D-204 officials plan to diversify staff, further support students, community

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet High School District 204 officials will be pursuing a series of initiatives next year that will increase the diversity of its staff, further support underperforming students, promote teaching and foster a culturally sensitive and responsive environment.

The initiatives are action plans part of a new strategy – addressing culturally responsive education and staff diversity – in the district’s strategic plan that were approved by the board in a 5-0 vote Dec. 20. Board member R. Dale Evans was absent and Tyler Marcum resigned after being elected to the Will County Board.

The plans were formulated by the largest action team in the district’s history of strategic planning and it was led by former Joliet Junior College president J.D. Ross and Joliet West High School Assistant Principal Jo Wooten, district officials said.

“We are shaping the future of the district,” said Cheryl McCarthy, the district’s superintendent, said at the Dec. 20 meeting.

Residents had complained in February about the diversity of the district’s staff and its hiring practices. District officials delivered a presentation in March on their hiring practices and the demographics of the staff.

Top Joliet District 204 initiatives for 2017

ney José Behar, who stated in the results of the audit in August that the district showed no intentional or unintentional exclusion of minority applicants. While Behar said the district’s hiring process is “good and sound,” he made recommendations for improvement.

After two sessions of a strategic plan periodic update were held, an action planning team was formed to address the new strategy that came out of the periodic update.

The strategy reads: “We will, in partnership with families and community, develop and implement plans to deliver a culturally responsive educational experience and expand the diversity of our faculty and administration in order to close the achievement gap.”

The action plans for the new strategy including creating a K-8 mentoring and outreach program, forming a new committee, ensuring a culturally diverse hiring team, implementing a conflict of interest policy for hiring teams, establishing a professional learning communi-

ty for students of color and more.

One of the action plans states the district will implement processes to support underperforming students with “particular attention paid to African-American males.”

“We somehow have to get together with our [feeder schools] and really connect with our African-American males from kindergarten and perhaps that can be with a K-8 mentoring program where we have our students mentoring the K-8 students,” McCarthy said.

Another action plan pertains to the district implementing a program for students of color that promotes teaching as a “vital and noble profession” that provides experience, supports and benefits to encourage students to become educators in the district.

McCarthy encouraged the audience at the Dec. 20 meeting to find someone they think could become a teacher.

“Talk to them about teachers that have made a difference in your life and how they might want to consider making the difference in hundreds and hundreds of lives over by becoming a teacher,” she said.

Ross said at the meeting that it was a pleasure working with the action planning team.

“If we don’t find a way to work with diverse populations in this country [and] in our local community, all our futures are less than what they should be,” he said.

Joliet congregation shares what’s special – and not – about Hanukkah

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Rabbi Charles Rubovits, why is Hanukkah spelled two ways?

“It’s interesting,” the Joliet rabbi answered. “In Hebrew, Hanukkah is only spelled one way. In English, there are 22 different spellings that I know of.”

Rubovits explained this and other mysteries of Hanukkah, or Chanukah if you prefer the other common spelling that attempts to represent the guttural pronunciation of the word in Hebrew.

He emphasized, however, that Hanukkah is really a simple holiday and not even a major one on the Jewish calendar. Somewhat to the dismay of Jewish religious leaders, it has become a bigger deal largely because it happens around the same time as Christmas.

“Between the roly-poly Santa Claus and Adam Sandler, Hanukkah has become a major holiday,” Rubovits said.

Adam Sandler is the comedian who wrote “The Chanukah Song,” which describes alienation that Jewish children can feel at Christmastime.

Now, Rubovits said, not only do many Jewish children get elaborate gifts for Hanukkah, they get them for eight days and become the envy of their Christian friends.

Hanukkah lasts for eight days, but the dates can vary from late November to late December because of the Jewish calendar, which is based on a lunar cycle and can add an entire month in some years.

This year, Hanukkah started Saturday.

Robin English, a member of the Joliet Jewish Congregation where Rubovits is rabbi, said she still gives her children the simple gifts that are the Hanukkah tradition.

But she’s addressed whatever alienation issue by throwing a Hanukkah party each year for her children’s friends.

Since there aren’t a lot of Jews in Shorewood, where English lives, or the Joliet area, most of her children’s friends aren’t Jewish. But they probably know more about Hanukkah than the average American.

“We talk about what Hanukkah means and why we celebrate,” English said. “We have the traditional foods – the potato pancakes and jelly doughnuts. We also do a candle lighting and play dreidel.”

Potato pancakes, jelly doughnuts, candle lighting, dreidel – what’s it all about?

Really, all the faithful are required to

do for Hanukkah, Rubovits said, is light a candle on the hanukkiah (the unique menorah used for Hanukkah) for each of the eight days of Hanukkah, and say prayers as they do it.

Here’s how that came about.

Back about 166 years before the first Christmas, Syrian-Greeks had taken over much of Israel, desecrated the Second Temple in Jerusalem, and were trying to force Jews to worship Greek gods.

A successful rebellion drove the Syrian-Greeks out of Jerusalem.

One of the first rebuilding tasks was to cleanse the temple, which includedlighting of the sacred menorah. Unfortunately, there was only enough oil to keep the menorah lit for one day. But by a miracle of God, the menorah stayed lit for eight days.

Thus, there are the eight days of Hanukkah and the unique hanukkiah, which has nine candles (one used for lighting) so that a candle can be lit each night of what also is called the “Festival of Lights.”

“From the first day to the last day, we’ll light the menorah,” said Sami Guzick of Joliet, also a member of the Joliet Jewish Congregation. “We gather together, and each of the children say a prayer as the candles are lit.”

Turtle’s Tap in Morris offers free Christmas dinner and more

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – In the Christmas gift room at Turtle’s Tap, there was paper unrolling, scissors cutting and helpers scurrying about picking out the perfect gift Sunday as diners were being seated in the dining room.

The helpers who donated their time on Christmas Day said the annual free meal has become part of their holiday season and something they look forward to.

“I like it, it makes me feel good when I leave,” Phyllis Cherroni said as she taped shut a package for a 13-year-old girl who was getting her dinner in the next room.

Her daughter, Sam Cherroni, brought Steven Wittkamp along this year to join in the frenzy of the wrapping table.

“He told his mom he decided to give this year instead of receive,” she said.

As quick as the wrappers could finish one gift, another gift was laid in front of them.

Helpers go from table to table getting the age and gender of those dining and then try to find them the perfect gift in the gift room.

Kevin “Turtle” Krople said they make sure they have something for everyone in the gift room, gifts for boys and girls of all ages are stacked high on tables, something for every age range.

On a shelf sat bags with gifts in them for the adults who decided to spend Christmas day being served by the volunteers.

“None of this would be possible without the volunteers,” Krople said.

