Winter 1917-1918 Princeton Statewide snowfall records began to be kept in 1902. Although the period from the 1960s to the early 1980s are considered the snowiest in record history, the early 20th century was not without paralyzing winter snows.

The severe weather experienced during the December and January winter of 19171918, was very unusual. The winter season produced nearly 35 inches of snow, which made that winter the largest snowfall since Illinois snowfall data began in 1902.

In December 1917, high pressure and intense cold entered the Arctic portions of Alaska and pushed their way southward into the United States. The month of December became one of the severest cold waves on record over the northeastern portion of the country. The weather got worse in January 1918. During the first two weeks of the new year, snow covered much of the country and repeated snowstorms in the Midwest dumped large amounts of snow in the area.

On January 7, a major storm buried Chicago in what the Chicago Tribune called the “worst blizzard in the city’s history.”

The amount of snow that fell in a twenty-four hour period topped 13.5 inches, a new record for the city. The Tribune reported that “one-half of all Chicago street lights” were out of commission, and hundreds of automobiles were abandoned on streets and boulevards. Because of the storm, the city faced an immediate shortage of milk and fuel across the region. Once the blizzard passed, the storm dropped 14.9 inches of snow.

Less than a week later, on January 11 and 12, the area witnessed very strong, cold north to southwest winds over the middle portions of the United States, carrying the temperatures to nearly -20 degrees as far south as Tennessee.

Besides Chicago, central Illinois perhaps felt the full force of the storms.

In some sections, snow fell to a depth of twenty inches. The January snowstorms hit Princeton, which paralyzed the city, leaving 12-to 15-foot drifts, which snarled traffic and left train passengers stranded for days, not just in stations, but in stalled coaches and Pullman trains.

Speakers address need for community involvement, speaking truth to power

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday is not only a time to remember the past for the Rev. David Latimore of Mount Zion Baptist Church, but also to renew a commitment to justice and equality.

Latimore said as much to a crowd of parishioners and local leaders Sunday at a worship service that honored the memory and work of the civil rights leader.

“If ever there was a time for us to renew our commitment, now is the time.

If ever there was a time when our voices and our hands and our hard work is needed, now is that time,” he said to the crowd.

The worship service is done every year, but Latimore said he couldn’t think of a better time for it to occur than now, given the “tremendous changes” taking place in the United States, including the change in presidential administration with controversial Presi-

dent-elect Donald Trump.

“Here is an opportunity for us to come together and to promote the ideas of Dr. King [and] to renew our own commitment to seeing progress made in our very own city for the well-being of all,” Latimore said.

The theme of needing to be active in the community to help people and protest injustice was present throughout the service, which saw speakers from the Joliet chapters of the NAACP and the National Hook-Up of Black Women.

Mount Zion Baptist Church has a strong connection to the civil rights movement, as the late Rev. Isaac Singleton marched with King in the Alabama cities of Montgomery and Selma. Singleton brought King to Joliet in 1965 for an event at Memorial Stadium.

Latimore said King’s work continues to impact everyone’s lives and it was not only impactful to black communities, but to all.

“Today, even as we talk about issues of immigration rights or even if we look

at the progress women have made in society, we see evidence of the many battles that Dr. King fought,” he said.

The issues King faced continue to be prevalent and important today, including in Joliet, Latimore said. Even though King has been gone for decades, Latimore said people shouldn’t fool themselves into thinking serious issues regarding access to opportunity and equitable treatment don’t remain “within all spheres of our lives.”

“Now is not the time for us to abandon pursuit or the belief this country can live up to its creed: That men and women are truly created equal,” he said.

Mike Clark, president of the NAACP Joliet branch, said at the worship service that the social issues faced today are not new and there are resources and techniques available to resolve them, but the question remains if people have the will to do so.

Clark showed photos of King, including one in which he led a march in Washington, D.C., in 1963. Clark said that not only is King shown, but so are

all the people who showed up to the march.

“We have to show up today. … We can’t just show up on social media. We have to show up in the meetings, we have to show up to the gatherings, we have to show up when our children need us, we have to show up when it’s time to vote,” Clark said.

Debra Upshaw, Joliet chapter president of the National Hook-Up of Black Women, said King raised “aspirations and energies about what kind of community we could have.”

She said organizations with similar missions partnering for the betterment of communities will “ultimately be one of the greatest weapons that we have in the fight.”

“They may have different names or labels, but we face many of the same struggles as we did in the past,” she said.

Gateway opens addiction treatment center

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Gateway Foundation, the largest nonprofit addiction treatment provider in the state, is opening a facility in Joliet this week, which is good news and bad news.

“It’s really with a mixed heart that we come here today,” Gateway President and CEO Thomas Britton said Friday at a ribbon-cutting ceremony during an open house at the Joliet facility.

The Gateway outpatient center for alcohol and drug addiction treatment, at 1419 Essington Road in the Autumn Lakes Professional Center, opens Tuesday for clients.

Britton said a good part of the services provided by the Joliet office will be dedicated to people fighting opioid and heroin addictions.

“This is a community that is being hit like the rest of the country has,” Britton told the crowd gathered around him. “We’re here to help.”

Later during an interview, Britton said about four out of 10 clients at Gateway have heroin or opioid addictions, which is about twice the number just four years ago.

Britton said Gateway is the largest nonprofit provider of addiction services in Illinois and has facilities throughout the state. Many of those facilities are inpatient recovery facilities where patients will stay for weeks at a time.

The Joliet office is an outpatient facility, which is expected to ultimately treat between 80 and 100 clients. Many

The office was opened because of the number of Joliet-area clients being treated at Gateway centers elsewhere, as well as the number of referrals the agency has received from local sources, Scarpace said.

