JJC officials plan next year’s budget with tuition increase options

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet Junior College officials are seeking a tuition increase to help with potential financial issues that several at Tuesday’s Board of Trustees meeting blamed on the state budget crisis.

JJC officials proposed two options for a tuition increase for the fiscal 2018 budget that assumes the college will only receive 50 percent in state funding.

With the current total tuition and fee rate at $125, one option would increase it by about $21 and the other would increase it by about $16 and include differential tuition, or an additional tuition rate charged to courses that are costly to the college.

A decision on tuition recommendation would be made on March 14.

At the board meeting, JJC President Judy Mitchell said she was not hearing any optimism about the state budget. Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and a Democratic-controlled Legislature have been in

a stalemate over the budget for two years.

Mitchell said JJC has reduced its operating budget over the past several years and continues to do more with less while trying to boost student enrollment.

“We have been very effective with our budget. We have been doing a great job, but we have nowhere else to go,” she said.

Board Vice Chairman Andrew Mihelich said there are many state lawmakers that are friends of the college, but they have to assume responsibility for the crisis, not just Rauner or House Speaker Michael Madigan.

“It’s all of our legislators that aren’t moving to pass a budget and we got to take that responsibility to them because the

governor and the party leadership doesn’t seem to care,” Mihelich said.

Several board trustees discussed having students reaching out to state lawmakers about how the state budget impasse is affecting them, with Mihelich saying JJC has “got to put the blame where the blame belongs.”

Part of one option to increase tuition includes differential tuition. Randall Fletcher, the college’s academic affairs vice president, said differential tuition would apply to certain courses that are costly for the college to run because of class size requirements, equipment and cost of salaries.

He said differential tuition would apply to certain courses in agricultural and horticultural sciences, culinary arts, public safety, technical and veterinary medical technology.

“These are high wage, high demand careers,” Fletcher said.

Mihelich and Trustee Alicia Morales said they were supportive of differential tuition.

Search concludes; no remains found in home

bstanley@shawmedia.com TROY TOWNSHIP – After a nearly weeklong search of a Joliet area home, police have announced that they have not found the remains of a Rolling Meadows man who disappeared more than 40 years ago.

The Rolling Meadows Police Department concluded the search of the property at 1113 Barber Lane in unincorporated Troy Township near Joliet, according to a department news release distributed Tuesday.

The search, which began Jan. 25, was conducted due to credible leads obtained regarding the 1975 disappearance of Michael Mansfield from his Rolling Meadows home, the news release stated.

police did not immediately return a call seeking further comment Tuesday and have declined to provide details beyond those included in department news releases throughout the investigation.

Mansfield attended Lincoln College with Russel Smrekar, a Joliet man who confessed to the killing while he was dying in prison while serving a sentence for two other murders. Smrekar, however, did not tell police where Mansfield’s body was.

According to Herald-News files, Smrekar committed a string of petty crimes in the Joliet area during the early 1970s. While a student at Lincoln College in 1976, he murdered two witnesses who had seen him steal two steaks from a grocery store the year before. Another witness who saw him throw the meat under a parked car disappeared and was never found.

According to a 2005 Herald-News story, Mansfield witnessed the theft of 80 records and a guitar from a dormitory room.

Smrekar took the records to Mansfield’s room. But Mansfield dumped them down a stairwell.

Mansfield disappeared from his Rolling Meadows home Dec. 31, 1975, after receiving a phone call. His body has never been found.

Since Jan. 25, investigators had been at the vacant single-story gray ranch house looking for clues to Mansfield’s fate.

The property at Barber Lane has a separate garage set behind the house. A wooded lot and a small creek are next door. Police had set up several tarps and a tent and appeared to be excavating in the basement or crawlspace.

The department was assisted by the Cook County Major Case Assistance Team, the North Regional Major Crimes Task Force and the FBI. It received logistical support from the Will County Sheriff’s Office and the Cook County Department of Homeland Security.

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Obamacare has come, and Obamacare may go, but the Will-Grundy Medical Clinic goes on.

The passage of the Affordable Care Act, now facing the threat of repeal, created a perception that more people have access to health insurance than actually do, said Shawn West, executive director of the Will-Grundy Medical Clinic.

“We want people to understand why the clinic still needs to be here despite the implementation of the Affordable Care Act,” West said. “There are still a lot of people in need of health care.”

The clinic has served more than 1,000 patients in the past year.

Many old patients went away when the Affordable Care Act was passed,

West said. But new ones came – many with more serious health problems than the patients previously treated at the clinic.

What if President Donald Trump and the Republican Congress follow through on their plans to repeal Obamacare?

“If he completely repeals the Affordable Care Act, we’ll see thousands of patients come back,” West said.

The continued need for a free clinic is one reason an open house is being held Feb. 9. The Will-Grundy Medical Clinic is seeking more board members with new talents to bring to the nonprofit.

Mike Rittof, a local banker who lives in Channahon, is the vice chairman of the board.

“We’re looking for individuals who are passionate about helping those in need,” Rittof said. “We need time, talent and treasure. Fundraising for the organization has been a challenge in recent years. We need board members who are leaders not only in their time but their treasure.”

Appreciation of the free clinic’s mission may have diminished since the passage of the Affordable Care Act. “There’s kind of a misconception that as soon as Obamacare arrived everybody had health care, and that’s just not the case,” Rittof said.

Wal-Mart graduates first training academy class

mmallory@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – The Wal-Mart Supercenter at the northwest corner of 127th Street and Route 59 is home to one of the retailer’s first training academies.

