Blue Ribbon project underway

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Blue Ribbon Products has begun construction of its future beer distribution building.

The company, which has been in Joliet since the 1930s, is building a larger distributorship in the Rock Run Business Park. Blue Ribbon is targeting a move to the new facility for late summer.

Company President Don Londergon said the larger facility will make it possible for Blue Ribbon to grow its business.

Blue Ribbon looked at a number of locations, but received tax incentives from the city of Joliet, Joliet Township High School District 204 and Troy School District 30-C to build in the Rock Run Business Park.

All three taxing districts provided a five-year, 50 percent abatement on property taxes. Joliet also provided relief on building permit fees and city impact fees.

The company now operates on West McDonough Street.

Romeoville Area Historical Society to buy home on Belmont Drive for new museum

mmallory@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – The Romeoville Area Historical Society has found a new home.

The group received approval from the Village Board to convert an existing single-family residence at 14 Belmont Drive into its new museum and office. The historical society is under contract to buy the vacant property, a 1,178-squarefoot ranch home owned by the United Presbyterian Church. It was used in the past as a residence for church staff and storage.

Historical society Treasurer Bruce Leinen said the museum is moving out of its current home at 10 Montrose Drive, across from Murphy Park and adjacent to Romeoville Fire Station No. 1, because the building is being bought out by another tenant.

Blue Ribbon’s name reflects the company’s origin as a distributor of Pabst Blue Ribbon beer, which it still handles.

But the company also distributes a large variety of domestic, imported and craft beers, along with wines and spirits.

The museum’s new home will allow for some room to grow, Leinen said.

It will be named the James P. Sczepaniak Museum after the longtime area teacher who left in his will a substantial donation to the Romeoville Area Historical Society.

word about anyone.”

The museum features old clothing dating back to the 1920s, land records through the 1800s and pictures of early settlers of the Romeoville area. One exhibit that always draws attention, Leinen said, is a map of the Hampton Park area that shows all the original owners of the homes in that neighborhood.

The historical society is a nonprofit that uses private donations to cover costs, which are expected to go up now that the society has a standalone building. The land purchase and remodeling job combined will cost close to $250,000, Leinen said.

But the group thinks it’s a better location.

“We were looking for a place with more visibility,” he said.

Romeoville Mayor John Noak said in a village news release the historical society is a great asset to Romeoville. The village anticipates the new exhibit space will encourage generations of residents to learn more about Romeoville and the surrounding area.

Volunteers rid marsh of invasive species during day of service

mmallory@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Jackets and boots were wet, rain was falling and temperatures were in the 30s Monday morning.

The ground was just frozen enough to keep mud puddles from forming under the heavy foot traffic of volunteers walking through the brush.

But a fire was burning at Theodore Marsh in Crest Hill, where the Forest Preserve District of Will County was leading a volunteer effort to clear the preserve of buckthorn, an invasive species of shrubs that can take over a prairie if not stopped in time.

The event was the latest in the district’s volunteer workday series, held Monday in light of the holiday as part of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service.

The local day of service is one of many held around the country that

honor the civil-rights leader Jan. 16 by organizing volunteer efforts to help organizations in local communities.

“We tend to get better turnout on holidays,” said Keith Listermann, a volunteer with the district for two years. “This is about a medium turnout.”

It still was a nice-sized group, considering the weather. The age range of volunteers was from 16 to 83. Some, such as Listermann, volunteer because it’s an opportunity to give back to their communities while enjoying nature.

Others do it as mandated community service for school or Scout programs.

There were students from Providence Catholic High School working in the marsh Monday, said Jason Buss, a natural resource management crew leader and volunteer liaison for the district.

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Joliet City Council on Tuesday will consider hiring a project manager for the Houbolt Road interchange, one of the first steps on the road to construction, but one that could cost the city nearly $400,000.

The interchange at Interstate 80 is part of the future Houbolt Road bridge project, estimated to cost between $171 million and $191 million.

Hiring a project manager kicks off the planning phase for the interchange, City Manager Jim Hock said.

But construction may not start this year, as Gov. Bruce Rauner suggested when he appeared in Joliet in the summer to announce the project.

Hock said construction bids could go out in early 2018. But awarding construction contracts can’t happen until CenterPoint Properties begins building the bridge.

CenterPoint does not yet have a start date for bridge construction, a spokeswoman for the company said Monday.

Hock said he wants to hire an outside project manager rather than assigning someone from the city’s engineering staff, whose time would be completely spent on the interchange.

The city has money set aside in its budget for hiring an outside contractor for the job, he said.

The costs of the project are being paid almost entirely by CenterPoint, the private developer, which would build a toll bridge over the Des Plaines River, and the state, which is covering the estimated $21 million cost of the interchange and Houbolt Road improvements.

But the city has the responsibility of managing the interchange and road improvements, Hock said. “[Illinois Department of Transportation] will not let any city use motor fuel tax funds for this purpose,” Hock said. “Either you pay for it yourself, or you do it yourself internally.”

The city already has a civil engineer devoted full time to managing the new downtown public transit center, a project primarily funded by the state.

Joliet officials said the city’s engineering staff is not deep enough to devote another engineer full time to a single

project.

“We can’t afford to lose another person for a couple of years,” Public Works Director James Trizna said.

City staff are recommending that T.Y. Lin International be hired for the interchange project in an agreement that caps total costs at just under $398,000.

T.Y. Lin also is working on the transit center project, but is being paid by the state for construction management services.

Construction timetables

The Houbolt Road project involves

both building a divergent diamond interchange to replace the one there now and widening the road between the bridge and I-80. Hock said it is likely to take some time to acquire the land needed for widening Houbolt Road.

“There’s plenty of room at the interstate for the divergent diamond,” Hock said. “It’s between there and the bridge that they’ll need more land.”

Hock said the project could be ready to bid out for construction in early 2018. But he noted that the project agreement does not allow construction contracts to be awarded on the interchange and road improvements until CenterPoint has begun construction on the bridge, which would connect the company’s Joliet intermodal center with Houbolt Road.

CenterPoint spokeswoman Noreen Gallery said the company does not have a construction timetable yet.

“They’re still working on the finance, design and construction,” Gallery said.

The project was announced in Joliet in July by Rauner, who said construction would likely start in 2017 with the bridge opening in late 2018 or early 2019.

CenterPoint officials, however, immediately said the announcement was premature and that they were still studying the feasibility of the project.

Since then, CenterPoint has signed on to a multi-party agreement that includes the state, Joliet and Will County, outlining responsibilities and other details of the project.

The project is designed to help relieve truck congestion on local roads by giving semitrailers direct access to I-80 as they come and go from the CenterPoint Intermodal Center.

Joliet history museum to delve into history of jockstraps

Billed as a “scholarly talk on a ‘jocular’ subject,’ ” public speaker Ellie Carlson, who is also a museum and costume curator, will give an examination of masculine protective equipment that was first designed for bicycle jockeys and has evolved over time to be protective, concealing and healthful.

“The purpose is to introduce the audience to the protective equipment that has been utilized by gentlemen …

to preserve the family jewels so they are not compromised in athletic pursuits,” Carlson said.

Her talk, called “Cup Check, Please!” will take place 2 p.m. Sunday at the Joliet Area Historical Museum, 204 N. Ottawa St. The cost is $5 for museum members and $7 for nonmembers.

