JOLIET – The Rialto Square Theatre board is planning a special meeting this week to consider an intergovernmental agreement with the city and a short extension of the VenuWorks agreement.

Rialto attorney David Silverman said Tuesday that he had received a copy of the city’s proposed intergovernmental agreement and the plan was to schedule a meeting for 4 p.m. Thursday to consider the proposal.

Silverman said he received the city’s proposal Tuesday.

The Joliet City Council last week agreed to budget $500,000 for the Rialto Square Theatre, subject to the approval of an intergovernmental agreement still being developed.

The Rialto first proposed an intergovernmental agreement in early December,

seeking the $500,000 while outlining accessibility for city officials to review Rialto financial information.

The terms of the city proposal have not been released. Silverman said he would not discuss them Monday as the two sides are “still talking.”

But he did say the city proposal would be on the agenda for the Thursday meeting along with consideration of the VenuWorks extension.

VenuWorks took over management of the Rialto in September. But the company has operated on a $1-a-month contract that lasts until the end of the year as a goodwill gesture amid the Rialto’s financial problems.

VenuWorks officials have said they would not stay as manager without the $500,000 in funding from the city and a plan for erasing old debt at the theater, which stood at nearly $600,000 earlier this month.

The extension of the VenuWorks contract will be a matter of months, Silverman said. But the dollar-a-month arrangement appears to be ending.

The Rialto proposal for an intergovernmental agreement provided that either VenuWorks or another venue management company would run the theater.

The Rialto also sought four years of funding, although the amounts would decline over the course of the agreement. Mayor Bob O’Dekirk and council members, however, have said they would only approve a one-year agreement.

The proposal from the Rialto provided that funding would be given in two stages: $250,000 at the start of the year; and another $250,000 in mid-year if the Rialto staged a targeted number of shows.

VenuWorks has offered 40 shows as a suggested target, but some city council members have said that number is too low.

Plainfield D-202 credit rating increases

fsarver@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Moody’s Investors Service has continued to upgrade the credit rating for Plainfield District 202 in what district officials said reflects efforts since the Great Recession to improve the district’s finances.

The upgrade is the second for the district in two months, following Standard and Poor’s raising the district’s credit rating, according to District 202.

“Both upgrades reflect efforts since the recession to improve the district’s finances following a decade of tremendous growth in the late 1990s and early 2000s,” district officials stated in a news release.

Moody’s stated in a news release Dec. 21 that it upgraded the rating for the district’s outstanding general obligation unlimited tax and general obligation limited tax debt service extension base to Aa2 from Aa3.

According to Moody’s, obligations – or debt – rated Aa are judged to be of high quality and subject to low credit risk. The

The rating upgrade reflects the district’s large tax base with above-average resident income, according to the company. The rating also reflects a “sound financial profile characterized by improving reserve levels and prudent management practices and elevated debt burden that is expected to moderate.”

For Moody’s, factors that could lead to an upgrade in rating include the expansion of the district’s tax base, the district’s socioeconomic conditions improving and further bolstering of the district’s operating reserves and available liquidity.

Factors that could lead to a downgrade in the rating include a resumed tax base contraction, weakening of operating fund reserves, and available liquidity and growth of the district’s debt burden.

Will County locations collecting unwanted holiday lights Ways to recycle Christmas trees

mmallory@shawmedia.com JOLIET – While some have a specific annual routine for decorating their homes for the holidays, others aren’t so detail-oriented.

The same could be said for removal of the decorations. Some take them down within a couple of days after Christmas, while others leave them up until February.

But no matter when you take down your tree and lights, it’s best to dispose of them in a way that will protect the environment.

Will County has teamed up with municipalities that host recurring electronics recycling events to collect unwanted or burned-out holiday lights.

“In the spirit of the season, let’s give the Earth we depend upon a gift by recycling. String lights are one of hundreds of items we can keep out of our landfills while preserving our natural resources,” Will County Executive Larry Walsh Sr. stated in a county news release.

Permanent residential electronic recycling sites are open at the following times and places and are accepting Christmas lights: • Joliet – 5 to 7 p.m. the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month at 57 W. Marion St. • Lockport – 6 to 11 a.m. Tuesdays and Fridays at Lockport Public Works, 17112 Prime Blvd.

• New Lenox – 5 to 7 p.m. the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month at New Lenox Township, 1100 S. Cedar Road.

• Peotone – 5 to 7 p.m. the first and third Wednesdays of the month at the Peotone Police Department, 208 E. Main St. • Romeoville – 5 to 7 p.m. the first and third Tuesdays of the month at Romeoville Public Works, 615 Anderson Drive.

Three county offices in Joliet also have recycling bins set up in their lobbies where residents can drop off lights. The Will County Office Building, 302 N. Chicago St.; Sunny Hill Nursing Home of Will County, 421 Doris Ave.; and the Will County Land Use Department, 58 E. Clinton St., will have bins on hand until Jan. 31.

There also are options for recycling live Christmas trees. The Nation-

Fresh orange slices or strung popcorn will attract the birds, and they can sit in the branches for shelter. n As soil erosion barriers: Communities have used Christmas trees to make effective sand and soil erosion barriers. They were used in New Jersey to help recover from Hurricane Sandy. n As a fish habitat: Some parts of waterways lack a significant habitat, or structure, where fish can feed and reproduce naturally.

Some organizations collect trees for this purpose. n Burning the tree in your fireplace is not advised.

The Forest Preserve District of Will County discontinued a tree recycling program this year after about 10 percent of staff retired in recent years

and were not replaced, district spokeswoman Cindy Cain said.

Christmas trees recycled through the Forest Preserve District were used as mulch on trails and as habitats for fish in some of the district’s bodies of water.

Waste Management will be col-

lecting live Christmas trees in Joliet the first and second week of January.

They are collected as trash, Waste Management Regional Public Affairs Director Lisa Disbrow said. In some municipalities, the trees are collected as part of yard waste pickup.

“It’s all according to the municipal contracts,” Disbrow said. “Some towns pick up [Christmas trees] as yard waste, some are collected as trash.”

The company asks that all ornaments and decorations are off the trees. Additionally, it accepts gift paper as recycling, but not Bubble Wrap or holiday lights, which get tangled in equipment.

When recycling Christmas-related waste, break down cardboard boxes before disposal. For large boxes, Disbrow suggested placing them by the curb in the morning so you don’t advertise to potential thieves overnight what gifts may have been received at your home.

Some municipalities, such as the village of Plainfield, participate in a program called “At Your Door.” For an additional $1.15 a month on a utility bill, residents can schedule pickups of electronics and household hazardous waste.

Sometimes, the best lead for a story is saying it plain – the Chicago Cubs won the World Series.

The curses are broken. This year was the year.

