Joliet Park District Board April 4 election gets attention

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Joliet Park District board election has attracted an interesting assortment of candidates.

The ballot includes: • the widow of former park board President Glen Marcum, who died last year; • a Joliet police detective; • a Joliet firefighter who is the son of the former county circuit clerk; • a retired Joliet firefighter and former park commissioner; • and more.

Not running in the April 4 election are two incumbents: Art Schultz Jr. and Tim Broderick.

New Board President Sue Gulas is running for a second term.

Noting she was on the board when voters approved a $19.5 million referendum for park improvements, Gulas said, “I want to stay on the board another term to see all that through.”

Gulas is among six candidates seeking three four-year terms on the board.

McGuire said he learned a lot about what people want while working for the park district for 11 years.

“I heard a lot of their concerns,” he said.

“There’s a lot of knowledge that comes through the doors there.”

Other candidates for the three four-year terms are: • Joliet police Detective Joe Clement, who has been the detective working out of the mayor’s office for the last three mayors; • Jim Patnoudes, an employee of the Forest Preserve District of Will County and former aircraft mechanic with the U.S. Navy; • Kevin Paul, a sales representative for Kimball Midwest who coaches soccer at the park district; • David Talarico, a Troy District 30-C school board member whose name may be familiar to voters from the November election, when he made an unsuccessful bid for Will County Board; • Bill Tatro, a retired Joliet firefighter who later served on the city’s Fire and Police Commission and who also is a former park district commissioner.

Joliet man faces felony charges in Chicago airport security breach The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – Police say a man accused of breaching security at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport faces felony charges.

Chicago police said Monday that 21-year-old Malik Steffon Neal, of Joliet, is charged with three aggravated battery felonies, among other counts. Malik He was due in bond court Steffon Neal Monday.

No other incumbents are running, but Patricia Marcum, the widow of Glen Marcum, who died in November, is in the campaign.

She is running against Matthew McGuire for the seat vacated by her husband’s death in a separate two-person race for a two-year term.

Marcum, too, mentioned the $19.5 million referendum, saying her husband had a vision for how the money should be spent.

“I just want to make sure that the money that the voters gave to the park district is spent responsibly and spent equitably through the whole park district,” Marcum said.

Like Marcum, McGuire has a name well known to voters. He is the son of Pam McGuire, the longtime clerk of the Will County circuit court, who did not run for re-election last year.

McGuire also is a Joliet firefighter, who in December resigned a part-time park district job as assistant manager at the Inwood Golf Course so he could run for park board.

letic facility. According to police reports, Neal approached employees at the desk to ask about getting a massage then was seen going through lockers in the men’s locker room. When Neal was told he had to leave Inwood, he threatened to come back with a gun.

Six days later, Neal was arrested for disorderly conduct again after he allegedly approached a woman in a workout area at the University of St. Francis and made unwanted sexual references, according to police reports.

STATE-OF-THE-ART FACILITY JJC students, staff begin using long-awaited building

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet Junior College’s City Center Campus saw its first student stroll through its doors for classes Monday.

It still was dark out Monday morning, but culinary student Susan Quigley came in and was greeted by college officials, including JJC President Judy Mitchell. Quigley, as one of the first 25 students to enter, was given a welcome bag of goodies.

Quigley said it was her first time inside the college’s new building in downtown Joliet.

“I’m just very excited,” she said.

Monday was the first day of classes but also the first day for a building that’s been long in development for JJC. The college had a groundbreaking ceremony on the six-story, 96,000-squarefoot building at the corner of Chicago and Webster streets in 2013.

“It’s incredible. This is literally one of the top facilities in the world.”

JJC culinary arts chairman in an email that JJC expects 400 students using the building this semester, with room to grow in the future.

The building is the new home for the college’s culinary arts program, workforce development, and department of adult education and literacy.

The six levels include administrative offices; a restaurant; culinary arts classroom space; a ballroom and kitchen; a student lounge; classrooms and labs; a library; and a testing and tutoring area.

“It’s incredible,” said Mike McGreal, JJC culinary arts chairman. “This is literally one of the top facilities in the world.”

McGreal was with other college officials Monday, greeting the first 25 students who came to the building.

“Are you ready to see the new digs?” he asked one student.

Residents battling proposed CSX intermodal

mmallory@shawmedia.com Crete Township residents are taking a stand against a proposed intermodal terminal they say is a threat to the rural community of Goodenow and other homes and schools, as well as overall public safety, in the Crete Township area.

Township residents nearly filled the Will County Board room last week as the board’s Executive Committee discussed a possible sponsorship of a grant request by CSX Transportation that would provide CSX with funds to build a grade separation at Crete-Monee Road.

The grant would come from the Illinois Commerce Commission’s Grade Crossing Protection Fund, which aims to improve railroad crossing safety. The grant request requires a unit of government to sponsor it, but the project itself would use no county funds.

Many residents were given the opportunity to speak on the matter.

Threats to the community listed by residents, if the intermodal were to become a reality, included air, noise and water pollution; diminishing property values; loss of small businesses; and the safety of children at nearby Balmoral Elementary School.

doesn’t have the infrastructure to handle the project. The intermodal itself would be within the village of Crete, but it would also greatly impact township residents, they said, with no clear benefit to them.

County Board Speaker Jim Moustis, R-Frankfort, cautioned that the likelihood of CSX even receiving the grant is low, but he did say that the grade separation would make it safer in the area, if the intermodal were to be built.

But residents see the grant as the first step for the project to continue.

CSX Regional Vice President of Midwest Government Affairs Tom Livingston said whether the state approves the grant would not determine whether the project goes forward. He added the terminal has not yet been designed and CSX is “still kicking the tires” on it.

The proposed grade separation project – including engineering, right-ofway and construction – is estimated to cost as much as $17 million or as little as $10 million, according to county documents. CSX would provide the local financial match – 40 percent of the total project cost – at up to $6.8 million for a $17 million project.

The grant application deadline is Jan. 15, so the board is holding a special meeting Thursday after the forest preserve board meeting to vote.

Moustis also said that in Illinois, municipalities have a lot more authority than the county.

“Most of the issues you may have with this particular development as it goes forward are with the village of Crete,” Moustis said to the residents.

Laraway Communications Center taking shape in Will County

Dispatch services likely to be consolidated into new sheriff’s office building

mmallory@shawmedia.com JOLIET – It appears municipalities countywide are on board for Will County’s plan to consolidate emergency dispatch services at the new Will County Public Safety Complex.