Clients who have graduated from a recovery center will continue to face challenges to avoid use of drugs and alcohol, he said.

The Joliet center, Scarpace said, provides “an opportunity for clients to come in and practice the skills they learned as inpatients.”

Hunger relief organization to hold fundraising event about gardening

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Northern Illinois Food Bank’s executive women’s council is inviting people to learn about gardening and support hunger relief at a fundraising event.

At the event called A Cup of Hope on March 5, Nancy Hatmaker Ristau will speak about her experiences in attracting wildlife, including butterflies, to her backyard garden.

During the event, people also will be able to share in gardening passions, mingle with friends and raise funds to help feed the hungry in the communities the Northern Illinois Food Bank serves, according to the organization’s

news release.

The event is being sponsored by the organization’s executive women’s council, which handles several fundraisers to support the Northern Illinois Food Bank’s mission and local food pantries, said Pat Fera, an executive women’s council member and director of the Workforce Investment Board of Will county.

“The Cup of Hope specifically focuses on the youth component of the food bank,” Fera said, referring to the programs the organization does for youths.

The Northern Illinois Food Bank serves 13 counties, including Will and Grundy, providing 57 million meals throughout those counties, including 12 million to south suburban counties.

Fera said the organization is working on opening a South Suburban Cen-

ter to expand services to Will, Grundy, Kendall and Kankakee counties.

In Will County alone, a study by Feeding America, a nationwide network of food banks, estimated about $29.6 million would be needed to solve hunger issues. In a 2014 study, the organization designated 8.8 percent of the county’s population as food insecure, or lacking in reliable access to sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food.

Nearly 100,000 people in the south suburban region are food insecure. “[The South Suburban Center] will allow us to have a donation center right here in the area but also get fresh produce and food to the local food pantries and kitchen,” Fera said.

Rachel Sweet took her double lung transplant and ran with it

MOKENA – Rachel Sweet’s double lung transplant was a double-edged sword.

Because Rachel’s cystic fibrosis was concentrated in her lungs, the transplant eliminated all signs of the disease, Jim Sweet of Mokena, Rachel’s father, said.

But the anti-rejection medication Rachel took also suppressed her immune system to a dangerous low – and the minor virus she caught in November 2016 wore down her body and destroyed her lungs.

The doctors’ goal, Jim said, was to get Rachel back on the transplant list in early 2017. But Rachel died Dec. 31. She was 19.

In a 2015 Herald-News story Rachel – then newly graduated from Lincoln-Way West High School in New Lenox – was college-bound, upbeat and full of plans for her future career as an accountant.

“I don’t know if I want to work for someone or have my own business,” Rachel had said, “but I don’t want to be low on the totem pole of accounting. I want to be up there, to be important.”

In her own way, Rachel was.

“She brought joy and happiness to everyone she met,” Jim said. “She just touched so many people; it was unbelievable. People liked being with her and talking with her. I think her legacy will show she was a strong young lady who loved life.”

As a baby, Rachel seemed like a normal healthy breastfed baby – until her mother, Sue Sweet, weaned her, Jim said. Rachel then had trouble gaining weight and developed a rash.

Genetic testing turned up the cystic fibrosis, a surprise as neither Jim nor Sue had family members with the disease, Jim said. Later, Rachel’s brother, Anthony Sweet, now 16 and a soccer player, also was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis.

Rachel initially did well with treatment.

“She didn’t play sports other than goofing around in the yard,” Jim said, “but she had a normal girl childhood growing up.”

That changed around the seventh grade, Jim said. Hospitalizations became more frequent and went from a mere two days to over a week. Instead

of centering around school and friends, life focused on Rachel’s illness and medical needs, he added.

“She just made us so proud – how she fought it so hard,” Jim said. “She just had a passion for life, smiling, and never complaining about anything.”

Out of necessity, Rachel was homeschooled and she turned to crafts and photography for recreation, Jim said. For the first three years of high school, Rachel was either sick or in the hospital.

But that changed March 15, 2014, when Rachel received a double lung transplant at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood.

The good news came just in time.

“Her lungs were pretty bad,” Jim said. “She did not have a lot of energy to talk. She couldn’t walk 100 feet without stopping.”

Health regained, Rachel was determined to graduate with her class, which she did on June 2, 2015.

“I was always determined to graduate with my friends,” Rachel had said.

“Even when I was homeschooled, I got the best grades I could. Every time I got through, it made me feel proud. It

gave me the extra push to keep going.”

Rachel attempted Joliet Junior College, but she didn’t have the stamina for it and decided to delay college for a time. Jim felt Rachel made a wise decision.

“From my standpoint, college wasn’t important. Living life was important, doing things she couldn’t do before – going to the store on her own, taking walks around the block, doing bike rides, hanging out with some of her friends,” Jim said. “She started doing the normal things other people take for granted.”

Rachel went to prom. She took weekend vacations with friends. She dated. She even took selfies. But she never kept a bucket list or looked too far in the future, Jim said.

“Whenever she did, she went into rejection and her plans went on hold,” Jim said.

Nevertheless, no one, including Rachel, foresaw last fall’s tragedy. She had hopes for her future, always.

“It’s sad that she’s gone, but I’m going to take her positive attitude and instill it in me,” Jim said. “I think that’s what she would have wanted.”

For Coal City church, hands help at home and across the world I’ve heard many people mention they are glad to say goodbye to 2016; it was a rough year. At the same time, some aren’t looking too happy about 2017.

Putting aside politics and personal problems, perhaps we can take away a few lessons from the ministries of Coal City United Methodist Church.

