2 airlifted, residents evacuated after Homer Glen explosion

aschier@shawmedia.com HOMER GLEN – Lisa Petty was on her way home when her father called to warn her that there were road closures in their Homer Glen neighborhood because of a gas leak.

Then she smelled the gas.

“It was very strong,” she said.

The leak caused a home to explode Thursday afternoon in the 14100 block of Parker Road, left two injured and affected the residents of about 12 to 16 homes.

The people hurt in the explosion – a father and daughter – were taken to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox and then airlifted to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood to be treated for burns, which authorities do not believe are life-threatening, Will County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer said.

Homer Glen Village Hall was filled with evacuated residents Thursday evening, who sat, talked and ate pizza provided by the Red Cross while waiting for clearance to return home.

However, it was unclear when that would happen. Nicor Gas representative Joe DelReal said in a news conference at about 8:30 p.m. that the source of the leak

had not yet been identified, but crews were working to isolate the gas flow and stop the leak. At the time of the news conference, the gas in the area of the explosion was still on.

Officials first learned something might be wrong about 1:30 p.m., when firefighters received a call about a gas problem at 143rd Street and Parker Road, said Todd Fonfara, deputy chief of the Northwest Homer Fire and Ambulance Protection District.

Nicor was called to the area at about 2 p.m., and authorities had already begun evacuations when the home exploded at 4:12 p.m. Fonfara said the home was a total loss.

Roads were closed around the home, and by about 8:30 p.m., the area of 143rd Street

and Golden Oak Drive remained shut down, Fonfara said.

The Red Cross had six volunteers assisting displaced people at about 8:30 p.m. at the Village Hall, volunteer Rachael Stevens said. Stevens said that more were expected to arrive as the night continued. The Red Cross also brought food, coffee and a heating station to responders at the scene of the explosion Thursday.

“I’m relieved that it wasn’t my home, my parents,” Petty said, “but I feel very concerned for the gentleman and his daughter.”

Petty added that as the night continued, she would consider going to stay with family in Lockport.

Lincoln-Way D-210 board discusses potential agreement with Aunt Nancy’s

fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – A familiar name came up at Thursday’s Lincoln-Way District 210 board meeting as a potential on-site child care provider: Aunt Nancy’s Child Care.

Superintendent Scott Tingley told the board that a request for quotation for on-site child care services was developed – as discussed at an Oct. 20 board meeting – and sent to nine companies.

Two proposals were received: one from Mary Sears Children’s Academy and the other from Aunt Nancy’s. Tingley recommended Aunt Nancy’s for being the more affordable option.

“If we decide to continue to use on-site child care, it would be my recommendation that we stick with our current operator and move forward with a three-year agreement,” he said.

The board approved proceeding with negotiations with on-site child care services with Aunt Nancy’s. Board Vice President Christine Glatz was absent.

Tingley noted the similarities that the agreement had with the previous one, saying that Aunt Nancy’s agreed to the $60,000 annual remittance to the district while Mary Sears representatives

couldn’t commit to it. He also said the day care fees by Aunt Nancy’s were lower than Mary Sears.

“I guess we’re at a place – we were asked to go out and see what the landscape looked like and we did. A number of those businesses chose not to put together an RFQ or a bid proposal,” Tingley said.

Aunt Nancy’s has been in the spotlight at the district before, as many residents were critical of its previous rent-free arrangement with the district. Residents also were critical of the annual remittance of $60,000 in an agreement that eventually was approved by the board in a 6-1 vote – $20,000 lower than what was previously discussed.

Board member Christopher Luchetti was the one vote against that agreement that was approved Aug. 18 because he expected a higher amount in the remittance.

After hearing Tingley’s recommendation Thursday, Luchetti said he felt the district should negotiate a proper deal moving forward.

He said the district should look at the costs and revenue in the new deal and ensure the district is properly compensated.

“All I’m asking is that we go back and negotiate. ... I think there’s room to go back and negotiate and make sure that we are getting the best and the proper deal for the district,” he said.

Wilco Center has prepared students for careers for 40 years

bokon@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – The welding laboratory at the Wilco Area Career Center was a loud and industrious place with students cutting steel on brick tables capable of withstanding 2,000 degrees of heat.

“Our instructors taught us well.

We don’t need them to hold our hands while we’re working,” said Ben Ibianaskas, a junior at Lemont High School.

With his welding mask raised and an oxyfuel torch in hand, Ibianaskas talked about the value of the skill, including the impression it makes on his résumé, even in interviews for jobs that don’t require welding: “They say, ‘Oh, you know how to weld?’ ” “It’s a difficult discipline. It’s not child’s play,” said Dan Favia, an assistant instructor in the welding and fabrication program that has 70 students.

Favia, a retired boilermaker with 36 years of experience, called the Wilco welding lab “a first-class facility.

It’s much better than the one I spent in my apprenticeship program years ago.”

The welding lab was a major focus of a $2.3 million renovation project at Wilco over the summer, which provided updated facilities and additional space for more students.

“We’re at an all-time high with over 1,100 students,” said Katrina Plese, executive director at Wilco.

40th anniversary

Wilco is in its 40th year as a countywide career center providing programs for high school students interested in developing skills for a future profession in 16 different areas.

Those areas include auto mechanics, culinary arts, nursing, early childhood education, fire science and game technology. Some of the programs, such as welding and fabrication, have been at Wilco since the center opened in 1976. Others are newer as career opportunities change.

The building renovations made possible the addition of veterinary assistance, which attracted 80 students.

“That’s a tremendous number for the first year,” Plese said.

The program has students with a variety of career goals, instructor Jennifer Alessi said.

“Some of them come looking at becoming veterinary assistants, and we

have some who are looking at the full eight-year program to become veterinarians,” Alessi said.

Finding career paths

The likelihood students attending Wilco will pursue education beyond high school marks one big change since the center first opened, Plese said.

“Years ago, the concept was to prepare students to go directly into the workforce,” she said. “Now, we know they are going to need additional training.”

What’s happened at Wilco reflects a workforce where people need more than a high school diploma, Assistant Director Elizabeth Kaufman said.

Will County Board OKs series of measures Weber Road enhancement contract approved

mmallory@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Will County Board was full of Christmas cheer and garb Thursday, but still took care of business in what was both its last meeting of 2016 and the first meeting for new board members.

The board unanimously approved an engineering services contract with Knight E/A Inc. for the reconstruction and widening of Weber Road from 135th Street/Romeo Road to Normantown Road in Romeoville at a cost of $2.5 million.

The 1-mile stretch of roadway will be enhanced as part of the larger Interstate 55 and Weber Road interchange project, slated to go to bid in 2017.

The board unanimously approved a bid to Pinnacle Flooring Co., of Tinley Park, in the amount of $370,000, for flooring renovations at Sunny Hill Nursing Home in Joliet. Several sections of the floor are in poor shape and becoming a safety hazard for residents and staff.

The County Engineer Search Committee ranked Jeffrey L. Ronaldson as its first choice for the job and Brent A. Porfilio as its second choice after interviews. Ronaldson is the division of transportation’s assistant engineer under Gould.