The retail giant announced plans last year to open 200 such academies across the country.

On Tuesday, the store held a graduation ceremony for the graduating associates, who make up the first class to graduate from the Plainfield location.

They wore caps and gowns and were announced by name. Afterward, balloons were released from the ceiling.

Friends of the Plainfield Park District Foundation attended, as did a local Boy Scout troop and members of the Plainfield Area Chamber of Commerce.

Wal-Mart presented the park district nonprofit with a check for $2,500. WalMart Academy manager Joseph Salamone said the company and its associates have a commitment to serving the community.

“We know you will put the money to good use,” Salamone said.

The new training program is called Pathways, which Wal-Mart created for associates at all levels of store operations. Participants learn core retail skills and the leadership ability to run a specific department.

Having the training academies at various stores rather than one destination offers several benefits, according to a news release. Associates don’t have to travel far to receive training. At the same time, they can train away from their home store for two weeks while

Sprague cited rapid changes in retail as a key reason why Wal-Mart is opening training academies.

Sprague said the training academies are home to the best of the best.

Eric Galle, market manager of Market 265, read two stories written by associates about their personal growth through the company. One associate described himself as a “punk” who entered the company out of high school and learned discipline and work ethic.

Now he’s progressing to a leadership role.

HAJ seeks solution on Water’s Edge job controversy

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Advertising for subcontractors will be increased in an attempt to attract more minority bidders to the Water’s Edge construction project.

Representatives from the Housing Authority of Joliet met with Carlson Construction last week to discuss ongoing complaints that not enough African-American contractors and workers were getting jobs at the site.

One solution is to create more awareness of jobs coming up for bid, said Glenda McCullum, an authority commissioner who was part of the committee that met with Carlson.

“We resolved that we would get some fliers out and advertise what will be coming up for bid,” McCullum said.

Signs also will be posted at the work site on Des Plaines Street, drawing attention to upcoming bids, she said.

More details of the discussion will be presented next week to the Joliet City Council, McCullum said.

Authority Chief Executive Officer Michael Simelton will speak on the Water’s Edge hiring controversy at the city council meeting next Tuesday.

Simelton would not answer questions Tuesday about the matter.

“We’re going to address it at the council meeting,” he said.

African-American workers and

contractors have contended that they are not getting a fair share of work on the project.

Mayor Bob O’Dekirk went to the last housing authority board meeting in January to insist that the board find a way to get more minority contracts and workers on the job. O’Dekirk said city officials have been getting complaints and have held several meetings with disgruntled contractors and workers.

Water’s Edge is a mixed-income development being built on the former site of Des Plaines Garden Homes, a housing authority apartment complex that was demolished in 2016.

Carlson Construction has said that

it is following federal regulations requiring that authority residents and people in the surrounding community be sought for work on such housing projects.

McCullum said the housing authority committee discussed the Section 3 regulations with Carlson Construction in the meeting.

“From what we understand is that part of the complaints were not enough minorities are on the job,” McCullum said. “What we discussed is that there are minorities but not black minorities. There are Hispanic minorities on the site.”

injuries to the animal, he said.

Police spoke with Heriberto P. Chavez, 63, who reportedly acknowledged keeping the dog on a short leash and keeping it outside for “a period of time” without food, water or shelter, Gregory said.

Chavez was given a $300 ticket for animal cruelty and told to take the dog inside, Gregory said.

Semi crashes into viaduct near downtown Joliet

JOLIET – A semitrailer struck a railroad viaduct Tuesday near downtown Joliet.

The crash happened about 10:10 a.m. when a truck traveling north on Scott Street was unable to clear the viaduct near Ohio Street.

“The trailer hit the viaduct and caused significant structural damage,” Joliet Deputy Chief Ed Gregory said. No one was

injured.

Road traffic was being diverted from Scott Street to Chicago Street.

“The railroad has been contacted and will shut down rail traffic. We’ve been told it will take at least 25 hours for the inspection and any maintenance,” Gregory said.

JOLIET – A Will County judge on Tuesday found a Beecher man guilty on five counts of using a gun during a March 2015 racially charged confrontation.

Judge Dave Carlson did not find Jacob M. Slager, 21, guilty of committing a hate crime against the three victims, who are black. An attorney who is familiar Jacob M. with, but not involved Slager in, the case, said that unlike physical actions it is difficult to prove the mental state courts require for a hate crime conviction.

Carlson heard the case as a bench trial during the last week. Slager was found guilty on three counts of reckless discharge of a firearm and two counts of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and faces one to three years in prison when

he is sentenced in April. Slager, of the 30000 block of South Ashland Avenue, is eligible for probation, but also faces pending identity theft charges after an arrest by Joliet police and drug charges in Kankakee County.

Early on March 16, 2015, the victims – two brothers and a friend – were in front of their Beecher home when a red Jeep Wrangler occupied by Slager and a then17-year-old boy drove by, according to trial testimony. Slager shouted a racial epithet and fired a handgun several times before driving away. No one was injured.

After announcing his verdict, Carlson ordered Slager held without bond.

“Without getting into the rationale of why I found you guilty, I’m truly concerned if I were to release you at this stage of the proceedings,” the judge said.

“The evidence presented to me at trial shows this has been an ongoing situation [with the victims] and quite frankly, I don’t want to put anybody in a bad spot while you’re pending sentencing,” Carlson said.

JOLIET – A longtime assistant state’s attorney has been selected as Will County’s next associate judge.

