Alexander Lumber Company – Manhattan Lumber, together with grain and meatpacking, was one of the three most important commodities of 19th century Chicago.

During the second half of the 19th century, Chicago became the world’s largest lumber market. The commercial lumber business began as early as 1833 as shipments of lumber began to be shipped across Lake Michigan to help supply the local market with building materials.

During the next several decades, geography, the proximity to the northern forests and the needs of the growing local population made Chicago the perfect location for moving forest products around the region.

To tap into the need for local lumber, many new companies began operations in small towns around the Midwest.

One such company, the Alexander Lumber Company, can trace its beginnings to the 1890s when John Alexander and his partners Tom Brittingham and Joe Hixon, incorporated their new business. With a $5,000 loan from the Continental Illinois Bank of Chicago, the firm began operations in Aurora.

During the next several decades, John and his partners expanded lumber operations along the railroad lines that extended out of Chicago.

By negotiating a series of land leases with the railroads, the company was able to operate in towns along the expanding railroad right-of-way areas and set up more than one hundred “line yards” by the late 1920s.

In Manhattan, the opening of the Wabash Railroad in 1880 led to the establishment of the village. A business district developed rapidly around the new railroad depot, including a boarding house, hotel, a blacksmith shop and lumber businesses.

One of the early lumber companies was the Eberhart Lumber Company, whose beginnings can be traced to Frederick Eberhart, who owned prop-

‘PERCEPTION MEANS A LOT’ Joliet Junior College invests in new athletic, event space

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Joliet Junior College Event Center promises to do more than offer a brand-new athletic space.

The roughly 85,200-square-foot, two-story facility – previously called the Multipurpose Facility at the time of its groundbreaking – will offer a number of possible uses. JJC spokeswoman Kelly Rohder said the Event Center has space that can be for K-12 athletic events, craft fairs or the Joliet Regional Job Fair.

“Now there’s one space where people can come to do that,” Rohder said.

“So that will be very important for

the college moving forward – really pursuing some of those partnership opportunities.”

JJC has been working persistently on constructing the center, and JJC construction and facility planning manager Richard Lyman said the college is ahead of schedule because of the good winter season last year.

The center, which is located on the southwest side of the college’s main campus, is scheduled to open in fall 2017.

The indoor turf already has been installed in the center’s gym, which includes basketball courts, portable batting cages, bleachers and seating to accommodate athletic competitions

and graduation ceremonies.

“This is like walking on carpet,” Lyman said of the turf.

He said he learned a lot about turf on the Event Center project, including the difference between outdoor and indoor turf, the quality of it and even the spin of a baseball when it hits it.

He said JJC itself filled the role of a general contractor for the project, with himself as the construction manager. He said the college saved about $1 million by doing the work in-house.

The cost of the project for JJC is $22.6 million.

Lyman noted other features of the gym in the center, such as that it has a capacity of about 4,690 people, and has

one side with basketball courts and the other with turf. The configuration option for the gym can include basketball and volleyball tournaments.

When people are practicing baseball on the turf side, a heavy-duty curtain will drop, which can stop baseballs from flying to the other side, he said.

Overlooking the gym is a multipurpose room that also can be a space rented out to the community for events, Rohder said.

The center also includes space to display trophies, conditioning space, and athletic offices that are more than

A man of many hobbies, interests, causes Donald Tolen packed two lifetimes into one

NEW LENOX – Phyllis Tolen of New Lenox once asked a group of visiting children to count all the clocks in her home.

The total was 54 – all either created or repaired by Phyllis’ husband, Donald Tolen. One clock was shaped like Illinois; others used old marble from Joliet Central High School, where Donald taught, and which he obtained during remodeling, Phyllis said.

In addition to woodworking, Donald also was a gardener, mushroom hunter and airplane pilot. For 29 years, Donald faithfully attended each annual conference of the Illinois Geographical Society. He never forgot a student, and he saved all of their grades, Phyllis said.

“He loved to see his students; he loved teaching; he loved his classes,” she said.

Donald also built and flew model airplanes, refinished furniture, built most of their home in the Windemere subdivision and did crewel and rug hooking. He served in the Peace Corps, traveled overseas and then used his slides in his geography classes, Phyllis said.

To help out another teacher, Donald began donating his platelets at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital, Phyllis said. Every time Donald donated, he received a T-shirt. Phyllis estimates Donald donated about 130 times.

At Donald’s wake – he was 73 when he died Nov. 23 – Phyllis gave away the extra T-shirts since Donald never wore most of them.

“He liked wearing the old raggedy ones that were comfy,” Phyllis said.

“He was also known for his plaid shirts because he always wore a plaid shirt.”

Donald was born in Kansas, Illinois, the second youngest of nine children, all girls except Donald and his younger brother. An early memory was the holiday box he’d find outside each year.

“He always thought, ‘People must really like us because they leave these here on our porch,’ ” Phyllis said. “It wasn’t until later that he realized they were very poor.”

Donald started college at Eastern Illinois University on a state schol-

arship and then quit the following year because of poor grades, Phyllis said. He went to Alaska, where his sister lived – and where his father had worked for the pipeline – to work one year for the Federal Aviation Agency.

“I think he came up with a group of kids,” Phyllis said. “And he came back by hitchhiking.”

Donald returned to Eastern Illinois to study geography, which is where he met Phyllis. After they had married and Phyllis had graduated, Phyllis shelved her dream of working in the newly formed Peace Corps in favor of teaching in Oakland while Donald finished his master’s degree.

“One day he came home and said, ‘They’re giving that Peace Corps test.

Would you want to take it?’ ” she said.

In the fall of 1966, Donald and Phyllis, as part of the Peace Corps, went to Tacloban, Philippines, to teach at Leyte Normal School. They served two years. In the fall of 1968, the couple traveled to southeast Asia and Japan.

When they returned, Joliet Township High School District 204 hired Donald to teach geography and earth science, which he later taught at Joliet Central High School starting in 1983, as well as aviation, as Donald earned his aviation license in 1982, Phyllis said.

Their daughter, Dianna Perrico of Ohio, was born in 1970. That same year, Donald and Phyllis bought a “They put up the shell; you do everything else” home in New Lenox for $24,999, including the lot.

From 1974 to 1984, Donald and Phyllis participated in the American Host program, opening their home during the summers to teachers from Europe. When Dianna was older, they also participated in the Japanese Lobo 4-H program, hosting students for a month at a time. A German student also lived with them for a year.

An avid gardener, Donald “grew everything” in his 100-by-80-foot garden, which he started from seeds under lamps in his basement, Phyllis said. Guests always left with a wheelbarrow full of produce.

“He was known for having a garden that had no weeds,” Phyllis said.

After Donald retired, the couple traveled to Europe to visit the teach-

Even after Donald developed stomach cancer in 2013, he continued to teach his skills to these children, as well as to his grandsons, Zack and Zane.

Toward the end of his life, when Donald was too sick to hunt mushrooms any longer, a friend surprised

Donald with a nice hen of the woods mushroom, “so we could have some fried mushrooms.”