“The food is made possible by chef Paul who spends days getting ready for this day and Performance Foods who helps out with the food.”

Paul Patterson said it takes about 40 hours just to get to Christmas Day, when he is joined by other volunteers who help put on the finishing touches and keep the buffet stocked as the line reaches 30, 40 or 50 people long.

“It gives me something to do on Christmas,” Patterson replied when asked why he does it.

He said the extra help on Christmas is what is needed to finish the weeklong preparations, he humbly gives them more credit then he does himself.

and 10 whole turkey breasts to feed the diners, who often come more for the people than the food.

“This is wonderful,” Pat Anderson said. “Without it, we would be home alone on Christmas, but we can come

here and eat good food and see people.”

told them they couldn’t open their gifts until after they finished their plates of turkey, mashed potatoes and all the fixings.

Williams said that along with the pajamas, she got brand new boots from Santa and a stuffed elephant from her mom that smells like lavender when it’s warmed up. She wore the boots with her pajamas and the elephant sat next to her as she ate.

Krople said he enjoys the event each year and is always amazed at how many volunteers show up to spend their day serving others.

The staff is all given the day off and everything from wait staff to dishwashers are people who show up asking to help.

The two foods most associated with Hanukkah are latkes, or potato pancakes, and sufganiyot, which are rich, jelly doughnuts.

What they have in common is that they both are cooked in oil, which is associated with the miracle at the Second Temple.

“You just fry and fry and fry,” said Guzick, describing family gatherings where lots of latkes get made.

So much oil gets in the air that her sister covers the kitchen cabinets with cardboard to keep them from getting coated in grease.

Cooking such foods is a tradition, Rubovits said. Fried chicken and french fries might be suitable Hanukkah food, too, but they’re not tradition.

The dreidel is a tradition.

Tradition and perseverance

The dreidel is basically a top, which

can be designed in many interesting shapes and forms. But it always is divided into four segments with four letters, which become the basis for placing bets.

Rubovits speculated that someone since 166 B.C. came up with the dreidel to keep children amused during Hanukkah, and the idea caught on until it became a tradition.

It’s a child’s game, and children typically win small prizes.

At English’s Hanukkah parties, the kids win candy or pennies.

“They do like it, and they have a good time,” she said.

Aside from the dreidel, latkes and the encroachment of commercialism, English said there is something basic and meaningful about Hanukkah.

“Hanukkah is a celebration of the rededication of the temple in Israel,” she said. “I think of it as a rededication of what being Jewish means to you.”

Said Rubovits, “In Judaism, it’s a big thing because it stands for perseverance – in this case, religious perseverance.”

LISLE – Morton Arboretum tries to shine a light on trees all year round.

That mission takes on a new meaning during its “Illumination: Tree Lights” at the Morton Arboretum display, now in its fourth year. From now until Jan. 2, visitors can see 50 acres of the arboretum’s trees bathed in a variety of colors.

“This is what we do at the Morton Arboretum,” said Anamari Dorgan, director of education. “We are all about trees and connecting people with them.

But during the wintertime, the trees lose their leaves after a beautiful glorious fall, and people go into dormancy like the trees and you’re not paying attention to that thing that’s still alive.

So we wanted to shine a light on that and really introduce visitors to trees in a very different way, figuratively and literally.”

The popular display has attracted more than 350,000 visitors over the years, including those from out of state.

“Some folks recently drove all the way from north of Madison, so it was like a four-hour round trip, but it was worth it for them,” Dorgan said.

“I don’t know how they are hearing about it in Wisconsin, but that was great. ... I love the fact we’re welcoming so many visitors during a colder time of the year.”

This year’s display will feature two new experiences. As part of the “Treemagination” experience, projections of abstract designs will splash across the arboretum’s hemlock trees.

“It is this amazing projection of light and visuals onto a screen of

hemlock trees,” Dorgan said. “It goes for six minutes, and it holds people completely enthralled and stopped in their tracks. One of the most astounding visual effects is when the trees appear to be breathing. It underscores that they are indeed alive and providing breath for us.”

Another new feature is the display’s grand finale, “Fantasy Forest.”

“We have 150 upright posts that have been installed in the open space between our hedgerows,” Dorgan said.

“And the white lights reflect off them in this brilliant manner. And it’s all synchronized to an original score. It’s really beautiful.”

As part of the display, visitors also will have the chance to “hug” a tree.

William W. North “Bill” age 78, of Plainfield, passed away peacefully Sunday, November 27, 2016 at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Joliet on March 23, 1938 and was a lifelong area resident. The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to the staff at Heritage Woods of Plainfield and Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center for their compassionate care.

Bill was a graduate of Lockport Township High School, the College of the Pacific in Stockton, CA and he completed one year at the University of Illinois College of Law. Bill also served in the United States Army Reserves.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Warren and Virginia (Ray) North and a brother, James “Jim” North.

Survived by his three loving daughters, Kimberly (Paul) Kalafut of Shorewood, Lisa (Doug) Graber of Castle Rock, CO and Sarah (Jeff) Waddell of Lockport; seven grandchildren, Kara, Chase and Logan Kalafut, Hanna and Max Graber, Ryan and Justin Waddell; a brother, Philip (the late Sandi) North; a sister, Marion (the late Phillip) Fleetwood; his former wife, JoAnn North and sister-in-law,

Carole North. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Bill was known for his sense of humor, his quick wit, his vast knowledge of trivia and his storytelling abilities. He enjoyed vacations in the North Woods of Wisconsin in his youth. Bill was an avid reader, a prolific writer and a collector of all things pertaining to the Old West. He had the uncanny ability to meet and become friends with people, especially the “well-known,” and he loved to share these stories.

Bill worked in advertising and broadcasting, and later publishing. He possessed a creative mind and an entrepreneurial spirit, and invented numerous card games and board games. He enjoyed coaching his daughters in Junior Miss Softball, and later watching his grandchildren play a variety of sports. Bill truly loved and was so very proud of his grandchildren!

A Celebration of Bill’s Life will take place on Thursday, December 29, 2016 at Holy Family Church in Shorewood, IL beginning with a visitation at 9:00 am until the funeral service at 10:00 am. Per Bill’s wishes, cremation rites have been accorded.

Mary L. Gorski nee Foster, age 91, of Lemont, passed away December 20, 2016, at her residence.

Born April 19, 1925, in Joliet, IL. She attended St. Mary’s Grade School and Providence High School. She was the secretary and owner of Theo J. Gorski Bus Company, established in 1915. Member of the Ladies Auxiliary V.F.W. Post 5819 and Lambda Nu Sorority.

She was very active in her children’s school parent organizations and many other outside activities.

Dems weigh 2018 challenge for governor

CHICAGO – Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner sent two clear signals when he dumped $50 million into his campaign fund: The 2018 race for Illinois governor will be a rough one, and the contest starts now.

