Leach Windmill Company – Joliet Windmills of various designs and shapes have been known for many centuries around the world, principally for lifting water out of the ground and grinding grains. Immigrants to the New World brought Dutch-style and other windmill designs as early as the 17th century.

These early designs actually were buildings that were part of the milling process and required the care and maintenance of a full-time miller. In many New England areas, it was more common to find water-powered mills, given the regions topography and relatively wet climate.

By the mid-19th century, western expansion created the need for an improved method to pump water. The traditional wind pump was mounted on a post or a truss tower. The pump was driven directly by an axle that was made to rotate by the wind. In the beginning, both the towers and the rotor blades were made of wood, and only the axle and some other mechanical parts were made of iron or steel.

Often the wind pumps were installed near the farmhouse, as they had to be oiled and greased regularly, and when the winds increased, the pumps had to be turned out of the wind and a break had to be applied manually. These types of wind pumps needed constant surveillance.

As industrialization expanded during the 19th century, a wind pump with automatic power regulation was introduced.

Daniel Halladay, a machinist, inventor, and businessman, patented the first commercially viable windmill, known as Halladay’s Self-Governing Windmill, in 1854. Halladay had been approached by John Burnham, a local businessman, to develop a pump that could bring water to the surface.

Halladay’s patented design was revolutionary, as it allowed the windmill to automatically turn to face changing wind directions, and it regulated and maintained uniform speed by changing the pitch of the sails. The model had four twistable motor blades, and when the

A view near the old River Block location. wind speed increased, the force of the wind twisted the blades so that some of the wind passed through the rotor. All of this could be done without human oversight.

This self-regulating wind engine would inspire the development of many windmill companies around the country.

By the end of the 19th century, there were more than 75 companies that manufactured these types of wind turbines in the U.S. At the same time, technical development on the wind turbine continued.

In 1883, engineer Thomas Perry developed optimum metal-bladed windmills that were concave rather than flat wooden blades. His model was known as the Aermotor. In a series of experiments on windmill rotors and rotor blades, Perry discovered that his windmill design was more than 85 percent more efficient than other windmills manufactured at the time.

Locally, the Leach Windmill Co. was established in 1871, the same year Leander Leach patented his first model known as “Leach’s Wind-mill.” He began manufacturing and selling his steel blade windmill units in Wilmington. Leach was known to only manufacture his own windmill inventions but also manufactured earth augers and other well-boring machinery.

In 1874, the Leach Windmill Co. moved to Joliet and occupied three stores of a building that was located just south of town along a parcel of river land developed by local businessman John E. Bush and known locally as the River Block. The River Block, located at 714 S. Center St., was only 60 feet by 95 feet in dimension, but was home over the years to such businesses as the Robertson Barn Door Hanger Co., the Illinois Check-Bower Co., and the Bates Machine Co.

hlitchfield@shawmeida.com MINOOKA – Judy Delaney of Minooka attended the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre event at the Three Rivers Library Minooka Branch to hear historian, author and parapsychologist Ursula Bielski talk about Chicago’s most famous romantic and gangland ghost stories.

“I like to learn new things and visit with friends,” Delaney said. “It’s a nice way to learn about Chicago, and I’m not familiar with the stories.”

Carole Fremarek, on the other hand, grew up in Chicago, and while she’s aware of stories like those of Resurrection Mary, she is most intrigued

by the gangster scene, which is what brought her to the event Saturday.

As the event started, the shades were drawn and the lights were turned off, the glowing image from a projector providing the only light.

The story of gangster John Dillinger left the room silent as Bielski explained how he was set up by his girlfriend, Polly Hamilton, often referred to as the “lady in red.”

“Rumors have it that women dipped their clothes in his blood,” Bielski said, after explaining that he was quite the ladies man.

The killing of Dillinger wasn’t the only bad thing to happen in the alley where he was shot to death near the Biograph Theater.

From the 1950s until the 1980s there were three murders and one suicide in the alley, and there have been sightings since the 1970s of a man, who is bluish in color, falling in that alley.

Bielski said she doesn’t believe the ghost is that of Dillinger, but there is no way to tell who it might be.

She also said Dillinger’s last date with Hamilton could definitely be considered a “bad date.”

Bielski said whenever there are a lot of strange occurrences in a given area, you have to wonder if it has something to do with the area or with one of the people who died there.

“There seems to be pockets throughout the city and around the

world where things like this happen,” she said.

Keeping with the theme of bad dates, Bielski shared the story of a bad date at The Drake Hotel in Chicago, which happened on New Year’s Eve of 1920.

“A beautiful couple attended a party in the Gold Coast Room,” she said.

“The man excused himself to have a cigar with his friends.”

Bielski said that after the man’s fiancée waited and waited, she decided to go look for the man, and after not finding him in the cigar lounge, she was walking past the Palm Court tea room inside the hotel and heard his

Grace worked through him The Rev. Mark Fracaro loved theater, but loved serving people more

The Rev. Mark Fracaro loved theater so much that he had season passes to at least four theaters in Chicago, said Robert Weierman, Fracaro’s cousin and deacon at St. Dennis Catholic Church in Lockport.

“Twice a week he’d make a trip into Chicago, which would include two movies and a play or perhaps two plays and a movie,” Weierman said.

“About once every year, or twice if I was up to it, I’d go with him, and he would wear me out. I don’t know how he did it. He would walk so much and do so much in one day, and get ready to do it the next day. He was continually on the go.”

Fracaro took Weierman to theaters Weierman never knew existed, theaters that didn’t look like theaters. Once, Weierman asked Fracaro how many theaters Chicago had.

“He said, ‘About 75,’ ” Weierman said.

The Rev. Lee Bacchi, chaplain at St. Edward Hospital in Naperville who considered himself Fracaro’s best friend, said he spent nearly every day off with Fracaro for more than 35 years, and most of them were spent enjoying films and theater performances.

Of course, Fracaro always stood out on Chicago streets, Bacchi said, because of his penchant for signature hats.

“People would stop him and say, ‘That’s a really neat hat you’ve got on,’ ” Bacchi said. “That happened dozens and dozens of times.”