Lovable, yes, but certainly not losers. And it took only 108 years since the Cubs’ last World Series championship.

Up until Nov. 8, the conventional wisdom among the political and media elite was that the 2016 presidential election was Hillary Clinton’s to lose.

Which she did, when voters delivered in a historic political upset that ended one of the most bitter and contentious election cycles in memory against two historically unpopular candidates.

Trump won the key battleground states he needed to defeat Clinton, also narrowly flipping Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania – the last time a Republican carried any of those states was 1988 – giving him 306 electoral votes to 232 for Clinton. However, Clinton beat Trump in the popular vote by 2.9 million votes.

Voters also left the U.S. Senate under Republican control, giving the GOP control in Washington of both the White House and Congress.

Illinois’ budget impasse continues

Come Sunday, Illinois will head into its third calendar year without a permanent budget. But the news gets worse.

An impasse that started in 2015 when the Democratic-controlled General Assembly submitted a deficit budget that Gov. Bruce Rauner vetoed cooled off somewhat when lawmakers on June 30 approved a six-month stopgap budget. That budget expires with the new year, again leaving state government without a spending AP file photo plan.

Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner Rauner, a Republican elected in 2014 on a platform of stopping the state’s downward spiral, has said he will not approve any budget without reforms such as a term limits or a statewide property-tax freeze. Meetings of “working groups” of lawmakers from both parties have not succeeded in hammering out any sort of final deal.

While state workers are being paid and most state duties continue to get financed under court orders, social service agencies are hurting because of chronically late reimbursements.

Police shootings under scrutiny in a dangerous year for cops

Police continued to find themselves not only under greater scrutiny over officer-involved shootings including African-Americans, but also in greater danger.

At least 64 police officers have been shot and killed in 2016, according to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. This past year showed a disturbing trend of officers being intentionally targeted. The United States and the world were rocked in 2016 by Islamic terrorist acts, many of them on behalf of ISIS. A 29-year-old security guard pledged allegiance to ISIS before entering an Orlando gay nightclub on June 12 and killing 49 people and wounding 53 more. Two other domestic attacks – a set of September bombings in New York and New Jersey that injured 31, and a vehicle attack and mass stabbing Nov. 28 at Ohio State University that injured 11 – appear to have been influenced by extreme Islamist ideology.

D-202 officials plan more full-day kindergarten

fsarver@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Plainfield District 202 officials plan to tackle maintenance capital projects, full-day kindergarten and changes to curriculum next year.

In an email, Tom Hernandez, District 202 spokesman, stated that for the rest of the school year, the district will be working on normal maintenance capital projects, full-day kindergarten and changes to the middle school schedule and Spanish classes.

Superintendent Lane Abrell has said the district also will continue to “try to stay afloat or at least again stay even or run a small surplus as far as finances go.”

District officials have said new K-12 Next Generation School Science Standards implemented this school year are one of several changes to the middle school curriculum, which also include adding entry-level Spanish for seventh-graders and shortening class periods to allow students to take additional classes.

Seventh-graders who are now able to take Spanish can earn the equivalent of the first semester of entry-level high school Spanish in the course of one school year.

The next round of the lottery for full-day kindergarten will begin Feb. 9. Families can apply online for the lottery starting 7 a.m. Jan. 17 and ending 5 p.m. Jan. 31.

District officials have said the pilot full-day kindergarten program this school year has “gone very well” and teachers get more time and can incorporate more play-based learning in the full-day program.

The district identified full-day kindergarten as a priority through the 2011 strategic planning process. The district does not have enough space in its 17 elementary schools to accommodate all students for full-day kindergarten.

Construction work for stadium renovations at Plainfield North and East high schools is slated for next summer.

In September, the board approved the renovation work, awarding a bid to Team Reil.

The district has been in the process of installing artificial turf and video displays at all four high schools. District officials plan to use the fields for not only athletic competitions, but school events and activities and use by community athletic organizations.

Crest Hill officials see 2017 road improvements as keys to the future

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Crest Hill officials hope to see economic development with key road improvements planned for 2017.

Some major projects are planned for the upcoming year.

And, developers are watching for the improvements, Mayor Ray Soliman said.

Two intersection projects in particular will be important in 2017, he said.

One is at Division Street and Gaylord Road. The other is at Weber and Caton Farm roads.

“We’ve had a lot of interest in the corner of Weber and Caton Farm from the developers,” Soliman said. “They are waiting for the improvements.”

The project involves new turn lanes and widening of Caton Farm Road. Work will start in the spring and should be completed in 2017.

At Division Street and Gaylord Road, the intersection will be realigned, with traffic signals added

Soliman said the improvements could help spur development of 74 acres at Division Street and Weber Road by improving traffic flow in the area. The intersection is now a fourway stop.

The intersection improvements also should improve truck traffic from the Crest Hill Business Park, Interim City Administrator Heather McGuire said.

“It is a well-traveled intersection,” McGuire said.

Other public projects and private developments in the works for 2017 include: • Storm sewer improvements on

Root Street from Weber Road to Leness Lane; • Water main and street replacement on four blocks of Wilcox Street; • Completion of the Cloverleaf Cold Storage facility, including an enclosed conveyor belt that crosses over a road in the Crest Hill Business Park; • A 14-unit duplex project to be built at Zausa Drive and Division Street.

A major project for the city is new quarters for the city’s public works division.

“One of the big things we’re working on now is getting a public works building for our public works division on Oakland Avenue,” McGuire said.

Construction starts this spring on land the city already owns. The site is the former location of city hall.

Currently, the city administration, police department and public works division are all housed in the same building on Route 30 at Theodore Street.

“We’ve outgrown the city hall that we’re in,” Soliman said.

JOLIET – The traffic signals at Larkin and Glenwood avenues were back in service Tuesday after being out for more than a week. A vehicle accident at the intersection Dec. 18 destroyed the traffic-control box and did other damage, turning the highly traveled intersection into a four-way stop until early Tuesday afternoon.

The city had to order new parts and equipment after the accident.

Joliet Public Works Director James Trizna said repairs were slowed immediately after the accident because the extreme cold weather made it difficult to do cable work without causing more damage. The traffic-control cabinet was installed Friday, but a manufacturer’s representative was not available until Tuesday to make the adjustments to make the controls operable.

A streetlight also was knocked down and a monument sign for a medical office was damaged in the accident. Larkin Avenue, also Route 7 at that point, is one of the city’s most-traveled streets, and Glenwood Avenue is a major thoroughfare, so the loss of the traffic signals led to major back-ups in the first days after the accident. Lines shortened, however, as motorists began to take other routes.

8 juveniles face charges after large mall fight in Aurora

AURORA – Police in Aurora say eight juveniles were charged after a large fight broke out at a mall in the city.