“Donald really did enjoy them,” Phyllis said.

Minooka approves increased levy for 2016

Shaw Media correspondent MINOOKA – Minooka trustees voted unanimously Tuesday to increase the 2016 levy by 9.2 percent.

Trustee Rudy Martin was absent.

The majority of the increase will come from new property brought into the village, village Financial Director John Harrington said.

“We are bringing in more money because we are bringing in more property,” he said.

The increase taxpayers actually will see is closer to 3.3 percent, depending on which county residents live in – Kendall, Will or Grundy.

The 3 percent increase will cover long-term projects coming up, such as needed road repairs.

Depending where residents live, they reside in seven to nine taxing districts, including the village, school districts and the county, among others.

“We are typically one of the smaller line items [on the levy],” Harrington said.

Adopt-A-Highway

Trustees approved an ordinance Tuesday to create an Adopt-A-Highway program in Minooka for the pro-

tection, maintenance and beautification of village highways.

The program will allow residents to support the village’s anti-litter campaign by taking care of a designated area of road.

The program came at the request of Grainger, who always has been active and involved in the community, Village Administrator Dan Duffy said.

Grainger already maintains Grainger Way and has requested to take care of the flower beds at the road entrance.

By creating an ordinance, it opens the door for other groups and organizations that would like to participate and maintain any major village road, Duffy said.

Groups and organizations must apply to the program and, if accepted, will be recognized with a sign erected in the area with the group’s name. Age restrictions require all participants to be 10 years old or older, according to the ordinance.

U.S. Cold Storage abatement

U.S. Cold Storage will receive the standard three-year tax abatement from the village for the final expansion project on its property located on Twin Rail Drive in Minooka.

Minooka trustees approved the

abatement facilitated by the Grundy Economic Development Commission.

Approval must be given by all taxing bodies, including Grundy County, Aux Sable Township, school districts 111 and 201, the Minooka Fire Protection District, the Three Rivers Public Library District and Joliet Junior College.

U.S. Cold Storage came to the village in the early 2000s, Duffy said, and has had several expansions in that time.

This new expansion project will be for 100,000 square feet of space for freezers for customers and additional truck parking.

“They will add about 30 new employees,” Duffy said.

New radios for 911 service

An intergovernmental agreement with Grundy County allows the village to participate in buying new STARCOM21 radios from Motorola for the county’s emergency system.

The village’s upfront cost for the radios is $125,000, but they will be financed over several budget terms, Duffy said.

There also will be an annual fee for each 911 agency, which allows the new equipment to communicate with the STARCOM21 system, and an impact fee to mount the equipment on

three towers in the village.

“This [agreement] will allow us to tap into some early savings with Motorola and [provide] proper communication for our 911 system,” Duffy said.

Police department renovation

Low bidder Talsma Builders of Alsip was awarded the renovation of the Minooka Police Department at a cost of $530,250.

This is the last piece of the project renovating the municipal building, Duffy said.

It includes expansions of the squad room, administrative area, and evidence and booking room.

“This will serve current and future needs and bring the office space up to village code,” Duffy said.

The renovation project began in 2014 with the building of the community center and administrative offices on the village’s side. In 2015, locker rooms with shower capabilities were added to the police side, the clerk’s office was expanded, and protective barriers and bulletproof glass were added for employee safety.

“This last phase will position us for the next 30 to 40 years doing business in Minooka,” Duffy said.

fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Lincoln-Way School District 210 officials presented enrollment data to the school board last week that projected declining student populations in the coming years.

The data presented at Thursday’s board meeting by Brian Murphy, the district’s technology director, did not factor in future growth or students placed out of the district.

In one chart based on figures from feeder districts of student enrollment as of Oct. 15, District 210’s enrollment of 6,954 for the 2016-17 school year is estimated to decrease by 81 next school year.

In another chart accounting for the estimated 98 percent of students in the class of 2021 – current eighth-graders – and beyond enrolling into District 210, Murphy said the district can anticipate a drop in enrollment between 80 to 115 students next school year.

Enrollment ultimately is project-

ed to decrease to 6,188 or 6,064 for the 2022-23 school year.

Taryn Atwell, the district’s spokeswoman, stated in an email Friday that the numbers presented at Thursday’s meeting only account for current students in feeder schools and are not representative of potential growth.

“The district will continue to monitor enrollment numbers from feeder districts to determine if there are additional move-ins to the area,” Atwell stated. “At this time, however, it is best to be conservative with our estimates.

We will continue to operate three schools for the foreseeable future.”

Declining student enrollment was one of the factors district officials have said led to the district’s financial troubles and the closing of Lincoln-Way North High School.

The additions of North and West high schools in 2008 and 2009 were made to meet projected growth in student population that never came. Enrollment projections were not matching reality as early as fiscal 2006. The

board approved closing North in 2015 as part of its deficit reduction plan.

The architectural capacity of Lincoln-Way Central and East is 3,750 students, while West’s is 2,500 students. According to the 2016 Illinois Report Card, Central’s enrollment is at 1,902, East is at 2,151 and West is at 1,310.

By comparison, Joliet Township High School District 204 has seen steady enrollment growth over the years with total district enrollment – including two high schools and an alternate school – at 6,417 students this year. Joliet West High School has 3,261 students, and Central has 3,095 students.

Lincoln-Way board member Christopher Kosel said looking at data from Murphy’s presentation, between the 2016-17 and 2022-23 school years Lincoln-Way West would lose the least amount of students compared to Central and East, as all three schools decline in enrollment.

“The schools are becoming closer in size as time goes on,” Kosel said.

That morning, Imelda received a phone call in Mexico from Channahon Fire Chief John Petrakis. He relayed that they had already contacted the school and were finding someone to watch the kids until she could get a flight back from Mexico.

“At first, I just panicked. I wondered, ‘What’s going to happen to my babies,’” she said. “He [Petrakis] told me kids usually panic and cry, but Joaquin handled it like a man. It made my heart melt.”

Imelda could only imagine what would have happened if the seizure would have come on just a few minutes later, after the kids were on the bus.

“Despite the chaos, Joaquin literally saved his daddy’s life,” she said.

Imelda was able to get a flight home the next day. When she returned, her neighbors had all brought over food and were helping to take care of things.

“My neighbors are amazing; I am so super blessed,” she said.

Everyone she spoke to at the fire department was very helpful and “super sweet,” she added.

Joaquin knew what to do from fire and safety classes he has at Pioneer Path School, conducted by Fire and Life Safety Educator Cindy Wilson for the Channahon and Minooka Fire Protection Districts.

“They tell us to dial 911 for emergencies or for help,” Joaquin said.

Because his dad has epilepsy, the family also discusses the right things to do, Joaquin said.

He was a little nervous when everything was happening, Joaquin admitted, but he knew he had to stay calm to help his dad.

Joaquin was honored at school by the Channahon Fire Protection District, Channahon police and dispatcher Johnson with a 911 Hero Medal award for his heroic behavior on Nov. 17.

He’s been getting a lot of pats on the back for a job well done – from his classmates, teachers, the fire department and police department. But especially from his mom and dad.

