People hate Donald Trump. People hate the media. The media hates Donald Trump.

None of those things will make America great again, nor are they particularly fascinating. The least important of them is Trump’s relationship with the national press. In the hierarchy of national significance, it’s Tom vs. Jerry, Roadrunner vs. Wile E. Coyote, and with apologies to Vladimir Putin, Boris Badenov vs. Moose and Squirrel.

While we in the media love to make fun of Donald Trump’s need to be loved, we also need to look in the mirror and question why we’re obsessed with why he hates us. Who cares? It’s boring, it’s tedious, and it’s a waste of both ink and air time. Like all national politicians since the dawn of the TV age, Donald Trump will use the media to his advantage. He’s found a new way to do it and launched what was, without question, the most successful reality TV show in history. The manner in which he did it won him a presidency, and he doesn’t see any good reason to stop now.

We take the bait every time. We are losing and continue to lose this game, but

we keep playing it, perhaps partially because we are under the impression that what the president says is important.

This is a different kind of president.

Sometimes what he says is important, but much of what he says is ridiculous, and we’re going to have to be much more discerning about that. These are convenient distractions. What he does is what’s important.

We can’t help ourselves from pointing in shock and laughing at foolish statements about inauguration crowd sizes, fraudulent votes and “alternative facts.”

It’s easy fodder for cable news stations, but it takes away time from reporting the important news of what the Trump administration is actually doing on a daily basis.

Granted, these are strange times, but I’m not sure what’s so new about politicians hating the media, and I’m puzzled why we care so much. What I can tell you

is that it’s only reinforcing the negative opinions of people whose trust we need to regain.

The details of this anecdote are unimportant, but I’ll share it to make a point.

Many years ago when I was a reporter, I was writing several unflattering stories about an incumbent political candidate while covering a beat that required some cooperation from his administration to cover it effectively.

It wasn’t easy, but the unflattering stories were accurate and important, as was covering the news of the day. The candidate in question even called a news conference one evening, which was attended by several Chicago media outlets, essentially to yell at me for my “irresponsible” reporting.

We all walked out of that “news” conference in a collective shrug as to what the story was. We didn’t make a big deal about the rant. We didn’t really care. He was upset because the stories were putting his candidacy in jeopardy.

My feelings weren’t hurt. I didn’t have feelings and wasn’t looking for validation or a hug.

Joliet catch-up plan leads to two water bills in January

The city has been billing on shorter cycles for the past few months to make up the difference from the breakdown that ran from late July to late September.

“It’s been going on for quite a while,” Ghedotte said. “It goes back to July 25 when we went to the new computer system. From July 25 to Sept. 27, no one received any bill at all.”

Billing will be back to normal by March, he said. But through early February, water customers will continue to receive monthly bills on shortened cycles.

‘IT VARIES’ Flu season has been average so far in Will County

So far, it has been an average year in Will County, local doctors say.

“It hasn’t been a bad season,” said Dr. Atul Gupta of Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet. “The last four weeks there’s really been an increase in flu activity, but it’s still not as high as we’ve had in previous years. There wasn’t much last year, but prior to that, we saw higher levels of the flu.”

No two years of flu season are the same.

“It varies,” Gupta said. “It depends what’s circulating.”

Gupta said many factors determine what type of flu is in an area. The exact timing and duration of flu seasons can vary, Patel said, but influenza activity often begins to increase in October.

Most of the time, flu activity peaks between December and February, although activity can last as late as May, Patel said.

“There’s been years where there hasn’t been much activity until March,” Gupta said. “Some years it peaks in December then comes back a second time in March.”

Patel said keeping track of flu season progress is important in the medical field in order to see how the flu itself matches up with components of the current season’s flu vaccine.

The makeup of the 70 million to 75 million doses of flu vaccine administered annually in the U.S. is determined after the previous flu season. The vaccine takes six to nine months to produce.

“The vaccine they have is based on how the previous flu season ended, and what may be happening in other parts of the world,” Patel said.

Patel said doctors and pharmacists are ready to give flu shots in September. Flu season is during the winter months in North America, and the cold does play a role in the prevalence of the flu.

“Viruses like it when people are indoors and spending time together,” Gupta said. “So when a bunch of people are inside together, there’s a likelihood of it spreading.”

Gupta said the end of January is not too late to get a flu shot, although it takes two or three weeks to be effective. Even after that, flu season is not over for another one to three months.

Area congressmen react to Trump’s travel ban

mmallory@shawmedia.com JOLIET – An executive order issued Friday by President Donald Trump drew protesters to airports across the United States after it became known that many travelers with ties to Middle Eastern countries were being detained.

The executive order temporarily suspends immigration from seven Muslim-majority countries and the United States’ broader refugee program, and indefinitely bans refugees from war-torn Syria.

U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, D-Naperville, said there has been a huge amount of concern that “something like this” might happen since Trump won the election.

Foster said he has not yet heard from constituents who have felt the effect of the ban at airports, but his offices in Joliet, Aurora and Washington, D.C., are ready and willing to hear constituent concerns.

“Everyone in my office knows that treating people fairly, particularly when they’re new to our country, is one of our highest priorities,” Foster said.

Foster said scientists at Argonne National Laboratory in Lemont and other laboratories have come to him out of concern in recent months. Some have green cards, some don’t, and some were born and raised in the United States.

Foster said it would be “extremely hard” to recruit top scientists to the United States if the ban continues. He said more than 12,000 scientists have signed a petition against it.

Legislation to do so was to be introduced Monday, and Foster said he hopes there is Republican support for it.

Foster and other congressional Democrats gathered Monday evening at the U.S. Supreme Court to protest the executive order.

U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski, D-Western Springs, also said his offices are open to assist. He has a staffer dedicated to helping constituents with immigration issues. As of Monday afternoon, no one had approached the office with personal experiences related to the president’s executive order.

“President Trump’s immigration executive order is ill conceived and harmful to innocent individuals, especially refugees fleeing persecution,” Lipinski said in a statement. “While we need policies to keep us safe, this hurts many Muslims whose help we need to fight terrorism.”

Area Republicans were also not completely on board with Trump’s latest controversial decision.

U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Channahon, was a co-author of a bipartisan letter to Trump in support of the request by Secretary of Defense James Mattis to exempt Iraqis who served alongside U.S. military.

Kinzinger stated in a post on the publishing platform Medium.com, “We are in a generational fight against radical Islamist terrorism. Winning the war on terror cannot be done by America alone. We must be joined by allies in the Muslim world, and with the support of other freedom-loving nations.”

“Reports of green card holders and those who assisted us in the war on terror being denied or delayed entry is deeply concerning. Such detention is unacceptable and must be remedied immediately,” Kinzinger stated.