Aurora police said in a Tuesday afternoon news release that the teens face misdemeanor charges including battery, resisting police and disorderly conduct. The fight was one of several that broke out at malls on Monday, the day after Christmas. Aurora police say they’re investigating whether social media played a role in organizing the fight and whether it was connected to the other disturbances nationwide.

Authorities say it took 75 officers from Aurora and neighboring suburbs to regain control of the Fox Valley Mall, which was evacuated and closed for about an hour.

Police say no one needed immediate medical help. They say more arrests are possible.

JOLIET – Wilmington police and a Drug Enforcement Administration task force recently nabbed a man who allegedly stole more than $4,000 worth of controlled substances from Doc’s Drugs in Wilmington.

According to a news release from the Wilmington Police Department, Timothy M. Spisak, 29, of the 34500 block of South Lakeside Terrace in Wilmington, was arrested late Saturday at Super 8, 3401 Mall Loop Drive in Joliet.

Police received a tip that Spisak was at the motel intending to sell pills he allegedly stole early Wednesday in Wilmington. Spisak completed a sale with an undercover agent, the news release stated, which led to his arrest.

Spisak admitted to the burglary, and pills recovered at the motel were consistent with what was stolen from Doc’s Drugs, according to the news release.

Police used social media to circulate several surveillance pictures from the burglary among the public in hopes of identifying the suspect. The department thanked the numerous people who helped lead officers to Spisak, who was seen in the surveillance video wearing a flannel blanket on his head.

The flannel blanket was found at the motel room. Spisak was charged with two felonies – burglary and possession of a controlled substance, according to Will County Jail records. His bond was set at $50,000.

The U.K. votes to leave the European Union

Before Trump, there was Brexit.

In a move that shocked the European Union and the United Kingdom political establishment, the island nation’s voters narrowly approved a referendum June 23 to remove it from the 28-state political and economic bloc. The U.K. currently intends to formally request withdrawal by the end of March, which under treaty likely would mean a 2019 separation.

The majority of voters in England and Wales voted to

leave, while more voters in Scotland and Northern Ireland wanted to stay in the EU. A judgment by the U.K.’s high court is expected in January as to whether new Prime Minister Theresa May, who took over after David Cameron resigned after the Brexit vote, can make the withdrawal request without Parliament’s approval.

While most of Parliament’s members have said they will respect the referendum’s results, they could add caveats that would mean less of a clean break.

Fidel Castro dies

Former Cuban leader Fidel Castro, who led the country’s communist revolution and whose decision to allow Soviet missiles on Cuban soil almost plunged the world into nuclear war, died Nov. 25 at age 90.

Castro remained a thorn in the side of 10 U.S. presidents during a half century of rule since seizing power in 1959, most notably during the Kennedy administration, which tried to oust him in the unsuccessful Bay of Pigs invasion in 1961. The Cuban Missile Crisis followed a year later.

Cuba faced a crippling U.S. trade embargo, exacerbated by the end of economic subsidies from the former Soviet Union.

Castro officially handed the presidency in 2008 to his brother, Raul, who now is 85 years old.

Leaked emails embarrass Democrats, raise questions of Russian influence

The release of hacked emails from top Democratic officials during the 2016 campaign not only hurt Hillary Clinton, but also raised concerns over potential foreign influence in

the election.

Almost 20,000 emails obtained through hacking the Democratic National Committee computer network were given to the website WikiLeaks, which posted them in July just before the party’s nominating convention.

Party Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz resigned under pressure – emails appeared to show a coordinated effort to help Clinton and hurt her Democratic rivals during the primaries. The emails contradicted claims by Democratic officials that Clinton’s rival for the nomination, Sen. Bernie Sanders, was being treated fairly by the party.

Politically embarrassing emails from Clinton campaign Chairman John Podesta were released by WikiLeaks in the weeks before the Nov. 8 election.

Earlier this month, the CIA told lawmakers that intelligence agencies had concluded that Russia may have been behind the hackings as an effort to ensure the election of Trump.

Protesters stop pipeline project, occupy wildlife refuge

Two very different groups of people occupied federal lands using different techniques for different reasons, yielding very different endings.

Members of the Standing Rock Sioux tribe and supporters spent months camping out in North Dakota to protest and block completion of the proposed Dakota Access oil pipeline, which would skirt the reservation’s northern border.

Protesters allege that the pipeline threatens their drinking water and cultural sites.

The Army Corps of Engineers announced earlier this month that it would try to find an alternate route.

On Jan. 2, an armed group upset over federal ownership of western lands occupied the headquarters of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in Oregon. The standoff lasted 40 days, and one of the group members was shot and killed by federal agents when several of them were arrested en route to a meeting.

While 12 of the members have pleaded guilty in court, a federal jury in late October acquitted seven of them of all federal charges.

Stock market hits record highs after a crazy year

The past year was an unpredictable roller-coaster ride for the stock market.

It started out with the worst opening month ever for the Dow Jones, which lost 5.5 percent of its value because of worries over plummeting oil prices and a slowdown in the Chinese economy.

Stocks took another tumble in June after U.K. voters decided to leave the European Union, startling investors who assumed based on polling that the Brexit effort would fail. While investors were sure that the Federal Reserve would raise interest rates in 2016, it did not happen until earlier this month.

Another unforeseen event did not hurt U.S. markets at all. While Dow futures plunged on the night of Nov. 8 as it appeared that Donald Trump was going to defy conventional wisdom and win the presidency, the stock market ended Nov. 9 on an upbeat note.

The Dow Jones is ending 2016 breaking records, and was poised as of last week to break the 20,000 mark.

mmallory@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet police have written no citations and pressed no charges in relation to a vehicle crash Sunday morning that killed a 52-year-old man.

Police were called at 5:26 a.m. to an area near the intersection of Route 53 and Laraway Road in Joliet after a Ford pickup struck Paul L. Loyd, Joliet Deputy Chief Ed Gregory said Tuesday.

Loyd was walking south in the center lane of Route 53, the same direction the 26-year-old male driver was heading, when he was hit. The only witness was the driver’s father, Gregory said.

dark outside, and the area is not illuminated, Gregory noted. He added that Loyd was wearing a dark-colored coat and camouflage pants and misting rain was coming down when Loyd was hit.

Loyd was taken by ambulance to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 5:51 a.m.

The investigation is still ongoing as of Tuesday, but the driver was not under the influence. Gregory said he didn’t have toxicology information on Loyd yet.

Gregory said the driver said that he didn’t know he hit someone until he stopped to check for a flat tire.

Loyd was cited by Joliet police Friday for disorderly conduct. Police believe Loyd was homeless.