Nick Palmer, chief of staff for Will County Executive Larry Walsh Sr., said Thursday during the Will County Board’s Executive Committee meeting that the county will be able to negotiate a lease agreement with what would be referred to as the Laraway Communications Center. The

center will be the legal entity representing various municipalities in the dispatch center.

As part of the estimated $30 million Will County Public Safety Complex, which will be home to the sheriff’s office and all its operations, Will County’s 911 board in April drafted a consolidation plan for reducing its emergency dispatch centers from six to three, in accordance with an unfunded state mandate.

Under the plan, dispatch centers in Romeoville, Crete and Frankfort would be folded into the new complex with the Will County Sheriff’s Office.

The two other operating dispatch centers in the county are the city of Joliet’s facility and WESCOM’s Plainfield facility, built in 2014.

Each agency, as part of the Laraway Communications Center, will give a 10 percent startup contribution to the agency’s share of the initial budget for the initial year of operation by Jan. 31. The startup fee will be considered part of the first year’s budget for each agency, according to county documents.

Each agency will be responsible for the costs of the acquisition, installation and maintenance of equipment

that is unique to that agency and not a benefit to the center as a whole. This includes, but is not limited to, squad car and fire equipment, radios and pagers.

There is a minimum two-year signup for agencies in the Laraway Communications Center.

There was some question in the fall, from the county’s perspective, whether all eligible agencies were going to join the center.

The Executive Committee is anticipated to approve an intergovernmental agreement Thursday, in order for the county to start lease negotiations.

Unrelated case resolved for murder suspect

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Lockport man facing murder charges for a 2015 shooting in Joliet will serve prison time for a separate gun conviction.

Judge Dave Carlson on Monday found Lonnie M. Pinnick, 26, guilty of being an armed habitual criminal and will sentence him next month to serve six to 30 years in prison. Carlson heard the case as a stipulated

bench trial – essentially a guilty plea that can still be challenged in an appellate court.

Two arrested following Joliet 7-Eleven robbery

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Two men were arrested early Monday after allegedly robbing a convenience store in Joliet.

Deputy Chief Ed Gregory said an alarm at 12:50 a.m. brought officers to 7-Eleven, 1601 E. Cass St. Two clerks, a 56-year-old woman and a 27-yearold man, told police they’d just been robbed by two men at gunpoint. According to the victims, one of the robbers, a man wearing a brown hooded sweatshirt, had shown them a silver revolver, while his partner, who was wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt, was carrying a black gun, Gregory said.

“As other officers arrived they saw a man wearing a brown hooded sweatshirt running [along] Briggs Street. After a short foot chase, he was detained in the 300 block of Briggs and officers found a silver re-

volver, black BB gun, cash and bottle of Crown Royal that had been taken from the store nearby,” Gregory said.

The suspect was later identified as Trennis D. Jones, 41, of the 800 block of Ewing Avenue in Joliet.

A short time later, Trennis other police found a D. Jones man in a blue sweatshirt, Donald C. Waddell Jr., 25, of the 1100 block of Magnolia Avenue in Joliet, in the area. The victims identified Jones and Waddell as the robbers, Donald C. Gregory said.

Five days earlier, Pinnick was involved in a shooting in the 1400 block of Englewood Avenue in Joliet, according to court records. As his friend, Keyshaunna Barefield, and her cousin, Sjontre Thompson, were leaving a party, Pinnick approached their silver Chevrolet Cruze to say goodbye.

According to police, when Barefield put the vehicle in reverse, Pinnick took out a handgun and shot at

them. Thompson was killed and Barefield was wounded. But, according to defense attorney Jeff Tomczak, Barefield and Pinnick told police they’d been having friendly conversation when Pinnick returned fire at unknown attackers across a courtyard. Police said the shots that killed Thompson and wounded Barefield were fired by a semi-automatic handgun.

If found guilty of murder, Pinnick faces 20 to 60 years in prison.

Crest Hill police: Man tried using rock to break into cellphone store

bstanley@shawmedia.com CREST HILL – A Ford Heights man was arrested Friday after allegedly trying to break out the window of a cellphone store in Crest Hill.

Interim Police Chief Ed Clark said an officer was on patrol about 4:30 a.m. when he heard radio traffic indicating a burglar alarm had been activated at a cellphone business on the west side of Joliet.

“He heard that and thought it would be prudent to check our mobile phone store and drove to the T-Mobile in the Hillcrest Plaza,” Clark said. “He arrived to find a man in dark clothes and a ski mask carrying a rock near the business.”

Lyndell Graham Jr., 26, was questioned and subsequently arrested on a charge of vandalism after police discovered damage to the store’s window. Graham, of the 1500 block of Ambassador Lane, was booked into the Will County Jail.

from other JJC Master Plan projects that came in under budget, a referendum in 2008 and interest earned on bonds, Rohder said.

The building was designed by Demonica Kemper Architects and construction management was by Mortensen Construction, she said.

State funding for the project still is promised at $25.5 million.

JJC received $10 million from the state in October 2014 from former Gov. Pat Quinn for the building, but those funds were frozen under Gov. Bruce Rauner, Rohder said. The college has used surplus funds to offset the cost of the project to complete it on time.

“However, with more students to serve and declining funding from the state each year, this is not a sustainable pathway,” Rohder said. “[Mitchell] and the Board of Trustees continue to work closely with our legislative partners in Springfield to ensure a capital bill is passed and that we [receive] the funding promised to us.”

A grand opening for the City Center Campus and neighboring Renaissance Center will be held April 11, Rohder said in an email.

OBITUARIES JOHN BOHARSKI John Boharski, age 53, of Wilmington, IL passed away suddenly on Saturday January 7, 2017. Beloved son of James Boharski Sr. and Patricia Pomeroy.

Ricardo “Rick” A. Calderon, age 23, of Shorewood, passed away suddenly, Saturday, January 7, 2017 from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident.

Born September 27, 1993 in Aurora, he attended Walnut Trails Grade School, Minooka Junior High School, and was a graduate of Minooka High School where he was a member of the football team. He was employed by Jewel-Osco in Shorewood.

Rick was an exceptional young man who understood and actively pursued what he wanted out of life. He was compassionate, thoughtful, and had a big heart influenced in no small way by the relationship he had with God. A beautiful man both inside and out, he was fiercely protective of his family and a loyal and devoted friend to many.