The board unanimously approved an increase in statutory Will County Sheriff’s Office fees.

It’s been 12 years since the last fee increase. A study by Bellweather LLC indicated that revenue drawn from the fees was not sufficient to cover costs of providing the services. The fees are for procedures such as serving subpoenas and summons. Cost

Rialto renews bank loan on USF renovations

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Rialto Square Theatre board and its bank have renewed a loan that some speculated would be called at the end of the year.

The original $2.8 million loan was used to finance the remodeling of office space for the University of St. Francis arts campus, which was moved into the Rialto building in 2009.

Rialto officials and a bank executive for months have said that the loan would be renewed.

But some in the community, including Mayor Bob O’Dekirk, had speculated that the full loan would come due at the end of the year and

The Rialto board approved the loan renewal at its meeting. The loan is paid through rent collected from USF. The Rialto is grappling with $571,000 in late bills and the prospect that the city of Joliet in 2017 will not provide the annual subsidy that has been used to fund theater operations for years.

USF is among several tenants who occupy office space owned by the Rialto.

Joliet man charged with death threats against former judge, police

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Joliet man faces charges of making phone calls threatening to kill a former DuPage County judge and blow up the Westmont Police Department.

Michael Kirollos, 30, of the 0 to 100 block of East Clinton Street, Joliet, appeared in bond court Thursday morning, when DuPage County Judge

Richard Russo set the bond of two cases filed against Kirollos at $250,000, according to a Facebook post by DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin.

Kirollos has been charged with three counts of threatening a public official.

According to the state’s attorney, Kirollos allegedly called the Westmont Police Department on Dec. 9 and left a message threatening to blow

up the department to kill Westmont Police Chief James Gunther and an officer.

On the same day, Kirollos allegedly left a message with the misdemeanor division of the DuPage County Courthouse, threatening to kill former Judge Mary Beth O’Connor.

“Public servants have a difficult enough job to do and should not have to worry about their own personal safety,” Berlin stated on Facebook.

“Any threat, real or perceived, made against a public employee or elected official will be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

An investigation into the matter led to Kirollos, who was at his father’s house in Joliet. On Wednesday, Kirollos was taken into custody by the Joliet Police Department after a brief scuffle. Kirollos’ next court appearance is scheduled for Dec. 27.

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A teen whose September arrest by Joliet police was recorded and posted on social media was found not guilty on Thursday of all criminal charges.

Dae R. Roberson, now 19, had been charged with resisting arrest and aggravated battery to a police officer after the Sept. 19 incident.

Roberson had been released from the Will County jail Monday after his trial was delayed for a day.

Although defense attorneys Robert Pervan and Greg Reeder were ready to proceed the next day, Will County Assistant State’s Attorney Steve Platek told Judge Amy Bertani-Tomczak that two police officers were unavailable to testify for the prosecution.

At 6:19 p.m. Sept. 19, officers arrived at Benton Street and Youngs Avenue to find about 20 people standing in the roadway, according to police.

Roberson allegedly ignored commands to move to a nearby fence and started walking away. As Officer Kent Liebermann brought Roberson to the fence, Roberson struggled and shoved Liebermann before he was taken to the ground, Platek said.

Pervan said a cellphone video shows the officer punched Roberson twice while the suspect’s arm also was being held by Officer Robert Campos. Police said at the time that Liebermann used “distraction strikes” to get Roberson to submit to being handcuffed.

A pocketknife fell out of Roberson’s clothes during the incident, but Platek and Reeder agreed Roberson had a legal right to carry it. Bertani-Tomczak, who decided the case as a bench trial instead of a jury trial, was shown the nine-second video several times as the attorneys presented their cases.

Platek said several shootings had been reported in the area of Benton Street and Youngs Avenue in the days leading up to the incident, and the officers would be expected to protect their own safety during a struggle.

“People’s rights and the Constitution don’t just disappear in a ‘highcrime’ area,” Pervan countered.

Roberson said he has no gang affiliations and testified Wednesday he did not try struggling with the police officers. Liebermann and Campos did not testify during the trial, but a transcript of grand jury proceedings was submitted as evidence.

After arguments were completed, Bertani-Tomczak said the prosecution’s case had “not met the burden of proof” and found Roberson not guilty.

“This was a great opportunity to have our client exonerated,” Reeder said. “It shows all of the differences people have had with law enforcement recently need to be resolved in a courtroom.”

Now that the criminal matter has been resolved, Roberson “may consider” a lawsuit against the department, his attorneys said.

The Valley View School District 365U Board has named Romeoville resident Victor Zack to fill a vacancy on the board created by the resignation of Chrystal Hansen, who has moved out of the district, the district announced Monday in a news release.

A broker for ASAP Realty, Zack is a White Oak Library District trustee and is active in the Hampton Park Social and Athletic Club, the Knights of Columbus and the Romeoville Historical Society.

He also is a graduate of Elmhurst College with a bachelor’s degree in business management.

Zack will serve the remaining four months of Hansen’s term.

Plainfield woman wins $75,000 in Nov. 11 lottery

We Care of Grundy County executive director In 2015, We Care provided rent assistance to 195 families and utility assistance to 163 families.

The money that goes to the Salvation Army from the campaign funds a new program, Pathway of Hope, which operates out of We Care by a Salvation Army case worker.

Fisher said they currently have 20 people working with the case manager, and that they’d like to add an additional case manager to the program.

“It’s life-changing, it’s a hand up so eventually they won’t need services,” Fisher said.

Fisher took the gold coins to the Morris Coin Shop, where We Care has taken them every year to be appraised, and found their value to be $585 each.

We Care is a nonprofit that provides emergency assistance to Grundy County residents in the form of food, rent, utility and prescription assistance.

Hope Marsden suffered from intense pain in her right knee. The bones in her knees rubbed against one another, making climbing stairs painfully challenging. Marsden’s family practice physician suggested she meet with orthopedic surgeon Dr. Tom Antkowiak. Cortisone injections didn’t help, so together, they decided that the best course of treatment was surgery. On Aug. 8 Marsden became the first patient to have partial knee replacement robotic surgery using the new Mako™ System at the Midwest Institute for Robotic Surgery at Silver Cross Hospital.

Marsden is no longer exhausted from pain.

“Since Dr. Antkowiak is highly trained to use the MAKO robot, he successfully eliminated my horrible knee pain,” said the 65-year-old Mokena resident. “In a few weeks, I was able to fully move my knee with no pain and walk really well.”

MORRIS – It’s the season for giving and once again a generous donor has dropped off three gold coins in the We Care of Grundy County and the Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign buckets.

For more than 12 years, an anonymous donation of three gold coins has been made to the two organizations during their annual holiday campaign in Morris.

“Once again, we got our three gold coins, and again First United Methodist Church volunteers were ringing the bells,” We Care Executive Director Eric Fisher said. “We’ve also received two silver pieces. We received one last year as well.”

He said that, over the years, many community members have wanted to know who the donor is. The only clues are that the donation typically occurs on a Monday night and at Jewel-Osco, where the First United Methodist Church is ringing bells.

