JJC board election includes 10 candidates

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Ten candidates are running in the Joliet Junior College board elections in April.

Because the JJC board saw three resignations in 2015 – trustees’ terms last six years – there will be two seats open for two-year terms and two seats available for six-year terms.

JJC spokeswoman Kelly Rohder said candidates can declare for which terms they want to run.

Incumbent Mike O’Connell – whose term expires this year – along with former board trustee Susan Marie Klen, Margaret Hornung and John Mahalik are running for the two open seats for

Klen was one of six candidates to run in the April 2015 board race, but she lost that election.

The candidates who win in 2017 will fill the terms of former board Chairwoman Tina Markley and Trustee Barb Adams, both of whom resigned in 2015 after Markley complained about attempts to remove her from the chairwomanship and internal board politics.

The terms of both Markley and Adams were up in 2019.

Six candidates are running for two open seats for six-year terms: George Gaspar, Bob Bodach, Philip Juarez and incumbents Alicia Morales, Patricia Deiters and Daniel O’Connell.

next terms for seats that were occupied by former board Chairman Jeff May – who resigned in 2015 for health reasons – and Mike O’Connell. Both of their terms were set to expire this year.

Daniel O’Connell, Morales and Deiters were each appointed to the board in 2015 following the resignations of May, Markley and Adams. Because they were appointed to fill unexpected vacancies, the three appointees must – if they choose – run in the 2017 election cycle to retain their seats, Rohder stated in an email.

Gaspar and Klen were two of the 18 people who applied to fill vacant seats after Markley’s and Adams’ resignations, but were not chosen.

Bodach, of Shorewood, is a director of the Will County Bar Association.

Mayoral candidates focus on issues, reflect on city’s heritage

bokon@shawmedia.com CREST HILL – Crest Hill’s future and its heritage are reflected in the April race for mayor.

All three candidates are lifelong residents of Crest Hill. They all have been major figures in city government. And they can walk to each others’ houses.

“We’re all about within six blocks of each other,” said Mayor Ray Soliman, who is seeking his third term.

The candidates brought up issues about the future growth of Crest Hill.

But they all in some way have been part of the 56-year history of the city, which was incorporated in 1960.

Opposing Soliman is Nick Churnovic, the former mayor whom Soliman defeated in 2009, and Alderman John Vershay, the city’s longest-serving alderman.

Vershay is the senior candidate in the race – senior enough to have known Churnovic’s father before Churnovic did.

“I’ve known Nick all his life, and I knew his father before he was born,” Vershay said. “I grew up a half-block away from Nick’s parents.”

Churnovic’s father started the company that Churnovic owns today – Joliet Glass Block Window Co. It was started in 1951 and is located in Crest Hill.

“I’m committed to the community, and I care about the city,” Churnovic said.

Churnovic was a one-term mayor, but his election was one of local historic proportions. He defeated Don Randich, who had been mayor for 24 years before Churnovic took office in 2005.

Randich noted his own longtime connections to Crest Hill in his farewell speech.

“The Randich family has been here since 1918. We were here before Crest Hill was a city,” Randich said at his last City Council meeting.

Economic issues

Churnovic’s one term was eventful in other ways. Crest Hill hired its first city administrator in 2006. And Menards came to town in 2007.

“When I was mayor we opened Menards, and since then there has not been a business of that caliber opened,” Churnovic said.

Menards opened on Weber Road, a sign of the potential for development

in Crest Hill’s portion of a major commercial corridor that runs from Joliet to Bolingbrook.

Both Churnovic and Vershay have said Weber Road development is the top issue.

“I keep seeing us lose business to Romeoville,” Vershay said.

He argued that Crest Hill had a chance to get both the Blain’s Farm & Fleet store that opened last year on Romeoville’s section of Weber Road and the Thomas Toyota dealership that will move from Joliet to another Weber Road site in Romeoville.

“I was very disappointed to see them go,” Vershay said. “We need someone to talk with business people and get them to move here.”

Vershay, now retired, had a career in sales in addition to working as a part-

time Crest Hill police officer in the early 1960s. He is the longest-serving alderman, having been on the City Council since 1979.

The past eight years

Soliman, a onetime Crest Hill police officer himself who later retired from the U.S. Postal Service, pointed to growing sales tax revenues, city improvements and balanced budgets as accomplishments in his two terms.

“The promises that I made in 2009 are promises we kept,” Soliman said. “I feel we have come a long way in the city of Crest Hill.”

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Now is the time to volunteer for the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service.

The last two weeks before the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, which is Jan. 16, are when organizers typically see the most sign-ups, said event coordinator R. Dale Evans.

So, it’s not to late to volunteer, Evans stressed.

“Always around this time of year is when I get that big push,” Evans said Thursday. “These two weeks are critical. We get our volunteers registered, and we get our projects.”

The local day of service is one of many held around the country that honor the civil rights leader Jan. 16 by organizing volunteer efforts to help nonprofits in local communities.

In 2016, 689 volunteers worked on 28 projects.

The “signature event,” Evans said, is the collection of wreaths at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood. But there are many others indoor and outdoor for volunteers of all ages, he said.

“We always have projects for young kids,” he said. “We’ve had volunteers as young as 3 years old.”

Rauner appoints Robert Filotto to Rialto board

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The first appointment to the new Rialto Square Theatre board has been made.

Robert Filotto, a Joliet accountant and business owner who served on the board when it was first formed in the early 1980s, was appointed Wednesday by Gov. Robert Filotto Bruce Rauner.

Filotto is the first of three appointments that eventually will be made by the governor after the entire Rialto board resigned last week.

“I felt like it was time to step forward and offer my services again as a board member,” Filotto said.

In addition to Rauner’s three appointments, Mayor Bob O’Dekirk has four appointments to the board.

O’Dekirk this week said he will present four names to the city council for approval at its Jan. 17 meeting, noting that the Rialto board needs five members to form a quorum that can hold meetings.

O’Dekirk said he has been contacted by dozens of people interested in joining the board. He said anyone interested should send a resume to his office at city hall.

Filotto said he applied for the gubernatorial appointment last week but before the entire Rialto board resigned Thursday.

Some board members’ terms were coming to an end in December. Filotto’s appointment technically replaces Vicki Murphy, a governor appointee whose term expired in early December. Board members can continue to serve after their term expires if a new appointment has not yet been made.

Filotto said he joined the Will County Exposition and Auditorium Authority, the formal name of the governmental

body commonly called the Rialto board, in the early 1980s when the authority was formed to oversee the formerly private theater.

“I tried over the years to support the Rialto,” Filotto said. “I think it’s a very unique asset that we all should be quite proud of.”

Filotto brings some historical perspective to the Rialto from his previous years on the board, along with a financial background. He has a master’s degree in business and has been a certified public accountant since 1979.

His company, Filotto Professional Services, is in Joliet. He lives in unincorporated Troy Township just outside the city limits.

Filotto also was on the board of the Joliet Area Historical Museum when it was first formed. He has been on the board at the Will County Center for Economic Development for 30 years.

LOCAL BRIEFS Essington Road 7-Eleven robbed

JOLIET – Two men robbed a convenience store at gunpoint early Wednesday.

The holdup happened at 2:31 a.m. at 7-Eleven, 2405 Essington Road in Joliet.

Deputy Police Chief Al Roechner said two men came into the store, approached the clerk and showed her one of them was carrying a revolver.

“They made her go into the back room, emptied the register, grabbed some cartons of cigarettes, told her not to call the police and fled on foot,” Roechner said.

The suspects were last seen heading northeast from the store. The clerk was not injured.

The armed suspect was a black man who was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, black pants, black shoes and gloves. His accomplice was a black man wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt, black pants and black shoes.

Three charged in Joliet gas station skimming thefts

JOLIET – Police have arrested three men who allegedly stole funds from

bank accounts linked to victims who used their debit cards at Joliet gas stations.

Gheorghe Dunca, 39; Catalin Dunca, 25; and Gheorghe Marinel Velcu, 22, were staying at a motel in the Dunca 1800 block of McDonough Street in Joliet when they were taken into custody Saturday, according to Will County Jail records. The three Catalin men were arrested on Dunca charges of credit card fraud and participating in a continuing financial crimes enterprise. All three are being held in the county jail on $350,000 bond.

Marinel According to jail Velcu records, the U.S. Secret Service also has pending charges against the suspects. Catalin Dunca allegedly provided a different name and age to law enforcement before his identity was established.

Will County court records indicate the suspects would have to surrender their

passports if they make bail and specify how the bond money was obtained.

In late November and December, the suspects installed a “skimming device” on gas pumps at Thornton’s gas stations, according to the Joliet Police Department. A card reader was placed over the debit card slot at the gas pump

to record that information, and the suspects allegedly used re-encoded debit cards to make ATM withdrawals.