Carlson has lectured on other topics, such as ladies’ underclothes – that talk is called “Speaking of Unmentionables: The Rise and Fall of Ladies Underwear” – as well as aprons and the history of Valentine’s Day. She also does costumed interpretations and has researched cooking techniques, period ingredients and recipes

While jockstraps may be an unusual subject, Carlson said they have a regional connection. The jockstrap was invented in Chicago in 1874.

“It has a Chicago connection and I decided this was the perfect opportunity

to expand my repertoire,” she said.

Her interest in the subject came about through managing a vintage baseball team called the Chicago Salmon, which plays by the rules of 1858 baseball. She noticed there wasn’t masculine protective equipment used in the time period.

Carlson said Sunday’s talk will be a clean, family event. She stressed there will be no modeling of jockstraps by anyone during the presentation.

Coaches are invited to come, as they’ll learn useful information.

“Knowing the background of anything is always important. Knowledge is power,” she said.

Metal Monkey Brewing celebrates anniversary The HERALD–NEWS ROMEOVILLE – Only six weeks after its first bottled beer was released, Metal Monkey Brewing will release its second bottle at a one-year anniversary party Jan. 28 in Romeoville, according to a village of Romeoville news release.

Metal Monkey opened last January at 515 Anderson Drive.

“Our first year has been fantastic, a lot of hard work, but all the great feedback makes it worthwhile,” owner Brandi Camp said in the news release.

The anniversary festivities will begin at noon and run through 11 p.m at Metal Monkey’s Romeoville location.

The second bottled beer to be released is Simian Pandemic, Metal Monkey’s imperial hibiscus wheat beer, aged in red wine barrels. Very limited quantities will be available – only 300 compared with 1,000 of the first bottled beer, Asmodeus.

Special beer tappings throughout the anniversary party will include Simian Pandemic; bourbon barrel-aged Barleywine; and bourbon barrel-aged Asmodeus.

said Dave Bricker, the district’s fire prevention division chief.

When firefighters got to the home, they found the fire was mostly contained to the utility room, although a little bit got to the attic. The room had

a washer, dryer and furnace, Bricker said. He gave a rough estimate of about $30,000 in damage by the fire.

Bricker said Monday evening that the fire still was under investigation, as the cause had yet to be determined.

Menswear designer visits hometown

Shaw Media correspondent MORRIS – Clothing from the line of national menswear designer James Comfort, who was born and raised in Morris, is now hanging on the racks of the local downtown store Rugged.

Comfort has lived in Philadelphia for several years, but he came home to visit his friends and family during the holidays. He also made the opportunity to stop by the store and see his shirts for sale in his hometown.

“It’s really exciting,” he said of seeing his line in town. “I’m really happy that Rugged gave me a chance and that people are giving me a chance.”

Comfort has been in the clothing business for a while, but having his own line is a new adventure.

Growing up, Comfort had no interest in clothing or sewing. A 2004 Morris Community High School graduate, he said his interests lay more in sports.

He was on the tennis, soccer and swim teams and spent spare time doing woodworking and playing video games.

“I was probably pretty shabbily dressed in high school,” he said with a laugh. “I was one of four boys. ... I got hand-me-downs from my older brothers.”

As a high school student, Comfort was an exchange student in Mexico for a year through the tutelage of his Spanish teacher, Sue Womack, and found he loved the culture and language. After graduating, he attended Clemson University in South Carolina and received his degree in Spanish and international trade.

While in college, Comfort came across a shirt that he loved. He said it fit him perfectly, which, at a height of 6-foot-5, didn’t come easily.

“A local person designed it,” he said. “I became their first employee in their start-up shirt company. ... It left an impression. ... After several years, I thought I would try it myself.”

Working there, he became fascinated with the whole industry.

“It’s a difficult industry to get into,” he said, “but you can create anything in your imagination and also fulfill a need.”

Comfort said his last name is a good one for the industry. Everyone has encountered items of clothing that are uncomfortable or just don’t feel right on them, he said.

One of the most difficult parts of designing a clothing line is getting the sizing just right, he explained.

“All the retailers have their own sizing,” he said.

While working a full-time job during the day as a consultant at a telecommunications company – he still works that job – he spent many late nights coming up with his brand, trying to source it in the United States, finding the perfect materials and doing everything else that comes with designing clothing.

He does have one surprising little bug when it comes to designing.

“I have some slight color blindness,” he said.

Comfort doesn’t let that stand in his way, though. His girlfriend is happy to help him when he has a bit of trouble discerning a gray from a subtle green.

He stuck with shirts to begin his line. Today, the “James Comfort” line has long-sleeved, plaid button-up shirts; long-sleeved polos; and short-sleeved polos, all in various colors.

“I really looked for fabrics that would be really comfortable and easy to wear,” he said. “I built the cut so tall and lean people will have something to wear. It’s very difficult for me to go into a store and find something that fits me.”

The shirts, though, he said, are not just for tall men. They work well for a range of shapes. They’re good quality, too, he said. His website describes the line as, “classy comfort” with “high-end fabrics.”

in Morris. They also are the line’s best sellers. One is more of a rugged look, and the others are of a finer fabric that are great for daytime or going out at night.

The line’s logo was inspired by the rhinoceros, and a portion of every purchase goes to efforts to support the endangered animal.

Molly Hoffman, owner of Rugged, said she’s happy to have Comfort’s line in her store.

“A lot of people come in looking for them,” she said. “They have been flying out of here. ... I think it is really neat to have some of the line of someone who grew up in Morris.”

Hoffman said the fit of the shirts is amazing, the quality is good and they wash well.

preserve district,” Buss said of Theodore Marsh. “And it’s centrally located.

Universities and high schools aren’t far away.”

Volunteers worked from 8 a.m. to noon with a short break at 10 a.m. Efty Kelly, a volunteer of at least 15 years with the district, said sometimes the teens who volunteer gather around and talk.

Other times, they’re eager to work.

Monday they were hauling branches and logs of buckthorn to the controlled burn pile.

By now, Kelly is known by Buss on a first-name basis.

“My sister and her husband got me into volunteering for the district,” Kelly said.

Listermann said volunteering offers an opportunity to do something outside, away from his indoor regular job. He said larger crowds of 50 to 60 volunteers

can knock out a couple of acres of invasive species in one day. He was volunteering Sunday, too, and got a scratch on his nose from a branch to prove it.

“I didn’t even know,” Listermann said. “I got home and my wife asked me why I had blood on my face.”

Buss explained that the marsh on the east side of Gaylord Road was once a construction dump site and is now home to a diverse group of snakes that hibernate there. On the west side of Gaylord Road is where Monday’s operation was taking place, however.

“Volunteers helping us today are preserving, protecting and maintaining a native habitat,” Buss said. “In the big picture, buckthorn would mean minimal diversity. Yeah, there would be deer and some birds, but with the buckthorn scraped back and native seeds taking root, we’ll start to see songbirds, coyotes and foxes.”

Buss said buckthorn came over from Europe and many farmers used it to plant hedges on their land to keep cattle inside certain plots.

OBITUARIES JAMES E. ALLEGRETTI

Born: February 18, 1928; in Oak Park, IL Died: January 15, 2017; in Joliet, IL James E. Allegretti, age 88, of Joliet, and formerly of Villa Park, Elmhurst, and Oak Park, passed away peacefully, Sunday, January 15, 2017, at Joliet Area Community Hospice Home with his family by his side.

