Early Automobile Garages – Aurora The automobile revolutionized American culture and society during the early 20th century. With the new availability of reliable and affordable automobiles, dealers began to see their sale numbers rise.

As automobiles increasingly became a common necessity for rural and urban life, many large cities developed a location where many automobile sale service center companies clustered.

In time, service companies and other business concerns that sold batteries, tires, and other auto supplies also sprang up within the vicinity of the commercial dealers. In most cities, the areas where auto companies and suppliers gathered were typically near downtown and along major arterial streets.

In Aurora, LaSalle Street, between Downer Place and Benton, is where the early automobile commercial center flourished. The buildings located on this block are fine examples of early 20th century commercial style structures. This stretch of LaSalle Street, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996, also was on the original Lincoln Highway route through Aurora.

Many of the commercial structures on the LaSalle Street Auto Row were constructed in the Victorian era, circa 1890. Many of the buildings reflect the style and materials of that time, namely limestone foundations, solid brick, load-bearing walls and decorative detailing.

Other buildings along the block were constructed between 1907 and 1930 in what is commonly known as the Commercial Style. These buildings generally are two to three stories tall with concrete foundations and solid brick load-bearing walls. Decorative details can be found in the limestone and terra cotta. To take advantage of the location, many buildings are built to the property lines and include sky-

Early 20th century automobile showroom buildings were typically one to three stories in height usually built of reinforced concrete, clad with brick and ornamented with stone.

These buildings also featured large first-floor storefront windows that allowed the passerby to see the floor models and often included large open spaces on all floors for the display of automobiles.

Constructed in 1907, Coats Garage, shown in the top photograph and located at 56 South LaSalle Street, was the first automobile sales and service building built on the block.

The building is three stories in height with a concrete foundation and solid load-bearing brick walls.

To hold the weight of the showroom floors, this building was constructed with large “I” beams that span the width of the building. It is believed that originally up to 30 cars could be stored on each showroom floor.

The building’s exterior features an orange-brown struck face brick on the façade and a decorative limestone block in the parapet carved with the word “Coats” for Coats Garage.

the original elevator that transports cars to the showroom floors for storage and servicing. In 1912, the Coats’ line of automobiles included the Chalmers, E.M.F., Hudson and Flanders models.

Another automobile sales and service building on LaSalle Street was Theiss’ Central Garage. Shown in the bottom photograph, the Theiss building was constructed around 1912 and reflects the Commercial style of architecture that was common in urban centers.

Like the Coats building, this structure also was three stories in height and constructed with sold brick load-bearing walls. Unique to this building, however, was the use of fireproof-reinforced concrete slabs for the floors and large rectangular windows at street level, both new techniques at the time.

At the ends of the building are bay windows extending through the second and third floors, which are separated by three recessed window bays located between them. An Otis elevator in the building once was used to bring autos to the showroom floors. In 1912, Theiss’ Central Garage sold Buick, Maxwell, Apperson and Baker Electric automobiles

CHANNAHON – Santa’s elves held the reins of their magical reindeer Saturday morning at Heritage Bluffs Golf Course in Channahon as children posed for photos with giant smiles as they pet the animals when they arrived at Winter Wonderland.

“I think it does fly,” said Sienna Manietta, 7. “It looks like Santa’s reindeer. It’s soft.”

Cole Joutras, 9, said he’d never been that close to a reindeer before, but he enjoyed it despite it being too cold outside for him.

Samantha Korzenecki and Sarah Doyle, both 9, thought the reindeer were cute.

“I thought he’d be bigger,” Sarah said.

Father publishes late teacher’s advice in a book

PLAINFIELD – Of all the advice Jim Brown’s daughter gave to her students, one piece stays in Brown’s mind: “Treat people the way you would like to be treated.”

Brown, of Naperville, said he believes in respecting people and living according to one’s values.

“Too bad people don’t do that anymore,” Brown said. “It’s always right when you do that.”

Brown hopes he can inspire youth to “dream big” and “be a person others can trust and count on,” words of wisdom his daughter also quipped.

They are included in Brown’s book, “Trip’s Tips: The Road to a Better Life.”

His daughter was Susan Cunningham of Plainfield, known to most people as Susan Triplett Cunningham. According to previous Herald-News stories, Susan, 47, a teacher at Plainfield North High School, was killed Oct. 20, 2015, in her home by her husband, Craig Cunningham. He then walked into traffic on Interstate 55, killing himself.

