Economy Power and Light Company – Joliet The Economy Light and Power Company was incorporated in 1901, under the laws of Illinois, as a reincorporation of a company of the same name established in July 1890. In 1906, the company again was reincorporated after the Channahon Power Company was purchased.

The power needs for local consumers were produced by the dam near the Jackson Street bridge that helped to operate the large generators that supplied the power to the city. In the first decade of the 20th century, the company owned a generating plant in Joliet and a substation at Lemont, having a total daily capacity of 7,000 kilowatts.

In 1905, the Economy Light and Power Company of Joliet obtained permission from the Illinois and Michigan Canal Company to lease and build a small power dam across the Des Plaines River at Dresden Heights, Channahon.

State and local officials objected, claiming that it would impede navigation on a proposed deep waterway that would make Chicago accessible to ocean-going vessels via the Mississippi River.

Economy Light and Power responded by bringing its own suit to seize a large tract of land surrounding the Dresden site, claiming that a private business that was an essential utility provider should enjoy the right to eminent domain.

When utility mogul Samuel Insull and his Commonwealth Edison company took control of Economy Light and Power and began construction on a new dam in 1907, the Sanitary District of Metropolitan Chicago responded by trying to halt the construction through an act in the state Legislature. Local and state governments also joined in a lawsuit against Economy and focused on the navigability issue.

The Grundy County Court and the state appellate court both sided with the company. On Oct. 26, 1909, the Supreme Court of Illinois held that the title of the Economy Light & Power Company to “water powers” of the Des Plaines River was valid.

OLD POSTCARD IMAGES SOUGHT FOR PUBLICATION David Belden is a history teacher at Minooka Community High School and is publishing local postcard books with Arcadia Publishing in his Local History classes. He and his students are looking for old Joliet photos and postcards, and images from Joliet’s parks, for a new publication.

In December of the same year, the U.S. government began suit in federal court against the company over the construction of the same dam at Dresden Heights.

The federal government believed the Des Plaines River is a navigable stream and objected to the attempt of the company to construct a dam across the river.

In 1911, Samuel Insull acquired five companies and formed a new holding company, Public Service Company of Northern Illinois, a public service. The $25 million organization gave him the electricity market surrounding Chicago, including the communities of Waukegan, Evanston, Maywood, Blue Island, Oak Park, Kankakee, Streator, Ottawa, Morris, Wilmington, Crystal Lake and Joliet.

Joliet police K-9 retired after nine years of service

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Patrol shifts have been a little different for Joliet Police Officer Pete Van Gessel since the new year began.

“I’m not used to checking the rearview mirror and seeing the backseat,” he said. “Usually, he’s there taking up the entire [visible area].”

For nine years, Van Gessel’s K-9 partner, Biaky, rode in the back of his squad car, ready for searches, tracking and community outreach. The 10-yearold German shepherd was retired from service last month because of canine arthritis.

The dog was born in Holland, and despite searching online for translations, Van Gessel has no idea what the name means. He speculated Biaky is “the European version of Fido.”

Van Gessel had dogs growing up, but had no interest in being a K-9 officer until he saw how they could assist in many different cases. He and Biaky learned to work together during a sixweek academy and trained monthly throughout the dog’s career.

In 2013, Biaky found 30 kilos of cocaine and more than 100 pounds of marijuana hidden in the refrigeration unit of a semitrailer. He also found drugs hidden in car trunks, guns hidden inside vehicles and bundles of cash inside a gas tank.

“We’ve kicked in doors, done building searches and found burglars,” Van Gessel said. “You can have 20 officers trying to control a crowd (unsuccessfully), and then it will just take the one dog.

“He can be a distraction. I once had a burglar come out of a building so focused on the dog he didn’t see the six officers coming up next to him.”

Van Gessel and Biaky also have assisted other agencies, from Evanston to Wilmington to Yorkville, over the years.

“He’s been one of the best dogs you can have. He can go from friendly to mean guy in two seconds,” Van Gessel said. “If I’ve been parked somewhere working on a report, he’ll tell me when someone’s coming up to the car... and he’s still the guardian of [my] house.”

‘She fought it to the bitter end’ Nicole Alaimo wanted to beat cancer for the sake of her daughter

JOLIET – “She fought it to the bitter end.”

So said Przemyslaw “Shem” Wisniewski of Joliet, the fiance of Nicole Alaimo of Joliet and father of their daughter, Isabella, 2. Always a bridesmaid and never a bride, Nicole had two strong reasons for fighting breast cancer – Isabella and her idea of a dream wedding.

“She was always the bridesmaid and never the bride,” said Greg Baez, Nicole’s father. “And she would do everything and anything for the bride.”

Darlene Baez of Joliet, Nicole’s mother, said Nicole had been a bridesmaid dozens of time. She hosted any prenuptial parties and always made the food, Greg said. But as happy as Nicole was to support her friends, Nicole had her own idea of a dream wedding, which she shared in a previous Herald-News story.

A beautiful dress. Eight bridesmaids.

About 130 guests. A service at the Cathedral of St. Raymond in Joliet. A dinner at a banquet hall. A DJ. In the previous story, Patty D’Andrea of Plainfield, Nicole’s aunt, said Nicole’s oncologist urged Nicole to move up the date. But Nicole wanted to wait until the summer of 2017, which Nicole felt was sufficient time to regain her health.

“I just want to look like Cinderella,” Nicole had said.

Such a small wish for a woman who valued family and spent her life giving.

Nicole passed on activities with her friends if it meant not playing Bingo or card games with her family, Greg said.

“Family meant the world to her,” Greg said.

In the story, Nicole said she found a lump in her breast two days before her grandmother died in March 2012. Tests showed Nicole had triple negative breast cancer as well as the BRCA1 gene, which is associated with higher risk for certain cancers. Nicole said chemotherapy started after her diagnosis, and she had a double mastectomy in September 2012, followed by reconstruction. All went well – until the cancer returned in October 2016 and spread to her hips and brain.

Although Nicole Alaimo never had the opportunity to walk down the aisle, she and her daughter, Isabella, did get the chance to try on dresses.

But cancer couldn’t take Nicole’s generous spirit.

“I think her legacy that she leaves behind is that you help others, you be kind

to one another and you help as many people as you can,” Patty said.

During her high school years, Nicole baby-sat for anyone needing her services

– including one family who had a child with leukemia – without ever expecting anything in return, Darlene said.

“When my parents were sick with cancer, she’d take the day off work to take them to their treatments,” Darlene said.

Patty said she worked at ATI Physical Therapy with Nicole and witnessed Nicole’s generous heart in action.

“We walked for children with disabilities, we did cancer walks and Relay for Life,” Patty said. “We volunteered beforehand to hand out bags and T-shirts and sign everybody up.”

Not everyone valued Nicole’s generosity, but Nicole never minded.

“I think sometimes people took advantage of her caring heart, unfortunately, but she always helped people, felt sorry for people, and she tried to do what she could to help,” Patty said.

Nicole was 34 when she died Nov. 30.

She missed Christmas, which she loved, but that didn’t stop Nicole from wrapping Christmas presents from her hospital bed or getting a Christmas present for her mother.

“It made her so excited to give,” Darlene Baez said. “I feel it’s such a unique quality in a person. I think it speaks a lot about her character.”

Shem agreed, crediting Nicole for bringing his estranged family back together.

“She taught me that there’s good people in the world, that there’s good in people’s hearts,” Shem said.

Shem said above their bed hangs a plaque that exhorts couples to kiss each other good night.

