Columbian Exposition storage buildings – Hyde Park As the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’ discovery of the New World approached, the federal government announced that there would be a national event to celebrate.

A number of cities across the nation entered a competition to host the national exposition, including New York, Washington, St. Louis and Chicago. On April 21, 1890, Congress designated Chicago as the official site for the Columbian Exposition.

One of the main reasons the city was chosen was the fame of its local architects, including Daniel Burnham, John Root, William Le Baron Jenney and Louis Sullivan.

Once Jackson Park was chosen as the main location for the fair and before a single exposition structure was raised, property in many neighborhoods such as Hyde Park, Kenwood, Woodlawn and Englewood was bought, and retail spaces, hotels, warehouses and other buildings were constructed in anticipation of exposition needs.

In 1891, two years before the opening of the World’s Columbian Exposition, Frederick C. Gibbs built a row of one-story frame store buildings on each side of 57th Street, between Stone Island Avenue and the Illinois Central tracks.

Designed by local architect George Beaumont, the 26 simple-framed buildings were intended to be temporary spaces to produce quick rental income for Gibbs.

Inside amenities were scarce, even for the time, as the store buildings lacked electricity and gas and relied on a stove for heat.

When the Columbian Exposition opened in 1893, these buildings were perfectly located near the South Park station as riders arrived at the 57th Street entrance to the fair. During the fair, the buildings were used as novelty booths and concession stands for the fairgoers.

After the fair, the University of Chicago helped to make Hyde Park the center of an active cultural movement. Concerts, lectures and dramatic performances on

The Now photograph shows a similar view today. campus drew people from all over Chicago, and in increasing numbers, professionals with intellectual interests came to live in Hyde Park-Kenwood neighborhoods.

In time, the area around East 57th Street became known as an art center in Hyde Park as paintings and writings from the “colony” began to attract national attention. The area soon became known as “literary bohemia” when poet and novelist Floyd Dell moved into the area in 1913. Other writers, poets and artists soon called Hyde Park home, including Sherwood Anderson, Sinclair Lewis, Carl Sandburg, Margaret Anderson, Harriett Monroe, Charles Corwin, Charles Francis Brown and Karl Albeit Buehr.

moved in to keep the area active, unique and culturally renowned. By the late 1940s, however, the original buildings of the 57th Street Artists Colony became increasingly contentious sites as community residents complained about the growing crime and blight in the area.

As one of the last remaining structures from the 19th century fair era, these simple structures stood in Hyde Park as both a symbol of a by-gone era and the new reality of the distressed urban neighborhood.

While the 1950s land clearance and urban renewal programs of Hyde Park-Kenwood removed many of the “time-worn” buildings in each of these areas, the 57th Street Artists Colony managed to hang on until it was demolished in 1962.

Eighty-one years after it first appeared on Chicago streets, the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile still is a sight many people love to see.

“This is awesome,” Mo Fisher of Plainfield said as she stepped into the Wienermobile on Saturday.

She was one of hundreds who visited the 27-foot-long wiener interior set upon a Chevrolet truck chassis, which was parked in front of Tony’s Finer Foods in Joliet. The Wienermobile later went to the Tony’s store in Bolingbrook.

What makes the Wienermobile awe-

“Every day’s a fun day in the Wienermobile. There’s a blue sky in there – mustard and ketchup on the floor.”

Hotdogger (a Wienermobile driver) some might be inexplicable.

“I’d say because it’s real bizarre and unusual and awesome,” Fisher said.

“And there’s mustard on the floor.”

A painted swirl of mustard lines the floor. The seats are covered in ketchup and mustard colors. The interior ceiling is painted to resemble a blue sky with white, fluffy clouds.

“Every day’s a fun day in the Wienermobile,” driver Isaac Wilker told visitors stepping inside to look around.

“There’s a blue sky in there – mustard and ketchup on the floor.”

The Wienermobile also is equipped with a sophisticated sound system that plays the familiar Oscar Mayer wiener jingle – “I wish I were an Oscar Mayer wiener ...” – for parades and random, happy occasions.

Wilker, who along with fellow driver Lizzie Duffey previously had taken the Wienermobile through Chicago, described the magical effect the mobile

hot dog has on people by pointing to a recent drive on Michigan Avenue.

“You have construction workers.

You have business people in suits and ties. You have tourists. They all pull out their cameras and take pictures,” Wilker said.

When he played the Oscar Mayer wiener jingle for the spectators, Wilker said, the strangers in the big city burst into song.

“It’s fun when you see this giant hot dog driving around the street,” he said.

The Wienermobile – and there are six of them, based in Madison, Wisconsin – gets 9,000 requests a year for appearances across the country, Wilker said.

A zest for work, golf and people Marie Walsh tackled life with passion

JOLIET – Marianne Governale of Joliet began the eulogy for her mother like this: “We honor my mom by celebrating because there are few people who enjoyed a celebration more than her.”

That sums up Marie Walsh of Joliet.

An old-fashioned court reporter who learned shorthand while a student at the former St. Francis Academy (now Joliet Catholic Academy), Marie worked at the old courthouse and was the legal secretary for Will County Circuit Judge Angelo F. Pistilli, said Marie’s daughter, Kathleen Walsh of Wilmington.

“She learned the new stenographer machine at JUCO [Joliet Junior College], but she was so fast with the shorthand, she said, ‘Why take a chance?’ ” Marie worked full time when her children, including her late son, Daniel, were growing up during an era when few women did so. But her children also had the benefits of a stay-at-home mom.

After school, the kids traipsed to the home of “Grandma Kuglich,” who lived down the street. Grandma Kuglich was ready for them with freshly baked bread and a chore list from Marie, not that the kids always completed it.

“She’d fall into the habit of writing the list in shorthand, so we had the excuse, ‘We couldn’t read what it said,’ ” Marianne said.

After dinner, Marie would retire to her “office” (a converted porch) to type her notes, using carbon paper for duplicates.

“She would wait until a case closed so she would know how many copies to make,” Kathleen said. “I can’t even begin to think how fast she typed.”

Marie loved learning new skills, whether she tackled handwriting analysis or improving her golf game. Now, Marie didn’t golf during her working years, and her husband, Jack, died suddenly when Marie was 56 so she delayed retirement for many years.

“She didn’t ask for a lot in all those years she lived on her own and worked,” Marianne said.

Kathleen added, “She cut her own grass and decorated outside and inside for Christmas.”

“She had more energy than both of us combined, I think,” Marianne said.

“And she was stoic. It took a lot to see her cry. She was tough.”

