JOLIET – The city council Tuesday gave conditional approval to $500,000 for the Rialto Square Theatre in 2017.

The conditions were not announced, but the council voted, 6-2, to fund the Rialto subject to an intergovernmental agreement yet to be reached.

The city is revising an intergovernmental agreement proposed by the Rialto. City officials would not discuss what is going into the revisions.

But they could involve some changes at the Rialto, one council member said.

Mayor Bob O’Dekirk said at the Tuesday meeting that the agreement would be “fair for the theater” and “good for the city of Joliet.”

Afterward, he refused to discuss details of the revised agreement, which has yet to be presented to the Rialto board.

Council members, while they would not discuss the agreement revisions, did sug-

gest that the issue of Rialto funding in 2017 is not settled yet.

“We’ll see what happens,” Councilwoman Jan Quillman said when asked why she voted for funding after strongly expressing frustration with Rialto operations at a special council meeting last week.

Councilwoman Bettye Gavin said at last week’s meeting that she could not vote for Rialto funding under the terms of the intergovernmental agreement that the theater had proposed. Asked Tuesday why she voted for Rialto funding, Gavin said, “It’s up to the Rialto now.”

O’Dekirk at last week’s meeting did pose the possibility of asking for the resignations of all the city appointees on the Rialto board so he could appoint new members.

That prospect was not discussed Tuesday.

The mayor appoints four members of the Rialto board, and the governor appoints three.

The council voted, 6-2, to add the $500,000 requested by the Rialto to the city budget, which was approved Tuesday. Voting

against Rialto funding were Larry Hug and Brooke Hernandez Brewer.

The council also decided not to move ahead with a proposal to seek a change in state legislation so that ownership of the Rialto could be transferred to the city. A resolution to pursue the transfer was removed from the agenda as the council also added the $500,000 in Rialto funding to the budget.

The Rialto is governed under the Will County Metropolitan Exposition Auditorium Authority, a unit of government created by state law when the Rialto was saved from demolition planned by its previous private owners.

VenuWorks, the outside company hired in August to manage the Rialto, had asked the city for $500,000 to cover a projected deficit in 2017.

The city has provided the Rialto with funding for years and contributed $600,000 to theater operations in 2016. But the relationship between the city and theater became strained this year as financial conditions at the Rialto worsened.

Joliet D-204 officials seek $7 million bond, tax levy

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet High School District 204 officials plan to issue upwards of $7 million in working cash fund bonds to complete a variety of infrastructure and maintenance projects.

The District 204 board approved in a 5-0 vote at Tuesday’s meeting a resolution declaring intention to issue in amounts not to exceed $7 million in working cash fund bonds to increase the district’s working cash fund.

Board member R. Dale Evans was absent at the meeting and board member Tyler Marcum submitted his resignation because he was elected to the Will County Board.

For the bond issue, there will be a 30day petition period beginning Wednesday.

If 10 percent – or 7,271 – of registered voters submit a petition to the district within that period, the bond issue will need to be approved by referendum.

a public hearing on the issue at the Jan. 17 meeting, according to a Dec. 20 memo from Ilandus Hampton, assistant superintendent for business services. After the public hearing, the district will approve a parameters bond resolution at the Feb. 21 meeting.

The funds from the bonds will be used to complete projects recommended from Strategy 5.2 of the district’s strategic plan, according to Hampton’s memo.

The district’s Strategy 5.2 action plan team identified several facility needs such as interior renovations, HVAC upgrades, electrical and technology infrastructure upgrades, athletic improvements and additions, new construction and life safety projects, according to a district presentation.

Hampton noted in the memo that in addition to the $7 million working cash funds, the district will authorize a refunding for savings on the Series 2007 bonds and this will allow the district to access additional funds to repay the $7 million new working cash.

Tax levy

The board also approved in a 5-0 vote the $67.2 million property tax levy, which is about 4.9 percent higher than last year’s tax extension. District officials said the annual impact of the levy will result in the following estimated tax increases: • $7 for a home with a $100,000 market value • $13 for a home with a $150,000 market value • $21 for a home with a $200,000 market value Hampton wrote in a Nov. 15 memo that the district experienced the first increase in equalized assessed property values in the past five years with a bump of 1.69 percent – a sign that the economy is improving.

“Based on the economy and conversations with the township assessors office, I am projecting a slight increase for the upcoming year. The assessor is hopeful that we will continue to realize increases in the coming years,” Hampton wrote.

A white Christmas in jeopardy as bitter cold makes way for mild forecast

mmallory@shawmedia.com JOLIET – More than three times the average snowfall – to this point in the calendar – has fallen in the Joliet area so far this month.

Yet winter didn’t officially start until Wednesday morning.

But for meteorologists, winter begins Dec. 1 and ends March 1. This three-month span is the coldest stretch in the Northern Hemisphere.

To meteorologists, it’s not a surprise that three measurable snowfalls have hit the area. It isn’t normal, however.

National Weather Service meteorologist Kevin Birk said Tuesday that not only has the area surpassed its average snowfall to this date, but it also has surpassed the average accumulation for the entire month of December.

Birk said the average snowfall as of this point in the calendar is 5.1 inches and the average December snowfall amounts to about 8.2 inches.

But three early-season snowfalls have blasted through those averages.

Joliet Weather Center Director Jeremy Hylka said he’s recorded 15.2 inches of snowfall so far in Joliet. The first snowfall – on the first weekend of the month – was 7.1 inches, the second

snowfall was 5.1 inches and the third – this past weekend – dropped 3 inches on the area.

Hylka said that though he didn’t have specific data on hand, he’s sure it’s the most snow the area has seen in recent years for this early in the season.

Though there’s snow all over the area now, warmer weather in the forecast have left some wondering whether there will be a white Christmas on Sunday.

“That’s the $10 million question,” Hylka said.

He said it appears the jet stream is fluctuating and will return the arctic, bitter air that has blanketed the

Midwest back to Canada. This should bring milder air to the Joliet area this week with high temperatures increasing by the day, until they hit the 40s on Christmas and higher on Monday.

“Our chance of a white Christmas is slipping away quickly because that snow cover will start to melt [when temperatures are above 32],” Hylka said.

The next storm slated for the area is expected to hit on Christmas Eve and Christmas.

“It’s a little early,” Hylka said. “But models are showing it may begin with

Agencies partner to donate carbon monoxide detectors

mmallory@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Police officers and firefighters were dispatched the morning of Nov. 21 to the 12700 block of Shelly Lane in Plainfield for a report of two people unresponsive in a home.

Denise Carlini, 65, and her daughter, Morgan D. Becker, 29, were pronounced dead at 11:09 a.m. at the scene, according to the Will County Coroner’s Office.

The cause of death was carbon monoxide poisoning. Though there were smoke and heat detectors in the home, there were no carbon monoxide detectors to alert anyone to the presence of the colorless, odorless gas.

“The officer that was in there the longest was in there less than 10 minutes,” Plainfield Police Chief John Konopek said. “The five officers that went in the house to do the search ended up going to the hospital to be treated for symptoms [from carbon monoxide poisoning].”

As a result of this unfortunate incident, the Plainfield Fire Protection District and Plainfield Police Department

“This is important. Especially in the winter months.”

Kidde Fire Safety community affairs manager has partnered with Kidde – a leading manufacturer of fire safety equipment – and the University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital. In February, a Plainfield resident also died because a vehicle was running in a garage.

Together, the Plainfield agencies and their new partners want to educate the community about the importance of early detection of carbon monoxide. Kidde is donating 150 detectors to Plainfield. In total, upwards of 350 detectors will be distributed to residents.

Plainfield Fire Chief David Riddle said he and members of the partnership are looking at ways to determine how to get the detectors to families most in need of them.

Each year, more than 400 Americans die from carbon monoxide poisoning. But Kidde Fire Safety community affairs manager Neal Zipser said

he believes the real number is actually higher.

The gas is produced anytime a fossil fuel is burned.

“This is important,” Zipser said.

“Especially in the winter months.”

Zipser said carbon monoxide poisonings spike in the winter because people heat their residences with ovens and use generators to power up their homes in extreme cases. Sometimes people neglect to get their furnace tested each year and something goes wrong the first couple of times they use it.

But in the Plainfield tragedy in November, the poisoning was because of an issue with the boiler. The exact cause within the boiler is yet to be determined.

“This is the worst thing I’ve ever gone through,” said Ray Carlini, husband of Denise Carlini. “If we had a detector, they probably would have gotten out and would still be alive today.”

