Shorewood Police Department Deputy Chief Jason Barten said residents near Route 52 and River Road called police to report an intruder who had come into the house without permission. Prince Barajas, 23, had left before officers arrived, but was

Barten said investigators believe Barajas was walking through the neighborhood on his way home from a nearby tavern.

Barajas was arrested Monday on charges of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, residential burglary, unlawful restraint and criminal trespassing. He was booked into the Will County Jail and is being held on $75,000 bond.

JJC board approves tax abatement deal for Minooka warehousing business

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Joliet Junior College board approved a three-year property tax abatement – or reduction – for a company in Minooka that plans to expand its footprint.

Before JJC trustees at Tuesday’s meeting was a request from the Grundy Economic Development Council for JJC to participate in a tax abatement for building expansion by United States Cold Storage in Minooka.

The company specializes in providing temperature-controlled refrigerated warehousing and distribution services and solutions, according to JJC. The company plans to add 100,000 square feet to its current facility, which is 450,000 square feet. The tax abatement deal also is being proposed to eight other taxing bodies, including Grundy County and Minooka village.

The estimated taxes at the end of the abatement would be $881,000 and JJC’s share would be $29,260.

Trustees voted, 6-2, in favor of the proposal, with Trustees Maureen Broderick and Alicia Morales voting against it.

Broderick said after the meeting that she thinks U.S. Cold Storage can support itself and doesn’t need the abatement. She also said JJC has to keep watch over deficits in the budget.

“I don’t like giving away money that we could’ve been saving,” she said.

Morales said she voted against the proposal for the same reason as Broderick, saying the college is in a financial situation and she can’t see the proposal being justified at this time.

MAP grants

Morales asked Kristin Mulvey, JJC Foundation executive director, if the foundation is doing anything to help the college offset the more than $1 million it’s not receiving from the state for Monetary Award Program funding.

MAP grants, which do not need to be repaid, are given to state residents who attend MAP-approved colleges and demonstrate a financial need. No state funding for MAP was included for the current fiscal year.

Among the foundation’s donation efforts, Mulvey said the foundation has been focused on raising money from area companies and making proposals for funds.

“We’re just really hitting the pavement hard for companies to help our students,” she said.

She said a $250,000 gift from Citgo will help the foundation give $10,000 worth of scholarships to students every year.

Lincoln-Way taxpayers group to hold event in February

fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Several candidates for the Lincoln-Way District 210 school board plan to be at a public forum in February, but the Citizens For 210 slate has declined out of a concern of bias.

The Lincoln-Way Area Taxpayers Unite group will hold the candidates’ forum at 7 p.m. Feb. 2 at Lincoln-Way Central High School. The moderator is Kristen McQueary, a Chicago Tribune editorial board member.

The group has long been critical of the district’s financial management and lack of transparency, and previously sued the district in an unsuccessful lawsuit to block the closing of Lincoln-Way North High School. The majority of the plaintiffs were North parents.

According to a Monday news release from the group, out of the 13 candidates running for the board for the April elections, six plan to attend the forum: board President Dee Molinare; board members Christopher Luchetti, Joseph

Kirkeeng and Joseph Kosteck; Aaron Janik; and former LWATU Vice President Robert Ripp.

However, five candidates who are part of the Citizens For 210 slate stated Dec. 31 on their Facebook page that they’ve declined because they’re concerned it will not be a “neutral, unbiased event.”

Karen Town, Lee Talley, Cathy Pleasant, Gus Yiakos and Ben Yomtoob are part of the slate.

“There’s no way we think we would come out of this with a positive outcome,” Yomtoob said.

He said Citizens For 210 is interested in an opportunity to interact with all 13 candidates, but LWATU isn’t the right organization to sponsor the event, as it’s stated it plans to make endorsements after the forum.

The slate also stated LWATU sent out a news release about Ripp’s candidacy, implying “de-facto endorsement” and several “prominent members” of LWATU – whom Yomtoob declined to name – have said they will not vote for

Citizens For 210 members.

Stacey Ripp, Robert Ripp’s wife, said LWATU’s news release and the forum does not guarantee the group’s endorsement of her husband, as he should be treated like any other candidate.

She stated in a Facebook response to the slate that she removed herself as the event’s organizer and her husband stepped down from LWATU because they did not want the “appearance of conflict of interest with the forum.” She also wanted to help her husband’s campaign.

Robert Ripp said he considered running because he’s familiar with the finances of the district and has been involved in the district.

“I thought I could be a benefit to the district – to help from the financial standpoint,” he said.

The forum is an opportunity for candidates to speak with the public, Stacey Ripp said.

“Why would you pass up an opportunity to get your ideas out there?” she said.

Yomtoob said the slate doesn’t have an issue with Robert Ripp running, as they have respect for him and LWATU. However, he said they don’t see any scenario where LWATU does not endorse him and the slate wouldn’t have an opportunity to earn an endorsement.

While there is some association between LWATU and Citizens For 210, as Talley was a LWATU supporter, Yomtoob said the slate is trying to be a “broad-based, cross-community group.”

“We’re trying to look at a bigger picture of what’s best for our candidacy,” Yomtoob said. “We felt we need to wait for someone to come forward who will do this in a neutral way and not appear to take any sides or positions.”

Stacey Ripp said LWATU has always been about the whole district and wanting to keep the public informed about it. The group stated in its news release Monday that the forum is a “nonpartisan event.” “[The forum] really is for the good of the community and the public to come and ask questions,” she said.

Emotional Obama comforts, encourages U.S.

CHICAGO – President Barack Obama bid farewell to the nation on Tuesday in an emotional speech that sought to comfort a country on edge over rapid economic changes, persistent security threats and the election of Donald Trump.

Forceful at times and tearful at others, Obama’s valedictory speech in his hometown of Chicago was a public meditation on the many trials the U.S. faces as Obama takes his exit. For the challenges that are new, Obama offered his vision for how to surmount them, and for the persistent problems he was able to overcome, he offered optimism that others, eventually, will.

“Yes, our progress has been uneven,” Obama told a crowd of some 18,000. “The work of democracy has always been hard, contentious and sometimes bloody. For every two steps forward, it often feels we take one step back.”

Yet Obama argued his faith in America had only been strengthened by what he’s witnessed the past eight years, and he declared: “The future should be ours.”