But when Marie did stop working and start golfing, she golfed nearly every day, rarely used a cart and went by herself, so she often joined other groups once she arrived at the course.

Marie met many people through golf.

“She golfed with people of all ages,” Marianne said. “I’d meet young kids who’d say, ‘Yeah I golfed with your mom.’ ” Marie died June 27. Her obituary didn’t include her age because Marie was firm about not revealing her age.

But loved ones got around Marie’s mandate by singing, “Seventy-Six Trombones” on one birthday and “Around the World in 80 Days” on another.

But Marianne would say this: “She was golfing every day up to the age of 85,” Marianne said.

An arm injury while Marie was teeing off one day ended her time with the hobby, Kathleen said. Marie had permission from her doctor to golf, but the injury had diminished her skill.

Marie simply refused to play a subpar game.

Or make a bad batch of Christmas cookies. Marie made sugar cookies, potica that was “most filling and not dough” and fruitcake that was “actually edible,” Kathleen said. Marie wanted her girls’ help, but she didn’t quite trust them to get the process right.

“My job was to say which pan to use,” Marianne said.

Mostly, Marie loved people, and she loved to talk to them, not about them. She also had an adventurous streak – whether that was flying in a B-17 at Lewis University in Romeoville or going out to the bar with her grandson and his friends after college graduation.

“She had a Bailey’s, and when the bar was closing up, she walked out with it in her hand,” Marianne said.

“The bartender said, ‘You can’t leave with that,’ and she said, ‘Oh, no, I’m not wasting it.’ So they put it in a paper cup and let her go.”

Marie worked full time when her children were growing up, during an era when few women did so.

To be clear, Marie was not a drinker. But Marie grew up during the Great Depression and was extremely frugal, Marianne said.

“She didn’t waste anything or throw anything away,” Marianne said. “She hated beer, but if she had a

can of beer to rinse her hair and only used half, she’d drink the other half.”

Black Teen Summit teaches students to search for opportunities “The ability to say no to temptation now will give you the opportunity to say yes to options later.”

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – High school students at the Black Teen Summit in Joliet were taught that, when they’re faced with difficulties in life, they should resist temptation so they can say yes to opportunities later.

Ernest Crim III, a Joliet Central High School teacher, gave students at Friday’s Joliet Junior College-based summit an example of a time when he had to do exactly that.

Last year, he and his wife, Cassie, were subjected to racial slurs and spitting by Jessica Sanders, a white woman, at a Chicago festival.

Instead of giving into anger and fighting, Crim recorded the incident on video, and Sanders later was charged with battery and a hate crime.

“The ability to say no to temptation now will give you the opportunity to say yes to options later. But sometimes you got to just remember that the promise is there,” Crim said.

Crim was one of several presenters at the seventh annual Black Teen Summit, sponsored by the JJC Office of Multicultural Affairs, that teaches black students about college opportunities, black history, job skills and more.

Crim said to the crowd of students that they should try to educate themselves more and learn about black history, including the history of their own families.

“If you learn about your own family, you learn about what they went through, you get empowered,” Crim said.

He also recommended for them to be around people who believe in their potential, asking if their friends are not encouraging them, “Why are you with them?”

Students also should learn the importance of money and economic power so they can improve their communities, he said, giving an example of the thriving black community in Greenwood, Tulsa, Oklahoma – known as Black Wall Street – in the early 20th century.

Tim Lee, founder and CEO of Tim Lee Concepts, gave his closing remarks at the summit, reciting what he called the ABCs of life for students to remember when they are tempted to fight or be disrespectful in the face of obstacles.

He said people are living in a time when unity is needed, including black unity.

“There are things that will separate us; like the schools we go to, there are things that will separate us like the color of our skin, the texture of our hair, but we’ve got to get to a place where we can put our differences aside and put love in the front,” Lee said.

Chanooka Wish turns 10 years old, and plenty has changed With her familiar big smile and extending a handshake to all who entered the room, Chanooka Wish founder and President Carolyn Koranda thanked everyone who attended the open house, celebrating the organization’s 10-year anniversary.

Along with the public, Koranda had invited those who either helped the organization get its start or has continued to support it along the way.

The guest list included officers from the Channahon Police Department, the Channahon fire chief and firefighters from the fire department, Minooka Mayor Pat Brennan and Channahon Park District Executive Director Chuck Szoke.

Koranda’s drive to make Chanooka Wish successful – in the midst of raising three kids, having a firefighter husband as a board member (Al Koranda) and working – stems from her own childhood of being “one of those kids who went to school with holes in her shoes and no food in her stomachs.”

Koranda is not shy sharing her past; in fact, she wants people in need to know she understands the feelings of not having enough, not measuring up and not wanting to ask for help.

Koranda credits her sister, Pam Heiy, a Chanooka Wish volunteer,

The four young sisters at the time were in a program at church when Pam stood next to the instructor’s desk salivating over a box of doughnuts.

When the instructor asked why she wasn’t reading her book, Pam had no hesitation in exclaiming they hadn’t had food yet that day.

While their mom resisted help from the church at first, baskets of food became a regular reality for the family who eventually had five children to feed. Koranda’s mom later started many programs at the church to return the kindness.

When the organization Helping Hands, run by members of Channahon Police Department, decided to dissolve, Koranda, a volunteer, jumped in with both feet and started Chanooka Wish to take up the slack.

Her first program was helping to organize the Thanksgiving meal drive along with the Minooka Lions Club. With a bake sale held during a St. Baldrick’s fundraiser, Chanooka

Wish volunteers collected money to buy Christmas toys and food for local families in need.

The organization was run out of the Koranda home for many years. Her three children, two of whom were born after the inception of the organization, have only known holidays filled with boxing food, wrapping gifts and working to help those less fortunate.

Now the nonprofit organization is renting its first space on Thomas Dillion Drive, which includes storage space, a huge foyer and conference room where distributions can be held, and for the first time, an actual office – furnished by items donated to the organization.

It was a difficult decision for Koranda to designate money to pay rent instead of using it for people who need it, but Chanooka Wish has grown so exponentially that it was a logical next step.

The organization now collaborates with 50 other agencies in the area so services aren’t duplicated, including Minooka Women’s Club, church food pantries, Channahon Park District, Lions Clubs ... the list goes on.

Koranda and the handful of regular volunteers who make up the board would like to see more sponsorship from area businesses so they can

continue expanding things such as the school supply program, which costs families between $65 and $80 a year per child. It’s the organization’s biggest growing program right now.

Chanooka Wish has gotten involved with Safety First, a program through the Channahon and Minooka fire districts that buys and installs smoke alarms mostly for senior citizens but for anyone in need.

