Joliet ballot positions set for April

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Council member Brooke Hernandez Brewer’s name will be at the top of the April ballot of 15 City Council candidates after a lottery this week.

Brewer was among seven candidates in line outside the city clerk’s office at 8 a.m. Dec. 12, the first day of filing. They participated in a lottery Monday to determine ballot position.

The 15 candidates are running for three at-large council seats that will be on the April 4 ballot in Joliet.

Candidates often seek top or bottom spots on the ballot with the idea that their names will stand out better.

Brandon Road bridge may be closed for a month

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Brandon Road bridge was shut down Wednesday for emergency repairs and could be closed for a month.

The bridge over the Des Plaines River was closed in the morning for “unforeseen repairs,” said Gianna Urgo, a spokeswoman for the Illinois Department of Transportation.

Urgo did not provide additional information about what was wrong with the bridge other than that “mechanical repairs” were needed.

The bridge may be closed until Jan. 30,

depending on the weather, IDOT said in a statement.

The closing marked the second time in recent months that the Brandon Road drawbridge has been shut down by IDOT. The bridge was closed Sept. 22 for repairs and reopened Oct. 5.

IDOT suggested that motorists use the McDonough Street bridge as an alternate route to cross the Des Plaines River.

IDOT’s recommended detour for motorists needing to go south on Brandon Road is to take Route 6 (also Railroad Street) to McDonough Street, and go east on McDonough Street, crossing the bridge to Route 53 and taking Route 53 south to Lar-

away Road to reach Brandon Road.

Northbound traffic is recommended to take the reverse route.

Brandon Road is one of a system of six older drawbridges crossing the Des Plaines River in Joliet. The other five are downtown. The Brandon Road bridge is in an industrial area that runs along Route 6.

The Cass Street bridge was closed for four months this year as crews painted the lower portion of the bridge before reopening it Nov. 23.

Before that the Jefferson Street bridge was closed for a similar painting project that lasted longer than expected when the need for structural repairs was discovered.

Teamsters claim Grundy County Sheriff’s Dept. practices unsafe

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Teamsters Local 700 stated in a news release last week that Grundy County Department of Corrections officers for the Grundy County Sheriff’s Department are being forced to “transfer dangerous inmates in and out of the jail facility every day.”

Sheriff Kevin Callahan said he can’t comment on the matter because the department is in the middle of contract negotiations with the union.

Evans said that because of the number of candidates who had taken out petitions, he decided his chances to get the top spot in a lottery would be small, and he decided to go for the bottom position.

“I liked the odds better,” he said.

The lottery also determined the order of the seven other candidates who showed up at 8 a.m. on the first day to file.

“In all of the transfers I checked since July 2016 there were never two correctional officers transporting an inmate,” Teamster Local 700 Business Agent Tom Wilcox said.

Callahan said historically the Grundy County Sheriff’s Department has used two correctional officers when the inmate is high risk, or when he or she is being transferred long distances.

Callahan said it is a budgetary issue that prevents the department from sending two officers, and said his budget was just cut by $500,000.

“The first new downtown building in a generation” is being erected at Eighth and State streets and will house a Dunkin’ Donuts and two other tenants, Streit said.

A Holiday Inn Express and movie theater are slated as anchors for the Lockport Square development near Interstate 355, and Panera Bread recently agreed to occupy an outlot, Streit said.

Lockport also expects to enter an agreement with Homer Glen to provide new water mains for some east side residents this year.

“Our business parks and the Sagebrook subdivision are continuing to build out,” Streit said. “And the Fox Hollow subdivision [on the south side near Briggs Street] just recently came out of foreclosure, so we hope there’s some progress there, too.”

LOCKPORT – Lockport will have some downtown changes and “main strip” development in 2017.

The first cosmetic difference is the restoration of the Roxy Theatre’s facade on State Street.

Trinity Services holds programs in the building for people with developmental disabilities, but does not use it every day. The Lockport Area Chamber of Commerce used the theater to host an event last year.

“I think there could be some good partnerships to utilize the theater, but to do that [on a regular basis] the first step will be an investment in the sprinkler system,” Mayor Steven Streit said.

State Street itself will start seeing some improvement projects to set up for “the hard stuff” coming in 2018, Streit said.

“We’ll be updating the utilities and water mains under the street, which have been an ongoing issue,” he said.

That project will go out for bid in June. The upgrades also will make the area more pedestrian-friendly, and a planned quiet zone will reduce the number of train horns being used on the

New Lenox to bring tax rebates, retail development in 2017

bstanley@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – The new year should bring some changes to New Lenox.

Mayor Timothy Baldermann said the redevelopment at Route 30 and Cedar Road will break ground during the spring. Durbin’s Restaurant, Fleckenstein’s Bakery and Zembar’s Jewelry are expected to open in the fall, and a CVS pharmacy also will be under construction.

There also will be more medical offices under construction near Silver Cross Hospital.

“Ultimately, we want to see some restaurants and shopping over there, and [village staff is] targeting those. I think the first one ... will start a domino effect,” Baldermann said.

After nearly 40 years in business, the New Lenox Kmart closed in 2016, leaving a large vacancy at the village’s western border, but Baldermann said last week there already has been an offer for the property.

“I don’t know if the offer will be accepted, but it seems a private developer wants to buy and already has some-

The mayor said New Lenox had the highest number of housing starts in Will County in 2016 with 180 beginning construction, and the same number is expected for 2017.

“And the Village Board and I have kept our promise to never exceed the tax cap, so residents could expect a 75 percent rebate of the village’s portion of their property tax,” Baldermann said.

The village also expects to perform scheduled maintenance during spring and summer on 7 miles of local roads.

The Holiday Lights display and ice skating rink in the village commons also will return next year. Baldermann said the December event could expand with an “outdoor Christmas market.”

Shorewood to improve roads, consider community center in 2017

bokon@shawmedia.com SHOREWOOD – The village of Shorewood has plans for three major road projects for 2017.

Village officials in the coming months also will consider budgeting for a future community center.

The road projects will be: • Reconstruction of the intersection of Route 52 and River Road; • Reconstruction of a 2-mile stretch of Black Road from Interstate 55 to River Road; • The addition of turn lanes at the intersection of Route 52 and Wynstone Drive.

“Those are definitely the major improvements that are funded through some federal grants,” Mayor Rick Chapman said.

The village also will share costs on the projects.

Chapman said the Black Road project “will be disruptive to traffic for a couple of months in late spring and

The improvements at the intersection of Route 52 and Wynstone Drive will improve traffic flow in that area, Village Administrator Roger Barrowman said.

