mmallory@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Though much of the Plainfield Village Board meeting on Monday night was dedicated to the resignation of Trustee Jim Racich, the board still found time to get business done.

The board unanimously approved an ordinance that decreases the monthly water and sewer capital improvement charge on residents’ water bills from $7.50 to $7.

The idea to reduce the charge came out of recent village annual budget discussions. Trustee Garrett Peck noted that the decreased charge is something most residents will notice more than a cut in property taxes and he wanted to find a way to reduce costs for them.

rate decrease. But he added that though the village’s tax rate will stay the same, the average resident will likely see a tax increase of 4 percent because equalized assessed value in the village is expected to go up an average of 4 percent.

“Fifty cents a month is not going to erase that 4 percent increase,” O’Rourke said, asking the board to keep an open mind as they go through the rest of the budget process to see whether there are other cost savings to find for residents.

The board also approved a contract with firm Baxter and Woodman to provide on-call engineering services for the establishment of a 24-hour Federal Railroad Administration quiet zone along the Wisconsin Central Railroad in an amount not to exceed $12,000.

Racich resigns after 11 years on Plainfield Village Board

mmallory@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Plainfield Trustee Jim Racich has resigned from the Plainfield Village Board.

Plainfield Village President Mike Collins announced the news Monday night at the beginning of a village board meeting with a side-splitting faux proclamation that made “Feb. 30, Jim Racich from here until eternity, James D. Racich Day in the village of Plainfield.” Other trustees and village staff extended some jabs at Racich, known for his passion, wit and being a man of the people.

Racich, a trustee since 2005, is in the process of moving to Joliet. His term was set to end in April, but Collins said after the meeting that Racich wanted to move the process forward a few months. Racich

When Racich spoke, he referenced President John F. Kennedy’s famous quote, “ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.”

“I think that also goes for community,” Racich said, adding that elected officials should always ask themselves what they can do for their communities. “This has always been in my heart.”

Trustee Bill Lamb said he’d miss Racich’s enthusiasm for life and dedication to the village. Trustee Garrett Peck commended Racich for helping get Canadian National trains – that were blocking railroad crossings – out of the village.

“The bureaucrats at Canadian National were afraid to deal with you,” Peck said to Racich, joking that he hopes the village can still count on Racich for a quick conference call with Canadian National if the issue arises again.

Plainfield Director of Public Works Allen Persons said that with the decreased charge, the village anticipates having enough money to fund operations.

Trustee Brian Wojowski said he’d like to see the board follow this up in the future and continue it yearly.

Trustee Ed O’Rourke wondered if the ordinance was more appropriate after the annual budget has been finalized.

Village Administrator Brian Murphy said the reason the ordinance is coming forward now is that it was the direction of the board in a meeting two weeks ago. He said it’s also timely because February is typically when the village does rate adjustments, and getting the ordinance passed before then makes sense.

Trustee Brian Wojowski, a trustee since 2015, thanked Racich for his mentoring and friendship.

Plainfield Police Chief John Konopek and Plainfield Fire Protection District Deputy Chief Jon Stratton commended Racich for his support of emergency services throughout the years.

Konopek noted how Racich on many occasions has assisted other volunteers with the Plainfield Emergency Management Agency when emergencies occurred.

Joliet Boys and Girls Club, YMCAs offer winter activities

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Most kids have a two-week break beginning this month. Most of their parents don’t.

“We’re here. We’re open for the entire break,” said Boys and Girls Club of Joliet Executive Director Kahlil Diab, although the facility at 226 E. Clinton St. will be closed Dec. 25 and Jan. 1 because Christmas and New Year’s Day are on Sundays this year.

Children from ages 6 to 18 can join the club for $20 for the year. That includes the winter break programs, which have activities and two meals from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“The enrollment fee is not a big revenue source,” Diab noted. “We’re not going to turn away kids who want to do

this. If there’s an issue with the fee, they can go on ‘scholarship’ and vacuum or take care of the garbage.”

The club expects more than 100 Joliet-area children to be in attendance throughout winter break, but can accommodate more if necessary, Diab said.

Unlike when school’s in session, kids at the club don’t have to work on homework during the break, although reading activities still are offered, as are arts and crafts. The club also has a game room, a small computer lab and a movie theater. There’s also a gymnasium where kids can play basketball or perform with the dance and cheer team.

“It’s affordable. It’s safe. It’s warm,” Diab said. “This is where kids are surrounded by positive, caring adults.

Some kids don’t have that foundation

at home.”

Diab also mentioned winter clothing that has been donated to the Boys and Girls Club will be distributed to any kids who need it.

“Winter break is an important time for us. We do get the kids for more time than [the rest of the school year], but it’s nothing extra. It’s a part of what we do,” he said.

The Joliet YMCA facilities – the Jerald S. Galowich Family YMCA, 749

Houbolt Road, and the Arthur G. & Vera C. Smith Family YMCA, 1350 S. Briggs St. – also will host daily activities from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. The facilities will close at 1 p.m. Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, and will be closed all day Christmas and New Year’s Day. “We’ll have sports, arts, crafts and activities that teach social responsibility and team building at both locations,”

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The City Council’s willingness to fund the Rialto Square Theatre likely will be tested again Tuesday.

Councilman Pat Mudron said at the council meeting Monday that he will make a motion to provide the Rialto the $500,000 it seeks for 2017.

Mudron actually made the motion Monday, but it was not apparent whether anyone would second the motion, which would be necessary for the council to actually vote on the proposal.

While Mudron was waiting for a second, Coucilman Michael Turk, who has appeared willing to fund the Rialto, said he preferred to hold off on the vote for a day so he could talk with a couple of council members about the matter.

“Then I will withdraw the motion until tomorrow,” Mudron said.

The Rialto was the most discussed topic at a workshop meeting that precedes the council vote Tuesday on its 2017 budget, which does not now include Rialto funding.

Three council members and Mayor Bob O’Dekirk at a special meeting last week said they would vote against Rialto funding.

“Clearly our community is lacking in event venues, and the Rialto is a premier event venue,” Nicholas Macris said as he urged the council to fund the theater.