Shem said he now kisses Nicole’s pillow. It breaks his heart when Isabella asks for her mother, but Shem said he comforts Isabella with this explanation.

“She is in our hearts. She is always with us,” Shem said. “And she will always be with us.”

Families light up the library in laser tag party

Shaw Media correspondent Locals might laugh at the thought of laser tag at the local library, thanks to Minooka native and actor Nick Offerman after his spoof of the Minooka Community Calendar last year on the “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” but laser tag has become a regular and well-received program at the Three Rivers Public Library District in Channahon.

“The general idea of running around and essentially breaking all of the library rules creates a draw, as well as the thought of being in the building after hours for an exclusive, free event; it’s a no-brainer,” youth services librarian Lisa Berger said of the monthly laser tag events for teens and tweens.

This weekend, Berger said the library changed some of the rules – normally which allows the activity for youths in fifth to 12th grades – and offered laser tag for children ages five to 12 on Saturday.

Sunday was open to families.

“We did the special weekend to plug the program, and it was a fun start-of-theyear kind of thing. We have had a lot of requests to offer laser tag for other age groups other than the tweens and teens,” Berger said.

Twelve children walked through the

opened at 5:20 p.m. for four families from the Channahon and Minooka area to take to the stacks.

First to arrive was Jamie Fisher and her daughter Mackenzie, 9, and son Alex, 8, of Channahon. Fisher, a first-timer, said her children had played numerous times and had their strategy figured out.

Fisher said she did this for her family.

“This will be a great family bonding activity. My son loves it, and I’m just trying to not injure myself,” Jamie said.

Erin Witcofski of Minooka brought her three sons, one of whom has special needs, which led her to bring him to a safe environment such as the library to play games like his siblings.

“The real reason is because my son, Nathan, has special needs. He isn’t able to go to the laser tag establishments because the lights, noise and unfamiliar environment is too much for him. This is a safe place, and I can also play along with him,” Witcofski said.

Minooka High School District 111 has had more than its share of cancer scares and losses.

From students to teachers to staff members. Three staff members have died from some form of the disease in the past several years – Shawn Capodice, Mike Assaf and, most recently, Mark Smith.

And there are survivors, teachers Trent Bontrager and Sam Pavelka. And students as well.

Minooka High School students, staff and teachers, as well as the community, have become too accustomed to hearing about leukemia, testicular cancer, breast cancer, glioblastoma (brain cancer), Ewings Sarcoma, pancreatic cancers and benign tumors that take over.

It seems as if there are as many kinds of cancers as people and the thought can overwhelm and frighten the most lionhearted of us.

But that’s why it’s so important for the students and faculty at Minooka High School to hold their annual Mini Relay For Life each and every year.

This year’s relay will be from noon to 8:30 p.m. Jan. 15.

MCHS National Honor Society sponsor Donna Engel said students spend a three-day weekend preparing for the event, it means that much to them.

This is the fifth annual NHS-sponsored event, and they’ve raised $40,000 that goes to the American Cancer Society for research and a portion stays right in our community to help families fighting cancer with things such as transportation, wigs and day care.

“The National Honor Society always believes in responding to the needs of the school and the community,” Engel said. “This is our way to fight back, by raising money for research. It’s the only thing we can do.”

If you’ve never attended an event, it will not only bring joy and excitement to your heart but tears to your eyes.

NHS students decorate the halls of central campus in themes, everything from Disney, to talent, to music.

NHS members – numbering 140 – break into teams, and they each do laps around the campus while collecting money for the cause.

The students try to entice more donating with their costumes, their talents and their antics.

The culinary arts students will be selling walking tacos and local business Candy & Corn will be selling goodies – with proceeds from both going to the American Cancer Society, as well.

This year is going to be another rough relay for the school, Engel said.

Last year, they had suffered the loss of Capodice, and not six weeks later, Smith came to Engel to inform her of his brain tumor.

During her speech at last year’s event, Engel told the crowd she would love to see no more cancer at their school or in the community.

“I guess I have to eat those words,” she said.

But the school, the students, the community is not giving up. They will continue their fight to raise funds to bring cancer down.

Smith was a teacher, a coach and an advocate, Engel said, so the relay is a way of standing up to cancer and saying we are not beaten.

Joliet police now have three general-purpose canines and one dedicated for narcotics detection.

A replacement dog for Biaky is part of the department’s budget this year.

The service hours for the records section at the department’s main station, 150 W. Washington St., will be 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Sunday.

There will be no change to the 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. hours of operation for the Joliet Police Far West Annex at 7196 Caton Farm Road.

Will County state’s attorney to host blood drive Thursday

JOLIET – Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow is partnering with Heartland Blood Centers and local mom Jennifer Babec during National Blood Donor Appreciation Month to host a blood drive from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

JOLIET – The Will County Community Health Center teen clinic will be changing its day of operation to Monday starting Feb. 6, according to a Will County Health Department news release.

Hours of operation for the free and confidential walk-in clinic will remain 3 to 6 p.m., but are being moved from Friday to Monday because of feedback the center has received from teens.

By Illinois law, minors ages 12 and older can consent for sexual health services.

The free health services offered to teens at the clinic include family planning, birth control, pregnancy testing and counseling, HIV testing and counseling, and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases.

Homer Township voters can request mail ballot for primary

Will County Clerk Nancy Schultz Voots announced in a news release that residents of Homer Township who are registered voters can request a vote-by-mail ballot for the Feb. 28 Republican primary election any time before 4:30 p.m. Feb. 23.

The first day ballots can be mailed is Jan. 19.

Requesting a vote-by-mail ballot can be done by visiting www.thewillcountyclerk.com and clicking on the “vote by mail” icon in the Quick Links section at the top of the homepage.

The vote-by-mail page provides all the ways to request a ballot.

Once requested, it is the voter’s responsibility to follow up if a ballot is not received.

Will County Sheriff Mike Kelley is announcing the promotion of Dale Santerelli as chief deputy – or warden – of the Will County Adult Detention Facility, according to a sheriff’s office news release.

Santerelli is a 21-year veteran of the sheriff’s office and began his career as a correctional deputy.

He has completed several instructor-level training courses and has educated correctional staff on various detention center topics throughout his career.

He is a graduate of the Northwestern University Center for Public Safety.

Santerelli’s promotion comes after the recent retirement of Chief Deputy Brad Josephson.

Plainfield Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over results released

PLAINFIELD – As part of the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign, Plainfield police were out over the holiday season working to keep drunken drivers off the roads, according to a police department news release.

From Dec. 16 to Jan. 1, Plainfield police arrested three drivers for impaired driving.

In addition, 28 drivers and passengers received citations for not wearing seat belts.

The department reminds the public to never drive impaired by alcohol or drugs.

Metra: Fines double for drivers who disobey crossing gates

Metra is reminding drivers in a news release that as of Jan. 1, the penalties are double for those who try to cross railroad tracks after the grade crossing systems have activated.

In July 2016, Gov. Bruce Rauner signed into law an amendment to the Illinois Vehicle Code that increases fines for drivers who disregard activated railroad gates and warning lights from $250 to $500 for a first offense and from $500 to $1,000 for a second or subsequent offense.

The amendment became law Jan. 1.

The legislation was initiated by Metra last spring as part of a larger initiative to help promote rail safety awareness and eliminate preventable injuries and deaths at highway-rail grade crossings.

JOLIET – Starting in February, the Will County Community Health Center will be offering a special service to day cares and nursery schools that are required to have pediatric exams for children in their programs, according to a Will County Health Department news release.

