History of Postcards – Part 3 Deltiology, the term used for the collection and study of postcards, is thought by many to be one of the largest collectible hobbies in the world.

In order to best understand the inscriptions on the postcards, a brief background account of the United States’ formal postal rules and design of the card is necessary.

The following is Part 3 in the series.

The period after the Private Mailing Card Period of the postcard is known as the Post Card Period. In December 1901, the U.S. Post Office issued Post Office Order No. 1447, which allowed, for the first time, the words “Post Card” instead of the longer “Private Mailing Card,” printed on the undivided back of privately printed cards.

The period from 1901 to 1907, sometimes called the Post Card Period or the Undivided Era, saw the production and consumption of printed postcards rise. While writing still was only allowed on the front of the picture side of the card, new changes were on the horizon.

Part of the attraction to postcard collecting in this era can be traced to advancements in photographic equipment, such as Eastman Kodak’s “Folding Pocket Camera,” which allowed the public the ability to take photographs and print them onto postcard backs. A metal scribe attached to the camera allowed the photographer to write a caption or comment directly onto the negative.

Beginning in March 1907, postcards with a divided back were permitted. The left side of the back of the card was allowed for messages while the right side was for the address. Finally, the back of cards were used for both addresses and for messages, leaving the front untouched.

During the Divided Back Period (1907 to 1914), often called the Golden Age of postcards, the black space on the front of many postcards, which was previously

The threat of war in Europe and other domestic factors saw a decline in imported postcards from Germany, and the addiction to collecting the cards stalled. By the end of Divided Back Period, the telephone was beginning to replace postcard communication in many locations.

The reminder to the sender that “This Side For The Address” is located on the bottom left-hand corner. Postmarked in Chicago on Feb. 13, 1906, this postcard was mailed to Miss Mabel Lloyd of Chicago.

The bottom postcard dates from the Divided Back Period. Postmarked in Braceville on November 30th, this divided back era postcard was addressed to Miss Lillie Weinshanker of Chicago.

7 principles of Kwanzaa taught at community center since 1970s

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Monday marks the start of Kwanzaa, a weeklong celebration of African heritage that has long roots in Joliet.

The Warren-Sharpe Community Center earlier this month held a Kwanzaa festival for students in its after-school program.

The center has taught the lessons of Kwanzaa to students since at least 1971, when its current director, Kay Bolden, was an 11-year-old student at what was then the Warren YMCA. “I remember it very clearly,” said Bolden, who that year distinguished herself in Kwanzaa activities with the ability to pronounce the word “kujichagulia.”

“It means self-determination,” Bolden said. “I got promoted, and I was able to do the program with the older kids.”

Learning words such as kujichagulia (koo-jee-cha-goo-LEE-ah) and their origins is part of the meaning of Kwanzaa, which was started in 1966 with the intent of bringing African-Americans closer to their ethnic roots.

“It was a time when civil rights was very much in the forefront,” Bolden said. “My parents were very involved in the civil rights movement. Children were learning about African-American history.”

Kwanzaa also teaches principles of living, called the Seven Principles of Kwanzaa, using the Swahili words for unity, faith, responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith in addition to kujichagulia.

One of the symbols of Kwanzaa is a candelabra with seven candles representing each of the principles.

While it is celebrated every year at the Warren-Sharpe Community Center, there are not many public events in Joliet recognizing Kwanzaa.

“It is recognized a lot more in Chicago,” said Warren Dorris, a former Joliet city council member who is now pastor of the Prayer Tower Church of God in Christ in Joliet. “In Chicago, where there’s a huge sense of African-American history, it has been large. It has never been large here.”

Dorris said there are occasionally Kwanzaa events in Joliet. But he believes many African-American families will pay attention to Kwanzaa this

compete for attention with the two more prominent holidays.

But Herbert Brooks Jr., pastor of the

St. John Missionary Baptist Church in Joliet and a Will County Board member, said he does not see Kwanzaa as conflicting with Christmas.

“I’m a Baptist Christian minister. I participate in Kwanzaa,” Brooks said.

“I think most African-American pastors and churches do participate in some way. ... It’s a celebration of our heritage, and it’s all about family and unity.”

JOLIET – Carol Morrison couldn’t believe her ears – and then a second person told a similar story about her father, Richard “Dick” Berti of Joliet.

Apparently, Dick, former third generation owner of R. Berti & Son Contractors Inc., was fond of giving refunds to his clients, said Carol, of Crest Hill. Dick’s company built many homes in the Joliet area in the 1950s and 1960s, Carol said, but if he completed the work below the estimated cost, he returned the difference to the clients.

Former clients would finish their stories by adding, “Anybody else would not say something to make the extra profit, but not your dad,” Carol said. It was this type of integrity Dick modeled to his four children, she added.

“My dad was that kind of guy,” Carol said. “You had to be honest and treat everyone fairly.”

Interestingly, Dick told similar stories about his grandfather, also Richard Berti, said Richard “Rich” Berti of Shorewood, Dick’s son and current president of the contractor business.

Clients paid for their work with blank checks, instructing Richard to simply fill in the amount when he completed the job.

“They trusted him so much,” Rich said.

Dick was 80 when he died Aug. 28.

His grandfather, Richard Berti, began the business in the 1890s, although R. Berti & Son Contractors Inc. was not officially established until 1923, Carol said.

Contractors Inc. was home-based; it’s now located at 1604 Caton Farm Road, Lockport. Dick served on the Will County Planning Commission and was active with the Contractors Association of Will and Grundy Counties, Rich said.

Rich grew up on job sites doing general cleanup and carrying building material, often working alongside Dick and/or Dick’s employees, Rich said. Rich learned firsthand the meaning of his father’s motto: “Keep moving; stay busy; work hard.”