What’s still unknown is which Democrats will try to unseat the multimillionaire former businessman.

Among those contemplating a bid are U.S. Rep. Cheri Bustos, businessman Chris Kennedy, state Sen. Andy Manar and billionaire investor J.B. Pritzker, according to potential candidates and aides.

In a glimpse of what’s to come, the Democratic Governors Association said Rauner is “more focused on getting elected than passing a budget or growing Illinois’ economy,” and that his cash infusion “won’t make Illinois voters forget about his past 2 years of failure.”

Illinois Republican Party spokesman Steven Yaffe fired back that the election will “present a clear choice between those like Gov. Rauner who want to reform state government so it works for the taxpayers and those who will simply raise taxes without reforming the status quo in order to protect the political insiders and special interests.”

Police: Majority of holiday violence is gang-related

CHICAGO – Chicago police said more than 40 people were shot over the holiday weekend and more than three dozen guns were seized.

The shooting tally includes violence at a family Christmas party on the city’s South Side at which two people were killed and several others wounded.

Autopsy scheduled for man found dead in Christmas fire

BRIGHTON – An autopsy has been scheduled for an 83-year-old man found dead Christmas morning after a fire broke out in his southwestern Illinois garage.

The Macoupin County Coroner’s Office identified the man as Thomas J. Vernatti of Brighton. The (Springfield) State Journal-Register reported that an autopsy was scheduled for Monday.

Authorities said Vernatti lived alone at the address.

Fire officials and police were called around 2 a.m. Sunday. The Illinois Fire Marshal’s Office was contacted to inves-

tigate the fire.

Brighton is about 75 miles from Springfield.

Rocker-turned-organ repairman fixing old organ

QUINCY – A one-time music store employee and rock musician is the unlikely point man in the renovation of 123-year-old church organ in western Illinois.

The (Quincy) Herald-Whig reported that Phil Hoenig is restoring the Unitarian Church’s Steere pipe organ. It’s Quincy’s oldest continually operating organ, though it’s been without key parts that mimic clarinet sounds since the 1970s.

Hoenig taught himself how to repair old organs. The first he worked on had 1,444 pipes. The Unitarian’s has 900.

Mayor’s race in Illinois’ 2nd-largest city takes shape

AURORA – The 2017 race for mayor in Illinois’ second-largest city is taking shape.

Five candidates submitted petitions last month, but one has dropped out.

The remaining candidates are state Rep. Linda Chapa LaVia, Alderman Richard Irvin, Alderman Michael Saville and Richard Guzman, the city’s assistant chief of staff.

The general election is April 4.

Elections rules say there’s no need for a Feb. 28 primary if there are only four candidates.

Former Aurora Mayor Tom Weisner stepped down from his post in October after more than a decade. He cited health concerns with his battle with cancer. The City Council chose Alderman Robert J. O’Connor to finish the remainder of the term, which ends in spring 2017.

Kremlin downplays terror attack possibility in jet crash

SOCHI, Russia – The Kremlin on Monday played down the possibility that a terror attack might have downed a Syria-bound Russian plane, killing all 92 people on board, as the nation observed a day of mourning for the victims, including most members of a world famous military choir.

The Tu-154 owned by the Russian Defense Ministry crashed into the Black Sea early Sunday two minutes after taking off in good weather from the city of Sochi.

The plane was carrying members of the Alexandrov Ensemble, often referred to as the Red Army Choir, to a New Year’s concert at a Russian military base in Syria.

About 3,500 people, 43 ships and 182 divers have been sweeping a vast crash site for bodies of the victims and debris, and dozens of drones and several submersibles also have been involved in the search.

Rescue teams so far have recovered 11 bodies and numerous body fragments, which have been flown to Moscow for identification.

Divers have located parts of the plane’s fuselage and other fragments, but the search for the jet’s flight recorders will likely prove challenging as they lack underwater locator beacons for easy spotting common in more modern planes.

Officials sought to squelch speculation that the crash might have been caused by a bomb planted on board or a portable air defense

missile.

But some aviation experts pointed that the crew’s failure to communicate any technical problem and a large area over which fragments of the plane were scattered point at a possible explosion on board.

Evidence of a bombing of a Syria-bound military flight would badly embarrass the Kremlin, highlighting Russia’s extreme vulnerability to attacks even as it boasts its success in Syria after Aleppo fell into President Bashar Assad’s hands.

President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, told reporters that an attack isn’t a likely scenario. Transport Minister Maxim Sokolov, who oversaw the rescue efforts, said investigators were looking into a possible technical fault or pilot error as the most likely reasons behind the crash.

But some experts remained skeptical, noting that the crew would have reported any technical glitch.

“Possible malfunctions ... certainly wouldn’t have prevented the crew from reporting them,” Vitaly Andreyev, a former senior Russian air traffic controller, told RIA Novosti, adding that an “external impact” was the most likely reason.

Russia’s main domestic security and counter-terrorism agency, the FSB, said it has found “no indications or facts pointing at the possibility of a terror attack or an act of sabotage on board the plane.”

The plane departed from the Chkalovsky military airport just outside Moscow and stopped in Sochi for refueling early Sunday.

Trump’s pick for ambassador to Israel sparks hot debate

NEW YORK – If President-elect Donald Trump wanted to show he planned to obliterate President Barack Obama’s approach to Israel, he might have found his man to deliver that message in David Friedman, his pick for U.S. ambassador.

The bankruptcy lawyer and son of an Orthodox rabbi is everything Obama is not: a fervent supporter of Israeli settlements, opponent of David Palestinian statehood Friedman and unrelenting defender of Israel’s government. So far to the right is Friedman that many Israel supporters worry he could push Israel’s hawkish Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to be more extreme, scuttling prospects for peace with Palestinians in the process.

The heated debate over Friedman’s selection is playing out just as fresh tensions erupt between the U.S. and Israel.

In a stunning decision Friday, the Obama administration moved to allow the U.N. Security Council to pass a resolution condemning Israeli settlements as illegal. The move to abstain, rather than veto, defied years of U.S. tradition of shielding Israel from such resolutions, and elicited condemnation from Israel, lawmakers of both parties, and especially Trump.

“Things will be different after Jan. 20th,” when he’s sworn in, Trump vowed Friday on Twitter. On Monday, he added: “The United Nations has

such great potential but right now it is just a club for people to get together, talk and have a good time. So sad!”

Presidents of both parties have long called for a two-state solution that envisions eventual Palestinian statehood, and Netanyahu says he agrees. Friedman, who still must be confirmed by the Senate, does not. He’s called the two-state solution a mere “narrative” that must end.

