Looking west across the Des Plaines River - Joliet In 1889, the State of Illinois authorized the establishment of the Sanitary District of Chicago to deal with the sewage issue in the city as the Deep Cut project and other ideas failed to keep the discharge of waste from entering Lake Michigan.

As the drinking water became more unpalatable and Chicago’s population increased to more than 1.5 million, a decision was made to permanently divert and dilute the feculent matter by streaming it away in a larger and deeper canal.

Isham Randolph, a civil engineer, served as the chief engineer for the digging of the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal and helped oversee the extension of the canal through Lockport.

In the first two decades of the 20th century, the Sanitary and Ship Canal and the Cal-Sag Channel made some deep-water shipping possible in the region, but

Illinois Waterway project, which would deliver a final death blow to the Illinois and Michigan Canal, was started by the state of Illinois and completed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1933.

The new waterway extension made the I&M Canal obsolete, and once the construction was complete, the towpath that separated the river from the canal would be submerged.

Theater shines, but other parts of property need extensive work

mmallory@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Downtown Joliet was quiet Saturday morning, but inside the Rialto Square Theatre visitors shared equal parts optimism and amazement.

Newly appointed Rialto board members were touring the theater’s expansive property. It included the historic theater itself, inner workings of the facility the public has never seen and multiple floors of rental space – some in good condition, some dilapidated.

The special board meeting was designed as an orientation session for the seven new board members, appointed after the former board resigned Dec. 29.

Because it was an open meeting, 15 to 20 members of the public – many considered longtime patrons of the theater – were welcome to come along on the tour. It took about two hours and was followed by a question-and-answer session with the new board.

“We are in show business, but we’re also very much in the real estate busi-

ness,” Interim Rialto Executive Director Timothy Berry said as the tour began.

During and after the tour, board members and the general public seemed equally optimistic for the theater’s future, despite a bevy of capital improve-

ment projects that former building operations manager Mike Biedron pointed out as he anchored much of the tour. Then there’s the nearly $600,000 in outstanding bills as of December.

But the group appeared amazed at the current state of the theater property,

in both good and bad ways.

Attendees marveled at the sheer artistry of the theater, the esplanade and the hundreds of acts who autographed walls of the green room and the stairway leading to the stage. Some took pictures and jotted down notes throughout the tour.

The exterior of the theater building needs work. The roof of one of the office buildings has about five years left, Biedron said. On the interior, most empty rental space is in poor condition and brings in no money.

But the 60 percent of space that is rented – mostly to law firms – is a source of revenue for the theater, Biedron said.

They also saw the limitations of the theater.

It has little storage space and room to move behind the curtains. This makes it near impossible to accommodate acts that use anything more than minimal stage equipment.

David Jameson proud to serve, happy to come home

JOLIET – David Jameson went around one side of the hedgerow and met a German soldier coming around the other side.

“Both had guns but neither one drew them,” said Steve Jameson of Mount Prospect, David’s son. “They both turned around and ran the other way.”

A proud World War II veteran, David Jameson never removed his World War II cap.

“I think he was just happy he served and was able to come home and raise his family,” Steve said.

Lois McCann, who knew David from Essington Place in Joliet, said David was a wonderful friend who mostly valued his family and his military service.

“He wore that veteran’s cap everywhere he went, no matter how cold it was,” Lois said. “He sat at the table with me going on nine years in May. He told me all about his service and how he had seven sons and that his wife died so many years ago. He was always talking about Margie, his wife.”

In an email, Steve detailed his father’s service. David joined the National Guard in 1941 at the age of 19. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, David, a newlywed, was inducted into the U.S. Army and was assigned to the 320th infantry regiment 35th Division – General George S. Patton’s third army.

Within that division, a small artillery company – the Cannon Co. – was developed, for which David volunteered. He always maintained it was the best decision he ever made.

“He was able to ride in a jeep instead of marching on foot through Europe,” Steve said in the email.

In preparation, the Army stationed David at several bases. Before the formation of the Cannon Company, these were Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, and San Luis Obispo, California.

In addition to various jobs to support his family, David worked the night shift as a stationary engineer for Container Corp. in Chicago. He coached – and then managed – Old Town Little League, where his sons played. He liked sitting in the backyard and watching birds.

“He was very much into enjoying the outdoors,” Steve said, “and he could do the Rubik’s Cube in just a few seconds. For Christmas, we’d get him all kinds of puzzles. He enjoyed the challenge of it all.”

In 1967, David moved from Chicago to Romeoville with Marge and the four sons who were born. He retired in 1985 and moved to Florida, where he and Marge lived until her death in 1993.

David then moved to a mobile home in Seneca until 2008, when he moved to Essington Place, his home until October 2016. At the time of David’s death on Jan. 10 at age 94, David had 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

What was the best day of his life?

The day in 2010, David and his brother, Joe Jameson, also a veteran, experienced an Honor Flight. Equal to it was returning to France in 2004 with Steve, several other family members and a group from his Army division.

“We went back through the route he took with the group,” Steve said. “That was pretty cool. Every town we went through had ceremonies and parades.”

Steve said his father shared memories along the way. David even found his old foxhole.

“I sat down in that foxhole and looked out,” Steve said. “I could see just past the edge of the woods to the open field where the Germans were. I tried to imagine how it felt to be fired at.”

Carolina; then to Camp Kilmer, New Jersey and onward to New York. That’s where David boarded a troop transport for a two-week trip overseas.

David camped in the English town Okehampton. He crossed the English Channel and landed in Normandy, Omaha Beach July 6, 1944, 30 days after D-Day. He fought in Bastogne, Belgium, during the Battle of the Bulge and marched through these cities in France: Saint-Lo, Chateaudun, Metz and Nancy.

He also marched through Luxem-

bourg, Belgium, Venlo, Holland and into Germany. He stayed in Europe until October 1954 and rode home on the Queen Elizabeth. His wife, Marge, and baby son, Dave Jr., were present to greet him.

David earned a bronze star and five battle stars: Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. Now David could embark upon his second service – raising seven sons.

ment is brought to the stage. Rialto staff took every piece of metal they could off the doorway to get the wheel through, and the theater narrowly escaped a cancellation.

Only board members were able to see certain areas of the building, such as the boiler room. After the tour, each board member was asked for their reactions.

“The two words that come to my mind are enlightening and frighten-

ing,” Chairman Robert Filotto said.

“It’s a little overwhelming with all the repairs that are needed. I hope we can get a list so that we can prioritize how to tackle that going forward,” member Donnie Chestnutt said.

