First Community of Joliet acquired by Busey Bank

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A longtime Joliet-based bank will soon be owned by Busey Bank.

First Community Financial Bank of Joliet and Champaign-based Busey Bank jointly announced Monday the signing of a definitive agreement for Busey to acquire the Joliet company through a merger transaction.

The transaction is expected to close mid-year, according to a news release from Busey. Upon its completion, the merging of First Community with and into Busey is expected in late 2017.

Roy Thygesen, First Community’s president and CEO, will continue to lead the company through the merger. Once the acquisition is completed, Thygesen will be named Busey’s executive vice president and market president of northern Illinois, according to Busey.

“Joining two of the best community

banks in Illinois together offers significant growth possibilities for the combined customer, associate, community and shareholder base,” stated Van Dukeman, First Busey president and CEO, in a news release.

The merger will expand Busey’s footprint in the southwest suburban region as it acquires First Community’s nine branches in Joliet, Plainfield, Homer Glen, Channahon, Naperville, Burr Ridge, Mazon, Braidwood and Diamond.

Busey has 27 locations in Illinois, 13 in Missouri, five in southwest Florida and one in Indiana.

“We are excited that First Community customers will be able to take advantage of an expanded array of sophisticated commercial, consumer and wealth management services and capabilities,” Thygesen stated.

Thygesen stated the merger will give First Community the “lending capacity to support growth in our clients’ credit

needs for years to come, delivered in the community banking approach they have come to expect, by the same bankers they know.”

First Community opened in 2004 at Black Road and 129th Infantry Drive in Joliet.

Its founding officers included developer George Barr, attorney and Joliet JackHammers chief executive Michael Hansen, auto dealer Terry D’Arcy, furniture store owner Frank Turk and insurance executive John Manner.

The company has grown since it opened. Last year, First Community merged with Mazon State Bank, expanding its services into Grundy County.

In 2009, First Community’s parent company obtained $22 million in federal money through the Troubled Asset Relief Program that was established to stabilize the nation’s financial system, restart economic growth and prevent avoidable foreclosures during the Great Recession.

Judge: Grimes’ Lockport Township arrest was justified

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A judge on Tuesday ruled police officers had probable cause to stop a suspected drug dealer from driving away while they searched his friend’s house.

On the night of Oct. 9, 2014, Cleveland V. Grimes, 43, pulled into a driveway in the 300 block of Connor Avenue in Lockport Township, but put the car in re- Cleveland verse when he was told to V. up to him in the next block. Grimes reportedly struggled with police and was charged with aggravated battery, improper lane use and driving under the influence. Grimes has filed a federal lawsuit against the police and maintains he was not the aggressor.

“I was being nosy as I drove by. I [saw] a couple people in the yard with flashlights then saw them jump in the van, hit the lights and make a U-turn,” Grimes testified Tuesday.

He denied pulling into the driveway.

“Did the officers state the reason for pulling you over? Ask to see your driver’s license? Question where you were going?” defense attorney Chris Rouskey asked Grimes, who said they did not.

over based on past history they’ve had,” Rouskey said.

Will County Assistant State’s Attorney Daniel Egan questioned Grimes’ recollection of that night, noting hospital tests show his blood alcohol content was twice the legal limit. Judge Daniel Kennedy agreed that information resulting from Grimes’ arrest will be admissible when the case comes to trial.

Grimes currently is serving an eightand-a-half year sentence after pleading guilty in 2015 to charges of delivery of drugs and unlawful use of a weapon.

In October 2010, the Joliet Narcotics Unit had an undercover informant wearing a body wire meet with Grimes to purchase $1,200 worth of cocaine, prosecutors said. Two months later, police searched Grimes’ then-home in Bolingbrook and found a 9 mm Luger he admitted was his.

COUNTY: SPAY AND NEUTER PETS Almost 14,000 pets treated since 2007

bokon@shawmedia.com SHOREWOOD – Dr. Robert Buchanan had just finished spaying a cat, which isn’t exactly the most pleasant subject to discuss.

But Buchanan, a veterinarian at the Animal Care Center of Shorewood, has been doing this for 15 years. And the alternative, he noted, can be very unpleasant.

“We have to euthanize so many animals each year that aren’t placed into homes,” Buchanan said. “In helping to control the population, you’re controlling the unwanted loss of pets.”

The social good accomplished by neutering and spaying pets is such that Will County Animal Control provides a $40 discount for pet owners who have the procedure done in February, June and October.

Will County residents can use the discount until Feb. 28.

Pets that have been treated since the program began in 2007 number just more than 13,700.

Buchanan said there are many good reasons for having pets neutered or spayed.

Male dogs are easier to train and less likely to roam away from home if they have been neutered.

“Dogs can smell a million times better than we can,” Buchanan said. “If there’s a female in heat within a few miles, he’s going to go and find her.”

Spayed female dogs and cats are less likely to develop uterine infections and mammary tumors, according to veterinarians. Males are less likely to develop prostate problems.

“From a health standpoint, it’s one of the best things you can do for a pet,” said Dr. LeRoy Schild, director of Will County Animal Control. “There are a lot of good reasons for doing it. There are not a lot of good reasons for not doing it.”

So why do pet owners with no plans for breeding leave pets untreated?

“I think some people think it’s a great idea to let their children experience the birthing of puppies and kittens,” Schild said. “Some people think

it’s a macho thing not to have a male dog neutered.”

Recognizing the cost of dealing with an uncontrolled pet population, Will County charges more for registering unfixed pets – $25 – than fixed, which are $8. The additional money the county collects from registering unfixed

pets is used to fund the $40 discount program.

Schild believes the program helps the cause. He also believes the trend is toward a more controlled pet population.

Plainfield preschoolers learn about careers

fsarver@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Students at the Bonnie McBeth Early Learning Center recently learned about baking cakes and were treated to some cake as well.

Veronica Medina, who runs I Bake Cakes in Chicago, came to Lauren Golat’s preschool class Tuesday to talk about the cakes she’s made and brought some for the students and teachers.

Medina’s visit is one of many that will occur as part of community helpers month at Bonnie McBeth. For the month, people of various professions, some of whom are Bonnie McBeth parents, will visit the school to talk about their professions.

Golat has had a visit from a pharmacist, and next the students will talk with a police officer.

“It’s more than just reading a book and obviously it’s a hands-on experience for the kids,” Golat said.

“All of those cakes, I make them for people. Even big cakes like these – this is for a wedding,” she said.

“Oh my God,” some of the students said in excitement.

Medina showed the students some of the tools of her trade, such as a bowl and spatula, and spoke about the ingredients and techniques that go into making a cake. She said that when the cake is taken out of the oven, it has to be filled and frosted.

“And then the fun starts with decorating,” she said.

Medina also unveiled several small cakes she made – one had a Valentine’s Day design – and brought along small cupcakes for the students to eat.

“It’s a home-to-school connection because the parents get to explain in preschool terms what they’re doing, so that their child understands their careers,” Golat said.