Law enforcement typically recommends pulling on the card slot before using a debit card to check if the machine has been tampered with.

With the acquisition, Illinois American Water acquired three wastewater treatment plants that serve a community small enough that it would be better served by one or two treatment plants, Hermann said. The company has been working ever since the acquisition to adjust planning decisions made before the village’s incorporation.

Hermann said Illinois American Water’s strategy now is to convert to two treatment plants, and costs would be more substantial for customers if the company continued to invest in three plants. The transition project is in the permitting, planning and zoning stage, and the company hopes to complete it by 2021.

Hermann noted the commerce com-

mission requires private companies such as Illinois American Water to do certain improvements that ensure a reliable utility service.

“Over 86 percent of the rate adjustment is driven by capital investments that have been or will be made in the year ahead,” Hermann said.

Fricilone said in a statement that taxpayers already pay too much for their water.

“I am gratified that we were able to work with CUB to diminish the burdensome hike IAWC wanted to push through,” he said. “This is a great example of local government working with a nonprofit watchdog organization to help our residents and hold utility companies accountable.”

Illinois American Water provides service to 314,000 customers in service districts that stretch from far southern Illinois to the suburbs of Chicago.

A commerce commission news release from Dec. 13 states that the agency approved about $35.3 million in additional annual revenue for Illinois American Water, $14.2 million less than originally requested throughout the state. In the Chicago metro district, the water company was approved for $5.5 million of the $6.3 million it requested.

HOMER GLEN – Homer Glen residents learned in December that Illinois American Water Co. will not be able to increase water rates by as much as it originally intended.

Two Will County Board members from District 7 – Steve Balich, R-Homer Glen, and Mike Fricilone, R-Homer Glen – teamed up with the Citizens Utility Board to fight the rate hikes.

The Illinois Commerce Commission determined certain expenses the company proposed to recover from the rate hike were too high and should be decreased. The company requested the rate hike – effective this month – to pay for infrastructure improvements.

“I started making phone calls and ended up talking with CUB,” Balich said.

The Citizens Utility Board is a nonprofit consumer organization that operates on donations from the public to represent consumer interests in utility rate matters before the commerce commission. The board fights rate hikes and typically deals with electric, gas and phone rates.

Monthly bills for Homer Glen water consumers were expected to go up about $22 per house, Balich said. The board fought to get the rate increase down to about $10 per house per month.

“That makes it clear that it’s outrageous to begin with,” Balich said. “But it’s better to save some money than not at all.”

Illinois American Water’s senior manager of field services and produc-

tion, Richard Hermann, said the company doesn’t have specifics on how much rates would have increased if the commission approved the amount for which the company asked. The company has since estimated rate adjustment numbers for Homer Glen residents in light of the commission’s approval.

Hermann said the expected monthly rate adjustments for a Homer Glen customer who uses 4,500 gallons of water a month on a 5/8-inch meter are as follows: A reduction of about 54 cents on the water service portion of a bill and an increase of about $17.70 on the wastewater treatment side of the same bill.

Balich said water rates have been an ongoing issue in Homer Glen.

“People in Homer Glen have been upset about the water bill for years,” he said.

Balich said he thinks water companies and other utility companies should be budgeting correctly initially, and if they did, the money for infrastructure costs would be there.

But Hermann said part of the challenge with wastewater infrastructure is the ever-changing Environmental Protection Agency regulations.

Changes over the past 10 years include new limits on phosphorus and other nutrients and minerals, among other things. While the limits improve water quality, they require significant infrastructure upgrades that cost millions of dollars, Hermann said.

Further complicating matters specific to Homer Glen is that Illinois American Water acquired Citizens Utilities Co. of Illinois in 2002 after the village of Homer Glen was incorporat-

Born: September 9, 1946 Died: January 2, 2017

Linda Rae Baltz, age 70, of Shorewood, passed away suddenly, January 2, 2017 at her home.

Linda was born September 9, 1946, the daughter of Gilbert and Florence (Perdelwitz) Tribley. She was a graduate of Southern Illinois University and taught seven years for Troy School District. She later joined the Will County Sheriff’s Department where she served 20 years as a Deputy Sheriff in various capacities.

Linda loved being with her family and friends, and was an avid collector and Chicago Bears fan. In recent years, she enjoyed playing cards with her friends and pool parties. She will be remembered for her love of the holidays and her beautifully decorated home at Christmas.

Surviving are her daughter, Jamie (Mark) Herzberger of Channahon; one son, Adam (Gail) Baltz of Shorewood; four grandchildren, Ashley (Danny) Butler, Rachel and Blake Herzberger, and Nikki (Emory) Atterberry; two great-grandchildren, Izaiah and Nevaeh Galarza; her mother, Florence Tribley of San Antonio, TX; two brothers, Mark Tribley of Carbondale and Craig (Jenya) Tribley of San Antonio; and one nephew, Alexander Tribley. Preceded by her father, Gilbert Tribley.

Florence Ella Cooper-Grocesley was born September 20, 1934 in Ruleville, MS. She was one of ten children born to the union of Ellis and Ethel Lee Cooper. She peacefully slept away into eternity on December 31, 2016 with family by her side.

Florence was a devoted member of Christ Temple Apostolic Faith Church where she served faithfully until her health declined. She

was a foster mother to many children later resulting in her adopting a son. She was loved by all who knew her from near and far.

She was born June 25, 1936 to the late Anna and James Kallas in Chicago, IL where she was raised and educated, a graduate of Fenger High School. She married Christo M. Dragatsis on June 29, 1958 at St. Spyridion Greek Orthodox Church in Chicago and had resided in Joliet since marriage.

In addition to her husband of 58 years, she is also survived by her daughters and sons, Ann Dragatsis, Stacey Neese, Mathew (Evelyn) Dragatsis and James (Stephanie) Dragatsis; grandchildren, Christopher and Kyle Neese; Christo and Marina Dragatsis; Anastasia, Alexa and Caroline Dragatsis; sister-in-law, Katherine (nee Dragatsis) Diemer; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Preceded in death by her parents; and siblings, Frank (in infancy), Peter (late Marguerite), George (late Grace), Louis and Nicholas Kallas.

Mary, a devout Greek Orthodox Christian, thoroughly enjoyed cooking and baking, especially for all the family gatherings. She was a former Sunday School Teacher and active member of All Saints Greek Orthodox Church, the Philoptochos Society, the Daughters of Penelope and the Mykonos Society. Longtime volunteer at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center who enjoyed crafts in her free time.

Preceded in death by her husband, Edward W. Falck (1978); and three brothers, David, Gene and Robert Edman, Sr. Dee was born December 23, 1925 in Joliet, Illinois to David and Olga Edman. She graduated from Joliet Township High School, Class of 1943. Together with her husband, Ed, they owned and operated Dee & Ed’s Grocery Store in New Lenox from 1956 until 1971. She also was the owner and operator of the Capricorn Gift Shop in New Lenox. Dee is a member of United Methodist Church of New Lenox.

She enjoyed traveling the world and seeing new places, loved to drive and take off whenever she could. Life was a highway. Dee enjoyed her second home in Madeira Beach, Florida for many years. Shop ‘til you drop was her motto. She had a great love for the Pinocchio story and enjoyed her Pinocchio collection.

Alan was a loving and caring person. He was funny, quick witted and always had an ear to listen to any ones problems. Although his life was cut short, Alan’s good natured personality touched many lives. He will be missed by many.

He was a dog and a cat person, he and his family provided a home for numerous beloved pets throughout his lifetime. He will be greatly missed by his wife, family, and friends.

Fr. Thomson Panakal, born October 8, 1934 and passed from this life into Eternal Life on December 14, 2016 with his devoted nephew Jimmy and family at his side.

Fr. Panakal, a priest of the Archdioceses of Delhi, began ministry at St. Dennis Parish, Lockport in June of 1995.

His kindness, graciousness and faithfulness endeared him to many. Following 20 years of ministry at St. Dennis, at the age of 80, he returned home to India in August of 2015.

Father was preceded in death by his parents, Varghese and Philomen; a brother, Jose; and a sister, Sr. Aurelia.

Alexander Godfrey passed away suddenly on his birthday, December 27th, 2016 at age 78.

Beloved father of Allison Godfrey (Ken Moore), husband of Jo-Ann (deceased), and dear companion and best friend of Cheryl Rosenkrans.

Alex was born in Copper Cliff in 1938, the son of Alexander and Elizabeth (Stull) Godfrey. He loved to talk about his fun and adventurous childhood with his siblings, and close friends in Northern Ontario.