Ray Carlini urged people to use carbon monoxide detectors.

“I want Denise and Morgan to maybe save a few lives out there,” he said.

“We can’t save theirs, but maybe we can save somebody else’s.”

Plainfield D-202 board OKs $194.4M levy

fsarver@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – The Plainfield School District 202 board approved a $194.4 million property tax levy at Monday’s meeting.

The levy – what school districts request to operate – passed 6-0, with board member Rod Westfall absent for the vote.

The levy is about 5 percent less than last year’s and district officials have projected the tax extension – or the amount the district actually receives – at about $183.6 million, nearly the same amount as the 2015 tax extension.

The official extension will be calculated after the district’s final equalized assessed property values – or EAV – is set next April, according to a district news release.

District officials stated that they anticipate the District 202 total tax rate

may fall from $6.24 per $100 of EAV in 2016 to about $5.70 per $100 of EAV in 2017, or about 8.6 percent, because of “rising property values, refinancing several bonds and conservative budgeting.”

Of the total amount of the 2016 levy, about $163.6 million will go to the districts’ operating funds: education, operations and maintenance, transportation, working cash, Illinois Municipal Employees Retirement Fund and tort.

Other board matters

The board also approved 6-0 a resolution to issue upwards of $56 million in general obligation refunding school bonds, Series 2017, for the purpose of refunding certain outstanding bonds of the district.

The board also approved of the following donations: • Curriculum and instruction: $250 donation from Spencer’s Books for

books from the curriculum library.

• Heritage Grove: $1,781 from the PTO for an ice maker for the nurse’s office, athletics and FACS class.

• Charles Reed: $14,049 from the PTA to purchase a stage.

• Grand Prairie: $659 from the PTO to purchase a Buddy Bench for students.

• Freedom: $17,927 from the PTO to purchase 13 SMART Boards and promounts.

• Eichelberger: $1,500 donation from Vulcan to pay for a third-grade field trip to Vulcan Quarry.

• Indian Trail: $3,928 to reimburse the Illinois biodiversity field trip grant from Illinois Conservation Foundation.

• Heritage Grove: $50 donation from Donate Well to be used for student activities.

• Indian Trail: $4,250 donation from Bentley Systems to be used for a STEM-focused purchase.

Lincoln-Way D-210 bond rating sinks to ‘junk’ status

NEW LENOX – Moody’s Investors Service downgraded Lincoln-Way District 210’s general obligation bond rating from Baa3 to Ba1 – or “junk” status – affecting $253 million of outstanding rated debt, according to the company’s website.

The downgrade reflects Lincoln-Way’s narrowing financial position, which has required increasing use of tax anticipation warrants, or short-term debt, according to Moody’s.

The downgrade also reflects the district’s elevated debt burden, with debt service costs that are scheduled to grow substantially.

The rating also takes into consideration the district’s positive credit attributes, including a very large tax base that “appears to be stabilizing following several years of depreciation and above average resident income indices,” the company stated.

“While officials are projecting significantly improved financial operations in fiscal 2017, the district has a history of negative variances and any unexpected revenue or expenditure pressures would place additional strain on district liquidity,” Moody’s stated.

Larkin-Glenwood traffic light out until Friday

JOLIET – Traffic lights at Larkin and Glenwood avenues will continue to be out of service until at least Friday, Joliet officials said.

The busy intersection has been converted to a four-way stop, leading to long lines of traffic, since an accident Sunday knocked out the traffic light controls.

It will take until at least Friday to replace the damaged equipment, city officials said.

“The traffic accident totally knocked out the traffic controller cabinet, a street light, and a few other things in the area,” Public Works Director James Trizna said.

Trizna said the city hoped to have the traffic light back in service by Friday.

But City Manager Jim Hock at the City Council meeting Tuesday said that depending on when equipment arrives, service may not be restored until the weekend.

Larkin and Glenwood are both major thoroughfares in Joliet. The loss of the traffic light has led to lines of vehicles stretching for a couple of blocks on Larkin during heavy travel times.

Board OKs levy, moves up late night bar hours for 2018

Shaw Media correspondent Channahon village trustees this week approved the village’s 2016 property tax levy of $2.319 million, which is 7 percent higher than its 2015 tax extension.

The resulting tax rate, at 0.7602, is the same as last year’s tax rate, according to Finance Director Heather Wagonblott, who said that with the increase in property tax revenue from a higher equalized assessed valuation within the district, the board chose not to increase the tax rate this year.

Also Monday, despite a last-minute appeal by a local bar owner, Channahon trustees approved changing the village’s liquor ordinance to pull back serving hours in bars by an hour on Fridays and Saturday nights.

Beginning January 2018, Channahon bars with Class A liquor licenses must stop serving alcohol at 2 a.m. on weekends, a measure Village President Missey Moorman Schumacher said will make the village safer and bring Class A licenses in line with

the village’s other licenses’ closing times.

Village Administrator Tom Durkin said earlier closings will likely keep the community and police officers safer and would bring bar hours more in line with those of surrounding communities.

The bars will still be allowed to close at 3 a.m. on New Year’s Eve, on the night of the official Channahon fireworks display; on the day preceding Thanksgiving; on St. Patrick’s Day if it falls on a Friday or Saturday or, if it falls on another day, the Saturday immediately preceding St. Patrick’s Day; and on one “floating” day per calendar year that can be chosen by the holder of the liquor license.

The ordinance change also will allow Class A liquor license holders, as well as holders of all other Channahon liquor license classes with the exception of package sales, to open two hours earlier on Sunday mornings – from the current 10 a.m. to 8 a.m. – beginning January 2017.

The earlier Sunday serving hours would benefit establishments wishing to serve patrons attending events

or starting Bloody Mary bars a little earlier, Durkin explained.

Trustees Sam Greco and Mark Scaggs voted against changing the ordinance. Trustees Debbie Militello, Chantal Host, Scott McMillin, Debbie Militello and Scott Slocum voted in favor of the changes.

Chris Sarris, owner of The Office Bar and Grill, said he would be losing 104 hours a year of prime serving time with the earlier weekend closings.

The loss of those hours would affect him and his employees in a big way, he said. He presented the board with a petition he said had signatures of more than 200 people who did not want shorter late-night hours for the bar.

“Even after being presented with the names of voters who oppose this change,” he said at Monday’s meeting, “the board, which was voted in by said citizens, is still entertaining this absurd proposal. .. Listen to the voices of those responsible to your held positions. Please reinforce the idea of democracy and vote against this proposal.”

Sarris said he didn’t understand why the changes were being made.

Police Chief Jeff Wold had given him a list of seven incidents officers had responded to during the 2 to 3 a.m. time slot at The Office or in the parking lot of the strip mall where the business is located.

Sarris said some of them can’t be attributed to his establishment, as they occurred in the parking lot.

One involved a reckless driving complaint. Wold said he couldn’t say that that complaint was due to the bar being open late hours.

However, four of the incidents occurred inside the bar after 2 a.m., according to Wold, including police responding to request to remove a belligerent male, intoxicated men yelling obscenities, and an intoxicated male being removed from the bar.

Wold said another report was from a woman who alleged she was battered at The Office.

Schumacher said the ordinance changes, though, were not directed at one or two businesses.

“This is based on an ordinance passed in 2003, long before I was here,” she said, “with the board’s intention to start scaling back hours.”

A remapping of the site shows the planned new station located farther east along the tracks and more centrally positioned with regard to access from the parking lots. The main entrance for parking will be on Prairie Street, which has a traffic signal and will be safer for commuters, Village Administrator Kurt Carroll said after the meeting.

Once construction starts on the CVS and the retail building, access to the station from Church Street will be closed, as it will be eliminated. Also, access to the station from Cedar Road will be open and closed at different times during the stages of construction. The Prairie Street entrance will remain open the entire time, Carroll said.

Carroll said the village’s plans for the new station still are in the early stages, but it will be bigger since the

current building “was not designed for as many commuters as we have today.”

Once the new businesses are completed and sales tax starts coming in, the village will be able to move forward with finalizing designs and expenses for the new station, Carroll said. It could be a few years until the station is completed, he said.

He added that construction costs could run from $3 million to $5 million, and while the financial burden does lie on the village, it is hoping to find additional sources for funding.

The two other measures approved were an easement agreement with Metra and a minor amendment to the CVS purchase agreement.

The village still is awaiting a “no further remediation” letter from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency for the former BP site, which will ensure that the ground is safe for further development before CVS can start its construction, Carroll said.