The Mendoza family feels grateful this holiday season, for their son and the community.

“I love having a community that cares for us and loves us,” Imelda said.

“It’s more than anything I could ask for.”

The Mendoza family of Channahon received early Christmas presents this year. But this most special gift wasn’t delivered by Santa Claus. It came from their 10-year-old son, Joaquin Mendoza.

On Nov. 8, Alfredo Mendoza was getting his two children, Joaquin and his younger sister Lali, out the front door to catch the school bus when he had an epileptic seizure. As he fell to the floor, Alfredo hit the wall, causing a severe cut to the back of his head.

His wife, Imelda, was visiting her grandfather in Mexico, so no one else was in the home.

Despite his father’s seizure, a large amount of blood and his 5-year-old sister becoming hysterical, Joaquin remembered what he had been taught in school – to dial 911 in the event of an emergency.

WESCOM dispatcher Brandon Johnson got the call from Joaquin at 7:45 a.m. that morning.

“He stated his father was having a seizure and needed an ambulance,” Johnson recalled. “He was very calm; he followed all my instructions.”

Joaquin listened to Johnson’s medical instructions to put a towel and maintain pressure on his dad’s head wound. At the same time, Joaquin kept Lali calm and continued to reassure his unconscious father that he would be all right.

“I could probably count on one hand the number of child callers we have, and this was one of the best,”

Another elector, Nancy Shepardson, is undecided about whether change is needed, but said she’s leaning toward repeal.

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois’ electoral college voters are split over whether changes are needed in how the nation elects a president after Donald Trump triumphed despite losing the popular vote to Hillary Clinton.

The Associated Press contacted 13 of Illinois’ 20 electors, and six said the electoral college should be repealed, while four said it should stay in place.

Three others were undecided or said it should at least be reviewed.

Clinton easily won Illinois, and the electors here are expected to cast their votes for her when they meet Monday at the Capitol in Springfield – a formality in a state that has favored the Democratic Party’s presidential candidate since 1992.

But Illinois’ electors will submit their votes with mixed feelings about what to do with the system that put Trump in the White House.

Joliet Park District Executive Director Tom Carstens said park officials haven’t discussed the center but will be talking about potential future involvement.

“I’m sure we will have discussion about possible cooperative use,” Carstens said.

Lyman said one of the most important things for the college is student perception of the facilities.

“Perception means a lot. You walk into a nice building like this. … The first perception means a lot,” he said.

OBITUARIES DONALD ALLEN DUGGINS

Born: November 6, 1935; in Rea Valley, AR Died: December 17, 2016; in Mountain Home, AR Donald “Don” Allen Duggins, of Mountain Home, AR, formerly of Joliet, IL, peacefully passed away in his home the evening of December 17, 2016 surrounded by loving family. Don was born on November 6, 1935 in Rea Valley, AR to Carol (Putnam) and Ulis Duggins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Warren, Nadine, Harry Lee, and Karen.

He is survived by his loving wife of over 62 years, Iva (Purkes) Duggins; 5 children, Lynette (Paul) Bloyd, Sybil Perkins, Donald (Debi), Ronald, and Patrick (Diane); 19 grandchildren, PJ (Andrea), Iva Nicole (Lucas), Christin, Jessica (Chris), Stephanie (Michael), Sean (April), Mike, Katie (Scott), Donnie (Heather), David, Dana, Adam (Katie), Travis (Lindsay), Tammy, Linsey (Vince), Maggie, Derek, Ryan, and Rachel; 16 great-grandchildren; and 2 sisters-in-law, Loma Purkes and Relda Purkes.

At the age of 9, Don’s family moved to Beaumont, TX where he went on to graduate from South Park High School in 1953 and attended 2 years at Lamar University. He was a city fireman in Beaumont from age 18-21, received an honorable discharge after 12 years of services with the Texas National Guard, was a Mason for over 50 years, and had a fulfilling 36 1/2 year career with Mobil Oil as an operations superintendent and training coordinator for fire & safety. During his work with Mobil, he traveled the United States and Canada, was sent for specialty training at Texas A&M University, and moved with his family to Illinois in 1972.

It wasn’t until after his retirement in 1994 that he returned home to the Arkansas he always loved.

Don was known for his love of dogs and his passion for music, both of which he passed on to his family. He acquired his license to judge dog shows from the American Kennel Club, where he was active for 20 years judging both in the U.S. and Canada.

You could say, music started it all as Don fell in love with his high school sweetheart, and love of his life, Iva, on a school band trip. While Iva’s musical career may have been cut short by marrying Don on April 30, 1954, he went on to play in several bands. Music was central to his life up to his very last days, and a love he and Iva passed on to their children and grandchildren through singing and playing musical instruments.

He was a faithful Dallas Cowboy fan from the team’s inception, Bob Lilly as his favorite player. Calm, laidback, sharp as a tack, Don enjoyed his retirement.

He would take his grandchildren fishing,

for rides in his antique car, or play his guitar in the early days, later you could find him watching Jeopardy, the History Channel, or catching up with friends and family through email. An inspiring, hardworking, loving, Christian family man, he will be truly and immensely missed.

Visitation will be from 1:00 to 8:00 PM Monday, December 19th with family receiving from 6:00 to 8:00 PM and funeral services will be 11:00 AM on Tuesday, December 20th. Services are being held

ZELDA JAEGER Zelda Jaeger, born in Williamston, NC to Lloyd and Louise Hardison, died peacefully in Provena St. Joseph Hospital, December 15th, 2016 in Joliet, IL at the age of 89 with family by her side.

Zelda was predeceased by her husband, Paul; and is survived by children, Paul Jaeger, wife Vi of Portland, OR, Steve Jaeger, wife Jan of Joliet, IL, Debbie Mitchell, husband William of Oxnard, CA; plus sister-in-law, Diane Jaeger; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

She was an active participant in Scouts, Summer Bible School, and PTA programs.

For over 30 years she worked at the United Cerebral Palsy Center, where she made remarkable contributions to the children and their families and really found her calling. Her superiors described her as one who was born to teach, not taught.

She also managed the food concessions at the Joliet Beach Club where she mentored students, who will never forget their first job.

Zelda was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church and often volunteered both there and at The Villa Franciscan nursing home.

A celebration of Zelda’s life is scheduled on Tuesday December 20, 2016 from 2:00 to 6:00pm with a service at 6:00 p.m. at the Blackburn-Giegerich-Sonntag Funeral Home at 1500 Black Rd. Joliet, IL 60435.

Hungarian actress Zsa Zsa Gabor dies at age 99

The Associated Press LOS ANGELES – Zsa Zsa Gabor, the jet-setting Hungarian actress who made a career out of multiple marriages, conspicuous wealth and jaded wisdom about the glamorous life, has died. She was 99.

The middle and most famous of the Gabor sisters died Sunday of a heart attack at her Los Angeles home, husband Frederic von Anhalt told The Associated Press.