Tricia Simpson, president of the foundation board that raises money for the Rialto, told the council that the city would not be expected to cover the

nearly $600,000 in unpaid bills facing the theater now.

“That is not the responsibility of the council,” Simpson said. “It is the responsibility of the theater, and the foundation is helping on that.”

The council also heard from a couple of opponents to Rialto funding, including John Dillon, president of Local 440 of the American Federation of State,

County and Municipal Employees, which represents city workers.

“I’m all for the arts but not at the expense of running the city,” said Dillon, who added that the city is short-staffed and vehicles are breaking down.

On that note, City Manager Jim Hock told the council that the city will have to spend about $900,000 to replace more than 30 broken-down police vehicles, many of which were found to have rusted brake linings and were unsafe to drive.

“This is something that we absolutely need to do immediately,” Hock said.

The council Tuesday also will vote on a resolution to seek a change in state law to transfer ownership of the Rialto to the city, a proposal made earlier this month.

State Rep. Larry Walsh Jr., D-Elwood, was at the meeting and told the council the transfer faced challenges and was not likely to happen soon.

He also said that removing the Rialto from the Will County Metropolitan Exposition and Auditorium Authority, which is partially controlled by the governor, could forgo future state funding, which has provided $15 million in capital support for the Rialto.

“You’ve got a 90-year-old building,” Walsh said. “It’s going to take many dollars to keep that intact.”

Joliet Area Historical Museum plans auditorium remodeling

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The auditorium at the Joliet Area Historical Museum will reflect the “City of Steel and Stone” when a remodeling is done.

The museum auditorium will undergo a remodeling in the coming months, thanks to a $100,000 bequest from the late James Sczepaniak, a longtime Joliet Public Library board member and high school teacher also known for his passion for local history.

The plan is to make the auditorium a more suitable setting for the many events being held there, museum Executive Director Greg Peerbolte said.

“Right now, it looks like a basement, and we want it to look more like an auditorium,” Peerbolte said.

The steel-and-stone theme, reflecting Joliet’s history of steel mills and limestone quarries, will be presented in wall mountings, Peerbolte said.

The auditorium also will get new flooring.

The remodeling is expected to be done by the end of March.

The auditorium upgrade reflects its growing use, Peerbolte said. The space was used last week for a Christmas concert, and it will be in use for the museum’s Black History Month

programs in February.

Also, the museum is seeing growing demand for event rentals, including weddings and other parties. Peerbolte said the auditorium is an alternative indoor site when rooftop events have to be moved because of inclement weather. But the plain appearance of the auditorium today makes it less of an attraction for brides who plan weddings on the museum rooftop.

Peerbolte said some money from the Sczepaniak bequest also has been used for upgrades in the accounting system, so credit cards can be used at other spots than the front desk.

Sczepaniak, who died in November 2014, was known for his 35 years on the board of the Joliet Public Library, where he also served as president. He also taught social studies at Lockport Township High School and Romeoville High School.

Sczepaniak also was a member of the Joliet Area Historical Museum.

“I always saw him here,” Peerbolte said. “He was very passionate about Joliet history.”

No injuries in garage fire

aschier@shawmedia.com SHOREWOOD – A fire that damaged a car and garage caused $75,000 in damage Monday morning.

The Troy Fire Protection District responded at 7:17 a.m. to the 21400 block of Baytree Court in Shorewood, where firefighters saw smoke and fire coming from the garage, according to a district news release.

Crews contained the fire to the car and garage, but smoke damaged the living area of the house, the news release stated. The fire was brought under control at 7:36 a.m.

Doyle said the cause of the fire was determined to be hot ashes from a fireplace that had been put in a bag and then discarded in a trash can in the garage. The trash can caught fire, setting the car and garage ablaze.

Doyle reminds residents that ashes should be stored outdoors in a metal container with a metal lid, and kept 4 to 5 feet from flammable materials.

Agencies from Minooka, Channahon and Plainfield assisted Troy firefighters in their response, according to the news release.

The HERALD–NEWS Monday was the last day for candidates running to represent municipal and school district governments in the April 4, 2017, election to file petitions in communities throughout the Joliet area.

The listing below details who filed to run for what positions.

JOLIET

PLAINFIELD

It appears Plainfield Village President Mike Collins will run unopposed in the April election. Collins has been in the role since 2009. Former Plainfield Park District Executive Director Greg Bott pulled petitions for village president, but Village Clerk Michelle Gibas stated in an email Monday that no one else filed to run for the position.

Filing for trustee on the first day were incumbent Trustees Margie Bonuchi and Garrett Peck. Since then, Larry Newton – a current member of

the Plainfield Township Park District board – has filed. The term of Trustee Jim Racich, who resigned Monday, is also up in April.

SHOREWOOD

Incumbent Richard “Rick” Chapman filed to run for village president.

Current Village Trustee Barbara “Cookie” Kirkland also filed for president. Her trustee term expires in 2019.

There are four trustee spots open in the April election. Incumbent Trustees Dan Anderson and Daniel Warren filed for re-election. Lona Jakaitis and Clarence DeBold also filed.

CREST HILL

On the first day of filing, current Mayor Raymond R. Soliman submitted petitions to run for mayor, as did Alderman John S. Vershay. Since then, former Mayor Nicholas “Nick” Churnovic has also filed for mayor.

Seeking re-election are City Clerk Vicki Hackney, City Treasurer Glen Conklin, Ward 1 Alderman Scott Dyke, Ward 2 Alderman Barbara Sklare and Ward 4 Alderman Charles Convery. Marco Coladipietro is running for Ward 3 alderman and Nathaniel “Nate” Albert is running for Ward 4 alderman.

LOCKPORT

Incumbent Mayor Steven Streit and incumbent Ward 3 Alderman Darren Deskin both filed for re-election by noon Dec. 12.

Also early Dec. 12, Catherine Perretta filed petitions to run for 4th Ward alderwoman and Christina Bergbower filed petitions to run for 2nd Ward alderwoman.

The Lockport City Clerk’s Office did not immediately provide a requested updated candidate filing list Monday afternoon.

NEW LENOX

Four of six village trustee seats are up for election in New Lenox. Incumbents Annette Bowden, David Smith and Douglas Finnegan filed for re-election. Jasen Howard also filed to run for trustee.