After earning his business degree, Rich worked in the corporate world.

Rich said he liked the job but returned to R. Berti & Son. Rich wanted to be

part of the legacy his family had built in his hometown.

“We’re known for doing good-quality work and for being honest with people. He [Dick] definitely was that way,” Rich said. “He always went out of his way to do good work and do the right thing, even if it was harder for him.”

Rich feels the stellar relationships his father built with the local business community enabled him to give credits to his clients.

“As long as projects went well, he always felt like trying to help them in the end,” Rich said. “He wanted to give back to them.”

“Mary Sharpe was quite a dynamic woman,” she said. “She would have one big day for Kwanzaa. We would have the candle lighting, the feast and the gifts on that one day.”

just clients – with kindness and genuine friendliness. He knew the names of the waitresses and the busboys at all of his favorite restaurants and always spent a few minutes chatting with them, Carol said.

“He knew everybody,” Carol said.

“He was really good at making sure everybody felt good.”

Rich said his father also helped out anyone in need, whether that person was a client, friend or family member.

Dick put family first and brought people together; he grew a business through personalized service and no shortcuts.

“I think we all take it for granted,” Rich said of himself and the other R. Berti & Son employees. “That’s the way we all learned it, and that’s the way the business still is.”

In his free time, Dick, a trained carpenter, wood-worked (“He liked anything he could do with his hands,” Rich said), camping near the Kankakee River (“My parents lived there for weeks at a time,” Carol said) and fishing.

But even when fishing, Dick treated the fish with kindness, too.

“He never caught anything,” Carol said, “and he threw it back if he did.”

“I think it’s important for black kids in particular who don’t know black history,” she said, noting that Kwanzaa may be one of the few times children learn much about their African heritage and the values that it can teach.

“We all contribute to this world,” she said. “We all have something important to contribute.”

My best memories from Christmas past I didn’t quite get a Christmas baby in 1992, but I was in the hospital that Christmas after having delivered my beautiful son, Steve, just two days before.

I was several weeks overdue with my second child, so my OB/GYN figured it would be safe to induce labor Dec. 22 and have us out in time to celebrate the holiday with our 3-year-old son.

But baby Steve didn’t want to cooperate, so after nearly 24 hours of labor, he was finally born by C-section Dec. 23, and we spent Christmas Day at St. Joseph Medical Center.

Unbeknownst to his big brother, Pete, we held Christmas off a few days until everyone could get home and settled. Then all the gifts Santa had brought for Pete were put under the tree.

I don’t know whether it was Pete’s favorite Christmas – he not only got

to come along. It was the best trip ever.

Son Pete can’t really recall the best gift he ever got, but at 27, he is certain Christmas just keeps getting better each year.

“I like it more every year because it’s about spending time with my family,” he said. “The meaning of it has changed for me.”

He enjoys the time we spend, the things we do and the stuff we find to laugh about.

“So last year was probably my favorite,” he said, “but this year will be even better.”

My older neighbors, Dorothy and Joe Macejik, are expecting their entire family over the next couple of days to celebrate Christmas. This may be one of Joe’s favorite all-time Christmases, he said.

Another favorite Christmas of mine was the year I asked for (and received) my sons to go on a trip to Alaska with me. The trip was actually for my mom after my dad passed away. My father had been stationed in Fairbanks when he was in the Army, so my sister and I came up with the idea to take mom on an Alaskan cruise, with a stop in Denali and Fairbanks.

My sons were so excited that I was getting to go, I asked for nothing else for Christmas except tickets for them

This is a good holiday for the Macejiks considering some runs of bad luck they’ve had over the past few years. They collided with a semitrailer on a trip back from out East a couple of years ago, leaving Joe with a broken neck. The good news was they discovered an artery blockage, but he had to have open-heart surgery this past year.

Now the two seniors are in good health and waiting eagerly to see their family.

“To have all of them together at our age is so nice,” Joe said. “The Good Lord gives you only so much time. This will be a nice time to say Merry Christmas.”

JOLIET – The city has a busy year ahead redeveloping downtown, preparing for a Houbolt Road bridge and making room for new industrial development.

The city also anticipates taking over Evergreen Terrace at some point, although the process already has lingered months longer than expected.

“All year long, we’ll have the construction of the train station in the downtown area,” City Manager Jim Hock said as he listed off a long to-do list for 2017.

The train station is slated to open by the end of the year and is part of what is expected to be a big year for downtown.

The city continues to negotiate with the county for land that will allow the long-sought reconnection of South Chicago Street with the section of the thoroughfare that goes through the heart of downtown. This project is seen as key to rejuvenating downtown business.

If all goes well, construction could begin by the fall.

“Phase one engineering is about complete on the opening of Chicago Street,” Hock said.

Other downtown projects include reconstruction of a plaza area outside the old Union Station, which the city owns, to be used as a beer garden for a brew pub slated to open next year.

Plainfield looks to enhance transportation in 2017

mmallory@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – The village of Plainfield is a crossroads of major state highways, a U.S. highway, an interstate and railroads.

The village’s population has grown nearly 10 times over, from 4,557 in 1990 to 42,138 in 2015. It makes sense then, that infrastructure would need large improvements. The village expects a population of 62,000 in 2030.

Plainfield is in the middle of several major transportation projects, either in a lead role or supporting role, that will enhance transportation for those living

Continued from page 7 water and sewer lines for the new county courthouse, although construction of the building will not begin in 2017.

Elsewhere in Joliet, the future Houbolt Road bridge is one of the biggest projects in the city.