A candlelight vigil was held for Triplett at Plainfield North, which was attended by hundreds of students, co-workers, staff and members of the community, a previous Herald-News story said.

It’s easy to see why people loved Susan.

In the back of the clubhouse, a horse and carriage awaited riders to climb in for a short ride around the clubhouse.

While the horses didn’t seem to mind the cold weather, people huddled close together, bundled in layers to stay warm.

This year’s event introduced a blow-up snowglobe where children could climb inside while it inflated to give their parents an opportunity to take a photo of the life-sized globe.

Kristi commemorated Susan by sharing “Trip’s Tips” and writing her own version of the book, which guided Jim Brown in writing his.

Jim even incorporated the Archangel Raphael, a nod to St. Raphael Football. Susan never played football for the league, but Nick did, Jim said.

“I got the idea that Sue went to heaven, but that she’s still helping people from there,” Jim said. “That’s the approach I took.”

Jim said he’s probably given away more books than he’s sold, but he never intended “Trips Tips” to be an income source, which is why people can download the book for free on its website. Hard copies are available at Anderson’s Bookshop in Naperville.

In addition, Jim said he provided District 202 in Plainfield with many copies of “Trip’s Tips.”

“They can give them away to the people who need it most,” Jim said.

One can’t imagine the grief of Susan’s loved ones. But Brown said students and school staff softened that grief by sharing stories of how Susan inspired them.

“I was pretty moved by that,” Brown said.

So Brown, former president of St. Raphael Football and author of a book about football, took the advice of his grandchildren – Susan’s children, Nick and Taylor Triplett – to write a book about Susan and her tips.

Before he began, Taylor offered

some advice, Brown said.

“She said, ‘Don’t make it as boring as the last book you wrote,’ ” Brown said, referring to his book on football.

If Susan’s goal was to inspire people, the creating of the actual book showed she did just that. “Trips Tips: The Road to a Better Life” is a collaboration on multiple levels, and Brown credits many of those collaborators in the book’s introduction.

The actual 17 “Trip’s Tips” are 17 maxims Susan displayed and shared with students, Brown said.

As the air was let out, the two climbed from the back and talked about their favorite part of the day – cookies.

While Maddy said she liked decorating the cookies, Avery said she loved eating them even more than decorating them.

The annual event had fewer participants this year, but there still were plenty on hand waiting for 11 a.m. to have their chance to gather as many candy canes as they could during the Candy Cane Scramble.

The event is free to the public each year and held by the Channahon Park District.

Santa’s Cops event pairs officers with underserved youth

Shaw Media correspondent JOLIET – With a smile on her face, Jayla Anderson bounced from side to side, eager and excited to head into the aisles of Wal-Mart to find the top items on her Christmas wish list, as well as a surprise for her mother.

“I want a touch screen watch and books by Roald Dahl. I want to get my mom some chocolate,” Jayla said. “I’m looking forward to the best day ever because I get toys – who doesn’t like toys? Probably the Grinch.”

On Saturday morning, more than 80 children and the Joliet Police Department gathered at the Wal-Mart in Shorewood for the annual Santa’s Cops event, where children pair with a police officer and shop the store for themselves and/or family member with a $125 gift card.

Joliet Police Chief Brian Benton said this was year 27 for the exclusive event that the department sponsors and hosts during the year.

“We want to send a message that we care. Especially in the underserved community, the only time some of these kids see us is on a call,” Benton said. “This is such a feel-good event.

“My favorite part is having fun,

make it enjoyable, so it’s not just us taking toys off of the shelf and checking out. They get to see the personal side of me,” Joliet Patrol Officer Dwayne English said.

English said he has volunteered to shop with the children for 17 years, and he notices that the children usually fill the carts with toys, and then as they pass the clothes, say they really need a coat or maybe clothes for their little brother.

“It’s generous on our behalf, but you get to see the generous spirit of the children,” English said.

“It’s about giving back to those who are not as fortunate and need help.

That’s why a lot of our guys chose the police profession – to serve the community,” Collins said.

Joliet Police Sgt. Larry Collins said the children come from all over the Joliet area, and with the help of social service organizations, schools, churches and community centers, the children who need help with Christmas the most are chosen.

“We have had a rough year. We lost my youngest son at 2 months old in June. We moved from the city to Willow Brook, and I just want to have a normal holiday,” said Jayla’s mother, Lakita Anderson.

Between a $2,500 grant from WalMart and donations by local businesses, Collins said $14,000 was raised for the shop day, which was more than the average $10,000 in funds raised in previous years.