However, one year the First United Methodist volunteers were moved to Wal-Mart and the gold coins were still dropped off at the Jewel buckets with different volunteers ringing. The donor wraps each gold coin in plastic and then wraps it in a $1 bill before placing it in the red kettle.

Fisher said that although the mystery is intriguing, he has no desire to find out who the mystery donor is. It’s part of the fun.

The Red Kettle Campaign is a national Salvation Army campaign, but the money raised locally stays in Grundy County to help area residents in need.

Fisher is concerned that they may draw in fewer dollars this year, because of the extreme cold weather conditions, which threaten the area and makes it unsafe for people to stand outside ringing the bells.

“We’ve had to shorten the hours at night already, and are looking at possibly canceling a few nights,” Fisher said.

Fisher said this year the money raised in the kettles is more important than ever after they found out their Emergency Food and Shelter Grant has been cut from $25,000 to $5,000.

“We are trying to have a good red kettle year to keep the program going,” Fisher said.

This year, they have added small red kettles throughout the county at area businesses such as Greenhorn Saloon and Casey’s Gas Station, as well as at other stores to bring in additional donations for those who don’t frequent Wal-Mart or Jewel, where the ringers are located.

The money raised is used for rent and utility assistance to those in need.

a great job.’ That was the concept when the center first started,” Kaufman said.

“If you ask most of our students, they are going to have some kind of college.”

One of the goals at Wilco, Kaufman said, is to prepare students for a variety of career paths.

“I’m planning on becoming a police officer,” said Michael Fink, a senior at Bolingbrook High School who is in the criminal justice and law enforcement program at Wilco.

Fink intends to go to Joliet Junior College next year and enlist in the military afterward before seeking his first job in law enforcement.

At Wilco, he is learning some practical skills, including how to write police reports.

“It’s like they say, if it’s not in the report, it didn’t happen,” Fink said, explaining some of the basics of police reporting. “It’s a lot of documentation.

You document what happened in case you have to go to court.”

Applying English skills to police work or science to welding are two examples of what Wilco always has done, Kaufman said, which is demonstrate to students how academic knowledge is used in the working world.

“They come here and see that in criminal justice there’s a lot of report writing and a lot of reading,” Kaufman said. “That’s where they’re putting their skills to work.”

Concerns over health care costs are shared not only by elected officials but by almost every family across the country. Many baby boomers are providing care for their aging parents just as they are facing their own health care issues. Delores Esther Austin (nee Muzzarelli), age 93, of Gardner, IL, passed away Tuesday, December 13, 2016 at Alden Estates in Shorewood, IL. Born April 2, 1923 in South Wilmington, IL to the late Gaetono and Ida (nee Bondioli) Muzzarelli. Delores was previously employed at the Joliet Army Ammunition Plant, Grinchuck’s Pants Factory, and Uniroyal. Member of the St. Lawrence Catholic Church in South Wilmington and the Caterpillar Retirees Club. Delores, along with her husband John, were known for making homemade ravioli for many people and a few restaurants in the area. One year they made over 3,000 dozen. Delores loved gambling and playing bingo. One of her favorite events was the Night at the Races in South Wilmington.

She loved spending time with all her grandchildren and great grandchildren and was an avid Chicago Cubs fan. Go Cubs Go! Surviving are two daughters, Sharon (Rodney) Ford of Gardner and Jona (Jim) Berta of Sachse, TX; four grandchildren, Toni (Patrick) Schaner, Teri (Quin Kevin) Ford, Austin (Isa) Berta, and Elyse Berta; four great grandchildren, Ryan Schaner, Kayle Schaner, Julia Kevin, and Jack Kevin. Preceding her in death was her husband, John William Austin, whom she married June 7, 1942 in Palmyra, MO; four brothers, Samuel Muzzarelli, Jerry Muzzarelli, Jimmy Muzzarelli, and Alfred Muzzarelli; and three sisters, Mary Densmore, Carrie Corneglio, and Lillian Christenson.

Start by understanding which brushes work best with your hair type, and choose one that will deliver the result you desire.

Synthetic bristle brushes are best for those with thick hair. They don’t create much static, and the stiffer bristles are better for detangling.

Natural bristle brushes, usually made with boar bristles, are very soft. Since they’re gentle, they are best for those with fine, straight hair, but they also work on curly or wavy hair. The soft bristles distribute natural oils to the ends of the hair, making it very shiny. You can also find combination synthetic/natural bristle brushes, which provide both detangling and shiny hair benefits.

A paddle brush is a good everyday brush, and works well for blowouts, especially for straight hair. It won’t create a lot of volume, but will help flatten frizz and add shine. It also gives a great scalp massage as you brush.

A vented brush is best during blow drying; it will speed up drying time, since the heat from the blow dryer can reach more of the hair.

Round brushes are also great for blowouts, adding a lot of volume and some curl, if desired.

They come in a variety of sizes; a smaller brush will give a tighter curl, and a larger barrel brush will give you nice waves.

A teasing brush helps you create little knots in your hair close to your scalp, adding a lot of volume for updos and other styles. A teasing brush is better than a comb, which can cause delicate hair to break.

Timothy A. Stachelski, formerly of Joliet, passed away from cancer with family by his side in Silverthorne, CO. on Wednesday, December 7, 2016.

He was a devoted husband and father. He is survived by his loving wife, Jen and his son, Christian McIntyre. His parents, Victor and Ronette Stachelski. Two brothers Victor (Kendell) Stachelski and John (Shawn) Stachelski. His mother-in-law Judy Sharpe and brother-in-law Dave Sharpe. Numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and his many true and loyal friends.

Tim was a graduate of Joliet Catholic High School, a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and the AV Manager for Keystone Conference Center in Keystone, Colorado.

Tim was an avid snow skier and loved playing club hockey. He enjoyed mountain hikes with Jen and his dog (Ianto.)

However, his passion was road cycling climbing mountain passes in Colorado. His enthusiasm carried him to conquer the mountains of Spain and Northern Italy.

Thomas R. Turner, age 69, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, December 14th, 2016.

CECIL F. UNDERHILL Born: August 22, 1942 Died: December 15, 2016

Sgt. Cecil F. Underhill died peacefully on December 15, 2016 at Joliet Area Community Hospice after a brief illness.

Born in Chicago and a longtime resident of the Joliet area. Cecil proudly served in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War and was the receiver of the National Defense Services Medal. He started his career as a butcher for Jewel food stores before successfully operating small grocery and meat markets throughout Joliet.

He most recently served as the food services director at the Will County Correctional Facility before his retirement in 2013. Cecil enjoyed traveling to visit family and loved sharing stories of his life, especially his time with the Lockport football team.

He was a devoted Chicago Cubs fan and will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Cecil is survived by his daughters, Dana (Don) Hendrix and Nicole Underhill; former wife and friend Diane Johnson; daughter-in-law Kayleigh; brother Michael; sisters Donna Jola and Mary Jane Minkel; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren and beloved nieces and nephews.