NEW LENOX – New Lenox commuters will see fewer parking spaces at the Metra station next spring as new retail construction is due to begin on the blighted corner of Route 30 and Cedar Road and the village looks to eventually build a larger building.

Board trustees approved three measures Monday night in conjunction with the project as they continue to finalize the last of the actions needed to be taken in order for the new CVS Pharmacy store and three new businesses to be built at the former BP gas station site.

Redevelopment of the blighted property is part of New Lenox’s plan to revitalize its downtown and build a new Metra station using sales tax revenues from the new businesses. It has taken a number of years to get to this juncture.

The village has spent about $2.9 mil-

lion with the purchase of the former gas station as well as a dry cleaners, a bar and the defunct House of Hughes restaurant, which were located on the site. All these buildings were demolished last year by the village.

CVS bought a large portion of the lot for $1.8 million from the village earlier this year. Heidner Properties Inc. bought the smaller 1-acre lot for about $450,000 last summer.

One of the measures approved Monday is an intergovernmental agreement with Metra, which outlines a reconfigured station location and parking lots on the site.

Sixty parking spaces closest to the project site will give way for the construction of Heidner’s 8,400-square-foot retail building, which eventually will house a Fleckenstein’s Bakery, a Zembar Jewelers and a Durbin’s restaurant, according to the agreement.

Shaw Media correspondent MINOOKA – After months of discussion, waiting on preliminary growth information and number crunching, the Minooka School District 201 school board voted unanimously at its regular meeting Monday to adopt the final 2016 tax levy.

Superintendent Kris Monn said in a phone interview that Kendall and Will counties have seen an equalized assessed value increases over last year ranging from 5 percent to 9 percent. He said Grundy is on track for an increase higher than 9 percent.

He said if the EAV jumps to 10 percent, which that it could, then the tax rate will go down an estimated 5 cents per $100.

Monn said the only jumps in tax bills would be due to higher EAVs, but final EAV numbers will not be available until spring.

Monn once again shared numbers with the board and public, including that the total proposed tax levy is $21.455 million, a 10.97 percent increase over the 2015 levy and 2016

extension. He went on to explain that taxes extended for bonds and interest payments are expected to increase from $5.379 million to $5.829 million, and the combined operating and debt taxes levied have an increase of 10.4 percent.

Monn said some reassessed home values in the area have gone up 5 percent, and for those taxpayers, the tax increases on their bill for the Minooka 201 portion would be anywhere from 3.95 percent to 5.64 percent. He said he has had some taxpayers tell him their assessed values jumped 10 percent, but some homes have not shown an increase. Monn wanted to make sure the taxpayers know the increase only has to do with the reassessed value of the home.

In November, Monn said that Minooka has seen new growth in homes and small business, as well as the large warehouse industry, which has contributed to the EAV increases in all relevant counties.

The next board meeting will take place at 7 p.m. Jan. 23 at the district boardroom, located at 305 W. Church St.

Property taxes for homeowners who live within the boundaries of Channahon School District 17 could see the lowest tax rate on the district’s portion of their tax bills since 2011, the district’s Chief School Business Official Mike Schroeder said.

School board members approved the district’s 2016 property tax levy of $17.59 million on Monday. Schroeder said that is $457,700 more than last year’s property tax extension, which calculates to a 2.7 percent increase this year.

The levy is based on equalized assessed valuation of property within the school district, which is estimated to total $647.43 million this year – a growth of 3.3 percent from the year prior.

That would put the district’s 2016 tax rate at 2.7174.

The owner of a home valued at $250,000 could see District 17’s portion of their property taxes this year drop an estimated $12.75 from the property tax of a $250,000 home last year.

Approval of the levy was unanimous.

Also Monday, the school board approved the purchase of the district’s science learning materials, as recommended by the Science Curriculum Committee.

Kindergarten through fifth-graders will be using the National Geographic Exploring Science printed books, which include earth, life and physical science books, and interactive e-books. The series also includes hands-on labs, teacher professional development and teacher edition books.

Adopted for students in sixth, seventh and eighth grades was the Discovery Education package, which includes e-books and programs, but no print books. The programs include videos and a simulator and are connected to Google Classroom.

Kavich, who led the committee, said the programs can serve as a supplement to the schools’ curricula or as a standalone one.

The total cost for both of the series is $63,823 for a six-year license.

The school board also gave an enthusiastic go-ahead for a big change in Channahon Junior High’s STEM Lab. Director of 21st Century Learning Jeremy McBrayer said eighth-graders will pilot a new direction for the lab during the last trimester of the school year that for now is being called “Dream Lab.” The program would replace the modular STEM Lab students currently do, with one McBrayer said boosts the principles of design thinking with the philosophy of, “No dream is too big.”

STEM lab teacher Kiley Sommers said the current modular lab is not as creative as it should be and “lacks discovery.”

“What we are hoping to do is to empower students to take charge of their learning – what they are passionate about,” Sommers told the board.

Students will use empathy to find a problem to fix, create and design a solution, improve it and then build it.

As an example, McBrayer showed a video of a student in another school who had problems with bullying. To address her concerns, she organized lunch groups that would let anyone sit with them who wanted to, then created an app called “Sit with Us,” which listed all of the open lunch groups in a school.

She was only 15 years old when she created the app, McBrayer said.

“We want to get kids passionate about their interests,” Superintendent Nick Henkle said of the new STEM Lab that he is calling a “STEAM Lab,” to also include art in the science, technology, engineering and math focus. “We also don’t want to underestimate our kids. ... These projects will use higher-order thinking skills.”

Channahon District 17 vote could result in lower tax rate

LOCAL BRIEFS Wisconsin man killed in I-55 truck crash

DuPAGE TOWNSHIP – A Wisconsin man was killed early Tuesday when two semitrailers collided on Interstate 55.

State police said the crash happened at 3:23 a.m. while the trucks were in the northbound lanes at milepost 267 just south of Route 53.

According to police reports, a semi driven by William A. Hansen, 60, of Oshkosh, struck the back of another truck driven by Samir Hraish, 36, of Wheaton.

Hansen was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:44 a.m., according to the Will County Coroner’s Office. Hraish’s condition was not available Tuesday morning.

State police said northbound lanes were closed in the early morning as a crash reconstruction team investigated the incident.

Romeoville man among 4 victims in Chicago slaying

CHICAGO – A Romeoville man was among four people found slain Saturday at a home in Chicago’s Fernwood neighborhood.

At 12:40 p.m. reported gunfire brought officers to a residence in the 100 block

of West 105th Street, according to police reports. Officers found two men and one woman dead inside the home from gunshot wounds and two women shot outside.

One of the women found outside – an 18-year-old woman – was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where she was listed in critical condition Tuesday. A 2-year-old child also was at the house, but was not injured, police said.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office identified the victims as Elijah Jackson, 36; Shacora Jackson, 40; and Nateyah Y. Hines, 19, who all lived at the address of the shooting, and Scott T. Thompson, 45, who lived in the zero block of Kempton Drive in Romeoville, according to the Medical Examiner’s Office.

Thompson, Hines and Elijah Jackson were killed by a gunshot wound to the head. Shacora Jackson died from multiple gunshot wounds.

No suspect information was available Tuesday. Chicago police said the reasons for the shooting are still under investigation.

Q. I came to stay with my “Aunt Rose” for a few weeks before Thanksgiving. She is eighty years old and is my mother’s sister. My mother and Aunt Rose’s brothers and sisters are deceased. Aunt Rose’s husband died a few years ago and they had no children. I now live in California. While visiting with Aunt Rose I have noticed some troubling things going on with one of my cousins that sort of takes care of Aunt Rose.

Some of the presents of jewelry I gave Aunt Rose over the years my cousin is now wearing. She said Aunt Rose gave it to her; Aunt Rose doesn’t remember giving the jewelry to her. When helping Aunt Rose organize her desk, I noticed that my cousin’s name is on Aunt Rose’s checking account. My Aunt Rose told me that my cousin “Sally” lives with her off and on and usually has “friends” move in with her, too. I saw phone bills that were $200 to $400 per month. Aunt Rose has four credit card accounts which have balances of over $15,000 each! Also, I saw all sorts of overdraft notices from the bank regarding her checking account. Whenever cousin “Sally” is in Aunt Rose’s home (which is frequently) Aunt Rose becomes very withdrawn and quiet. Aunt Rose now has a profound limp and will not tell me how she got hurt. Is there anything I can do to help Aunt Rose?