Brushing away tears with a handkerchief, Obama paid tribute to the sacrifices made by his wife – and by his daughters, who were young girls when they entered the big white home on Pennsylvania Avenue and leave as young women. He praised first lady Michelle Obama for taking on her role “with grace and grit and style and good humor” and for making the White House “a place that belongs to everybody.”

Soon Obama and his family will exit the national stage, to be replaced

by Trump, a man Obama had stridently argued poses a dire threat to the nation’s future. His near-apocalyptic warnings throughout the campaign have cast a continuing shadow over his post-election efforts to reassure Americans anxious about the future.

Indeed, much of what Obama accomplished during his two terms – from health care overhaul and environmental regulations to his nuclear deal with Iran – could potentially be upended by Trump. So even as Obama seeks to define what his presidency meant for America, his legacy remains in question.

The political world was reeling from new revelations about an unsubstantiated report that Russia had compromising personal and financial information about Trump.

Obama made only passing reference to the next president. When he noted he would soon be replaced by the Republican, his crowd began to boo.

“No, no, no, no, no,” Obama said.

One of the nation’s great strengths, he said, “is the peaceful transfer of power from one president to the next.”

Earlier, as the crowd of thousands chanted, “Four more years,” he simply smiled and said, “I can’t do that.”

Still, Obama offered what seemed like a point-by-point rebuttal of Trump’s vision for America.

He pushed back on the isolationist sentiments inherent in Trump’s trade policies. He decried discrimination against Muslim Americans and lamented politicians who question climate change. And he warned about the pernicious threat to U.S. democracy posed by purposely deceptive fake “news” and a growing tendency of Americans to listen only to information that confirms what they already believe.

Get out of your “bubbles,” said the politician who rose to a prominence

with a message of unity, challenging divisions of red states and blue states.

Obama also revived a call to activism that marked his first presidential campaign, telling Americans to stay engaged in politics.

“If you’re tired of arguing with strangers on the internet,” Obama said pointedly, “try to talk with one in real life.”

With Democrats still straining to make sense of their devastating election losses, Obama tried to offer a path forward. He called for empathy for the struggles of all Americans – from minorities, refugees and transgender people to middle-aged white men whose sense of economic security has been upended in recent years.

Paying tribute to his place as America’s first black president, Obama acknowledged there were hopes after his 2008 election for a post-racial America.

“Such a vision, however well-intended, was never realistic,” Obama said, though he insisted race relations are better now than a few decades ago.

The former community organizer closed out his speech by reviving his campaign chant, “Yes we can.” To that, he added for the first time, “Yes we did.”

of activists to make a difference – the driving factor behind Obama’s optimism in the face of so much anxiety, he said. Although the coalition of young Americans and minorities who twice got Obama elected wasn’t enough to elect Democrat Hillary Clinton to replace him, Obama suggested their day was still ahead.

“You’ll soon outnumber any of us, and I believe as a result that the future is in good hands,” he said.

Steeped in nostalgia, Obama’s return to Chicago was less a triumphant homecoming than a bittersweet reunion bringing together loyalists and staffers, many of whom have long since left Obama’s service, moved on to new careers and started families. They came from across the country – some on Air Force One, others on their own – to be present for the last major moment of Obama’s presidency.

After returning to Washington, he will have less than two weeks before he accompanies Trump in the presidential limousine to the Capitol for the new president’s swearing-in. After nearly a decade in the spotlight, Obama will become a private citizen, an elder statesman at 55. He plans to take some time off, write a book – and immerse himself in a Democratic redistricting campaign.

Fire damages century-old Joliet house Tuesday morning

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Fire caused heavy damage to a vacant house Tuesday on Hickory Street.

Joliet Deputy Fire Chief Ray Randich said firefighters were called about 11

a.m. to 311 N. Hickory St. He said the blue two-story home was unoccupied and no one was injured by the blaze, which filled the street with smoke.

said.

Firefighters used hydrants and firetrucks to spray the building and the fire was considered under control by 2:30 p.m., Joliet Battalion Chief Ron Schroeder said.

Investigators were called to the scene Tuesday afternoon to determine

the cause. Schroeder said the damage is “extensive,” but the city building inspector determined the structure did not need to be demolished immediately.

According to Herald-News files, the home was built more than 100 years ago for Perry J. Hobbs, a fire insurance adjuster.

Trustee Garrett Peck said the project will have an economic impact because not only does it reduce vehicle traffic, it will provide opportunities for small businesses to service people before and after work. Peck said he hasn’t heard any negative feedback from residents about the project.

“I think the community has already accepted this is going to be some sort of a transportation facility,” Peck said.

The 40-year agreement would expire in 2057, but if for some reason there’s interest from either party in canceling the agreement within the first 20 years, there will be costs that are incurred.

If Pace were to cancel the agreement, it would pay the village for demolition costs incurred by the village to repurpose the property. If the village canceled the agreement, the village would be on the hook for construction costs for building the facility.



JOLIET – Firefighters were forced to stage a breakout Monday after an urban explorer found herself locked inside a cell at the Joliet Correctional Center.

Although the facility on Collins Street has been closed to the public since 2002, two teenage girls were able to get in through a hole in the fence, according to Illinois State Police.

“About 2:45 p.m., they were wandering around the building when one of them managed to lock herself inside a cell,” Joliet Fire Department Battalion Chief Mike Stromberg said. “They didn’t call 911, but did call the fire department’s front office.”

Firefighters found the teens and used a sledgehammer to break through a brick wall to free the girl, Stromberg said.

“Her jail time was about 45 minutes,” Stromberg said.

The teens, who are not from the area, will face trespassing charges, according to state police reports.

PLAINFIELD – The Plainfield Village Board approved an intergovernmental agreement with Pace on Monday night that will pave the way for a Park-n-Ride facility on Van Dyke Road.

Once open, the facility would have room for 400 parking spaces and an additional 200 spaces, if expanded.

The board unanimously approved the agreement. Trustee Brian Wojowski was absent.

The Park-n-Ride would be on about 10 acres of a 58-acre village-owned plot that was once primed for the STAR Line railway project, which would have connected commuters from the southwest suburbs all the way to the northwest suburbs.

That project fell apart, but Pace has stepped in to help meet public transportation needs.

Village Administrator Brian Murphy said, in a video of the meeting the village posted to YouTube, that the vil-

lage bought the land with the intent to one day use it for a transit lot.