Joliet expects to hire a project manager in June for the city’s end of the project, the improvement of Houbolt

in and moving through the village.

In 2017, village officials are planning to take big steps toward having a transportation system that meets the needs of its growing population.

The largest project going on within village limits is the reconstruction of Route 30 from Route 59 to Interstate 55. The village should be a major beneficiary after completion of this large state project, which began in 2015. The Illinois Department of Transportation is on track to finish the Route 30 reconstruction by the end of 2017, officials have said.

Officials also want to complete improvements to 127th Street by the end

of 2017. The village plans to reconstruct the roadway from Heggs Road to Route 30.

According to the village’s strategic plan, this section of roadway was made for rural traffic and is outdated. It lacks streetlights and walkways.

The village will be responsible only for $673,000 of the costs while a $2 million federal grant will cover most of the costs.

Finally, as the village has continued to expand and road improvements alleviate traffic congestion, village officials want to create transportation alternatives in these corridors by constructing new pedestrian sidewalks and bicycle

pathways.

According to the village’s most recent strategic plan, officials want to work closely with the Plainfield Park District, Forest Preserve District of Will County, Will County, Kendall County and the state of Illinois in supporting the construction of new pathways along Route 30, 248th Street and 127th Street.

A goal is to “install new pathways along 248th Street, 127th Street and Route 30 in an effort to close the pathway gaps in these areas.”

Attempts to reach Mayor Mike Collins and Village Administrator Brian Murphy for this story were unsuccessful.

Road and reconstruction of the Interstate 80 interchange. Gov. Bruce Rauner was in Joliet in 2016 to announce public-private funding for the project.

CenterPoint Properties is funding the bridge.

Meanwhile, city officials also will pursue state assistance for a future development at Interstates 55 and 80.

Cullinan Properties acquired land in the northeast corner of the interchange for future development of retail and office space. But there is no access off the interstates to the site, which is

needed for the development.

Joliet also will continue to see industrial development.

Three distribution centers under construction include one for Ikea furniture at 1.4 million square feet, another for Mars candy at 1.3 million square feet, and a third for Whirlpool appliances at 750,000 square feet.

Another highlight in 2017 will be the opening of Cadence Premier Logistics, a trucking operation that will include a corporate headquarters.

Meanwhile, the controversial and long-delayed city takeover of Evergreen Terrace should happen sometime next year.

Hock said the U.S. Supreme Court has declined to hear an appeal from the owners of the low-income apartment complex. But the complexities of the takeover and ongoing litigation make it hard to say when the city will take ownership.

Said Hock, “We will be taking possession hopefully by spring.”

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet District 86 officials are gearing up for widespread projects next year that include a new student information system, facilities assessments and an internet-based phone system.

Superintendent Theresa Rouse said the Aspen Student Information System, or SIS, will launch next year.

In April, the board adopted a service agreement with McHenry-based Follett School Solutions for its student information system.

According to the company’s website, Aspen SIS is a “centralized platform for hosting and managing student data.” The system stores information such as class schedules, school events, student performance, athletic

eligibility, health records and more.

“Aspen thus eliminates the need for multiple databases and streamlines the process of reporting student data, creating instructional plans, and applying state-specific guidelines,” the company stated.

District 86 officials have said they needed to upgrade and modernize its student information system and a roughly 40-member administrative committee consisting of board members, faculty and staff had reviewed products before selecting Aspen SIS. For other technology initiatives next year, Rouse said, the new phone system will be installed. The board approved a five-year lease agreement Dec. 10 for a voice-over internet protocol – or VOIP – by Mokena-based Rival5 Technologies Corp.

information services and technology director, has said the new system “stands to save the district a significant amount of money” and provide features not included in the district’s current phone system.

According to the district, the fiveyear savings on the new phone system would be more than $1.2 million, including enhanced 911 calls, call mask-

ing and other features.

Lastly, the district has begun efforts to assess the conditions of its buildings. The board approved an agreement with STR Partners of Chicago to perform a facilities condition assessment for 23 sites within District 86.

“That will help us lead into facility master planning for whatever we need to do with our facilities,” Rouse said.

STR Partners stated to district officials that the facilities condition assessment study will include observing the building systems and component and site conditions to identify physical deficiencies.

The company will also form remediation budgets to create a database for “future expenditure planning and capital expenditure management.”

If I haven’t stopped at every place in town, I’m pretty close. Go ahead, do a road trip like I did, it was a lot of fun. But I’m telling you, it’s a waste of time, I’ve already done it, and Babe’s has the best Poorboy around. So I sat there, enjoyed my Poorboy, an ice cold beer and watched the game on tv. I was tempted to play the video gaming but I ran out of time. PHILIP M. DUFFIN SR. Philip M. Duffin Sr., age 72, passed away Thursday, Dec. 22, at St. Patrick’s Residence in Naperville; late of Romeoville, formerly of Joliet.

Philip was a retired Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor for the State of Illinois, giving more than 32 years of service. He later retired in 2012 as a Bus Driver for Joliet Township High School after 8 years of service. Philip was also a dedicated parishioner at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Joliet, where he was a Lector at Sunday Mass, a Eucharistic Minister delivering Communion to the elderly and sick, and a Religious Education Teacher. His memberships included the School Board, R.C.I.A., and Light of the World Prayer Group.

He is survived by his loving wife, Janet (nee Peterek) Duffin; children, Jennifer (Frank) Reyes, Philip M. (Julie) Duffin Jr., Marie (Kim Knowles) Duffin, and Ann (Casey) McCambridge; siblings, MaryEllyn (Daniel) Peterek, Thomas (Sherry) Duffin, and Patricia (Irvin) Gibson; grandchildren, Megan, Jacob, Gabriela, Joshua, and Leah Reyes; Drew, Olivia, and Natalie Duffin; Madeline and Audrey McCambridge; also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins, including loving cousins, Donna (Guinto) Wisemantle and the late Raymond Dean Guinto.