Under the Illinois Elder Abuse and Neglect Act our local area Agency on Aging, they will investigate your aunt’s situation.

If they report back to you that there is probable abuse, you may want to take the initiative to help your aunt and get an order of protection against your cousin “Sally” to prevent her from continuing to exploit your aunt. Right now, because of our huge state budget deficit, many of our local social service agencies are overburdened, underfunded and understaffed. You may have to take the initiative to assist your aunt. With report from our Area Agency on Aging, you may want to do one or more of the following: (1) Accompany your aunt to the Will County Courthouse and assist her in getting an order of protection against your cousin “Sally”. (2) Have your aunt see her attorney and have her appoint someone she trusts as her agent under a power of attorney and revoke any previous power of attorney----especially if your cousin is the named agent. (3) Petition the Court to appoint a guardian for your aunt is she is not competent to handle her affairs. The key thing here is to legally remove your cousin from handling your aunt’s business and personal affairs.

This may be time consuming and costly for you; but in the end your aunt, or Providence, or both, will thank you.

WHY DOES THE GOVERNOR WANT WORKERS’ COMPENSATION REFORM

AS PART OF THE BUDGET? A. Good question. The Constitution of the State mandates that the Governor make a budget, and workers’ compensation is actually a very separate matter which is governed by laws passed by the Illinois Legislature. Regardless of your politics, one thing our new President elect, Donald Trump, has said is that government should not forget the working man. That’s the person that made our country great in the first place. Our governor would be wiser if he listened to his party’s leader.

There were significant workers’ compensation reforms in 2011, some of which I have criticized. Regardless of the details, the National Council on Compensation Insurance, an Insurance Industries Rating Agency, said that employers should see a 12.9% cut in their workers’ compensation premium in 2017, the third largest in the Nation. The annual report by the Workers’ Compensation Research Institute, also funded by the insurance industry, confirms medical payments in the average case have fallen 15%, and are lower than Indiana, Wisconsin, and Iowa. Workers’ Compensation insurers have seen profits jump nearly 22 points between 2010 and 2014, and by

the end of that period nearly matched the national average. Because Illinois is attractive to workers’ compensation insurance companies, there are now 332 carriers writing workers’ compensation in Illinois, more than any other State. Whether they pass on their savings to the employers they insure, however, is quite another issue, but the fact is between 2011 and 2015 Illinois insurers reported a 19% decrease in benefit payments to injured workers.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics, Illinois ranked second among States where businesses are being created the fastest over the last year. With all the success from the 2011 amendments, one has to ask whether holding the Illinois budget hostage for workers’ compensation reform, contrary to the constitutional mandate, has motives which are less than pure. Workers who sacrifice their health for their employers shouldn’t be hurt twice, and the system we have is one of limited benefits (workers only get 2/3rd of their wage when they are off, meaning that they lose 1/3rd). Injured workers are extremely vulnerable. They have only the workers’ compensation system to rely on, and it is one that is not slowing business growth in Illinois. The problem has always been foreign competition, and that, unfortunately, is something neither our governor nor any of us can control on a local level.

LOCAL BRIEFS Joliet man gets 10 years for 2015 car robbery

JOLIET – A Joliet man was sentenced Monday to 10 years in prison for holding up a man in a parked car.

Antwon Jamison Jr., 24, agreed to plead guilty to a charge of aggravated robbery in relation to the July 28, 2015, stickup. Judge Dave Carlson said Jamison would have faced a minimum of 21 years in prison if he’d been found guilty of Antwon all charges in a trial that Jamison Jr. was scheduled for next month.

A 26-year-old man was sitting in a parked car in the 600 block of Wheeler Avenue when a man opened his passenger door, threatened him at gunpoint and took his money and cellphone, Joliet police said. The victim identified Jamison as the robber to investigators.

The following week, police officers were in a parking lot in the 900 block of Lois Place when Jamison and Kendall R.

Reed pulled up in a tan Toyota Camry, police said. A .40-caliber handgun and 10 baggies of marijuana were found in the backseat.

Reed served six months in jail before being released on probation, according to court records.

Jamison was sentenced to three years in prison after pleading guilty to unlawful use of a weapon and drug possession in a 2011 Joliet case, according to court records.

Amazon plans fulfillment centers in Aurora

AURORA – Online retailer Amazon.com plans to open new fulfillment centers in Aurora.

The announcement came Tuesday about the Seattle-based online retailer’s plans.

The company and Illinois officials said in a statement that Amazon plans to open two fulfillment centers in Aurora, and the project is expected to add more than 1,000 full-time jobs.

The company currently has Illinois fulfillment centers operating in Joliet, Romeoville and Edwardsville, with another fulfillment center under construction in Monee. During the past two years, Amazon has announced eight fulfillment centers in Illinois.

In Michigan, the company plans to hire at least 1,000 new employees to staff a new center in Livonia, it was announced Tuesday. That project is expected to cost about $90 million. The update came as the Michigan Strategic Fund approved a $7.5 million grant for Amazon.

The Illinois Department of Transportation has announced in a news release that a lane closure will take place for bridge deck repairs Wednesday on southbound Interstate 55 over the BNSF railroad tracks in unincorporated Will County near Channahon.

In order to repair a hole in the bridge deck, the structure that carries southbound I-55 over the railroad tracks will be reduced to one lane from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m. The bridge is located about 8 miles south of Interstate 80 and 4 miles south of Channahon.

A recommended alternate route for southbound I-55 traffic is to travel west on I-80 and south on Route 47 to rejoin with I-55 in Dwight. Illinois State Police will be patrolling the work zone for speeding, distracted driving and seat belt compliance.

Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area.

Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, and be on the alert for workers and equipment.

Georgene T. Bankroff (nee McCanna), age 87, late of Lockport passed away peacefully Tuesday, December 20, 2016.

Born in Lockport lifelong resident. Employed as a 7th and 8th grade Social Studies and Language Arts teacher at Kelvin Grove Grade School from 1967 until her retirement in 1992 after 25 years of service. A graduate of St. Francis College, Joliet, receiving her bachelor’s degree in 1967. Lifelong member of St. Dennis Church, Lockport, where she was a commentator and member of Altar and Rosary Society; past President of LAGHS, Lockport Area Genealogical and Historical Society, member of Delta Kappa Gamma, past President Tri County Credit Union. Den Mother of Cub Scouts Pack #53 and Girl Scouts Leader. Georgene loved to knit, crochet, was an avid reader, loved to travel with her husband and children. She was a devoted teacher where she touched and inspired many lives, but above all she was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Christine (Rodeghero) McCanna; beloved granddaughter, Colleen Smith; a brother, Thomas McCanna; two sisters, Shirley (James) Needham and Patricia Beller.

Survived by her devoted husband of 67 years, James H.; four children, K. Sue of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Timothy (Laurel) of Crown Point, IN., Scott of Lansing, MI. and Barry Bankroff of Lockport; four grandchildren, Melissa and Daniel Williams and Timothy (Antonia) and Taylor Bankroff; one great-granddaughter, Samantha Barnaby; sister-in-law, Serena McCanna and brother-in-law George Beller; numerous nephews, nieces, friends and St. Dennis Church family also survive.

NEW YORK – Dick Latessa, a veteran Broadway actor who was in the original productions of “Follies,” “Brighton Beach Memoirs” and “The Will Rogers Follies” and who won a Tony Award playing Harvey Fierstein’s onstage husband in the original cast of “Hairspray,” died Monday, Fierstein said. He was 87.

“This was a man who defined pro, with the timing of a Swiss watch and a voice, a smile and sweet soul that

made you feel special just to know him,” Fierstein wrote of his former co-star on Facebook. No other details on the death were immediately available.

Latessa, born in Cleveland, played Herr Schultz in the 1999 revival of “Cabaret,” and Dr. Dreyfuss in the 2010 revival of “Promises, Promises.”

Other credits on Broadway included “Broadway Bound,” “Awake and Sing!” and the 1994 revival of “Damn Yankees.” He was last on Broadway in “The Lyons” in 2012.

He won his best supporting actor

Tony in 2003 as the good-hearted dad in “Hairspray,” singing “You’re Timeless To Me” with Fierstein. When he won the Tony, he said: “Being up here is wonderful but the trip here was the best of all.”

His film roles included parts in “The Substance of Fire,” “Stigmata” and “Alfie” with Jude Law. On TV, he made appearances on “Six Degrees,” “The Black Donnellys,” “The Good Wife” and “Brotherhood.”