Member Joe Carlasare thanked Biedron for eight years of work at the Rialto.

“And especially for wanting to come back and explain [the property] to us,”

he said. “We really need to rely on that institutional knowledge moving forward.”

Elwood resident Tom Howard criticized former leaders of the theater’s management team.

“I’m delighted with the conditions of the theater,” Howard said. “But I’m disgusted at so much empty space. …

Get this place rented out and bring in some revenue.”

Channahon last stop for Smithsonian exhibit

Shaw Media correspondent CHANNAHON – The Four Rivers Environmental Education Center is the sixth and final stop for a Smithsonian Institution display on water and how it affects our environment. It’s part of Museum on Mainstreet, a collaboration between the Smithsonian and Illinois Humanities.

The display – Water/Ways – officially opened Saturday with a ribbon cutting, speeches and refreshments.

It will remain at the center through March 11.

“The forest preserve district is the last chance Illinoisans will have to see this fantastic exhibit in our state,” said Ralph Schultz, COO of the Forest Preserve District of Will County.

Tina Riley, facility supervisor for the forest preserve district , began working on the grant to bring the display to Channahon in June 2015, just because of the sheer number and miles of waterways that come through our communities, she said.

“It’s very thought-provoking, the way water impacts our lives,” Riley said. “It plays a part in all our lives. We

The Smithsonian displays includes huge interactive boards that tell a story of how water flow connects and divides the world, how it powers industry and agriculture and the influence waterways have had on American culture.

Penny Vanderhyden brought her three grandchildren to the grand opening. The kids were intrigued with the many things available to see and touch.

“I like to introduce the kids to nature and education,” Vanderhyden said.

There are three companion exhibits in the room as well. One is a display on commerce along the river, created by Illinois Marine Towing. Over half a million jobs depend upon the inland river systems, according to their information.

The forest preserve district staff created two on-site displays; Wings on Water – about the many birds that live near water and in this area – and another on trash in the water. Forest Preserve District staff spent hours collecting trash that washed out of the Des Plaines River into a little bay. They designed a “totem pole” of trash they collected, including everything from little toys, bottle caps, straws and butane lighters.

While some of the garbage is purposefully tossed into the river, a lot of it is blown in from the roads or could even

come out of sanitary sewers during flooding. Some is washed downstream from other rivers.

Jessica Scholtes, Brandon Bernhard and Billy Marquardt were studying the displays for a class at Joliet Junior College. Their reactions to the trash exhibit ranged from sad and disgusted to amazed.

Coming up April 22, after the exhibit is gone, will be the annual shoreline clean up for Earth Day, said Kelli Parke, who works in visitor services at the forest preserve district.

“It makes such an impact,” Parke said. “The activity changes your perspective on trash.”

Another small companion exhibit can be found at the Channahon Municipal building. Channahon grade school children drew pictures to go along with the tabletop Smithsonian display, said Channahon Police Chief Jeff Wold, who came by to see the larger exhibit.

There will be 25 other programs and events designed around the Water/ Ways exhibit, including a winter wonder night hike, nature play day, ice harvesting and water trivia. You can find the full list of events on the Four Rivers Environmental Education Center’s Facebook page under the events tab.

“Given the confluence of rivers in Channahon, I can’t think of a more appropriate place for this exhibit to be,” said forest preserve district Commissioner Don Gould. “I am really thrilled to have it here.”

Conflict resolution may make the difference in bullying Anti-bullying efforts are almost as important as academics in schools these days, especially since the Columbine incident.

Schools spend a lot of resources teaching not only children, but educators and administrators how to respond and what measures to take.

School children learn character education and attend assemblies on the subject; educators take seminars and read the most recent research studies.

Parents have to keep a vigilant eye on what is happening in children’s lives, not only at school, but on the internet and even within groups of friends and at home.

When bullying does occur, typical programs teach students to tell a trusted grown up, which many times results in further retaliation by the bully.

If a child fights back, both the perpetrator and the victim receive consequences because of Zero Tolerance policies.

Another way of dealing with these situations has caught the attention of Three Rivers School Channahon Principal Susan Kavich and it appears to have made a huge difference in the number of bullying incidences, refer-

The program is Bullies2Buddies, created by Izzy Kalman and focuses on using conflict resolution instead of acting like a victim, which is usually what fuels the fire for the person who is doing the bullying.

It teaches students to solve the problem, which in turn gives them the self confidence to continue that behavior instead of expecting others to do it for them. “[Other programs] teach our children they are not capable of handling their own problems,” Kavich said.

When other children in the vicinity stand up for the student and aren’t just passive bystanders, the bully doesn’t have incentive from the crowd to boost his or her ego, either.

attended workshops on it.

“I had been to numerous [different workshops], but when I went to this one I quit looking,” Kavich said. “My gut tells me [the others[ don’t work.”

Kalman, who is a nationally known psychologist and psychotherapist, uses his psychology skills in his approach to resolving the bullying issue.

He has over 20 years of research behind his method, said Kavich.

When parents first hear Kalman’s approach, they may think he’s blaming the victim, but as he gets more involved in the program, he’s actually teaching kids how to act (not react) to a bully so they don’t become a victim.

He works on body language and eye contact, for instance. He uses role playing so students can practice new skills before a situation arises.

He also teaches adults how and when to intervene and how to stop the behavior, Kavich said.

Kalman held a three-day workshop for Channahon schools in January.

There were meetings with students, educators and administrators and even an open night for parents to learn this approach.

“The only way for this to work is if everyone is doing it,” Kavich said.

While this wasn’t the first time District 17 held Bullies2Buddies workshops, it is the first time that Kalman himself was available.

“It has made a huge difference at the school level,” Kavich said.

“I strongly believe in its philosophy and psychology. It absolutely works once you understand it.”

OBITUARIES MARY FRANCES DRAPER

Born: November 4, 1922; in Joliet, IL Died: January 21, 2017; in San Francisco, CA Mary Frances Draper (nee) Bartley, age 94, died January 21, 2017, following years of determined effort to live forever. In recent months, her health rapidly declined. She died at the home of her son in

San Francisco.

Mary Fran was born on November 4, 1922, and raised in Joliet, IL. She attended St. Raymond’s grade school, St. Francis Academy and St. Francis College (University of St. Francis) in Joliet and graduated in 1942 with a BA in English literature from the University of Illinois, in Champaign-Urbana.

She wed Addison Dent Draper of Washington, D.C., September 4, 1942. They were both active in parish and community life. Mary Fran taught CCD (Confraternity of Christian Doctrine), procured food and clothing for local migrant workers, volunteered for UNICEF, and was active in the Christian Family Movement.