Under Obama, the U.S. has worked closely with J Street, an Israel advocacy group sharply critical of Netanyahu. Friedman accuses Obama of “blatant anti-Semitism” and calls J Street “worse than kapos,” a reference to Jews who helped the Nazis imprison fellow Jews during the Holocaust.

For decades, the U.S. has opposed Israeli settlement-building in lands it seized in the 1967 Mideast war. Friedman runs a nonprofit that raises millions of dollars for Beit El, a settlement of religious nationalists near Ramallah. Beit El runs a right-wing news outlet and a yeshiva whose dean has provocatively urged Israeli soldiers to refuse orders to uproot settlers from their homes.

So it’s unsurprising that Friedman’s nomination has already sharpened a growing balkanization of American Jews, between those who want the U.S. to push Israel toward peace and those who believe Obama’s approach abandoned America’s closest Mideast ally.

It’s a debate playing out even at Temple Hillel, near the Long Island-Queens border, where Friedman’s father was rabbi for almost half a century.

Thirty-two years before Trump’s election, President Ronald Reagan donned a yarmulke and noshed on chicken cutlets and noodle pudding at Rabbi Morris Friedman’s home, after a speech at Temple Hillel affirming the separation between church and state.

Coming just two weeks before Reagan’s re-election, the attempt to woo Jewish voters struck some as opportunistic, and they protested on the streets of the heavily Jewish town of North Woodmere.

Seated at the Sabbath table with Reagan was David Melech Friedman – his middle name means “king” in Hebrew. The rabbi’s son went on to become Trump’s bankruptcy lawyer, an advocate for far-right policies on Israel, and now, Trump’s choice for ambassador, despite having no diplomatic experience.

Cindy Grosz, who said she’s known Friedman for nearly 50 years, recalled big parties with boisterous debates about Jewish issues held in his fami-

ly’s sukkah, the outdoor hut Jews build during the harvest festival Sukkot.

“He still has the same best friends he’s had for over 30 years,” Grosz said.

At his midtown Manhattan law firm, Friedman opens his offices to those in mourning who need a minyan – a quorum of 10 men in Orthodox Judaism – to say the Mourner’s Kaddish, a prayer that observant Jews say daily for one year after a parent’s death.

And it was a parent’s death, in a way, that brought Friedman and Trump closer together. Over the years, Friedman has told friends the story of how the billionaire real estate mogul defied an oppressive snowstorm that had kept others away to “sit shiva” for Friedman’s father during the Jewish mourning period.

Educated at Columbia University and NYU School of Law, Friedman developed a reputation as an aggressive, high-stakes bankruptcy attorney, representing Trump when his Atlantic City casinos went through bankruptcy.

In the courtroom, he’s known as a formidable opponent, said attorney Tariq Mundiya, Friedman’s adversary in several cases. He said he’d been aware of Friedman’s advocacy on Israel but added, “When you’re in the fog of war with David, the last thing you’re talking about is the Middle East.”

Enraged by Trump’s pick, left-leaning groups and Palestinian officials have suggested his confirmation could spell the end of any serious discussions about peace.

Netanyahu has stayed publicly quiet about Trump’s pick. Friedman and Trump’s transition team didn’t respond to requests for comment.

Obama vs Trump: Dispute erupts over who would have won

HONOLULU – In an alternate universe in which President Barack Obama ran for a third term against Donald Trump, who would have won?

No surprise: The president and the president-elect disagree.

A fresh dispute erupted Monday between Obama and his successor, spurred by Obama’s hypothetical musings that had he run again, he would have been victorious. Interviewed for a podcast, Obama suggested he still holds enough sway over the coalition of voters that elected him twice to get them to vote for him once again.

“I am confident in this vision because I’m confident that if I had run again and articulated it, I think I could’ve mobilized a majority of the American people to rally behind it,” Obama told his for-

mer White House adviser, David Axelrod, in a podcast released Monday.

Trump, naturally, disagreed. He took to his preferred medium – Twitter – to offer his reaction.

“President Obama said that he thinks he would have won against me.

He should say that but I say NO WAY!” Trump wrote.

He suggested Obama’s record would have prevented him from securing a victory, citing jobs that have left the U.S., troubles with Obama’s Affordable Care Act and the ongoing threat posed by the Islamic State group as examples.

The White House declined to comment on Trump’s tweet.

In the podcast, Obama didn’t address whether he would have been able to surmount the obstacle that the Electoral College posed for Hillary Clinton. The Democrat failed to secure a majority of electoral votes despite winning the pop-

ular vote by millions.

Yet Obama said he’s spoken to people across the U.S. who have told him the direction he pursued “is the right one,” a sentiment he said extends even to some people “who disagreed with me.” He suggested Democrats’ failure in the election may have stemmed from the prevailing assumption that Clinton’s victory was all but assured.

“If you think you’re winning, then you have a tendency – just like in sports – maybe to play it safer,” Obama said.

Though Obama railed against Trump during the campaign, he’s largely held his tongue since the Republican’s Election Day victory, in large part to ensure a smooth transition of power.

He and Trump have spoken regularly by phone, and Trump has praised his predecessor for the graciousness with which he’s handled the process.

But in recent days, points of tension

between their two teams have started to emerge, driven by Trump’s picks of Cabinet nominees who have vowed to dismantle much of what Obama has accomplished. The Obama administration has also been dismayed by requests from Trump’s team for information they fear could be used to try to identify and then eliminate bureaucrats who have worked on Obama priorities such as climate change and women’s rights overseas.

Obama, who is vacationing in Hawaii, was prohibited by the Constitution’s 22nd Amendment from running for a third term. But Obama has said that even if there weren’t term limits for presidents, he believes it’s important for the country to have a change of leadership after eight years. He’s also suggested his wife, first lady Michelle Obama, would have had little patience for a third term in the White House.

By 2021, analysts expect revenues to grow by 30 percent, to $18.5 billion, with earnings improving by 50 percent, to $7.35 a share, and an increase in the $3.50 dividend to $4.45. DEO’s

financial position is A-plus, and Wall Street believes that DEO could trade at $145 by 2021. Keep this stock.

Dollar Tree (DLTR-$85) is a discount variety store selling thousands of items at a buck apiece. The success of the dollar store concept is a threat to big grocers and convenience stores.

In the past five years, the compound annual growth rate of the dollar store industry’s revenues has increased by 8.5 percent, with consumables accounting for 67.4 percent of aggregate sales.

DLTR has done even better than that, with revenues in the past 10 years growing fivefold. Combined profits from DLTR’s 14,400 locations have also grown fivefold, thanks to net profit margins of 5.1 percent – the highest in the industry.

And unlike those of other stores in the retail industry, DLTR’s revenues and earnings are nearly impervious to recession, inflation and the economic cycle. Most DLTR customers are lower- or middle-class consumers who shop at discount stores to save money, especially on personal care items and food products.