Alex is survived by sisters, Diane Soule (Jack), Carolyn Cattran (Doug), Susan Konopnicki, Linda Pigott (Brent), and Fraser Godfrey (Terry).

Alex worked for years in the steel industry, in Ontario, Quebec, New Jersey, and finally the Chicagoland area before retiring for good in 2011. He was passionate about the Toronto Maple Leafs, despite living in areas with other hockey teams, and always felt that ‘this was the year’. He was promised a spot on the parade route, and when that day comes, he will be there in spirit.

A celebration of his life will take place on January 7th, 2017 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 1201 West Route 6 at Deerpath Drive, Morris, Illinois. Inurnment to follow this spring in Canada.

Alleged torture victim is from Crystal Lake, police say

nlinhart@shawmedia.com Four people are in custody after a video of a duct-taped man from Chicago’s Northwest suburbs allegedly being tortured was live-streamed on Facebook, police said.

“It’s sickening,” Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said. “It makes you wonder what would make

individuals treat someone like that.”

The Streamwood Police Department said the 18-year-old victim in the video, who suffers from a mental health illness, is possibly a high-risk missing person from Crystal Lake, although Crystal Lake police could not confirm that.

Chicago police said the incident took place Tuesday in an apartment on the 3400 block of West Lexington on the West Side of Chicago. Officers found the

victim wandering the neighborhood in a state of trauma, and later, authorities drew the connection with the Facebook video, according to Chicago police.

“They saw that the individual was in distress and they cared enough to do something about it,” Chicago police Capt. Steve Sesso said.

The officers learned that the individual they encountered in distress was reported missing from a suburban town,

Chicago police said.

“So during the course of talking to this individual, who was in distress, they were able to determine the location ...” Sesso said.

Four teenagers – two men and two women – are in custody, and criminal charges are expected. Three of the suspects are from Chicago, and a fourth is from Carpentersville, Chicago police said.

She became a Geriatric Nurse Practioner who specialized in Alzheimer’s and Dementia, a disease she would later have. Mary loved her retirement and volunteered at various places that interested her. She and John were parishioners and went to daily mass at St. Paul’s the Apostle for over 40 years. Mary taught CCD there for years and was a Eucharistic Minister.

Her faith brought her peace and was the foundation of her life.

Mary loved and was loved. She loved her children and grandchildren with all her heart. Her John was her biggest supporter and she was his. They loved to travel, spend time with their grandchildren exploring new places, and their weekly date night. Mary, her beautiful smile, and kindness will be missed.

Mary’s children would like to thank her caregiver Mattie, and the wonderful people lead by Tricia Lee at Alden Estates in Naperville for their kindness and wonderful care to their mother.

Marilyn was an avid reader that regularly attended church at The First Church of God and The Harmony Holiness Church. Her greatest joys in life were watching her son perform with The Foggy Mountain Band and attending her grandson’s sporting events.

Survived by her grandson, Charles J. (Heather) Thomas; daughter-in-law, Tina Fenili Thomas; and was the aunt of many nieces and nephews.

Mary Elizabeth Walsh (Naughton) passed away after a long illness with her children by her side on January 2, 2017.

Mary was 81 years old.

Obama, Pence harden ‘Obamacare’ battle lines

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Hardening battle lines for the brawl to come, President Barack Obama urged congressional Democrats to “look out for the American people” in defending his legacy health care overhaul, while Vice President-elect Mike Pence stood firm Wednesday in telling Republicans that dismantling “Obamacare” is No. 1 on Donald Trump’s list.

“We’re going to be in the promise-keeping business,” Pence declared at two separate Capitol news conferences. Only 16 days before Trump takes over the Oval Office, he said repealing and replacing Obama’s law will be the president-elect’s “first order of business.”

“The American people voted decisively for a better future for health care in this country, and we are determined to give them that,” Pence said.

Outnumbered in the new Congress, Democrats didn’t sound confident in stopping the Republicans cold but signaled they wouldn’t make the GOP’s job any easier.

New Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said that if the Republicans do scuttle the health care law, they will have to come up with a replacement plan before Democrats consider whether to help them revamp the system.

That adds pressure on Republicans, who for years have battled among themselves over what a new law would look like, including how to finance its programs and whether to keep Obama’s expansion of Medicaid for more lower-income people.

“They’re repealing, we’re not. It’s their obligation to come up with a replacement,” Schumer said, a sentiment he said he believed Democrats shared unanimously.

Even with White House and congressional control, annulling “Obamacare” and replacing it looms as a daunting task for the GOP. Leaders hope to have legislation voiding much of the law on Trump’s desk by late next month, Republicans said.

But after six years of failing to unite behind an alternative, GOP leaders are discussing postponing when repeal would take effect for 18 months or longer, allowing more time to craft replacement legislation.

Underscoring the law’s widespread constituency, the Obama administration said at least 8.8 million people signed up through Dec. 31 for coverage in 2017. Even so, outside experts doubt the administration will meet its nationwide target of 13.8 million signups.

Millions more have coverage under the statute’s Medicaid expansion.

Trump has provided few details about how he would redesign the law, but has said he wants to retain popular provisions such as ensuring coverage for people with pre-existing medical problems.

Rauner prepares for tough 2018 governor race with big deposit SPRINGFIELD – Gov. Bruce Rauner is loaded for bear.

We are two years out from the 2018 elections, and he deposited $50 million into his own campaign coffers.

Why so much, so soon?

He’s sending a message.

Whatever Democrat considers taking him on will be attacked relentlessly.

In 2014, when Rauner was elected, he spent $65 million.

Rauner, an ultra-rich venture capitalist, has money to burn. And the person it will scorch is whatever Democrat takes him on.

Mike Madigan, who heads the Democratic Party and is about as popular statewide as tooth decay, is busy recruiting liberal gazillionaires to meet the challenge.

There is Chris Kennedy, the son of the late Sen. Robert Kennedy, and then there is J.B. Pritzker, an heir of the Hyatt hotel fortune. Both men, unlike Rauner, were born to great wealth.

It will be interesting if either of these fellows run. Somehow, I doubt it.

Why? Whoever challenges Rauner should expect to be attacked relentlessly. If you are a rich guy living a comfortable life, why would you put yourself through that? And it’s worth noting that neither Kennedy nor Pritzker have ever run for office before.

The interesting thing is that despite his loaded campaign coffers, Rauner is vulnerable.

First of all, midterm elections almost always favor the party that doesn’t hold the White House. And given the animosity Democratic voters hold toward Donald Trump, particularly in blue states such as Illinois, Rauner likely will be swimming against the tide.

It doesn’t mean he will drown, but it will be a tougher race than when he first captured the Executive Mansion.

And I make that statement reluctantly. Of all of the governors who have served in my lifetime, he comes the closest to matching my own libertarian ideology.

I want government out of my wallet and out of our private lives.

But Illinoisans are weary of the constant war between Madigan and Rauner.

And he’s right for blaming Madigan. But Rauner has done a poor job of messaging about why he is engaged in this struggle. I’ve covered every governor since James R. Thompson, and this administration has done the worst job by far of sharing its vision for the state.

Because of this, voters view this conflict as a personality clash between two egos rather than a conflict between divergent political philosophies.

Madigan is hell-bent on making sure Rauner has no successes to run on when he seeks re-election. And the people of Illinois are suffering for it.

Many voters have taken to viewing Madigan like mildew on the shower curtain. They don’t like it, but it’s hard to get rid of so they just put up with it.

While they might agree with much of what Rauner is trying to accomplish – term limits, independent redistricting and lower property taxes – they might view Rauner as the more expendable part of the equation in ending the strife in Springfield.

Yes, Rauner is vulnerable.

I anticipate the next two years of the Rauner administration will look pretty much like the past two. The state will fall further behind in paying its bills, and we will go four years straight without a state budget.

The majority in the legislature will do everything it can to block any Rauner endeavor.

And don’t be surprised if state workers go on strike in the middle of this chaos.

Madigan, who collects power the way some grandmothers collect buttons, has every interest in continuing to stir the chaos. After all, Rauner is a threat to his power.

To the Editor: I read your editorial on Dec. 22, and it wouldn’t be a bad idea if our politicians would get a little Christmas Cheer. Governor Rauner and Michael Madigan have butted heads and neither one is going to back down.

Rauner didn’t know that being governor was only a title and that he would not be in charge. It seems kind of strange, being from Illinois, that he was not familiar with who ran the state. That was his first mistake.

His second and biggest mistake was to publicly go on record and say he was going to fix what was wrong in Illinois.

Madigan took it personal and there was no way Madigan would let that happen, even if it means taking the whole state down with him. That, my friends, is Illinois politics. Sad but true.