Together they raised 11 children in Joliet, IL and LaSalle-Peru, IL: Michael A. Draper, of Seattle, WA, Robyn Draper-Praetz (Peter) of Oswego, IL, Susan Draper (Michael) of Brooklyn, NY, Genie Draper (deceased 2008) of Tours, France, Peter Bartley Draper of Chicago IL, Paul J. Draper (Jean) of San Francisco, CA,

Miriam A. Goldfien (Robert) of Mill Valley, CA; Patrick A. Draper (Lisa) (deceased 1987) of Seattle, WA, Greg C. Draper (Marcey) of Carson City, NV; Allison D. Draper (Jeff) of Campbell, CA; and Jonathon A. Draper (Ginny) of Omaha, NE. During her life, Mary Frances worked as an Assistant at the Peru Public Library, as an Aide to State Rep. Donald Anderson; a registered social worker for Horizons Center in LaSalle-Peru, IL and with her husband ran an outdoor education program for middle school students “Natures Classroom” in LaSalle-Peru, IL. Her work was a reflection of her varied interests and passions – literature and poetry; politics and social justice; care for physically and intellectually challenged individuals; gardening and the environment; lifelong learning and Elderhostel. She also liked hot air ballooning and cross country skiing.

Well into her 9th decade, she swam daily at the YMCA, did volunteer work with Guide Dogs for the Blind and for several local shelters and agencies in Martinez, CA. She loved social gatherings where she was often asked to perform oratorical ditties, musical parodies and narrations from Mother Goose.

Following her husband’s death in 1985, she traveled in Europe, Central America and the National Parks. She reveled in the company of her children, grandchildren and friends. She enjoyed the arts, visiting museums, attending theater and concerts. She loved camping, swimming, hiking and spending time at the

family’s cabin on the Magnetawan River in Ontario, CAN. After her retirement, she moved to Martinez, CA to be near children. Eventually she lived for periods with her various children, enjoying a rich and varied life with her extended family.

At the time of her death she was living in San Francisco, CA with her son, Paul, his wife, Jean, and their son, William.

Mary Fran was predeceased by her parents, Judge James V. and Frances M. Bartley, of Joliet, IL; brother, James M. Bartley of Las Vegas, NV; and sister, Nancy Hall (nee Bartley) of Houston, TX. Also her son, Patrick A. Draper, of Seattle, WA; daughter, Frances Eugenie Draper of Tours France; and infant granddaughter, Sarah Inez Draper died before her.

She is survived by 9 children and numerous daughters- and sons-in-law. In addition, she is remembered by 24 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; many friends; and her loving caregiver, Terry.

Friends and family describe her as a vital role model, indomitable, joyful, curious, good-humored, gritty, playful, engaged, strong, assertive and loving. She left a mark and will be deeply missed. She is best known for her assertion that “God loves a flower thief.”

A Mass will be said in San Francisco and a memorial service and a celebration of her life will occur in spring, at the time of burial in Joliet, IL.

SPRINGFIELD – A federal court monitor is criticizing Illinois for failing to ensure that people with developmental disabilities receive adequate support within their communities for a second year in a row.

The monitor’s annual report, issued last week, says a lack of state funding to raise caregiver wages has created unprecedented shortages of workers who assist developmentally disabled residents when they move out of institutions and into apartments or group homes. The services include everything from eating and hygiene to learning life skills.

The report expanded on a similar finding last year. But the Illinois Department of Human Services said in a statement that it disagrees with the conclusion. The agency insists that the state continues to meet requirements laid out in a federal decree issued in 2011 after civil rights groups sued Illinois for failing to comply with a 1999 Supreme Court ruling that unjustified institutionalization constitutes discrimination.

The decree details what Illinois must do to provide community support for the developmentally disabled.

Springfield museum to open exhibit on New Philadelphia

SPRINGFIELD – A temporary museum exhibit is to open in Springfield showcasing New Philadelphia – the first U.S. town to be founded and registered by an African-American.

The exhibit will be at the Springfield and Central Illinois African American History Museum through the end of July. The Springfield State Journal-Register reported that the exhibit is a partnership between the Illinois State Museum and the African American History Museum.

VANDALIA – A former state Capitol in southern Illinois once again will welcome visitors to celebrate Abraham Lincoln’s birthday. The Vandalia Statehouse State Historic Site will offer music, refreshments and presentations about the 16th president on Feb. 11. Admission is free.

The Vandalia Statehouse was the center of Illinois’ government from 1836 to 1839.

It was the fourth Illinois statehouse and is the oldest surviving capitol building in the state. Lincoln served in the Vandalia Statehouse when he was a member of the Illinois House of Representatives. The building was placed on the National Register of

Chicago police chief says he’s had kidney offers

CHICAGO – Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said some of his own officers and citizens alike have offered to donate a kidney to him since he disclosed that he’s on a kidney transplant waiting list.

After nearly fainting at a Friday news conference, Johnson announced that he’s had a kidney condition for decades and now is awaiting a transplant.

He said Saturday that since he made that disclosure, citizens have called 911 to give their information for possibly becoming a kidney donor for him.

The Chicago Tribune reported that Johnson said those kind offers have given him

number of people awaiting services who’ve left institutions or family homes to live on their own or in group residences. But it found Illinois out of compliance because state government has not budgeted sufficient funds to guarantee that disabled people integrating into community life receive personalized care that addresses more than basic needs.

Court orders issued last year ensured the state continued funding service providers at 2015 levels. But federal monitor Ronnie Cohn said these funds were not enough to combat a staffing shortage.

The shortage left providers in 2016 up to 30 percent understaffed and created turnover rates as high as 70 percent, which resulted in uprooted routines, overtime shifts for remaining staff and fewer resources devoted to activities that help disabled people engage with their community.

The report also referenced a Chicago Tribune investigation that found more than a thousand cases of abuse and neglect in state-funded group homes.

But Cohn told The Associated Press in an interview that ensuring quality care goes beyond more closely monitoring providers.

“Even the best providers with the best of intentions can’t manufacture money to keep people working,” Cohn said. “When the money stops moving, it creates problems.”

NEW YORK – President Donald Trump’s immigration order sowed more chaos and outrage across the country Sunday, with travelers getting detained at airports, panicked families searching for relatives and protesters marching against the sweeping measure that was blocked by several federal courts. Attorneys struggled to determine how many people had been affected so far by the rules, which Trump said Saturday were “working out very nicely.”