The project at Route 52 and River Road has been let out for bid and should begin this spring, Barrowman said.

Officials in the coming months will work on a budget for the village’s fiscal year, which begins in April.

Chapman said the village will consider funding for a community center, although the plan now is very general.

“It started out at 25 percent. We increased it to 50 percent this year,” Chapman said.

Residents may also want to keep an eye on the northwest corner of Route 52 and Route 59. The corner is under development, and Chapman said the village is looking forward to seeing a restaurant and other businesses move into the space.

Brett Gould coming back to Joliet park board

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Brett Gould is coming back to the Joliet Park District board.

Gould, a former park board president, will be sworn in Jan. 23 to take over the seat held by Glen Marcum before he died Nov. 1.

The park board this month selected Gould from four applications it received. Gould will serve until May when a newly elected commisBrett Gould sioner takes office.

Gould served on the park board from 2003 to 2015, including four years as board president. He left the board when he ran unsuccessfully for a spot on the Joliet City Council in 2015.

Park Board President Sue Gulas said Gould was a good fit for the open-

ing because of his past experience in the park district.

“He is a former board member, and he is familiar with the processes of the board,” Gulas said. “For the short time we’re going to need someone, which is about 4½ months, it will be an easy transition.”

The board only considered applicants who did not intend to run in the April 4 election.

Marcum’s spot on the board was not to be up for election in 2017. But it went on the ballot after his death.

Gould will serve until May 23.

In addition to his past experience on the park board, Gould is an administrator in Lockport Township High School District 205, where he is assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction.

In 2015, Gould ran for the District 2 seat on the Joliet City Council that was won by Pat Mudron.

The union filed a grievance Aug. 24 regarding the issue of officers transporting inmates alone.

Wilcox said Callahan denied the grievance a week later on Aug. 31.

“Since then, the sheriff’s office has continually delayed the process, can-

celing two hearing dates that were set for September and November respectively,” the news release stated.

A union representative met with Callahan on Dec. 12 to discuss the issues without any resolution, according to the news release.

“These officers deserve to be safe while at work like the rest of us, and we will not stand idly by as they are unnecessarily put in harm’s way,” Becky Strzechowski, Teamsters Local 700 president, stated in the news release.

Callahan said the inmates being transferred are not an escape risk, and that they are shackled and handcuffed.

If they are an escape risk there are two officers assigned to the transport, he said.

JOLIET – The Joliet Police Department is seeking to identify two suspects who allegedly were using re-encoded debit cards to make ATM withdrawals after stealing information from people who used Joliet Thorntons gas stations.

“The victims’ debit card information was compromised with a skimming device from Thornton’s gas stations in Joliet between late November

and December of 2016,” according to a post on the department’s Facebook page, which also included images of the suspects and their vehicle.

Thormton’s has Joliet locations at 2798 W. Jefferson St. and 1602 Essington Road.

spent Father’s Day of 2016 at Resurrection Cemetery in Justice – not to visit my own father, but to follow Gary Majewski, Monique Armstrong and Armstrong’s 4-month-old daughter, Kinsley Burns, as the three paid their respects at the grave of John Burns of Plainfield.

“Johnny,” as he was known by his father, Gary, died after suffering injuries during a drunken driving crash in January in Joliet.

Kinsley was born four months after Johnny died while her father’s grave waited for a tombstone.

It was a bright, warm, sunny day in June. The setting couldn’t have been more different than what the small family was feeling.

Much like 2016, the coming year will have its fair share of grief and heartache, but it’ll have beauty, too – all life does. There will be birthdays, graduations, football victories, fireworks and Christmas tree lightings

Brian loved basketball, fashion and was a doting father to his children. Brian was employed as a truck driver at Old State Express in Naperville, IL. Preceded in death by her husband, Armando “Tony” Govoni (1993); parents, Joseph and Ursula (nee Obstetar) Ogulin; two brothers, Joseph and Bernard Ogulin; 5 sisters, Sr. Carmelita O.S.F., Louise, Bernice, Helen M., and Dolores Ogulin.

Dorothy is survived by her good friends, Fr. Jim Lennon and Mary and Joe Babich; caregivers, Nena and Nannette; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

Dorothy was born in Joliet on June 10, 1919 and was a lifelong resident. She graduated from St. Joseph Catholic Grade School and Providence Catholic High School. She retired from Standard Oil Co. after 12 years of service.

Dorothy was a longtime member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Joliet, St. Joseph Altar and

Rosary Society, Willow Falls Rosary Group, K.S.K.J., St. Genevieve Lodge # 108, past president, secretary, treasurer of Cantigny Post Ladies Aux #367, and was the cashier at the Friday Fish fries for many years. She was also a member of St. Patrick’s 55 Club and Our Lady of Angels Auxiliary. Dorothy was a devoted Cubs fan and was so grateful to be able to see them win the World Series. She cared for so many people during her life and especially dear to her heart was Fr. Jim Lennon who was like the “son she never had.”

He was a parishioner of St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Crest Hill. Harry was also a well-known pitcher for the Rivals Club fast pitch softball organization in late 1940s. He was a diehard St. Louis Cardinal fan and loved watching baseball. Harry also enjoyed traveling, golf and listening to music. He was happiest in St. Louis, on a golf course or in the Wisconsin Dells. Harry will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

Actress Debbie Reynolds, 84, dies a day after daughter

The Associated Press LOS ANGELES – Debbie Reynolds, who lit up the screen in “Singin’ in the Rain’ and other Hollywood classics despite a tumultuous life, has died a day after losing her daughter, Carrie Fisher.

Reynolds was 84.

Her son, Todd Fisher, said Reynolds died Wednesday.

“She’s now with Carrie and we’re all heartbroken,” Fisher said from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where his mother was taken by ambulance earlier Wednesday.

He said the stress of his sister’s death on Tuesday “was too much” for Reynolds. Carrie Fisher, who was 60, had been hospitalized since Friday.

“She said, ‘I want to be with Carrie,’ ” her son said. “And then she was gone.”

Reynolds enjoyed the heights of show business success and endured the depths of personal tragedy. She lost one husband to Elizabeth Taylor and two other husbands plundered her for millions. Fisher, who found lasting fame as Princess Leia in “Star Wars” and struggled for much of her life with drug addiction and mental health problems, died after falling ill on a plane.

Reynolds found superstardom early.