Joanne M. Lobraco (nee Mandarino), age 77, of Shorewood and formerly of Lemont, Cicero, and Chicago, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family, Monday, December 12, 2016 at the home of her son.

Born January 17, 1939 in Chicago, she was the daughter of Annunziato and Bridget (Gallo) Mandarino. In her early years, she worked at Kemper Insurance in downtown Chicago.

When her and James married, she became a homemaker raising their beautiful children and also worked several years in the Carmelite Gift Shop in Darien.

Joanne was a devoted wife, a loving mother, a beloved Nonnie, and a dear sister.

Illinois colleges face grant decision in budget uncertainty

SPRINGFIELD – Colleges and universities are again deciding whether to front grant money to low-income students who are supposed to be receiving state aid, as Illinois’ state budget remains uncertain.

A survey recently released by the Illinois Student Assistance Commission suggests some schools that covered grants in the fall aren’t guaranteeing to this spring, The Southern Illinoisan newspaper reported.

The commission administers the grants through the Monetary Award Program.

“It is important to note that institutions that are crediting student accounts for MAP or listing the award as pending are doing so with the expectation that they will receive payment for MAP from the state,” the commission said.

Dylann Roof convicted in S.C. church slaughter

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Dylann Roof was convicted Thursday in the chilling slaughter of nine black church members who had welcomed him to their Bible study, a devastating crime in a country that was already deeply embroiled in racial tension.

The same federal jury that found Roof guilty of all 33 counts will reconvene next month to hear more testimony and weigh whether to sentence him to death. As the verdict was read, Roof just stared ahead, much as Dylann Roof he did the entire trial. Family members of victims held hands and squeezed one another’s arms. One woman nodded her head every time the clerk said “guilty.”

Roof, 22, told FBI agents he wanted to bring back segregation or perhaps start a race war with the slayings. Instead, the single biggest change to emerge from the June 17, 2015, killings was the removal of the Confederate flag from the South Carolina Statehouse, where it had flown for 50 years over the Capitol or on the grounds. Roof appeared with the flag in several photos in a racist manifesto.

The shooting happened just months after Walter Scott, an unarmed black man, was killed by white police officer Michael Slager when he fled a traffic stop in North Charleston. Police shootings around the county have heightened tensions between black communities and the law enforcement agencies that patrol them, sometimes resulting in protests and riots.

In Roof’s confession to the FBI, the gunman said he carried out the killings after researching “black on white crime” on the internet. He

said he chose a church because that setting posed little danger to him.

Roof told the judge again Thursday that he wanted to act as his own attorney during the penalty phase. He also will face a death penalty trial in state court on nine murder charges.

In closing arguments, Assistant U.S. Attorney Nathan Williams mocked Roof for calling himself brave in his hate-filled journal and during his confession, saying the real bravery came from the victims who tried to stop him as he fired 77 bullets at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal church.

“Those people couldn’t see the hatred in his heart any more than they could see the .45-caliber handgun and the eight magazines concealed around his waist,” Williams said.

Defense lawyer David Bruck conceded Roof committed the slayings, but he asked jurors to look into his head and see what caused him to become so full of hatred, calling him a suicidal loner who never grasped the gravity of what he did.

The defense put up no witnesses during the seven-day trial. They tried to present evidence about his mental state, but the judge ruled that it did not have anything to do with Roof’s guilt or innocence. Roof was just imitating what he saw on the internet and believed he had to give his life to “a fight to the death between white people and black people that only he” could see and act on, Bruck said.

The prosecutor’s 50-minute closing argument filled the court with tension. At times, the prosecutor raised his voice, saying Roof was a cold, calculated killer. Some family members of victims dabbed their eyes with tissues, and jurors appeared emotional when Williams, after apologizing to them, showed crime scene photos of each person killed alongside a small picture of them while alive.

Newly passed 21st Century Cures Act is no panacea Will patients benefit from the passage of the 21st Century Cures Act? After listening to politicians and reading the headlines, most people might think it’s the best thing ever to come along for patients.

“A new day for medical research is on the horizon,” proclaimed Rep. Fred Upton, the outgoing chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, which had just won a major victory last week. “The House and the Senate have passed this bipartisan legislation, which will ensure our health system can keep pace with incredible advances in science and technology,” Upton said in the GOP’s weekly radio address.

“We needed to do better. And with 21st Century Cures, we will.”

Media headlines mirrored Upton’s victory declaration. Headlines like this from the Wall Street Journal, “House Passes Health Bill to Speed Drug Approvals, Boost Biomedical Research” seemed to say it all: faster drug approvals, more money for research and less pesky regulation.

Or was there more to the story? Not everyone thinks the Cures Act will be wonderful for patients. But their voices were drowned out in the slick public relations campaign Upton’s committee waged over the past few years using some 200 or so patient advocacy organizations to push for the bill. Most of those groups have strong

A recent study by Dr. Vinay Prasad, an oncologist at Oregon Health Sciences University, found that three-quarters of 68 cancer advocacy groups he studied disclosed sponsorship from pharmaceutical companies.

Some groups received money from as many as 16 or 17.

Prasad told me, “Ten years from now, someone with a cancer diagnosis will be worse off with this bill. People will be exposed to more things that don’t work.” Prasad and others say the Cures Act actually lowers the regulatory standards for drugs and devices.

It’s a step backward for patients.

In a nutshell, the act turns current regulatory practice on its head.

Randomized trials, the gold standard for medical research, may disappear if a drug company wants to sell a medicine for a different condition than the one it’s already approved for. Instead it can use “real world evidence” to show the drug also works for a new indication. Such “evidence” could be observational studies, which are less reliable than randomized tri-

als, but are cheaper and take less time.

The FDA can use patient experience to inform its regulatory decisions – information about the impact of a disease or related therapy on patients’ lives. The data can come from patients, family members, caregivers, patient advocacy organizations, disease research foundations and drug manufacturers.

The agency can approve new drugs on the basis of data summaries rather than requiring the FDA to independently analyze study results for a new drug indication. Drug makers would have to submit all their data, but the FDA would not have to review it. And although the bill authorizes billions for new medical research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the funding is not guaranteed, and the NIH would have to fight Congress for the money.

The Cures Act is the culmination of a 20-year effort by the drug industry and Beltway think tanks to loosen standards and permit new uses for drugs already approved in order to expand their markets. It can be traced back to the 1997 FDA Modernization Act, which was then – as the Cures Act is now – sold on the promise of getting cures to market faster. The 1997 law loosened regulatory standards and reduced the number of clinical trials needed for drug approval.

Are the changes brought about by

the earlier law a harbinger of what’s to come?

The reporting by John Fauber and his colleagues at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel offers a cautionary tale.

In the last few years, the paper has reported how drug and device makers have spent huge sums of money to sell drugs for conditions once thought to be part of everyday life.

The reporters found that drug companies turned conditions such as overactive bladder, adult ADHD, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder into medically treatable ailments. They reported that the latter was not even recognized as a mental disorder until 13 years after the first drug treatments were on the market. “Drugs used to treat the various medicalized conditions don’t work that well and often have side effects that are nearly as common as the benefit,” Fauber told me.