Fracaro also enjoyed acting with different community theater groups.

Bacchi recalled how both he and Fracaro once appeared in “Fiddler on the Roof” in Elmhurst. But Fracaro’s true dedication lay in ministry to others, especially those in the deaf community.

In 1976, the late Bishop Romeo Blanchette of the Diocese of Joliet asked Fracaro, who knew sign language, to temporarily serve in the diocese’s Deaf Apostolate Ministry. But Fracaro loved the ministry and continued it for the rest of his life.

“He was involved with deaf ministry before he was ordained,” Bacchi said.

“He used to work at a summer camp in the Lockport area somewhere.”

Bacchi met Fracaro when Fracaro was teaching catechism classes for religious education teachers in the diocese.

Fracaro impressed Bacchi with his approach to working with people.

“He was very thoughtful, very wise,” Bacchi said. “I couldn’t see him as anything other than a priest, to be perfectly honest.”

Anyone who ever saw Fracaro celebrate Mass, or asked Mark to hear confession or talked to him in a time of crisis would agree, Bacchi said. Many times Fracaro would be late to a meet-

ing with Bacchi with the explanation, “Someone stopped by the church.”

“You could feel there was something more than a human touch there,” Lee said. “There was a grace working through him. God’s grace was working through him. He was just so good; he was someone you could count on.”

Fracaro grew up in the Lockport area as part of the very large “Fracaro clan,” as Weierman called it, and family was very important to him. Fracaro attended St. Dennis School in Lockport, Quigley Preparatory Seminary in Chicago and St. Mary Seminary in Baltimore.

He was ordained May 27, 1967.

During his 49 years of priesthood, Fracaro was assigned to nine parishes, including St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Minooka.

A supporter of many charitable organizations, Fracaro also sponsored children living overseas and was an honorary member of the Knights of Columbus. Shortly before his death, Fracaro participated in his eighth World Youth Day in Poland.

6 at age 76 left the Diocese of Joliet without a dedicated person to minister to the hearing impaired community, Weierman said. But Weierman likens Fracaro’s passing this way.

“God had a special performance of ‘Fiddler on the Roof,’ ” Weierman said, “and needed him.”

Coroner: Joliet couple dead in apparent murder-suicide

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Joliet husband and wife are dead after an apparent murder-suicide over the weekend.

Police Chief Brian Benton said that about 12:45 a.m. Sunday, officers were called to the 400 block of Bluff Street after shots were reported.

Patrick Morgan, 49, and Angel Morgan, 42, were found inside their residence. At 4:10 a.m. Sunday, both were pronounced dead, according to the Will County Coroner’s Office.

“Our investigation indicates this was a murder-suicide and there is no threat to the public,” Benton said.

Benton said evidence at the scene indicated Patrick Morgan killed his wife and himself.

Autopsies performed Sunday revealed Patrick Morgan suffered a single gunshot wound and Angel Morgan had been shot multiple times, according to the coroner’s office.

Patrick Morgan filed for and received orders of protection against Angel Morgan in 2002 and 2016, according to Will County court records, while Angel Morgan was denied an order of protection against Patrick Morgan in 2009.

Angel Morgan filed for divorce last year, but the case was dismissed several months later.

The final cause and manner of both deaths is pending police, autopsy and toxicology reports, according to the coroner’s office.

LOCAL BRIEFS Joliet police find man shot in leg

JOLIET – Police said a man tried flagging down cars for a ride after being shot Sunday.

Joliet Police Chief Brian Benton said that about 4 a.m. the man was trying to catch a ride near Center and Campbell streets when officers approached and observed him bleeding from his calf.

“He initially said he fell down, but then said he’d been in the 2100 block of Ingalls Avenue when he’d been shot by someone unknown,” Benton said.

The victim appeared to suffer a “through-and-through” wound and refused to be taken to the hospital, Benton said.

The incident remained under investigation Sunday.

A ghost has been seen in the area ever since, Bielski said – sometimes in the Gold Coast Room, sometimes in the tea room and even on the 19th floor where she jumped to her death.

JOLIET – Police said shots were fired early Sunday during a fight outside a bar near the Louis Joliet Mall.

Joliet Police Chief Brian Benton said at 12:30 a.m. staff at Anthony’s Restaurant and Pub, 3151 Voyager Lane, reported a fight in the parking lot.

“During the fight someone fired several rounds in the air then ran away firing more rounds,” Benton said. “No one was injured, but one round struck one of the upper windows of the restaurant.”

Benton said “several known gang members” were present for the confrontation, but they would not provide any information to investigators.

This scenario plays out over and over in many ways every day when a sick child goes to school, to after-school programs and activities.

As adults, we’ve been advised over and over to take that sick day and not bring an illness into work. I was always taught to tough it out unless I couldn’t hold myself up. We can no longer live by that old standard.

St. Charles East High School closed its doors to clean every surface in the school after one-third of its student population came down with norovirus-type symptoms.

We still have several months before colds and flu begin to wane – May,

according to U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

To prevent the spread of viruses, the CDC recommends taking proper precautions including keeping students and staff home if they exhibit signs of illness. They go so far as to recommend the avoidance of perfect attendance awards for students and flexible sick leave policies for adults.

And they should stay home for 24 hours after no longer exhibiting signs of sickness, such as fevers, chills and sore throats, after medicines have been stopped.

We teach our children to cough or sneeze into sleeves instead of faces, hands or the air.

We encourage hand-washing or sanitizers (a good time is as soon as you leave a public place). But we also need to listen and act when they tell us they don’t feel well. Sometimes rest, love and maybe chicken soup at home is all that’s needed to get well, and keep the sickness from being passed to others over and over and over again.

Others will thank you.

No matter where you go out in public these days, it’s like being in a cesspool of germs.

We are offered wipes to clean the grocery cart before we enter the store.

The doctor’s office supplies face masks if you are coughing or sneezing.

The hand sanitizer is available on the way in and the way out.

Some germs are good and help strengthen the immune system once you come in contact. Others, not so much.