Fred Harvey of Joliet was chosen by the circuit judges to replace recently retired judge Rick Mason, the Illinois Supreme Fred Harvey Court announced Friday. Harvey will “float” to cover assignments for other judges after he is sworn in later this month, Will County Chief Judge Richard Schoenstedt said.

“I have every confidence wherever I put him, he’ll do a great job,” Schoenstedt said. “Fred has ap-

peared in front of me many times.

He’s always been very professional, very prepared and I’m sure he’ll bring that to the bench.”

Harvey grew up near Detroit and applied to law school at the urging of his argumentative speech professor.

He came to the area when he was hired by the state’s attorney’s office in 1998 and has been the lead prosecutor for several murder trials.

“I’m looking forward to the challenge. I’m going to use my experience, [but] keep an open mind and treat everyone with fairness and respect,” Harvey said.

Harvey has four children ages 20 to 1. When not practicing law, he has acted in local theater productions and served as assistant speech team coach at Joliet Central High School.

mmallory@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced Tuesday in a news release that the full closure of the Brandon Road bridge over the Des Plaines River in Joliet is extended until Monday, March 20, weather permitting.

The structure that carries Brandon Road over the Des Plaines River was closed for repairs in December. It was slated to open Monday. The bridge closure is extended due to a delay in equipment, the news release stated.

Department of Transportation spokeswoman Gianna Urgo said bridges require specialized equipment that takes time to make, install and test.

“What we’ve ordered has to be fabricated,” she said.

Urgo said the equipment being worked on has always been required for the repairs, and the need for it wasn’t discovered in the last couple of weeks.

Donough Street bridge as an alternate route to cross the Des Plaines River.

Southbound Brandon Road traffic should travel north on Route 6, east on McDonough Street, south on Route 53 and west on Laraway Road to meet back with Brandon Road. Northbound Brandon Road traffic should take the reverse route.

Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through the area. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in work zones, obey posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment.

On a typical day, half of the people staffing the clinic are donating their time.

Dr. Diana Jaime has volunteered her services at the clinic for five years.

“I think it’s a moral responsibility to be involved in the community,” Jaime said. “We have patients who really appreciate us, because they don’t have what we have here at any other place.”

Patient Mariana Gutierrez of Joliet, speaking through an interpreter, said she appreciates the care she and her husband have received at the Will-Grundy Medical Clinic the past two years.

“They are preoccupied with the patients,” she said. “They’re always caring for them and their needs.”

Catherine Braun Holz, age 86, of Dallas, Texas, formerly Wilmington, passed away Saturday January 28, 2017 at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas.

Catherine Braun Holz was born Catherine Helen Braun in Aurora, Illinois on June 29, 1930. The treasured only child of Ruth Walsh Braun and Herbert John Braun, she attended Catholic grade school,

under the watchful eye of her mother and her adoring Auntie Helen Walsh Hawkinson, both teachers. She graduated from Aurora East High School in1948, and went on to complete a Bachelor of Science degree in education from the University of Illinois in Urbana. Always an honor student, Cathy was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority, officer in Panhellenic and active in many campus activities including Star Course. It was there, in the campus activities office at the Illini Union, that Catherine met the man of her dreams, Harold Arthur Holz, of Peotone, Illinois. Hal was at the U of I studying AG engineering on the GI bill. Soon after Cathy’s graduation in May, she and Hal married on August 9, 1952, at Holy Angels Catholic Church in Aurora. The newlyweds made their first home in Peotone, then moved to Wilmington, where they remained for nearly 60 years, until relocating to Dallas, Texas, for warmer weather and proximity to many of their 8 beloved grandchildren. 121 South Joliet Street became home base for the Holz family in 1955 when they purchased and lovingly restored the Pre Civil War property. Cathy and Hal raised their four children there, opening their home to countless friends, hosting family holiday celebrations, investing in the community of Wilmington, the school systems and their parish.

Cathy chose teaching as her profession, but after just two years teaching kindergarten students, she yearned to explore her more creative gifts. She attended the Chicago Art Institute and emerged a talented floral designer. Trained in global technique and design, Cathy loved both the art and the science of her new career as a floriculturist. She was an avid gardener, harvesting interesting plants from around the region and importing specimens from across the country, as evidenced by her prized hosta bed under the shade of the massive maple tree at 121. Cathy was active in the Wilmington Garden Club, elected for numerous leadership positions, including president.

She honed her craft, continuing her training, competing in Flower Show Competitions across the area, and eventually achieving credentials as a Jr. Flower Show Judge. After her children were through early education, she enjoyed a professional career as floral designer, working at Cinderella Flowers, Coal City, The Lemon Drop and finally the Flower Loft in Wilmington.

Cathy and Hal combined their considerable knowledge and passions for horticulture and design to transform the family home, into a Christmas Showcase, which was opened to the public on the Wilmington Garden Club Christmas Walk. One of their final projects as a couple was the support of Riley’s Garden, where they worked tirelessly to help install, water and nurture the young garden.

Cathy’s proudest achievement was her family. Her four children, eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild were the jewels in her crown. She invested deeply in her family, initially nurturing her children with her con-

The ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK – Caterpillar Inc. is moving its headquarters to the Chicago area and won’t build a new complex in its current Peoria location.

The move comes as the company faces a weak equipment market that has been cutting into its bottom line.

Last week, the farming and construction equipment maker reported a wider fourth-quarter loss on charges and higher restructuring costs. It has been cutting jobs and facilities over the last several years.