He enjoyed music, singing and especially playing the organ and piano.

Born November 25, 1939 in Joliet, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Josephine (nee Paone) Garavalia. She was a beautician and a homemaker. Janet was a caring and giving person, always helping others. She loved working in the kitchen at Billie Limacher Bicentennial Park and serving meals for the needy at Shepherd’s Table. She loved baking her Christmas breads and cookies, crocheting and crafts, gardening and keeping a spotless home. She enjoyed the peace and quiet during their summer vacations at their cottage in Wisconsin.

Loving mother of Judith (Jeffrey) Wiedmeyer, Susan (James) Mammosser, and Brian (Kim) Hintz; grandmother of Alan and Amanda Wiedmeyer, Nicholas and Rachel Mammosser, Abby, Tony and Samantha Hintz; one great-grandchild, Kylee; and her sister, Norma (the late John) Airola. Bill was preceded in death by Valerie, his beloved wife of 65 years. His parents, Louis and Margaretta Jacques and his sister, Beverly Taylor and her husband Howard.

Bill was born on November 28, 1928, in Joliet, the son of Louis and Margaretta (nee Brown) Jacques. He married Valerie Ellen Adams on May 9, 1951 in Joliet. Bill graduated from Joliet Township High School Class of 1946; attended Joliet Junior College, then the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign graduating in 1950 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He became a proud member of the Illinois chapter of Acacia Fraternity while at U of I. Bill then served in the U.S. Army between 1951 and 1953 and is a Korean War Veteran. He married Val, his high school sweetheart, while on a short leave and they made their first home in Texarkana, TX. He was employed by the Commonwealth Edison Co. beginning in 1950 as a Field Engineer. He retired in 1989 as the Superintendent of Meter Systems after 38 years of service. Bill was a longtime civic and educational volunteer.

He was active on his high school class reunion committee for decades, a board member of two homeowners’ associations and a leader of the referendum committee which funded the construction of Troy Cronin School. He also was a Joliet West Band Booster, serving as president for one year, and a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church of Joliet.

He dearly loved his family and especially found much joy following the activities of his ten grandchildren. Bill took great pleasure in being a husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed traveling, family vacations, wood-working and home improvement projects. His family would like to extend a special thanks to Amy Buza, Emma Stark and the rest of the FirstLight Homecare staff, and to Joliet Area Community Hospice for the kind and compassionate care given to Bill.

Jim is survived by his beloved daughters, Mary (Dan) Carlson and Lisa (Randy) Maxwell; granddaughter, Brittany Viano; as well as numerous cousins, in-laws, and friends.

Preceded in death by his loving wife, Mary Ann (Belay) Ravetto and his parents.

Jim worked for 35 years at the Seven-Up Bottling Company in Joliet. He was a sports enthusiast and avid New York Yankees fan.

After he arrived in the United States, Hector sponsored many families emigrating from Cuba and assisted Vietnamese families who fled during the conflict in Vietnam. During the Mariel boat lift in the early 1980s, Hector purchased a boat, hired a captain and set sail for Cuba to bring his wife’s parents and a cousin to the United States. He lived a life of purpose and courage.

He continued his teaching career when he settled in Joliet and taught Spanish for twenty years at Joliet Catholic High School. He also taught for 5 years at Aurora East High School and retired from teaching after this time.

Hector also taught ESL classes in the community, sold insurance, and was quick to help others.

He had one lifelong love, Erena, who was by his side until the very end. In their retirement years they enjoyed vacations with their children, spending time with their grandchildren, and the company of their many friends, who were always welcome in their home and never left without a cup of Cuban coffee.

The family wishes to express gratitude to Hector’s physicians, the home health workers from Silver Cross Hospital and the staff at Joliet Area Community Hospice. Their care and attention in his final days meant so much to the family.

Lila M. Konow, age 87, of Homer Glen, passed away peacefully Friday, December 23, 2016 at her late residence. Born in Homer Township and was a lifelong resident.

Lila was an avid gardener; an animal lover; loved to make catnip balls to donate to TLC Animal shelter for fundraising; enjoyed raising chickens, hens, peacocks, ducks and various other farm animals. A big supporter of Smile Train for children and St. Labre Indian School for needy native children.

house. She then was employed by Electromotive in LaGrange, IL. In 1976 she and Mack proudly built their second house in Channahon. Barbara was a dedicated wife, supporting her husband’s groups, The Flying Bunch and the River Rats, his love of the river and much time spent at the beloved Valhalla. Barbara ministered to her community and friends through groups such as the Red Hat Club and numerous book clubs and was very active in her church, Grace Bible. Her favorite place to minister was at the dining room table, eating her delicious food.

After her husband’s death in 1990 she went back to college at Moody Bible Institute to pursue her ministry and spent 2 years in Russia, 1 year in China and also traveled to Guatemala, Uganda and various other destinations.

Following her mission work she came home to dedicate the rest of her time to becoming the best Grandma Butterfly anyone could ask for.

Barbara instilled the love of travel into all of her children by taking them on various trips all over the country. She was an amazing, caring and loving mom, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend who will be truly missed.

MANILA, Philippines – A typhoon that spoiled Christmas Day in parts of the Philippines weakened slightly Monday as it roared toward a congested region near the country's capital, officials said.

They said Typhoon Nock-Ten killed at least one person and cut power to five provinces as well as displaced thousands in Asia's Catholic bastion.