The open house also was an opportunity to pick the brains of people from other organizations and see where they can collaborate or fill in gaps to help determine their path for the next 10 years.

By evening’s end, there was a possible candidate for an opening as volunteer secretary and volunteers proposed brainstorming with Shorewood HUGS on a program, among other great ideas.

“Now that the economy is back on track, what else can we do to help people?” Koranda said. “We are trying to build resources for tomorrow. Chanooka Wish needs to reach into that and find out what we need to do.”

Duffey said the Wienermobile has a long history of bringing smiles to people’s faces, which was one of the reasons it was created in 1936. “[Oscar Mayer] wanted to bring optimism to the streets of Chicago. It was in the middle of the Depression,” Duffey said.

The Wienermobile also brought the message that Oscar Mayer meats were safe at a time when regulation of meat processing was in its early stages, Duffey said.

“We wanted people to recognize that,” she said. “We wanted to be out in the city where people could see us.

People loved it.”

They still do.

“Isn’t it the coolest thing?” Michelle Picard of Shorewood said.

Picard said she got the word from her sister that the Wienermobile was at Tony’s. She said she picked up her two nephews and rushed over.

It was Picard’s second close-up look at a Wienermobile. The first was when she was living in the Old Town neighborhood of Chicago and one parked right in front of her apartment.

“It was mind-blowing how many people were stopping to take pictures.

They were stopping traffic on Clark Street,” Picard said. “The Wienermobiles are huge attractions.”

Nephews Nate and Matt Schmidt were happily blowing on wiener whistles, which were introduced in 1952.

Like the Wienermobile, the wiener whistle is an enduring icon.

“I sent my grandma a picture of this, and she wanted me to get a whistle,” Fisher said.

Grandma Mo Westhoff, who was on the phone from Texas, had another request – sing the Oscar Mayer wiener song for her.

Fisher, joined by Wilker and Duffey, did.

Paul later went on to work for Commonwealth Edison / Midwest Generation and the Boilermaker Union Local 1. He was a member of the American Legion Post 1080 and the Moran A.C. Paul had a real passion for baseball, golf, American muscle cars and rock n’ roll. He loved to strike a conversation with anyone that he met. He was a real child-at-heart and could not go anywhere without knowing someone. He was a genuine people person. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He will be truly missed by all who knew him.

Phyllis B. Benco (nee Plese), age 89, peacefully on Wednesday, February 8, 2017.

Phyllis is survived by her loving children, Sandy (John) Heck and Ken (Sherry) Benco; granddaughter, Julie L. Pehlke; great-grandchildren, Jack, Cole and Grace Pehlke; brother, John (Marilyn) Plese; sister-inlaw, Eileen (the late Eugene) Plese; numerous, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Phyllis was born and raised in Joliet and became a devoted wife at an early age. She was an outstanding homemaker all of her life who always put her family first. She was the perfect mother, grandmother and GiGi. She loved fashion, especially clothing and jewelry.

DANIEL N. LUNDEEN Born: May 11, 1949 Died: February 9, 2017

Daniel N. Lundeen, age 67, resident of Loda, Illinois (formerly Crest Hill), passed away suddenly on February 9, 2017 in Ruskin, Florida.

Beloved husband of Ginger; loving stepfather of Scott (Kim), Greg (Judy) and Jeff (Michelle) Libersher; cherished grandfather of Kayleigh, Ryan, Krista, Marissa, Tyler, Lenny, Zac, Angela, Kelly, Greg Jr.; and great-grandfather of Cooper; also fond brother of Gerald, his wife, Sheila and their family. He was also a wonderful pet father to Ruby, his doberman.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Arvid and Stella Lundeen.

He was born in Joliet, Illinois and raised and educated in Lockport schools. He served in the U.S. Marines in the Vietnam Conflict. Dan and Ginger were married on October 22, 1978.

After retiring from the railroads with 27 years of service, they moved to Loda, Illinois to enjoy lakeside living.

Dan was an avid fisher and lover of the outdoors. When he wasn’t outside enjoying the lake or traveling to Florida to escape the Illinois winter, he loved watching the Cubs, the Bears and the Bulls – and if absolutely nothing else was on TV, he would even occasionally watch a Sox game.

As it was Dan’s request, cremation rites have been accorded. A Memorial Gathering will be held at a later date.

and was inducted into the Mazon Speed Bowl / Grundy County Hall of Fame in 2004. Jim worked as a truck driver for Hoffman Transportation until retirement in 2011. He was a member of the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing, The Miller/Offenhauser Historical Society and was active with the Mazon Speed Bowl.

Survivors include his two daughters, Suzette Costillo of Tinley Park and Ericka Wilson-Heaton of Sumpter, South Carolina; six grandchildren, Juan, Julian, Christian and Adrian Costillo and Jenna and T.J. Wilson; one sister-in-law, Janice McClean of Braceville; lifelong best friend and caregiver, Valerie Carter of Coal City; numerous nieces, nephews, and countless friends, including, Al (Sandra) Harris of Elwood, Bruce (Linda) Field of Lockport, Aaron (Helen) Willis of Coal City, Mickey Yeager of Joliet and Dick Lubbers of Midlothian.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Ronald McClean.

Born February 26, 1945 in Chicago, James Elliott was a son of the late George and Edna (Gorski) McClean. Jim grew up in Summit and Charleston before moving with his family to Joliet at the age of eight. He was a graduate of Joliet Township High School with the class of 1963. Jim’s main passion was racing and in May of 1966 he began racing midget cars at Joliet Memorial Stadium. Throughout his racing career he set numerous track records, had over 100 wins

and Deborah (Patrick) Bazzel; nieces and nephews, Dionne, Christopher, Lionel, Jason, Melissa and Christopher; great-nieces and great- nephews, Jessica, Tiffany, Travis, Justin, Robert, Joline, Gabriella and Hailey Ann; numerous friends also survive.

Preceded in death by his son, John Rachal; nephew and Godson Jason Suero.

Ricky was born in Pineville, Louisiana. He and his family migrated to Chicago in 1951 where he attended St. Paul Grade School and graduated high school at Holy Trinity. Ricky was drafted by the United States Army in 1971 honorably serving his country until 2010 when he retired.

He also worked for Western Electric and was a machinist at Craftsmen Sheetmetal while in the reserves. Ricky was an avid Chicago sports fan, who also loved the Okland Raiders. He thoroughly loved playing cards and dominos with friends and family. Ricky had an extreme passion for the film industry. He was an avid reader with a passion for military history. Ricky was a very devoted hands on father and loved his family. He will be greatly missed.