Kayak company makes first Second strike for club spot step toward Plainfield business JOLIET CITY COUNCIL

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – It’s back to the drawing board for the old Crabigale’s comedy club spot, the downtown building that has been tough to put back into use even before the city of Joliet acquired it in 2001.

The city council Tuesday revoked a redevelopment agreement for the building after Leaf Capital Investments missed deadlines to get bank loans to finance the project, city officials said.

This marks the second time that plans for a new restaurant at the building were abandoned before they got started.

In 2014, the owner of Lockdown Bar & Grill, located in the Ukrainian Village neighborhood of Chicago, called off his plan to put a Joliet version of the restaurant in the building at 1 E. Cass St. Leaf Capital is associated with The Vault Cafe and Bar in Lemont.

Councilman Larry Hug said Leaf Capital had “a good proposal to have an authentic Cajun restaurant. I would have gone.”

Hug chairs the council’s Economic Development Committee, which is likely to review the terms of the city’s next request for proposals to redevel-

op the building.

The council approved the Leaf Capital agreement in June, pending the company’s ability to obtain financing for the project.

Economic Development Director Steve Jones said that agreement will serve as a template for the next request for proposals.

“I already have two parties who have expressed some interest in it,” Jones said.

The agreement basically hands over the building to the developer once $300,000 in renovations have been made.

The city’s interest since acquiring the building has always been to preserve it by making it worthwhile for a private developer to fix it up. Called the Loughran Building, it was built in 1890 and is located on the corner of Chicago Street, which is the main street downtown.

The city initially sold it at a nominal price to the late Brian Graf, who started the Crabigale’s comedy club, which went out of business in 2005. It has not reopened since.

Graf remodeled the first floor of the building for his comedy club and was beginning to work on the upper two floors when his enterprise failed. The building went into foreclosure, and the city became the owner again.

mmallory@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – A kayak company may be coming to Plainfield this year.

Troy Cooper, owner of Naperville Kayak, approached the village to expand his business.

The Plainfield Village Board voted Monday to authorize the village attorney to prepare a concession agreement with Cooper. It would allow him to maintain a kayak service at Electric Park West along the DuPage River.

Cooper also is seeking an agreement with the Plainfield Township Park District for use of the 135th Street canoe/ kayak launch.

Plainfield Kayak will have beginner classes taught by certified instructors, rental services and guided group trips.

Naperville Kayak has been operating four years and has nearly doubled or tripled its business each year, according to village documents.

Trustee Margie Bonuchi said the business is working out well in Naperville and people already kayak through the Plainfield area.

“I’m in full support of this and hope it pans out as well as it did in Naperville,” Bonuchi said.

Trustee Ed O’Rourke thanked Cooper for bringing the business to Plain-

field.

“I think it will bring a new recreation opportunity for our residents,” he said.

Kayaking will be in season from May through October and hours will be from 7 a.m. to dusk.

Plainfield Riverfront Foundation Executive Director Robert Epley wrote a letter to the village in support of the business. It stated Plainfield Kayak will offer a benefit to the village and its residents through enhanced recreational activity, along with the economic impact of people visiting Plainfield to go kayaking.

Village Attorney Jim Harvey said Plainfield would be joined in any legal action toward Plainfield Kayak, as the owner of the property. The village of Plainfield and the Plainfield Riverfront Foundation will be insured by Plainfield Kayak’s insurance policy.

Also Monday, the board granted two liquor licenses to Freedom Brothers Pizzeria & Alehouse, to be located at 11914 S. Route 59, Suite 112.

In addition, the board approved a contract with Pro-Temp of Illinois Inc., the low bidder to complete the 127th Street Lake Michigan Water Pumping Station variable frequency drive replacement at a cost of $333,300. The current equipment is past its useful life, according to village staff.

Former Coal City, Carbon Hill resident charged with ex-wife’s murder

eschelkopf@shawmedia.com WHEATON – A 56-year-old man with ties to Coal City and Carbon Hill is in custody on a $2 million bond after being charged with the Jan. 30 murder of his ex-wife in Wheaton.

Lee Leinweber has been charged with one count of first-degree murder.

According to Grundy County court records, Leinweber has previously lived in Coal City and Carbon Hill, although Wheaton police said he has been homeLee less for some time.

About 6:45 p.m. Sat- Leinweber urday, Wheaton officers responded to a call of a deceased woman at 1321 Woodcutter Lane, Unit A, the home of Leinweber’s ex-wife, 56-year-old Erin Leinweber, according to a news release from the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Once inside the home, officers discovered the body of Erin Leinweber.

An autopsy conducted by the DuPage County Coroner’s Office revealed she had suffered numerous injuries, including multiple stab wounds about the neck, broken ribs and injuries consistent with a beating about her face, the news release stated.

In addition, she was found with a plastic garbage bag in her mouth and her head was covered by two plastic

garbage bags. An investigation led by the Wheaton Police Department led authorities to Lee Leinweber, according to the news release.

On Jan. 30, Lee Leinweber was at his ex-wife’s home when a verbal argument between the two allegedly turned violent. It is alleged Lee Leinweber attacked his ex-wife, beating her about the face and neck, and choked her until she fell to the floor, according to the news release. He then allegedly dropped his body onto hers, breaking her ribs.

Lee Leinweber then allegedly forced a plastic garbage bag into her mouth and placed two plastic garbage bags over her head. It is further alleged that Lee Leinweber then retrieved a knife from the kitchen and repeatedly stabbed Erin Leinweber. After murdering Erin Leinweber, Lee Leinweber allegedly stole her money, credit cards and car, and fled the scene, the news release stated.

On Sunday, Lee Leinweber was located in Ottawa and taken into custody.

Investigators are still attempting to locate Erin Leinweber’s vehicle, a red 2009 Kia Spectra with Illinois plate V264403, which may have a Hillary Clinton bumper sticker on the rear.

Anyone who sees the vehicle should immediately call 911.

Lee Leinweber’s next court appearance is set for Feb. 21 in front of Judge Robert Miller.

Two arrested after drugs, guns found in safe in Joliet garage

JOLIET – Two people were arrested Monday after police reportedly found drugs and guns while searching a Joliet residence.

Deputy Chief Ed Gregory said tactical officers, patrol officers and officers on the Neighborhood Oriented Policing Team executed a search warrant at 7:48 Jarvin J. p.m. in the 100 block of Davis Comstock Street.

“The warrant also included the garage on the property. In the garage was a safe that contained cocaine, cannabis and three handguns – two loaded revolvers and a semi-automatic handgun with a 30-round clip that had 14 rounds in it,” Gregory said.

Police also seized digital scales, plastic bags and cash, Gregory said.

Jarvin J. Davis, 24, of Joliet, was arrested on a charge of manufacture or delivery of marijuana. A 17-year-old Crest Hill boy was arrested on a charge of delivery of drugs.

Gregory said charges related to the firearms may be filed after fingerprint evidence comes back from the crime lab.

JOLIET – Firefighters responded Monday to two unrelated fires in Joliet.

