Grundy County Fair – Mazon Beginning in the early 19th century, the first agricultural fairs in America gave rural citizens the opportunity to see the latest agricultural technology, techniques, equipment, crops and livestock, all of which were useful for the local farmer.

Over time, these agricultural fairs began to incorporate other activities for rural families, including recreational, educational, competitive and social activities into their festivities. By the 1880s, the county and state fairs became a popular annual event and local tradition.

In the Midwest, the county fair would be a reflection of the local interests and values of the surrounding community.

Fairs were often a welcome distraction from the normally quiet rural life of most Americans. Soon, fairs became highly anticipated events in many counties and states. Many farm families even planned their schedules around the fair in order to attend and work there.

For many people who attended the annual event, the fairs would mark the first opportunity to witness electric lights, hot air balloons and even airplanes. Other unique inventions also were on display at county and state fairs, including washing and sewing machines, printing presses and stereoscopic pictures.

In time, entertainment became an important component of both county and state fairs, especially during what is known as the golden age of agriculture fairs (1870 to 1910).

At some fair locations, one-half-mile oval tracks were constructed for harness and horse racing, which become extremely popular by the turn of the century.

Trotting and pacing competitions, bicycle races and eventually automobile races took place around these same tracks. Fair organizers often even built grandstands to accommodate the large crowds that would come to see the races and performances.

In the early decades of the 20th century, the postcard provided an exciting attraction to county fairgoers across America.

OLD POSTCARD IMAGES SOUGHT FOR PUBLICATION David Belden is a history teacher at Minooka Community High School and currently is publishing local postcard books with Arcadia Publishing in his Local History classes. He and his students are looking for old Joliet photos and postcards, and images from Joliet’s parks, for a new publication.

Real photograph postcards were often taken “while you wait” and featured the fairgrounds, crowd scenes, the grandstands or other unique features seen at the fair. This was the time that counties had set aside land as a permanent, lasting site for these annual events.

Locally, citizens and farmers of Mazon came together and held a colt show on the main street of the town in 1904. This colt show proved to be such a success that

Over the past 100 years, the Grundy County Fair has grown because of the hard work and dedication of many people.

For nearly 65 years, the fair was located in Mazon. Beginning in 1971, the fair was moved to its current location north of Morris.

QUEST FOR FELLOWSHIP Wizard’s Chamber dazzles with objects, lights, puzzles

fsarver@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Four brave souls entered a dark room filled with curious objects inside The Wandering Dragon Game Shoppe and had less than an hour to leave.

The room was “locked” – although it’s not really locked – and the four participants who were there Jan. 14 heard the voice of Alexavier the Faithful, the wizard of the chamber inside the Plainfield game store.

“Let’s see, who do we have here? Ah,

courageous adventurers embarking on a quest,” Alexavier said.

When the timer began, the four had to use their creativity, critical thinking and teamwork skills to solve a series of puzzles involving wooden swords, chains, books, hidden symbols and other items to escape.

As it got down to the wire, the group was close to solving all of the puzzles, but it was too late. One of the creators of the escape room, Ross Wheeler, opened the door.

“You were so close!” he said.

“This is amazing,” said Marissa Ostrego, one of the participants.

The Wizard’s Chamber escape room is an entertainment offering at The Wandering Dragon that launched in November. Escape rooms are fun, interactive adventures, and the Plainfield store’s room is fit for three to six players, according to the store website.

Wheeler and his family are the creators of the escape room. It proved to be a tough one to crack for the group, who required clues – helpful notes slipped under the door – to get them through.

At home and work, Paul Blough made everyone feel welcome

LOCKPORT – Paul Blough died while occupied in the tasks that made him happy – a privilege reserved for few.

“He said ‘hello’ to a worker, and minutes later he was passed,” said Debbie Blough, Paul’s wife. “He truly took his last breath at his desk.”

Paul co-owned Paradise Bay Bar and Grill in Lockport with his in-laws, Bob and Trisha Kot, after they bought it 15 years ago, Debbie said. Paradise Bay is a neighborhood bar that sells “good homemade food,” she added.

Previously, when Paul lived in Chicago, he managed bowling alleys that had bars. But he always dreamed of owning a bar, Debbie said. Paul’s family room at home even had a jukebox, which he’d roll out whenever company called.

“He liked to be a host, a party-thrower,” Debbie said. “He had a big, big personality. He got people to sing and dance and just be at home.

‘Piano Man,’ that was his song. We knew he had a good voice, but he’d say, ‘Yeah, I’m OK.’ ” Paul’s genuine spirit endeared him to others.

“He was very welcoming, with open arms. He did not hide his feelings. He just made everyone feel comfortable,” Debbie said.

At Paradise Bay, Paul hosted rib fests and trips to White Sox games.

He donated to local events. He sold beer and wine at weekly car shows in Lockport, Debbie said. He was an “expert party planner and tailgate party extraordinaire,” a teller of stories and jokes with a “contagious, friendly laugh and smile,” Paul’s daughter, Jodie Lindstrom of Lockport, said in an email.

“

Each year, Paradise Bay hosted the annual Nick-a-Palooza for the Nick Kot Charity for TBI. Paul was Nick Kot’s uncle; Bob and Trisha were his parents. At age 18, Nick had a traumatic brain injury and died three years later in 2003.

It didn’t matter to Paul who was in need. If someone asked, Paul gave. If it furthered commonality, Paul was in.

“It’s amazing how many people he touched,” Debbie said. “He had such an effect on the community.”

Paradise Bay employee Katie Sheehan of Chicago said she’d known Paul and his family since she was 4 years old and called Paul her “second dad.” Sheehan studied culinary arts, so when Paul bought the bar, he asked the newly graduated Sheehan to run the kitchen.

As an employer, Paul was generous, fair and hands-off. Sheehan said she appreciated his trust in her.

“He made me feel like I was part of the Bay,” Sheehan said.

Paul approached fatherhood less gregariously. Lindstrom said via email that the jolly and loving man also exemplified a strong work ethic, put all four of his children through Catholic school and sported a “my way or the highway” attitude.

Although Paul often was absent on the home scene because of work, he told his children daily that he loved them and that he was proud of them.

He never spoke ill of anyone and helped anyone in need, Lindstrom said in the email.

Paul later became a very present grandfather – one who baby-sat, changed diapers and “rarely missed a soccer or baseball game, school program or concert or a debate team event,” Lindstrom said in the email.

In past years, Debbie said, other relatives portrayed Santa to surprise the grandchildren. But in 2015, Paul, who had worked in college as a mall Santa, decided to do it himself.

Paul delighted them by learning the words to “Steppin’ Out With Santa Claus,” the song they had sung during their school program. The fact no adults present knew the song didn’t daunt Paul.

“He brought the words to pass out so people could sing along,” Debbie said. “Then Paul went into the ga-

rage, cut his hair and beard and came back as Papa.”

Paul was 61 when he died Nov. 2.

Paul’s family will continue running Paradise Bay and working hard to keep his spirit alive, Debbie said. They’re thankful for countless memories.

“He’s just missed,” Sheehan said.

“I feel it’s going to be that way for a very long time.”

Student of the month more than just a title Student of the month programs are very popular at schools, and why shouldn’t they be? The programs provide opportunities to recognize those students who go above and beyond.

In addition to great grades, different schools recognize students for things such as exemplary attendance, leadership, improvement, cooperation, good attitudes and community involvement.

We see the names of students of the month listed on school marquees, noted in the newspaper or on school websites, and they typically get recognized at school board meetings.

Minooka Junior High School is taking its program a step further and erected a wall of plaques outside the office, which will feature all of its students of the month, including a photo.

Recognizing students in a school that has a population of more than 1,000 kids can mean a lot to those who aren’t going to hit that top rung but are good

“A lot of times these are kids who are doing well but would get overlooked,” Minooka Junior High Principal Sarah Massey said.