Rick could also be the life of the party and his outgoing personality, sense of humor, and love of laughter are cherished qualities. He will be remembered for his dance moves, love of cars, football, and a good cigar.

Rick was the beloved son of Diana (Arroyo) and Mark Gentile of Shorewood; devoted big brother to Robert (Lilia) Calderon, Corina (Jerry) Calderon-Garcia, and Keira Gentile; dear grandson of Gail Dobran, Sam and Rita Gentile, and Al Arroyo; great-grandson of Wilma Jean Dobran; loving Uncle Rico to Angelina, Cameron and Alora; and fond nephew of Jeff and Abby Gentile. He will also be missed by his faithful canine companion, Penny, and many dear friends, especially Paige Gliwa and Vanessa Fosco.

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Senate’s plan to end the nation’s longest state budget deadlock fizzled Monday after Republicans declared they wanted more time to ensure Gov. Bruce Rauner’s demands are met before approving a tax increase.

The Senate’s planned action would have been symbolic. Democratic President John Cullerton and Christine Radogno, the Republican leader, knew there wouldn’t be time in the Legislature’s last two scheduled work days to push the package through the House and get it to Rauner.

But Cullerton and Radogno were hoping to distinguish the Senate from what has become a nasty battle of wills between Republican Rauner and House Speaker Michael Madigan. Madigan, the resolute Chicago Democrat who has run the House for most of the last three decades. Rauner insists that lawmakers pass some of his reforms aimed at helping business and reducing the influence of labor unions. Madigan says Rauner’s demands have nothing to do with the budget.

“We’re two years in and we don’t have a budget,” Cullerton said. “It’s embarrassing for the state and there’s been real damage that has happened to

Legislation would require schools to test for lead

CHICAGO – Illinois elementary schools and day care centers would have to test drinking water sources for lead and notify parents of the results under legislation proposed Monday.

Schools and care facilities would be responsible for the cost of the one-time testing, which environmental experts estimate could run from $500 to $5,000 per facility. The plan, unveiled as lawmakers gathered for the final days of the current legislative session, would apply to all public and private schools with students up to grade 5 and facilities built before 2000.

The proposal follows the lead-tainted water crisis in Flint, Michigan, which shed light on the dangers of lead contamination.

Cullerton pledged to present the plan to the new General Assembly. Radogno said the goal is to move quickly, to get Senate approval before month’s end.

The legislation would have increased the personal income tax rate to 4.95 percent from 3.75 percent to narrow a multibillion-dollar annual deficit and $11 billion in unpaid state bills. But

it would also have included a streamlining of purchasing, local government consolidation, reform of the tax code and limits to lawmakers’ terms. Those ideas could meet Rauner’s desire to make business and political climate changes to boost business and taxpayer confidence in the state.

Obama gives Chicago $1B for transit as he leaves office

CHICAGO – Chicago is to receive more than $1 billion from President Barack Obama’s administration to help modernize the city’s Red and Purple lines as part of a public transit construction project to create an estimated 6,000 jobs.

The funding was finalized Monday, a day before Obama is scheduled to give his farewell address in his hometown. Officials from Chicago and Illinois took the opportunity to thank Obama for not forgetting his roots during his time as president.

“Tomorrow, the president is going to come here to thank Chicago,” U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin said during a Monday morning news conference announcing the funding agreement. “Today I want to make sure that we thank him. Time and again the Obama administration has not forgotten where he came from.”

BBB warns about Obama speech ticket scams

CHICAGO – The Better Business Bureau is warning against buying tickets to President Barack Obama’s farewell speech in Chicago on online marketplaces.

Tickets were handed out for free on Saturday morning in Chicago, prompting thousands of people to wait for hours in single-digit temperatures. Obama’s speech is scheduled for Tuesday night at McCormick Place.

The Chicago Tribune reported that by Sunday auctions were posted on websites such as eBay and Craigslist asking for as much as $5,000 apiece for the tickets.

Radogno said. The current Legislature ends its session Tuesday and a new one is seated Wednesday, so there would be no time to move the proposal to the House.

The state has limped along since the middle of 2015 without an annual spending plan. State government has functioned largely because of court-ordered spending on social services and periodic appropriations by lawmakers.

But more than 1 million people have been cut from services such as mental health treatment, elderly care, domestic violence assistance and cancer screenings, as well as financial aid for college, and the state’s financial ratings have dropped.

With a temporary, six-month budget having expired Jan. 1, the House approved a measure providing what sponsor Rep. Greg Harris called a “lifeline” for education and social services.

The Chicago Democrat’s plan would take money coming in from income tax revenue and provide $258 million for social services and $400 million for higher education, including $191 million for the popular, income-based Monetary Award Program for college tuition.

Rauner’s office said the governor opposes that plan unless it is accompanied by other things he wants, such as a property tax freeze.

It’s unclear whether those tickets are legitimate or can legally be sold.

Steve Bernas, president of the Better Business Bureau of Chicago and Northern Illinois, warned against buying the tickets, saying “there’s no way to verify these tickets.”

UnitedHealth buying Surgical Care for $2.3B

NEW YORK – UnitedHealth Group is buying surgical center operator Surgical Care Affiliates for about $2.3 billion in a cash-and-stock deal that will add to its outpatient holdings.

The Minnetonka, Minnesota-based health insurer will add Deerfield, Illinois-based Surgical Care to its Optum health services unit, which has 20,000 affiliated physicians and hundreds of facilities. Surgical Care operates 205 surgical facilities and partners with about 3,000 physicians. The acquisition will be funded with between 51 percent and 80 percent of UnitedHealth stock. The remainder will be in cash.

Fla. shooting suspect gets public defender in court

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Iraq war veteran held in the fatal shooting of five people inside Fort Lauderdale’s airport was appointed a federal public defender on Monday after telling a judge that he has no job and only $5 or $10 in the bank.

Esteban Santiago, 26, spoke clearly during a brief hearing before U.S. Magistrate Judge Alicia Valle, who ordered him held until his next hearings.

Shackled in a red jumpsuit in the heavily guarded federal courtroom, Santiago answered mostly yes or no to questions, and told the judge he understands the charges, which include committing violence against people at an international airport resulting in death, and two firearms offenses.

She told him the death penalty could apply.

“We are telling you the maximum penalty allowed by law so that you understand the seriousness of the charges,” the judge said.

