Rolling Meadows police investigating cold case at Joliet-area residence

Police searched a Joliet-area home for hours Wednesday looking for the remains of a Rolling Meadows man who disappeared 41 years ago.

The missing man was the college roommate of Russel Smrekar, a Joliet man who confessed to the killing while he was dying in prison while serving a sentence for two other murders.

Smrekar, however, did not tell police where Michael Mansfield’s body was.

Police were hoping to find him in a plain, gray ranch house at 1113 Barber Lane, an unincorporated area in the middle of Joliet’s West Side.

Mansfield’s body apparently was not found Wednesday. The crime scene remained active as of 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Beth Fox said she was surprised to see the amount of activity mid-day Wednesday as she drove past the Joliet area home about two blocks from her own.

“I saw the yellow tape and all the cars on the street. I thought they were having an estate sale,” she said.

Fox said she drove back to take a closer look after noticing the police vehicles.

“There were guys in those white hazmat suits,” she said. “They had about three tents set up in the back.”

Detectives are examining the home for the possibility that evidence or the remains of Mansfield may be located there, according to a Rolling Meadows Police Department news release. Rolling Meadows police are working in conjunction with the Cook County Major Case Assistance Team, with the logistical assistance of the Will County Sheriff’s Office.

The news release stated more details regarding the investigation would be released at a later date.

Smrekar confessed in 2011 that he had killed Mansfield, who was his college roommate.

Smrekar was serving a sentence at the time of 200 to 600 years for the murders of two people, who, like Mansfield,

The murders have been the subject of two books as well as many news reports.

Mansfield was on break when he disappeared from his Rolling Meadows home Dec. 31, 1975, and was never seen again. He was to testify six days later against Smrekar, who was accused of stealing a guitar and some records from a dorm room.

They were students at Lincoln College in Lincoln.

When Rolling Meadows detectives met with Smrekar as he was suffering from a terminal illness, he confessed to the murders of both Mansfield and Ruth Martin, a witness in another case who had disappeared, according to a report in the Chicago Sun-Times.

At the time of his confession, Smrekar did not provide information about the location of Mansfield’s body.

Martin of Lincoln was involved in the case for which Smrekar was convicted.

She was to testify against Smrekar in a case involving the theft of two steaks from a grocery store in October 1975.

Smrekar was convicted of the murder of Jay and Robin Fry at their Lincoln home. They also were witnesses to the steak theft.

Will County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer said Rolling Meadows police contacted Will County on Tuesday to inform them they’d be searching the property Wednesday for a cold case investigation.

The property at Barber Lane has a separate garage set behind the house.

A wooded lot and a small creek are next door. Police had set up several tarps and a tent Wednesday afternoon between the two buildings.

Police vehicles from Will and Cook counties were at the scene. A large van marked Major Case Assistant Team was also parked at the home. Several unmarked cars were at the home as well.

Will County Coroner Patrick O’Neil said he has not been notified of any bodies found at the location.

“Definitely, if there was a body found and it was in our county, we would have to be contacted,” O’Neil said.

Rauner praises ongoing budget work, accomplishments

kcraver@shawmedia.com Gov. Bruce Rauner took a more optimistic tone in this year’s State of the State address, but he said lawmakers need to work with him to resolve a budget impasse that has lasted a year and a half.

His address Wednesday afternoon before a joint session of the General Assembly – the Republican’s third since taking office – started with a sense of hope and highlighted accomplishments in making Illinois a better place. But he said both sides have to work together to reverse Illinois’ sagging fortunes.

Rauner’s 35-minute address comes as the leaders of the Illinois Senate craft a “grand compromise” budget deal that includes tax increases in exchange for some reforms. The evolving compromise package of 13 bills did not go to vote in the Senate on Wednesday as leaders had originally hoped.

“We have big challenges, and like many of you, I’m frustrated by the slow pace of change in Springfield,” Rauner said. “But with great challenge comes great opportunity. By working together, we can overcome any obstacle.”

Rauner briefly went off script to thank the Senate for working on a plan, although he did not indicate whether he will support the 13-bill package being teed up in the Senate. He has maintained that he will not approve any sort

friendly to job creation and taxpayers.

“Please don’t give up. Please keep

working. The people of Illinois need you to succeed,” Rauner said.

Rauner spent much of his speech listing accomplishments such as ethics reform and increased government transparency; “innovative” new contracts with 20 state government employee unions; criminal justice reform; and increased education funding.

However, Rauner said the state “is failing to be compassionate because we are failing to be competitive,” citing the budget impasse’s devastating effect on social services and the state’s ongoing loss of people and jobs to other states.

Illinois for the past two years has led the nation in out-migration, according to U.S. Census estimates.

The lack of a budget is one of many problems Illinois faces. Its credit rating is the lowest of all 50 states, and it is expected to be lowered again if no budget deal materializes. State government has an $11 billion backlog of unpaid bills, and an unfunded pension liability of at least $130 billion – 20 percent of general fund spending now goes to pay state retirees.

Rauner again implored lawmakers to put constitutional amendments to voters to impose term limits on elected officials and reform the way that legislative districts are redrawn by taking the responsibility out of lawmakers’ hands.

Area legislators react to Rauner’s State of the State address

The Herald-News spoke to area legislators to gauge their reactions to the speech.

State Sen. Pat McGuire, D-Joliet, said he was “cheered” by Rauner’s encouragement of the bipartisan deal being negotiated by Senate President John Cullerton, D-Chicago, and state Sen. Christine Radogno, R-Lemont, the Republican Senate leader.

Described as a “grand bargain” that has been in the works since the veto session, McGuire said the deal

includes 13 bills aimed at reaching a balanced budget. It’s a blend of Republican and Democrat initiatives.

“But for the compromise to pass, the governor needs to put actions behind his words as leader of the Republican Party,” McGuire said, adding that Rauner could “use his influence” on Republican state legislators.

State Rep. Mark Batinick, R-Plainfield, said he agreed with the optimistic tone of Rauner’s speech.

“The crazy part is – when being entrenched in everything – you see all our problems are fixable,” Batinick said. “There are fundamental things you can’t change and take away from Illinoisans.”

For too long, he said, legislators

have not been fostering growth in the state.

“People don’t want to move to northwest Indiana. They don’t want to move to other Midwest states,” Batinick said.

State Rep. Larry Walsh Jr., D-Elwood, said he was disappointed Rauner took “13 to 15 minutes” to get to the actual problem.

“Which is the lack of a budget the last 19 months,” Walsh said.

“He highlighted a bunch of different things we accomplished together when we work on issues rather than politics and ideology. If we can sit down and get away from ideologies, then I

New Rialto board tackles old bills

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The new Rialto Square Theatre board got right to business Wednesday at its first meeting, addressing the nearly $600,000 backlog in bills.

The Rialto does not have the money yet. But board Chairman Robert Filotto said after the meeting that he expects the bills will be paid with a $600,000 loan from the foundation that raises money for the theater.

“I think it’s the intent of the board that we move fairly quickly on the payment issues, especially with the local vendors,” Filotto said as the board discussed the old bills during the meeting.

New Vice Chairman Jeff Pierson added that local companies should get full payment.

“Our local people need to be paid in full and not negotiated down,” Pierson said.