The Minooka Junior High program recognizes two outstanding eighthgrade and two outstanding seventh-grade students each week for the Aspiring to be Respectful, Responsible and Opportunistic While focusing on Safety and success program. Students of the month are selected from those individuals.

Massey said she had to call a parent of one of the students of the month, and when the parent realized it was a positive phone call, she was not only

relieved but proud her child had been chosen.

Those are the good moments in our children’s lives.

Minooka Intermediate School has a very similar program.

“We are very fortunate to have a Lions Club who sponsors all the students of the month,” Massey said.

Minooka Community High School Director of Community Relations Dave DiLorenzo coordinates the student of the month program for the Channahon-Minooka Rotary Club.

Students are rated by staff members on the five core values of Rotary International: service, fellowship, diversity, integrity and leadership.

Staff members also rank students on their academic achievements, respect for MCHS peers and staff, participation in athletics or activities, and how they serve as a role model.

Programs such as these are one

more way to help students prepare to be good adults in the future.

The Rotary program takes into account many facets of a student instead of just one area in his or her life, DiLorenzo said.

“You have to give back to the community at large and conduct yourself with integrity and respect,” DiLorenzo said.

High school students also are honored at a Rotary Club meeting every month.

“What I really admire is the award takes into account service to the community, which is something even adults can struggle with,” DiLorenzo said, noting that the hope is students will carry those community values into adulthood.

Minooka high school board considers library needs, enrollment projections with report

Shaw Media correspondent MINOOKA – School librarians are more important today than ever. That was the message the Minooka Community High School District 111 Board heard Thursday evening as certified school librarian Carolyn Kinsella gave her annual report.

With the enormous amount of information and data available to students on the internet, she said, students need even more instruction on how to determine if the information is good, solid fact.

“Certified school librarians are a great weapon against fake news, post truth and click-bait,” Kinsella told the board.

Information literacy especially is important going into college. Kinsella said a new study found that 80 percent of students in college have overwhelming difficulties getting started with research projects, and half had uncertainties assessing the quality of their research.

They can’t even evaluate the trustworthiness of web posts, she said.

Minooka Community High School District 111 librarian Kinsella presented the board with goals she hopes to achieve in the next two years before she retires. One was to help institute a schoolwide curriculum that includes teaching students the importance of validating information and how to solve problems and address issues through authentic research.

She also addressed the need for a second certified librarian at the school.

Kinsella currently divides her time between both campuses. The number of students using the South Campus library in fall 2015 was 18,950. In 2016, it was 22,452.

Central Campus saw 16,804 student library visits in 2015 and 26,306 in 2016.

Assistant Superintendent of Business John Troy also had some numbers to give the school board. Estimates for future student enrollment at the high school are in, and the projected number

of students for the 2017-18 school year is 2,789. Enrollment this year is 2,727.

Just five years ago, enrollment was 2,517.

Considering current enrollment in the feeder schools of Channahon School District 17, Minooka Community Consolidated School District 201, Troy Community Consolidated School District 30-C and parochial schools, Troy said the conservative calculations call for the high school enrollment to increase the next two years, then decrease the next two years before it picks up again to 2,790 in the 2020-21 school year.

After the meeting, Troy said those numbers are a static picture of what the district might expect.

“Housing permits are going up,” he said, “and a lot of them are in [Minooka School District] 201. ... As 201 goes, District 111 will follow.”

Troy added that considering growth in Minooka, he doesn’t expect there will be a dip in enrollment two years from now, as the numbers currently predict.

The student population likely will continue to grow.

“We certainly have the space to accommodate additional students,” he said.

The District 111 board Thursday also considered next year’s school calendar, which would have the first day of student attendance be Aug. 14. The calendar will be up for official approval at a future meeting.

Community Relations Director Dave DiLorenzo also told the board that applications soon are due for juniors and seniors who would like to work internships at local businesses through the Grundy Economic Development Council this summer.

There will be 42 internships with 17 different companies this year, he said.

Some are paid and some are unpaid.

“These internships provide students with a wonderful opportunity to get real-life experience in a given area of study,” DiLorenzo said, “prior to going off to college.”

Crash Champions to open new facility this year “It was always the intention [to open a bigger facility] when I went to Plainfield. This was a couple years in the making.”

mmallory@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Vehicle collision repair business Crash Champions is in the process of constructing a new 20,000-square-foot facility in Plainfield at the corner of Route 59 and Hazelcrest Drive.

“That’s just huge,” Plainfield Mayor Mike Collins said at his State of the Village address Wednesday.

Crash Champions president and CEO Matt Ebert said Friday that the facility will be larger than the average repair shop, “for sure.”

The company has been in business in New Lenox since 1999 but began expanding a couple of years ago.

It opened a shop on Riverwalk Court in Plainfield, just north of the DuPage River on Route 59. There also are locations in Mokena, Crestwood and Chicago.

Now, Crash Champions will move about a half-mile north, to 14022 Route 59.

Crash Champions has set a goal of opening its new state-of-the-art location April 1.

It was planning to use an existing structure, but learned that it wasn’t sound enough to remodel.

“That actually delayed the project quite a bit,” Ebert said.

Collins said the property was annexed into the village years ago, when it was home to a drywall company. It had been vacant for several years.

“It will be an asset to the village,” Collins said. “It will spruce up that area, and we can always use a tax base.”

Early voting underway for Homer Township Republican primary

Any registered Homer Township voter can cast a Republican ballot from now until Feb. 27 at the Will County Clerk’s Office, 302 N. Chicago St. in Joliet, according to a news release from the office.

The Feb. 28 election is a primary, and only the Republican ballot is available.

The Homer Township Administration Building, located at 14350 W. 151st St. in Homer Glen, will be the only other early voting site for the election. Early voting starts at the township location Feb. 14 and continues until Feb. 24.

Metra fare increase begins Feb. 1

The HERALD–NEWS JOLIET – It is the common season for illnesses such as norovirus, according to a news release from the Will County Health Department.

Norovirus recently was reported in some Kane County schools, with St. Charles East High School having to cancel classes for a couple of days.

Dr. Alpesh Patel, of the health department, stated in the news release that the illness is spread by contact with an infected person or infected surfaces, and that the virus can survive on surfaces for many hours.

Norovirus usually begins with profuse vomiting and diarrhea.

CHICAGO – Metra is reminding its customers that a fare increase goes into effect Feb. 1, according to a Metra news release.

The Metra Board of Directors in November approved an increase across all fare types to generate $16.1 million to fund the agency’s extensive backlog of capital needs, the news release stated.

The fare increases include: • One-way tickets: Customers will pay 25 cents more per ticket, or 2.4 percent to 7.1 percent more depending on the Metra zone. If these customers take the train 30 times a year, they will pay an additional $7.50 annually to ride Metra.

• Ten-ride tickets: Customers will pay $2.75 more per ticket, or 2.9 percent to

8.9 percent more. That works out to an additional 27.5 cents a trip.

• Monthly passes: Customers will pay $11.75 more a month, or 4 percent to 12.3 percent more. That works out to about 27 cents more a trip and $141 more annually to ride Metra.

• Reduced-fare tickets: Customers eligible for reduced-fare tickets will pay an additional 25 cents for a one-way ticket, an additional $1.50 for a 10-ride ticket and an additional $7.50 for a monthly pass.

Science, technology, engineering and mathematics teams from Dirksen, Gompers, Hufford and Washington gave a “Shark Tank” presentation of their plans to develop vacant proper-

Wheeler said his family had been to The Wandering Dragon to play games – loving its atmosphere and the customers – and approached the owners with the idea of putting in an escape room.

Wheeler and his wife, Elizabeth Wheeler, are teachers in Aurora and

Newark, respectively. He said she’s a published author, and he is a theater professional.