“This is a very big deal,” Murphy said. “This has been an ongoing project.”

As part of the agreement, Pace will reimburse the village for costs of the project.

Murphy said there are three points during the design phase at which the village would pay the design firm and PACE would reimburse the village completely within 30 days. The same goes for the construction phase.

According to the agreement, costs cannot exceed $1 million for design and engineering of the facility and they cannot exceed $4.8 million for construction. Most of the money for the project would come from the 2018 budget, Murphy said, but a 2017 budget amendment would be required if some work was done during that year. The project would be paid for through the village’s capital fund before PACE’s reimbursement.

Large home in Plainfield commercial district gets special residential use

mmallory@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – The Plainfield Village Board approved several property-related items at a meeting Monday night.

One of the first homes visible when crossing the railroad tracks heading south on Route 126 into the village will receive up to $50,000 in repairs.

On Monday, the board approved special use for the property at 23904 W. Main St., located at the intersection of Route 126 – also called Main Street in that area – and Michigan Street, which was at one time a home day care.

The special use allows a two-family living arrangement in a business zoning district. The applicant, Christina Tyrell, had a signed contract to buy the property contingent on the board’s approval.

The property features an old, more than 5,000-square-foot home converted into a multi-family dwelling.

Tyrell’s daughter intends to live in one unit and the other unit would be rented. Tyrell intends to renovate the neglected property at a cost of up to

“That would be such a good thing for that busy corner to have this building repaired and fixed,” Trustee Margie Bonuchi said in a YouTube video of the meeting posted by the village.

Village Planner Jon Proulx said the applicant was directed to seek special use by staff, rather than to pursue a full rezoning to residential. The village’s comprehensive plan pegs commercial development as the ideal use for the property, but the market isn’t there yet. “[Special use would] allow for the residential use without removing the commercial potential either now or in

the future,” Proulx said in the video.

There were previously two families living in the house, but the property lost its special use privilege when it became vacant. Trustee Bill Lamb noted the new property owner has said she’d cooperate with redevelopment if the demand arises.

“We get something that’s a whole lot better than what we have right now,” Lamb said in the video.

Trustee Ed O’Rourke voted against the special use. He said he was concerned with the intent of the comprehensive plan, which labels the area in which the property is located as a business district. Trustee Brian Wojowski was absent.

The board also approved: • A special use for a beauty and nail salon at 12443 S. Route 59, known as European Beauty Lounge LLC. • A rezoning of 15233 S. Joliet Road, where Route 30 – also called Joliet Road in that area – meets Route 59, from residential to business.

In observance of the holiday, City Hall will be closed Monday, and the parking decks will be free. There will be no enforcement of the parking meters.

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – For the fourth consecutive year, the University of St. Francis in Joliet was ranked on U.S. News & World Report’s Best Online Programs list.

Each year, U.S. News & World Report does an annual ranking of online programs to help students researching their options compare the academic quality of more than 1,200 distance learning programs, according to a USF news release.

The programs from USF that were ranked include the online bachelor’s, online master’s in business administration, and graduate online programs for

education and nursing.

“This has been a tradition that has been building for over 20 years,” said Arvid Johnson, USF president.

He said almost 20 years ago, the university was one of the first colleges to do online courses. He said the quality of online education at the university has been the results of past presidents.

“This is a validation of quality,” he said of the ranking.

The university serves 3,850 students nationwide, offering undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs in the arts, sciences, business, education, nursing and social work.

Under the 2017 ranking, the university’s online bachelor’s degree program

placed 92nd of 308 schools ranked, up eight places since 2016.

The online MBA program placed 119th of 239 schools ranked, up five places since 2016. The graduate online education programs placed 29th out of 262 schools ranked, up 66 places since 2016.

The graduate online nursing programs at USF placed 29th out of 140 schools, up 40 places since 2016.

“These rankings now place USF’s online graduate business, education programs and online MBA programs at the very top of the list among top Illinois private colleges,” USF officials stated in the news release.

U.S. News & World Report’s method-

ology for the 2017 Best Online Program list are based on a number of factors and weighted differently per program, according to USF. The factors considered include student engagement, student services and technology, admissions selectivity, faculty credentials, and training and peer reputation.

“This is a pretty comprehensive ranking,” Johnson said.

He said one of the reasons the university has been successful is because it has full-time faculty teaching in the online programs.

The online graduate nursing programs for Lewis University in Romeoville tied for 87th with four other colleges in the rankings.

Morris Fire Protection and Ambulance District responds to structure fire

MORRIS – Morris Fire Protection and Ambulance District responded to a fire Tuesday afternoon at 2608 Indian Grass Road in Morris.

Deputy Chief Bob Wills said that when firefighters arrived on the scene, they found a fire in the kitchen that was

extinguished within five minutes of arriving on the scene.

“There were dogs in the residence that had to be removed so our fireman could enter,” Wills said. “The homeowner, who was home, and the dogs got out of the home and are accounted for.”

Wills said the fire is under investigation, but appears it started in the kitchen, where it was contained.

LOCAL BRIEF Police: Joliet pizza deliveryman robbed by boy with knife

JOLIET – A 17-year-old boy was arrested Monday after allegedly mugging a pizza deliveryman in Joliet.

Deputy Chief Ed Gregory said the 24-year-old employee was delivering a pie about 6:40 p.m. in the 100 block of Logan Avenue when he was jumped from behind and knocked to the ground. The victim was confronted by a man wearing a black ski mask and holding a steak knife, Gregory said.

“The [robber] took a small amount of cash and the victim’s boots, but the victim was able to grab the knife and [the robber] fled eastbound,” Gregory said.

The deliveryman called police and was later treated for a cut to his finger.

Monday evening’s brief snowfall was a significant help to the investigation as officers were able to follow footprints to the 100 block of Adella Avenue.

“They were given consent to search the residence and found the proceeds from the robbery ... a ski mask and the cellphone used to order the pizza,” Gregory said.

“They also found a knife set in the kitchen, which had one knife missing.”

The teen was arrested on charges of armed robbery and aggravated battery and booked into the River Valley Juvenile Detention Center.

Offices planned for former diocese building

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Catholic Charities may move offices into one of the old Diocese of Joliet buildings that were vacated three years ago.

The plan marks the first potential re-use of the property since the Diocese of Joliet left the three-building complex and moved to its current offices in Crest Hill in December 2013.