“It’s pretty amazing to see the generosity of our community,” Collins said.

Shorewood Wal-Mart Store Manager Kenneth Barger said he was proud that the Joliet Police Department picked that store for the event, which ends up being a good fit for everyone.

“This touches my heart. It’s amazing – they [the kids] are the winners in all of this. We just want to take care of the kids so they have something at Christmas,” Barger said.

I recall from past years that teenagers and young adults don’t always get chosen because they are harder to buy for, but they have just as many needs.

“It’s going to be extremely tight, not just meals for the holidays but every day,” Kinney said. “We are not seeing as much food and canned goods coming in.”

If you want to show some kindness, drop your change into The Salvation Army bucket outside just about any retail store. Hold the door for someone older than you. Instead of showing one of your fingers to the person who grabs a good parking spot out from under you, show some teeth and smile.

Last year, while I was visiting my family and hometown of Bay City, Michigan, there was a local story in the Bay City Times about people who leave hats, scarves and gloves hanging from trees and light posts in parks.

The warm weather gear included notes explaining they were meant for anyone who truly needed them.

I think that’s a wonderful definition of being an angel. Do whatever makes you feel good to help your fellow man, but just do something to earn your wings.

LOCAL BRIEF Fire damages barn in Shorewood

SHOREWOOD – No one was injured when a fire damaged a barn in Shorewood on Saturday night. Stations 1 and 2 of the Troy Fire Protection District responded to a fire at 11:45 p.m. at the Baltz Farm off Route 52 in Shorewood after a passer-by saw smoke, Station 1 Capt. Dave Giese said.

The fire was confined to the barn, which was a stand-alone structure for machinery,

Giese said.

Fire agencies from Channahon, Lockport, Minooka and Plainfield assisted with the fire because of the adverse weather conditions and lack of fire hydrants in the area, Giese said. The Troy Fire Protection District is investigating the cause of the fire, and the extent of the damage is unknown, Giese said.

Pay it forward. There is no small act of kindness. Do unto others …

These are not just words; they hold a lot of power, particularly this time of year.

Martial Arts Master Kyung Mun of Shorewood says one of the most important things his mother impressed upon him while growing up in South Korea was to treat others with kindness and respect and it will come back to you twofold.

Each Christmas when my sons were young, we would pick names from an angel tree, either at a church or from The Salvation Army tree at the mall.

We made it a tradition to buy gifts as a family to help kids and adults less fortunate than ourselves.

A few years back, my son, now a grown man, asked if as a family we could adopt a young adult for Christmas. This was someone he knew, someone who had just lost his mother, his home and seemed to be losing his way.

I was proud of my son for being so kind and grateful that as a family we could be helpful.

Growing up with four siblings, our gifts were mostly staples – socks, underwear, mittens and hats. There was always one toy to be sure. And Santa made sure to wrap each item separately so our tree always looked stuffed with presents on Christmas morning.

By many people’s standards, our meager Christmases were more than enough.

According to Jackie Kinney at MorningStar Mission, they serve holiday meals to 1,500 people through their Stars of Hope Christmas program.

That same program provides 12,000 Christmas gifts to more than 500 families in need from Will County.

It’s not too late to be someone’s angel.

Churches all over Will and Grundy counties offer angel tree programs. Galowich YMCA on Houbolt Road has one.

Minooka families have fun at ‘A Village Christmas’

Shaw Media correspondent MINOOKA – As the sweet voices of Mrs. Mariellen’s Preschool sang children’s holiday tunes among a row of brightly lit Christmas trees, Madison Condon and her brother, Mason, were first in line to tell Santa all of their Christmas wishes.

Skyler Markee, 5, also was excited to tell Santa her list, which included a Bright Eyes Pet and a FlipAZoo animal.

While the snow fell Saturday night, hundreds of people walked into the village of Minooka Community Room, which transformed into the North Pole with Santa, Mrs. Claus, Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer and Frosty the snowman.

“I love to see the excitement on the kids’ faces; they are full of excitement to see Santa,” said Laurie Musclow, the event coordinator.

For nine years, the village has hosted “A Village Christmas” to celebrate the holiday season. Santa and Mrs. Claus arrived at the village via fire truck at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, and Santa took his spot in his special chair. Children lined up to tell the big guy their Christmas wishes as parents took snapshots to commemorate the evening.

“I think this is awesome because we don’t have to go to the mall. Plus, it’s free and it really brings the community together,” Sarah Condon said.