There will be a lottery between Bowden and Smith to determine who gets the first spot on the ballot.

CHANNAHON

Channahon Village Board incumbents Chantal Host, Mark Scaggs and Sam Greco, and non-incumbent Steve Czyz all filed petitions simultaneously

Fifteen candidates have filed to be on the ballot for three openings on the Joliet City Council.

Among those filing Monday were R. Dale Evans, a member of the Joliet Township High School board, and Roger Powell, a commissioner at the Housing Authority of Joliet.

Others filing Monday were Alex Rodriguez, Larry Crawford and Michelle Stiff.

Marc P. Ragusa filed his petitions Dec. 13.

On the first day of filing, Dec. 12, petitions were filed at 8 a.m. by Brooke Hernandez Brewer, Don “Duck” Dickinson, Jan Quillman, Nathaniel C. Romeo, Michael F. Turk, Rachel F. Ventura and Betty J. Washington. They will all be in a lottery to determine first spot on the ballot.

Also filing Dec. 12 were Diane M. Harris and Christian Egwunwoke.

They filed later in the day, so they will not be in the lottery for first position.

There will be no lottery for last spot on the ballot. Evans was the only candidate to file after 4 p.m. Monday. If any other candidates had filed before the clerk’s office closed at 5 p.m., there also would have been a lottery for last position.

The council openings are for the three at-large seats, which represent the entire city. The council also has five district council members, who are not up for election in April. All three incumbents – Brewer, Quillman and Turk – are running.

Grinch Week at N.B. Galloway School opens students’ hearts

Shaw Media correspondent CHANNAHON – N.B. Galloway School in Channahon teaches its students character education all year long.

The kindergarten-through-second-grade elementary school makes sure its young students learn all about the meaning of responsibility, respectfulness and honesty, among other traits.

Its staff even found a way to include the Grinch in their lessons this month, with Grinch Week, and that lesson was kindness. Throughout the week, social worker Danielle Santor spoke with the different classes about lessons the furry green creature from the 1966 animated television short, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” can teach them.

“Danielle is talking to students about unwavering kindness,” Principal Mary Kelly said, “and using the Grinch story as a way to show that even when things look bad, you can still be kind. And sometimes, your kindness can change someone’s life.”

In the cartoon, the Grinch thinks he can steal Christmas from the residents of Whoville by taking their gifts, decorations and holiday food. He learns that

place Dec. 12 to 16, students wore red for kindness on Monday, received “brag tags” and did classroom Grinch activities on Tuesday, and had an ugly sweater day on Wednesday. Throughout the week, they wrote kind things they could do for people on paper hearts, then stuck the hearts on Grinch posters.

“The staff really have embraced Grinch Week,” Kelly said. “At first, I think some people were a little leery, since the Grinch isn’t really a friendly fellow. However, I think everyone is in full Grinch spirit this week. We even ordered staff T-shirts to celebrate.”

The culminating event of the week was Friday’s assembly, held in the cafeteria, which had been transformed into Whoville. Students and staff came in their pajamas or dressed like a Who. The Grinch was there also, being a little naughty at times.

At the assembly, students were chosen from each grade level to play reindeer games designed to grow the Grinch’s heart.

Kindergartners went through an ornament-hanging obstacle course; first-graders made snowmen of fellow students; and second-graders returned the presents the Grinch had stolen back to their Christmas trees.

Steve was an avid sports fan of the Chicago Cubs (Did you know they are the 2016 World Series Champions?), Chicago Blackhawks, New England Patriots, and Michigan Wolverines (Go Blue!). He loved taking trips to Michigan, and exploring the lighthouses along the lake. Steve will always be remembered for his special sense of humor, his beautiful blue eyes, and most of all his unconditional love for his family and friends. He touched the lives of everyone he met.

Henry Heimlich, life-saving maneuver creator, dies at 96

CINCINNATI – The surgeon who created the life-saving Heimlich maneuver for choking victims died Saturday in Cincinnati. Dr. Henry Heimlich was 96. His son, Phil, said he died at Christ Hospital after suffering a heart attack earlier in the week.

“My father was a great man who saved many lives,” said Heimlich, an attorney and former Hamilton County commissioner. “He will be missed not

only by his family, but by all of humanity.”

Heimlich was director of surgery at Jewish Hospital in Cincinnati in 1974 when he devised the treatment for choking victims that made his name a household word.

Rescuers using the procedure abruptly squeeze a victim’s abdomen, pushing in and above the navel with the fist to create a flow of air from the lungs.

That flow of air then can push objects out of the windpipe and prevent suffocation.

In lieu of flowers, gifts in Steven’s memory to his family would be appreciated.

Illinois electors cast 20 votes for Clinton

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois members of the Electoral College cast their ballots on Monday for Hillary Clinton, who won the Prairie State but lost the election to Donald Trump.

D e m o n s t r a t o r s w a g e d a n a nti-Trump protest as they did in many states around the country and one elector called for an investigation into alleged foreign meddling in the American ballot box.

Democrat Clinton claimed all 20 of Illinois’ electoral votes, reflecting her 945,000-vote victory over Republican Trump. The three-dozen protesters chanting and holding a large “Stop Trump” banner in the state Capitol rotunda had only a symbolic reason to be there.

Afterward, electors offered differing views on whether the Electoral College, which makes the presidential election not a national referendum but the culmination of 50 state contests, should be preserved.

That resulted last month in Clinton outpolling Trump by 2.9 million votes but the New York City businessman winning enough states to clear the 270 electoral votes necessary to become president. In 2000, Al Gore won a 540,000-vote plurality but lost to eventual President George W.

Local officials in Irkutsk went house-to-house in search for more victims and introduced a state of emergency Monday, while the Russian government called for tighter regulation of the alcohol market. The sale of lotions and tinctures containing alcohol has risen in recent years as Russia has plunged into recession under the impact of Western sanctions and a slide in oil prices.

Poisonings caused by cheap surrogate alcohol are a regular occurrence, but the Irkutsk case was unprecedented in its scale.

