops and invests in health care facilities and leases them to health care operators and providers.

MPW also provides mortgage loans and working capital to tenants and buyers. Its website says it “is prepared to provide up to 100 percent financing from $10 million to $1 billion for hospital acquisitions, facility expansions, sale-leasebacks and new developments including facility replacement. And physician participation is welcomed.”

Revenues for 2017 should grow by 20 percent, to $645 million, and the current 92-cent dividend, yielding 7.13 percent, is likely to be raised this year.

S&P Capital IQ has a “buy” rating on MPW, with a high target of $17, while Vanguard, BlackRock, Fidelity, State Street and Northern Trust own over 100 million shares. Over 70 percent of MPW is owned by six mutual funds!

Vodafone Group (VOD-$24.43) expects to record $57.4 billion in revenues this year, up from $56.1 billion last year. The earnings of this worldwide telecommunications company – which serves 465 million mobile phones, 13 million fixed broadband subscribers and 9.7 million TV customers – will improve to 94 cents a share this year, up from 71 cents in 2016. And aided by

its cloud and hosting services, its unified communications services and its M-Pesa mobile money transfer service, VOD expects to raise its $1.53 dividend, yielding 6.22 percent, to $1.61 in 2017.

The consensus on Wall Street has a price target between $38 and $41.

TICC Capital (TICC-$7.22) is a business development company and a wild-hare speculation with a $1.16 dividend yielding 16.2 percent. TICC invests between $5 million and $30 million in the equity and debt securities of technology-related ventures in smaller high-tech firms. And it seeks to exit these investments within six to eight years.

Earnings should increase from 45 cents a share last year to 52 cents this year, and there’s a high degree of probability that the dividend is safe this year, with some suggesting an increase in 2018. Meanwhile, Market Edge has a strong “buy” recommendation, and since May, CEO Jonathan Cohen and COO Saul Rosenthal have bought over 1 million shares for between $5 and $6 a share.

It’s important to remember that identity theft can happen to anyone regardless of age or financial situation.

Here are a few tips for reducing your vulnerability and keeping your personal information secure.

Look for abnormalities

Keeping a vigilant eye for anything out of the ordinary is a great practice to protect yourself against identity theft.

In fact, in a recent Morgan Stanley poll of high-net-worth investors, 81 percent say that, with changing technology, it is difficult to know how to best protect themselves from identity theft.

Take some time to learn about strategies for keeping your devices safe and your information secure. Knowing how to change passwords, set lock codes and use security programs may help reduce your overall vulnerability.

While identity theft is a constant risk, being extra diligent and always erring on the side of caution can help ensure that your personal and sensitive information does not end up in the wrong hands.

Gay USF linebacker free to do what he does best – help others

dgoss@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Kyle Kurdziolek has two years of eligibility remaining as a University of St. Francis linebacker.

Although nursing a torn labrum most of last season, he still played in all 11 games and made 45 tackles, fifth on the team. By all accounts, he is an ideal teammate.

He is an excellent student, sporting a 3.6 grade-point average on a 4.0 system as a criminal justice major, with emphasis on forensics and cyber security.

He lives by the principle that other people’s needs come before his own.

Always.

And he is gay. In fact, he is believed to be the only active college football player on any level who has come out.

His story was detailed by Erik Hall, a reporter who is a regular contributor to OutSports.com, a sports news website focusing on LGBT issues and personalities in amateur and professional sports. It can be seen at the OutSports. com website.

“I actually was going to the OutSports website to see about other athletes who had their stories published,”

said Kurdziolek, a former all-state linebacker at Streator High School. “I contacted Erik Hall and told him I would like to have my story told.

“I never looked at this to be about me, though. It was never meant for that. I always try to impact the community in a positive way. I tried to help others who are in a similar situation so they would be comfortable with who they are. I want to be an inspiration to others.”

COMING OUT

If it sounds as if telling his story was an easy decision for Kurdziolek, it was

anything but. The inner struggle lasted for years. Meanwhile, he concentrated all of his efforts on football and academics.

“I’ve known I was gay since middle school,” he said. “But I felt I had to suppress it. I’ve played football all my life.

Football is very masculine, and everyone conformed to that.”

It was last May, about nine months ago, when Kurdziolek told a few of his co-workers at Buckle (a clothing store at the Louis Joliet Mall), a few teammates who are close friends and his

That’s the same sort of reaction Kurdziolek has gotten from teammates and other supporters who have turned his life into a whirlwind since his story came out.