The diocese no longer owns the property located along Bridge Street between Center and Summit streets. It was sold on Sept. 28 to a group of private investors.

Catholic Charities is looking at leasing the former chancery building on Summit Street. The entire building would be used for administrative offices for the Head Start program if they are moved there, Executive Director Glenn Van Cura said.

But Catholic Charities also is looking at other sites, Van Cura said.

“We have several sites we’re looking into. It comes down to costs,” Van Cura said.

The building has to be made compliant with building standards set by the Americans with Disabilities Act, which has an impact on the potential cost, Van

Cura said.

“We’d like to move there, but it has to be cost-effective,” he said.

The property also needs a zoning variation for Catholic Charities to move in.

The old chancery building actually is on a lot that was never changed from

residential zoning when it was built, said Kendall Jackson, community development director for Joliet.

The Joliet Zoning Board of Appeals will consider the variation when it meet at 2 p.m. Jan. 19.

“In order to contain the offices, they have to get the variation,” Jackson said.

Van Cura said he plans to attend the zoning board meeting.

So does Georgene Williams, a member of the St. John’s Neighborhood Association that has been concerned about potential uses of the property.

Williams was among association members who opposed a previous plan by the diocese to use the building at 430 N. Center St. for a recovery program for ex-convicts.

Williams said she did not have any immediate objections to the plan for Head Start offices in the chancery building.

“If it’s an office only, I don’t see anything wrong with offices,” Williams said.

But she said neighbors do want to learn more about the investors’ plans for the two other buildings, which include the one-time bishop’s house on Bridge Street. Williams said the new property owners are expected to come to the next St. John’s Neighborhood Association meeting, which also will Jan. 19 but at 6:30 p.m. at St. John’s Church.

Head Start administrative offices currently are in a downtown building that has been sold, Van Cura said.

Other Catholic Charities already have been moved to the diocese campus in Crest Hill.

Tom was a recipient of a liver transplant as an infant and he lived his life ever grateful for his donor family. Ricardo “Rick” A. Calderon, age 23, of Shorewood, passed away suddenly, Saturday, January 7, 2017 from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident.

Born September 27, 1993 in Aurora, he attended Walnut Trails Grade School, Minooka Junior High School, and was a graduate of Minooka High School, where he was a member of the football team. He was employed by Jewel-Osco in Shorewood.

Rick was an exceptional young man who understood and actively pursued what he wanted out of life. He was compassionate, thoughtful, and had a big heart influenced in no small way by the relationship he had with God. A beautiful man both inside and out, he was fiercely protective of his family and a loyal and devoted friend to many.

Rick could also be the life of the party and his outgoing personality, sense of humor, and love of laughter are cherished qualities. He will be remembered for his dance moves, love of cars, football, and a good cigar.

Rauner believes the state’s businesses are overburdened by restrictive laws and union requirements, that voters have lost faith because of political scandal and that property taxes are choking homeowners. Since his inauguration in January 2015, he has insisted that a budget agreement – and the income-tax hike likely necessary to fund state services – be accompanied by restrictions on workers’ compensation, union power, term limits for politicians and a fairer way of drawing legislative districts.

New names on the legislative roll call alone will mean little change. Democrats lost four seats and their veto-proof supermajority in the House. But that supermajority was fickle because of moderate party members who couldn’t always vote in lockstep.

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois’ financial crisis is being handed off from one set of lawmakers to another this week – a problem that, at 18 months, is the nation’s longest-running budget stalemate.

The key players: The conservative businessman-turned-governor Bruce Rauner and Michael Madigan, the oldschool Democratic House speaker whose decades at the helm has made him a Capitol institution.

The General Assembly being sworn in Wednesday is the 100th, a historic one marking the Prairie State’s 2018 bicentennial. It has a steep climb ahead, although the Senate broke away this week with its own proposed solution to pulling the state out of billions of dollars of debt, restoring for thousands of vendors the ability to make payroll and returning social service programs to more than a million people.

But Rauner and Madigan remain so entrenched in their positions and some think the matter will not be resolved before the 2018 election, when voters have another crack at naming the governor.

Here’s a look at the beginning of the debacle and what might happen next:

NATION & WORLD BRIEFS Ryan: GOP looks to repeal, the Senate’s second hearing in a week addressing allegations of replace health care law WASHINGTON – Republicans will work to unravel and replace the health care law, House Speaker Paul Ryan said Tuesday as GOP leaders struggled to align their zeal to rapidly erase one of President Barack Obama’s proudest achievements with Congress’ legislative and political pitfalls.

Ryan, R-Wis., spoke to reporters amid growing concern among Republican lawmakers about erasing Obama’s overhaul – which expanded coverage to 20 million people – without having an alternative to show voters.

Republicans have been divided for years over how to replace the statute, and the process of crafting replacement legislation they can unify behind is likely to take months or longer.

“We will pass as much as we can” initially, Ryan said. He said Republicans would then produce a second bill to “show you the full scope of what a real replacement effort looks like.”

Attorney general pick says he’d defy Trump if needed

WASHINGTON – Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions fervently rejected “damnably false” accusations of past racist comments Tuesday as he challenged Democratic concerns about the civil rights commitment he would bring as Donald Trump’s attorney general. He vowed at his confirmation hearing to stay independent from the White House and stand up to Trump when necessary.

Sessions laid out a sharply conservative vision for the Justice Department he would oversee, pledging to crack down on illegal immigration, gun violence and the “scourge of radical Islamic terrorism” and to keep open the Guantanamo Bay prison in Cuba.

But he also distanced himself from some of Trump’s public pronouncements.

He said waterboarding, a now-banned harsh interrogation technique that Trump has at times expressed support for, was “absolutely improper and illegal.”

Though he said he would prosecute immigrants who repeatedly enter the country illegally and criticized as constitutionally “questionable” an executive action by President Barack Obama that shielded certain immigrants from deportation, he said he did “not support the idea that Muslims, as a religious group, should be denied admission to the United States.”

Trump earlier in his campaign called for a temporary total ban on Muslims entering

his country but has more recently proposed “extreme vetting.”

Sessions asserted that he could confront Trump if needed, saying an attorney general must be prepared to resign if asked to do something “unlawful or unconstitutional.”

Nothing new came out of the hearing that seemed likely to threaten Sessions’ confirmation by the Republican Senate.

