D-202 community raises concerns about marching band P.E. waivers

fsarver@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Many parents and students at Plainfield School District 202 are concerned about the potential effect of a new board policy on marching band.

The school board Monday approved the policy, which addresses physical education waivers for students who are athletes, in marching band or both.

The policy includes a one-semester P.E. waiver for each 11th- and 12th-grader who participates in one sport per season and a one-semester waiver for students in the same grades who participate in marching band, according to a curriculum and technology committee agenda. Previously, the policy dictated students who participated in marching band would receive two se-

Terry Wade, a senior at South, said students use the P.E. waiver because they want to take another class they either need to meet requirements or are passionate about that goes toward their future college education or career.

“I think that’s a much better use of time than walking the track for an hour. I was in gym class my freshman year and I can honestly say, we walked the track for an hour,” Wade said.

Board member Rod Westfall said he’s been a longtime band parent and seen how it benefits students through discipline and camaraderie.

“Let me assure you that this board and previous boards treats everybody equally,” he said.

Plainfield library foundation donates arts programming, pair of defibrillators

mmallory@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – The Plainfield Public Library District still is finding ways to provide services to residents amid budget cuts and staffing decreases.

On Jan. 17, the Plainfield Public Library Foundation approved funding the purchase of two automated external defibrillators and a fine arts program series at the library.

Interim Library Director Lisa Pappas said the AEDs cost about $3,600 total and the programs were $3,000 total.

The defibrillator purchase was a suggestion by the Plainfield Fire Protection District, which trained library staff in November on basic CPR. The department will now train staff to use the devices.

The fine arts series will start in March and continue throughout the year. The

Many parents and band booster club representatives had questions for district officials about the fairness of the policy, urging an alternative that wouldn’t impact marching band education.

Jerrod Cook, band director for Plainfield South High School, recommended the board stick with the previous practice.

He said 29 people addressed the board about the change at a Dec. 19 meeting and not one person was in favor of it.

series will focus on art, entertainment and history, according to a news release from the library.

The library foundation makes donations each year. Last year it donated to Citizens for a 21st Century Library, which is a committee supporting the library’s expansion.

“With different cuts we’ve had, the foundation has looked at ways to help out,” Pappas said.

The library district board of trustees cut the library’s programming budget in half after referendums in 2016 aimed at building a new library failed.

in anticipation of using the money for a library expansion and decided not to fill vacant full-time staff positions. The board also chose to cut Sunday hours, so the library is no longer open on Sunday.

Pappas said it’s been a very challenging time at the district.

“We already work with an extremely lean budget,” Pappas said. “But we’ve lost, since last March, 11 employees for various reasons – moving or retirements – and we haven’t refilled positions.”

Pappas said she currently is “the interim director, assistant director and communications manager.”

On Jan. 9, the library board unanimously voted to place a $25 million building bond and operating rate referendum question on the April 4 ballot.

The plan includes renovating the current 27,000-square-foot building and adding 23,000 square feet.

Just what economic development Cass Street needs is something city officials say they will work out with business owners in the near future.

Herald-News weren’t so sure either, but they did have a few ideas to improve the neighborhood.

One thing they agreed upon is that the city needs to fix a smell that emerges from the Cass Street sewer, especially when weather is warm.

“You come here in the summer, and there’s a sewer smell,” said Dan Gutierrez, owner of Vela’s Tap, a restaurant and bar. “Can you imagine coming out of your car, and you smell a sulfur or rotten egg smell, and you’re going to a restaurant to eat?”

Gutierrez also questioned the need for parking meters on Cass Street and suggested that the city offer small businesses some kind of relief on regulations.

He wanted to pave an empty lot next to the restaurant to create off-street parking. Paving the lot would have cost

Slammers still lining up stadium sponsor

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Joliet Slammers have been announcing new developments for the 2017 season, but a new stadium sponsor has not been one of them.

The Slammers are not saying much about the pursuit of a new naming rights sponsor for the baseball season other than that they continue to work on it.

“We’re still looking for a naming rights sponsor,” general manager Heather Mills said. “We’re still targeting businesses.”

The Silver Cross Field name is still on the stadium. It has been the only name the baseball park has had since it opened in 2002. But Silver Cross Hospital’s 15-year naming rights contract expired at the end of 2016.

The Slammers announced in August that the team was seeking a new stadium sponsor after Silver Cross Hospital decided not to renew its contract.

Silver Cross was signed up in November 2001 for a 15-year deal before the opening season of the then Joliet JackHammers. The naming rights deal was valued at $150,000 a year, although what Silver Cross paid was affected by attendance.

City Manager Jim Hock said city officials have a meeting scheduled in early February to talk with Slammers principal owner Nick Semaca about naming rights and other matters related to the city-owned stadium.

“There’s nothing new on the naming rights,” Hock said Tuesday.

“There’s nothing specific I can tell,” Mills said.

The absence of a stadium sponsor “hasn’t really affected our day-to-day business,” she said. The Slammers front office continues to line up sponsorships, which run from $250 spots in the program book on sale on game days to stadium naming rights, the biggest sponsorship.

The coming season is a big one for the Slammers. The team is hosting

the Frontier League All-Star Game on July 12.

The event includes three days of activities, and the Slammers earlier this year announced a partnership with Mistwood Golf Club, which will host a golf outing at its Romeoville course.

Mistwood also will host the Frontier League Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony at the Grand Ballroom at Joliet Union Station.

The Slammers also have added a second youth baseball tournament for the summer. The team is pursuing youth tournaments to attract more travelers to Joliet. Teams will come from Indiana and Wisconsin as well as Illinois.

The Slammers have added a Royalty Night on July 22 in addition to its two Princess Nights, for which girls dress up as princesses. On Royalty Night, the princesses can bring a prince.

JOLIET – A judge will decide next month if a Monee man will receive prison or probation for a 2013 driving under the influence crash that killed an elderly Mokena couple.

Judge Sarah Jones heard arguments Tuesday for the sentencing of John L. Wiesch, 43.

Wiesch, who pleaded guilty to two counts of John L. aggravated driving un- Wiesch der the influence, faces six to 28 years in prison, but could receive probation if the judge found “extraordinary circumstances” make incarceration unjust. Wiesch is a single father to two girls – ages 13 and 9.

“His wife left him and the kids in January [2013] and if that changed him in such a dramatic way, none of us would be here today,” Will County Assistant State’s Attorney Dan Walsh said.

On Sept. 26, 2013, Wiesch’s Ford F-250 ran a stop sign at LaGrange and Pauling roads near Frankfort and struck the side of a 2013 Toyota Avalon. William Slager, 84, died at the scene and his wife, Harriet Slager, 82, died from her injuries the next day.

“The defendant initially concealed to police he was driving [and] said another person was driving the vehicle,” Walsh told Jones. Witnesses said Wiesch was alone in the pickup.

Walsh also noted Wiesch was arrested for driving under the influence in 2007 in Indiana, but pleaded guilty to a charge of reckless driving when the case went to court.

“Instead of taking advantage of that break, he drove again with fatal consequences to two wonderful people,” Walsh said.

Defense attorney Glenn Jazwiec argued Wiesch has not violated the conditions of his bond – drinking alcohol or driving – while he has been on bond for three years.

“He understands the gravity of this offense. ... He was mired in depression and self-pity when this occurred,” Jazwiec said. “It changed his life for the worse and the better.

He’s taken a positive direction to be a better father because these young girls don’t have [anyone else].”

Parent upset at school district’s response to death threat

fsarver@shawmedia.com CREST HILL – The response from Richland School District 88A officials in an incident involving a death threat against a student has left a Crest Hill parent upset, but officials insist they took the appropriate steps.