The Rev. Bradley Shumaker arrived at the United Methodist Church in Coal City just four days after the 2015 tornado.

The church stood ready with their own disaster relief team, having been through a similar storm just two years before.

Their church became a relief center to those who had no home to return to and a center to accept donations of food, paper goods, cleaning products and more from nearby communities and all over the nation.

In four weeks after the 2015 tornado, Coal City United Methodist Church provided 25,000 meals to tornado victims, volunteers and workers.

VIEWS Kris Stadalsky Shumaker knew to jump right in with his new congregation. In 2003 he had gone to Juarez, Mexico, with a group of other pastors to help build homes.

“I caught a real passion for it,” Shumaker said.

And now the congregation of the Coal City church has caught that same passion. This year they will send a group of 20 adults to build two cinder block homes in one week.

Juarez is a border town near El Paso of 1.5 million people – many are the poorest of the poor, Shumaker said.

Families trying to escape the poverty of southern Mexico would make it to Juarez only to find they couldn’t get to the U.S. They settled in makeshift towns, using cardboard and dried wood to construct homes.

Since his first trip, groups of United Methodist churches have gone to Juarez to build homes. So far they’ve constructed 36. While it doesn’t sound like a dent in a huge population, they are making progress, Shumaker said.

Juarez is a scary place, once considered the murder capital of Mexico.

For three years, starting in 2009, Shumaker and his other congregation were the only ones who went to continue the mission.

“We never felt unsafe,” he said, “because the mission is bigger than fear and love is bigger than fear.”

This year, six United Methodist churches will be assisting with rebuilding, and creating a future for many young children who live there.

“In the aftermath [of the violence in Juarez] we worked hard to rebuild our mission,” Shumaker said.

“It’s amazing how hardworking [the people] are and how committed they are to their families,” he said.

“It’s a beautiful culture that often gets overlooked.”

In 2016, Shumaker also led his Coal

City congregation on a mission to central Kentucky to build homes. This year the number of youth from the church will double to 20 high school students, along with the adults.

“It’s a transformation for a lot of these kids to see how others live and to learn about themselves,” Shumaker said.

Even closer to home, the United Methodist Women of Coal City participate in a ministry at Cunningham Children’s Home in Urbana by raising funds, making quilts and sitting on the board of directors. It’s one of many things the group does, Shumaker said.

Helping to rebuild lives, whether home in Coal City, across the state in Urbana or across the continent in Mexico, is what makes us human.

As Shumaker puts is, “love is bigger than fear.”

LOCAL BRIEFS A Crest Hill man died early Friday morning after being crushed by car parts.

Donald Coleman, 27, of the 500 block of Pasadena Avenue, was pronounced dead at 4:57 a.m. at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office spokeswoman Becky Schlikerman said.

Coleman suffered multiple injuries in the incident, which occurred in the 800 block of Bluff Road in Romeoville. The medical examiner’s office deemed Coleman’s death to be an accident.

Romeoville police were not immediately available to provide more information.

City of Joliet warns drivers of Osgood Street viaduct work

JOLIET – Beginning Monday, the Union Pacific Railroad will be doing repair work to the Osgood Street rail viaduct located between Chicago Street and Eastern Avenue in Joliet, according to a news release from the city of Joliet.

The road will remain open to through traffic, but drivers may experience short periods of time when the traffic is stopped

because of construction activities. Drivers are advised to use caution and seek alternate routes when traveling in the area.

The work is expected to be completed by Saturday.

Bonnie M. Disera (nee Furman), age 82, of Joliet, passed away after a long courageous battle with cancer and dementia on January 11 , 2017 at the Joliet Area Community Hospice Home surrounded by her loving family.

Bonnie was born in Joliet and was a lifelong area resident.

Survived by her three loving children, William “Billy” Disera, Carrie Disera-Crawford (Ronald Jr.) and Dr. Lanette Disera-Geissler (Douglas); three grandchildren, Caitlyn and Megan Crawford, Jack Geissler; cousins; nieces; and lifetime friend, Jean Reinhardt.

Preceded in death by her loving husband, William “Bill” Disera of 54 years; her parents, Antone and Barbara Furman (nee Bosnak); and her sister, Loretta Pruitt.

Bonnie enjoyed a 40-year career in real estate. She specialized in helping first time buyers and sellers and providing excellent customer service. She began her career with Johnson Realty. Shortly after, she was offered a sales position with Bell Realty where she spent 18 years and became one of Will County’s top real estate agents. In 1990, she started her own firm, Disera Realty, where she enjoyed continued success serving thousands of clients for the next 20 years. She was recipient of numerous sales awards and accolades from the Illinois Realtors Association and various Title Companies.

Bonnie loved cooking homemade Italian dishes for her family and friends. She also enjoyed shopping with her daughters and grandchildren and attending their curricular activities. She was a lifetime parishioner of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church.

Senate vows swift action on budget plan

SPRINGFIELD – If last week’s action is any indication, the Democratic and Republican leaders of the Illinois Senate are serious about trying to bust the state’s 18-month budget deadlock – quickly.

Democratic Senate President John Cullerton and Minority Leader Christine Radogno negotiated an ambitious, multi-part plan to end a nearly twoyear battle between Democrats and GOP Gov. Bruce Rauner, which has forestalled an agreed-upon annual state spending plan since 2015.

Promising to act on a package by month’s end, they introduced 13 measures Wednesday that included non-budget-related sweeteners for both sides. By Thursday, they had been rapidly assigned public committee hearings.