A recent round with the norovirus left me fatigued and exhausted. Within two weeks – bam! Head cold. And that’s after fighting off a respiratory infection that lingered for weeks earlier this season.

As a child in school (many years ago) we were sent with sniffles, coughs, sneezing, what have you. It was probably lucky for everyone else at Bangor Junior High that I woke up with a terrible stiff neck. My parents took me to the doctor and I was put into the hospital with viral meningitis – a less severe form of the disease.

If I hadn’t had the stiff neck, I may have gone to school and infected my classmates before the other symptoms appeared.

Harold E. Bessler, age 73, at rest on Wednesday, February 1, 2017 with his loving family by his side.

Harold is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Margaret (nee Gergacz); children, Brian (Mary Kay) Bessler and Scottie (Melanie) Bessler; grandchildren, Michaela and Margaret Bessler and Annabelle and Abigail Bessler; one sister; four brothers; numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Agnes (nee Johannson) Bessler; and one brother.

Harold was raised in Lake George, MN and enlisted in the United States Army, serving from 1964 - 1966. During his time in service, Harold was stationed in Germany. Harold obtained a bachelor’s degree in business from Bemidji State University. He moved to Chicago to pursue his career with the Internal Revenue Service in 1967. Harold then met his beloved wife, Margaret, in Joliet while on business, marrying in 1969 at S.S. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church. He was an avid weekly bowler for nearly 40 years at Town and Country Lanes in Joliet. Harold was also a dedicated coach for the Joliet Park District Organization, St. Raymond’s School and Holy Family School. After nearly 40 years of service, Harold’s retirement in 2002 from the IRS lead him to become co-owner of Moonstep Creative Staffing in Joliet with his son, Brian. Harold loved frequenting the Joliet area casinos where he took full advantage of his free vouchers, and enjoyed watching all sporting events. Most importantly, Harold enjoyed spending time with the light of his life, his grandchildren. He will be truly missed by all who knew him.

Lawmakers consider expanding Illinois immigrant protections

CHICAGO – Illinois legislators are proposing to boost immigrant protections statewide in response to President Donald Trump’s executive orders on immigration, a move advocates say would essentially give the state “sanctuary” status.

One proposal says schools, medical facilities and places of worship don’t have to give access to federal immigration authorities or local law enforcement working on their behalf.

Another proposal would limit cooperation and communication between local police and immigration authorities.

“If there was ever a moment for things to move, it is now, when we’re seeing immigrant communities under unprecedented attacks,” said Mony Ruiz-Velasco, a leader of a suburban Chicago immigrant organizing group called PASO. The legislation’s chances of passage are uncertain. Backers of Trump’s moves say he is just fulfilling promises he made during the campaign, and warn that “sanctuary” cities and states risk losing their federal funding.

Democratic lawmakers say the two statewide proposals are just the beginning of what they want to do. But the extent of any opposition isn’t known.

Rep. John Cabello, a Republican from Machesney Park, noted that any entities adopting sanctuary status risk losing federal funding. Trump has threatened to strip federal money from sanctuary states.

White House predicts courts will reinstate travel ban

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Rebuffed in its bid for a quick reversal, the White House said Sunday it expected the courts to reaffirm President Donald Trump’s executive power and reinstate a ban on refugees and travelers from seven predominantly Muslim countries from entering the U.S..

The case promised to extend into Monday at least, when fresh legal filings were due, and observers had no doubt the Supreme Court ultimately will have a say.

The San Francisco-based 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, in a brief order overnight, denied the administration’s request to set aside a Seattle judge’s ruling that put a temporary hold on the ban nationwide.

The lawsuit by Washington state and Minnesota said Trump’s order harmed residents and effectively mandated discrimination. Their lawyers had until 2:59 a.m. EST Monday to submit briefs opposing the government’s request. The Justice Department then had a 6 p.m. EST deadline to respond.

“We’ll accomplish the stay and will win the case on the merits,” Vice President Mike Pence said.

Members of Trump’s Republican Party scolded him for Twitter attacks on U.S. District Court Judge James Robart, appointed

by President George W. Bush, and accused Trump of stepping over the line that separates the executive from the judiciary. To Trump, Robart is a “so-called judge” whose

“ridiculous” ruling “will be overturned.”

Trump renewed his Twitter attacks against Robart on Sunday. “Just cannot believe a judge would put our country in such peril. If something happens blame him and court system. People pouring in. Bad!” He followed with another tweet saying he had instructed the Homeland Security Department to check people coming into the country but that “the courts are making the job very difficult!”

Pence defended Trump, saying “the president can criticize anybody he wants.” Pence added that he believes the American people “find it very refreshing that they not only understand this president’s mind, but they understand how he feels about things.”

At issue is the legality of a presidential action undertaken in the name of national security. Whatever the outcome and however the case drags on, a president who was used to getting his way in private business is finding, weeks into the jobs, obstacles to quickly fulfilling one of his chief campaign pledges.

“The president is not a dictator,” said Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif. “He is the chief executive of our country. And there is a tension between the branches of government.”

The government had told the appeals court that the president alone has the power to decide who can enter or stay in the U.S., an assertion that appeared to invoke the wider battle to come over illegal immigration.

Super Bowl ads go political in a big way

NEW YORK – Messages about America, inclusiveness – and, yes, even “four years of awful hair” – kept bubbling up in Super Bowl 51 ads from Airbnb, the NFL and a line of personal care products. But there was still plenty of escapism and light humor for those who weren’t into the politics.

As the New England Patriots edged out the Atlantic Falcons on the field in Houston, Airbnb touted inclusiveness with an ad showing faces of different ethnicities and the copy: “We all belong. The world is more beautiful the more you accept.” Coca-Cola aired a previously run ad in the pregame in which people sing “America the Beautiful” in different languages. Even a hair care brand dipped into politics: The “It’s a 10” hair brand indirectly referenced Donald Trump’s famously unruly ’do in its Super Bowl spot.

It’s tough to be a Super Bowl advertiser in during any year. But this year, a divisive political climate has roiled the nation since President Donald Trump took office in January, making it even tougher for advertisers.