From 8 to 11 a.m. Wednesday mornings, the health center will be hosting the Special Community Agency Access program.

Day cares and nursery schools will be able to bring children to the health center by appointment or on a walk-in basis for pediatric exams.

Exams will be available on a sliding fee scale, and many forms of public insurance, such as Medicaid and Medicare, will be accepted, as will private insurance.

The first day of operation for the program will be Feb. 22.

Tracking snow: Springfield starts testing road-condition software

The (Springfield) State Journal-Register SPRINGFIELD – Phil Jones, a snow inspector for the city of Springfield, drove a public works pickup down Laurel Street Thursday morning.

After a few blocks, he pulled over and grabbed the laptop off the mount on the dashboard.

Jones clicked the stretch he’d just inspected on a map of city streets, showing blue for “uninvestigated,” and switched it to orange for “patches of ice and snow.”

“The main objective is clear curb to curb, but right now, I say patches of ice and snow because this whole lane here is snow,” he said, pointing to the outer lane of the street. “I put that in, and then once I save it, this turns orange.”

Jones is trying out a new software program that allows inspectors to track road conditions during winter storms in close-to-real time.

Engineers from the public works and information technology departments built the program that they hope will make the snow-removal process more efficient and provide better information to the public during snowstorms.

The program and accompanying map are in testing phases, according to Public Works Director Mark Mahoney, so the information is only available on the city’s internal system. But the goal is to put the map on the city’s website by next winter.

Mahoney discussed snow- and ice-removal operations, which involve 110 employees, with the Springfield City Council in December. Aldermen told him they had received dozens of phone calls the weekend before asking why residents’ ice-covered streets hadn’t been plowed.

Mahoney doesn’t think the new system will cut down on the number of calls, but it might provide better information.

“Ultimately it’s about providing more detailed information, more quickly, to the public,” Mahoney said.

Less paperwork

The streets glowing blue, orange, yellow, red or green on the map help Jones decide where to send the four snowplow drivers in the district he covers, which stretches from Clear Lake Avenue to North Dirksen, and MacArthur Boulevard from South Grand to North Grand avenues.

Red means covered in ice or snow, while green is clear. Yellow shows roads that are tolerable or as good as they can get, and orange shows sections that need more work.

Once the other thoroughfares and worrisome sections of road are clear in his district, Jones said he’ll send a driver back to clear the orange sections on Laurel.

Next to the laptop in Jones’ truck is a thin blue binder, with photocopied sheets listing the routes in his district.

When he hands off his district to the night snow boss around 7 p.m., Jones usually sits with his counterpart and goes through the binder page-by-page, giving updates on the day’s work.

Using the new program, the communication will be much different.

“It’s less paperwork,” he said. “If I had to leave early for whatever reason and was not able to communicate with my other snow boss for night shift, it’s right there on the computer for him.”

The paper-based system is what Riley Potts, a former snow boss and sewer engineering technician for the city, hopes the program will move the city away from.

Potts began developing the program in 2013 after growing frustrated with the slow process.

The Associated Press NEW YORK – Nat Hentoff, an eclectic columnist, critic, novelist and agitator dedicated to music, free expression and defying the party line, died Saturday at age 91. His son, Tom Hentoff, said his father died from natural causes at his Manhattan apartment.

Schooled in the classics and the stories he heard from Duke Ellington and other jazz greats, Nat Hentoff enjoyed a diverse and iconoclastic career, basking in “the freedom to be infuriating on a myriad of subjects.”

He was a bearded, scholarly figure, a kind of secular rabbi, as likely to write a column about fiddler Bob Wills as a dissection of the Patriot Act, to have his name appear in the liberal Village Voice as the far-right WorldNetDaily.

“Blues for Charles Darwin” and the memoirs “Boston Boy” and “Speaking Freely.”

The documentary “The Pleasures of Being Out of Step: Notes on the Life of Nat Hentoff” was released in 2014.

Jazz was his first love, but Hentoff was an early admirer of Bob Dylan, first hearing the then-unknown singer at a Greenwich Village club in 1961 and getting on well enough with him to write liner notes two years later for Dylan’s landmark second album, “The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan.”

“The irrepressible reality of Bob Dylan is a compound of spontaneity, candor, slicing wit and an uncommonly perceptive eye and ear for the way many of us constrict our capacity for living while a few of us don’t,” Hentoff wrote.

treated Dylan like a prophet or the latest teen fad, Hentoff asked well-informed questions that were (usually) answered in kind by the cryptic star. Hentoff also was willing to be Dylan’s partner in improvisation. A 1966 Playboy interview, he later revealed, had been made up from scratch after Dylan rejected the first conversation that was supposed to be published by the magazine.

As a columnist, Hentoff focused tirelessly on the Constitution and what he saw as a bipartisan mission to undermine it. Senate to vote on plan to end budget impasse

SPRINGFIELD – A plan to end a twoyear Illinois budget standoff negotiated in the Senate – which likely includes an income tax increase as well as items on Gov. Bruce Rauner’s agenda – could get a vote in Springfield as early as Monday, a leading Republican senator said Sunday.

The deal was still shaping up over the weekend after weeks of talks between Democratic Senate President John Cullerton and GOP Leader Christine Radogno, said Sen. Pamela Althoff, a Republican from McHenry.

While it would mark a significant step toward smashing the logjam on a state spending plan between Republican Rauner and Democratic legislative leaders, there are only two work days remaining for the current General Assembly – no time to seek a House vote.

But it could position the Senate as distinct in what has largely been a test of wills between the billionaire governor and Chicago Democrat Michael Madigan, house speaker for three decades. Rauner often invokes Madigan’s

Durbin hesitant on some Trump Cabinet nominees

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin is expressing concern about several of President-elect Donald Trump’s cabinet picks, noting that overall it is a “very rich” group.

Durbin told the State Journal-Register in Springfield that he likely will support Elaine Chao, Trump’s nominee to be secretary of transportation, and has heard good things about retired Marine Gen. James Mattis, Trump’s pick for secretary of defense.

However, he is skeptical about former Texas Gov. Rick Perry, Trump’s choice to lead the Department of Energy. Durbin said he doesn’t understand how Perry could administer a department he has said he wants to close.

Durbin said he is unsure about Senate colleague Jeff Sessions of Alabama, who is Trump’s choice for attorney general.

He said they agree on the need for criminal justice reform. But Durbin said

Two mobile stroke units poised to start operating

WINFIELD – Two suburban Chicago hospitals plan to launch mobile units this year that are designed to quickly get lifesaving treatment to stroke victims.

The Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital and Rush University Medical Center mobile stroke units will be the first of their kind in the Chicago area.

The ambulances will carry CT scanners, video-conferencing equipment and clot-dissolving medication that can restore blood flow.

“I think this will be the standard of care as time goes by. It’s a phenomenal technology to have,” Dr. Harish Shownkeen, medical director for stroke and neurovascular medicine at Central DuPage, told the Daily Herald. “The treatment hasn’t changed; it’s the initiating of the treatment that has made the quantum leap.”

Doctors said the mobile units are valuable because they allow treatment to begin sooner, making a huge difference in patients’ recoveries.

“Time really is of the essence,” said Dr. James Conners, section head of cerebro-

And it might include a plan to borrow billions of dollars to pay down overdue bills – which topped $11 billion on Friday – to vendors and service providers.