The package includes Democrat-friendly ideas such as a minimum-wage hike and an income-tax increase – which many in both parties agree is necessary to pare down a multibillion-dollar deficit. But it also seeks to meet Rauner’s demands for measures he said will improve the business and political climate. There’s legislation to freeze local property taxes,

Chicago police officer fatally shoots fleeing gunman

CHICAGO – A police officer confronted by a fleeing gunman suspected of shooting three people fatally shot the man early Sunday, Chicago police said.

Officers were on routine patrol in the East Garfield Park neighborhood on the city’s west side when they heard gunshots and began chasing a 34-year-old man, police said.

“Officers initiated a foot pursuit during which the offender ran to an alley and confronted them with a weapon. As a result of this action, one of the pursuing officers discharged his weapon striking the offender multiple times,” police said in a statement.

Officers requested medical aid for the suspect, police said. The man was later

a must-have for Rauner, and to tighten rules on when injured workers may make claims under the workers’ compensation law.

The Senate put one Rauner wish on the books already. It voted unanimously last week to limit, by Senate rule, its leaders to 10 years at the helm. Radogno promises to expand the idea with a constitutional amendment in the future.

Not only is the timeline aggressive – the Senate is scheduled to be in Springfield only three more days this month, including one reserved for the governor’s State of the State address – but so is the end game. The package of bills includes a pension-reform plan to reduce more than $111 billion in underfunded retirement accounts – a solution that has long eluded lawmakers.

The outstanding question is whether a Senate-approved deal would ultimately pass muster with Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan, who has refused to entertain Rauner’s pro-business agenda as part of budget talks.

Here’s a look at other major pieces of the legislation some in the Capitol have nicknamed the “grand bargain”: • Income tax increase: The personal income tax would jump from 3.75 percent to 4.95 percent, a plan to generate $4.1 billion a year. With spending cuts,

Democrats argue, that could eliminate what the governor’s office estimates will be a $5.3 billion deficit on the June 30 end of the fiscal year.

• Borrowing to pay down debt: The legislation would allow Illinois to borrow $7 billion by selling bonds to pay off overdue bills, which on Friday totaled $10.7 billion. The loan would get the state back to paying vendors and service providers within 30 days of receiving their bills.

• Covering costs: The plan includes $694 million to cover expenses for the first half of 2017 for seven agencies, including prisons and the Human Services Department. A six-month, temporary budget agreed to last summer expired Jan. 1, and the state is back to operating without appropriations.

• Pension reform: The proposal would eliminate pensions for future legislators. It aims to save up to $1 billion a year by offering what Cullerton has termed “consideration” – essentially a choice between how future pay raises figure into retirement income or whether pensioners receive cost-of-living adjustments in retirement.

• Teacher pensions: The measure would move Chicago’s responsibility for paying the employer’s portion of teachers’ pensions to the state – a $215 million obligation for 2017 alone.

That would remedy a long-running complaint about fairness from cashstrapped city officials, since the state already picks up the employer portion for teachers outside the city.

• Gambling expansion: Similar to a contentious proposal from previous years, the plan would create a landbased casino in Chicago and add riverboat casinos in Lake County, Rockford, the south suburbs of Chicago, Danville, and in Williamson County, in southern Illinois, as well as giving horse racing tracks a piece of the action by permitting slot machines at Arlington Heights, Cicero and Collinsville.

• Workers’ compensation: Democrats have argued they made important changes to the injured-workers program in 2011 and that the insurance industry hadn’t caught up to those cost-saving measures. This plan would further restrict claims when injuries are accidents, set maximum compensation rates and limit physical therapy, among other things.

• Minimum wage: The minimum wage would increase from $8.25 an hour to $9 on July 1, then by 50 cents each year until 2021, when it will be $11. According to the U.S. Labor Department, the wage exceeds $8.25 in 21 places outside Illinois, including the District of Columbia, which is tops at $11.50.

CHICAGO – Trustees for the University of Illinois are set to review a proposal that would boost its goals for doing business with companies owned by minorities, women and people with disabilities.

The proposal also would set a goal of awarding 3 percent of state contracts to small businesses owned by military veterans and disabled veterans, the News-Gazette reported.

The changes would bring the targets in line with recent changes in Illinois’ Business Enterprise for Minorities, Females and Persons with Disabilities Act. The new guidelines increased goals for businesses owned by minorities and women from 10 percent to 20 percent of total spending for construction proj-

Winter a good time for bird watching in Illinois

KANKAKEE – There are a lot of things that can’t be done in Illinois during the winter, but bird watching isn’t one of them.

Chris Gutmann of the Isle a la Cache Museum said that there are birds that can’t be seen any other time of year – starting with the common redpoll that was spotted last year at Isle a la Cache after making the trip south from the tundra of northern Canada or Alaska.

The Daily Journal reported that snowy owls and northern harriers make the trip from the north to Will County this time of year, and it turns out that bald eagles are a lot easier to spot in the winter as they fly up and down area rivers in search of food.

PARIS – Sending a forceful message to Israel’s prime minister and the incoming Trump administration, dozens of countries called Sunday on Israel and the Palestinians to revive work toward long-elusive peace – including an independent Palestinian state.

The closing declaration at a Mideast peace conference in Paris urged both sides to “officially restate their commitment to the two-state solution” and disassociate from voices that reject this.

It also warned them against taking one-sided actions that could hurt talks, an apparent reference to Israeli settlement building.

While the Palestinians welcomed Sunday’s declaration, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the conference “rigged” and cooked up behind Israel’s back to force it to accept conditions against national interests.