Robert was a veteran of the Army Air Force during W.W. II. He retired from Argonne National Laboratory after many years of service. He was a member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, the Paulites and he volunteered through Mended Hearts at St. Joseph’s Medical Center for 17 years.

Alan Foster, 24, died unexpectedly December 24th at Presence St. Joseph Hospital with family by his side.

Son of Kathleen and Lee Foster and Little brother of Jennifer Ariagno, Lee Foster Ill, LaRita Luckey, Geneva Foster, and older brother to Carla Foster, and Joshua Foster. Father of Ryanna 3 years old, Alan was a graduate of Plainfield Central High School.

A service is tentatively set for January 7th, 2017 at Crossroads Christian Church in Joliet.

Alan was a loving and caring person. He was funny, quick witted and always had an ear to listen to any ones problems. Although his life was cut short, Alan’s good natured personality touched many lives. He will be missed by many.

Ursula (nee Obstetar) Ogulin; two brothers, Joseph and Bernard Ogulin; 5 sisters, Sr. Carmelita O.S.F., Louise, Bernice, Helen M., and Dolores Ogulin.

Dorothy is survived by her good friends, Fr. Jim Lennon and Mary and Joe Babich; caregivers, Nena and Nannette; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

Dorothy was born in Joliet on June 10, 1919 and was a lifelong resident. She retired from Standard Oil Co. after 12 years of service.

Dorothy was a longtime member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Joliet, St. Joseph Altar and Rosary Society, Willow Falls Rosary Group, K.S.K.J., St. Genevieve Lodge # 108, past president, secretary, treasurer of Cantigny Post Ladies Aux #367, and was the cashier at the Friday Fish fries for many years. She was also a member of St. Patrick’s 55 Club and Our Lady of Angels Auxiliary. Dorothy was a devoted Cubs fan and was so grateful to be able to see them win the World Series. She cared for so many people during her life and especially dear to her heart was Fr. Jim Lennon who was like the “son she never had.”

Harry W. “Bud” Binion, age 77, of Newark, IL, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, December 25, 2016 at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, IL. He was born on June 20, 1939 in Pickaway, OH, the son of Theodore and Anna (Ferguson) Binion. Harry was united in marriage on April 23, 1982 to Mollie Pike Martin and they spent the next 34 happy years of their lives together.

He was employed for many years by Caterpillar Inc. in Rockdale, IL as a mechanist. Bud was a loving husband, father, stepfather, grandfather, brother, and uncle who will be deeply missed by his family and friends.

TOM E. LAMBERT Tom E. Lambert passed away at Joliet Area Community Hospice Home, Saturday, December 24, 2016. Age 62 years.

Survived by two sisters, Marilyn L. Scholari and Charlene (Bill) Engler; Three brothers, Richard (Judy) Lambert, Harry (Narci) Lambert and Jim Lambert; His brother-in-law, Roy Stuart; Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by his parents, Elra and Freida Lambert; and his sister, Janice Stuart.

Tom was a resident of Trinity Services in Mokena, IL. He loved the Cubs, White Sox and Bears. His favorite performer was Michael Jackson and he enjoyed going to Burger King.

William W. North “Bill” age 78, of Plainfield, passed away peacefully Sunday, November 27, 2016 at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Joliet on March 23, 1938 and was a lifelong area resident. The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to the staff at Heritage Woods of Plainfield and Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center for their compassionate care.

Bill was a graduate of Lockport Township High School, the College of the Pacific in Stockton, CA and he completed one year at the University of Illinois College of Law. Bill also served in the United States Army Reserves.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Warren and Virginia (Ray) North and a brother, James “Jim” North.

Survived by his three loving daughters, Kimberly (Paul) Kalafut of Shorewood, Lisa (Doug) Graber of Castle Rock, CO and Sarah (Jeff) Waddell of Lockport; seven grandchildren, Kara, Chase and Logan Kalafut, Hanna and Max Graber, Ryan and Justin Waddell; a brother, Philip (the late Sandi) North; a sister, Marion

(the late Phillip) Fleetwood; his former wife, JoAnn North and sister-in-law, Carole North.

Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Bill was known for his sense of humor, his quick wit, his vast knowledge of trivia and his storytelling abilities. He enjoyed vacations in the North Woods of Wisconsin in his youth.

Bill was an avid reader, a prolific writer and a collector of all things pertaining to the Old West. He had the uncanny ability to meet and become friends with people, especially the “well-known,” and he loved to share these stories.

Bill worked in advertising and broadcasting, and later publishing. He possessed a creative mind and an entrepreneurial spirit, and invented numerous card games and board games. He enjoyed coaching his daughters in Junior Miss Softball, and later watching his grandchildren play a variety of sports. Bill truly loved and was so very proud of his grandchildren!

A Celebration of Bill’s Life will take place on Thursday, December 29, 2016 at Holy Family Church in Shorewood, IL beginning with a visitation at 9:00 am until the funeral service at 10:00 am. Per Bill’s wishes, cremation rites have been accorded.

Fisher’s one-woman show, “Wishful Drinking,” which was turned into a book, made its way to Broadway in 2009 and was filmed for HBO in 2010.

Little was off-limits in the show. She discussed the scandal that engulfed her superstar parents (Fisher ran off with Elizabeth Taylor); her brief marriage to singer Paul Simon; the time the father of her daughter left her for a man.

Besides her mother, Fisher is survived by her brother, Todd Fisher, and her daughter, Billie Lourd.

Lakehurst, NJ. After his return to the Joliet area, he was employed by Caterpillar Tractor Company where he worked until his retirement. He lived in and around the Joliet area until his move to Andersonville, TN in 2005.

Once settled in his new surroundings, he became a member of The American Legion Post 172 in nearby Clinton, TN. Kenneth was a happy and sociable person with a passion for gardening and working outdoors. He also enjoyed spending time on his boat and fishing. Having found the perfect log home as a backdrop for his hobbies, he soon developed a joy for woodworking and making craft items to sell at the local craft markets.

In the evening hours, he could be found enjoying a nice evening by the fire while listening to classical music. The highlight of his year was watching the World Series when his lifelong favorite – the Chicago Cubs – finally brought home the big trophy.

LOS ANGELES – Carrie Fisher, a daughter of Hollywood royalty who gained pop-culture fame as Princess Leia in the original “Star Wars” and turned her struggles with addiction and mental illness into wickedly funny books, a hit film and a one-woman stage show, died Tuesday after falling ill aboard a flight last week. She was 60.

“Carrie was one of a kind ... brilliant, original. Funny and emotionally fearless. She lived her life, bravely,” “Star Wars” co-star Harrison Ford said in a statement.

Fisher, the daughter of actress Debbie Reynolds and singer Eddie Fisher, had been hospitalized since Friday, when paramedics responded to a report of a patient in distress at Los Angeles airport. Her family gave no details on the emergency, but media reports said she had suffered a heart attack.