On a school bus Monday, a firstgrade student gave his classmate, the daughter of Crest Hill resident Joe Santos, a note stating he was going to kill her and then told her he had a gun.

District officials and Crest Hill police investigated the incident, finding the student did not have a gun.

Superintendent Michael Early said disciplinary action has been taken against the student.

But Santos said that when he was contacted by district administrators, they would not clarify what the note said. He also was frustrated that the district would not inform other parents of the incident.

“It really frustrates me. They’re

not going to do much to reach out to the parents,” Santos said.

Early said district officials erred by not clarifying what the note said to Santos, as he had a right to know.

However, other parents would not be informed of the situation because it was a threat to a specific person and not a larger threat to the district.

“Obviously, we take every threat very seriously,” Early said. “We do our due diligence to follow up to make sure all of our children are safe.”

He said district officials were not aware the boy claimed he had a gun until after the incident when Santos’ daughter mentioned it to her parents, who then notified the district.

Ed Clark, Crest Hill interim police chief, said Santos filed a report about the threat with the police, who investigated and found the student did not have a gun. Police spoke with school officials and parents of both children.

“We take it very seriously. We are in the schools on a regularly basis so the children have safety,” Clark said.

pawn shop in Stickney, but were involved in a traffic accident, Zink said.

Parham allegedly had two baggies of heroin and Xanax pills when he was taken into custody by Stickney police and turned over to Wilmington police.

“Further investigation led [police] to the conclusion that Parham was responsible for both the Ace Hardware theft and the damage to Doc’s Drugs,” Zink said.

Parham, of the 32300 block of West River Road, was booked into the Will County Jail on charges of attempted burglary, shoplifting, vandalism and drug possession. He is being held on $27,500 bond and also has a pending case for a charge of driving without a license.

On Sunday, police went to Northcutt’s residence in the 1100 block of South Buchanan Street, where they found “the packaging from the DeWalt power tools,” Xanax pills and marijuana, Zink said. Northcutt was arrested on charges of shoplifting and drug possession. She is being held in the county jail on $15,000 bond.

Rally seeks blocking of Trump’s EPA nominee More online

fsarver@shawmedia.com BOLINGBROOK – An environmental advocacy group rallied Tuesday in Bolingbrook against President Donald Trump’s nominee for the head of the Environmental Protection Agency.

Trump has picked Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt to lead the EPA. Pruitt has cast doubt on scientific evidence showing the planet is warming and carbon emissions caused by human activity are to blame.

Pruitt has also repeatedly sued the agency since he became attorney general in 2011.

“A fox in the hen house?” one of more than 20 gathered asked at a rally organized by Food & Water Watch at James Boan Woods in Bolingbrook.

The protesters waved signs stating, “Climate change is real” and “No to Pruitt, just don’t do it!”

At a Senate confirmation hearing Wednesday, Pruitt conceded that human activity contributes “in some man-

ner” to climate change but continued to question whether burning fossil fuels is the primary reason and refused to say whether sea levels are rising.

He’s joined a multistage lawsuit opposing the Obama administration’s plan to limit planet-warming carbon emissions from coal-fired power plants and the agency’s expansion of water bodies regulated under the Clean Water Act. “Let that sink in for a moment. Cardoni said that even if Pruitt is blocked, the EPA is still under threat by the Trump administration and people need to keep the pressure on elected officials.

Various groups concerned with the environment have begun to network with each other, said Connie Schmidt, executive chairwoman for the River Prairie Group of The Sierra Club. She said since Trump won the election, The Sierra Club has seen thousands of new members nationally.

“We’re coming out of the woodwork.

People are joining, people are getting involved,” Schmidt said.

Tuminello said. Construction is expected to start soon after formal approval by the county board at its March meeting, he said.

Traffic congestion and safety concerns expressed by New Lenox School District 122 Superintendent Peggy Manville helped “fast track” the project, Tuminello said. The district’s largest campus – with 1,800 students – is located north of the intersection.

NEW LENOX – New Lenox board trustees approved an intergovernmental agreement Monday to establish a new consolidated 911 center at Will County’s new sheriff’s department complex, which currently is under construction. The Laraway Communications Center, to be included in the new $30 million complex at Laraway Road and Route 52 in Joliet, is expected to serve 31 government agencies. These include New Lenox and the New Lenox Fire Protection District, as well as Romeoville, Frankfort, the county’s sheriff’s department and the agencies served by the EASCOM center.

The county approved the agreement at its board meeting last Thursday.

Heading the new center will be Brad Veerman, who currently is director of the Lincolnway Public Safety Communications Center, which at present services New Lenox. Lincolnway will close once the new center is operational.

The plans for the new center follow an unfunded state mandate effective at the beginning of last year requiring counties with populations between 250,000 and 1 million to consolidate and reduce dispatch centers by half.

Will County will now have three cen-

ters, including the city of Joliet’s and WESCOM’s new Plainfield center.

Once approval is received from all interested parties, representatives from each of the agencies will meet Feb. 22 and elect an executive board, New Lenox Trustee Dave Smith said. Smith is chairman of the governance committee for the new entity and wrote its bylaws and the intergovernmental agreement.

The executive board will consist of seven members, including three representing police agencies, three representing fire agencies and a seventh member from the sheriff’s office, according to the agreement.

The agreement also states that each member agency will contribute 10 percent of its share of the initial budget for the first year of operations by June 1.

Smith said the village’s share of the annual $5.3 million budget will be $440,000, slightly more than its contribution to the Lincolnway center.

Each member agency’s share will be determined annually according to its volume of calls to the dispatch center, Smith said. The center will house about 40 to 50 dispatchers and “we are doing our best to keep all our dispatchers,” he said. Smith said that the consolidation process has been a “huge task” and he expects all 31 agencies to be on board before the February meeting. He added

“We’ve done little or nothing in that area for years,” he said. “Until there’s a real program in front of somebody, a lot of this is conceptual.”

Kris Collins, co-owner of Dan’s Homemade Candies, mentioned a Cass Street sidewalk program that improved the neighborhood. But that could have been 25 years ago, she said.

Changes in shopping patterns since downtown was the city’s retail hub have had the biggest effect on business on Cass Street, Collins said. Reversing those patterns will be tough.

“That’s a million-dollar question,” Collins said. “If I had the answer to that, I’d be rich.”

NEW LENOX – Fires at two parks late Saturday and early Sunday destroyed a shed and damaged a fence.

Police reports indicate the fires were set intentionally. It is not known whether the two incidents are related.

The first occurred at 11:18 p.m. Saturday. A fence was discovered burning at Sharon’s Bay Park off Westwind Drive in New Lenox. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire before it spread, Fire Chief Steve Engledow said. At 3:19 a.m.

Sunday, a shed was set ablaze at Lion’s Den Park, 520 S. Cedar Road.

“The shed and all of the contents were destroyed before it was extinguished,” Engledow said.

Cass Street, he said, has some of the same problems as downtown: parking and one-way streets. Free off-street parking would be helpful, Polykandriotis said. But now that he has his own parking lot, one-way streets are his top priority.

“If they really want to improve the entryways downtown, let’s get rid of the one-way streets,” he said. “People who don’t know this town don’t know how to get in and out.”

Casey’s shares spirit of giving with a pickle jar

Shaw Media correspondent MORRIS – Each morning, Morris resident William Sticha walks into Casey’s General Store on Bedford Road for his coffee, pizza and doughnut. And just as faithful as his patronage to the store, he always puts any loose change from his purchase into an old pickle jar on the counter, knowing his contributions will help those in his own community.

“I try to help people wherever. I feel that some people need it, so what are you going to do? People should support and help the poor,” Sticha said.

The old pickle jar sits snugly against a cash register and fills with bills and coins from customers. About every three weeks, store manager Dawn Roy takes the jar into the bank to cash it out.