Thousands rally to resist health law repeal drive

WARREN, Mich. – Thousands of people showed up in freezing temperatures on Sunday in Michigan to hear Sen. Bernie Sanders denounce Republican efforts to repeal President Barack Obama’s health care law, one of dozens of rallies Democrats staged across the country to highlight opposition.

President-elect Donald Trump has vowed to overturn and replace the Affordable Care Act,

and majority Republicans in Congress this week began the process of repealing it using a budget maneuver that requires a bare majority in the Senate.

“This is the wealthiest country in the history of the world. It is time we got our national priorities right,” Sanders told the Michigan rally.

VALLETTA, Malta – Tens of thousands of people seeking better lives are expected to trek across deserts and board unseaworthy boats in war-torn Libya this year in a desperate effort to reach European shores by way of Italy.

More than 181,000 people, most so-called “economic migrants” with little chance of being allowed to stay in Europe, attempted to cross the central Mediterranean last year from Libya, Africa’s nearest stretch of coast to Italy. About 4,500 died or disappeared.

Hundreds already have taken to the sea this month, braving the winter weather. In the latest reminder of the journey’s perils, more than 100 people were missing off Libya’s coast over the weekend after a migrant boat sunk.

Some European leaders are warning of a fresh migration crisis when sea waters warm again and more people choose to put their lives in the hands of smugglers.

NEW YORK – The outgoing CIA director charged on Sunday that Donald Trump lacks a full understanding of the threat Moscow poses to the United States, delivering a public lecture to the president-elect that further highlighted the bitter state of Trump’s relations with American intelligence agencies.

John Brennan’s pointed message on national television came just five days before Trump becomes the nation’s 45th president amid lingering questions about Russia’s role in the 2016 election even as the focus shifts to the challenges of governing.

“Now that he’s going to have an opportunity to do something for our national security as opposed to talking and tweeting, he’s going to have tremendous responsibility to make sure that U.S. and national security interests are protected,” Brennan said on “Fox News Sunday,” warning that the president-elect’s impulsivity could be dangerous.

“Spontaneity is not something that protects national security interests,” Brennan declared.

Trump, who has unleashed a series of aggressive tweets against the U.S. intelligence community and his political rivals in recent weeks, did not respond to Brennan’s criticism.

Among Trump’s immediate challenges: the United States’ complicated relationship with Russia, crafting an affordable health care alternative that doesn’t strip coverage from

millions of Americans, and growing questions about the legitimacy of his presidency.

Civil rights legend Rep. John Lewis, D-Ga., is among several Democrats in Congress who vowed to skip Trump’s inauguration, charging that Russian interference in the 2016 election delegitimizes his presidency.

“There will be many more members who join us in this decision,” Rep. Jared Huffman, D-Calif., wrote Saturday on his Facebook page.

Trump’s lieutenants pushed back hard Sunday in a round of television interviews.

“I think it’s incredibly disappointing and I think it’s irresponsible for people like himself to question the legitimacy of the next United States president,” incoming White House chief of staff Reince Priebus said of Lewis on ABC’s “This Week,” insisting that Republicans did not question the legitimacy of President Barack Obama’s victory eight years ago. Vice President-elect Mike Pence said on “Fox News Sunday” that he hopes Lewis will change his mind and attend.

Priebus later acknowledged that conservatives – led by Trump himself – spent years questioning Obama’s eligibility to serve as president, suggesting he was not born in the United States.

Trump has done little to encourage unity in recent days, instead inflaming tensions with his critics through a series of tweets. The incoming president tweeted Saturday that Lewis should pay more attention to his “crime ridden” Atlanta-area district, adding that the civil rights leader was “all talk.”

Clutch Rodgers leads Packers past Cowboys

ARLINGTON, Texas – Aaron Rodgers didn’t need another Hail Mary this time.

Maybe just call it a “Half Mary.”

Rodgers threw a 36-yard pass to a toe-dragging Jared Cook on the sideline, and Mason Crosby kicked a 51yard field goal on the next play as time expired, sending the Packers to the NFC championship game with their eighth straight win while thwarting a Dallas rally in a 34-31 victory in the divisional round of the playoffs Sunday.

The throw on the run from Rodgers to Cook came on third-and-20 with 12 seconds left, and after the Cowboys tied the score twice in the final 4:08 after trailing by 18 in the first half and by 15 to start the fourth quarter.

“I love the opportunity to go out there and make plays,” said Rodgers, who threw for two touchdowns to give him 21 during the winning streak, although he threw his first interception during the run.

“I was disappointed we had a chance there at 28-13 to go up three scores and make it really difficult for ’em, and I threw a pick there on third down. We were able to come down and have two good drives toward the end of the game.”

Dallas’ rally was led by rookie sensations Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott in their playoff debuts, and the first two career postseason touchdown catches for star receiver Dez Bryant along with the first for 14th-year tight end Jason Witten.

“We’re not going to stop no matter what the score is, no matter the game,” Prescott said. “It shows the true character of this team.”

“It’s kind of a blur right now,” Crosby said. “When we have 35 seconds on the clock and that our offense can move the ball into field goal range and a manageable kick, that’s just special.”

Rodgers, who sparked last week’s wild-card win over the New York Giants

with another Hail Mary before halftime, is headed to an MVP showdown with Atlanta’s Matt Ryan next Sunday. It will be Rodgers’ third NFC title game – all on the road for Green Bay (12-6).

Steelers hold off Chiefs on Boswell’s 6 field goals

The Associated Press KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Who needs to reach the end zone when you have Le’Veon Bell chewing up yards and the clock, and Chris Boswell setting an NFL playoff record with six field goals?

Throw in a stingy Pittsburgh defense for most of Sunday night, and a multitude of mistakes by Kansas City, and the Steelers’ 18-16 victory sent them into the AFC championship game.