He said he had been in the Army, where he made about $15,000 a year. He mentioned expenses including $560 in monthly rent, plus phone and other utility bills. He said he owns no property and doesn’t have a vehicle. He said he had worked for a security company, Signal 88, in Anchorage, Alaska, until November, making $2,100 a month, but currently only had $5 to $10 in the bank.

Given his finances, the judge decided he’s eligible for government lawyers at taxpayer expense.

Valle set a detention hearing for Jan. 17, followed by an arraignment for entering a plea for Jan. 23.

More than a dozen officers kept watch outside the courthouse, carrying rifles and wearing bulletproof vests.

The charges don’t specifically use the word murder, but the effects of one of the gun charges and the airport charge are the same because they cover actions that result in a person’s death and can result in capital punishment, former federal prosecutor David S. Weinstein said.

“Under federal law, there are many statutes that cover the killing of another human being and unlike state statutes, they are not specifically titled murder. But the elements of the crime and the definition of murder are the same,” he said.

State authorities could file first-degree murder charges against Santiago, but that’s unnecessary for now, Weinstein added, because there is no statute of limitations on murder. If something were to go wrong in federal court, the state could then proceed against him, he said.

No links to international terrorism have been found, the FBI has said. But if they surface, federal prosecutors could obtain an updated grand jury indictment to add terror-related charges, Weinstein added.

“Their focus right now will be on the existing three charges and the continuing

investigation,” he said.

Santiago has been in custody since Friday’s shooting at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. The FBI said Santiago flew on a one-way ticket aboard a Delta flight from Anchorage to Fort Lauderdale. The 11½-hour flight has a 2½-hour layover in Minneapolis, one of the longest itineraries within the U.S. He checked a single piece of luggage: a gun box for his Walther 9 mm semi-automatic pistol and two magazines of ammunition, according to an FBI affidavit. Agents say he retrieved the box in baggage claim and loaded his weapon in a bathroom stall before opening fire on fellow passengers, killing five and wounding six others.

In November, Santiago walked into an FBI field office in Alaska with a handgun and his infant child, saying the U.S. government was controlling his mind and forcing him to watch Islamic State group videos, authorities said.

Officers seized the weapon and local officers took him to get a mental health evaluation. His girlfriend picked up the child. On Dec. 8, the gun was returned to Santiago.

WASHINGTON – A last-minute decision by the Obama administration to designate election systems as critical infrastructure drew intense criticism from state and federal elections organizations on Monday.

U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson announced the move Friday with 30 minutes’ notice to the National Association of Secretaries of State and U.S. Election Assistance Commission, an independent bipartisan federal agency that develops voluntary voting guidelines and certifies voting systems.

Officials at both agencies are criticizing the department for what they said was a failure to work with state officials to fully answer their questions about the designation before making the change.

“We’re having trouble understanding exactly what they’re going to do, that we’re not already doing,” Connecticut Secretary of State Denise W.

Merrill, who heads the national secretaries association, told The Associated Press. “States were already doing much of this [security work] themselves using very different products.”

Discussions between Homeland Security Department officials and the states about whether to designate elections systems as critical infrastructure began in August after hackers targeted the voter registration systems of ultimately more than 20 states in the months prior to the election.

But after many states expressed worries about the potential for increased federal regulation or oversight, Secretary Johnson said he wouldn’t make a decision until after the election.

The designation puts responsibilities on the Department of Homeland Security, requiring it to conduct security checks and provide information about emerging and imminent threats.

The designation does not, however, require entities identified as critical infrastructure to participate.

Much of the nation’s critical infrastructure is in the private sector. Other

sectors identified as critical infrastructure include energy, financial services, health care, transportation, food and agriculture and communications.

Christy McCormick, a commissioner for the U.S. Election Assistance Commission, said the decision potentially gives significant authority to numerous federal agencies. “We don’t know how this will work. This has not been thought out [and] the scope of what they’re speaking about is huge,” she said.

The election process in the U.S. is highly decentralized, with voters casting ballots in 185,000 precincts spread over 9,000 jurisdictions during the 2016 presidential election. It is also subject to rigorous and elaborate rules that govern how and what equipment is used.

Election infrastructure that would fall under the designation as defined

by DHS includes storage facilities, polling places and vote tabulation locations, plus technology involved in the process, such as voter registration databases, voting machines and other

systems used to manage the election process and report and display results.

McCormick said Homeland Security ignored commissioners’ requests to delay a decision until there is more discussion. She called the move an example of “federal overreach” and said she will ask President-elect Donald Trump to review the decision.

The commission itself was apparently hacked after the election and the involved server remains offline. McCormick said no information was compromised.

Johnson’s announcement came hours after U.S. intelligence agencies released a declassified report that said Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered an influence campaign aimed at the U.S. presidential election. The report said Russian intelligence services had “obtained and maintained access to elements of multiple U.S. state or local electoral boards,” but didn’t elaborate.

The report also said there was no evidence the operation affected any vote tallies.

WASHINGTON – More Americans feel Barack Obama’s presidency divided the country than feel it brought people together, a new poll shows. Yet he leaves office held in high esteem by a solid majority.

Eight years after Obama’s historic election, just 27 percent see the U.S. as more united as a result of his presidency, according to an Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll conducted after the 2016 election. Far more – 44 percent – say it’s more divided.

Those figures underscore one of the key contradictions of Obama’s presidency. By and large, Americans like him.

Yet, aside from the big “Obamacare” health care overhaul, he has been unable to translate that approval into congressional majorities to fulfill many of his goals.

“It’s one of the few regrets of my presidency – that the rancor and suspicion between the parties has gotten worse instead of better,” Obama said last January in his final State of the Union address.

Still, 57 percent say they view Obama favorably, putting him way ahead of his predecessor, George W. Bush, and on par with Bill Clinton at the end of their two terms. Clinton had the same 57 percent but Bush just 40, according to

For Ronald Thornton, a 62-yearold African-American from Chicago, change has come only around the margins. Thornton said he views Obama very favorably, but he added that even Obama’s biggest achievement – the Affordable Care Act, or “Obamacare” – had come with downsides for people like him.

“The first year that it went into effect, I didn’t have insurance,” said Thornton, who later purchased care through the Obamacare marketplaces. “I was penalized for it that year, and I really don’t have money to pay for that penalty.”