“As a result of continuing challenging market conditions and the need to prioritize resources to focus on growth, Caterpillar will not build the previously announced headquarters complex in Peoria,” the company said.

The company said it will locate a limited group of senior executives and support functions in the Chicago area later this year, saying it is

a more strategic location. It expects about 300 people to be based at the new location.

“Locating our headquarters closer to a global transportation hub, such as Chicago, means we can meet with our global customers, dealers and employees more easily and frequently,” CEO Jim Umpleby said.

Caterpillar said the vast majority of its people will remain in central Illinois. The current Caterpillar building in Peoria will continue to be used.

Caterpillar joins several other agriculture-focused businesses in the Midwest that have relocated to Chicago over the years.

Archer-Daniels-Midland Co. moved from its central Illinois base, in Decatur, in 2014. ConAgra moved to Chicago in 2016 after nearly a century in Omaha, Nebraska.

Boeing famously left its base in Seattle to move its corporate headquarters to Chicago nearly two decades ago.

The proposed legislation follows an investigation by the Chicago Tribune that exposed substandard living con-

ditions and widespread harm among such facilities. Illinois officials said the legislative measures are part of a continuing overhaul of the state’s fragmented and sprawling group home system that shelters over 12,000 adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The Illinois Department of Human Services has urged lawmakers to

shore up investigative shortcomings and eliminate a licensing loophole that surfaced late last year when state officials revoked Disability Services of Illinois’ license, citing “imminent risk” to residents.

The private network of group homes served 45 residents in Chicago and the south suburbs. The newspaper’s investigation spotlighted a ne-

glect case and serious problems at the business, which was called Southwest Disabilities Services & Supports until last year.

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump nominated Neil Gorsuch, a fast-rising conservative judge with a writer’s flair, to the Supreme Court on Tuesday night, setting up a fierce fight with Democrats over a jurist who could shape America’s legal landscape for decades to come.

At 49, Gorsuch is the youngest Supreme Court nominee in a quarter-century. He’s known on the Denver-based 10th Circuit Court of Appeals for clear, colloquial writing, advocacy for court review of government regulations, defense of religious freedom and skepticism toward law enforcement.

“Judge Gorsuch has outstanding legal skills, a brilliant mind, tremendous discipline and has earned bipartisan support,” Trump declared, announcing the nomination in his first televised prime-time address from the White House.

Gorsuch’s nomination was cheered by conservatives wary of Trump’s own fluid ideology.

If confirmed by the Senate, he will fill the seat left vacant by the death last year of Antonin Scalia, long the right’s most powerful voice on the high court.

With Scalia’s wife, Maureen, sitting in the audience, Trump took care to praise the late justice. Gorsuch followed, calling Scalia a “lion of the law.”

Gorsuch thanked Trump for entrusting him with “a most solemn assignment.” Outlining his legal philosophy, he said: “It is the rule of judges to apply, not alter, the work of the peo-

ple’s representatives. A judge who likes every outcome he reaches is very likely a bad judge.”

Some Democrats, still smarting over Trump’s unexpected victory in the presidential election, have vowed to mount a vigorous challenge to nearly any nominee to what they view as the court’s “stolen seat.” President Barack Obama nominated U.S. Circuit Court Judge Merrick Garland for the vacancy after Scalia’s death, but Senate Republicans refused to consider the pick, saying the seat should be filled only after the November election.

Senate Democratic leader Charles Schumer said he has “serious doubts” that Gorsuch is within what Democrats consider the legal mainstream, saying he “hewed to an ideological approach to jurisprudence that makes me skeptical that he can be a strong, independent justice on the court.”

Trump’s choice of Gorsuch marks perhaps the most significant decision of his young presidency, one with ramifications that could last long after he leaves office. After a reality TV buildup to Tuesday’s announcement – including a senior Trump adviser saying more than one court candidate was heading to Washington ahead of the event – the reveal was drama free.

For some Republicans, the prospect of filling one or more Supreme Court seats over the next four years has helped ease their concerns about Trump’s experience and temperament. Three justices are in their late 70s and early 80s, and a retirement would offer Trump the opportunity to cement conservative dominance of the court for many years.

Madigan’s legal filing long overdue Question the timing all you want, but last week’s legal filing by Attorney General Lisa Madigan to stop paying state employee wages without an official appropriation is long overdue and is completely consistent with a 2016 Illinois Supreme Court ruling and with her (and the governor’s) opposition to a similar lawsuit brought by social service providers.

Back in 2015, after the General Assembly and the governor couldn’t come to terms on a budget deal, AFSCME and other unions went to court and asked a judge to force the state to pay state workers even though there was no official appropriation for the salaries. That ruling remains in place today.

But this passage in the Illinois Constitution pretty much says it all: “The General Assembly by law shall make appropriations for all expenditures of public funds by the State.”

So the Illinois Supreme Court ruled in March 2016 on a different case the portion of AFSCME’s contract with the state requiring payment of back wages could not be honored without a proper legislative appropriation. In other words, no appropriation, no payment, even with a contract.

It was a completely reasonable decision. The governor shouldn’t be able to sign contracts and then force

VIEWS Rich Miller state payment without an actual appropriation. The potential for abuse is mind blowing. Just imagine if Rod Blagojevich could’ve paid whomever he wanted, however much he wanted without any legislative permission.

Gov. Bruce Rauner’s position against a lawsuit brought by human service providers also is completely in line with that 2016 Supreme Court decision. The service providers say their signed state contracts mean they should be paid in full even though the General Assembly hasn’t approved the appropriations to do so. Never once has Gov. Rauner said those providers ought to be paid without a formal budget in place.