Tributes came from all over Broadway. Bernadette Peters said Latessa was “sweet extraordinarily talent-

ed” and “he shall be deeply missed.”

Michael McKean, who replaced Fierstein as Edna Turnblad, tweeted: “Dick Latessa was my man. He is irreplaceable.”

Latessa’s old role opposite the cross-dressing Fierstein in NBC’s “Hairspray: Live!” was taken by Martin Short in the recent telecast, but creators honored him with a store sign – “Crazy Dickie’s.”

“Oh, Dick, there was only one you and I’ll be forever grateful that I got you all to myself for nearly a thousand performances,” Fierstein wrote.

LONDON – Lionel Blue, Britain’s first openly gay rabbi who was known for his popular early morning radio spots, has died at 86.

The Liberal Judaism group said he died Monday. He was hospitalized with a chest infection and died of pneumonia.

He was a frequent guest on BBC radio’s “Thought for the Day” feature, part of the widely heard Radio 4 morning broadcast.

Blue was known for the light, genial tone of his radio spots, which often shed light on Judaism and its application in modern-day life. He frequently discussed his own failings and foibles.

He was often featured on the Monday morning spot that aired at around 7:50 a.m. and could be counted on to provide a measure of good

cheer and wit at the start of the work week.

Liberal Judaism’s Rabbi Charley Baginsky said Blue helped pave the way for gay clergy of many faiths.

“He leaves a legacy like few others,” Baginsky said. “As the first British rabbi publicly to come out as gay, in the 1970s, Lionel paved the way for many others, including clergy of all faiths.”

Rabbi Jonathan Romain said Blue had a unique way of mixing religious insights with honesty and humor.

“He never pretended that life was easy, or that religion solved everything; instead, he shared his own failings and foibles, and showed how to get through the rest of the day,” Romain said.

He cut back on his radio work after suffering numerous health problems, including heart disease and cancer.

‘In the midst of chaos,’ 3 remember deadly year

CHICAGO – In this deadly year of gun violence in Chicago, the tragic became the routine: Teens carried the caskets of friends down church steps. Sobbing mothers huddled at candlelight vigils, praying for an end to the shootings. Police unfurled more yellow tape to cordon off another murder scene.

The city recorded its first fatal gunshot victim just a few hours into 2016.

Month after month, the numbers mounted. More than 100 homicides in January and February. Around Labor Day, another milestone: 500 deaths. By mid-December, Chicago had recorded some 740 homicides.

Most were on the South and West sides. Most victims were young black men. But Chicago’s epidemic of gun violence – more than 3,400 shootings and about 4,200 victims in all – scars a much wider circle.

Illinois license plate renewal notices to continue for now

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Secretary of State’s Office will continue mailing out license plate renewal notices for now, even if Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and the Legislature’s Democratic leaders don’t reach a new budget deal.

The office plans to maintain the mailed notices next year, Dave Drucker, a spokesman for Secretary of State Jesse White’s office, told the Springfield Bureau of Lee Enterprises newspapers. But he said the office won’t be able to do so indefinitely without additional funding from a budget for the remainder of the state’s fiscal year, which runs through June.

The stopgap spending plan that’s funding most state agencies’ operations is set to expire Dec. 31.

Hatch prayed with Rev. Marshall Tolliver’s mother near her house. Later, he Hatch wrote a eulogy for her son. In the months ahead, he’d do the same for several other young gunshot victims.

Hatch, pastor of the New Mount Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church, says this year’s bloodshed has left him reeling.

“I’ve been at it 30 years and I don’t know that I can continue at this pace emotionally,” he says. “The only way I can really deal with it is see myself as an outsider. This is not my way of life.

It’s not my family’s way of life. It’s not the way of life of a lot of people that I know who are close to me. But I live in the neighborhood. ... I have to have some sense of detachment in order to serve.”

In the pressure cooker world of pediatric intensive care, Dr. Catherine Humikowski has seen the grievous damage bullets do when they rip into young brains and bodies.

The list is long, the wounds harrowing: A depressed, gaunt-faced 15-yearold, paralyzed from the shoulders down, tubes snaking through his stomach and windpipe. A 6-year-old girl shot in the stomach. New, former comptrollers have battle of words

SPRINGFIELD – A battle of words has broken out between Illinois’ former and current comptrollers after Democrat Susana Mendoza said her new offices felt “looted” and Republican predecessor Leslie Munger threatened a lawsuit.

Mendoza tells WLS-AM radio’s “Connected to Chicago” show in an interview that airs Sunday that when she took over for Munger this month, furniture had been removed, documents were missing and keys didn’t match locks. Mendoza defeated Munger in the November general election.

“There’s not a single piece of paper or paper clip left in any of the offices that have been vacated,” Mendoza said. “It did kind of feel like the place was looted.”

Ex-Ogle County sheriff pleads guilty in theft case

OREGON – A former northern Illinois county sheriff has pleaded guilty to charges he used thousands of dollars of government money for personal items.

The (Dixon) Telegraph reported that a Carroll County judge sentenced 55-yearold former Ogle County Sheriff Michael Harn on Monday to four years of probation and ordered him to immediately pay more than $10,000 in restitution to the county treasurer. Harn’s guilty plea to two counts of felony theft was part of a plea agreement.

Judge Val Gunnarsson told Harn that he “grossly violated” the public trust. Harn also must pay more than $2,300 in court costs and perform 384 hours of public service.

As a congressman, Danny Davis can debate the need for gun control from a public policy perspective.

But as a grandfather, he can’t make sense of the death of his 15-year-old grandson, Javon Wilson, who was shot last month at his South Side home in a fight over clothes and Danny Davis gym shoes. A 16-year-old boy and 17-year-old girl have been charged with murder.

Javon, he says, had been warned not to be out on the streets at night. “Of course, here he was at home,” Davis says. “The streets kind of came to him.”

At Javon’s funeral, Davis mourned his grandson, a basketball fanatic, a lover of blues and rap, a high school student just coming into his own. But the congressman looked beyond his family’s tragedy.

“Somehow with all the technology that we have, with all the know-how ... we have not had the will to stop the flow of guns through inner-city communities,” he told mourners. “You have to ask yourself, ‘How does a 15-year-old get a gun? Who will give it to him?’ ”

911 call played at trial of mom accused of murder

ROCKFORD – The eerie 911 call made by a woman accused of stabbing her 8-year-old son to death has been played at her bench trial.

The Rockford Register Star reported that Jody Kossow acknowledged killing her son during the call before also mentioning Satan. She’s pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder in the September 2013 slaying and waived her right to a jury trial.

Kossow didn’t show emotion Tuesday as the call was played during the trial’s first day. Kossow’s attorney said that psychiatric evaluations will show that Kossow was criminally insane when the child was killed.

However, prosecutors said Kossow understood what she was doing when she got a knife from the kitchen and used it to stab him.

Emergency managers charged over Flint water

FLINT, Mich. – A criminal investigation of Flint’s lead-contaminated water turned to former key officials at City Hall on Tuesday as Michigan’s attorney general announced charges against four people accused of keeping residents on a contaminated system that caused the crisis.

Trump family drops access offered for charity donations

WASHINGTON – Donald Trump’s children may see his move to the White House as a way to raise money for their favorite causes.

Two recent fundraising pitches featuring the incoming first family were meant to benefit charities, but they also raised questions among ethics experts that the Trumps might be inappropriately selling access.

Last week, Eric Trump tried auctioning a coffee date with his sister Ivanka to raise money for a children’s hospital. Now, Eric and Donald Trump Jr. are part of a venture that initially offered a private reception with their father during inauguration weekend in exchange for $1 million donations that would go to conservation charities. Some of those contributors could later go hunting or fishing with one or both of the sons, the invitation promised.

These events are dissolving as quickly as they become public, suggesting the family is learning on the fly what’s acceptable.

Trump aides say the Trump family has been focused on resolving the perception of conflicts when it comes to Trump’s business; how to handle their charitable endeavors has been a secondary concern. But in light of recent events, the Trump team is looking more quickly for solutions, said a Trump transition official, speaking on the condition of anonymity to share internal discussions.

Eric Trump canceled the coffee with Ivanka after The New York Times reported that some of

the bidders were doing so to gain insight about the Trump administration.

Hope Hicks, a Trump spokeswoman, said the hunting and fishing events reflected “initial concepts that have not been approved or pursued by the Trump family.” She added that the sons “are not involved in any capacity. Additionally, the president-elect is not aware of the event or the details pertaining to it.”