A celebration of Ricky’s life will begin on Wednesday, February 15, 2017 with prayers in the funeral home chapel at 9:15 a.m. then driving in procession to The Church of St. Jude in Joliet for a Mass of Christian Burial to be held at 10:00 a.m. Interment to follow at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood where full military honors will be conducted. CARL E. ZIESMER Carl E. Ziesmer “Sarge Z,” age 85, of Joliet, IL, at rest peacefully at Suncoast Mid Pinellas Care Center, Pinellas Park, Florida after a courageous battle with leukemia.

Carl grew up in Joliet, he joined the service and served his country honorably. Carl’s bravery, during the Korea and Vietnam wars earned him a Purple Heart and multiple

bronze medals. He retired with honors from the United States Army as a Sergeant in 1970.

Upon retiring from the United States Army, he was employed with Commonwealth Edison and retired in 1989. Carl was a member of the VFW Stone City Post and American Legion and Dale A.C. His main passion was attending his yearly reunions with the 11th. Armored Cavalry Black Horse L Troop.

He also loved traveling to the warmth of their other home in Florida with his beloved wife Pat. While in Florida he enjoyed going to auctions or cruising the park in his Chicago Bears golf cart with his sidekick Casey.

He had a great love for his pets, Molly, Chrissy, Casey and the newest member of the family, Sadie.

Carl is survived by his beloved wife, Patricia (nee Sarver); four children, Carl (Ruth) Ziesmer, Debora (Paul) Duchene, Steve (Sue) Dieter, John (Vicki) Dieter. He also leaves behind eight grandchildren, Daniel (Laura B.) Ziesmer, Laura A. Ziesmer, Michelle Duchene, Danielle Duchene, Zachery (Suzie) Dieter, Chistopher (Julie) Dieter, Jorie Dieter, Matthew (Ariana) Dieter; three great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and many special friends.

Carl was preceded in death by his father, Karl Friedrich Ziesemer; mother, Anna Mary (nee Patrick) Hughes; step father, Everett Emerson Hughes; brother, John Ziesmer and sister, Donna Matriciano.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Former U.S. Rep. Patrick Kennedy said he thinks what President Donald Trump has done so far in office will “hopefully spark a re-examination of who we are as a people.”

The member of one of the nation’s most famous Democratic families told The Associated Press in an interview he sees threats to the constitutional form of government, and said his father, the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy, of Massachusetts, believed that Americans should never take democracy for granted.

“He lost his brothers serving this country, whether in World War II or in elective office, and just knew that this country needed to be the beacon that everyone looked at it around the world,” Kennedy told the AP. “He’d be so distressed right now to see people cynically tear apart what so many people have laid down their lives to build.”

The former eight-term congressman from Rhode Island left office in 2011 and has stayed in the public sphere as an activist for better care for mental health and addiction, with endeavors such as The Kennedy Forum. He now lives in

Illinois worker pay battle to resurface in court, assembly

SPRINGFIELD – The question of whether to continue paying government workers during Illinois’s budget stalemate will surface again this week as a court takes up the state attorney general’s motion to halt payments and lawmakers consider a threat by Gov. Bruce Rauner to veto one of two proposals to keep them going.

A judge in St. Clair County on Thursday is scheduled to hear Attorney General Lisa Madigan’s request to end paychecks until the state breaks its nearly two-year-long budget gridlock. She is asking the judge to reverse a previous court order requiring Illinois to pay state employees even in the absence of a budget, arguing that stopping pay is constitutional and will hasten a budget agreement.

Girls, 11 and 12, shot in head in separate Chicago attacks

CHICAGO – Police are investigating separate shootings on Chicago’s South Side that left two young girls in critical condition.

The Chicago Tribune reported that an 11-year-old girl was sitting in a parked vehicle Saturday night when she was hit by gunfire in the back of the head.

A 12-year-old girl was shot in the head while playing with friends in an unrelated shooting the same night.

The weekend’s gun violence also claimed the lives of a 23-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman in separate incidents.

The Tribune reported that at least four others were wounded Saturday in separate attacks.

Illinois teachers learn to help students affected by trauma

DECATUR – Six schools in central Illinois are participating in a pilot project to train teachers, administrators and other adults to help students who are affected by trauma.

The program began through a Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration grant to train school district personnel and community members, the Decatur Herald & Review reported. They learn to approach their work with awareness of trauma, which can affect children’s brain development and their emotional and physical health.

The agency’s statistics show that in the past year, 60 percent of youth nationally have been exposed to violence, including assault with a weapon, sexual victimization, child maltreatment and dating violence.

Schools participating in the program include Franklin and Muffley Schools, Phoenix Academy, Argenta-Oreana, Sangamon

Valley and Deland-Weldon schools.

The program’s goal is to expand the project next year until all schools in the area are involved.

Bradley to build $86M business, engineering site

PEORIA – Bradley University in central Illinois is moving forward with plans to build a new, $86 million business and engineering complex.

The Peoria Journal-Star reported that faculty and staff will begin moving out of an existing building after spring graduation to make way for the new complex. It will be built on the current site of Baker Hall, which will be demolished.

The 270,000-square-foot building is intended to attract more students, businesses and local community members to campus. It’s also part of efforts to jumpstart collaboration between the engineering and business departments.

The board of trustees gave the go-ahead to proceed with the plans after the Peoria university raised almost half of the total cost. The building is scheduled to be completed in 2020.

OROVILLE, Calif. – Thousands of northern Californians were told to leave their homes Sunday evening, as an emergency spillway in the country’s tallest dam was in danger of failing and unleashing uncontrolled floodwaters on towns below.

The emergency spillway of the Oroville Dam in Northern California could fail within an hour, unleashing uncontrolled floodwaters from Lake Oroville, the California Department of Water Resources said Sunday afternoon.

People in downstream areas need to leave the area immediately, the department said.

Officials earlier Sunday stressed the dam was structurally sound and said there was no threat to the public.

Residents of Oroville, a town of 16,000 people, should head north toward Chico, and other cities should follow orders from their local law enforcement agencies, the Butte County Sheriff’s Office said.

The Yuba County Office of Emergency Services asked residents in the valley floor, including Marysville, a city of 12,000 people, to evacuate and take routes to the east, south or west and avoid traveling north toward Oroville.

The California Department of Water Resources said it is releasing as much as 100,000

cubic feet per second from the main, heavily damaged spillway to try to drain the lake.

Department Kevin Dossey told the Sacramento Bee that the emergency spillway was rated to handle 250,000 cubic feet per second, but it began to show weakness Sunday at a small fraction of that. Flows through the spillway peaked at 12,600 cubic feet per second at 1 a.m. Sunday and were down to 8,000 cubic feet per second by midday.