DLTR stores have frozen food sections (with hamburgers, fish tacos,

etc., also at a buck each) and sell condiments, varieties of canned fruits and vegetables, cereals, tuna, bread and similar consumables.

DLTR also sells toothpaste, hair spray, soap, deodorant and the like.

The U.S. food stamp program, serving more than 40 million people, costs taxpayers about $75 billion a year.

It’s estimated that the program could save $30 billion a year if Congress required food stamp users to shop at DLTR, where a family of four can be well-fed for less than $38 a week.

This is a jim-dandy stock for conservative long-term investors. The Street believes that DLTR could see revenues reach $30 billion by 2021 and post earnings of $7.40 a share, nearly double this year’s earnings. Some analysts think DLTR could trade above the $165 mark, and it probably will split after the price exceeds $100.

Keep this stock.

Czerkies’ gift will support the medical center’s emergency department renovation, which includes expansion and modernization of the patient registration and waiting areas. The renovation also introduced a newly designed patient care area that will be used for triage and the treatment of minor injuries and illness.

The hospital averages more than 60,000 visits a year and, since the beginning of 2016, has averaged more than 175 patients a day with approximately 50 arriving by ambulance.

dgoss@shawmedia.com AURORA – The Joliet Catholic Academy boys basketball team suffered through a poor third quarter Monday afternoon.

Yet, the opening day of the East Aurora Holiday Tournament produced nothing but positives for the Hilltoppers.

Donavan Finch scored 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and Jack Surin chipped in 15 points and three steals as JCA knocked off Neuqua Valley, 59-48.

The Hilltoppers will face another tough opponent in Oswego East at 4 p.m.

Tuesday in the second round of pool play in the eight-team tournament.

JCA (4-6) was at its best in the first half as the Hilltoppers shot 68.8 percent on 11 of 16 in building a 35-16 lead.

The third quarter, however, was different. Neuqua (5-5) forced six turnovers, allowed JCA only three shots and converted on most of its possessions in outscoring the Hilltoppers, 19-2.

“Every team is going to go on a run,” Surin said. “We have to do a good job withstanding it.”

Noah Herdman’s long two-point basket with 20 seconds left in the quarter tied the game for Neuqua at 35-35.

However, Aidan Tyrell made two free throws with :06 on the clock for a 37-35 JCA lead after three quarters, and the Hilltoppers never relinquished the lead.

“I don’t think we could have played a better first half,” JCA coach Joe Gura said. “They had their big run to get back in it, but what I really liked was the way we never let them take the lead and the way we closed out the game at the end.”

The Griffins continued to dominate inside during the final half and fin-

ished with a 37-17 rebounding advantage, which helped them take a 58-27 lead into the final quarter. East also got eight points from Riley Gaynor, six points and eight rebounds from Anna Power, five points and seven boards from Bailey Kramer and six rebounds from Shannon Cooley.

“We were focused more on teamwork and working hard over the break,” Hunter said. “With the years that I’ve played high school basketball, things usually get better around Christmastime since teams start working harder. I think the time off was good to have. We needed that week off to just regroup and practice a lot.

“If we keep playing the way that we know how to play and the way that we should be playing, I think that we could surprise some people. I don’t think it’s how a team starts a season, it’s about chemistry, working through adversity and teamwork.”

Griffins coach Jim Martin was understandably a bit concerned about how well the mixture of successful programs from East and North would work out and the initial 10 games didn’t really shed any new light on the situation. But after Monday’s decisive win over the Celtics, he’s feeling much more upbeat about things.

“The break was good for us since

we were able to clear our heads,” Martin said. “We talked about them feeling more comfortable with me as their coach. Coach (Don) Shaughnessy took them a couple of days in practice when I had school and was sick one day and he got them loose for us and they were having a little more fun and it really helped.

“I told them that if I’d held them back, I didn’t mean to, so they had the green light and let’s go. The nice thing about this is that we’d given up 70 points in some games and were able to hold a team that can shoot like they do to 39 points. But we’re better on that end and that was the key. And we got out and had some good looks and it’s easier to play with the lead.”

The Celtics, who play Oak Forest at 3:30 p.m. today, received 12 points from Abby Ragusa, 11 points from Ryann O’Garek and seven points from Claire Paciga.

“We got blitzed on the boards and didn’t transition ‘D’ well or stop the ball,” Providence coach Eileen Copenhaver said. “There were numerous things that we didn’t do on defense to stay in a close game. I thought the kids were trying to get some things done and it was nice to see a couple of kids hitting some shots, but there are two sides of basketball.”

win for the Indians. Keegan Graebner (14 points, three steals, two assists) sank six consecutive late free throws to secure a 49-39 victory.

“We practice shooting free throws every day in practice,“ Keegan Graebner said. “I told my teammates to get me the ball and I had confidence that I would make them. We ran our offense very well and by doing so, we were able to get a number of open looks at the basket.”

In the first quarter, Butlers’ emphatic dunk and 3-point bomb made it 12-0 Indians. A Kyle Graebner steal and old-fashioned three-point play made it 15-0.

Kyle Graebner’s third steal of the quarter led to a layup from Brandon Hill for a 17-0 lead. After Kyle Graebner’s fourth count of larceny and layup, it was 19-0 Minooka with 2:02 left in the first quarter.

“We came out on fire defensively, in the first quarter,” Kyle Graebner

said. “We put a lot of pressure on Nazareth and shut down their passing lanes, which led to the six first-quarter steals.”

Nazareth (2-6) got on the scoreboard on a bucket from Jack Santi to close the first quarter, with Minooka (8-2) up 19-2.

Butler scored all seven of Minooka’s second-quarter points as the Indians took a 26-10 halftime lead. In the third quarter, Keegan Graebner scored five points and picked up a pair of steals and had two beautiful assists on Butler layups before the Indians’ scoring drought.

“We were very efficient offensively in the first half,“ Butler said. “My teammates were able to get me the ball in the post in great position to score.

Defensively we played very well and even as Nazareth made the game close, we were confident we would come out victorious.”

Nazareth was led by junior Mike

Adams, who scored 12 points and had 10 rebounds.

Minooka forced 21 turnovers, 16 on steals. Butler picked up a pair of steals along with five rebounds. Zach Schultz added three steals, Hill had two and Antonio Milazzo and Adrian Page each had one.

“We pride ourselves on our defense,” Minooka coach Scott Tanaka said. “We really attacked Nazareth, especially in the first quarter. Keegan Graebner nailed down the victory with his six clutch free throws. Kyle’s (Graebner’s) four steals in the first quarter got us going. Johnny Butler had another Jonny Butler-type game.”

Shooting 57 percent, Wheaton North (6-2) crushed Rolling Meadows, 84-53, Monday and will meet Minooka at 3 p.m. Tuesday in a second-round game.