“The reaction I have received has been almost surreal, it’s been crazy,” he said. “It’s been a very heart-warming experience, all the support I have gotten from all walks of life. High school teammates and my teammates here at St. Francis, my coaches, close friends, family, everyone.”

Kurdziolek shares a house with four USF teammates.

“They’re all very supportive,” he said. “Not a lot of teammates in other places would support me like that. I have teammates who are very Catholic, and they support me, too.

“St. Francis as an academic institution is open to all walks of life no matter who you are.”

Mander has seen the positive reception from Kurdziolek’s teammates.

“The guys on the team have responded great,” he said. “Some are from backgrounds where they never experienced anything like that. But they know Kyle is still a great human being and an amazing friend. He definitely is what we want in our program.”

Michael Sam and a few others since Sam came out in 2014 notwithstanding, “you really don’t hear of this at all,” Mander said. “That’s one of the things that’s taboo within the football world. Even with how big LGBT is now, you still don’t hear about it in football.

“I didn’t realize at first that Kyle is the only active gay college football player who has come out across the nation.”

What his coaches at USF and his teammates are telling Kurdziolek is they are happy he is happy.

“He’s a great kid, prototypical of what St. Francis is all about,” Curry said. “He lives his life right. He does a great job in football and academically. I know he did struggle with it for years, and he told me how relieved he is to know he can live his life and still be a football player.

“On the field, he’s been a key guy for us the last couple of years. He filled in at the position Mike Passo played when he was battling injuries, and he was a force in there. He’ll keep doing that for us the next couple of years.”

Kurdziolek guarantees it.

“Football has been a part of my life since preschool,” he said. “My passion for the game has not changed one bit because my story has been told. I

still will attack practice drills, weight lifting and studying films the same as I ever have.

“I want to help lead our team to a conference championship in this season coming up. My personal goal is to earn all-conference and be a team player and a leader for my teammates, where they would look to me to be that for them.”

A GOOD PERSON

Kurdziolek had surgery in January for the torn labrum that hampered his 2016 season.

“It’s a bit of a setback, but come fall, I will be ready to go,” he said.

On the field and off.

“Kyle makes plays, he’s a good person and he represents our program very well,” Mander said.

Being a good person is something that cannot be omitted from any discussion about Kurdziolek.

“I always put other people before myself,” he said. “I’m a believer in God. I believe in a greater power, which has affected the way I lead my life. I live, first of all, to help others.

And like the Bible says, I pass no judgment on others.”

St. Francis Director of Athletics Dave Laketa said he is happy for Kurdziolek that he has found peace.

“I am so glad that Kyle no longer

has to fight his inner self and live in a world where he was trying to conform to the way that others in today’s society might have wanted him to be,” Laketa said. “Kyle can now be Kyle and not have to be someone else or feel guilty for who he is.

“This is a win-win for Kyle. He can now live his life free of a perceived burden, while at the same time helping other people – which he likes to do most – who face similar overbearing pressures brought on by our society today.

“Life is difficult enough these days.

Why add more internal pressure to oneself just to please others?”

Asked what the next chapter to his story may be, Kurdziolek said, “What I’d like to have happen now is just see where the story goes. I just want to be an advocate for LGBT athletes. I want to help break social norms. I feel now that this is just another step for the LGBT to be more accessible across the nation.

“Coach Mander said it best. Being a gay college football player is taboo.

Maybe I can help others overcome that who are in the situation I was in.”

That is what Kyle Kurdziolek wants more than anything else. He says helping others is the reason God put him in this world, and he does not intend to fail.

“I had kept it bottled up for so long,” he said. “Even when I came out just to immediate friends and family, I felt so much better.”

In November, shortly before his 21st birthday, he and USF linebackers coach and graduate assistant Josh Mander, a former standout linebacker at Joliet Catholic Academy and USF, were walking toward the library together.

“Kyle told me then that he was gay,” Mander said. “It was a very relaxed conversation. There really was nothing strange or unusual about it. I told him I will support you no matter what, I’ll help you succeed any way I can.

“But I didn’t realize at first how much he had struggled with it.”

Kurdziolek contacted USF head coach Joe Curry in December to let him know.

“I told him this is my first experience with an openly gay player, and I just want to make you happy and give you 100 percent support,” Curry said.