Paying $5 million for 30 seconds to capture more than 110 million expected viewers, advertisers had to walk the line with ads that appealed to everyone and didn’t offend. Some were more successful than others.

“Anxiety and politics just loom over this game, so anybody who gives us the blessed relief of entertaining with a real Super Bowl commercial wins,” said Mark DiMassimo, CEO of the ad agency DiMassimo Goldstein.

Several ads aimed for just that.

Tide, for instance, offered a humorous ad showing announcer Terry Bradshaw trying frantically to remedy a stain while he goes “viral” online, with the help of New England Patriot Rob Gronkowski and actor Jeffrey Tambor.

WALKING THE POLITICAL LINE

Advertisers were treading carefully when it came to political themes.

“When it comes to politics, most brands prefer to stand on the sidelines, for good reason,” said Kelly O’Keefe, a marketing professor at Virginia Commonwealth University.

“Brands used to worry about whether their ad could be interpreted as right or wrong. Now they have to worry about whether it will be interpreted as right or left.”

But there were still plenty of ads that walked the line.

“The Super Bowl is shaping up as a counterpoint to the divisiveness in the United States,” said Tim Calkins, a marketing professor at Northwestern University.

Airbnb’s ad was one of the more overtly political, showing a variety of different faces with the tagline “We accept.”

Some thought the ad was a hit.

“Kudos to them for making a strong statement,” said O’Keefe. But others, such as Villanova University marketing professor Charles Taylor, thought it didn’t have a clear enough link to the brand and risked coming off as a “purely political statement.”

Some advertisers took the safest route possible by re-airing ads they’ve used before – an unusual, though not unprecedented, move. Coca-Cola, Google and Fiji water aired rerun ads.

During the pre-game show, Coca-Cola ran “It’s Beautiful,” an ad featuring people around the country drinking the fizzy beverage and singing “America the Beautiful” in different languages.

A debut Super Bowl spot by the “It’s a 10” hair care brand introduced its line of men products by joking about Donald Trump’s hair.

“America, we’re in for four years of awful hair, so it’s up to you to do your part by making up for it with great hair,” a voiceover states, showing black-and-white photos of people with a wide array of hairstyles. “Do your part. ... Let’s make sure these next four years are ‘It’s a 10.’ ” Snickers got tons of press by airing a live ad in the third quarter. On a Wild West set, Adam Driver seems to not know the ad is live. The set falls apart (on purpose). “You ruin live Super Bowl commercials when you’re hungry,” the ad’s tagline reads.

“It went by so fast, I almost missed it,” DiMassimo said. “Not sure it was

worth the trouble of doing it live.”

LIGHT HUMOR PLUS CELEBS

Ads with light humor and stuffed with celebrities were popular. Honda’s ad made a splash by animating the yearbook photos of nine celebrities ranging from Tina Fey to Viola Davis. They make fun of their photos – Jimmy Kimmel is dressed in a blue tux and holding a clarinet, for example – and talk about “The Power of Dreams,” Honda’s ad slogan.

“It was a really good message and it was entertaining,” said Mirta Desir, a New Orleans native who works in education and was watching the game on Long Island.

The Tide ad with Terry Bradshaw was a hit with some viewers because of the way it tricked viewers by seeming to be part of the broadcast. “It made you think twice,” said Pablo Rochat, watching in Atlanta. “There was funny dialogue and good storytelling.”

T-Mobile’s spots featuring Justin Timberlake and Rob Gronkowski dancing , Kristen Schaal in a “50 Shades of Grey” parody and Martha Stewart and Snoop Dog mixing talk about T-Mobile’s unlimited-data plan with innuendos about Snoop Dogg’s marijuana habit, won raves from some. As did an ad from antioxidant drink maker Bai featuring Justin Timberlake and Christopher Walken.

HOUSTON – Tom Brady led one of the greatest comebacks in sports history, highlighted by an unbelievable Julian Edelman catch that helped lift New England from a 25-point hole against the Atlanta Falcons to the Patriots’ fifth Super Bowl victory, the first ever in overtime.

The Patriots scored 19 points in the final quarter, including a pair of 2-point conversions, then marched relentlessly to James White’s 2-yard touchdown run in overtime to beat the Atlanta Falcons, 34-28, Sunday night.

Brady, the first quarterback with five Super Bowl rings, guided the Patriots (17-2) through a tiring Atlanta defense for fourth-quarter touchdowns on a 6-yard pass to Danny Amendola and a 1-yard run by White, which came with 57 seconds remaining in regulation. White ran for the first 2-pointer and Amendola did the deed with a reception on the second.

Brady, winning Super Bowl MVP for a record fourth time, finished 43 for 62, the most attempts in Super Bowl history, for 466 yards, also a record, and two touchdowns.

“You know, we all brought each other back,” Brady said. “We never felt out of it. It was a tough battle.

They have a great team. I give them a lot of credit. We just made a few more plays than them.”

Before the stunning rally – New England already held the biggest comeback in the final period when it turned around a 10-point deficit to beat Seattle two years ago – the Falcons (13-6) appeared poised to take their first NFL championship in 51 seasons. Having never been in such a pressurized environment, their previously staunch pass rush disappeared, they stumbled on offense and Brady tore them apart.

“Deflategate” far behind them, Brady and coach Bill Belichick won their 25th postseason game, by far a record. The Falcons added to Atlanta’s long history of pro sports frustration.

Belichick became the first coach with five Super Bowl crowns.

The Patriots won the coin toss for overtime and it was no contest. Brady completed six passes against an overmatched Falcons secondary. A pass interference call took the ball to the 2, and White scooted to his right and barely over the goal line.

His teammates streamed off the sideline to engulf White as confetti streamed down from the NRG Stadium rafters.

It was almost an impossible dream for the Patriots a bit earlier. But helped by Matt Ryan’s fumble on a sack, a Edelman’s catch off of a defender’s shoe, and Brady’s passing, they never stopped coming.

White scored three touchdowns and had 14 receptions for 110 yards, but Brady hit seven different receivers.