The first occurred at 9:20 a.m. in a third-floor apartment at the Evergreen Terrace public housing complex. Joliet Fire Department Battalion Chief Jeff Carey said a resident left a “plug-in candle” unattended and returned to find the living room burning and smoke detectors going off.

Third-floor residents were evacuated, while firefighters extinguished the blaze.

Firefighters remained on the scene about 90 minutes, Carey said.

At 8:48 p.m., firefighters were called to the 1700 block of Cumberland Drive, where a truck caught fire in a detached garage.

“The 47-year-old man and his two sons had gone out to the store and come home when the boys returned to the garage and saw smoke and flames coming from underneath the truck,” Joliet Police Department Deputy Chief Ed Gregory said.

Carey said the fire destroyed the garage and spread to the attic of the house, causing heavy damage. The siding on two neighboring houses and other vehicles in the driveway were also damaged.

Two firefighters suffered minor injuries putting out the blaze. Firefighters were at the scene for two hours. Carey said the

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Housing Authority of Joliet officials defended hiring practice at the Water’s Edge construction project to a city council that expressed frustration with the situation.

HAJ officials at a city council meeting Tuesday said nearly 60 percent of the jobs and contracts on the site are local and about 8 percent of the contracts have gone to contractors run by minorities or women. But Mayor Bob O’Dekirk and council members questioned whether that was enough.

At times, they urged general contractor Carlson Construction to favor Joliet contractors in the bidding process in or-

der to award more work locally.

“We’re Joliet, and we help Joliet,” Councilwoman Brook Hernandez Brewer said.

The presentation had been requested by the mayor last month because of ongoing complaints about local hiring on the housing construction project.

Councilman Terry Morris was particularly disturbed that much of the hiring that was considered local included towns outside of Joliet.

“We sat down and talked before one brick was laid, before any dirt was moved,” Morris said. “All I asked – and I believe what other council members and the mayor asked – was to use as many Joliet contractors and people as possible.”

The city waived building permit fees and water tap-on fees for the project to help the development, something that Morris emphasized.

“You didn’t go to Bolingbrook for incentives. You didn’t go to Frankfort and Plainfield for incentives,” he said.

“I have had it up to here.”

The mayor and city council members have met with black contractors and workers contending that they have not had a fair chance at jobs at Water’s Edge.

HAJ officials have argued that they and Carlson Construction, which is based in Joliet, have followed federal guidelines in awarding contracts for the project.

John Chow brought an email from an official with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development commending the housing authority for following federal guidelines on its Liberty Meadow Estates project and expressing confidence that it would do so on other jobs.

Chow said the email was a response to a complaint from a local contractor.

“This is the finding that we got from HUD,” Chow said.

He said Carlson Construction has re-bid jobs in an effort to attract more minority contractors to the project.

O’Dekirk, however, said the problem was that not enough local people in the neighborhood were getting jobs as they watch the project being built.

Braidwood woman gets prison sentence for fatal DUI crash

JOLIET – A Braidwood woman was sentenced Tuesday to four-and-a-half years in prison for a crash that killed a Shorewood man last year.

Donna L. Durkin, 55, made a blind plea last week before Judge Daniel Kennedy to one count of aggravated

driving under the influence in exchange for other charges being dismissed. Defense attorney Ragan Freitag said Durkin, of the 100 block of East Cermak Road, had no prior criminal Donna L. Durkin record.

Repurposed courthouse would need large overhaul

mmallory@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Talks continued among Will County officials about what to do with the existing county courthouse when the new Will County Judicial Complex opens in a few years.

Jason Dwyer, of judicial complex design firm Wight & Co., said in Tuesday’s meeting of the Will County Board’s capital improvements committee that if the county wants to make the existing courthouse building last decades longer, it should consider a full renovation.

Dwyer said there have been discussions about keeping some court functions in the old courthouse, including some courtrooms. But he said having three buildings with courtrooms may present a staffing and security concern.

“I’ve been doing this 20 years,” he said. “We see fewer abandoned pets. Every year it gets better and better. But we still have too many pets having their random litters.”

He added there hasn’t been enough discussion yet to determine the best use for the existing courthouse building.

“It’s a solid building, but it also needs a lot of investment to upgrade the building, too,” Dwyer said. “I think the key is to look at exactly what you want to put in there and do an evaluation of how extensively you need to renovate and modify the building to accommodate those uses.”

The committee talked about whether the whole building would be renovated or if one or two floors would be “mothballed.” Dwyer said he wasn’t comfortable naming an exact dollar figure on what a renovation might cost compared with a demolition.

County Board Speaker Jim Moustis, R-Frankfort, said he couldn’t see how any courtrooms could stay in use in the

building. But he said he’d like to see it renovated for an additional 50 years of use. The building opened in 1969.

In other news, a request for qualifications sent out by the county in search of a firm to design the new Will County Health Department building received “substantial” interest, saidWill County Executive’s Office deputy chief of staff Dave Tkac.

A selection committee will review interested firms Feb. 21 and then trim the list down for formal interviews.

Tuesday was also Ragan Freitag’s last meeting as chairwoman of the capital improvements committee. She will begin her new role as County Board chief of staff Feb. 27.

It’s unclear how the departure of Freitag, R-Wilmington, will affect committee assignments.

Moustis said he will notify Minority Leader Herb Brooks Jr., D-Joliet, of a rearrangement of committee leadership.

Board member Beth Rice, D-Bolingbrook, asked whether Majority Whip Mike Fricilone, R-Homer Glen, was going to become chairman of the capital improvements committee.

Fricilone is currently chairman of the finance committee and vice chairman of the capital improvements committee. Committee leadership is decided by the speaker.

The new Will County Public Safety Complex is still on track for completion by the end of the year. A link to a live camera is up on the county board’s website, WillCountyBoard.com. The camera periodically takes pictures of the construction site as a way for people to keep up to date on its progress.

Joliet Township Animal Control takes in about 2,000 lost or abandoned pets a year, Director Sarah Gimbel said.

About 40 percent of those are returned to owners who claim the lost pets. But even lost pets are more likely not to have been spayed or neutered, creating the inclination to roam.

“Seventy percent of animals who end

up in our facility are not fixed,” Gimbel said. “Even though they are owned, they are not fixed.”

Getting a dog or cat spayed or neutered can also be expensive, costing between $300 and $400, which may be a big reason pet owners put it off.

“I definitely think that’s a deterring factor for sure. That’s a large chunk of

money to put forward,” Gimbel said. “It gets delayed and people forget about it.”

Joliet Township Animal Control has its own year-round discount program for neutering and spaying. Gimbel said discount programs serve a need.

“We do get pretty regular calls – people asking for a low-cost option,” she said.

Born: December 24, 1927; in Joliet, IL Died: February 3, 2017; in Morris, IL Doris M. Boyle (nee Bridge), age 89 years, passed away with her family by her side on Friday, February 3, 2017 at Park Pointe Healthcare in Morris, IL. She was born in Joliet on December 24, 1927.