Rauner spokeswoman Catherine Kelly did not comment Sunday. On Friday, the governor told reporters in

Carbondale he knew few of the details but said, “I’m optimistic that Democrats and Republicans will continue to negotiate in good faith to come up with changes to our system so it’s not broken anymore.”

The refusal to budge on either side has forced Illinois to limp along for two years without an approved spending plan. Government has functioned largely on the strength of court-ordered spending for social services and lawmakers’ piecemeal appropriation action.

But 1 million or more people relying on mental health, substance abuse treatment or domestic violence prevention funded with state dollars had been cut off.

Rauner’s budget office predicts a $5.3 billion deficit June 30, the end of the fiscal year, in addition to the mountain of past-due bills.

Joliet man in custody after breaching checkpoint at O’Hare

CHICAGO – Chicago police said a man is in custody after breaching a security checkpoint at O’Hare International Airport.

Authorities said the man breached a checkpoint early Sunday in the airport’s Terminal 3, and tried to board an aircraft.

When police officers prevented him from doing so, the man attacked the officers, striking them several times.

Authorities said after being taken into custody the man was taken to Resurrection Medical Center for a mental health evaluation. The incident occurred as Chicago police continued to provide

Child porn producer gets 80-year sentence

EDWARDSVILLE – An 80-year prison sentence has been handed a southern Illinois man who pleaded guilty to child pornography and predatory criminal sexual assault.

David J. Von Bergen of Godfrey was arrested in September 2014 when police served a search warrant on his home.

Police said Von Bergen was downloading child pornography on his computer at the time of his arrest.

Authorities said a search of the computer turned up two videos made by the 36-yearold Von Bergen depicting sexual acts between him and two sisters, ages 7 and 8.

Madison County Circuit Judge Neil Schroeder on Friday sentenced Von Bergen to 25 years on each of the two counts of predatory criminal sexual assault. Von Bergen received 15 years for each of the child pornography charges.

Von Bergen must serve 57 years before he is eligible for parole.

Agent who questioned Hussein leads Fla. case

FORTLAUDERDALE,Fla.– The FBI agent who interrogated Saddam Hussein alone for months after the former Iraqi leader’s capture is now leading the investigation into the Florida airport shooting rampage blamed on an Iraq war veteran.

George Piro, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Miami field office, was Saddam’s sole interrogator beginning in January 2004. In previous interviews, Piro has said Saddam did not know his true identity – the Iraqi leader called him “Mr. George” – and that he posed as a high-level envoy who answered directly to then-President George W. Bush.

Now the 49-year-old Piro, a native of Beirut, Lebanon, fluent in Arabic and Assyrian, is in charge of the FBI investigation into the shooting at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport that left five people dead and six wounded. Federal prosecutors have charged Esteban Santiago, 26, with airport violence and firearms offenses that could bring the death penalty if he is convicted.

In announcing the charges filed Saturday, Piro said his thoughts are with the victims and their families.

“I want to ensure these families that law enforcement is working tirelessly in order to ensure justice is served,” he said.

Piro, an FBI agent since 1999, moved with his family from Lebanon to California’s San Joaquin Valley as a teenager. After high school he enlisted in the Air Force, then became a police officer for a decade in Ceres, California, followed by a job as an investigator in the local prosecutor’s office.

Once he joined the FBI in Phoenix, Piro was one of only a handful of Arabic-speaking agents – a group that suddenly

Eventually, Piro said Saddam confirmed that Iraq did not have weapons of mass destruction before the U.S. invasion but might seek them in the future to deter Iran and other threats. Saddam also denied any links to al-Qaida and Osama bin Laden, Piro has said.

Saddam also liked to brag about how he escaped U.S. airstrikes and capture, Piro said.

“What he wanted to really illustrate is ... how he was able to outsmart us,” Piro told “60 Minutes.” “He got rid of his

normal vehicles. He got rid of the protective detail that he traveled with, really just to change his signature.”

Saddam was later tried and executed by hanging in December 2006.

Santiago, the airport shooting suspect, also served in Iraq in 2010 with the Puerto Rico National Guard as part of an engineering battalion, guard officials said. Santiago later served in the Army Reserves and Alaska National Guard.

After Iraq, Piro moved on to top FBI counterterrorism jobs in Washington, including a White House position involving high-value detainee interrogation that works with various intelligence agencies.

Since taking the top Miami FBI job, Piro has overseen work in more domestic areas such as health care fraud, identity theft and tax fraud, Ponzi schemes and mortgage fraud – all areas where South Florida is among the nation’s leaders. Bank robberies, violent street gangs, public corruption and smuggling of humans and drugs round out much of the work for the Miami office’s estimated 1,000 agents and employees.

‘La La Land,’ ‘Moonlight’ top Golden Globes

The Associated Press “La La Land” steamrolled through a Jimmy Fallon-hosted Golden Globes that mixed the expected, Champagne-sipping Hollywood celebration with often-voiced concern over president-elect Donald Trump.

Although “La La Land” dominated with seven awards, including best motion picture, comedy or musical, the night’s final award went to Barry Jenkins’ tender coming of age drama “Moonlight.” Its sole award was for best motion picture, drama.

But Meryl Streep, the Cecil B. DeMille Award honoree, supplied Sunday evening’s most striking moment: a rebuke to Trump that stirred the Beverly Hilton Hotel crowd. Streep, who spoke at the Democratic National Convention, called the president-elect’s mocking of a disabled reporter the year’s performance that most “stunned her.”

Arguing for the multinational makeup of Hollywood, Streep listed off the far-flung homes of stars from Dev Patel to Ryan Gosling.

“Hollywood is crawling with outsiders and foreigners and if you kick them all out, you’ll have nothing to watch but football and mixed martial arts, which are not the arts,” Streep said to loud applause.

Damien Chazelle’s Los Angeles musical “La La Land” came in with a leading seven nominations, and won everything it was nominated for, including best film, musical or comedy. Chazelle won both best director and best screenplay. Gosling won best actor in a comedy or musical, as did Emma Stone for

In one of the evening’s more emotional acceptance speeches, Gosling dedicated his award to the late brother of his partner, Eva Mendes.

“While I was singing and dancing and playing piano and having one of the best experiences I’ve ever had on a film, my lady was raising our daughter, pregnant with our second and trying to help her brother fight his battle with cancer,” said Gosling, referring to Juan Carlos Mendes.

The Beverly Hills, California, ceremony got off to a rocky start, with a broken teleprompter initially froze Fallon.

“Cut to Justin Timberlake, please,” implored a desperately improvising Fallon. It was the second fiasco for Globes producer Dick Clark Productions, which presented the infamous Mariah Carey flub on New Year’s Eve. The “Tonight Show” host started the show with a cold open ode to “La La Land” in a lavish sketch more typical of the Academy Awards than the Globes.

Fallon did a version of the film’s opening dance scene, with starry cameos from Timberlake, previous Globes host Tina Fey, Amy Adams and the white Ford Bronco of “The People v. O.J.

Simpson.”

In a more truncated monologue, Fallon’s sharpest barbs weren’t directed at the stars in the room (as was the style of frequent host Ricky Gervais) but president-elect Trump. He compared Trump to the belligerent teenage king Joffrey of “Games of Thrones.” His first line (at least once the teleprompter was up) was introducing the Globes as “one of the few places left where America still honors the popular vote.”

That, however, isn’t quite true. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, a collection of 85 members, has its own methods of selecting winners. Best supporting actress winner Viola Davis, the co-star of Denzel Washington’s August Wilson adaptation “Fences,” alluded to the group’s reputation for being wined and dined.