Are we turning the calendar back to 1933 when a book called “100,000,000 Guinea Pigs” was published exposing the dangers of patent medicines? Federal oversight of drugs was pretty lax then, and patients died. It’s obvious drug makers will benefit from looser regulation. It remains to be seen whether patients will, too.

JOLIET – The Joliet Junior College men’s basketball team does not take kindly to losing.

After the Wolves suffered the disappointment of Tuesday night’s 82-76 overtime loss at Daley College on the same day they were elevated to the fifth position in the NJCAA Division III national poll, they took out their anger on the Robert Morris junior varsity Thursday night at Wills Gymnasium.

Mitch Kwasigroch, a freshman from Lincoln-Way Central, scored a career-high 28 points, four teammates joined him in double figures and all 12 players at coach Joe Kuhn’s disposal scored as JJC rolled to a 109-84 nonconference victory.

“We were angry after the game the other night that we lost,” Kwasigroch said. “We wanted to come out tonight and show everyone we can play.”

Kwasigroch made 11 of 15 shots, including 5 of 7 from 3-point range. His teammates followed suit as the Wolves finished 43 of 72 from the field (59.7 percent). That included 12 of 20 (60 percent) on 3-pointers.

“I was feeling it, that’s for sure,” Kwasigroch said. “Sometimes you do just feel it, like everything is going in.”

ROMEOVILLE – It was the program’s best finish since 1981.

The Lewis University women’s volleyball team still feels giddy after its strong performance in the postseason.

The Flyers set a goal for their program last spring to make it to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight, and they exceeded their expectations.

Lewis beat defending champion Wheeling Jesuit, 25-17, 26-24, 30-28, to advance to the Final Four, but fell 2518, 25-16, 25-18, in the semifinals to topranked Concordia-St. Paul, who went on to claim the championship.

Now that Lewis got a taste of what the next level feels like, the Flyers already are ready to go back for more.

“I definitely think that we are hungry for more,” Maddie Seliga said. “We talked about our goals last spring, and our goal was to make it to the Elite Eight. We talked about what we had to do to get there. After being there and competing with those teams, I thought that we could be there every year. I think it motivated everyone to have the same goal and push to get there in the following years.”

After having countless successful seasons, it finally was time that the Flyers (29-8) made it to the next level. Lewis alumni started sending their wishes and told the players how excited they were for the team.

The players had support across the board. Nicole Yuede and Seliga agree that they felt the university’s faculty staff could not have been more cooperative; they worked with the players when they missed classes because of the tournament and always asked how the team was doing. After backing up their Flyers throughout the year, the athletic department and fellow athletes kept cheering strong. It is Lewis supports Lewis, after all.

The volleyball team received huge support in particular from the women’s basketball team. Coach Kristen Gillespie brought doughnuts in after the Flyers won regionals, and the entire team signed a card wishing them luck at the tournament. It was those little things that made making the tournament even more special.

“Before our regional tournament, our women’s basketball coach was talking about us winning regionals and hosting,” Yuede said. “When she talked about having to move her practice, she said, ‘Well when you guys win regionals, I’ll move all of our practices so you can host in our gym.’ Oth-

She was tweeting the entire tournament, and she was not the only one that was doing this, but she was one that stood out.”

One of the biggest supporters of the program over the past years is its coach, Lorelee Smith.

Smith had a huge year with her

team. Not only did her team make it to the Final Four, they did so in her 10th year of coaching.

For some coaches the Final Four is the highlight of their career. They made it to one of the highest levels of volleyball, which is out of grasp for a majority of teams throughout the country. It is something to be extremely proud of, but Smith is just like her players.

What makes the Flyers such a strong program is their desire and love for the game.

The loss to national champions Concordia-St. Paul left a sour taste in their mouths. It lit a fire under Lewis because now the players already are planning how to win that semifinal match next season.

“I’ve already had a few girls come in and asked me to give them the schedule of when the gym is open over

break so they can come in on their own,” Smith said. “This success has made them love playing volleyball even more. I’m really lucky to have a team that just loves volleyball.”

Top to bottom, the entire Lewis roster has a passion for the sport, and it will add a lot of talented and athletic freshmen to next year’s team. Four seniors – Yuede, Jenna Selby, Carolyn Nojiri and Danica Schreck – will graduate this upcoming spring.

This was a special year for Lewis where the program saw its hard work turn into results. Even though this is the year that it happened, each year has a similar story. A group of girls who love the sport come in and work hard to succeed. Another story repeats itself. The players grow each year.

“For me, the past few years have been a growing process, and not just in an athletic sense,” Seliga said.

“They focus on developing us into good people and good adults.”

“Coming out of this program made me a better volleyball player, but really I feel like a better human being in a competitive, teamwork and overall sense,” Yuede said. “Those are things you can use in all aspects of life.”

Army’s win from a dad’s perspective Mike Monken, 77 years young, was on the sideline behind the Army bench all afternoon, pacing.

Just what you would expect from a good father and former football coach.

Monken’s son, Jeff, guided the Black Knights to a thrilling 21-17 victory last Saturday, ending Navy’s 14year stranglehold on America’s Game.

“Jeff was kind enough to get me a sideline pass,” Mike said. “I couldn’t have sat there in the stands and watched it.

“Georgia Southern beat Florida when Jeff was the head coach there.

A I-AA team is never supposed to beat a good Florida team. He’s had some other big wins in his career, and all of that has been exciting. But nothing was like this one.”

Monken, a longtime coach at Joliet East and Joliet Central, and his wife, Nancy, have lived in New Lenox since they came to this area, and Mike became the East coach in 1972. In the fall, however, road trips dominate the schedule. They traveled to watch their sons coach football all fall.

Tom Monken was the head coach at downstate Casey-Westfield. But he is an insurance agent by trade and decided to give up coaching after the recently completed season. Mom and Dad saw five of his team’s games.

“The win over Navy was a fantastic ending for Jeff’s third season at West Point,” Mike said. “But even last year, when his team was 2-10, they lost six games by seven points or less, and two of them were with no time on the clock.

“It was heartbreaking for him, but at the same time, he told people that this thing was moving in the right direction. This year, he started with three great wins over Temple, Wake Forest and Rice.”

But after the Rice game, starting Army cornerback Brandon Jackson, a sophomore, was killed in an automobile accident.

“Everyone was heartbroken,” Mike said. “He was such a good young man, and what a pleasant smile. He had played in every game as a freshman, started in the last seven and started the three games this season. It was very hard for everyone to get used to

him being gone.”

Jeff Monken learned of his player’s death later Sunday morning. He got the team together and told them they would not practice that day, but Mike related that Jackson’s teammates said, “No, Brandon would want us to practice.” So, they practiced.

On the day of the funeral, the team members and 10 busloads of cadets made the trek to Queens, New York, for the funeral.

Jeff Monken is the oldest of Mike’s and Nancy’s children, followed by Susan and Tom. Jeff spent two years at Joliet East, and when it closed, he finished with two years playing wide receiver for his dad at Joliet Central.