It usually totals $150, and at its peak, $202.

“I take the jar and while I’m gone – just to the bank and back – customers will come in and ask, ‘Where’s the jar, where’s the jar?’ ” Roy said.

The origin of the collection jar began six years ago, when 91-year-old Casey’s

“Even when we don’t advertise what the money is for, it still fills up every two to three weeks. I would say 95 percent of our customers know what we use the money for, and once in a while people will ask, and we can tell them we use it for local needs.”

employee Wilma Stuckey needed openheart surgery and the customers wanted to help her pay for it. After that, the store began raising money annually for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, the Muscular Dystrophy Association and other causes.

Roy said that when the store wasn’t raising money for one of those campaigns, they would put the jar away, but

after multiple customers questioned its whereabouts, they decided to put the jar back on the counter and raise money to help local organizations.

“I believe we need to help people less fortunate and do what we can to help the community. There are needs everywhere from single parents, people without jobs, families who can’t afford food, and mothers and kids,” Roy said.

Roy said money has gone to local charities such as Under His Wings, which helps young mothers with babies; local schools; Christmas presents for seniors and children in need; and Casey’s neighbor on Bedford Road, We Care of Grundy County.

according to its website. Executive Director Eric Scott Fisher said Casey’s has been an asset to the organization with the pickle jar donations, as well as with its affiliation with yearly fundraisers.

“For example, we buy 40 gallons of milk per week and split the cost with the Northern Illinois Food Bank, so we spend $50 per week on milk. A donation of just $100 will buy milk for two weeks,” Fisher said. “Or the money could help pay a utility bill or buy food for our food pantry.”

Roy said Casey’s also raises funds for the red kettle Salvation Army program and the Souper Bowl soup kettle campaign that We Care of Grundy County hosts each year. In 2016, Casey’s won the Grundy County Souper Bowl of Caring award for the highest number of donations.

“This shows that the business itself cares for the community they are in, and we live in an extremely generous community. They give an ‘all hands on deck’ approach to help the community,” Fisher said of Casey’s community involvement. “You can tell they are engaged in what they are doing and it’s a big deal when the employees are behind it; it creates a neat atmosphere.”

Critics of Senate budget plan multiply; skepticism grows

By JOHN O’CONNOR and KIANNAH SEPEDA–MILLER The Associated Press

SPRINGFIELD – A plan to increase the income tax was adjusted upward slightly and a tax on services such as car repair and laundry surfaced Tuesday even as other parts of a monstrous Illinois Senate plan to end the nation’s longest budget standoff ran into stiff opposition and skepticism grew about its success in a floor vote.

The Senate’s buzz-saw approach – promised bipartisan action by month’s end – to breeching a nearly two-yearlong budget stalemate with Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner sputtered immediately on the day the 13-measure package of legislation was vetted in public hearings. Democrats who control the Senate announced there would be no committee votes – endorsements to send legislation to the floor – but that they’d take testimony and take a different tack to a full chamber vote anyway.

“The goal is to pass the bill,” said Democratic Senate President John Cullerton of Chicago. “This is a tough sell.”

It’s a mammoth proposal, with everything from the income tax increase down to allowing voters more leeway

in merging or eliminating sometimes superfluous units of local government.

But the problem is mammoth: An estimated end-of-year deficit of $5.3 billion in June, $11 billion in past-due bills to vendors and service-providers, and a gap of $130 billion in what’s needed to pay retirees promised pensions.

On top of that, Rauner and Democrats have sparred since 2015 on how to fashion a budget plan. Rauner insists on changing the law to benefit business, limit union power and crimp politicians’ power. Democrats say those discussions should take place apart from how much to raise taxes and cut spending to balance the books.

Rauner’s budget office released an analysis last week that the Senate plan only reduced the year-end deficit by $1 billion. But neither Republicans nor Democrats were surprised, knowing it will take several years to dig the state out of the red. Nonetheless, Olympia Fields Democratic Sen. Toi Hutchinson presented an income-tax plan that increases the personal rate from 3.75 percent to 4.99 percent, instead of 4.75 percent as previously proposed.

And there was no mention of a previously suggested tax on sugary drinks, which drew immediate corporate criticism. But Hutchinson’s revenue plan include a first-ever 5 percent

excise tax on services such as car repair, landscaping or laundry. With a corporate income tax rate increase of 7 percent, up from 5.25 percent, the state would get $6.5 billion more a year.

“The state is in a very difficult position right now and it’s time to start acting like it,” Hutchinson said.

Up until now, and with encouragement from Rauner, it’s largely been portrayed as a herculean battle between the first-term governor and the long-serving Democratic House Speaker, Michael Madigan. Cullerton and Senate Republican Leader Christine Radogno saw a chance to stake a Senate-only position in the mire, if only to jump-start talks among the governor, House and Senate leaders which have led nowhere.

But the strike-fast-and-heavy approach has yet to materialize. Republicans balked at a quick vote to send a statement earlier this month; Tuesday, there were jitters on both sides.

Hutchinson defended her measure,

which drew 112 separate notices of interest-group opposition to the Revenue Committee, against criticism that it’s “rushed.” And Democratic Sen. Kwame Raoul, the Chicago Democrat whose support for cost-saving changes to the workers’ compensation system is crucial, complained about making difficult decisions while Rauner has lawmakers “under the gun.”

“It’s not so much that the administration has us under the gun as that we have no budget,” replied Elmhurst Sen. Chris Nybo, the committee’s ranking Republican. “We owe more than we spend and businesses are leaving in droves. That’s the gun that I see we’re under.”

Other provisions include a plan to borrow $7 billion to pay down overdue bills. There’s a long-sought and huge cost-saving overhaul to the state’s pension program, a vast expansion of legalized riverboat casino gambling, a fairer way of funding public schools, an increase in the minimum wage, and Rauner would get his wish with measures such as a two-year property tax freeze, cost-reductions in the workers’ compensation program, more efficient and cheaper state purchasing and allowing voters more leeway in eliminating local governments in Illinois, which has nearly 7,000.

She retired from Silver Cross Hospital where she worked for 43 years in the Housekeeping Department. Mary was a faithful parishioner of St. Bernard Catholic Church for over 65 years.

Surviving are her two daughters, Carol Costa (Ronald) Aeschliman of Tucson, AZ and Elizabeth Grobarcik (Fred) Nahas of Elwood, IL; one son, James F. He also enjoyed cooking, fishing, he listed to listen to old school music, Smokey Robinson, Bill Withers, James Brown, just to name a few Jerome was a friendly, loving person. He would joke around with people he knew; cousins, aunts uncles, you name it. He’s going to be missed by many. He is preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Ronald Smith, Jr. Jerome is survived by six siblings, Eugene Fred Smith, Calvin Smith, Brian Smith, Sabrina Gyenfie, Twana Smith and Esther Smith; nieces, nephews, and numerous relatives.

Man gets prison time in celeb nude photo hack The ASSOCIATED PRESS

CHICAGO – A Chicago man was sentenced Tuesday to nine months in prison for hacking the electronic accounts of 30 celebrities and stealing private information, including nude videos and photos.

Edward Majerczyk, 29, also was ordered to pay $5,700 in restitution for counseling services for one undisclosed celebrity victim whose photos were disseminated online.

Majerczyk is accused of orchestrating a phishing scheme that illegally accessed more than 300 email and other online accounts, including those belonging to actress Jennifer Lawrence.

According to his plea deal, Majerczyk sent emails to his victims that appeared to have come from internet service providers seeking usernames and passwords. Chicago Blues Festival moving to Millennium Park

CHICAGO – The 34th annual Chicago Blues Festival is getting a new home this year in the city’s lakefront Millennium Park after being held in Grant Park.