SOCHI, Russia – Investigators recovered the flight-data recorder from a crashed Russian military plane Tuesday and began reviewing its contents to learn why the jet went down moments after takeoff, killing all 92 people aboard, including members of a famous choir.

The Tu-154 crashed into the Black Sea early Sunday two minutes after departing in good weather from the city of Sochi.

The plane was carrying members of the Alexandrov Ensemble, widely known as the Red Army Choir, to a New Year’s concert at a Russian military base in Syria.

Meanwhile, rescue workers raced to wrap up their efforts to recover bodies and wreckage ahead of predicted bad weather.

The work has involved 3,500 people, including about 200 navy divers flown from Russia. Aided by drones and submersibles, teams have recovered 12 bodies and numerous body fragments.

Navy to commission USS Gabrielle Giffords

MOBILE, Ala. – A naval program that has become a target for critics is preparing to commission the USS Gabrielle Giffords, named for the U.S. politician who survived an assassination attempt in 2011.

The USS Gabrielle Giffords, constructed by Austal USA in Mobile, Alabama, has completed

testing in the Gulf of Mexico and is scheduled to be commissioned in mid-2017. The company handed over the $475 million ship to the Navy on Friday.

Giffords was shot in the head during a mass shooting in Arizona in 2011 and helped christen the ship in 2015. It’s part of a hotly debated program that congressional critics slam as flawed and too expensive but that Navy leaders defend as a critical new step in naval warfighting.

More Americans retiring outside of the U.S.

Newly widowed, Kay McCowen quit her job, sold her house, applied for Social Security and retired to Mexico. It was a move she and her husband, Mel, had discussed before he passed away in 2012.

“I wanted to find a place where I could afford to live off my Social Security,” she said. “The weather here is so perfect, and it’s a beautiful place.”

She is among a growing number of Americans who are retiring outside the U.S. The number grew 17 percent between 2010 and 2015 and is expected to increase over the next 10 years as more baby boomers retire. Just fewer than 400,000 American retirees are living abroad, according to the Social Security Administration. The countries they have chosen most often: Canada, Japan, Mexico, Germany and the United Kingdom.

PEARL HARBOR, Hawaii – In a historic pilgrimage, the leaders of Japan and the United States took to the hallowed waters of Pearl Harbor on Tuesday to prove that even the bitterest enemies can become allies. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe did not apologize, but conceded Japan “must never repeat the horrors of war again.”

Seventy-five years after Japan’s surprise attack sent America marching into World War II, Abe and President Barack Obama peered down at the rusting wreckage of the USS Arizona, clearly visible in the tranquil, teal water. More than 1,000 U.S. war dead remain entombed in the submerged ship, and in a show of respect, Obama and Abe dropped purple petals into the water and stood in silence.

“As the prime minister of Japan, I offer my sincere and everlasting condolences to the souls of those who lost their lives here, as well as to the spirits of all the brave men and women whose lives were taken by a war that commenced in this very place,” Abe said later at nearby Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam.

That was the closest Abe would get to an apology for the attack. It was enough for Obama, who also declined to apologize seven months ago when he became America’s first sitting president to visit Hiroshima, where the U.S. dropped an atomic bomb in a bid to end the war. It was enough, too, for Alfred Rodrigues, a U.S. Navy veteran who survived the attack.

The 96-year-old said he had no hard feelings

and added, “War is war.”

“They were doing what they were supposed to do, and we were doing what we were supposed to do,” Rodrigues said before the visit.

Abe, who became Japan’s first leader to visit Pearl Harbor with a U.S. president, said the visit “brought utter silence to me.” His remarks capped a day that was carefully choreographed by the U.S. and Japan to show a strong and growing alliance between former foes.

They started with a formal meeting at another nearby military base, in what the White House said was likely Obama’s last meeting with a foreign leader before leaving office in January. It was a bookend of sorts for the president, who nearly eight years ago invited Abe’s predecessor to be the first leader he hosted at the White House.

Obama, speaking after he and Abe laid green-and-peach wreaths at the memorial, called the harbor a sacred place and said that “even the deepest wounds of war can give way to friendship and lasting peace.” It’s a notion Obama tried throughout his presidency to put into practice, as he reached out to former adversaries Iran, Myanmar and Cuba.

“As we lay a wreath or toss flowers into waters that still weep, we think of the more than 2,400 American patriots, fathers and husbands, wives and daughters, manning heaven’s rails for all eternity,” Obama said.

Then the two leaders greeted survivors in the crowd. They shook hands and hugged some of the men who fought in the Dec. 7, 1941, battle that President Franklin D. Roosevelt called a “date which will live in infamy.”

Rural areas need better broadband internet access

There weren’t many points of agreement between the two contenders in the brutal 2016 presidential campaign, but the need to invest in infrastructure offered a rare moment of harmony.

That’s why we expect Congress to put forward a massive public works bill, an issue that should receive strong bipartisan support.

Since Election Day, the president-elect has renewed his commitment to this kind of investment, and his rhetorical focus has been on building roads, bridges and airports, a 21st-century reprise of the massive interstate highway system project started during the Eisenhower administration.

That kind of investment is important, but the new administration should not stop there. It’s time for a real 21st-century infrastructure program, one that focuses on bringing high-speed, broadband internet to rural areas.

Reliable internet service is as important to economic development today as the highway system was in the 1950s. Connecting rural areas to the world creates business opportunities in places that have lost traditional jobs. More people move to areas that have high-speed internet capacity, and they often bring jobs with them.

Broadband investment also provides more opportunities to start new businesses, and not just ones in “tech” fields. Retail, hospitality, agriculture, medicine and a wide range of other enterprises rely on their ability to share information quickly and dependably.

A strong commitment to rural infrastructure would bring the economic recovery into areas that have been left behind during the economic recovery that started in 2009. Places such as rural Maine that have been hit hard by a loss of manufacturing jobs would benefit more from investment in high-speed internet in their towns than they would from expensive airport overhauls in New York or Boston.

Internet expansion has a proven impact on economic development. According to a study by the Information & Technology and Innovation Foundation, 250,000 jobs are created for every $5 billion in infrastructure development; with every percentage point increase in new broadband distribution, employment expands by 300,000 jobs.

Maine was the beneficiary of a major investment in broadband infrastructure with the 2012 construction of the Three Ring Binder, a 1,100-mile system of fiber-optic cable that was built with a $25.4 million federal grant and $7 million in private investment. The project provides the core of a 10-gigabit network that serves 110,000 homes, but it passes by many more that don’t have the ability to connect.