“With her writing skills and our theater background, we thought ‘We can do this,’ ” he said.

And it turned out to be a perfect fit for Kevin and Laura Martin, who coown the game store.

Kevin said the escape room ties with the rest of the store, which was established in 2012 and is a destination for tabletop and board gaming, along

with gaming events.

“There was a group we had a couple of weeks ago that came out and they said they’ve been in over 10 of them and this was their favorite one,” Kevin said.

Laura said the escape room is appealing to adults and children, and a couple of bookings for it have been for birthday parties. “[The Wheelers] did a great job making it family-friendly,” she said.

designed to have people work together as a team and build fellowship.

“You have to prove yourself worthy by finding fellowship and bravery and trust,” he said.

Kevin said the escape room is a great match for The Wandering Dragon.

“That’s why we wanted to do something like this in Plainfield. We love the whole community and how everyone just gets together and has a blast in the [escape room],” he said.

“Things these students are proposing today could come to fruition in the next 10 to 15 years,” program coordinator Natalie Coleman said.

At age 50, he got his GED, obtained his real estate license and taught himself to swim; at 90 and 93 he golfed his own age; at 96, he taught himself to keyboard so he could send emails on his iPad to friends and family; at 100, he travelled to British Columbia to vacation with family; at 102 he won his last euchre game at his birthday celebration.

Louie worked as a machinist for several years at Pines Engineering then Uniroyal, and retired from Global Wire. During his career he also operated Louie’s ConsumerHardware in Elwood, and sold real estate.

He was an active parishioner of the Cathedral of St. Raymond for over 60 years, and was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Elks Lodge. Louie was also an avid golfer.

Louis and his beloved wife of 70 years, Eugenia M. (nee Austin) Bank, were married November 22, 1941 and made their home in Aurora for 20 years until relocating to Joliet, where he has been an area resident until the present. Genie preceded him in deaths on April 21, 2012.

Louie was the loving father of the late Margaret Katt, Linda (Dave) Bates, Carol (Tim) Smith, Bill (Mary Jane) Bank, Chris (Paula) Bank, Warren (Amy) Bank, the late Leo Bank, Mary (Bob) Barney, Mike (Lauri) Bank and Bernie (Mark) Sienko; proud grandfather of 21 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren; and fond brother to Elizabeth (late Delbert) Dixon. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews; and a son-in-law, Dave (Dale) Katt.

He was preceded by his parents, his wife, his son, Leo; his daughter, Margaret; and eight brothers and sisters.

Maggie Roche of The Roches Charlie Liteky, who gave back his Medal of Honor, dies sister vocal trio dies at 65

NEW YORK – Maggie Roche, the folk-rock singer-songwriter who since the mid-1970s had performed and recorded as a trio and in pairs with her two sisters, has died.

Roche died of cancer, according to a statement posted online Saturday by her sister and bandmate, Suzzy Roche.

She was 65.

Growing up in Park Ridge, New Jersey, eldest sister Maggie formed a duo with middle sister Terre, and while touring, they caught the attention of Paul Simon, who brought them in as backup singers for his hit 1973 album, “There Goes Rhymin’ Simon.”

In 1975, they released an album of their own. Shortly after that, youngest sister Suzzy joined to form The Roches trio. The voices of this threesome blended majestically, with Maggie’s rich contralto balanced by Terre’s soprano and Suzzy filling in the midrange.

They played Greenwich Village folk venues and, in 1979, released the well-received “The Roches,” the first of their dozen albums as a trio, and were booked on “Saturday Night Live.”

With “We,” the first song of that debut album, they charmingly introduced themselves, with acoustic guitar backup, to the listening world: “We are Maggie and Terre and Suzzy. / “Maggie and Terre and Suzzy Roche. / “We don’t give out our ages, and we don’t give out our phone numbers. / “Sometimes our voices give out.

But not our ages and our phone numbers. / .

“And as a point of interest, we spell our name R-O-C-H-E.” Their final studio album, “Moonswept,” would be released in 2007. Maggie also recorded albums as a duo with sister Suzzy.

Maggie and her sisters would never be a big draw or huge sellers. But their unique sound and sensibility, plus their endearing quirkiness, was cherished by a devoted following over the decades.

The statement from Suzzy Roche, who, with Terre, survives her, describes their “dear, beautiful sister Maggie” as “a private person, too sensitive and shy for this world, but brimming with life, love and talent – a brilliant songwriter, with a distinct unique perspective, all heart and soul.”

SAN FRANCISCO – Charlie Liteky, an Army chaplain in Vietnam who was awarded the Medal of Honor for rescuing more than 20 wounded men but later gave it back in protest and became a peace activist, has died.

Longtime friend Richard Olive said Liteky died Friday night at the Veterans Administration Hospital in San Francisco. He was 85.

The army awarded Liteky the highest military decoration for his actions on Dec. 6, 1967, when his company came under intense fire from an enemy battalion in Bien Hoa province.

Despite painful wounds in the neck and foot, Liteky carried more than 20 men to the landing zone to be evacuated during the fierce firefight.

“Noticing another trapped and seriously wounded man, Chaplain Liteky crawled to his aid,” the Army’s official citation reads. “Realizing that the wounded man was too heavy to carry, he rolled on his back, placed the man on his chest and through sheer determination and fortitude crawled back to the landing zone using his elbows and heels to push himself along.”

He left the priesthood and in 1983,

married former Catholic nun and peace activist Judy Balch in San Francisco. His wife introduced him to refugees from El Salvador, “teenagers, whose fathers had been killed and tortured. I didn’t believe it, but I kept going to more and more of these meetings, and it became clear these people weren’t blowing in the wind,” Liteky told the San Francisco Chronicle in a March 2000 interview.

Twenty years after his heroic actions in Vietnam, Liteky left the Medal of Honor – awarded under the name of Angelo J. Liteky – and a letter to President Ronald Reagan at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington in protest of the country’s foreign policy in Central America, where U.S.backed dictators were fighting bloody wars against left-leaning rebels.

After that, Liteky spent years protesting against the U.S. Army School of the Americas, an academy at Fort Benning, Georgia, where the U.S. Army trained soldiers from Central and South America and the Caribbean. He was sentenced to one year in federal prison in 2000 for entering the school without permission and splashing its rotunda with their own blood.

There are no plans for a funeral, Olive said.

BLOOMINGTON – When Gabe Spalding talks about time traveling light waves, holograms and tractor beams, it might sound like the stuff of science fiction.

But the research being done by Spalding, Illinois Wesleyan University’s Ames professor of physics, has potential down-to-earth applications – from helping doctors see inaccessible parts of the body to helping motorists see through fog.

The fog issue is personal for Spalding. Years ago, his uncle, a milkman, drove his truck off the road in the fog.

The impact caused the milk containers to shift forward, crushing and nearly killing his uncle, recalled Spalding.

“The next generation of cars will have new ways to assist drivers,” he said.

In fact, Spalding said he is meeting soon with the CEO of Rivian Automotive, which last week finalized the purchase of former Mitsubishi auto assembly plant, to talk about student projects and internships.

Spalding does his research at IWU and with collaborators in Scotland, mostly engineers and surgeons. He involves his students in the work, too.

State treasurer seeks payout of unclaimed life insurance

PEORIA – A measure backed by Illinois’ treasurer could help ensure that insurance companies have paid out money properly to beneficiaries of life insurance policies.

The proposed legislation would require companies to examine the past 20 years of their records to ensure that money was distributed properly, the (Peoria) Journal Star reported.

State Treasurer Michael Frerichs said the measure is important for individuals who don’t know they have funds owed to them.

“We think there are tens if not hundreds of millions of dollars more that should be paid out to the loved ones, the heirs or beneficiaries, of Illinois life insurance holders,” Frerichs said.

Two were in Arizona last week presenting research papers at a conference.