“I took all the pictures, went to luncheon,” said Davis, to knowing chuckles through the ballroom, as she clutched her award. “But it’s right on time.”

Davis continued what appears to be a certain path to the Oscar. Another favorite, Casey Affleck, also padded his favorite status. The “Manchester by the Sea” star took best actor.

Coming a year after a second-straight of OscarsSoWhite protests, the night was notable for the widespread diversity of its winners, in film and TV. Donald Glover’s “Atlanta” won best comedy series over heavyweights like “Veep” and “Transparent,” and Glover later added best actor in a comedy. Glover looked visibly surprised.

“I really want to thank Atlanta and all the black folks in Atlanta,” said Glover. “I couldn’t be here without Atlanta.”

Navy, Trump plan biggest fleet expansion since Cold War

The Associated Press BATH, Maine – With President-elect Donald Trump demanding more ships, the Navy is proposing the biggest shipbuilding boom since the end of the Cold War to meet threats from a resurgent Russia and saber-rattling China.

The Navy’s 355-ship proposal released last month is even larger than what the Republican Trump had promoted on the campaign trail, providing a potential boost to shipyards that have struggled because budget caps that have limited money funding for ships.

At Maine’s Bath Iron Works, workers worried about the future want to build more ships but wonder where the billions of dollars will come from.

“Whether Congress and the government can actually fund it, is a whole

other ball game,” said Rich Nolan, president of the shipyard’s largest union.

Boosting shipbuilding to meet the Navy’s 355-ship goal could require an additional $5 billion to $5.5 billion in annual spending in the Navy’s 30-year projection, according to an estimate by naval analyst Ronald O’Rourke at the Congressional Research Service.

The Navy’s revised Force Structure Assessment calls for adding another 47 ships including an aircraft carrier built in Virginia, 16 large surface warships built in Maine and Mississippi, and 18 attack submarines built in Connecticut, Rhode Island and Virginia. It also calls for more amphibious assault ships, expeditionary transfer docks and support ships.

shorter deployments, and for the ships, which would have more down time for maintenance, said Matthew Paxton, president of the Shipbuilders Council of America, which represents most of the major Navy shipbuilders.

“Russia and China are going to continue to build up their navies,” he said.

“The complexities aren’t going to get any easier. The Navy, more than any of the services, is our forward presence.

We’re going to need this Navy.”

Many defense analysts agree that military capabilities have been degraded in recent years, especially when it comes to warships, aircraft and tanks.

The key is finding a way to increase Navy shipbuilding to achieve defense and economic gains “in a fiscally responsible way that does not pass the bill along to our children,” said independent Sen. Angus King of Maine, a member of the Armed Services Com-

mittee.

Even when Trump takes office, no one envisions a return to the heady days during the Cold War when workers were wiring, welding, grinding, pounding and plumbing ships at a furious pace to meet President Ronald Reagan’s audacious goal of a 600 ship Navy.

The Navy currently has 274 deployable battle force ships, far short of its old goal of 308 ships.

Lawrence J. Korb, a retired naval officer and former assistant defense secretary under Reagan, said the Navy’s request isn’t realistic unless the Trump administration is willing to take the budget “to levels we’ve never seen.”

“You never have enough money to buy a perfect defense. You have to make trade-offs,” said Korb, senior fellow at the Center for American Progress.

Rodgers works Hail Mary magic, Packers beat Giants to advance

GREEN BAY, Wisconsin – Aaron Rodgers, master of the Hail Mary pass, struck again in another big moment.

Rodgers overcame a sluggish start and finished with four touchdown passes, including a momentum-swinging 42-yard heave to Randall Cobb at the end of the second quarter, to lead the Green Bay Packers to a 38-13 win Sunday over the New York Giants in an NFC wild-card game.

The Packers move on to face the Dallas Cowboys in the divisional round next week.

Rodgers was 25 of 40 for 362 yards, continuing a remarkable run of quarterback play that helped the Packers win their final six games of the regular season to take the NFC North. Cobb finished with five receptions for 116 yards and three scores.

For much of the first half, the Giants’ defense flustered the two-time NFL MVP. They got pressure on Rodgers and the secondary blanketed the Packers’ talented receiving corps , and a few boos even rained down from the stands after New York built a 6-0 lead on two field goals by Robbie Gould.

As it turned out, Rodgers was just getting started.

“We hit a Hail Mary. That got us going,” Rodgers said.

Green Bay scored two touchdowns in the final 2:20 of the second quarter, punctuated by another remarkable desperation pass by Rodgers.

Cobb somehow got behind three defensive backs near the back of the end zone to haul in the pass, getting both feet down before falling out of bounds.

The Giants looked stunned, just as the Detroit Lions and Arizona Cardinals looked last season after Rodgers pulled off similar feats.

“Davante (Adams) made a bunch of plays,” Rodgers said. “And Randall Cobb, who this offense has been missing for a long time. We’re better with 18 on the field, and he showed it tonight.”

Rodgers and Cobb weren’t done.

They connected again on a 30yard touchdown pass late in the third

quarter for a 21-13 lead. That score answered a Giants’ scoring drive that briefly cut the deficit to one.

“Second half we got back to some rhythm throws, and I was getting better on my timing, getting the ball out of my hand quickly,” Rodgers said.

PITTSBURGH – Injuries forced Ben Roethlisberger, Antonio Brown and Le’Veon Bell to wait three seasons for the chance to run onto the field together in the playoffs. The wait for the Pittsburgh Steelers’ “Big Three” to do it again won’t be nearly as long.

Bell ran for a franchise postseason record 167 yards and two scores, Brown caught five passes for 124 yards and a pair of first-quarter touchdowns from Roethlisberger as the Steelers overwhelmed the beaten-up and mistake-prone Miami Dolphins, 30-12, on Sunday.

Pittsburgh (12-5) ran off its eighth straight victory by avenging a whipping by the Dolphins (10-7) in mid-October to set up a visit to AFC West champion Kansas City (12-4) next Sunday. The Steelers rolled by the Chiefs, 43-14, on Oct. 2.

Bell missed the playoffs each of the past two seasons with knee injuries, and Brown sat out a divisional-round playoff loss to Denver a year ago because of a concussion. They played as if trying to make up for lost time.

The Dolphins tried to hype themselves up by running around in shirt sleeves in the single-digit wind chill during warmups. Steelers linebacker Ryan Shazier did them one better, racing around shirtless – as if to send a message that his team is plenty comfortable playing this time of year.

It sure looked like it.

The Steelers scored on their first three possessions, and Miami’s playoff victory drought was well on its way to 17 years and counting.

Moore returned just minutes after sitting dazed on the turf and completed 29 of 36 passes for 289 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

But he fumbled twice with the ball in Steelers territory and the game still in doubt.

The first fumble, caused by an unblocked James Harrison, ended a Miami drive at the Pittsburgh 13.

The second, when Moore collided with running back Jay Ajayi, set up a Chris Boswell field goal that pushed Pittsburgh’s lead to 23-6 midway through the third quarter.

Shazier stepped in front of Moore’s pass on Miami’s next possession, and when Bell darted it from 8 yards, the Steelers were up, 30-6.

Packers: Green Bay will play at Dallas on Sunday in a rematch of a Week 6 game at Lambeau Field. The Cowboys won, 30-16. The divisional round will feature four rematches from the regular season for the first time in six years.