Until the Patriots took charge with their late surge, league MVP Ryan was outplaying Brady. It didn’t last.

Atlanta’s string of touchdowns on its opening drive ended at eight, though Devonta Freeman sprinted for 37 yards on the Falcons’ first offensive play. The drive was stunted when Ryan was sacked by Trey Flowers, New England’s leader in that category.

Then it was Atlanta’s D that went sacks-happy, getting two on the Patriots’ next drive in what would be a scoreless opening quarter. Who expected that? Well, New England has

not scored a point in the first 15 minutes in Brady’s seven Super Bowls.

It sure looked as if the Patriots would get on the board immediately in the second period as Brady and Edelman connected twice for 40 yards.

But Blount’s fumble turned the momentum to the Falcons, who then took their biggest lead in a Super Bowl – yeah, we know, they have been here only twice – on Freeman’s 5-yard run to cap a quick 71-yard drive on which Jones came alive.

Jones showed why he is an All-Pro receiver with a tough leaping catch over the middle for 19 yards, then got open on the sideline for 23. Freeman did the rest.

Before New England could catch its breath, Ryan had the Falcons up by 14. Using the no-huddle attack to perfection, he threw for 51 yards on a 52-yard drive, hitting Hooper with a pinpoint pass in the left side of the end zone.

Then Brady was victimized by his

own poor decision, a rarity on the big stage. Atlanta was called for defensive holding three times on third downs to keep the drive alive. From the Falcons 23, under pressure Brady tried to squeeze a throw to Danny Amendola.

Alford stepped in and sprinted, then glided 82 yards for the second-longest pick-6 in a Super Bowl – and Brady’s first.

Shockingly, it was 21-0.

New England gathered its wits for a 52-yard drive to Stephen Gostkowski’s 41-yard field goal. Still, it was 21-3 when Lady Gaga took the stage.

There was smoke hanging over the field when both teams had three-andouts to open the third quarter. It was a mirage regarding Ryan and Co., who marched 85 yards to Coleman’s 6-yard TD catch on a swing pass. While New England scored the next nine points on James White’s 5-yard TD reception – the extra point was missed by Gostkowski, who later made a 33-yard field goal.

Brady earns 4th Super Bowl MVP with epic comeback

HOUSTON – The greatest quarterback in NFL history led the biggest Super Bowl comeback to be the MVP on Sunday night.

Tom Brady rallied New England from a 25-point third-quarter deficit for a 34-28 win over the Atlanta Falcons in the first overtime game in Super Bowl history to earn his fifth Super Bowl title and fourth MVP trophy.

Brady threw touchdown passes of 5 and 6 yards in the second half and tied it at 28 when he connected with Danny Amendola on a 2-point conversion with 57 seconds left.

He then directed the drive in overtime that ended with a 2-yard run by James White to make the Patriots the first team to win a Super Bowl after trailing by more than 10 points.

“We all brought each other back,” he said. “We never felt out of it. It was a tough battle.”

His 466 yards passing are a Super Bowl record, surpassing the 414 yards Kurt Warner had 17 years ago.

He is the first to play in seven Super Bowls and the victory ties him with Charles Haley for most Super Bowl rings.

It’s a triumphant end to a difficult season for Brady, who missed the first four games because of his “Deflategate” suspension and dealt with his mother Galynn Brady suffering through an undisclosed illness. The Super Bowl was the first game she’s attended all season.

“They’re all happy,” he said. “It’s nice to have everybody here and it’s going to be a great celebration tonight.”

Brady also collected the MVP trophy in 2001, 2003 and 2014.

His incredible second half and overtime came after a first half where the Patriots managed only three points and he threw an interception, which Robert Alford returned 82 yards for a touchdown.

They owed ’em one: Edelman collects on crazy catch for Pats

The Associated Press HOUSTON – You could say the Super Bowl owed ’em one. Julian Edelman was the man to collect.

The Patriots receiver made a catch for the highlight reels Sunday – a oncein-a-lifetime grab that punctuated New England’s record-setting Super Bowl comeback, and one every bit as amazing as what David Tyree of the Giants did nine years earlier to break all those Patriots’ hearts.

The catch was the highlight of New England’s 91-yard drive that tied the game on the way to a come-from-behind 34-28 overtime win over Atlanta.

Edelman somehow got his hands pinned up against, and then underneath, a Tom Brady pass that bounced off Atlanta cornerback Robert Alford’s hands, hit off his knee, his shin, then tried to hit the turf.

Only it didn’t. Review upheld the 23-yard reception, the video clearly showing Edelman, with his red-gloved hands, first pinning the ball against Alford’s foot, then getting his hands underneath the pigskin as it bounced off the defender.

It gave New England the ball at the Atlanta 41 with 2:03 left in regulation, and the rest of this game almost felt academic.

the ball, including on James White’s game-winning 2-yard run to cap a 75yard drive on the first possession of overtime.

It gave Brady and the Patriots title No. 5 – a number that would’ve been bigger had it not been for what the Giants did to them nine seasons ago.

Then, it was Eli Manning somehow breaking away from a sack and heav-

ing the ball downfield to Tyree, the near-forgotten receiver who somehow pinned the ball against his helmet and came down for the catch. That was the highlight play of the winning drive that ended New England’s quest for an undefeated season and kept the Patriots stuck on three titles.

They got No. 4 two years ago, courtesy of Malcolm Butler’s game-sav-

ing interception at the goal line. This time, something nobody could draw up. Title No. 5 in Houston came courtesy of Edelman, who joined the Patriots two years after that disappointment against the Giants.

He finished with five catches for 87 yards, none more impactful than the 23 he gained on his catch that gave New England the momentum for good.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – Sergio Garcia shot a final-round 3-under-par 69 to win the Dubai Desert Classic on Sunday after holding the tournament lead since the opening round.

The Spaniard, who had never posted a top-10 finish in his previous seven Desert Classic appearances, finished on a 19-under 269, three strokes ahead of Open champion and top-ranked European Henrik Stenson (69).

Denmark’s Lasse Jensen, whose 65 was the low round of the day, finished tied for third with England’s Tyrrell Hatton (67).

