Disabilities advocate calls on Joliet to enforce $500 parking fine

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – An advocate for people with disabilities criticized the city for not enforcing a stiffer fine for handicapped parking violations more than two years after enacting it.

In the ensuing discussion at the Monday City Council workshop meeting, it became apparent that the city plans to fix a porous collections system that for years has let people get away with not paying fines for parking and other violations of city ordinances.

But the city can’t even impose the $500 fine for parking in handicapped parking spots, which was enacted in October 2014, because only a fraction of those spots are marked with the fine, said John Sheridan, who serves on two handicapped access committees.

Most signs throughout the city still warns violators of the old $250 fine.

“Less than 10 percent of the signs in Joliet have the fine of $500,” Sheridan told the council. “Do any of the council members

see anything wrong with this?”

City Manager Jim Hock questioned Sheridan’s 10 percent calculation but did not have a number of his own to offer. Hock said he would make a report on the matter to the council at its regular meeting on Tuesday.

“The city has gone out and changed a number of signs,” Hock said.

Sheridan, who is a member of the Mayor’s Committee for Citizens with Disabilities and the Accessible Will County Committee, insisted that the city set a timetable for posting the $500 fine throughout Joliet.

“We’re getting nowhere. All we get are empty promises,” he said.

When Sheridan said the city only collects fines on about half the handicap parking tickets handed out, Mayor Bob O’Dekirk acknowledged the city is not collecting on a number of fines.

He also said the city is preparing to seek an outside company to deal with the issue.

That proposal may be presented to the council for a vote on Feb. 21.

After the meeting, O’Dekirk described the collections problem as “all across the

board.”

“The city fines have not been collected.

The city is not following up on them,” he said.

O’Dekirk said he does not know whether Joliet ever had a system for making sure traffic, parking and ordinance fines were collected.

“Other cities have a mechanism for doing that,” he said. “We’re going to bring that to Joliet.”

Crabigale’s

In another matter, City Manager Jim Hock reported to the council that the latest plan to put the old Crabigale’s comedy club back to use has fallen through.

Hock said Leaf Capital Investments, whose owner also is involved in The Vault Cafe and Bar in Lemont, has not provided the required loan documents to the city.

Joliet owns the downtown building, which has not been used since Crabigale’s closed in 2005.

Joliet plans to issue another request for proposals to redevelop the building at 1. E. Cass St.

Ruane appointed to fill Plainfield Village Board vacancy

mmallory@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – The Plainfield Village Board has a new trustee.

Tom Ruane was appointed by Village President Mike Collins on Monday night to fill a vacancy on the board. Ruane was unanimously approved by other trustees with a 5-0 vote. His term will expire in April.

Ruane has been a resident of Plainfield for about 19 years and works in construction. He has never run for public office, but has been active in the community for many years as a member of the Plainfield Riverfront Foundation Board of Directors and as an organizer for Plainfield Fest.

“I’ve always been about the community,” Ruane said. “I don’t own a business, but my big thing is I always want to leave the place better than when I found it.”

lins chose to appoint him. He also said he knows most trustees and village staff.

“I’m a middle of the road guy, I can go one way or another, but I’ll voice my opinion,” he said.

Ruane has a degree in architecture and has worked with developers since he finished college. He applied for the Plainfield Plan Commission a few times but was never appointed.

Trustees welcomed him to the board.

“Welcome aboard, glad to have you join us,” Trustee Margie Bonuchi said to Ruane.

Ruane also has volunteered his time toward the annual Plainfield Hometown Irish Parade held each March. The event was approved by the village board Monday night and is set for Sunday, March 12.

COUNTDOWN TO VALENTINE’S Customers hunt for the perfect gift at flower, jewelry shops

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Valentine’s Day is around the corner and Palmer Florist is keeping count for customers outside its doors.

The sign outside the Joliet flower shop Monday said customers had eight days left to shop. Owner Paul Palmer advises customers to plan ahead and order early.

“The earlier you get it, the better

service it is,” he said.

While not on par with the earlier winter holiday shopping season, consumers are expected to spend more this year for Valentine’s Day compared with last year, according to the National Retail Federation.

Analysts with the retail trade association predict consumers will spend an average of $146.84 on flowers, jewelry, candy and apparel, up from $142.31 last year.

Stores such as Palmer Florist and

Newstar Jewelers, which have a long history in the Joliet area, may see a boost in traffic and spending as customers try to find the perfect gift for their loved one.

Palmer said his shop does more business the day before and on Valentine’s Day than some months throughout the year. Most of what the store sells for the holiday is roses – red, white and pink – along with chocolates.

“It cranks,” he said of the uptick in customers.

Business at Newstar Jewelers in Joliet has picked up, said Theresa Murphy, owner of the jewelry store.

She said Valentine’s Day is a big time for people planning to get engaged, as the store sells a lot of engagement rings.

“Sometimes it’s a lot of last-minute customers, but we usually find something in their price range,” Murphy said.

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A longtime staff member of the George Werden Buck Boys & Girls Club received a special surprise Monday for his decades of service to Joliet youths.

Waiting for Frank Bati inside the club Monday were other staff and the Board of Directors, ready to congratulate him for 50 years of dedicated service to an organization that serves youth with educational and recreational programs.

Also awaiting him was recognition from the Illinois Senate, thanks to state Sen. Pat McGuire, D-Joliet.

The celebration caught Bati by surprise.

“Thanks everybody. Can I stop blushing now?” he said, laughing, after shaking hands and hugging many who attended, including his wife, Jackie Bati.

Kahlil Diab, the club’s executive director, said Frank has been involved with everything at the club over the years, including maintenance, programming and the pool. Frank serves as the club’s youth coordinator, according to the organization’s website.

“He’s still here. He’s not going anywhere,” Diab said.

Frank’s time at the club stretches back to 1967, when it was just the Boys Club. He was one of the original members of the Boys Club before then. The club extended its membership to girls in 1976 in an effort to reach out to more youths.

“This is probably the best organization in Joliet as far as I’m concerned.

Jackie said Frank loves working with the kids at the club and he’s met a lot of people through it. She said he likes being at the Boys & Girls Club and is very devoted to it.

“I think it’s kept him young being around the kids. This is like his second home,” she said.

Frank said the club has been a part of his life. When many of the children who go the club grow up, they come back and talk about the good it’s done for them, he said.

“I’ve never got tired of being here,” he said.

While Frank was treated to cake for the occasion, he also was given recog-

nition from the state Senate. McGuire read him the recognition, which acknowledged his 50 years of dedication and service, commending him for his commitment to serve as a mentor to youths.

“Which makes him an outstanding role model for all the citizens of Illinois,” McGuire said.

Registration open for new Romeoville Community Garden

mmallory@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – A community garden is coming to Romeoville.

The Romeoville Parks & Recreation Department partnered with the Lockport Township Park District and reached a deal to open up space for residents and non-residents to grow healthy fruits and vegetables. The partnership is called The Cooperative Community Gardens Program.

The garden will be at Sunset Park, 729 Murphy Drive, in Romeoville. The garden itself will be maintained by Romeoville, while the park will be main-

tained by the Lockport Township Park District.

Residents of Romeoville and Lockport Township can reserve 10-by-10-foot plots through a registration process that began Monday. The cost is $20 for residents.

Non-resident registration will start next Monday and cost $40. A $25 cash deposit is required.

The growing season is from April 15 to Oct. 28 and each participant will have a key to access their plots. A communal water supply will be available and participants are responsible for providing their own container.

Joliet deputy fire chief Ray Randich retires

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Ray Randich grew up just off Theodore Street and it was fairly common for the Lockport Township fire trucks to pass by on their way to a blaze in Crest Hill.

“I’d hear Lockport coming down and I’d run up to the corner, see which way they turned, then make my dad drive Ray Randich me up so I could stand across the street and watch,” he recalled. “A firefighter ... It’s pretty amazing when you get to do something you wanted to all your life.”

Thirty-two years after joining the Joliet Fire Department, Randich retired Friday after eight years as deputy chief. Chief Joe Formhals said a recent search of the department’s roster history showed Randich served as second-in-command longer than anyone else.

hals said. “He came on before I and many other guys here did. He brings experience that has really grounded [us].