Stronger dollar could hinder Trump’s plans

WASHINGTON – President-elect Donald Trump’s ambitious plans to revive exports, return jobs to the U.S. and increase oil drilling are running up against a home-grown threat: The surging U.S. dollar.

Since the Nov. 8 election, the dollar has shot up 5 percent. An index that tracks the dollar against other major currencies reached a 14year high after the election before dipping a bit since then.

In part, the dollar’s gain reflects the U.S. economy’s strength and investor confidence that Trump will accelerate growth by slashing taxes and pumping money into roads, bridges and other infrastructure. The dollar could rise even more now that the Federal Reserve has raised interest rates and foresees three more hikes next year. With rates far lower elsewhere in the world, many investors will shift money to the United States to capitalize on higher yields – a shift that could send the dollar even higher.

Which creates a problem: An expensive dollar makes U.S. goods costlier overseas – and imports cheaper in the U.S. That’s a recipe for more pain for American manufacturers. A high dollar can also lead some U.S. multinational companies to move operations to countries where their dollars go further.

And a high-priced dollar tends to shrink oil prices, thereby discouraging the increased energy production that Trump has made a center-

piece of his economic plans.

“A strong dollar will make it more challenging to boost the international competitiveness of U.S. manufacturing, bring back jobs and increase exports,” said Eswar Prasad, professor of trade policy at Cornell University.

Even before the election, a comparatively strong dollar had slowed U.S. exports for much of the past two years. Exports of goods and services had peaked in October 2014 at $200 billion. The figure fell to $179 billion in March before recovering slightly as the dollar weakened. But then the dollar marched back up and accelerated after Trump’s victory. It was no surprise when U.S. exports fell nearly 2 percent in October, according to the Commerce Department.

Consider what the strong dollar does to U.S. corporate earnings, too: Whatever revenue American companies earn in foreign currencies is worth less once it’s exchanged into U.S. dollars and returned home. In recent weeks, American companies, from Whirlpool to Apple, have complained that the strong dollar has dented their earnings.

At Vaughn Manufacturing Co. in Nashville, Tennessee, the company president, Mark Vaughn, is fretting about the dollar’s 11 percent rise against Mexico’s peso since the election.

Around 20 percent of Vaughn’s tool-and-die business is done in Mexico. And the company competes with Chinese and Korean companies that aren’t saddled with an expensive currency.

“It’s a concern,” he said.

ANKARA, Turkey – A Turkish police officer fatally shot Russia’s ambassador to Turkey on Monday in front of a shocked gathering at a photo exhibit and then, pacing near the body of his victim, appeared to condemn Russia’s military role in Syria, shouting: “Don’t forget Aleppo! Don’t forget Syria!”

The leaders of Turkey and Russia said the attack in Ankara, the Turkish capital, was an attempt to disrupt efforts to repair ties between their countries, which have backed opposing sides in the Syrian civil war.

shots, at one point walking around Ambassador Andrei Karlov as he lay motionless and shooting him again at close range.

The assailant, who was identified as Mevlut Mert Altintas, a 22-year-old member of Ankara’s riot police squad, was later killed in a shootout with police. Three other people were wounded in the attack, authorities said.

The assassination came after days of protests by Turks angry over Russia’s support for President Bashar Assad in the Syrian conflict and Russia’s role in the bombardment and destruction of Aleppo, Syria’s largest city.

The gunman shouted about Aleppo in Turkish, and also yelled “Allahu akbar,” the Arabic phrase for “God is great,” continuing in Arabic: “We are the descendants of those who supported the

Prophet Muhammad, for jihad.”

The attack, condemned by the White House and the United Nations, was another sign of how Turkey, a NATO member and a partner in the U.S.-led campaign against the Islamic State group, is struggling to contain multiple security threats. The war in Syria has been a major problem for years, sending several million refugees into Turkey and, more recently, drawing in Turkish troops.

Turkey has become accustomed to deadly attacks – Kurdish militants claimed responsibility for Dec. 10 bombings in Istanbul that killed 44 people, many of them police.

The spectacle of 62-year-old Karlov’s assassination by a member of the Turkish security forces at a photography exhibit meant to highlight Russian culture reinforced the sense of unease over the

region’s conflict and complex web of alliances and relationships. It came a day before a key meeting about Syria to be held in Moscow. Those attending include the foreign and defense ministers from Turkey, an opponent of Assad, and Russia and Iran, backers of the Syrian regime.

Russian President Vladimir Putin described the killing of Karlov as an attempt to damage Russia-Turkey ties “and to thwart a peace process in Syria which Russia, Turkey and Iran have been actively trying to promote.”

Putin said he and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan agreed in a phone call that Russian investigators would fly to Ankara to conduct a joint probe with their Turkish counterparts.

“We must know who was directing the killer,” Putin said in televised remarks.

WASHINGTON – There were many protesters but few faithless electors as Donald Trump won the Electoral College vote Monday – ensuring he will become America’s 45th president.

An effort by anti-Trump forces to persuade Republican electors to abandon the president-elect came to practically nothing and the process unfolded largely according to its traditions.

Trump’s polarizing victory Nov. 8 and the fact Democrat Hillary Clinton had won the national popular vote had stirred an intense lobbying effort, but to no avail.

“We did it!” Trump tweeted Monday evening. “Thank you to all of my great supporters, we just officially won the election [despite all of the distorted and inaccurate media].”

He later issued a statement saying: “With this historic step we can look forward to the bright future ahead. I will work hard to unite our country and be the President of all Americans.”

Even one of Trump’s fiercest Republican rivals, Ohio Gov. John Kasich, said it was time to get behind the president-elect.

“We want unity, we want love,” Kasich said as Ohio’s electors voted to back Trump at a statehouse ceremony.

Kasich refused to endorse or even vote for Trump in the election.

With all states voting, Trump finished with 304 votes and Clinton had 227. It takes 270 Electoral College votes to win the presidency. Texas put Trump over the top, despite two Republican electors casting protest votes.

In Baton Rouge, Louisiana, elector Charlie Buckels reached out to Trump’s opponents after the New York businessman got all of the state’s eight votes.

“For those of you who wished it had gone another way, I thank you for being here,” said Buckels, the state GOP finance chairman. “I thank you for your passion for our country.”