By and large, Americans’ views of Obama break along partisan lines. Nearly 9 in 10 Democrats and people who lean Democratic view him favorably, while 3 in 4 Republicans and GOP-leaning Americans have a negative view.

Independents are roughly divided.

Construction stocks may benefit from Trump’s spending Dear Mr. Berko: I want to invest $40,000, which is about 15 percent of my individual retirement account, in construction stocks that will benefit

Dear FF: Ask a teenager, not an adult. The average smartphone user has experienced a 27 percent weight gain in the past five years. Just look around you.

Few civilized men have heard of Aecom (ACM-$37.17), a $17.4 billion-revenue company with 92,000 employees. ACM provides consulting, engineering design and construction management services for highways, airports, bridges, mass transit systems and water and wastewater facilities for commercial, industrial and government clients.

ACM has had disappointing revenues and earnings during the past few years, but the shares have rallied nicely since Trump’s victory. There are a large number of road infrastructure ballot initiatives across the nation.

And Wall Street is bullish on ACM’s prospects for road infrastructure, especially the possibility that

Over the coming four years, ACM’s revenues may grow to $22 billion, and its net profit margin may improve to 3.4 percent. Earnings could grow from $2.95 a share to $4.60 by 2021. ACM has a good balance sheet and had a strong cash flow of over $700 million last year.

Argus Research, Bank of America, Credit Suisse and Thomson Reuters have “buy” recommendations on ACM. Consider buying ACM on a pullback to $32 with a good-till-canceled order marked “do not reduce.”

Valspar’s (VAL-$104) merger with Sherwin-Williams should make the resulting company a plum investment for infrastructure spending. VAL sells decorative and protective coatings for metal, woodwork and plastics, primarily to original equipment manufacturers, and it also sells consumer paints, stains, primers, varnishes and faux finishes.

VAL has been selling stuff since 1806, when Tom Jefferson was president; it was also the year in which Ralph Wedgwood invented carbon

paper. This $4.2 billion-revenue firm with 5,200 employees enjoys strong and improving net profit margins, a dividend that has been increasing by 10 percent annually since 2008 and an impressive 34 percent return on equity.

The Street believes that in the coming four years, VAL could post 25 percent revenue growth and a 40 percent net earnings improvement, though the dividend growth may be slower. Bank of America and J.P. Morgan believe that VAL could trade between $140 and $145 in the next four years.

Place a good-till-canceled order at $92, and mark it “DNR.” United Rentals (URI-$110), with an integrated network of over 900 rental locations in the U.S. and Canada, rents a whole lot of stuff and things – such as backhoes, skid loaders, forklifts, earth-moving equipment, material-handling equipment, aerial work platforms, boom lifts, scissor lifts, pressure washers, pumps, power tools, diesel generators, hydraulic shoring systems, crossing plates, trench shields and most of the other things needed to rebuild America’s infrastructure.

Revenues for 2017 should come in at $5.76 billion, very minutely higher than 2016’s $5.65 billion, and earnings may come in at $8.45 a share, just

slightly up from $8.15. However, going out four years, Morningstar suggests an impressive turnaround; revenues are projected at $7.3 billion, and earnings could come in at $12.35 a share as management improves net profit margins by nearly 50 percent, from 10.1 percent to 14.8 percent. Some say URI could trade in the $165-$175 range by 2021. Place a GTC order at $98.50, and have the stockbroker mark the ticket “DNR.” Finally, consider the PowerShares Dynamic Building & Construction Portfolio (PKB-$28). This exchange-traded fund is managed to correspond to the price and yield of the Dynamic Building & Construction Intellidex index.

PKB will invest a minimum of 90 percent of its assets in the common stocks of the building and construction companies included in that index. Some of those issues are Home Depot, Jacobs Engineering Group, A.O. Smith, Boise Cascade, Mohawk Industries and Insteel Industries.

There should be some attractive upside here.

Place a GTC order at $24.15, and once again, mark it “do not reduce.”

McDonald’s sells China business in deal worth up to $2.1B

The Associated Press HONG KONG – Fast-food giant McDonald’s is selling a controlling stake in its China business to a group of investors led by state-owned Chinese conglomerate Citic in a deal worth up to $2.1 billion, the companies said Monday.

The transaction is part of a global business overhaul being carried out by the American company to keep up with changing tastes that have resulted in declining sales.

Under the terms of the deal, Citic Ltd. and its investment management unit Citic Capital will acquire 52 percent of the business while another partner, Washington-based private equity firm The Carlyle Group, will own 28 percent. McDonald’s will retain a 20 percent stake.

About two-thirds of the China operation’s 2,640 outlets, including 240 in Hong Kong, that are now owned by McDonald’s will be refranchised. The

China business, which employs more than 120,000 people, is valued at up

to $2.1 billion, according to the agreement.

Under McDonald CEO Steve Easterbook’s restructuring plan launched in 2015, the company wants franchisees to take over more company-owned outlets, giving local managers more decision-making power to respond to Asian customers.

McDonald’s is China’s second-biggest fast-food company after Yum Brands’ KFC, which has more than 5,000 locations. It has faced trouble recently in China after it was caught in a food safety scandal when a supplier was found selling expired meat.

McDonald’s will get cash and new shares under the terms of the agreement, which is for 20 years.

The deal, which still needs approval from regulators, is expected to be completed by mid-2017.

Oak Brook, Illinois-based McDonald’s and its partners plan to add 1,500 restaurants in China and Hong Kong over the next five years to capitalize on booming demand from the country’s growing middle class that has money to spend on eating out.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Co. – The 2017 class of the NJCAA Men’s Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame was released Monday and one of the five inductees is Joliet Junior College coach Joe Kuhn, who is the 12th Illinois coach honored and the second from JJC, joining A.A. “Fizz” Wills, who was in the hall’s inaugural class in 1984.

Kuhn began his 20th season with Joliet in 2016. He helped guide the Wolves to 431 wins entering this season, including the 2010 NJCAA DIII men’s basketball championship and a runner-up finish at the national tournament in 2008 and 2005. JJC has had 15 straight NJCAA Region 4 Cham-

2. Joliet West (14-1): The Tigers have run into situations where they get into an offensive lull and do not shoot free throws well. They look to get back on track offensively in this week’s games against Oswego East and Plainfield South. Of course, they always have their quick, athletic defense to rely on.