Water began flowing over the emergency spillway at the Oroville Dam in Northern California on Saturday for the first time in its nearly 50-year history after heavy rainfall.

Unexpected erosion chewed through the main spillway earlier this week, sending chunks of concrete flying and creating a 200-foot-long, 30-foot-deep hole that continues growing. Engineers don’t know what caused the cave-in, but Chris Orrock, a spokesman for the state Department of Water Resources, said it appears the dam’s main spillway has stopped crumbling even though it’s being used for water releases.

About 150 miles northeast of San Francisco, Lake Oroville is one of California’s largest man-made lakes, and the 770-foot-tall Oroville Dam is the nation’s tallest. The lake is a central piece of California’s government-run water delivery network, supplying water for agriculture in the Central Valley and residents and businesses in Southern California.

Lincoln-Way West and Minooka lead local hopes

cherron@shawmedia.com In most places, a girls basketball team that has 23 wins in the regular season not only wins a conference championship, but also receives a topseed in the IHSA sectional complex.

But as both Lincoln-Way West and Minooka know all too well, that isn’t always the case for them.

While coach Ryan White’s Warriors are 23-5, they were unable to beat Bradley-Bourbonnais for the SouthWest Suburban Conference Red Division title and now find themselves seeded behind Homewood-Flossmoor and Marist in the Class 4A Shepard Sectional.

And coach Ray Liberatore’s Indians own a 23-3 record, but they too fell just short in their league race, losing out on the Southwest Prairie Conference title to Oswego East. They are the No. 3 seed in the Class 4A East Aurora Sectional, behind Benet Academy and Oswego East.

Both West and Minooka figure to have their hands full just winning regional titles, which is another example of just how difficult this year’s postseason will be for all involved.

Things get underway Monday in both sectional complexes where area teams are involved. Eleven teams are in the East Aurora Sectional while three others are at Shepard. In addition, four local teams will be participating in the Class 3A Hillcrest Sectional.

In the East Aurora Sectional, topseed Benet Academy fell to 24-4 after losing to Hinsdale Central in its regular season finale. The Redwings are two-time defending 4A state champs.

“We obviously have had an excellent regular season but we realize that is past history,” Liberatore said. “My

biggest concern going into playoffs is that in our 26 games, we have only one game decided by less than 10 points. We are looking forward to the challenge of playing some different teams who also have had a lot of success this year.”

Assuming they avoid huge upsets in their openers, Benet hosts a regional where it will meet Plainfield North (18-9) or Lemont (18-8) in Thursday’s finals while Oswego East would face either Plainfield East (22-7) or Lockport (16-12) in the Plainfield East Regional finals.

Minooka has to beat Metea Valley or Oswego to reach the finals of the Oswego Regional while Joliet West (1511) or Waubonsie Valley will run into Bolingbrook (15-9). Yorkville (23-2) and Naperville Central are favored to meet in the Joliet Central Regional finals.

CHICAGO – Mitch Kwasigroch scored 18 points as Joliet Junior College men’s basketball team reached 20 wins Saturday with an 89-66 victory over Wilbur Wright.

Robbie Brooks scored 13 points, Jarret Gmazel 12 and Johnny Campbell, Jonathan Boatright and Richie Elias had 11 each for the Wolves (20-8, 6-6).

JJC rallied from an early deficit to lead 33-28 at the half, then exploded for 56 second-half points.

“This was the best we have shot in quite a while, and it was nice to see,” Wolves coach Joe Kuhn said. “I told our guys beforehand that I felt we were close to breaking out of our shooting slump. Whenever you have

six players in double figures and shoot 60 percent on the game, it was probably a good game.”

JJC has reached 20 wins in 11 straight season and 15 times in all under Kuhn. The Wolves host Harper on Wednesday and College of DuPage on Saturday to conclude the regular season in the final games at Fizz Wills Gymnasium.

Lockport super six bidding for another state trophy VIEWS Dick Goss Bailey Delrose is a junior.

The rest of what Lockport girls bowling coach Art Cwudzinski calls his super six consists of seniors Dana Ackerson, Monica Colon, Grace Karraker, Marissa Ramirez and Paige Reiter.

The Porters won the state championship in 2015 with all of the super six playing prominent roles. They also were front and center in 2016, when Joliet West won the title and Lockport finished third.

The state tournament will begin Friday at Cherry Bowl in Rockford, with 24 teams competing to be in the top 12 after Day 1, thus qualifying for the final six games Saturday.

Lockport figures to be there until the end.

“Everyone says it will be [Machesney Park] Harlem and us [battling for the state title],” Cwudzinski said after the Porters put the finishing touches on Saturday’s surge to the Andrew Sectional championship at Orland Bowl with a 6,334 total for six games. “But I don’t know what’s coming from down south. Regardless, I expect it to be high scoring and intense there.”

Besides the obvious talent, the Porters will have that experience factor in their corner.

“These girls [the super six] have been there,” Cwudzinski said. “They were there when we won it two years ago. They can win three state trophies in three years. They have a chance to do what I imagine very few athletes in our school’s history have done.”

“A lot of people, when they get to state, they’re shocked and overwhelmed by what they see there,” Delrose said. “Our experience will help us overcome that.”

The success they have realized has not happened by accident, however. Hard work is a key ingredient.

“That’s the thing about these girls, they work at it,” Cwudzinski said. “Very seldom do I walk into Strike N Spare or Town & Country when at least one of them is not there practicing.”

Bowling is a different game these days. A long time ago, long before high school bowling was an IHSA sport, I led an adult league with a 163 average. No joking. The pins, the lane conditions, the dedication to the sport, were not what they are now.

With five spots in the lineup, Cwudzinski will face the issue of determining which of the super six sits out first at state, and how the substitution(s) will work each day.

There are no jealousies, whatever he decides.

“You never know on a given day who is going to do the job, and you can only put five out there,” he said. “[In the sectional], we put Paige [Reiter] in the lineup in the afternoon and she shoots 700. In the regional, we subbed in Grace [Karraker] and she had a big afternoon.”

“I knew our girls had it under control in the morning,” Reiter said after the sectional. “I let them do their own thing, and I did a lot of watching, learning about the lanes.

It doesn’t matter how the lineup works out at state, it will be special if we can go out with a bang.”

“We’ve been together ever since freshman year,” Ackerson said. “We

have a lot of talent. We don’t rely on one person. If one person is having a little trouble with the lanes, we have someone waiting to come in who might be able to handle them better.”