“I’m glad he told me. Our team is a family. If he isn’t able to come to me with anything, what kind of family have we got?

“I said, ‘Kyle, that’s great for you.

We all desire to feel whole and wanted.’ ”

Thirty wrestlers earn first state trip

cherron@shawmedia.com One of the big career highlights for most wrestlers is making their first appearance at the IHSA individuals finals in Champaign.

In Class 3A, 15 local individuals will be making their first state trip this weekend and for five of them, who are seniors, it was now or never.

Of its school-record 12 state qualifiers, Lockport has seven who are statebound for the first time. That group includes seniors Brendan Ramsey (126), Nicholas Dado (170) and Payton Fernandes (182), junior Zach Reese (152), sophomores Matt Ramos (106) and Anthony Molton (113) and freshman James Pierandozzi (120).

“We had a great day and I’m proud of all of my teammates,” Ramsey said. “We worked hard for this and it couldn’t have gone any better. Twelve people going to state, that’s pretty crazy. I’m excited about going since it’s my first time and I was just trying to make my dad proud. When you see your other teammates winning, it just motivates you and pumps you up.”

Lockport’s seven newcomers to state equaled the school’s previous-best total for total state qualifiers in one season.

Fernandes and Molton both fell one win shy of state trips last year.

“Nothing went wrong for us and it seemed like everything went in our favor,” Fernandes said. “I didn’t see anybody who wanted it more than our team. I’m excited since this is my first time downstate for high school, so I’m looking forward to big things. Most of us have been on the same team since middle school and we’ve all progressed very far.”

Lincoln-Way West and Plainfield South each had two first-time qualifiers while Bolingbrook, Joliet West, Plainfield North and Providence Catholic all had one who will make their debuts.

Of the Warriors’ three qualifiers, two are newcomers, junior Kyle Quinn (170) and freshman Payton Geigner (113). Quinn overcame injury woes to earn his trip to Champaign.

“My teammates were helping me the whole tournament and were telling me that I could do it,” Quinn said. “I had a couple of losses but I still fought through. After I came back from my injury, I had to get my confidence up, and once I did that, I was able to start rolling. All of the coaches kept pushing me and telling me that I could do it if I worked. This is really cool.”

This season, he got to help the Cougars capture their first regional title in school history.

“This is my first year going to state, and it’s an honor,” Ferraro said.

“Transferring from one school to another makes it a whole different ball game. Our team has done great and we stuck it out and won team regionals and we’ll wrestle Lincoln-Way West in team sectionals. Things have worked out amazingly for me and I couldn’t have been more blessed.”

While Providence’s Trevor Swier (170) pulled off the difficult feat of qualifying as a freshman in an upper-weight bracket, the area’s other 3A first-time qualifiers all fell one win shy of state appearances last season.

Bolingbrook senior Isaiah Herrera (195) and Plainfield North junior Matt Hennessey (195) all made sure that they would not suffer the same disappointment that they experienced in the past.

“I’ve been in the blood round three times and finally did my job,” Poch said. “It just feels great to finally be able to qualify in my senior year and have everything fall into place how I wanted it to. I knew my takedown game was strong and relied on that and trusted the process. I faced some injuries this season and battled through some stuff.

The hard work paid off.”

Herrera made great strides during his career, transforming himself from someone with limited wrestling skills coming into high school to being stateranked at his weight class and losing in overtime in the sectional finals.

“I’ve basically been wrestling since my freshman year and I’ve gotten very serious the past two years, so all of my

training is paying off so far,” Herrera said. “You have to drill every day and wrestle hard. It’s hard work, but you have to embrace the grind if you want to succeed on the mat. Hopefully I can place at state and maybe get some offers for college.”

In Class 2A, four local individuals are making their initial state trips, and all of them compete for Lemont. Freshman Kyle Schickel (106), senior Jack Leffler (113), freshman Grant LaDuke (126) and junior Alex Oruna (182) all won sectional titles.

Minooka (20-6) will visit Joliet West (203) on Tuesday night. The Indians are riding a six-game winning streak. They have reached 20 victories for a second consecutive season after not accomplishing that feat since the late 1970s.

Coach Nick DiForti’s Tigers, meanwhile, are 11-0 in the Southwest Prairie Conference, leading Joliet Central by one game and Minooka by two. They whipped Minooka, 63-35, in their first meeting. They likely will be the No. 2 seed behind Bolingbrook in the Class 4A Lincoln-Way East Sectional when the results of the online seeding are announced Thursday.