Born February 18, 1928 in Oak Park, he was the son of Aldo and Mary (Sullivan) Allegretti.

He worked for Park Farms Cheese, Elmhurst, and later for General Mills, West Chicago, retiring in 1992.

Jim was an avid bowler and wood worker, and enjoyed playing pinochle and computer solitaire. He also enjoyed watching sports.

He supported his grandchildren by attending many choir and band concerts and dance recitals.

He was a member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, and a former member of St. Alexander Catholic Church and its Holy Name Society. He was also a member of the General Mills 25 Year club.

Surviving are his beloved wife of 61 years, Josephine “Dolly” (Guardalabene) Allegretti; one daughter, Theresa (Frank) Reis; three sons, Gregory (Kathryn) Allegretti, Mark (Carol) Allegretti, and David (Susan) Allegretti; five grandchildren, Simone and Angela Reis and Joseph, Erin and Megan Allegretti; two brothers, Thomas (Ethel) Allegretti and Dan (Shirley) Allegretti; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded by his parents; brothers, Aldo, Francis and John Allegretti; and sisters, Mary Marseille and Margaret Johnsen.

He was employed at EJ & E Railroad as a signal supervisor and Metra Railroad. Jerome was a dedicated White Sox fan and groundskeeper for Ingalls Park Youth Baseball for many years. He especially enjoyed rooting for his grandchildren on the ballfield. Jerome was a lifetime member of VFW Cantigny Post #367.

He was a faithful attendee at the monthly EJ & E retirement luncheons. He was a grateful member of Alcoholics Anonymous being sober for 57 years. More than anything Jerome was a devoted family man. His wife, children, and grandchildren were his life.

June was a member of the Silver Cross Hospital Advisory Board since 1964. Over the past 40 years, June volunteered over 10,000 hours at the Silver Cross Encore Shop where she was known as the Jewelry Queen. An avid knitter, June found joy in creating gifts for others, including knitting over 450 handmade hats for hair loss patients at Silver Cross.

June loved traveling, fishing, following local sports teams, and gathering over a meal with friends and family. She will be remembered for her kindness, warmth, wit and wisdom.

June was always perfectly and beautifully adorned and coordinated from head to toe.

Bienville Jones Jr. was born on June 28, 1955 in Joliet, IL. He was one of eight children born to the union of Bienville Jones Sr. and Ellis Jones.

He suddenly passed away into eternity on Wednesday, January 11, 2017.

Bienville was a member of Emanuel Bible Center United Church of God in Christ where he served until his health declined. He was loved by all who knew him from near and far and could talk to anyone about anything.

Bienville is preceded in death by his parents, Bienville and Ellis Jones; his brother, William Henry Jones; his maternal grandparents, Henry and Charliestein Reed; his paternal grandparents, William Jones and Binetta Ashford; uncle, Henry Reed, Jr.; and aunt, Paula Gaddy.

Diane L. Hartman (nee Carey) (Villegas), age 62, lost her life due to a battle with lupus on Saturday, January 14, 2017.

Diane was born on April 6, 1954. Attended SS. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Grade School, Joliet Central High School. Later, she went to JJC, St. Francis University, and Lewis University. Diane retired from Joliet Central High School after a long teaching career.

Preceded in death by her beautiful daughter, Julie Villegas; her wonderful mother, Bernice Carey (nee Shroba) and her father, Raymond Carey; and her amazing brother, James G. Carey.

ANTON KALUZA Anton “Tony” Kaluza, age 82, peacefully entered into eternal life on Friday, January 13, 2017.

Tony was born in Slovenia and immigrated to the U.S. in 1956 and found true love with Julia and married her on October 10, 1959.

Tony retired from Caterpillar after 36 years as a machinist and enjoyed singing and dancing with his sweetheart and anyone else he could pull on the dance floor. His greatest loves were his faith, country, heritage, wife, children, and grandchildren. Tony faithfully served St. Joseph Church in Joliet and the Slovenian Catholic Mission in Lemont as a parishioner and choir member for over 50 years. He was a member and former president of the St. Joseph Holy Name Society organizing many trips to Comiskey Park, a member of the elite group of singers, Slovenska Pesem, Polka Masssters, and helped build the Slovenian Catholic Center. As a member and former president of St. Francis de Sales KSKJ #29 and Slovenian Catholic League, and Slovenian Catholic Center, Tony volunteered countless hours and worked wherever he was needed.

Tony loved to sing and was often welcomed to take center stage to sing his favorite polkas and waltzes. He loved his racing buddies at the Indy 500 and Chicagoland Speedway. Tony happily enjoyed “checking the coolers regularly” and visiting with his friends at Bobby’s Tap. Tony loved being with family and friends, playing bocce ball, bowling, softball, and sharing a good story or laugh.

He will be lovingly missed by all and celebrated for eternity.

He was born in Joliet and was a lifelong

Member of the Will County and State Bar Associations; formerly was the Attorney for Ludwig, Kelvin Grove, Fairmont, Chaney-Monge school districts, the Lockport Fire District, the Fire District Foundation and the Channahon Park District and is presently the attorney for the Lockport Park District.

Steve started his career at Legal Aid in Chicago; was active in politics, served as Democratic committeeman and Joliet Township supervisor, served on the Will County Board for 10 years, first from Joliet, then from Lockport, losing by 1 vote in the battle for Chairman of the Will County Board in the 101 ballot vote; he ran for Will County Recorder of Deeds and Judge of the Circuit Court; was member and past president of both the Lockport Rotary Club and Lockport Chamber of Commerce, served 25 years on the Lockport Old Canal Days Committee and served on the boards of the Will County Historical Society, American Cancer Society and the United Way. Member of the Lockport Moose Lodge #1557, Lockport American Legion John Olson Post #18; past president of SS Cyril and Methodius Parish and Holy Name Society; a current member of St. Dennis Church, Lockport; was chairman for the 25th Anniversary of the Diocese of Joliet and was on the diocese First Diocesan Council.

Steve graduated from SS Cyril and Methodius Grade School, Joliet Catholic High School, Valedictorian Class of 1955, Loyola University in Chicago, majoring in Political Science and Loyola University Law School, where he was a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity.

He was an avid golfer and poker player, but his greatest joy was attending his grandchildren’s activities. He was a United States Army Reserve veteran.

Preceded in death by his parents, Steve and Anna (Matuszewski) Luzbetak; his first wife, Jacqlyn (Rushing) Luzbetak; sister-in-law, Carol Rushing; brother-in-law, Terry (Sara) Aversa and a special uncle, Michael Matuszewski.

Survived by his wife of 47 years, Ann “Betty” (Banas) Luzbetak; his children, Judy (Dave) Ward, Mark (Kim Ross) Luzbetak and Paul Luzbetak; five grandchildren, Andy, Jake, Emma, Anna and Sadie; a sister, Loretta (Pete) Murphy; brother-in-law George (Barbara) Banas; and a special aunt, Rita Matuszewski. CHICAGO – The release of a damning Department of Justice report, which found civil-rights abuses permeate Chicago’s 12,000-officer police force, was in many ways just the start of a process that could take a decade or more.