Yet as he outlined his priorities, his past – including a 1986 judicial nomination that failed amid allegations that he’d made racially charged comments – hovered over the proceedings. Protesters calling Sessions a racist repeatedly interrupted and were hustled out

by Capitol police.

Sessions vigorously denied that he had ever called the NAACP “un-American.” He said he had never harbored racial animus, calling the allegations – which included that he had referred to a black attorney in his office as “boy” – part of a false caricature.

“It wasn’t accurate then,” Sessions said. “It isn’t accurate now.”

He said he “understands the history of civil rights and the horrendous impact that relentless and systemic discrimination and the denial of voting rights has had on our African-American brothers and sisters. I have witnessed it.”

“I know we need to do better. We can never go back,” Sessions said. “I am totally committed to maintaining the freedom and equality that this country has to provide to every citizen.”

Forfeiture is basically a gov’t money grab SPRINGFIELD – Henry County, a rural piece of western Illinois sliced by two interstates and the home of the “Hog Capital of the World,” is hardly the place you would expect important constitutional issues to be argued, but it is.

Larry Vandersnick, a Republican former judge and prosecutor, developed misgivings about a common government tactic, civil forfeiture, which allows government to seize property from individuals even when they have never been convicted of a crime.

From his office in Cambridge, a picturesque town of 2,100, he became a soldier in a battle that is being fought in Washington, Springfield and county seats across the nation.

“I guess I’ve seen the light on part of the war on drugs,” he said. “Laws like these were passed in the early 1990s all across the country as part of it, but civil forfeiture has become a lot more common in the last 10 years. And it is hurting innocent people.”

Civil forfeiture is basically a money grab by government.

And instead of just nabbing yachts from drug lords, it has caught plenty of ordinary people in its net as well.

Last year, Vandersnick read in the The Dispatch and Rock Island Argus about Judy Wiese, a 70-year-old housekeeper who lost her car.

She lent her 2009 Jeep Compass to a grandson so he could drive to work.

The car was seized by police because the grandson’s driver’s license was revoked.

Wiese told the newspaper that her grandson had told her otherwise. Judy was just a grandma helping out a grandson. She hadn’t broken any laws.

Vandersnick donated his legal services and got the car back for her, but most folks aren’t so fortunate.

“This is about money.

Since 2005, Illinois has pocketed more than $319 million from private citizens throughout the state. Federal law enforcement took in more than $404 million in Illinois over the same time period,” Hilary Gowins, of the Illinois Policy Institute, told me.

The institute, along with the American Civil Liberties Union, is leading the charge to reform civil asset forfeiture laws in Illinois.

In a cash-strapped state like Illinois it will be an uphill slog.

But justice is priceless. And other states have seen the light.

New Mexico, Nebraska and North Carolina allow asset forfeiture only when a person has been convicted of a crime.

And California recently passed a law banning forfeiture in most cases unless a conviction has been made.

Illinois should do the same.

No one should have what they own taken from them unless they have been found guilty.

And we should expect our police to defend the private property of Illinois residents – not take it away.

That may be common sense, but it’s not the law.

Commenters blend fact, fiction There’s a section in the nearly 600-page 2016 edition of the Associated Press Stylebook – a journalist’s bible to all things writing and reporting – that warns against mistaking the internet for an encyclopedia. The excerpt reads: “The internet is a sprawling information repository. Anything you find should be assessed and vetted with the same care that you use for everything else. ... Be especially careful about websites and social networks that allow anyone to contribute text, photos and other information.”

We encourage – better yet, challenge – you to employ the same pause in thinking in your daily life.

In the world of social media and online commenting, fiction and fact often are blended, gener-

ating a fast-moving flow of news that works like the age-old game of “telephone” on a much larger level.

In news stories, we do our best to deal in facts by verifying information with highly reliable sources.

If it doesn’t come on the record from a trusted source, it isn’t reported. In crime, there are police and prosecutors who provide information.

There are arrests and charges filed. Court documents are public record and citable forms of information. In government, there are city officials, public documents and meetings from which we routinely generate stories.

Often we report on fluid situations where the story changes or develops on a day-to-day or even hour-tohour basis. As we confirm information in those cases,

we report it. We post these stories to our website and then share them to social media to get the confirmed information out.

In recent weeks, though, we’ve been troubled by the unconfirmed and even wild accusations that have made it back to us in the form of online comments to these stories.

These often baseless claims are harmful. They are so often not factual and yet are spread to others by those who read them as in a game of “telephone.”

By the end of the line, who knows what’s true and what’s not?

In a time where nearly everyone has a social media voice, it’s up to you what kind of information you want to spread.

And to those reading social media for updates, please heed the Associated Press’ advice.

cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A good example of why Joliet Central’s boys basketball team is enjoying a successful season thus far can be seen from a quick glance at Tuesday’s score book.

In their Southwest Prairie Conference game against Plainfield East, the Steelmen’s first two points were free throws from Jose Grubbs, who had seven rebounds but failed to make any baskets and didn’t score again after that.

But despite that rough night for its scoring leader, Central grabbed the early lead and was in control throughout and went on to claim a 60-39 win over the Bengals at Steelmen Gym. Ten other players scored as coach Lawrence Thompson Jr.’s Steelmen improved to 14-1 overall and 6-0 in the SPC after posting their 11th consecutive victory.

“We know that coach (Branden) Adkins does a great job and that even though he was down his best player, their kids play hard and we knew that it was going to be a fast-paced game,” Thompson said. “So it was good that all of our guys were ready to go and do the best that they could and it was great for all of the kids to get in. It was a good team win today.

“I try to get the kids to understand how important it is to be prepared to start a game. I didn’t know if we’d be ready to go since school just got back in a couple of days ago and sometimes the routine gets out of whack. All of our guys are confident offensively and practice hard against each other. So

“Everybody has each other’s back and no one’s selfish,” Hornsby said.

“We’re all a team and in practice we go hard at each other and make each other work so in games it comes easy. If somebody’s off like Jose was, we pick them up. This shows what we’ve got coming off of the bench. Everybody on

our bench has the ability to score, get rebounds and play defense.

“We take pride in our defense and we put that first before offense. We’re a family and we see each other as brothers, no more or no less. However we end, we did it together.”

Bell delighted the crowd with a behind-the-head dunk and Smith hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer “Mike [Smith] did a great job for us tonight,” West coach Nick DiForti said. “He provided that spark we needed and we actually practice taking

buzzer-beater shots in practice from anywhere on the floor.