Gabor had been hospitalized repeatedly since she broke her right hip in July 2010 after a fall at her Bel-Air home. She already had to use a wheelchair after being partly paralyzed in a 2002 car accident and suffering a stroke in 2005. Most of her right leg was amputated in January 2011 because of gangrene and the left leg was also threatened. Von Anhalt duly reported her misfortunes to the media.

The great aunt of Paris Hilton and a spiritual matriarch to the Kardashians and other tabloid favorites, she was the original hall-of-mirrors celebrity, famous for being famous for being famous. Starting in the 1940s, Gabor rose from beauty queen to millionaire’s wife to minor TV personality to minor film actress to major public character. With no special talent, no hit TV series such as her sister Eva’s “Green Acres,” Zsa Zsa nevertheless was a long-running hit just being Zsa Zsa – her accent drenched in diamonds, her name synonymous with frivolity and camp as she winked and carried on about men, dahling, and the droll burdens of the idle rich.

Her secret, in part, was being in on the joke, once saying about a 1956 TV role, “I play a fabulously rich woman who has just bought her fifth husband; she is very unhappy. I won’t tell you who it’s supposed to be.” Ever game for a laugh, Gabor spoofed her image in a videotaped segment on David Letterman’s “Late Show,” which had the two stars driving from one fast-food restaurant to another, sipping sodas and digging into burgers like they were slabs of wedding cake.

Amid all the trivia, she had a peripheral part in two big scandals of the early 21st century: the death of Anna Nicole Smith (von Anhalt claimed to have had an affair with her) and the alleged financial scam of Bernard Madoff (a lawyer said she might have lost $10 million through him). And she was in the spotlight for a dust-up from the late 20th century: “The slap heard ’round the world.”

In June 1989, Gabor smacked Paul Kramer, a police officer, on a Beverly

Hills street, after he pulled over her Rolls-Royce Corniche convertible for a traffic violation. She was convicted of misdemeanor battery on a police officer, driving without a driver’s license and having an open container of alcohol in the car. She served three days in jail, performed community service at a woman’s shelter and paid $13,000 in fines and restitution.

When she was freed, she told reporters the jailers were kind but “at first I was petrified. They even took my makeup away.”

Gabor kept up the act in the advice book “How to Catch a Man, How to Keep a Man, How to Get Rid of a Man,” and in the exercise video “It’s Simple Darling,” in which she banters and stretches with a pair of muscular young trainers. Her memoir, “One Life Is Not Enough,” came out in 1991 and dished about everything from her virginity (gone at 15) to the endless men who came on to her (She would claim that William Paley of CBS promised Gabor her own show if only she would spend an afternoon with him.).

Gabor had one child, Francesca Hilton, from her marriage to hotelier Conrad Hilton. In later years, Gabor, von Anhalt and Francesca battled in court over family finances. Francesca Hilton died of an apparent stroke in 2015.

Sari Gabor – Zsa Zsa is a family nickname – was born in Budapest in 1917, according to a finishing school yearbook kept by a former classmate.

Various references over the years have given other birth dates; Gabor usually avoided the subject. She was still in Hungary when she won a beauty contest and married and divorced a Turkish diplomat, Turhan Belge.

Gabor, sisters Eva and Magda, and their mother, Jolie, emigrated to America around World War II. Zsa Zsa gained notice when she became the wife of Conrad Hilton, whom she married in 1942, and by the following decade all the Gabors were celebrities.

(Eva died in 1995 at age 74. Mother Jolie died in April 1997 at age 97, and sister Magda died two months later at age 78).

In 1998, cultural historian Neal Gabler diagnosed her kind of celebrity as “The Zsa Zsa Factor.”

“Racial nationalism of all kinds is on the rise,” said Mark Potok of the Southern Poverty Law Center.

The Nation has been largely closed off to outsiders, making it impossible even for those who follow the movement closely to gauge its strength. Neither Farrakhan nor the head minister of the movement’s Mosque Maryam in Chicago, Ishmael Muhammad, responded to interview requests.

Still, Farrakhan and his message of black empowerment clearly have an ongoing impact. The Million Man March he organized in 1995, drawing hundreds of thousands to Washington, remains a cultural touchstone, and hiphop artists praise him in their music.

The Nation has an extensive prison ministry, along with health and social service programs, and the movement’s militia, the Fruit of Islam, provides security at public housing and elsewhere.

That name recognition and high level of organization has left the Nation well situated to take advantage of the

current political moment, including the emergence of Black Lives Matter protests over police shootings of black men.

“We have to turn to each other,” said Nation member Duane Muhammad, 63, a Chicago-area elected official who helps produce videos of Farrakhan.

In Chicago, Nation members stood between police and marchers at a post-Thanksgiving protest last year over the killing of black teenager Laquan McDonald by a white police officer. Marchers blocked traffic and store entrances along the Magnificent Mile shopping district, and Nation members “formed a line and made sure we were OK,” said Ja’Mal Green, a Chicago activist.

Zain Abdullah, a Temple University professor who specializes in Islamic studies, noted the Nation first gained national prominence in 1957 after their stunningly disciplined Harlem protest after police beat Nation member Johnson Hinton. “Before that, the membership was a couple of hundred.

After that, people were coming to the temple to listen and join,” Abdullah said.

Online, the Nation’s presence has grown. Sunday services from Mosque Maryam are streamed live. Farrakhan’s public speeches and sermons are on YouTube. He has more than 637,000 followers on Facebook and 462,000 on Twitter.

CHICAGO – Minister Louis Farrakhan, head of the Nation of Islam, spoke from a podium draped in the red, black and green of the Pan-African flag, a symbol of black pride.

It was the week after Donald Trump won the presidency. The result had delighted a new generation of white supremacists, and Farrakhan was analyzing the political landscape.

In a speech before the State of the Black World Conference in New Jersey, he warned, “The white man is going to push. He’s putting in place the very thing that will limit the freedom of others.” Then he pointed to the crowd, smiled and said, “That’s what you needed,” as motivation to finally separate from whites.

“My message to Mr. Trump: Push it real good,” Farrakhan said, building to a roar that drew applause and cheers. “Push it so good that black people say, ‘I’m outta here. I can’t take it no more.’ ” After a presidential campaign that emboldened white identity politics, the Nation of Islam, a black separatist religious movement, is positioning itself as newly relevant.

Bitter cold front moves across Plains to Midwest, heads east

CHICAGO – Dangerous, record-low temperatures caused cancellations of some holiday festivities in the Plains and Midwest over the weekend before the cold front pushed into the Ohio Valley and the Eastern Seaboard on Sunday.

The National Weather Service forecasts a warming trend to start early in the week in many spots as a quieter weather pattern is expected to develop.

Cook Co. Jail officials find laptop in inmate’s cell

CHICAGO – Cook County Jail officials are trying to figure out how an inmate who was allowed access to a laptop to prepare for his criminal case was able to keep it there long enough to record homemade talk shows on it.

In a news release, the sheriff’s department said 41-year-old Jimmie Smith had the laptop in his cell on Dec. 5 when officers tried to retrieve it. During a confrontation, he allegedly punched an officer in the face. He was charged with aggravated battery.