Doris was a graduate of Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She was employed by the Joliet Chamber of Commerce for several years and later at Hufford Junior High School before retiring. She was a member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, the Paulites and volunteered through Mended Hearts at St. Joseph’s Medical Center for 17 years.

Doris was a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother.

Preceded in death by her loving husband of 65 years, Robert E. Boyle (2016); and her parents, Clark and Ethel (nee Fredrickson) Bridge.

Joseph is preceded in death by his loving wife, Florence (nee Bostjancic) of 65 years; his parents, John and Mary (nee Pavlich); three brothers, John Jr., Thomas, and Edward; two sisters, Mary (nee Metesh), and Annie; and two grandchildren, Jennifer Briski-Hilgenberg, and Matthew Fracaro Jr. Joseph was a lifelong parishioner of St. Anne Catholic Church in Crest Hill. He served the Parish family as an Usher for about 40 years.

He was a member of the Moose, Elks, KSKJ Society, and the Croatian Cultural Club. Joseph retired from Schulze and Burch Biscuit Company with 42 years of service; Polk Brothers, 17 years of service; and First Midwest Bank, 15 years of service.

Joseph and his wife were avid ballroom dancers, dancing every weekend especially to polkas. Joseph’s love of music particularly the Big Band Era encouraged his children to pursue their own musical endeavors of whom he was very proud.

Joseph loved talking to people and had a wonderful sense of humor making him an excellent salesman. Joseph also loved tending

to his flower and vegetable gardens.

Joseph was a very hardworking and devoted father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother. He was extremely proud of his whole family. He will be truly missed.

In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Anne Catholic Church would be greatly appreciated.

Born: May 26, 1923 Died: January 30, 2017

Joan Elizabeth Lewandowski (nee Batson), age 93, of Joliet, IL, passed away on Monday, January 30, 2017 at her residence.

Joan was born May 26, 1923, in Leicester, England, the daughter of John Thomas and Kate Jones Batson. She married Walter Lewandowski, a member of the U.S. Air Force stationed in England, on October 21, 1944, at Holy Cross Church in Leicester, England. Joan came to the U.S. in 1946 with her infant son Vincent via the S.S. Cristobal, one of many World War II transport ships that carried war brides and their children from England to the States.

Survivors include her son, Vincent Lewandowski of Joliet, IL; two grandsons, Scott (Nancy) Lewandowski of Joliet, IL and Steven (Michelle) Lewandowski of Rockdale, IL; 5 great-grandchildren, Abigail, Blake, and Cara Lewandowski and Logan and Kylie Lewandowski; a brother, Lawrence Batson of Leicester, England; dear friend and former daughter-in-law, Barbara (Baron) Westphal of Crest Hill, IL; dear friend and caring neighbor, Georgene Williams of Joliet, IL; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and 10 brothers and sisters.

Joan worked for S.O.S. and Miles Laboratory in Bedford Park, IL, for over 20 years and was also a housekeeper for several business and offices in downtown Joliet. While she truly enjoyed her work years, she was happiest in her roles as loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. While Joan never drove a car a day in her life, she wore out the wheels on strollers, since she “walked” her grandsons Scott and Steve all over town during their pre-school years. Up until just this past fall, she took daily walks with her walker to stay active and fit. She was also fond of playing bingo, cards and chatting with folks, even strangers, who found both she and her cute English accent most endearing. Joan will be so very, very missed. To know her was to love her.

Annie R. Moffett “Lois,” age 73, a longtime Joliet resident, passed away Monday, February 6, 2017 at Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital.

Born May 8, 1943 in Louin, MS, she was the daughter of Oscar and Ola Mae (Sims) Thompson, and moved to Joliet in 1962. Annie worked as a chemical utility operator for Stepan Company in Elwood, and was a faithful member of St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church.

A generous and charitable woman, she will be remembered for always helping others.

Annie loved to cook and especially enjoyed all the family gatherings. She was adored by her children, family, coworkers and friends.

Surviving are her loving and devoted children, Stanley Moffett and Jerry Moffett, both of Channahon, and Shirley Ann (James) Draper and Kenneth Moffett, both of Joliet;

eleven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; three sisters, Juanita Brewer, Carrie Perry and Diane Evans; two brothers, Oliver Thompson and Larry Thompson; many nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.

She was preceded by her husband, Quitman Moffett in 1990; her parents; two brothers, Adolph Thompson and Ernest Thompson; and one sister, Ruthie Mae Moffett.

Funeral services for Annie R. Moffett will be held Friday, February 10, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church, 1404 S. Briggs Street, Joliet, where visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Burial will take place Saturday, at 10:00 a.m. at Elmhurst Cemetery.

SHIRLEY R. MONDAY Shirley R. Monday, passed away peacefully with her loving family by her side, Saturday February 4, 2017. Age 91.

Shirley graduated from Joliet Township High School in 1943. She was a Charter Member of her church and was the church secretary for many years. Shirley loved crafts especially ceramics and knitting; she was a lifelong Cubs fan and was thrilled to see her beloved Cubs win the World Series.

She loved her family and she will be deeply missed.

He was born January 31, 1941 to the late Lorraine (nee Linske) and Robert Spreitzer in Joliet, IL. where he had resided most of his life. He was a U.S. Army Veteran and member of the VFW and the American Legion Post #1188.

Born: September 28, 1923; in Neoga, IL Died: February 6, 2017; in Romeoville, IL Joseph D. Worland, age 93, late of Romeoville, passed away peacefully, Monday, February 6, 2017 at Senior Star of Romeoville.

He was born September 28, 1923 in Neoga, IL, to Thomas S. and Florence (Hunk) Worland, and was raised in Joliet. In his youth he was a Golden Glove boxer.

He joined the United States Navy and served three years during World War II, with time aboard the USS Core. Joe worked as a maintenance welder for 38 years with Material Service and later Fisher Body.

Following the Navy he took up archery and was a nationally ranked archer. His true athletic passion, however, was tennis, which he began playing at the age of 42. He also taught tennis at Joliet Tennis Club, Lockport Racquet Team, and coached tennis at Lewis University for one year. He was also an avid square dancer and pingpong player.

He married the love of his life, Helen Louise (Kachelhoffer) Worland, and together they raised their family in Romeoville and Plainfield.

Helen preceded him in death in 1987. Joe retired to Arizona where he lived until returning to Romeoville six years ago.

Joe was the proud father of seven children who survive, Karen (Vincent) Masterson of Shorewood, Jean (Timothy) Sullivan of Lockport, Kevin (Peggy) Worland of Joliet, Brad (Dawn) Worland of Nashville, TN, Patrick (Laurie) Worland of Hammond, IN, Russell (Phyllis) Worland of Joliet, and Thomas Worland of Joliet. Also surviving are 16 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one brother, Louis (Doris) Worland of Port Orchard, WA; one sister, Angela (Edward) O’Connor of Wilmington; and many nieces and nephews.

Pence casts tie-breaking vote to confirm DeVos

WASHINGTON – Charter school advocate Betsy DeVos won confirmation as education secretary Tuesday by the slimmest of margins, pushed to approval only by the historic tie-breaking vote of Vice President Mike Pence.