Pierson made his comment after Finance Director Dale Evans advised the board that it could consider negotiating bills, although the Rialto was prohibited by state law from filing for bankruptcy.

Board members were asking Evans about the backlog of bills, which now stand at $597,000.

Evans said he had sent vendors, whom he described as “very patient,” a letter last year describing the Rialto’s financial situation. The letter in part told vendors that the Rialto cannot file for bankruptcy and “we recognize our obligations,” Evans told the board.

“That doesn’t mean that you’re not able to negotiate with those vendors,” he said.

That may not be an issue if the Rialto is able to get the foundation loan that Filotto described.

“It could be a good six weeks off, unfortunately,” Filotto said after a closed session, which apparently involved discussion of the potential foundation loan.

“That’s not ready to go. We’ve got some hurdles to overcome,” Filotto said.

The Rialto Square Theatre Foundation will have to go to Will County Circuit Court to seek a judge’s approval to use $600,000 from the principal of an endowment fund to pay the theater’s bills, he said.

Typically, only the interest generated by an endowment fund can be used.

But the foundation plans to make a case for using the principal because of the financial situation the Rialto faces.

Rialto and foundation officials have

repeatedly said that the foundation was trying to pay off the old bills, but they have not discussed how it would be done.

Foundation President Tricia Simpson would not comment Wednesday when asked about the loan.

Filotto said the Rialto would have to pay the loan back at the rate of $50,000 a year.

VenuWorks contract

The board put off a vote on a fiveyear contract proposed by VenuWorks, saying it needed more time to review the 25-page document.

VenuWorks now has a three-month contract through March to continue operating as the management company for the Rialto. But at least a one-year contract with a management company must be in place before the Rialto begins receiving funds from the city of Joliet this year.

Freitag accepts role as County Board chief of staff

mmallory@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Will County Board member Ragan Freitag, R-Wilmington, has accepted an offer to become the board’s chief of staff.

She will take over a vacancy created in December when former Chief of Staff Bruce Friefeld retired after 28 years in different county Ragan Freitag roles.

Freitag said her tentative start date is March 1. As a practicing attorney, she said her current position is not a job in which an employee can give two weeks’ notice and drop everything. She’s been wrapping up files the last few weeks, she said.

County Board Speaker Jim Moustis, R-Frankfort, commended Friefeld for his service at a Dec. 15 board meeting.

Moustis said Wednesday that Friefeld gave formal notice of his retirement Dec. 14.

The appointment of a replacement chief of staff is up to the speaker of the board and doesn’t require a board vote.

Freitag, who was first elected to the board in 2012, was re-elected in November to a two-year term representing District 6. Some have called the timing of the appointment into question.

Minority Leader Herb Brooks Jr., D-Joliet, said Wednesday that Freitag

is “very well-qualified” for the role and he has no problem with Moustis’ pick.

But Democrats on the board are curious about the timing after Freitag won re-election.

Brooks has said he and other leaders were aware of Friefeld’s retirement before the election.

“The suspicion among my caucus was, when did she know about [the offer]?” Brooks said. “We have no way of knowing that, so the best thing I can tell now is that I hope she is able to be bipartisan.”

Moustis said Friefeld had been thinking about retiring for the past year, but never set an official date.

“I knew he was thinking about it, but I was thinking more toward the end of 2017 or early 2018,” Moustis said. “I was not expecting it [in December]. It didn’t give me a lot of time [to find a replacement].”

Moustis said anyone commenting on the timing of the offer to Freitag as it relates to the election is speculating with no facts to back it up, noting that he himself was up for re-election.

Freitag said Moustis approached her about the job in December after Friefeld retired. At the time, it was just an idea, she said, but she discussed it with family over the holidays.

“It wasn’t a formal offer [before the holidays], it was something to consider,” Freitag said. “... He might have been thinking about other people; I’m

Moustis said he formally offered the position to Freitag on Jan. 6, and gave her the weekend to think it over. He said she tentatively accepted Jan. 10. Moustis said he informed Brooks; Majority Leader Chuck Maher, R-Naperville; and Minority Whip Lauren Staley-Ferry, D-Joliet, of the news Jan. 12.

Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow took issue with people speculating on the timing of the appointment without evidence that Freitag knew of Moustis’ offer before the election.

“It’s calling her integrity into dispute,” Glasgow said, “with no evidence.

People are assuming. But we’re seeing that all over politics right now, and I think people are fed up with it.”

Glasgow said Freitag has showed the highest level of integrity in her time on the Wilmington City Council and later the Will County Board.

He said he thinks Freitag is a perfect

fit for the job, citing how fast the county sheriff’s office and courthouse projects have moved along since she became head of the Capital Improvements Committee.

Glasgow said he was always able to work with Friefeld to move the county’s business forward in an effective way, and he expects the same from Freitag.

Moustis said he hopes to bring forward a candidate to fill Freitag’s spot on the board in April for a full County Board vote. Minus Freitag, there are 15 Republicans and 10 Democrats on the board.

Freitag said she wasn’t planning to run again for the County Board, but she loves being a part of projects and helping constituents.

“But now it’s not just District 6, I get to help all of Will County,” Freitag said.

In the role, she will be advising and counseling all 26 board members – both Republican and Democrat.

“Any issue they have I am here to do research on,” she said. “I think being an attorney is very helpful. I’ll be looking at new legislation and how that affects the county. Knowing how it impacts us is integral for this role.”

Moustis said Freitag “uniquely fits the bill” of what he was looking for in a chief of staff – someone familiar with local government and the executive form of government, and someone who interacts well with the state’s attorney and is an attorney or has a law degree.

Church honors police officers with Blue Mass “Grant them courage when they face adversity, wisdom when they must make quick decisions.”

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Police officers received a holy blessing Wednesday at a Blue Mass at the Cathedral of St. Raymond Nonnatus.

Students of St. Raymond School and the Rev. Brad Baker held their hands in the air toward the police officers gathered in the cathedral for a ceremony to honor them. Baker said a prayer, asking for God to bless them and officers everywhere.

“Grant them courage when they face adversity, wisdom when they must make quick decisions,” Baker said.

Officers, including those with children attending St. Raymond’s or who were part of the parish, were invited to receive the blessing.

Students participated in the Blue Mass as part of their commitment this year to the culture of RISE, or Respect, Integrity, Service and Excellence.

Marjorie Hill, principal of the Catholic school, said the school wanted to show students an example of a model rising to greatness, and police officers came to mind.

He said the Mass also is an opportunity for children to see officers in a different light compared to what they may see on the news.

During the Mass, Baker explained to the students that the church was honoring the officers because of their commitment to RISE and that they are called to do acts of kindness for ordinary people. “[These police officers] literally put their lives on the line every day to keep our communities safe, and we owe them a great debt and gratitude,” Baker said.

NEW LENOX – A second Lincoln-Way School District 210 board candidates forum will be held – this time by the Lincoln-Way Education Association.

The district’s teachers union announced Wednesday that it will hold a candidate forum from 7 to 9 p.m. March 8 at Lincoln-Way Central High School, 1801 E. Lincoln Highway, New Lenox.

Invitations have been sent to all 13 candidates, and an RSVP from them has been requested by Feb. 24. The forum is open to the public, and audience members will have an opportunity to ask the candidates questions. The union also will be soliciting email questions that can be sent to lwea210@gmail.com.