An investigation revealed that Smith, who is being held without bond on several charges including attempted murder and kidnapping, had recorded a show he called “My Back’s Against the Wall” while in jail. The computer also contained lewd

Gary, Hammond, East Chicago getting $5.6M for blighted homes

INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority said the Lake County cities of Gary, Hammond and East Chicago will receive a combined $5.6 million to eliminate blighted homes.

The agency said Gary will receive $4.4 million; East Chicago, $914,000; and Hammond, $268,000. The Blight Elimination Program funds will be drawn from the $221.7 million in federal funds the state has received.

The agency said the three cities were eligible to receive the funds after meeting certain milestones in an initial round of funding.

The funds are not grants but are structured as forgivable loans.

France, Russia reach compromise as Aleppo rescue still uncertain

BEIRUT – France struck a compromise Sunday with Russia on a U.N. resolution that it said would prevent “mass atrocities” in besieged areas of Aleppo, where thousands of trapped civilians and rebel fighters await evacuation in freezing temperatures.

On the ground, prospects for swift evacuations from Aleppo and other besieged areas were thrown into doubt again Sunday after militants burned buses assigned to the rescue operation, although one convoy of five buses was reported to have reached safety from the city late Sunday.

The Aleppo evacuations were to have been part of a wider deal that would simultaneously allow more than 2,000 sick and wounded people to leave two pro-government villages that have been besieged by Syrian rebels. Most villagers are Shiite Muslims, while most rebels are Sunni Muslims.

Six buses that were among those poised to enter the villages of Foua and Kfarya on Sunday were set on fire by unidentified militants, presumably to scuttle any deal.

A video posted online showed armed men near the burning buses as celebratory gunshots rang out. “The buses that came to evacuate the apostates have been burned,” the narrator of the video said. He warned that no “Shiite pigs” would be allowed to leave the towns.

The video could not be verified independently, but was in line with Associated Press report-

ing from the area.

Earlier Sunday, pro-Syrian government TV stations showed dozens of buses on stand-by at a crossing near eastern Aleppo, reportedly poised to resume evacuations from the opposition’s last foothold in the city. Later, a Syrian opposition war monitoring group said the first civilians and fighters to evacuate eastern Aleppo in over 48 hours arrived safely in the countryside from the city. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said shortly before midnight Sunday that government forces allowed five buses to leave Aleppo.

Evacuations were suspended two days earlier amid mutual recriminations after several thousand people had been ferried out of the war zone. Thousands more desperate civilians are believed trapped in the city.

About 2,700 children were evacuated in the first rescue mission earlier this week, but hundreds more “are now waiting in freezing temperatures, close to the front lines,” said Shushan Mebrahtu of the U.N. agency for children, UNICEF. “We are deeply worried.”

The troubled evacuations are throwing into disarray an Aleppo deal that was brokered last week by Syria ally Russia and opposition supporter Turkey.

The deal marked a turning point in the country’s civil war. With the opposition leaving Aleppo, Syrian President Bashar Assad has effectively reasserted his control over Syria’s five largest cities and its Mediterranean coast nearly six years after a national movement to unseat him took hold.

WASHINGTON – One of President-elect Donald Trump’s first, and defining, acts next year could come on Republican legislation to cut off taxpayer money from Planned Parenthood.

Trump sent mixed signals during the campaign about the 100-year-old organization, which provides birth control, abortions and various women’s health services. He said “millions of women are helped by Planned Parenthood,” but he also endorsed efforts to defund it.

Trump once described himself as “very pro-choice.” Now he’s in the anti-abortion camp.

Still, the Republican has been steadfast in calling for repeal of President Barack Obama’s health care law, and the GOP-led Congress is eager to comply. One of the first pieces of legislation will be a repeal measure that’s paired with cutting off money for Planned Parenthood. While the GOP may delay the impact of scuttling the law for almost four years, denying Planned Parenthood about $400 million in Medicaid funds would take effect immediately.

“We’ve already shown what we believe with respect to funding of Planned Parenthood,” House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., told reporters last month.

“Our position has not changed.”

Legislation to both repeal the law and cut Planned Parenthood funds for services to low-income women moved through Congress along party lines last year. Obama vetoed it; Trump’s win removes any obstacle.

Cutting off Planned Parenthood from taxpayer money is a long-sought dream of social conservatives, but it’s a loser in the minds of some GOP strategists. Planned Parenthood is loathed by anti-abortion activists who are the backbone of the GOP coalition. Polls, however, show that the group is favorably viewed by a sizable majority

Continued opposition from Collins, which appears likely, would put the repeal measure on a knife’s edge in the Senate, where Republicans will have a 52-48 majority next year. Senate GOP leaders could afford to lose just one other Republican.

Anti-abortion conservatives have long tried to cut Planned Parenthood funds, arguing that reimbursements for nonabortion services such as gynecological exams help subsidize abortions.

Although Planned Parenthood said it performed 324,000 abortions in 2014, the most recent year tallied, the vast majority of women seek out contraception, testing and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases, and other services including cancer screenings.

The drive against Planned Parenthood picked up steam in 2015 after an anti-abortion group called the Center for Medical Progress released secretly recorded videos that it claimed showed Planned Parenthood officials profiting from sales of fetal tissue for medical research. The measure, however, would strip Planned Parenthood’s Medicaid funding for only a year, a step taken to give time for continued investigations of Planned Parenthood’s activities. A House panel still is active, but investigations by 13 states have been concluded without charges of wrongdoing.

Packers’ win over Bears continues trend

Packers built to win through draft; Bears trying to get there

BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush The Bears’ 30-27 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday at Soldier Field on a 32-yard Mason Crosby field goal with no time left on the clock left Bears fans wondering again why the Packers beat the Bears so often.

Many fingers were being pointed at coach John Fox’s clock management and/or his decision to kick a tying 22yard field goal on fourth-and-goal from the Packers 4-yard line with 1:19 to play after driving 75 yards on 14 plays to get there.

Right or wrong, Fox is not the real problem.

This is why the Packers are the Packers and the Bears are the Bears.

After taking over as the Packers general manager in January 2005, Ted Thompson used his first draft choice three months later to select future NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers with the 24th pick in the first round after 23 teams passed on him, including the Bears, who used their first pick to take Cedric Benson fourth. Since then, Thompson also has drafted quarterbacks Ingle Martin, Brian Brohm, Matt Flynn, B.J. Coleman and, in 2015, Brett Hundley, their current backup with the 147th pick in the fifth round.

3 things that worked Fourth-quarter Barkley: The Bears’ quarterback rallied back from four turnovers to complete 15 of 20 passes in the final quarter for 166 yards and a touchdown, leading the Bears to 17 consecutive points to tie the score.

Special teams: Josh Bellamy downed one Pat O’Donnell punt at the 1-yard line, and another punt of his was returned for only 2 yards. Bellamy also stuck Ty Montgomery on a kickoff return, forcing the Packers to start a drive at the 15-yard line. Connor Barth made both of his field goals.