But there he was last week saying Attorney General Madigan’s motion would “directly harm” state workers while urging her to drop her legal motion. He’s been fighting the state employee unions since Day 1 and has said he wants to help social service groups, yet he wants state workers paid without an appropriation but doesn’t want social service providers paid the same way?

C’mon, man. I was born at night,

but not last night. What’s he really up to? Give me a minute, and I’ll get to it.

House Republican Leader Jim Durkin’s reaction to AG Madigan’s move appeared to fly in the face of common sense: “This decision clearly undermines the legislature’s duty to negotiate a bipartisan solution.”

I was in Decatur to give a speech last week about the prospects for the Senate’s much-touted “grand bargain” when I found out about AG Madigan’s motion. My speech, as initially written, gave that bipartisan effort no better than a 50-50 chance to spur a final deal.

If the attorney general had filed her motion last year after the Supreme Court ruling, we wouldn’t be in this mess today, and Durkin most certainly knows it. Nothing focuses the General Assembly’s bipartisan attention quite so much as a massive crisis.

So why didn’t she file it last year?

I’m told she wanted to give the General Assembly and the governor some time to work things out. They eventually agreed to a stopgap budget, so she laid low. But that stopgap budget expired at the end of December, and the General Assembly left town last week without making significant progress.

There naturally will be widespread suspicions that AG Madigan

acted on behalf of her father. The Illinois Republican Party explicitly made that very point when it claimed the attorney general “decided to put Speaker Madigan’s power politics ahead of hard-working families in an effort to shut down state government.”

That last sentence is the key here.

The governor has done all he could to avoid a shutdown because a shutdown means all the emphasis then would be on quickly passing a real budget and the tax hikes that go along with it to reopen the government’s shuttered doors.

And that means the governor will lose much (or most, or possibly even all) of his beloved “leverage” to force through his various anti-union/ pro-business economic reforms. And that leverage, whether he admits it or not, is the extreme pressure that’s been put on social service providers and the people they serve since this impasse began 18 long months ago.

The attorney general has asked the judge to allow the governor and the General Assembly to delay any order until Feb. 28 to give them time to work out a deal.

Get on it, folks.

Replace torn POW/MIA flag at Route 6 and Gouger Road

To the Editor: At the intersection of Route 6 and Gouger Road is a wall designating entering the city of Joliet. At that wall are three flagpoles with the American flag, POW/MIA flag and the city of Joliet flag.

On my daily travels to Silver Cross Hospital, I pass through this intersection. Months ago, the American flag was removed because of being torn. The

POW/MIA flag has been torn in half with the remaining half damaged also, which has been flying in this condition now for weeks.

I find this very disrespectful to our veterans who have given their lives for their country.

I don’t know who will be responsible for taking down the flags when they are not in proper condition to be flown, but I feel that this needs to be addressed as soon as possible.

Knights hold off Warriors; teams split season series

cherron@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Lincoln-Way Central’s boys basketball team has struggled to close out games this season and found itself again holding the lead Tuesday in the fourth quarter.

But after letting their initial meeting with Lincoln-Way West slip away in the late stages, the Knights were determined not to let that happen again in the rematch with their rivals.

Central saw a 10-point fourth-quarter lead cut to one point, but responded by holding off the host Warriors to claim a 63-56 SouthWest Suburban Conference Red Division win.

Aaron Michalak led the Knights with 17 points, while Brian Ponton added 11 points and Chris Robinson contributed 10 points. That helped to offset a 38-point, 12-rebound effort from West’s Marco Pettinato.

That was the second game of a varsity doubleheader. In the opener, West’s girls team saw its hopes of competing for the conference title dashed as Bradley-Bourbonnais stayed perfect in the league by capturing a 67-46 victory.

On Dec. 6, West staged a big late rally to claim a 68-66 victory at Central. It looked as if the same thing might happen again, but the Knights (6-14, 4-3) finished with a 10-4 run to even things with the Warriors (5-14, 3-4), who also got nine points from Nolan Green.

“We’ve blown a lot of leads this year,” Knights coach Bob Curran said, “so when they cut it to 53-52, I called

Central still was up 35-31 heading into the last quarter and still led 53-43 with 3:50 left before the Warriors went on a 9-0 run to pull to within one with 2:50 left. But Michalak hit two free throws and then hit a layup with 1:50 to go to make it 57-52, and the Knights wrapped things up by making six free throws in the final 41 seconds.

“We executed the game plan pretty good,” Michalak said. “We knew that Marco was going to get his, and he had obviously had a good game. It was probably one of our best wins of the year. We made free throws, which we’ve struggled with, but tonight they helped us a lot.

“We felt like we let the first game slip away and should have beat them, so if we played well and hard that we’d get them this time around. The West vs.

Central games have been the most fun ones that I’ve played in. We look forward to it and the gym was loud, which made it a lot of fun.”

While pleased to see his team battle back, Warriors coach Brian Flaherty lamented the critical turnovers that they committed which put them in that position.

“We turned the ball over too much, and we weren’t very confident in handling it,” Flaherty said. “It ended up with us not being able to stay in offense the way that we wanted to and playing our usual long possessions. And that’s a credit to how they came at us defensively.

“It’s not really typical of us to get up and down the way we did and shoot as quickly as we did at the beginning of the game. But part of that was that we had the inability to stay in the offense, so we were taking what was given to us and had some quick and ill-advised shots.”