There is no constitutional provision or federal law that requires electors to vote for the candidate who won their state – although some states require their electors to vote for the winning candidate.

Those laws, however, are rarely tested. More than 99 percent of electors through U.S. history have voted for the candidate who won their state. Of those who refused, none has ever been prosecuted, according to the National Archives.

CHAMBER LETTER

A letter addressing the Rialto Square Theatre Peace, joy, and happiness are often words associated with the holiday season. As we await celebrations this year, our gatherings are sure to have one thing in common … the Rialto Square Theatre.

Recent discussions have led many to believe that our 90-year-old “Jewel” of Joliet and “Palace for the People” may soon feature permanent locked doors and no more flashing light bulbs.

An action like this certainly cannot bring joy and happiness to anyone, regardless of which side of the discussion you fall on.

Unfortunately, peace between the Will County Metropolitan Exposition & Auditorium Authority (Rialto Board) and the Joliet City Council certainly seems like a glimmering light in the distance. Fortunately, we believe that all sides can at least agree on one thing: THE RIALTO SQUARE THEATRE MUST STAY OPEN! About 10 months ago, this Chamber wrote a letter addressed to the governor of Illinois, majority and minority leaders of both the Illinois Senate and House, and local Democrat and Republican elected officials to share our view concerning their lack of action regarding our Illinois state budget.

Our intention is for this letter to serve much the same purpose. We are not going to point fingers and say which side is right and which is wrong and won’t even go as far as to make suggestions on how a solution can come about.

What we do intend to voice our opinion on is the need for both sides to come together (as often as possible) and continue discussions on ways to make this situation a positive one, one that sees a theater that once faced demise rise once again as a cultural force in a city that once was down on its luck as well, but fought back to what it is today – a city that features numerous cultural, entertainment, economic, education, recreation, historic, and worship opportunities.

A collection of hardworking, proud, and knowledgeable citizens!

None of us however should take pride in the fate of the Rialto Square Theatre closing.

THE FIRST

AMENDMENT

We have a downtown plan in place that revolves around the Rialto as the centerpiece of revitalization.

That plan includes finally reopening Chicago Street and turning the corridor into a true entertainment district. We have a plan that includes demolishing a building right across from the Rialto and building a beautiful open town square park.

Recent years have brought major investments from both individuals and institutions, such as Joliet Junior College, the University of St. Francis, and county government. These investments all bring positive images.

The same downtown plan listed the following as the most significant weakness, “the negative perception of the downtown within the community, and beyond.” Closure of the Rialto is a major negative image that may not ever be overcome.

Let’s all find a way to support a structure that drives people from near and far. We have an extremely recognizable facility listed on the National Register of Historic Places, one that is known throughout the country. Many have taken huge risks by opening their businesses and offices in downtown Joliet.

We’re on the verge of seeing a new restaurant, apartments, transportation center, courthouse, and a first ever brewery in downtown Joliet.

Many jobs that help pay taxes and support families rely on having the Rialto open. Many future endeavors will rely upon a thriving Rialto.

Do all involved really want to be known as the leaders that let the Rialto close? Do we in the community want to be known as the generation that allowed this to happen?

Our answer is no, let’s be the present-day Dorothy Mavrich and Christo Dragatsis instead and find a solution to ensure our “Palace for the People” and “Jewel” of Joliet remains open.

Lewis uses big third quarter to beat Wayne State, improves to 10-2

cherron@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – A team certainly can be forgiven if it’s a little flat after being off for a week, having just come off final exams and looking forward to some time away from the court.

Such was the story for Lewis University’s women’s basketball team when it hosted Wayne State on Monday in a matinée contest at Neil Carey Arena.

The upstart Warriors sensed opportunity in the opening half and capitalized on some accurate outside shooting to help them pull to within 38-37 at halftime.

But Lewis came to life in the third quarter, outscoring Wayne State by a 24-4 margin and limiting them to just 21 points in the final half to help the Flyers capture a 75-58 victory to improve to 10-2 on the season.

The Flyer run extended into the final quarter and the 26-4 spurt, which was capped by a 17-0 outburst, turned a one-point lead into a 64-41 cushion.

In the third quarter, Lewis hit 9-of-11 shots (81.8 percent) while Wayne State made good on just 2-of-20 attempts (10 percent).

“You have to give our players credit,” Flyers coach Kristen Gillespie said. “This is the get-away game and everyone’s bags are packed and they get a week off. They made some tough shots, but we stayed with it and came out in the second half with a renewed sense of energy. We just got done with exams and there’s a bunch of excuses, but Wayne State came in 4-6 and four of their losses were one-possession games, so we knew that they’d be good.

Bowlers learn postseason assignments SUBMITTED REPORTS

Area bowlers now know who they’ll compete against and on which lanes they’ll do so after the IHSA announced postseason assignments for both boys and girls bowling.

All of the area boys teams will be in the Plainfield North Sectional, which will take place at Echo Lanes in Morris on Jan. 21.

But before they can get there, they must advance from three of the four regionals that feed into it one week earlier.

The Oswego East Regional at Aurora’s Parkside Lanes includes Bolingbrook, Lemont, Lockport, Plainfield Central, Plainfield East, Plainfield North, Plainfield South and Romeoville.

Minooka hosts a regional at Channahon Lanes that includes Joliet Central, Joliet West, Lincoln-Way Central, Lincoln-Way West and Providence Catholic. The other local team is Lincoln-Way East, which will be in the Bremen Regional at Tinley Park’s Centennial Lanes.

For the girls, area teams also will

be entered in three regionals, but two of those are in one sectional, while the other will compete in a different sectional.

The Minooka Regional and the Plainfield South Regional, which take place Feb. 4 at Town and Country Lanes, both feed into the Andrew Sectional at Orland Bowl in Orland Park, which takes place one week after the regionals.

Plainfield South’s Regional includes Bolingbrook, Joliet West, Lemont, Lockport, Plainfield Central, Plainfield East, Plainfield North and

Romeoville while the Minooka Regional at Town and Country Lanes includes Joliet Central, Lincoln-Way Central, Lincoln-Way East and Lincoln-Way West.