The proposal follows the water crisis in Flint, Michigan, which shed light on the

hazards of lead contamination and the disproportionate impact on low-income and minority residents. Children are most at risk to the effects of elevated lead levels, which can cause developmental delays.

Lead pipes were banned in the U.S. in 1986.

Off-duty sergeant wounds person after shots fired

CHICAGO– Authorities said an off-duty Chicago police sergeant shot and wounded a person after someone in a vehicle opened fire on the sergeant and his companions on the city’s northwest side.

A: Under Obama, they usually took the plan to a federal judge to make it legally binding in the form of a “consent decree.” The court also appointed a monitor to ensure compliance.

While the LAPD had complied with key provisions by 2009, it was only in 2013 that a federal judge ended all court oversight.

Police said the sergeant was walking with acquaintances Sunday night in the Albany Park neighborhood when a group of people in a vehicle instigated a verbal confrontation. Police said someone in the vehicle fired shots, prompting the sergeant to draw his gun and return fire.

The vehicle sped away. Police said a person in the vehicle, identified as a male, was shot in the head and taken to a hospital. Investigators recovered a weapon.

Neither the sergeant nor his companions were wounded.

Lawrence J. Treadman Jr. “Larry,” age 83, of Wilmington, passed away peacefully Saturday, January 14, 2017 at his home.

Born November 28, 1933 in Chicago, Lawrence Joseph was the son of the late Lawrence and Gertrude (Weiss) Treadman. On February 1, 1958 Larry married Beverly Darlene Bollinger at St. Rose

Catholic Church, Wilmington and together they made their home and raised their family in Wilmington.

Larry worked as a bricklayer for 62 years and retired from Local 14 on December 31, 1999. He was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church, Braidwood Recreation Club and Wilmington Moose Lodge #241. Larry enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing, traveling and playing cards.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Beverly; four children, Deborah Treadman, Karen (Jay) Friedenberg of Bolingbrook, Susan(Mitchell) Lyday and Jeff (Carol) Treadman both of Wilmington; five grandchildren, Abigail Friedenberg, Matthew Lyday, Max Lyday, Allison (Josh) Strohm and Jeff C. NEW YORK – Days before taking office, President-elect Donald Trump attempted to navigate the fallout of his flap with a civil-rights leader and colleague of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. while also losing a member of his incoming administration to accusations of plagiarism.

Trump on Monday met with one of King’s sons on the holiday marking the life of the slain American icon just days after the president-elect attacked Rep. John Lewis on Twitter. Lewis and the elder King were among the Big Six leaders of the civil-rights movement of the 1960s.

Trump accused Lewis, D-Ga., for being “all talk” after Lewis questioned the legitimacy of Trump’s election. The president-elect also advised the veteran congressman to pay more attention to his “crime-ridden” Atlanta-area district. Trump’s comments drew widespread criticism and have done little to reassure those uneasy about the transition from the nation’s first black president to a president-elect still struggling to connect with most nonwhite voters.

Martin Luther King III downplayed the slight, saying that “in the heat of emotion a lot of things get said on both sides.” King, who said he pressed Trump on the need for voting reform to increase participation, deemed the meeting “constructive.” King said that while he disagreed with the president-elect’s comments, he believed “at some point in this nation we’ve got to move forward.”

“He said that he is going to represent all Americans. He said that over and over again,” King told reporters in the lobby of Trump Tower after the nearly hourlong meeting. “I believe that’s his intent, but I think we also have to consis-

Trump, who struggled for support from minority voters on Election Day, briefly joined King in the lobby but ignored reporters’ shouted questions about his comments about Lewis.

Lewis had suggested that Trump’s November victory was delegitimized because of Russian interference and said he would boycott Friday’s Inauguration. More than two dozen Democratic members of Congress have said they will sit out the Trump ceremony.

Among them is Tennessee Rep. Steve Cohen, who said Monday that “this president ‘semi-elect’ does not deserve to be president of the United States. He has not exhibited the characteristics or the values that we hold dear.”

The Martin Luther King holiday is meant to honor community service and volunteerism, and many Americans, including President Barack Obama, spend part of the day doing a service project of some kind. Trump, who canceled a planned trip to Washington, spent the day inside the Manhattan skyscraper that bears his name.

media commentator Monica Crowley will not be joining the Trump administration after accusations of plagiarism, a transition official said.

Crowley, a frequent on-air presence at Fox News Channel, had been slated to join Trump’s National Security Council as a director of strategic communications. On Monday, she withdrew her name from consideration after CNN reported last week that several passages in a 2012 book Crowley wrote were plagiarized.

Publisher HarperCollins then pulled the book.

Crowley’s retreat was first reported by The Washington Times. The transition official confirmed the decision on the condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to speak publicly about the matter.

Trump has continued to lash out at his critics in the intelligence community and questioned whether the CIA director himself was “the leaker of fake news” in a Sunday night tweet.

The extraordinary criticism from the incoming president came hours after CIA chief John Brennan charged that Trump lacks a full understanding of the threat Moscow poses to the U.S.

WASHINGTON – The International Monetary Fund on Monday raised its forecast for the U.S. economy over the next two years, saying President-elect Donald Trump’s policies should boost economic growth, particularly in 2018. But officials warned that if Trump’s protectionist trade proposals set off a trade war, that could be “quite destructive” for the global economy.

The IMF also increased 2017 growth projections for a number of other countries, including China, Germany, Japan and Britain, but warned that the global economy faced a number of downside risks from rising protectionism to a jump in interest rates.

The 189-nation global lending agency’s latest economic outlook took note of the significant impact Trump’s election has already had in giving a boost to U.S. stock prices, interest rates and the dollar. The new outlook puts U.S. economic growth at 2.3 percent this year and 2.5 percent in 2018. That would be an improvement from lackluster U.S. growth around 1.6 percent in 2016.

During the campaign, Trump said his economic policies of tax cuts, regulatory reform and boosts in infrastructure spending would lift U.S. growth to annual rates of 4 percent.

The new forecast represents a boost of 0.1 percentage point this year and an increase of 0.4 percentage point for 2018, when Trump’s stimulus plans would be expected to be phased in. That is a half-point higher growth than the IMF was forecasting in October, before Trump’s election.

In contrast, the World Bank last week left its U.S. forecast unchanged at 2.2 percent growth in 2017 and 2.1 percent for 2018, arguing that there was too much uncertainty over the fate of Trump’s proposals to incorporate them in a forecast.

But IMF Chief Economist Maurice Obstfeld told reporters at a briefing Monday that he viewed the IMF’s upgrade for the United States as a moderate increase that took into account the U.S. election results.

“We now have the presidency and the legislative branch in the same hands. It seems very clear to us that some of the promises will be delivered on,” Obstfeld said. “We know the direction of policies. We don’t know the specifics.”

For the overall global economy, the IMF left its projections unchanged growth of 3.4 percent for this year and 3.6 percent for 2018, both up from 3.1 percent growth in 2016, a year when global growth slowed to its weakest performance since the 20082009 financial crisis.

But the IMF saw better prospects in a number of countries including Germany, Japan, Spain and Britain, thanks in part to a rebound in growth in many parts of the world in the second half of last year that provided momentum going into 2017.

“The global economic landscape started to shift in the second half of 2016,” Obstfeld said, helped by a rebound in manufacturing activity in many countries and the financial market rally that started with Trump’s November election victory.