West has a big game coming up Saturday at Central – the only regular-season meeting this season between the Joliet Township schools – but don’t expect the Tigers to look past the Indians.

After Butler’s 37-pointer, West, with its quickness and length, will concentrate efforts on limiting his effectiveness.

Minooka coach Scott Tanaka said that as impressive as the 37-point game was, it was no surprise from the standpoint that Butler has been playing that well the second half of the season.

Meanwhile, despite battling illness, the rest of the Indians’ cast also has been playing well of late.

It all adds up to what should be an interesting night at West. Now, for this week’s Herald-News area rankings: 1. Bolingbrook (23-0): The Raiders not only are No. 1 in Illinois, but they have moved into the MaxPreps national rankings at No. 23. They expect to be No. 1 in the Lincoln-Way East Sectional when the IHSA announces seeds Thursday.

2. Joliet West (20-3): With Teyvion Kirk leading the way, the Tigers are continuing to build momentum toward the postseason. Like the Tigers, both of their opponents this week, Minooka and Joliet Central, have 20 wins.

3. Joliet Central (20-3): The Steelmen always come up in the conversation of which area teams are fun to watch, in addition to successful. The Saturday game against Joliet West should draw a

4. Minooka (20-6): The Indians have won six straight and would like nothing better than to make amends Tuesday night for their first meeting with Joliet West, when they dropped the 63-35 decision in early December. A victory could improve, or at least secure, their sectional seed position.

5. Lincoln-Way East (17-10): The Griffins are coming off a week where they blew away Sandburg, 56-36, and suffered a tough 53-49 loss to a very good Stagg team. They played Bolingbrook to a nine-point game earlier and will get

their second shot at the No. 1 Raiders on Friday night, this time at home.

6. Romeoville (12-11): The Spartans were not able to contain Butler last Friday night and dropped a 61-48 decision, their fourth straight loss following a seven-game win streak. Still, they always are viewed as dangerous.

7. Lockport (11-13): The Porters broke a six-game losing streak with a 24-20 victory last Friday night at Sandburg.

They have played strong competition and will get another difficult opponent Friday when Stagg visits.

8. Lemont (13-10): The Indians are looking to get on a winning streak with the postseason drawing near. They could be dangerous with senior guard P.J. Pipes combining with some size

9. Providence (10-13): The Celtics fell behind, 12-2, after one quarter and dropped a 41-32 decision to Loyola last weekend. That marked their second straight setback after a seven-game winning streak.

10. Joliet Catholic (11-12): With guard Jack Surin recovered from an ankle sprain, the Hilltoppers are back to being a team that will have a legitimate shot at winning the 3A regional they will host. They beat Ottawa Marquette, 65-44, last week before dropping a tough East Suburban Catholic road game at St. Patrick, 71-62.

Jerry Sandusky’s son Jeffrey arrested on child sex charges Auto Dealer

One of Jerry Sandusky’s sons was charged Monday with sex crimes involving two girls, more than five years after the former Penn State assistant coach was himself first arrested on child molestation charges.

Jeffrey S. Sandusky, 41, was charged by state police and arraigned by a district judge in Bellefonte on 14 counts. He was jailed on $200,000 Jeffrey S. bail.

Sandusky Sandusky was a stalwart supporter of his father and accompanied his mother, Dottie, to many of his court proceedings. On Monday, Dottie accompanied Jeffrey Sandusky to his.

Police accused him of soliciting naked photos from a then-16-year-old girl last year and seeking oral sex in 2013 from her then-15-year-old sister.

His defense lawyer, Lance Marshall, declined to comment on the allegations.

“All children have a right to be safe,” said Centre County District Attorney Stacy Parks Miller. “We will prosecute this case as aggressively as we do all child abuse cases.”

Miller said Sandusky talked to investigators. “He made statements,” Miller said. “I wouldn’t classify them necessarily as directly inculpatory, but I don’t think they helped him much.”

Sandusky was charged with solicitation of statutory sexual assault, solicitation of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, six counts of unlawful

contact with a minor and two counts each of solicitation to photograph or depict sexual acts, sexual abuse of children and corruption of minors.

A state trooper said in the arrest affidavit that on Nov. 21, the alleged victims’ father turned over to investigators text messages from Sandusky in which he asked one of the girls for nude photographs.