Red-zone defense: The defense held inside the 20, where the Packers scored touchdowns on only two of five opportunities. Granted, one of those red-zone field goals was the game-winning kick from Mason Crosby, but the Bears never would have been in position to tie if the defense hadn’t made stops near the goal line.

Tackling Ty: A few days after Vic Fangio reminded everyone how bad the Bears defense he inherited was, Packers wideout-turned-running back Ty Montgomery made this ‘D’ look like the old group. He rushed for 162 yards, including a 61-yarder – the longest run the Bears had allowed since 2013.

Protecting the football: The end-of-half interception on a Hail Mary wasn’t a big deal, but the ensuing fumble on a strip-sack and back-to-back interceptions in the third quarter were. The Bears were fortunate to make it a game after four total giveaways and zero takeaways to back it up.

Third-down offense: The Bears were 3 for 8 on third down, including missing on manageable opportunities in the first quarter (third-and-3, third-and-4). The most notable miss came on the final drive, when Micah Hyde broke up a pass to Cameron Meredith, forcing the Bears to settle for a tying field goal.

Adams’ first drop: Packers wideout Davante Adams, who torched the Bears in Lambeau Field, had two drops in the end zone. His first, with 50 seconds left in the first half, kept the Packers from taking the lead before halftime. They settled for a field goal and a 10-10 score.

Paulsen’s hold: The Bears were in business with 1:50 left in the game, trailing by three. They had first-and-goal at the Packers’ 3-yard line, but Logan Paulsen was called for a holding penalty, backing them up. The Bears did have two shots from the 4-yard line but eventually kicked a field goal after an incomplete pass on third-and-goal.

Rodgers to Nelson: A play that seemed oh-so-Packers and oh-so-Bears, symbolizing the rivalry in the past eight years. Facing third-and-11 with 31 seconds left in a tie game, Rodgers launched it to Jordy Nelson behind corner Cre’Von LeBlanc with no safety in sight. The 60-yard play set up the winning field goal, making the Bears’ comeback attempt fall short.

Barkley fails to ‘wow’ Pack

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com CHICAGO – Julius Peppers did not appreciate the presumption that Matt Barkley’s fourth-quarter performance was impressive to the ninetime Pro Bowler.

“Who said I was impressed?” Peppers responded after the Packers’ 3027 win at Soldier Field.

“I thought he played well. I’m not discrediting him or trying to say anything bad about him, he played a [heck] of a game,” said the former Bear, “but I wasn’t impressed.”

Barkley has become a popular player for fans of this 3-11 team. He hasn’t played like a third-stringer that a rebuilding team is riding out to the finish. At times, he has played like the former No. 1 player in the country, someone who could be in the quarterback conversation in 2017 in Chicago, or elsewhere. His two interceptions in the third quarter, however, showed Barkley playing like the career backup he has been.

“He was a good quarterback. He made the throws he needed to make, besides the two mistakes he made to me, which was a blessing, thank you,” said Packers safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix. “He’s a good quarterback.

He’s going to develop into something special.”

That was high praise for Barkley, and what the Bears’ personnel staff is working to evaluate, but the two picks didn’t help the “something special” potential.

On his first INT, Barkley said he “just hung on to it too long, hoping [Daniel Brown] was going to win.”

The second interception, also over the middle, came when Barkley thought Daniel Braverman “was going to cross face and get around the guy, but it didn’t happen that way,

Peppers was available after the Bears released him in 2014, and since becoming a Packer he has notched 24 sacks and seven forced fumbles.

The Packers took advantage and went up, 27-10, in single-digit temperatures, but Barkley – the “Cali boy,” as teammates mockingly reminded him during the week of practice – battled back, as he often has since becoming the starter.

Barkley completed 15 of 20 passes in the fourth quarter, including a touchdown to Alshon Jeffery. The Bears tied the score at 27 instead of taking the lead because Micah Hyde broke up Barkley’s pass to Cameron Meredith on third-and-goal late in the game.

The Packers seemed to give credit to Barkley for making the plays but weren’t overly enamored with the specific plays he was making. They praised Barkley but certainly didn’t anoint him.

“He was making the easy throws, it’s as simple as that,” Hyde said. “He knew what defense we were in and just made the easy throws, and the receivers were breaking tackles, I think there were a couple penalties.

He adjusted to his mistakes and went out there and played huge in that fourth quarter.”

Peppers gave props for the Bears’ comeback to John Fox – coincidentally (or not), the coach who drafted Peppers in 2002 with Carolina.

“That’s more of a reflection of the head coach,” Peppers said. “His imprint was on that of how he plays the game and how those guys follow him.

They got down – that was a tough spot for them to be in – but they kept fighting, made a comeback and made it a great game. Succop, Titans beat Chiefs on last-second 53-yard FG The ASSOCIATED PRESS

KANSAS CITY, Missouri – Ryan Succop kicked a 53-yard field goal into the wind as time expired Sunday to give the Tennessee Titans a 19-17 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs on a frigid afternoon at Arrowhead Stadium.

Succop came up short on his first try at the winner, but Chiefs coach Andy Reid had called a timeout just before the snap. Given a second chance, Succop knocked it through with a couple feet to spare as the Titans poured off the bench to celebrate.

The Titans’ rallied from a 17-7 hole, and Derrick Henry’s second touchdown got Tennessee (8-6) within 17-16 with just more than three minutes left. But Titans coach Mike Mularkey went for the 2-point conversion and the lead. Marcus Mariota was pressured immediately, and his pass never reached the end zone.

But the Chiefs (10-4), trying to clinch a playoff spot, were unable to run out the clock, and Tennessee got the ball back with a minute left. With no timeouts, Mariota calmly found Rishard Matthews for 19 yards and Delanie Walker twice to set up Succop’s field-goal attempt.

Tennessee is tied for the AFC South lead with Houston.

TEXANS 21, JAGUARS 20: At Hous-

ton, Tom Savage threw for 260 yards after Brock Osweiler was benched in the second quarter, and Lamar Miller scored Houston’s only touchdown with less than three minutes remaining.

The win was Houston’s 10th straight in the division and left the Texans (8-6) tied with Tennessee for the AFC South lead. But Houston controls its playoff future with a 5-0 mark in the division. Jacksonville is 2-10.

FALCONS 41, 49ERS 13: At Atlanta, Devonta Freeman ran for three touchdowns, Matt Ryan passed for two more and the Falcons clinched their first winning season since 2012.

Freeman rushed for 139 yards and capped his big day with a 34-yard touchdown run. Ryan completed 17 of 23 passes for 286 yards, including a pair of 9-yard scoring tosses to Taylor Gabriel and Austin Hooper.

The Falcons (9-5) made sure they didn’t overlook the 49ers (1-13), moving a step closer to getting back to the playoffs after a three-season absence.

SAINTS 48, CARDINALS 41: At Glendale, Arizona, Drew Brees snapped out of a two-game funk to throw for 389 yards and four touchdowns in the highest-scoring game in the NFL this season. Brees, who had no TDs and six interceptions his previous two games, completed 37 of 48 with no picks.

Brandin Cooks caught seven passes for a career-best 186 yards for the Saints (6-8), including touchdown plays of 65 and 45 yards.