But Obstfeld said there was a wid-

er than usual range of upside and downside risks in part because of the uncertainty over how much of Trump’s program will win congressional approval and what the spillover effects will be for the rest of the world.

While Trump’s election victory boosted economic prospects in the United States, the impact has been uneven for the rest of the world.

Some countries could see stronger growth from the increase in activity in the United States, the world’s largest economy, but some emerging market countries may face challenges as global interest rates rise.

The new outlook boosted the growth forecast for China, the world’s second largest economy, by 0.3 per-

centage point to 6.5 percent this year.

The IMF expects the Chinese government to providing further stimulus to the economy.

The outlook also boosted 2017 growth projections for Germany, Japan, Spain and Britain to reflect stronger-than-expected performances in the second half of last year. At the same time, the IMF lowered its forecasts for Italy, South Korea, India and Brazil, reflecting disappointing performances in the last half of 2016.

The IMF said that growth prospects in Latin America were being hurt by rising uncertainty about the outlook in Mexico, given Trump’s statements overhauling trade relations between the United States and Mexico. About The IMF slashed its growth projections for Mexico by 0.6 percentage point in both 2017 and 2018 to 1.7 percent this year and 2 percent next year.

Obstfeld said that among the risks facing the global economy at the moment were “higher popular antipathy toward trade, immigration and multilateral engagement” among voters in the U.S. and Europe.

Lockport native O’Connor, Plainfield East’s McGee at wrestling summit VIEWS Curt Herron There’s very few occasions when we report on an area high school event where two of the nation’s top athletes are competing.

But that’s what happened last Saturday at Lincoln-Way East’s Illini Classic and the best part was that two of the nation’s best wrestlers happen to be local athletes.

St. Rita’s Austin O’Connor, who lives in Lockport, had been ranked in the top-five nationally this season at his weight class by InterMat. After capturing the title at the Cheesehead Invite, the senior moved up to the No. 1 spot at 145 pounds.

And Plainfield East’s Michael McGee, who’s also a senior, earned a spot among the nation’s best as he was ranked fourth at 120 by that website.

After covering area wrestling for over 20 years and other local sports for 30 years, I haven’t seen very many contests in any competition where two of the best in the country were not only taking part, but also lived in our area.

O’Connor won his fourth-straight Illini Classic, while McGee captured a title there for the third year in a row, and both did so in impressive fashion. They remained unbeaten and now look to end their successful high school careers by capturing another state championship.

As one of only three wrestlers to win a combined eight state titles in both the IKWF and IHSA meets, O’Connor hopes to make history in a number of ways at this year’s state finals, which run from Feb. 16-18 in Champaign. He’s now 34-0 and 169-4 in his career with his last loss coming

“Even though guys are testing me, I want to keep increasing things so that there’s no one who can compete with me in Illinois. I feel like I’ve controlled pretty much all of my matches this year, and I will probably be wrestling a lot of the same guys since we’ve wrestled against tough teams and seen a lot of the ranked kids in Illinois. So I feel good right now.”

“I’m not just trying to beat everybody, but dominate everybody,” McGee said. “I’m working hard every single day and doing the extras, on

Thornton, Akenten provide highlight for Bolingbrook

jwelge@shawmedia.com OSWEGO – By this point, crowd-pleasing plays are nothing new from Nana Akenten and the Bolingbrook boys basketball team.

Led by the 6-foot-6 Nebraska recruit, the Raiders have opened eyes all year. They’re one of a handful of unbeaten teams left in the Chicago area and have emerged as a Class 4A title contender.

Akenten and teammate Kaleb Thornton took the cake Monday.

Falling out of bounds chasing a loose ball on the fast break in the closing seconds of the first half at the MLK Oswego Day of Hoops, Thornton threw a blind pass back over his shoulder.

Akenten was at the business end.

His soaring two-hand slam electrified the stands.

“He heard me calling, I was telling him that I was trailing,” Akenten said.

“That’s just team chemistry. Something told me he was going to throw it up like that.”

It was but one of many high-flying moments for the Raiders, who rolled to a 79-42 win.

Akenten had 12 points and 13 rebounds. Trevor Ross added 12 points, Joseph Yesufu 11 and Malik Binns eight points and nine rebounds for Bolingbrook (14-0).

Binns and Akenten had two dunks each in the first half, Binns throwing down a vicious tip jam in midair in the first quarter.

The Thornton-Akenten connection caught the eye of Bolingbrook coach Rob Brost.

“We’ve seen some really high-level plays like that, but that one might have been the best we’ve had all year,” Brost said. “Kaleb was almost falling out of bounds. The good news is we have several guys who can finish like Nana.”

Monday’s game, on a day off school sandwiched between Friday’s big win

against Homewood-Flossmoor and Tuesday’s matchup with Joliet Central, could have been a prime letdown opportunity.

The Raiders hardly played like it.

Leading 24-17 early in the second quarter, Bolingbrook ripped off a 17-3 run.

Yesufu’s three-point play started it, and Akenten’s tip-jam finished it.

“There’s always a concern when you don’t have school and don’t have a routine,” Brost said. “Our guys handled their business.”

Akenten and Binns led Bolingbrook’s overwhelming 56-19 rebounding edge, Binns grabbing seven offensive rebounds alone. The disparity between the two teams was evident early. Oswego has some size, but not near the raw physicality of the Raiders.

Akenten’s second dunk made it 4522 by halftime, allowing him and the other Bolingbrook starters to sit most of the second half.

“We told each other after that first quarter that we had to pick it up, that we weren’t going nearly as hard as we could,” Akenten said. “We stepped on the gas and didn’t let up.”

Oswego (4-12) graduated nine players from a team that lost to Joliet West in last year’s sectional final. Senior guard Jaylen Jones, one of the few holdovers from a team that starts two sophomores and brings a freshman and sophomore off the bench, led the Panthers with 12 points.

The shootout, a three-game event that featured six teams that regularly played in the now-defunct Joliet Central MLK Day of Hoops, was in its first year. Earlier Monday, Lemont beat Mount Carmel, 72-62, and Plainfield North beat Crete-Monee, 70-55.

“Bolingbrook’s at a different level than we are right now with their size, speed and strength,” Oswego coach Matt Borrowman said. “We knew they would be really good, a team that has a chance to go all the way. When you get a chance to play the best, that’s who you want to play.”

One way to view Minooka’s 41-39 victory over Joliet Central last Friday night is that it helped serve as the beginning of a golden 12-day stretch for boys basketball fans in the Joliet area.

That same night, Bolingbrook knocked off Homewood-Flossmoor, 78-73. The Raiders, you will recall, also had beaten the Vikings, 67-62, for the championship of the Hinsdale Central Christmas Tournament.

The Minooka-Joliet Central series, meanwhile, has gone beyond interesting. The teams have met three times. Minooka won, 39-37, on Adrian Paige’s 3-point buzzer-beater in the title game of the WJOL Thanksgiving Classic. Joliet Central laid a 46-21 beating on the Indians on Dec. 16, and now Minooka has the series lead, 2-1. The next possible meeting would come in the postseason.

With records and other accomplishments to date primary factors, the Steelmen remain No. 3 in this week’s area rankings, while the Indians, coming off a grueling weekend where they left home at 6 a.m. Saturday to play twice Saturday and twice Monday in the Galesburg MLK Tournament, hold steady in the fourth spot.