Tim Conway, union president, said the union has held candidate forums for board elections in the past, as well as for state races. He said the union is hoping all candidates will be on the stage at the same time.

“This is something we’ve done before, and what’s interesting is the last one we did was before all the controversy, obviously, and it was very sparsely attended,” Conway said.

Holt Road to get sewer and water

Residents on Holt Road will be receiving a letter from the village with important information about the upcoming sewer and water project.

About 12 residents will need to dedicate a portion of their property for a utility easement. According to the OPUS property agreement, the company will provide sewer and water. Minooka is the facilitator for obtaining the easements for the project, Village Administrator Dan Duffy said.

Surveyors will stake out the property so residents can see where the work will be performed.

Residents also will be invited to a meeting Feb. 8, when village officials will walk everyone through the project, Duffy said.

Village officials confirmed they are having a dialogue with other entities in an effort to reduce the weight limit on McEvilly Road.

The current weight limit is 80,000 pounds, which allows trucks of all sizes in all types of weather, Brennan said.

The preferred weight limit is 12,000 pounds, which would eliminate big trucks cutting through the area.

The reduction in weight limit not only will keep the road in better condition, but will be a bonus once the bike path is installed along it, Brennan said.

There also are schools along the stretch of road that runs between Ridge Road and Route 6.

MINOOKA – Minooka’s first hotel, Hampton Inn, has been successful enough that developers want to build another across the street on Bob Blair Road.

Village officials approved an economic incentive agreement Tuesday with land developer Minooka BBR Ventures LLC and hotel developer Minooka Hotel Associates for an 87-room TownePlace Suites by Marriot.

The investors of the Hampton Inn, Kinnseth Group, originally said they were prepared to support a second hotel once Hampton Inn maintained 74 percent capacity, Minooka Mayor Pat Brennan said.

Hampton Inn was at 89 percent capacity its first year.

The second hotel will create job opportunities, serve to further development of adjacent lots, strengthen the commercial sector of the village and enhance the tax base of the village.

“It’s tax dollars for the village,” Brennan said. “It’s great for the community.”

Since the road crosses several boundaries, Minooka officials are working with Channahon Mayor Missy Moorman Schumaker and officials from both Grundy and Will counties on the project.

Ferro, nee Drauden, age 88, passed away on January 24, 2017 at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center Survived by her children, Sue (the late Ed) Levandowski, Chuck Ferro (Kelly Dunshee) and Carol (Larry) Brown; grandchildren, Lynda (Curt) Wingerter, Scott (Amy) Larkin, Marty (Emily) Ferro, Christopher Brown, Branden Ferro, Ryan Brown, Greg Brown and David Brown; also survived by numerous great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by her beloved husband, Martin; sister, Marjorie (Al) Nolan; brother, Gerald Drauden; parents, Agnes (Moran) and Henry Drauden.

Mary was a member of the Joliet Croatian Club. She was the proud owner and operator of Marty’s Fine Foods in Crest Hill for over 40 years and was known for her chicken and dumplings. Mary also enjoyed playing euchre and loved her beloved dog Maggie.

Dr. Mark R. Robbin, M.D. 60, of Cleveland, Ohio passed away peacefully on January 21, 2017. Mark was born July 26, 1956, in Joliet, IL, the son of Jeanne (Breen) Robbin and the late Richard R. Robbin.

Surviving are wife, Dana Robbin; mother, Jeanne; sister, Jane; and brother, Jim. Proud uncle to nieces and nephews, Lauren, Ann, Steven, Mary and David Robbin. Mark attended St. Paul the Apostle and Joliet West High School. Mark graduated college from the University of California, Santa Barbara and then obtained his Medical Degree at Keck School of Medicine of USC of California; completed his residency at Mount Sinai Medical Center of Florida along with his Fellowship at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology of Washington, D.C. Mark’s passion was medicine for the past 21 years.

He practiced at University Hospitals Case Medical Center (UHCMC) in Cleveland, Ohio as a Radiologist with specialties in Bone and Soft Tissue Cancer (Sarcoma), Musculoskeletal Imaging and Musculoskeletal Radiology; subspecialties in General, Neuro and Nuclear Radiology as well as Ultrasound. While working at UHCMC, Mark served as the Vice Chairman of the Department of Radiology, Division Chief of Musculoskeletal Imaging and Emergency Radiology, Program Director of Diagnostic Radiology, Musculoskeletal Fellowship Director and was also a Professor of Radiology at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.

Mark built the Resident’s Library that is now being named the Robbin Library. With regard to their yearly Radiology Conference, that is currently in the name of two distinguished alumni, Mark has been added to that esteemed list. Mark has constantly been involved in research and has numerous publications; he has also delivered presentations worldwide.

In his spare time, Mark loved spending time with his family and being an uncle to his five nieces and nephews. Also, whenever possible, he would travel to salt water for deep sea diving, as that was his true passion.

NEW YORK – Mary Tyler Moore, the star of TV’s beloved “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” whose comic realism helped revolutionize the depiction of women on the small screen, died Wednesday. She was 80.

Moore gained fame in the 1960s as the frazzled wife, Laura Petrie, on “The Dick Van Dyke Show.” In the 1970s, she created one of TV’s first career-woman sitcom heroines in “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.”

“She was an impressive person and a talented person and a beautiful person.

A force of nature,” producer, creator and director Carl Reiner, who created the “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” told The Associated Press. “She’ll last forever, as long as there’s television. Year after year, we’ll see her face in front of us.”

Moore won seven Emmy awards over the years and was nominated for an Oscar for her 1980 portrayal of an affluent mother whose son is accidentally killed in “Ordinary People.”

Tributes came pouring in. “Mary’s energy, spirit and talent created a new bright spot in the television landscape and she will be very much missed,” Robert Redford, director of “Ordinary

With her unerring gift for comedy, Moore seemed perfectly fashioned to the smarter wit of the new, post-Eisenhower age. As Laura, she traded in the housedress of countless sitcom wives for Capri pants that were as fashionable as they were suited to a modern American woman.

But it was as Mary Richards, the plucky Minneapolis TV news producer on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” (197077), that Moore truly made her mark.

At a time when women’s liberation was catching on worldwide, her character brought to TV audiences an independent, 1970s career woman. Other than Marlo Thomas’ 1960s sitcom character “That Girl,” who at least had a steady boyfriend, there were few precedents.

Thomas on Wednesday called Moore a gifted actress and a wonderful comedian. “I’m proud that we were in that groundbreaking sorority that brought single independent women to television,” Thomas said in a statement.

In 1992, Moore received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. A decade later, a life-size bronze statue went on display in Minneapolis, depicting her tossing her trademark tam into the air as she did in the opening credits.

Illinois Senate skips planned budget vote

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois senators, still grappling with the sticker shock of a tax increase and other far-reaching restructuring to end the nation’s longest state budget deadlock, skipped a much-anticipated vote on the massive package and adjourned early Wednesday evening.

Senate President John Cullerton, a Chicago Democrat, and Senate Republican Leader Christine Radogno of Lemont, had set up Wednesday as decision day on their bipartisan plan to end the longest budget drought of any state since World War II. That plan includes new taxes to drive down a multibillion-dollar deficit while attempting to address Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner’s demands for changes to ease the cost of business and crimp the influence of unions and politicians.