“It’s like having a highway with no exit ramps,” said Maine Sen. Angus King, an advocate for rural broadband expansion. “We’ve got a tremendous backbone, but we need to solve the ‘last-mile’ problem.”

Shaw Media Correspondent ELMHURST – In all three of the Minooka boys basketball losses, shot availability was the major problem.

In their Southwest Prairie Conference losses to Joliet West and Joliet Central, the Tigers’ and Steelmen’s superior athletes denied the Indians an open shot. When the rare open look occurred, the Indians rushed the shot and misfired.

In a 50-28 Jack Tosh Holiday Classic second-round loss Tuesday to Wheaton North, shot availability after the first quarter was limited for the Indians. After allowing Minooka four first-quarter baskets, the Wheaton North defense put a stranglehold on the Indians’ offense.

In the last three quarters, Minooka scored six field goals. The Indians were 5 of 16 in the first half, trailing 2014. The second half was worse as they went 5 for 21 for an overall shooting day of 27.7 percent.

Jonny Butler, who had five first-quarter points, scored a bucket late in the fourth quarter, for a seven-point night. Brian Hill scored five off the bench and the biggest bright spot for the Indians was the outstanding play of junior Adrian Paige.

With the Indians down, 25-14, with 3:20 in the third quarter, Paige’s first basket ended an all-too-common event for Minooka at York, a seven-minute, 22-second scoring drought. Paige struck for three more points, pulling the Indians within 25-19 with 2:00 left in the third quarter. Wheaton North then scored the final four points of the quarter for a 29-19 lead.

Hope missed the front end of a one-and-one with 41 seconds left, and Romeoville’s DeAndre Heckard had a driving layup go in and out. Hope missed again on the foul line, and Johnson scored a layup and free throw to make it 57-56 with 28 seconds to go.

Hope’s Jamari McClendon made two free throws with 21 seconds remaining for a 59-56 lead. Whitaker then took a pass in the right corner and hit what would have been the tying 3-pointer, but he was ruled to have stepped out of bounds and come back inbounds to receive the pass, so Romeoville turned it over.

McClendon clinched it with a free throw and Whitaker ended the scoring with a putback at the buzzer.

“That was a tough one when Whitaker stepped out and came back in and took the pass,” Howard said. “But we shouldn’t have been in that situation.

“This was a weird game. We played well in spurts. We had a very inconsistent effort, especially defensively.

Then we got some good looks when we needed baskets, and we couldn’t make them fall.”

“We used a lot of energy trying to fight back into the game,” Johnson said. “We never should have gotten in a hole like that.”

Johnson hit 7 of 16 shots and 5 of 6 free throws for his 19 points. He scored 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the second half to help the Spartans make it interesting.

“I’ve been working on my rebounding a lot,” Johnson said. “It’s paying off.”

“Dontia’s doing a better job inside scoring and rebounding,” Howard said. “We wanted to get the ball in to him and get these guys [Eagles] to double down on him. We were hoping that would help our outside game.”

The results in that regard were mixed. Salter’s hot second quarter notwithstanding, Romeoville, which plays at 3 p.m. Wednesday against the Marshall-Michigan City loser, finished only 4 of 16 from 3-point range.

Salter closed with 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting.

Joliet Catholic wins 2nd straight at East Aurora tourney

cherron@shawmedia.com AURORA – Joliet Catholic Academy senior Pete Ragen felt that his team’s trip to the 51st annual East Aurora Holiday Tournament was critical to how they’ll do the rest of the season.

And halfway through the competition, the Hilltoppers have moved a step closer to playing in the championship game after capturing a second straight quality win on Tuesday.

JCA grabbed a 20-10 halftime lead over Oswego East and didn’t allow the Wolves to get closer than three points back after that as it claimed a 48-44 victory at Kivisto gym.

Ragen scored 18 of his game-high 22 points in the final half with 10 of those coming at the free-throw line and he added six rebounds to lead the Hilltoppers (5-6), who face 0-2 Chicago Christian at 4 p.m. Wednesday. Neuqua Valley and East are 1-1 in pool play.

“The first half was our type of basketball,” Ragen said. “We want to slow down teams and play our style, which is defensively. We need to make stops and we did that and we played team basketball, which is what coach is

stressing. We got off to a rough start this season and hit a little bit of a hump in the beginning, but since then, we’ve become a stronger team.

“Some of our guys really didn’t get a lot of playing time last year, but this year they’ve stepped up and made plays when we needed them to. We knew that we should have had some of those close ones that we lost. I like our togetherness and how we’ve always stuck together. This tournament has been huge. It was kind of a makeor-break part of our season, and we’re definitely on the right path now.”

After seeing his squad lose six contests by a combined 28 points, JCA coach Joe Gura is delighted to see them finding ways to win close games.

It was especially enjoyable to defeat the Wolves (8-2), who had won eight straight.

“We have a group of kids where not a lot of them played last season,” Gura said. “So they had to find their legs and sometimes when you haven’t played a lot, you try to do too much in pressure situations. What I like about my kids is that after coming off a tough loss at Lockport, we could have tanked, but they didn’t, they stuck with the program.

“The mark of a program is that when you lose 95 percent of your scoring and come back and you’re competitive, that’s what I want to establish here and these kids are the reason that it’s being established. It’s not easy to lose those early games the way that we did and play so hard and then come back and play the same types of games here against good opponents.”

The Hilltoppers led 10-6 after one quarter and were still up 12-8 early in the next period when Ragen hit a free throw, Jack Surin (10 points, eight rebounds) added a layup and a free throw, Dexter Spencer (seven points, nine rebounds) converted an old-fashioned three-point play and Donavan Finch (five points, seven rebounds) hit a free throw for a 20-8 lead.

East began its comeback by getting

a basket late in the first half and closed to within 28-25 in the third quarter before Ragen and Brendon Wills hit layups and Spencer got a rebound basket to give the Hilltoppers a 34-25 lead with one quarter left.

But the Wolves kept battling and pulled to within 40-35 with 1:27 left following two 3-pointers from Trent Taylor and a layup from Andre Hughes (14 points). However, Finch made two free throws and Ragen added six more charity tosses after that to end things.

“This was exciting,” Spencer said.

“Early in the season we struggled but this tournament is really a turnaround for us. Yesterday we had a really big game against Neuqua and this was a huge confidence boost for us going into tomorrow’s game. Our chemistry is getting a lot better so I can see us having a turning point so we continue to get wins this season.

“I like our camaraderie and our chemistry is great. And we’re the underdogs. We’re not big in size, but we come out ready to play and teams don’t expect us to win. After the half, they came at us really tough, but we just executed late in the game and pulled away with the ‘W’.”

RICHTON PARK – Chicago Hope Academy entered Tuesday afternoon’s quarterfinal battle against Romeoville in the 44th annual Rich South Big Dipper Tournament with a sterling 9-2 record.