City organizers said Tuesday that headliners for this year’s festival will be Billy Branch and the Sons of the Blues, Gary Clark Jr., William Bell and Ronnie Baker Brooks. A full schedule will be announced this spring.

The free festival will be from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. daily from June 9 to 11. Headliners will play at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion.

This year’s festival will features the contributions of rap, rock, pop and hip-hop on blues music. Grammy and Academy Award-winning musician and Chicago native Che “Rhymefest” Smith on opening night will perform a tribute to the influence blues has had on rap and hip-hop.

Video gambling leads to growth in revenue

CHICAGO – A new report shows that roughly 3,000 video gambling termi-

nals opened in Illinois last year, generating growing profits for some communities.

The figures released by the Illinois Gambling Board also reveal that gambling revenue rose from $228 million in 2015 to $277 million during 2016, the Chicago Tribune reported. This growth comes as state lawmakers decide whether to expand gambling as part of a wide-ranging budget plan.

The report finds that customers poured more than $1 billion more into terminals this year than they did in 2015. But the number of video terminals opening each year has slowed considerably since becoming legal in 2012.

A 2016 Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability report also cautioned that video gambling negatively impacts state casino revenues – especially around Chicago – by increasing competition for customer dollars.

Services set for police officer killed in crash

BLOOMINGDALE – Funeral services are being held for a suburban Chicago police officer who died after crashing an SUV while responding to a call.

WLS-TV reported that a visitation for Bloomingdale police Officer Raymond Murrell is scheduled Tuesday in West Chicago.

A police escort will take the 27-year-old’s body from the funeral home in Roselle to

Wheaton Bible Church in West Chicago, where the wake will start with a walkthrough for law enforcement officers.

Murrell’s funeral will be held at the church on Wednesday.

Murrell was killed in a one-vehicle crash on Thursday. Bloomingdale Police Chief Frank Giammarese said Murrell was on the force less than a year.

He described Murrell as a “shining star” and said he and other officer were recently recognized for saving a heart attack victim.

Trump signs taken down in Chicago have gone missing

CHICAGO – Two Chicago street signs honoring President Donald Trump that were pulled down after the then-candidate characterized the city to a “war zone” have gone missing.

Mike Claffey of the city’s Department of Transportation said he doesn’t know what happened to the signs since they were taken down last month after the City Council voted to remove them.

The signs had been displayed on posts near the Trump International Hotel & Tower in downtown Chicago.

New proposal aims to protect pharmacy customers

CHICAGO – In an effort to increase pharmacy accountability and ensure public safety, Gov. Bruce Rauner is calling for stronger regulations for pharmacy consultations in Illinois.

The governor said an investigation conducted by the Chicago Tribune revealed flaws in the state’s current pharmacy system that puts patients at risk.

The investigation, published in December, found that 52 percent of 255 independent and chain pharmacies tested sold potentially dangerous drug pairs to reporters without a warning.

“Our team conducted an immediate review to find out what pro-active steps state government could take to address those gaps,” Rauner said in a statement.

The proposal submitted to the Illinois Register would demand pharmacists to advise patients about risky drug combinations and other important issues when changing a prescription or buying a medication for the first time.

State law only requires a pharmacist to offer recommendations to a patient at the cash register, with a brief inquiry, such as, “Any questions for the pharmacist today?”

Trump advances Dakota, Keystone XL pipelines

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump moved swiftly Tuesday to advance the controversial Keystone XL and Dakota Access oil pipelines, signing executive actions to aggressively overhaul America’s energy policy and deal a sharp blow to Barack Obama’s legacy on climate change.

Obama had personally halted the Keystone XL project, which was to bring oil from Canada to the U.S., and major protest demonstrations have frozen work on the Dakota pipeline.

Trump, in his continuing effort to undo the past eight years of a Democratic president, invited the Keystone builder, TransCanada, to resubmit its application to the State Department for a presidential permit to construct and operate the pipeline. The company said it would reapply.

Obama halted the proposed pipeline in late 2015, declaring it would undercut U.S. efforts to clinch a global climate change deal that was a centerpiece of his environmental agenda.

Trump also ordered the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to quickly review and approve construction and easement requests for the Dakota Access pipeline, a project that has led to major protests by American Indian groups and their supporters.

“From now on we are going to start making pipelines in the United States,” Trump said from the Oval Office, where he also vowed to require the actual pipe for Keystone to be manufactured in America.

The 1,179-mile Keystone XL pipeline would run from Canada to Nebraska, where it would join other lines already leading to refineries along the Gulf Coast.

Trump directed the State Department and other agencies to make a decision within 60 days of a final application and declared that a 2014 State Department environmental study satisfies required reviews under environmental and endangered species laws. Environmental groups promised a legal challenge, arguing a new application requires a new review.

State Department approval is needed because the pipeline would cross the northern U.S border.

As a practical matter, the Dakota Access project likely is to be completed first. The company building it said it is complete except for a section that would pass under the Missouri River near a camp in North Dakota where pipeline opponents are demonstrating.

WASHINGTON – The Senate confirmed President Donald Trump’s pick for U.S. ambassador to the United Nations by a decisive margin Tuesday as Republican-led committees paved the way for three more of his Cabinet nominees to be approved just days into the new administration.

South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley won strong support for the U.N. post despite her lack of foreign policy experience. Senators voted 96-4 on Haley’s nomination.

Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee, the Republican chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, said Haley is a proven leader who will be a “fierce advocate” at the U.N. for American interests.

But not everyone was sold. Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del., said Haley didn’t convince him that she’ll serve effectively. The U.S. ambassador to the international body should be an expert on international affairs, Coons said, “not someone who will be learning on the job.”

A Senate vote is expected soon on Trump’s choice for secretary of state, former Exxon Mobil CEO Rex Tillerson. The Foreign Relations Committee narrowly approved his nomination Monday, 11-10. No Democrats on the panel voted for Tillerson.

Tillerson’s bid got a key boost when Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., announced his support Tuesday. Manchin, who

faces re-election in 2018 in a state that backed Trump heavily in the presidential election, said Tillerson’s extensive business career “will bring a unique perspective to the State Department.”

The vote on Haley capped a day when the GOP-led panels endorsed Trump’s choices to lead the Transportation, Housing and Commerce departments.

Yet congressional Republicans criticized Democrats for not moving quickly enough on all of the president’s selections.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California, the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, forced a one-week delay – until Jan. 31 – of the committee’s vote on Trump’s attorney general nominee, Sen. Jeff Sessions.

Feinstein said senators “owe it” to the more than 1 million women who marched in Washington and other locations on Saturday to be careful in considering Sessions’ nomination and his willingness to protect equal rights.

She also said the committee received 188 pages of new material that needs to be reviewed. Committee rules allow any member of the panel to delay a vote.

Deliberations over two of Trump’s picks turned testy as both nominees faced questions from Democrats over their personal finances. Rep. Tom Price, R-Ga., the president’s choice for health secretary, defended his decision to invest in health care companies as he testified before the Senate Finance Committee.

INDIANAPOLIS – A school board member in Hillary Clinton’s hometown resigned after making a derogatory reference on Twitter to the female anatomy in describing women marching against President Donald Trump. An Illinois teacher was pulled from the classroom for tweets deemed sexist. And a freshman Indiana lawmaker was inundated with criticism over a Facebook post mocking “fat women.”

These are a handful of examples from across the U.S. of mostly male public officials who have been reprimanded, called out or disciplined over social media postings about the women’s marches around the globe last weekend.

The rash of incidents, which range from boorish to downright vulgar, highlight how nasty political discourse has become since the divisive presidential election. But in an era when Trump made lashing out against “political correctness” central to his appeal, the consequences these officials face for unfiltered use of social media once again demonstrates that what you say on the internet still can hurt you.