After two minor roles at Warner Bros. and three supporting roles at MGM, studio boss Louis B. Mayer cast her in “Singin’ in the Rain,” despite Kelly’s objections. She was 19 with little dance experience, and she would be appearing with two of the screen’s greatest dancers, Donald O’Connor and Kelly.

“Gene Kelly was hard on me, but I think he had to be,” Reynolds, who more than held her own in the movie, said in a 1999 Associated Press interview. “I had to learn everything in three to six months. Donald O’Connor had been dancing since he was three months old, Gene Kelly since he was 2 years old.”

Award nomination. She also received a Tony nomination in 1973 for her starring role in the Broadway revival of “Irene,” in which her daughter also appeared.

After her transition from starlet to star, Reynolds became popular with teenage girls and even more so when in 1955 she married Eddie Fisher, the pop singer whose fans were equally devoted.

The couple made a movie together, “Bundle of Joy,” which seemed to mirror the 1956 birth of Carrie. The Fishers also had a son, Todd, named for Eddie’s close friend and Taylor’s husband, showman Mike Todd.

During this period, Reynolds had a No. 1 hit on the pop charts in 1957 with “Tammy,” the Oscar-nominated song from her film “Tammy and the Bachelor.” But the Cinderella story ended after Mike Todd died in a 1958 airplane crash. Fisher consoled the widow and soon announced he was leaving his wife and two children to marry Taylor.

The celebrity world seemed to lose its mind. Taylor was assailed as a husband stealer, Fisher as a deserter. Reynolds

won sympathy as the innocent victim.

Fisher’s singing career never recovered, but Reynolds’ film career flourished. She starred with Tony Curtis in “The Rat Race,” Fred Astaire in “The Pleasure of His Company,” with the allstar cast in “How the West Was Won” and Ricardo Montalban in “The Singing Nun.” She also provided the voice of Charlotte in the 1973 animated “Charlotte’s Web.” But over the years, her marital woes continued.

In 1960 Reynolds married shoe magnate Harry Karl. The marriage ended in 1973 when she discovered that Karl, a compulsive gambler, had devastated her assets.

Reynolds’ third marriage, to Virginia businessman Richard Hamlett in 1984, proved equally disastrous. In 1992, against friends’ advice, she paid $10 million to buy and convert a faded Las Vegas hotel into the Debbie Reynolds Hotel and Casino. She performed nightly and conducted tours of her movie memorabilia.

“All of my husbands have robbed me blind,” she asserted in 1999. “The only one who didn’t take money was Eddie Fisher. He just didn’t pay for the children.”

In her later years, Reynolds continued performing her show, traveling 40 weeks a year. She also appeared regularly on television, appearing as John Goodman’s mother on “Roseanne” and a mom on “Will & Grace.” Her books included the memoirs “Unsinkable” and “Make ‘Em Laugh.”

In 1996 she won critical acclaim in the title role of Albert Brooks’ movie “Mother.” Reynolds and her daughter were featured together in the HBO documentary “Bright Lights,” scheduled for release in 2017.

Mary Frances Reynolds spent the first eight years of her life in Depression-era poverty in El Paso, Texas, where she was born on April 1, 1932.

Her father, a carpenter for the Southern Pacific Railroad, was transferred to California and the family settled in Burbank, near Warner Bros. studio.

Girlfriends persuaded her to enter the beauty contest for Miss Burbank, and she won over the judges.

Eventually, she teamed up with Taylor and two other veterans, Joan Collins and MacLaine, for the 2001 TV movie “These Old Broads.” The script, co-written by Carrie, was about aging, feuding actresses who get together for a reunion show. Reynolds would look back wryly on the Taylor affair, acknowledging that no man could have resisted her and that she actually voted for Taylor when she was up for best actress in 1960. The former romantic rivals had reconciled years before Taylor died in 2011; Reynolds recalled they had both been passengers on the Queen Elizabeth.

Reynolds received an honorary Oscar in 2015, the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, but was too ill to attend the ceremony. Her granddaughter, actress Billie Lourd, accepted the statuette in her honor.

ROCKFORD – When Ryan Anderson, 12, of Roscoe needed a community service project earlier this year for his sixth grade class at Roscoe Middle School, his mom told him to let his imagination go wild.

“I said, ‘Go ahead. Think big,’ ” said Anderson’s mom, Terra. “ ‘Don’t worry about the money. I’ll fund the project.’ ” It didn’t take long for Anderson, a creative and athletic preteen, to come up with an idea.

“My sister was making some blankets for her friends for their birthdays, so I thought that would be a good idea for my community service project,” Anderson said. “We recently had a family friend pass away from cancer and he was at SwedishAmerican Hospital. ... I wanted to do something with that cause.”

Using seed money from his mom, Anderson bought enough fleece for 10 blankets for patients at the SwedishAmerican Regional Cancer Center.

No budget affects exonerated ex-inmates owed $2.5M

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois’ budget impasse has put a hold on millions of dollars in payments to former inmates who’ve been exonerated of crimes.

Fourteen men are owed a total of $2.5 million as compensation for the years they served in prison before they received certificates of innocence from the state, The (Bloomington) Pantagraph reported.

The payments range from $5,000 to a maximum $220,732. The claims weren’t approved as part of a short-term budget that expires Friday. The payments are based on the length of time in prison.

John Hanlon, director of the Illinois Innocence Project, is urging lawmakers to approve the claims as part of a special awards bill.

He said the money is recognition that the state wrongfully imprisoned the exonerated former inmates.

“This is a unique situation,” he said.

Anderson, now a seventh-grader, is the vice president of his school’s student council.

And he’s enlisted the help of his fellow council members to keep the blanket project going.

Council members usually meet in the mornings, but periodically get together in the afternoon to discuss business and tie up loose ends with the project.

“We’ve done eight blankets so far,”

Anderson said. “We still have a lot of fabric to deal with. With the blankets I [recently] turned in, we’ve made almost 40.”

Once word got out about Anderson’s project, a handful of donations floated in – both financial and fabric.

Anderson and his mom choose the extra fabric together, trying not to use the same pattern twice, in order to accommodate a patient’s tastes.

“We’ve spent quite a bit of money on it, but is there any money better spent?” Terra said. “It’s hopefully teaching him and his friends some wonderful life lessons. It’s easy to do, but it seems to have a really big impact.”

Anderson has received a couple of letters from patients and a note from a community member who wanted to thank him for his generosity.

And he’s stolen the hearts of staff members at SwedishAmerican’s Regional Cancer Center, said the center’s director, Diane Scoville.

“He is such a special young man, we love him.”