MINOOKA ADVANCES

Besides the Lockport super six completing a run of four straight regional and sectional titles, the Joliet area also produced another big story Saturday as Minooka shot 6,012 to finish third and qualify for state.

Minooka senior Carmella Russell and her sophomore sister, Gina Russell, finished 1-2 in the individual standings with respective sixgame totals of 1,375 and 1,358. They combined for 579 pins in Game 1 as Carmella rolled a 300 and Gina a 279, both personal highs.

“I think we’re going in the right direction at the right time,” said Carmella, who added the sectional was the first tournament she ever had won. “This is my third time at

state – we didn’t go my sophomore year. I think in some other years we might have peaked almost too early. I hope we keep moving up next week.”

“Our expectation always is to get to state,” Minooka coach Frank Yudzentis said. “Everyone was at state last year except for our freshmen [Alyssa Ritchie and Julia Rayola], and we hope that experience helps us get through the grind.

“We’re definitely hitting our stride at the right time. We shot a little over 6,000 this week. Right now, our trend is going up. We’re excited; the girls are excited.”

Excited, yet realistic.

“Lockport is Lockport, Harlem is Harlem,” Yudzentis said. “They’re great teams. Our realistic goal is to make the cut, then see what we can do.”

Whether the trade noise affects Quintana during the spring and/or during the first few months of the season bears watching.

When he was hours away from signing a five-year, $26.5 million extension in the spring of 2014 (which includes club options in 2019 and 2020), Quintana had the roughest outing of his life, failing to retire all nine batters he faced in the first inning of a Cactus League outing against the Athletics.

Then 25, Quintana would admit to a rare case of nerves. Hahn would say that “it played very much on his mind during spring training.”

Aside from that hiccup, Quintana has been unaffected by everything else,

within the farm system: right-handers Zack Burdi, Michael Kopech and Spencer Adams; left-handers Jace Fry, Matt Purke, Brian Clark and Aaron Bummer; catcher Zack Collins; outfielder Courtney Hawkins and infielders Danny Hayes; and Nicky Delmonico.

Cubs face challenges that come with championship

The Cubs’ biggest need entering spring training this year?

Ask Theo Epstein, and his first answer is the one he gave last year and likely will give for the next four: pitching.

The Cubs’ never-ending quest for pitching depth aside, Epstein is quick to add one potentially enormous challenge for this year’s team – one as rare as last fall’s championship itself.

“Generally speaking, teams that win it all sometimes face unique challenges, where a lot of things come up that pull everyone associated with the organization in different directions,” the team president said. “And locking back into that team-first, competitive, connected mindset is really important.

“That’s where having such character guys is important,” he added, “and I really trust our group to get locked back

in again.”

Epstein, of course, faced the same challenge as the Boston Red Sox’s general manager in 2005, coming off Boston’s first championship in 86 years.

But it’s hard to imagine that even that Red Sox experience is a full match for the competing distractions Theo Epstein and mind-altering substance of this championship for this century-long suffering franchise and its wildly celebrated players.

These guys not only did the national talk show circuit as those Red Sox, but they twerked on “Saturday Night Live” – where they also sang “Go Cubs Go” with Bill Murray. Jimmy Buffet crashed their White House visit last month. Anthony Rizzo was recognized by somebody while vacationing in Thailand. Ben Zobrist signed autographs on

his front lawn. MVP Kris Bryant and his new bride received piles of wedding gifts from fans. Even rookie relief pitcher Carl Edwards Jr., a South Carolina native, was honored this month by the South Carolina state legislature for his part in the Cubs’ championship.

How does anyone top that?

Maybe they don’t.

But that doesn’t change the job they face as pitchers and catchers report for spring training Tuesday. And it definitely doesn’t make it any easier to win it all again as they enter a second consecutive spring favored to do exactly that.

In 14 seasons running baseball departments for two franchises, Epstein has had eight playoff teams, three World Series champs and helped end the two most storied “curses” in American team sports.

One thing his teams haven’t done is repeat, although the Red Sox won 95 games and reached the playoffs again in 2005.

“The primary reason why it’s hard to repeat is just because it’s really difficult to win the World Series,” he said. “In any given year if you’re any old team, you have a 3 percent chance. If you’re the best team, you might have a [10 percent to 12 percent] chance. It’s just hard to do.”

Throw in a post-title celebration – never mind the post-title Celebration of the Century – and the challenges can increase.

“When you win you get pulled in a lot of different directions,” Epstein said.

“And there can be a tendency to at some point, no matter how high the character, to start thinking about yourself a little bit more.

“You have to work really hard – we all do – to avoid any kind of organizational arrogance, any sense of entitlement, to really understand that of all the great thing that happened last year, the most special aspect was we all got to be a part of something bigger than ourselves.”

White Sox pitchers and catchers report to spring training Tuesday at Camelback Ranch in Glendale, Arizona. It will be a group that includes the most closely watched trade candidate in baseball, left-hander Jose Quintana.

Steady, focused and resolute, Quintana calmly answered questions about his precarious position as the Sox’s most valuable trade chip during SoxFest, saying he not only hopes to remain but expects to stay on the South Side.

It seems more a matter of when, not if, Quintana is politely shown the door.

Although deals are indeed made during spring training, the big ones involving players of Quintana’s stature are not commonplace. If he stays, look for him to start Opening Day (April 3 against the Tigers), then go through the trade-rumor mill again as the nonwaiver Aug. 1 deadline approaches. Barring injury or a first-time sag in performance, the 2016 All-Star figures to bring the return general manager Rick Hahn is fixed on securing.

Hahn’s objective? Get a similar package of prospects to what Chris Sale and Adam Eaton yielded to check off the goal of trading the Sox’s top three players, according to wins above replacement, as the first phase of the rebuilding plan.

When the time comes, Quintana will be missed. In the meantime, with Sale gone, he’ll be the leader and ace of the pitching staff starting Tuesday. Barring a trade, that is.

Northwestern secures big win, beats No. 7 Wisconsin The ASSOCIATED PRESS

MADISON, Wis. – Bryant McIntosh scored 25 points, and defensive-minded Northwestern beat No. 7 Wisconsin, 66-59, on Sunday, securing an important win for the school’s bid to make its first NCAA Tournament.

Dererk Pardon added 11 for the Wildcats (19-6, 8-4), who confounded the Big Ten-leading Badgers by doubling dominant big man Ethan Happ.

Nigel Hayes scored nine of his 13 points in the second half for the Badgers (21-4, 10-2), who had their eightgame winning streak snapped.

The Badgers didn’t let up despite falling behind by 10 with 1:16 remaining, closing to 60-55 after Zak Showalter hit two foul shots with 46 seconds left.