3. Joliet Central (13-1): The Steelmen, who have won 10 straight, have two home games this week, with Plainfield East visiting Tuesday night and Minooka coming in Friday night. Friday’s game will mark the third meeting between the Steelmen and Indians. Minooka won a close game for the WJOL Thanksgiving Classic title and Central went on the road and scored a 46-21 victory in December.

4. Minooka (11-3): When the Indians won 20-plus games last season, it was a big deal because that had not happened in nearly 40 years. Coach Scott Tanaka has his team, which won at Oswego, 52-37, last Friday night, heading toward another 20win season this time around. If the Indians have success over the next week, they could be knocking on the door of 20 victories sooner than later.

5. Lincoln-Way East (10-4): The Griffins have been off for the last week and a half after finishing fourth in

Joliet has won at least 20 games in 13 of the last 14 seasons, which includes a current streak of 11. Kuhn’s has been recognized through various coach of the year awards, including 2010 National Coach of the Year, District 2 Coach of the Year (6), Region IV Coach of the Year (6), North Central Community College Conference (7), Illinois Basketball Coaches Association (6), and Indiana Basketball News’ Coach of the Year in 2006.

During his tenure at JJC, Kuhn has coached a total of 15 NJCAA All-Americans – including 2009-10 DIII Player of the Year Brian Bradley – and a total of 35 All-Region players.

7. Joliet Catholic (8-7): The Hilltoppers have won five of their last six games and are looking to make that six of seven in Tuesday night’s nonconference home game against Manteno. The tough-to-swallow overtime loss to Lockport in December may be working in JCA’s favor now.

8. Lemont (8-7): The Indians rolled over Evergreen Park, 64-44, last Friday night as Pipes scored 25 points in his second game since returning from suspension. No doubt the Indians are much more dangerous with him in the lineup. Meanwhile, some of his teammates picked up valuable experience in his absence.

9. Romeoville (7-7): Romeoville is a young team, indicative of the up-and-down nature of the Spartans’ results to date. However, they do have talent and are a threat to get on a good run in the second half of the season.

10. Morris (7-7): The Redskins finished a stretch where they played eight games in 13 days when they beat Seneca, 46-32, last Saturday at the United Center. Matt Shaw, Tyler Spiezio and JaQuan Boxley are leading the way for coach Joe Blumberg’s team.

Before taking over at Joliet, Kuhn had various coaching jobs, including as the head coach at Rich East from 1994-96, an assistant coach under Pat Klingler at Joliet during the 1992-93 season and an assistant coach at the University of St. Francis under Pat Sullivan.

Kuhn is currently a teacher at Rich East, where he has been for the last 25 years. He resides in New Lenox with his wife, Kathy, and daughter, Caitlin.

STEELERS’ ALL-STAR Another local 9-year-old has been invited to participate in the same All-Star game in Virginia Beach.

Thomas “TJ” Jones, a fourth-grader at Farragut School in Joliet, helped lead the Joliet Steelers Mighty Mites to an 8-1 regular-season. The Steelers lost in the opening round of the playoffs.

Jones scored 24 touchdowns and rushed for more than 900 yards this season. Defensively from his outside linebacker position, he had more than 60 tackles, six sacks, three forced fumbles and an interception.

All of that, along with impressive game film, earned Jones an invitation to the All-American Game that was played Dec. 31 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. He played for the winning Red team, largely on the defensive side of the ball, and had five tackles and a sack.

Jones not only plays football, he wrestles for the Will County Warriors and is a three-time IKWF state qualifier. He placed eighth in a national tournament in Wisconsin.

JOLIET – Jesse Palomar is president of the Joliet Ravens Youth Football & Cheer organization.

He also coached the 8- and 9year-old Ravens Mighty Mites to the United Youth Football national championship in December at Tampa, Fla. As a result, the Ravens were recognized at a recent Joliet City Council meeting, and they have memories that will last a lifetime.

“It was like a movie. I couldn’t think of a better scenario than us having a chance to beat them for the national championship,” Palomar said of the Mighty Mites taking down Tri-City from St. Charles, Illinois, 6-0, in the title game.

The Raves had beaten Tri-City, 136, during the regular season but lost to their rival, 14-13, in the state championship game (both participants in the state final received an invitation to the national tournament).

“At our age football, you get two points for kicking an extra point,” Palomar said. “We were ahead, 1312, in the fourth quarter. I couldn’t believe it when they had a 9-yearold come out and kick the field goal, and he made it, so they beat us, 1413. That was heartbreaking for the kids. And it was terrific for us that we got to play them for the national championship.”

The Ravens won a double-overtime decision over a team from Buffalo, New York, and beat at hometown Tampa team to reach the title game.

“The kids were ecstatic when they won it,” Palomar said. “The whole tournament was like that.”

Palomar said he had 20 players on the Mighty Mite roster. They included quarterbacks Dylan Pangrazio and Anthony Howell-Simms, who threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Pangrazio on a fourth-andgoal from the 13-yard line to help win a game at the nationals.

Pangrazio and Howell-Simms are among the Ravens who have been invited to participate in the Diamond Sports Group Fourth-Grade All-Star Game that is scheduled May 26-29 at Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Others are Tre Malone, Billy Mutz, Keshawn Wiley, Manny Palomar, Aiden Robinson and John Sherrod.

“We have 160 kids in the entire organization, 200 including cheerleaders,” Palomar said. “We started

Saban’s ‘process’ gets results, but is hard to define

The Associated Press TAMPA, Fla. – The system of core beliefs, this daily guidebook for going about your business, has carried Nick Saban and Alabama to the brink of yet another national championship.

Call it The Process. Call it the Saban Way. It’s hard to call it anything but successful.

But what is it? That’s harder to define.

Alabama defensive end Jonathan Allen thinks if Saban could bottle it up alongside all the self-help books, the famed process – the most common short-hand description for the mentality of the Crimson Tide program – would be “priceless.”

“It’ll give you anything you ever wanted, if you just realize the process and understand and know how to work it,” Allen said, sounding like a pie-inthe-sky infomercial pitchman.

Except it’s worked to the tune of four national championships in seven seasons and a shot at No. 5. For Saban, a win Monday night against No. 3 Clemson at Raymond James Stadium would equal Bear Bryant’s record of six overall titles, including one at LSU. The philosophies constantly preached by Saban follow his players into the NFL, long after they leave Tuscaloosa. Ex-Tide safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix of the Green Bay Packers said

the process really boils down to following the rules and being accountable – on and off the field.