The Steelers (13-5) needed to hold off a last-ditch threat by the Chiefs (12-5) before advancing to face New England next Sunday night for a spot in the Super Bowl. The Patriots won at Pittsburgh, 27-16, but Ben Roethlisberger was injured on Oct. 23 and didn’t play.

Spencer Ware’s 1-yard touchdown run took Kansas City within 18-16. The Chiefs at first converted the 2-pointer to tie it, but tackle Eric Fisher – the first overall selection in the 2013 draft – was penalized for holding. The next try failed.

The Flyers scouted a familiar face as 2015 Herald-News Boys Player of the Year, Michael Wexter, is a starting right side for Pepperdine and had 11 kills and nine digs. California teams usually do not make the trip to Illinois, so this was a treat for the sophomore.

“It’s been a really long time since Pepperdine has come back to Illinois,” Wexter said. “It was awesome to be here. My family was here and my close friends were here. They got to see me play in college. Otherwise, my parents only get to come out to California to watch me play once a year.”

Pepperdine will look to clean up their first two games since in each of the first three matches, the Waves dropped the first two.

“We have to start from the beginning. It’s our intensity,” Wexter said.

“We start warming up right now when we have to just go for it.”

In a way, Lewis is still warming up, too.

The majority of the starters watched as redshirts or as incoming freshmen when the Flyers were the team to beat in 2015. The upperclassmen can put themselves in the position to be that team again in a few years.

For now, they can also be an exciting team that may not be finished pulling upsets. The Flyers will play at Penn State and Saint Francis next week.

ROMEOVILLE – The future just keeps getting brighter for the Lewis men’s volleyball team.

The No. 9 Flyers fired on all cylinders Saturday night in their 25-23, 25-22, 24-26, 25-21 victory over No. 5 Pepperdine. On Friday, Lewis topped Harvard, 25-19, 19-25, 25-13, 23-25, 15-12.

Both wins were huge for the team’s mentality.

“Last night, we played a match against Harvard that I thought we should have won in four but we went to a fifth game,” Flyers coach Dan Friend said. “We got a fifth-game win and last year, we struggled with fifth-game wins. Winning that game was a really good mental boost. “[Saturday] we talked about how many ranked wins we had last year.

We had a few, but not a lot. We saw a ranked opponent come in and last week we did not capitalize so we talked about going out and capitalizing. We are on the road the next two weekends. We don’t get a ton of opportunities where west coast teams come into the gym so we said, ‘Let’s do this.’ I thought the guys responded. They came out and played much better, solid volleyball.”

Lewis (3-1) is young. The two outside hitters are a redshirt freshman and a true freshman. The setter is a true sophomore and the libero and right side are redshirt sophomores. Only the two middles are seniors.

That made the weekend victories over Pepperdine and Harvard even bigger. The Flyers needed to see that

they can keep up with some top-ranked teams and win Game 5s.

“As a team, I’d say that we are pretty young so we’re trying to get acclimated playing together,” redshirt freshman outside Ryan Coenen said. “To have the opportunity to play at home against a ranked team was something that coach talked about before the game. It was a big opportunity and we were able to pull this off.”

Lewis won because of strong play across the board. There was a shining star, however.

Pepperdine had no answer for Jacob Schmiegelt, who had 15 kills, a .737 hitting percentage and five blocks (one solo). The senior middle was so effective because of the back row. Michael Simmons, Ryan Coenen and Kyle Bugee passed and defended strongly. Simmons tallied a court-high 17 digs, while Bugee added seven.

“Yoshi[moto] was putting them up perfect and I had this guy [Coenen] passing perfect,” Schmiegelt said.

Matt Yoshimoto had a big night with 47 assists, three aces, four block assists and a kill off a rocket second-ball swing.

More importantly, he won the battle of the brothers. His older brother Owen is the starting libero for the Waves (2-1).

Senior middle John Huddle totaled nine kills, a .750 hitting percentage and six blocks. Redshirt freshman outside Coenen matched the team-high 15 kills while adding four blocks (one solo) and two aces. Freshman Bugee (.368 hitting percentage) and redshirt junior Tom Beckmann (.312 hitting percentage) added eight kills.

Cubs must replace Ross’ leadership skills VIEWS

Baseball is a game of statistics.

Except when it’s not.

David Ross, the guest speaker for last Wednesday’s 40th annual University of St. Francis Brown & Gold Night, retired from the world champion Cubs after a 15-year major league career as a modest .229 hitter.

The last time he appeared in more than 100 games in a season was 2007.

Yet, his Cubs’ teammates, manager Joe Maddon, the coaching staff and broadcasters cannot say enough about how valuable he was handling the pitching staff, receiving pitches, throwing and playing the role of “Grandpa Rossy” in the clubhouse and on the bench, especially to the team’s many up-and-coming young stars.

It won’t be the same without him in 2017, but the Cubs had no intention of letting him go entirely even though he has retired as a player. It was announced Friday at the Cubs’ Convention that Ross has been named a special assistant to baseball operations.

Meanwhile, “It’s time to get back with my wife and kids,” Ross said while at USF. His immediate plans also call for completion of his book, “Teammate: My Life in Baseball,” which is due out sometime this year.

“During my career, I learned about winning, how to treat people and what being a good teammate is all about,” he said. “The book will cover that.”

Baseball history is filled with examples of teams that, on paper, were on track to repeat as world champions but did not because the chemistry somehow was weakened.

THE ROSS VOID

Even without Ross’ daily presence, the Cubs will be a favorite to repeat. But for that to become reality, someone must step up and fill the void. Perhaps a combination of Anthony Rizzo, one of Ross’ close friends, and Kris Bryant, the National League MVP, can get it done.