U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Campton Hills, said in a statement that Trump’s executive order is “overly broad and its interpretation has been inconsistent and confused. This has led to unintended consequences, like the barring of legal permanent residents and the rejection of Syrian Christians at the airport, a religious minority that was supposed to be protected by the executive order.”

Joliet Park District inks deal with ATI Physical Therapy

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – ATI Physical Therapy will pay $80,000 a year for five years under a naming rights agreement signed at a ceremony Saturday at the Inwood Athletic Club.

The Joliet Park District board approved the agreement last week.

The club is now officially Inwood Athletic Club Powered by ATI Physical Therapy.

Bolingbrook-based ATI, which has 600 clinics in 24 states, replaces Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center as sponsor of the Inwood Athletic Club.

The fitness center becomes the second Joliet Park District facility sponsored by ATI, which also has naming rights at Memorial Stadium, located across the parking lot from the Inwood Athletic Club.

“We worked it out so that both contracts are contiguous,” park district Executive Director Tom Carstens said.

The new name was unveiled Saturday at an event that featured an appearance by Chicago Cubs catcher Willson Contreras. More than 300 people attended, Carstens said.

The ATI name has not been posted yet on the building exterior but will be soon, he said.

ATI signage “has already started going up in some areas. We expect all the signage to be up in two weeks,” Carstens said.

The Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center name was removed at the end of 2016, the last year of a 10-year naming rights agreement at $100,000 a year.

The park district had talked with Presence about renewing the agreement before deciding in June to negotiate a contract with ATI.

Inwood security

The park board last week also approved two contracts with Tyco Integrated Security to install security cam-

eras at the Inwood multipurpose center and maintenance shop. The contracts total $47,000.

The park board in November approved a $130,500 contract with Tyco to add security cameras at the athletic club, ice arena and parking lot at Inwood.

Carstens said the money is part of $500,000 in security funding planned in the $19.5 million tax referendum approved by voters in 2014.

Next, Carstens said, the park district will add security cameras at the Hartman Recreation Center and Pilcher Park Nature Center. Also, security gates will be installed at Pilcher Park.

Lewis professor fatally shot in Naperville

bstanley@shawmedia.com NAPERVILLE – A Lewis University professor was fatally shot Friday in a middle school parking lot.

According to a news release from Naperville police, officers were called at 7:19 p.m. after Matthew Lange, 37, of Oswego, was found in a vehicle with the windows broken out at Thomas Scullen Middle School, 2815 Mistflower Lane, Naperville.

Lange was taken to Edward Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The DuPage County Coroner’s Office reported Lange died of multiple gunshot wounds.

According to the police news release, the incident did not involve Scullen Middle School.

Scullen Principal Jim Seput said in a statement that two outside organizations had rented building space for activities Friday evening, and one after-school club had activities that afternoon.

Lange was an assistant psychology professor at Lewis University’s

main campus in Romeoville. According to the school’s website, Lange attended Aurora and Benedictine universities before receiving his doctorate from Northern Illinois University in 2015.

Lewis spokesman Raymond Kennelly said Lange joined the faculty in 2013 and taught undergraduate and evening education courses – including personality and adult development.

“On behalf of Lewis University, I wish to extend our deepest sympathy and prayerful consolation to the family and friends of Matthew Lange,” University President David Livingston stated Sunday on Twitter.

The investigation is ongoing and does not appear to be a random act, according to Naperville police, meaning there is no apparent threat to the public.

LOCAL BRIEFS Police: Joliet man arrested on gun charges for third time

JOLIET – A 25-year-old Joliet man was arrested Friday after reportedly being caught with a gun for the third time.

Joliet Deputy Chief Ed Gregory said tactical officers stopped a car about 8:30 p.m. at Center and Morgan streets after the driver committed a traffic violation.

“The driver, a 26-year-old man, is on mandatory supervised release [parole] and can be searched anytime as a condition.

Officers also asked the passenger to get out so they could search the vehicle,” Gregory said.

But the passenger, An- Anthony thony J. Horton, allegedly J. Horton ran from the car and led a brief foot chase before he was tackled to the ground, Gregory said. “[Police] found a loaded semi-automatic handgun in his right pant leg,” Gregory said.

Horton, of the 2300 block of Center Street, was charged with resisting arrest and being an armed habitual criminal – a

Class X felony that carries a six- to 30year prison sentence.

According to Will County court records, Horton was convicted of unauthorized possession of a firearm after arrests by Joliet police in 2009 and Will County sheriff’s police in 2014.

Joliet police: Lockport mom left kid in car to play video gambling

JOLIET – Police say a Lockport woman left her 12-year-old son in a car Friday night while she went to play video gambling machines.

Joliet Deputy Chief Ed Gregory said that at 8:49 p.m. a patrol officer went to Betty’s Bistro, 3068 Caton Farm Road, and found the boy unattended in a white 2007 Dodge Durango.

“The officer spoke with the boy and learned his mother had gone inside,” Gregory said.

Tracy E. Fotsis, 35, was gambling at one of the video machines, according to police reports.

Fotsis was charged with leaving a child unattended in a motor vehicle and issued a compliance ticket.

JOLIET – Several school districts recently participated in a conference that showcased digital learning experiences offered to students.

Taking part in the K-12 DeICE Winter Mini Conference were Joliet Township High School District 204, Troy School District 30-C, Elwood School District 203, Rockdale School District 84 and Joliet Public Schools District 86.

“It was very nice to learn from teachers in the community,” said Erin Benaitis, a District 86 instructional technology coach.

Benaitis was one of many educators at the conference held Jan. 21 at the University of St. Francis in Joliet.

She worked with students on a narrated PowerPoint presentation and with a teacher on another presentation – called 50 Tools in 50 Minutes – about technology that can be integrated into the classroom.

Other topics covered in the conference included Google apps for education, digital portfolios with Seesaw, 3-D printing, the video game Minecraft, coding, digital citizenship and virtual field trips.

Another topic local educators learned about was flipped learning, a

technique in which teachers create or curate digital media for students to use at home so class time can be used for other activities, according to the Illinois Flipped & Blended Learning Network.

The Joliet Technology Showcase Poster Session at the conference highlighted 18 kindergarten through 12thgrade classrooms, six of which were from the Joliet high schools, according to a District 204 news release.

Joliet area students and teachers shared their digital learning experiences that align with local curriculum, instruction and assessment.

Some of the topics District 204 presented on included redefining presentations with Screencast-o-Matic, high school math with OneNote technology, blended physical education with Fitbit, rubberband car redesign and Edmodo Pen Pals.

District officials stated they were proud of the teachers and students for their presentations on digital learning. “[District 204] believes that the integration of technology is essential to motivating and engaging students in rigorous and relevant lessons and opens the doors to the critical thinking and problem-solving skills that students need to compete and contribute in our global society,” district officials stated.