Board reprimands town president over middle finger

CHATHAM – Trustees in a village near Springfield have reprimanded the town’s president for extending his middle finger at a public meeting.

A resolution, approved 5-0, said Chatham President Tom Gray’s conduct was “unprofessional” and will only “further divide the community.” Chatham has had problems with water quality.

Gray didn’t attend the meeting Tuesday. The State-Journal Register said he has apologized for giving the finger to a man who was livestreaming a meeting earlier this month.

Student government: Make SIU an immigrant santuary

CARBONDALE – Student groups at Southern Illinois University are asking school leaders to declare their campuses a sanctuary for students who are in the U.S. without legal permission.

Randy Dunn, president of the SIU system, said staff members are studying the issue. SIU has campuses in Carbondale and Edwardsville and a medical school in Springfield.

Brad Colwell, interim chancellor in Carbondale, said a sanctuary designation is “complex and brings with it a number of legal questions.” He said a possible consequence is the loss of federal financial aid.

The Southern Illinoisan said student government groups fear President-elect Donald Trump will deport students, based on his campaign statements.

They’re calling for an “unequivocal public declaration” of support for students from SIU administrators.

U.S. official: Top IS commander killed in Syria Police were searching for two WASHINGTON – A senior U.S. defense official confirmed that a top Islamic State military commander was killed by a coalition airstrike Monday in Syria.

The official said that Abu Jandal al-Kuwaiti was killed near Tabqa Dam. He was a key leader of the group in Raqqa. No other details were available.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said earlier this week that he had been targeted by U.S.-led coalition aircraft. And IS supporters on social media had indicated on Tuesday that he had been killed.

Video appears to show man walking away from cop

DALLAS – A police dashcam video released five months after a Texas officer shot a black man appears to show the man walking away as the officer fired, and the man’s lawyer said he was not a threat.

David Collie was shot in the back, leaving him paralyzed, lawyer Nate Washington said Wednesday.

Police said at the time of the July encounter that a Fort Worth officer fired twice, striking Collie “once in the lower torso.”

Platte County prosecutors charged 25-year-old Khurshed Haydarov on Saturday with the felony, a day after the disturbance along Interstate 29 north of Kansas City.

Haydarov required a Russian interpreter during a brief court appearance Tuesday. Authorities said he lives in Philadelphia but said he’s from Uzbekistan and speaks little English. A judge entered a plea of not guilty on Haydarov’s behalf and scheduled a Jan. 3 hearing to decide whether his $100,000 bond can be reduced, online court records show.

In farewell address, Kerry criticizes Israeli settlements

WASHINGTON – Secretary of State John Kerry tore into Israel on Wednesday for settlement-building, accusing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of dragging Israel away from democracy and forcefully rejecting the notion that America had abandoned Israel with a controversial U.N. vote. Netanyahu accused the Obama administration of a biased bid to blame Israel for failure to reach a peace deal.

In a farewell speech, Kerry laid out a twostate vision for peace that he won’t be in office to implement, but that the U.S. hoped might be heeded even after President Barack Obama’s term ends. He defended Obama’s move last week to allow the U.N. Security Council to declare Israeli settlements illegal, the spark that set off an extraordinary and deepening diplomatic spat between the U.S. and its closest Mideast ally.

“If the choice is one state, Israel can either be Jewish or democratic, it cannot be both, and it won’t ever really be at peace,” Kerry said in a speech that ran more than an hour, a comprehensive airing of grievances that have built up in the Obama administration over eight years but were rarely, until this month, discussed publicly.

Netanyahu pushed back in a hastily arranged televised statement in which he suggested he was done with the Obama administration and ready to deal with President-elect Donald Trump, who has sided squarely with Israel. The Israeli leader faulted Kerry for obsessing over settlements while paying mere “lip service” to Palestinian attacks and incitement of violence.

“Israelis do not need to be lectured about the importance of peace by foreign leaders,” Netanyahu said from Jerusalem.

The dueling recriminations marked a low point for U.S.-Israel relations, and a bitter end to eight years of frustrated ties between Obama and Netanyahu, who quarreled repeatedly over settlements, the peace process and Obama’s nuclear deal with Iran.

Trump, who has assured Israel it merely needs to “hang on” until he takes over, told reporters that Kerry’s speech spoke for itself. It was unclear whether Israel came up in a phone call Obama, while vacationing in Hawaii, placed to Trump on Wednesday morning. Nor was it clear what effect Kerry’s speech, coming in the final days of the administration, might have.

Netanyahu expressed concern that a French-hosted summit next month could lead to an international framework that the U.N. Security Council might then codify with Obama’s assent, boxing Israel in. Yet Kerry seemed to rule out the possibility Obama would take more parting shots, such as promoting that type of U.N. resolution or recognizing Palestinian statehood.

The diplomatic fracas erupted last week when the U.S., in a departure from past policy, decided to abstain rather than veto a U.N. Security Council resolution calling Israeli settlements in the West Bank and east Jerusalem a violation of international law. Israel was incensed, and on Wednesday, Netanyahu claimed Israel has “absolute, indispensable evidence” the U.S. actually spearheaded the resolution.

Changing Obamacare likely to mean higher costs, less coverage Lori Eng, a 62-year-old office manager who works in western Nebraska, sent an email not long ago telling me she was “terrified” she might lose her Obamacare health insurance. The many horror stories passed along in the media had frightened her, and she wanted me to hear from someone who had benefited from the law.

No wonder Eng is scared. Ever since the Affordable Care Act passed almost seven years ago, opponents, mostly Republicans, have vowed to repeal the law and replace it with a different plan. The November election results now make that a possibility.

Eng didn’t have health insurance before the Affordable Care Act came along. Her four-day-a-week job did not provide it, and her salary – less than $20,000 a year – was too low for her to swing an insurance premium. She bought her first Obamacare policy from one of the insurance co-ops that operated in Iowa and Nebraska that was supposed to offer cheaper coverage. It did – until it collapsed. With her government subsidy, she was able to buy a plan for only $50. She also qualified for an extra subsidy to help pay her deductible and coinsurance.

When the co-op failed, as most eventually did, she got a similar plan the next year from another company.

Because her subsidy had increased, she paid only $34 each month. That year Eng was diagnosed with breast

VIEWS Trudy Lieberman cancer, and her treatment, which included chemotherapy and a double mastectomy, cost around $200,000.

She paid just $1,450 out of pocket.

This year, marketplace realities hit home. Premiums and deductibles were going up a lot. She found a plan with a relatively small deductible, but still must pay 20 percent co-insurance on everything until she reaches $2,250, the policy’s out-of-pocket limit.