It was Garcia’s first European Tour win since the 2014 Qatar Masters. In the interim, he also won the Byron Nelson Classic on the PGA Tour last

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Hideki Matsuyama won the Waste Management Phoenix Open on the fourth hole of a playoff for the second straight year, outlasting Webb Simpson on Sunday at TPC Scottsdale.

Matsuyama won with a 10-foot birdie putt on the short par-4 17th, the same hole where the 24-year-old Japanese star finished off Rickie Fowler a year ago.

Matsuyama closed with a 5-under 66, parring the final three holes to match Simpson at 17-under 267. Simpson birdied three of the last four for a 64, the best round of the day.

The tournament drew an estimated 58,654 fans Sunday to shatter the

weekly record with 655,434. The previous mark of 618,365 was set last year.

A record 204,906 packed the grounds Saturday.

Matsuyama took advantage of thirdround leader Byeong Hun An’s backnine collapse. Three strokes ahead of Matsuyama, An bogeyed the first two holes on the back nine and closed with two more. The South Korean player had a 73 to finish sixth at 14 under.

Matsuyama won his second PGA Tour title of the season and fourth overall. He has won five worldwide events in the past 31/2 months, also taking the WGC-HSBC Champions in China, two events in Japan and Tiger Woods’ Hero World Challenge.

He’s the sixth player to successfully defend a title in the event and the first to do it at TPC Scottsdale.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – North Carolina still looked at home Sunday, even as it played what was supposed to be an Atlantic Coast Conference home game roughly 50 miles from its arena.

Justin Jackson scored 16 points to help No. 12 UNC beat No. 20 Notre Dame, 83-76, on Sunday in a game postponed a day and relocated from Chapel Hill to Greensboro because of a water shortage.

“It’s a different environment and a different situation than you’ll probably ever have to really do,” Jackson said.

“But I thought we really grinded it out, even on a night when we didn’t shoot the ball too great.”

The postponement came Friday after the water system supplying the UNC campus and surrounding area instructed its 20,000 customers not to drink or use the water because of critically low supplies, brought on by a water-main break and the shutdown of a treatment plant.

But the Tar Heels (21-4, 9-2 ACC) still had a loud home-state crowd filled with blue behind them in a venue where they’ve played 143 times – most coming during the 26 ACC Tournaments hosted here.

The Tar Heels spent Friday night in Durham – home to rival Duke – and then stayed in Greensboro on Saturday night.

The Lincoln-Way East 285-pound wrestler, perhaps the No. 1 offensive lineman in the Joliet area last football season and will continue his career on the gridiron at Colgate, was maybe a little better Saturday.

Regardless, there was no way he was going to miss the Class 3A Lincoln-Way East Regional. He is ranked No. 3 in the state by Illinois Matmen and wants his last postseason as a competitive wrestler to be one to remember.

So Diehl went into Saturday with a plan that he executed to perfection.

Quick falls. If you physically do not feel like being out there but you have no choice, then the best medicine is to get it done in a hurry.

All Diehl did was win his first match with a 14-second pin, his second in 1:16 and the title match against Joliet West’s Robert Ford in 46 seconds.

He spent a total of 2:16 on the mat and earned three victories and a regional championship.

“Yeah, I’m a little under the weather,” Diehl smiled after claiming the title. “I still have the sore throat, but I had to power through it. I tried to rest as much as I could and get my matches done quickly.

“This is my last year wrestling and hopefully I will get to state. I was an alternate last year.”

“The beauty of the thing is he had the 102 temperature last night [Friday night],” he said. “You look at him today – it is what it is. He gets the job done even though he spent most of today sleeping.”

Diehl mentioned how happy he was that six of his East teammates – 195 champ Chris Wilder, 170 runner-up Dylan Conway and third-place finishers Jacob Abeja (113), Adam Aguirre (112), Nick Mihajlovich (182) and Jaden Hacha (220) – also qualified for the Normal Community Sectional. The Griffins finished a strong third in the regional with 168.5 points, trailing only champion Lincoln-Way West’s 232 and Marian Catholic’s 179.5.

“I’m very pleased,” Byrd said. “My expectations for us, and what other people might expect from us, are different. Still, I knew how much of a long shot we were to win this [and advance to the dual-team sectional], so for us it was a qualifying tournament. The guys did their jobs.”

REGIONAL NOTES

Joliet Central had two in the finals as Santos Gonzalez (152) and Isaiah

Davis (195) wrestled for third place and a sectional berth. Gonzalez fell Lincoln-Way East’s Aguirre on a pin in 1:54. Davis was down, 4-1, in the third period to Lincoln-Way Central’s Mason Sargent, but came up with a fall at the 5:43 mark to earn a sectional berth.

Steelmen coach Gardner Coughlen said he was happy to get the pair to the finals, with one moving on to the sectional. “We’re very young,” he said. “Our guys are learning, gaining experience.”

• Among Couglen’s assistants is Pat O’Connell, a face of wrestling in Joliet.

When I saw O’Connell, he asked me if I had heard the news. He said he learned in January that he is cancer-free. How tremendous that news is.

“A lot of prayers were answered,” he said.

• O’Connell mentioned that Joliet West’s Austin Poch, who won the 120 title, 13-4, over Lincoln-Way West’s top-seeded Chris Kennedy, is the first signing for the reinstated Joliet Junior College wrestling program, which O’Connell worked so hard to help bring about.

“I’m going to wrestle at 125 for JJC,” Poch said. “Not only will it be a good program to wrestle in, but I’ll be close to home so I’ll be able to come out and support the Tigers [Joliet West].”

• Joliet West also advanced Ford, Jeremy Pullen (138), Eric Davis-Smith (126) and Jake Aharrah (170) to the sectional. Aharrah lost his opening match,

1-0, to eventual champion Kyle Quinn from Lincoln-Way West, then strung three straight pins to finish third.

Joliet West’s Cristian Rojas (106), Marco Paramo (132), Josh Durrly (145) and Jonathan Pullen (160) dropped third-place matches, so the Tigers were on the brink of having an even larger sectional contingent.