“Rizzo and Bryant are very good friends,” Ross said. “What you see between them, that’s genuine. Expectations are put on them that are not on most guys. To me, they were co-MVPs.” While Ross was all about team throughout his career, he also had a personal goal in 2016 that he kept largely to himself.

“It was a goal that was kind of private to hit the 100th homer [of his career],” he said. “When I got it, there was nothing better than the love I got from my teammates.”

Ross finished 2016 with 10 homers and his career with 106. In 2015 with the Cubs, he homered once.

“That was a difficult year, 2015,” he said. “I hit only one homer. My grandmother passed away that year.

It was in August that my wife called me two months ahead of when our third child was due. She was bleeding and had to go to the hospital. She had an emergency C-section. Our daughter was born at 3 pounds, 11 ounces. She was so tiny. And now, she is running our household as we speak.”

Ross’ career as a home run hitter got off to an auspicious start. On Sept. 2, 2002, when he was a rookie with the Dodgers, they were leading the Diamondbacks, 18-0, Arizona summoned ex-Cubs first baseman Mark Grace to the mound, and Ross homered off him with two outs in the ninth inning. As Ross once said, you should hit your first off someone people will remember.

GETTING THERE

Back to 2016. The Cubs won 103 regular-season games with their 39-year-old catcher in his leadership role.

Ross told a story about the night the Cubs clinched the NL Central title because the Cardinals lost.

“We lost the day we could have clinched the division, and my family was back home,” he said. “So I was

alone. I tried to get an Uber ride or a cab, but there were so many people leaving the park, and it was a nice night, so I decided to walk. I live in Lincoln Park, two miles from the park.

“Each bar that I passed, it was getting louder and louder. The last inning [of the Cardinals-Giants game], I stopped and looked in and the place went crazy. The Cardinals lost.

“I stopped at the next bar, where there weren’t as many people. I thought, ‘I’m by myself, but I should be celebrating. We won the division.’

The bartender recognized me and said, ‘put your money away, it’s on me.’ ” Then it was on to the playoffs, beginning with an NL Divisional Series victory over the Giants, secured thanks to a four-run ninth-inning rally in Game 4.

“I’ve never been part of anything like that come-from-behind Giants game,” Ross said. “It was cool that Javy [Baez] got the game-winning RBI. The at-bats our young guys have, regardless of the situation, never cease to amaze me.”

The Cubs then faced the Dodgers in the NLCS and took care of business in six games.

“We put up five in four innings on [Clayton] Kershaw the second time we faced him,” Ross said. “That’s one thing about our guys, they make great adjustments the second time they see a pitcher.

“Beating the Dodgers was really cool, especially doing it here at Wrigley Field. Just running around after the game and waving at everyone in

Ross caught all four victories for Boston when the Red Sox won the 2013 World Series, and he was hoping for a Cubs-Red Sox matchup. The Indians spoiled those thoughts, however.

“I also was rooting for a Boston-Cubs World Series because Mike Napoli is a good friend,” he said.

“But Cleveland was playing the best baseball. They deserved to be there.”

The Cubs were down three games to one, but Ross, who would catch Jon Lester in Game 5, kept things steered in a positive direction.

“I told the young guys after Game 4, ‘Daddy is starting tomorrow.

Daddy’s got this,’ ” Ross said. “We needed to get on the board early in Game 5 and Bryant hit that homer.

It felt great to be in that game. I had to sit on the bench for the first two losses, and that really gets to you.”

Game 7 in Cleveland was a classic as the Cubs won, 8-7, in 10 innings after relinquishing the lead on Rajai Davis’ three-run, eighth-inning homer off Aroldis Chapman.

That came after the Indians scored twice in the bottom of the fifth to get back within 5-3 – moments after Ross entered the game. The catcher made a wild throw to first – “I almost killed Rizz [Rizzo]” – on Jason Kipnis’ dribbler, then two runs scored as Lester’s wild pitch bounced away off Ross’ mask.

Ross, though, made amends with a solo homer in the sixth off Andrew Miller.

“I rushed it a hair on Kipnis’ ball,” Ross said. “Then a breaking ball hits me in the mask, and Kipnis scores from second. I’m in the game two minutes and give ’em two runs. I was not in a good place after that.

“The next inning I went deep against Andrew Miller. I had a good at-bat against him in Game 1, and he got me on a 3-2 slider. He threw one heater up and away, then he threw one down where I like it. I let two runs in, thank God I got one back.”

As for Davis’ three-run, game-tying homer, Ross said, “We went down and in on Rajai, which is his hot spot. It was one of the worst feelings ever when he hit that slider over the fence.”

The finish, though, was euphoria.

Ross’ playing career ended being carried off the field on the shoulders of teammates Bryant, Rizzo and Jason Heyward.

CHICAGO – Jason Pominville scored in the third period, Devan Dubnyk made 33 saves and the Minnesota Wild beat the Blackhawks, 3-2, on Sunday night to grab sole possession of the top spot in the Western Conference.

Nino Niederreiter and Chris Stewart also scored as Minnesota earned its fourth straight win and improved to 171-1 since Dec. 4. The Wild also beat the Hawks for the eighth straight time.

Minnesota (28-9-5) jumped in front for good when Marco Scandella shot the puck behind the net and it caromed right to Pominville standing all alone on the right side of the crease.

He knocked it into the open net for his sixth of the season at 5:08.

Minnesota defenseman Ryan Suter was sent off for tripping with 22.4 seconds left, but the Hawks were unable to get a good look at the goal even with the 6-on-4 advantage.