The two previous presidents, Barack Obama and George W. Bush, expressly forbade immediate family members from such fundraising activities to avoid the appearance of selling access.

“We kept it simple. We did not allow the first family to be auctioned off, which is what is happening here,” said Norman Eisen, who served as White House chief ethics counselor as Obama took office in 2009.

Richard Painter, who filled a similar role for Bush, said the White House “strongly discouraged” the president, his family and top aides from fundraising for charities, and avoided altogether charity fundraising that came with any access to those people.

Both said that while there’s nothing explicitly illegal about the charity fundraising, it diverges from the best practices of previous White House administrations.

In an invitation that began circulating last week when the entertainment site TMZ posted it, Eric and Donald Trump Jr. were listed as honorary co-chairmen for a group seeking up to $1 million donations for a Jan. 21 inauguration event dubbed “Opening Day.”

However, a gross profit of $77.11 – the retail cost of the ingredients is 11 cents – a pill is sordid, scandalous and unconscionable. My son, who is an emergency room doc, told me that Treximet has two active ingredients – naproxen and sumatriptan, both of which are popular generic drugs.

A single Treximet pill contains 500 milligrams of naproxen and 85 milligrams of sumatriptan. PTX even makes a lower-strength Treximet for pediatric patients. How sweet!

Naproxen is purchased quite cheaply over the counter at Walgreens or CVS, and sumatriptan is an inexpen-

sive prescription medication, retailing at $2 a pill.

According to clinical trials by GlaxoSmithKline, there’s zero evidence that Treximet suppresses a migraine better than a two-pill regimen of naproxen and sumatriptan.

Naproxen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug that treats pain or inflammation caused by arthritis, bursitis, gout, etc.

And sumatriptan is often used to relieve the intensity of migraine and cluster headaches. Though you might save a bundle using a two-pill regimen, my son would insist that I advise you to discuss this with your doctor before making a change.

XX, I’m sorry to inform you that you don’t have a $7,000 profit in PTX; rather, you have a loss of $400. In October, PTX was trading between 45 cents and 65 cents a share, and the board of directors decided to declare a 1-for-10-share reverse split. A reverse split is the opposite of a conventional stock split and results in a decrease in the number of shares outstanding.

For example, in 2009, Citigroup (C$60) was trading at an embarrassingly low $5 a share, so the board decided to

enact a 1-for-10 reverse split, lowering the number of shares outstanding by a factor of 10 while increasing the stock price by a factor of 10. A higher stock price always looks better to institutional investors, most of whom shy away from buying stocks trading at less than $5 a share.

Still, after the split, the total value of the company remains unchanged. So your 2,000 PTX shares, which cost you $1,000, became 200 shares, and seeing as they trade at $3, they’re worth $600.

PTX also produces and sells a dozen other drugs, none of which seems to excite the medical community. PTX sells its drugs through its sales force, third-party sales organizations and its subsidiaries.

The 274-employee company, headquartered in Morristown, New Jersey, has $30 million in cash, 8 million shares outstanding and a negative book value, and it expects to post a loss for 2017. Sell your shares and take your loss.

NRG Energy announces completion of Joliet coal-to-gas project

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – NRG Energy has completed the conversion of its Joliet Generating Station from coal to natural gas.

The New Jersey-based company this week announced the completion of four coal-to-gas projects in the United States, including Joliet.

The Joliet conversion was completed sometime this fall, NRG spokesman David Gaier said.

The station contains three units that produce 1,326 megawatts of power, enough to supply more than 1 million households, according to an NRG news release.

“It’s part of our fleet optimization strategy and part of our strategy to reduce our carbon footprint,” Gaier said.

The conversion of the Joliet plant, located at Route 6 and Larkin Avenue, and the closing of one of NRG’s two coal-powered units at its Will County Generating Station in Romeoville, were announced in August 2014.

The coal unit at the Romeoville station was shut down in 2015.

The changes have also led to the reduction of jobs at the two stations.

The Joliet workforce was reduced

from 151 to 56 because fewer workers are needed to run a gas-powered plant.

Thirty-seven Joliet employees moved to other jobs at NRG plants in Illinois, Gaier said.

The workforce at the Will County station was reduced from 116 to 70 with the closing of the one unit. NRG continues to operate one coal-powered unit in Romeoville.

The NRG announcement on Monday focused on the coal-to-gas projects’ contribution to company efforts to reduce carbon emissions.

“Driven by the economics of power generation, we modified units at four plants to switch from burning coal to natural gas, significantly reducing greenhouse gas and other emissions, while maintaining reliability in the system,” NRG Chief Executive Officer Maurico Gutierrez said in the news release.

The modified units at Joliet and the three other stations together generate more than 2,780 megawatts of power, or enough to supply more than 2 million average homes, according to the news release.

The other converted stations are in New Roads, Louisiana; Shawville, Pennsylvania; and New Castle, Pennsylvania.

USF men collect a season-high 105 points in nonconference win

cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – One of the qualities that Ryan Marks likes most about his University of St. Francis men’s basketball team is its resiliency.

The Saints demonstrated that over the last few days. After shooting a season-low 27.6 percent in a 63-54 home loss to Cardinal Stritch on Saturday, USF outlasted visiting Goshen, 93-91, in overtime on Sunday.

On Tuesday, the Saints completed the grind of three games in four days by taking on one of the top-scoring teams in Division III, Eureka College.

The Red Devils were not only averaging 91.5 points a game, but also had two of the top-10 scorers in their division to help them win seven of their first eight games, the program’s best start in over two decades.

But while Eureka fell just short of its scoring average, USF doubled its shooting percentage and nearly doubled its scoring output from Saturday’s contest as it posted a season-high points total by capturing a 105-90 nonconference victory at the Sullivan Center.

The Saints (8-5), ranked 19th in NAIA Division II, placed five players in double figures while limiting Eureka’s duo of Shea Feehan and Kendall Davis, who combined for a 55-point average, to just 41 points in a contest where USF grabbed a 57-44 halftime advantage.

“This was our third game in four days and we went from not being able to buy a bucket against Cardinal Stritch, to being more efficient offensively in the Goshen game and

As a team, we’ve been a little up and down, but I think we’re starting to find our identity with this group and definitely a sense of purpose on the offensive end.

“For us, Iain Morison is a guy who impacts the game in so many ways.

We didn’t have him in our first couple games and he’s really just now getting back to who he really is and our guys had to readjust to playing

with him back, so that’s been a good lift for us. This is a pretty resilient group. We’ve had a couple of tough losses, but they seem to respond to the challenge, has a desire to get better and there’s really a good camaraderie on the team.”

After scoring 90 or more points just once in its first nine games, on Nov. 27 in a 102-96 win over Briar Cliff, USF has now collected 90 or more points in three of its last four games.

JOLIET – Joliet Junior College’s fifth-ranked men’s basketball team used a 63-point first half to help it capture a 99-34 victory over Truman College at Wills Gym. The Wolves (13-2) made 37 of 63 shots (59 percent) as they took a 46-point halftime lead. They finished with 29 assists after collecting 33 last week against Robert Morris.

Leading the way for JJC was Clint Berhow, who scored 22 points and had six rebounds in 20 minutes.

“I really like our offensive flow and the approach our guys have,” Wolves coach Joe Kuhn said. “They really share the ball well and when you are shooting like we are we are very difficult to guard. On the other side of the ball, I think our defense is really improving. I liked our defensive positioning for a lot of the game and we took several charges as well.

I still think we can get even better on offense by eliminating several of our unforced turnovers.”

JJC is off until the Dec. 29 when it travels to Elgin to face the second-rated Spartans.

“Elgin is new to Division 3 this year,” Kuhn said. “We have a great stretch coming up in Division 3 basketball. We play Elgin, then Elgin plays Rock Valley and then we play Rock Valley. So we have three top-rated teams playing in the span of a week. Obviously we will have to continue where we have left off and then some.”

“Practices have been kind of rough for us lately so it’s good to finally see our hard work become fruitful,” Anderson said. “We’re finally rolling and hope to keep it going. Offensively we’re starting to work together as a team. I like our energy and defensively we’ve been picking it up, and that’s big for us. Our defensive effort carries over to the offensive end.

“If we can continue to stay energized and motivated with a sense of urgency throughout the game, then we can be a great team. I try to provide some type of spark and if I can’t do it offensively, I know that I can do it defensively. I like our brotherhood and us being able to hold each other accountable.