Two Republicans, Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, joined Democrats in a marathon effort to derail the nomination of the wealthy Republican donor. The Senate historian said Pence’s vote was the first by a vice president to break a 50-50 tie on a Cabinet nomination.

Despite the win, DeVos emerged bruised from the highly divisive nomination fight. Opposed by half the Senate, she faced criticism, even ridicule for lack of experience and confusion during her confirmation hearing. At one point, she said some schools should have guns because of the threat of grizzly bears.

And there has been scathing opposition from teachers unions and civil rights activists over her support of charter schools and her conservative religious ideology.

President Donald Trump accused Democrats of seeking to torpedo education progress. In a tweet before the vote, he wrote, “Betsy DeVos is a reformer, and she is going to be a great Education Sec. for our kids!”

DeVos was sworn in hours after the Senate vote by Pence, who told the new Cabinet member: “I wasn’t just voting for you. Having seen your devotion to improving the quality of education for some of our most vulnerable children across the nation for so many years, I was also casting a vote for America’s children.”

“I can tell you, my vote for Betsy DeVos was the easiest vote I ever cast,” Pence said.

DeVos released a statement promising to be “a tireless advocate for all students.”

“Partnering with students, parents, educa-

tors, state and local leaders, Congress and all stakeholders, we will improve education options and outcomes across America,” she said.

She now takes the helm of a department charged with implementing laws affecting the nation’s public schools with no direct experience with traditional public schools. Her opponents noted that she has no experience running public schools, nor has she attended one or sent her children to one.

She also will have to address several hot-button issues in higher education, such as rising tuition costs, growing student debt and the troubled for-profit colleges, many of which have closed down, leaving students with huge loans and without a good education or job prospects.

Close attention also will be paid to how DeVos deals with sexual assault and freedom of speech on campuses.

Ahead of Tuesday’s vote, emotions ran high as constituents jammed senators’ phone lines.

Protesters gathered outside the Capitol, including one person in a grizzly bear costume to ridicule DeVos. Democrats and labor unions vigorously fought the nomination, suggesting that DeVos would defund traditional public schools by diverting taxpayers’ money to charter and private institutions. They cited her financial interest in organizations pushing for charter schools, although she has said she will divest those interests.

Collins and Murkowski said they feared her focus on charter schools will undermine remote public schools in their states.

“President Trump’s swamp got a new billionaire today,” the Democratic National Committee said in a statement. “Millions of teachers, parents and students could not have made their opposition to Betsy DeVos’ confirmation any clearer – they do not want someone whose only education experience is dismantling public schools.”

‘Unprecedented failure’ VIEWS Rich Miller

The latest Illinois credit rating downgrade from Fitch Ratings is chock full of phrases that could be used in the next campaign cycle against the governor and other incumbents.

The one that’s made the most headlines is “Unprecedented failure,” as in Fitch’s downgrade “reflects the unprecedented failure of the state to enact a full budget for two consecutive years and the financial implications of spending far in excess of available revenues, which has resulted in increased accumulated liabilities and reduced financial flexibility.”

But that’s just stating the obvious.

Pretty much anybody paying half attention out there knows the people who run the government are participating in an “unprecedented failure.” This has never happened before in Illinois, or in any other state for that matter.

However, here’s another Fitch phrase: “Fundamentally weakened,” as in “Even if the current attempts at a resolution to the extended impasse prove successful, Fitch believes that the failure to act to date has fundamentally weakened the state’s financial profile.”

In other words, digging out from under this impasse is going to be a long, hard, painful slog. And the longer the impasse lasts, the more difficult that process will become.

As the state’s economic activity appears to slow, a third Fitch observation is worth noting here: “Illinois has failed to capitalize on the economic growth of recent years to bolster its financial position.”

While other states were piling up surpluses during the national economic recovery, Illinois was creating a mountain of debt mainly because Democrats allowed the 2011 tax hike to partially expire and the Republican governor wouldn’t negotiate a new revenue and spending deal until he got his precious economic reforms. So if the national economy does enter a recession in the coming months, Illinois will be in a truly horrible spot.

One more phrase from Fitch: “Very weak,” as in “Illinois’ operating performance, both during the great recession and in this subsequent period of economic growth, has been very weak.”

Starting in 2002, Illinois has elected three governors in a row who can’t seem to get their arms around the job. And, instead of helping them do their jobs, legislative

Democrats, particularly in the House, have preferred to fight and obstruct them. Even the income tax hike turned out to be a failure because it was temporary, expiring midway through a fiscal year while a Democratic governor was heading out the door.

“Very weak,” indeed.

And speaking of weak, Gov. Bruce Rauner indicated to the Chicago Tribune last week that he plans to propose a budget much like the one he unveiled last year. In other words, yet another punt.

Last year, the governor punted on $3.5 billion in cuts needed to put his proposal into balance. Instead of outlining the actual cuts, and therefore wearing the political jacket for suggesting those cuts, he simply said he was willing to work with the General Assembly on finding where to cut or the GA could give him the authority to make the cuts on his own – without first explaining where he would cut.

If cuts became necessary, the governor told his legislative audience last year, “I would ask the legislature to work with us to make these tough decisions. If you are not willing to do that, then give the Executive Branch the flexibility to reallocate resources and make reductions to state spending as necessary.”

And this is what Gov. Rauner told the Tribune last week: “Either the General Assembly authorizes me to make cuts, not my first choice but I’ll do that, or let’s work together to do a balanced budget with cuts and, what I prefer is, a balance of cuts, some revenues and major structural change.”

State law forbids governors from using revenue streams that aren’t currently in place to balance their budget proposals.

Rod Blagojevich did that time and time again, coming up with tax or fee plans that magically balanced his proposal. But every reform has its downside, and the downside to this one is that instead of using phony revenues to balance a budget plan, Gov. Rauner has used phony cuts.

The root of “leadership” is “lead,” and that, by definition, means going first. Our state Constitution, however flawed, built that leadership into its two main budgetary mandates. First, the governor proposes a balanced budget, then the General Assembly passes a balanced spending plan.

Neither have worked out too well of late, or for quite a while. But the state constitutional convention delegates obviously wanted governors to lead.

Instead, we get six downgrades in the last two years.

To the Editor: From a recent letter in The Herald-News: “This slander of men and women who have dedicated their lives to understanding how the world works is a falsehood, just like the myth that scientists ‘in the ’60s’ warned of an imminent ice age. No such claim was ever made.”

In the 1960s?

Maybe not, but to say that “No such claim was ever made” can be construed to mean at any time in history, and that is not true.

Such claims sure came out in the 1970s, beginning as close to the 1960s as you can get – January.

The first one I know of was about air pollution getting so bad that it would reduce the amount of sunlight reaching the earth’s surface by onehalf. What effect do you suppose that would have on our temperatures?

Hint: It wouldn’t be global warming.

Throughout the ’70s, we had article after article published in publications such as Time (“Another Ice Age,” June 24, 1974), Newsweek, Life and National Geographic, et. al.