The affidavit said Sandusky told the alleged victim in texts in March that “it’s not weird because he studied medicine” and instructed her “to not show these texts to anyone.”

The girl’s mother told investigators that when she confronted Sandusky, he told her “he knows it was wrong and inappropriate,” police said.

“The victims’ mother advised that Jeffrey Sandusky had advised her that he was trying to help her daughter by getting naked pictures of her off the internet and needed naked pictures of her to do it and to ‘role play,’” the affidavit said.

The girl, called “Victim 1” in the affidavit, told police the texts made her uncomfortable and that “he kept pressuring me and asked me multiple times not to show the texts to anyone,” police said.

Prosecutors allege Jeffrey Sandusky sought oral sex from a second girl, “Victim 2,” in 2013. She was 15 years old at the time.

“Victim 2” told investigators that Jeffrey Sandusky told her in March: “I can’t even say anything except I’m sorry.”

Jerry Sandusky, who adopted Jeffrey Sandusky and five other children, is serving a lengthy prison sentence for sexual abuse of 10 boys.

Colorado delays approval of coach Mike MacIntyre’s extension The ASSOCIATED PRESS BOULDER, Colo. – Football coach Mike MacIntyre’s $16.25 million contract extension is being held up as the University of Colorado looks into his handling of domestic abuse allegations levied against a former assistant coach.

The Board of Regents was scheduled to review MacIntyre’s new deal this week, but will wait until the next board meeting in April. MacIntyre is coming off a turnaround season that netted him several Coach of the Year

honors and an extension through 2021.

However, he’s come under scrutiny over the way he handled accusations against former secondary coach Joe Tumpkin, who is facing several charges of felony assault over the alleged abuse of his former girlfriend.

Tumpkin resigned last month.

A recent statement from Chancellor Philip DiStefano indicated that MacIntyre and athletic director Rick George learned of the allegations in mid-December, but Tumpkin still coached during the Alamo Bowl on Dec. 29.

of games in the third period, you’re tied or you’re down a goal or you’re up a goal, I think you want to make sure you’re getting one point in those games, right?” Hawks winger Patrick Kane said. “Then see what happens in overtime. We have some guys that can perform well in overtime or a shootout, whatever it may be.”

The solution – one that has been bandied about in hockey circles for years – is to go to the international point system, which gives out three points for a regulation win, two for an overtime or shootout win, one for an overtime or shootout loss, and none for a regulation loss. The idea is to incentivize winning in regulation – to make it worthwhile to play a more entertaining, riskier brand of hockey in the third period.

In a three-point system, the Hawks would be 11 points behind the Wild (111 to 100), with Nashville 14 points behind the Hawks and St. Louis one more point out. Teams such as Winnipeg and Dallas (74 points each) would be much farther out of the playoff picture, and the trade market likely would be open for business with more spread-out standings. But Hawks general manager Stan

Bowman – who, like most of the younger generation of the NHL, didn’t sound opposed to the idea – wasn’t so sure it would make that much of a difference.

After all, a regulation win over a division opponent would be a six-point swing.

“The other side of it, which nobody really talks about, is if you have three points, you can make up a lot of ground,” Bowman said. “They always talk about how it’s going to separate the teams, but you can make up ground quicker. If you win seven games in a row in regulation, that’s a lot better than seven games in a row in overtime. I think it would give teams a hope that you could get hot. There would be more separation, but there also would be hope. Right now, it’s just so hard to make up ground on anybody. Because every night, you can win five in a row and really not move up because other teams are getting points when they’re losing.”

As for the effect it would have on NHL history, the record book has long been warped by the elimination of ties, and by expanding the season from 76 to 84 games, then back to 82.

There’s a moment in nearly every third period of every close game, usually about halfway through but sometimes even earlier, when frantic suddenly becomes tedious, when aggression yields to passivity, when high-octane becomes low-key.

Breakouts are slower. Defense is tighter. Point-men stop pinching. Highskill forwards make only low-risk passes. Both teams are playing for overtime, and it’s a strategy that renders too many third periods dull when they should be dramatic.

“Maybe not early in the third, but definitely as the game wears on and you get in the last 10 minutes of the third, it’s impossible not to think that, ‘Hey, we’ll take the point and take our chances in overtime,’” San Jose Sharks coach Peter DeBoer said. “I think everybody does that.”

The so-called “loser point” – the standings point given to teams that lose in overtime or shootouts, has created unprecedented parity in the league.