“Wheaton North is a very good team and it should be a great game,” Tanaka said.

FRANKFORT – Lincoln-Way East’s girls basketball team had been struggling so nobody particularly minded having a nearly two-week layoff to work on things before beginning play in their own Medieval Classic.

Based on their showing against Providence Catholic on Monday, the time off proved to be beneficial for the Griffins, who took an early lead and went on to claim a 69-39 victory.

East (5-6) used a 13-0 run in the opening quarter to turn an 8-5 deficit into an 18-8 lead over the Celtics (8-5), who were unable to get closer than eight points after that.

Lauren Hunter (six rebounds) tossed in 16 of her game-high 22 points in the opening half, while Carolyn Waleski added 11 of her 20 points during the first 16 minutes to help build a, 43-19, halftime lead for the Griffins, who meet Andrew at 2 p.m. today.

“We had a long break after playing H-F (Homewood-Flossmoor), which was really a rough game,” Waleski said. “So we had a lot of practice and just got down to the little things that we weren’t doing. It was always the little things that we needed to get fixed,

Mirotic, Wade lead Bulls over Pacers

The Associated Press CHICAGO – Dwyane Wade scored 21 points, Nikola Mirotic added a season-high 20 and the Bulls survived a poor shooting performance for a 9085 victory over the Indiana Pacers on Monday night to snap a three-game losing streak.

Jimmy Butler had 16 points despite making only 3 of 12 field-goal attempts.

The Bulls, which had dropped nine of 12, were 32-for-83 (38.6 percent) from the field for the game.

Aaron Brooks had a season-high 19 points to lead the Pacers, who have lost three straight.

Indiana, which dropped to 4-12 on the road, has lost five straight and eight of nine at the United Center.

Michael Carter-Williams returned to the Bulls lineup after missing nearly two months with left knee and left wrist injuries. He finished with one point (0-for-5 from the field) in 18 minutes.

Mirotic pumped in 14 points in 12 first-half minutes to pace the Bulls to a 51-41 halftime lead. He made three 3-pointers to provide the kind of spark the Bulls had been looking for from him on a consistent basis.

Just 30 seconds into the final quarter the Pacers pulled even at 64 on a 3-pointer by Brooks. The Bulls, though, answered with 10 straight points for a 74-64 edge.

Midway through the quarter Indiana ran off eight straight points to trim the deficit to 76-74 and pulled within 86-85 in the final minute on a 3-pointer by Paul George.

But Mirotic hit a long two-pointer with 21.2 seconds left and Wade followed with a steal and basket to end it.

Bulls: F Doug McDermott didn’t play because of a left shin injury suffered Sunday at San Antonio. The third-year forward missed 10 games earlier in the season because of two concussions.

“It’s unfortunate,” coach Fred Hoiberg said. “You could tell Doug’s been getting more comfortable as we’ve been going on and he’s been shooting the ball with more confident.”

LAKE FOREST – For the third year in a row, the Bears enter Week 17 with nothing to play for, as they conclude a sixth consecutive season without a postseason berth.

John Fox said the message hasn’t changed and that the players know that there is pride and the future to think about Sunday in Minnesota.

“Again, we’re evaluating and I think our guys understand that. I think at this stage, there are a lot of people who have nothing left to play for,” Fox said Monday. “… As I even mentioned Saturday, our guys are still competing. They’re working hard.

They’re practicing hard. There’s no splintering.”

Veteran Jerrell Freeman has never been on a losing team in his four NFL seasons, making the playoffs in his first three with the Colts. He explained how as football players, they need to be “programmed” to focus on the task ahead.

“You still have to be a profession-

al,” he said. “Got to go about it week after week going through it the same way. Our next opponent is a good team. Got to be able to move on. As a professional, every snap, every play, every series, quarter or game, we’re programmed to move forward.”

Most members of the defense are rookies or second-year players, and Freeman said it’s important for them to know about the ongoing evaluations.

“Just help them understand, everybody has a job to do,” he said. “I said before, if you’re not going to do it, they’ll bring somebody else in that will. You’ve got to have that attitude and go out there and go to work and make sure you’re doing everything you need to do to prepare and try to put your best foot forward when you go out on the field.”

Historically low takeaways: The defense has created 10 turnovers this season, set to shatter last year’s record for a franchise-low of 17. Matt Barkley’s five interceptions brought the overall ratio to minus-16, tied for 30th in the NFL.

“It’s not a good formula when you’re minus-16, so that’s two-sided,” Fox said. “I think our interception total’s up where we’ve thrown 17 interceptions, five this past game, so both sides of that are why we’re sitting here at 3-12.”

Meredith’s ascension: In addition to the strong play from rookies Jordan Howard and Cody Whitehair, second-year wideout Cameron Meredith has taken advantage of his opportunity as a starting receiver, leading the team in catches (62) and receiving yards (827).

The former college quarterback said route running is something that he’s improved the most.

“When I first started playing receiver, [route running] was one of the main things I really constantly focused on. It’s different once you get into the league,” he said. “Guys are faster, stuff like that. Getting in and out of my breaks, stuff like that, being physical at the point of attack, those are all things I’m still working on, but I’m definitely getting better at it.”

The Indians went on to score the most points in program history in their 93-19 victory over Reavis in the Medieval Classic game at Lincoln-Way East.

Brooklyn Bachmann led the offense with 15 points and five of her teammates also scored double digits.

Maice Alexa tallied 13 points, while Jenna Roberts had 12 and the

Finch scored 10 points in the final 1:30 of the first half, including five in the last six seconds as the Hilltoppers stretched their lead to 19 points at the break.

“Donavan is going to make some Division III coach very happy,” Gura said of Finch, a 6-6 senior forward. “He will have no idea what he has in him.”

Surin had an outstanding night, save for a few mishaps in the third quarter. He hit 4 of 5 shots, 6 of 7 free throws and scored six points in the fourth quarter.

“My teammates did a good job picking me up in the third quarter,” Surin said. “We got good contributions from our bench.”

Tyrell, the point guard, finished with eight points and three assists. Senior guard Dexter Spencer, in his first season at JCA after transferring from Chicago Hope, came off the bench and chipped in nine points, including six in the fourth quarter. Pete Ragen contributed seven points.

“We’ve been waiting for Dexter to break through,” Gura said. “Maybe getting him going a little tonight will help.”

“We got a huge game from Dex,” Surin said.

Oswego East, which beat Chicago Christian, 64-52, Monday, will be a formidable opponent Tuesday, but the Hilltoppers are getting the feeling they can compete.

ST. PETERSBURG, Florida – Mississippi State’s sideline erupted in celebration, relieved to escape with a victory to end a challenging season.

