JOLIET – The team resignation by the Rialto Square Theatre board last week has created a new problem at the theater.

The Rialto can’t pay any bills because a board member’s signature is needed on checks.

Mayor Bob O’Dekirk pointed out the problem at a city council meeting Tuesday as he announced he intends to name four new members to the board by Jan. 17.

The council on Tuesday approved an intergovernmental agreement, which calls for the city to provide the theater with $500,000 in 2017.

O’Dekirk said he also plans to create a blue ribbon panel to work on a long-term plan for the Rialto.

O’Dekirk noted that the governor will need to make at least one appointment in addition to the four appointed by the mayor to give the seven-member Rialto board a quorum.

The Rialto board did not explain the group resignation, although one board member, Mary Babich, said it was necessary to ensure $500,000 funding from the city. Board Chairman Dan Vera said there were no stipulations for the resignations.

O’Dekirk did not directly address the resignations, but did make a comment regarding what the city wanted before funding the Rialto.

“I was never interested in a temporary solution to the problem,” he said. “We needed to hold their feet to the fire and not just write another check.”

Two arrested after diaper confrontation at Joliet Jewel

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Police say a man pulled a knife Friday during a confrontation with grocery store employees over stolen diapers.

The incident occurred shortly after 4 p.m. at Jewel-Osco, 1401 W. Jefferson St. in Joliet, when Felisa D. Dawson, 42, put four boxes of diapers into a Felisa D. shopping cart and walked Dawson out of the store without paying, Joliet Deputy Chief Ed Gregory said. The diapers were valued at $96.

“She went to a vehicle that was parked in the fire lane where Robert J. Smith, 58, was waiting,” Gregory said. “A 26-yearold loss prevention employee followed Dawson from the store, identified Robert himself and told her she J. Smith had to go back inside.”

As the employee walked Dawson back, Smith tackled him from behind and knocked him to the ground, Gregory said.

“While on the ground, Dawson struck him twice in the jaw with a closed fist,” Gregory said.

Another Jewel employee, a 41-yearold man, came to help his co-worker before Smith took out a folding knife and swung it at both of them, Gregory said.

No one was injured and police arrived to arrest Smith and Dawson.

“Smith complained of chest pains and was taken to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center. No cardiologist was available so he remained in the hospital overnight under police guard before being taken to jail,” Gregory said.

Both suspects reside in the 1300 block of Sterling Avenue in Joliet. Dawson was charged with aggravated battery and shoplifting. Smith was charged with aggravated battery and aggravated assault.

City manager says Joliet has become state’s third-largest city

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet is on track to be the third largest city in Illinois, City Manager Jim Hock said Tuesday.

It’s not official. Hock told the city council Tuesday that Joliet population will surpass that of Rockford with new census counts. A special census done in 2016 showed Joliet’s population increased by 1,926 to 148,409.

O’Dekirk said anyone interested in serving on the board should send a résumé to his office.

In the meantime, the Rialto, already about $600,000 behind on its bills, can’t pay any of them without a board member to sign checks.

“Right now, we can’t pay a $5 bill because we don’t have a second signature on the checks,” said John Siehl, chief operating officer for VenuWorks, the company hired last year to manage the Rialto.

Siehl also said VenuWorks plans to stay as management company at the Rialto, and he is confident the backlog in bills will be addressed by the theater foundation.

The higher population means Joliet will get $288,000 more a year in state and federal revenue based on census counts, Hock said. And, Joliet, which had been the fourth-largest city in the state, will go up a notch on the population chart, he said.

“Based on estimated reductions in Rockford from the Census Bureau, this makes Joliet the third-largest city in Illinois,” Hock said.

If so, that would put the two cities practically neck-to-neck with Joliet having about 125 more people.

Whether the numbers hold up in 2020 Census remains to be seen. In the meantime, the major point of the special census in Joliet was to see if the city could generate more population-based revenue off of state and federal tax dollars it receives.

That will happen, Hock said.

A 1 million-square-foot building under construction along Route 53 south of the Chicagoland Speedway is a sign of things to come, said Steve Jones, economic development director for Joliet.

The building, developed by Hillwood, the same developer that built the second Amazon fulfillment center in Joliet, is the first of a series of million-square-foot projects in the works.

Plans are underway for three more buildings sized at about 1 million square feet. Hillwood and the other

Economic development director for Joliet three all are speculative buildings, meaning no users are lined up. But that does show confidence in the Joliet market, Jones said.

“When you’re building 1 millionsquare-foot buildings, you’re not doing it to let it sit for two or three years,” he said. “You’re doing it because there’s a market.”

Ikea, Mars and Whirlpool all are constructing logistics buildings in Joliet, showing an impressive array of

brand names that entered the Joliet area in the past two years. Amazon opened two fulfillment centers in the city in that time.

“I think that the image of Joliet getting the Amazons, Ikeas and Mars of the world resonates in the corporate world,” Jones said.

Public projects

The big logistics development has been on the south end of the city. But

it’s not the only place where things are happening.

“I don’t think there’s any question that the economy of Joliet is doing very well,” Mayor Bob O’Dekirk said.

“A lot of the development to the south has been great and brought jobs with it, but it’s encouraging to see businesses open and ribbon-cuttings all over town.”

One big project tentatively slated to start sometime in 2017 is the Houbolt Road bridge and interchange, a public-private partnership estimated to cost between $170 million and $190 million between CenterPoint Properties, the state and possible contributions from the city of Joliet.

Officials talk of repurposing courthouse

mmallory@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Will County officials on Tuesday morning began discussing what to do with the Will County Courthouse when the new one opens in 2020 or 2021.

The existing courthouse – long considered outdated, overcrowded and unsafe – will either have to be repurposed or demolished when the new Will County Judicial Complex opens.

With design and development of the $195 million judicial complex advancing, officials want to get a plan in place for the existing courthouse building.

Capital Improvements Committee Chairwoman Ragan Freitag, R-Wilmington, said a lot of people have been asking what the next step is. No action was taken Tuesday, but board members were in consensus about finding the best use for the building.

County Board Speaker Jim Moustis, R-Frankfort, said he’s not supportive of tearing the courthouse down.

“I still think we have a need for the space,” Moustis said. “I think it’s a functioning, viable building.”

Moustis said there might not be that big of a cost difference between demolishing the building and repurposing it.

Freitag agreed with Moustis that much of the courthouse could potentially be converted to office space to fill the needs of many different departments and functions.

Moustis also said the Will County Office Building, which opened as a Sears retail store in 1947 and was bought and remodeled by the county in 1984, may be inadequate for current county operations.

He suggested exploring the option of moving the office building’s functions to a remodeled courthouse.

“Maybe the functions of [the Will County Office Building] could be better suited in [the courthouse building],” Moustis said, adding that a lot of people work in the basement of the office

building, which has little airflow and daylight.

Placing county offices in the old courthouse next to the judicial complex would create an “urban county campus,” where many county operations are located in one area across the street from each other. Joliet City Hall also is west of the future judicial complex site.