The main community room was filled with cookies and cupcakes for the children to decorate with frosting and sprinkles, which were made by the Minooka Community High School culinary classes.

Holiday tunes played as families created memories in the holiday photo booth, and children snacked on cookies, popcorn and hot chocolate donated by the Minooka Lion’s Club, Minooka United Methodist Church, Heartland Bank and McDonald’s.

The Village Board room donned Christmas décor, and Mrs. Claus greeted people as the children made ginger-

bread ornaments she brought from the North Pole. Children also created place mats and bookmarks at the Minooka Three Rivers Library table, spun the Private Bank wheel to win ornament kits, and glued and glittered trees at the Grace Bible Church table.

Ellie and Faith Rupp of Minooka spent time with their dad, Noah Rupp, at the craft tables. Ellie, 6, and Faith, 2, made sure each piece of their gingerbread man was placed in the right spot, with a little bit of dad’s help.

“This is awesome. It’s fun to see the community come together. The kids are having fun – you look and the Santa line is long, the kids are making crafts and eating snacks,” Noah said.

Musclow said the event also doubled as a fundraiser tree silent auction donated by local civic groups, organizations and businesses.

The trees lined the community room and varied in theme from sports and vintage to baking, snowman or classic Christmas. Silent auction papers were placed, and 15 minutes before the end of the event the winners were announced for each of the 17 donated items.

Musclow said the money raised will be split between two local food pantries at Minooka Bible Church and Minooka United Methodist Church.

Sarah Ellen Binkley, age 34, of Joliet, IL, passed peacefully, with her family by her side, Thursday December 8, 2016 at the Joliet Area Community Hospice Home after a courageous battle with lung cancer.

Born on August 23, 1982 in Joliet, IL. to Richard A. and K. Robin (nee Ireland) Binkley.

Sarah was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church and the Church Choir. A Pharmaceutical Tech student at Everest College. Sarah was a bubbly, caring person and a very loyal friend who would help anyone in need. She enjoyed turtles, especially her pet turtle “Little Man.” Survived by her loving daughter, Rylee; Parents, Richard and Robin; brother, Scott (Danielle); and sister, Susan Binkley; nieces, Gabrielle and Isabella; many aunts, uncles, cousins and a host of many friends.

Sharon graduated from St. Paul’s grade school (1960), St. Francis Academy (1964) and the University of Illinois (BA English, 1968 and MA Speech (1969). She taught full-time at Triton College, was a volunteer teacher on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in S.D., worked in the family clothing store in Coal City (Ashamys), taught part-time at Joliet Junior College and retired as a City of Joliet parking deck employee.

STATE Democrat to try solving gun violence with sentencing

The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – The refrain is heard almost as often as the fatal gunshots: The way to reduce Chicago’s gun violence is tougher prison sentences for repeat gun offenders, keeping them off the streets and decreasing the city’s mounting death toll.

That idea, pushed by the mayor, police superintendent and others, shifts pressure from patrol officers of the city’s West and South sides to the Capitol, where legislators will consider how to balance law and order with finding alternatives to imprisoning young blacks and other minorities.

In that building, in the same Senate seat where Barack Obama launched his political career and focused on racial profiling issues, Democrat Kwame Raoul plans to propose legislation next month to impose longer sentences for defendants who previously committed a gun-related crime.

It’s a measure that has Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson’s backing, especially with the city topping 700 homicides a year after seeing 468.

Chicago man charged in attack, robbery of 94-year-old female World War II veteran

CHICAGO – A Chicago man has been ordered held without bail in the beating and robbery of a 94-year-old woman who served in World War II. Chicago police said Sunday that 26-yearold Olajuwon Claiborne was charged with felony robbery, home invasion and aggravated battery for Wednesday’s attack.

WLS-TV reported that the woman was waiting outside her home on Chicago’s Southwest Side for one of her daughters to take her to the dentist when she was attacked around 11:50 a.m. and her purse stolen.

The victim’s daughter, Judy Dusk, said her mother suffered broken ribs and a concussion. She was released from the hospital Saturday.

Dusk said her mother is a Navy veteran.

It was unclear whether Claiborne had a lawyer who could comment on his behalf.

2 South Shore Line rail projects poised for federal funding next year

MUNSTER, Ind. – Two projects aimed at improving the commute between northwest Indiana and Chicago are poised to make strides in the new year.

The South Shore Line is hoping for more than $400 million in federal funding to pay for about half the costs of both projects, The Northwest Indiana Times reported.