But McIntosh followed with two free throws with 42 seconds left, and Wisconsin ran out of time.

McIntosh hit the big shots late, including a drive and basket with 1:58 left to give Northwestern an eightpoint lead after Hayes’ twisting layup attempt on the other end glanced off the rim.

Wisconsin opened the second half with a 10-0 run, looking as if it had

solved its first-half offensive woes.

Northwestern pulled away for good, answering with an 8-0 run capped by Pardon’s dunk with 13:24 left to take a 39-32 lead.

Just as important for the Wildcats were the double teams on Happ that forced turnovers and threw the Badgers out of rhythm.

Minus leading scorer Scottie Lindsey because of illness for a third straight game, Northwestern relied on defense to end a two-game skid.

Big picture: Northwestern: The Wildcats (40.3 percent) and Badgers (40.5 percent) led the Big Ten in field goal defense coming into the game. Wisconsin got off to a decent start from the field before the Wildcats knocked the offense out of rhythm with double-teams on Happ. Northwestern held Wisconsin to just two field goals over the final 10 minutes of the first half to take a 31-22 lead at halftime.

Wisconsin: Happ isn’t known for his jumper. But he made an open 17-footer early in the first half that had Badgers fans going nuts. One of the top big men in the Big Ten, Happ could be even more difficult to guard if the 6-foot10 forward poses even the slightest threat of being able to hit from out-

side the post. But double-teams were the bigger problem Sunday, especially when Happ got the ball deep in the post. The Badgers weren’t able to hit enough shots from the open man.

Michigan 75, Indiana 63: At Bloomington, Ind., Michigan coach John Beilein finally got to celebrate outside Ann Arbor.

The fact that it came at this time, in February, and at this place, Indiana, made it even sweeter for the Wolverines.

Derrick Walton Jr. scored 25 points and Moritz Wagner had 11 points and 10 rebounds Sunday to lead Michigan to a victory – their first road win of the season and a rare victory in Bloomington.

“This is a hard place for every team that’s ever played in the Big Ten to win at,” said Beilein, who now has two wins in 10 seasons at Assembly Hall. “It’s so good for us to be able to come out of here, get a lead, keep a lead.”

Now the Wolverines (16-9, 6-6 Big Ten) will get a reprieve from the debate over all the things they supposedly couldn’t do.

Michigan came into the game 0-6 on

the road this season, 1-17 in Bloomington since 1996-97 and without a season sweep of the Hoosiers since 1994-95.

By keeping the struggling Hoosiers (15-11, 5-8) at an arm’s length, they erased all those bitter memories.

At Indiana, meanwhile, the looming questions aren’t going away.

Johnson wasn’t the only frustrated player.

While De’Ron Davis scored 13 points and Josh Newkirk and Juwan Morgan each had 11, leading scorer James Blackmon Jr. finished with six points and the Hoosiers never led after giving up the first five points.

The only serious challenge came when they charged back from a 35-25 halftime deficit to make it 41-35 on Blackmon’s 3-pointer with 13:38 to play.

But Michigan answered by making its next seven shots to rebuild a 56-43 advantage and Indiana couldn’t get closer than eight over the final 8½ minutes.

D.J. Wilson added 13 points for Michigan as Walton topped the 20-point mark for the fifth consecutive game – Michigan’s longest streak since Nik Stauskas also did it in five straight games during 2013-14.

Wolves roll short-handed Bulls to help Thibs to season sweep

MINNEAPOLIS – Andrew Wiggins scored 27 points and Karl-Anthony Towns added 22 to help the Minnesota Timberwolves beat the severely short-handed Bulls, 117-89, on Sunday.

Ricky Rubio had 17 points, 11 assists and six rebounds and Minnesota shot 54 percent to help coach Tom Thibodeau sweep the season series against his former team. Gorgui Dieng added 10 points and 13 rebounds.

Doug McDermott scored 16 points and made four 3-pointers for the Bulls, who were missing Jimmy Butler, Dwyane Wade, Nikola Mirotic and Paul Zipser with injuries. The Bulls turned the ball over 18 times, were outrebounded, 46-35, and were outscored, 56-38, in the paint.

Thibodeau’s acrimonious split from the Bulls is well-documented, but much of the drama was addressed during Minnesota’s visit to Chicago in December. The Timberwolves overcame a 21-point deficit to win that

game, which started a 13-10 stretch that helped them climb back into the playoff picture in the muddled Western Conference.

And while the Wolves have taken another step back recently, that December meeting was a prime example of the dysfunction plaguing the Bulls since Thibodeau was fired. Injuries, a lack of shooting and team chemistry issues have weighed on them all season long as they try to stay afloat in the East.

Badly outmanned Sunday, the Bulls were put away quickly. The Wolves led by 19 in the first quarter and 26 in the first half as Rubio directed traffic and found Wiggins and Towns for dunks in transition and open jumpers.

The Bulls made their first five 3-pointers of the third quarter to cut the deficit to 13, but Thibodeau kept his starters in deep into the fourth quarter to push the lead back to 30.

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Jordan Spieth soaked up every step of scenery on the 18th hole at Pebble Beach, one of the prettiest places in golf and even more spectacular on a Sunday when the only work left is to hoist the crystal trophy.

All that was missing Jordan from the AT&T Pebble Spieth Beach Pro-Am were the highlights.

That’s just how Spieth wanted it.

Staked to a six-shot lead, Spieth never gave anyone much of a chance by putting for birdie on all but one hole.

The lone highlight was his 30-foot birdie putt on the 17th hole with the Pacific Ocean as a backdrop, and by then it was already over.

“Played a lot of boring golf today,” Spieth said, “which was exactly what we needed.”

He closed with a 2-under 70 for a fourshot victory over former U.S. Amateur champion Kelly Kraft, a close friend from Dallas who couldn’t get a putt to fall that might have put a little pressure on Spieth.

As easy and clinical as Spieth made it look, it was no less special.

“This is a bucket-list place to win – here, Augusta National, St. Andrews, there’s only a few in the world. It feels really special. It was amazing walking up the 18th green knowing that we were going to win. It’s just such a unique position. I tried to soak in.”

It was his first 54-hole lead on the PGA Tour since the Masters, where he lost a five-shot lead on the back nine.

On this day, Spieth thought back to the 2000 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach and the way Tiger Woods closed out his record 15-shot victory by trying not to drop a shot in the final round. Woods didn’t make a bogey over the final 26 holes in severe conditions. On a course saturated by rain, Spieth played the final 28 holes without a bogey. His longest par putt Sunday was 5 feet.