When something comes up, he’s seen it all before.”

Randich holds a fire science degree from Joliet Junior College and was one of the first Joliet firefighters to become a paramedic, which is now a requirement. He served as chief of operations and was the secretary and treasurer for the firefighters union. He and his wife, Donna Randich, have three children.

“Zak’s a Plainfield firefighter, Lauren is a teacher and Daniel is at Western looking toward law enforcement,” Ray Randich said. “I think I’m proudest that my kids chose careers where they help and serve people. That’s what I’ve gotten [the most] out of firefighting.”

NEW LENOX – New Lenox police concluded a drug investigation Friday by seizing nearly $30,000 worth of Ecstasy and cocaine.

Sgt. Louis Alessandrini said Matthew K. Louis, 29, was the subject of an “intensive investigation” by New Lenox police with assistance Matthew from the Department of K. Louis Homeland Security.

About 1:30 p.m. Louis met with police in a parking lot near Larkin Avenue and McDonough Street in Joliet, where he was taken into custody. Alessandrini said Louis had brought 1,000 Ecstasy pills and 3 ounces of cocaine to the bust. Ecstasy typically sells for $20 a pill, Alessandrini said.

Louis, of the 600 block of Woodland Park Avenue in Chicago, was arrested on two counts of delivery of drugs and two counts of drug possession and faces six to 30 years in prison if convicted.

He is being held in the Will County Jail on $300,000 bond

BOLINGBROOK – Two teens were arrested Saturday after a 17-year-old boy was shot during an argument.

Bolingbrook Lt. Anthony Columbus said that at 11:38 p.m. police were sent to the 500 block of Emerson Circle after a disturbance was reported and gunshots were heard. Officers found the boy suffering from a gunshot wound and had him taken to a hospital.

Reports indicate his injuries were not life-threatening.

Columbus said police found Tenacious Harris, 18, and a 17-year-old boy in the area and learned they were involved in the shooting, which was “a result of a verbal altercation.”

Harris, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, was arrested on a charge of unlawful use of a weapon and booked into the Will County Jail.

The 17-year-old boy, a Bolingbrook resident, was arrested on charges of aggravated battery with a firearm and unlawful use of a weapon and booked into the River Valley Juvenile Detention Center.

Shaw Media correspondent CHANNAHON – Grant Aleman sat on his knees in his chair, pushed up his long sleeves and submerged his hands in a white mixture of glue and shaving cream. The 2-year-old lifted his hands in the air and watched as the goop ran through his fingers and plopped back onto his paper.

With a smile on his face from ear to ear, he repeatedly said, “It’s sticky!”

Aleman, along with 15 other children with parents and grandparents in tow, experienced Nature Play Day at the Four Rivers Environmental Education Center, which is an extension of the Forest Preserve District of Will County.

Interpretive naturalist Kelli Parke

organized the family-friendly event with children ages 3 to 5 in mind. Because of the time of year, she chose a snow theme, which was fun even if none of the white stuff covered the ground.

Parke said she purposely wanted to design this day around children and their parent or grandparent.

“I want other families who like nature to meet and it gives the opportunity for the kids to interact with their parents and other children,” Parke said.

“These days are great ways to foster a connection to nature, which is part of the mission of the forest preserve.”

This play day in particular was the largest Parke has had since its inception and she hoped this was a good sign for

future events.

Upon arrival, the guests were greeted at the door and encouraged to color until the others arrived, then Parke asked the children to gather to read the book, which set the theme for the day. She read “The Snowy Day” by Jack Ezra, and then moved the guests to tables to mimic events the character Peter encountered on his snowy day.

Interpretive specialist Angela Rafac mixed the glue and shaving cream together and when all were ready plopped a large scoop of the “snow” onto construction paper. The room was split with some of the children digging right in and making a mess while others eased into the texture.

“Painting with the snow was my favorite, it felt soft and gooey,” said Angela Sorensen of Joliet.

After, Parke, Rafac and interpretive naturalist Erin Ecker split the room and offered games where the children had to carry a pingpong ball on a small spoon and place it into a snowman jar, build a paper snowman along a wall, or throw a ball and knock over snowman pins.

“I liked the bowling because you get to throw a ball and the pins fall down. I even got a strike,” said Shane Barta, 5, of Shorewood.

man” as each child transferred the ice to the other, but once in a while, the urge to slide the slippery ice along the tile floor was too great and the chunks slid around like hockey pucks.

The 90-minute play day ended with a brisk hike around the center grounds.

Parke stopped along the way to show points of interest, such as a woodpeck-

er feather, acorns, tree leaves and birds and barges along the rivers. Parke had one important message to the kids.

“If you pick something up in nature, you need to return it to nature. And, kids, it’s also the law that you cannot collect feathers,” Parke said.

Parke also pointed out that the barge traffic along the Des Plaines River keeps the water from freezing over, which allows birds to use the river year-round, which in return gives birders a great place to enjoy birds watching.

After the hike, friends said goodbye and parents talked to their children about their play day.

“We just enjoy this program because it was a mix of crafts, stories and nature. We like the outdoor hike; we just think it’s beautiful out here and we want to enjoy it,” said Esther Hodapp of Minooka.

Joliet slates special meeting on immigration

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The city of Joliet is holding a community meeting Feb. 15 to address concerns about the impact of President Donald Trump’s recent executive orders affecting immigrants and foreign travelers.

The meeting will be 7 p.m. at Mount Carmel Church, 205 E. Jackson St. In a news release, the city stated that Mayor Bob O’Dekirk is hosting the meeting “to address the concerns of many community members regarding immigration and other recent issues.”

Also at the meeting will be Joliet Police Chief Brian Benton, other police officers, and city council mem-

bers and city officials.

O’Dekirk said he decided to have a community meeting when he met last week with community leaders conveying questions that people had about what Joliet police would do regarding immigration law.

He said people have been asking about the police department’s obligations to enforce new presidential executive orders. The travel restrictions set by the Trump administration two weekends ago “heightened it,” he said.

“There’s a lot of questions and concerns,” O’Dekirk said. “I thought we should talk with people as a whole.”

O’Dekirk said the city’s police policies concerning immigration issues have not changed.

“The city police don’t enforce federal laws,” he said, comparing immigration issues to tax issues. “If you don’t pay your taxes, you’re going to deal with IRS, not the Joliet Police Department. It’s the same on immigration issues.”

The city also has given notice that the meeting will serve as a special city council meeting for public discussion of “concerns regarding immigration and other current issues.”

O’Dekirk said questions have focused on immigration, but city officials at the meeting will discuss other issues if they are brought up.

“Joliet residents can hear straight from Joliet officials,” he said.

Red Terror fish stolen from Bolingbrook pet shop

About 12:30 p.m. Jan. 28, a man entered Petland, 744 E. Boughton Road,

and had an employee package the cichlasoma festae, more commonly called Red Terror fish, for transport, Lt. Anthony Columbus said.

Red Terrors are freshwater fish found in Central and South America.

They are considered very aggressive but are sought by aquarium hobbyists

Columbus said the man took the two fish and “walked around the store for some time, then left without paying for them.” The fish are valued at $70 each.

The suspect was described as a white man, aged 40 to 45 years old, with a shaved head.

In a survey of 7,293 consumers in January, the NRF said that 50 percent of them plan to buy candy, while about 39 percent plan to treat their dates to a night out at a restaurant, tickets to a show or another experience.

About 19 percent of customers plan to treat their significant other or family member with jewelry and 47 percent intend to contribute to $1.1 billion spent on greeting cards.

The NRF also said that department stores will see the most traffic this Valentine’s Day, with 34 percent of customers shopping at them and 31 percent shopping at a discount store.

About 27 percent of customers plan to shop online, while 19 percent will visit a florist.

Palmer said the most elaborate package his store puts together is chocolates and roses. He recalled how a couple of years ago a customer spent $2,500 for the flower shop to decorate a loved one’s residence.

“He said, ‘Just fill the house with

roses,’ ” Palmer said.

Sadly, Palmer said, the relationship didn’t work out.

Among the men who shop at Palmer Florist, about 60 percent of them are last-minute customers, he said. Palmer said some of them will call and ask what day Valentine’s Day falls on.