One project is the $615 million West Lake Corridor project, which would extend the South Shore Line south from Hammond to Dyer. The other is Double Track NWI, where an estimated $250 million project would add a second track between Gary and Michigan City.

“We know that when we make this investment, ridership will follow,” South Shore President Michael Noland said.

The West Lake Corridor project would include four new South Shore Line stations – two in Hammond, one in Munster and one on the border of Munster and Dyer.

The Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District, which operates the South Shore Line, hopes to start service on the new line in 2022.

Iran seals deal with Boeing to buy 80 planes worth $16.6B

TEHRAN, Iran – Iran’s flag carrier finalized a major deal with U.S. plane maker Boeing Co. to buy $16.6 billion worth of passenger planes Sunday in one of the Islamic Republic’s most tangible benefits yet from last year’s landmark nuclear agreement.

Iran Air’s deal for 80 jetliners is the biggest agreement Iran has struck with an American company since the 1979 revolution and U.S. Embassy takeover. It has the potential to transform Iran’s creaking and accident-prone aviation industry, which has been hobbled by years of sanctions.

Those curbs have prevented the country from buying new planes from Chicago-based Boeing and European rival Airbus, and in many cases made it difficult for Iranian airlines to secure much-needed spare parts.

Instead, Raoul said, he’ll propose directing judges to use the higher end of the sentencing scale when someone has a previous gun-related conviction.

Judges would keep their discretion in sentencing, but Raoul’s bill may require them to explain their rationale.

As is, someone with a previous felony weapons conviction faces three to 14 years; Raoul’s measure might have judges consider more than 10 years.

Currently, someone with a three-year sentence can be freed after serving half their term with good behavior.

“The question is ... whether [repeat offenders] are incapacitated long enough to create a breather for some neighborhoods that are just ravaged by gun violence, and long enough to create a deterrence,” Raoul said.

The deal covers 50 single-aisle 737 Max 8s, a soon-to-be-introduced version of Boeing’s existing narrow-body 737 line.

It also includes 30 777s, a wide-body, twin-engine plane typically used on long-haul routes that is popular with other Persian Gulf carriers such as Dubai-based Emirates. Half of the order will cover the 777-300ER version, while the rest will be of the 777-9 model still under development.

Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency said the planes would be delivered over the next decade. The first will start to arrive in 2018, Boeing said.

Priest who served Chicago, Quincy moves closer to sainthood

QUINCY – A priest who served in Chicago and western Illinois in the late 1800s is a step closer to becoming a saint.

Father Augustus Tolton was the first African-American priest in the U.S. WGEM-TV reported that his remains were exhumed Saturday from St. Peter’s Cemetery in Quincy. They will be examined for historical verification purposes.

Tolton was born a slave in 1854. His family escaped to Illinois, where he was a priest in Quincy and Chicago. He died in 1897.

Turkey blasts claimed

by Kurdish militants

ISTANBUL – Turkey declared a national day of mourning and paid tribute to the dead Sunday after two bombings in Istanbul killed 38 people and wounded 155 others near a soccer stadium.

The carnage was claimed by a Turkey-based Kurdish militant group.

The Kurdistan Freedom Falcons, or TAK, said two of its members had sacrificed their lives in the Saturday night attack that targeted security forces outside the Besiktas stadium shortly after the conclusion of a match.

“Two of our comrades were heroically martyred in the attack,” according to a statement posted on TAK’s website.

It described the blasts as reprisal for state violence in the southeast and the ongoing imprisonment of Abdullah Ocalan, the leader of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK. TAK is considered by authorities as a PKK offshoot.

Nigerian church collapses, 160 dead

WARRI, Nigeria – Mortuaries overflowed with bodies Sunday from a church collapse in southern Nigeria that killed at least 160 people, and worshippers said construction of the building had been rushed.

Hundreds had been inside the Reigners Bible Church International in the city of Uyo on

Saturday for the consecration of founder Akan Weeks as its bishop when the metal girders fell and the corrugated iron roof caved in.

Screaming survivors streamed out amid cries from the injured inside.

“There were trapped bodies, parts of bodies, blood all over the place and people’s handbags and shoes scattered,” computer analyst Ukeme Eyibio said.

Officials feared the death toll could rise.

Weeks and Akwa Ibom state Gov. Udom Emmanuel were among the survivors.

Bomb kills 25 at Egypt’s Coptic Christian cathedral

CAIRO – Sunday morning Mass was drawing to a close at the chapel next to St. Mark’s Cathedral, the seat of Egypt’s ancient Coptic Orthodox Church, when Magdy Ramzy said there suddenly was a “shattering explosion like nothing I had ever heard before.”