Jason Dwyer, of Wight & Co., said the courthouse has some deferred maintenance that needs to be done in order for it to be used long term, on top of any remodeling possibilities.

Dwyer suggested meeting as a group

to further discuss options. Committee Vice Chairman Mike Fricilone, R-Homer Glen, said the board should do that before going forward with a detailed study on the property.

“I do think we should also look at what other options we have, and who else can use that building,” Fricilone said. “It may be needed by somebody else more than we need it.”

The Will County Office Building is home to many offices, including the Will County Clerk’s Office, Will County Board and Will County Executive’s Office.

Judicial complex design makes room for data needs

Jason Dwyer, with design firm Wight & Co., said the firm is on track to have a design document submitted to the county and Gilbane Construction on Feb. 3 regarding the $195 million Will County Judicial Complex. Dwyer said Wight & Co. staff are nearing completion of meetings with users – such as Will County judges and the sheriff’s office – to determine best layouts.

Meanwhile, information technol-

ogy leaders from the county’s various departments have met with the firm to help determine how the building can meet technology needs of the future.

Dwyer said the process takes some time because the county is transitioning from a building that is limited in its ability to incorporate technology to a modern building that is quite different.

Dwyer said there will be a primary data server room in the judicial complex. He noted there are a lot of systems and servers that run the Will County courts that actually are in the Will County Office Building’s data center currently. They will be moved to the new judicial complex.

“We’re designing the main server room of the courthouse to allow for expansion,” Dwyer said. “A lot of that comes down to not knowing for sure

what’s going to happen with the state in terms of adopting or forcing a system on the judiciary.”

The firm is also trying to consolidate some server needs into the main server room. Will County Board member Chuck Maher, R-Naperville, wondered whether this is an opportunity to place all the county’s data needs in one location – in a building with at least a 50-year life cycle.

Dwyer said discussion early on in the design phase of the new judicial complex was to not make it the county’s main data center.

“We’ve designed it to accommodate everything we know we need to have to support the building right now plus some future growth,” Dwyer said. “But it is not planned to become the entire county’s main data center.”

Public Safety Complex taking shape

Leopardo Construction project manager Nicole McElroy said construction of the $30 million Will County Public Safety Complex still is on target to finish by the end of 2017. In the last few weeks, crews have completed some structural steel work, all underground electrical work and plumbing, and most concrete work.

Health Department work begins

On Dec. 23, the county issued a request for qualifications from firms interested in designing the new Will County Health Department. The county expects to review firms after a Jan. 30 deadline.

It’s expected to be a 14-month design phase and firms were told the current location might be the most viable, but interested parties are encouraged to explore using other sites as well.

Tilted Kilt closes in Joliet Get rid of painful

JOLIET – The Tilted Kilt Pub & Eatery at the Louis Joliet Mall apparently rang in the new year and then closed.

New Year’s Eve was the last day of business, said a spokeswoman at Tilted Kilt’s corporate headquarters in Tempe, Arizona.

More information about the closing was not available.

The Joliet location becomes the latest of a few Tilted Kilt restaurants to close in recent years. Other closings have been in Elgin, Gurnee and Vernon Hills.

Tilted Kilt restaurants are known for their female wait staff dressed in revealing plaid skirts and tops.

The Joliet restaurant opened in late 2011 during the holiday season. It moved into a hard-to-fill restaurant location that had last been occupied by a Bishop’s Buffet restaurant.

Louis Joliet Mall manager Eric Loula said other possibilities are being explored for the space, which is 5,000 square feet.

“Every store and every restaurant in the mall, no matter what type of business, does go through a life cycle,” Loula said. “We are still about 100 percent occupied. The mall’s doing well. So we have other ideas for the space.”

Rock Island Clean Line withdraws petition with Iowa Utilites Board

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com Clean Line Energy announced in December that it had withdrawn the pending applications for franchise approval at the Iowa Utilities Board (IUB).

The Rock Island Clean Line (RICL) applications will remain on hold until a resolution of pending legal proceedings in Illinois are finalized.

“A resolution could come as early as the middle of 2017,” a press release from Clean Line Energy said.

The Illinois Supreme Court has decided to review the 3rd Appellate Court August ruling that it does not qualify as a public utility.

The ruling unanimously reversed the Order of the Illinois Commerce Commission, granting a certificate of public convenience and necessity to the RICL, and remanded the case to the commission with directions to enter an order consistent with its decision.

The RICL’s delayed development

timeline and upcoming deadlines associated with the IUB procedural schedule led to this decision to withdraw the applications, according to the release.

The company said in the release that despite RICL’s schedule delays, the need to build electric infrastructure remains.

Clean Line Energy continues work on its other transmission projects and currently has people working to complete engineering and design, test materials and negotiate easements to prepare for the Plains and Eastern Clean Line, which will serve the Oklahoma Panhandle to Arkansas as well as other states throughout the Southeast.

Joliet police: Passenger had loaded gun in parked car

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Police say a man was trying to hide a loaded gun when officers came to find out why there was a car parked in the middle of the road.

The incident occurred at 8:22 p.m.

Friday in the 800 block of Rosalind Street in Joliet, Joliet Deputy Chief Ed Gregory said.

“Officers were on patrol in the area but could not continue west on Rosalind because there was a vehicle parked in the middle of the roadway – running with its lights off,” Gregory said. “When they approached, they observed the passenger, Darvin N. Luckett, 22, making movements in the glove compartment.”

The officers then allegedly noticed

the butt of a semiautomatic handgun sticking out of the glove compartment and ordered Luckett and the driver to get out of the vehicle, Gregory said. According to police reports, the handgun was loaded and the serial number had been scratched off.

Luckett, of the 1400 block of Arthur Avenue, was arrested on charges of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, defacing the identifying markings of a firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm and unauthorized possession of ammunition.

The driver, a 24-year-old Minooka man, was questioned but released without being charged.

“It was established Luckett had called him for a ride and was just being picked up,” Gregory said.

Lisle man arrested on charges of marijuana possession, trafficking The HERALD–NEWS

NEW LENOX – A Lisle man was arrested and charged last week with possession of marijuana and trafficking after an investigation by New Lenox police and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Christopher M. Rogers, 44, of the 2500 block of White Oak Lane, was arrested Thursday by New Lenox police and charged with possession of marijuana with intent Christopher to deliver, possession of M. Rogers more than 5,000 grams of marijuana and marijuana trafficking.

New Lenox police stated in a Friday news release that the investigation into Rogers resulted from information received from an anonymous source

about a person delivering a large quantity of marijuana into the New Lenox area.

Investigators saw Rogers leave his residence in Lisle with a large duffel bag they suspected contained marijuana.

When Rogers drove to the Jewel-Osco parking lot on Nelson Road in New Lenox, investigators confronted him, took him into custody and found he had about 15 pounds of marijuana, according to New Lenox police.

A search warrant was issued for Rogers’ residence. New Lenox police and the Department of Homeland Security found an additional 5 pounds of marijuana, more than 200 vials that initial testing indicated contained a marijuana substance and an “unknown quantity of mints that initial tests indicated contain a methamphetamine,” according to the news release.