The Senate vote was to cap a big day at the Capitol. The Republican governor lauded the Senate’s cooperation earlier Wednesday during his annual State of the State address to a joint session of the General Assembly.

He would not venture a statement on whether there would be a vote on the Senate’s final scheduled session day in January. Radogno promised swift action on the plan, certainly by month’s end.

The stalemate began shortly after Rauner took office in 2015. He won’t talk about how to tackle a multibillion-dollar deficit until Democrats consider business- and political-climate changes he said will boost the economy and restore voter confidence. Democrats have said the state should raise taxes and cut spending to get the deficit under control before addressing “nonbudget” issues.

The Senate plan, notably, would increase the personal income tax 33 percent, from 3.75 percent to 4.99 percent.

It would create a 5 percent excise tax on some services such as car repair and laundry.

But it also includes legislation to answer Rauner’s concerns. They include a two-year freeze on local property taxes, cost-cutting restrictions on payouts for workers’ compensation claims, streamlined state purchasing and an avenue for voters to eliminate unnecessary local governments.

Trump moves to ‘build that wall’ with Mexico

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump moved aggressively to tighten the nation’s immigration controls Wednesday, signing executive actions to jumpstart construction of his promised U.S.-Mexico border wall and cut federal grants for immigrant-protecting “sanctuary cities.” As early as Thursday, he is expected to pause the flow of all refugees to the U.S. and indefinitely bar those fleeing war-torn Syria.

“Beginning today the United States of America gets back control of its borders,” Trump declared during a visit to the Department of Homeland Security. “We are going to save lives on both sides of the border.”

The actions, less than a week into Trump’s presidency, fulfilled pledges that animated his candidacy and represented a dramatic redirection of U.S. immigration policy. They were cheered by Republicans allies in Congress, condemned by immigration advocates and the trigger for immediate new tension with the Mexican government.

“I regret and reject the decision of the U.S. to build the wall,” Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto said Wednesday in a nationally televised address.

Trump is expected to wield his executive power again later this week with the directive to dam the refugee flow into the U.S. for at least four months, in addition to the open-ended pause on Syrian arrivals.

The president’s upcoming order is also expected to suspend issuing visas for people from several predominantly Muslim countries – Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen – for at least 30 days, according to a draft executive order obtained by The Associated Press.

Immigration advocates and others assailed the new president’s actions. Omar Jadwat, director of the American Civil Liberties Union’s Immigrants’ Rights Project, said the president’s desire to construct a border wall was “driven by

racial and ethnic bias that disgraces America’s proud tradition of protecting vulnerable migrants.”

How Trump plans to pay for the wall project is murky.

While he has repeatedly promised that Mexico will foot the bill, U.S. taxpayers are expected to cover the initial costs and the new administration has said nothing about how it might compel Mexico to reimburse the money.

In an interview with ABC News earlier Wednesday, Trump said, “There will be a payment; it will be in a form, perhaps a complicated form.”

Nieto, who has insisted his country will not pay for a wall, has been expected to meet with Trump at the White House next week, although a senior official said Trump’s announcement had led him to reconsider the visit.

Congressional aides say there is about $100 million of unspent appropriations in the Department of Homeland Security account for border security, fencing and infrastructure.

That would allow planning efforts to get started, but far more money would have to be appropriated for construction to begin.

Trump’s inaugural speech struck dour tone SPRINGFIELD – As I drove across Springfield on Friday, I turned my radio to the nation’s inauguration.

As Donald Trump’s words echoed through the cab of my pickup, I became more and more depressed.

Inauguration addresses are supposed to be a time of magnanimity, when the victor reaches across the nation’s divisions and rubs balm in its wounds.

Think of Illinois’ favorite son, Abraham Lincoln.

After four years of Civil War he stood at the dais taking the oath of office and uttered these lasting words: “With malice toward none, with charity for all, with firmness in the fight as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in, to bind up the nation’s wounds, to care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow and his orphan, to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace among ourselves and with all nations.”

That’s what oratory sounds like.

Lincoln uttered those words when the nation was at its nadir. Hundreds of thousands of its men lay dead on its battlefields, millions of its people enslaved and hatred rife between the North and the South.

Today our nation faces its challenges.

But we are undeniably the most powerful nation on earth. We have our problems, to be sure, but we remain the envy of the world.

Trump seemed clueless to the time and the setting of his remarks.

He said this: “But for too many of our citizens, a different reality exists: mothers and children trapped in poverty in our inner cities; rusted-out factories scattered like tombstones across the landscape of our nation; an education system flush with cash, but which leaves our young and beautiful students deprived of all knowledge.”

Um, “all knowledge?”

Those aren’t words designed to elevate.

I grew up in Galesburg, a town where rusted-out factories are scattered like tombstones. I’m aware of the problems facing Trump Country, but an inauguration is a time to lift up, not pound down.

Think of the words of John F. Kennedy when he took the oath of office: “And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country.”

Instead from Trump we received these words: “One by one, the factories shuttered

Yes, we have our problems.

But, gee, Mr. President isn’t this a time to call for coming together?

Think of the words of Franklin Roosevelt: “So, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself – nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance.”

That’s what an inauguration address should sound like.

As I listened to Trump’s words tumble from my truck’s speakers, I racked my brain for when I’ve come across an inauguration address anything like this. Two words came to mind: “Dan Walker.”

When he was sworn in as governor he told the Springfield audience: “The Free Ride is Over.”

Like Trump’s, those were hardly words of kindness or charity.

And like Trump’s address, those words were delivered in a time of relative prosperity.

Walker served one disastrous term as Illinois’ chief executive and a second term in federal prison. Only Rod Blagojevich rivals Walker in Illinois gubernatorial arrogance.

But neither man has anything on The Donald.

As I heard President Trump say: “For too long, a small group in our nation’s capital has reaped the rewards of government while the people have borne the cost,” I heard an echo of Dan Walker saying, “The Free Ride is Over.”

Let’s hope for the sake of our nation, Trump’s time in office is more successful than Walker’s.

The greatest nation on earth deserves that much.

To the Editor: On the Chicago State issue, there are various problems starting with bad management, inefficiency, management turmoil, low enrollment, very high tuition compared to the city colleges, poor location, poor academic reputation and a funding crisis.

This is not the beautiful Northwestern U located on the lakeshore in Evanston, or the U of Chicago on the Midway in prestigious Hyde Park, near the Museum of Science and Industry, nor the U of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana or the UIC near the loop on Halsted and Roosevelt Road.

What remains of the few students would be better served by having the U of Illinois on their diploma.

Some much better management and knowhow is just up the road at the University of Illinois. However, it remains to be seen if even this could resuscitate what remains of the Chicago State student body or fill the classrooms. Time for triage?

Let’s build on a winner.

Benefits of raising children outweigh costs

To the Editor: The Department of Agriculture claims the cost of raising a child

from birth through age 17 is $233,610, or almost $14,000 annually. As the father of seven children, let me say that this is nonsense.

Moreover, the Department of Agriculture fails to identify the multiple benefits of raising children, such as the physical, spiritual, intellectual and emotional advantages.