David Johnson rushed for 53 yards and caught four passes for 55 yards for Arizona (5-8-1). The second-year back became the first player in NFL history to have at least 100 yards from scrimmage in the first 14 games of a season.

Johnson rushed for two touchdowns, giving him 17 TDs this season and 30 in his first 30 games as a pro.

RAVENS 27, EAGLES 26: At Baltimore, the Ravens survived a desperate comeback bid by the Eagles, stopping a 2-point conversion with four seconds left.

On a wet and windy day, the Ravens maintained control of their playoff possibilities. If Baltimore defeats Pittsburgh on Christmas Day and Cincinnati in the regular-season finale, the Ravens will enter the postseason as AFC North champions.

Baltimore (8-6) led 27-17 with just more than six minutes left when Joe Flacco threw an interception inside the Philadelphia 10 to give the Eagles (5-9) another chance.

The Eagles got the ball back at their 41 with 1:39 to go. A 24-yard completion to Zach Ertz and a pass interference call against rookie Tavon Young set up a 4-yard touchdown run by Wentz that got Philadelphia within a point.

First-year coach Doug Pederson went for the win. Wentz threw over the middle to Jordan Matthews, who couldn’t get his hands on a ball that appeared to be tipped.

GIANTS 17, LIONS 6: At East Rutherford, New Jersey, Odell Beckham Jr. made another one-handed touchdown catch to delight replay fanatics, the defense turned in another stifling performance and the Giants inched closer to their first playoff berth since 2011.

NFC North-leading Detroit (9-5) had won five in a row.

The win was the eighth in nine games for the Giants (10-4), and it gave them their best record through 14 games since 2008, when they were 11-3.

Eli Manning (20 of 28 for 201 yards) threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Sterling Shepard on a 75-yard opening drive. He then iced the game with a 4-yarder that Beckham caught with his left hand and then pranced into the end zone for an 11-point lead with 5:20 to play.

COLTS 34, VIKINGS 6: At Minneapolis, Andrew Luck threw for 250 yards and two touchdowns, Robert Turbin rushed for two touchdowns, and Mike Adams forced a fumble and added an interception for the Colts (7-7).

Adrian Peterson had just 22 yards on six carries and lost a fumble in his first game back from a knee injury for the Vikings (7-7).

After a critical home loss to Houston last week, the Colts trail the Texans and Titans by one game in the AFC South.

CHICAGO – Ryan Hartman, Vinnie Hinostroza and Patrick Kane scored in the third period, and the streaking Blackhawks beat the San Jose Sharks, 4-1, on Sunday night for their fifth consecutive victory.

The division leaders in the Western Conference were tied at 1 when Hinostroza won a faceoff for the Hawks and Hartman whipped the puck right by Martin Jones on the stick side at 6:59.

It was Hartman’s first goal since Nov. 25 at Anaheim, ending an 11-game drought.

Hinostroza then got his third of the season when he shot it through Jones’ legs at 17:40 on a break with Marian Hossa. Hinostroza also scored in the Hawks’ 6-4 win at St. Louis on Saturday night.

Kane added an empty-netter as the Hawks improved to 13-2-3 at home.

Duncan Keith scored his first goal of the season in the second, and Scott Darling made 33 saves.

Joe Pavelski scored for San Jose, which had won four in a row. Jones finished with 22 stops.

when Keith drove a pass from Artemi Panarin past Jones from just inside the blue line at 16:49. Panarin extended his point streak to five games with his 19th assist.

Darling took over from there, improving to 6-2-1 in his ninth straight start since Corey Crawford was sidelined by an emergency appendectomy on Dec. 3. Aftermath of a big weekend of local basketball VIEWS Dick Goss When Patrick Cooper misfired on a 3-point attempt with about 10 seconds left in Saturday’s Alumni Night boys basketball game against Joliet Catholic, it appeared Lockport had fallen short in a tussle the Porters desperately wanted to win.

But Cooper was not about to give in. JCA forward Pete Ragen came down with the rebound, and Cooper, following his shot, managed to tie up Ragen and force a jump ball.

The Porters trailed, 45-42, at the time but had one more chance as the ball was theirs on alternating possession. This time, Cooper did not miss.

He knocked down a 20-footer with 3.7 second remaining, and the renewal of the rivalry in the old Lockport Central gym went to overtime.

“On the final possession of regulation, I missed a 3-pointer, but fortunately I was able to get a tie-up and was able to get the ball back for us,” Cooper told Herald-News correspondent Drake Skleba after the game. “On the final shot, I was wide open and buried it.”

With the momentum, which had changed hands on a few occasions over the course of the battle between evenly matched teams, now in Lockport’s corner, coach Brett Hespell’s team went on to claim a 51-47 overtime victory.

“This was a big win over JCA,” Cooper said. “We weren’t going to lose to them.”

Lockport senior guard Matt Smietanski scored the first points in the four-minute overtime on a putback with 1:43 remaining. JCA could not find the basket, and the Porters (5-4), who had trailed, 45-38, with less than a minute to go in regulation, put it away.

“I felt really good about scoring the first basket in overtime,” Smietanski said. “This was a great win for us with all the alumni coming back. All week long we heard, ‘Beat JCA, beat JCA,’ and we were able to do it.”

Smietanski mentioned one of the key factors in Lockport rallying late and forcing the overtime.

“Patrick [Cooper] and I were really strong on the glass in the fourth quarter,” he said.

Cooper had three fourth-quarter boards and six in the game to go with nine points, all of which came on 3-pointers. Smietanski had three of his six rebounds in the fourth quarter and overtime. Although he scored

As with any game, there was a winner and a loser. JCA (3-6) lost two road games over the weekend that the Hilltoppers could have won, especially the Lockport game.

“This was a very disappointing loss,” said Ragen, who led JCA with 17 points. “We should have won the game.”

Hilltoppers coach Joe Gura and assistant Dave Mondrella both had a long association with Lockport. It was a big night for them to return to the building where they had been part of so many great Porters victories. As disappointed as they were in the outcome, they had a special feeling about being back.

Looking ahead, the Hilltoppers and the Porters have established themselves in the early portion of the season as teams that can compete against good opponents. They may not have the horses to knock off elite teams, but if they can get to the point

where they can finish games consistently, both will win their share.

JOLIET CENTRAL ROLLING

Joliet Central’s 46-21 victory Friday night at Minooka left me with one prevalent thought: The Steelmen (8-1) are the most pleasant surprise in the area in the early going.

Central figured to be good, but this is coach Lawrence Thompson Jr.’s first season, and the expectation was it would take time for him to get used to his players and vice versa. That is an ongoing process, yet the Steelmen are playing as if coach and troops have been together forever.

Although Thompson readily admits Central has a long way to go offensively, the Steelmen are excellent defensively. They seldom are out of position, and when they gamble on a steal and come up empty, they have the quickness to recover. You won’t see many better defensive jobs anywhere than the one they dropped on Minooka.