“Very few people in public life, even today, get away with what Trump was able to get away with,” said Michael Cornfield, a George Washington University professor who studies politics in the internet age. “I wonder what these gentlemen were thinking.”

It’s not the first time rantings on social media have sparked backlash.

Public officials for years have found themselves in trouble, and even resigned from office, over comments that were impolitic, distasteful and sometimes even racist. It’s also not strictly a partisan issue. A writer for Saturday Night Live was suspended this week after writing an offensive tweet about Trump’s 10-year-old son, Barron. The writer, Katie Rich, deleted the tweet, briefly deactivated her account and then apologized after a social media outcry led to calls for a boycott of the show.

Still, the number of incidents after the women’s marches, which packed public squares in blue states and some red as well, has put a few elected officials and supervisors in an awkward spot. And it’s not clear where to

draw the line.

In Indiana, Republican House Speaker Brian Bosma said he’s conducting social media tutorials after posts from at least two state lawmakers.

A weekend Facebook post by Indiana state Rep. Jim Lucas, a Republican, showed a photo of a woman sprayed in the face with pepper spray with a caption that read: “PARTICIPATION TROPHIES. NOW IN LIQUID FORM.” Another post by newly elected Indiana state Sen. Jack Sandlin, also a Republican, credited Donald Trump with getting “more fat women out walking than (former first lady) Michelle Obama did in 8 years.”

Sandlin, who said he didn’t knowingly make the since-deleted post, was inundated with criticism on his Facebook page and has apologized. He says the incident was a powerful lesson on the “unintended consequences” of opening up “your social media to try to get it out as broadly as you can.”

Bosma partially blamed “the Twitter storm created by our president” which he said “makes people feel this is an appropriate vehicle to communicate.” He added: “We’re elected officials, we’re held to a higher standard.”

On Monday, Dathan Paterno, a school board member in Park Ridge, Illinois, where Hillary Clinton grew up, abruptly resigned after he called the protests a “farce” by “vagina screechers” on Twitter. Paterno, who did not respond to a request for comment, later deleted his social media accounts, district Superintendent Laurie Heinz said. He wrote in his letter of resignation that the tweets were “understandably misinterpreted.”

In the Quad Cities, along Illinois’ western border, a teacher was “removed from the classroom” for posting a view of women that “does not reflect the values” of the school, district officials said in a statement. The teacher, Mark Kaczmarek, tweeted a photo of a 1950s housewife, and commented that the protesters “all went home to make dinner.”

One online petition called his tweet “unacceptable” while a rival petition said there is “no proof” that he “ever engaged in any kind of sexist, racist or even homophobic hate speeches in his classroom.” A person who answered the phone at a number listed to Kaczmarek declined to comment.

Withdrawal from TPP hurts Illinois farmers

On Monday, President Donald Trump signed an executive order withdrawing the United States from the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a 12-nation trade agreement that took years to negotiate.

The TPP includes Canada, Australia, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Peru, Vietnam, Chile, Brunei, Singapore and New Zealand. Countries including Colombia, Indonesia, Phillippines, South Korea, Thailand and Taiwan have expressed interest in joining the agreement.

“Great thing for the American worker that we just did,” The Associated Press quoted Trump as saying as he signed a notice in the Oval Office.

Many people celebrated the U.S. withdrawal of the trade pact. But its demise probably will not be cheered by many farmers.

In fact, farm bureaus from coast to coast, including in Illinois, had supported the TPP. Farmers depend on overseas trade for about 33 percent of their income, according to the Illinois Farm Bureau website. With a collapse in grain prices after a 2012 high-water mark, delinquency rates on farmland and production loans have risen.

The trade deal was expected to bolster farm incomes by opening overseas markets to an additional $357 billion in crop exports. Overall, U.S. incomes were expected to rise by $131 billion, and worldwide income was projected to grow by $492 billion, with the U.S. being the largest beneficiary.

Illinois is among the top three agricultural exporting states. In 2014, Illinois farmers sent $1.4 billion in soybeans and soy products overseas, an additional $1 billion in feeds and fodder, and $1.5 billion worth of pork, beef, dairy wheat and processed foods.

In fact, 46 percent of Illinois exports go to TPP countries, including 55 percent of Illinois goods.

The United States already has free trade agreements in place with five of the countries that were part of the TPP. The remaining nations clearly are willing to negotiate trade deals.

Trump came to office promising to negotiate better deals for America and its workers. We know of no harder workers than America’s farmers.

Fair agreements on free trade can provide economic benefits to people around the world. They also reduce the chance of war between nations.

Trump administration officials say the TPP was the wrong framework, in part because it put small-market countries on equal footing with an economic giant such as the United States.

However, American farmers did stand to reap significant benefits. We urge the president to seek alternative means of encouraging trade and opening markets to agricultural and other exports from Illinois and the rest of the country.

Central and Lakewood Falls Elementary Schools held highly successful food drives. The Plainfield Moose Lodge #2491 invited its members to donate to a toy drive and the Needy Family Drive was the grateful recipient of many of those donations.

Plainfield High School – Central Campus teachers Darren Kobliska, Matthew Clark, Jonathan Pereiro, and Patrick Hanley – challenged 20 of their classes to a donation drive and together they raised $2,268 in cash donations.

PHSCC students donated another $10,500 in clothing.

Additionally, for the fourth year, Mr. Clark designed and sold “ugly Christmas T-shirts” to PHSCC staff as a fundraiser. Mr. Joseph Conklin’s special education students held fundraisers.

Bolingbrook captures showdown against its old rival Joliet West

dgoss@shawmedia.com BOLINGBROOK – The Bolingbrook boys basketball team is No. 1 in the state in the new rankings.

Joliet West is in the top 10.

Tuesday night’s nonconference showdown on the Raiders’ floor did not disappoint.

Bolingbrook went on two big runs in the first half and kept Joliet West at arm’s length the rest of the way en route to an 84-74 victory.

“This was fun, tons of fun,” Bolingbrook 6-foot-6 senior forward Malik Binns said. “We played hard. We knew it would be exciting, and it was.”

“I love playing against West,” Bolingbrook forward Nana Akenten said, referring to the Tigers leaving the SouthWest Suburban Conference after last season and joining the Southwest Prairie.

“When we found out they were leaving the conference, I was bummed. When we found out they were on our schedule as a nonconference game, we were happy. They have really good athletes.”

Of course, so do the Raiders. Sophomore guards Joseph Yesufu and Tyler Cochran were huge all night long, but especially in the two big runs the Raiders put together in the first half.

It was 7-5 game when Bolingbrook (17-0) went on a 12-0 run to lead 19-5 with :58 left in the first quarter. However, West outscored the Raiders, 122, over the rest of the quarter to pull within 21-17 at the break.

“Our sophomores really stepped up,” Akenten said.

“We were a little concerned, starting two sophomores and a junior,” Bolingbrook coach Rob Brost said of

Yesufu, Cochran and Kaleb Thornton. “But they all played well. The two sophomores in a game like this, that’s all part of growing up. I can’t say enough about the two sophomores and Kaleb.”

Yesufu made 10 of 12 free throws in the fourth quarter and scored 19 points. Most notable, he was a plus29 in the first half, which ended with

the Raiders on top, 45-31. Bolingbrook outscored West by that much in the first 16 minutes with him on the floor.

In the second half, West kept battling back but never could get over the hump. The closest the Tigers got was a 79-73 deficit with 35 seconds left.

The Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association named Lewis’ Mitch Perinar the MIVA Offensive Player of the Week after he hit .449 (42 kills, 7 errors, 78 attacks) to help the No. 6 Flyers to a pair of five-set victories over both No. 15 Penn State on Friday and St. Francis (PA) on Saturday.