Although it slightly weakened, the typhoon still had sustained winds of up 90 mph, government forecasters said, and was moving toward the heavily populated provinces of Batangas and Cavite

Massive WWII bomb defused in German town

FRANKFURT, Germany – Explosives experts on Sunday defused a large World War II aerial bomb in the southern German city of Augsburg – clearing the way for thousands of evacuated residents to return to their Christmas celebrations at home.

City police tweeted that they had "good news at Christmas" just before 7 p.m. local time Sunday.

Former Gov. Rod Blagojevich awaits decision on commutation from Obama

CHICAGO – One of the last chances for former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich to win early release from federal prison rests on a pending decision by the man whose Senate seat Blagojevich was convicted of trying to sell – President Barack Obama.

Blagojevich, 60, is in the fourth year of a 14-year prison term. He recently submitted a request to have his sentence on wide-ranging corruption convictions commuted, the U.S. Department of Justice has confirmed.

Obama has rarely mentioned his fellow Chicago Democrat since Blagojevich’s December 2008 arrest, a month after Obama won the presidency, so it’s hard to gauge whether he’d give Blagojevich’s request for a reduced sentence serious thought.

A look at the commutation process and factors that could influence a decision:

What it is

A commutation is a reduction of a sentence, while pardons amount to forgiveness of a crime that also removes restrictions on rights to run for office and vote. In federal cases, only presidents have the power to reduce a sentence.

If Obama doesn’t get around to deciding on Blagojevich’s application before his last day in office, he would leave it for someone else with a tie to the ex-governor to decide: President-elect Donald Trump.

Blagojevich was on Trump’s “Celebrity Apprentice” TV show in 2010. While Trump eventually “fired” Blagojevich as a contestant,

he praised Blagojevich for how he fought his criminal case, telling him, “You have a [heck] of a lot of guts.”

Among the factors Obama can consider is whether Blagojevich’s punishment was disproportionate to the crime. His 14-year prison term was the longest for an Illinois politician for corruption and his lawyers argue it was too severe.

Convictions

Blagojevich’s bid to trade an appointment to the Senate seat Obama vacated for campaign cash is regarded as one of the most shocking instances of corruption in U.S. history. A FBI recording notoriously captured a foul-mouthed Blagojevich gushing about how he could profit from an appointment to Obama’s seat: “I’ve got this thing and it’s [expletive] golden. And I’m just not giving it up for [expletive] nothing.”

Blagojevich was convicted on 18 corruption counts, which also included a bid to shake down a children’s hospital. While an appellate court later dismissed five counts and ordered Blagojevich be resentenced, his trial judge imposed the same 14-year term earlier this year.

Blagojevich’s projected release date is in 2024.

Odds

Chances of Obama granting Blagojevich’s request would seem slim.

Blagojevich’s arrest in 2008 was an embarrassment coming as Obama was about to enter the White House, and it seems unlikely Obama would want to renew any association with the disgraced Democrat as he leaves the White House.

No local tournaments for area boys teams

Shaw Media correspondent JOLIET – For the first time in recent memory, a holiday boys basketball tournament will not be played in the Joliet area.

Romeoville decided not to hold its annual tournament this year, so area teams will scatter to 11 Illinois sites for the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day. It’s one of the annual holiday traditions that area high school teams have participated in for years. They have the opportunity not only for great and different competition, but also a chance to bond as a team on the road.

Joliet Central and Plainfield South will travel to Bloomington for the State Farm Holiday Classic beginning Tuesday.

The Cougars will play Chicago’s North Lawndale in their 6 p.m. opener and the Steelmen will take on Normal Community at 9 p.m.

Both opening games will be played at Normal West. The Shirk Center, on the Illinois Wesleyan campus, also will play host to many of the tournament’s games.

Central coach Lawrence Thompson Jr. will be coaching at a different holiday tournament for the first time.

The former Lockport mentor always attended the Pontiac Tournament.

“North Lawndale is the No. 1 seed,” Thompson said. “They’re ranked as one of the best seeds in the Chicago area. Rock Island is No. 2, and they’re getting votes in the state poll. Hononegah is No. 3 and its only loss is to Rockford Boylan, and you know how difficult it is to play there. Wheaton Warrenville South is No. 4, and they just beat Wheaton North, which is

“We get Normal Community, the host team, first. They drilled us in the summer at the Morris Shootout.

They’re big. They go about 6-foot-6. I hope we can get them to play too fast for their liking. It will be a great time being at the tournament. The kids will learn a lot from me about what to expect. It’s way different than Pontiac, where I went for all those years. We’ll play four games no matter, and that’s

This year Bolingbrook will play in the Hinsdale Central Holiday Classic.

The Raiders, currently ranked sixth in the state, will open on Tuesday at 2 p.m. against Glenbrook North.

Only one word needs to be spoken in the high school boys basketball community around the holidays – Pontiac.

It is one of the oldest, if not the oldest holiday basketball tournament in the nation. It is in its 86th year and it encompasses three days, starting on Wednesday.

This year’s Pontiac field is loaded with three of the top five ranked teams in the state, all of which are undefeated. Chicago’s Curie (9-0) is the top-ranked team, Chicago’s Simeon (6-0) is ranked second and Joliet West (10-0) is ranked fifth.

Add in perennial powers such as Benet Academy, Bloom Township and Peoria Manual, and you have arguably the best holiday tournament in the state.

Lockport, a traditional Pontiac entrant, and Plainfield North also are in the field.

West will play a 2:30 p.m. game on Wednesday against Niles West. The Tigers had a good showing last year in beating Benet and then losing a heartbreaker to Manual, and then falling to Simeon.