“Becoming a young man, coming out of high school and starting to be on your own, it’s a process,” Clinton-Dix said.

“You have to buy into that process. You go to college, it’s going to be guys that are going to be just as good as you or better, and if Saban can’t trust you to go to class, and do just the little things, understand and be consistent, it’s going to be very hard for you to get on the field, or for him to trust you as a player.

“The first thing you have to do is to buy into that process and find your way on the field.”

Alabama players have said they often catch themselves, like true converts, with family and friends parroting one of Saban’s sayings: Be where your feet are.

Do your job. Dominate your box. Keep chopping wood. Buy into The Process.

The Process. Of course.

A little is known about the philosophy’s origins: Saban said he got much of it from mentor Bill Belichick of the New England Patriots from their days together with the Cleveland Browns.

“I think what we’re trying to say when people talk about The Process is there’s a certain way that you go about whatever it is you’re trying to accomplish, and you define that so everybody clearly understands what their role is,” Saban said. “Everybody has got to buy into it, or it doesn’t really work.”

The ASSOCIATED PRESS EVANSTON – Northwestern women’s basketball player Jordan Hankins has been found dead in her room at the university.

The university said in a statement that Hankins’ body was found Monday afternoon. The statement from spokesman Carsten Parmenter said there is no indication of foul play or “any danger or threat to other members of the Northwestern community.”

The nature and cause of Hankins’ death will be determined by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Women’s basketball coach Joe McKeown is calling Hankins, a sophomore, a “remarkably dynamic young woman,” adding her death is a “devastating loss for our basketball family.”

Hankins was recruited out of Lawrence North High School in Indianapolis, where she received Indiana Basketball Coaches Association/Subway Underclass All-State Honorable Mention in both 2013 and 2014.

CHICAGO – Russell Westbrook had 21 points, 14 assists and nine rebounds, helping the Oklahoma City Thunder pull away from the Bulls for an easy, 109-94 victory Monday night.

Steven Adams scored 22 points and Enes Kanter had 20 points and 11 rebounds, leading a dominant performance inside for Oklahoma City. Victor Oladipo added 13 points.

Dwyane Wade led the Bulls with 22 points, and Michael Carter-Williams had 15. Cristiano Felicio finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

The Bulls had won three in a row and five of seven, but they were no match for the Thunder with Jimmy Butler hampered by an illness. The reigning Eastern Conference player of week had one point on 0-for-6 shooting and seven assists in 29 minutes before exiting in the third quarter.

You can use your treadmill for more than a boring walk

MIAMI – Just because it’s too cold for your normal 3-mile outdoor run doesn’t mean the treadmill has to be a monotonous exercise in staring at a blank wall.

Los Angeles-based trainers Jeanette Jenkins and Massy Arias offer the following tips for getting out of the treadmill rut. Vary the speed and incline, add arm weights and use the treadmill when it’s not running for circuit training moves.

Massy Arias has more than 2 million Instagram followers, offering up various moves and inspirational messages on how working out has helped heal her depression. And even though she’s nearly eight months’ pregnant, she’s still doing some seriously hardcore workouts.

“Treadmills don’t have to be boring and don’t need to keep you stagnant.

If you are creative, you can turn your steady cardio run into effective workouts that can push even the most advanced athletes.”

SPEED TRAINING

Sprinting can be one of the best exercises for building muscle and decreasing body fat. Try sprinting for one-minute intervals at a speed between 10 and 12 mph. Use a two-minute jog at four mph to recover. Repeat eight times.

TREADMILL PUSH-OFFS

The treadmill doesn’t have to be running in order to be effective. Incorporate treadmill push-offs by holding onto the treadmill heart beat sensors and pushing off the belt as fast as you can for 60 seconds. It is extremely challenging and works the legs and glutes.

CIRCUIT TRAIN

Grab a mat and some moderate- to high-resistance dumbbells. Pair two strength exercises with sprint intervals or a simple fast run. Here are two options: Perform 12 to 15 repetitions of dumbbell squats followed by 12-15 reps on each leg of one-legged lunges with your back foot resting on the treadmill. Follow it with a 30-second run at 10 mph.

Repeat three times.

Perform eight to 10 wide pushups with feet on the back of the treadmill followed by planks or tricep dips using the treadmill handle bars or modify it using the back of the treadmill. Follow it with a one-minute run at six mph with a 2.0 incline. Repeat three times.

Founder of The Hollywood Trainer Club with clients such as Pink and Alicia Keys, Jeanette Jenkins loves to mix up her treadmill routines with various

speeds, inclines and weights. She has more than a dozen workout DVDs, including “Sexy Abs” with singer Kelly Rowland.

“Changing up your pace, speed, incline and exercises every two to five minutes keeps the workout interesting so the time flies and before you know it you will have completed a total body kick butt workout.”

Jenkins suggests the following 45- to 60-minute workout: 1. Jog at a speed between 6 and 8 mph or at a comfortable warm-up pace for one mile.

2. Walk uphill at a 10.0 incline for two minutes then add dumbbell exercises using 3- to 5-pound weights. As you walk, do 25 repetitions of each: shoulder press, tricep kickbacks and upright rows.

3. Pause treadmill, step off and do 25 pushups.

4. Get back on the treadmill and sprint for 30-45 seconds at a speed of 10 to 12 mph or your best pace. Recover for 30-60 seconds. Repeat five times.

5. Pause the treadmill, step off and do 25 regular squats or 25 jump squats using only your bodyweight. Stand on the side rails or step off the treadmill for more intensity.

6. Get back on the treadmill and walk uphill at an incline of 10.0 for two minutes then grab a pair of weights. While walking, do 25 reps of shoulder presses followed by 25 reps of tricep kickbacks and finish off with 25 reps of upright rows.

7. Sprint 30 to 45 seconds at a speed 10 to 12 mph or your best pace. Recover for 30-60 seconds. Repeat five times.

8. Pause treadmill, step off and do 25 pushups.

9. Walk at an incline of 10.0 for two minutes then grab a set of weights. Do 10 to 16 reps each of rotating overhead press. Set your weights down and do 50 to 100 boxing jabs, alternating with each arm. Finish off with 10 to 16 reps of tricep extensions.