The Minooka graduate notched a career and team-season high 27 kills, while hitting .478 in the five-set win over St. Francis.

Those 27 kills are the second-most in the country for a five-set match this season. The redshirt sophomore opposite hitter finished with 29.5 points, including five block assists.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL Brefford honored again: For the sec-

ond time this season, JJC’s Deesha Brefford has been recognized as the NJCAA’s Division III Women’s Basketball Player of the Week.

The Wolves freshman guard also earned Region IV player of the week honors after averaging 26.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 2.5 steals.

MEN’S SWIMMING Lockport’s Speechley cited: Lock-

port graduate Jake Speechley finished in the top three in all of his eight events to lead Augustana to a third place finish at the Grinnell Invitational.

With his efforts, Speechley was named the CCIW men’s Swimmer of the Week. Speechley won the 100 freestyle (0:47.81) and was a part of the 200 freestyle relay (1:27.02), 200 medley relay (1:36.74) and 400 freestyle relay (3:11.71) teams that all took first place.

We pride ourselves in second-chance points; obviously, they are good at it, too.”

Binns was especially troublesome to West in the second half, when he scored 10 of his 20 points and grabbed eight of his nine rebounds. Akenten also finished with 20 points and had eight rebounds. Cochran scored 11 and grabbed 10 rebounds, seven on the offensive end as the Raiders held a 17-10 edge in offensive boards.

“Hats off to them,” DiForti said. “They did a great job penetrating. We like to take it to the rim, too. At times we had a hard time finishing at the rim, and that made a difference.”

West lead guard Teyvion Kirk led all scorers with 26 points, including 15 in the second half and nine in the fourth quarter, as he did all he could to get the Tigers back in it. Bell finished with 21.

“We were fortunate enough to win,” Brost said.

“They’re very good and very well coached. We just made a few more plays than they did.

“Our conference prepares us for games like this. Every game is like this. There are no easy ones.”

Brost said the Raiders downplayed all the hoopla about rankings, the television coverage of the game and the full house and went about their business.

“What’s important is what we do the next day,” he said.

West lost to another of the state’s top teams, Whitney Young, last Saturday.

“We have little things that we need to work on,” DiForti said. “We’ve played a lot of spotlight games, and this can only help us.

“Granted, we are 0-2 in the last two games, but we aren’t walking away saying we need to make any drastic change. Nobody wins the state championship in a game in January.”

Butler, Milazzo lead Minooka’s comeback win

cherron@shawmedia.com CHANNAHON – It’s always a challenge for a team to defeat the same opponent twice within the span of a few days.

Minooka’s boys basketball found that out in Tuesday’s Southwest Prairie Conference game, but to their credit, they managed to recover from a bad start and then overcame a late rally

by Plainfield East to pull out a 57-53 victory.

With Antonio Milazzo scoring 12 of his 15 points in the second half, the Indians (16-6, 5-2) used a 25-2 outburst to overcome a 33-19 deficit early in the third quarter against the Bengals (315, 1-7). And Jonny Butler scored 16 of his game-high 22 points in the final half to help the hosts pull out the win after East claimed a pair of leads in the late stages.

“We weren’t happy with the way that we played in the first half, but we like to call each other a family, so we told each other to stick together and we came out and fought for each other,” Milazzo said. “I thought that we played really well in the second half.

“You can’t take any team in the SPC lightly since every night it’s a battle. We’ve been really bad in front of our home fans and they deserve to see better. But we’re looking to coming back on Friday and then we have a stretch of three or four games before the seeds come out to play well. I like that we have really good chemistry, both on and off of the court.”

After the Indians delivered what looked like a knockout punch, which began with a 15-0 run and then featured a 10-0 spurt that extended into the final quarter to go up by 44-35 with 5:52 left, it was difficult to imagine seeing the Bengals mounting a comeback.

But East immediately responded with an 11-0 burst to move in front at 46-44 with 3:24 to go. Vinny Tarello scored 15 of his 17 points during the quarter, including eight in the key run.

After a Butler layup with 1:10 left to give the hosts a 52-48 lead, Tarello hit a 3-pointer and a short while later made two free throws to give East a 53-52 advantage. But Butler tossed in a trey with 19 seconds left and then assisted Kyle Graebner (seven points) on a layup with just five seconds remaining to close out the scoring.

“So it was nice that our kids were able to respond and knock down some big shots. It’s the sign of a good team when you don’t play your best basketball and still come away with a win.”

After Butler converted a threepoint play and Milazzo hit a trey to tie at 14-14 less than a minute later, Michael Ransom (eight points) hit a free throw, a layup and a trey and Scott Olsen (eight points, six rebounds) made a 3-pointer to give East a 23-14 lead.

Minooka, which also got six points from Keegan Graebner, pulled to within 23-19 on a trey from Adrian Paige (five points) but the Bengals, who also received six points from Yamani Shareef, closed the half with a 7-0 run to claim a 30-19 halftime advantage.

“I’m extremely proud of this team,”

East coach Branden Adkins said. “We didn’t play very well on Friday but we watched some film and corrected some mistakes and obviously we only had a few days. For the amount of grittiness and the way that they came together today.

“Our record is not what we want it to be but for us at the end of January and on a losing streak to come out and compete like they was great.

We talked before the game about not giving up and to keep fighting. Our first quarter was outstanding and we made a lot of their guys struggle. We struggled to score in the third quarter, but they also made some shots.”

BOYS BOWLING STATE PREVIEW

Tradition is a big part of high school sports in the Joliet area, and one sport that has built a tradition in a very short period is boys bowling.

The 15th state finals will be contested Friday and Saturday at St. Clair Bowl in O’Fallon.

In the 14 previous championships, the Joliet area has had at least one team finish in the top 10 each year and has captured two team titles – Plainfield South in 2010 and Lockport in 2013.

Also finishing in the top three at state were the Porters (2009), Lincoln-Way Central (2008) and Lincoln-Way East (2007). Four individuals have won titles with Lockport’s Kyle Anderson going back-to-back in 2010 and 2011, the only bowler to win twice. Shane Matejeck also won for the Porters in 2013 and Joshuan Glover from Lincoln-Way West won in 2014.

Minooka, Lincoln-Way West and Lockport will represent the area in the team competition this year.

The Indians, who won their third sectional title in the past four years, have a veteran squad with state experience. They are making a fifth consecutive trip to O’Fallon.

“There is good and bad when you have the experience that we have,” Minooka coach Derrick Rapsky said.

“The good is the experience that you have. They are comfortable with the situation, there are no surprises in what goes on. The bad is that with a veteran group, there is the added pressure. They realize there is no next year. This is it.”

One of the mainstays for Minooka over the last four years has been Kai Devine. He will be competing in his fourth state finals.

“We have to look at it as one ball, one frame and one game at a time,” Devine said. “Make reasonable shots and pick up the spares. I’m truly blessed to have had the teammates I’ve had over the last four years.

Thinking about this as a senior, you have mixed emotions. This will be the last time we ever do this and I’m sure those thoughts will be there at some point.”

Lockport also will be making its fifth consecutive appearance, but with a much less experienced team.

The Porters graduated a majority of their fourth-place team from a year ago. They also have the distinction of joining Alton and Andrew in having the most individual all-state bowlers with eight.

Senior Andy Sims and junior Alec Buchhaas are the only two who have bowled at the state finals.

“We will have five bowlers who have never experienced this atmosphere,” Lockport coach Ron Davis said. “Adrenaline and nerves will be a big part. You have to stay even, never too high or never too low. Sometimes this group drives me crazy, but they listen and have worked extremely hard to be where they are. I’m really proud of what they have done this season.”