There is also a to-be-determined regional that feeds into the LaSalle-Peru Sectional at Peru’s Illinois Valley Super Bowl, which includes Morris and Peotone.

The IHSA boys finals are the weekend of Jan. 27-28 at O’Fallon’s St. Clair Bowl, and the IHSA girls finals are set for the weekend of Feb. 17-18 at The Cherry Bowl in Rockford.

up. Coming out of half we knew that they were hot, so we just made sure that we talked a lot on defense and that was a big emphasis.

“We needed a great end to take us into the break. We’ve worked hard for how many months, so now to end it like this and have a week break was

awesome, and I’m proud of our girls for staying mentally focused. I really like our leadership. I love how we have a lot of older girls who take responsibility and make you feel welcomed and want to be a part of the team. I love these girls since they’re fun and it’s just a great atmosphere to play with them.”

Area boys basketball fans who were wondering who would go where in the postseason found out on Monday that all of the area’s largest schools will be in the same sectional.

Lincoln-Way East will host a Class 4A sectional that features Bolingbrook, Joliet Central, Joliet West, Lemont, Lockport, Minooka, Lincoln-Way Central, Lincoln-Way West, Plainfield Central, Plainfield East, Plainfield North, Plainfield South and Romeoville.

Other schools that are in the sectional in Frankfort are Andrew, East Aurora, Neuqua Valley, Oswego, Oswego East, Sandburg, West Aurora and Yorkville.

The 22 teams will be split into regionals at Joliet Central, Plainfield Central, Plainfield North and Sandburg. The winner of the Lincoln-Way East Sectional will meet the Hinsdale Central Sectional champion at the Northern Illinois University Super-Sectional in DeKalb.

There are four boys teams in Class 3A and they all will be in the Plano Sectional, which meets the winner of the St. Rita Sectional in the Joliet Central Super-Sectional.

Joliet Catholic Academy and Providence Catholic are in one sub-sectional with Agricultural Science, Hillcrest, Oak Forest, Rich Central, Rich East, Rich South, Thornridge and Tinley Park. The regional sites are JCA and Rich South.

Coal City and Morris will compete against Herscher, Kankakee, Manteno, Plano, Pontiac, Prairie Central, Sandwich and Streator in the other sub-sectional. Regionals will be held at Coal City and Kankakee.

There also are four squads in Class 2A who will competing in the Seneca Sectional.

The four Class 3A teams, Coal City, Joliet Catholic, Morris and Providence, will be in a sub-sectional of the Hillcrest Sectional. They will be joined by Herscher, Kankakee, Manteno, Rich Central, Rich East, Rich South and Tinley Park. Kankakee and Providence will host regionals. That sectional champ meets the De La Salle winner in a site to be determined.

In Class 2A, Peotone is in a sub-sectional of the Lisle Sectional while Reed-Custer, Seneca and Wilmington are in a sub-sectional of the Princeton Sectional, whose winner meets the Rockridge Sectional champion at a site that is still to be determined. And Gardner-South Wilmington will host a regional in a sub-sectional of the Class 1A Lexington Sectional.

USF women proud of historic No. 1 ranking

kjasnica@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The University of St. Francis women’s basketball team has seen a lot in the past few years.

Four years ago, the Saints earned eight victories the entire year. But now, St. Francis is off to its hottest start in program history.

USF is one of three teams in NAIA Division II that remain undefeated with an 11-0 record and 6-0 mark in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference. The Saints are No. 1 in the nation for the first time in their history. And for the first time, they’re the team to beat.

“I’ve been here since my freshman year and things have definitely turned around,” senior guard Angelica Osusky said. “We were the underdogs my freshman year. We were the ones getting beat up by teams, but now we’re the ones doing the beating.”

“Coach told us that now that we’ve embraced the fact that we’re ranked No. 1 and we’ve made it by being recognized, we’re going to need to accept this target,” senior guard Charnelle Reed said. “A lot of teams see it and they want to be the first team to beat us and knock us off. We realize that we’re our own competition. No one can beat us but ourselves. The underdog label isn’t there anymore, so we need to play to our full potential every game.”

Anyone can see that St. Francis has improved by leaps and bounds in these past four years. The Saints improved from a 8-23 to a 17-15 record and last season, they boasted an impressive 28-5 showing and earned a trip to nationals.

The strong start and No. 1 ranking are just signs that all of the years of hard work in the program is paying off.

The improvement was obvious, but what people can’t see is how hard the players worked each season to progress. From the big-point scorer to the players on the bench, each player bought into what the coaching staff preached and saw improvement day-by-day as a team.

Coaching the basketball aspect is only one part of becoming a strong team, however. They have to have the right mentality and support system.

“I’m very appreciative of the coaching staff that we have,” Reed said. “They are very supportive and we have a very supportive team that is willing to do anything for each other. That’s another aspect of the game that helps us stay on the same page.”

According to the Saints, the same page is still just the beginning of the book.

Even though the players are excited about their ranking, they plan on staying humble right now and maintaining the same work ethic. There is still a lot left to the season and the close-knit group plans to work hard to achieve their shared goals.

Each day they work to improve at least one aspect of their game because they always see room for improvement. Many players still remember where they started.

“We’re a veteran group in the aspect that we have upperclassmen who have been through a lot of things,” coach Samantha Quigley-Smith said.

“They have been through the bad times. They’ve been through the so-so times and through the better times.

They understand what it feels like to be crawling to get to the position that we’re in right now. It took a lot of hard work.

“It took years and years, so I think that they’re excited for every day and opportunity; they’re excited for every team that’s going to look to take

us down. I think they’re enthusiastic about this season and it shows in our play and our practice even. The team is so excited every day, and that is hard to coach.”

What must be satisfying to coach is the way that St. Francis has been playing.

Defense has been the focus all year, and so far in a majority of the games, the Saints hold the opposing team under their offensive averages.

The players pride themselves on getting the stops and transitioning them into strong offense.

Another huge improvement from the previous years is the confidence.

Last year, St. Francis went into the local rivalry game against Lewis thinking that they had a shot. This year, they went in with a different mindset and they came out with confidence that they can compete with highly touted teams.