Other plans had much higher out-ofpocket limits, a risk she couldn’t take considering her health.

“I’m hanging on by my toenails until I get Medicare, if it’s still there when I’m able to get it,” Eng told me.

Because of people like Eng, it’s unlikely Congress will simply repeal the existing law without creating a new plan to help out people with Obamacare policies. What it will be is anyone’s guess. But if it follows the thinking laid out by Georgia Rep. Tom Price, the incoming secretary of health and human services, it might well mean people will pay more.

and eliminating the federal subsidies that make insurance premiums affordable for people like Eng. Instead, policyholders would be given tax credits to help buy insurance. Whether the credits would be adequate, given how high premiums are now, is an open question. More insurance policies would be offered with health savings accounts, a tax-advantaged arrangement consumers would use to pay most of their bills. It would be combined with high-deductible insurance for catastrophic medical bills.

A new plan would continue to let people with pre-existing health conditions obtain coverage, but there might be strings attached. They might need to have been covered for a certain period, like 18 months, before obtaining new coverage. Insurers want to stop people from signing up when they get sick.

The minimum benefits now required for Obamacare policies might become a thing of the past.

That means insurers could offer cheaper coverage without maternity or psychiatric care or other services that will make policies cheaper and possibly more attractive to younger people.

Older people could end up paying a lot more. Currently the law prohibits insurers from charging older policyholders more than three times what they charge younger ones who are

presumably in better health. Under a new version of Obamacare older people could pay five times more.

Keep in mind no health system is perfect. Every system has the same stresses and strains resulting from increasing drug prices, high-priced technology and physician demands for more money. How countries address those cost pressures involves trade-offs.

All countries, including ours, limit medical services, a point to remember when the spin takes over in the Obamacare war. Other countries may have a fixed number of very expensive imaging machines available in a particular hospital or community, so queues form for some kinds of treatments. In the U.S., the cost of care limits who receives it. If you can’t afford some high-priced scan or have no insurance, chances are you won’t get the service.

I’m not a betting person, but if I had to wager on an Obamacare replacement, I would bet it would almost certainly mean Eng and millions of others will assume more of the financial burden for their care.

Indians advance to title game of Medieval Classic

cherron@shawmedia.com FRANKFORT – Usually when a girls basketball team falls behind by double digits after one quarter, there’s plenty of time to come back.

But with the way that Minooka’s defense was playing, the 15-4 deficit that Lincoln-Way Central faced after the initial eight minutes of Wednesday’s game at the Medieval Classic turned out to be too big of a hurdle to overcome.

The Indians limited a Knights squad that had made 24 3-pointers during its first two tournament games to just one 3 and allowed only 12 other baskets while forcing several turnovers to create some offense of their own as they captured a 47-31 win in the meeting of 2-0 teams in the event’s B pool.

Minooka (11-2) advances to Thursday’s 4 p.m. championship against the host and defending champion Lincoln-Way East (7-6), which beat Oak Forest, 58-29, to go 3-0 in the A pool. Central (8-6) meets Providence Catholic at 2 p.m. in the third-place contest.

The Knights pulled to within 17-11 in the second quarter, but trailed 26-15 at the break and never got any closer than nine points back in the second half.

“This is a veteran club, so if we can jump out to a lead with the four really good guards that we have, it’s a lot easier to play when you’re on top,” Indians coach Ray Liberatore said. “We did a great job of defending their sets, which they do a nice job of running. This year, we’re pressing more than we ever have,

“We didn’t get off to a good start defensively,” Gura said. “If we had played in the first half like we did in the second, it probably would have been a one- or two-possession game. In fact, it almost was that, anyway.”

Senior guard Jack Surin took matters into his own hands in the first half to keep JCA relatively close. He finished the half with 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting, three rebounds and an extra dose of aggressiveness. He finished the game with 18 points and seven boards.

In the third quarter, senior forward Pete Ragen came to life, scoring nine of his 17 points as JCA got as close as 38-34 and 40-36. But Parker’s 3-pointer at the buzzer after Chicago Christian held the ball for the final 2½ minutes of the quarter was a dagger.

Ragen, who closed with 17 points, also scored the Hilltoppers’ first four points of the fourth quarter to make it 44-40.

But JCA, which shot 39.5 percent to the Knights’ 57 percent, missed a few shots it had to have and never got closer.

“The kids corrected a lot in the second half,” Gura said. “I think we missed some shots toward the end because we had to work so hard on the

defensive end.

“We knew Chicago Christian has good guards and that we would have our hands full. They had five guys suspended [including three starters] for the first five games. They’re 5-2 with everyone there, and the teams they lost to are good.”

Plainfield Central 57, Argo 31: Plainfield Central (1-10) had suffered tough losses to Aurora Central Catholic and East Aurora to open the tournament.

On Wednesday, the Wildcats breezed to their first victory, earning a berth in the fifth-place game at 4 p.m. Thursday.

“We scored 24 points in the first quarter [to lead 24-7],” Central coach Steve Lamberti noted. “We shot real well and played good team defense.

We also outrebounded them, 36-16, and when we do that, we’ll beat people. We had opportunities to win the first two games here but just couldn’t hold on.”

Mike Hood had 14 points and eight rebounds, Zach Bonomo 11 points and Kameron Williams eight points, nine rebounds and five assists for the Wildcats.

Quick start boosts Tigers in Pontiac opener

Shaw Media correspondent PONTIAC – The first game after a break, especially at Christmas, is a good indicator of where a team is mentally.

Based on how it performed Wednesday, Joliet West’s boys basketball team is ready.

The Tigers faced Niles West in their opening-round game of the 86th annual Pontiac Holiday Tournament, and it didn’t take long for the fans to see that West is the real deal.

The Tigers jumped to a 24-6 first-quarter lead and extended it to 4518 at the half. The 77-53 final was never in doubt.

Joliet West (11-0) will face Bloom Township at 11 a.m. Thursday in the quarterfinals. Bloom defeated Peoria Manual, 61-58.

Coach Nick DiForti’s team got a 29-point performance from Teyvion Kirk, with 20 of those coming in the first half. He also led the team with 12 rebounds and eight steals.

“The last two years we played here,

we had the potential,” Kirk said. “But this year we have the experience, the maturity and very good leadership. We take great pride in our defense, and that really helps our offense. Our coaches preach that all the time.”

In the first half, Joliet West shot 58 percent from the field, went 7 for 7 from the free-throw line and outrebound the Wolves, 24-9. It was as good a first half as DiForti has seen his team play this year.