These benefits are not just unquantifiable, but inestimable. The value of raising, nurturing and training children far surpass the outlandish financial estimates of Washington, D.C., bureaucrats.

We’re shortsighted if we fail to see that the current U.S. trend is unsustainable and portends economic trouble, including lower living standards for most citizens.

We simply have to look at Japan, Greece or Italy for a lesson in the detriment of low birth rates.

Federal officials are simply out of touch with middle America. Most of us don’t spend hundreds of dollars on a hammer and we spend far less than they estimate to raise a child each year. The government can learn something from working families.

St. Francis men keep division lead with win over Governors State

dgoss@shawmedia.com JOLIET – With the parity in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference South, every game is critical.

The University of St. Francis men’s basketball team led the final 29 1⁄ 2 minutes Wednesday night but was unable to put away pesky Governors State until the closing moments of a 98-92 victory at the Sullivan Center.

USF (15-8, 9-5) thus maintained its hold on the CCAC South lead. Purdue Northwest entered Wednesday’s play 7-6 in the division, while Holy Cross was 7-7 and Calumet St. Joseph 6-7.

“The parity in the South is really something,” St. Francis coach Ryan Marks said. “Nobody has really put it all together for six or seven games yet. It will be interesting to see who does that over the next 31⁄2 weeks.”

Marks said the Saints are capable of being that team.

“Over the last four or five games we have had a better level of consistency,” he said. “But we still have to find one more notch of consistency to be able to win the South.”

USF was on target offensively from the get-go. Jean Pietrzak scored 18 first-half points on 6-of-6 shooting, including two from 3-point range, and 4 of 4 on free throws. He finished with 24 points to lead six Saints in double figures.

“I don’t want to think it’s me, me, me,” Pietrzak said. “Coach Marks wants us to get the ball inside and play as a team. It’s everyone doing

“Pietrzak at times goes unnoticed, but not by our team or the league,” Marks said. “There are games like tonight when he scores, and there are other games where he is more of a facilitator, screener, rebounder. He can score, though, when he gets the opportunities.”

The Saints shot 49.2 percent on 31 of 63. They were 13 of 25 (.520) from 3-point range and 23 of 26 (.938) from the free-throw line.

“When we we take 3s in rhythm, we’re a pretty good 3-point shooting team,” Marks said.

Jake Raspopvich 16, Iain Morison 13, Landus Anderson 11 and Jorden Thornton 10. Raspopovich, who hit both of his 3-point tries, and Ballestero, who was 4 of 8 from long range, both made four straight free throws in the final 39 seconds to sew it up.

Rouse, Ekhomu help the Saints remain unbeaten

dgoss@shawmedia.com JOLIET – With the University of St. Francis women’s basketball team’s scoring leader, Charnelle Reed, sidelined after receiving a corizone shot in her shoulder, Mary Rouse was more than happy to donate a few extra minutes to the cause.

Rouse, a senior from Joliet Catholic Academy, had eight points, two rebounds, an assist and a steal in a strong reserve role as the Saints, who are ranked No. 1 in NAIA Division II, remained unbeaten Wednesday night at the Sullivan Center with an 87-63 victory over Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Governors State.

“I had fun today,” said Rouse, who came in averaging 1.8 points and 1.4 rebounds a game. “This has been a lot of fun all season, especially with it being my last year. Whether I’m in the game or not, I’m happy to be part of it. I always try to encourage my teammates. We all try to do what we do best

to help the team.”

“I wouldn’t ever feel comfortable without my best player on the floor,” USF coach Samantha Quigley-Smith said with a smile. “But we have a veteran group that understands that we will be fine if everyone does her job. What Charnelle usually does for us had to come from other places tonight.”

One of those places was Rouse.

“Mary Rouse did a great job off the bench,” Quigley-Smith said. “Whether it’s doing a good job defensively, getting a big rebound, a steal, hitting a basket or just coming in and giving us energy, she does the job.”

The Saints (21-0, 14-0) had not been getting off to quick starts in their past several games, and Quigley-Smith said that was an area of emphasis Wednesday, especially on the defensive end.

Governors State (6-16, 5-9) was within 20-13 after one quarter, but the Saints stretched that to 41-25 at the half. The Jaguars (6-16, 5-9) got no closer than 14 points the rest of the way.

Jordan Giddings led USF with 17 points to go with 10 rebounds. Kaitlyn Aylward added 15 points and nine boards. Nichole Davidson scored 14 points and Christina Ekhomu had 12.

Ekhomu and Kamari Jordan chipped in four assists, and Davidson and Angelica Osusky had two steals.

The Saints totaled 22 assists on their 32 baskets.

“Playing as well as we did without our best player, and being able to get some others extra minutes, speaks to how many threats we have on this team,” said Ekhomu, a junior guard from JCA. “Charnelle fills the stats sheet like nobody I ever saw, but we filled in for her real well.”

The excellent assist-to-basket ratio underscores the Saints’ unselfish nature.

“We share the ball very well,” Ekhomu said. “Sometimes we do overpass.”

“We do a good job of making the extra pass, although we do overpass sometime,” Quigley-Smith said.

Ekhomu said it’s a tough call on whether a good assist or a basket gives her more personal satisfaction.

“That’s a tough question,” she said.

“When I make a good pass, I’m happy for my teammate who scored. And if I score and my teammate is happy that she got an assist, I’m happy about that.”

The passing game is part of the reason USF is 21-0. Yet the Saints are not talking about the record or their No. 1 ranking.

“We don’t even discuss it,” Rouse said. “I don’t want to say we’re superstitious, it’s more that we’re humble.

We just do what we do to get better each day at practice.”

“Even a great record is not going to mean a thing if we don’t get where we want to be,” Ekhomu said.

Quigley-Smith said wins at this stage of the season are not in the discussion “because they really don’t matter now. They matter in March.

Right now, we want to focus on getting better every game, every possession.”

“We have two guys like Jake and Jo Jo who can handle the ball and they’re good free throw shooters,” Marks said. “They get fouled, and they make ’em pay.”

“Coach looks to Jo Jo and me to be leaders,” Raspopovich said. “We’re seniors, we’ve been here and been through it all. We take care of the ball and make free throws at the end of games, and everybody else does a good job rebounding.”

Indeed, Pietrzak and Morison both grabbed huge rebounds to help the Saints close it out. Pietrzak finished with a teamhigh 10 rebounds, Logan Timmons had nine and Morison seven.

“We knew this game would be hard,” Raspopovich said. “We didn’t play very well the first time against them at their place (an 87-69 USF loss Nov. 16). We knew if we played within our system, we would be OK.” “In general, we did a good job,” Marks said.

“Turnovers and inconsistencies in transition hurt us some, and they’re a talented team that presents interesting problems. They have four or five guys on the court at a time who can drive and shoot the outside shot.”

Pietrzak said the Saints knew what they were up against, but they had a little extra motivation.

“We definitely wanted revenge for losing to them the last time,” he said.

They refused to let this one get away. After USF led 51-42 at half, the Jaguars got as close as 57-53, 83-79, 84-81 and 86-84 before the Saints put it away behind their foul shooting.

Raiders are going nowhere fast THE WAY WE HEAR IT

While we have written on this topic before in The Way We Hear It, the confirmation by the league office that the Oakland Raiders requested formal permission to relocate to Las Vegas last week has once again set off a whirlwind of reporting and conversation that the move is a done deal.