But critics described widespread confusion and said an untold number of travelers were being held in legal limbo because of ill-defined procedures. Others were released. Lawyers manned tables at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport to help families whose loved ones had been detained, and about 150 Chicago-area lawyers showed up at O’Hare Airport after getting an email seeking legal assistance for travelers.

“We just simply don’t know how many people there are and where they are,” said Lee Gelernt, deputy director of the American Civil Liberties Union’s Immigrants’ Rights Project.

Advocates for travelers said the chaos is likely to continue. The executive director of the National Immigration Law Center, Marielena Hincapie, said “this is just the beginning.”

“We’re really in a crisis mode, a constitutional crisis mode in our country, and we’re going to need everyone,” she said. “This is definitely one of those all-hands-on-deck moments.”

On Sunday talk shows, White House officials defended Trump’s actions.

“I can’t imagine too many people out there watching this right now think it’s unreasonable to ask a few more questions from someone traveling in and out of Libya and Yemen before being let loose in the United States,” White House chief of staff Reince Priebus said.

White House adviser Kellyanne Conway described the changes as “a small price to pay” to keep the nation safe.

By Sunday evening, officials said nearly all of those who had been detained were free or soon would be, but the status of some travelers was unclear. The released included nine people held at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings’ office said.

The people affected included a woman who was sent back to Saudi Arabia after traveling to Indiana to care for her cancer-stricken mother; a family physician who has lived in the U.S. for two decades who was held for nine hours; and a Minneapolis woman about to become a U.S. citizen who was questioned for 12 hours.

Meanwhile, protests continued across the country Sunday, from smaller airports such as Rapid City Regional Airport in South Dakota to one of the nation’s busiest, Hartfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

Demonstrations first erupted Saturday, a day after Trump signed the order banning travel to the U.S. by citizens of Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia or Yemen. The president also suspended the U.S. refugee program for four months.

CHICAGO – The night before Donald Trump’s inauguration, five environmental lawyers filed a federal court brief defending an Obama administration clean-water rule that the new president and his Republican allies have targeted for elimination, considering it burdensome to landowners.

The move served as a warning that environmentalists, facing a hostile administration and a Republican-dominated Congress, are prepared to battle in court against what they fear will be a wave of unfavorable policies concerning climate change, wildlife protection, federal lands and pollution.

Advocacy groups nationwide are hiring more staff lawyers. They’re coordinating with private attorneys and firms that have volunteered to help. They’re reviewing statutes, setting priorities and seeking donations.

“It’s going to be all-out war,” Vermont Law School professor Patrick Parenteau said. “If you’re an environmentalist or conservationist, this is indeed a scary time.”

Trump’s first week in office only heightened their anxieties. He moved

endangered species list.

“They’ve wasted no time in doing bad things,” said Pat Gallagher, director of the Sierra Club’s 50-member legal team, which he said is likely to grow as environmentalists increasingly regard the courts as their best option, even though success there is far from certain.

The Department of Justice, which represents the federal government in environmental lawsuits, declined to comment while the White House did not respond to emails seeking comment. Doug Ericksen, communications director for Trump’s transition team at EPA, said of the environmentalists that he’s “not sure what they think they’re preparing for” but suspects they are stoking fear of Trump as a fundraising tool.

Jim Burling, litigation director for the Pacific Legal Foundation, a nonprofit property rights group that sues regulators on behalf of businesses and landowners, also contended environmental groups were exaggerating the Trump administration’s threat for political and financial gain.

The government bureaucracy is entrenched, Burling said, and “who happens to occupy the White House hasn’t made that much difference.”

Put your heart and soul in it On a fairly regular basis back in the day, state Sen. Barack Obama would walk up to the Senate press box and bum cigarettes off me. That was when people could smoke in the Senate chambers and back when both of us smoked.

Now, we both chew nicotine gum and smoking on the Senate floor is strictly forbidden.

Obama was mainly an OPC smoker, meaning “other peoples’ cigarettes.” I’d usually give him a little grief about how maybe he should buy his own pack once in a while, but I never denied his request unless I was almost out. He’d always take the cigarette to a room in the back of the chamber, never seeming to smoke at his desk like others did.

One day as I was wandering through the Statehouse near his office, Obama hollered out my name and asked me to come in and join him. I presumed he wanted to bum yet another cigarette and I was right.

I tossed my pack on his desk and he took one out, lit it and we made a little small talk.

Honestly, I didn’t much care for the guy in those days. He hadn’t yet done a lot of real work, or built strong relationships with fellow legislators by then, particularly with members of the Senate Black Caucus. And by the time of our little chat, he’d gotten way ahead of himself by challenging Congressman Bobby Rush in the 2000 Democratic primary and losing badly.

I was interviewed by the Chicago Reader newspaper during that campaign. I told the reporter that Sen. Obama was “a very intelligent man” who has “some really good ideas,” and would “probably make a pretty good congressman.” But I also pointed out that he hadn’t had a lot of success in Springfield and speculated that it could be “because he places himself above everybody. He likes people to know he went to Harvard.”

I got a phone call from Obama after that story was published. He was stung by my comments. I tried to point out the positive things I said, but that didn’t work. At the end of our conversation, we agreed to start talking more often, which may have been why he called me into his office that day.

We had finished our cigarettes and I remember getting up to leave. It’s not like he knew any hot inside information that I could use in my Capitol

Obama then stunned me by asking a question that I never in a million years would’ve anticipated: What would I think of him running for U.S. Senate in 2004?

His question seemed so ... presumptuous. Rush had just cleaned his clock by a 30-point margin, I reminded Obama. If he ran for statewide office and lost, he’d be finished, washed up, out of the game for good. “There is still some honor to serving in the Illinois Senate,” I gently scolded him.

But Obama said he was getting heat from the home front. His Springfield duties were preventing him from making a decent living as an attorney, so he either had to move up to a much higher office or get out of politics and go make some real money.

I couldn’t argue with that logic, but I suggested that maybe he stop using “Barack” and call himself “Barry” or something. He said that’s what his friends called him when he was growing up, but said he wanted to stick to his given name. I made some sort of joke about Irishing up his last name with an apostrophe after the “O” and using green yard signs. Had I known at the time that his middle name was “Hussein,” I’m sure I would’ve made some sort of inappropriate joke.

I tell this story whenever somebody asks me for advice about whether to run for higher office in order to explain why I no longer provide that sort of counsel. I mean, I actually told a future President of the United States to not be so darned ambitious.

It was not my proudest moment.