We’re all pretty coachable players and we don’t have ego problems. Everyone’s willing to learn and soak up coach’s knowledge and I like that.”

After starting off the season with a 1-3 mark, the Saints have now won seven of their last nine contests, with their only other loss during that stretch coming on Dec. 7 in an 85-73 defeat against Lewis University. USF is off until Dec. 29, when it meets Madonna to kick off the two-day Roosevelt University Classic.

“I think overall we just played as a team today and moved the ball well,” Raspopovich said. “Coach preaches to get the ball inside and work inside to out. The shooters were knocking down shots and everybody was making plays playing together and some guys off the bench gave us big minutes. We knew that they had two really big scorers who are both phenomenal players. They’re really good shooters, so we just tried to limit them as much as we could.

“This was the last game before break so we pretty much just wanted to stick together and push the ball in transition and try to get the ball moving and stop doing so much one-on-one. We have some big offensive threats inside and some shooters and drivers who can make plays happen so we kind of have a combination of everything and we have good chemistry.”

teams perform require great amounts of hard work in order to be executed well.

After watching the entire spectrum of high school sports during the past three decades, I have to say that the fans of cheerleading are definitely some of the very best. Many will sit through an entire competition and support not only their teams, but other schools, as well.

I’m a huge supporter of trying to incorporate as many different types of sports into the high school athletic program. I’ve covered them all through the years, so I appreciate the unique

nature of each, and more importantly, the value that all sports have to the student athlete.

Our area has been blessed with many outstanding programs, including several that were on hand for Sunday’s tournament. Schools such as Lockport, Lemont, Lincoln-Way East and Providence Catholic have been among the elite throughout the years and last season Joliet West joined that company by winning a large school championship.

Unlike a year ago when a large group of local teams competed in a sectional at Joliet West, the IHSA is

sending one group of area squads to a sectional at Andrew and a similar number to a sectional at Normal Community.

The local area has had at least one division champion in all but two years of the state finals. Can Joliet West join Lockport and Lincoln-Way East as the only programs to have repeated as champs in the large-school division?

It’s great to see athletes in this sport receiving recognition for all of their hard work. I’m looking forward to seeing which of our area teams emerges as this season’s best.

Sunday was one of those days where it would have been very easy to stay indoors to avoid dealing with the brutal cold weather.

But a few days earlier while at the mall shopping with my nephew, I saw Joliet West A.D. Steve Millsaps and told him that I’d stop by for the big event that his school was hosting.

That big event happened to be West’s Cheer Fest Invitational, a gathering of some of the top cheerleading teams in the northern half of the state.

And I’m glad that I attended the event.

Despite the frigid weather, I was expecting a large turnout and as I approached West on Glenwood Avenue, it was apparent that those interested in this event were not fazed by the weather, as the school’s lots were packed. It was a similar story in the fieldhouse, where nearly all the seating was taken up by the enthusiastic crowd.

I learned long ago just how supportive fans are at a big cheerleading competition. Nearly 20 years ago, I attended one of the Illinois Cheerleading Coaches Association state finals at Springfield’s Prairie Capitol Convention Center.

All levels of teams were there to compete and it could be argued that the large crowd there was perhaps as enthusiastic as any I’ve seen in a state finals competition.

But that was back in a time when many still thought that the main focus of the sport was to provide support at football and basketball games, much as it had been many years ago when I was in high school.

I was pleased when the IHSA announced that competitive cheerleading would get a state finals just like all of its other sports had.

That was in 2006 and Sandburg edged Lockport by a narrow margin to win the initial large school title. A friend of mine at the IHSA asked me to attend since the association feared that no reporters would show up to cover the historic event, and that basically was the case.

Much has happened since then with the acceptance of the sport. While cheerleading may not have been considered to be among the “big-time” sports at that time, it certainly has developed into an outstanding competition.

I challenge anyone who watches a major cheerleading tournament such as a big invitational, sectional or state finals, to not come away impressed by the athleticism. The routines that these

Uncertainty around Fuller about to end

Bears coach John Fox would not acknowledge any decision on Fuller, who has been on injured reserve but practicing for the past three weeks.

Wednesday afternoon is the deadline for the Bears to activate the 2014 firstround pick for the final two games of the season.

Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said Fuller is medically cleared from his knee injury, but not yet ready to play.

“Any time a guy’s hurt, there’s three stages to getting back to the field,” Fangio said. “One is you’ve got to get medical clearance. Two, the player’s got to say he’s ready to go and feels confident and he’s champing at the bit to go play.

And then the coaches get involved and see if he’s better than what the other choices are and if he really is back to being able to play. A has happened. B hasn’t, so C is a nonissue.”

Improving unreliable bench won’t be easy

jcowley@suntimes.com The dialogue is wide open between Bulls head coach and front office these days.

A brand-new frontier compared with the cold war that went on a few years ago.

Then again, as a player, a coach, and even when Fred Hoiberg was an assistant general manager with the Minnesota Timberwolves, open dialogue was never listed as one of his weaknesses.

“It goes both ways,” Hoiberg said of the line of communication when it comes to trying to improve the roster.

“You get together and talk about your roster. Ask questions from us and also from the front office. There is a constant dialogue. You’re always looking to do what’s best for your organization.”

That might have to come into play with this group if the Bulls want to take advantage of a mediocre Eastern Conference.

There’s the Cleveland Cavaliers at the top, Toronto shadowing them, and then everybody else. The win over the Detroit Pistons on Monday was just another reminder of how average life in the East really is.

The problem for the inconsistent Bulls is that the way they are constructed, mediocre might be their ceiling this season.

The bench just isn’t reliable right now.

On nights when Nikola Mirotic and Doug McDermott can be outside threats like they were in the Detroit win, all is well. Mirotic scored 13 points and was a plus-15 in the plus/minus category after a two-game benching. McDermott added 13 points and was a plus-17 in plus/ minus.

“We’re a different team when everybody is making shots,” Jimmy Butler said of his bench. “When they’ve got to guard everyone out there on the floor, there’s no match-up you can key in on.

doing what they do best, put the ball in the basket. We need them to keep shooting, taking and making shots with confidence.”

Hoiberg obviously had a similar observation coming out of that win, especially when he uses starter Dwyane Wade with that second unit to cause even more potential match-up problems.

“It opens up the floor for everybody, especially with that second unit with Dwyane getting into the paint and making plays,” Hoiberg said. “If he can do that with the floor space, he’s pretty darn good at making the right read.

That’s one of our better spread lineups when we get those guys out there together.”

Wade might even have more help coming, as Michael Carter-Williams (left wrist) is eyeing a return by the end of the week, adding perimeter defense to go along with Wade, Mirotic, McDermott and, right now, Cristiano Felicio in the middle.

But will that be enough, especial-

ly when it comes to how inconsistent Mirotic and McDermott can be? More importantly, is there even a move for the Bulls to make to strengthen that young bench? Likely not.

Mirotic can help a team, but expiring contracts haven’t been the gold standard in years, and the hope that the free agent-to-be can turn it around outweighs adding an unknown. Former first-round pick Bobby Portis is an option because he’s in and out of the rotation, but again the return on a player who is still developing hardly would change the balance of power in the conference.

That’s what the Bulls have to weigh the next six weeks. Is developing a young bench standing in the way of being a playoff team?

“You’re talking to 29 teams and seeing who is talking about different things,” Hoiberg said. “Sometimes things pop up with rosters. Sometimes they don’t.

“We’ll continue to keep those guys ready, and hopefully they’ll help us win some games and produce.”

NEW YORK – The Oakland Raiders lead the NFL with seven players selected for the Pro Bowl.

Quarterback Derek Carr, wide receiver Amari Cooper, center Rodney Hudson, defensive end Khalil Mack, safety Reggie Nelson, guard Kelechi Osemele and tackle Donald Penn were picked from the Raiders, who are in first place in the AFC West going into Week 16.

The Raiders had three players selected from their offensive line, a big reason the team has finally ended its long playoff drought.

“It means a lot. It’s a great honor to be recognized for what you do,” Hudson said. “It’s very humbling. I give a lot of thanks to our teammates because you can’t do any of it by yourself.”

Six members of the Atlanta Falcons were selected, most among NFC teams.

Outside linebacker Vic Beasley, kicker Matt Bryant, running back Devonta Freeman, wide receiver Julio Jones, center Alex Mack and quarterback Matt Ryan were chosen from the NFC South leaders.