Again, we are here to report that not only is the Raiders move to Vegas not a done deal, according to multiple sources around the league, the odds may actually be less than 50-50 that the move is approved, and even if it is approved there are still so many details unsettled that Mark Davis’ deal with Vegas could easily fall apart.

As one high-level team executive told us, “Mark Davis is a nice enough guy but he is not anywhere near in his father’s league, and he is in way over his head in his dealings with the other owners and the people in Las Vegas.”

There are two very significant hurdles that remain in Davis’ finding 23 owners willing to join him in voting to approve the move.

The National Football League cannot be any clearer in its objections to legalized betting on games, and even if that position is a public relations sham since anyone and everyone knows how critical it is to the league’s transcendent popularity, the NFL has spent a fortune in time and money staking out that claim.

For a league that has gone out of its way to get everything it’s touched over the past few seasons wrong in the poll of public opinion, to suddenly say its fine with putting a franchise in Las Vegas will be just one more public relations fiasco, especially with the cost being it will mark the owners thumbing their noses at the third loyal fan base – St. Louis and San Diego – in the past 12 months.

And that’s not the highest hurdle. Many assume that, since Jerry Jones has voiced his support for the move and because he was the power broker that swung the deal for the Rams and Chargers to land in LA, Davis will get his votes.

Additionally, what is not widely known is that Jones was Al Davis’ closest confidant among his fellow owners during his later years running the Raiders before his death.

Visiting with Davis in the week leading up to the Giants vs. Patriots Super Bowl in Phoenix in February 2008, Davis told us, “What I admire so much about Jerry is the way he’s been able to marry his business acumen and concerns with

his football business and accomplish the best for both the game and his team.”

How close Jones has stayed with the younger Davis in the five-plus years since he inherited the team we do not know, but we have been told recently by several sources close to Jones that while he likes the idea of a team in Vegas, he won’t put his weight behind a potentially bad or dangerous business deal if all the i’s aren’t dotted and the t’s aren’t crossed.”

And therein lies Davis’ biggest problem.

Yes, he, the city of Las Vegas and casino magnate Sheldon Adelson have agreed to the framework of a deal that will allow them to build a $1.7 billion to $1.9 billion, 65,000-seat, domed stadium in Las Vegas, and the city has approved $750 million in public money.

It would be the largest publicly funded commitment to an NFL stadium in history and the owners all love that.

Additionally, Adelson has committed $650 million of his own money to the project and there are multiple reports that Davis has a deal with Goldman Sachs to finance the remaining capital required.

Where things get extremely murky is Davis does not have a deal with Adelson for what the multi-billionaire expects in return for his $650 million. There are multiple reports Adelson wants a piece of the team – something we’re told Davis doesn’t have to give up and would be loathe to if he did – and significant operating control of the venue.

Finally, there is the biggest issue. The Rams paid fellow owners $550 million for the right to move from St. Louis to Los Angeles. While relocation fees have not been announced yet for the Chargers and Raiders, they aren’t going to be less. Davis just doesn’t have anywhere near that kind of money as far as anyone can tell, and league rules prohibit him from borrowing against the equity in his team.

Davis’ fellow owners will certainly be taking up his request to relocate at the winter meetings in Arizona at the end of March, but they are not obligated to vote on the move at that time and it’s a safe bet they won’t be voting if Davis hasn’t locked down the multiple loose ends in this deal.

Finally, The Way We Hear It, there are at least five owners who may or may not be willing to vote for Davis but are loathe to have Adelson as a partner should he sell him equity in the Raiders.

We aren’t saying the Raiders aren’t going to Las Vegas. Nothing Roger Goodell and his gaggle of owners do surprises us any more.

We are saying that multiple sources aligned with almost a dozen different teams are telling us this game is still in the first quarter.

Is Jim Irsay dumb like a fox

Media and fans alike wondered for weeks what was going on in Indianapolis while the other six teams in the NFL hustled to fill vacant head coach and general manager jobs. The assumption was Ryan Grigson and Chuck Pagano must be safe for another year, particularly in light of the four-year contract extensions each received prior to this season.

So there was more than a bit of surprise when Irsay announced Grigson would be fired while Pagano would get another year, after all the vacancies but the 49ers, who were the only other team looking for a G.M., had been filled.

Perhaps Irsay just couldn’t make up his mind, or perhaps as we’re hearing Irsay wanted to be certain of his options before making a move.

A source close to the situation in Indianapolis tells us that as the other clubs’ searches went on and were eventually completed, Irsay was

stunned that almost all of the top general manager and head coaching prospects were still available.

Knowing that he had one asset none of the other clubs could come close to matching, Andrew Luck, Irsay decided championship weekend was the time to pounce.

New England’s Nick Caserio, Kansas City’s Chris Ballard and Green Bay’s Eliot Wolf and Brian Gutekunst are at the top of almost every G.M. search list – Caserio is the hottest name in the league – and all declined to be considered for the 49ers job, the only other current general manager opening.

Ironically, it’s Irsay who now has the field all to himself as he goes prospecting.

Additionally, while it seems highly likely if not certain Kyle Shanahan will take the 49ers job, he, Josh McDaniels, Matt Patricia, Mike Smith and Todd Haley were all as highly and in most cases more highly rated than the assistants who’ve been awarded head coaching jobs so far.

We’re told that should Irsay manage to land Caserio or Ballard in the near future, and one of them can convince one of the remaining top head coaching prospects that he and Luck offer a job too good to pass up in spite of Irsay’s comments to date, Pagano may not be out of the woods yet either, and Irsay may end up making some of his fellow owners look like amateurs.

It will be interesting to see where the two teams are in their progression, how they match up, if the potential rematch does occur in March in the championship game of the Class 4A Lincoln-Way East Sectional.

THE STATS BOOK

The first thing to notice statistically from a game such as Tuesday’s is that there were lots of shot attempts and plenty of rebounds to be had. These two teams really got after it on the boards.

“It looked like a track meet at times,

when both teams got on runs,” DiForti said. “For the most part, we didn’t finish at the rim as well as they did.”

By my stats, West made 31 of 68 shots, 45.6 percent, while Bolingbrook hit 29 of 75, a 38.7 mark. However, the Raiders were 23 of 29 (.793) from the freethrow line to the Tigers’ 10 of 21 (.476).

Free throws were a big issue for the Tigers in the loss to Young, when they hit 14 of 40. The 10 of 21 against Bolingbrook suggests that remains an area that requires attention. Meanwhile, the Tigers committed 18 turnovers to Bolingbrook’s 15. The Raiders held a 45-39 rebounding edge, including a 17-10 advantage in offensive boards.

Oswego beats Plainfield Central for SPC title

cherron@shawmedia.com OSWEGO – Plainfield Central’s wrestling team was trying to snap a five-year drought of conference titles, but Oswego had a little extra incentive when the squads met Wednesday to determine this season’s Southwest Prairie Conference champion.

In fact, make that about five times as much motivation.

The No. 17 Panthers captured their first conference championship in 25 years, thanks to several swing matches that went their way to help them claim eight wins and a 33-24 victory over the No. 19 Wildcats in the initial auditorium dual meet staged at Oswego.