Joliet D-86 basketball event to raise money for students The HERALD–NEWS JOLIET – A basketball event to raise money for Joliet Public Schools District 86 students will be held this weekend.

The fourth annual Hoops for D-86 fundraiser will take place from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Joliet West High School, 401 N. Larkin Ave., Joliet.

Proceeds from the event – presented by ExxonMobil – will be awarded in classroom grants to benefit students districtwide, according to a District 86 news release.

Since 2003, the Joliet Grade Schools Foundation has awarded 280 grants totaling more than $330,000. According to its 2014-15 foundation recipient report, 20 classroom grants were awarded to

JOLIET – The Rialto Square Theatre announced Monday that Rocktopia Live: A Classical (R)evolution will come to the theater April 7.

Tickets go on sale Friday.

Rocktopia Live fuses classical music with classic rock. The music combines compositions by Beethoven, Mozart and Tchaikovsky with bands such as Journey, Pink Floyd and The Who. The Joliet visit is part of Rocktopia’s inaugural national tour after being filmed live at the Hungarian State Opera House in Budapest last year. The 40-member Hungarian Opera Choir and the 65-piece Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra were in the performance along with rock musicians and vocalists.

JOLIET – The Will-Grundy Medical Clinic will hold an open house Feb. 9 as a recruitment event for new members for its board of directors.

The open house will be 6:30 p.m. at the clinic, located at 213 E. Cass St., Joliet.

The clinic is seeking “new talent” for its board, according to a news release.

The Will-Grundy Medical Clinic is a nonprofit provider of free medical and dental care for adults who meet income guidelines and do not have health insurance. It is supported totally by donations and receives no state or federal funding, the news release stated.

JOLIET – The Joliet Police Department, in partnership with the Illinois Department of Transportation, will participate in a statewide effort to reduce drunken drivers Feb. 3 to Feb. 6, over the Super Bowl weekend, according to a news release from the city of Joliet.

Special enforcement efforts will include both alcohol and seat-belt saturation patrols and seat-belt enforcement zones at various locations throughout the city.

Officers assigned to these details will be checking for impaired drivers as well as other violations of the Illinois Vehicle Code, with an emphasis on alcohol, insurance, occupant restraint, cellphone and child-restraint violations.

The enforcement campaign is possible through a grant from the Illinois Department of Transportation.

The students are members of the Health Occupations Students of America and were invited to the inaugural Go Red Goes STEM event by the American Heart Association on Nov. 16 in Chicago.

The event provided the West High School students speed mentoring, breakout sessions led by top STEM-related organizations, and opportunities to make lasting connections with companies and women leaders.

She attended Michigan State University and New Buffalo, Michigan High School-Class of 1959. Since 2002, Cynthia has been a longtime and loyal employee of Cracker Barrel.

She worked in the Will County Clerk’s Office in Joliet and sold Avon for 21 years. Bonnie loved her family and enjoyed spending time with them. Bonnie loved traveling, reading and sports, especially the Cubs. She was a Die-Hard Cub Fan member for many years.

Survivors include one son, Richard Alan (Sally) Kastl of Endicott, NY; one daughter, Gloria Jean (Bill) Shafer of Hennepin; one sister, Mary Jane Burkhalter of Kankakee; four grandchildren, Sara Shafer (Dave) Daniel, David (Nona) Shafer, Mary Holly Shafer (Bill) Snapp and Dorothy Marie Kastl; seven great-grandchildren, Alex Daniel, Natalie Daniel, Valerie Daniel, Hannah Shafer, Elisabeth Shafer, Ben Snapp and Jocelyn Snapp.

Groups bail out strangers to free poor from jail

CHICAGO – Activists who say too many poor people are unfairly languishing in U.S. jails because they can’t afford to post cash bail are increasingly deploying a new tactic: bailing out strangers.

Community groups are collecting donations from individuals, churches, cities and other organizations in more than a dozen cities, including New York, Chicago, Seattle and Nashville, to bail out indigent prisoners. Although many bail funds are still in their infancy, they’ve freed several thousand people in the last few years, and the number is growing.

So far, the overwhelming majority of defendants still show up for court even when they have no money on the line, according to the groups. Once free, the defendants are better able to fight their case, often leading to charges being dropped or reduced.

“Many, many people are having their lives ruined pre-trial because they can’t afford to get out of jail,” said Max Suchan, who co-founded the Chicago Community Bond Fund, which had bailed out 50 people as of December.

The bail funds are a step toward a larger goal for some legal reform activists: abolishing the cash bail system.

Advocates say it creates two unequal tiers of justice: one for people who can afford bail and one for people who can’t.

a fight with her mother-in-law, spent more than a year in Cook County Jail unable to come up with $25,000 needed to get out.

The mother of two, who was in the midst of a divorce, said she “lost everything – my home, my car, my business, my credit,” before the Chicago bond fund offered to get her out.

“I called my attorney and said, ‘Is this real?’ I said, ‘If they can do it, I promise I won’t jump the bail. I will do whatever they need me to do,’ ” Mayes recalled.

Mayes resolved her aggravated battery case a few months later and was sentenced to one day in prison, with credit for the 571 days already served.

As the broader bail reform issue has received more attention in recent years – in part because of events such as the death of Sandra Bland, a black woman who died in a Texas jail cell after a traffic stop while waiting help posting bail – opposition has come from bail bondsmen, who charge fees to post a bail bond on someone’s behalf, and some law enforcement officials.

Professional Bail Agents of the United States and the star along with her husband of television’s “Dog the Bounty Hunter,” said the community groups mean well but don’t have the resources or expertise to ensure that freed prisoners don’t abscond or reoffend.

“They’re not licensed or trained to deal with the criminal element,” Chapman said. “They’re going to get burned.”

The bail agents organization also argues that eliminating the cash bail system would put the public at risk. With few exceptions, Chapman said, “People are not in jail because they are poor.

They’re in jail because they broke the law.”

Some local authorities oppose it because bonds forfeited by people who don’t show up to court provide a revenue stream for counties.

But one of the biggest barriers to change is simply “history and practice,” said Peter Goldberg, who leads the Brooklyn Community Bail Fund.

“We’ve been doing this for so long to one degree or another that it’s just the way the system works,” he said.

Some groups, including the Brooklyn fund and one in the Bronx, will only post for people charged with misdemeanors and who are in jail because they cannot afford a bail of $2,000 or less.

Each year more than 10,000 cases in New York city fit those criteria, Goldberg said. Since May 2015, the Brooklyn fund has secured release for more than 1,300 of them. The group now serves 100 to 110 people per month with an average bail paid of $910. Goldberg said 95 per-

cent have returned for all court dates.