“Jeff always said he liked football, but he and Tom had the same problem. I had to stretch him to get him to 5-foot,” Mike laughed. “I told him he should go into business. And he said, ‘No, dad, I want to coach.’”

He went into education (graduating from Millikin with an English degree and a minor in physical education) and then became another lifelong Monken coach.

Call it the first family of football coaches.

Mike and his four brothers all were football coaches. Brother Bob’s oldest son Todd, Jeff’s cousin, is the offensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Bucca-

neers. He previously coached at Southern Mississippi, where he received a coach of the year accolade, and also spent time with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Oklahoma State and LSU. Several of Jeff’s other cousins are football coaches as well, predominantly in high schools around Illinois.

Mike coached at five high schools in the state. He was at East from 1972 until 1983, then at Central for eight years. After he retired from coaching, then-Joliet West coach Dale O’Connell asked him if he would be interested in coming on board to work with the Tigers’ offense, while O’Connell coached the defense.

“So I did that for a year,” Mike said.

Mike’s brother, Glen, “is 81 or 82, and he is still coaching,” Mike said.

“He’s a volunteer coach at Mater Dei. He doesn’t get to practice every day, but he makes it most days. He just likes to be around it.”

As much as all the Monkens have accomplished in coaching, however, it will be difficult to top what Jeff’s Army team did last Saturday. That one afternoon forever will hold a place of honor in the Monken Hall of Fame.

Charitable weekend on tap for Plainfield hockey

dgoss@shawmedia.com The Plainfield High School Hockey Association provides a home for budding hockey players who are students at any of the four Plainfield high schools.

It would be a mistake, however, to assume that is all that matters to the PHSHA. This weekend, the organization’s other defining elements – volunteering and community service – will be front and center.

On Saturday, regardless of the weather conditions, the Plainfield hockey players will volunteer for Wreaths Across America by placing wreaths on veterans’ gravestones in Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood. The PHSHA collected money to buy some of the wreaths.

The ceremony begins at 11 a.m. and will be followed by the wreath placement.

On Sunday morning, players and their families will volunteer at MorningStar Mission, loading hundreds of bags of Christmas presents, clothes and necessities for needy families onto distribution trucks. Last year, the PHSHA loaded more than 1,500 Hefty bags onto the semitrailers that were distributed during MorningStar Mission’s Star of Hope campaign.

Finally, PHSHA has been collecting unwrapped toy donations for Toys for Tots. Donations still can be dropped off at Canlan Ice Arena in Romeoville. Toys will be presented to the Marines during the annual Toys for Tots game at 6:30 p.m. Sunday against Lincoln-Way West at the Darien Sportsplex.

“This is the height of our year with the big events this weekend,” PHSHA president Brian Patrick said.

“Between our being at Abraham Lincoln Cemetery on Saturday, at MorningStar Mission on Sunday morning loading trucks and playing the Toys

for Tots game Sunday night, it’s our big time.

“I wish the forecast was a little better – I’m dreading it – but we’ll be doing this all the same. We’re buying heat warmer packs and whatever else we can for Saturday morning.”

The Toys for Tots game is an annual event. The players skate out and present the Marines with the unwrapped toys that have been donated.

The players and their parents donate gifts along with the rest of the community.

“We sponsor the Toys for Tots game, and we ask our opponents if they would like to join us,” Patrick said. “Our league has really been good about it. We haven’t had anyone turn us down yet.”

Patrick has been the PHSHA president for three years. His son, Chris, is a junior on the Plainfield team.

“When my son was in eighth grade, he said he wanted to switch from club to playing on the high school team,”

Patrick said. “I’ve been involved ever since. I coached his teams for several years in club. I used to play a little for fun when I was younger, but he really fell in love with it.”

Plainfield plays its regular season from September to March in the Illinois West Hockey League. That is followed in the spring by the eight-week Darien Sportsplex High School Hockey League. It is during the Darien league where eighth-graders can join and see whether the high school game may be for them.

Plainfield graduated a large number of seniors after last season, so this qualifies as a rebuilding year.

“We just have a varsity team this year,” Patrick said. “Usually we have a varsity and a junior varsity. But it’s a growing year for us. We have a growing team.”

It is also a team that believes in giving back to the community and taking care of the needy this Christmas season.

Bucks come out firing, hold off Bulls rally in 4th

jcowley@suntimes.com MILWAUKEE – Give Bulls general manager Gar Forman some credit.

For the second consecutive season he’s managed to build underachieving mediocrity.

No easy feat considering the roster underwent a complete facelift in the summer, adding two championship players in Dwyane Wade and Rajon Rondo.

As Forman has shown the past three seasons, however, if it’s not broke he will kick it until it no longer can be fixed.

But the real trick that Forman continues to pull off? Through all the missteps, distrust and dysfunction he’s created throughout the locker room and within the coaching staff, he can walk through the halls with a swagger that reeks of “I dare someone to fire me.”

To his credit, no one in the organization has enough commonsense to dare do that.

That’s why Tuesday happens.

That’s why former Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau and his group of diaper dandy 21-year-olds overcame a 21-point deficit to run a suddenly disinterested looking team out of the United Center.

And that big response by the Bulls on Thursday? That flexing of pride that should have been on full display?

A one-sided laugher in Milwaukee in which the Bucks jumped out to a 30-18 first-quarter lead and only had to glance over their shoulder several times the rest of the night, winning 108-97.

It was the fifth loss over the past seven games for the Bulls, as all the good feelings from October and November have them sitting with a 13-12 record.

Even the injury card couldn’t be played against the Bucks (12-12), as

Rondo returned to the starting lineup after he was dealing with a sore ankle.

“It’s recognizing what we do out there that makes us successful when we go on good runs,” coach Fred Hoiberg said, when discussing the team’s split personality from game to game. “When teams go on good runs against us we have to find a way to keep battling, keep playing. It’s just finding that consistency and we talk about that daily.

“You have to keep your foot on the gas. You have to step on a team when they’re down.”

Sort of like Milwaukee did to the Bulls.

Sure, Hoiberg’s team at least showed a bit of life in the final five minutes of the contest, cutting the deficit to eight points. But with 1:34 left, Matthew Dellavedova – no stranger to being that thorn in the foot for the Bulls – hit a clutch 3 that stretched the lead back to 108-97. The Bulls had

several possessions to cut into it, but a missed shot and then registered their 17th turnover of the night to all but end any sort of heroics.

“The way we came out of the gate, you talk about the things that you have to do in order to survive a game like this,” Hoiberg said. “You’ve got to find a way to make a team uncomfortable.

“The meetings that we had the last two days, I would have hoped that we would have solved playing the half a game or three-quarter game. We’ll continue to stress it, we’ll continue to work on it, but we need to improve if we want to have a chance to win games this year.”

And the kicker of the entire evening. Nikola Mirotic – a player Forman insisted two years ago was a key core player moving forward – got the DNP (Did Not Play) Coach’s Decision.

“Just the way we went,” Hoiberg said.

NEW YORK – Richard Panik scored the tiebreaking goal with 6:13 left in the third period to lift the Blackhawks over the New York Islanders, 5-4, Thursday night.