Tigers coach Nick DiForti knows that his veterans learned from last year and that this is a different season.

“This year is different,” DiForti said. “We have goals in mind that we addressed at the beginning of the season. We are mentally tougher than we were last year. Our kids have matured as players and young men. One of those goals is to not only get back to the semifinals, but play in the championship.

“We want to assess what we’re really made of. We have been playing good basketball thus far this season, but going to Pontiac, where there are six top 25 teams and close to eight teams with zero or one loss, will be a major test for us.”

Lockport will open its Pontiac play with a 6 p.m. game against Benet.

The Porters are coming off a good win against Rock Island on the road and hope to continue that momentum and a tradition that few have in Pontiac.

Lockport is a mainstay at the tournament and among the top teams in both years played and overall wins.

It’s a tradition like no one else has in the area.

Porters coach Brett Hespell is well aware of the tradition and the importance, not only to Lockport, but also to the town of Pontiac.

“This is a special tournament and one that Lockport is very proud to be a part of,” Hespell said. “Our kids know the importance and tradition of Pontiac. They look forward to this every year. They always talk about the traditional places Lockport teams eat some of their meals when in Pontiac.

“We are playing a little better and learning every time we step on the floor. We have a tough group of kids, who will battle whatever team they face. You can look ahead, you take them one game at a time. No matter

what happens, you are facing great competition each game, and that will help you later in the season.”

Plainfield North has the task of kicking off the area’s games with a 10:30 a.m. matchup against Simeon.

North has had success at Pontiac, winning the consolation bracket two of the last three years and battling Lockport in the third place game in 2011.

“We are rebuilding this year,” North coach Bob Krahulic said. “We also know who we’re facing, but we

will compete with anyone. We have had success at this tournament in the past. Just because you could lose the first game, it doesn’t mean it’s over.

“Look at this year’s field, it’s loaded. You go into each game and compete, you learn. This will help later in the season. When you look at a calendar, it’s still December.”

Some of the best basketball in the state may be played in a small town just 50 miles south of our area, over a three-day stretch, starting Wednesday. It’s a tradition unlike any other.

Area athletes in several bowl games

cherron@shawmedia.com Over 20 athletes formerly from area schools are on the roster for college football teams who will take part in bowl games that start today and run through Jan. 2.

In games that will be played today, Plainfield North graduate Kyle Speas is a freshman tight end at Miami of Ohio, which faces Mississippi State in the St. Petersburg Bowl.

Lincoln-Way West graduate Justin Witt is a freshman offensive lineman at North Carolina State, which meets Vanderbilt in the Independence Bowl.

On Tuesday, Minnesota takes on Washington State in the Holiday Bowl. Bolingbrook graduates and twin brothers Jacob and Julian Huff, and Plainfield North redshirt senior defensive back Alexander Starks, are on the Golden Gophers.

The Huffs are sophomores and Jacob is a defensive back while Julian is a linebacker. Both have played in 12 games, with Julian recording 29 tackles, forcing two fumbles and also recovering two.

Northwestern, which meets Pittsburgh on Wednesday in the Pinstripe Bowl, has four players from area schools on the roster. Lemont graduate Flynn Nagel, a sophomore receiver, has played in 12 games and caught 37 passes for 421 yards and two scores, and also returned 19 punts for 132 yards.

Plainfield East graduate Tyler Lancaster, a junior defensive lineman, has played in 12 games and has 26 tackles with 3.5 of those for loss.

Joliet Catholic graduate J.B. Butler, a redshirt sophomore, has started the last few games at left guard and Bolingbrook graduate Parrker Westphal is a redshirt sophomore defensive back.

Also on Wednesday, Indiana faces Utah in the Foster Farms Bowl. Morris graduate Danny Friend, a redshirt junior tight end, has played in 12 games for the Hoosiers, while Lincoln-Way East graduate Jake Attar is a redshirt freshman defensive back.

On Friday, Nebraska plays Tennessee in the Music City Bowl.

Lincoln-Way West graduate Bryan Brokop is a freshman offensive lineman for the Cornhuskers.

The next day, Louisiana State meets Louisville in the Citrus Bowl.

Lemont graduate Ethan Pocic is a senior center for the Tigers. He’s started 11 games and was recognized as the SEC’s offensive lineman of the week three times this year.

Also Saturday, Ohio State meets Clemson in the Fiesta Bowl. Bolingbrook graduate Tuf Borland is a freshman linebacker for the Buckeyes.

Next Monday, Iowa plays Florida

in the Outback Bowl. Three Providence Catholic graduates are on the Hawkeyes roster. Senior Ryan Ward is an offensive lineman, his brother Kevin is a junior linebacker and Nate Vejvoda is a redshirt freshman tight end.

Also next Monday, Western Michigan meets Wisconsin in the Cotton Bowl. Romeoville graduate Caleb Bailey is a redshirt junior linebacker for the Broncos. He’s played in 13 games and has 66 tackles, seven for loss plus two interceptions and two fumble recoveries.

Plainfield East will travel to Pekin and kick off the holiday tournament on Tuesday with a 9 a.m. game against Moline.

At the Proviso West Holiday Tournament, which begins on Tuesday, Lincoln-Way West has the tournament’s first game at 9:30 a.m. against Chicago’s Bogan.

Lincoln-Way East will take the long drive to Teutopolis for its Christmas Classic and will begin play on Tuesday with a 2:30 p.m. game against Oak Lawn.

The area’s small schools also will be in action.

Reed-Custer, Gardner-South Wilmington, Seneca and Dwight will all play in the Marseilles Holiday Tournament, with Wilmington attending the Donovan Holiday affair and Coal City at the Plano Holiday Classic.