Of course, the top two teams, Bolingbrook and Joliet West, have some big games on the horizon. The No. 1-ranked and unbeaten Raiders will entertain Joliet Central in a nonconference battle Tuesday night and are only a week away from the showdown at home next Tuesday, Jan. 24, against West.

In between, Bolingbrook will play host Friday night to Lincoln-Way East, which this week is ranked No. 6.

Besides having Bolingbrook looming on the schedule, Joliet West will face Whitney Young, one of the state’s top-ranked teams, at 4 p.m. Saturday in the shootout at Glenbard East.

A majority of the large schools in the Joliet area have been assigned to the Class 4A Lincoln-Way East Sectional. Seeding is scheduled in mid-February, so all of these matchups could have a bearing as teams jockey for seeding position.

“The next month is going to be adventurous,” Joliet Central coach Lawrence Thompson Jr. said after last Friday’s loss to Minooka, which ended the Steelmen’s 11-game winning streak. “I’m proud of our kids, the energy they had, the way they fought through it. Minooka was just

“They’re a very good team, and I’m not taking anything away from them.

But two two-point losses to them is not good. We have to start over and build back everything we did to get to this point. We have to pick ourselves up. There were lots of problems for us that Minooka caused, and we made some of the problems ourselves. We made some extra passes, but sometimes we didn’t make the extra pass we needed to make.”

The Steelmen aim to do everything well in their visit to Bolingbrook.

They know that’s a must in order to compete with the Raiders.

That being said, here is look at how the top 10 teams in the area stack up this week.

1. Bolingbrook (14-0): Imagine have two sophomores the caliber of Joseph Yesufu and Tyler Cochran in your regular rotation.

2. Joliet West (17-1): Observers around the state will be watching Saturday’s game against Young and next Tuesday’s matchup with Bolingbrook.

3. Joliet Central (14-2): One thing is

certain, you know the Steelmen will get after it defensively against an opponent as good as Bolingbrook.

4. Minooka (13-6): The Indians had the big victory over Joliet Central and followed that with a narrow win and a couple of relatively tight losses in the Galesburg MLK Tournament.

Their final game at Galesburg was Monday night against Dunlap.

5. Lockport (9-7): Coming off an impressive 47-26 win over Sandburg, the Porters have a challenging week ahead as they host Bloom, visit Stagg

and entertain West Aurora.

6. Lincoln-Way East (11-7): The Griffins opened their stay at the Rockton Hononegah MLK Tournament with two losses Saturday and had two more games Monday.

7. Joliet Catholic (9-8): The Hilltoppers are hanging in against the better teams on their schedule. They host Bishop McNamara on Tuesday night and Saint Viator on Friday night.

8. Romeoville (9-7): The Spartans whipped Plainfield South and Oswego East last week and may be getting ready to put a run together.

9. Lemont (10-8): The Indians suffered their first loss with point guard P.J. Pipes back from suspension when they fell to Richards, 65-62 in overtime. But they bounced back Monday to beat Mount Carmel, 72-62, at the Oswego MLK Shootout as Pipes scored 27.

10. Morris (7-8): The Redskins hope to escape from their up-and-down season and get a winning streak going.

Obama celebrates World Series champs

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama, with just days left in office, honored the Cubs, the 2016 World Series champions, at the White House on Monday afternoon.

“They said this day would never come,” Obama said as he started his remarks. As he walked into the East Room, the boisterous audience, consisting of the extremely well connected, chanted in the singsong Chicagoans well know, “Let’s Go, Cubbies!”

Obama, relishing the moment, said he has a chance to say “Something none of my predessors ever had a chance to say, ‘Welcome to the White House,’ the World Series champion Cubs.

“I will say that the Cubs took long enough. I’ve only got four days left,” said Obama.

After the event, Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts said, “That was the best sports ceremony ever.”

It’s routine for a championship team to be honored by a president.

What’s unusual is that Obama sped up the timetable so he could salute the champs from his adopted hometown on his watch.

Obama has been a vocal White Sox fan, but was gracious in hosting the Cubs. Cubs president Theo Epstein issued a “midnight pardon” to the president for being a White Sox fan.

“Among Sox fans,” Obama said, “I’m the Cubs’ No. 1 fan.”

Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo, who wears No. 44, presented Obama – the nation’s 44th president – with a No. 44 Cubs jersey with OBAMA on the back. When Cubs Hall of Famer Fergie Jenkins suggested Obama wear the Cubs jersey, the president smiled and politely declined.

In a more serious note, Epstein told the president: “Thank you for the dignity and integrity with which you served our country.”

In the president’s last official event at the White House, the president explained why sports teams get honored by presidents.

“Sports has a way of changing hearts in a way that politics and business doesn’t,” Obama said.

State Rep. Sara Feigenholtz, D-Chicago, said, “My love for the Cubs is not new, and it’s not a secret.

I am just flat out lucky to have Wrigley Field in my district,” she told the Sun-Times.

“I am still floating on air about the Cubs winning the World Series.

My admiration for the president is no secret either; seeing President Obama and the Cubs together – it’s a dream come true. I am just over the moon. Pinch me.”

The Ricketts family, which owns the Cubs, is very political. Parents Joe and Marlene Ricketts are

megadonors to Republican candidates and causes. Their four kids are on the Cubs board: Laura Ricketts is a major Democratic donor and fundraiser, active in Obama’s and Hillary Clinton’s campaigns. Todd Ricketts runs major GOP-allied political funds and is President-elect Donald Trump’s choice to be the deputy commerce secretary. Tom, the board chair, is a conservative, and Pete is the GOP governor of Nebraska.

Laura, Todd and Tom flanked the president during the ceremony.

Four current players who were on the World Series roster did not make the trip: reliever Hector Rondon and starting pitchers Jake Arrieta, Jon Lester and John Lackey. Arrieta said over the weekend he had family health issues to attend to.

Among former players attending were Aroldis Chapman, Dexter Fowler, David Ross and Chris Coghlan. Two former players from the

World Series missed the trip: outfielder Jorge Soler and pitcher Travis Wood.

Epstein, Maddon and Rizzo all described how impressive the moment was when the president and first lady entered the room as the team was gathered and chatting before the public event.

“You could hear a pin drop,” Rizzo said.

“It really was an amazing moment when the entire organization was gathered around waiting for a while, and then the president and first lady bounded into the room with tremendous energy and gave really heartfelt remarks,” Epstein said. “You could tell this visit had a lot of personal meaning to them. The first lady talking about her days on the South Side as a Cub fan bonding with her father over their support of the Cubs. Clearly she was moved by the championship and it was a great moment for all of us.”

He won in his first year, then went through a winless PGA Tour season as a sophomore. In his third season, Spieth rocketed to the top of golf by winning the Masters and U.S. Open, chasing the Grand Slam and winning the FedEx Cup to go with his five victories.

This is the third year for Thomas.

He already has won three times in five starts, as many titles as anyone captured all of last year. And it’s not even February, so maybe more great golf is on the horizon. The first major is still three months away.

Thomas is not lacking confidence, nor humility. He doesn’t take himself seriously, only his golf.