One, Toan Le, a senior in physics from Vietnam, is working on the project that involves “seeing” through fog.

Le described it as reconstructing images of hidden objects.

“The project provides a wide range of application in biomedical as well as

in vision systems for self-driving cars and remote-imaging systems,” Le said via email from the conference.

“A lot of the applications do take a long time. You can’t be motivated just by the end goal,” said Spalding, explaining the challenges of his research. “The students that work on these things are equally motivated by little steps.”

Frerichs’ office has been working with about 20 of the largest companies that sell such policies in Illinois. So far, there has been about $500 million found in unpaid life insurance benefits.

Not all such companies cooperated with the efforts of the treasurer’s office.

Some of the insurance businesses weren’t responsive, and others told the office they didn’t want to participate.

Free tax preparation available to low-income residents

SPRINGFIELD – The state of Illinois is offering free income tax preparation and filing for low-income residents.

Illinois Department of Human Services Secretary James Dimas said the services are available across the state to families with incomes up to $55,000 and individuals who earn up to $30,000 annually.

The service is a partnership between the state and tax assistance centers across Illinois.

Dimas said more than 29,000 people used the free service last year.

Judge: Ban on shackling child suspects adds costs

ROCKFORD – A chief judge in Northern Illinois said more officers are needed to comply with an Illinois Supreme Court rule banning the automatic shackling of juvenile suspects in state courtrooms.

The Rockford Register Star reported that Judge Joe McGraw is asking the Winnebago County Board to approve money to hire four additional officers.

McGraw said it will cost $50,000 to pay the officers through Sept. 30. After that the annual cost is estimated at $205,000.

McGraw said two officers are needed to accompany a juvenile in the courtroom and two to transport them between the detention center and downtown courtrooms.

Board member Gary Jury said the county doesn’t have the money.

He said the request is the result of another “unfunded state mandate” and may result in a tax increase.

In one of those recent steps, using specialized cameras, “We made a movie of something going backwards in time,” he said. At least, that’s what it appears to do.

The pulse of light used in the “time travel” experiment is about half the width of a single human hair. But to understand how it works, visualize a much wider beam shining up at a surface that’s at an angle.

The light will hit the lower end of the angled surface first, then “travel” to the upper end. But if a camera is positioned at that upper end, it will actually see the light at the upper end first, even though that light arrived later. This gives the appearance of moving backward.

If you shine a light on a convex surface – one curved outward toward you like a pillar in a building – the light will appear to move in two directions, away from each other. If the surface is concave – curved inward – the light will appear to move together and annihilate each other.

Spalding said these effects had been predicted, but nobody had ever done it before these high-speed cameras were used.

“The experiment demonstrates the capabilities of these cameras” and their ability “to look at processes too fast to see” otherwise, he said.

Normal council seeks legal opinion on 45-day gag rule

NORMAL – A central Illinois city that restricts speakers at council meetings is seeking advice from the state attorney general.

Normal limits speakers to one appearance every 45 days. City Manager Mark Peterson told The Pantagraph that the council likely will follow the attorney general’s opinion.

The restriction might violate the Illinois public meetings law.

Mayor Chris Koos said officials didn’t anticipate that some residents would have something to say at every meeting.

He calls it a “prudent rule.”

Council member Scott Preston said email might be a more effective way to reach the mayor and council, although he doesn’t see a need for the 45-day restriction.

Council member Kathleen Lorenz said the Bloomington council has a less restrictive policy and sometimes has trouble moving through the meeting agenda.

Amid hostile start, Trump delivers unifying message

WASHINGTON – After a combative start to his presidency, Donald Trump delivered a more unifying message Sunday and sought to reassure Americans he was ready to begin governing a divided nation.

Trump began rolling out his plans for diplomatic outreach, speaking with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and announcing plans for early meetings with Netanyahu and other world leaders. He thanked top law enforcement officers for their service and support. And he swore-in a group of aides, telling them he believed they were ready to rise to a daunting task.

“But with the faith in each other and the faith in God, we will get the job done,” Trump said in a ceremony in the White House East Room. “We will prove worthy of this moment in history. And I think it may very well be a great moment in history.”

Trump’s reassurance came after a day marked by global protests against his presidency and his own complaints about media coverage of his inauguration, a combination of events that made for a contentious first full day in office on Saturday.

But even as the White House tried to forge forward, the president’s aides continued to defend the president and his press secretary, both of whom tore into journalists for accurately reporting that his swearing-in ceremony drew a smaller crowd than President Barack Obama did eight years ago. On Sunday, a top adviser said the Trump administration was supplying

“alternative facts.”

“There’s no way to really quantify crowds.

We all know that. You can laugh at me all you want,” Kellyanne Conway told NBC’s “Meet The Press.” She added: “I think it’s actually symbolic of the way we’re treated by the press.”

Trump on Saturday declared he believed “it looked like a million and a half people.”

But ridership on the Washington’s Metro system didn’t match that of recent inaugurations. As of 11 a.m. Friday, there were 193,000 trips taken, according to the transportation service’s Twitter account. At the same hour eight years ago, there had been 513,000 trips.

Four years later, there were 317,000 for Obama’s second inauguration.

Conway also declared that Trump will not release his tax returns now that he’s taken office, breaking a promise he made during the campaign.

As a candidate, he said he would release his returns after an IRS audit was completed. Every president since 1976 has released the information, but Conway said she does not believe Americans care whether Trump follows suit.

“He’s not going to release his tax returns.

We litigated this all through the election. People didn’t care,” Conway said on ABC’s “This Week.”

Trump’s advisers have set Monday up as the president’s first major day of action on his sweeping campaign promises, but as of Sunday night, it appeared as though his team was still making decisions on what moves to make.

Some congressional Republicans had expected Trump to sign orders over the weekend, but those never materialized.

ATLANTA – Matt Ryan tumbled into the end zone, slammed the ball to the turf with a thunderous spike and let out a scream that showed just how much he wanted this game.

He wants the next one even more.

With another MVP-worthy performance and plenty of help from Julio Jones, Matty Ice guided the Atlanta Falcons to a 44-21 rout of the Green Bay Packers for the NFC championship Sunday, a showing that erased any doubts about whether Ryan can win the big games.

In his ninth season, he finally is heading to his first Super Bowl .

Call him Super Matty.

“We’ll enjoy it because it’s hard to get to this point. I know that from experience,” Ryan said. “But our ultimate goal is still in front of us.”

The Falcons (13-5) will face Tom Brady and the Patriots on Feb. 5 in Houston, only the second Super Bowl appearance in Atlanta’s 51-year history. Eighteen years ago, they lost to Denver in John Elway’s final game.

New England, heading to its ninth Super Bowl, blew out Pittsburgh, 3617. The Patriots opened as a 3-point favorite.

Ryan threw for 392 yards and four touchdowns, but it was his 14-yard scoring run – his first TD on the ground since 2012 – that really set the tone.

Jones was right in the middle of things, too. After barely practicing during the week because of a lingering toe injury, he finished off the Packers

Ryan sparked more delirious chants of “MVP! MVP! MVP!” as he carved up an injury-plagued Packers secondary that had no way of stopping a team that averaged nearly 34 points a game during the regular season and romped to a 36-20 victory against Seattle’s Legion of Boom last week.

The stop that forced the missed field goal, followed by the forced fumble, ended all expectations that this would be a steady exchange of scoring drives.

“We’ve come a long way, a long way,” said Collins, who started after Desmond Trufant’s season-ending shoulder injury in November. “People went down and people stepped up.”

The Falcons’ young defense struggled early in the season even as second-year linebacker Vic Beasley led

80 yards in 13 plays, the Falcons converted three third downs, the last when Ryan scrambled away from pressure and flipped a shovel pass to Mohamed Sanu for a 2-yard score.