LEMONT – The Lemont High School Alumni Association is seeking nominations for the school’s Alumni Hall of Fame.

“The Alumni Hall of Fame is an important part of fostering school and community pride and recognizing the achievements of those individuals who have made Lemont High School an outstanding academic institution,” the school’s website states.

The Hall of Fame recognizes graduates who have made significant contributions to society and serve as role models to current Lemont High School students.

Continued from page 3 The bridge, which would connect with the CenterPoint Intermodal Center in Joliet, is seen as a partial solution to the truck congestion that has come with logistics development in the city.

“It doesn’t solve the problem, but it’s a $200 million investment in Joliet,” O’Dekirk said.

The bridge project and a future new courthouse downtown – set to start construction in 2018 – mean construction jobs in the city. A train station being built downtown is slated to open late in 2017.

O’Dekirk said it’s hard to find any area of Illinois seeing the kind of economic development happening in Will County and “particularly Joliet.”

Retail possibilities

One more public project Joliet officials hope to see is new interstate access at the northeast corner of the interchange of Interstates 55 and 80.

East Peoria-based Cullinan Properties, a shopping center developer, in 2015 bought 264 acres at the site, which was to be used for a major lifestyle mall before the recession hit.

But development depends on direct access to at least one of the major interstates, and there is no off ramp

Meanwhile, other sites stalled by the recession are seeing renewed interest.

Route 59 has drawn new interest, Jones said. The corners at Theodore Street are getting close attention. So is the Caton Farm Road corner outside of the Wedgewood Golf Course.

Jones would not disclose names of any of the companies looking at the sites but said the business eyeing the Caton Farm Road corner “will be

unique to Route 59.”

Two hotels also are in development: the Holiday Inn Express with conference center at I-80 and Houbolt Road and a Home2 Suites by Hilton near the Louis Joliet Mall.

More industrial

The major development in 2017 will continue to be industrial.

Other projects to be built or in progress this year are: • Cadence Premier Logistics, a

corporate headquarters and trucking operation moving from Alsip to the Laraway Crossings Business Park; • Cap Barbell, which is adding a fence manufacturing plant to its exercise equipment distribution center; • Blue Ribbon Products, the Londergon family beer distributor that has been in Joliet since the 1920s, is expanding at a new location being built in the Rock Run Business Park; • Joliet Cold Storage, a 202,000-square-foot food distributor in the Cherry Hill Business Park.

The Cadence project is notable because it adds a corporate headquarters to town.

And the Cap Barbell expansion is important, Jones said, because Joliet had to overcome a negative impression of Illinois to persuade the company to build in Joliet instead of in Texas.

“We proved that if there’s a perception that Illinois is not so business-friendly, at least Joliet is,” Jones said.

District officials are inviting community members to come out and meet Superintendent Theresa Rouse from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Jan. 21 at the Joliet Public Library, 150 N. Ottawa St. “This an opportunity for parents and community members to chat with Dr. Rouse in an informal setting,” district officials stated in a news release.

Local colleges continue to struggle with uncertain state funding

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – As Illinois enters 2017 without a budget in place, higher education institutions such as Joliet Junior College continue to struggle with the uncertainty of state funding.

JJC spokeswoman Kelly Rohder said the impact of the state budget impasse on the community college has been ongoing since the crisis started in 2015.

“We’re doing what we can with what we have,” she said.

The college will have discussions at a Jan. 31 board workshop meeting on ways to control costs, such as scheduling efficiency and tuition increases, she said.

The state’s stopgap budget that was approved by lawmakers and signed by Gov. Bruce Rauner on June 30 expired Saturday. Colleges and universities, along with students, continue to struggle without a state budget in place.

One area where students are struggling is with Monetary Award Program grants. Students will enter a second semester without them. JJC advanced more than $1 million in MAP grants last school year, but was unable to do so this year. The Illinois Student Assistance Commission, which administers MAP grants, stated in a Dec. 14 news release that funding for MAP and ISAC grants and scholarship programs for the current academic year have not been appropriated because of the delay of the state’s budget.

“We’re all very hopeful there will be

a budget and that it will include MAP,” said Lynne Baker, ISAC spokeswoman.

In a fall 2016 ISAC survey of MAP-eligible students, respondents indicated they worked more to cover expenses because of lack of MAP funding, took out more loans, took fewer credits or transferred to a less-expensive school in or out of state because they could not afford tuition without MAP funding.

State Sen. Pat McGuire, D-Joliet, who’s chairman of the higher education committee, said with reduced state funding, schools such as JJC are forced to cut back on services or staff, or increase tuition.

“I fear JJC will be forced to consider cutbacks and/or tuition increases this spring if the state doesn’t provide the operating grant funds that JJC is expecting,” McGuire said.

JJC has responded to unreliable state funding by closing its Small Business Development Center, identify contingency items in its budget and approving a tax levy that does not rebate back to taxpayers the interest earned on bonds for major projects.

McGuire said he was going to work toward funding MAP, as well as community colleges and universities when the state legislative session resumes this month.

He said he was hoping state lawmakers can replicate the bipartisan success last April, when emergency funding for major Illinois universities and colleges was approved.

“We need to do it again and we need to do it sooner than April,” he said.

Born in Chicago, living in Lockport since 1978. Retired from the Lockport Township High School Bus Service after 22 years of service. Member of the Grace Baptist Church, Lockport and the Butterfly Club. Irene enjoyed crocheting and rug hooking; working on puzzles of various kinds, but mostly enjoyed spending time with her family.

Preceded in death by a grandson, Daniel Lietke; her parents, William and Dorothy (Ellis) Neehouse; and a sister, Pauline Neehouse.

Born in Joliet on January 1, 1942. Jerry was a proud member of Laborers Union Local 75 for 27 years and also serving as the union’s secretary-treasurer. After retiring Jerry was a PR representative for attorneys Horwitz and Horwitz. He was also a member of the Chicago District Council for Laborers, Dale AC, Irving AC and the Moose Lodge of Fort Myers, FL. MARIANN M. MANTHEI

Born: March 2, 1948; in Manhattan, IL Died: December 28, 2016; in Naperville, IL

Mariann M. (nee Gustafson) Manthei, 68, passed away on December 28, 2016 at Edward Hospital in Naperville, Illinois.

She was born on March 2, 1948 in Manhattan, Illinois to Ruth (nee Barlow) and Wallace Gustafson. Mariann was married to Howard Manthei on September 1, 1968 and both enjoyed each other for 48 years of marriage.

Mariann leaves behind her husband, Howard C. Manthei of Yorkville; two children, Andrew C. Manthei and wife Vicki of Aurora and Aaron G. Manthei of Yorkville; and grandchildren, Richard Manthei, Sarah Manthei, and Emily Manthei.

She is also survived by her siblings, Rebecca (Gary) Schulze, Bruce (Julie) Gustafson, Rodney (Kay) Gustafson, and Brian (Susan) Gustafson.

A private family service was held at the Forsythe Gould Funeral Home in Manhattan, IL on Monday, January 2, 2016 at 12:00 pm noon.