Brown turned a pair of short passes into long scores. The first, a 50yard sprint down the left sideline, came after Brown patiently waited for tight end Jesse James to provide the one block he needed. The second, a crossing pattern Brown turned into a 62-yard touchdown, ended with the All-Pro receiver pointing at a Miami defender as he crossed the goal line to put the Steelers up, 14-0, before the game was 10 minutes old.

Matt Moore, making the first playoff start of his decadelong career with Ryan Tannehill still sidelined by a sprained knee, played on despite taking a helmet-to-chin shot from Pittsburgh linebacker Bud Dupree in the second quarter.

The Dolphins hardly looked like the team that pushed around the Steelers three months ago, when Ajayi ran for 204 yards and two scores. That set the stage for Miami’s 9-2 finish to send the franchise to the playoffs for the first time since 2008.

“Last time we felt like we didn’t play well,” Bell said. “Those guys got after us; they jumped on us early.”

There was no running room for Ajayi this time. He was held to 33 yards on 16 carries, forcing the Dolphins to rely on Moore and a defense incapable of handling the Steelers.

“The defense played great today, stopping their run game, making it tough on (Ajayi) on their side, he’s a great runner,” Bell added. “On the other side, we wanted to control the ball, score some touchdowns, and we did our job today.”

After Brown controlled the first quarter, Bell dominated the second.

He carried 10 straight times during an 83-yard touchdown drive as Pittsburgh showcased the varied ways it can beat you.

It’s a healthy blueprint they’ll take to Kansas City next weekend.

Injuries: Miami: The Dolphins badly missed cornerback Byron Maxwell (ankle), out a third straight game.

Miami held Brown to four receptions for 39 yards in October, but he topped that total before the game was three minutes old.

Pittsburgh: The Steelers avoided any major concerns heading to the divisional round, although tight end Ladarius Green (concussion) was inactive for a third straight week.

Up next: Steelers: Pittsburgh’s only playoff visit to Kansas City came in 1993, a loss to the Joe Montana-led Chiefs, 27-24, in overtime.

Minooka, Plainfield East need football coaches

dgoss@shawmedia.com The Southwest Prairie Conference will have two new head football coaches for the 2017 season.

Their identities are yet to be determined.

The jobs at Minooka, where Paul Forsythe has been the head coach for five years, and at Plainfield East, where Mike Romeli has been in charge for seven years, have been posted as the two schools begin the search.

Forsythe, a Joliet Central graduate and a wide receiver during his playing days, has been the head coach at Minooka since 2012.

His five teams finished with an overall record of 20-26 and made one playoff appearance, in 2015. The Indians were 4-5 in 2012 and followed that with seasons of 3-6, 4-5, 5-5 and 4-5 under Forsythe.

Asked about not returning, Forsythe declined comment. “I have nothing to say on the record about that,” he said.

Attempts to contact Minooka athletic director Bob Tyrell were unsuccessful.

Meanwhile, Romeli, 32, said he has stepped down for family reasons.

“My wife and I have a little baby on the way, our first, and my wife works a lot, too,” said Romeli, who commutes daily from his home in Chicago to Plainfield East. “It’s a timing thing. I’ll be putting in a lot more family time.

“But I do feel I have a lot to offer and would like to get back into coaching sometime in the future. I really enjoy it.”

A dean at East, Romeli posted a 25-40 overall record, and his teams made the playoffs in 2013, when the

Bengals finished 6-4, and 2014, when they were 7-3. East was 2-7 last fall.

“I had a long meeting with our

principal [Joe O’Brien] about the type of candidate our team should hire,” Romeli said. “Joe is an athletic guy, which is good. I really feel the next guy is going to be in a good situation. We have some talent in the program. The opportunity is there for somebody to come in and make the playoffs right away.”

Romeli said making the first two playoff appearances in school history was a proud accomplishment, but there is more to coaching.

“The thing that goes a little unnoticed but is huge is the number of kids we coached who went on and did great things beyond high school, whether it’s in college, in the military, in the community or in the business world,” Romeli said. “I definitely feel like we made some young men into men over the years. That’s a great tribute to me and to all of those who were on our staff the last seven years.”

Romeli, who played football at Marian Catholic and Eastern Michigan, was an undergraduate assistant at Eastern Michigan and coached under Dave Matteo at Marian Catholic for a year before arriving at East.

He also has been an assistant track coach for the Bengals the past five years, coaching the shot put and discus events.

“In three of the five years, we had a state qualifier,” he said. “Of course, it helps when you have a kid [Tyler Lancaster] who is a starting defensive tackle at Northwestern, and another defensive lineman [Daniel Jackson] who is getting some playing time at Western Michigan. Jackson got to the Cotton Bowl this year, which was great.”

The Ohio State freshman, a 2015 Minooka graduate, took time out from his Division I college schedule with the Buckeyes to play for the U.S. Junior National team in the prestigious International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship, which began Dec. 26 and ended Thursday, and was played in Montreal and Toronto.

The Americans went 9-0 in the competition and claimed the gold medal with a 5-4 shootout victory over Canada. The USA also went to a shootout in the semifinals, where it beat Russia, 4-3.

Laczynski, a forward and the only USA roster member from Illinois, scored one goal and had one assist in the tournament. He finished at plus-2 on the charts.

The 10-nation World Junior Championship features the world’s top men’s players younger than 20 years of age. The USA previously won gold medals in 2004, 2010 and 2013.

It came as no surprise that Laczynski, given his background, made the USA roster, especially after he showed well late last summer in the World Junior Evaluation Camp run by USA Hockey in Plymouth, Michigan. Earlier last summer, the Philadelphia Flyers made him a sixth-round selection, the 169th overall pick, in the NHL draft. He also has played a couple of seasons in the USHL, the top Junior A league in the nation.

So far at Ohio State, which got off to a 9-3-4 start, Laczynski has played in 15 games and had six goals and 16 assists for a team-best 22 points. Two of his goals were game-winners.

His dream to play in the NHL is on track.

Laczynski, USA win gold at World Junior Championship

Minooka graduate and Shorewood native Tanner Laczynski, who was selected by the Philadelphia Flyers in the sixth round of the recent NHL draft and is playing college hockey at Ohio State, was a member of the USA team that won the gold medal last week in the World Junior Championship tournament at Montreal and Toronto.

The Indians slipped to 3-6 in 2013. After the season, Michaelsen relinquished the coaching reins and became the Lemont principal. Enter Bret Kooi.

Kooi, whose résumé includes Class 8A state titles at Lockport in 2002 and 2003, took his first Lemont team to the title game in 2014, where the Indians finished second with a 13-1 record.

They went 9-2 in 2015 and 11-1 in 2016 under his guidance. That works out to a 33-4 record, an .892 mark.

It is fitting that Michaelsen and Kooi have been announced as inductees with the Class of 2017 for the Illinois High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame. The induction banquet is scheduled for April 1 at the Hilton Garden in Champaign.

QUIGLEY IN TURKEY

Allie Quigley (Joliet Catholic

Academy) is 30 years old now, but her game shows no signs of slowing down.

A standout guard and two-time WNBA Sixth Woman of the Year with the Chicago Sky, Quigley is playing her second season with Fenerbahce in Istanbul, Turkey. Fenerbahce is 9-1 in the Turkish League and 5-1 in the Euroleague, the premiere league in Europe. Quigley has been a key.

In the six Euroleague games, she is averaging 32.3 minutes, 16.5 points, 2.3 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 1.0 steals.

She is shooting .500 from the field and .909 (20 of 22) from the free-throw line.