In the girls game, the Warriors (21-5, 8-2) trailed 9-6 after one quarter, but the Boilermakers (23-2, 11-0) took control by outscoring them 24-9 in the second period to grab a 33-15 advantage at the break.

Murphy spins tales of life in baseball VIEWS Dick Goss In the previous column covering Pat Murphy’s visit to Joliet as the guest speaker for the Old Timers Baseball Association of Will County banquet, the Milwaukee Brewers bench coach under manager Craig Counsell discussed his college coaching career at Notre Dame and Arizona State.

Here, he relates some of his experiences, with a humorous slant, in professional baseball.

Murphy began his pro career making $32,000 as the manager of the San Diego Padres’ Class A Short-Season affiliate.

A left-handed batter pulled a double into the right-field corner that could have won the game for the opposition.

Murphy’s right fielder raced to the bullpen, which was down the line, picked up a ball and fired a strike, throwing out the potential winning run at the plate. It wasn’t the ball that was hit, however. That was 40 feet farther down into the corner. But there were only two umpires, and they didn’t see what the right fielder pulled.

JOLIET – Joliet Central boys basketball coach Lawrence Thompson Jr. probably thought he was dreaming.

“This was way different,” Thompson said after his Steelmen knocked off his former team – visiting Lockport – 45-34, in Tuesday night’s nonconference matchup. “I never thought this would happen in my career. It was a unique opportunity.”

Thompson coached in the Lockport program for 33 years, 16 as the head coach. He was the sophomore coach at Joliet West last season and is in his first season leading the Central program.

“I’m just happy to see Brett [Hespell, the Lockport coach] doing a great job with that program, which you knew he would,” Thompson said. “His kids play hard. They compete.

“When Joe [Gura] left and turned the Lockport program over to me, he said everyone who coached there was prepared to lead that prestigious program. He said I was, and I knew Brett was when he took over.”

Central (18-3) not only boasts an outstanding record, but the Steelmen scored on their first four possessions and led 9-0 with 5 minutes, 51 seconds left in the first quarter. But the Porters (10-11) had no intention of going away.

“They are gritty,” Steelmen senior guard Jose Grubbs said. “They play until the bitter end.”

“They are hard-nosed,” Thompson said. “That’s the nature of the kids they get. My guys still have to get used to that situation.”

Lockport battled back within 14-8 after one quarter but scored only five points on 2-of-8 shooting in the second quarter to fall behind 24-13 at the half.

It was a 25-17 game early in the third quarter when the Steelmen turned successive turnovers into a Cameron Blackmon layup and a Grubbs dunk that made it 29-17. The Porters committed 22 turnovers in all.

“We have to be able to score,” Hespell said. “Defensively we played OK, but this [lack of offense] has been the case four games in a row.

Porters senior guard Matt Smietanski scored 11 of his 15 points in

the third quarter as Lockport crawled back within 32-26. Blackmon hit two free throws to end the quarter with Central up 34-26.

Patrick Cooper and Chase Travis both made two free throws as the Porters got to within 34-30 with 3:46 left.

But after not scoring for the first five minutes of the fourth quarter, the Steelmen used strong defense and big plays from Grubbs, Jason Bingham, Blackmon and Ryan King down the stretch to clinch it.

“It was great to go against them, the old-school rivalry,” Blackmon said. “We came out hot, then we had to change things up. We were used to playing a man-to-man offense all year.

“That’s the third game in a row where we faced some sort of zone,” Thompson said. “We have to fight through games of this sort.”

shots from 3-point range in the first half.

Travis had six points and 10 boards for Lockport, helping the Porters to a 34-15 rebounding advantage. However, a 22-8 turnover differential was telling.

“This was a team when you saw them on the schedule, you got excited,” Grubbs said of Lockport. “But you knew it was going to be a long night.

We believe we can beat anyone in the state, but we knew they would hang tough.

“We got a lot of stops in the fourth quarter. We knew [Smietanski] was their main guy and he would get his shots eventually [which happened in the third quarter]. But we took the drive to the basket away from him in the fourth quarter.”

Hespell complimented Thompson’s team, and added things will not get easier for the Porters.

“They [Steelmen] are very, very good,” he said. “And now we have Bolingbrook and H-F coming up. We have to get better.”

The Associated Press A string of emails that began in 2010 with the Atlanta Falcons head trainer and reached all the way to owner Arthur Blank showed a franchise worried about its “excessive” reliance on painkillers to treat players and the potential embarrassment that could cause the team and the NFL. “That’s being litigated now. That’s not something we’re going discuss right now,” Dimitroff said Monday night when asked about the emails. “When the time is right, we’ll readdress that.”

The email chain was presented to the court as an example of thousands of similar documents gathered during discovery that the ex-players’ lawyers want entered into the record. It was coincidental that the Falcons’ chain was released before the Super Bowl.

Lauzon was not with the team at the time of the critical review. He became the Falcons’ head trainer in January 2010 and serves as the team’s director of

sports medicine and performance.

He first wrote to Dimitroff in May 2010 to note the conclusions contained in the review by SportPharm, an outside agency brought in by the NFL to look at how teams purchased, dispensed and tracked medications, including powerful painkillers and prescription drugs.

Among the problems Lauzon highlighted from SportPharm’s review was the Falcons’ “excessive dispensation” of narcotics and other medications, which risked creating a “culture of dependency.”

“Within the first days on the job, I was informed that we barely missed a DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency) investigation because of improper billing issues,” Lauzon also told Dimitroff.