In Chicago the anti-cash bail movement has a seemingly unlikely ally in Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart. He argues the cash system should be abolished and replaced with more thorough background checks; if a person is considered dangerous, they stay in jail and if they’re not, they go free, with access to services such as drug-addiction counseling, if needed.

As of last week, there were more than 1,100 inmates at Cook County Jail – or about 15 percent of the roughly 7,500 total jail population – who needed to post bail of $5,000 or less to be released.

Of those, almost 300 needed $1,000 or less, county officials said. Housing each of those people costs the county a minimum of $150 per day.

Jocelyn Simonson, an assistant professor at Brooklyn Law School, wrote an article on bail funds that will appear in the Michigan Law Review in March.

When she started her research four years ago, she said there were three or four funds operating nationwide. There will be 15 to 20 by the end of this year, and “they have not plateaued,” Simonson said.

She says the funds give communities – particularly minority communities – a way to push back against a system that disproportionately punishes them, and it goes beyond getting some people out of jail.

“They’re not just freeing individuals,” Simonson said. “They’re making a statement about the fairness of the criminal justice system.”

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump on Monday fired Sally Yates, the acting attorney general and a Democratic appointee, after she refused to defend in court his controversial refugee and immigration ban.

The extraordinary public clash over Trump’s most consequential policy decision to date laid bare the discord and dissent surrounding the executive order, which temporarily halted the entire U.S. refugee program and banned all entries from seven Muslim-majority nations for 90 days.

The firing came hours after Yates directed Justice Department attorneys not to defend the executive order, saying she was not convinced it was lawful or consistent with the agency’s “obligation to always seek justice and stand for what is right.”

In a statement, Trump said Yates had “betrayed the Department of Justice by refusing to enforce a legal order designed to protect the citizens of the United States.” He named longtime federal prosecutor Dana Boente as Yates’ replacement.

Yates’ abrupt decision reflected the dissent over the order, with administration officials moving to distance themselves from the policy.

As protests erupted at airports over the weekend and confusion disrupted travel around the globe, some of Trump’s top advisers and fellow Republicans privately noted they were not consulted about the policy.

At least three top national security officials – Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly and Rex Tillerson, who is awaiting confirmation to lead the State Department – have told associates they were not aware of details of the directive until around the time Trump signed it. Leading intelligence officials also were left largely in the dark, U.S. officials said.

Tennessee Sen. Bob Corker, the top Republican on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said that despite White House assurances that congressional leaders were consulted, he learned about the order in the media.

Other parts of Trump’s administration were voicing dissent Monday. A large group of American diplomats circulated a memo voicing their opposition to the order, which temporarily halted the entire U.S. refugee program and banned all entries from seven Muslim-majority nations for 90 days.

In a startlingly combative response, White House spokesman Sean Spicer challenged those opposed to the measure to resign.

“They should either get with the program or they can go,” Spicer said.

The blowback underscored Trump’s tenuous relationship with his own national security advisers, many of whom he met for the first time during the transition, as well as with the government bureaucracy he now leads.

While Trump outlined his plan for temporarily halting entry to the U.S. from countries with terror ties during the campaign, the confusing way in which it finally was crafted stunned some who have joined his team.

QUEBEC CITY – A French Canadian known for far-right, nationalist views was charged Monday with six counts of first-degree murder and five counts of attempted murder over the shooting rampage at a Quebec City mosque that Canada’s prime minister called an act of terrorism against Muslims.

Suspect Alexandre Bissonnette made a brief court appearance and did not enter a plea in the attack that left six people dead during evening prayers Sunday. Wearing a white prisoner jump suit, his hands and feet shackled, he stared down at the floor and fidgeted, but did not speak.

The 27-year-old suspect, who has espoused support for the French farright party of Marine Le Pen and had liked U.S. President Donald Trump on his Facebook page, was known to those who monitor extremist groups in Quebec, said François Deschamps, an official with a refugee advocacy group.

“It’s with pain and anger that we learn the identity of terrorist Alexandre Bissonnette, unfortunately known to many activists in Quebec for taking nationalist, pro-Le Pen and anti-feminist positions at Laval University and on social media,” Deschamps wrote on the Facebook page of the group, Bienvenues aux Refugiés, or Welcome to Refugees.

More than 50 people were at the Quebec Islamic Cultural Centre when the shooting erupted. In addition to the six dead, 19 people were wounded – all men. Of the five victims who remained hospitalized, two were in critical condition, authorities said. The dead ranged in age from 39 to 60.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard both characterized the attack as a terrorist act, which came amid heightened tensions worldwide over Trump’s travel ban on seven Muslim countries.

Le Pen, leader of the National Front in France, is known for her anti-Muslim, anti-immigrant positions and has won the endorsement and admiration of white supremacists.

Canada is generally welcoming toward immigrants and all religions, but the French-speaking province of Quebec has had a long-simmering debate about race and religious accommodation. The previous separatist government of the province called for a ban on ostentatious religious symbols, such as the hijab, in public institutions.

Trudeau said in Parliament the vic-

tims were targeted simply because of their religion and spoke directly to the more than 1 million Muslims who live in Canada, saying, “We are with you.”

“Thirty-six million hearts are breaking with yours,” Trudeau said.

“Know that we value you.”

The prime minister later attended a vigil outside the mosque.

The suspect was arrested in his car on a bridge near d’Orleans, where he called 911 to say he wanted to cooperate with police. Authorities, who initially named two suspects, said the other man taken into custody was a witness to the attack and was released earlier Monday. They said they did not believe there were other suspects but were investigating.

Police did not give a motive for the attack.

The victims were businessmen, a university professor and others who had gathered for evening prayers, said Mohamed Labidi, the vice president of the mosque. “’It’s a very, very big tragedy for us,” Labidi said tearfully. “We have a sadness we cannot express.”

He said the victims were shot in the back. “Security at our mosque was our major, major concern,” he said. “But we were caught off guard.”

The shooting took place just before 8 p.m. Sunday.

Trump’s nominee for secretary of state clears procedural hurdle in Senate

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump’s nomination of Rex Tillerson for secretary of state cleared a Senate hurdle Monday, setting the stage for an extended debate over the president’s order banning travel from specific Muslim-majority countries and U.S. policy toward Russia.

Senators voted, 56-43, to put Tillerson’s bid to be the nation’s chief diplomat on track for confirmation later this week. Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., pressed unsuccessfully for a delay in the vote until Tillerson answered for Trump’s travel ban order.

Trump’s order bars individuals from seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the U.S. for 90 days. Trump has repeatedly said the move is aimed at protecting the nation against extremists looking to attack Americans and Amer-

ican interests. But recent domestic acts of deadly extremist violence have been carried out either

by U.S. citizens or by individuals whose families weren’t from the nations Rex Tillerson singled out.