“It’s not like Easter – it’s always on the 14th,” he said.

OBITUARIES Lawrence “Bosco” Bebej, age 66, of Lockport, passed away Saturday, February 4th, 2017 at Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox.

Larry is survived by his loving family, wife, Sue Bebej (Richie); children, Jennifer (Ray) Mazeika, Jeff (Christy) Bebej, Melissa (Ed) Kuzia; siblings, Thomas (Bernie) Bebej, Judi (Gary) Harold; Papa of Catherine Mazeika, Jacob Mazeika, Brett Bebej, Kyle Bebej and Kalyn Bebej. Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph & Eleanor Bebej Sr., (Daniels); siblings, Joe Bebej Jr. and Peggy Stanislaus.

Larry was a member of Ingalls Park AC in Joliet, and a member of the IBEW. He retired from Ameritech after 30 years of service and was also a mail courier for Will County.

Chicago aquarium euthanizes lungfish

CHICAGO – An Australian lungfish that entranced visitors to Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium for more than 80 years has been euthanized because of old age, the popular tourist attraction announced Monday.

Granddad, who was 4 feet long and weighed 25 pounds, had stopped eating and started showing signs of organ failure. He was euthanized Sunday. A necropsy – or animal autopsy – found conditions consistent with old age, aquarium officials said.

“For a fish who spent much of his time imitating a fallen log, he sparked curiosity, excitement and wonder among guests of all ages who would hear his story,” said Bridget C. Coughlin, Shedd Aquarium’s president and chief executive officer.

Shedd estimates Granddad was more than 90 years old. The aquarium acquired him from the Sydney Aquarium in Australia during a 1933 collecting expedition, and Granddad was one

of two lungfish that attracted visitors during that year’s A Century of Progress International Exposition in Chicago. Aquarium officials estimate more than 104 million people saw Granddad over eight decades.

Rob Vernon, a spokesman for the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, said the nonprofit group is unaware of any older fish kept by a zoo or aquarium that it accredits in the U.S. or eight other countries.

“Granddad lived a pretty relaxed life, enjoyed interactions with us, including gentle pats along his back, and loved to eat his leafy greens,” said Michelle Sattler, who was Granddad’s caretaker for more than 30 years.

Lungfish can live up to 100 years and are a protected species in Australia.

The species has existed for more than 380 million years and has not changed for 100 million years, according to the aquarium.

Appeals court weighs Trump’s ban on travel

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – The fierce battle over President Donald Trump’s travel and refugee ban edged up the judicial escalator Monday, headed for a possible final face-off at the Supreme Court. Travelers, temporarily unbound, tearfully reunited with loved ones at U.S. airports.

The Justice Department filed a new defense of Trump’s ban on travelers from seven predominantly Muslim nations as a federal appeals court weighs whether to restore the administration’s executive order. The lawyers said the travel ban was a “lawful exercise” of the president’s authority to protect national security and said a judge’s order that put the policy on hold should be overruled.

The filing with the San Francisco-based 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals was the latest salvo in a high-stakes legal fight surrounding Trump’s order, which was halted Friday by a federal judge in Washington state.

The judges are to hear arguments Tuesday.

The appeals court earlier refused to immediately reinstate the ban, and lawyers for Washington and Minnesota – two states challenging it – argued anew on Monday that any resumption would “unleash chaos again,” separating families and stranding university students.

The Justice Department responded that the president has clear authority to “suspend the entry of any class of aliens” to the U.S. in the name of national security. It said the travel ban, which temporarily suspends the country’s refugee program and immigration from seven countries with terrorism concerns, was intended “to permit an orderly review and revision of screening procedures to ensure that adequate standards are in place

The challengers of the ban, the Justice Department wrote, were asking “courts to take the extraordinary step of second-guessing a formal national security judgment made by the president himself pursuant to broad grants of statutory authority.”

Whatever the appeals court decides, either side could ask the Supreme Court to intervene.

It could prove difficult, however, to find the necessary five votes at the high court to undo a lower court order; the Supreme Court has been at less than full strength since Justice Antonin Scalia’s death a year ago. The last immigration case that reached the justices ended in a 4-4 tie.

The president’s executive order has faced legal uncertainty ever since Friday’s ruling by U.S. District Judge James Robart, which challenged both Trump’s authority and his ability to fulfill a campaign promise.

The State Department quickly said people from the seven countries – Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen – could travel to the U.S. if they had valid visas.

The Homeland Security Department said it was no longer

directing airlines to prevent affected visa holders from boarding U.S.-bound planes.

On Monday in Colorado, a graduate student who had traveled to Libya with her 1-year-old son to visit her sick mother and attend her father’s funeral was back in Fort Collins after having been stopped in Jordan on her return trip.

Two Yemeni brothers whose family has sued over the travel ban, and who’d been turned away in the chaotic opening days of the order, arrived at Dulles International Airport in Virginia, where they were greeted by their father.

Syrian immigrant Mathyo Asali said he thought his life was “ruined” when he landed at Philadelphia International Airport on Jan. 28 only to be denied entry to the U.S. Asali, who returned to Damascus, said he figured he’d be inducted into the Syrian military. He was back on U.S. soil Monday.

Protests complicate start of Trump presidency

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Scrappy as ever, Donald Trump on Monday dismissed polls showing low approval ratings as “fake news.” But whatever his opinion, active opposition to his go-it-alone presidency appears to be widening.

From corporate boardrooms to the halls of Congress, Trump is facing an unprecedented effort to disrupt even the most basic of his presidential functions.

It’s an evolving, largely grass-roots effort that aims to follow Trump and his potential supporters everywhere they go – and there are early signs that it’s having an effect.

The Trump name alone is enough to spark outrage. There are plans for a mass “mooning” of Trump Tower in Chicago. Boycotts are underway of companies that sell Ivanka Trump’s clothing line or advertise on NBC’s “Celebrity Apprentice,” where Trump has remained an executive producer.

Congressional offices are being flooded with emails, social media messages and calls jamming phone lines.

Hundreds of protesters are flocking to town halls and local congressional offices, some in strongly Republican districts, to voice their opposition to

The goal, say organizers of some of the efforts, is nothing short of complete resistance. It’s a strategy Democrats say they learned from the success of the tea party movement, which stymied President Barack Obama’s agenda through

protests, door-to-door political action campaigns and online activism.

“The lesson from the last eight years is, sadly, that implacable resistance works,” said Rep. Gerry Connolly, D-Va. “Because it’s all about your base, and I will simply point out that our base is bigger than theirs, and it’s riled up.”

Trump and some Republicans shrug it off as sore losers unwilling to accept the results of the election. The president’s core supporters, in states such as Iowa and Wisconsin, applaud him as a man of action, delivering on his campaign promises to move quickly and shake up Washington.

Although recent polls show his approval ratings in the 40s, a historic low for a new president, Trump rejects the surveys as false.

“Any negative polls are fake news, just like the CNN, ABC, NBC polls in the election. Sorry, people want border security and extreme vetting,” he tweeted on Monday. “I call my own shots, largely based on an accumulation of data, and everyone knows it.”

Trump’s base is likely to reward him for his actions, say former White House aides, who note that all presidents face opposition and public demonstrations.

“It’s only a problem if it lets it stop him from doing what he seeks to do,” said former George W. Bush spokesman Ari Fleischer, who recalled a travel stop in Portland, Oregon, when protesters threw rocks at the president’s motorcade. “When it comes to policy full speed ahead, the people screaming at you can’t be convinced to be for you in any case.”

The Associated Press ST. LOUIS – A victims’ support group that helped force the Roman Catholic Church to confront the problem of child-molesting priests is going through upheaval of its own, including the resignations of two top leaders and a potentially reputation-damaging lawsuit.

by Priests, or SNAP, in 1988, stepped down as president Friday, about a month after the resignation of longtime executive director David Clohessy.

The change in leadership was sandwiched around a Jan. 17 lawsuit accusing SNAP of exploiting the victims it purports to serve by taking kickbacks from lawyers.

Blaine and Clohessy said their resignations were planned months ago and were unrelated to the lawsuit.

They said they simply decided it was time to step aside after decades with the nonprofit group.