Nowadays, I just say, “What do you really want to do?” And if they can answer that question, I urge them to put their entire heart and soul into the effort.

It works out much better that way – for them and for me.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR The election should bring shame to both parties

To the Editor: We have completed our national election and the language and accusations used by many members of all parties was shameful. This type of conduct is not how we as Americans should conduct ourselves. We should be embarrassed and apologetic.

This is not what we should demonstrate to people in our country and other countries. As bad as our shameful actions may have been, shameful silence is even worse.

I haven’t heard most members of Congress come out publicly and criticize members of all parties for their actions and start the dialogue for a public apology. Recently, President Obama and his administration again not only snubbed, due to mistaken ideology and/or politics, and tried to pull the rug out from under Israel by not vetoing the UN sanctions, but rather abstaining.

This action is shameful, but your public silence is shameful and unacceptable. All members of Congress should have publicly protested this action and criticized the administration. If all of you can’t and/or won’t break your shameful silence and publicly protest the conduct of all who ran in the recent election, the lack of support for our only Mideast friend, Israel, then you all should resign immediately.

The hidden agenda of global warming

To the Editor: The hidden agenda behind global warm-

ing is to convince the world that global warming is real and that man is causing it, which cannot be 100 percent proven and is just a theory, as evolution was. Even if the planet is warming, no one really understands why.

The whole idea behind this is to push the narrative of how your carbon footprint hurts the planet and then they begin to measure your energy consumption and send you utility statements comparing your consumption against your neighbors.

Once it is determined that you use too much energy, the plan is that you will be penalized and have to purchase additional carbon credits to make up for your excessive use. Others will get carbon credits because they are using wind and solar and generating more power than they need, and can then sell their excess power as carbon credits.

The powers on high that developed this little scam try to keep the details well hidden and I believe they stand to profit by purchasing and selling carbon credits and investing in renewable energy such as wind and solar, which is being forced upon us. I would venture to say that there are some in the scientific community that receive grants from the powers on high to fund their projects. If these were to speak out against global warming, they may risk losing their funding and may be blacklisted and ridiculed.

I would suggest that those worried about global warming and climate change should read Psalms 104:9 and Genesis 8:22.

“The Padres gave up on [Anthony] Rizzo, which was ridiculous. He is a special guy and a great defender, which is underrated. [Javy] Baez, I can’t stand him, but he’s really good.

“David Ross is special. I’d pay him $10 million right now to come out of retirement and play with the Brewers. [Kris] Bryant is one of the best players in the game. [Kyle] Schwarber is impressive. He just looks like he grew up in Joliet [which he didn’t].

John Jay is the ultimate pickup for them this offseason. He is a team guy.”

Knudsen and Blaylock ran respective times of 8:19.74 and 8:29.02 in the 3K, good for the two fastest paces recorded by NAIA runners this winter.

Senior Joey Santillo (Minooka) met the national provisional standard with an 8:40.28 clip.

Two other USF runners turned in automatic-qualifying performances.

Junior Jordan Duncan qualified with his time of 6.87 seconds in the 60-me-

ter dash, seventh-fastest in the NAIA this year, while junior John Principato (Plainfield Central) qualified with a 1:55.00 pace in the 800-meter run.

Murphy recalled breaking into college coaching at Notre Dame.

“I was 27 years old when I got the Notre Dame job in 1987,” he said. “I had two scholarships. Notre Dame hadn’t beaten a Big Ten team in 20 years.

That’s where they were.

“The first day I’m at the Athletic and Convocation Center. My office is what seemed like a few miles on the other side of the campus. That’s how big baseball was. I got a card from Notre Dame football – congratulations and best wishes from Coach [Lou] Holtz and staff.

“So I’m in the bathroom, doing what guys do there, and who walks in but Lou Holtz. I’m feeling pretty good – I’m there doing my thing with Lou Holtz.

He tells me we got this wide receiver/ flanker guy named Tim Brown that we are going to get the ball to.

“Then when we’re finished and leaving the bathroom, he says to me, ‘So, son, how are your courses going here?’ ”

Murphy mentioned meeting Kipnis, a Glenbrook North graduate, at Arizona State.

“Jason Kipnis was out of baseball,” he said. “Kentucky had kicked him out. He came to Arizona State looking to play. I told him, ‘I’ll give you a books scholarship,’ which is like a dollar because most classes are online. He tore it up for us.”

One of the toughest losses in Murphy’s amateur career came when Arizona State lost to Texas in the game to go to the College World Series in 2009.

“We had gone ahead 3-2 in the top of the 11th, and they hit two homers in the bottom of the 11th off [Mitchell] Lambson. I went straight to Lambson and told him, ‘This is going to make you tougher.’ And now, nine years later, he will be in spring training with the Brewers.”

It is interesting how baseball gods work sometime.

TINLEY PARK – One program is trying to do something for the first time, while the other is hoping to win at finals for the third time in four years.

The competitive cheerleading teams from Reed-Custer and Lincoln-Way East both won Saturday at the Andrew Sectional. It was the second sectional title for each, with the Comets following up on last year’s effort and the Griffins capturing their initial large-team sectional and first since 2006.

But now the squads have different goals, with East looking to achieve top honors again, as it did in 2014 and 2015, while Reed-Custer seeks its first trophy in the sport.

The Griffins’ 92.09 was the second-highest total in the state. It provides a big boost as the team prepares for this weekend’s finals in Bloomington.

“It was amazing to watch since we hadn’t hit a routine this year, so it was really nice to get out and hit, especially for their confidence going into state,” Griffins co-coach Jayson Polad said. “Their level of excitement and passion on the floor really showed through, and it’s going to be a really good springboard going into state.

“This team is just so much fun.

They have fun with each other and a love for each other, and every day that we’re in practice, they really love being there. That’s an ingredient that you can put on the floor that shows through and really helps to set them apart.”

The members of the Griffins’ squad are Rylie Bolsoni, Maddie Brokop, Lauren Bruns, Ally Chavez, Cassie Craig, Kaylee Hasenbank, Kelly Hausner, Claire Hawkinson, Kaleb Hong, Nicole Humenik, Megan Hussey, Taylor Johnson, Karley Kalchbrenner, Christa Mack, Hailey Maksymiak, Kaitlyn Moylan, Megan Moylan, Sam Myers, Amber Pluzycki, Nicole Schipiour, Maddie Smith, Olivia Sterchele, Payton Wallace, Lauren Williams and Julia Zelenika.