“It was a sloppy win tonight, but, not to make excuses, we rarely play on Tuesdays, especially a conference game and we just got back to school.

We started playing better defense and that helped our offense as it does with this team. It was also good to see us get right into our offense coming out of out-of-bounds plays. That has been a struggle for us at times this season.”

Eddie Creal added 12 points for the Tigers and had three of his patented two-handed dunks. He also added five rebounds. Elijah Ward grabbed six boards and had three steals.

Despite missing Collin Reed to a hand injury, Bengals coach Branden Adkins saw several positives from his young team.

“We stuck to the game plan and

defended better than we had in most games,” Adkins said. “We went away from it when we kind of stopped attacking the basket and settled for some jump shots. They’re a really good defensive team and they make you panic a little bit and we did that in a couple of situations and they capitalized. But I liked the way that we started pushing the ball in transition and looking to attack.”

JOLIET – After a sluggish start, the Joliet West boys basketball team beat Southwest Prairie Conference foe Oswego East, 68-49, on Tuesday night.

West (15-1, 6-0) came into the game atop the conference and East (10-5, 4-2) was third, with its only conference loss to Joliet Central last Friday.

Leading only 11-10 after the first quarter, the Tigers fell behind the Wolves, 15-13, with 7:01 left in the half and trailed, 21-19, with 4:26 remaining in the half, but that would be the last time East would lead.

The Tigers came alive and went on a 12-2 run to end the first half ahead, 31-23.

The spark that got West going was Mike Smith’s performance off the bench. Smith scored nine of his gamehigh 20 points in the second quarter and hit the Tigers’ first 3-pointer of the game with 4 seconds left in the half.

“I like coming off the bench,” Smith said. “I like to come in and try and give us that spark, get us going at times.

Most teams don’t think I can do much because I don’t start.

“We had those runs because of our defense. We weren’t hitting shots early, but we didn’t have that defensive mindset and that what really helps our offense. My teammates found me tonight when I was open and I hit those shots. It was different playing on a Tuesday night.”

dgoss@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Joliet Catholic Academy boys basketball team had a dual purpose entering Tuesday night’s nonconference game against Manteno.

Get another victory, and prepare for Thursday night’s trip to Niles to face highly regarded East Suburban Catholic Conference foe Notre Dame.

For a half, things were a bit iffy as Manteno held its own against the redhot Hilltoppers. But coach Joe Gura’s team turned up the defense in the third quarter, which created an offensive explosion and a 55-31 victory.

“Coach challenged me to be more aggressive and attack the hoop,” senior guard Jack Surin said of a third quarter, where he scored on three drives to the basket and a 3-pointer. “I the first quarter and part of the second quarter, I was passive. In the second half, we answered the challenge. We scored off our defense.”

The Hilltoppers (9-7), who have won six of their last seven, led at the half, 2417, after breaking away from a 7-7 tie with 2:18 left in the first quarter.

JCA senior forward Pete Ragen knocked down a 3-pointer to open the third quarter and ignite 14-0 run that included Surin’s three driving layups.

When Surin and senior guard Brendon Wills nailed 3-pointers as the third quarter wound down, JCA enjoyed a comfortable 46-26 lead.

“They were trying to take away everything we were doing. It was our defense that kept us in the game in the first half, and our defense that turned the game around in the second half.

“We came out in the third quarter with a fire. I like the way we responded in the second half. It doesn’t matter who we play, we have to play defense. We’re not the most skilled offensive team, but we’ve gotten some big wins because we have played defense and stuck with it.”

Wills hit 3 of 5 shots from 3-point range and finished with a team-high 15 points. Ragen chipped in 13 and Surin 11.

“He’s did a great job,” Surin said of Wills. “He’s very valuable to our team.”

The Hilltoppers hit 8 of 11 shots in the decisive third quarter and 21 of 41 overall for 51.2 percent. They also held a 28-19 rebounding edge as Surin grabbed seven, Donavan Finch six and Ragen five.

“I had a couple other games where I shot it pretty well, but I got on a good roll tonight,” said Wills, who shares a guard spot with Dexter Spencer, with either the potential starter on a give night. “I just go with what’s going good.

“It really doesn’t matter whether I start or come off the bench, and I’m sure Dexter would have the same answer. We just have to be who we are when we get in the game and play with confidence.”

Wills said this is a good time for JCA to face the challenge of playing at Notre Dame.

“We’re hot now,” he said. “We’re playing some of the best basketball we have played all year, so this is a good time to get them.”

“Notre Dame is always a tough game,” Surin said. “We have to go up there with the approach that we are going to take the game to them.”

Surin said he liked having a nonconference Tuesday game two days before traveling to Niles.

“It was nice to come out and get the reps Tuesday, especially for the bench guys,” he said.

Gura said that while Notre Dame is a tough assignment, so is everyone the Hilltoppers have remaining on the East Suburban Catholic portion of the schedule.

“Every conference game, our opponent has a tremendous record and has beaten somebody good,” he said. “It doesn’t matter who we play, though, we have to play defense if we’re going to give ourselves a chance to win.”

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – John Wall scored 26 points, including a game-winning baseline jumper with 5.9 seconds left, and added 14 assists as the Washington Wizards moved above .500 with a 101-99 victory over the Bulls on Tuesday night.

Marcin Gortat had 10 points and 12 rebounds for Washington (19-18). He also set the screen that freed up Wall for his tiebreaking jumper to seal a 10th straight home win.

Markieff Morris and Bradley Beal each added 19 points for the Wizards, who completed their biggest comeback victory of the season after trailing by 18 in the second quarter.

Washington is above .500 for the first time in more than a year. A season ago, the Wizards were 6-5 after a victory on Nov. 24, 2015.

Denzel Valentine set career highs by scoring 19 points and making five

Rondo returns: Before the game, Rondo said he was told by a member of the Bulls coaching staff that coach Fred Hoiberg was “saving me from myself” by benching the four-time AllStar for the past five games.

LOS ANGELES – The rosters for the NHL All-Star Game are brimming with top-shelf talent.

Rookies Auston Matthews and Patrik Laine were among the 40 players selected Tuesday for the NHL’s 62nd midseason showcase at Staples Center.

The Blackhawks led the league with four players selected for the All-Star weekend, which will be held Jan. 27-29 in Los Angeles.