I have a suggestion on how to remove a politician, but I don’t know if it would be legal. Here is what I think can be done. A politician takes an oath to uphold all laws and the constitution of the state. If he does not fulfill the oath, would that be enough grounds to have him resign or have him removed without having to file a lawsuit?

To the Editor: Referencing the Kohl’s ad flier in the Dec. 22 Herald-News about being open 24 hours for last-minute shoppers. I think it is thoughtless, insensitive and downright barbaric that stores adopt this policy. Why do you managers and owners encourage people to wait till the last minute to shop by doing this?

We have 364 other days in a year to buy presents for Christmas. If people can’t do their shopping somewhere in that timeframe, there’s no need to pamper them by staying open 24 hours to satisfy your bottom line.

Did you ever consider that your employees have their own holiday preparations to make? Why put the pressure on them just because you want every penny of the almighty dollar?

Considerate managers would close their stores at normal hours – or even early – so their staff could enjoy Christmas without the frenzy. Please think about this concept owners and managers – and do the right thing next Christmas – let your employees have a Merry Christmas, not a frenzied, exhausting Christmas! I do hope you’ll make the right choice in 2017.

cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The wrestling teams from Plainfield South and Joliet Central experienced a lot of positives over the holiday break, and that figures to benefit them as they make preparations for the postseason during the next few weeks.

The Cougars and Steelmen kicked off Southwest Prairie Conference action for 2017 in a dual meet Wednesday at South. In a sign of the progress that Central has made since the start of the season, it gave the hosts a good battle before falling, 39-31.

South, which is ranked 23rd in Class 3A by Illinois Matmen, is coming off a rough stretch where it participated in both Harlem’s Dvorak and Granite City’s Schmitt invites. But all of those matches against strong competition took their toll as the Cougars were missing a few key performers for their meet with the Steelmen.

Meanwhile, Central enjoyed a productive week where it won four of the six dual meets that it took part in. Although the Steelmen also were missing some regulars, they still managed to compete well against the Cougars, who’ve only dropped two dual meets this season, both of them by narrow margins, to Plainfield Central and Moline.

The Cougars received top-six finishes from Adrian Cervantes, Enzo Silva and Jake Kendall at the Dvorak, while Silva won a title at Granite City and Erik Santiago and Cervantes both placed fourth there. All but Cervantes competed Wednesday and also record-

South opened Wednesday’s meet with a pin from Santiago at 160 before Central’s Ke’Andre Wiley rallied for a 7-5 win over Kyle Houlihan and South’s Will Johnston came from behind to capture an 8-6 victory over Keon Wiley.

Central’s Isaiah Davis recorded a fall at 195 and teammate Jeremy Fennewald followed with a pin to give the visitors a 15-9 lead. After South’s Dominic Ferraro and Central’s Marco Acosta got forfeits at the next two weights, South tied it at 21 when Silva got a pin at 113.

Zach Kolb beat Andre Martinez, 6-3, to put the Cougars ahead for good, and Andrew Cervantes followed with a 6-1 win over Jon Garcia to make it 27-21. South’s Noah Bickett received a forfeit win at 132 and Kendall followed with another pin. The Steelmen closed things out with a fall from Erick Martinez and a major decision from Santos Gonzalez.

“We’re kind of settling in,” Central coach Gardner Coughlen said. “We had some newer kids in the lineup and kids are getting down to weight. One of our better wrestlers wasn’t in the lineup tonight and we had to forfeit, so that could have changed the final score. I’m just glad to be in this position since South is consistently tough.

“I’m very pleased with how we’ve been doing. We went 4-2 over Christmas and it’s harder to field a team then because some people leave and go on vacation. I can’t say enough about our guys since they’re keeping it together and they’re improving.”

Shanahan leads coach candidate list THE WAY WE HEAR IT

WHO ARE THE TOP NFL HEAD COACH PROSPECTS? In the immediate aftermath of the final day of the regular season, it is difficult to sort out who the hottest head-coaching candidates are around the NFL because the bulk of the most successful assistants are still working in the playoffs.

Some of the top prospects including Kyle Shanahan (Atlanta), Josh McDaniels and Matt Patricia (New England) and Dave Toub (Kansas City) are currently hop-scotching around the country getting in as many interviews as they can with their clubs on byes this week, but they will be expected to be back hard at work with their current teams on Monday to get ready for the divisional playoffs.

But while Shanahan is reported to be talking to the Broncos, Jaguars, Rams and 49ers; McDaniels has interviews with the Jaguars, Rams and 49ers; Patricia will meet with the Rams and Chargers; and Toub is on the list for the Broncos and 49ers, it would be highly unusual for one of them to actually accept a job before completing their work with their current club, and they become unavailable for second interviews as long as they keep winning in the playoffs.

Then there is the group that includes Vance Joseph of the Dolphins, who’s reported to be set to interview with the Broncos and Chargers; the Lions’ Teryl Austin and Jim Bob Cooter; Pittsburgh’s Todd Haley; Oakland’s Bill Musgrave; and Seattle’s Darrell Bevell, who are all thought to be top head coach prospects but haven’t been able to talk with the six clubs with vacancies yet because they are focused on their current clubs’ wild-card games this weekend.

McDermott is a classic example of one of the biggest hurdles all of these top assistants face, as he was a red-hot candidate last year after the masterful job he did coordinating the Panthers defense, but while he was busy working through the Super Bowl, all of the open jobs filled with coaches whose clubs were out of the playoffs.

More often than not, teams are in a hurry to fill their vacancies and are rarely willing to wait until after the Super Bowl.

The Way We Hear It, Tom Coughlin is still the frontrunner for the Buffalo job, but there are no high-profile college coaches likely to make the leap to the NFL this season, and recently canned Rex Ryan, Gus Bradley, Jeff Fisher, Chip Kelly and Mike McCoy are highly unlikely to be candidates for the other five openings.

SHANAHAN TOPS A NUMBER OF LISTS The Way We Hear It, Kyle Shanahan is the most sought after of all of this year’s top head coaching candidates and he may be the leader in the clubhouse right now in Denver and Los Angeles.

plumb of the list of openings, there are reports around the league that John Elway may not be the easiest boss for a head coach to work for, plus it is unclear whether or not the quarterback of the future is currently on the roster and the offensive line needs to be rebuilt.

That said, it’s not exactly a news flash that Elway won two Super Bowls and earned a spot in Canton playing for Shanahan’s dad, although it is unclear whether or not Elway

and or Shanahan will view that as an asset or liability.

The Rams’ job could be equally attractive to Shanahan depending on whether owner Stan Kroenke deems him to be high profile enough to fill what he is selling as one of the top “celebrity coaching openings,” and whether or not Shanahan believes Jared Goff was worth the No. 1 overall pick in last year’s draft.

There would be far less pressure on Shanahan to win immediately in Los Angeles, even though he would start on Day One with some of the best defensive talent in the NFL and a running back in Todd Gurley with All-Pro, build-an-offense-around-him potential.

We can’t rule out the Jaguars or 49ers, either, but according to our sources, Shanahan is the surest thing among the top coordinator candidates to get a job this year.

MATCHUP TO WATCH

This game is continuing a time-honored tradition of the Saturday, AFC wild-card game being the least desirable of the four weekend games, with neither team appearing to be a threat to the top seeds. It’s a game of questionable quarterbacks. Brock Osweiler regains his starting spot because of Tom Savage’s concussion. Matt McGloin had been the option for the Raiders, but his injury in Week 17 has opened the door for rookie Connor Cook to make his first NFL start. Derek Carr’s injury marred what had been one of the NFL’s best stories in Oakland, but the Raiders still have plenty of talent on both sides of the ball. The Texans, sans J.J. Watt, still boasted the league’s best defense, which it needed to help lift the 29thranked offense, thanks in large part to Osweiler’s struggles, into the playoffs.

DOLPHINS VS. STEELERS

Sunday, 12:05 p.m. CT, CBS, Heinz Field OVERVIEW

The Texans’ best chance to get the offense going will be with Lamar Miller. The good free-agent acquisition quietly posted 1,073 rushing yards this season. That total would have been higher, but Miller missed the final two games of the season with an ankle injury. He’s expected to return against a Raiders defense that gave up 4.47 yards per carry this season, the eighth-highest rate in the NFL. In Week 11 at Estadio Azteca, Miller had 104 yards on 24 carries and a touchdown. Linebacker Malcolm Smith is the Raiders’ tackles leader, but the edge players will need to be key to prevent Miller from getting to the open field. He has the speed to take any run for a long gain on one cut. The Raiders gave up five carries of 40 yards or more, the second-most in the NFL.