“It was a difficult situation last year with a legality keeping us out of the competition, but those are things that you have to put behind, and you have to persevere,” East co-coach Julianne Polad said. “Their motivation and willingness to strive for success and everything that we work hard for has really been the key to our overall accomplishment.

The Comets’ 84.76 total was second-best in the small-team division.

Now the squad of Laura Collins, Karen Gonski, Abby Hess, Lily Kilpatrick, Destanie Nacey, Morgan Peters, Macy Pfiefer, Cailyn Porterfield, Abbi Smith, Kiley Terry and Skylar Windsor hopes that a similar performance leads to a spot on the awards stand.

“We want to continue the energy,” Comets coach Nicole Faletti said.

“We don’t want the sectional to define our season, we want to end on a good note, so hopefully we’ll continue our momentum. Last year we

got comfortable, and we can’t do that this year.

“It’s actually been a trying year for us. We have been battling ups and downs all season, and luckily we’re

peaking at the right time. We hadn’t competed in the same routine twice except for now. These girls know how to work through things and are really good at that.”

Federer beats Nadal in epic final to win 18th major

The Associated Press MELBOURNE, Australia – So here was Roger Federer, down a break in the fifth set in a Grand Slam final.

Across the net was his nemesis, Rafael Nadal, the left-handed Spaniard he hadn’t been able to beat in a major final in almost a decade.

The 35-year-old father of four was back in his first tour-level tournament after six months off letting his injured left knee recover, and he hadn’t won any of the big four events in tennis since Wimbledon 2012. Nadal was returning from injury, too, and somehow the pair had renewed the Roger-Rafa rivalry in a throwback Australian Open final that transcended sport.

At that moment, an 18th Grand Slam title didn’t feature in Federer’s thinking.

Don’t play the player, he reminded himself, just play the ball. Attack the serve.

With that, Federer recovered the break, and seized momentum in a roll of winning 10 consecutive points that helped propel him to a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 win Sunday.

His fifth Australian title extended his buffer to four atop the list of alltime Grand Slam champions. Nadal remained tied with Pete Sampras in second place with 14.

“That’s what I see. The last problem is the slam count – honestly, it doesn’t matter.”

Federer had lost six of the previous eight Grand Slam finals he’d played

against Nadal and was 11-23 in their career meetings. His last win over Nadal in a major final was at Wimbledon in 2007.

“It remains for me the ultimate challenge to play against him,” Federer said. “It’s super sweet, because I haven’t beaten him a Grand Slam final for a long time now.

“This one means a lot to me because he’s caused me problems over the years.”

With big wins come big celebrations, Federer said. “We’re going to party like rock stars tonight.”

By winning in Melbourne, where he first played in 2000 and where he kicked off his long reign at No. 1 with the title in 2004, he became the oldest man since Ken Rosewall in 1972 to win a slam.

Federer had lost five semifinals in Australia since winning his previous title here in 2010. He’d lost three major finals since winning that last Grand Slam in 2012. He hadn’t played Nadal in a major final since losing at the French Open in ’11.

After twice rallying from a set down, Nadal was a break up in the fifth but couldn’t hang on to become the first man in the Open era to win each of the four majors twice. Instead, Federer became the first man in the Open era to win three of Grand Slam events at least five times (7 Wimbledon titles, 5 U.S. Opens, 5 Australian Opens and 1 French Open).

“The magnitude of this match is going to feel different. I can’t compare this one with any other one except for maybe the French Open in ’09,” Federer said. “I waited for the French Open, I tried, I fought. I tried again and failed. Eventually I made it. This feels similar, yeah.”

McIntosh, surging Northwestern top Indiana, 68-55 EVANSTON – Bryant McIntosh had 21 points and eight assists, leading surging Northwestern to a 68-55 victory over Indiana on Sunday.

The Wildcats (18-4, 7-2) held the Hoosiers to 32 percent shooting in their sixth consecutive victory. It’s their longest Big Ten win streak since the 193233 team matched a school record with seven in a row, and their 7-2 start in conference play is their best since the 1937-38 season.

Heady stuff for a program that has never made it to the NCAA Tournament. But it sure looks as if this might be the year for the Wildcats.

Indiana (14-8, 4-5) committed 13 turnovers while playing without leading scorer James Blackmon Jr., who got hurt during Thursday night’s 9060 loss at Michigan. The school announced Saturday the junior guard is out indefinitely with a lower leg injury.

Blackmon, who is averaging 17.6

points, joins an impressive list of hurt Hoosiers, with forwards Collin Hartman and OG Anunoby already shelved by knee injuries.

Northwestern missed its first seven shots and fell behind 10-1 before grabbing control with a 20-2 run. Sanjay Lumpkin had a steal and a dunk, and Nathan Taphorn scored five straight points to make it 21-12 with 7:49 left.

The Wildcats were never threatened again. They led 35-23 at the break, and McIntosh’s 3-pointer stretched the advantage to 56-38 with 7:28 left.

Thomas Bryant matched a career high with 23 points and also grabbed 12 rebounds for Indiana, which has split its past six games. Robert Johnson added 12 points on 4-for-13 shooting.

Nebraska 83, No. 20 Purdue 80: At Lincoln, Neb., Michael Jacobson’s putback with 42 seconds left gave Nebraska the lead, and the Cornhuskers made 4 of 6

free throws the rest of the way to hold off Purdue.

Reserve Jack McVeigh matched his season high with 21 points, and reserve Jeriah Horne had 16 points for the Huskers (10-11, 4-5 Big Ten). They ended a five-game losing streak.

Dakota Mathias made 5 of 7 3-pointers and scored 19 points to lead Purdue (17-5, 6-3), which lost for the first time in four games. Carsen Edwards had 16 points, and Caleb Swanigan had 14 points and 14 rebounds.

The Huskers missed 11 of their first 15 shots after halftime, allowing Purdue to wipe out their 39-33 halftime lead. They clawed back to take the lead for good after Jacobson stole the ball from Swanigan and was there to put back McVeigh’s missed 3-pointer to put the Huskers up 79-78.

Michigan St. 70, Michigan 62: At East Lansing, Mich., Michigan State had a

trio of freshmen play like savvy and talented veterans in their first game against Michigan Miles Bridges had 15 points and 13 rebounds, Cassius Winston scored 16 and Nick Ward added 13 points to lead the Spartans in a win over the Wolverines.

“We knew the intensity level was going to be higher than any other game,” Bridges said. “We just had to stay poised, keep our calm and just continue to do what we do.”

Michigan State (13-9, 5-4 Big Ten) won its fifth straight game in the series and ended a three-game losing streak this season, giving its NCAA Tournament hopes a boost.