On Earth Day, 1970, Prof. Kenneth Watt (professor emeritus of ecology studies, UC Davis) said, “If present trends continue, the world will be …

11 degrees colder by the year 2000.

This is about twice what it would take to put us in an ice age.” Those “present conditions” did continue, but the ice age?

Still waiting, in spite of some very cold winters in both the ’70s and ’80s.

So Prof. Watt missed saying that in the ’60s by about five months.

That was pretty darned close, and he was just one of many making such similar predictions all through the 1970s and beyond. How many of them have come true vs. the number that have not?

Most importantly, what have we learned from those failed predictions by these “... men and women who have dedicated their lives to understanding how the world works?”

I’m missing something

To the Editor: The First Amendment states in part: Congress shall not prohibit or abridge the right of the people to peaceably assemble.

I was watching the news and the people that were protesting Donald Trump’s presidency.

Traffic had to be diverted because the streets were blocked. How does blocking of streets fall under the right of the people to peaceably assemble?

I’m missing something here, or is it OK, when those protesters trample the rights of others because they want to express their rights.

Minooka tops Joliet West for 12th-straight victory

cherron@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – Two girls basketball teams who are both headed to the same regional next week wrapped up Southwest Prairie Conference play with encouraging effort on Tuesday.

Minooka won its 12th straight to wrap up a 23-3 regular season and a 13-1 mark in the SPC, while Joliet West put up a good fight before the Indians claimed a 66-50 win on a night where they honored seniors Brooklyn Bachmann, Hailey Arlis, Ellie Rivara and Abby Holloway.

The Tigers (14-11, 6-8) conclude their regular season with Metea Valley on Thursday before both they and the Indians (23-3, 13-1) compete in next week’s Class 4A Oswego Regional.

Minooka is the third seed in the East Aurora Sectional, while West is the 11th seed.

“It’s been a great season and the girls have done everything that we’ve asked,” Indians coach Ray Liberatore said. “Tonight we saw a little different wrinkle with coach (John) Placher running a triangle-and-two, which we struggled a little bit with, but then other girls stepped up and eventually they had to get out of it and then Brooklyn did her stuff.

“It’s great to have some adversity and see how you respond to it. Brooklyn didn’t panic and everyone else did a nice job, especially with it being senior night. I think that you’re going to have to beat a good team to win a regional in our sectional. What I love about this team is that they enjoy practicing and yesterday we had an awesome practice and that’s a credit to our four seniors since they make it

West closed to within 14-13 late in the first quarter after a layup by Jazzpher Evans (12 points) but Minooka closed out that period with a jumper and two free throws from Savannah Johnson (eight points, seven

rebounds) and also a jumper from Brooklyn Bachmann (24 points) to claim a 20-13 lead heading into the second quarter.

Sarah Gersch (14 points) pulled the Tigers to within 20-15 early in the second, but then the Indians got hot just before the midpoint of that quarter

and went on a 13-0 spurt to grab a 33-15 advantage. Cierra Bachmann scored seven of her 12 points during that decisive run. Minooka stretched its lead to 39-19 at halftime when Arlis (10 points) hit a trey at the buzzer.

“The coaches always stress when we’re struggling, attack the basket,” Surin said.

Gura said he probably will leave Surin at the point, at least for the time being.

“That’s something I’ve done on and off for years,” Surin said. “You get a different perspective with the different plays from that position. But it all looks good when we come out shooting on all cylinders like we did tonight.”

Spencer finished with 11 points.

Tyrell, Ragen and Wills had nine and Finch eight.

“I think the last couple of games [a victory over Nazareth preceding the Marquette win], we’re getting back on the right path,” Surin said.

“I’m feeling a lot better, too. Trainer Saul [Ramirez] has been doing a great job for me. I’m very close to 100 percent. Sometimes I still tweak it, but that’s going to happen in basketball.”

Before winning their last two, the Hilltoppers had lost to Bishop Mc-

Namara, Saint Viator and Marist in succession. Surin missed the first of those games and was limited the next two.

“McNamara has 17 wins, Viator is first in our conference [East Suburban Catholic] and Marist is 20-3,” Gura noted. “So we played some very good teams, and we have more coming. We go to St. Pat’s on Friday night, and we still have Benet left.

“This was a good one for us to play. Marquette made us work for everything we got, which I knew they would.”

Gura noted the Hilltoppers have double-digit victories on every level in the program for a third straight year, and there is another positive looming as JCA will host a regional [in Class 3A] for the first time in a long time.

“I understand it’s longer ago than any of us were born that JCA last hosted a regional,” Surin said. “We’ve been counting down the days. We can’t wait to see what the environment will be like in here in a regional.”

“It’s good to end the season on a high note since it will get our energy rolling into these next few games,” Arlis said. “From here on out, it’s only going to get tougher and we’re not going to have any more games where we can take it easy or play bad. We wanted to end on a positive note and get our spirits high going into the regional games.

“We started out a little rusty but as soon as a couple of girls started knocking down shots, it just destroyed their defense. Thank goodness we have a deep bench and we have girls that can step up, make shots and create plays, and that really helped us out tonight. We’ve gotten so much better and pushed the pace during practices and everyone is stepping up and working hard. We’ve just really bonded as a team, and you can see that on the court.”

The Tigers fell behind by as much as 56-27 late in the third quarter following a jumper from Brooklyn Bachmann and the Tigers were still down 58-33 with eight minutes remaining.

But West continued to fight, outscoring the hosts 17-8 in the final quarter. The Tigers also got eight points and 16 rebounds from Raven Reed and seven points from Alyssa Betlejeski.

But when they got another shooter in there, we went to a triangle-and-two, and that all worked for about 12 min-

utes but then they started hitting their shots.

“I have no complaints with the way that we played tonight. We had a lot of energy and saw a lot of good things

from our younger girls. When I looked at the score with about a minute to go and we’re down only 16, I thought that was pretty good. Everybody played hard and we did a nice job tonight.”

JOLIET – Jack Surin matters.

When the Joliet Catholic Academy senior guard was shelved recently with a sprained left ankle, the Hilltoppers were not the same team.

Playing in his third game since recovering and reaching what he said was something close to 100 percent, Surin scored 11 of his 18 points in the second half Tuesday night as JCA beat nonconference foe Ottawa Marquette, 65-44, to get back to the .500 mark at 11-11.

In addition, Surin played the point so well in the first half on Senior Night that coach Joe Gura left him there most of the way. Junior Aidan Tyrell, the other primary option at the point, came off the bench and hit three straight 3-pointers from the wing as the Hilltoppers blew out to a 42-25 halftime lead.

“You see what I’m talking about with Jack [Surin],” Gura said. “[Pete]

Ragen and [Donavan] Finch are great players. They really battle on the boards, usually against bigger people.

But when we have all three of those guys clicking together, we’re a pretty good team.”

JCA hit 16 of 28 shots in the first half, 57.1 percent, and that included 7 of 14 from 3-point range. In addition to Tyrell’s 3 for 3, Brendon Wills, Dexter Spencer, Surin and Finch all connected from beyond the arc.