It’s the surprise team in the AFC playoffs against a staple in the conference’s postseason. An eight-year playoff drought ended for one, while the other has been .500 or above for 13 consecutive seasons. The Dolphins had been written off following a 1-4 start, with their only win coming in overtime against the Browns. New head coach Adam Gase righted the ship, though, thanks in large part to breakout running back Jay Ajayi, an efficient passing attack and Cameron Wake’s strong season. The Dolphins rattled off six in a row and won nine of their next 10 to make the playoffs for the first time since 2008. The Steelers might be the most dangerous AFC team playing on wild-card weekend. The AFC North champs enter the playoffs having won their final seven games with one of the league’s most high-powered offenses.

These teams met in Week 6, when the

Dolphins began their win streak with a 30-15 victory at home. Ajayi ran for 204 yards in the victory.

MATCHUP TO WATCH

Ben Roethlisberger engineers the league’s fifth-best passing attack. It helps to have dual-threat back Le’Veon Bell, lethal wideout Antonio Brown and a pretty good offensive line – not to mention the two-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback. Pittsburgh, for all its passes, allowed sacks on only 3.52 percent of those throws, the second-best rate in the NFL. On the other side of the ball, the Dolphins are strong up front, but young and banged up in the secondary. Cameron Wake (11.5 sacks, 24 QB hits), Ndamukong Suh (five sacks, 17 QB hits) and Andre Branch (5.5 sacks, 12 QB hits) will have to find a way to get past the Steelers’ O-line, but bringing down Roethlisberger is easier said than done.

Miami sacked him twice and hit Roethlisberger six times in their Week 6 win.

NFC wild-card matchups feature 3 QBs with rings Saturday, 7:15 p.m. CT, FOX, CenturyLink Field OVERVIEW

The goal of every NFL club is to arrive at the postseason playing their best football; Seattle and Detroit will have to settle for the former part of the equation.

The Lions went from a potential firstround bye entering Week 14 to losers of three consecutive games and forced to make the vaunted visit to the “Clink.”

Matthew Stafford went from MVP candidate with an 8-4 mark and 21 touchdowns with just five picks to 1-3 with a dislocated middle finger, three TDs and five INTs. The Seahawks went 3-3 in their final six games, struggling to adjust to the loss of Earl Thomas, whose Week 13 broken leg preceded the defense surrendering an average of 25 points per game – up nearly 10 over the first 12 outings.

Seattle was 7-3-1 with Thomas and 2-2 without him. Nonetheless, Pete Carroll’s club captured its fourth NFC West crown and the right to host a home playoff

game. The Seahawks have great luxuries in a Super Bowl-winning quarterback and elite front-seven, not to mention the rowdy backing of the “12’s.”

MATCHUP TO WATCH

It probably won’t be another defensive struggle similar to Seattle’s 13-10 Monday-night triumph in Week 4 last season. Since Week 1, the Seahawks haven’t been below 24 points at home, where they’re 7-1 and 48-13 overall under Carroll. Moreover, Detroit lacks the pass rush to attack Wilson’s leaky front wall – though Ezekiel Ansah and Kerry Hyder storming Wilson’s blind side might be the Lions’ best shot at an upset. They’ll also need far better play at the nickel, where Adairus Barnes was elevated this week from the practice squad and could be thrown into the fire against one of Seattle’s top wideouts and one of the game’s best slot machines, Doug Baldwin. Aaron Rodgers relentlessly attacked the slot and Asa Jackson, then safety Don Carey after Jackson went down, Sunday night.

GIANTS VS. PACKERS Sunday, 3:40 p.m. CT, FOX, Lambeau Field OVERVIEW

A wild-card weekend that opened with two quarterbacks making their playoff debuts culminates in a QB pairing with 25 combined postseason starts and three Super Bowl rings. Both of Eli Manning’s Giants world championships (2007 and 2011) included upset victories at Lambeau along the way. Yet, unlike Aaron Rodgers’ Packers, appearing in an NFL-high eighth consecutive postseason, the G-Men haven’t been to the playoffs since their Super Bowl XLVI victory.

GM Jerry Reese’s masterful offseason, wherein he reshaped the NFL’s 30thranked scoring ‘D’ into the league’s second stingiest, catalyzed New York’s return and provides hope of another upset against the NFC’s hottest team and passer. “A big thing was we had zero offensive rebounds in the first half, and they had four,” Kuhn said. “And we had some turnovers in transition that were not forced. They always say every unforced turnover is worth a point, and we must have had five of them. That’s five points right there.

That could have been the difference in

the game.”

JJC went on a 9-0 run early in the second half as Mitch Kwasigroch scored from inside, Richie Elias hit a 3-pointer, Rob Blissett turned his own steal into a layup, and Kwasigroch scored a layup off a Blissett assist.

That run gave the Wolves a 42-41 lead with 16:12 left.

JJC women come up short against Rock Valley, 6-4 center

The Rock Valley College women’s basketball team demonstrated part of the reason it has had so much success in recent seasons as the Golden Eagles rode the play of 6-foot-4 sophomore center Tierra McGowan to a 75-52 victory over Joliet Junior College in the North Central Community College Conference opener for both teams Wednesday night at Wills Gymnasium.

McGowan finished with 20 points and 14 rebounds. With her teammates finding her time and again around the basket, she kept Rock Valley on top early on. Then, after the Golden Eagles (12-3, 1-0) heated up from outside to open a 31-17 lead in the second quarter, the Wolves (10-6, 0-1) never were able to climb all the way back against the club

that won NJCAA Division III national titles in 2012, 2013 and 2015 and finished second in 2014 under coach Misty Opat.

Not that JJC did not make its runs.

Kierra Tyler, a freshman from Joliet West, came off the bench and sparked an 8-0 run as she scored a traditional three-point play and an 8-foot runner, and Deesha Brefford chipped in a 3-pointer to slice the deficit to 31-25 with 2:57 left in the half.

“We have to be able to get the ball to the basket and convert,” Wolves coach Shaun Sanderson said. “Kierra [Tyler] is going to get there. She’ll throw her body into you, do whatever she needs to do.”

After a timeout, however, Rock Valley scored six straight points, and the Golden Eagles led at the break, 37-27.

JJC’s Cora Likins, a freshman from Lincoln-Way Central, opened the third quarter with a 3-pointer to make it 3730, but the Wolves never got that close again. Guard Jaycee Cleaver scored 16

of her 24 points in the second half, and Emily Cox hit two big 3-pointers for Rock Valley to keep the deficit in double figures.

The Wolves still were within striking distance at 64-52 with 4:09 left, but they did not score again as the Golden Eagles ran off the final 11 points, seven

by Cleaver.

“I think at the end we were a little fatigued,” Sanderson said. “But they only had nine players like us, and they were tired, too. We just have to play better and play through being tired.”

It did not help the Wolves’ cause that their best player, Brefford, was playing with an illness.

“You probably noticed we had to sit her out for a long stretch,” Sanderson said. “There was not enough in her to be able to do her usual tonight.”

Tyler led JJC with 11 points. Kianna Campbell (Lockport) chipped in 10, Brefford nine and Zakah Blake eight to go with eight rebounds.

The Wolves needed all hands on deck to contend with McGowan inside.

“Coming in we had two targets,” Sanderson said. “We wanted to front the post and make it hard for them to get the ball in there, and we wanted to contest the three. We were a little slow covering the perimeter all night.”

Rock Valley finished hitting 8 of 24 from three-point range while JJC was only 3 of 15.

The Golden Eagles are ranked No. 4 in the nation, and things do not figure to get a whole lot easier for JJC in the N4C wars.

“In games we’ve won, we’ve held the opponent to 55 points or less,” Sanderson said. “We’ve been averaging close to 80. We’re not used to being the team scoring 55. We’re not going to win games in this conference scoring less than 60.

“This is the toughest conference in the country, but I wouldn’t want it any other way.”

JOLIET – The Joliet Junior College men’s basketball team got off to a redhot start in Wednesday night’s North Central Community College Conference opener against Rock Valley at Wills Gymnasium.

Unfortunately, the Golden Eagles matched the Wolves point for point, and with 9:17 left in a whirlwind 10plus minutes, the game was knotted at 29-29.

From that point, however, the Wolves (14-3, 0-1), who are ranked seventh in the NJCAA Division III, found a lid on the basket. Rock Valley (134, 1-0), ranked No. 9, managed a 38-32 halftime lead, and except for a few fleeting moments in the second half, the Golden Eagles led the rest of the way en route to an 81-74 victory.

“The difference to me was their execution,” JJC coach Joe Kuhn said.

“There also were some spots where our lack of execution hurt us. In that lull in the first half, there were places where we missed some point-blank shots.”

The lull Kuhn mentioned was a stretch of more than seven minutes, when the Wolves scored one point in falling behind, 38-30. They finished shooting 41 percent on 29 of 70 while Rock Valley closed at .560 on 28 of 50.