With a seven-shot lead going into the final round, all he heard Saturday night and all of Sunday morning was that no one had ever lost a 54-hole lead that large. It led to jangled nerves when teed off in the final round, and even though no one ever got closer than five shots, he had one nervous moment over an 8-foot par putt on the sixth hole. Miss it and he would be 2 over for his round, his lead down to four.

He made it. After four birdies in his next six holes, the lead was up to eight and Thomas was on his way. The last birdie gave him a 72-hole score of 253, one better than the record Tommy Armour III set in 2003 at the Texas Open.

Thomas spoke confidently after he set the 36-hole record of 123 (59-64) when to measure how he was playing.

“I definitely haven’t shown the world my best golf,” he said.

So after setting scoring records, after posting his 12th consecutive round in the 60s worldwide (his average is 66.1 over his last three events), winning back-to-back in Hawaii and destroying his competition at Waialae, Thomas was asked if he was getting closer to his best.

“Yeah, I’m obviously playing great.

I’m not going to sit here and tell you I’m playing OK,” he said. “I would take the golf I played the last few weeks every week I play.”

HONOLULU – Winning never gets old, even for the young.

That’s why Justin Thomas was mildly annoyed when one of the perks from his victory at the Sony Open vanished before his eyes. Fresh off his sweep of Hawaii, he looked up from his phone and said to his father, “320.”

The number wasn’t at all related to any of the scoring records he set at Waialae Country Club. It was the number of text messages that mysteriously got wiped out before he could even read them. It’s a safe bet they all read the same way.

Thomas, all of 23, is playing some pretty good golf.

“Pretty unbelievable what he’s doing right now,” said Jordan Spieth, who has known Thomas since they were 13.

“He’s got full control of his game, full confidence, and he’s executing under pressure. It’s a lot of fun to see – stuff that myself and a lot of our peers have seen going back almost 10 years now.”

The last two weeks – really, the last three months – everyone else has started to notice.

Thomas won the CIMB Classic in Malaysia for the second straight year.

During his short break from golf, he concentrated on shoring up his accuracy off the tee and his efficiency with the wedge and the putter. He showed up in Hawaii for the new year and swept both PGA Tour events convincingly – a three-shot victory Hideki Matsuyama on Maui, a seven-shot victory over Olympic gold medalist Justin Rose on Oahu.

That led one of two questions. Who is this guy or where was this guy?

More than just a wire-to-wire victory in the Sony Open, Thomas opened the tournament with a 59, only the eighth sub-60 round in PGA Tour history. And he never really let up until he set the 36-hole scoring record, tied the 54-hole scoring record, and tapped in for birdie on his final hole to set the 72-hole scoring record.

In two weeks on two islands, he was 49 under par.

This being the Aloha State, it’s fair to ask if this was hello or goodbye. Was this a two-week stretch in which Thomas stamped himself a veritable rising star? Or was it simply a player riding the kind of wave found across the island on the North Shore?

Or maybe, as Spieth suggested, it’s neither.

“He’s already been there,” Spieth said.

“He’s gone through the process. He’s succeeded at each level and just moved up the totem pole. When you get out to the big tour, sometimes it takes a little bit of time to win, or win in bunches.”

High-scoring Falcons to host Packers in NFC title game

ATLANTA – Matt Ryan and the high-scoring Falcons offense will have one more game in the Georgia Dome after all.

The Falcons will host the NFC championship game Sunday against Green Bay. The Packers beat Dallas, 34-31, in Sunday’s divisional playoff game.

Ryan continued his hot streak of turnover-free passing in leading Atlanta to a 36-20 win over Seattle in Saturday’s first divisional game.

The MVP candidate threw for 338 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions against the Seahawks.

It was Ryan’s fifth-straight game without an interception, leading to a five-game winning streak for Atlanta. He has 14 touchdown passes in that span.

Ryan and the NFL’s top-scoring offense impressed cornerback Richard Sherman and the Seahawks.

“They do a lot of things well,” Sherman said. “The quarterback gets the ball out, he doesn’t turn the ball over, so that will do it.”

Ryan was in top form in leading Atlanta to a 33-32 home win over Green Bay on Oct. 30. He completed 28 of 35 passes for 288 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions.

The Falcons (12-5) have leaned on Ryan and their balanced offense in their pursuit of the second Super Bowl appearance and first championship. Ryan kept the offense moving against Seattle even as All-Pro Julio Jones aggravated a toe injury.

Jones spent much of the second half on the sideline, but still had a game-high six catches for 67 yards and a touchdown in his highly anticipated matchup with Sherman.

Jones’ status will be closely watched this week. He missed two games this season with the sore toe. He still finished second in the NFL with 1,409 yards receiving on 83 catches, including six for touchdowns.

Coach Dan Quinn said Saturday that Jones’ injury was “no concern at the moment” but acknowledged “it’ll be sore.”

Added Quinn: “I anticipate him being ready to rock next week.”

Jones was not available for postgame interviews, adding to speculation about the severity of the injury.

Running backs Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman combined for seven catches for 102 yards, including a 14-yard scoring catch by Coleman.

“The ability for them to add another receiver to our offense has been critical for us. It really has,” Quinn said.

Coleman had 11 carries for 57 yards. Freeman had 14 carries for 45 yards and a touchdown. Seattle coach Pete Carroll said Atlanta’s run game wasn’t overwhelming, but it was effective.

“They didn’t run for a lot of yards today, but they ran well enough,” Carroll said.

“They ran with authority, I thought. It was a very impressive component. Somewhere in the fourth quarter, they were pounding us pretty good and we couldn’t stop them.”

Receivers Mohamed Sanu and Taylor Gabriel each had four catches.

The NFC championship game will be a dramatic final bow for the Georgia Dome. The facility, the team’s home for 25 years, will be demolished as the Falcons move into their new $1.5 billion Mercedes-Benz Stadium for the 2017 season.

The Falcons regularly play before sellout crowds, but they rarely open games with the stands full as fans battle Atlanta traffic.

On Saturday, most in the crowd of 71,155 were there well before the opening kickoff.

Late in the game, with the win a certainty, fans chanted “MVP! MVP!” for Ryan.

WASHINGTON – A next step for smart watches and fitness trackers?

Wearable gadgets gave a Stanford University professor an early warning that he was getting sick before he ever felt any symptoms of Lyme disease.

Geneticist Michael Snyder never had Lyme’s characteristic bull’s-eye rash. But a smart watch and other sensors charted changes in Snyder’s heart rate and oxygen levels during a family vacation. Eventually a fever struck that led to his diagnosis.

Say “wearables,” and step-counting fitness trackers spring to mind. It’s not clear whether they really make a difference in users’ health. Now Snyder’s team at Stanford is starting to find out, tracking the everyday lives of several dozen volunteers wearing devices that monitor more than mere activity.

He envisions one day having wearables that act as a sort of “check engine” light indicating it’s time to see the doctor.

“One way to look at this is, these are the equivalent of oral thermometers, but you’re measuring yourself all

the time,” said Snyder, senior author of a report released Thursday on the project.

Among the earliest hints: Changes in people’s day-to-day physiology may flag when certain ailments are brewing, from colds to Lyme to Type 2 diabetes, researchers reported in the journal PLOS Biology.

Interest in wearable sensors is growing along with efforts to personalize medicine, as scientists learn how to tailor treatments and preventive care to people’s genes, environment and lifestyle. The sensors are expected to be a part of the National Institutes of Health’s huge “precision medicine” study, planned to begin later this year.