Family Visitation was from 11:00 A.M. until the time of service. Interment is at Manhattan Center Cemetery. A celebration of life memorial service will be held at The Chapel on the Green in Yorkville, Illinois (107 W. Center St.) in the spring which was Mariann’s favorite time of year.

Mariann was diagnosed with kidney failure in 1988 at age 38, and chose peritoneal dialysis for her treatment. She continued to work at the Illinois State Department of Unemployment Security in Aurora, Illinois for several years. She always put her family members first in her life, and was active in many groups and activities including quilting, serving as president of the Yorkville Friends of the Library, and on the Board of the Chapel on the Green in Yorkville.

Inspired by her mother she developed an avid interest in gardening, and after a trip to England she converted her Yorkville yard into an English garden design and found delight in watching the plants come to life each spring.

She enrolled in the Kendall County Master Gardener program but was unable to complete the certification due to her illness.

She found comfort in watching her sons and grandchildren mature and continue her interests in gardening and camping. Her doctors and family members marveled how she persevered over the years. It is hoped the she will be an inspiration to others.

Anthony E. Owen, age 18, a lifelong resident of Plainfield, IL, passed away on Saturday, December 31, 2016 at his home from complications of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). He was born November 11, 1998 at Edward Hospital in Naperville, IL. Beloved son of Anthony J.”Tony” and Ann (nee Felcan) Owen, both of Plainfield; loving brother of Joseph Owen; adored grandson of Rose Felcan of Itasca, IL and Gary (Lois) Owen of Demotte, IN, special great-grandson of Mary (the late Wilmer) Keesecker of Itasca, IL; dear nephew of Robin (Jim) Lange, Steven Owen, Sienna (Dennis) Taylor, Richard Owen and Julie Henson; fond cousin and friend of many.

Anthony grew up in Plainfield and attended Plainfield Central High School. He was diagnosed with DMD when he was 3 years old.

When he was younger, Anthony participated in many MDA activities and played baseball with the Miracle League of Joliet. He enjoyed spending time with his mom and brother, watching movies, and cheering on the Chicago Blackhawks. Anthony had a heartwarming smile and caring personality.

A celebration of Anthony’s life will take place on Thursday, January 5, 2017, 4:00 PM at Overman-Jones Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 15219 S. Joliet Rd., Plainfield, IL. Her greatest joys in life were watching her son perform with The Foggy Mountain Band and attending her grandson’s sporting events.

Mary was an aunt to over 40 nieces and nephews. Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John; her infant daughter, Agnes; her parents, brother, James (Teri Pung); in laws, Patrick and Agnes Walsh; brother and sister in laws, Mary Cleary, Patricia Walsh, Dorothy Walsh, Richard Walsh(Audrey), and Patrick Walsh. Nephews, Thomas Cleary, Michael Richards, and Stephen Naughton.

Mary was a nurse for over 40 years. While her children were in grade school, she got a scholarship to get her master’s in Nursing from St. Xavier University. She was in management at Silver Cross Hospital, Salem Village, Loyola University Hospital, Hinsdale Hospital and LaGrange Hospital. She became a Geriatric Nurse Practioner who specialized in Alzheimer’s and Dementia, a disease she would later have. Mary loved her retirement and volunteered at various places that interested her. She and John were parishioners and went to daily mass at St. Paul’s the Apostle for over 40 years. Mary taught CCD there for years and was a Eucharistic Minister.

Her faith brought her peace and was the foundation of her life.

Mary loved and was loved. She loved her children and grandchildren with all her heart. Her John was her biggest supporter and she was his. They loved to travel, spend time with their grandchildren exploring new places, and their weekly date night. Mary, her beautiful smile, and kindness will be missed.

Mary’s children would like to thank her caregiver Mattie, and the wonderful people led by Tricia Lee at Alden Estates in Naperville for their kindness and wonderful care to their mother.

They would also, like to help anyone who helped Mary during her journey with dementia.

Maxine E. Shirtino, age 88, of Coal City, passed away peacefully on Wednesday evening December 21, 2016 at Heritage Health in Dwight.

Born September 4, 1928 in Joliet, Maxine Ernestine was a daughter of the late Peter and Nettie (Serena) Murphy. She was raised and educated in Coal City and graduated from Coal City High School with the Class of 1946. Maxine waitressed for many years at her mother’s restaurant in Coal City, as well as at Sam’s Snackbar and at several establishments in Joliet.

She was a member of Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Roman Catholic Church in Coal City, where she was involved with the Mother’s Club when her children were growing up.

Survivors include three children, Rae Lynn (Dale) Santerelli of Morris, Jerry (Cathy) Shirtino of Coal City and Jackie (Steve) Sharp of Cordova, Tennessee; (8) grandchildren, Shellie Santerelli of Ottawa, Jerry (Chrissy) Santerelli of Plainfield, Brian Santerelli, Jerry (McKenna) Shirtino and Danielle (Tyler) Valiente all of Coal City, Kris Sharp of Cordova, Tennessee, Samantha (Justin) Smith of Ft. Hood, Texas and Raegan Sharp of Cordova, Tennessee; and three great-grandchildren, Kendall, Erin and Brendon, with another expected. Maxine was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Raymond; and husband, Gerald R. Shirtino.

Per Maxine’s wishes, cremation rites have been accorded, and memorial service will be held at Reeves Funeral Home, 75 North Broadway(one block north of Illinois Route 113) in Coal City on Saturday, January 7, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. The family will then receive friends for a memorial visitation following the service until 5:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Maxine will be laid to rest in Braceville-Gardner Cemetery with her late husband at a later date.

He also loved watching the Chicago Bulls and old “Gunsmoke” episodes.

NATION & WORLD BRIEFS Police look into poisoning that he had spread the pellets that killed 4 kids in Texas under the family’s mobile home DALLAS – A criminal investigation is underway into an apparent accidental poisoning involving a professional-grade pesticide that left four children dead and an Amarillo woman in critical condition, police said Tuesday.

Authorities are looking into why the family had the pesticide pellets, called Weevil-cide, which is only supposed to be sold to people with professional licenses or certification. The product’s manual, available online, outlines stringent guidelines for using the product, including having two trained individuals apply it. Figures from the American Association of Poison Control Centers show that deaths from the pesticide are rare.

Search for Ohio plane will last until recovery

CLEVELAND – Cleveland officials said the search for a plane carrying six people that disappeared last week over Lake Erie will continue until the aircraft is found.

After Trump tweet, GOP won’t gut ethics office

WASHINGTON – The new GOP era in Washington got off to a messy start Tuesday as House Republicans, under pressure from President-elect Donald Trump, abruptly dropped plans to gut an independent congressional ethics board.

The dizzying about-face came as lawmakers convened for the first day of the 115th Congress, an occasion normally reserved for pomp and ceremony under the Capitol Dome. Instead, House Republicans found themselves under attack not only from Democrats, but also from their new president, over their secretive move Monday to neuter the independent Office of Congressional Ethics and place it under lawmakers’ control.