Barely two weeks before the March 1

trade deadline, all 16 Eastern Conference teams are either in a playoff spot or within seven points of one. And 12 of the 14 Western Conference teams were in, or within six points.

It’s created such a logjam in the standings that general managers can’t even make trades, because of the 30 teams in the NHL, only the Arizona Coyotes and Colorado Avalanche are truly sellers at this point.

Every point is so valuable, that in a close game, few teams are willing to risk getting none in order to chase two in regulation. That’s especially true in interconference games, when the opponent picking up a point doesn’t do any harm.

Even Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville, whose go-to catch-phrase is, “Nobody likes winning more than me,” does it. He doesn’t call it “playing for overtime,” but calls it “being smart.”

He insisted the Hawks don’t change their style of play based on period or conference alignment, but the cautious third-period performances speak for themselves.

GARY, Ind. – Charnelle Reed and Christina Ekhomu scored 21 points each as the top-ranked University of St. Francis women’s basketball team improved to 27-0 with an 82-56 nonconference win over No. 13-ranked Indiana University Northwest on Monday.

With its eighth victory of the year over a nationally-ranked opponent and 38th consecutive regular-season win, USF remained one of two undefeated teams in NAIA Division II. IU Northwest fell to 23-5.

Trailing 21-19 at the conclusion of the first quarter, USF launched a 15-0 run during the first six minutes of the second stanza to build a 34-21 advantage. The RedHawks closed out the half with a 9-2 spurt to close the gap to 36-30 at the intermission.

USF outscored IU Northwest 22-5 to open the second half and remained in control the rest of the way. The Saints took their largest lead, 74-43, midway through the final period.

Jordan Giddings grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds to go along with 11 points for her third double-double of the season. Kaitlin Aylward added 12 points in 17 minutes off the bench.

Reed finished with nine boards and six assists in addition to her 21 points.

YMCA offering second yearlong program for adults at risk for prediabetes

When people ask Caro Lynn Pierceall of Joliet, “Oh, my goodness! You look so good! What did you do?” Pierceall is happy to tell them.

In January, Pierceall, 64, completed the YMCA’s yearlong Diabetes Prevention Program.

The program, which uses a CDC-approved curriculum, helps adults at risk for type 2 diabetes reduce that risk through learning lifestyle changes, said Susan Krause, health and wellness director at the C.W. Avery YMCA in Plainfield.

For Pierceall, who said she was extremely overweight, inactive and taking medicine for high blood pressure, success meant losing – and keeping off – 60 pounds, walking or riding her exercise bike for 150 minutes a week and reading food labels to ensure healthy choices.

These results brought Pierceall a reduction in blood pressure and in the premium she pays on a life insurance policy. Pierceall lauded the camaraderie of her group, too.

“Everyone was very encouraging and we all got along well,” Pierceall said.

According to the Greater Joliet Area YMCA website, adults with a body mass index of 25 or above and those at risk for, or who already have, a prediabetes diagnosis, are eligible to participate.

The program’s goal is to reduce body weight by 7 percent and increase exercise to 150 minutes a week. This is accomplished through participating in 16 weekly sessions, plus additional monthly sessions, in a classroom-based setting, the website stated.

Trained lifestyle coaches lead the classes, Krause said. The curriculum addresses the issues participants face and the lifestyle coaches guide them in problem-solving, which provides accurate information and tools for change, she added.

“When I hear ‘diabetes,’ I think sugar,” said Jane Ferguson, 74, of Plainfield, who also completed the pilot program. “We did talk about sugar, but we kept it at a low level. We really concentrated on fats and calories.”

Ferguson said she was already a healthy eater (“I love fruits and vegetables”) before she joined the program, but she also frequently splurged on chocolate and pizza. An aunt had diabetes and a sister has type 2 diabetes, so Ferguson was concerned enough to

“I don’t have it yet and thought I’d better prevent it,” Ferguson said.

Ferguson said she now tracks the amount of fat and calories she consumes and writes a list before heading out to the grocery store. She was already taking exercise classes at the YMCA when she began the program but has now added regular walking and water walking.

She gradually lost 20 pounds over the course of the year and hopes to lose 5 more.

“It seems like that last 5 is the hardest,” Ferguson said.

Krause admitted feeling skeptical about the program when she first learned about it.

“I was skeptical at first because it was so simple,” Krause said.