Aldridge’s season-high 33 help Spurs hold off Bulls

SAN ANTONIO – LaMarcus Aldridge had a season-high 33 points and the San Antonio Spurs held on to beat the Bulls, 119-100, on Sunday after nearly blowing a hot start.

Kawhi Leonard added 25 points, 10 rebounds and four assists. Tony Parker had 13 points and eight assists.

The Bulls rallied from a 20-point deficit to lead by three points midway through the third quarter but could not sustain the push, taking its third straight loss.

Parker had nine points in the final quarter while San Antonio improved to 9-4 at home after losing three of its first four at the AT&T Center.

Dwyane Wade led the Bulls with 24 points, including 10 in the final quarter. Jimmy Butler added 19 points, and every Bulls’ starter except Rajon Rondo scored in double figures. Rondo was held to six points and two assists in 30 minutes.

The Spurs shot 82 percent while taking a 36-25 lead through one quarter. San Antonio doubled its lackluster 17-point opening quarter in its first meeting with the Bulls on Dec. 8.

San Antonio looked for Aldridge early, assisting on his first four field goals on a series of mid-range jumpers. Aldridge made his first nine attempts while scoring 20 points in the opening period, his most in any quar-

ter with the Spurs.

Aldridge made his first 11 attempts, finishing 15 for 20 from the field.

With Aldridge rolling, Leonard hit consecutive 3-pointers for a 14-3 lead.

The All-Star duo combined for 41 points in the opening period, but the Bulls kept pace with a balanced scoring effort fueled by their bench.

Reserve forward Nikola Mirotic had 11 points, including three 3-pointers, two steals and four rebounds in the first half. Jerian Grant added five points and two steals.

Butler’s 3-pointer gave the Bulls their first lead, at 70-67, with 5 minutes remaining in the third.

San Antonio regained its double-digit lead, at 95-82, on consecutive 3-pointers by Danny Green with Wade shaking his head after running over late to defend.

Good news for Bears: Only 1 game left in dismal season

LAKE FOREST – Good news for the Bears: only one game remains.

They will try to finish a rough season on a strong note when they visit Minnesota. Then they can address a long list of issues after taking a big step backward.

“As a team, we don’t care what our record is, we might be losing, but we’re going to come back and fight and give it our best shot,” running back Jordan Howard said. “We don’t have a ‘don’t care’ mentality. We are all going to fight to the finish.”

A 41-21 loss to Washington on Saturday was as ugly as any this season. It guaranteed the Bears (3-12) will at best match their worst record in 14 years and left open the possibility they will equal their lowest win total in a nonstrike year in more than four decades.

Those are striking numbers for a team that insists it is better than the record indicates and it is closer to a turnaround than people realize.

Still, what is the future of quarterback Jay Cutler? And there is no shortage of holes on the roster. Changes might also be in store for the coaching staff.

The fact the Bears were brutalized by injuries, with 19 players on injured reserve, sure didn’t help.

“I think better days are going to come,” coach John Fox said. “We see improvement. It’s not maybe in our record, but I think we’re closer than people think.”

The Bears went 6-10 last year in Fox’s first season in Chicago. The best they can hope for now is to finish 4-12 and match their worst record since 2002. If they lose to the Vikings, they’ll

finish with three wins in a non-strike year for the first time since the 1973 team went 3-11.

That’s not what the Bears envisioned. And even some of the bright spots are looking a little dimmer these days.

A defense that came in ranked ninth in the NFL gave up a season-high in yards for the second straight week, with the Redskins going for 478 after Green Bay finished with 451.

Promising rookie linebacker Leonard Floyd exited with a concussion for

the second time this season. The No. 9 overall pick, he was carted off from the sideline with a towel over his head in the second quarter, adding to an already long list of concerns for the Bears.

With his speed and athleticism, the 6-foot-6 Floyd is tied for second on the team with seven sacks. But questions about his durability linger.

He had surgery on both shoulders at Georgia. Floyd was slowed by hamstring and calf injuries this season. He suffered a concussion in a scary collision against the New York Giants last month, and he might have to miss the final game.

Meanwhile, quarterback Matt Barkley had his worst game. He threw five interceptions to match the second-highest total in franchise history – the most by a Bears’ quarterback since Cutler threw five against San Francisco in 2009. Barkley has been picked off eight times over the past two games. That gives him 12 interceptions and eight touchdowns over six appearances and five starts. It’s fair to wonder whether he’s playing his way out of Chicago just when it looked like he was making a case for a roster spot with the Bears or another team next season.

“I think I was standing in my way today, just in my own head, of trying to do too much and trying to win the game when we were down,” Barkley said.

“You just gotta treat it as a 0-0 game, make smart decisions with the ball and give our guys a chance to win.”

Big Ben, Steelers win AFC North after rallying by Ravens

The Associated Press PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Steelers rode Ben Roethlisberger’s right arm and Antonio Brown’s left arm to the AFC North title.

Roethlisberger shook off a pair of interceptions to throw two late touchdowns, including a 4-yard strike to Brown with 9 seconds remaining to lift the Steelers to a 31-27 victory over the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday night.

Brown caught Roethlisberger’s pass just short of the goal line and stretched the ball into the end zone with his left hand to cap a wild fourth quarter and give Pittsburgh (10-5) its second division title in three years.

The Ravens took the lead on Kyle Juszczyk’s 10-yard burst up the middle with 1:18 remaining. But Roethlis-

berger calmly led the Steelers 75 yards in 10 plays, the last four coming as Brown fought through a pair of tacklers to assure the Steelers of a third straight playoff berth.