In the 10 Turkish League games, she is averaging 27.8 minutes, 14.8 points, 2.9 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.0 steals. She is shooting .535 from the floor, .366 from 3-point range and .964 (27 of 28) from the line.

Combining the two leagues, Quigley is 47 of 50 from the foul line, a .940

mark.

DUCHENE SUSPENSION

Oakland Athletics minor league pitcher Kevin Duchene (JCA) this offseason received a 50-game suspension after testing positive for a banned substance.

He will begin serving his suspension once the Arizona League schedule begins in June, according to an mlb.com report.

The A’s selected Duchene in the fifth round of the 2015 draft out of Illinois. He and fellow lefty Tyler Jay (Lemont), who was the No. 6 overall pick that year by the Minnesota Twins, provided the Illini with two of the best left-handed pitchers in the nation.

Hartman leads Hawks to win against Predators

The Associated Press CHICAGO – Ryan Hartman scored off a goalmouth scramble in the third period and tacked on two empty-netters, helping the Blackhawks beat the banged-up Nashville Predators, 5-2, on Sunday night.

Artemi Panarin and Niklas Hjalmarsson also scored for the Hawks, who have won the first three of a fourgame homestand. Patrick Kane added three assists, running his team-best total to 32 in 43 games, and Corey Crawford made 25 saves.

Hartman was credited with his eighth of the season when Richard Panik’s shot created a scrum in front of the net, and the referees ruled the puck crossed the line before the goal was dislodged. It looked as if the puck might have gone off Hartman’s left hand while he battled Nashville defenseman Yannick Weber for position.

The Predators pulled Pekka Rinne for an extra attacker with 1:39 left, and Hartman added two more goals for his first career hat trick. The big night for the rookie, who’s from West Dundee, moved him into fifth on the team with 10 goals.

Nashville lost for the third time in four games. Mattias Ekholm and Austin Watson scored for the Predators, and Rinne finished with 26 stops.

The Predators played without defenseman P.K. Subban and forwards James Neal, Colin Wilson and Viktor

Arvidsson. Subban has been out since Dec. 15 with an upper-body injury, and Neal was placed on injured reserve Saturday with an upper-body injury.

Arvidsson missed his second straight game with an upper-body injury, and Wilson was inactive after he left Fri-

day’s 2-1 loss at Florida with a lower-body injury.

But Nashville was in position to possibly steal one on the road before Hartman’s closing flurry. The Predators tied it at 2 early in the third when Mike Fisher’s shot got past Crawford and went off the post before Watson poked it in.

Defenseman Ryan Ellis had a shot go off the right post about 51/2 minutes into the third, and the Predators had a couple more prime scoring opportunities in the final period.

The Hawks jumped in front in the first when Kane skated into the middle of the Nashville zone and passed it over to Panarin, who drove a one-timer over Rinne’s right shoulder from the outside of the left circle at 7:45.

Panarin, who also scored in Friday night’s 2-1 win against Carolina, nearly picked up a second goal in the second, but Rinne got over for a terrific left pad save. The Russian winger has 20 points in his last 18 games.

Nashville bounced right back after Panarin’s 17th of the season, tying it at 1 just 45 seconds later. Fisher made a nice pass to Ekholm, who beat Crawford from the left circle for his second goal of the season.

No. 20 Purdue ends No. 13 Wisconsin’s 9-game winning streak WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Caleb Swanigan and No. 20 Purdue beat No. 13 Wisconsin at its own game Sunday.

The Boilermakers played better defense, were more efficient on offense and even bested the Badgers above the rim.

Swanigan scored 18 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, but it was Purdue’s disciplined defenders that finally created an obstacle the Badgers couldn’t overcome in a 66-55 victory.

Wisconsin had won nine straight.

“We felt we could play really good defense against them because of the way we matched up with them,” Swanigan said. “We wanted them to shoot over our size all night.”

The Boilermakers (14-3, 3-1) certainly made it difficult on the Badgers, holding them 39.0 percent shooting and a dismal 2 of 14 on 3-pointers. The 3s made and percentage were season lows.

Plus, Purdue had a 34-22 rebounding edge against one of the nation’s best in that category.

To coach Matt Painter, the numbers looked picture perfect.

The Boilermakers have won nine of 10 and three straight in the series – matching the school’s longest winning streak against the Badgers (13-3, 2-1) in eight years. For now, it also puts them on top of the conference standings.

Ethan Happ had 17 points and five rebounds for Wisconsin and Nigel Hayes added 10, but without more help they couldn’t keep the score close.

Wildcats (13-4, 2-2 Big Ten), who also got 13 points from Dererk Pardon.

Tai Webster scored 17 points to lead the Huskers (9-7, 3-1), who lost for the first time in five games.

Northwestern made its first five 3s of the second half, with Law hitting one to give the Wildcats a 56-50 lead.

The Huskers got no closer than five points in the last six minutes.

WILDCATS 74, CORNHUSKERS 66: At Lincoln, Nebraska, Northwestern came to Nebraska off two straight losses and went into halftime at Pinnacle Bank Arena on the wrong end of a dizzying 14-0 run that wiped out its double-digit lead.

The Wildcats were tough enough Sunday, winning 74-66 against a Nebraska team that started the day alone in first place in the Big Ten. Scottie Lindsey scored 15 of his 19 points in the second half, and Northwestern withstood the run that stretched to 16-0 early in the second half.

KAPALUA, Hawaii – Justin Thomas had to sweat it out more than he wanted to enjoy that view down the 18th hole Sunday at Kapalua.

Thomas had a five-shot lead with five holes to play when he was caught in a battle with Hideki Matsuyama down the stretch in the SBS Tournament of Champions. Thomas responded with a defining shot in his young career, an 8-iron approach he ripped from 214 yards to 3 feet on the 17th.

Matsuyama, one shot behind and needing birdie to stay in the game, ran his 30-foot putt about 8 feet by the hole and three-putted for bogey. Thomas knocked in his short putt for a threeshot lead, and he went on to another birdie for a 4-under-par 69 and a threeshot victory.

Thomas won for the second time this season, and third time in his career. His other two PGA Tour titles were at the CIMB Classic in Malaysia.

Matsuyama holed a tough flop shot on the 14th for eagle, and then Thomas hooked a 4-iron into the hazard on the par-5 15th and made double bogey. Matsuyama had a chance to tie him until narrowly missing a 10-foot birdie on the 16th. The 24-year-old from Japan closed with a 70.

Thomas is the only player to beat Matsuyama over the past three months.

In his past six tournaments worldwide, Matsuyama had four victories and a pair of runner-up finishes – both to Thomas, in Kuala Lumpur and Kapalua.

Thomas, who finished at 22-under 270, is the first multiple winner on the PGA Tour in a season that began in October. He moves to No. 12 in the world, a big victory that squarely moves him into the conversation of a growing list of young stars in golf.

All he could think about was next year.

“It changes things going forward because I know I’m coming back here,”

Thomas started the final round with a two-shot lead, and no one got closer until his blunder on the 15th. One of the longest hitters in golf with his slight build, Thomas really didn’t miss a shot until the ninth hole, and that’s when he got a huge break.

With the wind stiff and in his face, he got quick with his driver and hit a snap-hook into the knee-high weeds left of the fairway. He hit a provisional for a lost ball and was about ready to abandon the search when a TV spotter was summoned to give an indication where it went. They found the ball, and it was sitting up a few inches above the roots, allowing Thomas to at least hack out onto the fairway.

He followed with a 3-wood onto the green for a two-putt par after starting with a shot that made double bogey appear likely.