The Eagles’ only losses had been to Fenwick and Westinghouse, and they feel they could have – make that should have – won both of those games.

And yet, following Hope’s 60-58 victory over Romeoville, it was the Spartans who came away bitterly disappointed. This was one of those games against a quality opponent they feel they should have placed in the win column.

“We expect to win every game,” said Romeoville 6-foot-7 junior forward Dontia Johnson, who finished with 19 points and 13 rebounds. “We’ve got to get the ‘W’, that’s the most important part. If we play like we are supposed to, we can beat anybody. If we don’t, it doesn’t work out well for us.”

Hope (10-2) got off to a quick start,

leading 18-6 late in the first quarter and 31-18 with 3 minutes 10 seconds left in the first half. But two baskets by Aaron Stevenson off the bench got Romeoville (5-6) back into the fray. When sophomore guard Mike Salter nailed his third 3-pointer of the second quarter seconds before halftime, the Spartans had crawled back within 33-27.

“Sometime we make it harder than it needs to be,” Romeoville coach Marc Howard said. “If we had played with the right energy early on, it probably wouldn’t have been the way it was at the end.”

The Spartans got as close as 35-34, 40-38 and 42-41 in a third quarter that ended with Hope on top, 46-41. In the fourth quarter, Romeoville battled to within 46-44 and 51-50 with 3:52 left.

But the Eagles never relinquished the lead.

After Hope’s Javion May scored a traditional three-point play with 56 seconds remaining to make it 5750, Howard called a timeout and set up a 3-point shot for freshman Destin Whitaker. He buried it with 50 seconds on the clock to slice the deficit to 57-53.

St. Xavier’s Feminis adds more local talent SUBMITTED REPORT CHICAGO – Mike Feminis is not only a former All-American linebacker at University of St. Francis, but also a Plainfield resident.

As head football coach of the highly successful NAIA program at Saint Xavier, he always places the Joliet area among his favorite recruiting destinations.

In preparation for the 2017 season, Feminis has announced his first group of signings for his current recruiting class. The Cougars have received commitments from six Joliet area standouts, four coming out of high school and two transfers.

Incoming freshman defensive back and kick and punt returner Kevin Block (6-0, 175 pounds, Plainfield North) was an Illinois High School Football Coaches Association honor-

able mention all-state selection and the Herald-News Defensive Player of the Year.

“We now have three of the last four Joliet Herald-News Players of the Year on our roster (Block, running back Mike Ivlow and quarterback Justin Hunniford), which is incredible when you think about how many great football players and programs there are in that area,” Feminis said.

“Kevin had some FCS interest and chose SXU over some quality D-II programs. We’ve been working hard on him since August and we expect Kevin to help immediately. Cover corners are hard to find and he’s also an exceptional punt and kick returner.”

Incoming freshman kicker/punter Kyle Hassert (5-11, 160, Plainfield East) joined Block as a Herald-News All-Area first-team selection.

“Kyle was one of the top kickers in

the area and he does both (placekicker and punter), so it’s like getting two guys in one, which is a nice luxury,” Feminis said.

Offensive lineman John Ivlow (6-2, 280, Bolingbrook), also a Herald-News All-Area first-team pick, will join his older brother in the Cougars’ fold.

Incoming freshman defensive back/linebacker Sam Nasca (5-10, 195, Bolingbrook) was a Herald-News All-Area third-team selection.

“Sam was our first commitment and he is a high energy, tough kid who can play outside linebacker or strong safety,” Feminis said. “He’ll also contribute on special teams right away, so we’re excited to get him.”

Junior quarterback transfer Hunniford (5-10, 180, North Central, Providence Catholic) was the Herald-News Offensive Player of the Year after leading the Celtics to the 2014 Class 7A state

championship.

“Justin had a shoulder injury but should be 100 percent for spring ball so it’s great we’re getting him in January,” Feminis said. “We now have two outstanding quarterbacks (Alex Martinez is the other) who are perfect fits for our system.

“Both Alex and Justin have similar characteristics that remind me of Anthony Kropp (former Saint Xavier quarterback from Lincoln-Way East), who was one of our best. It will be fun watching these two compete.”

Junior defensive back transfer Brenton Johnson (5-7, 160, Bolingbrook, Culver Stockton/Bolingbrook) also is joining the Cougars.

“Brenton has significant college experience and will be a nice addition to our secondary,” Feminis continued.

“He should compete at corner and nickel right away.”

CHICAGO – Blake Wheeler, Mark Scheifele and Drew Stafford scored and Connor Hellebuyck made 34 saves to help the Winnipeg Jets beat the Blackhawks, 3-1, on Tuesday night.

Jacob Trouba added two assists, and Winnipeg won its second straight and fourth in five games. The Jets beat the Central Division-leading Hawks for the third time in three tries this season, outscoring them, 9-2, over those games.

Artem Anisimov scored his 15th goal in his return from missing three games with an upper-body injury, but the Hawks lost their third straight for the first time since last March.

Corey Crawford blocked 31 shots in his second start since returning from an appendectomy that cost him 10 games.

With an assist, Artemi Panarin stretched his career-best points streak to eight games. He has five goals and 14 points during the run.

Right wing Marian Hossa missed his second straight game after being placed on injured reserve retroactive to Dec. 20. The 37-year-old forward, who leads the Hawks with 16 goals, has been out since suffering an upper-body

injury early in a loss to Ottawa a week ago.

Both teams had several prime chances in the first period. While the Hawks shot wide several times, the Jets cashed in on two opportunities to build a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes.

Wheeler opened the scoring 8:27 in when he cut across the crease and popped in a rebound of Bryan Little’s deflection. Crawford reacted quickly to stop Little’s tip of Trouba’s drive from the point off a faceoff but couldn’t reset in time for Wheeler’s shot.

Scheifele made it 2-0 with 5:12 left in the first with his 15th goal when he parked in front and deflected Trouba’s screened drive from the right point.

Anisimov, who jumped right back onto his regular line with Patrick Kane and Panarin, clicked perfectly with Kane at 7:37 of the second to cut it to 2-1.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Melo Trimble scored 20 points and Jaylen Brantley added 13 as Maryland routed Illinois, 84-59, on Tuesday in the Big Ten opener for both teams.

It was the sixth victory in a row for the Terrapins (13-1), who have won their conference opener in all three seasons since joining the Big Ten. Malcolm Hill had 21 points for the Illini (10-4), who saw their six-game winning streak come to an end.

Maryland played without two of its top post players. Junior Michal Cekovsky rested a left ankle injury, and senior Damonte Dodd missed his fifth consecutive game with a sprained left knee ligament.