But the turnover and the lawsuit have created a tumultuous time for an organization that has been one of the

ris of St. Louis, said the organization remains as strong as ever and will persevere. Clohessy said SNAP’s strength isn’t in its leadership, but in the hundreds of volunteers “who so generously work to protect kids, expose predators and help survivors.”

The organization is not nearly as visible as it was during the height of the sexual abuse scandal more than a decade ago, in part because many of the victims from decades ago have come forward and been heard, and the church, under pressure from SNAP and others, is more aggressively policing itself.

Some experts, however, say SNAP continues to play a vital role.

“I think the need for an organization like SNAP is still very important because of the uneven way some bishops and religious orders respond to these accusations,” said Jason Berry, an author of three books on the church scandal.

Nicholas Cafardi, a professor at the Duquesne University School of Law and former chairman of the U.S. Bishops National Review Board for the Protection of Children and Youth, said SNAP still has a place “in making sure the topic never does get buried again.”

“They’ll be relevant as long as the problem is with us,” Cafardi said.

In the lawsuit, filed in Chicago, Gretchen Hammond said that she learned after starting work as SNAP’s director of development in 2011 that the organization “does not focus on protecting or helping survivors – it exploits them.” The lawsuit alleges that SNAP “routinely accepts financial kickbacks from attorneys” in the form of donations in exchange for directing potential clients to those lawyers.

Blaine denied the allegations and said the lawsuit was the latest in a long line of efforts to silence SNAP, whose sometimes confrontational nature, including sidewalk news conferences in front of churches and Catholic administrative offices, has angered church leaders and supporters.

“Since the beginning of SNAP we have been fighting people trying to discredit us and attribute ulterior motives to our work,” Blaine said. “This is nothing new.”

SNAP’s work gained momentum after The Boston Globe’s explosive 2002 series of stories on pedophile priests.

Today, SNAP has more than 25,000 members around the world, including many victims of clergy sexual abuse.

pli. Dan says that if the 30 stocks in the SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF (DIA-$197) increased by an average of just 6 percent annually for seven years, the Dow would top the charts at 30,000. So a 30,000 Dow may be easier than many pessimists can imagine.

The average dividend yield on the 30 stocks that make up the Dow Jones industrial average in 2016 was 2.5 percent, so if you invested $10,000 in the DIA last year, you’d have received $250 in dividend income.

Now, if the stocks in the DIA were to increase in value by a measly 3.5 percent annually, your total return would be (2.5 plus 3.5) 6 percent. And according to Dan, a 6 percent return, with all dividends reinvested, would grow your $10,000 DIA investment to $15,000 in seven years and the Dow Jones industrial average from 20,000 to 30,000. It’s really rather simple.

Dan says, “Between 1900 and 2016, the average annualized return, just on the DIA, was 4.8 percent, not including dividends.” And “the actual average annual total return for the DIA (with all dividends reinvested) for the last 116 years was 9.6 percent.

al total return when the historical average is 9.6 percent is an easy-pie shoo-in.”

You could hedge your bet by buying 100 shares of DIA and telling your broker to mark the purchase “reinvest dividends.” DIA pays a quarterly 56-cent dividend that usually increases each year. So the day the DIA dividend is paid, your broker could purchase a fractional share of DIA, which in this instance would be 0.28 share.

Therefore, at the end of the first quarter, you’d own 100.028 shares paying a dividend. And at the end of the year (three more quarters of reinvesting dividends), you’d own 101.18 shares that pay a dividend. Every quarter, your number of shares would increase, and so would the dividend income from the additional shares. There’d be no cost, and it would be automatic. And each quarter, your account would report the number of increasing shares purchased by your increasing dividends.

China’s first large homemade passenger jet to fly in 2017 The ASSOCIATED PRESS BEIJING – After years of delays, China’s first large homemade passenger jetliner will take to the air for its maiden flight in the first half of this year, state media reported Monday.

State-owned aircraft maker Commercial Aircraft Corp. of China Ltd., or Comac, based in Shanghai, has nearly completed work on the 175-passenger C919, the ruling Communist Party newspaper People’s Daily reported.

The C919 was originally due to fly in 2015, but has been beset by delays blamed on manufacturing problems. It is now scheduled to enter service in 2019, aimed at competing with the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737, along with the Russian Irkut MC-21.

Airbus and Boeing say the market for new aircraft will be worth more than $5 trillion over the next 20 years. Indus-

try experts say China faces a tough slog capturing a significant share of that market, even with government support.

Comac has 517 orders for the C919.

Company officials couldn’t immediately be reached.

The C919 is part of China’s efforts to develop a homegrown aviation industry in one of the world’s biggest and fastest-growing air travel markets.

China currently relies heavily on foreign-made aircraft.

Last June, the ARJ21-700, China’s first homemade regional jet, made its debut flight carrying 70 passengers. The jet is one of a series of initiatives launched by the party to transform China from the world’s low-cost factory into a creator of profitable technology in aviation, clean energy and other fields.

The ARJ21, also made by Comac, is a rival to aircraft made

by Bombardier Inc. of Canada and Brazil’s Embraer SA.

Esposito bowls 2nd 900 series in Illinois history

dgoss@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – Years ago, Sam Esposito and his friend at Strike N Spare II, Dane Walker, were joking about the ultimate.

“We said if either us ever bowled a 900 series, that we would quit bowling,” said Esposito, 26. “Well, on Saturday, he texted me and said, ‘Are you going to quit?’

“I told him no, I enjoy this sport too much.”

That’s right, in the Friday Night Classic League at Strike N Spare II, Esposito was nothing short of perfect with his 900 series – three consecutive 300 games, 36 straight strikes.

Who couldn’t enjoy that?

“It’s the kind of thing you dream of as a kid, pitching a perfect game or bowling a 900 series,” Esposito said. “But you never think it is going to come to that. I couldn’t imagine that it actually would hap-

pen.”

Esposito talked with a United States Bowling Congress representative Monday.

He was told the 900 has been approved and the paperwork for sanctioning should be finalized soon. When that happens, he will be the author of the second sanctioned 900 in Illinois bowling history and 32nd in the nation.

Andrew Mank of Belleville rolled the first Illinois 900 March 18, 2010. Jeremy Sonnenfeld of Lincoln, Nebraska delivered the nation’s first sanctioned 900 Feb. 2, 1997.

“It is crazy that there are only 32 of them,” Esposito said. “But the first guy who did it, a long, long time ago, they didn’t sanction it. I think his should be sanctioned.”

Esposito was a regular on the high school team at Lockport, where he bowled from 2005 through 2009.

“We finished second in the state to Lake Park in 2009, when I was a senior,” he recalled. “I placed 13th at state when we got fourth my sophomore year.

Esposito began his college bowling career at Calumet-St. Joseph in Whiting, Indiana. But he said he learned rather quickly that college wasn’t for him, and he returned home to work in his father’s business.

“I actually quit bowling for about 21/2 years after I left college,” he said.

The sectional, of course, also has some teams from outside the Joliet area that could merit top-eight consideration – West Aurora and Sandburg, for example. It will be fun to see how it all shakes out.

Meanwhile, here is the Herald-News weekly area rankings: 1. Bolingbrook (21-0): The Raiders, who are ranked No. 1 in the state in Class 4A, find a way to win every time they are challenged. As coach Rob Brost has said all along, however, their focus is to continue to improve, not worry about the record.

erberry’s strong effort on the boards keyed the Tigers in last Friday’s 5939 victory over Plainfield East. West is facing an opponent Friday night at Plainfield Central that has played almost everyone tough.

3. Joliet Central (19-3): The Steelmen continued their winning ways with a 73-53 victory last Friday at Plainfield South. Jose Grubbs continues to draw praise from opposing coaches. As South coach Tim Boe said, “Talk about an unselfish player. All he cares about is winning.”

4. Minooka (18-6): The Indians escaped Plainfield Central’s upset bid, 52-48, last Friday as Jon Butler scored 18 of his 27 points in the

Esposito said he has been averaging “about 220 to 222” in the Friday Night Classic League. “There is some handicap in there, too,” he said. “Mostly, it’s a good time bowling with friends.”

On the day of his 900, Esposito said he began work early, about 4:30 a.m. It was a busy day.