Aaron Rodgers pushed the Packers quickly into Atlanta territory with a 27-yard pass to Jordy Nelson, who missed the previous game with a rib injury. But Mason Crosby, who hit two field goals longer that 50 yards in the closing minutes against the Cowboys, pushed a 41-yard attempt right of the upright to snap a playoff-record streak of 23 straight field goals.

The Falcons drove the other way, settling for Matt Bryant’s 28-yard field goal and a 10-0 lead. Then, with Green Bay poised to make a game of it, Atlanta’s much-maligned defense – one of the lowest ranked in the NFL – came through a momentum-swinging play.

Fullback Aaron Ripkowski was breaking tackles and rumbling toward the end zone when Jalen Collins stripped the ball from behind and fell on it just across the goal line for a touchback.

“Their offense is hot right now,” Rodgers said. “Playing a team like that, you’ve got to start faster. We had no points in the first half. You’re not going to win many games like that.”

After the fumble, Ryan hooked up with Jones three times for 56 yards and finished it off from the 14 with some surprisingly nimble running skills, faking out one defender with a pump fake before sprawling into the end zone.

“I just saw a lane open up,” said Ryan, who had a 1-4 record in the playoffs over his first eight seasons. “That’s the longest run I’ve had in a while. It came at a good time.”

DON’T FORGET THE DEFENSE

Atlanta’s defense, an afterthought compared to the other side of the line, kept the Packers out of the end zone until the game essentially was locked up.

Rodgers finished 27 of 45 for 287 yards and three TDs, but he also threw an interception, was sacked twice and

faced a relentless Falcons rush.

The Falcons finished with a 493-367 edge in total yards.

DOME FINALE

What a send-off for the Georgia Dome, the Falcons’ home since 1992, which will be torn down and replaced next season by $1.5 billion Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

With the home team comfortably ahead, the raucous crowd of more than 71,000 partied through the second half, bouncing along to rap music that turned the stadium with the big toplike roof into the world’s largest dance club.

The intensity of the celebration was understandable, given the Falcons’ largely forgettable history and the heartache doled out by all of Atlanta’s pro sports teams. The Braves, way back in 1995, are still the city’s only team to capture a big league championship.

Now, the Falcons are one win away from adding another title to that barren trophy case.

ATLANTA – After a week of big projections about the high-scoring offenses in the NFC Championship Game, the big surprise came from Atlanta’s defense.

The Falcons shut out Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers in the first half of their 44-21 win Sunday.

Atlanta earned its second trip to the Super Bowl by muffling one of the league’s most respected offenses.

The Falcons (13-5) led 31-0 before giving up their first points in the third quarter.

For 36-year-old defensive end Dwight Freeney, the win provided evidence that Atlanta’s young defense has matured. The Falcons started four rookies and four second-year players on defense.

“It’s funny because some people say the defense is too young,” Freeney said. “They’re going to make a lot of mistakes. I can look at it from the other side. Those guys are young and have energy and can run. You get them going on the right page and understanding the things they need to understand fast, we can be dangerous.”

One of the rookies, linebacker Deion Jones, put pressure on Rodgers on a third-down incompletion to set up a missed 41-yard field goal by Mason Crosby on Green Bay’s first possession.

the NFL with 15½ sacks. With so much focus on the offense, few noticed when the unit held four of the last six regular-season opponents to fewer than 20 points.

“We went through issues and problems early in the year,” Freeney said.

“It was expected when you have three or four guys that have never played in the NFL before. We had to catch these boys up, and the offense was rolling while these guys were catching up and understanding what they need to do.”

Added Freeney: “Now those boys are playing.”

Rodgers took notice.

“That’s a good defense,” Rodgers said. “They play a simple scheme and they run it really well. They rely on their pass rush and they drop lanes.

They did a good job.”

Rodgers said the missed field goal and turnover on the Packers’ first two drives “hurt the momentum of the game.”

“Playing a team like that, you’ve got to start faster,” Rodgers said. “We had no points in the first half. You’re not going to win many games like that.”

Rookie nickel back Brian Poole led Atlanta with seven tackles and two quarterback hurries. Jones and rookie safety Keanu Neal each had six tackles. Ra’Shede Hageman and Tyson Jackson had sacks.

Poole, Jones, Neal and linebacker De’Vondre Campbell were the rookie starters on defense. Beasley, Allen, Collins and defensive tackle Grady Jarrett are second-year players.

Brady and Patriots win AFC vs. Steelers, advance to Super Bowl

The Associated Press FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The Tom Brady redemption tour is headed to the Super Bowl.

After beginning the 2016 season suspended for four games for his role in the “Deflategate” scandal, the New England quarterback relentlessly carried the Patriots to an unprecedented ninth appearance in the title game, and his seventh. Brady threw for a franchise playoff-best 384 yards and three touchdowns in a 36-17 rout of the helpless Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday in New England’s seventh consecutive AFC championship game.

The Patriots are early 3-point favorites heading to face Atlanta in two weeks in Houston, seeking their fifth NFL title with Brady at quarterback and Bill Belichick as coach. Belichick’s seventh appearance in a Super Bowl will be a record for a head coach.

Brady was banned by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell when New England (16-2) went 3-1 to open the schedule.

Since his return in Week 5, the only defeat came at home to Seattle, and Brady, 39, had one of the best seasons of a Hall of Fame-caliber career. He punctuated that in dreary weather similar to the 2014 conference title game that precipitated the deflated footballs investigation by flattening Pittsburgh’s secondary.

“This is my motivation right here, all these fellas in front of me, these guys,” Brady said, pointing to his teammates and ignoring mentions of “Deflategate.” ‘’The boys showed up to play today.”

Brady’s main weapon was Chris Hogan. The previously unheralded receiver found open spaces everywhere on the field against a leaky secondary. Hogan caught nine balls for 180 yards and two scores.

Top wideout Julian Edelman added eight receptions for 118 yards and a touchdown as Brady tied Joe Montana’s playoff record with nine three-TD passing performances. Brady also had his 11th 300-yard postseason game, extending his NFL record, completing 32 of 42 throws.

“We won a lot of different ways under a lot of different circumstances,” Brady said. “Mental toughness is what it is all about and this team has got it. We’ll see if we can write the perfect ending.”

That didn’t seem to matter much in a record 16th conference-title match for the Steelers, who made mistakes in every facet of the game.

The franchise that has won the most Super Bowls, six, and the most postseason games, 36, never seemed likely to challenge in the misty rain.

“We’ve got to be capable of overcoming those things,” Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said. “Injuries and so forth are part of the game. The reality is we didn’t make enough plays in any of the three phases. The game kind of unfolded in the way they would like it to as opposed to the way we would like it to. Not only in score, but in style of play and so forth.

We didn’t get a lot accomplished tonight.”

Hogan’s second touchdown came on

a flea-flicker and he easily beat safety Mike Mitchell to the corner of the end zone. At that point, Hogan had seven catches for 117 yards and the first multi-touchdown game of his four-year career.

His first score made it 10-0 and came after Brady could have taken a nap before throwing, a common occurrence against a nonexistent pass rush. Hogan was all alone in the back of the end zone for the 16-yard score.

Pittsburgh had drawn to 10-6 on DeAngelo Williams’ 5-yard run to cap an 84-yard drive. Veteran Williams is a nice security blanket in the backfield, though he’s no Bell these days.

Still, he contributed on a 70-yard drive toward the end of the second quarter that appeared to be capped by Jesse James’ TD reception. But video review showed James down at the 1, and the

Steelers couldn’t get into the end zone.

The Steelers never threatened to get back into it. LeGarrette Blount punctuated the romp with a bruising 18-yard run on which he carried nearly the entire Pittsburgh defense with him. He then scored from the 1.

By the end, the crowd was chanting “Where is Roger?” and celebrating yet another Super Bowl trip for the Patriots.

Soon after, tight end Martellus Bennett was boogeying with the cheerleaders, pompoms in hand, and owner Robert Kraft was accepting the Lamar Hunt Trophy.