A bomb ripped through the chapel in the cathedral complex in central Cairo, killing 25 people and wounding another 49, mostly women and children, one of the deadliest attacks on the country’s Christian minority in recent memory.

The bombing of the Boutrossyia chapel – and another one Friday that killed six police – were grim reminders of Egypt’s struggle to restore security and stability after nearly six years of turmoil.

Trump calls Russian hacking ‘ridiculous;’ lawmakers vow probe

WASHINGTON – Donald Trump on Sunday called a recent CIA assessment of Russian hacking “ridiculous” and said he’s not interested in getting daily intelligence briefings – an unprecedented public dismissal by a president-elect of the nation’s massive and sophisticated intelligence apparatus.

Trump’s remarks come as key congressional Republicans joined Democrats in demanding a bipartisan investigation into the Kremlin’s activities and questioned consideration of Exxon Mobil CEO Rex Tillerson – who has close business ties with Moscow – as head of the State Department.

Asked whether he’s rejecting valuable intelligence on “Fox News Sunday,” Trump was de- Rex Tillerson fiant.

“I get it when I need it,” he said of the top-secret briefings sessions, adding that he’s leaving it up to the briefers to decide when a development represents a “change” big enough to notify him.

“I’m, like, a smart person. I don’t have to be told the same thing in the same words every single day for the next eight years,” Trump said.

The CIA has concluded with “high confidence” that Russia sought to influence the U.S. election on behalf of Trump. The finding alarmed lawmakers, including Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman John McCain who said Sunday he planned to put Sen. Lindsay Graham, a staunch Trump critic, in charge of investigating the claim.

McCain also has questions about Tillerson’s business relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin, although it’s not clear whether Tillerson will be nominated. On Sunday afternoon, Tillerson still had not been formal-

ly offered the job, according to a person with knowledge of the process who spoke on the condition of anonymity. Exxon steadily expanded its Russian business on Tillerson’s watch even as its rivals faced expropriation and regulatory obstacles. In 2013, Putin bestowed the Order of Friendship on Tillerson.

“Maybe those ties are strictly commercial and got to do with his business in the oil business. Fine,” McCain told CBS “Face the Nation.” And “we’ll give him a fair hearing. But is it a matter of concern? Certainly it should be a matter of concern.”

McCain wasn’t alone in raising questions about whether there would be enough blowback to sink a Tillerson nomination.

“Being a ‘friend of Vladimir’ is not an attribute I am hoping for from a #SecretaryOfState,” tweeted Florida Republican Sen. Marco Rubio, Trump’s former campaign rival and a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Pennsylvania Democratic Sen. Bob Casey said the developments “raise serious questions about whether the incoming administration will adequately stand up to Russia’s aggression.”

Trump said Tillerson’s relationship with Moscow was a selling point.

“A great advantage is he knows many of the players, and he knows them well. He does massive deals in Russia. He does massive deals for the company,” Trump told “Fox News” in an interview broadcast Sunday. He called Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Corker impressive, and said former bitter rival Mitt Romney still is in the mix.

Separately, Trump also rejected the CIA’s conclusion that Russia tried to interfere with the presidential election and blamed “very embarrassed” Democrats for the public release of the assessment. The Washington Post first reported the CIA finding on Friday.

“It’s ridiculous,” Trump said of the CIA’s assessment.

Militants retake ancient city of Palmyra from Syrian forces

BEIRUT – Islamic State militants recaptured the ancient city of Palmyra from Syrian troops Sunday, according to both sides in the battle, scoring a major advance after a year of setbacks in Syria and neighboring Iraq.

In winning back Palmyra, the extremist group appeared to be taking advantage of the Syrian and Russian preoccupation with Aleppo, timing its attack to coincide with a major government offensive to capture the last remaining opposition-held neighborhoods in the northern city.

Palmyra, with its towering 2,000-year-old ruins, holds mostly symbolic meaning in the wider civil war, although its location in central Syria also gives it some strategic significance.

Islamic State militants re-entered the city Saturday for the first time since they were expelled by Syrian and Russian forces amid much fanfare nine months ago. The government’s first important win against the Islamic State group in the historic city gave Damascus the chance to try to position itself as part of the global anti-terrorism campaign.

The militants had spent 10 months in Palmyra, during which they blew up a number of temples and caused other destruction – severing the heads of statues and partially damaging two temples and famous arch.