When Oswego last won a league title in 1992, it still was in the Little Seven Conference. And Allen Swanson, who sealed the deal with a win by technical

fall in the finale, was able to join his dad, Jeremy, as members of the school’s most-recent and last champions.

“There were multiple matches where they finished and we didn’t, so they deserve it,” Wildcats coach Ryan West said. “We had more than our share of opportunities to win and we didn’t finish. So all of the credit goes to Oswego, whose kids didn’t quit.”

In the opener at 152, Doug Cleaves recorded a fall in 2:15, and Jared Ellingwood followed with a win by technical in 4:00 to give the Wildcats (24-2, 8-1) an early 11-0 advantage.

But the Panthers (20-2, 9-0) responded with four straight wins, three of which were determined in the final period and two whose outcome was unclear until the last 15 seconds.

At 170, Central’s Josh Mackenzie was tied with Dan Majewski at 4-4 heading into the final period before the Panther

got a pinning combination 15 seconds later. Then Josh Torres pulled away for a 7-1 victory at 182 over Ryan Yohe.

In the next match, Central’s Tommy Gustafson took a late 10-6 lead, but Joe Majewski took advantage of a locked hands call and added a reversal and nearfall with 12 seconds left to rally for an 11-10 win to give the hosts a 12-11 lead.

Wildcat Jake May led 1-0 late in the match at 220, but Kevin Alvarez got a reversal with 13 seconds left to claim a 2-1 win. However, Central bounced back with a one-point decision at heavyweight as Jacob Ramos edged Jared Romero to pull the visitors to within 1514 at the dual’s midway mark.

Central briefly moved back in front at 17-15 when Nick Minnito claimed a 7-4 victory over Aric Nieves, but the Panthers reclaimed the lead and moved in front by three points at 113 when Michael Aguirre record a win by technical

fall in 6:00.

Luke Pradel gave the Panthers a 2417 lead when he won 10-1 over Jampierr Zhanay at 120, but the Wildcats answered with a 9-6 victory from Ethan Plese over Sam Saravia in the next match to trail 24-20 with three matches remaining.

Oswego moved closer to victory when Gannon Hughes beat Jake Bogdan 12-1 at 132. Jake Warren pulled the Wildcats to within 28-24 heading into the finale after winning 9-0 over Dylan LaVigne. But the Panthers wrapped things up with Swanson’s win by technical fall in 4:46.

“These guys have bought into the program and they love each other,” Panthers coach Andrew Cook said. “It’s a great group of guys, top to bottom, senior to freshman. They take each other under their wing and battle; we do a lot of different things together. We tell them every day to tell their team that you love them and they believe in it.”

Joliet West coach Nick DiForti alluded to the same thing.

As much as the packed house at Bolingbrook enjoyed watching two of the state’s best teams, and longtime former rivals in the SouthWest Suburban Blue, this one was not the be all and end all.

“We didn’t talk about any rankings, or about it being on TV or the outcome of this game any more than we would any other,” Brost said. “None of that is what matters. What matters is what happens the next day.”

Yes, the coach wants to see the unbeaten Raiders (17-0) continue to improve.

“Our team is family, and this is business to us,” junior guard Kaleb Thornton said. “The only thing that matters is getting where to want to be, which is downstate.”

When West coach Nick DiForti said, “Nobody wins the state championship game in January,” he was on the same page.

His Tigers know they played tough against two of the state’s top teams in a four-day span (they lost to Whitney

Teyvion Kirk scored 26 points on 11of-20 shooting for West, while Trevian Bell scored 21 and grabbed a gamehigh 13 rebounds. Elijah Ward had 10 rebounds and Charles McKinney chipped in 12 points and six rebounds in a superb effort off the bench.

For Bolingbrook, Malik Binns and Nana Akenten both had 20 points and eight rebounds, and they combined to shoot 17 of 27. Joseph Yesufu hit 12 of 14 free throws and scored 19 points. Tyler Cochran chipped in 11 and Thornton 10. With senior forward Trevor Ross not available, the two sophomore guards compensated on the boards as Cochran grabbed 10 rebounds and Yesufu nine.

One fun aspect of the game was the Nebraska-bound Akenten matched up against Bell, who will play at Wisconsin-Green Bay, on both ends of the floor at times, and Akenten guarding Kirk at other times. Kirk recently withdrew his commitment to Drake and reopened his recruiting.

“They are really good athletes,” Akenten said of Bell and Kirk. “It was fun going against them.”

As for the 6-foot-6 Binns, as huge as he has been to the Bolingbrook basketball team, he says his No. 1 sport is baseball. He’s a pitcher, a menacing figure standing 60 feet 6 inches away with a baseball in his hand.

Hawks use 19-4 run to beat Bulls

CHICAGO – Dennis Schroder scored 24 points, Paul Millsap added 21, and the Atlanta Hawks ended the game on a 19-4 run to beat the Bulls, 119-114, on Wednesday night.

Thabo Sefolosha scored 18 and Tim Hardaway Jr. added 17, hitting four of his team’s 17 3-pointers as the Hawks pulled out their seventh straight win against the Bulls.

Jimmy Butler led the Bulls with 40 points. Dwyane Wade scored 33, but the Bulls let a 10-point lead slip away down the stretch.

It was 110-100 with less than three minutes remaining when Millsap, Schroder and Hardaway nailed 3s on consecutive possessions to start the game-ending run. Schroder gave Atlanta a one-point lead with a layup, and Dwight Howard made one of two free throws to make it 112-110 with 58.6 seconds left.

After Butler banked in a pull-up shot, Howard threw down an alley-oop dunk on a pass from Kent Bazemore.

The Bulls’ Nikola Mirotic missed a 3 with 25.3 seconds left, and Schroder and Sefolosha combined to make five free throws in the final 20 seconds.

Illinois 76, Iowa 64: At Champaign,

Michael Finke scored 17 points off the bench and led Illinois in a 76-64 win over Iowa on Wednesday night.

Illinois got off to a quick 10-0 start in the first few minutes of the game and never gave back the lead.

Offense was not a problem in a

game where Illinois (13-8, 3-5 Big Ten) looked dominant, shooting 55 percent from the field in the first half and finished shooting 45 percent, including 9-19 from beyond the arc.

The offense thrived with good ball movement – Illinois finished with 18 assists, the second-most this season.

Maverick Morgan added 12 points and seven rebounds.

Nicholas Baer led the way for Iowa (11-10, 3-5) with 12 points.

Ohio State 78, Minnesota 72: At Columbus, Ohio, Marc Loving and Trevor Thompson each scored 19 points to lift Ohio State over Minnesota, 78-72, on Wednesday night.

Thompson’s total was a career high, and he also led the Buckeyes with 10 rebounds. Loving bounced back from a disappointing performance Sunday, and Ohio State dealt the Gophers their third straight loss.

Ohio State (13-8, 3-5 Big Ten) played one of its better games of the year against an evenly matched team, shooting 50 percent and making 23 of 30 free throws, including all nine in the first half.

JaQuan Lyle had 11 points and Jae’Sean Tate added 10 for the Buckeyes who have won three of their past four after dropping their first four Big Ten games of the season.

Nate Mason paced the Gophers (15-4, 3-5) with 21 points, and Akeem Springs has 15 points and 10 rebounds.