“For a number of reasons, all of you in this stadium understand how big this win was,” Kraft said. “And we have to go to Houston and win one more.”

Coal City, Wilmington ready for bigger upcoming clashes Although they had been together in two previous tournaments, the wrestling teams from Coal City and Wilmington hadn’t really met prior to Saturday’s Interstate Eight Conference meet.

Entering the medal round, the defending champs from Coal City owned just a three-point lead over host Wilmington. But the Coalers went 9-3 in the finals, collecting bonus points in eight of those matches, to win the title by 26.5 points.

The two sides faced off in seven matches, with Coal City winning four, including the lone clash for a title. Not that the rivals need any extra incentive, but two of the state’s top five teams in Class 1A are headed for a few more exciting meetings in the weeks ahead.

They’ll compete in an auditorium dual on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in Coal City. Next Saturday, they meet in the Wilmington Regional to determine which individuals qualify for the following Saturday’s Coal City Sectional and to see who advances in the dual team series.

Coal City is the top-ranked team in Class 1A after winning titles in two major tournaments that featured most of the top teams in the class, Abe’s Rumble in Springfield (dual meets) and the Princeton Invitational (scored tournament).

At Princeton, it finished well ahead of three-time defending state champion Dakota.

VIEWS Curt Herron That’s a big step for the Coalers, who lost to the Indians in the 2015 semifinals, where they took third, and then fell, 31-30, to Dakota in last year’s title meet.

But while coach Mark Masters and the veterans on his team who experienced those losses have every reason to look forward to another clash with Dakota in this year’s finals, they’re not looking past their next challenge, and they certainly will not take a Wilmington program, that they have great respect for, lightly.

While it’s clear that the Coalers and Wildcats deserve to be in the team state quarterfinals in Bloomington, only one will advance. The same can be said of the Winnebago Regional, where No. 2 Dakota and No. 3 Lena-Winslow are entered.

“For years, Wilmington just owned us,” Masters said. “But it’s called a regional for a reason and that’s the way things are set up. When you live in an area that’s really rich in wrestling tradition, you have to suck it up.

“It’s been a great rivalry. A lot of times in a rivalry, one team has got to win every once in awhile, and for a while, it wasn’t a rivalry. Wilmington was the bully and we were just a little

kid and they beat us down. But obviously, you get tired of getting beaten up.”

The Coalers have worked hard in recent years to become more competitive with the Wildcats and those efforts are paying off.

“We’ve been able to pull more kids into the kids club and more into the middle school and it’s been a positive influence,” Masters said. “We’ve had good coaches from the youth on up and started an offseason program.

We’ve got guys going to a lot of places and have kids from the surrounding schools coming to work with us in the summer, and it’s getting us better.

“We knew that we had to do a better job of coaching our kids and convince our own kids in order to keep them home. We’ve got coaches that volunteer a lot of free hours, but they love the sport. It’s been a long time coming.

It started as a little snowball and it’s rolling right now.”

Ranked fifth in the state, it’s hard to say the Wildcats are down. But with the revival of the Coalers, it will be difficult to duplicate the great success that hall of famer Rob Murphy’s program achieved from 2006-12, when they reached team state each year and won five straight trophies, including three titles from 2007-09.

“Our kids have done a nice job this year and they’re 29-2 and 10-0 in the conference, so Coal City and us will see who wins the dual team conference championship,” Murphy said. “Last

year we squeaked one out and knocked them off, so we won conference duals and they ended up second in the state in duals.

“Last year it was a barnburner at our place and now they’ve got it over at their place. It’s always a big advantage to be the home team in a dual and they have it set up in their auditorium. We’ll be on the stage so it will be an exciting time and our kids look forward to it.”

There’s something about the rivalry that brings out the best in each. Murphy, who was an athlete at Coal City and has coached at Wilmington since 1994, knows that better than most.

“Back when my son (Jake) and coach (Tom) Fritz were wrestling (in 2008), we had three state champs, a second and third and they had three state champs, so six of the state champs in Class A came from 10 minutes apart,” Murphy said. “It’s exciting to see these two little communities doing well.

“Give coach Masters credit since he has a nice team this year. They won that big Abe’s Rumble while we were fourth. And in the tournament, they pulled away in the final round and that’s what you have to do. Our kids like to get out there and wrestle. A lot of them got 50 or 60 matches in the offseason and it started there. The season has gone quick and everyone has had a lot of fun and that’s a credit to them.”

Despite loss, Joliet West still among best VIEWS Dick Goss The Joliet West boys basketball team suffered its first loss of the season to Bloom Township in the quarterfinals of the Pontiac Holiday Tournament.

The Tigers went 12 of 27 from the free-throw line that day and fell, 68-64.

One thought expressed by West fans after that game was, if the Tigers had made their normal number of free throws, they probably would have won.

Then came Saturday. West (17-2) lost to powerful Whitney Young, 73-64, in the When Sides Collide Shootout at Glenbard East in Lombard.

This time, the Tigers were a hardto-imagine 14 of 40 from the foul line, 35 percent. That included missing the last 11 attempts over the final 61⁄2 minutes. You can attend thousands of high school basketball games and never see one team miss 26 free throws, or 11 in succession.

Yet that’s what happened to one of the best teams in the state. It happened to a team that for most of the season has knocked down about two-thirds of its free throws.

At this juncture, all West can do is continue to work on free-throw shooting, which the Tigers practice daily.

As coach Nick DiForti pointed out, they not only practice shooting free throws in general, but pressure free throws as well.

As senior guard/forward Trevian Bell said Saturday, it stinks that the one aspect of the game the Tigers could have done to change the outcome – make their free throws – they did not get accomplished. Missing all those free throws robbed West of a chance to rally and beat a high-profile opponent.

Don’t get the wrong idea. The Tigers remain the quality team that rebounded from a 38-19 deficit late in the first half against Young – which continues to move toward the top of Chicago area rankings – and grabbed leads of 57-56 and 58-57 in the fourth quarter.

West is no more likely, nor less likely, to win Tuesday night’s much-anticipated game at Bolingbrook than before the free throw problems Saturday. After losing to Bloom at Pontiac, remember, the Tigers came back the following day and beat two good opponents, including Curie in the fifth-place game.

“I really have high confidence in this group of guys,” said Bell, who finished Saturday with 19 points and six

“Bolingbrook was going to be a big test, and now it will be even a bigger test.”

If the Tigers make free throws against the unbeaten Raiders, and if they play the way did most of the way Saturday, Tuesday’s game should be as intriguing as billed.

Bell was on his game. Tabyous Casterberry was an inside force in the second half, Teyvion Kirk was active as usual and Eddie Creal pushed the energy level up another notch.

“Eddie is fantastic in what he did today and what he can do,” DiForti said.

My hope for Tuesday is that both teams bring their “A” games. If that happens, we will have the opportunity to witness a late-January state championship-caliber battle.

“We saw what we can do against a team of [Young’s] caliber and we have

bigger games to play,” DiForti said Saturday. “We have no time to lick our wounds, with Bolingbrook coming up Tuesday.”

Bolingbrook and West probably will receive the top two seeds in the Class 4A Lincoln-Way East Sectional. So a rematch could occur in the sectional final. If it does, the winner of that game will be a threat to play in the state championship game a week later.

This is fun, having teams in our area that we legitimately are able to discuss in terms of the state finals.

However, in order to get there, the Tigers or Raiders or anyone else must conquer the mental challenge and make their free throws.

THE WEEKEND

For the weekend, I went 0-3 as I also saw Joliet Catholic Academy’s 49-32 loss to Saint Viator on Friday night and Lockport’s 56-52 triple-overtime

loss to West Aurora on Saturday night.