Maamoun Abdulkarim, Syria’s official for antiquities and museums, said his department had transferred the contents of Palmyra’s museum to Damascus, but that he still worries about the safety of the ruins from the IS militants.

“I fear they will be more vengeful,” Abdulkarim told The Associated Press.

Palmyra was a major tourist attraction before Syria’s civil war began in 2011.

Sunday’s takeover came hours after government troops and Russian air raids pushed the group out of the city’s perimeter. IS militants later regrouped and attacked from multiple sides, forcing government troops to retreat.

The militants went door to door, looking for any remaining forces loyal to President Bashar Assad, opposition activists in the city said.

Homs provincial Gov. Talal Barazi told the pan-Arab Mayadeen news channel that the IS attack on Palmyra is a “desperate” reaction to the Syrian government’s recent military “victories.”

Scores of Syrian troops reportedly have been killed in fighting around Palmyra in recent days. While a distrac-

tion from the battle for Aleppo, it is unlikely to affect the government’s final push on the last rebel-held neighborhoods in the northern city. By Sunday evening, there was no sign the army was shifting significant resources from Aleppo.

The government and its allies reportedly have mobilized almost 40,000 fighters for Aleppo.

“I don’t think the regime would withdraw forces from Aleppo to Palmyra and risk losing Aleppo,” said Rami Abdurrahman, the head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition monitoring group. “I think the regime’s priority now is to finish the battle for Aleppo before the end of the month for sure. As for Palmyra, the whole international community would stand by it against IS.” In the last year, IS has suffered defeats in both Syria and Iraq, losing several towns and cities it had captured in 2014.

It now is under attack in Mosul, Iraq’s second-largest city and the last major urban center it controls in the country. Since the Mosul offensive began nearly two months ago, Iraqi and U.S.-led coalition forces have killed or gravely wounded more than 2,000 IS fighters, said Lt. Gen. Stephen Townsend, the top U.S. commander in Iraq. He made his remarks at a news conference with U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter at Qayara air base in Iraq.

On Saturday, Carter announced he is sending another 200 troops to Syria to train and advise local fighters combatting IS. There are already 300 U.S. troops authorized for the Syria effort, and about 5,000 in Iraq.

A Kurdish-led Syrian force, backed by the U.S., also is pushing toward Raqqa, the group’s de-facto capital in Syria, from the north. Meanwhile, Turkey is backing Syrian opposition fighters who have reached the outskirts of al-Bab, the IS stronghold in northern Syria.

In going for Palmyra, IS picked a soft target to demonstrate that it retains the ability to carry out large attacks despite its battlefield losses.

Mohammed Hassan al-Homsi, who runs the Palmyra News Network, said IS was steering away from northern Syria, where Turkey and the anti-IS international coalition have focused their fight. The militants are eyeing new territory, and they chose Palmyra for its desert terrain linked to Iraq and its surrounding oil and gas fields, al-Homsi said.

The state news agency SANA, quoting an unidentified military official, reported that the militant group received reinforcements from Raqqa.

Recent days afforded a good opportunity to catch up on local basketball.

I saw Lincoln-Way West’s victory over Lincoln-Way Central on Tuesday night, the college doubleheader (women and men) between St. Francis and Lewis on Wednesday night, Bolingbrook’s win over Lockport on Thursday night, Joliet West’s victory at Plainfield East on Friday night and Minooka’s triumph at Joliet Catholic on Saturday night.

A few thoughts: • The question that is starting to come up is whether Joliet West (7-0) or Bolingbrook (6-0), both of which are ranked in the top 10 in the state, is better.

There is no doubt the two deserve to be ranked among the best. They both have all of the ingredients to make a run at a state championship.

From this vantage point, they are pretty much equals. They will meet in a nonconference game Jan. 24 at Bolingbrook. Maybe that will tell us something.

Then again, they likely will be in the same sectional, meaning a rematch in the sectional final would be a possibility. There’s a game everyone would want to see.

• Nana Akenten, who will play his college ball at Nebraska, is Bolingbrook’s main man. But Malik Binns is not too shabby, either.

• Joliet West, of course, has its two Division I-bound senior leaders in Teyvion Kirk (Drake) and Trevian Bell (Wisconsin-Green Bay). They are constants in the Tigers’ attack.

However, the supporting cast is

not bad, either. Tabyous Casterberry, the Tigers’ 6-6 senior center, has taken his game to another level, and two juniors, 6-0 guard Michael Smith and 6-3 forward Charles McKinney, are contributing off the bench.