“That’s a dream round when you’re leading by a bunch,” Spieth said.

The 23-year-old Texan won for the ninth time in his PGA Tour and became the first player since Woods with that many victories before turning 24. Woods won 15 times. Equally impressive is that Spieth won for the fifth time by at least three shots.

“He didn’t have his best stuff, but he did exactly what he was supposed to do

and played a great round of golf,” said Brandt Snedeker, a two-time Pebble winner who played in the final group with Spieth and shot 70 to finish fourth.

“Sometimes those are the hardest rounds of golf, when you have the lead that he had. It was fun to watch him do his thing out there.”

Kraft, who closed with a 67, settled for a couple of consolation prizes. The $777,600 for second place was nearly double his earnings from his rookie season last year. He also earned a spot at Riviera next week in the Genesis Open.

U.S. Open champion Dustin Johnson closed with a 68 to finish alone in third, enough to have a chance to reach No. 1 next week if he were to win.

Spieth’s only other birdie was on the par-5 second when he two-putted from 12 feet.

One day after he took only 23 putts on the bumpy greens of Pebble Beach, he didn’t make hard anything, and didn’t look to be trying to make them from above the hole to avoid putting himself in a position to drop shots.

No one could put any pressure on him over the opening seven holes, which is where rallies begin at Pebble Beach.

If there was a key shot for Spieth, it came on the eighth hole. He tugged his tee shot into the wet rough to the left, facing a 210-yard shot over the ocean and into the breeze to one of the toughest greens at Pebble. It came out perfectly, 20 feet from the cup for another routine par.

“I was very, very excited once that ball landed on the green,” Spieth said.

“That was really avoiding a big number there. That could have been a double or triple very, very easily, if that doesn’t come out the right way. So that was the shot of the day for me.”

Spieth became the seventh straight PGA Tour winner in his 20s, and he got back into the hunt for No. 1. He had fallen far enough behind that even by beating a strong field at Pebble Beach, it will not move him from No. 6.

Jason Day, the world No. 1, bounced back from his 75 on Saturday with a 67 to tie for fifth with Gary Woodland (65) and Torrey Pines winner Jon Rahm (68).

Spieth has four top 10s in his four starts this year and already appears to be peaking as the Masters gets closer.

He has shot under par in all 16 rounds he has played this year, 17 in a row dating to the Tour Championship last fall.

The only disappointment for Spieth was not winning the pro-am with country singer Jake Owen. They tied for third, four shots behind Ken Duke and Carson Daly.

Because a treadmill is powered by a machine, not your body, the hamstring muscles are not used as much – something you may notice if you normally run on a treadmill and then decide to go running outside. In that case, to prevent an injury, slow your pace.

A significant benefit from running on a treadmill is the belt of the treadmill is much more forgiving than the concrete of the sidewalk. While there has been no long-term study regarding the benefit of treadmill running on the joints, it stands to reason exercising on a treadmill could decrease the incidence of knee and back injuries.

Alternatively, one definite positive from outdoor running is it’s less monotonous than treadmill running. The changes of scenery and terrain keep things interesting. When I run on a trail, I constantly am looking at the rocks I have to avoid, and I often have to move laterally to follow the trail. When I get to the top of the mountain, looking down at the expanse of earth below me, I get a perspective that is much different than running on a treadmill. This cannot be measured, but it motivates me to run again. If you like running or walking on a treadmill, by all means continue doing this. The cardiovascular benefits are similar to outdoor exercise, and it may be less hard on your joints. The most important thing is to take the time and exercise, whether it be inside or outside.

Dear Doctor: Is walking or running on a treadmill as good as walking or running on concrete streets or sidewalks?

Dear Reader: This is an interesting question, because the definition of “as good as” is quite ambiguous. Good can be defined as having cardiovascular, or other, health benefits, but it also can be defined as having mental or social health benefits, such as those that come from running or walking with another person. For the purposes of this question, let’s look at the cardiovascular aspects.

A 1985 study in the journal Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise measured the amount of oxygen consumed during both treadmill running and outdoor running. The level of oxygen consumption, termed VO2, is a measure of energy expenditure with exercise.

The subjects ran 950 meters on a treadmill and outdoors. The subjects also ran at varying speeds and at different elevation grades.

The investigators found no difference in the amounts of oxygen consumed with either the outdoor or treadmill running. This was consistently seen, even when there were changes in speed or elevation grade.

A 1996 study in the Journal of Sports Sciences similarly looked at the differences in VO2 in nine athletes who ran both outside and on treadmills at varying speeds and elevation grades. This study showed some significant differences in the VO2 between outside and treadmill running. Overall, those who exercised outside consumed more oxygen than those on a treadmill. This may be partially related to the wind resistance seen with outdoor exercise.

The authors concluded running outside on flat terrain was similar to treadmill running at a 1 percent elevation grade. So, if you want to equate your treadmill running to what you might experience outside, place your treadmill at a 1 percent grade.

I thought it was a great idea; a lot of my co-workers were unsure and wanted more information about what specifically we would do. My boss said she would get more information and send it out to us. However, a few of my co-workers are outright opposed to the idea and think they shouldn’t be required to do it.

A year ago when this came up, one of them said they shouldn’t have to give up their free time. I think it’s wrong to turn down a chance to help others when they are able. A novel event for mixed teams was held from October 31 to November 2, 2016. Four teams played online in three venues. The Bridge Base Online (BBO) team was at the Silver Cloud Broadway Hotel in Seattle; Lavazza competed at the company’s research center in Turin, Italy; and the Chinese Contract Bridge Association (CCBA) and Yeh played in the Beijing International Convention Center.

The event consisted of a round robin of 16-board matches. The final result was Lavazza 83.64 victory points, CCBA 65.98, Yeh 49.59 and BBO 40.79.

The highlight for the BBO team was the participation of Bill Gates, who partnered Sharon Osberg. Their teammates were Jill Meyers-Bob Hamman and Sheri Winestock-Fred Gitelman.

Today’s deal was one that Gates played. At his table, North-South were “happy” with three clubs, made with an overtrick.

But in the given auction, Meyers bid a game-invitational three clubs, and Hamman went for game in no-trump. West led the spade two: three, ace, six. East returned the spade nine: king, four, heart five.

What did Hamman do next?

Declarer could have gotten lucky in clubs, but knew that that was against the odds -- 16.96 percent, to be precise. Instead, Hamman played a diamond to the ace and a heart to his 10. With hearts 3-3, West had no defense, but she surprisingly led another spade, so Hamman immediately claimed nine tricks: three spades, one heart, four diamonds and one club.

That gave BBO 10 international match points against Lavazza.