What Kirk is for Joliet West as the lead guard is not unlike what Matt Smietanski is to Lockport and Jack Surin is to JCA. Smietanski was outstanding as usual in the Porters’ loss, scoring 24 points and doing so much more. Where would Lockport be without him?

On Friday night, we got a good idea where JCA is without Surin, who was sidelined with an ankle sprain. The Hilltoppers are hoping to have him back for Friday’s game against Marist.

They need him.

From a talent standpoint, Kirk is as good as it gets in this area. He is a Division I guard. But what he provides West is not unlike what Smietanski and Surin bring their teams. All three are physical guards who do so much on both ends of the floor.

The Associated Press COLUMBUS, Ohio – Scottie Lindsey said the fact that Northwestern won in Columbus for the first time in 40 years on Sunday was not a huge deal to him. What is huge is another important Big Ten win for the Wildcats, who are pushing for an NCAA Tournament bid for the first time in school history.

Lindsey scored 21 points and Bryant McIntosh had 17 as Northwestern (16-4, 5-2 Big Ten) beat Ohio State, 7472, for a fourth straight win.

“This team, history doesn’t define us,” Lindsey said. “The past things that have happened with this program, it doesn’t really matter to this team. We push through that type of stuff. We’ve been through a lot of tough games, a lot of close games.

We’ve learned so much that we can go into hostile arenas and environments and pull out a win.”

Ohio State was within two points

three times in the final minute of the game but weren’t able to overcome the Wildcats’ lead after being forced to start fouling.

The Buckeyes cut the lead to two points on a Micah Potter 3-pointer with 24 seconds left. But C.J. Jackson had to foul Vic Law, who sank both foul shots to make it 72-68. Marc Loving got it back to two with a layup with 10 seconds on the clock, but a pair of foul shots by Lindsey put Northwestern ahead by four. Potter got the final points for Ohio State with a dunk with one second left.

Law scored 10 points and Sanjay Lumpkin grabbed 11 rebounds as Northwestern won despite shooting just 37.5 percent. Ohio State committed 13 turnovers leading to 17 Northwestern points.

“It’s no secret, this has kind of been a house of horrors for us for a long time, especially since I’ve been here,” Northwestern coach Chris Collins said. “We haven’t had a lot of success in this building. Our guys were really

determined today to try to come out and make the plays necessary to get a win.”

Jae’Sean Tate led Ohio State (12-8, 2-5) with 14 points, JaQuan Lyle added 13 and Trevor Thompson had 11 points and 15 rebounds. The Buckeyes shot 52.2 percent and outrebounded the Wildcats 40-39.

“It just leaves a bitter taste,” Thompson said of the errors and inconsistent effort Sunday after Ohio State had won two straight. “I would hope it leaves a bitter taste in all our mouths because how we’ve been playing coming up to this, then to play how we played and come out like we came out today is just mind-boggling.”

Northwestern took a 36-31 lead at the half after Ohio State had led by as many as six. A Lindsey layup tied it at 23 with 6:46 remaining, and Northwestern went on a 13-8 run from there to take the five-point lead.

Ohio State climbed back and took a 55-52 lead on a 3-pointer from Jackson with 8:41 left but couldn’t maintain it.

Swafford wins CareerBuilder for 1st PGA Tour title

LA QUINTA, Calif. – Hudson Swafford won the fittingly named CareerBuilder Challenge on Sunday for his first PGA Tour title, following three straight birdies with a closing par for a one-stroke victory.

Swafford shot a 5-under 67 on the Stadium Course at PGA West to finish the pro-am event at 20-under 268.

The 29-year-old former Georgia player earned $1,044,000 and his first spot in the Masters.

“They don’t give them away out here. It’s not easy,” Swafford said. “I’ve been close. I’ve been in the heat lately.

Just keep putting myself in position, and this just feels unbelievable.”

Adam Hadwin came back with a 70 after his third-round 59 to finish second.

“I can’t help but be slightly disappointed,” Hadwin said. “I really wanted to come out here and kind of prove that yesterday was just kind of a continuation of some good play and kind of get it done today, but I got beat. I felt like I did all the right things. Just a couple shots here and there and who knows what could have happened. But an incredible

week, my best finish ever.”

Brian Harman and Bud Cauley each shot 69 to tie for third at 18 under.

Swafford tied Cauley for the lead with a 12-foot birdie putt on the par-4 15th, then pulled away on the 16th and 17th – a day after he dropped three strokes on the holes.

“Stepped up there and hit some really good shots on those two holes, knowing what happened yesterday,” Swafford said. “I was just really confident on those two holes today. I knew the bad stuff on those holes were gone. I had already seen it, it had already happened, and just visualizing really good shots.”

On the par-5 16th, he hit a 4-iron 230 yards to 12 feet – staying out of the 18foot deep bunker that he hit into Saturday en route to a double bogey – and two-putted to take the outright lead.

“Just trying to maybe chase it up on the front edge, and it was probably my best swing of the day,” Swafford said.

“It was just right out of the middle, flew on the green. I thought it was actually even going to get closer than it did. But after what happened yesterday, I was really satisfied with that.”

He hit to 11⁄2 feet on the par-3 17th, with the rock-lined island green called

Alcatraz.

“It was just choke up and swing an 8-iron and it ended up being perfect,” Swafford said Hadwin birdied the 16th and made a 25-footer on 17 to stay within a stroke.

Swafford found the fairway on the par-4 18th with water along the left side, then avoided the water again with an approach to the right side of the green.

He lagged his 20-footer to 2 inches for the victory.

Hadwin’s drive on 18 settled in the dormant grass an inch from the green rough and his approach stayed right and settled into thick dormant rough.

The Canadian saved par to finish second alone.

“I would have loved to have put a little bit more pressure on Hud coming up the 18th,” Hadwin said, “but just to be able to get up-and-down from the lie that I had from over there was pretty impressive.”

Five strokes behind leader Chad Campbell after five holes, Swafford birdied Nos. 7-9 to join Campbell and Hadwin atop the leaderboard. On the par-5 eighth, Swafford cut a 5-wood into the middle of the green and lipped out for eagle.

Hawks beat Canucks on late goal

CHICAGO – Jonathan Toews scored the tiebreaking goal with 1:18 remaining and the Blackhawks beat the Vancouver Canucks, 4-2, on Sunday night for their third straight victory.

Toews, who also had three assists, connected from the left circle after Richard Panik’s shot from right wing went wide and caromed off the back boards. Toews fired before Canucks goalie Ryan Miller could move across the crease.

Panik had a goal and an assist and Patrick Kane also scored for the Hawks, who have won seven of their last nine.

Marian Hossa added an empty-netter with 24 seconds left for his 18th goal and 400th point with the Hawks.

Corey Crawford made 26 saves to earn his 200th win.

Troy Stecher and Bo Horvat scored 46 second apart early in the third period to tie it for Vancouver.

Miller stopped 31 shots as the Canucks lost in regulation for just the sec-

ond time in their last 13.

Panik and Kane scored 3:03 apart late in the first to stake the Hawks to a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes. The Hawks dominated the frame, outshooting Vancouver, 18-9.

Set up by Campbell, Panik ripped a one-timer from the slot that clinked off the crossbar and past Miller for his 11th with 5:33 left in the first.

Kane got his 15th with 2:30 to go after Vancouver’s Luca Sbisa lost the puck in the right corner. Kane’s shot from the circle hit the stick blade of the Canucks’ Henrik Sedin and deflected over Miller’s shoulder.

Crawford had to be sharp at times, including stopping Daniel Sedin on a breakaway 7:41 in.

The Hawks’ goalie was tested several times in the scoreless second to keep Vancouver off the board. He stopped Brandon Sutter from the edge of the crease midway through the period during a Canucks power play and Sven Baertschi on a point-blank rebound attempt during another Vancouver man-advantage with 2:30 left in the frame.