Krause feels the support attendees give each other as they build up trust is key. All members of the pilot program lost 5 percent to 7 percent of their body weight over the year, Krause said.

“We had a couple people in the double digits and one person lost 20 percent of her body weight,” Krause said.

All participants also increased their activity level, too, which many seem to be continuing.

“A lot of them are coming to the Y now, walking or taking fitness classes,”

What is prediabetes?

According to a news release from Morris Hospital, prediabetes is the stage before type 2 diabetes, where the blood sugar level is higher than normal, but not high enough to be considered diabetes.

For people who have prediabetes, their fasting glucose level will test between 100 to 125, a warning sign that indicates diabetes could develop in the next five to 10 years. Over time, diabetes can lead to heart disease, neuropathy, blindness, and in women, complications with pregnancy.

Dr. Nuzhat Chalisa, an endocrinologist on staff at Morris Hospital, stated in the news release about 86 million people in the U.S. – or 1 in 3 adults – have prediabetes. About 90 percent aren’t aware they have it.

Risk factors include a family history of diabetes, obesity, hypertension and a history of gestational diabetes, Chalisa stated in the news release. Screening for prediabetes simply requires checking the fasting blood glucose level, she added.

Testing positive is an opportunity for lifestyle changes to prevent the progression to diabetes, the news release stated. Daily physical activity and maintaining a healthy weight can help normalize blood glucose levels.

Bereavement workshop Morris Hospital pediatrician earns board certification offered by Joliet Hospice JOLIET – The bereavement department of Joliet Area Community Hospice is offering a four-session Family Journey workshop for ages 6 to adult.

The sessions will meet March 2, 9, 16 and 23.

Each adult session includes a presentation by a hospice staff member on a grief-related topic, followed by group support. Children and teenagers will meet separately with counselors and peers.

All workshops take place from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Joliet Area Community Hospice offices, located at 250 Water Stone Circle, Joliet.

The program is open to the community. Your loved one did not have to be in our care for you to participate. The cost is $40 a family. Sliding scale is available.

Spend less time in front of screen Dear Doctor: Our neighbor’s kids, who don’t have access to computers, video games or other technology, spend a lot of time playing together outdoors. How can we wean our own kids from their screens without causing a family rebellion?

Dear Reader: You’re facing a real challenge that has crept up on parents in the last decade or so. Once the argument was simply about getting kids to turn off the TV. Today, though, an array of devices effortlessly capture our children’s – and let’s be honest, our own – time and attention.

When the Kaiser Family Foundation conducted a study about screen time six years ago, the results were eye-opening.

Its research showed children between the ages of 8 and 18 spend more than 7½ hours each day in front of screens of one kind or another. And that didn’t include the use of a computer for homework.

Why is this a problem? Children who spend that much time immobilized in front of a screen, whether it’s the TV, a computer, smartphone or video game console, are at significantly greater risk of obesity. There is evidence kids who play a lot of video games are more likely to display aggressive behavior. Sleep problems due to sustained screen use are common. And a preference for the immersive world of a tech device over the companionship of siblings or friends can lead to antisocial behavior.

So how do you win the battle for your kids’ attention? The biggest challenge may be that, first, you need to set a good example. How many times have you driven by a playground and seen parents completely absorbed in their smartphones? If the tug of the screen is difficult for an adult to resist, imagine its effect on young and malleable minds.

Begin by setting strict guidelines for yourself and (here’s the hard part) following them. Once you’ve got your own screen time

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no media use for children younger than 18 to 24 months old. One hour a day of high-quality programming is deemed to be OK for children 2 to 5 years old. Although the academy no longer makes a specific recommendation regarding children 6 and older, two hours per day of screen time is a reasonable goal.

• For best results, start with a family discussion. Tell your children what you’re doing and why. Explain that they will sleep better, have more energy and will have time for other activities.

• Create screen time limits and take a few weeks to ease into them. Tapering off will allow your family to work together toward a common goal.

• Make a weekly chart to log screen time and go over the results as a family.

• Create screen-free bedrooms for everyone in the family. (Yes, adults too.)

• Meals should be screen-free, including smartphones and TVs. • Plan alternate activities, like taking a family hike or bike ride, baking cookies together or having a game night.

• Resist the urge to use screen time as either a reward or punishment.

Although it may be rough going at first, by helping your kids to look away from their screens, you’re giving them a real and loving gift.