“We have a good team,” Poch said.

“We support each other as best we can.”

From a personal standpoint, Poch said his goal is to try to get to state.

“I’ve made it to the blood round and not gotten through it three years in a row at sectional,” he said.

• Lincoln-Way West coach Brian Glynn acknowledged he knows little about Plainfield South, which will face the regional champion Warriors in a dual-team sectional Feb. 21. That is something to work on later.

“It’s strictly an individual thing right now,” he said. “We have six or seven guys [the Warriors advanced 12 of their 14 through the regional] who realistically have a shot at getting to state.”

Glynn said there will not be anything different this week in terms of preparation for the sectional.

“The guys already are in the best shape they are going to be in,” he said.

“We’ll do our usual.”

Plainfield boys swimmers win first conference title The HERALD-NEWS OSWEGO – Plainfield’s co-op boys swimming team made history by capturing the first conference title in program history when it won the Independent Conference meet.

Ryan Netzel won the 100 and 200 freestyle and was on winning 200 free and 400 free relays. The 200 free relay also included Marc Avery, Merek Avery and Alex Dvorak while the 400 free relay also featured Marc Avery, Ryan Crafton and Dvorak. LOCKPORT – Although it wasn’t the biggest margin of victory in Class 3A, the 98.5-point win in its own regional by Lockport’s wrestling team certainly was as impressive as any.

That’s because the top-ranked Porters dominated against a field featuring No. 5 Providence Catholic, No. 17 Oswego and No. 18 Plainfield Central as well as five other individuals from different schools who were stateranked.

The dominating performance resulted in 13 Porters advancing to this weekend’s Normal Community Sectional. Coach Josh Oster’s squad won eight championships while three others competed for titles.

Lockport went 34-7 overall, recording 15 falls and five technical falls and over two-thirds of its victories resulted in bonus points. The Porters also picked up six wins by two points or less, went 7-5 against ranked individuals and were 8-2 head-to-head against the Celtics.

Matt Ramos started the championship success by upsetting Celtic Jacob Lindsey, 3-2, at 106, his second-straight narrow win over a ranked competitor.

“You just have to be aggressive at all times and never let your guard down, because if I had, I wouldn’t have won that match,” Matt Ramos said. “I was looking forward to wrestling him and I’m ready to see him at sectionals. My team motivated me because they told me that I could do it and if it wasn’t for them, I probably wouldn’t have been more aggressive.”

That aggressive style of wrestling extended into the next finals match at 113 where Anthony Molton followed up on two falls with a 16-4 victory.

“Our team competed very well and we all put in our contributions to win this so that we’d make it to team sectionals,” Molton said. “Everybody started winning and then we knew that we had this. I feel like I’ve got to work on a little bit more, but I’m going into the sectional good. We all make each other a lot better in every practice for these tournaments.”

Brandon Ramos also knocked off two higher-ranked opponents at 138, beating Plainfield North’s Luke Smiley, 4-3, in the finals to capture his third-straight regional. Like eight of his teammates, he recorded a fall during his initial match.

“When you can get those double-point pins, we took them, and that showed on the scoreboard. We’re ready to go and we’ve been talking about this since the first day. We’re good enough to be on top of the podium.”

Baylor Fernandes followed that with his team’s fifth title. In the 145 finals, he captured a 7-0 win over Providence’s Juan Bazaldua in another matchup of state-ranked competitors.

“I just want to keep peaking until the state finals and keep getting better and better each week until it’s all over,” Baylor Fernandes said. “I feel very confident about our team with state coming up and I think we have a very good chance at team state. It was kind of unexpected that we were going to do this good. It was a good feeling to get such a big lead.”

Payton Fernandes was the lone Porter to record three falls. He saved

his quickest pin for last, needing just 1:12 to capture the 182 title over Neuqua Valley’s AJ Lighthall, avenging his only Illinois defeat in the process.

“We did great,” Payton Fernandes said. “We thought we were going be close with Providence and we ended up beating them by about 100 points.

And I wasn’t expecting to have three pins, either. I was sick when I wrestled him before so I wanted some revenge. Last year, I didn’t make it out of the sectional and this year I’m expecting to make state.”

There were several positives for the Celtics. Although they had just two champions, eight will move on to the sectional, including four who claimed third place.

One of their best stories involved Logan Anderson, who was going to bypass the season to focus on football and baseball, but got talked into competing by coach Keith Healy. He got

a pin in 37 seconds over Lockport’s Yousif Salah to win the 220 championship.

“Lockport wrestled better than us but I’m not going to give our team the short end of the stick,” Anderson said. “This helps my self-esteem going into the sectional. We’re going to go back to practice and fine-tune some stuff. I wasn’t going to wrestle, but the coaches were on me to try to do it again and I finally gave in and said that I’d do it and I’m happy I did.”

Baylor rocked by wave after wave of ugly allegations

The Associated Press AUSTIN, Texas – The allegations against Baylor, its football program and former coach Art Briles, get uglier with each new lawsuit and legal filing.

Among the most recent: More than 50 acts of rape by dozens of football players in four years. Briles asking why an alleged rape vic- Art Briles tim would hang out with “bad dudes” (his own players). And coaches encouraging female students in a hostess group to have sex with recruits.

And they keep rolling in, deepening the public disgust and mistrust with the nation’s largest Baptist university as it tries to fight lawsuits, settle others and fend off withering criticism from all sides as to how things spun so out of control with a sexual assault scandal that included multiple accusations against the football program.

“It seems relentless,” said Fred Norton Jr., president of the Baylor Line Foundation, the school’s alumni organization. “It’s all unsettling. Nobody knows what’s going to be the next shoe to drop. It wears us all out to have to keep defending what Baylor really is, the true Baylor we know.”

Baylor faces at least six federal and state lawsuits as well as a federal civil rights investigation into claims the school and football program, which Briles built into a Big 12 champion from 2008-2016, ignored, mishandled or tried to cover up reports of sexual or physical abuse and other criminal misdeeds across campus for years.