The new kid on the block this year is Lincoln-Way West. The Warriors qualified for the first time as a team.

“Our goal at the beginning of the year was to make it to state,” Warriors coach Scott Ullian said. “We want to go and just have fun and take in the entire experience. Our goal would be to make it to Saturday. It’s one step at a time. We have depth on this team and have had a great season, so you just never know what can happen.”

The Joliet area also will be represented by five individuals – Alex

Acosta (Bolingbrook), Jack Baggs (Plainfield North), Jacob Hubbs (Romeoville), Colton Marks (Lincoln-Way East) and Jordan Chavez (Providence Catholic).

Acosta, a junior, will be making his second trip to the finals.

“It’s nice to be going back, but I really wanted to qualify as a team,” Acosta said. “I have experience and this year I know what to expect.”

Baggs will be heading back to O’Fallon, where he bowled last year as a member of North’s 10th-place team.

“This year I need to find a line quick and make the spares,” Baggs said. “Don’t do any scoreboard watching. The only thing you can control is how you bowl and just stay in the zone.”

Hubbs, a senior, will be making his first trip to the finals and has one goal in mind.

“I want to be all-state, any place is fine with me,” he said. “This is my first time. You just do what you have to do. It’s just bowling and something

we all have done a million times.

The big thing is not to give up at any time.”

Also making his initial state finals is Griffins senior Marks.

“This is an exciting time for me,” he said. “You just have to stay consistent and bowl one game at a time. You never know what can happen.”

Chavez is the first boys bowler to qualify for the finals in Celtics’ history. He missed by two pins of being one of the seven individuals to automatically qualify from the sectionals.

He then had to wait until Monday afternoon to learn whether the IHSA selected him for one of the two at-large bids for the finals.

“There was a lot of emotion and anxiety from the time he knew he just missed to finding out he made it,” Providence first-year coach Kevin Kullman said. “Jordan takes a lot of pride in his work and we found out on the way to practice on Monday. That practice was a little sweeter. Jordan wants to make the cut and bowl Saturday, then it’s game on.”

Perrantes leads No. 12 Virginia over No. 14 Notre Dame

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – London Perrantes scored 22 points and No. 12 Virginia pulled away late for a 71-54 victory over No. 14 Notre Dame on Tuesday night, the Cavaliers’ 10th straight win over the Irish.

Isaiah Wilkins finished with 13 points and nine rebounds, and Devon Hall added 11 points and nine boards for the Cavaliers (16-3, 6-2 Atlantic Coast Conference), who improved to 4-1 on the road in league play and inched one-half game closer to conference leaders Florida State and North Carolina.

Perrantes capped a 7-2 second-half spurt with a 3-pointer with 9:24 left, and Ty Jerome followed just over a minute later with a 3 to give Virginia its largest lead to that point, 53-44. After the Irish edged back within five, Jerome knocked down another 3, followed with a runner in the lane, and Perrantes’ fifth 3-pointer got the Virginia lead into double digits with just under 4 minutes to go.

Virginia’s vaunted defense kicked in midway through a low-scoring first half, holding the Irish scoreless for 41⁄2 minutes and without a field goal for nearly 6 minutes. But after a 10-2 Cavaliers’ run put them up by seven, Notre Dame battled back within 27-26 at halftime.

Coming off a career-high 30 points in Saturday’s win over Syracuse, Irish forward V.J. Beachem went 1 of 10 from the field and finished with just three points.

No. 15 Wisconsin 82, Penn State 55: At Madison, Wisconsin, Bronson Koenig scored 20 points Tuesday night and No. 15 Wisconsin shut down Penn State in the second half on its way to an 82-55 victory.

The Badgers (17-3, 6-1 Big Ten) started to shake off the Nittany Lions (11-10, 3-5) after Ethan Happ came alive.

He struggled in the first half, shooting 2 of 6 from the field, in part because Penn State’s Mike Watkins blocked him twice in the span of about 5 minutes.

But Happ asserted himself to open the second half, scoring on the Badgers’ first two possessions to spark a 13-2 run that put Wisconsin up 52-38 on Vitto Brown’s 3-pointer. They wouldn’t be threatened the rest of the way.

Brown finished with 16 points, while Happ added 14 and eight rebounds.

Penn State shot better than 52 percent in the first half, the second-best any team has put up against the Badgers to open a game this season. That

included 6 of 10 from behind the 3-point line, helping make up for the Nittany Lions’ nine turnovers.

But things went downhill quickly in the second half as they opened 4 for 18 on their way to shooting 27 percent over the final period. One sequence seemed to sum up their struggles. Watkins could not convert an alley-oop pass, and the Nittany Lions gathered the offensive rebound. But Shep Garner, who was 3 of 3 from behind the arc in the first half, air balled a long 3 attempt out of bounds.

No. 22 Maryland 67, Rutgers 55: At College Park, Maryland, Melo Trimble fueled a second-half surge that put No. 22 Maryland in control, and the Terrapins beat Rutgers, 67-55, on Tuesday night to remain in first place in the Big Ten. Trimble scored 17 points and freshman Kevin Huerter had 11 for the Terrapins (18-2, 6-1), who own their best record after 20 games since the 1998-99 season.

Facing a team that has never won a conference game on the road, Maryland led only 38-35 shortly after halftime before Trimble took over. He threw an outlet pass that led to an easy layup, then drilled a 3-pointer. Huerter followed with a 3 to make it 46-35 – too big a deficit for Rutgers to make up.

No. 20 Purdue 84, Michigan St. 73: At

East Lancing, Michigan, Caleb Swanigan had 25 points and 17 rebounds, helping No. 20 Purdue pull away to beat Michigan State, 84-73, on Tuesday night.

The Boilermakers (17-4, 6-2 Big Ten) have won three straight, helping them have their best eight-game record in the conference since 2010-11.

The Spartans (12-9, 4-4) have lost three straight and four of five, forcing them to turn it around soon to improve their chances of playing in a 20th straight NCAA Tournament.

Wichita State 87, Southern Illinois 45:

At Wichita, Kansas, Markis McDuffie scored 14 of his 20 points in the first half and grabbed nine rebounds as Wichita State routed Southern Illinois, 87-45, on Tuesday night to win their third straight.

Darral Willis Jr. had 15 points and Shaquille Morris 10 for the Shockers (18-4, 8-1 Missouri Valley), who haven’t lost at home to the Salukis since Feb. 8, 2011.

Sean O’Brien scored 12 for the Salukis (11-11, 4-5), who have lost three straight.

Oswego East, however, also is a pick-your-poison proposition.

Battle and Schultz both scored in double figures, but the Wolves’ guards got theirs, too. Oswego East hit eight 3-pointers. Plainfield North transfer Amaya Johns hit a 3-pointer, then Thomas hit back-to-back from distance to open up a 48-31 lead in the third quarter.

“They’re the complete package, and they’re deep,” Waznonis said.

“They’re tough to stop.”

“We’ve struggled a little bit shooting since the Geneva game (Jan. 16), and we’ve been talking about it in practice,” Wolves coach Abe Carretto said. “We hit our shots [Tuesday].”

Oswego East swept the season series, taking the first game, 70-45, but Jenkins left Tuesday with a good vibe.

“It’s never a good feeling to lose, but I feel OK with how we played,” Jenkins said. “They just knocked down shots.”

Bulls ride Wade and Butler to win over Magic

ORLANDO, Fla. – Dwyane Wade scored 21 points, Jimmy Butler added 20, and the Bulls beat the Orlando Magic, 100-92, on Tuesday night for their second straight victory.

Facing an Orlando team that was missing three of its four top guards, Wade and Butler took full advantage with drives to the basket and pull-up jumpers as the Bulls pulled away in the fourth quarter.