Nick Fitzgerald rushed for 142 yards and two touchdowns in another strong performance by the dual-threat quarterback; however, the heavily favored Bulldogs had to block a field goal in the closing seconds to hold off Miami (Ohio), 17-16, in the St. Petersburg Bowl on Monday.

Instead, both the Bulldogs (6-7) and the RedHawks (6-7), who won six straight games to become bowl eligible, finished with losing marks.

Fitzgerald, who led the Southeastern Conference in total offense, scored on runs of 2 and 44 yards on the way to his eighth 100-yard rushing performance of the season. The redshirt sophomore also completed 13 of 26 passes for 126 yards.

Gus Ragland threw for 257 yards and two touchdowns for Miami. He also threw his first interception of the season early in the fourth quarter, and Mississippi State turned the mistake into a 36-yard field goal that put the Bulldogs ahead with 12:03 remaining.

The RedHawks drove the ball deep into Bulldogs territory on their next two possessions, turning the ball over on downs at the Mississippi State 32 midway through the fourth quarter and reaching the 17 before Dowd had his kick blocked with 5 seconds left.

Boston College builds lead, holds off Maryland for 36-30 win

DETROIT – Patrick Towles threw two touchdown passes and caught a pass for a score in the first half, helping Boston College build a big lead in a 36-30 win over Maryland in the Quick Lane Bowl on Monday.

The Eagles (7-6) led by 16 at halftime, 23 points early in the third quarter and had to force Maryland to turn the ball over on downs late in the game to seal the victory.

The Terrapins (6-7) had the ball at their 35 with 1:48 left, but didn’t gain a yard before Harold Landry helped to finish them off with a possession-ending sack.

Boston College was ahead 29-13 at halftime after Towles threw a 49-yard TD pass to Michael Walker. On a reverse and pass from receiver Jeff Smith, the quarterback scored on a 20-yard TD catch in the second quarter.

The Terrapins made some big plays on offense, but four turnovers, sacks and poor field position proved to be costly. In the first half, Perry Hills threw an interception, lost a fumble and was sacked four times. On the Terrapins’ first snap of the second half, Hills handed off to Ty Johnson and the running back’s fumble was recovered in the end zone by Boston College.

NC State beats Vanderbilt, 41-17, in Independence Bowl

SHREVEPORT, La. – Jaylen Samuels caught three touchdown passes from Ryan Finley, Nyheim Hines returned a kickoff for a 100-yard touchdown and North Carolina State beat Vanderbilt, 41-17, on Monday night in the Independence Bowl.

North Carolina State (7-6) won three of its final four games to finish with a winning record. The Wolfpack built a 28-3 lead by midway through the third quarter – largely thanks to Samuels’ touchdown catches of 9, 55 and 17 yards – and then held off a brief Vanderbilt rally.

Finley completed 19 of 30 passes for 235 yards. Samuels’ three touchdown catches were an Independence Bowl record.

Vanderbilt (6-7) had a lot of momentum going into the game thanks to surprising wins over Mississippi and Tennessee to end the regular season.

But the Commodores’ offense – which scored a combined 83 points against the Rebels and Volunteers – struggled for most of the night.

Vanderbilt’s Kyle Shurmur completed just 19 of 46 passes for 158 yards and three interceptions. Even so, the Commodores briefly made things interesting, closing to 28-17 early in the fourth quarter.

But that’s when Hines responded his big kickoff return to put the game out of reach.

WASHINGTON – When Michelle Obama considered the daunting prospect of becoming first lady, she avoided turning to books by her predecessors for guidance.

Instead, she turned inward.

“I didn’t want to be influenced by how they defined the role,” Mrs. Obama once said. She instinctively knew she had to define the job “very uniquely and specifically to me and who I was.”

That meant doing it her way: shaping the role around her family, specifically her two young daughters, and not letting her new responsibilities consume her.

Throughout her eight years, Mrs. Obama has been a powerful, if somewhat enigmatic, force in her husband’s White House. She chose her moments in the often unforgiving spotlight with great care and resisted pressure to become more engaged in the mudslinging of partisan politics.

At times, she’s been more traditional than some expected – or wanted from this first lady. At other times, she’s been eager to update stuffy conventions associated with the office.

As she navigated her way through, the woman who grew up on the South Side of Chicago discovered a talent for television and a comfort with Hollywood A-listers, haute couture and social media. And she used all of those elements to promote her causes – childhood obesity, support for military families, girls’ education – with at least some success.

When she leaves the White House next month just a few days after celebrating her 53rd birthday, Mrs. Obama will do so not just as a political figure, but as a luminary with international influence.

Friends say she charted that path largely on her own.

“What she did was she sort of listened to herself and allowed her own inner voice and strength and direction to lead her in the way that felt most authentic to her,” Oprah Winfrey told The Associated Press. “And I think watching somebody makes you want to do that for yourself.”

Mrs. Obama grappled with the childhood obesity issue before becoming first lady; a doctor had warned her about her daughters’ weight.

At the White House, she decided to share her experience with the country and started by planting the first vegetable garden there in more than 60 years. That led the following

The first lady appealed to elected officials, food makers, sellers, restaurant chains and others to try to make healthy food more accessible. She lobbied lawmakers to add more fruit, vegetables and whole grains, and limit fat, sugar and sodium in the federal school lunch program.

That led to the first update to the program in decades, and for Mrs. Obama the process was akin to a crash course in Washington sausage-making. Mrs. Obama’s effort was not universally welcomed. Republicans in Congress wanted to reverse the rules.

Others said Mrs. Obama was acting like the “food police.” Even the kids she wanted to help added to the backlash. Some students posted photos of lunches they found unappealing on Twitter with the hashtag #ThanksMichelleObama, or simply tossed the food into the trash.

Mrs. Obama had won. But she would never again try to work closely with Congress on an issue. She chose instead to use her platform to press industry to change its ways.

It’s too early to know how Mrs. Obama’s efforts may affect childhood obesity rates long term, but advocates believe she helped change the national dialogue around healthy eating. And although incoming Republi-

can President Donald Trump, a proud patron of McDonald’s and Kentucky Fried Chicken, has yet to comment on school meal regulations, advocates worry about the fate of Mrs. Obama’s effort under a White House and Congress that will be controlled by the GOP. Reflecting on her childhood obesity work, Mrs. Obama said some people initially wondered why she would bother with such a “softball issue” but “now, all those challenges and criticisms are off the table.” She told talk-show host Rachael Ray that “at least we’ve become very aware as a society that this is one of our most important health issues.”

Mrs. Obama’s push to put the country on a health kick extended to exercise – and she made herself exhibit A. To promote “Let’s Move,” the first lady often donned athletic wear and ran around with kids at sports clinics, some on the South Lawn. She twirled a hula hoop around her waist 142 times and kick-boxed in a video of the gym workout that helped tone the upper arms she showed off regularly, as in her official White House photo.