The Hilltoppers also created offense early on with their half-court trap as Marquette (13-9) committed 12 of its 20 turnovers in the first half.

“I scouted Marquette against Seneca, and what I saw was you better get on those guys because if you let them run their stuff, they can hurt you,” Gura said. “So we wanted to not let them get comfortable.”

Spencer and Tyrell finished the first half with nine points apiece. Wills and Surin added seven and Finch and Ragen five. In the second half, however, the Hilltoppers sputtered offensive-

‘Jo Jo’ becomes national Silver Gloves champ

dgoss@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joseph Awinongya, a former professional boxer, had the opportunity during his career to make acquaintances with Angelo Dundee.

The former trainer and cornerman for Muhammad Ali imparted sage advice, advice that might have helped Awinongya’s 9-year-old son become a national Silver Gloves champion.

Young Joseph Awinongya, nicknamed Jo Jo, won all three of his bouts last week to claim the 8-9-year-old, 80-pound division title at the Silver Gloves Nationals in Independence, Missouri, outside Kansas City.

“I took [Jo Jo] to a fight in Harvey when he was younger,” the elder Joseph said Monday as he was about to put his son through a training session at Chicago Sports & Fitness Center in Joliet. “I just sat back and let him do it. I wanted him to learn to think about stuff. I wanted him to do it by himself.

“I went through it before in my career, where you have someone telling you to do this or do that throughout the fight. I learned from Angelo Dundee that it’s better to use your own mind in the ring. Even when [Jo Jo] is sparring, I just watch him.

“Most athletic minds are very slow. Athletes have to learn to think fast, react quickly. You start thinking too much and you will be in trouble.”

Jo Jo was not in trouble in any of his bouts at the Silver Gloves. All three went the distance, which for his division is three one-minute rounds.

He beat a boxer from California in his second fight – his father said California, along with Texas, usually produces the best boxers – and then an opponent from the state of Washington to win the belt.

Asked what he felt his toughest fight was, Jo Jo said, “I think the last one.

That kid threw more punches. That made me want to hit him more.

“I got an 8-count in the

second fight. I’m happy with how I did in the whole tournament.”

“He made our area and the state of Illinois proud,” Joseph said. “Everyone from Illinois at the tournament lost except for him.”

Congratulations flowed at the Chicago Sports & Fitness Center as one patron after another came by to offer Jo Jo a handshake or high-five and admire his belt. Joseph said Hawk Chevrolet Cadillac of Joliet confirmed this week that it is on board as a corporate sponsor for Jo Jo. A fourth-grader at Farragut Elementary School, Jo Jo will turn 10 in May. He had one fight each day at the nationals, so there was some free time.

“When I wasn’t fighting, I just watched TV, and I was moving around and seeing things,” he said. “This was my first time at the Silver Gloves Nationals, and it probably is the best tournament for me so far. The way it went, it does help me want to keep boxing.”

His long-range goal is the 2024 Olympics.

“Making the Olympics in 2024 is the goal,” his father confirmed. “That’s when he first will be eligible. He doesn’t go into the Golden Gloves until he is 17. I think he is going to win the Silver Gloves every year from now on.

“The Junior Olympics will be in Virginia in June or July. He is going there for sure, and he is going to win every tournament he goes to.

I say that because boxing is fun for him. He likes the challenge.”

He always enjoys any sort of challenge.

“He can come in here and run two hours straight if he wants to,” Joseph said. “He is that dedicated. He likes challenges, too. The kids here will be jumping rope, and he will want to make it a competition.”

Awinongya emphasized he not only wants his son to enjoy his time in the ring, and in training to step into the ring, but the same goes for other kids in Joliet.

give kids in Joliet encouragement. Our city needs to step up and do that.

“[Jo Jo] knows what’s good and what’s bad. Other kids need to know that, too.”

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Bonzie Colson had 27 points and 16 rebounds Tuesday for Notre Dame, which snapped a four-game losing streak with an 88-81 win over Wake Forest.

Colson grabbed 11 of his rebounds in the second half and recorded his 15th double-double of the season. He also set a career high with five blocked shots and knocked down two 3-pointers.

V.J. Beachem added 19 points and a career-high four blocks and Steve Vasturia had 17 points and seven boards for Notre Dame (18-7, 7-5 ACC), which had lost five out of its last six and fell out of the Top 25 this week, but came back from a nine-point second-half deficit.

John Collins had 24 points and 14 rebounds to lead Wake Forest (14-10, 5-7). Bryan Crawford added 19 points and Keyshawn Woods had 16.

Collins recorded his seventh straight 20-point game for the Demon Deacons, the longest such streak in the ACC since North Carolina State’s T.J. Warren had 15 in a row in the 2013-14 season.

Crawford drilled a step-back 3-pointer with one second left to end the first half and give Wake Forest a five-point lead.

EVANSTON – Malcolm Hill scored 14 points and Illinois beat Northwestern, 68-61, on Tuesday night.

Te’Jon Lucas, Maverick Morgan and Michael Finke each had 11 points, while Hill added nine rebounds for Illinois (1411, 4-8 Big Ten).

Bryant McIntosh led Northwestern (18-6, 7-4) with 21 points, but he committed an uncharacteristic six turnovers compared with four assists. Vic Law had 16 points and nine rebounds.

Tied at 28 at halftime, no team enjoyed more than a six-point lead in the back-and-forth second half until the game’s final moments. Lucas scored a layup with 1:37 remaining to put Illinois ahead 63-61, and Michael Finke added to the lead with a jumper at 1:09.

After Law’s 3-pointer at 3:31, Northwestern missed its next three field goals and committed four turnovers.

Patriots take victory lap through Boston

BOSTON – Snow, rain and chilly temperatures didn’t dampen the joy of New England Patriots fans exulting in their team’s latest championship Tuesday.

The five-time Super Bowl winners received a hero’s welcome as they paraded through downtown Boston aboard World War II-era duck boats that have become a staple of the city’s recent title celebrations.

Sounds of “Brady! Brady!” “TB12!” and “MVP” rang out throughout the procession as fans proudly wore No. 12 jerseys over thick parkas and sweaters, holding signs declaring star quarterback Tom Brady the G.O.A.T. – the

greatest of all time.

Brady grinned and just took it all in, at one point tossing footballs back and forth with fans on the route as the duck boats rumbled along.

“We’re going to remember this one for the rest of our lives and we know you will too,” he shouted from a stage at the parade’s end at City Hall. “I told you we were going to bring this sucker home and we brought it home!”

Cannons shot out red, white and blue confetti along the route, which started near the Boston Marathon finish line, where three spectators were killed and 260 others wounded in bombing attacks in April 2013. The route wound past famous city landmarks such as historic Faneuil Hall and the Boston Common.

Q: Is there a connection between hearing loss and heart disease?