Artemi Panarin scored twice on the power play for the Hawks, who lead the Western Conference with 44 points. Artem Anisimov and Marian Hossa each had a goal.

Panik’s eighth of the season gave the Hawks their fourth victory in five games and eighth in the last 10 meetings with the Islanders.

Scott Darling made 28 saves as the Blackhawks (20-8-4) rallied from an early 2-0 deficit.

Andrew Ladd, Casey Cizikas, Ryan Strome and Anders Lee scored for the Islanders.

The teams entered the third period tied at 4.

Lee scored his ninth goal of the season, and eighth in the past 11 games, to break a 3-all tie 22 seconds into the second. That followed a wild first period in which each team scored three times.

Panarin tied it 4-all with his second goal of the game at 19:41 of the second.

He fired his 13th of the season past goalie Thomas Greiss with Josh Bailey serving an interference penalty.

Strome tied it with his third goal when his shot from the point glanced off a Hawks defender before eluding Darling, making his seventh straight start in place of Corey Crawford, who had an appendectomy on Dec. 3.

Ex-Packer Sitton focused on game, not old team

Offensive lineman ready for matchup against Green Bay after missing Bears’ first meeting with rivals

pfinley@suntimes.com Josh Sitton is saying the right, bland things – that Sunday’s rivalry game against his former employer is no big deal – but it’s hard to imagine that being completely true.

Still, he’s consistent.

When he signed with the Bears shortly after the Packers made the three-time Pro Bowler the league’s most surprising cut at the end of the preseason, Sitton swore that it was a business decision. The left guard wanted to play in Week 1, and the Bears pounced first. It had “nothing to do with sticking it to the Packers,” he swore.

He maintained the same Wednesday, preparing for his first crack at the Packers. A right ankle sprain forced him to watch the Week 7 Lambeau Field matchup in a walking boot.

“It’s just another game,” he maintained Wednesday. “I don’t think too much about that. I’m not really that type of person in general. I don’t get

too emotional or get too high or low about anything. So it’s just the next game for us, a division opponent.”

But it’s more. Drafted by the Packers in 2008, he doesn’t need much of a scouting report this

week.

“I’ve been practicing against those guys for a long time,” he said. “But you watch film and you know what guys do anyway. It’s not an advantage or disadvantage or anything.”

Health will help him. Last week, Pro Football Focus ranked him the 21stbest offensive lineman in the league and called him the best pass-blocking guard alive. That’s despite him only playing 10 games – and finishing seven – because of the sprain suffered on the second-to-last snap against the Jaguars. He reinjured it against the Giants and returned to his starting job Sunday in Detroit.

“Any time you’re not out there, it’s frustrating,” he said. “You feel like

you’re letting your team down.”

Rookie center Cody Whitehair, one of the team’s most pleasant surprises, has benefited from Sitton’s presence.

“He’s seen it all, he really has,” Whitehair said. “He’s been in the league nine years. He brings that to the table and helps us with communication.

“He’s pretty even-keel, just like the rest of us.”

He’s trying to act even more laidback – at least publicly – this week.

“It’s good to have a guy in your building that’s been around a winning culture,” offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains said. “And knows what it’s supposed to look like.”

31 Nonprofit dance company pays tribute to Pearl Harbor survivors

BOLINGBROOK – The choreography was challenging. Meeting the survivors was awesome. That was the overall sentiment expressed by members of the Kinetic Dance Company in Bolingbrook.

Ten members of the 501(c)(3) organization took part in the Pearl Harbor 75th Commemoration on Dec. 7 in Hawaii.

“I learned about Pearl Harbor in school and always wanted to go there,” said Hannah Losic, 12, of Bolingbrook.

“So it was really cool to meet veterans from it.”

Participants were Hannah, Maggie Balas, Annie Butcher, Whitney Boyd, Cira Cattenhead, Ally Horn, Hannah Losic, Mia Peterson, Emma Reimer, Brooke Riemer and Lexi Sells. The entire trip was Dec. 3 to 9, including rehearsal and travel time.

The girls joined 108 dancers from about 30 dance groups across the country for three days of rehearsals with Bonnie Story, a nationally recognized choreographer most known for her work with “High School Musical,” said KimMarie Peterson, Mia’s mother and artistic director of the Kinetic Dance Company.

The Kinetic Dance Company is a resident nonprofit dance company of Dance Dimensions studio in Bolingbrook.

Offering a broad experience

KimMarie Peterson said her mission is to introduce dancers to educational and wider opportunities for dance not often considered, as well as to help them appreciate their freedom to dance.

“I don’t just teach them dance,” Peterson said. “I want them to see Broadway shows and know what it’s like to work in video or on a cruise ship.”

In past years, Kinetic Dance Company members have performed at the Orange Bowl in Florida – as a college dance team might – and at Disney World in Florida, where dancers also took lessons from Disney performers and experienced the routine of theme park dancers, Peterson said. Peterson said that Story had choreographed the dancers for the Orange Bowl. So when Story sent out the video of dance steps for the Pearl Harbor event, Peterson, who has veterans in her family, couldn’t pass it up.

“I felt we had to be a part of it,” Peterson said.

Since the dance studio holds classes Monday through Saturday, the girls attending the Pearl Harbor celebration had to rehearse the four Sundays before they departed, about three to four hours

“The videos weren’t as clear as they’d like them to be, but it was fun learning them,” said Maggie, 11, of Bolingbrook.

The company also raised funds throughout 2016 to help pay for the cost of the trip, which was $1,900 a dancer, Peterson said. About 80 percent of expenses were met through fundraisers.

“The most challenging part was making sure I had the choreography solid,” said Ally, 15, of Romeoville. “There were so many companies there; I felt a little bit intimidated.”

Emaley Losic, Hannah’s mother and Kinetic Dance Company program development manager, said that performing for the veterans was a great way for the dancers to honor the survivors’ service.

“America is so different today because of the sacrifices they made for us and the freedoms we have today,” Emaley Losic said.

Paying tribute

The days flew past in a whirl of re-

hearsals before the event and changes of costumes, hairstyles – such as “victory curls” – and uniform makeup for each performance, Peterson said.

On Dec. 6, the dancers performed an original choreographed piece by Peterson at the USS Bowfin at Pearl Harbor, Peterson added.

“Seeing their faces light up was pretty cool,” said Mia, 12, of Bolingbrook.

In an email, Emaley Losic said four of the five remaining USS Arizona survivors spoke, and some of the girls were able to meet and speak with them. In recognition for their performance, the dancers were presented with a U.S. flag that was flown over the Arizona Memorial on July 4, 2016, Emaley Losic said.

Then, on Dec. 7, the dancers performed the large group number at the opening ceremonies. Maggie said it was her favorite number because it was “the most energetic.”

“One of the girls went to shake the hand of one of the veterans and say, ‘Thank you,’ ” Peterson said, “but he

kissed her hand and said, ‘No, thank you.’ ” On Dec. 7, the girls also participated in the Pearl Harbor Memorial Parade, with actor Gary Sinise serving as grand marshal, Emaley Losic said. After the parade at the closing ceremonies, the girls performed another number by Story, Emaley Losic added.