“I started thinking, ‘I’m not going to make it to bowling,’ ” he said. “I finally got there with 10 minutes of practice time left.

“Once we started, they just kept falling. One of the guys told me, ‘You look like you’re in a zone, and everyone around you is a ghost.’ ” Nobody buries 36 strikes in a row,

do they? Asked about any fortunate carries, Esposito recalled, “I had one pretty bad one, maybe the seventh or eighth frame of the first game. It was on the Brooklyn side. I turned when I threw it and said, ‘there’s a bad shot,’ and started walking back. Then everyone started screaming when it carried.”

He said he was unsure of his 36th and final strike.

“I got out five or six boards to the right of my target,” he said. “But it hit a dry spot and came back. When I threw it, I said, ‘uh, oh,’ but it came back.”

Esposito said he has rolled three or four other 300 games in his career,

“Usually, a 230 or 240 game is a big one for me,” he said.

Three 300s in succession? That’s Hollywood material.

Esposito shares a first and last name with a White Sox third baseman back in the 1950s and early ’60s and a last name with a couple of hockey greats, Tony and Phil.

“People ask me about that all the time,” he said. “Unfortunately, I am not related to any of them.”

That’s OK. He has done his own thing to put the Esposito name in lights.

Coaches’ online voting for seeds in the Class 4A Lincoln-Way East boys basketball sectional is scheduled for next week.

The objective for everyone is to win and impress as much as possible the next couple of games in order to secure the highest possible seed.

There were two games last week that make me wonder, if I were a voter, how would I line them up.

Those results are Lincoln-Way East’s 52-50 victory over Homewood-Flossmoor and Lockport giving No. 1 Bolingbrook a battle before falling, 55-49. How important is overall record? How much do quality wins, or quality losses, matter?

Of course, the No. 1 objective is to be seeded in the top four, or at least the top eight. You know that only one of the 1 through 4 seeds, and only one of the 5 through 8 seeds, will be in each regional. Generally, the 4-5 seeds are together in a regional, as are the 3-6, 2-7 and 1-8 teams.

So, who belongs where, based on what we know now? If I had a vote for the Class 4A Lincoln-Way East Sectional, I would put Bolingbrook, Joliet West and Joliet Central in the top three spots in that order.

Minooka and Lincoln-Way East are close at 4-5, but if the 4-5 teams are together in a regional, it won’t matter much who gets which spot.

By record, Lockport might have fallen from the top eight in some people’s minds. But the Porters play such a difficult schedule and have battled so many good teams that the feeling here is they still belong in the top eight.

Romeoville and Lemont can make a case that they deserve a top-eight

fourth quarter. The Indians entertain Oswego tonight and Romeoville on Friday night. Both games could be interesting. Oswego beat Romeoville, 60-48, last Friday.

5. Lincoln-Way East (16-9): The Griffins move back up to the No. 5 spot in the rankings after stunning Homewood-Flossmoor, 52-50, last Friday night behind Dorian Aluyi’s 13 points and 10 rebounds. East had been 0-23 against the mighty Vikings since the SouthWest Suburban Conference was formed in 2005.

6. Romeoville (12-9): The Spartans had a seven-game win streak snapped 10 days ago in a tough 69-66 loss to Joliet West. They followed that up with a 60-48 loss to Oswego, so they are looking to get back on track.

7. Lockport (10-12): The Porters lost last week to Joliet Central, 45-34, and to No. 1 Bolingbrook, 55-49, extending their skid to five games. However, giving the Raiders a serious challenge bodes well for the stretch run of the season.

8. Lemont (12-10): The Indians have one of the area’s top individuals in senior guard PJ Pipes. He scored 21 points in a 62-51 win over Oak Forest that ended a two-game losing streak.

9. Providence (10-12): The Celtics saw their seven-game win streak come to an end as they lost to St. Laurence, 38-35. However, they still have an opportunity to make a splash in the Chicago Catholic League Tournament.

10. Joliet Catholic (10-11): The Hilltoppers got back on the winning track got off to a hot start and held on to beat Nazareth, 52-45, last Friday. They hope to return to the .500 mark Tuesday when hosting Ottawa Marquette. A tough one awaits Friday night at St. Patrick.

The Cougars win 1st regional title with team effort

cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – After losing out on a regional championships by nine points last season and by just four points the year before that, Plainfield South’s wrestling team found itself in another nail-biter Saturday at the Class 3A Rock Island Regional.

But unlike the last two years when Moline claimed top honors, the Cougars’ competition this time was conference rival Minooka, who beat them in a dual meet last week. This gap was just two points, which was the second-closest of all the regionals in the state.

South only entered 13 wrestlers and had 138-pound top-seed Jake Kendall default because of injury after just one match. But South scored at 12 weights and prevailed, 171.5-169.5, over the Indians to capture their first regional championship, winning four titles and advancing nine individuals to this weekend’s Normal Community Sectional.

Coach Jason Acevedo’s team received titles from Enzo Silva (106 pounds), Zach Kolb (120), Erik Santiago (152) and Lalo Palomares (195), with the latter three claiming wins in the finals against Minooka, including two of those three wins being decided by just one point. For the entire day, the Cougars owned a 7-1 advantage over the Indians in head-to-head matches.

The Cougars coach pointed to several efforts of note. They included unseeded Andrew Cervantes bouncing back from a narrow quarterfinal loss to win four matches and take third at 126, unseeded Will Johnston winning his last three after a quarterfinal loss to place third at 170 and Dominic Ferraro’s decision to bounce up to 285, where he was the runner-up, to clear a spot at 220 for unseeded Justin Van Byssum, who finished fourth.

“Our goal was to win regionals,” Acevedo said. “We also had a goal to win conference again, but we had as many as five starters out in the last month. This is definitely the next step up and it makes it so much sweeter after finishing in single digits back the last two years.

“This was a full team effort. Being a younger team and not always having the individual success that previous teams had, they rallied around each other through the adversity.

There were times this year where we were put together by glue, BandAids, rubber bands and ice bags, but the guys never gave up and never lost faith. I’m so proud of these guys.”

Plainfield South’s wrestling team edged Minooka, 171.5-169.5, to win the Class 3A Rock Island Regional, the school’s first regional championship in the sport.

Palomares edged Minooka’s Drew Gutknecht 3-2 in the 195 finals to cap South’s scoring.

“Our goal was to win regionals,” Palomares said. “We were down by three points going into the finals and since I was one of the last matches, getting that win would pretty much seal it since our other guys in the finals did pretty good and scored a lot of points. Last year left a sour taste in my mouth and I know it did for everyone else so it feels good to get the

win.”

Santiago claimed a 13-5 win over Minooka’s Noah Boles to capture the 152 championship.

“The whole team came together as one,” Santiago said. “The past two years we came close and it’s been heartbreaking. The seniors wanted to go out and get our first-ever team title, and that’s what we did. Minooka is in our conference and we just lost to them so it was even more motivation for us. Now that we’ve finally got this, it gives us more confidence.”

Kolb started the 3-0 title run against Minooka when he won 2-1 over Dominic Ruettiger.

“Every match mattered and the extra bonus points that we got all counted toward our win,” Kolb said.

“Three of us had Minooka kids in the

finals and if any of those had gone the other way, it would have changed things. I heard a lot about the last two years and it took a lot of work by practicing before and after school and every day of the week to win this one.”

Silva captured his second-straight regional title to open the medal round on a good note.

“This feels great since I’ve been watching this program since my brother was here,” Silva said. “They hadn’t won a regional but we finally got one and I’m part of the team that did it. We’ve been working hard in the wrestling room. We all just focused and knew that we had to beat Minooka. When we faced them headto-head, we knew that we had to get it done.”

through the air, throwing just eight passes for an average of 14.4 yards per pass.

But from halftime until Kyle Shanahan’s second-and-11 call at the New England 28 after the Jones catch, Atlanta ran the ball 10 times for only 17 yards with one rush for no gain and four for losses, including the first down Freeman run that lost a yard.

There were still four minutes to play and the Falcons have thrown the ball in that situation all year long to get to the Super Bowl.

Not to mention Atlanta had just seen its 25-point lead whittled to eight in the last 13:30.

The Falcons were playing for the touchdown there, not a field goal, and they should have been.