“Right before we went out,” Brown said, “we said, ‘Let’s get the game-winning touchdown and get out of here.’ “ The Ravens (8-7) were officially eliminated when Joe Flacco’s pass near midfield was intercepted on the final play.

Kansas City secured a playoff berth with the Baltimore loss.

The Steelers have won six straight and ended a four-game losing streak to Baltimore.

Roethlisberger finished with 279 yards passing and three touchdowns to overcome two third-quarter interceptions. Those picks allowed the Ravens to take a 20-10 lead on Justin

Tucker’s fourth field goal with 14:21 to play.

Brown caught 10 passes for 96 yards to join Hall of Famer Marvin Harrison as the only players with four straight seasons with at least 100 receptions.

Le’Veon Bell ran for 122 yards and a 7-yard touchdown that kick-started Pittsburgh’s rally during a fourth quarter that featured 31 combined points and three lead changes in the final 7:16.

Flacco passed for 262 yards, including a pretty 18-yard dart to Steve Smith that put Baltimore up 14-10 early in the third quarter. Smith ended up with seven receptions for 79 yards, but the Ravens crumbled late. Their defense put up little resistance as Roethlisberger clinically got his team in position to get back to the playoffs.

It’s a destination that seemed to be

disappearing right in front of Pittsburgh’s eyes in the third quarter.

Roethlisberger threw a pair of interceptions deep in Pittsburgh territory – both poorly thrown balls to heavily covered targets – that helped the Ravens take control.

“I kind of dug ourselves a hole,” Roethlisberger said. “I take all that blame. We never quit and never gave up. Guys fought back.”

Indeed, with a season once filled with such promise slipping away, the Steelers turned to their three big stars.

PLAINFIELD – Don’t be surprised to find the newest Plainfield Academy employee Leroy taking a midday nap on the floor.

And don’t be concerned if his boss, academy Assistant Principal Karyn Holstead doesn’t mind, because Leroy is the school’s new facility dog.

The almost two-year-old golden retriever came from the Indiana Canine Assistant Network or ICAN, which trains therapy and facility dogs to assist people with emotional and physical disabilities.

Leroy is the school’s second facility dog. He replaces Jada who retired in 2014 after serving the school for about five years. Wesmere Elementary School and Aux Sable Middle School also have used therapy dogs.

Holstead and academy social worker Kara Grudzien spent two weeks at ICAN in Indiana training with Leroy.

Holstead will own Leroy after his one-year probationary period at the academy.

Leroy already is helping students in his first few days on the job, Holstead said.

He can “nudge” a student’s head up off a desk if the student has shut down emotionally, she said. He also visits and hugs students who are anxious or in crisis.

Some pharmacies have been administering the flu vaccine as early as the middle of August. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing for someone older than 65 or someone with chronic illnesses, because you still get immunity from the vaccine that should last through much of the flu season. Still, it’s probably better to wait until at least the middle of September to get the flu vaccine just to ensure you’re protected for as much of the flu season as possible.

Finally, it’s especially important to get yearly flu vaccines if you are: older than 60; between the ages of 6 months and 4 years; have chronic illnesses; or are pregnant.

The flu is especially risky for these groups.

While imperfect, the flu vaccine is the best way our society has found to decrease the death rates and the long-term complications from a potentially fatal disease that causes anywhere from 3,300 to 49,000 deaths per year in the United States.

Dear Doctor: If I received the flu shot in September, will I still be protected from the flu in March?

Dear Reader: That’s a very good question – and the answer depends, in part, on your current health.

The flu season normally lasts from November to March, but it can begin in October and even end in May. The injected influenza vaccine, which contains three to four inactivated viruses from the prior flu season, spurs the formation of antibodies to help your body fight off influenza if you’re exposed. It takes about two weeks after the vaccine for your body to produce sufficient protective antibodies.

If you are a healthy person younger than 50, you’re more likely to get a good immune response from the vaccine – and also more likely to have an immune response that lasts six to 12 months. You’ll also have a greater and longer-lasting immune response if you get the flu vaccine every year.

So if you got your shot in September, you should have immunity that lasts throughout the flu season.

If you’re older than 50 and have diabetes, cancer, or kidney or liver failure, your ability to mount a good response from the vaccine decreases. So six months after your vaccination, you may not have sufficient antibodies to ward off the flu. This has been shown specifically for the H1N1 influenza virus. If you received the vaccine on Sept.

1, you may be less protected by April of the following year against H1N1.

My husband has out-of-town relatives who fly in using frequent flier miles. They get picked up from the airport on arrival and returned to the airport for departure. They spend a week here eating, drinking and being entertained. Never once have they offered to buy any food, help with meals or take us out for dinner. If we go out for a meal, it is always our treat.

They brag nonstop about how much money they are saving, and they could well afford to be gracious. This has been happening for 15 years.

My husband is aware of how I feel, but has asked me to tolerate them because they are the only blood relatives he’s in contact with outside of our family. I am left to do the laundry and cleaning after they leave. They have a nice vacation, and I feel used and abused. South starts with six top tricks: one spade, two hearts, two diamonds and one club. He should hope that East has the club king and that he can get four heart tricks. What is the best play in the heart suit?

Ideally, you run the nine. Then, assuming it loses to the jack or queen, you cash the ace and king. Your chances are just under 50 percent.

Here, though, declarer’s communications are imperfect.

The simplest-looking line is to win the first trick with dummy’s diamond king and to lead a club toward the queen. Suppose East takes that trick and returns a diamond. South should win that, cash the club queen, then lead a low heart from his hand. Yes, the defenders take that trick and two diamond winners, but when hearts prove to be 3-3, declarer is home.

Note, though, that if East had shifted to the spade four at trick three, it would have defeated the contract -- not easy.