The turnover-prone Magic simply could not keep pace with a Bulls team that is going through point guard issues of its own with the surprising benching of Michael Carter-Williams.

Nikola Vucevic had 20 points for the Magic, who have dropped two straight and 11 of their past 14 games.

The teams exchanged leads early in the third quarter before the Bulls began attacking the paint to extend their lead to 78-73. Robin Lopez had a couple nice hook shots in the paint, and then Butler got going late in the quarter to help the

Bulls get a little separation.

The Bulls took advantage of Orlando’s lack of guard depth in the first half with Wade and Butler both hitting big shots, but Doug McDermott did the most damage with four 3-pointers from the wings for a team-high 12 points off the bench.

With the backcourt depleted because of injuries, the Magic couldn’t come up with enough bodies to stay in front of Wade and Butler, who both had eight points in the first half as the Bulls took a 52-49 lead into halftime. Wade went after seldom-used Mario Hezonja on three straight possessions for six straight points at the end of the second quarter.

Tip-ins: Bulls: The Bulls shook up their point guard position before Tuesday night’s game. Jerian Grant started in place of Carter-Williams. Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg said Carter-Williams has been demoted and will come off the bench. Hoiberg did not immediately name a backup, although Rajon Rondo was the first off the bench.

PLAINFIELD – Olivia Jenkins found herself in an unusual position Tuesday night.

Looking up.

It doesn’t happen often, but Plainfield East’s 6-foot junior forward/ center relished matching up with Oswego East’s Division I posts Ty Battle and Sydney Schultz.

“I like the challenge,” Jenkins said. “Most of the people I play against are smaller. I don’t often face girls who are taller than me, who are versatile and have their ability.”

Jenkins more than held her own.

She scored 19 points, grabbed four rebounds and also dished out a few assists. Plainfield East hung close for a half against Class 4A’s 10thranked team before succumbing to the Wolves, 69-47, in Plainfield.

Lotanna Onua added 14 points and 10 rebounds for Plainfield East (18-7, 6-4). Jesinde Thomas scored 14 points and Battle, an Indiana State recruit, had 13 points and 13 rebounds for Oswego East (19-3, 10-0).

The Bengals actually led throughout the first quarter, and still were up, 17-16, moments into the second quarter after Kennedy Collins’ 3-pointers. Oswego East turned up its defensive pressure, forcing 15 first-half turnovers to go into halftime ahead 34-23, but when Jenkins followed her own miss, Plainfield East only trailed 37-27.

From there, however, the Wolves ripped off a 15-6 run, and the Bengals never recovered. Oswego East has not lost in the Southwest Prairie the past two years, and no team has stayed within single digits this season.

“I told the girls we played good, but good against them isn’t going to cut it,” Plainfield East coach Tony Waznonis said. “They’re a state championship-caliber team. You have to play great.”

Jenkins’ skill set is pretty great for a post, and she showcased it throughout Tuesday’s game.

She knocked down a baseline jumper for the game’s first score, and was just getting started. She scored six of her 19 in the first quarter, and Onua had eight of her 14.

MYSTERY DINER

Metro Grill & Bar has expansive menu MYSTERY DINER JOLIET – Kids love mac and cheese, we know that.

The boxed kind, made by a large food conglomerate.

Just because we get older, doesn’t mean we have to give it up.

We just wanted it to be more elaborate, taste a little better and have it be made with better ingredients.

So, while there are a ton of more expected restaurant items on the menu at Joliet’s Metro Grill & Bar, I went all in on the smoked bacon and Gouda mac and cheese.

For explanation purposes, I didn’t go chronologically here.

But that’s just because the mac and cheese was so unexpected, under the menu label of “comfort food” along with meatloaf and corn cakes, turkey and stuffing and fish and chips.

But I actually started with the house-made monster meatball appetizer, which is a half-pound meatball with meat sauce, Parmesan and Parmesan bread triangles.

It was outstanding, but I chuckled about it being listed under “small bites” in the menu because it’s absolutely not that. Everything from pulled pork sliders to wings to fried pickles, mozzarella wontons and smoked Gouda and bacon spinach dip are on that part of the menu.

The meatball was everything that was advertised, huge and delicious.

But it also put a big dent in my future food intake, meaning at least half of the huge plate of mac and cheese was going home with me. But that’s not a bad thing.

It allowed me to take my time as I wandered through a beer flight that included Kentucky Bourbon Ale, Boulder Shake Chocolate Porter, Lagunitas’ A Little Sumptin Sumptin Ale and Schlafly’s Christmas Ale. The chocolate porter was a sweet place to start and the Kentucky Bourbon Ale gave the flight a strong finish.

As for the mac and cheese, it was better than expected.

The huge plate was overwhelming at first sight, but as I dug in I remembered why I had made the choice.

I like pasta, I remember mac and cheese fondly and this dish was enough to bring both back to life with adult sensibilities. It had content.

And it had staying power, because the next day it was pretty darn good too.

the guy next to me asked the bartender if she had ever seen someone finish the mac and cheese, because he always brought home half, too.

She had, but it was rare.

I could have gone after the expansive list of paninis, from French dip to pulled pork to ham and cheese, or burgers, pasta, chicken or steak.

I could have chosen ribs, wraps or salad.

But I went all in on the kids meal that doesn’t taste like a kids meal.

And I’m not afraid to admit it (though I’m anonymous here) or do it again.

A 2015 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) looked at 14 different clinical trials of marijuana use by multiple sclerosis patients and found relief from chronic pain, nerve pain and muscle spasm. Another study published in 2015 in JAMA looked at 28 different studies with 2,454 patients and found a 30 percent reduction of pain with cannabis-related products compared with placebo.

Opiates can relieve pain in the short term, such as after surgery or an acute injury.

But due to their addictive potential and lack of long-term benefit, opiates are not a good choice for long-term pain relief.

Marijuana is not without its own potential risks and side effects. These include short-term memory loss, poor motor coordination, paranoid thoughts and, for some, psychosis. Long-term use also can create the potential for addiction, but not to the degree of opiate medications. Also, overdosing on marijuana doesn’t lead to death, as it can with opiates.

My suggestion in regard to chronic back pain is to try other methods of pain control over opioids. These include physical therapy, yoga and stretching. If these don’t work, marijuana is an option, but beware of its side effects – and try to minimize its use.

Dear Doctor: I try not to use opioids for my chronic back pain, but I’m finding myself turning to them more often. Could marijuana help?

Dear Reader: Pain is one of most difficult aspects of medicine to understand. No one actually can feel the pain of another person, but we can see the suffering it causes. As doctors, we try to alleviate pain in a number of ways.

Opiates – starting with opium, which is derived from the poppy plant – have been used for pain relief for more than 3,000 years.

The opiates morphine and codeine, also from the poppy plant, were isolated and made available in the early 1800s. Since that time, multiple synthetic opiates such as hydrocodone and oxycodone have been widely used for pain. These drugs attach to opiate receptors in both the brain and spinal cord.

One problem with opiates is they relieve pain in the short term, but will not control it in the long term. Thus to relieve chronic pain, a person perpetually has to use the medication – creating one of the addictive aspects of the drugs. The other problem with opiates is people become tolerant of the medications, meaning with consistent use, a person needs more medication to relieve the same amount of pain.

For these reasons, opium and its progeny have been abused worldwide. The United States is facing an epidemic of opiate abuse, with prescription opiate medication leading to a rapid increase in lethal drug overdoses.

In 2014, more than 18,000 people died from overdosing on prescription opiates, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Marijuana also has been used for more than 3,000 years. It works through the endocannabinoid system of the body, which has receptors in the brain and spinal cord as well as the immune system. The receptors in the brain and spinal cord can decrease muscle