“Well, we thought we’d have a good look based on the personnel that was in the game for them,” Falcons coach Dan Quinn said. “We trust our guys so we thought that was an opportunity to let it rip. When it doesn’t go that way, it’s easy to question it.”

Matt Ryan couldn’t have agreed more, based on who the Falcons are, not in defense of Kyle Shanahan.

“Too aggressive? No. I thought Kyle (Shanahan) did a god job,” he said. “I thought we played the way that we play. We always play aggressive and play to win. We had opportunities and we made some mistakes on the field that at the end of the day ended up costing us.”

Even Patriots defensive coordina-

tor Matt Patricia thought it was the right call.

“This is a great offense now, they have a lot of weapons and they can get the ball to a lot of different people,” he said. “They had a lot of success early doing it and we’re kind of thinking along those lines thinking that’s what they were going to do.”

Defensive end Chris Long took real exception to the idea Atlanta gave the game away in any way.

“They’re a great football team.

Coach Quinn is a hell of a football coach and that team, they attacked us,” he said. “In the end we just had too much belief. I don’t think it was like that, I think it was more we took it.”

Which brings us back to the Patriots’ defense. Long thinks the biggest play of the game was Dont’a Hightower’s strip-sack just three plays after the Patriots’ second field goal made it 28-12 and giving them a chance to come back and make it a one-score game.

“It wasn’t always sacks, it was hits, it was Trey (Flowers) with 2½ sacks,” Long said. “Defensively we stayed after everybody. Then Tom just took over.”

Brady felt James White could have been the game’s MVP, but the young running back said they knew at halftime it was up to the defense.

“If the defense could get stops, we could put up points and keep narrowing their lead and we just found a

way to get a victory,” he said.

After allowing the Falcons 189 yards and 21 points, including the pick-six off Brady in the first half, New England held the NFL’s No. 1 offense to just seven points and 155 yards on 27 plays in the second half.

The Patriots also had their lone takeaway and three of their five sacks in the second half, and they held Atlanta to 0-for-5 on third down.

Hightower said of his group, “I’m proud of all 11, 13, however many people that we have out there on this defense,” he said. “Nobody believed that we could come out here and do this.”

Super Bowl LI wasn’t about just one quarterback, play-calling or anybody choking. It was just a great game that perhaps Edelman, author of one of the greatest catches in Super Bowl history to propel New England’s game-tying drive, summed up best.

“Unbelievable. It’s the microcosm of our life, our season,” he said.

“Mental toughness, believe, do your job, work hard and we’d be champions in the champions’ game. We got to tip our hats, it’s a good football team over there. I respect the hell out of them, great competitors.

“We just came out on top.”

HOUSTON – I was in NRG Stadium Sunday night for Super Bowl LI, in the press box, in the interview rooms with the players and coaches afterward and yet like most of America, I still woke up this morning feeling like Atlanta must have won, didn’t they?

Patriot defensive end Trey Flowers said it best after the game.

“It’s crazy. I still can’t believe it,” he said. “It’s going to be amazing waking up tomorrow because this is like a dream. It feels like a dream.”

Even Tom Brady acknowledged, “Two years ago it came down to Malcolm (Butler) making the play and this year down 25 points, I mean it’s hard to imagine us winning.”

Offensive tackle Nate Solder explained the comeback a little differently and I believe with tongue in cheek when he said, “He (Bill Belichick) cast a wizard’s spell over us that changed everything.

“He said that we have to keep doing what we’re doing, play like we know how to play and not think about what happened. They have to score a lot more points to keep us down.”

And therein lies the storyline that few have figured out even on the morning after the greatest comeback in NFL postseason history.

The Patriots’ amazing win was about more than the brilliance of Tom Brady, James White, Julian Edelman and company, and it had little to do with the performance of the young Falcons, who were brilliant for three quarters and good enough to win against any other opponent.

And in spite of all the geniuses on Twitter and online that have never called a play in their lives either for real, or even before it was run while driving from the backseat, Atlanta’s play-calling had little to do with the outcome, either.

Let’s look at Atlanta’s decisions that led to the sack after Julio Jones’ unbelievable catch at the New England 27 and then the holding call that eliminated any chance at a field goal to make it a two-score game.

And let’s eliminate some alternative facts, starting with the Falcons were running the ball well.

Rally begs question: How do Pats rank in history?

HOUSTON – The Patriots have the biggest comeback in Super Bowl history. Cue the debate on whether it translates into the greatest dynasty in the NFL, and maybe where New England ranks among dominant pro sports franchises.

Perhaps the discussion hinges on the record-setting duo of quarterback Tom Brady and coach Bill Belichick.

There are some numbers that aren’t debatable, like most Super Bowl appearances for a team (nine) and a quarterback (seven). Brady’s five wins put him one ahead of Hall of Famers Terry Bradshaw and Joe Montana for the most by a quarterback, and Belichick’s five are one better than Bradshaw’s coach in Pittsburgh, Chuck Noll.

Bradshaw and Montana never had a Super Bowl rally that even remotely resembled the 25-point recovery engineered by Brady in a 34-28 win over Atlanta on Sunday night in the first Super Bowl to go to overtime.

“We’ve got the greatest quarterback,” defensive lineman Trey Flowers said. “Calm, cool, collected and just make plays. That’s what he’s been doing all his career.”

Green Bay won the first two Super Bowls with Bart Starr and has four titles. Bradshaw’s Steelers became the team of the 1970s, with Roger Staubach and the Dallas Cowboys not far behind.

Troy Aikman helped the Cowboys become the first team to win three titles in four seasons in the 1990s – and Brady matched him a decade later.

Starr, Bradshaw, Staubach (they called him Captain Comeback), Montana, Aikman.

Vince Lombardi, Noll, Tom Landry, Bill Walsh, Jimmy Johnson.

None of them have a claim to the sustained excellence of Brady and Belichick, the only duo to go to seven Super Bowls and win five.

“He cast a wizard spell over us that

changed everything,” tackle Nate Solder said of Belichick and the message at halftime, when the Patriots trailed 21-3 before going down 28-3 in the third quarter.

Joking aside, the Patriots probably never panicked because they can lean on things such as 16 consecutive winning seasons (Dallas has the record with 20) and an NFL-best 34 playoff games and 25 postseason wins for Brady.

“At halftime, I would say we weren’t down at all,” said Brady, who won his

fourth Super Bowl MVP award by leading two fourth-quarter touchdown drives that included 2-point conversions to force overtime. “We were disappointed in the way we played, and we knew that we could go out and do a lot better in the second half.”

Brady and Belichick fall short of the nine NBA titles that Bill Russell and Red Auerbach won together in Boston, or the six that Michael Jordan and Phil Jackson celebrated in Chicago.

There will always be arguments for the multiple dynasties of the New York Yankees, who have 27 World Series titles. Shortstop Derek Jeter and manager Joe Torre won four together in a span of five seasons from 1996 to 2000, not to mention Mickey Mantle and Casey Stengle or Lou Gehrig and Joe McCarthy.

And don’t forget about the Montreal Canadiens, who won 16 NHL titles in 27 seasons from the 1950s to the 1970s.

Then again, leagues were smaller and rosters were thinner back then, and the conversation was nearly about Atlanta ending its championship drought.

“To come back and just stall and just give Tom Brady a glimpse of a chance to come back, we did that,” Falcons receiver Taylor Gabriel said.

“It’s tough to lose like that in the Super Bowl.”

Instead, the spotlight is firmly back on Brady, Belichick and the Patriots, who might not even be done – they’re already favored to repeat in 2018.

Falcons’ fans still in somber mood after Super Bowl loss

ATLANTA – There were partly cloudy skies in Atlanta on Monday, but the overcast looming over the city seemed to be more from the gloom of the Falcons’ gut-wrenching Super Bowl LI loss.

Falcons’ fans are in a somber mood after their team blew a 25-point lead in a 34-28 loss to the New England Patriots on Sunday night. The abundant excitement that engulfed the city leading up to the matchup had been replaced by another heartbreaking sports setback for the A-T-L. Even for fans used to disappointment, this “L’’ was unprecedented.