Kwasigroch, who led the Wolves with 15 points while Clint Berhow had 14, Blissett 13, Elias 10 and Robbie Brooks nine, scored on a rebound to put JJC back ahead, 43-42. The game was tied at 45 and then at 47 with 12:56 left, and Rock Valley never trailed again.

JJC was within 65-62 with 3:33 to go, but a 6-0 Golden Eagles’ run made it 71-62, and for all practical purposes, it was over.

“They played well defensively against us, but I don’t know if they are that good of a defensive team,” Kuhn said. “It was easy for them to defend us because we weren’t moving the ball.

We didn’t get the ball to the other side all night.”

The Wolves continue on the tough N4C grind Saturday afternoon when visiting Madison Area.

“The thing we talked about in the locker room was the pain we are feeling now,” Kuhn said. “Will it force us to improve our team game? That’s what we need to have happen.”

Rock Valley got 21 points from forward Jace Kitchen. Alec Pena added 13. Post player DeMari Davis scored four straight baskets in a five-minute span down the stretch and finished with 11. Point guard Malique Ross, a freshman from Oswego, also had 11 to go with five assists.

“Ultimately, we will have to beat these guys in the playoffs,” Kuhn said.

Haller, Gerl to be honored at Pitch & Hit Club banquet Auto Dealer VIEWS Dick Goss Joliet-area baseball fans have to be in their glory this month.

Not only will former Cubs catcher David Ross speak at the University of St. Francis Brown & Gold banquet Wednesday night and Milwaukee Brewers bench coach Pat Murphy speak at the Old Timers Baseball Association of Will County banquet Jan. 26, but the Pitch & Hit Club of Chicago’s annual event, scheduled Jan. 29 at the Tinley Park Convention Center, has a definite local flavor attached to it.

The Pitch & Hit Club annually presents several awards. This year, the award winners include Bill Haller, Bernie Gerl, Mark Smith and Brian Storako.

Haller, a Lockport native, will be inducted into the club’s Lou Boudreau Hall of Fame. He was an American League umpire for 21 years, worked 15 AL Championship Series games in four series, 27 World Series games in four series and four All-Star Games. In 1982, he became the last umpire to work the plate at a World Series game with the balloon-style chest protector.

Gerl will receive the Bo Jackson courage award. Generally considered one of the best ballplayers to come out of Joliet area, Gerl’s career course was altered by a stint in the Army in World War II and then a horrific 1948 bus crash that killed four of his Duluth Dukes teammates, his manager and the driver of the other vehicle.

He was burned badly in the crash – internally and externally – and endured an extended hospital stay but survived and later returned to the playing field, where he was a minor-league all-star. He is the last surviving member of that Dukes team.

Smith, who has coached Providence Catholic to an unprecedented three-straight Class 4A state championships, will receive the Ron Santo Humanitarian Award. Storaka has coached Lemont to 3A state championships in 2014 and 2016 and will receive the Amateur Coach of the Year Award.

White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson and longtime Northwestern coach Paul Stevens, who played his college ball at Lewis, also will be among the honorees.

Switching gears ....

Lockport graduate Alando Tucker, among this area’s best basketball players ever, still is playing professionally, and his game is much as we remember it.

Tucker is in Israel, playing for Hapoel Tel Aviv in the Israeli Basketball Premier League. Through 10 games, he is averaging 33.5 minutes, 18.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.5 steals while shooting .553 from the field, .357 from 3-point range and .786 from the free-throw line.

After an all-state career at Lockport, the 6-foot-7 small forward played at Wisconsin, where he was the Big Ten Player of the Year and a first-team All-American in 2007. He played briefly in the NBA and has been playing professionally, either in the States or overseas, since.

Two former Lockport teammates, who like Tucker played for current Joliet Central coach Lawrence Thompson Jr. with the Porters, are busy with their professional careers.

Richaun Holmes, our area’s current representative in the NBA, is a power forward with the Philadelphia 76ers. He suffered a concussion about 10 days ago and has missed the past five games because of the league-mandated concussion protocol. He is hoping to return for Friday’s game against the Boston Celtics.

The 6-foot-10 Holmes, who was drafted by the 76ers after two solid years at Bowling Green, has played in 21 games and is averaging 16 minutes, 6.9 points, 4.3 rebounds, 0.9 assists and 0.9 blocked shots. He is shooting .513 from the floor, .350 from 3-point range and .621 from the free-throw line.

His Lockport teammate, Karrington Ward, who played at Eastern Michigan, is attempting to keep his NBA dream alive as he toils with the Oklahoma City Blue of the NBA Developmental League.

The 6-5 forward is averaging 6.1 minutes of action over 15 games and is averaging 1.7 points and 0.6 rebounds.

Among Ward’s teammates with the Blue is point guard Jannero Pargo, a name Bulls fans know well.

Butler’s big 4th leads Bulls over Cavs

The Associated Press CLEVELAND – Jimmy Butler scored 10 straight points during a critical stretch in the fourth quarter, leading the Bulls to a 106-94 win Wednesday night over the Cleveland Cavaliers, who had a less-than-100 percent LeBron James and were without stars Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love.

Butler, who was coming off a 52-point game against Charlotte, scored 14 of his 20 points in the fourth as the Bulls held off Cleveland’s comeback.

Doug McDermott added 17 points for the Bulls, who made a season-high 13 3-pointers.

James, who has been battling a cold for several days, was questionable until about 20 minutes before the game, when the Cavs announced he would be the one – and only – member of Cleveland’s “Big 3” in uniform. He finished with 31 points, eight rebounds and seven assists in 37 minutes.

James was forced to go it alone as Irving missed his third straight game with a hamstring issue that appears to be more serious than first diagnosed, and Love still is recovering from a nasty

case of food poisoning.

The Bulls made just 1 of 8 3-pointers in the first quarter before finding their range. They dropped 11 of their next 14 and built a 15-point lead when James went to the bench with 3:30 left in the third quarter.

But Cleveland’s reserves cut the Bulls’ lead to four when James returned with 8:49 remaining. He made two straight layups to pull the Cavs within 89-88 and was driving for the go-ahead bucket when Butler stepped in front of him in the lane and drew a charge.

Butler then hit a 3-pointer on the next possession, and Cleveland never got closer than eight and had their home winning streak ended at nine.

McDermott scored 15 points on 6-of-6 shooting in the second quarter, when the Bulls made 7 of 9 3-pointers and outscored the Cavs by 13.

Tip-ins: Bulls: Starting PG Rajon Rondo didn’t play for the third straight game amid talk that he could be traded. ... Butler’s offensive game – he came in averaging 35.8 points in his past four games – has gotten a lot of attention lately, but Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg continues to be impressed by the forward’s defense.

JOLIET – Trailing for most of the second half, the No.19-ranked University of St. Francis men’s basketball team rallied for a 69-66 Chicagoland College Athletic Conference win over Purdue University Northwest on Tuesday night at the Sullivan Center.

The victory extended the winning streak to a season-long five games for USF (11-5, 5-2). Playing away from home for only the fourth time in 17 outings, Purdue Northwest (6-11, 4-5) lost its second straight.

The Saints trailed, 31-27, at half.

Purdue Northwest remained on top until the 3:30 mark of the second half, leading by as many as 10 points on three occasions.

Trailing 64-54 with 7:13 left, USF went on an 11-0 run to take its first lead of the second half, 65-64. The Pride recaptured the lead, 66-65, on a pair of Torrance Johnson free throws at the 1:13 mark. Johnson paced Purdue Northwest with 24 points and 10 rebounds.

With 16 seconds left, Saints junior Iain Morison hit the first of two free throws to even the score at 66. After a Pride timeout, Morison buried the second attempt to give the Saints the lead for good.

Senior Logan Timmons drew a foul after senior Landus Anderson stole the ball on Purdue Northwest’s ensuing possession and sunk both foul shots to account for the final scoring. The Pride got off a potential game-tying 3-point attempt with 0:02 to go, but the shot missed and USF gathered the rebound to cap the victory.

Morison finished with a career-high 27 points. He was 10 of 12 from the field and 7 of 8 from the foul line to go with nine rebounds and three blocked shots.

Senior Jake Raspopovich scored 13 points. Timmons grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.

Future of the Bears’ offense in question after news conference BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush LAKE FOREST – Bears Nation clearly has more than its share of questions and complaints about the 2016 Chicago Bears and what is next for “the Beloved.” Three specific concerns rise above the others.

First, what they are going to do about the quarterback position?

There was no way the people in charge could have answers 72 hours after the final game, so I had no expectations of enlightenment when general manager Ryan Pace and head coach John Fox held their season-ending news conference Wednesday.