GOP leaders scrambled to contain the damage, and within hours of Trump registering his criticism on Twitter, they called an emergency meeting where House Republicans voted without opposition to undo the change.

The episode, coming even before the new Congress was convened and lawmakers were sworn in, was a powerful illustration of the sway Trump may hold over his party in a Washington that will be fully under Republican control for the first time in a decade. GOP lawmakers who’ve felt unfairly targeted by the ethics office had defied their own leaders with their initial vote to neuter the body, but once Trump weighed in, they backpedaled immediately.

“With all that Congress has to work on, do they really have to make the weakening of the Independent Ethics Watchdog, as unfair as it may be, their number one act and priority,” Trump had asked over Twitter Tuesday morning, in an objection that appeared focused more on timing than on substance. Trump, who will take office in a little over two weeks, said the focus should be on tax reform and health care, and he included the hash-tag #DTS, for “Drain the Swamp,” his oft-repeated campaign promise

Democrats and even many Republicans were quick to point out that the lawmakers’ plans for their ethics watchdog flew in the face of that notion. The measure was part of a GOP-written rules package that looked like it could fail after Trump registered his objections amid a public outcry from good government activists.

The stripped-down package was approved late Tuesday by the House, 234-193.

“We were elected on a promise to drain the swamp, and starting the session by relaxing ethics rules is a very bad start,” said GOP Rep. Tom McClintock of California.

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy mentioned Trump’s opposition in the emergency meeting, and some lawmakers said it had a powerful effect.

“I do believe when President-elect Trump tweeted out ... members got calls,” said Rep. Lou Barletta, R-Pa. Trump spoke by phone with House Speaker Paul Ryan on Tuesday after the ethics change was dropped.

The Office of Congressional Ethics was created in 2008 after several bribery and corruption cases in the House, but lawmakers of both parties have groused about the way it operates.

Vote to abstain on Israel a back-stabbing, divisive parting shot Over the length of the Obama presidency, I have voted for him, I have agreed with most of his decisions during his leadership of the U.S., and I have tried hard to be patient with his efforts both domestic and foreign, but now I must draw the line.

Throughout modern history, our U.S. presidents have worked to protect Israel in her efforts to establish a lasting peace in the Middle East.

Whether Democrat or Republican, the occupiers of our White House over the years have stood with Israel and have promised to support Israel’s hard work to become a strong leader in the region all the while staring down the gun barrels of their Middle East neighbors, but last Friday, President Obama broke this historic U.S. promise big time!

By instructing our U.S. representative on the Security Council of the United Nations to abstain in a Council vote to once again censure Israel for its activities in the West Bank, we have been witness to a blatant, back-stabbing parting shot by our president against Israel – a clear demonstration of terrible leadership and an overt betrayal of one of our staunchest and dependable allies.

And in the process, President Obama has significantly set back any hope of a return to the Israel-Palestinian peace process for years and has even increased the threat of new conflict.

No matter what one may think about the settlements in the West Bank, the U.S. and Israel have agreed since 1967 that the settlement issue would only be resolved through direct negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians.

Nothing can be solved through the United Nations who, even before 1967, have taken an overt hypocritical, anti-Israel, anti-Semitic stance against the State of Israel.

Together with the entire world Jewish community, I feel betrayed by our president’s actions last Friday. As a result of their general negative attitude toward Israel, why should the Palestinians negotiate directly with Israel when Mr. Obama has shown them that they can get whatever they want – which is the ultimate destruction of Israel – through the corrupt and terribly amoral United Nations!

Jan. 20 cannot come soon enough for Mr. Obama to leave our White House. History will judge his presidency, but in the meantime, our support for Israel must not waiver.

We must thank our congressmen and congresswomen for their continued support for Israel’s right to exist and we must be ready to hold Mr. Trump accountable to support Israel’s rights in spite of the anti-Semitic political hacks who occupy the United Nations building in New York.

Joliet West hangs on for conference road win against Romeoville

cherron@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – When a team doesn’t play very well down the stretch, but still manages to capture a conference victory on the road, they’re usually content to accept the outcome.

That was the story for Joliet West’s girls basketball team on Tuesday as the Spartans hung on for a 49-44 Southwest Prairie Conference win at Romeoville.

The Spartans (8-9, 2-3) hurt their cause early on by committing several turnovers in the first quarter, which allowed the Tigers (10-5, 3-2) to grab an 18-8 lead after eight minutes.

Romeoville trailed 32-18 at halftime and was still down 40-28 after three quarters before West started having its own difficulties in handling the ball during the final period.

Twice in the final minutes the Spartans were able to cut the lead to four points and got steals but only managed to add one point. They were able to get as close as 47-44 in the final half minute and the Tigers missed two free throws but got a rebound basket to seal the victory.

“We hard a hard time catching the ball and executing,” Tigers coach John Placher said. “We made a lot of turnovers in the paint and also had a hard time scoring in the paint. Luckily we played well enough to win the game. We know what we have to work on in practice. But I’m pleased to get the win, and I think that the girls are pleased, too.

“Romeoville did a really nice job in the fourth quarter of attacking our zone in the paint and everything was

Offensive lineman John Ivlow from Bolingbrook, who is 6 feet 2, 280 pounds and played center for the Raiders, will join his brother Mike, a running back, in the Cougars’ program. Ivlow was a

Herald-News first-team all-area selection and an All-SouthWest Suburban Blue first-team pick.

“JT [John] is another great lineman who chose SXU over some quality D-II schools, and it certainly helped that his dad (Bolingbrook coach John Ivlow) and brother really pushed him our way,” Feminis said. “If JT was an inch or two taller, he is probably getting offers from FCS and mid-major D-I schools. He can play either guard

or center and we fully expect him to compete for a spot immediately.”

Also joining Saint Xavier is Plainfield North linebacker JJ Frey (6-1, 225, Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North), also a Herald-News first-team all-area selection and a first-team All-Southwest Prairie pick.

“JJ is the prototype old-school middle linebacker,” Feminis said. “He is big, physical and completely controls the running game sideline to sideline,

so we feel really good right now in the middle with JJ and Danny Saracco (current SXU player from Plainfield South) for the next four years.

“JJ was a three-year starter and captain for a really good Plainfield North program that had a tremendous season [finishing second in Class 7A] and he is also good friends with Kevin Block [another Saint Xavier 2017 recruit from Plainfield North], so getting two of their best players is huge for us.”

The Tigers proceeded to miss two free throws, but Gloria Choate made a rebound basket with 26 seconds left and Romeoville was unable to score again after that.

“We had nine turnovers in the first quarter and dug ourselves a big hole,” Spartans coach Julio Carrasco said. “We had opportunities in the second half but things weren’t falling. I told our girls at halftime that we dug the hole and it was up to us to get out of it and we made a valiant effort. The pressure we threw at them helped to get steals, but we ran out of time.

“Our starting two post players are freshmen and our off guard is a freshman, so it’s nice to have an 8-9 record right now with a lot of freshmen, but I’m not many excuses because there’s no way we’re an 8-9 team, I don’t care what the story is. We’re playing pretty decent, but it’s just those little mistakes and we need to overcome those.”