“We came so far. We had the rings ready to be put on our fingers,” said Nylous Dickerson, a chef who watched from Dantanna’s, where he works at the CNN Center in the shadows of the Georgia Dome and the Falcons’ new

stadium.

“We gave that game away. We gave Tom Brady too many chances. It was a somber wakeup. I still don’t feel good about this.”

Dickerson, like many Falcons fans, might not feel well for some time.

New England won even though the Patriots never snapped the ball with the lead. If that wasn’t bad enough, the Falcons found ways to lose that had never been done: in overtime at the Super Bowl after leading by 19 points heading into the fourth quarter.

The hangover apparently was so crushing that there was hardly any rush-hour traffic Monday morning in city where traffic jams are the norm.

“We had a lady call in saying she didn’t want to go to work today,” said Carl Dukes of Atlanta radio show 92.9 FM The Game. “We had a student call in saying she told her parents she didn’t want to go to school because everybody would be talking about it. That’s the

feeling. Everybody is kind of still in shock about how this all went down.”

Teneshia Ethridge saw a change of demeanor in Falcons fans before and after the game. She said she paid nearly $5,000 for a Super Bowl ticket to sit five rows behind the Falcons bench and watched Brady throw for Super Bowl record 466 yards for her team’s loss.

Ethridge said fans had planned on partying after the game, but the loss sent most of them back to their hotel rooms in shock.

But this is Atlanta. The city has only one major sports championship in 169 combined seasons for its NFL team, Major League Baseball’s Braves, the NBA’s Hawks and two now-departed NHL teams, the Flames and the Thrashers. The Braves won the World Series in 1995.

Fans in Atlanta had hoped the Falcons would claim their first championship in their 51-year history. The anticipation was building throughout the

city days leading up the big game with several rallies, including one that featured Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed and R&B singer Usher at City Hall.

Rapper Ludacris narrated a short video clip called “A City Waits” in honor of the Falcons. After the loss to the Patriots, Atlanta faithful will have to wait longer.

“It was like a punch in the gut,” said Demetrius Lewis, an Atlanta native who used to play football at the University of Florida. He struggled with the fact that the Falcons led the entire game until Patriots running back scored in the winning touchdown in overtime.

“My stomach hurts after this one,” Lewis added. “We always come so close.”

Falcons running back Devonta Freeman could barely speak above a whisper while fighting back tears. But Freeman took to social media to thank fans for their support.

The Associated Press KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Royals knew at some point they would have to move on from grieving over the sudden and tragic death of Yordano Ventura and address the difficult task of replacing him.

That apparently came when the Royals agreed with right-hander Jason Hammel on a $16 million, two-year contract, a person with knowledge of the negotiations told The Associated Press. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity Monday because the deal is pending the completion of a physical.

The 34-year-old Hammel is expected to take Ventura’s place in the starting rotation. The 25-year-old flamethrower was killed last month in a car accident in his native Dominican Republic.

Hammel was 15-10 with a 3.83 ERA for the World Series champion Chicago Cubs last season and has proved to be a workhorse with at least 30 appearances in each of the past three seasons.

He is also intimately familiar with the Royals, pitching against the club with Tampa Bay, Colorado, Baltimore and Oakland before joining the Cubs.

It was with the Athletics in 2014 that Hammel appeared in relief against Kansas City in their dramatic wildcard game won by the Royals in 12 innings.

Also on that Oakland team? Designated hitter Brandon Moss, who was introduced at Kauffman Stadium last week after signing a $12 million, twoyear deal to replace Kendrys Morales in the lineup.

The Royals appeared to be content

with their starting rotation, anchored

by Ventura, Danny Duffy and Ian Kennedy as they prepared for spring training. Jason Vargas was expected back after missing most of last season following Tommy John surgery, and general manager Dayton Moore anticipated several in-house candidates to compete through spring for the fifth starter job.

That all changed when Ventura’s car crashed on a stretch of highway leading to the town of Juan Adrian, about 40 miles northwest of Santo Domingo. The young pitcher, who signed a $23 million, five-year deal shortly before opening day in 2015, was pronounced dead at the scene.

That left a much bigger void in the starting rotation.

With only a couple of weeks left before the Royals reported to Surprise, Arizona, Moore moved quickly to assess free-agent options. Hammel and Doug Fister were widely considered two of the best arms still available, but the Royals eventually turned their focus to the tall right-hander.

Hammel has a 4.42 ERA over parts of 11 seasons, though his best years have been his most recent. He 10-7 with a 3.74 ERA for the Cubs in 2015 before helping them to the championship last season.

Among the candidates for the final rotation spot are Nathan Karns, who was acquired from Seattle in a trade for Jarrod Dyson; Matt Strahm, who was electric out of the bullpen last season; Chris Young, who is trying to bounce back from a disastrous 2016 season; and youngsters Alex Mills, Miguel Almonte, Kyle Zimmer and Josh Staumont, all of whom may need more seasoning in the minors.

Minooka, Lincoln-Way West draw No. 3 seeds The HERALD-NEWS

BLOOMINGTON – The Minooka and Lincoln-Way West girls basketball teams have earned No. 3 seeds in their respective Class 4A sectional tournaments.

Minooka is No. 3 at the East Aurora Sectional, where Benet is No. 1 and Minooka’s Southwest Prairie Conference rival Oswego East is No. 2. Yorkville rounds out the top four.

Other area teams in the 22-team field include No. 7 Plainfield East, No. 8 Plainfield North, No. 9 Lemont, No. 10 Lockport, No. 11 Joliet West, No. 15 Romeoville, No. 19 Plainfield Central, No. 20 Joliet Central and No. 21 Plainfield South.

The predetermined regional hosts are Benet, Plainfield East, Oswego and Joliet Central. Each of them will play in the regional they host. Each regional is guaranteed to have one of the 1 through 4 seeds and one of the 5 through 8 seeds.

Lincoln-Way West is the No. 3 seed in the Shepard Sectional, where Homewood-Flossmoor is No. 1 and Marist No. 2. Mother McAuley completes the top four. Lincoln-Way East is fifth, Marian Catholic sixth, Lincoln-Way Central seventh and Crete-Monee eighth.

The hosts for the regionals feeding into the Shepard Sectional are H-F, Lincoln-Way Central, No. 11 Andrew

and No. 14 Stagg.

In Class 3A, the Hillcrest Sectional is divided into two sub-sectionals.

Sub-Sectional B has Providence as the No. 2 seed behind No. 1 Herscher.

Morris is third, followed by Rich Central, Rich South, Coal City, Rich East, Manteno, Kankakee, Tinley Park and Joliet Catholic Acedemy. The sub-sectional hosts are Providence and Kankakee.

The Class 4A and 3A regionals will be contested next week. Regionals in Class 2A and 1A are happening this week.

The Class 2A Princeton Sectional is subdivided. No. 4 Dwight is the highest seed among area schools, with others being No. 6 Reed-Custer, No. 7 Seneca and No. 10 Wilmington. Regional hosts are Putnam County and Momence.

In 1A, Gardner-South Wilmington, a regional host, is No. 3 in Sub-Sectional B of the Lexington Sectional.

49ers officially hire Kyle Shanahan as new head coach

The Associated Press SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The San Francisco 49ers officially hired Atlanta offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan as their new head coach on Monday, more than a month after firing Chip Kelly after just one season.

The 49ers settled on Shanahan a couple of weeks ago but had to wait until after the Falcons played in the Super Bowl to sign him to a contract.

Shanahan will be formally introduced at a news conference later this week.

Shanahan is the son of two-time Super Bowl-winning head coach Mike Shanahan, who also won a title as offensive coordinator in San Francisco

in 1994. The younger Shanahan served as a ball boy then but now will be tasked along with new general manager John Lynch with rebuilding a team that just matched the worst record in franchise history with a 2-14 mark, leading to the dismissal of Kelly and general manager Trent Baalke.

Shanahan won the AP award as the top assistant coach in the NFL this season when he helped the Falcons post a league-high 33.8 points per game in the regular season and return to the Super Bowl for the second time in franchise history. That ended in disappointment after Atlanta blew a 28-3 lead to New England and lost, 34-28, in overtime.

Shanahan came under criticism for his play-calling in the fourth quarter.