Although many Democrats – including Schumer – will oppose Tillerson, they’ll need at least several Republicans to join them to derail the nomination. That appeared unlikely, even after two of the Senate’s leading Republican voices on national security voiced concern over Trump’s desire for a better relationship with Moscow.

Sens. John McCain of Arizona and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina also criticized Trump’s travel ban order and his failure to consult with key federal agencies, including the departments of Justice and Homeland Security.

“We fear this executive order will be-

come a self-inflicted wound in the fight against terrorism,” McCain and Graham said. That elicited an angry tweet from Trump, who called the two GOP senators “weak on immigration” and accused them of “looking to start World War III.” Whether Trump intends to lift U.S. sanctions against Russia will likely be another major theme in the Senate debate over Tillerson’s nomination, which is restricted to no more than 30 hours after Monday’s vote. The president last week was noncommittal, telling reporters at a news conference: “We’ll see what happens. As far as the sanctions, very early to be talking about that.”

But Democrats have doubted Tillerson’s willingness to be tough with Russia. Sen. Ben Cardin of Maryland, the top Democrat on the Foreign Relations Committee, said his responses to questions about sanctions against Moscow sounded more like answers a corporate

executive would give instead of a prospective secretary of state.

Trump complained Monday night about the confirmation process, tweeting: “The Democrats are delaying my cabinet picks for purely political reasons. They have nothing going but to obstruct.”

Trump has nominated some of the wealthiest Americans to serve a president, leading to exhaustive ethics reviews. A Senate schedule interrupted by breaks has also delayed the process.

McCain, the chairman of the Armed Services Committee, and Sen. Rob Portman, a member of the Foreign Relations Committee, last week warned the White House about easing any punishments on Moscow and vowed to turn the sanctions into law.

U.S. intelligence officials have concluded that Moscow meddled in the 2016 election to help Trump become president.

PETS is an uncomplicated company with 175 employees, zero debt, no preferred stock, no pension plan obligations and only 21 million shares outstanding, and all business activities are conducted from its new corporate headquarters in Pompano Beach, Florida.

Since 2006, profit margins have improved by nearly 50 percent, to 10.6 percent, and today management has over $52 million in cash. Last quarter’s sales moved briskly higher as PETS began experimenting with data-based

marketing and social media advertising. Last year, new customer count had grown by 6.6 percent on a year-overyear basis, and reorder revenues had jumped 7.4 percent.

Customer acquisition costs had fallen by 32 percent. Because data-based marketing allows PETS to stay focused and encourages continuing involvement with customers, management expects robust revenue and earnings gains this year. Revenues for 2017 could grow to $261 million, and share earnings should increase to $1.21. And the dividend may be raised to 80 cents this year.

Wall Street reckons that by 2020, PETS could trade between $29 and $31. This conservative income/growth issue could earn an average annual total return of 8 percent. And PETS’ shares are considered favorable for the accounts of widows, orphans and the indolent rich. I think that a 200-share purchase would be a ducky addition to your IRA. Over 65 percent of American households own pets. They spent about $55 billion on them in 2016, and 8 percent of that amount, $4.4 billion, was for medications. Today some 55 percent of PETS’ revenues derive from just

eight states, though PETS is licensed in every state.

So I’d not be surprised if a business development company or a hedge fund decided to acquire PETS. (TPG Capital bought Petco for $1.7 billion in 2006, and the Canada Pension Plan will buy Petco from TPG for $4.6 billion next month.) And building on PETS’ TV and new social media platform, the hedge fund or BDC could expand PETS’ business nationwide, bringing in much higher revenues.

Walgreens slashes offer for Rite Aid, pushes back deadline

The Associated Press Walgreens substantially lowered its offering price for drugstore rival Rite Aid and, facing resistance from U.S. regulators, raised the number of stores it would be willing to unload to ease monopoly concerns.

The companies initially expected to sell no more than 500 stores, but that was pushed to 1,200 under the new terms announced Monday.

The new offer for Rite Aid is between $6.50 and $7 per share, depending on how many stores need to be divested. When the deal was first announced in late 2015, Walgreens bid $9 per share, roughly $9.4 billion, for the nation’s third-largest drugstore chain.

The lower price range would cut the deal’s new value to between $6.84 billion and $7.36 billion, based on Rite Aid’s roughly 1.05 billion outstanding shares.

The deadline to complete the deal, which had already been extended once and expired last week, was pushed back to the end of July.

Shares of Rite Aid Corp. tumbled

more than 17 percent to $5.74 in midday trading Monday.

The combination of Walgreens and Rite Aid would create a drugstore giant with more than 11,000 stores nationally, even with the sale of more than a thousand stores. That’s a few thousand more than nearest competitor, CVS Caremark Crop.

Rite Aid, based in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania, runs nearly 4,600 drugstores.

The addition of its locations is expected to give Walgreens more negotiating muscle with drugmakers and other suppliers and to grow its presence in the Northeast and Southern California.

Walgreens also has a sizeable overseas presence, especially in the United Kingdom. It currently runs more than 13,000 stores in 11 countries, including 8,175 in the United States.

Walgreens said last December – more than a year after announcing the Rite Aid deal – that it would sell 865 stores to rival retailer Fred’s for $950 million due to concerns raised by federal anti-trust regulators.

Under the revamped deal, Walgreens, based in Deerfield, Illinois, will pay $6.50 per share for Rite Aid if it is required to divest 1,200 stores. The price rises to $7 per share if 1,000 or fewer are required.

Walgreens executives told analysts earlier this month that they still expected to close the deal. Executive Vice Chairman and CEO Stefano Pessina said Walgreens had a “very good” relationship with Federal Trade Commission representatives, and the company

wasn’t thinking of alternatives to the deal.

“We are working hard to have this deal approved and for the time being we don’t want to even think that the deal could not be approved after so many months,” he told analysts during a Jan. 5 conference call to discuss earnings.

Major deals have come under tough scrutiny because of the potential impact on consumers.

Last week, a federal judge rejected Aetna Inc.’s $34 billion bid for rival Humana Inc. on competitive grounds. The Department of Justice sued last summer to block that deal and a separate insurance acquisition, Anthem Inc.’s $48 billion purchase of Cigna Corp.

Walgreens also said Monday that it lowered the top end of its 2017 earnings forecast by 12 cents per share to account for the deal delay. Walgreens now forecasts adjusted earnings to range between $4.90 and $5.08 per share.

Analysts expect, on average, $5.02 per share, according to FactSet. Shares of Fred’s Inc. rose 3 percent to $14.55, while Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc. slipped 20 cents to $81.30, as broader indexes also fell.

Joliet West, Romeoville come away with good feelings after tight battle VIEWS Dick Goss As disappointed as Romeoville’s boys basketball team was at dropping a 69-66 decision to Southwest Prairie Conference leader Joliet West last Friday, Spartans coach Marc Howard came away with a positive feeling for the remainder of the season.