Thomas made a 10-foot birdie putt on the 13th for a five-shot lead and appeared to have the tournament in hand. But then Matsuyama answered with his flop shot for eagle. Thomas, haunted by poor shots on the 15th hole in the previous two rounds, picked the wrong time to try to atone for it.

He had left an 8-iron well out to the right, below the elevated green. This time, with a strong wind out of the left, he overcompensated with a 4-iron and went into the hazard. After a penalty drop, he failed to reach the green, chipped up to 8 feet and missed to walk

CHEYENNE, Wyo. – The market for a peculiar type of clay is looking up thanks to improved prospects for oil and gas drilling and to cat owners who use the stuff to soak up their pets’ business.

More than 90 percent of all bentonite mined in the U.S. and almost half worldwide comes from beds of ancient volcanic ash in Wyoming. Some call bentonite the mineral of 1,000 uses: It clarifies wine and other alcoholic beverages, forms an impervious liner to keep landfills from leaking, removes ink during paper recycling, and goes into a slew of homeopathic remedies.

But two of the biggest uses are in kitty litter and drilling mud, the goop pumped down oil and gas wells during drilling to keep the bit cool and carry cuttings to the surface.

As the oil and gas industry’s fortunes rise and fall, so can bentonite’s.

During the past two years, bentonite mining companies that do a lot of business with the oilfield services industry suffered while the oil and gas industry experienced its worst slump in 20 years or more.

One study found women who were undergoing fertility treatment and were part of a support or therapy group had a 54 percent conception rate, while those who were not in a support group had a 20 percent conception rate.

Note men are not immune to the negative aspects of stress. Men who have experienced more than two stressful life events have been found to have lower sperm concentration, motility and morphology.

It would be easy for me to tell you: “Stress less.” But no one knows your typical life stressors better than you. My advice is threefold. One, turn to your husband for support.

The two of you are in this together, after all, and he’s in the best position to understand what you’re going through. Second, develop some coping skills through relaxation techniques, meditation or simply going for a walk within nature. Hearing the sounds of the waves as you walk along the beach, listening to the sounds of birds or enjoying the view from a mountain can provide a calming perspective to your everyday life.

And three, if you find yourself still unable to become pregnant, consult a fertility specialist. Having some answers can point you in the right direction – and reduce your stress.

Dear Doctor: My husband and I are trying to have a baby, but we’re having problems conceiving. Could my stress be to blame?

Dear Reader: First, let’s consider a couple of statistics, specifically as they relate to women. The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates 6.1 percent of married women between the ages of 18 and 44 are infertile, while 12.3 percent of women between the ages of 18 and 44 have difficulty getting pregnant. Infertility is known to be linked to alcohol use and smoking, and possibly caffeine, so in assessing your own risk factors, I first would look at those potential influencers.

The best study of stress and pregnancy was among 401 married couples in Michigan and Texas attempting to get pregnant. The women in this study were followed for 12 months. They filled out questionnaires to assess their stress levels and took part in a measurement of their saliva’s amylase.

Salivary amylase is an enzyme that has been shown to be a reliable marker of psychosocial stress. Levels of it rise with increased activity of the sympathetic (“flight or fight”) nervous system.

This study found the group of women with the highest level of amylase was 29 percent less likely to become pregnant than those with the lowest level of amylase.

Further, the level of amylase correlated well to a woman’s stress level based on the scores from the questionnaires that were filled out.

So it seems reasonable that psychological stress can reduce the chance of getting pregnant.

Further, simply trying to become pregnant and being unable to do so can create stress, as many studies have shown. A Korean study found the levels of psychological distress were significantly higher in women who had difficulty conceiving compared with women who were able to conceive. This

This week, let’s look at the best bids and plays by junior players (under 26) last year.

First, a good defense by Filip Jelic from Serbia.

Six hearts is no bargain, but if you push there, you must try to make it.

In this sequence, South’s move over four hearts was questionable.

With an unavoidable club loser and only nine top tricks (one spade, five hearts, one diamond and two clubs), South has to play the spade suit without loss. He must find West with the king, but what about the 10?

The right line is to win with dummy’s diamond ace, ruff the diamond 10 in hand, draw trumps (the 2-2 break doesn’t hurt) and play three rounds of clubs.

If the clubs are 4-2, and South has to ruff the fourth round, then he should lead the spade queen from hand. Maybe West will not cover. But if he does, declarer returns to hand with a trump and runs the spade nine.

Here, if West takes the third club, he is endplayed. So let’s assume West defends well, throwing away his queen on the second round. When East shifts to a low spade at trick eight, South plays low from hand.

Here, that forces out West’s king and declarer is home.

How did Jelic defend? South started clubs with his king, then on the second round, Jelic correctly played his queen. But declarer decided that this was from an initial queen-doubleton (and West had erred in not throwing his queen under the king), so South played low from the board.

Jelic exited with his third club to defeat the slam.

ADVERTISEMENT FOR BIDS CITY OF JOLIET, ILLINOIS Time and Place of Opening Bids. Sealed proposals for the construction of the Forest Park Phase 1 Water Main Improvements - City of Joliet Contract No. 2220-0317 for the City of Joliet, Will County, Illinois, will be received at the Office of the City Clerk, City of Joliet Municipal Building, 150 West Jefferson Street, Joliet, Illinois 60432 until 10 A.M., February 24, 2017, and at that time will be publicly opened and unit price total read aloud.

Description of Work. The proposed construction consists of installing approximately 1,200 feet of 6-8-inch, 800 feet of 12-inch, 20 feet of 14-inch, and 1,600 feet of 16-inch ductile iron water main, including new hydrants, valves, water services and other miscellaneous items of work.

Information for Bidders. Any contract or contracts awarded under this invitation for bids are expected to be funded in part by a loan from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA). Neither the State of Illinois nor any of its departments, agencies, or employees is or will be a party to this invitation for bids or any resulting contract. The procurement will be subject to regulations contained in the procedures for issuing loans from the Public Water Supply Loan Program (35 IAC Part 662), the Davis-Bacon Act (40 USC 276a through 276a-5) as defined by the United States Department of Labor, the Illinois Prevailing Wage Act (820 ILCS 130/1-12) as ascertained by the IDOL for Will County, IL, the employment of Illinois workers on public works act (30 ILCS 570), and the "use of American Iron and Steel" requirements as contained in Section 436 of H.R. 3547, the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2014. This procurement is also subject to loan recipient's policy regarding the increased use of disadvantaged business enterprises. The loan recipient's policy requires all bidders to undertake specified affirmative efforts at least sixteen (16) days prior to bid opening. The policy is contained in the specifications.

Bidders will be required to comply with the President's Executive Order No. 11246, as amended. The requirements for Bidders and Contractors under this order are explained in 41 CFR 60-4. The City of Joliet Local Bidder Ordinance does not apply to this contract.

INVITATION TO BID 2017 SANITARY SEWER REHABILITATION PROGRAM CONTRACT 2217-0317 CITY OF JOLIET, ILLINOIS The City of Joliet, Illinois will receive sealed Bids for the rehabilitation of the sewer system including Closed Circuit Pipe inspection (CCTV), T-Lining, mainline and service lateral grouting, Cured-In-Place Pipe lining, archway tunnel and manhole rehabilitation until 10 A.M., local time, Wednesday, February 22, 2017, at the City of Joliet, 150 West Jefferson Street, Joliet, IL 60432 at which time the Bids will be publicly opened and read aloud.