One of the central contentions of the painkiller lawsuit is that teams did not properly keep records about prescriptions and which players were getting drugs.

Dimitroff forwarded the email to the owner only hours later.

“I thought it quite important for you to be aware of a rather sensitive subject and one we need to discuss before we include others on this topic matter,” Dimitroff wrote to Blank.

“Agree – we should talk about this together with Rich (McKay, the Falcons’ president),” Blank replied.

It’s not clear what practices were changed as part of the discussion, and there is no evidence the Falcons violated league rules. What’s clear is that Lauzon was warning team executives that practices uncovered during the review could embarrass the team and raise compliance issues with the league.

Patriots owner pulls some punches, throws others

The Associated Press HOUSTON – Robert Kraft is pulling his punches over “Deflategate.”

Well, some of them.

While the New England Patriots owner and once close confidant of NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell wants to celebrate yet another trip to the Super Bowl this week, he also couldn’t back down from a challenge Monday night to address the whole mess. So Kraft took a couple of shots during the Patriots’ availability, yet also made sure not to temper the festive mood.

“Everybody wants to protect their family,” Kraft said when asked about the aftermath of the deflated footballs

case from the 2014 AFC championship game that resulted in Tom Brady’s four-game suspension, a $1 million fine for the franchise and the loss of its first-round draft pick in 2016.

“I think our family was involved, or accused of being involved, in something that was mishandled and became inappropriate. Sometimes in a complicated situation in business, people start pointing fingers, and we want to assure everyone that we are together.”

Kraft then cited a Hebrew saying from the Old Testament.

“When tough times come,” he translated, “there’s nothing bad that happens that doesn’t have good associated with it.

“In a way, that galvanized our

team.”

Sure looks that way considering the Patriots (16-2) had the NFL’s best record this season, eased to the conference title with lopsided wins over Houston and Pittsburgh and are threepoint favorites for Sunday’s Super Bowl against Atlanta (13-5).

After the home victory over the Steelers, Kraft accepted the Lamar Hunt Trophy – no, Goodell was not on hand to present it – and made a not-tooveiled reference to “Deflategate.”

“For a number of reasons, all of you in this stadium understand how big this win was,” Kraft said. “And we have to go to Houston and win one more.”

He’s in Houston with his team now,

and Kraft tried to stick to the business at hand, not carrying out any vendetta.

“I feel privileged to be here in the Super Bowl city,” he said. “There’s a time and a place to talk about problems. I’m going to stay focused on being here.”

Kraft is such a veteran of Super Bowls, having also been to one in 1997 with Bill Parcells as his coach, that he gets calls from other owners about how to handle the week. So it was no surprise when he revealed that Falcons boss Arthur Blank called him.

“Arthur asked me for some advice about being in (the Super Bowl),” Kraft said. “I told him, ‘Don’t let anyone ruin these two weeks for you. Focus on how lucky we are to be here.’ ”

No. 10 Wisconsin routs Illini The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHAMPAIGN – Ethan Happ scored 14 points and led the way in No. 10 Wisconsin’s 57-43 rout over Illinois on Tuesday night.

Wisconsin (19-3, 8-1 Big Ten) started the game with a 16-2 run and never trailed.

Much of the hot start came from the open 3-pointers Illinois allowed Wisconsin’s players to take – the Badgers shot 7 of 23 from 3-point range in the game.

The Badgers big men dominated the game in the post, out-rebounding Illinois 45-36, including 19-6 on the offensive boards.

Nigel Hayes scored 11 points and added eight rebounds for Wisconsin.

Malcolm Hill and Maverick Morgan both had 10 points for Illinois (13-10, 3-7).

The Illini looked overmatched as they have for much of the season against good opponents, but they came back and closed Wisconsin’s lead down to as much as six points before falling short. Illinois shot 28 percent from the field and 5 of 21 from beyond the arc.

Iowa 83, Rutgers 63: At Piscataway, New Jersey, Jordan Bohannon scored

17 points and Iowa took command early and posted its first road win of the season. The win was the second straight for the Hawkeyes (13-10, 5-5 Big Ten) with conference-leading scorer Peter Jok sidelined with a back injury.

This one was a laugher for Iowa, which had lost its first five games away from Carver-Hawkeye Arena. It opened a double-digit lead in the opening five minutes and never looked back, leading by as many as 28 points.

No. 17 Maryland 77, Ohio State 71: At Columbus, Ohio, Justin Jackson had 22 points and 12 rebounds as No. 17 Maryland held off Ohio State down the stretch.

The Buckeyes pulled within one point four times in the second half, but the Terps always had an answer.

A jumper by Melo Trimble with 32 seconds left put Maryland up 75-71, and Jared Nickens hit two free throws with 14 seconds left to seal it.

Trimble had 13 points and Anthony Cowan added 11 as Maryland (20-2, 8-1 Big Ten) won its seventh straight. The Terps haven’t lost since Jan. 1 and have won all six of their games on the road this season.

Sovereign offers sophisticated menu

By MYSTERY DINER PLAINFIELD – When a restaurant advertises itself as farm to fork, the food expectations are going to be high.

So, despite the appealing food photos on its website, I entered Sovereign skeptical it could live up to the expectations.

The building, which appears a lot like a repurposed home in Plainfield’s downtown on Lockport Street, had decor that showed the restaurant’s taste, a trendy craft beer-serving restaurant that doesn’t want to be confused with a bar.

You’ll find boards on the wall with craft beer labels, candles on the table and lights affixed high on the wall to give a moody but not too dark feel.