West (18-3) took over in the final minute, after Romeoville (12-8) had battled to a 66-65 lead. The Spartans entered on a seven-game win streak – their record had been clean in January – and they gave an excellent account of themselves, especially after trailing, 46-30, at halftime.

“After Christmas, we sat down as a team and talked about the defensive side of the ball,” Howard said.

“Everyone knew we weren’t playing the defense we could play. We focused more on defense and we took off. I’m excited about the rest of the season.”

Guard Kahlil Blakney led Romeoville, which hit 9 of 18 shots from 3-point range, with 17 points and seven rebounds. Dontia Johnson and Mike Salter scored 11, DeAndre Heckard 10 and Robert Johnson eight.

“Robert Johnson had a phenomenal game,” Howard said. “We had Dontia guard [Teyvion] Kirk in the second half, and we closed them down.

“Blakney is our motor guy. He was a big rebounder as a guard. He was penetrating on offense. I’m proud of him.”

And yet, West found a way to survive and move to 9-0 in the SPC. That was huge after the Tigers had lost to Whitney Young and Bolingbrook in their previous two games.

“It didn’t matter who we played tonight,” West senior guard/forward Trevian Bell said. “We were coming off two big losses, and the odds were all toward them.”

A statistic that was highlighted often after those two losses was freethrow shooting. The Tigers were 14 of 40 against Young, 10 of 21 against Bolingbrook.

At Romeoville, West warmed up to 18 of 31 and made four of six in the

final 42 seconds, with Bell knocking down three of four in that critical span.

“We didn’t miss as many free throws tonight,” said the Tigers’ Eddie Creal, who made seven of nine shots, two of three free throws and scored 17 points. “We meditated on it one time. I guess it worked.

“Trevian [Bell] is good to have shooting free throws with the game on the line. He is a real good shooter

and a team player. He does what he has to do.”

West coach Nick DiForti was happy to be able to discuss free throws in a positive light.

“We’ve been knocked for our freethrow percentage,” he said. “We can’t be anymore. It’s all mental. We’ve been in these [late-game] situations before, and we’ve come through them.”

SUBMITTED REPORTS ROMEOVILLE – The Great Lakes Valley Conference announced on Monday that Lewis University sophomore forward Jessica Kelliher has been selected as the GLVC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the period ending Jan. 29.

This is the fifth time in her career that Kelliher has won the award and third time this season.

Kelliher averaged 19.5 points and 6.5 rebounds a game, while shooting 78.3 percent (18 for 23) from the field in victories over both McKendree (Jan. 26) and Illinois Springfield

(Jan. 28).

“Jess had another phenomenal week,” Lewis coach Kristen Gillespie said. “She continues to find ways to positively impact our team.

“Her ability to shoot such a high percentage while being doubled and triple-teamed is truly something special.”

Kelliher filled up the stat sheet in the 65-50 win over McKendree with 17 points, eight rebounds, five steals, three blocks and two assists.

The sophomore was nearly unstoppable in a 71-63 win over UIS, converting 10 of 11 field-goal attempts to finish with a game-high 22 points.

That game marked the second time this season Kelliher registered at least 10 baskets with only one missed field-goal attempt.

Kelliher is averaging a team-best 20.1 points and 7.4 rebounds a game, while shooting 70 percent (177 for 253) from the floor. In GLVC action, Kelliher is averaging 22.2 points and 7.0 rebounds a game with a field-goal percentage of 71.3 percent (102 for 143).

Bell said the Tigers would not have been where they were without Casterberry, the post player who finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds.

“Tabyous is a really tough kid,” Bell said. “He was struggling a little early in the game, and he didn’t let it affect them.”

Top-ranked Lockport ready for next challenges

cherron@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – After claiming state trophies the past two years, the 201617 season figured to be a memorable one for Lockport’s wrestling team, and that has certainly been the case.

Coach Josh Oster’s squad finished the regular season with a 25-0 mark, one of the few teams in the state to go unbeaten. As a result, they are topranked in Class 3A by Illinois Matmen and are ranked 24th nationally by InterMat. Now the Porters begin the next phase of their campaign, starting with Saturday’s regional, which they’ll host. Lockport needs to win what could be the state’s toughest regional, which features ranked squads such as Providence Catholic, Oswego and Plainfield Central, in order to advance to the dual team sectional once the individual state series concludes.

Ten individuals on the squad have won at least 80 percent of their matches, while eight of those are ranked

among the top 10 at their weight classes. As a result, Lockport has beaten seven ranked teams in Illinois, and its closest meet was a 38-20 win over one of the state’s top-five teams, Mount Carmel.

“I like how this team is really good technique-wise,” said senior Trevell Timmons, a two-time placewinner who competed on the 2015 (fourth place) and 2016 (third place) teams.

“We know that this is the year that we can do it. We see one kid win and others want to win, just because he won.

As a team, we’re always looking for the most team points that we can get.

So if one guy gets a major, the next one wants a tech.

“Our goal every year is to face the best competition that we can and we’re not scared of anybody. We take it day-by-day. Our goal is to work hard each day and then worry about the next day when it comes. Our task right now is the regional, so we’re not thinking about the sectional or team state. We’ve put in a lot work with the coaches and they’ve helped us so

much. That’s helped make us the best team in the state and one of the best in the country.”

The Porters have been pointing to this season for several years. Besides possessing excellent talent, they have a squad that not only has few holes, but also features plenty of individuals who are capable of scoring big points or pulling out close wins, as needed.

“We’ve pretty much dominated in our dual meets and overall we’re a good team and we just have to prove that in the next couple of weeks,” Ronald Tucker Jr. said. “There’s very few holes this year. Last year we were a team that would win some big duals but also lose to some of the top teams.

This year we’re that team that people look at and think that they’ll be lucky to score in double digits against us.

It’s a good feeling to have that type of team.

“In the regional, we just have to stay focused and keep the team in the back of your head. If you can get bonus points late, go ahead, but other times, you just to win a match and worry

about yourself. We work hard and have such a close bond, but in practice we’ve yelled at each other or gotten into fights, but that just comes with the sport. Some of us hang out with each other seven days a week, and even in the offseason, I’m never away from these guys.”

So the Porters head into the postseason feeling very confident following their successful regular season, but also knowing all too well that if they let up at any point, that a truly special campaign might not conclude with them achieving the goals that they’ve laid out.

“I like how hard we work in practice and how badly we want to win,” James Pierandozzi said. “We’re having a great year and having fun doing stuff.

We’re winning almost everything that we’re at and being No. 1 in the state is also really great. We’ve worked really hard throughout the year, but none of that really matters if we don’t make it to team state. We’re all really close and tough guys so I think we’re ready for the state tournament.”