“This year, we came into it and knew from the jump that we were a different team,” Reed said. “We talked as a team before and came to the conclusion that we would get the ‘W’. We won’t lose. In that game,

you could tell everyone was on the same page. No one stopped talking.

Everybody just had the confidence, and having a coach that believes in us is huge.”

The Saints players acknowledge that hard work, positive attitude and their support system got them to where they are now. That doesn’t mean that they’re stopping anytime soon. The hard work has just begun for them.

“You have a good feeling when you have a core group, a competitive group that wants to get better every single day. That’s where we really turned the corner these past three weeks,” Quigley-Smith said. “We’re not satisfied. We’re working hard every single day to do something better than we did the day before.”

“It comes down to teamwork and working hard,” Osusky said. “One of my favorite quotes is ‘Hard work beats talent when talent fails to work hard.’ Every day at practice we have to put in the hard work and get better each day. Take it one step at a time so we can accomplish our goals at the end of the year.”

Beachem, No. 25 Notre Dame rebound with win vs Colgate The ASSOCIATED PRESS SOUTH BEND, Ind. – V.J. Beachem scored 20 points to help No. 25 Notre Dame snap a two-game skid with a 7762 win over Colgate on Monday night.

Bonzie Colson finished with 13 points and seven rebounds, and Matt Farrell added 13 points and six assists for the Fighting Irish (10-2).

Will Ryman had 18 points and Nathan Harris added 17 for Colgate (2-10), which lost its sixth in a row – all in December.

In back-to-back losses to No. 1 Villanova and No. 15 Purdue, the Irish led by double digits in the first half of each game, but were outscored by an average of 16 points in the second half.

Against Colgate, the Irish again took a comfortable lead in the first 20 minutes, but struggled to put away the Raiders. Steve Vasturia’s 3-pointer with 7:23 to play gave Notre Dame its

largest lead at 21 points, but Colgate went on a 12-1 run to cut it to 10 with 4 minutes to go.

Consecutive baskets by Colson and a 3 by Beachem with 2:48 left got the Irish back on track, part of a 9-2 run in response.

Averaging 15 points a game, Beachem returned to form after turning in a four-point performance against Villanova, followed by a second half against Purdue in which he took just one shot as Notre Dame’s lead evaporated.

Notre Dame came in leading the nation with just 8.4 turnovers per game, but committed 10 in the first half alone.

Colgate contributed to the early sloppiness with 13 turnovers of its own while shooting only 21 percent from the floor as the Irish built a 16-point lead by halftime.

Notre Dame finished with a season-high 14 turnovers.

Bulls break out of their slump for rout of Pistons CHICAGO – Jimmy Butler scored 19 points, Rajon Rondo had 10 points, 14 assists and eight rebounds, and the Bulls beat the Detroit Pistons, 113-82, on Monday night to snap a three-game losing streak.

Taj Gibson added 16 points, Robin Lopez had 14, and Dwyane Wade, Doug McDermott and Nikola Mirotic had 13 apiece for the Bulls, which had lost six of eight.

Jon Leuer scored 16 points for the Pistons, who have dropped three straight and four of five.

After scoring just 69 points in a 26-point loss on Friday, the Bulls busted out for 69 points in the first two quarters, their best for any half this season.

The Bulls, which entered tied for sixth-worst in the NBA with a .436 fieldgoal percentage, made 17 of 21 shots (81 percent) in taking a 35-19 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Bulls had 15 assists on their 17 first-half field goals, with Rondo (seven) and Butler (six) leading the way.

Senator: Exploding e-cigarette recalls need to be considered The ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK – U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer is increasing the heat on the federal government to consider recalling e-cigarette batteries and devices that explode and catch fire, injuring users.

Schumer, a New York Democrat, has called e-cigarettes “ticking time bombs” and said they continue to cause injuries including severe burns.

At a news conference Sunday, Schumer cited a recent Associated Press story saying the FDA identified about 66 explosions in 2015 and early 2016 after recording 92 explosions from 2009 to September 2015.

He said he wants the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to figure out why so many devices, many from China, are exploding. He said the recent injuries are proof federal action is needed.

“Where there’s smoke, there’s fire and that seems to be the case – again and again – for many popular e-cigarettes that have injured dozens of peo-

ple,” Schumer said. “With any other product, serious action would have been taken and e-cigarettes should be no exception. Despite the explosions, no recalls have been issued. It’s radio silence from both the industry and the feds, so that’s why I’m sounding the alarm.”

E-cigarette user Katrina Williams,

a New York freight manager, said she wanted a safer alternative to smoking regular tobacco cigarettes and thought e-cigarettes were the answer – until one exploded in her pocket in April as she drove home from a beauty salon.

“It was like a firecracker,” she said, as it seared third-degree burns in her leg, blasted through her charred pants

and stuck in the dashboard.

As the use of e-cigarettes has increased over the past year, similar painful accidents have been recorded with greater frequency, with faulty lithium-ion batteries seen as the likely culprits. The same types of batteries are used safely in many consumer electronics, but they’ve been behind fires in hover boards and smartphones.

The AP story said the numbers kept by the FDA may be an undercount.

Just one hospital, the UW Medicine Regional Burn Center at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, said it has seen more than 20 patients with e-cigarette burns since it started tracking them informally in October 2015.

The industry maintains e-cigarettes are safe when used properly.

The Tobacco Vapor Electronic Cigarette Association encourages proper recharging of the batteries as a way to prevent possible injuries.

The FDA has said it’s reviewing e-cigarettes and will evaluate their batteries, including “amperage, voltage, wattage, battery type” and other issues.

Plainfield student appeared on Oprah Winfrey Network The HERALD-NEWS

Indian Trail Middle School seventh-grader grader Zoe Koz, 12, holds a photo of herself from when she was born in January 2004 three months premature. The steel band on her right arm in the photo is her dad Eric’s wedding band, which he put there just after she was born.

PLAINFIELD – Zoe Koz is a typical seventhgrader at Indian Trail Middle School in Plainfield.

The 12-year-old loves Harry Potter movies, science and studying animals, especially snowy owls.