Current, former major leaguers die in Dominican crashes

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic – Kansas City Royals pitcher Yordano Ventura and former major leaguer Andy Marte died in separate traffic accidents early Sunday in their native Dominican Republic.

Highway patrol spokesman Jacobo Ma- Yordano teo said Ventura died on Ventura a highway leading to the town of Juan Adrian, about 40 miles (70 kilometers) northwest of Santo Domingo. He said it was not clear if Ventura was driving. Metropolitan traffic authorities said they had opened an investigation into the crash, as well as that of Marte, who died when the Mercedes Benz he was driving hit a house along a road between San Francisco de Macoris and Pimentel, about 95 miles (150 kilometers) north of the capital.

Traffic authority spokesman Diego Pesqueira told The Associated Press there were no rains registered at the time of Ventura’s accident but that it is often foggy in the early morning. He added that the vehicle’s tires were in good

condition and experts think the cause of the accident was an excess of velocity.

The official results of the investigation will be released in the coming days.

The country, whose roads are among the world’s most dangerous, has now lost four current or former major leaguers to traffic accidents in recent years.

Ventura, 25, burst onto the baseball scene with a 100 mph fastball and an explosive attitude to match. He was a fierce competitor always willing to challenge hitters inside, then deal with the ramifications when they decided to charge the mound.

He went 14-10 with a 3.20 ERA in 2014, his first full season in the big leagues, and the next year he helped the long-downtrodden Royals reach the World Series for the first time since 1985. He proceeded to dominate San Francisco in both of his starts, though the Royals would ultimately lose in seven games.

CRP level determines statin use Dear Doctor: A news report recently said statins are underused. I’m 50 with normal cholesterol. Should I take one just in case?

Dear Reader: Statins, which are a type of cholesterol-lowering medication, consistently have shown benefit in reducing the risk of heart attacks and strokes in people who have had a previous heart attack or angina. This benefit is called secondary prevention. Statins also have shown benefit in people with risk factors for heart disease who have never had a heart attack; smokers; and people with diabetes, hypertension or a family history of heart disease. This is called primary prevention.

In people such as yourself, the potential benefit of statin use is not as clear-cut. So, first, let’s look at the Jupiter study, published in 2008. The 17,802 people in this study had normal cholesterol levels – that is, an LDL score (for low-density lipoprotein, the so-called “bad cholesterol”) of less than 130 – but they had an elevated level of highly sensitive C-reactive protein (CRP), a marker for both inflammation and a heightened risk of coronary artery disease.

Researchers divided participants into two groups, with one group taking a daily placebo and the other group taking a daily 20-milligram dose of rosuvastatin. The study was stopped in less than two years because of the significant benefit seen in the group that took the statin.

The study authors found a 44 percent decrease in deaths from heart attacks and strokes and a 20 percent decrease in the total death rate among the group who took the statin. Not only did participants who took rosuvastatin show a reduction in cholesterol, they also showed a decrease in their levels of highly sensitive CRP. That suggests statins reduce both cholesterol and the inflammation that may lead to vascular disease.

Now let’s look at what to consider wheth-

ASK THE DOCTORS Robert Ashley er your CRP level is normal and you have normal cholesterol. A 2001 study in the New England Journal of Medicine followed 6,605 men and women in Texas who had either normal CRP levels or abnormal CRP levels.

One group was given a statin, called lovastatin, and the other group was given a placebo.

Although there was a benefit seen with lovastatin among those who had an elevated CRP level, the benefit was not seen in those who had a normal CRP level.

One conclusion from the data is if you have normal cholesterol and no other risk factors, you should have your doctor check your levels of highly sensitive CRP. If the CRP persistently is elevated, then there is likely benefit to a cholesterol-lowering medication. One word of caution, however: If you have inflammation related to either infection or an autoimmune condition, the CRP will be elevated because of those conditions and therefore won’t be a reliable marker.

Doctors currently assess the need for statins by looking at risk calculators. These risk calculators assess an individual’s risk of having a heart attack over the next 10 years.

However, the science behind the risk calculator is poor, with a large Kaiser Permanente study of 307,000 people showing that it may significantly overestimate risk.

That finding emphasizes the need for the CRP test. If that test is normal, a statin would be unlikely to provide any benefit to you.

Dear Abby: I DEAR ABBY have had a best friend for more Jeanne than 20 years.

Phillips We met when we were 18 and have been inseparable ever since. I was best man in his wedding, and when his first child was born, I traveled six hours to be at the hospital when “Sara” was born. I have never missed a birthday or Christmas.

When my friend announced they were moving from Ohio to Arizona, I knew I couldn’t be away from him and his family, so I moved as well. I have no family of my own, and I adore his two girls. Well, Sara turned 13 this year and, like most teenagers, she’s distancing herself from her family and even more so from me.

When her mom and dad invite me for dinner or a family get-together, she barely acknowledges me when I say hi or ask how she’s doing.

She wants nothing to do with me. It breaks my heart. I love her, and I consider her to be family.

My question is, should I continue to go and support her with her sporting events at school?

(I have never missed a game.) Do I continue to shower her with birthday and Christmas gifts?

On one hand, I tell myself this is just a phase she is going through and to change nothing, hoping one day she realizes I’m her biggest cheerleader and recognizes the love I have for her. On the other hand, I think she’s acting like a spoiled brat, and if she doesn’t know how to treat people, then I want nothing to do with her. How should I handle this? – Un-Uncle In

They see two ways to get the tricks needed for their contract -- let’s call them line A and line B. Sometimes declarer must choose between them; on other deals, it will be possible to succeed if either A or B works -which is obviously preferable.

In today’s deal, South is in three no-trump. West leads the club ace: two, 10, nine. West continues with the club four (in case his partner has only queen-third of clubs). East wins with the queen, returns the club three, wins the fourth trick with his club eight and shifts to a low spade.

How should South try to benefit from the 4-4 club split?

South starts with eight top tricks: one spade, three hearts and four diamonds. The obvious chances for a ninth trick are the spade finesse working -- line A, let’s say -- or the missing hearts splitting 3-3 -- line B. Which would a mathematician recommend?

A finesse is theoretically a 50-50 shot, but a 3-3 break happens only approximately one time in three. So, the finesse is the better percentage.

This means that South, after discarding the spade four at trick three, should pitch the heart five at trick four and bank everything on the spade finesse, which, of course, works!

Village of Homer Glen Public Parkway Tree Planting 2017 Spring and Fall Program This project consists of the purchase and planting of approximately 200 trees in the Village public parkways in the spring and fall of 2017, approximately 100 trees in each season.

Trees are to be 2.5 inches in caliper and include a 36 inch diameter mulch ring with a three (3) inch layer of compost wood chip mulch.

The planting of the trees for the spring program must be completed

by April 28, 2017, and the planting for the fall 2017 program must be completed by November 10, 2017.

Proposals will be opened and publicly read aloud at 2:00 P.M. on February 7, 2017. No bid shall be withdrawn after the opening of the proposals without the consent of the Village Manager.

All proposals shall be sealed in an envelope, addressed to the Deputy Village Clerk Village of Homer Glen. The name and address of the bidder and the name of the project shall appear on the outside of the envelope. Proposals must be submitted on the forms provided by the Village.

The Bid Documents, including specifications, are available at the Village of Homer Glen, 14240 W. 151st Street, Homer Glen, IL and on the Village website www.homerglenil.org.

A bid bond, or a certified check/bank draft drawn on a solvent bank, payable without condition to the Village of Homer Glen in an amount not less than five percent (5%) of the bid shall be submitted with each proposal, as a guaranty that, if the proposal is accepted, a contract will be entered into and the performance of the contract is properly secured.

A performance bond in a sum equal to one hundred percent (100%) of the amount of the bid, with sureties to be approved by the Village for the faithful performance of the contract, must be furnished by the successful bidder upon award of the contract.