But a first step is learning what’s normal for different people under different conditions.

The Stanford team is collecting reams of data – as many as 250,000 daily measurements – from volunteers who wear up to eight activity monitors or other sensors of varying sizes that measure heart rate, blood oxygen, skin temperature, sleep, calories expended, exercise and even exposure to radiation. That’s paired with occasional laboratory tests to measure

blood chemistry and some genetic information.

An initial finding: Blood oxygen levels decrease with rising altitudes during plane flights, in turn triggering fatigue. But toward the end of long flights, oxygen begins rising again, possibly as bodies adapt, the researchers reported.

It was that phenomenon that alerted Snyder, the longest-tested participant, “that something wasn’t quite right” on one of his frequent long flights.

Landing in Norway for a family vacation, Snyder noticed his oxygen levels didn’t return to normal as they always had before. Plus his heart rate was much higher than normal, which sometimes signals infection.

Sure enough, soon a low-grade fever left him dragging. He feared Lyme because two weeks before going abroad, Snyder had helped his brother build a fence in a tick-infested rural area in Massachusetts. He persuaded a Norwegian doctor to prescribe the appropriate antibiotic, and post-vacation testing back home confirmed the diagnosis.

Also during the study’s first two

years, Snyder and several other volunteers had minor cold-like illnesses that began with higher-than-normal readings for heart rate and skin temperature – and correlated with blood tests showing inflammation was on the rise before any sniffling.

In addition, the Stanford team detected variations in heart rate patterns that could tell the difference between study participants with what’s called insulin resistance – a risk factor for Type 2 diabetes – and healthy people.

No, don’t try to self-diagnose with your fitness tracker anytime soon.

The findings in Thursday’s report are intriguing but the study is highly experimental, cautioned medical technology specialist Dr. Atul Butte of the University of California, San Francisco, who wasn’t involved with the research.

“This kind of approach is going to help science more than the general public” until there’s better data about what’s normal or not, Butte said. “Remember, the baseline is always in motion. We’re always getting older. We’re always exposed to things. Just because there’s a deviation doesn’t mean it’s abnormal.”

Vitamin B-12, vitamin D, iron, zinc, calcium and essential fatty acids are key nutrients for proper development in babies and children. Getting an adequate amount of B-12, which is provided by milk and eggs in a traditional diet, and meeting the minimum requirement for iron, which is present in red meat, is of particular concern in the vegan diet.

As there are no known plant sources for vitamin B-12, and without meat to provide essential fatty acids and other nutrients, providing a nutritional supplement, such as a multivitamin, is essential to normal growth and good health.

Another concern is the plant-based diet is less nutrient-dense and more difficult to digest than the traditional diet. It not only takes more food to meet caloric and nutritional needs in a plant-based diet, it requires a greater amount of energy for the body to extract nutrients. Including concentrated sources of energy such as nuts and nut butters, soy products and legumes will help support appropriate growth.

A final thought – going vegan is a radical change. Perhaps suggest to your sister the family do a dry run, for instance Vegan Wednesdays for a month or two? If that works, then they can expand slowly until veganism becomes a family lifestyle.

Dear Doctors: My sister has decided to switch her entire family to a vegan diet, including her 2-year-old twins. But I’m really worried – is it possible for young children to stay healthy and get all of the nutrients a growing body requires?

Dear Reader: Unlike a vegetarian diet, which cuts out meat, poultry and fish, the vegan approach eliminates all animal-based products. It centers instead on whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, fruits, vegetables and leafy greens.

Some people choose a vegan diet for health reasons, others for ethical ones. But because not all nutrients essential to human health are present in plants, vegans face special challenges to ensure their diet is well-rounded.

A vegan diet for young children has gotten a lot of bad press recently. A mother in Pennsylvania, who fed her infant only nuts and berries in an effort to go vegan, was recently charged with child endangerment.

In Italy, where a number of vegan babies wound up in the hospital with malnutrition, some lawmakers want to make a plant-based diet illegal for anyone under 16.

But these are extreme cases. Proponents of plant-based diets say the real culprit is ignorance of proper nutritional principles, not veganism itself. With care and vigilance, and with the guidance of a pediatrician or registered dietitian, a well-balanced vegan diet can provide the nutritional essentials of children and adolescents.

Due to their more intensive nutritional requirements, children and adolescents are more susceptible to malnutrition when following an atypical diet. With a relatively short window in childhood during which critical growth in the brain, skeleton and internal organs takes place, it’s all too easy for a child’s diet to adversely affect future

Should I abide by his wishes and not allow her to have the phone, or do you think my points are valid? – Mom With Phone Issue Dear Mom: Wanting your daughter to have the cellphone in case of emergency seems valid to me. If you are her custodial parent, I think that prerogative belongs to you.

But I do have a question: Who took the phone away from your daughter? If you did it because she was abusing the privilege, then she will learn her lesson if you are consistent. If a teacher takes it away from her at school, there should be consequences and you should ensure they are enforced.

Dear Abby: I have an unusual problem. I’m very accident-prone. Over the past several years I have been in a cast many times, sometimes for long periods. My friends constantly tease me about it when what I’d really appreciate is a little compassion and maybe a little help while I am recovering. How do I let these people know their teasing is hurtful? – Wendy In California Dear Wendy: If you have been in a cast “many times” over the past few years, your friends might be suffering from compassion fatigue.

If their making light of your predicament is hurting your feelings, you have to tell them so.

And while you’re at it, tell them what you do need from them.

On a slightly different note, don’t you think it’s time to determine why you are so accident-prone? Is it clumsiness? Poor vision? Discuss this with your medical provider, because he or she might advise neurological testing, or even some sessions with a licensed mental health professional. Please consider this advice.

Dear Abby: I am a healthy, somewhat older lady with a reasonable appetite who unfortunately sleeps alone. Consequently, I have a few toys to help me on sleepless nights. One of my biggest worries, however, is if I should expire and my loved ones discover my toy collection after my demise, they will be shocked.

Danny Thomas said, “Truth is shorter than fiction.” If declarer can ruff a loser in the shorter trump hand, in truth it almost always gains an extra trick.

These North-South hands were bid by twins from England, Jason and Justin Hackett. Two clubs was natural and game-forcing. Note North’s careful three-diamond rebid. Yes, he had only three-card support, but those three honors were more powerful than four low cards would have been. Five no-trump asked South to pick a slam, and Justin did well to choose the 4-3 fit.

West led a trump. South took that on the board and ran the heart queen. West won and persevered with a second trump. However, declarer won on the board, played a heart to his ace, ruffed a heart, crossed to the spade ace, drew trumps and claimed. His 12 tricks were three spades, two hearts, four diamonds, two clubs and the heart ruff.

Every other South in a six-team event played in six no-trump, but only two succeeded. Do you see how to bring home six no-trump?

This slam is against the odds.

Probably most declarers hoped for a 3-3 club split, but the winning line was to lead a heart toward dummy’s queen. If West took the trick, South had 12 winners. Or, if West played low, declarer, after winning with dummy’s queen, could run his pointed-suit winners to squeeze-endplay West. The curious may work it out.

A 4-3 fit plays well when the trumps are strong and a ruff can be taken in the shorter trump hand -- as in this deal.