Their absences mattered little against the Illini, who never led and were outscored, 48-24, in the paint. It also provided an opportunity for Maryland graduate transfer L.G. Gill, who matched a season-high with seven rebounds.

After both teams struggled with turnovers in the early moments, Maryland uncorked a 10-0 run to seize a

Morris Chop Shop is seriously good food

By MYSTERY DINER MORRIS – Downtown Morris has a unique, homey feel with all of its shopping options.

But heading to the Morris Chop Shop, I was uncertain what to expect.

Judging from the website, employees were serious about their food and ingredients.

Upon arrival, it was clear they were serious about their service too.

We showed up in the early afternoon, not a busy time by any means, and the service was quick and professional as we were led to a booth in one of several large dining areas.

I’m told that groups, including the Morris Rotary Club, meet in one of the other rooms regularly.

Even holding the firm menu in my hands, it was clear the Chop Shop has done the work to be a fine dining establishment.

They pride themselves on locally sourced ingredients, and you can get anything from a reasonable lunch item to a $50 20-ounce porterhouse steak.

Since we were there for lunch, we went for the reasonable options, testing out a few unique appetizers too. We started with candied bacon and cigars, which have pulled rotisserie chicken, black beans, sweet corn, scallions, Monterey Jack with chipotle-apricot aioli in two large cigar-shaped shells.

It was a great place to start, though eating two of those also put a bit of a dent in my hunger.

The candied bacon was the perfect sweet and tasty option, with its brown sugar and chipotle glaze, to set us up for the main course. It was crispy, sweet but not too sweet, and perfect to bring home some for another treat later.

As for the main course, it’s clear you can’t go wrong with the burger and the portion size. The burger came perfectly cooked and was as tasty and juicy as you can imagine with a rather large baked potato on the side.

That was what my dining partner ordered.

I figured I’d go away from the norm a bit with a daily special, the soft shell crab sandwich. The server had the list of daily specials on a tablet that he left at the table so we could decide.

I’m the type of person who is many times skeptical of going after seafood when I’m in middle America with

winter approaching. It just is hard to imagine that food getting here efficiently or an ocean at a time like this.

But wow, was I wrong.

The sandwich was outstanding, as I mentioned earlier they’re serious about their ingredients, and took me away to weeks spent on vacation a lot closer to the beach. And the smashed red potatoes on the side were the right choice too.

I wasn’t in the mood for fries and I was happy I chose something different.

I was also happy I headed to downtown Morris that day, despite the fact the weather all around was getting a lot colder.

Inside, we found a relaxed atmosphere with top-of-the-line service and a menu so diverse I could have ordered anything from a smoked brisket gyro to a Maine lobster and wedge

sandwich, from Ahi Tuna Hawaiian Poke as an appetizer to a filet sliders trio, watermelon bruschetta or Maryland crab cakes on the appetizer menu or even fresh shucked oysters.

The menu leaves you with options for most tastes, including seven different salads, using fresh ingredients from local family farmers.

And it will also likely leave you

happy you made the trip.

Again, this appears to be related to fish oil’s potential protective effect against abnormal heart rhythms after a heart attack.

Fish oil hasn’t been shown to decrease the chance of a stroke. Nor has it been shown to decrease the risk or incidence of cancer. In fact, some studies have shown a correlation between fish oil and prostate cancer, but other studies have failed to support that connection.

In summary, fish oil does appear to decrease the chance of sudden cardiac death, but you don’t need to take capsules to see this benefit. Eating fish twice a week can do that.

Before you turn to eating tuna fish from a can, keep in mind tuna has much less omega-3 fatty acids than Atlantic salmon, mackerel or herring. If you don’t care for fish, taking 1 gram of a fish oil supplement twice a week likely will yield a benefit. If you’ve had a heart attack, consider taking 1 gram of fish oil a day.

Dear Doctor: I have been taking fish oil capsules daily the past five years. Is there any benefit in doing this?

Dear Reader: The short answer is “maybe.” Scientists have shown societies with higher fish intake have lower rates of heart disease. The belief is this benefit comes from fish oil. Fish oil contains substances known as long-chain fatty acids (omega-3 fatty acids), specifically DHA, DPA and EPA, with many health benefits.

These fatty acids help lower blood triglyceride levels; lower blood pressure (by 1.5 to 4 points); and have an ability to help the heart relax so blood flows more easily into its chambers. Furthermore, the omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil also have been linked to a slightly slower heart rate and to a decrease in inflammation.

Small studies have shown fish oil might be linked to a slight reduction in the formation of plaque in the arteries that supply the heart, but evidence of its ability to reduce the rates of heart attack hasn’t been as robust or as statistically significant.

One fish oil finding that was indeed statistically significant was from a large study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 2006.

That study linked fish oil intake of 250 milligrams per day to a 36 percent reduction in rates of sudden cardiac death.

That amount – 250 mg of fish oil – equals one to two servings of fish per week.

One other property fish oil might have is an ability to reduce electrical excitability of the heart. That reduced excitability may decrease the heart’s chances of going into an abnormal rhythm, which can lead to death. Furthermore, among people who have had a heart attack, 1 gram of fish oil per day has been linked to a significant

When North raised hearts, South decided to keep his spade support up his sleeve, which worked to his advantage in the play. He jumped immediately into Blackwood.

If West had led the diamond ace, it would have killed the slam; but that was not obvious.

Declarer won the first trick with dummy’s club ace and dropped his queen under it. Then he took his two top trumps to learn that he had a loser there. How could he also avoid conceding a diamond?

In theory, South had to find East with three or four spades. But, as you can see, he had only a doubleton.

Declarer spotted a ruse. He played a spade to dummy’s queen, feigning the finesse, cashed the spade ace and continued with a third spade. To East, it looked as though South was about to ruff, so that he did not need to “waste” his trump trick. However, after East discarded, South produced the spade king from his back pocket, overtook the club 10 with dummy’s jack and pitched his diamond king on the spade seven.

East probably should not have fallen for declarer’s deception, but it was delightfully deft.

As filed, these proposed revisions do not propose any change to ComEd's allowed delivery service net revenue requirement. For the Commission's information, ComEd has included with its filing illustrative calculations that could affect cost allocation to ComEd's delivery service classes.

Customers should be advised that the Commission may alter or amend the rates or conditions of service after hearings held pursuant to Section 16-108.5 of the Act and 83 Ill. Adm. Code 200 which may increase or decrease individual rates in amounts other than those requested by ComEd. Because the nature of such potential alterations or amendments, if any, the impact to any customer's electric bill cannot be known.

A copy of the proposed tariffs, as well as other materials filed with the Commission in connection therewith, is on file at ComEd's office located at Three Lincoln Centre in Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois, and open to public inspection.