A: The inner ear is extremely sensitive to blood flow. Studies have shown that a healthy cardiovascular system-a person’s heart, arteries and veinshas a positive effect on hearing. Conversely, inadequate blood flow and trauma to the blood vessels of the inner ear can contribute to hearing loss. According to the Better Hearing Institute, one study indicated that the prevalence of hearing loss is greater among those who have a history of heart disease than in the general population. Another study suggested that low frequency hearing loss may be potential indicator of heart disease. February is Heart Month and may be a good time to also have your hearing checked by an audiologist.

How would you treat an ankle sprain?

Foot and ankle injuries happen to all of us from time to time. Although it is sometimes hard to tell how serious an injury is at first, here is an easy guide to use until you can reach a doctor.

R.I.C.E. stands for rest, ice, compression and elevation. First, the body must be allowed to recuperate, and that calls for rest. Second, forget the heating pad, at least at first. Ice applied immediately after an injury and for several days following constricts blood vessels, reducing swelling and pain. Third, compression with a bandage also reduces swelling, as well as immobilizing the area. Finally, elevating the foot above the heart prevents blood from pooling around the injury. R.I.C.E. is first aid only, not a replacement.

Plainfield’s Katie O’Connor’s has wide array of Irish fare MYSTERY DINER PLAINFIELD – You never quite know you can’t pronounce Smithwick’s until you go to an Irish restaurant/bar, like Plainfield’s Katie O’Connor’s, and the bartender says it.

Because it isn’t Smith-wick’s. It’s more like Smittick’s.

Even after hearing it several times, I couldn’t order it right.

Luckily, wings weren’t as difficult.

Katie O’Connor’s is a hockey bar, with plenty of other sports gear. Because how can you go wrong putting up Cubs paraphernalia now?

But it also has some pretty good food.

There is plenty of the standard stuff, from sliders to mozzarella sticks to burgers and Reubens.

But I went further off course, ordering the bourbon beef kabobs to follow up the chipotle garlic wings.

The wings were good, not doused with sauce, but enough to make your hands messy. I vowed to used just one hand in this meal and I held true to it.

The bartender saw I was a mess quickly and helped out with an extra stack of napkins as I sipped on a Lagunitas Sumpin Sumpin Ale, an IPA. When the main course arrived (actually soon after), I tried to order the Smithwick’s.

I had Googled it on my phone and it sounded good, but it didn’t help me pronounce it right.

The bartender corrected me and we both moved on.

When the kabobs arrived, it wasn’t what I expected.

I honestly expected food on sticks.

But I’m not always the brightest.

Instead, there was a bed of rice with onions, green peppers, tomatoes and mushrooms with tender beef kabobs marinated in a bourbon sauce with more on top and along the side of the plate.

It was a meal, for sure, and I clearly couldn’t finish it after diving into the pound of wings. But I was fine taking some home for the next day.

The beef was excellent and I ate it as I watched the waitress walk past with a sizzling plate of fajitas that looked quite good, too. Maybe I’ll come back and order those another time.

One difficulty I had when planning out the meal, because I like to do that ahead of time, was the website doesn’t seem to be working anymore. I called to make sure they were still open, which they confirmed quickly that they were.

The burger options, from the Blarney Burger to O’Paddy Melt, look like what you would expect. And they have three boxty options – Philly, pub club and Reuben – under the list of wraps.

Yes, I had to Google boxty too, but apparently it’s an Irish potato pancake, which can come with filling.

Learn something new every day, I guess. This is a place I’ll want to stop by again.

ASK THE DOCTORS Robert Ashley A 2012 British Medical Journal study analyzed a combination of 14 older studies assessing the benefits of health checkups.

The study did not find any difference in death rates between those who had physicals and those who didn’t. However, in one case, what the authors defined as the group receiving health checkups amounted to one physical over a 22-year period. In fact, participants in eight of the 14 studies evaluated had only one physical exam done for the time frame of their studies.

Obviously, the question needs to be studied further – and electronic medical records give us the ability to do this. The critics of routine health checkups say they lead to unnecessary testing, possibly harmful tests and cost about $10 billion per year.

Yet I find that the most important aspect of the health checkup is the time to sit with patients -- to talk to them about their level of exercise, their diet, their drug habits and their level of sleep; to review whether they’re having shortness of breath, chest pains, or problems with urination or bowel movements – and many times to learn about the stressors in their lives. This time is an important aspect to the doctor-patient relationship and is difficult to quantify.

So, if you are healthy, 45 years old and not on any medications, I would recommend that you get a health checkup every two years. But, of course, put your trust in your own primary care doctor’s opinion regarding this matter.

Dear Doctor: I’m a 45-year-old man without any major medical problems. Is it worth it for me to get yearly physicals with my primary care doctor?

Dear Reader: I have generally encouraged annual physical exams for most of my patients in their 40s and beyond. I schedule more time for this type of examination so that I can collect a history of a patient’s lifestyle, conduct a review of their symptoms, and determine whether they have had the recommended colonoscopies, mammograms and vaccinations. With both the history and the physical examination, I learn aspects of the patient’s health that were often not known to me prior. From my subjective vantage point as a primary care doctor, I find value in these visits. But objectively, the benefit of physical exams is less clear.

Take a 1986 study comparing death rates of more than 5,000 men between the ages of 35 and 54 who’d had six health checkups to more than 5,000 men who’d had one checkup.

Over a 16-year period, researchers found a decrease in death rates from colon cancer and hypertension among those men who had more checkups, but they found no decrease in death rates from other causes.

A 2007 article in the Annals of Internal Medicine reviewed 33 studies assessing the efficacy of health checkups. Researchers tried to determine if physicals caused benefit, caused harm, or had no impact on a patient’s health.

The largest benefit seen from physicals was through an increase in colon cancer screening. A more intermediate benefit was seen through the administration of Pap smears and cholesterol checks. The physicals also showed a benefit in decreasing worry among patients.

However, overall, the results showed no benefit seen in regard to death rates. The biggest problem with this assessment is that the different studies included so many variables, reaching conclusions proved difficult.

Yes, but this deal has two interesting alternatives with which to occupy the mind.

When I described the play in four spades yesterday, South took the first trick with dummy’s heart ace, cashed his spade, diamond and club winners, then endplayed West by leading his heart jack. Fine, but what might have happened if declarer, instead of giving West the lead in hearts at trick seven, had exited with a trump? Also, what could have transpired if South had not won the first trick?

North might have cue-bid four hearts over three spades to show a strong raise to four spades (and promise nothing about hearts).

If South throws West in with his trump or ducks the first trick, the contract can be defeated.

In the first case, after winning with his spade queen, West must resist the temptation to cash the heart queen. Instead, he must lead a low heart to declarer’s jack. Then South will have to lose one diamond and two clubs to East, along with the spade already conceded.

That defense should not be too hard to find, but the other one really takes some imagination. After the heart king and a heart to the ace, when declarer cashes his two top trumps, West must throw the 10 and queen under them! Then he cannot be endplayed, and the contract will go down one. After the deal, probably South would congratulate West on his great play, then say that if only West had had the spade four and dummy the spade three, the contract would still have made.