The Wolverines (14-8, 4-5) had won two straight and three of four, improving its chances of getting off the bubble and into the NCAA Tournament.

Olé! Jon Rahm breaks through with thrilling back 9 at Torrey

SAN DIEGO – His heart was beating so fast that Jon Rahm couldn’t think as he studied the 60 feet from his golf ball on the back fringe to the cup at the bottom of the slope on the 18th hole at Torrey Pines.

The 22-year-old from Spain had enough wits to seek advice from his caddie, Adam Hayes, who had seen this putt before.

The idea was to get to the slope.

Rahm did better than that.

He sent it off to the left and made sure it reached the crest, then watched it peel off to the right and start tracking back to the left until it disappeared into the hole on the final turn for an eagle , the winning shot Sunday at the Farmers Insurance Open and one he won’t forget.

“I never thought it was going to be for eagle from 60 feet, especially at Torrey Pines, but the fact that it went in is just incredible,” Rahm said after his three-shot victory. “The emotion just overwhelmed me. But man, that was a satisfying feeling.”

The tournament began by celebrating the return of 41-year-old Tiger

Woods. It ended with a 22-year-old who left Spain for Arizona State, was the top college player his final two years and wasted no time showing off his

knack for big moments.

He earned a PGA Tour card in just four tournaments after leaving college. He won in his 12th start as a pro.

Rahm made two eagles over his final six holes and shot 30 on the back nine, breaking loose from a leaderboard that was more crowded than the California freeways. Nine players had at least a share of the lead at some point during the sunny final round along the Pacific bluffs.

And then it became a one-man show.

“Through 13, I was right there in the mix. I was tied for the lead,” Patrick Rodgers said. “I thought if I could get two more (birdies) coming in, I probably would have the trophy outright. And by the time I stepped up on 16 tee, I was four behind. I was out of the tournament by then.”

Rahm closed with a 7-under 65 for a three-shot victory over Charles Howell III (68) and C.T. Pan of Taiwan, who closed with a 70. Brandt Snedeker and Rodgers, tied for the lead going into the final round, fell back with bogeys they couldn’t afford.

Rahm might have won for the first time, though this was hardly a surprise.

CHICAGO – Jimmy Butler scored 28 points and Robin Lopez added a season-high 21 points and had 10 rebounds as the Bulls defeated the Philadelphia 76ers, 121-108, on Sunday night.

After a week of tension, the Bulls bounced back from consecutive home defeats to Atlanta and Miami despite blowing a 20-point lead.

Ersan Ilyasova scored a season-high 31 points for Philadelphia, and Robert Covington added 21 points and a season-high 12 rebounds. The 76ers have lost 12 straight to the Bulls.

The 76ers played without Joel Embiid, who stayed in Philadelphia as he rested with a left knee contusion. Embiid is day-to-day.

Butler and Dwyane Wade returned to the starting lineup after being benched as starters in Friday’s blowout loss to the Heat. Wade and Butler were critical of teammates after they blew a late double-digit lead in a loss to the Hawks on Wednesday. Rajon Rondo responded to his teammates’ criticism on

an Instagram post on Thursday, taking multiple shots at the team leadership.

Wade, Butler and Rondo all were fined by the Bulls.

After a team meeting, Butler and the Bulls had one of their worst performances of the season against Miami.

Butler struggled off the bench, scoring just three points on 1-of-13 shooting.

Against the 76ers, Butler was more aggressive, getting to the free-throw line and setting up his teammates. He had seven assists and eight rebounds.

The Bulls closed out the first quarter with a 13-0 run. Rondo made a pass that traveled three-quarters of the court to Nikola Mirotic to put the Bulls up, 37-23, at the end of the quarter. They extended their lead to 20 early in the second quarter.

The 76ers got the lead down to six at one point in the second quarter, and came back from the 20-point deficit in the third. T.J. McConnell had back-tobaskets to tie it at 79. Butler answered for the Bulls, making a jumper and then, on the defensive side, stole a pass and finished with a dunk to give the Bulls a 92-83 lead late in the third quarter.

LOS ANGELES – Wayne Simmonds’ first All-Star weekend after a nine-year NHL career was strange enough. Having Wayne Gretzky for a coach made it even more surreal.

And after he scored the tiebreaking goal to become the All-Star Game MVP in his former home city, the Philadelphia forward could only think of one word for his West Coast trip.

“Weird,” Simmonds said with a grin.

Indeed, the 3-on-3 format of this revamped midseason showcase can lead to weird hockey. It also allows the game’s biggest stars to create moments of offensive beauty, and Simmonds’ winner with Taylor Hall certainly qualified.

Simmonds completed his hat trick with 4:58 to play, and fill-in coach Gretzky led the Metropolitan Division to a 4-3 victory over the Pacific Division on Sunday in the final match of the 62nd NHL All-Star Game.

Columbus’ Cam Atkinson scored the tying goal five seconds earlier for the Metropolitans in the four-team divisional tournament format of wide-open hockey introduced to this talent-laden exhibition last season.

Washington goalie Braden Holtby blanked the Pacific over the final 10 minutes to secure the win for his 11man bunch, which will split a $1 million prize.

Simmonds won the truck awarded to the game’s MVP after he put the Metropolitans ahead with a clever goal. Right off the faceoff following Atkinson’s goal, Simmonds playfully flicked the helmet of Drew Doughty, his former Los Angeles teammate, to distract the Norris Trophy-winning

defenseman. Simmonds then skated around him and converted a pass from New Jersey’s Hall.

“I just took off,” Simmonds said. “I said to Hallsy before the game, ‘I’m going to drive back-door on one of these plays, probably about a foot from the net. Just hit me with the puck. Hopefully, I can put it in.’ It’s exactly what we spoke about.”

Simmonds is still well-liked in LA nearly six years after he was traded to Philadelphia in a deal for Mike Richards. He’s also in the middle of a potential career year with the Flyers after scoring 38 points in their first 50 games.

“You leave a place, you don’t expect to come back and get all the cheers as I did today,” Simmonds said. “But I must have did something right when I was here. I know I had a lot of die-hard fans here, and I really appreciate those people. They made me feel really good today.”

Simmonds and Atkinson, a late addition to the team, scored three goals apiece.

But the game was secondary when the NHL’s best gathered on a 72-degree day in Hollywood. A sellout crowd at Staples Center cheered the first AllStar Game for Connor McDavid, Auston Matthews, Patrik Laine and a host of young talent.