Despite missing the first four games of the season because of his “Deflategate” suspension, New England quarterback Tom Brady was picked for the 12th time in his career. Cleveland tackle Joe Thomas and Arizona wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald were selected for the 10th time.

Twenty-six of the 32 teams had at least one player picked. Twenty players were chosen for the first time, including three rookies: Ezekiel Elliott and Dak Prescott from Dallas, and Kansas City’s Tyreek Hill.

Among the notable omissions was

Detroit quarterback Matthew Stafford.

The first-place Lions, who lead the NFC North at 9-5, did not have a single representative.

Carolina’s Cam Newton, last season’s NFL MVP, was not picked, either.

Other star quarterbacks left out were New Orleans’ Drew Brees and Indianapolis’ Andrew Luck.

After the Raiders and Falcons, the Cowboys, Steelers and Titans were next with five players selected each.

In addition to Prescott and Elliott, offensive linemen Travis Frederick, Zack Martin and Tyron Smith were picked from Dallas.

For the Steelers, running back Le’Veon Bell, wide receiver Antonio Brown, guard David DeCastro, center Maurkice Pouncey and quarterback Ben Roethlisberger were selected. Roethlisberger, Pouncey and Brown were all chosen for the fifth time.

For the surprising Titans, tied with Houston for first place in the AFC South, it’s their most players picked for the Pro Bowl since they had six in 2008.

Running back DeMarco Murray leads the group. He has 1,224 yards rushing, second in the NFL behind Elliott.

Left tackle Taylor Lewan earned his first Pro Bowl honor in his third season, while linebacker Brian Orakpo earned his fourth Pro Bowl trip overall and first since signing with Tennessee in March 2015. Tight end Delanie Walker and defensive lineman Jurrell Casey were both elected to start for the first time in their second career appearance.

The Pro Bowl will be played on Sunday, Jan. 29, in Orlando, Florida. The game will return to the NFC vs. AFC format after three years. Former stars Jerome Bettis, Tony Gonzalez, Ray Lewis and Charles Woodson will serve as “Legends Captains.”

Tom Kelly’s in New Lenox will make you want to stay awhile

By MYSTERY DINER Plenty of restaurants put up Christmas trees this time of year.

Tom Kelly’s in New Lenox is the only place I have seen to put that Christmas tree above the bar.

I guess you have to have a uniquely shaped building to pull off that feat, but it was definitely something I noticed soon after walking into the well-lit open room with the centerpiece of a huge bar and family-style tables around the exterior.

For starters, the building looks like a house, or maybe an office building/train station. And it’s open, bright and welcoming on the inside.

They’ve got a ton of unique beers on tap and, on one wall, a huge display case of taps that used to be used about a sign that reads “There are no strangers here, only friends you have not met.”

Opening up the menu, it didn’t take me long to decide what to order.

The beer menu, however, was more difficult.

I’ve had reubens. I’ve seen and eaten reuben rolls.

But I had never had a reuben burger. So I had to try that, with sweet potato fries.

As for the beer, I wasn’t ready to fully commit yet. So I tried the flight sampler with four 5.5-ounce choices.

The beer menu changes quickly and the Bent River Jingle Java was out, so I went in a different direction with Firestone Walker Luponic Distortion, Three Floyds Alpha King, Founders Backwoods Bastard and the Brickstone American Pale Ale. The Backwoods Bastard, a Scotch ale that’s been barrel-aged and pours brown with a bourbon aroma, was definitely the prize of that foursome, but I knew that going in and saved it for last along with my burger.

The burger was exactly what you would expect, given the name.

Essentially it was a reuben on top of a burger, and it was huge but also delicious.

I decided to take a knife and cut it into quarters, so I didn’t make too much of a fool out of myself trying to take a bite.

After finishing the first quarter, I decided I would also might look like a fool if I tried to eat the whole thing in one sitting.

So I went after half of it and downed the fries, which weren’t as over-sweetened as at a lot of places.

And I appreciated that.

One thing I can’t forget to mention was the service.

The bartender was there promptly and came back to check plenty during the meal.

I wasn’t always able to talk with my mouth full of reuben burger, but the attentiveness was much appreciated. She even noticed I was saving the Backwoods because, you know, I wanted to make sure to enjoy it. And the Alpha King, an American pale ale with caramel and citrus flavors, was enjoyable as well.

After boxing up my food, I was ready to hit the road until I was asked about dessert. About 98 percent of the time, I say “no thanks,” but, for some reason, when the turtle cheesecake was mentioned, I couldn’t say no.

So I ordered it and hung around to watch some more of the football game.

32 Mammogram advice continues to evolve Dear Doctor: Do I really need a yearly mammogram?

Dear Reader: This might be hard to accept, but if you’re a woman at low to average risk of breast cancer, you probably don’t need a yearly mammogram.

That’s not to say we shouldn’t give mammograms their due. Studies have found a decreased death rate from breast cancer among women who have had mammograms compared with those who didn’t.

Now let’s look at just how much benefit mammograms offer. The public health advocacy group the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force calculated if 10,000 women between the ages of 39 and 49 had regular mammograms for 10 years, it would prevent three breast cancer deaths. For the same number of women between the ages of 50 and 59, there would be eight fewer breast cancer deaths. And for women between 60 and 69, there would be 21 fewer breast cancer deaths.

In short, the overall death rates were not significantly different between those women who had mammograms and those who didn’t. This especially has been shown in studies in Canada and Sweden that compared the impact of annual mammograms with yearly breast exams from a health professional. In a 22-year Canadian study of 89,000 women, no difference in death rate was seen among women who had regular mammograms compared with those who had yearly breast exams with a health professional. This may point more to the importance of getting a yearly breast exam than the benefit of getting a mammogram.

Mammograms also have downsides.

A primary one is they have many false positives, leading to more imaging, breast biopsies and significant anxiety for patients.

Another is many breast cancers, such as ductal carcinoma in situ, would never be of clinical significance, so finding them on a

If you’re a woman who has a mother or a sister with breast cancer, or if you have the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutation that increases breast cancer risk, then a yearly mammogram after the age of 40 is a good idea. If you have a combination of risk factors – such as having had your first baby after the age of 30, having later-onset menopause or earlier-onset menstruation – then a mammogram likely is a good idea.

However, if you’re at average risk of breast cancer and between the ages of 40 and 49, there is only a small statistical benefit in having a mammogram. If you are between the ages of 50 and 69, the benefit of a mammogram may overcome risk. At that age, you should get a mammogram every two years.

If you’re older than 70, keep in mind breast cancer rates increase up to the age of 80, so the screening could have a benefit.

But that benefit must be weighed against the likelihood of dying from something else. Here again, the recommendation is for a mammogram every two years, but you should discuss your individual needs with your doctor.

Breast cancer screening still is evolving, with newer 3-D types of mammograms, breast MRIs and the possibility of biochemical markers to detect breast cancer. We’ll need studies of these technologies to assess their effectiveness at detecting breast cancer.

The recommendations may change yet again.

When I finally got around to writing him back, he mailed my letters back to me (unopened) and said I deserved to see how it felt to have letters go unanswered.

He has said he’s convinced he will die within five years because he’s nearing the ages when his parents died. I’m afraid after he passes on I’ll feel like I didn’t make enough of an effort.

How do I proceed with my relationship with my father? – Cautious In The South Dear Cautious: I don’t blame you for feeling anger at your father’s inability to parent you.

However, before advising you to write him off, I would need to know why he lashed out at you during your prison visit, even though hitting is unacceptable. I don’t think the way your father handled your ignoring his letters was bad or wrong. If his silence stung you, imagine how yours affected him.

Whether or not your father is dying is beside the point. I think on some level you know you have to treat him with more compassion, or you wouldn’t have written to me. I don’t know anyone who hasn’t made mistakes. Your father made a doozy. But you say your mother raised you right, and if that’s true it couldn’t hurt to treat him with some compassion.

East wins the first trick with the heart king, under which South drops the jack, let’s say. East returns the heart six, and declarer smoothly plays his queen. At this point, West will be tempted to take the trick, hoping that South started with only two hearts. But if West does win with his ace and return a heart, declarer takes the trick, runs the diamond queen and comes home with an overtrick.

If East had started with K-10-6-2 of hearts, he would have led back the two: low from three remaining cards.

When he actually played the six (high from an extant doubleton), West should realize that he must duck this trick to keep communication with his partner. Then, when East gets in with the diamond king, he leads his third heart, and the contract fails.