No. 2, however, is while it was obvious to everyone who’s ever watched a football game, the Bears’ greatest assets are rookie Jordan Howard and their ground game, and the team and offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains chose to ignore it most of the season, begging the questions, why, and is Loggains the right guy to run the offense?

Fox made it clear he intends to retain Loggains – although he did not rule out adding to his offensive staff – so I asked him this question:

When Adam (Gase) left last year, you described the offense as your offense. Only six teams in the league ran the ball less than you, and until two weeks ago only two teams had. Is that how your offense is supposed to work, and if not, how do you fix it?

Fox’s answer was, “I think situational football – you know the situation of games, I think, adjust that. If you look at we were top six in yards per carry, alright so, we were 17th in the league in yards.

“I think when you’re behind like in as many games as we were, too many games, I think that affects that. Just like in turnovers or takeaways, I think affects that.

“But I think we’re very efficient running the ball. So our struggles weren’t running the ball.”

Since Fox clearly didn’t answer my question, I tried following up with this; “No they weren’t, and that’s the point of the question. Is (the lack of runs) the reason you were behind in as many games as you were?”

This time Fox replied, “Well, very much so. There’s no doubt that ball security is critical. Inconsistency at quarterback is part of that, it’s not an excuse; it’s reality.

“You know we went in the regular season with three different starting

So, that’s an area that we need to get more consistent at and, that’s going to be a big part of moving forward and having success moving forward.”

Fox never did answer either question but does appear to acknowledge they have to do better. However, he gave no indication as to how and/or why it will improve under Loggains, and at other points in the news conference he insisted play-calling wasn’t an issue. Having struck out on an answer to No. 2, I moved to the last of the big three, asking Ryan Pace, “We were told when you and John got here that you had complete control of the football op-

eration, including the hiring and firing of the head coach, and that John as the head coach has control of the staff.

“Is that the case, and if so, are you satisfied with John’s staff?”

Pace responded, “I’m comfortable with that, and you’re correct, that is how it is set up, and so, obviously, John and I have a tight, close relationship and we talk about staff all the time, and it’s not just the coaching staff, it’s all the department heads in football ops.

But I’m confident in this coaching staff.

I am.

“Of course, every year, win or lose, there’s some changes with position coaches and even some scouts, and I think it happens, but I’m confident in this staff going forward.”

Can we be confident that Pace has the unfettered authority to do whatever he has to, to get this fixed?

Yes, I think we can.

Can we feel comfortable these guys understand and have what it takes to fix this offense?

Unfortunately, we weren’t given much reason on Wednesday to believe we can.

LAKE FOREST – Ryan Pace has a pretty good understanding that the quarterback decision he makes in the next few months will define his legacy as general manager of the Bears and affect the direction of the team.

The most important position on the field, and one that has eluded the Bears in terms of consistency for decades, was a hot topic for Pace at his end-of-season news conference Wednesday.

“In my mind, there is no more important position than the quarterback.

It is a critical, critical position,” he said.

“And I know and I recognize that the decision that we make on that quarterback is going to be significant for all of us for the direction that this organization is going to head.”

During their 3-13 season, the Bears used three starting quarterbacks and had three on injured reserve. Jay Cutler, Matt Barkley and Brian Hoyer combined to throw 18 touchdowns and 19 interceptions.

Hoyer and Barkley are out of contract, as is Connor Shaw, who impressed in the preseason before a leg injury. The quarterback decision, however, starts

Much of the news conference for a team that had 19 players on injured reserve focused on two qualities Pace wants at the quarterback position.

“You know, this year it was about consistency and availability,” he said.

“We played with so many different quarterbacks it was hard to find continuity.

But I think we’re looking for consistency and productivity from that position, and I think we’ll find it this offseason.”

Pace and John Fox were openly disappointed in the team’s turnover ratio (11 takeaways, 31 giveaways, minus-20 ratio tied for last in the NFL), so add decision-making to important QB qualities Pace seeks.

“We’ve got to get out of that category,” Pace said about turnover margin.

“It starts with not throwing interceptions.”

The Bears will get a close look at the senior quarterbacks when they coach the Senior Bowl later this month.

They’ll meet with the top QBs at the Combine and explore veteran options when free agency opens in mid-March.

There is more to come as the Bears hope to fix their ongoing problem at the most important position in sports.

Cathedral of St. Raymond’s music director wants program to transform lives

JOLIET – “I will honor Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year.”

This quote from “A Christmas Carol” worked for Charles Dickens’ Ebenezer Scrooge, and it works for James Grzadzinski.

Grzadzinski, 27, is the new director of music at the Cathedral of St. Raymond in Joliet. Under Grzadzinski’s direction on Jan. 7, the cathedral will present, “O Come, Let Us Adore Him,” a concert of choral music for Christmas and Epiphany.

The concert is the second installment of the 2016-17 Cathedral Music Series, which Grzadzinski initiated after he became director of music in August.

Choral associate Michelle Gliottoni Rodriguez and associate organist Dick Siegel will assist Grzadzinski during the concert.

Its theme, Grzadzinski said, is “how a little humble child born in a manger and the example of the star guiding the wise men can transform the world.”

“It’s our gift to the community and a reminder to us as a people that, after the secular world takes down the tree, we are still celebrating Christmas,” Grzadzinski said.

Grzadzinski said the free concert will feature music by Handel, SaintSaëns, Darke, Willcocks, Biebl, Rutter, Nestor and French.

Traditionally, Epiphany is celebrated Jan. 6, although in some countries, the United States included, the celebration is moved to the first Sunday after Jan. 1. In western churches, Epiphany commemorates the magi’s visit to the infant Jesus.

Epiphany, Grzadzinski said, is often referred to as a “little Christmas.”

Grzadzinski’s own life is an unfolding of his love for sacred music and where he can share that love in God’s service, which began in early childhood.

“I remember sitting in church and admiring the organists at the parishes I attended as a little kid,” Grzadzinski, who grew up in Oak Forest and now lives in Tinley Park, said. “I started playing piano at 4 and remember telling my mom, ‘That’s what I want to do when I grow up.’”

At age 7, Grzadzinski occasionally assisted the organist during Mass. By high school, Grzadzinski was the assistant organist at Queen of Martyrs Church in Evergreen Park.

Xavier University in Chicago with an emphasis on piano and composition.

He spent nine years working in the Archdiocese of Chicago before coming to the cathedral, Grzadzinski’s dream since he was a small boy.

“I was always inspired to lead such talented choirs and wonderful musi-

cians in a space that really captures the immensity of God,” Grzadzinski said.

Although Grzadzinski would like to marry one day, raise a family and be ordained as a permanent deacon, he also considers music ministry as much a vocation as religious life.

“There’s definitely a call from God that impels this,” Grzadzinski said.

“Without this call and faith, this would just be music.”

Grzadzinski hopes the music presented Jan. 7 will work to deepen the attendees’ faith, transform their lives and give a sense they’ve “come home.”

Popular Christmas music stresses “coming home” for Christmas and sacred Christmas music does the same, he said.

“The church is really our beacon to come home, to come to God,” Grzadzinski said. “If we have God at the center our lives everything falls into place.”

USF develops partnership with Joliet Catholic grade school JOLIET – The University of St. Francis has developed a unique partnership with the Cathedral of St. Raymond Nonnatus Grade School (St. Raymond) in Joliet.

The Cathedral Neighborhood Education Partnership began with a common goal to encourage and support each other, with a shared commitment to Catholic identity, innovation, collaboration, reflection and professional development. The partnership is intended to support USF teacher candidates and St. Raymond teachers and students.

The partnership is based on four pillars: professional development, faith formation, student achievement and social.

Student achievement pillar

One activity is the opportunity for USF teacher candidates to observe in

the St. Raymond classrooms.

A specific example of this is when USF teacher candidates learn about research-based best practices for teaching in their USF course, then spend time at St. Raymond observing the classroom teachers useing these best practices with their students. It is a way for the USF teacher candidates to witness theory put into practice.

Connected to observation in St. Raymond classrooms is another distinctive activity, the USF Reading Clinic. During this clinic, USF teacher candidates welcome St. Raymond students to the USF campus for 10 literacy tutoring sessions, where students work in small groups to improve reading skills. The clinic is free and offers a service to the community.

Professional development pillar

St. Raymond is able to identify spe-

cific areas it would like addressed, and USF faculty members create professional development opportunities to meet their specific needs.

Faith formation pillar

A beautiful tour of the cathedral and a presentation on the Year of Mercy are just some of the experiences that are made available to individuals from both St. Raymond and USF. Diane Ratajczak, a second-grade teacher at St. Raymond, expressed appreciation for USF teacher candidates’ assistance in preparing young students for reconciliation and first Holy Communion.