10. Pause the treadmill, step off and do 25 jump squats or regular squats using only your bodyweight.

11. Sprint 30 to 45 seconds at a speed 10 to 12 mph or your best pace. Recover for 30 to 60 seconds. Repeat five times.

12. 25 pushups 13. 25 jump squats or regular squats 14. Finish strong with a one-mile jog between 6 and 8 mph or your best pace.

For the last half mile, increase your speed by 0.5 every 30 seconds going to 6.5, seven, 7.5 etc. Listen to your body and only increase the speed to a pace you can maintain with good form.

15. Finish with abs by doing 100 bicycle crunches.

BOLINGBROOK – The Bolingbrook Fire Department has been selected to receive a grant from the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation.

The grant, valued at $11,690, will provide a thermal imaging camera with a hot and cold spot tracker, and charger.

The awarded camera will be used to detect body heat and hot spots in

burning buildings, allowing firefighters to quickly locate victims and provide life-saving assistance.

The department submitted the grant application at the end of 2016.

Delivery of the thermal imaging camera is expected later this year.

MORRIS – Tephany Odum, of Morris, was born to solve problems and help people.

That’s why the new client service representative position in the laboratory at Morris Hospital is a perfect fit for Odum, whose positive attitude and willingness to help others make her a role model for service excellence.

Odum was honored as Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers’ Fire Starter of the Month for Nov. After moving to Morris from southern Illinois in 2009, Odum joined the

team at Morris Hospital as a phlebotomist and later transferred to lab clerk.

Since becoming the laboratory’s client service representative in 2015, Odum has built positive relationships with physician offices and rehabilitation/ nursing home facilities that use the Morris Hospital laboratory.

For someone like Odum who enjoys problem-solving, being the department “fixer” is a role she embraces.

Morris Hospital laboratory director Kimberly Wolfer says Odum does a phenomenal job in her position and is deserving of the Fire Starter award.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness Will-Grundy, the local NAMI affiliate, will offer two education courses for family, friends and care givers of people living with mental health conditions.

NAMI Family-to-Family Course begins on Jan.19 and runs weekly on Thursdays for 12 weeks. The class is held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the NAMI Will-Grundy office in Joliet.

NAMI Family-to-Family provides critical information and strategies for taking care of loved ones, as well as support for the family members.

NAMI Basics Course is for parents and caregivers of children and teens with emotional and behavioral diffi-

culties. Trained teachers who are the parents or other caregivers of individuals who developed emotional and behavioral difficulties before the age of 13 lead the course. The course gives parents and other caregivers basic information necessary to take the best care possible of their children. NAMI Basics provides tools for the parent and family caregiver to use even after completing the program.

The classes begin Jan. 21 and run weekly on Saturdays for six weeks.

The class is held from 8:30 to 11 a.m. at the NAMI Will-Grundy office in Joliet.

Suburban Signature Chefs’ Auction event helps the March of Dimes BOLINGBROOK – The annual March of Dimes Suburban Signature Chefs’ Auction event took place at the Bolingbrook Golf Club on Nov. 17.

The event raised more than $120,000.

The event boasted the area’s finest culinary talent while supporting the March of Dimes fund research, education, advocacy and programs that help more moms have full-term pregnancies and healthy babies.

30 Osteoporosis risk increases after menopause Dear Doctors: I just turned 65, and even though I’m strong and healthy, my friends say I should be concerned about osteoporosis. What is it, and how do I know if I have it?

Dear Reader: Osteoporosis, which literally means “porous bones,” is a progressive disease in which bone mass is lost. As a result, bones become thinner, more fragile and are at higher risk of fracture. People with osteoporosis most often break a bone in the hip, forearm or spine.

Although osteoporosis can occur in men and women of any age, post-menopausal women have the highest risk. This is due to the steep drop in the production of estrogen, a hormone produced by the ovaries, which protects against bone loss.

Risk of osteoporosis increases along with a person’s age. A family history of the disease is an indicator of risk, as are alcoholism, cigarette smoking, anorexia and steroid therapy. Race also plays a role, with Caucasian and Asian women more likely to develop osteoporosis than other ethnicities.

To understand osteoporosis, let’s first talk about bones: Your skeleton, which supports and protects your body, is made up of living tissue.

It’s also a storehouse of essential minerals that are held within your bones. Throughout your life, your bones go through a metabolic process called remodeling, in which old bone tissue is removed from the skeleton and new bone tissue is formed.

As we age, the formation of new bone tissue slows. In people with osteoporosis, the formation of new bone can’t keep pace with the removal of old bone, which results in a net decrease in bone density. In addition to an increased risk of fracture, people with osteoporosis experience a loss of height, stooped posture and decreased mobility.

So how can you know if you have osteoporosis?

This is a painless scan in which low-level X-rays are used to reveal the proportion of minerals in your bones. During the test you lie on a padded table as the technician scans several areas, usually your hip, spinal column and wrist.

Treatment for osteoporosis ranges from lifestyle changes, such as adding an exercise plan and switching to a diet rich in calcium and vitamin D, to a range of medications that you would discuss with your doctor.

No matter your age, there are things you can do to keep your bones strong. Calcium is one of the building blocks of new bone, and to successfully absorb that calcium, your body needs vitamin D. Dairy foods, certain nuts and green leafy vegetables contain lots of calcium. Eggs, fatty fish and fortified milk contain vitamin D. Talk to your doctor about whether you need supplements of calcium and/or vitamin D. Staying physically active strengthens both muscle and bone. Try weight-bearing exercises three to four times a week, and don’t forget about balance and agility exercises, which can help prevent a fall.

Your bones hold you up, allow you to move and contain the marrow that produces about 230 billion red blood cells a day – don’t take your bones for granted.

She was the only survivor; two others died. Her injuries are extensive and traumatic, and it might take years for her to fully recover.

Dear Abby: “Kirk” and I have been together for 10 years, married for five. We’re nearing our 30s, and the idea of a child has come up. few months ago, I left my husband after a long marriage, mostly due to his drinking.

Better is to take the heart finesse at trick two. If it wins, ruff the club three, take the spade ace-queen and heart ace, ruff a heart, draw the last trump and try diamonds for an overtrick. Here, the heart finesse loses and, say, a club is returned. South ruffs in the dummy, cashes the top trumps, plays a heart to the useful 10, draws the missing trump and takes the diamond finesse.

Wiseman felt sure that East had the heart king, so she ruffed the club three at trick two, cashed the spade ace-queen and led a low heart from the board. East had no answer.