Patrick Kane scored twice for the Hawks (27-14-5), who were coming off an ugly 6-0 loss at Washington on Friday night. Artem Anisimov, battling an illness, had two assists, and Corey Crawford made 29 stops.

In addition, by giving your son the HPV vaccine, you also will decrease the likelihood the virus will be passed on to other people. Providing the vaccine to boys nationwide will lead to less HPV in the community, which will in turn lead to a decrease in cervical, penile, anal and oral cancers.

The biggest problem with the HPV vaccines is the rate of vaccinations. Only 6 of 10 adolescent girls have started the HPV vaccine series, and only 5 of 10 adolescent boys have started it. As there is a two- to three-shot regimen for these vaccines, I can understand if your son does not want to get the vaccine simply to prevent a hypothetical cancer or wart.

However, as a society, we vaccinate against many other illnesses at a much higher rate even when the incidence of those illnesses is quite low. HPV is a very common infection and leads to multiple cancers and genital warts. I’m glad your daughter received the vaccine. Your son should get it too.

Dear Reader: The vaccine against HPV infection initially was created for females younger than 26 to reduce the risk of cervical cancer. Human papilloma virus, or HPV, has been shown to be the cause of virtually all cervical cancer cases in women. Thus, if you decrease the possibility of infection with HPV, you would decrease the rates of cervical cancer, a disease diagnosed in 12,000 to 13,000 women in the United States each year. That’s all for the good among females, but your question – a logical one – was about the benefit to males.

In men, HPV infection can lead to penile cancers, anal cancers and oral cancers. It has been estimated that 70 percent of cancers of the oropharynx are related to HPV. If that is the case, HPV-related cancers are diagnosed in about 11,000 men in the U.S. per year, so the vaccine would appear to have benefit for males as well.

The other benefit of the vaccine – for both men and women – is the prevention of genital warts. These warts are not life-threatening, but they’re more than a nuisance to the people who get them.

The Gardasil vaccine, the most common HPV vaccine, protects against four types of HPV. In addition to protecting against HPV types 16 and 18, which cause many HPV-related cancers, the vaccine also protects against types 6 and 11, which cause 90 percent of genital warts.

This week, let’s look at the candidates for the Yeh Bros. Best Bid Deal of the Year award from the International Bridge Press Association. (Unfortunately, all of the declarer-play candidates are too complicated for this length of column. Shortly, I will send them out to subscribers to my website: www.bridgeforeveryone. com.)

First, let’s see what a cruel game bridge can be. Sitting North-South were world champions Steve Robinson and Peter Boyd. The deal occurred in the Norman Kay Platinum Pairs last March in Reno.

Three clubs showed four controls: two aces, or one ace and two kings, or four kings. Three no-trump was natural and forcing. Four clubs was Puppet Stayman. Four spades guaranteed a five-card suit. Five hearts was an artificial slam-try in spades.

Six clubs was a grand-slam try. Seven clubs suggested a final contract. Seven hearts asked North to bid seven no-trump if he had clubs headed by the queen-jack.

Note that seven no-trump would have made if clubs had been 3-2, but seven spades was better.

Boyd won trick one with his heart ace, drew trumps and turned to clubs. When they split 4-1, South ruffed the fourth round, establishing a discard for his heart loser on the fifth club. But that only got him up to 12 tricks: five spades, two hearts, one diamond and four clubs. He also needed the diamond finesse, but that lost and the contract went down one.

East-West gained a lucky 11.5 out of 13 matchpoints.

Sealed proposals for the construction of the Forest Park Phase 1 Water Main Improvements - City of Joliet Contract No. 2220-0317 for the City of Joliet, Will County, Illinois, will be received at the Office of the City Clerk, City of Joliet Municipal Building, 150 West Jefferson Street, Joliet, Illinois 60432 until 10 A.M., February 24, 2017, and at that time will be publicly opened and unit price total read aloud.

Description of Work. The proposed construction consists of installing approximately 1,200 feet of 6-8-inch, 800 feet of 12-inch, 20 feet of 14-inch, and 1,600 feet of 16-inch ductile iron water main, including new hydrants, valves, water services and other miscellaneous items of work.

Information for Bidders. Any contract or contracts awarded under this invitation for bids are expected to be funded in part by a loan from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA). Neither the State of Illinois nor any of its departments, agencies, or employees is or will be a party to this invitation for bids or any resulting contract. ADVERTISEMENT FOR BIDS CITY OF JOLIET, ILLINOIS Time and Place of Opening Bids. Sealed proposals for the construction of the Marycrest Phase 2 Water Main Improvements - City of Joliet Contract No. 2224-0317 for the City of Joliet, Will County, Illinois, will be received at the Office of the City Clerk, City of Joliet Municipal Building, 150 West Jefferson Street, Joliet, Illinois 60432 until 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, February 28, 2017 and at that time will be publicly opened and unit price total read aloud.

Description of Work. The proposed construction consists of the installation of approximately 1,930 lineal feet of 8" ductile iron water main, 60 lineal feet of 6" ductile iron water main and appurtenances; 3,500 lineal feet of 1" copper services, lawn restoration; and other miscellaneous items of work in the Marycrest subdivision. The contract will include all work necessary to install the water main, restore the roadway, install the water service lines via directional drilling, reconnect existing water service lines and perform all restoration to return the area to its original condition.

Information for Bidders. Any contract or contracts awarded under this invitation for bids are expected to be funded in part by a loan from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA). Neither the State of Illinois nor any of its departments, agencies, or employees is or will be a party to this invitation for bids or any resulting contract.