The Tigers received five points during the final half minute of the opening quarter from Jazzpher Evans (17 points) to grab a 10-point lead at the initial break.

After the Spartans closed to within 18-12 on a layup from Maria Picazo (16 points), West responded with a 7-0 run with Sarah Gersch (16 points) tossing in two 3-pointers.

Romeoville closed the gap to 25-16 on a layup by Osborne, but Takya Dingle (five points) hit a trey and a layup sandwiched around a layup from Evans to boost the lead to 32-16. Picazo made two free throws with no time left in the first half to make it 32-18.

West led by as much as 34-19 early in the final half and was still up by 14 points after two jumpers from Gersch, but Damia Patton (six points) made a layup late in the third quarter to pull the Spartans to within 12 points with eight minutes left.

Denver running back Kapri Bibbs, a Plainfield North graduate, actually would not have been involved even if the Broncos (9-7) had qualified. He suffered a high ankle sprain and was placed on injured reserve in early December, meaning his season ended then.

He had appeared in all 12 games to that point and had rushed for 129 yards in 29 carries, a 4.4 average, and had caught two passes for 75 yards, one a 69-yarder for a touchdown. In addition, he made two solo tackles on special teams.

Antonio Morrison (Bolingbrook), a rookie linebacker, played in all 16 games and started the final four for Indianapolis (8-8). In his four starts, he totaled 32 tackles, including 17 solo, to finish with 52 stops, including 33 solo.

Morrison’s rookie teammate with the Colts, Josh Ferguson (Joliet Catholic), rushed for 20 yards in 15 carries, caught 20 passes for 136 yards, returned four kickoffs for a 20.0 average and made five tackles on special teams.

In his first year at New Orleans (7-9), tight end Coby Fleener (JCA) finished with a fourth straight season of catching 50 or more passes. He caught 50 for 631 yards, a 12.6 average, and three touchdowns. He was targeted 82 times. He also scored on a 2-yard run against Carolina on his first and only NFL rushing attempt.

Fleener played the first four years of his career at Indianapolis before signing a five-year deal with the Saints as a free agent. After catching 26 passes in his rookie season of 2012, he caught 52 in 2013, 51 in 2014 and 54 in 2015. His career numbers are 233 receptions for 2,785 yards and 20 touchdowns, eight of which came in 2014.

Yet even with a few of our local NFL players missing the playoffs, this area will have some representation in the postseason.

after testing positive for a banned substance, Ninkovich played in 12 games, starting 11, and made 32 tackles, 17 of which were solo, with four sacks and a forced fumble. The 11-year veteran entered this season on a streak of having started 102 consecutive games.

The Patriots (14-2), of course, have a bye on this wild-card weekend. They will host Houston, Oakland or Miami in the divisional playoffs next week.

Tight end Brandon Williams (JJC) is No. 3 on the Seattle Seahawks’ depth chart and is likely to be in action

Saturday night when the Seahawks (10-5-1) host the Detroit Lions. Williams, who played at Oregon after JJC, has caught two passes for 36 yards, returned a kickoff 12 yards and made six tackles on special teams, four of them solo.

Tight end Clay Harbor (Dwight) figures to be on the opposite sideline in the Detroit-Seattle game. After appearing in three games early this season with New England, Harbor was released and signed with the Lions (97). He has played in 12 games for them, starting two, and has caught three passes for 19 yards. He also has made two tackles on special teams.

The New York Giants (10-5-1) will open the playoffs at Green Bay (10-6) on Sunday afternoon. Offensive guard Adam Gettis (Lincoln-Way East) is on the Giants’ practice squad and is not likely to be added to the active roster.

He has been with the Giants virtually all season. He was waived in mid-December and was signed to the team’s practice squad a few days later.

VIEWS Curt Herron With the conclusion of the 2016 portion of the wrestling season, there are just four weeks left before local squads kick off the postseason.

There’s already been plenty of memorable moments as the area prepares for what figures to be another exciting state tournament for both individuals and teams. According to the latest Go Earn it Wrestling Apparel rankings by Rob Sherrill on Illinois Matmen, the area has five teams ranked among the top 25 in Class 3A, with three of those in the top six.

Lockport is second to three-time defending state champion Oak Park and River Forest with Marmion Academy, Providence Catholic, Mount Carmel and Lincoln-Way West next in line.

Plainfield Central is ranked 16th, while Plainfield South is 23rd in the largeschool rankings.

In Class 2A, Lemont is ranked eighth, while in Class 1A, Coal City is ranked third and Wilmington is fourth. Defending champ Dakota is topranked, while Lena-Winslow/Stockton is second-ranked. Coal City figures to move up to second after beating the

second-ranked team, 35-30, over the weekend at the Abe’s Rumble Tournament in Springfield.

In InterMat’s national rankings, Lockport is 19th, while OPRF is 21st.

Montini, which is ranked seventh in 3A

by Illinois Matmen, is regarded as the 28th-best team nationally by InterMat. Coach Josh Oster’s Porters hope to follow up on a third-place effort at the Powerade Invite in Pennsylvania with another strong showing in this weekend’s Cheesehead Invite in Wisconsin.

Lockport, which took fourth two years ago and was third in last year’s dual team finals, is hoping to challenge OPRF for the big trophy this season.

Thus far the Porters are 21-0 in dual meets, with their closest result a 38-20 victory over Mount Carmel.

If Providence is to add to last year’s fourth-place finish, it must beat Lockport in the regional that the Porters host, which also includes Plainfield Central. Lincoln-Way West, which is hoping for its initial trophy in the sport, is favored in the Lincoln-Way East Regional while Moline is a slight favorite over Plainfield South in the Rock Island Regional.

The area should again get two 3A teams to state, unless the Lockport and Lincoln-Way East regional winners meet in the dual team sectional, then perhaps only one may advance. The

Porters already own a 41-18 win over Lincoln-Way West in a dual meet on December 13.

In 2A, Lemont is favored to earn another state trip but Oak Forest and Brother Rice are other highly ranked teams who could prevent that in the dual team sectional.

Coal City meets Wilmington in a dual meet on Jan. 26 in Coal City, and the two see each other the following weekend in the Wilmington Regional for the chance to advance in 1A. Several area wrestlers are in the topsix of their respective rankings.

Lockport’s Trevell Timmons is No. 1 at 160, while other Porters who are in the top-six are Ronald Tucker (No. 2 at 285), Baylor Fernandes (No. 3 at 145), Abdullah Assaf (No. 4 at 132) and Brandon Ramos (No. 5 at 138).

Leading the way for coach Keith Healy’s Providence squad are Cole Smith (No. 2 at 152), Jacob Lindsey (No. 3 at 113) and Trevor Swier (No. 6 at 170).

Jake Dudeck (No. 5 at 220) is the highest-ranked individual for coach Brian Glynn’s Lincoln-Way West team. Sam Diehl is No. 4 at 285 for Lincoln-Way East.