Zoe said she wants to be an actress when she grows up because she sometimes does dramatic things – for example, being born three months early on January 6, 2004.

The Koz family appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Network’s “Where Are they Now” program on Dec. 17. She first appeared on an episode of Winfrey’s show focusing on “Miracle Babies” in October 2004, when she was 9 months old.

Zoe was the size of a Barbie doll and weighed less than a pound when she was born at Edward Hospital in Naperville. At the time, she was the third-smallest baby ever to be born and survive in the United States.

Her birth was dramatic enough to catch Oprah Winfrey’s eye. The family also appeared on “Good Morning America.”

What could have been several disabilities turned into hearing aids in both ears and a shorter stature than her peers.

Ankle replacement surgery available at Morris Hospital

MORRIS – Total ankle replacement surgery for individuals with advanced or end-stage arthritis is now being performed at Morris Hospital.

The procedure is designed to relieve pain in the ankle joint and preserve range of motion for those who suffer from arthritis caused by a previous injury, normal wear and tear or other

conditions that cause breakdown of the ankle joint, such as rheumatoid arthritis.

Dr. Kyle Pearson, a reconstructive foot and ankle surgeon on the medical staff at Morris Hospital who performs the surgery, said total ankle replacement can be a good alternative to ankle fusion for certain Dr. Kyle patients.

Pearson The goal of total ankle replacement surgery is to keep the ankle joint range of motion that patients had prior to surgery and allow a return to low-impact activities, such as walking, climbing stairs, riding bicycles or swimming.

The surgical technique works best in patients who are over age 55, weigh less than 250 pounds, have minimal to no deformity of the ankle and who do not have other significant medical concerns, such as diabetes, neuropathy, vascular disease or prior history of infection to the painful ankle.

Pearson notes ankle joint fusion remains a great option for his patients as well.

Pearson said ankle replacement surgery is considered only after nonsurgical measures to reduce pain and inflammation are tried, such as anti-inflammatories, activity modifications, shoe modifications, bracing of the ankle, physical therapy and injections.

Medications help fight seasickness Dear Doctors: I’m going sailing with friends soon. Since I tend to get motion sickness in cars and airplanes, I’m worried that means I’ll get seasick as well. Are there any natural remedies?

Dear Reader: If it helps at all, you’re far from alone. A large portion of the population suffers some degree of motion sickness during travel. The most common effects – dizziness, nausea, even vomiting – are sure to ruin your day. For some people, additional symptoms such as cold sweats, a throbbing headache or a bout of anxiety only deepen the misery.

The culprit in motion sickness is believed to be (scientists still aren’t sure) the disconnect between what your eyes see and what the sensitive mechanism in your inner ear, which controls balance, feels.

When you walk or run or twist or bend down, those structures in your inner ear, known as the vestibular system, are in sync with what your eyes are telling you. You are moving, but the ground you stand on is not.

On a boat, however, your eyes and your inner ear are sending seriously mixed messages to your brain. Your eyes know you are sitting still, but according to your vestibular system, you’re in motion. For reasons that are still unclear, it is this sensory disconnect that lights up pathways in the brain, causing the symptoms of motion sickness. And all you want is relief.

Some sufferers rely on antihistamines such as Dramamine, an over-the-counter medication, which can control nausea and vomiting. Prescription medications, including the Transderm Scop patch and promethazine, also can help with the symptoms of seasickness. But these medications can have side effects such as dry mouth or drowsiness.

Since you want to go the natural route, let’s take a look at your options.

If possible, gaze out at a fixed point on the horizon. This lets your brain confirm the input that it’s getting from your eyes and your inner ear – yep, you’re definitely in motion. (For people who tend to get carsick, riding in the front seat can help in the same way.)

As for natural remedies, a lot of travelers swear by ginger, which has been shown to ease nausea associated with motion sickness.

You can find ginger in powdered form in many natural food stores and pharmacies.

Dramamine also offers what it says is a clinically tested full dose of powdered ginger, packaged in a single capsule. Candied ginger and ginger tea also are options.

Although there is conflicting evidence over its effectiveness, acupressure has its proponents. In this method, constant pressure is applied to the insides of the wrists via special elastic wristbands.

When you do find an effective natural cure, there’s a bonus. You’re now prepared for the latest frontier in motion sickness – virtual reality.

My dad started an affair with a woman who is four years older than I am. He met her when he hired her for her “services.”

Fast-forward a year: He has left my mom. Mom left the state and has moved in with me. She’s trying to rebuild her life, but she’s still very much in love with my dad.

Dad, on the other hand, is miserable. His girlfriend is controlling to the point he’s not allowed to talk to his children or grandchildren.

She’s an alcoholic who mentally, verbally and physically abuses him. He recently left her and came to stay at my house. He told Mom and me he wanted a fresh start.

Abby, he was here for less than 48 hours and went back to the girlfriend. I am convinced he either has a drug problem or he’s sick. I have no idea how to help him and I’m terrified he is going to die.

Amy Lowell, a poet who died in 1925, said, “In science, read by preference the newest works. In literature, read the oldest. The classics are always modern.”

That sounds reasonable. At the bridge table, we have a preference that comes up in this deal. First, though, look at the East hand. What should he bid after South opens one spade, West passes, and North responds three no-trump to show 4-3-3-3 distribution, three spades and 15-17 high-card points? Then, where does the preference occur?

North’s three-no-trump response is an unusual agreement these days, but was textbook 50 years ago. (Nowadays, North would probably respond two clubs, which would leave East in a quandary. He might make a three-diamond weak jump overcall.)

Over three no-trump, East should intervene with four no-trump, showing at least 5-5 in the minors. South would probably double because his hand does not suggest a slam in spades. West will run to five clubs, and North will double.

Against five clubs doubled, North might lead the ace and another club, which would result in down one. Better here would be the club-two lead.

If declarer misguesses, he goes down two (or three if South shifts to a low spade at trick two).

However, suppose North rebids five spades. Then West will lead his singleton diamond. East wins with the ace and returns the diamond 10, his highest-remaining diamond, as a suit-preference signal for the higher-ranking of the other two side suits (hearts and clubs). West ruffs and gives his partner a heart ruff to defeat the contract.