“We came out like we practice,” DiForti said. “I was really impressed with our play at the defensive end. That created so many opportunities on the offensive side of the ball. We shot almost 53 percent for the game and worked the ball well offensively with minimal 3-point attempts.

“We now have to get them to come out to start the second half like it’s the beginning of the game. That’s our job as coaches, and we will work on that.

In fact, we will have a light practice tonight. We talked a lot about this tournament and how we will treat this week.

Trevian Bell added 12 points, with Tabyous Casterberry putting in 11 along with seven rebounds. Six of those were on the offensive end. Eddie Creal chipped in 10 points, and Elijah Ward had six rebounds to go with six assists.

“Everyone is playing their role well,” DiForti said. “We are really happy with the unselfish attitude this team has. They play as a team.”

AURORA – The Joliet Catholic Academy boys basketball team was in a strange position.

The Hilltoppers entered Wednesday afternoon’s game against Chicago Christian in the East Aurora Holiday Tournament knowing they already were pool champions and had earned a berth in Thursday night’s championship game.

Chicago Christian knew it would be playing in the seventh-place game at the eight-team tournament regardless.

And yet, two teams that easily could go 5-5 if they met 10 times stepped onto the floor to complete their pool-play commitment. On this occasion, Chicago Christian got off to a sizable early lead and never looked back en route to a 5547 victory.

“We were in a funny position, knowing we were in the title game either way,” JCA coach Joe Gura said. “That was evident in the first half. But in the second half, oh, my, we played excellent ball. It was just hard to get out of that hole.”

The Hilltoppers (5-7) earned passage to the title game with victories over Neuqua Valley and Oswego East on the first two days of the tournament.

Chicago Christian lost to both, thus relegating the Knights (6-6) to the seventh-place game.

Neuqua Valley and Oswego East met later Wednesday, but with both having lost to JCA and beaten Chicago Christian, they knew they were playing for nothing more than berths in the thirdplace and fifth-place games.

“That’s why there should be fair pools, not have all good teams in one,” Gura said.

JCA will face the winner of Wednesday’s East Aurora-Aurora Central Catholic game at 7:15 p.m. Thursday for the title. No apologies needed despite Wednesday’s result.

“We’re playing for the title tomorrow,” Gura said. “We earned the spot, and we’re going to try to win it.”

The Hilltoppers had difficulty containing the Chicago Christian offense, especially 3-point shooters Frank Johnson and Malik Parker. The Knights hit six of their first eight from long range in building a 32-21 halftime lead.

Lockport found out the hard way about those two facets of the game Wednesday night when facing Benet Academy in the opening round of the 86th annual Pontiac Holiday Tournament.

“At the beginning of the season, we were a young team and Torch (assistant Rob Torchia) has a lot of specific rules for our defense, so we were kind of struggling,” Brooklyn Bachmann said. “But we’re starting to understand our press more, and we’re a really fast team. Cierra has gotten a lot of deflections and steals, and that’s really coming together.

“You have to give a lot of credit to Torch because he watches a lot of game film and works really hard and knows everything the other team is going to do. And you have to give a lot of credit to the girls for working on it and trying to understand where he’s coming from.

“We have to learn to work hard and execute for 32 minutes, not just small stretches at a time,” Hespell said. “To win when it really matters, we have to get better for the entire game. We’ve played some of the best teams in the state already this year.

“If we can learn from that and believe, we will do just fine. If you can do it for stretches in a game, you should be able to do it an entire game. The good ones do.”

“Minooka is just a hard-nosed team,” Campanile said. “They play good man(-to-man defense) and when you fall a little bit behind, it’s tough to score on them since they really lock you down. We knew with them having a good season that we’d have our hands full since they really take you out of your offensive execution. We’re already a team that doesn’t have a big scoring identity. They did a great job of taking away our point guard and denying her the ball, and that bothered us.

“We really feel like we’ve made progress. We talk about how the Christmas tournament is the springboard to the second season. We’re not just looking to improve our record for seeding but want people to find their identity and have the team jell a little bit more.

We’re going to get Providence tomorrow, and that will be another good game for us, so we feel good.”

“For us to play as well as we did against a great team like DGS, I am very proud of our effort today,” Shutter said. “We are a very young team and to play so well on a defense we only put in this morning is a credit to our younger players.”

“I just tried to create scoring opportunities for my teammates,” DiNardi said. “I hit my shots tonight ,and tonight was a great learning experience for our young team. I believe we are just going to improve as the season progresses.”

With 5:39 left in the game, Drew converted one of two free throws to pull the Celtics within 35-32. The Celtics would not score again, however.

ELMHURST – With one minute remaining in the third quarter of Providence Catholic’s Jack Tosh Holiday Classic quarterfinal Wednesday night, Celtics senior guard Jake Schutter stood at the free-throw line.

With Downers Grove South leading, 31-30, Shutter attempted to complete a three-point play. Schutter’s driving layup brought the Celtics within one and after he sank his free throw, the game was tied at 31.

After being frustrated by the Celtics’ triangle-and-two defense for 23 minutes, the high-scoring Mustangs were content to hold the ball. Senior Tyree Spencer held the ball at midcourt for 45 seconds before running the Mustangs’ final play of the quarter.

Just as frustration set in again, Spencer flipped an emergency pass to the Mustangs’ sixth man, junior Evan Wagner-Talley (five points). All alone

28 feet from the basket, Wagner-Talley buried a 3-pointer that gave the Mustangs a 34-31 lead they would never relinquish.

Led by Spencer, who scored six points in the fourth quarter and 15 of his 19 points in the second half, Downers Grove South (9-2) went on to 45-32 quarterfinal victory.

“We set up the triangle-and-two this morning in practice,” Providence coach Tim Trendel said. “For having worked on the new defense for only 45 minutes, the kids ran it to perfection. The one problem with the triangle-and-two is you could leave a man open outside. Unfortunately, the kid buried the shot.”

The air came right out of the valiant Celtics’ balloon and the long-range basket inspired the Mustangs. Providence (3-8), which had won its first two tournament games, scored only one point, a Mike Drew free throw, in the fourth quarter. Homer eighth-grade girls finish 3rd at state SUBMITTED, STAFF REPORTS

The Homer Junior High eighthgrade girls basketball team produced the highest finish in school history when the Mustangs finished third in the Illinois Elementary School Association Class 4A state tournament earlier this month at Macon Meridian.