This is despite the fact that the church is two completely separate congregations.

“At one site we have the historic First Lutheran Church and the younger Santa Cruz Lutheran Church,” Forni said. “We have two congregations growing ever closer under one roof.”

First and Santa Cruz also is growing in its ministry. It is one of the last survivors in Joliet’s downtown that once boasted flourishing congregations.

“The Methodist church is the museum; the once gorgeous Christ Church is a parking lot, the Unitarian church is now condos, and St. Mary Carmelite has been vacant as long as I’ve been here,” Forni said.

Forni doesn’t foresee First and Santa Cruz succumbing to a similar fate anytime soon.

“There’s a lot of vibrancy,” Forni said. “That has to do with the young Latino families that are coming into their own realization that it’s time for them to step up in leadership and deeper involvement to sustain ministry in the heart of Joliet.”

An enduring presence

First and Santa Cruz celebrated the 25th anniversary of its first Santa Cruz liturgy in March, but celebration events were scheduled throughout the year, culminating in a dinner in December, Forni said.

However, First Lutheran Church also embraced the anniversary year.

That church has an even longer presence in Joliet. The church began in 1890 with German- and English-speaking members.

“I tell them [the congregation] they have a multilingual past to build on,” Forni said.

In its early years, First and Santa Cruz used space at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Joliet, Forni said.

It moved to First Lutheran Church in 2005, he added.

“I think, when we moved in, they had two teachers left and three students,” Forni said. “We had two teachers and 30 students. So it was a happy marriage.”

Santa Cruz each maintain separate budgets. In addition to sharing a Sunday school, the two churches will host mutual potlucks for certain feast days, some bilingual liturgies and ministry through its Blessing Bench Food Pantry.

On Sunday mornings, the church offers two Holy Communion liturgies. Although the 9 a.m. English service carries the tradition of First Lutheran, an increasing number of English-speaking Hispanics and African-American people also attend this liturgy, Forni said. The 11 a.m. liturgy

is bilingual.

Between the services at 10 a.m., First and Santa Cruz offers an all-age Sunday school. This includes the new Spanish-language Bible class, Forni said. For the most part, the collaboration runs smoothly.

“That’s not to say there aren’t some tweaks and tensions that can arise.

Both congregations have their traditions and patterns of doing things, and we’ve had to be mindful of each other,” Forni said. “Ephesians puts it this way: ‘Keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.’ ”

First and Santa Cruz’s outlook for future ministry is based on planning that began in February 1991, when Forni came to Santa Cruz Lutheran Church as a mission developer.

During the mid-1990s, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America looked at five Lutheran churches in Joliet to examine the possibility of partnerships or mergers, Forni said.

“The upshot after a couple of years was that everyone wanted to stay where they were,” Forni said, “with the exception of First and Santa Cruz.”

This is a documentary that uses Harper Lee’s 1960 novel “To Kill a Mockingbird” as a lens to view race, class, gender and

justice, then and now. Woven through the film is the story of two extraordinarily different high schools in Birmingham, Alabama – one black, one white – who collaborate on a remarkable production of the adapted play, “To Kill a Mockingbird.” A discussion follows the screening.

An estimated 5,000 pro-lifers came out to be a voice for the unborn, stand up for life and celebrate its beauty.

The marchers from St. Mary Immaculate Parish carried signs with pictures of Mary and the pope, and wore blue fleece scarves to identify the group. The parish had more than 100 people sign up to go on the march again this year. The march was just a little more than a mile.

JOLIET – The Joliet Diocese once again will lead the largest contingent of parishioners in the Chicago area at the annual March for Life rally Friday in Washington, D.C. Two hundred parishioners from the diocese will make the trip, including 56 Joliet Catholic Academy students and seven adults from the JCA community.

The 63 members of the Joliet Catholic Academy, the largest community attending within the diocese, are led

by JCA theology teacher and Respect Life Club moderator Jeremy Hylka.

The mission of the March for Life is to provide all Americans with a place to testify to the beauty of life and the dignity of each human.

Dear Doctors: It’s been two weeks since our son was born, and my wife seems to be having a hard time. She cries easily and has a lot of anxiety. Is this just baby blues, like my mother says, or is it postpartum depression?

Dear Reader: Your lives have undergone an enormous change, and that’s at the heart of your wife’s difficulties. Both in the shortterm disruption of the so-called “baby blues” and the more serious struggle of postpartum depression, the physical, emotional and hormonal changes a woman goes through after she gives birth often can pose challenges.

First, let us reassure you at two weeks postpartum, it’s perfectly natural for a new mother to feel overwhelmed. Up to 80 percent of new mothers report symptoms of mood swings, anxiety, mild depression, weepiness and negative thoughts or feelings in the first few weeks after the baby arrives.

Your wife’s body not only is recovering from the physical and emotional rigors of the birth process, but it also is now returning to its pre-pregnancy state. That means she is experiencing a sudden drop in hormone levels – estrogen and progesterone in particular – which have been at record levels during her pregnancy. Add in sleep deprivation and the seismic changes to her daily routine as she learns new tasks and takes responsibility for a new life, and it’s not surprising she feels overwhelmed.

When these symptoms don’t go away after several weeks, or if they become more severe, then postpartum depression becomes a possibility. When this is the case, seeing a primary care physician is vital.

Symptoms of postpartum depression mirror those of major depression. These include a sad or empty feeling that won’t go away, feelings of hopelessness or worthlessness, pervasive pessimism, a change in sleeping or eating habits, withdrawal from loved ones

I finally am at a point in my life I can pursue my passion of buying a sports car. I always have been a car guy, and my wife knows it. When I bring up the subject of buying the car of my dreams, which is not very expensive, she tells me I will look like an idiot. In her next breath she says it’s OK if I buy a sports car if it is the one she wants, and of course, the one she wants is very expensive.

No matter how I broach the subject, she does not “get” it is not about her but about my passion as a car guy. How do I get her to see my side? – Revving Up In New York Dear Revving Up: If it’s your money paying for the car, you don’t have to get her to see your side. It will be yours – not hers – and you should buy the one that gives you pleasure and drive it to your heart’s content.

Dear Abby: I have been with “Roger” for 28 years. He basically is a good, honest man, but he thinks only of himself. When I had heart surgery, he left me alone at the hospital that night, not knowing if I would live or die. (Nothing would have kept me from his bedside.) I’ll be having knee surgery soon, and he won’t take the day off or a sick day to take me. He wants a friend of ours to do it.

These are just two samples of his lack of support for me. I guess there is no way to make someone care enough about you to put their conveniences aside. When we moved out of state, he said if he didn’t find a job, he was going back home. Where would that have left me?

Roger wouldn’t have anything at all if it weren’t for me. I know I should dump him, but after 28 years, I can’t pull the rug out from under him. He cops an attitude and makes me feel bad if I press the subject. I only wish he would do something for me from his heart, but I guess it isn’t there. Any advice, Abby? – His

Assuming East takes that trick, he must either lead a club around to the dummy or concede a ruff-and-sluff (South sluffs a club from his hand and ruffs on the board). Note also that if West does produce the heart king, the club finesse is still available.

Finally, yes, it would have been simpler if North had signed off in six no-trump. North has 12 tricks after taking the club finesse, even if it loses.