“To stand amongst their peers and perform for a choreographer they would never be able to touch in the real world at the ages they are – that was just incredible,” Emaley Losic said.

One of the most exciting parts of the entire experience, Emaley Losic said in the email, was meeting Pearl Harbor survivors who stayed at the Hilton Hawaiian Village along with all the performers.

“Every day, the hotel was filled with people sitting around and listening to the stories of these heroes,” Emaley Losic said. “The gentlemen were very warm and encouraging of the girls to ask questions and talk about the fateful day in our history.”

Poster contest winners announced The HERALD-NEWS NEW LENOX – During the month of October, the New Lenox Fire Protection District (NLFPD) conducted a Fire Safety Message Poster Contest for all of the fifth grade classrooms in New Lenox.

The posters were based on the National Fire Prevention Association’s (NFPA) Fire Prevention Week Theme for 2016, which was, “Don’t Wait – Check the Date! Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years.”

All of the participants submitted their posters by Oct. 14. The posters were judged by the NLFPD firefighters and administrative staff the following week.

One winner was selected per school.

Each winner received two movie tickets along with a free pizza from Chicago Dough. This year’s winners were: Alexis Y. from Spencer Crossing, Gianna F. from Caroline Bentley, Lily G. from Nelson Ridge, and Cameron B. from Oster Oakview.

The primary mission of the New Lenox Fire and Ambulance Protection District is to provide a range of programs designed to protect the lives and property within New Lenox Village and Township from the effects of fires. The district also protects residents from sudden medical emergencies or exposure to dangerous conditions created by man or nature.

PLAINFIELD – Local artist Susan Winter won the Best of Show ribbon at the Plainfield Art Leagues, December, “One Night Show,” held at the Plainfield Public Library.

Winter won the award for her watercolor artwork titled “American Flag.” Judge Jim Bradey liked Winter’s color contrast, dark background and the emotion portrayed in the little girl and the flag.

Final month for photo contest

December is the final month of the inaugural “Preserve the Moment” photo contest launched by the Forest Preserve District of Will County on June 1.

Up to five entries a person can be submitted until midnight Dec. 31.

So far, monthly winners have been chosen for June through November. Once the December winner is picked, all seven monthly winners will vie for top honors, which will be chosen in January after online voting via the District’s Facebook page.

Prizes will be awarded for the top three photos after the online voting session concludes.

The HERALD-NEWS NEW LENOX – A New Lenox craft brewery and restaurant, Arrowhead Ales Brewing Co., swept a Southland competition of craft beers and pork dishes.

Despite strong competition at the Pints & Pork Challenge in Manhattan on Oct. 1, Arrowhead Ales Brewing Co., 2101 Calistoga Drive, swept both pork and brew categories, taking home seven trophies.

Crete’s Evil Horse Brewing Co., 1338 Main St., won the highest honor, the Judge’s Choice Best Brew for its Charging Bull Weizenbock.

Manhattan’s Roadhouse 52, located on Route 52 on the south end of Manhattan, entered two pork dishes, each winning a trophy.

The Pints & Pork Challenge teamed up restaurants with craft breweries.

The competition categories included best brew, best pork dish and best pairing. People voted for their favorites, as did official judges who are industry experts. WJOL’s Scott Slocum was the guest celebrity judge.

Because Arrowhead is a restaurant and a brewery, they entered both categories.

Arrowhead, which opened its doors in April, is offered the Jive Turkey Sweet Potato Ale as a seasonal item Mike Bacon is the owner.

Bacon competed against longtime brewers, including Evil Horse’s Steve Kamp, who is regarded as one of the leading brewers in the area.

Kamp has been a member of the American Homebrewers Association since 1984, earned the elite rank of Beer Judge, after passing a lengthy

exam administered by the Beer Judge Certification Program. He also has served as president of the Chicago Beer Society.

Both of Kamp’s entries from Evil Horse Brewing earned high marks from both the people’s choice and judge’s choice categories.

Roadhouse 52’s general manager Brian Eberle and newly hired executive chef Joel Harris entered two pork dishes, each winning a trophy.

Their entries also included a butternut squash puree topped with smoked pork and apricot thyme barbecue sauce; and pumpkin cornbread with maple glaze topped with smoked pork and crunchy jicama green onion slaw.

The pumpkin cornbread dish was paired with a Guava Gose Smack from Lombard’s Noon Whistle Brewing, 800 E. Roosevelt Road, earning the team the gold trophy for pairings.

Noon Whistle’s Guava Gose Smack also won the highest people’s choice award for best brew.

The other competitors were Granite City in Orland Park, 350 Brewing in Tinley Park, Irish Pig BBQ in New Lenox, All Rise Brewing in Chicago, Oak Park Brewing in Oak Park and Blue Nose Brewery in Hodgekins.

The Pints & Pork Challenge was hosted by St. Joseph Church in Manhattan as a fundraiser supporting the church and school. A few hundred people attended the inaugural event, which was moved into the gym because of rain.

Research shows statin use does not appear to increase cancer risk Dear Doctor: Does my cholesterol medication increase my risk of cancer?

Dear Reader: I assume you’re asking about statins, the most commonly prescribed type of cholesterol-lowering medication. These drugs, which work by lowering cholesterol levels in the bloodstream, generally are regarded as both safe and effective. They’re so effective widespread statin use, along with a decline in smoking rates and an increase in the use of cardiac stents, have helped decrease the U.S. death rate from heart attacks.

However, some research has suggested long-term statin use may have unintended negative effects, including an increase in the risk of cancer. This potential connection originated in now-dated studies showing lower levels of LDL, the so-called “bad” cholesterol, were associated with an increased risk of cancer. The problem with this line of reasoning is people with lower LDL might have more underlying illnesses that also can increase their risk of cancer.

Many older studies did not take that connection into account.

Furthermore, other studies suggesting a link between statins and increased cancer risk looked only at total cholesterol, which also includes HDL, the so-called “good” cholesterol. Lower levels of good cholesterol aren’t affected by statins and could be a separate risk factor for disease.

Take, for example, the case of smokers.

They generally have lower levels of HDL cholesterol, so their total cholesterol may be lower as well. In short, a lower total cholesterol number could be a red herring when assessing cancer risk.

It’s true observational studies have

More well-controlled studies point to the possibility of a slight decrease in cancers among people who take statins. One study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, analyzed data on more than 60,000 people who used statins and found a 15 percent decrease in cancer death rates compared to those who had never used statins.

In fact, many studies now are assessing the potential of statins to be used in therapy against certain types of cancers.

I have had many patients fearful of statins for a variety of reasons, such as worry about muscle pain or a potential increased risk of diabetes or cancer. Their worry may stem in part from a fear of taking a medication every day to prevent problems that currently don’t exist.

That’s understandable, especially when the patients currently feel healthy. But the fact remains: Statins decrease the risk of heart attacks and don’t appear to increase cancer rates. In summation, if you need a statin, you should take it.