Wilms most common kidney tumor in children ages 3 and 4

PLAINFIELD – Aug. 16, 2016, started off as a normal day for the Rauen family – Amy and her husband, Joe, and their children: Noah, 5, and 3-yearold triplets Brooklyn, Joey and Nora.

Twenty-four hours later, Amy learned Brooklyn had a Wilms tumor.

Although it is a rare kidney cancer, it still is the most common type of kidney cancer in children, according to the Mayo Clinic. The tumor is most common in children ages 3 and 4, and uncommon in children over the age of 5.

This is how it happened.

Amy had taken her children to the park. They like to play “airplane” – where Amy puts her feet on their stomachs so they can “fly.” Later that day, Amy noticed Brooklyn had blood in her urine. So she took Brooklyn right to the doctor.

The next day, Brooklyn had blood work and an ultrasound. Twenty minutes after the ultrasound, the doctor sent Brooklyn to Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield.

“He said, ‘There is a 14-inch mass growing out of your daughter’s kidney,’” Amy said, thankful she had played “airplane” that day. “When I put my foot on her stomach, I jarred it and caused it to bleed. Otherwise, we probably would never have known.”

Wilms tumor often has no symptoms, but if symptoms are present, blood in the urine usually is one of

them. Other symptoms include abdominal swelling, a palpable abdominal mass and fever, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Hemihypertrophy may also be present at birth. Hemihypertrophy is a condition where one side of the body is noticeably larger than the other.

“We did not know this until the oncologist saw her for the first time and laid her on her back to measure her legs,” Amy said. “One leg is longer by a good inch and a half, and she should have been getting scans since birth.

But she’ll be monitored for the rest of her life.”

The tumor had grown into Brooklyn’s inferior vena cava, a main vein that supplies blood from the lower half of the body to the heart, Amy said.

“They could not do surgery without severe complications, so they decided to do chemo first,” Amy said.

After nine weeks of chemotherapy, the tumor retracted out of the inferior vena cava, and Brooklyn had surgery to remove it Oct. 10. Brooklyn then had six days of proton radiation and continued with chemotherapy, for a total of 28 weeks of chemotherapy, Amy said.

“After the last treatment on Feb. 21, we go for a scan to see if anything grew back,” Amy said. “They said there’s only a 10 percent chance something will grow back, but you just never know. The next part could be the other kidney or the lungs. One of her friends just passed away with the same cancer she had.”

Dec. 22 was a rough day for Brooklyn Rauen, 3, of Plainfield, who has Wilms tumor, a type of kidney cancer.

“That was the day she was the sickest she’d ever been,” said Amy Rauen of Plainfield, Brooklyn’s mother. “Ironically, that was the day they came with all the gifts.”

In November, Monica Mainland of Naperville, refinery manager at ExxonMobil, said she and her family attended an event at the Rialto Square Theatre in Joliet and bought a ticket to a raffle for a collection of toys.

To Mainland’s surprise, they won. So Mainland discussed it with her children – ages 9, 7 and 4 – and they decided to donate the toys to a couple of families in need.

“I reached out to Trisha Simpson, public affairs manager for ExxonMobil, and she put me in touch with Missey Schumacher [Channahon village president],” Mainland said. “She was able to match up the toys with some families that would really benefit from them.”

The Rauen family was one of those families. Local organizations Team Make a Difference and Shorewood HUGS helped coordinate the donations.

“We were just so honored they thought of us,” Rauen said. “So many families could have used it.”

Mainland said she and her children were happy to do it.

“If the donation brought them some joy and excitement,” Mainland said, “then our objective was met.”

Amy said her neighbor’s granddaughter was diagnosed with Wilms tumor in March 2016. The cancer was stage 4 at the time of diagnosis and had already spread to the lungs, Amy added.

Amy hadn’t known the granddaughter had Wilms tumor until Brooklyn’s diagnosis; Amy had only expressed sympathy and condolences.

“I didn’t go in depth with it until it hit home,” Amy said. “Then you become ultra-aware of all types of cancer. It becomes a new reality for you.”

How is Brooklyn handling the cancer and treatments?

“Being 3, she still kind of has her innocence,” Amy said. “She’s just kind of like, ‘Oh, I have cancer in my body; I have to be careful of germs.’ She’s not really understanding of it, but she’s definitely very brave when she goes for chemo treatment. She knows when they put cream on her port to numb it and says, ‘No cream, Mommy, no cream. They give me too much medicine and it makes my tummy hurt.’”

Brooklyn’s main side effects are joint pain, Amy said, but Brooklyn’s siblings are terrific distractions.

“I have strong faith in God,” Amy said. “Whatever happens, we’ll just deal with it.”

Will County Community Health Center offers reading program JOLIET – The Reach Out and Read Program continues to be a major part the Will County Health Department Community Health Center.

Children ages 6 months to 5 years of age are encouraged to get started on reading during their well-check pediatric exams.

Thanks to donated books and trained volunteers who read to the children while in the waiting room, families are encouraged to promote school success by including reading aloud as part of routine pediatric care and development.

A child can be read to by a volunteer while in the waiting room, and then receive an appropriate storybook to take home after their wellcheck exam. The goal is for each child to have 10 new books by the time they are school age. This can be

especially crucial for children from families who live below the poverty line, and may lack the money to supply their children with books.

In 2013, the community health center’s participation in Reach Out and Read earned them the Richard Robinson Award. Scholastic Inc. became the largest distributor of children’s books under Robinson’s leadership, which began in the mid-1970s.

In 2015, Reach Out and Read donated more than $2,100 to help the Community Health Center buy more than 1,000 age-appropriate storybooks to distribute to children after their exams.

During a case of shingles, even the touch of fabric on the affected skin can cause pain. The most common side effect is a condition known as postherpetic neuralgia, in which the severe pain of shingles persists for months or even years.

The good news (we imagine you’re ready for some about now) is there is a shingles vaccine. It’s made of live varicella-zoster virus that has been weakened greatly. It’s enough to stimulate an immune response in your body, but not enough to cause problems in anyone with a healthy immune system.

We routinely recommend to our patients who are 60 or older, and whose immune systems are in good order, they get a shingles vaccine. Protection lasts about five years.

Some drugs, such as those for rheumatoid arthritis, as well as some cancer drugs, suppress the immune system. In these cases, the shingles vaccine should be avoided. There are other contraindications as well, so talk it over with your primary care physician to make sure a shingles vaccine is the right decision for you.

For those who do get the vaccine, it’s important to note it doesn’t guarantee you will never get shingles. What it does is measurably lower your risk. And if you still do get shingles, the vaccine also reduces the likelihood of developing postherpetic neuralgia.

Dear Doctor: My daughter took her kids to the pediatrician the other day for their chickenpox vaccinations. Now, because I had chickenpox as a child, she’s after me to get a shingles vaccine. What is shingles, and what’s the connection to chickenpox?

Dear Reader: The same virus that causes chickenpox is responsible for shingles, a painful rash that can cause long-term problems. It’s possible to get shingles at any age, but it’s most common in adults 60 and older.

Here’s what happens. Once the fever, rash and body aches of a bout of chickenpox have ended, the virus that caused the illness, called varicella-zoster, stays in the body. It lies dormant near bundles of nerve along the spine, known as the dorsal root ganglia. These are the nerves that pass sensory information – a touch, a tickle, the pain of a bee sting – from your skin to your brain.

Years after the initial infection, for reasons that still aren’t entirely clear, the virus can become active again. As it begins to reproduce, the body reacts. Some people get flulike symptoms such as headache, sensitivity to light and a general feeling of illness.

Others notice their skin is becoming tingly, itchy or painfully sensitive.

When the shingles rash appears, it’s generally along only one side of the face or torso.

It can look like a stripe, as it traces the path of the affected nerves. Tiny blisters form and re-form on the skin and last for two to four weeks.

During this period, the person with shingles is contagious. He or she can pass along a case of chickenpox – but not shingles – to anyone without immunity. The virus can be spread by direct contact with fluid from the rash. That’s why anyone with shingles should steer clear of pregnant women, infants, unimmunized children and individuals with suppressed immune systems.

We live in a relatively small town, and our vehicles are very identifiable. All of the crazy road rage incidents I hear about certainly don’t help.