The Mustangs, who finished fourth in the state as seventh-graders, finished 20-2 in the regular season and began the postseason with a 51-16 regional victory over Dirksen. They beat Washington, 48-27, for the regional title and Lukancic, 35-22, for the sectional title.

At state, Homer knocked off New Lenox Liberty, 35-28, in the quarterfinals, the third time this season that Homer had beaten Liberty (18-9). The Mustangs lost to Bethalto Trimpe (262), 37-27, in the semifinals after leading at halftime, 18-16. They rebounded to knock off Markham Prairie Hills, 47-43, for third place, leaving their final record at 25-3.

Melody Johnson coached the Mustangs. The team members were Amelia Diaz, Jenna Hernandez, Jada Aguirre, Cadence LaMorte, Eliana Anselmo, Alyssa Holland, Payton VanKampen, Kaylin McCarthy, Elena Knebel, Katelyn Woulfe, Jillian Elsouso and Meghan Bacys.

VanKampen scored 10 points, Hernandez nine and Elsousa eight in the quarterfinal victory over Liberty.

ty. VanKampen scored 17 and Hernandez six against Trimpe, and Vankampen had 27 and Knebel and Elsouso six apiece against Prairie Hills.

In the eighth-grade Class 3A tournament at Metamora, Havana (26-2) ousted Kelvin-Grove, 37-19, in the quarterfinals. Miranda Oesterreich scored seven and Brenna Pacetti six for Kelvin-Grove (19-7).

The Joliet area also had representation in the seventh-grade tournaments as Mokena and Lockport Oak Prairie were in the 4A tourney at Normal Parkside and Lockport Taft qualified for the Class 2A event at Paris.

Mokena (27-1) knocked off Oak Prairie (19-7), 30-12, in the 4A thirdplace game as Sydney Gehrke scored 14 points and Caitlyn Rochon added eight. Dania Sweis had four for Oak Prairie.

Mokena lost to Normal Parkside (26-2), 33-18, in the semifinals, with Nicole Connolly and Jamie Widule scoring six points apiece. Oak Prairie dropped a 41-23 decision to Edwardsville Liberty (24-2), with Sweis scoring seven for Oak Prairie.

In the quarterfinals, Connolly scored 14 to lead Mokena past Chatham Glenwood (22-3), 27-25, while Eileen Ferriter popped in nine in Oak Prairie’s 27-23 victory over Flossmoor Parker (18-1).

Taft (18-1) lost its 2A quarterfinal to Effingham St. Anthony, 31-21. Anna McGraw had eight points and Caley Zurkowski seven for Taft.

Butler hits buzzer-beater The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – Jimmy Butler matched his season high with 40 points and hit an 18-footer at the buzzer about five minutes after being helped off the court with an apparent injury Wednesday night to give the Bulls a 101-99 comeback victory over the Brooklyn Nets.

Butler scored nine points in the final 2½ minutes to rally the Bulls. He finished 11 for 11 from the free-throw line and grabbed 11 rebounds as the Bulls overcame a seven-point deficit in the final three minutes for their second consecutive win.

SPORTS BRIEFS ORLANDO, Fla. – Brad Kaaya tied a career best and Miami bowl record with four touchdown passes, and the Hurricanes finally snapped a 10-year bowl drought by beating No. 14 West Virginia 31-14 in the Russell Athletic Bowl on Wednesday night.

Kaaya completed 24 of 34 passes for 282 yards for Miami (9-4), which had lost its last six bowl appearances. Kaaya already held Miami’s career record in yards and took over the school’s No. 1 spots in completions and attempts.

Blackhawks extend Panarin for $12 million over 2 years

Artemi Panarin and the Blackhawks agreed to terms Wednesday on a $12 million, two-year contract extension.

The reigning Calder Trophy winner will count $6 million against the salary cap in the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons. Agent Tom Lynn confirmed the deal in an email to The Associated Press.

VILLANOVA, Pa. – Josh Hart scored 25 points and Jalen Brunson added 13 as No. 1 Villanova barely held off DePaul, 68-65, on Wednesday night, the Wildcats’ 19th straight win.

The Wildcats (13-0, 1-0 Big East) looked pedestrian playing for the first time in a week. But thanks to Hart, considered among the favorites for national player of the year, they survived.

A 14-6 Villanova run gave the Wildcats a 51-39 lead with 16:41 to go. But the Blue Demons responded with a 14-0 run to get back in the game and take a 53-51 lead.

From there Hart made sure the Wildcats remained undefeated and their home winning streak reached 44 games.

NEW YORK– Justin Jackson ran for 224 yards and three touchdowns to power Northwestern to only its third bowl victory, 31-24 over No. 22 Pittsburgh in the Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday night.

Jackson was the straw that stirred Northwestern’s offense in the Bronx and helped etch this performance alongside the 1948 Rose Bowl and 2012 Gator Bowl victories in the program’s oft-futile history.

China says it’s open to Vatican talks Head of religious affairs: Catholics must be patriots

The Associated Press BEIJING – China’s head of religious affairs said that Beijing is willing to have constructive dialogue with the Vatican but stressed that Catholics should “hold up high the flag of patriotism” and adapt Catholicism to Chinese society.

Wang Zuo’an, the director of the State Administration for Religious Affairs, made the remarks Tuesday at a meeting of China’s official Catholic Church, which includes bishops, priests and lay Catholics, state media reported.

Beijing insists that the party-controlled Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association has the authority to appoint Chinese bishops, a decision the Holy See says belongs to the pope alone.

This dispute over bishop nominations is the most vexing stumbling block preventing the re-establishment of diplomatic relations.

China severed relations with the Holy See in 1951 after the Communists took over, and the officially atheistic government closed churches and imprisoned priests, some for decades.

Worship is officially allowed only in state-authorized churches outside the pope’s authority, although many of China’s estimated 12 million Catholics are thought to attend underground churches.

Wang said the Chinese government hoped that the Vatican can adopt a flexible and pragmatic attitude, and take concrete actions to create favorable conditions for improving relations, according to the official Xinhua News Agency. No details were given of what actions Beijing expects.

The ruling Communist Party has long feared that opposition to its rule could be spread by religious and other civic groups outside its control. In May last year, President Xi Jinping called for religions to adapt to Chinese society, which he termed the “sinicization of religion.”

Pope Francis said earlier this year that Beijing and the Vatican have resumed working groups on the naming of bishops issue and that he is “optimistic” for an agreement, but that it will take time.

Just last week, the Vatican said it was saddened that the ordination of two new Chinese bishops was marred by the presence of a bishop ordained without the pope’s consent.