Goalie Corey Crawford, defenseman Duncan Keith and forwards Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews will represent the Hawks.

The game format will again be a 3-on-3 tournament featuring a team from each of the NHL’s four divisions.

The players also will compete in a skills competition on Jan. 28.

The Pacific Division won the tournament last year.

The fans’ eminently logical choices for captains this time around were Pittsburgh’s Sidney Crosby, Edmonton’s Connor McDavid, Nashville’s P.K. Subban – who has been out with an injury since Dec. 15 – and Montreal goalie Carey Price.

Knicks fine Rose for missing game; he cites family reasons

NEW YORK – Derrick Rose has returned to practice with the New York Knicks after missing their game the night before for what he described as family reasons.

The Knicks’ public relations department posted a photo on Twitter on Tuesday that showed Rose in his No. 25 practice jersey, standing with his teammates at their training facility in Greenburgh, New York.

The team later announced he had been fined for missing the 110-96 loss to New Orleans on Monday and said he was expected to be in uniform Wednesday night in Philadelphia.

Rose told reporters he had returned to Chicago for family reasons and that his absence had nothing to do with basketball. He said he apologized to his teammates and Knicks management, telling them it wouldn’t happen again.

On Monday, Rose worked out with the Knicks at their morning shootaround, but they announced as the game was starting that he was not with the team.

Center Joakim Noah said he spoke to Rose after the game and that he was OK.

CHICAGO – Duncan Keith scored a power-play goal 38 seconds into overtime, lifting the Blackhawks to a 4-3 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday night for the Hawks’ fourth straight victory.

Keith, who also had an assist, beat Petr Mrazek with a rising screened shot from the top of the slot.

The man advantage was set up when Justin Adbelkader was called for boarding the Hawks’ Niklas Hjalmarsson with 15.2 seconds left in the third.

Richard Panik also had a goal and assist for the Hawks, while Brian Campbell and Tanner Kero each scored.

Ryan Hartman added two assists. Corey Crawford stopped 33 shots.

Andreas Athanasiou, Tomas Tatar and Luke Glendening had Detroit’s goals in regulation.

Mrazek had 39 saves as the Red Wings fell to 2-2-2 on a season-high seven-game road trip.

Watson leaves Clemson on solid ground

The Associated Press TAMPA, Fla. – Standing on college football’s biggest stage and hoisting its top prize, Clemson coach Dabo Swinney and dynamic quarterback Deshaun Watson shared the ultimate hug and a few private words.

A formidable pairing. An improbable championship. An ideal ending.

Swinney and Watson’s finale together, a 35-31 upset victory against Alabama in the national title game Monday night, might just be a launching point for the Tigers (14-1).

“You think this is the best of Clemson? Just wait the next five years,” Watson said Tuesday. “It’s going to be even more exciting, more awesome.”

The Tigers claimed their first national championship since 1981, ending a 35-year drought thanks to huge plays from Watson, his receiving corps and a defense determined to avenge last year’s oh-so-close loss to the Crimson Tide in the title game.

Although most expect Clemson to need a year or two to reload – the Tigers are losing a handful of offensive and defensive stars – Swinney believes his team will get another title shot in the not-too-distant future, certainly not another three-decade wait.

“There’s no doubt in my mind that the best is yet to come for us,” Swinney said. “I mean, we’re going to continue to improve, continue to get better.

Winning national championships are hard. I mean, it’s very, very difficult to do. It’s been 35 years at Clemson. ... It won’t be 35 years before Clemson will do this again.

“God willing, I’ll be a part of it. But this program is built to last.”

It’s certainly being built to compete with anyone in the country.

Swinney has five-star quarterback Hunter Johnson, from Brownsburg, Indiana, on the way to replace Watson, who graduated in three years and is leaving early for the NFL draft. And Clemson annually has one of the top three recruiting classes in the Atlantic Coast Conference, right on the heels of Florida State, as well as perennial powers Alabama, Ohio State, Oklahoma and Michigan.

Equally promising, the Tigers are getting ready to open a $55 million football complex that will be attached to the team’s indoor practice facility.

The complex will have all the usual amenities, like a weight room, a dining hall, meeting rooms and offices, but it also boasts a players’ lounge that features table tennis, pool tables, miniature golf, a golf simulator, laser tag, a bowling alley, sand volleyball courts and a 24-seat high-definition theater.

Edwards has given no indication what he’s thinking or what the future may hold. In a text message to The Associated Press, he wrote: “I’m kinda hungry. Going to Subway!” In reference to his longtime sponsor. He also stated simply: “All good.”

Neither Fox Sports or NBC Sports have roles planned for Edwards in 2017, although he has done analyst work on a semi-regular basis the last several years.

Edwards came oh-so-close to winning his first Cup championship in November’s season finale. He was leading all championship contenders with 10 laps remaining at Homestead-Miami Speedway until a caution set up a restart that bunched the field. Edwards tried to block Joey Logano’s attempt to take the lead, and it caused a crash that ended Edwards’ title bid.

The class and dignity in which Edwards showed after the accident – he walked from his wrecked car to the pit box for Logano and wished that team luck in the closing laps – was

widely lauded. He also came close to a title in 2011, finishing second to Stewart in a tiebreaker.

Edwards, who is extremely private, has two young children that he steadfastly refuses to discuss in interviews. He lives in his home state of Missouri, while most of NASCAR’s drivers live in North Carolina.

Edwards won three races in 2016 as JGR dominated the regular season and put two drivers in the final four. He spent 13 years in the Cup Series and has 28 career victories in 445 starts.

His backstory has always been one of local-driver-makes-it-big. He was a substitute teacher who handed out business cards at race tracks trying to get a shot at a NASCAR job. He landed one with Jack Roush and won the 2007 Xfinity Series title. Edwards was also the top rookie in 2003 in the truck series and 2005 in Xfinity.

Suarez, from Mexico, became the first foreign-born driver to win a NASCAR national series when he earned the Xfinity title last season. He will join Kyle Larson as the only two drivers from NASCAR’s diversity program to race at the top level.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – In a stunning decision, NASCAR driver Carl Edwards is walking away from the final year of his contract with Joe Gibbs Racing less than two months after nearly winning his first Cup championship, two people with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

Joe Gibbs Racing scheduled a pair of news conferences Wednesday in which Edwards is expected to announce he will not drive the No. 19 Toyota next season. The second announcement is that reigning Xfinity Series champion Daniel Suarez will replace Edwards in the Cup Series.