She did push-ups with Ellen DeGeneres, raced in a potato sack against late-night TV’s Jimmy Fallon in the East Room and shimmied with a turnip in a brief video popular on social media – all to show that exercise can

be fun.

“I’m pretty much willing to make a complete fool of myself to get our kids moving,” she once said.

Instead of going the fool’s route, Mrs. Obama turned herself into a fitness guru and a figure significantly more popular than her husband.

First lady was never a position Mrs. Obama imagined for herself, given her modest upbringing, her distaste for politics and having never seen her skin color on a U.S. president and first lady.

Her early aversion to politics developed while watching her father navigate Chicago politics for his job with the city water department, and was reinforced by her husband’s pursuit of a political career. Both Obamas have said his political ambition had strained their marriage and family.

Once in the White House, Mrs. Obama vowed to protect her then 10- and 7-year-old daughters’ right to a normal childhood. She declared being “mom in chief” to Malia and Sasha as her priority, irking women who hoped the first lady might be less constrained by stereotypes.

She showed few signs of trying to push those boundaries.

Mrs. Obama was an enthusiastic White House hostess. She rarely spoke about issues that were outside of her portfolio. She crafted her public schedule around her daughters’ activities and limited her travel so she could spend time with them.

The Obamas’ parenting style – often described by both Obamas as warm, but strict – made them role models on that front, a point of pride, particularly in the African-American community.

“We have heard no Obama children drama,” said Ingrid Saunders Jones, national chairwoman of the National Council of Negro Women.

Mrs. Obama didn’t really begin to open up about the historic nature of her service as the first black woman to become first lady until the end of the presidency was in sight. She mostly addressed the subject in interviews when she was asked to reflect about it, and discussed how important it was for children to see a black president and first lady.

Longtime friend and White House adviser Valerie Jarrett said Mrs. Obama was often reluctant to talk about such matters earlier because she wanted her legacy to be more than just her place in history.

“Her goal is not what she is, but what she does,” Jarrett said.

As a rheumatologist Said specializes in the Dr. Belal Said diagnosis, management and treatment of musculoskeletal and rheumatic diseases, including bursitis, gout/pseudogout, lupus and related diseases, osteoarthritis, psoriatic arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and vasculitis.

Said has a special interest in rheumatoid arthritis, vasculitis and inflammatory myositis.

Dr. Said attended medical school at Jordan University of Science and Technology in Irbid, Jordan. Silver Cross Hospital to offer a Prepared Childbirth class in Jan.

NEW LENOX – Silver Cross Hospital will offer a Prepared Childbirth class from 6 to 9 p.m. Jan. 16 and Jan. 17, and a one-day Prepared Childbirth class from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 21.

Classes will be held at Silver Cross Hospital, Pavilion A, Conference Center, 1890 Silver Cross Blvd., New Lenox.

Participants will receive instruction

from a registered nurse on breathing, relaxation and floor exercise techniques.

She also will review the labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum processes. A tour of the birthing unit is included.

The cost is $80 a couple. There is no charge for patients under the care of an OB/GYN with the Aunt Martha’s Joliet Community Health Center or the Will County Community Health Center.

USF nursing professor in Joliet gave intercollegiate talk

JOLIET – On Oct. 14, University of St. Francis nursing professor and director of the Doctor of Nursing Practice program, Deena Nardi, gave the presentation “Global Guidelines for Culturally Competent Nursing Practice.”

The presentation was hosted by the Saint Xavier University School of Nursing in conjunction with Sigma Theta Tau, Alpha Omicron chapter and the Chicago Bilingual Nurse Consortium.

The presentation addressed the need for guidelines in culturally competent health care and how to apply said guide-

lines. It will take a systems approach to advocating for resources to support a defined set of values and principles that serve all patients as equals by providers, administration and educators across all avenues of health care delivery.

The presentation was for nurses, advanced practice nurses, nurse educators, students and administrators who are interested in improving health care delivery and their own practice.

Nardi is a member of the combined American Academy of Nursing’s Global Health Expert Panel / Transcultural Nursing Society task force that developed global guidelines for culturally competent nursing education, administration, and practice. As a member of the task force, Nardi has been working on these guidelines for the last seven years and written several editorials, research studies and papers on them.

She also is an editorial board member for the Journal of Psychosocial Nursing and Mental Health Services and maintains board-certification in Illinois and California as a psychiatric mental health clinical nurse specialist and therapist.

Dear Doctors: Our young son fell off his skateboard recently, and the items my wife and I needed to tend to his cuts and scrapes were scattered throughout the house. Now we want to assemble a home first-aid kit.

What should it contain?

Dear Reader: Great idea! A well-stocked first-aid kit is an important safety feature for every home. And while first-aid kits are available to buy, you easily can put one together yourself.

Take an afternoon to evaluate your family needs, make a list, then hit your local drugstore. With just a little bit of planning, you’ll be ready to handle the minor bumps and mishaps of everyday life at a moment’s notice.

With a home first-aid kit, you’re preparing to deal with three basic types of medical issues – injury, infection and allergy.

Everyday injuries include scrapes, cuts, splinters, burns, sprains and stings. Infections might range from an inflamed wound to fever, a sore throat or the flu.

You’ll also want to be prepared for common allergic reactions such as the rash from poison oak and poison ivy, and itching and swelling from insect stings.

It’s important if anyone in your family has severe food allergies or a respiratory condition such as asthma, you stock a backup of the appropriate medication.

Mark each item with its expiration date and replace as needed. It’s a good idea to keep a separate checklist, which will make it easy to know when it’s time to replace that inhaler or EpiPen. So how do you build a first-aid kit?

Bridge winners know that some losers cannot wait; they must be eliminated immediately. In today’s deal, how can South avoid four losers in his four-heart contract after West leads the spade three? Also, what were West’s more-effective leads, and what do you think of the auction?

I agree strongly with South’s twoheart positive response. Here, over three hearts, North would have done best to sign off in three no-trump, but that could have been really silly because the club suit might have been wide open.

Given the trump break, West would have defeated the contract by leading the club ace (or her low heart, but that would not be recommended). Then East could have sat back and waited for three trump tricks to fall into her lap.

West led a spade in the optimistic hope that her partner could ruff in quickly. She chose the three as a suit-preference signal for clubs, the lower-ranking of the other two side suits.

Now, though, declarer led a second high spade at trick two and discarded one club loser. Then South played a third spade. East would have done best to ruff with her heart ace and shift to a club, but she ruffed low. South overruffed, crossed to the board with a diamond and led another spade: ruff, overruff. Now declarer played a trump and got home with an overtrick, his only losers being the rounded-suit aces.