It also said it was awaiting the outcome of this week’s meeting of the Chinese Catholic Church and hoped it would give Catholics in China confidence in the Vatican-China dialogue.

JOLIET – The Very Rev. Kathryn R. White, the rector of St. Edward’s and Christ Church in Joliet for the past 14 years, has announced her retirement.

Her last service of Holy Communion will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Sunday at the Joliet parish, 206 N. Midland St. White is retiring to Colorado.

That new facility, now known as the Christ Campus, has filled a large need within the Episcopal Church’s Chicago Diocese, and the facility there has since grown steadily, both in number of congregants, and in filling a growing niche as a retreat center by religious groups of many and varied denominations across the Chicago area.

The parish’s associate rector, the Rev. Richard Lundgren, has been approved as the next rector at St. Edward’s and Christ. Lundgren has been a member of the parish since 2006 and was ordained into the Episcopal ministry in 2007. He has been associate rector since that time.

There will be a champagne reception in the Christ the King room of the parish following the service.

JCA chosen for Illinois Theatre Fest The HERALD-NEWS JOLIET – Joliet Catholic Academy recently wrapped up weekend performances of this year’s fall play “The Importance of Being Earnest.”

For the first time in school history, the production was chosen as a finalist to appear at the Illinois High School Theatre Festival, the largest and oldest noncompetitive high school theater festival in the world.

Theatre Fest, produced by the Illinois Theatre Association, takes place this year from Jan. 5 to Jan. 7 on the campus of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

JCA drama director Jenn Szynal has been instrumental in engaging students at the North Larkin Avenue

campus throughout her 11 years as a teacher and nine years as drama director; the family atmosphere of JCA especially shines through when looking at this year’s lead cast members.

JCA senior Shelbi Voss was once a freshman and sophomore volleyball player at the school and has taken her talents to the stage.

Junior Drew Gould was a football/ baseball player in his underclassmen years at JCA and changed gears this year, in part because of what he said is an atmosphere Szynal has created on campus.

CREST HILL – The Joliet Diocese – Partnership in Mission announced the formation of a construction team to serve in Chinle, Arizona. The mission will leave June 10 and return June 23.

This will be a construction mission.

The diocese is inviting men and women who would like to assist local people in building projects for the poor. No special construction skills are necessary, just willing hands and a warm heart.

CPR training just may save a life Dear Doctors: A woman in the mall near our home collapsed and wasn’t breathing. A shopper performed CPR until the paramedics showed up. Later, my friends and I realized none of us could have helped her. Should we get trained in CPR? Dear Reader: Only a small percentage of the population in the United States knows how to perform CPR, so the woman you and your friends saw was lucky. As you can probably guess, our answer is yes; learning proper CPR technique is a very good idea.

More than 350,000 people a year in the U.S. suffer from sudden cardiac arrest, which is when the heart abruptly stops beating. Although heart arrhythmias and heart disease are the major causes of sudden cardiac arrest, heart function also may stop due to near drowning, smoke inhalation, asthma attack, poisoning or even a severe allergic reaction.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation, or CPR, really does make a difference. It consists of two separate components – chest compression and mouth-to-mouth rescue breathing.

(According to the latest American Heart Association guidelines, only individuals who are trained in CPR should attempt rescue breathing.)

When someone goes into cardiac arrest and stops breathing, the first few minutes are critical. Studies show the survival rate of someone in cardiac arrest can double or triple when prompt and high-quality CPR is performed.

So what happens when you perform CPR? Your body needs oxygen to survive. When your heart suddenly stops beating, the biological chain of events that provides you with oxygen also stops. Without that oxygen, cells begin to die. Brain damage can occur in just 4 or 5 minutes, and death in 8 to 10 minutes.

The purpose of CPR is to keep oxygenated blood flowing to the victim’s brain and

ASK THE DOCTORS Elizabeth Ko and Eve Glazier other vital organs. This is done by chest compressions, in which you’re essentially providing an artificial heartbeat. Although by itself CPR will not restart someone’s heart, it can help the person survive until medical aid arrives.

When shown on TV or in films, CPR may look easy. However, where and how you place your hands on a victim’s chest to perform compressions is very important. So is the rate and depth at which you press on the chest, as well as exactly how and for how long you release.

That’s why it’s critical to get certified training. Classes, which are offered throughout the nation, are interesting and easy. The American Red Cross offers classes, and the American Heart Association has a list of other training centers.

You’ll learn proper CPR technique and also may get trained in the use of an automated external defibrillator, or A.E.D. Although attending an in-person class with fellow students and a mannequin to practice on is optimal, a video on the AHA’s updated method of hands-only CPR is available online.

A final thought: Between 70 and 80 percent of sudden cardiac arrests occur in or near the home. Why not make CPR certification a family, neighborhood or even community project? Everyone will be just that much safer.

Because Mom received welfare benefits, she was required to list “potential” fathers to receive aid. After a time, the state required paternity tests be given to the men she had listed, so we had no idea who our biological father was until we were 16.

Although paternity was proven, he never attempted to contact us. I recently learned he died several years ago at a relatively young age (mid-50s). I also discovered he had at least two other children, one of whom I was able to locate on Facebook.

I don’t want to cause any undue distress by reaching out to them. However, I’m curious about any historical information they could provide, particularly medical or hereditary issues I should know about. All of a sudden I have this overwhelming need for information, especially now that I have a child.

Should I try and contact my half-siblings, or let it go and hope there’s nothing there to find out? When you are in a trump suit, the number of rounds of that suit you play may determine whether the door opens -- you make the contract -- or stays closed -- you go down.

South is in four hearts. West leads the spade queen, which wins the trick, and continues with the spade 10. After declarer ruffs that, how many rounds of trumps should he immediately draw: zero, one, two or three?

When North rebid one no-trump, South just went with the known eight- or nine-card heart fit. (North would not have bid no-trump with a singleton heart. With, for example, 3-1-5-4 distribution, he would have rebid two clubs.) In this deal, a raise to three no-trump would have worked fine too, but that was far from obvious with the singleton spade.

Declarer might concede four tricks: one spade, one diamond and two clubs. He must eliminate a club loser. One chance is to find the suit splitting 3-3, but that happens only one time in three. If the clubs are 4-2, South has to ruff his last club on the board. Since this requires only one trump, some players would think that they could afford to draw two rounds of trumps -- but not here. When East wins a club trick, he leads his last trump to kill the ruff.

Declarer should draw one round of trumps, then play three rounds of clubs.