The USF teacher candidates roleplay in order to help elementary students feel more comfortable with the process. Ratajczak said she noticed that the students were less nervous,

and that both groups enjoyed the experience.

Social pillar

This aspect of the CNEP allows faculty, staff and administration from both schools to join together a few times a year to get to know each other, have casual conversations and share some laughs.

Creating the opportunity for discussion without a formal agenda has contributed to an expanded comfort level.

Some of the other benefits offered through the CNEP include internship opportunities for USF teacher candidates and activities for St. Raymond students on the USF campus.

Teacher at St. Mary Immaculate Parish receives grants PLAINFIELD – St. Mary Immaculate Parish fourth grade teacher, Renee Streicher, is the recipient of two grants from “Illinois Agriculture in the Classroom.”

One of the grants purchased $250 in books which Streicher will use in her social studies and language arts classes. Both sets of books focus on the importance and business of agriculture in our lives.

The second grant is a hands-on project entitled “From Lamb to Art – Illinois Farms Create Textile Art.” Students will engage in an arts project which will demonstrate that agriculture impacts art as well as food.

Small business owners and craftspeople will visit as special speakers for this project.

Fourth-grade students also will serve as teachers for their kindergarten buddies.

Streicher is a 23-year teacher.

She has spent the past 12 years at St. Mary’s teaching fourth grade.

Reilly Jo Swanson, daughter of Tim and Stacey Swanson, currently holds a 4.46 adjusted GPA in the JCA honors program.

Swanson, a fouryear varsity member of the Angels softball Reilly Jo program, and two-time Swanson East Suburban Catholic Conference All-Conference honoree, also is a member of the National Honor Society, National Art Honor Society (where she serves as the historian), National Spanish Honor Society, Katelyn Dombrowski and Mu Alpha Theta.

She earned a certificate of honor from JCA in pre-calculus.

After graduation, Swanson will attend Drexel University on an athletic and academic scholarship, where she plans on majoring in sports management while playing Division-I collegiate softball.

Katelyn Dombrowski, daughter of Colleen Dombrowski, currently holds a 4.34 adjusted GPA in JCA honors and AP classes.

Dombrowski is a member of the National Honor Society and the Latin

Society. She also participates in the JCA science club, Respect Life Club, Bible study, vocal ensemble, Musical Theatre Troupe, and 41-88 (JCA’s art and literature magazine).

She earned first place in JCA’s 4188 contest in 2015, second place in 2016; received honorable mention in the Berenice Fox Essay contest; earned a silver medal in the National Latin test, and also earned medals from JCA as the top student in Theology I and Theology II. Outside of school, Dombrowski volunteers and participates in the St. Dennis Youth Group, Joy Teen Choir, Nativity House Community Garden and the Lockport Writers Workshop.

She plans to attend Franciscan University in Steubenville, Ohio where she’ll double major in theology and catechesis, with plans to become a catechism teacher for young students, a faith formation director, or high school theology teacher.

Dombrowski is a self-published author, having written The Hearts of the Cold, available on Amazon, as a 13-year old.

Matthew Hoffman, son of David Hoffman, currently holds a 4.24 GPA in JCA’s honors and AP program.

Hoffman has been a four-year member of JCA’s Honor Roll, and is a member of Mu Alpha Theta, the Math National Honor Society. He is the president of the tech club and also a member of the psychology club.

In the spring of 2016, he competed along with tech club at Lewis Univer-

sity’s “Guardians of the Grid” technology competition sponsored by the NSA and ComEd, where the team earned second-and third-place finishes out of eight high schools.

Hoffman is a member of the Cathedral of St. Raymond in Joliet, and plans to attend the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Bradley University, or Illinois Institute of Technology, where he’ll major in computer science or information technology.

Matthew Kelly Testin, daughHoffman ter of Robert and Sherry Testin, currently holds a 4.86 adjusted GPA in Honors and AP classes.

Testin is a member of National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, National Spanish HonKelly Testin or Society, and National Art Honor Society. As a junior, she was honored with the top GPA award for the JCA junior class.

She participates in JCA student ambassadors, the Leo Club, the math team (where she helped the team to a second place finish at sectionals and qualified for state), and cross-country (where she serves as team captain).

Testin plans to attend St. Louis University or Duquesne University next year, where she’ll pursue a degree as a physician’s assistant.

34 Smartphone use at bedtime hinders sleep Dear Doctors: I sent my mom an email at midnight, and ever since then she’s been after me to stop using my smartphone at bedtime. She insists the light from the screen interferes with sleep. Is that really true?

Dear Reader: Your mother is right. The ways in which the “blue light” emitted by smartphones, tablets and computer screens affects sleep patterns is a hot topic in scientific circles. And according to the scores of studies done in recent years, the answer consistently is the same: Yes, these devices do have a negative effect on your nightly rest.

This is troubling because insufficient sleep is associated with serious conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, coronary heart disease, depression and even obesity. About one-third of all Americans don’t get the seven hours of sleep that are recommended to maintain good mental and physical health. In fact, the sleep deficit in the United States is so severe the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention now identify it as a public health problem.

So how do the multiple screens in our lives figure into the epidemic of insufficient sleep?

Light is the cue your brain relies on to sync itself with the outside world. It regulates your circadian rhythms, which influence sleep patterns, hormone releases, body temperature and other vital functions.

Smartphones, tablets and computers all emit high-energy light in the blue spectrum.

This particular wavelength, which is similar to sunlight, has been shown to suppress the release of melatonin, a hormone produced by the pineal gland in the brain that makes you feel sleepy.

When you use your smartphone at night, even up to 90 minutes before you go to sleep, you’re confusing your body clock. The blue light from the screen is telling your brain it’s still daytime. That suppresses the release of

Once you do drift off, the disruption to your circadian rhythm is profound enough that it’s difficult to stay asleep. What sleep you do manage to get often is of poor quality.

Instead of feeling refreshed when you wake up, you face the day tired.

Some smartphone makers have introduced an option to move the self-illuminated screen from bright blue to a warmer yellow/ red spectrum, as with Apple’s “Night Shift.”

And while this may a have modest effect on sleep, we recommend putting your phone away at bedtime is a better idea.

To give yourself the best chance at a good night’s sleep: • Read from a printed book rather than an illuminated screen.

• Make your bedroom as dark as possible.

Use curtains to block exterior light, and eliminate inside light from clock dials, TV sets and, yes, smartphones.

• Do what you can to block out sound – earplugs or a white noise machine can help.

• Keep your bedroom cool; 65 to 68 degrees is ideal.

• Steer clear of large meals before bedtime.

• Be aware caffeine and alcohol can interfere with sleep.

family member keeps setting up fundraisers every time she wants to buy something for her family. If a child needs a special class, she asks the relatives to pitch in to pay for it. When her husband wanted to return to college, she brought all the extended family together to see who could contribute.

She now has set up a fundraiser to raise $6,000 to send her teenaged daughter to an expensive performing arts camp. I think if they can’t afford it, they should select a camp they can afford or have the 16-year-old go out and earn the money. I also think they should be saving for college rather than camp.

This woman’s father was a preacher, and sometimes I think she never got the message fundraising usually is for charity, not for those who happen to need some cash. Am I wrong to be embarrassed by what she’s doing, or is this a new normal? – Embarrassed In Texas Dear Embarrassed: You say your relative is the daughter of a preacher. There is a saying in the Bible, “Seek and ye shall find.” Another way of putting it is, “It never hurts to ask.” If you feel your relative is using others for something that should be her responsibility, you are free to just say no, and to do so without embarrassment.

Dear Abby: I’m retired and have the time to sew and quilt projects, which I give as gifts. I presented a “Quilt of Valor” to my father to honor his military service. I also gave a sibling one of my personalized projects as a birthday gift.

When we visited their home, I was horrified to see one of their dogs sleeping on the pillow I had made for them. When the dog woke up, it scratched itself and dragged the hair-covered pillow through the house. I have been asked to make a quilt for a disabled child living at home who has a dog that sleeps on her bed.

I no longer want to invest my time and energy after what happened to my gift. South’s intention was to take these nine tricks: three spades, two hearts, one diamond and three clubs.

There was no time to lose, so, at trick three, declarer played a club to dummy’s queen.

If Helgemo had taken this trick and, say, returned his second diamond, South could have won with his ace, cashed the club king and played another club to end with those nine winners.

Instead, Helgemo played low, successfully disrupting declarer’s communications.

As declarer had noted a momentary pause from East, he led another club and put up his king, hoping East had started with ace-third. However, South had no chance to make his contract, even if he had put in his club seven. He had only one dummy entry left in the spade queen and needed two.