One court filing last week alleges more than 50 acts of rape by more than 30 football players over a four-year period, and that Baylor football promoted a culture of “sex, drugs and violence.”

And after months of refusing to release details from its own investigation , Baylor on Thursday revealed text messages between Briles, assistant coaches and staff members that appear to show them trying to shield players from police and university discipline.

In one instance, when shown a list of names of players a woman said attacked her, Briles allegedly responded, “Those are some bad dudes. Why was she around those guys?”

To date, only two of Briles’ former players have been tried and convicted of sexual assault, and another is currently charged in a 2016 assault. But the university’s own investigation

that led to Briles’ firing last May determined his program acted “above the rules” and the school mishandled assault complaints across campus for years.

The civil lawsuits started piling up as alleged victims came forward with claims of assault and investigative misconduct or incompetence by the school.

And it wasn’t just victims suing the school. Two of Baylor’s former inhouse investigators have sued or filed complaints with federal officials alleging Baylor mishandled assault investigations and retaliated against them for doing their jobs. Even Briles sued, alleging Baylor regents and officials had libeled and defamed him in comments to investigators and the media.

Briles this week dropped that case, but it was a similar lawsuit by Collin Shillinglaw, one of Briles’ top assistants, that finally prompted Baylor regents to reveal some of the details uncovered by the school’s 2016 investigation led by the Philadelphia law firm Pepper Hamilton.

In a 52-page narrative response to Shillinglaw’s lawsuit, the regents said Pepper Hamilton determined Briles ignored sexual assaults by players, failed to alert university officials or discipline athletes and allowed them to continue playing. It suggested Shillinglaw was helping shield athletes from punishment, too.

Gaines West, Shillinglaw’s attorney, said, “We look forward to the complete truth being revealed.”

Briles’ attorney, Ernest Cannon, said: “Art Briles is trying to go on with his life. I think Baylor regents would be better served if they would, too.”

School regents had released few details behind the investigation that led to the firing of Briles, the ouster of former President Ken Starr and the eventual resignation of athletic director Ian McCaw, who is now at Liberty University.

The lack of details drew fierce criticism from students, alumni and donors, including Bears for Leadership Reform, a group that includes several prominent Baylor donors and Briles supporters, notably Drayton McLane, whose names adorns the Baylor’s new $250 million football stadium.

The regents’ court filing Thursday said they had no choice but to reveal some of the details of what they found.

“There is no question that the Regents, after a long, self-imposed silence, had to respond with truthful statements, to correct the record in an attempt to end the widespread misinformation,” the filing said.

SOFIA, Bulgaria – A cat named Pooh has been given a new lease of life in Bulgaria, becoming the country’s first “bionic cat” with a pair of prosthetic hind legs.

Veterinary surgeon Vladislav Zlatinov carried out the operation that in Europe has only previously been done in Britain. He was aiming to give the fluffy, black-and-white cat who was probably hit by a train a chance at the sort of independence that the traditional solution – a set of wheels – would never have offered.

Zlatinov relied on a few publications in scientific journals. With no commercial implants available, the parts had to be custom-built.

At the end of the complex surgery, Pooh had a pair of titanium legs implanted into his body. They are connected to external prostheses that can be changed like shoes.

Pooh had to recover for six weeks before he could test out his new limbs.

Now, he is getting used to them, Zlatinov said, adding that Pooh notices the prostheses and tries to keep them clean.

Since the surgery on Pooh, Zlatinov has operated on three more cats, and more are on the waiting list.

Aspirin helps heart attack patients Dear Doctor: I just read your column about a daily aspirin regimen, which raised these questions for me: If someone appears to be in the middle of a heart attack, should you try to give them an aspirin? Also, does it pay to keep aspirin in the house just for that purpose?

Dear Reader: To answer your questions, let’s first review how heart attacks happen.

They are caused by a sudden decrease of blood flow to the heart via the coronary arteries.

Although a heart attack can happen suddenly, the risk rises over time if you have vascular damage to the lining of these arteries. That damage, termed atherosclerosis, occurs when cholesterol and other substances form plaque inside the coronary arteries.

When plaque in one of the coronary arteries is disrupted, small particles in the bloodstream called platelets attach to one another at the area of the disruption and form a blood clot. This blood clot causes a sudden lack of blood flow to the muscle of the heart and thus a lack of oxygen to the heart. Without oxygen, that portion of heart muscle will die.

Aspirin targets the platelets at the core of these clots. Platelets clump together at the site of a wound. Usually, that’s a positive.

Any time you get a cut in your skin, these platelets activate and attach to one another to stop the bleeding. Aspirin reduces these platelets’ ability to attach to one another. In heart disease, aspirin works to prevent clots, but also to prevent the clots that have formed from becoming worse.

The first large study to show a benefit from aspirin among people suffering from a heart attack was a 1988 study published in the medical journal Lancet. As part of this study, researchers gave people who recently had symptoms of a heart attack either aspirin or a placebo. The aspirin was given at least 24 hours after the beginning of symptoms, with the median time being five hours after onset.

The measured death rates at five weeks of the 8,587 people who took the aspirin showed a decrease in death from vascular disease of 23 percent, compared to the 8,600 in the placebo group. It is difficult to know how much of this benefit was from the immediate aspirin and how much was from the daily aspirin given for 30 days.

In healthy people taking aspirin, the anti-platelet impact takes effect about 20 minutes after swallowing the compound. But in those who are having a heart attack, the absorption of aspirin decreases, so it may take up to two hours for aspirin to have the same effect. A 2002 study in Israel that was published in the American Journal of Cardiology showed lower death rates among people who were given aspirin sooner rather than later. The earlier users in this study received aspirin on average 1.6 hours before the onset of symptoms.

The American Heart Association recommends immediate aspirin be given at doses of 160 to 325 milligrams to people with symptoms of a heart attack. Because of the decrease in aspirin absorption in those having a heart attack, the recommendation specifies the aspirin be chewed. If someone around you is having a heart attack, the most important thing is getting that person to the hospital.

If you have an aspirin, give it to the person immediately. And, to answer your question: Yes, it would be a good idea to have aspirin in the house for this purpose.