No. 21 Duke beats No. 20 Notre Dame THE ASSOCIATED PRESS SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Jayson Tatum had 19 points and a career-high 14 rebounds, Grayson Allen scored 21 points and No. 21 Duke beat No. 20 Notre Dame, 84-74, on Monday night.

Luke Kennard and Matt Jones each added 16 points for the Blue Devils (17-5, 5-4 ACC), who strung together consecutive wins for the first time since the first week of January.

This also was the Blue Devils’ second win since being banned from their locker room by coach Mike Krzyzewski last week. Jeff Capel is 3-3 as interim coach for Krzyzewski, who still is recovering after back surgery.

Duke leaned heavily on its starting five, getting all but six points from that group, with Kennard and Amile Jefferson fouling out. The teams combined for 48 fouls and 52 free throws.

V.J. Beachem scored 20 points and Bonzie Colson had 17 points and nine rebounds for Notre Dame (17-6, 6-4), which has lost three straight.

After the Irish cut Duke’s lead to six, Jones responded with a threepoint play and scored five of the next seven points to push Duke ahead 6350 with 9:34 left.

The Irish weren’t done yet, running off 12 straight points to cut the lead to one with 6:25 to go, but again the Devils responded, with Allen hitting a 3-pointer and a pull-up jumper from atop the key.

Collins is naturally nervous about the attention that goes along with success – “I worry about it every second,” he said Sunday with a chuckle, “because as a coach you’re always worrying about what could derail what you got going good.” – but McIntosh sounded a reassuring note in the wake of the victory against the Hoosiers.

“We’re really hungry ... We know really well it can go as fast as it came,” he said.

EVANSTON – Bryant McIntosh is close enough he can see it when he closes his eyes. They all can, up and down the coaching staff and throughout the roster. With every 3-pointer, every shutdown performance, they move one step closer to the sweetest of uncharted territory for Northwestern.

At long last, the NCAA Tournament.

The Wildcats have been playing men’s basketball for more than a century and never made it to the sport’s marquee event. But McIntosh and company look ready to take down that drought, brimming with confidence heading into the final stretch of their increasingly successful season.

“We feel we are really good, but we can be even better, which I think is scary,” McIntosh said. “Yeah, I mean that’s the fun part, going in each and every day and understanding what everyone thinks of this program and kind of allowing that to be a little bit of a fire in our bellies. ... We have to be different, like this, this is over. This isn’t the same Northwestern.”

Sure looks that way.

McIntosh scored 21 points as Northwestern beat Indiana, 68-55, on Sunday for its sixth straight win. It’s the longest Big Ten win streak for the Wildcats since the 1932-33 team matched

a school record with seven in a row, and their 7-2 start in conference play is their best since the 1937-38 season.

When the Top 25 was released on Monday, Northwestern came in at No. 25 for its first appearance in the poll since the 2009-10 season. Coach Chris Collins and the Wildcats ( 18-4) also began the workweek all alone in third in the conference, just a half-game back of co-leaders Maryland and Wisconsin.

“They’re a good team,” Indiana coach Tom Crean said. “I mean, Chris is a great coach. I’ve said that every year I’ve been here; he’s a great coach with a great staff.”

Collins, a native of suburban Chicago, left his plum assistant job at Duke to replace Bill Carmody after he was fired in March 2013. The Wildcats improved their record in each of his first three years on the sideline, going from 14-19 for the 2013-14 team to 20-12 last season.

Scottie Lindsey leads this year’s team with 15.4 points a game, and McIntosh averages 12.8 points and a Big Ten-best 5.7 assists. Athletic forward Vic Law is healthy again after missing last season following left shoulder surgery, but the biggest key for Northwestern has been its stout defense.

“I just think we’re a tough-minded team,” Collins said. “In my first year, we couldn’t score at all so we had to play great defense. Then I thought the

Taylor-made move lands brothers, Jeff Gordon win in Rolex 24

The Associated Press DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – He’s one of the top racers in America, and almost always overlooked, even on the day the boldest move of his career gave him the biggest win of his life.

Ricky Taylor used a gutsy pass with less than 7 minutes remaining in the Rolex 24 at Daytona to fearlessly grab the win for Wayne Taylor Racing. After, he stood in the background in victory lane.

He had an American flag draped over one shoulder, a Rolex watch crammed under an elbow, and was content in the shadow of his extrovert brother, Jordan, NASCAR superstar Jeff Gordon and retiring veteran Max Angelelli.

On the day the limelight should have been his, Taylor’s move Sunday put Gordon in a group with Mario Andretti, A.J. Foyt and Jamie McMurray as the only drivers to win both the Daytona 500 and this prestigious sports car race.

Team owner Wayne Taylor, father of the two workhorses on the team, was ecstatic for his quieter older son.

Jordan has a personality larger than life, and even if the brothers are equally talented, Ricky never gets the credit he deserves.

“I don’t think Ricky has had a fair evaluation of his talent, and I think today, if he doesn’t get it after today, then I don’t know what to say,” Wayne Taylor said.

The team was in the top three for 23 hours but found itself trailing Action Express in the final hour in a battle of new Cadillacs. His shot at the celebrated victory was down to one final at-

tempt at a pass of Filipe Albuquerque, and Taylor dove inside of him entering Turn 1 of the road course.

Taylor seemed to have the inside lane, but it wasn’t clear whether he could complete the pass. Contact between the two cars sent Albuquerque spinning, and IMSA reviewed the action to see whether Taylor warranted a penalty. IMSA said there was no offense.

Wayne Taylor said it was about time his oldest son showed what he’s made of inside a race car.

“I think he needs to be bold,” he said of the 27-year-old. “God, if there’s anything anyone can teach him is to take some (gosh darn) credit, you know?

Stop just being nice because this is an unfair business.”

The Taylor team won its first Rolex since 2005 – when Wayne Taylor was still a driver, and it marked the first victory in the event for his sons, who grew up in Orlando and have been coming to this race their entire lives.

The lineup included longtime Taylor co-driver Angelelli, who was adamant this was his final race, and Gordon, who won the first Rolex watch of his career. Gordon ran this race once before, in 2007, with the Taylor team.

Chip Ganassi Racing also won its seventh class race. But team Taylor was the story.

With so many feel-good elements to this victory, it was easy to overlook Ricky Taylor. He praised what he learned from working with Gordon, reflected on his longtime mentorship with Angelelli and was relieved to have given his father a victory that might ease the burden in a constant search for team funding.

But that move? Well, for that he seemed quite pleased with himself.

ELWOOD – Cancer.

Just hearing the word can cause a sinking feeling. For Paulette Apostolou, 49, of Elwood, the distress of a cervical cancer diagnosis was combined with regret.