Plainfield East’s Michael McGee is No. 2 at 120; Plainfield South is led by Adrian Cervantes (No. 5 at 182) and Enzo Silva (No. 6 at 106); Plainfield Central’s Jared Ellingwood is No. 5 at

152; Plainfield North’s Matt Hennessey is No. 5 at 195; and Bolingbrook’s Dylan Burnoski is No. 6 at 126.

St. Rita’s Austin O’Connor, who lives in Lockport, is a three-time defending state champion. He is ranked No. 1 at 152 and also No. 4 nationally, according to InterMat. Coach John St. Clair’s Lemont team is led by Egan Berta (No.1 at 145), Kyle Schickel (No. 1 at 106) and Jake Kirkman (No. 5 at 152). Also in Class 2A, Morris’ Cody Baldridge (No. 1 at 182) is the area’s other top-ranked competitor.

In Class 1A, coach Mark Masters’ Coal City squad is led by Alex Friddle (No. 3 at 113), Jake Hiles (No. 3 at 120), TJ Jezik (No. 3 at 138) and Brock Crawford (No. 4 at 195).

Leading the way for coach Rob Murphy’s Wilmington team are Nick Pretto (No. 5 at 152) and Bobby Shields (No. 6 at 145). And also ranked among the top-six in his weight in Class 1A is Peotone’s Chandler Gartner (No. 4 at 170).

Zimmer, Vikings ‘soul searching’ after collapse

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minnesota – All was well in Minnesota as the bye week arrived in mid-October.

Mike Zimmer was zooming toward a landslide victory in the NFL Coach of the Year award voting after guiding the Vikings to an 11-5 record and an NFC North title last season and steering them to a 5-0 start in 2016 despite a barrage of early setbacks.

Then they collapsed, and nobody in the organization took the 8-8 finish harder than the head coach.

“We’re doing a lot of soul searching,” Zimmer said, “as to why we didn’t get into the playoffs.”

Watching quarterback Teddy Bridgewater be whisked away by ambulance after wrecking his left knee in practice on Aug. 30 was bad enough, before running back Adrian Peterson and both starting tackles landed on injured reserve by the fifth week of the season.

Offensive coordinator Norv Turner abruptly resigned on Nov. 2, the day after Zimmer had his first of four surgeries to address a detached retina in his right eye. One of those was an emergency operation on Nov. 30 that kept from coaching the next night against Dallas.

Zimmer, who graduated from Lockport High School, however, denied that his health kept him from doing the job to the fullest.

“I may have worked one hour less than I normally work, you know, after those surgeries. It wouldn’t have anything to do with it,” Zimmer said on Tuesday. “There were a couple times I didn’t meet with the defense and watch some film, maybe a 30-minute session because I wasn’t supposed to look up.”

“Ultimately, I’m responsible for getting these players where they need to go,” Zimmer said. “That’s what leadership is.”

Bridgewater’s return to action remains a mystery, though Zimmer said he’d “never bet against” him. In the meantime, Sam Bradford will undoubtedly keep the job for next season.

“He’s earned the right to be the starting quarterback,” Zimmer said, “and right now all I’m worried about is Teddy getting better.”

Here are some of the other notable developments from the season that will remain relevant in 2017: Treading lightly: With Stefon Diggs

and Adam Thielen producing career years and Cordarrelle Patterson working his way back into the mix, the Vikings were able to bring first-round draft pick Laquon Treadwell along slowly. But nobody would have predicted he’d catch only one pass (for 15 yards), the same number as Bradford.

The rookie was slowed early by foot problems, then missed the last three weeks with a sprained ankle, but Zimmer praised his attitude and toughness.

“You always are going to give young guys the benefit of the doubt,” the coach said.

Treadwell appeared in only nine games and sparingly in those.

“You’ve just got to get in the game, man. Everything else, the plays, will come,” Treadwell said.

Pass-rushing pecking order: The Vikings led the NFL with 34 sacks by

their defensive linemen, with Danielle Hunter topping the team with 12½.

Brian Robison, still productive as a nearly-every-down player, will turn 34 before the draft after finishing his 10th season in Minnesota. He’s under contract for 2017, but could be asked to take a pay cut with the 22-year-old Hunter proving his ability to handle more action.

“He’s probably done enough to earn a starting position next year. I’m very proud of him. He’s done a lot of great work,” Robison said, adding: “I’m worried about wins and losses, so I’m willing to do whatever is going to help the team.”

Harris would’ve helped: The Vikings burned through eight combinations of starters on their sputtering offensive line and used 12 different players among the five spots. That didn’t include Mike Harris, who started 16 games at right guard in 2015 and five games at right tackle in 2014 but was unable to participate in 2016 because of a medical condition that neither Harris nor the Vikings have divulged.

His career has not been declared over, but Zimmer said he didn’t know whether Harris would play again.

“I knew I could have made a difference,” Harris said. “That’s just hard.”

Up next: In addition to home and away games against each NFC North foe, the Vikings will play the entire AFC North and the NFC South divisions in 2017. They’ll host Baltimore, Cincinnati, New Orleans and Tampa Bay and travel to Atlanta, Carolina and Pittsburgh. The Cleveland game is in London.

Their third-place finish will also pit them against Los Angeles and at Washington from the NFC West and East, respectively.

Tomlinson, J. Taylor, Dawkins are Hall of Fame finalists

The Associated Press First-year eligibles LaDainian Tomlinson, Jason Taylor and Brian Dawkins are among 15 modern-era finalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Also making the finals are Morten Andersen, Tony Boselli, Isaac Bruce, Don Coryell, Terrell Davis, Alan Faneca, Joe Jacoby, Ty Law, John Lynch, Kevin Mawae, Terrell Owens and Kurt Warner.

Previously selected as a finalist by the veterans committee is former Seat-

tle safety Kenny Easley.

In the contributors’ category, the nominees are former NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue and Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.

The class of 2017 will be elected on Feb. 4 in Houston. Inductions will be Aug. 5 in Canton, Ohio.

Other than Tomlinson, Taylor and Dawkins, first-time finalists are Boselli, Bruce, Law, Mawae, Easley and Jones.

Most-frequent finalists are Lynch, Tagliabue and Coryell, four apiece. Davis and Warner are three-time finalists.

Coryell, an offensive mastermind

with the Cardinals and Chargers, is in his 30th year of eligibility. Easley is in his 25th, while Jacoby, the left tackle on the Redskins’ offensive line known as the “Hogs,” is in his 19th.

Tomlinson played 11 NFL seasons, nine with San Diego, winning league MVP honors in 2006 when he set a record with 28 rushing touchdowns. He won two rushing titles.

Dawkins spent 16 seasons in the NFL, 13 with Philadelphia, and was considered a prototype modern safety. He made four All-Pro teams and was the first player with a sack, interception,

fumble recovery and touchdown catch in the same game (vs. Houston in 2002).

Taylor was one of the NFL’s top pass rushers for 15 seasons, mostly with Miami. The 2006 Defensive Player of the Year with 13½ sacks, he had 139½ sacks for his career.