Upon arriving, I was immediately seated and handed the simple one-sheet menu. In fact, the beer menu (two sheets) was more complicated.

But that doesn’t mean the food, locally sourced, isn’t complicated.

It’s clear a ton of time was put into the creations. You could go after anything from arctic char to chorizo seitan, two items I couldn’t locate or explain to you if I tried. Or there’s a grilled rib eye, pork tenderloin and Amish chicken breast.

Some restaurants add complicated words and combinations to their menu to make it feel sophisticated. At Sovereign, however, it’s clear the words are heartfelt, necessary and real.

So while I oversimplified the names and descriptions, which actually are things such as “Not your butcher’s enchiladas,” be careful to read and understand what you’re about to take part in.

My choice was the “Dig on Swine,” which is described as an eight-hour braised bone-in pork shank, sweet potato puree, sauteed kale and mustard demi.

I don’t often go after kale with my dinners, but this was well worth it.

I sat back and, after weaving my way through the beer menu, decided to try the Hailstorm 2015 Bourbon Barrel Aged Vlad the Conquistador. Yes, it’s a complicated name, but Vlad held his own among the bourbon barrel beer elite out there right now.

Some are smoother, but Vlad packs a warm punch with 11 different malts.

Not surprisingly, it’s brewed with ancho, guajillo and chipotle pepper, but its main influence is the Mexican cinnamon, cocoa and dark amber agave

When the main course arrived, I looked for a knife.

But I soon realized I wouldn’t need one at all as the tender pork fell easily off the bone.

Clearly, someone in the kitchen knows the secret to pleasing taste buds way better than I do because the combination of pork, sweet potato, kale and sauce worked together perfectly as what amounted to be the best meal I’ve eaten in a while.

It’s one that I will certainly remember, along with the attentiveness of the waitstaff, which brought a full carafe of water immediately upon my being seated and was friendly but not intrusive throughout the meal.

I left with the feeling that I was important to them and not just a table to fill and clear.

This is definitely a restaurant I’ll return to because of the varied options, which included four salads, two sandwiches and a Sovereign burger made of their ground brisket and bacon patties on brioche, would allow you to return and have a completely different and yet satisfying dinner (or lunch) experience again.

ASK THE DOCTORS Robert Ashley those who were most optimistic had a 26 percent decrease in the death rate over the study period compared to those who were the least optimistic. This was after adjusting for depression, because some people who aren’t optimistic actually might be depressed. The decrease in death rates was seen for deaths caused by cancer, strokes, heart attacks and infections.

One problem with the study is women who were the most optimistic had lower smoking rates, were more physically active, had more education and were more likely to be married. Each of these factors is associated with greater longevity. The authors say they adjusted for these factors, but fully adjusting for them is difficult. Another problem with the study is the study might not reflect correlations within the general population, in that 97 percent of the women identified themselves as white.

Overall, the study found what appears to be a correlation between optimism and a better cholesterol level, higher blood levels of antioxidants and improvements in one’s immune system.

My own feeling is optimism is less about sunniness than about hopefulness. This hopefulness helps people get through the bad times, because they realize good times are ahead. And, overall, such people seem to have healthier habits that can help lead to greater longevity.

Dear Doctor: Does outlook really matter when it comes to lifespan, as a recent study suggested?

Dear Reader: In my own experience, I’ve seen pessimistic, unhappy people lead very long lives, and I’ve seen optimistic people’s lives cut short by illness. That doesn’t mean, in the aggregate, optimism has no effect on lifespan.

Specific studies have looked for correlations between an optimistic outlook and cardiovascular disease, finding mortality benefits among those who had a more optimistic attitude. These studies used different scales to judge a person’s level of optimism, with one common approach using a questionnaire about a person’s approach to life. Some, for example, asked people to respond in either agreement or disagreement to statements such as, “Overall, I expect more good things to happen than bad.”

A combined evaluation of many studies assessing the connection between optimism and physical health was reported in the Annals of Behavioral Medicine in 2009.

Researchers measured physical health outcomes by rates of cancer, heart disease, infection rates, pain, diabetes and kidney failure. In the combined evaluation, the authors found a small correlation between better physical health and optimism, and an even smaller correlation between lower death rates and optimism.

A more recent study published in 2016 in the American Journal of Epidemiology followed 70,000 nurses and judged levels of optimism by how they responded to a questionnaire called the Life Orientation test. The women responded to 10 different statements such as, “In uncertain times, I usually expect the best” and “I rarely count on good things happening to me.”

The researchers ranked women into four quartiles, from lowest to highest, and found

First, what was the perfect defense found by East-West against five hearts doubled?

The bidding was interesting. East had a really powerful hand if partner had some fit. After its one-spade opening and South’s two-heart overcall, West dredged up a raise because of the four trumps. (Nonvulnerable, it might have bid a pre-emptive three spades, which probably would have silenced North.) Now North nudged her partner with some heart support, a singleton and a potential source of tricks. Then East might have rebid four diamonds to show the second suit and express some slam interest.

When East bid four spades, though, South took an each-way bet. If four spades was failing, maybe five hearts would make; if four spades was laydown, probably five hearts would be a cheap save.

Somehow, Robot West found a low-diamond lead. East won with the ace and shifted to its singleton club.

Declarer won on the board and led the heart jack, feigning a finesse, but East did not fall for it. The Robot won with its ace and shifted to the spade two! West won with the jack and gave partner a club ruff for down two and the best result possible.