Apostolou hadn’t received a Pap test in 14 years.

“I didn’t think I needed to go,” Apostolou said. “I was busy building a business with my ex-husband. Just life. I didn’t take care of myself.”

According to the American Cancer Society’s website, about 12,820 new cases of invasive cervical cancer will be diagnosed and about 4,210 women will die from cervical cancer in 2017. Women younger than 20 are rarely diagnosed with it; most cases are found in women younger than 50.

That said, more than 15 percent of cervical cancers are found in women over age 65, generally in women who did not have regular screenings, the American Cancer Society’s website stated.

“I think it’s the most preventable cancer we have in women’s cancer,” said Dr. Nita Lee, urogynecologic oncologist and assistant professor of obstetrics/gynecology at the University of Chicago. “What’s concerning is that every time we see a new patient, we see this as a missed opportunity.”

Cervical cancer rates have been fairly stable in the United States, Lee said, and that’s due to regular screening through Pap and HPV testing. The Pap test does a good job at catching early stage cancer – when less invasive treatments are needed – and even precancer, which requires even less intervention, Lee said.

The challenge is helping women understand the necessity of regular screening. Lee has heard it all: “I’m too busy.”

“My doctor didn’t recommend it.” “I’m not at risk. I don’t have a history of abnormal Pap smears.”

Lee gets it.

“Nobody likes to have a pelvic exam,” Lee said. “It’s about doing what’s good for you.”

‘I thought I was in early stage menopause’

Apostolou said she started feeling unwell in 2015 and shrugged off the back pain (“I thought my sciatica was acting up”) and irregular periods (“I thought I was in early stage menopause”).

But then Apostolou developed a malodorous discharge she could not ignore.

“It scared the hell out of me,” she said.

Apostolou said her doctor did a Pap test and didn’t make her feel badly for falling behind in her screening. Four days later, the doctor called back and

said Apostolou needed a colposcopy, which checks for abnormal areas of tissue, and an endocervical biopsy.

A week later, Apostolou received another phone call, to talk about options.

“I knew this wasn’t going to be good,” Apostolou said. “But I still didn’t think I’d hear ‘cancer.’”

Apostolou had a simple hysterectomy, which removed her cervix, uterus and fallopian tubes, but left her ovaries intact.

And then she received more bad news.

According to the Cancer Treatment Center of America, most cervical cancers are squamous cell carcinomas, but Apostolou had an adenocarcinoma, which shows up about 10 percent to 20 percent of the time. Apostolou was referred to Lee, who recommended a PET scan to

check for cancer in Apostolou’s other organs and lymph nodes, Apostolou said.

The results were clear, but Apostolou said Lee recommended more surgery, to remove Apostolou’s ovaries and nearly 2 inches of the top portion of her vagina.

The surgery, projected to take four hours, lasted eight hours. During her recovery, Apostolou’s catheter plugged three times in the first week. She dealt with the effects of instant menopause: night sweats, aching joints, dry skin, weight gain and depression.

“I was not prepared mentally for this recovery,” Apostolou said. “[Lee] told me it would be hard, but I didn’t realize just how hard it would be ... I didn’t know how to be happy. I went into this dark place.”

JOLIET – Ultra Foods, in partnership with the nonprofit organization Making Change, recently presented a check for more than $13,000 to the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.

The funds were raised in October during the “Because Every Life Matters” breast cancer awareness point-ofpurchase fundraiser at Strack and Van Til’s Riverfront Plaza location and all 11 Chicago-area Ultra Foods stores, including the Joliet location.

Joliet customers donated to the campaign by selecting a $1, $3 or $5 donation coupon at checkout stands to be scanned by the cashier and added to their final bill.

Will-Grundy clinic announces board recruitment, open house

JOLIET – Will-Grundy Medical Clinic is seeking new talent for its board of directors.

The clinic will host a recruitment event at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 9 at 213 E. Cass St. in

Joliet.

Features of the event include a gourmet meal prepared by award-winning chef Peggy Gerdes, courtesy of the Autobahn Country Club.

The Will-Grundy Medical Clinic is 100 percent donor-supported and receives no state or federal funding.

Open since 1988, the clinic has provided over 150,000 patient visits. The clinic provides health and dental care free of charge to individuals residing in Will and Grundy counties who do not have access to health care.

In Will and Grundy counties combined, there are over 100,000 individuals who do not have access to care.

In 2015, the clinic was awarded the Innovation Award from the Illinois Association of Free and Charitable Clinics for its Care Coordination program.

The clinic also was one of the first in the state of Illinois to receive designation as a site for the CDC’s national diabetes prevention program.

Community Health Center to offer pediatric exams, day cares and nursery schools

JOLIET – Starting Feb. 22, the Will County Health Department Community Health Center will offer a special service to day cares and nursery schools who are required to have pediatric exams for the children who are in their programs.

From 8 to 11 a.m. Wednesdays, the Community Health Center will host the Special Community Agency Access program. These agencies will be able to bring their children to the health center, by appointment or walk-in basis, for these required pediatric exams.

The exams are available on a sliding fee scale, and many forms of public insurance, such as Medicaid, Medicare and private insurance, will be accepted.

As for new treatments, some physicians and podiatrists offer laser treatment of toenail fungus. Although some patients report good results, reliable data about the longterm efficacy of laser treatment is scarce.

Dear Doctors: I had toenail fungus two years ago, and my doctor prescribed Lamisil.

It took a long time, but it worked. Now the fungus, which is so ugly, is back again. Why is it so hard to get rid of, and are there any new treatments available?

Dear Reader: Toenail fungus is fairly common, but that’s not much consolation to the 6 million or so people in the United States who have to put up with it. It’s an often-unsightly infection caused by a microscopic organism called a dermatophyte that lives beneath the toenail. More precisely, it colonizes the portion of the nail known as the matrix, which is underneath the cuticle.

Initial symptoms are a yellowish or brownish discoloration of the toenail. As the infection progresses, nails often become thickened, crumbly and malformed. Although the fungus affects the appearance of the nails, it actually lives on the layer directly beneath the toenail. That’s why it’s so difficult to treat.

Your nails are made up of keratin, a tough, fibrous protein. The same hard shell that protects your toes is giving shelter to the fungus. For topical medications to be successful in killing the fungus, they have to be able to reach it.

Anti-fungal creams and liquids are available, both in over-the-counter preparations and by prescription. But because nails are not porous, it’s difficult for the medication to reach the infection in concentrations great enough to kill the fungus. As a result, success rates for topical treatments are low.

Systemic medications, like the Lamisil your physician prescribed, take a more direct approach. You swallow the pill, it gets digested and the medication enters your bloodstream. Your circulatory system delivers the medication directly to the fungus living beneath your toenail and, in the bestcase scenario, kills it.