The All-Stars got an additional thrill before the game when roughly half of the 100 greatest players in NHL history lined up on the ice and shook hands with the current players during introductions. The greats then dropped a ceremonial first puck for each of the 44 All-Stars.

It was also just the second All-Star appearance by Sidney Crosby, who hadn’t been healthy for the game since 2007.

Health benefits found in nuts Dear Doctor: Will eating nuts really reduce my risk of heart disease, cancer and other diseases, which a new study has suggested? If so, how many should I be eating?

Dear Reader: Nuts are fruits. They consist of a hard shell and an edible seed.

To answer your question, I’ll use the definition of nuts to refer to the varieties we typically eat, although some, like the peanut, are not truly nuts. Nuts are a good source of fiber and contain antioxidants such as vitamin E, healthy polyunsaturated fats and magnesium. These aspects of nuts could reduce the risk of vascular disease and cancer and possibly rates of diabetes.

A 2013 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine looked at nut intake per week among both male and female health professionals. The researchers followed 173,000 people for a period of 30 years and looked at how many of those people died. They found a marked decrease in death rates among those study participants who ate nuts. They also found the benefit was dose-dependent, meaning the more nuts people ate a week, the smaller their chance of death during the study period. Compared to people who rarely ate nuts, those who ate nuts once a week had an 11 percent decrease in death rate, while those who ate nuts daily had a 20 percent decrease in death rate.

A much larger recent study, published in the journal BMC Medicine, combined multiple studies and looked at rates of death from heart attacks, strokes and cancer. The studies were from the United States, Europe, Asia and Australia and included a total of more than 819,000 participants. The study quantified the benefits of nuts by the number of servings a day.

ASK THE DOCTORS Robert Ashley The study authors found a 19 percent decrease in death rates among people who were high nut consumers compared to people who were low nut consumers, with a 24 percent decrease in heart disease, an 11 percent decrease in stroke and an 18 percent decrease in cancer. The authors also found the greatest benefit was seen among those who consumed at least 15 grams to 20 grams of nuts five or six days a week. These results appear to support the findings in the New England Journal study.

So how many nuts is 15 to 20 grams?

About 14 almonds, four Brazil nuts, 11 cashews, 12 hazelnuts, nine walnut halves, 29 pistachios and 18 peanuts.

That’s not a lot. I’m not suggesting you precisely count the number of nuts that you eat at any given time, but I would suggest you eat nuts frequently, perhaps as a snack. I have them on my desk at work. They’re much better for you than the unhealthy, high-sugar, high-carbohydrate snacks that can lead to obesity, diabetes and higher death rates. Nuts are high-energy snacks that provide a more sustained suppression of hunger than sugary snacks.

If you don’t eat nuts already, start slowly. You may like some more than others, and you may tolerate some better than others. In any case, have some nuts; they’re good for you.

Dear Abby: I DEAR ABBY feel like a terrible wife when my Jeanne husband gets Phillips sick – not majorly sick, but with a run-of-the-mill cold. Men can be terrible babies when they are sick. It is a cold. He’s not dying. I happen to have a cold right now, and I am functioning just fine and not moaning and groaning about it.

Also, I am not his mother. When he whines, I shut down or become touchy and crabby. If he doesn’t whine, I’m happy to take care of him, but I can’t take the time during the day to lie in bed with him (I work from home, so I am accessible to him) to keep him warm. I can’t stay up until midnight rubbing his back, and I cannot tolerate the sappy whining.

I made him aware of my disdain for the way sick men behave a number of years ago, but he still acts like the world is ending when he has a cold. How do I tend to him without feeling resentful? – Not His Mother Dear Not His Mother: Cold season is in full swing now. Your husband didn’t catch one on purpose. When people feel fragile they need TLC, and he is no exception.

Here’s how to “tend” to him: Keep a supply of chicken soup on hand, and insist he keep drinking it to stay hydrated. (Chicken soup has magical curative powers.) If he has a headache, there are over-the-counter meds he can take, so suggest it when he complains. While you’re at the pharmacy, buy a heating pad and an extension cord for him so you can keep working if he has the chills. (You probably caught his cold while you were cuddling.) Sanitize any surface he may have touched. Even if you aren’t feeling sympathetic, try to appear as if you are – and keep your sense of humor. A final suggestion: Sleep apart until he’s no longer contagious, which may give him an incentive to recover faster.

Dear Abby: Every year, my adult siblings and mother exchange Christmas gifts. Since my husband died in 2012, my sister has told me she has made a gift in our name to the Muscular Dystrophy Association. She also makes a production of telling this to my children.

Abby, the MDA sends the person in whose name a donation has been made a notification about it, but we have never received a notice of any kind from them. When I contacted them and asked, I was told a donation was never received.

I always give my sister an expensive gift. After finding out what has been going on, I am really upset. Is this acceptable? I have no problem with not exchanging gifts, but this seems to be a way to receive without giving. – Hurt In Georgia Dear Hurt: Lying is not acceptable, and your sister should be ashamed of herself if that’s what has been going on. Tell her that, having received no notification from the MDA acknowledging her donation, you contacted them to ask why and were “shocked” to hear no donation had been made. If she can’t produce proof of payment, from now on agree to exchange Christmas cards – if you’re still speaking.

Here are the answers to the first two questions in my competition.

1. South is in six spades. West leads the club king. Declarer puts up dummy’s ace, but East ruffs and returns a trump. When West discards a club, how should South continue?

South has 12 top tricks: five spades (East’s club ruff cost his natural trump trick), three hearts and four diamonds. However, he cannot draw trumps, because he won’t have a dummy entry left.

West cannot have seven diamonds. So, after winning the second trick in hand, cash the diamond king.

If West discards, take the diamond queen, play a spade to the jack and cash the diamond winners. When both opponents follow suit, cash the heart ace. If West discards, cash the other top hearts, ruff a heart in the dummy, cash the spade jack, ruff a club to hand, draw trumps and take the last two tricks in diamonds.

If West follows to the heart ace, cash the diamond queen. If West discards, continue as above. Here, though, he follows suit. Now cash the heart king. When West pitches, cash the heart queen, ruff a heart low, take the spade jack and diamond ace (discarding your last heart) and claim.

2. Supply a sequence after South opens two clubs, and West overcalls five clubs.

This depends on partnership agreement. The “standard” method is that double by North warns of a very bad hand and pass is encouraging. In my sequence, South cue-bids six clubs to show at least 5-5 in two suits, and the auction ends in seven spades by North! It’s hard to reach seven no-trump.