Among the other modern-era finalists, Andersen is the NFL’s career scoring leader with 2,544 points, has the most field goals (565) and games (382) playing for five franchises. He made two all-decade teams (1980s and ’90s).

Bruce, Davis, Faneca, Jacoby, Law, Lynch and Warner all won Super Bowls.

game-high 18 points from Christina Ekhomu (JCA) and a double-double from Charnelle Reed helped lift topranked St. Francis (14-0, 7-0 CCAC) to the CCAC home victory Tuesday over No. 14-ranked Purdue Northwest.

Ekhomu led all scorers with 18 points to go with five assists. Reed finished with 17 points, 12 rebounds and six assists for her fifth double-double of the season and second in as many games.

Jordan Giddings tallied 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while Kamari Jordan (Bolingbrook) and Kaitlin Aylward added 14 and 10 points, respectively. Jordan was 4 for 11 from 3-point range, while Giddings was 3 of 4. As a team, USF hit 9 of 21 from behind the arc, a .429 percentage.

JOLIET – Recently retired Cubs catcher David Ross was announced shortly before Christmas as the guest speaker for the annual Brown & Gold Night athletic fundraiser at University of St. Francis.

Ross will honor that commitment, but because of a scheduling conflict, the Brown & Gold banquet will be Jan. 11 in the USF Sullivan Center, rather than Jan. 12, the date that had been announced originally.

The event sold out in record time – about five hours – after it was announced on the USF web site. Director of Athletics Dave Laketa has notified everyone who purchased tables of the date change.

The opportunity to get a ticket for anyone who does not have one remains the same – try to find someone who purchased a table and has an extra.

The Brown & Gold is one of two big sports banquets on the horizon in Joliet. The other is the annual Old Timers Baseball Association of Will County banquet Jan. 26 at the Clarion Hotel at Larkin Avenue & Interstate 80.

Pat Murphy, the highly successful baseball coach at Notre Dame and Arizona State and currently the bench coach of the Milwaukee Brewers, will be the guest speaker. Tickets, which are $50, can be obtained by calling Mike Turk at 815-592-3132.

Sophomore Diamond Presniakovas scored 26 points for South (2-10, 0-4) in the Southwest Prairie loss. Oswego East is 10-3, 4-0.

Plenty of choices, good prices at Diamand’s Family Restaurant ‘Serving families since 1989’ MYSTERY DINER JOLIET – Cabin fever and post-holiday money broke – what to do?

Treat yourself to a $5 breakfast at Diamand’s Family Restaurant in Joliet. That’s what a friend and I recently did. Well, the friend did because I ordered something else.

No sitter for the kids? Well, bring them along. A variety of home-style choices abound. Diamand’s website said it’s been “serving families since 1989.”

Fare from the children’s menu ranges from the typical chicken nuggets to fried perch and waffles ala mode. For the grown-ups, Diamand’s regular menu offers everything from appetizers to desserts and every imaginable entrée in between.

Steak? From chopped to New York strip. Pasta? Yes. Order a simple spaghetti with marinara sauce or get fancy with a Cajun chicken-style fettuccine alfredo. Seafood? Of course.

Go light with a tuna salad croissant or dig into broiled catfish.

And that’s not mentioning the stir fries, burgers and open-face hot sandwiches. From healthy choices to comfort foods, Diamand’s offers it all.

Now back to breakfast.

My friend’s favorite meal of the day is breakfast, so the special was especially enticing: scrambled eggs, ham slice, wheat toast (a change from this person’s favorite, which is rye toast), and an additional side of hashed browns.

This person isn’t descriptive when it comes to food, but I noted the enjoyment with each bite and the fact no morsel was left behind.

I passed on the special and this is why.

My weakness is blueberry waffles (made with fresh or frozen blueberries, not compote). So when the waitress assured me that fresh blueberries were baked into the batter, I was sold.

In addition to my large blueberry Belgium waffle, I ordered juice and a side of ham. The ham was perfectly cooked, but did come out cold, the only blight to an otherwise perfect meal. Oh, yes, and plenty of coffee from a waitress who ensured my cup stayed hot and full.

But if breakfast isn’t your thing – and breakfast is served all day, just so you know – take heart. Diamand’s features other daily specials, too.

No gourmet food here, just homestyle favorites – Yankee pot roast, tuna casserole, macaroni and cheese, salmon patties, Hungarian beef goulash, American chop suey, chicken and dumplings, half roast chicken, Swiss steak and baked pork chops (breaded one week, stuffed the next).

Moreover, based on the week-six and week-seven ultrasounds, the lack of nausea in the women who miscarried was not related to a lack of a viable pregnancy.

The authors proposed nausea during pregnancy might have a protective effect by alerting a woman about her condition so as to alter her diet and avoid toxic substances, which could increase nausea or harm a pregnancy. I’m not so sure about this, but it is a possibility.

In regard to this study, I can understand the worry about your lack of nausea as you enter the second trimester of your pregnancy. But when you look further at the study, you find nearly 94 percent of miscarriages happened in the first trimester of the pregnancy. So as you enter the second trimester, there is significantly less likelihood you will have a miscarriage. Also, this study focused on women who had previously had a miscarriage, so its findings may be less applicable to you.

In summary, I wouldn’t be concerned about your lack of nausea. But please do schedule follow-ups with your obstetrician for your regular prenatal care.

Dear Doctor: I just entered my second trimester without any nausea at all. Considering a recent study linking morning sickness to a successful pregnancy, should I be worried?

Dear Reader: Nausea occurs in up to 80 percent of pregnancies. The cause appears to be related to a rapid increase of the pregnancy hormone beta hCG (BHCG) as well as the rise of estrogen. The nausea can be distressing for many women and can lead to worries about a future miscarriage.

Paradoxically, nausea may be an indication of a successful pregnancy. Preliminary studies have found this correlation, but they could not differentiate if the lack of nausea was related only to an early miscarriage or to an overall successful pregnancy.

A 2016 study in JAMA Internal Medicine looked at women between the ages of 18 and 40 who had a history of one or two miscarriages and who were trying to conceive. Of those women who were deemed to be pregnant based on a measurement of BHCG, 797 eventually became pregnant. These women kept daily diaries, recording instances of nausea and vomiting from the second week to the eighth week of their pregnancy. If a woman had nausea once, she was considered to have nausea in the pregnancy.

In week two of their pregnancy, only 20 percent of the women reported nausea, but by week eight of their pregnancy, nearly 85 percent of women had reported nausea.

After the eighth week of the pregnancy, nausea was measured at monthly intervals.

Also, to confirm a viable pregnancy, the women underwent an ultrasound at week six or week seven.

Investigators found women who experienced nausea at some point during their pregnancy had a 50 percent reduction in the risk of a miscarriage. Those women

Here, West would have had to lead away from the spade king or concede a ruff-and-sluff. (Or, if West had a diamond to return, either the suit would be 3-3 or the spade finesse would still be available.)

However, Hegge foiled the plan by playing the diamond queen to swallow his partner’s jack, what is known as a crocodile coup. Now the contract had to fail.