The two people spoke to AP on the condition of anonymity because the team and Edwards had not announced the move.

The 37-year-old Edwards informed team owner Joe Gibbs right before Christmas that he no longer wanted to compete, the people told the AP, confirming a decision first reported

by Fox Sports.

“This is comparable to Barry Sand-

ers’ retirement back in 1999, shocking and with loads of ability and time left in a very successful career,” Texas Motor Speedway President Eddie Gossage said. Edwards was a four-time winner at Texas in the Cup Series.

“I talked to Carl about a month ago and he didn’t give any indiCarl Edwards cation that he was considering this,” Gossage said. “It is a shock that just doesn’t seem real.”

Edwards may not be done for good: He could simply be sitting out one year of competition for a myriad reasons, and there could be jobs waiting for him in 2018. Tony Stewart has retired and has a four-car lineup that is moving this year to Ford, where Edwards was closely aligned before he spent the last two seasons driving for Gibbs.

Also, concerns about Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s concussion history, plus underperformance by Kasey Kahne, could open seats in the future at Hendrick Motorsports. Edwards, who is married to a doctor who specializes

Jerrie’s Dogs & Fries sticks to the basics MYSTERY DINER JOLIET – I like a good hot dog. Seriously.

So when I learned that the new hot dog venue in town – Jerrie’s Dogs & Fries – was named for the owner’s mother, who also loved a good hot dog, – well, I had to try it.

Now, if you’re looking for an elaborate menu, you won’t find it inside this small venue, which sticks to the basics. Jerrie’s Dogs & Fries had just four entrées: hot dogs, tamales, Polish sausage and fried bologna sandwiches.

Fried bologna sandwiches?

If you grew up in the ’60s or ’70s, you’ll know. And if you didn’t, it’s as it sounds, garnished with lettuce, tomato and pickle, and tucked between two slices of white or wheat bread or toasted.

Sides include fries, onion rings, tater tots, tater tot boat (chili, cheese and onion), two pretzel sticks with cheese, a cup of cheese or a cup of soup – like stuffed green pepper soup – which changes daily.

By the way, if you like SALTY fries (as I do ), these are for you. My friend and I split a large order – to save room for more hot dogs, the main attraction for my friend and me.

What to choose?

Well, the signature Jerrie Dog, of course. These are served with mustard, relish, onion, pickle, sport peppers, tomato, cucumbers and celery salt – although the customer is free to modify at will.

Speaking of customers, they came and went at a steady pace, all orders to go. We opted for the full effect and sat at the tiny counter.

I confess, I did modify my dog. I passed on relish, peppers

and celery salt. My friend went for the full effect – and a chili dog to accompany it. My friend pronounced the Jerrie Dog “a perfect Chicago-style hot dog, full of flavor, all the way down to the celery salt” or as this person added another way: “A bit of Chicago right in Joliet.”

And the chili dog? “Bold and full of flavor.”

That was hot dogs one, two and three.

We passed on Polish sausage in favor of splitting a fourth dog. The Essington dog (chili and cheese)? The J Town (mustard and kraut, tempting) or the corn dog?

Nope, we ordered a deepfried hot dog. We agreed it was fun to try but didn’t notice a taste difference from the other dogs.

No dessert on the menu (at least the day we ate there).

I feel chocolate chip cookies would sell well, but that’s me.

In short, this isn’t the venue for the serious dieter or the health conscious. Unless you’re willing to abandon those sentiments for one delicious meal. We did. We’re not sorry.

That benefit might come from the creation of greater amounts of brain reserve, so when brain function decreases years in the future, the effect may not be as obvious.

My belief is any form of education is important. Although the study above showed an additional one year of education had benefit, there are other ways of getting an education, such as learning a language.

Numerous studies have shown people who are proficient in two languages have a significant decline in dementia. So if you have the time, learning another language would be a worthy investment.

Please note, however, I have had patients with high education levels get dementia, so education is not a total preventive.

But I would encourage you to continue to use your mind – challenging yourself with learning new material and continuing to educate yourself. You don’t need to sit in a class for this. A lifelong process of learning and understanding may itself decrease your chances of dementia.

Dear Doctor: I read dementia rates are going down due to rising education levels, but I don’t have a college degree. Should I be more worried than most?

Dear Reader: Dementia is a scary disease, causing not only loss of memory but also the inability to reason through problems and, for many, difficulty with even the daily tasks of living. One bright spot is dementia rates indeed are declining. This first was noted in the United Kingdom in 2013, where researchers in the medical journal Lancet reported a 24 percent decline in dementia rates compared with 20 years previous. The question is: Why the decrease?

A recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association attempts to answer that question, assessing differences in dementia rates in the United States between the years of 2000 and 2012.

The data were taken from the Health and Retirement Study, which is based on a questionnaire given to thousands of people older than 50. The study looked at 10,000 people in 2000 and another 10,000 people in 2012. In this study, researchers found a 24 percent decrease in the dementia rate between 2000 and 2012, and one difference noted by the authors of the study was overall respondents in 2012 had one more year of education than those in 2000.

A logical question is whether the population in 2012 simply was healthier. That does not appear to be the case. In fact, the 2012 population generally had greater rates of high blood pressure and diabetes, both of which are risk factors for dementia. To that point, it’s possible the more modern and stricter treatments for diabetes and high blood pressure played a role. After all, statins, as well as medications for high blood pressure and diabetes, can reduce the

The result was a contract of three no-trump by South. (If North had opened with a strong no-trump, that might have ended the auction.

Inviting game with that South hand would not have been clear-cut, although feasible because of the good spot-cards.)

West led the diamond four, second-highest from a weak suit. East won with his ace and returned the diamond jack.

Gahan had six top tricks: two spades, one heart, two diamonds and one club. Naturally, she led a club to dummy’s jack at trick three. If East had ducked, probably declarer would have played the ace and another club. East, though, took the trick and led his last diamond.

Now South had to avoid letting West win a trick and cash his diamond nine. She ran the heart nine, which East took with his king, hoping his partner had the queen-eight left as a guaranteed entry.

East exited with a low spade.

South misjudged by playing her jack, but she took West’s queen with dummy’s ace, cashed her clubs, then ran the heart 10 to East’s jack. When the suit split 3-3, the contract was home.