Central’s only loss came against Minooka, 39-37, in the championship game of the WJOL Thanksgiving Classic. That one ended on Adrian Paige’s 3-pointer at the buzzer. This time, the Steelmen dominated.

While local basketball fans are anticipating how Joliet West will fare at the Pontiac Holiday Tournament and how Bolingbrook will do at Hinsdale, Joliet Central will be an interesting watch in the State Farm Classic at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington. The Steelmen are the No. 6 seed in a tough field, but despite a lack of size, they’re not a foe anyone will want to see coming.

Central’s tallest regular, 6-foot-3 Jose Grubbs, drew this comment from Minooka coach Scott Tanaka after he did such a solid defensive job on the Indians’ Jon Butler in Friday’s game: “Jose Grubbs is one of my favorites. I love his all-around game.”

Jaguars fire Bradley after the 4th-quarter collapse at Texans

The Associated Press The Jacksonville Jaguars fired Gus Bradley on Sunday, ending one of the least successful coaching tenures in NFL history.

Owner Shad Khan announced the decision following a 21-20 loss at Houston, in which the Jaguars (2-12) blew a nine-point lead in the fourth quarter.

Khan considered the move in late October, following a debacle at Tennessee on national television, but opted to keep Bradley for seven more weeks.

During that time, Jacksonville lost to backup quarterbacks Tom Savage (Houston), Paxton Lynch (Denver) and Nick Foles (Kansas City).

Bradley went 14-48 in four seasons in Jacksonville, the worst winning percentage (.225) of any NFL coach with at least 60 games.

The Jaguars were supposed to be considerably improved this season, time for Bradley’s always-positive

approach to pay off with a much-improved roster. Khan spent big in free agency for the second straight year and felt he had all the pieces in place for a playoff push. Even before the freeagent frenzy, Khan said a winning record was “everybody’s reasonable expectation at this point.”

Instead, the Jaguars have lost nine in a row. It’s the longest, single-season losing streak in franchise history.

“I don’t know, really, for anybody in this locker room how much more frustrated you can be,” quarterback Blake Bortles said. “Once again we had all the opportunities in the world, chances in the fourth quarter to score, and we just don’t do it.”

Bradley flew home on the team charter. General manager Dave Caldwell will name an interim coach for the final two games Monday. It’s likely to be offensive line coach Doug Marrone or defensive backs coach DeWayne Walker.

JOLIET – The No. 19 University of St. Francis men’s basketball team bounced back from a 63-54 loss to Cardinal Stritch on Saturday to capture a 93-91 overtime victory over Goshen College on Sunday at the Sullivan Center.

The Saints (7-5) used a 7-1 run to open overtime and led the rest of the way. Leading USF were Iain Morison (23 points, six rebounds), Logan Timmons (16 points, 13 rebounds), Jake Raspopovich (12 points, six assists), Jo Jo Ballestero (11 points), Jean Pietrzak (nine points), Landus Anderson (eight points, eight rebounds) and Jorden Thornton (eight points).

On Saturday, the Saints shot a season-low 28 percent from the floor against Cardinal Stritch. Morison led the way with 12 points and eight rebounds, Ballestero added 10 points, Dusko Despot had nine points, Anderson added eight points, Timmons chipped in with nine rebounds and Pietrzak contributed eight rebounds.

The Flyers won their fifth straight after scoring the most points in a game since 2001. Lewis (7-4) had more points than its opponent in both the second half (62) and off the bench (63). The highest daily intake considered safe by the Institute for Medicine is 4,000 units.

If you are taking vitamin D, have your blood levels checked. For the prevention of osteoporosis, the Institute of Medicine recommends a vitamin D blood level greater than 20 ng/mL (nanograms per milliliter).

The majority of people can achieve this level without supplementation, but if you do supplement, 600 units is more than sufficient.

As for all the other purported health benefits of vitamin D, such as its ability to decrease the risk of cancer and heart attacks, there may be benefit to vitamin D intake, but we’re not sure yet. We need good long-term studies that compare people who take vitamin D daily against those who don’t.

Until then, if you don’t have osteoporosis and you do have sufficient vitamin D levels in your blood, there appears to be little additional benefit to taking a vitamin D supplement.

Dear Doctor: Should I take large doses of vitamin D to prevent osteoporosis?

Dear Reader: This is an excellent question. Vitamin D appears to be a wonder vitamin in regard to health. For whatever ails you, it seems, vitamin D is the cure.

But that’s not necessarily true.

Vitamin D is so crucial for healthy bones that deficiencies in children lead to the malformed bones seen in rickets.

Because vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium, it’s vital for a host of other biological functions as well. In fact, vitamin D acts more like a hormone in that way.

The recommended daily allowance of vitamin D is 600 to 800 units. It can be found in foods fortified with vitamin D – and the numbers of those products seem to be increasing – or from fatty fish or eggs. But the majority of the vitamin D our bodies need begins with UVB light; our bodies use this light to produce the precursors of vitamin D. Adults who are out in the sun regularly and have normal vitamin D levels probably don’t need a vitamin D supplement. A meta-analysis published in the renowned medical journal The Lancet reviewed 24 studies that followed patients who took vitamin D. The research found little change in bone density with supplementation of vitamin D. Some studies found vitamin D reduced the risk of bone fracture – but only when it was combined with calcium.

Calcium on its own has been shown repeatedly to decrease the risk of fractures.

Vitamin D on its own has not been shown to decrease fracture risk.

In six spades, South should not be influenced by West’s lead into thinking that he has the spade queen. West’s lead is normal after any sensible sequence. The percentage play is to finesse spades through East because declarer can pick up queen-fourth. Win trick two with the diamond queen, cash the spade king, play a spade to the jack and, assuming the finesse wins and West follows suit, draw the last trump and claim.

The potential vendor/contractor remains responsible for obtaining all addenda to the original specification so they should check the specific bid page before submitting a bid to make sure they have received all addendums to a specific contract. Bidder will execute and file the Agreement and 100% Performance and Payment Bonds within 15 days after the Notice of Award.

The City of Joliet reserves the right to reject any or all Bids and to waive any technicality. Award will be made to the low, responsive, and responsible bidder. All Bids shall remain subject to acceptance for 120 days after the time set for receiving Bids.

Prequalification pursuant to Ordinance No. 7345 is necessary. Bidders are required to be pre-qualified through the Illinois Department of Transportation, the Capital Development Board or the City of Joliet. It is the responsibility of the bidder to ensure that their pre-qualification information is provided to the City of Joliet Purchasing Division prior to the bid opening. If bidders are not prequalified through IDOT or Capital Development Board, then they must be prequalified with the City of Joliet. Financial prequalification forms can be obtained from the City of Joliet website at http://www.cityofjoliet.info/departments/finance/purchasing/ prequalification-process. This prequalification MUST be renewed yearly. To check on your current prequalification status, you can contact purchasing@jolietcity.org. The current price for City of Joliet prequalification is $175, which offsets the costs for independent auditor review of the documents. Those documents are to be submitted to the Purchasing Division, City of Joliet, 150 W. Jefferson Street, Joliet, IL 60432 at least 6 days prior to the bid opening.