And thanks to 56 points from the duo of Jessica Kelliher and Jamie Johnson, the Flyers captured a 74-62 Great Lakes Valley Conference home win over Wisconsin-Parkside.

He and Michael have done a very, very good job off the bench.”

Casterberry has gone up against quality big men already this season – among West’s victims was highly regarded North Lawndale, which the Tigers beat, 77-62, at UIC a little over a week ago – and has held his own.

“That’s probably made me a tad bit better,” Casterberry said. “They play well against me, and I try to be even better.”

West will be one of the top seeds in the loaded Pontiac Holiday Tournament. Regardless of where the Tigers are seeded, they will face some stiff competition. That should be fun.

Meanwhile, if you want to see the Tigers before Pontiac, they will entertain Lockport in a nonconference game Tuesday night.

in no small part because they have Jonny Butler.

Coach Scott Tanaka moved Butler to the post this season, and everything runs through him. It’s not only how many points he scores, but how often he draws the defense to him and dumps the ball off to a teammate for a bucket.

Plus, the Indians employ their deliberate style and play good defense.

Charging fouls that Antonio Milazzo and Aurelius Lennon-Rios took in the Indians’ 48-42 victory over JCA mattered.

• JCA (2-4) scored a big win Friday

night over Marian Central and was bidding for a weekend home sweep.

But the Hilltoppers fell a little too far behind Minooka early in the fourth quarter to make it all the way back.

JCA will need to make free throws consistently, rebound consistently and play good defense in order to win. Pete Ragen and Donavan Finch will have productive offensive nights, but the Hilltoppers are not the type of team to score points in bunches.

Lockport and JCA fans are anxious for a nostalgic night Saturday when the Hilltoppers visit on the Porters’ Alumni Night in the old Lockport Cen-

tral gym.

• The visit to Lewis to see the college doubleheader was a treat. The unbeaten St. Francis women won their game, 80-69, which was huge for the Saints’ program under coach Samantha Quigley-Smith. The Lewis men, who are getting accustomed to life without Max Strus, who transferred to DePaul after last season, got a 28-point effort from Delaney Blaylock in their 85-73 victory.

“Max was so good at creating shots for everyone else,” Blaylock said.

“Now I have to create my own shots and create them for others.”

Self-inflicted wounds, not officiating, main culprit in defeat Loggains again refuses to maximize Bears’ best weapon, Howard BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush There was a school of thought being advanced by fans and some media after the Bears’ 20-17 loss to the Detroit Lions on Sunday at Ford Field that the defeat was brought on by officials flagging the visitors for 11 penalties for 139 yards while Detroit was only penalized seven times for 55 yards, and that the Lions were treated better by the stripes than the Bears.

It isn’t true.

The Lions are 9-4 because they make fewer mistakes than the Bears, while the Bears are 3-10 in part because the Bears continually shoot themselves in the foot.

Some of it is coaching, but much of it is because the Bears are young and foolish, while Detroit is fielding a veteran squad that has learned how to win.

Penalties had a huge effect on the outcome of the game, but it was the Bears’ faults, not the officials.

Another factor in the Bears’ loss was offensive play-calling. Lions offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter is the flavor of the day in the NFL; the Bears’ Dowell Loggains is not.

MVP candidate, but he has played easily his two worst games of the season against the Bears. He has seven picks on the season and has thrown four of them – two in each game – against the Bears.

Stafford’s problems Sunday might have been affected by a dislocated right middle finger he suffered early in the game, or it might have just been the Bears’ defense, which appears to have his number.

Regardless, Cooter responded by having his 29th-ranked ground game run the ball 28 times for 114 yards and dominate the time-of-possession battle by more than 8½ minutes.

The Bears came into the game with the league’s 19th-ranked ground

game, eighth in average yards a carry, and Loggains elected to run the ball only 17 times, including Jordan Howard, his rookie of the year candidate and easily his offense’s MVP, carrying it only 13 times.

The Bears averaged 6.6 yards on Howard’s 13 carries; 5.8 yards on their other 36 plays.

The Bears’ three longest plays of the game were a 31-yard touchdown pass to Cameron Meredith, a 31-yard run by Howard and a 28-yard run by Howard, yet somehow it makes sense to Loggains to keep the ball out of Howard’s hands.

Loggains also has become quite fond of running a great deal of his passing game off play action. It’s an

effective strategy when you run the ball 40 times as he did last week, not so much when you only give the ball to Howard 13 times.

By the second half, the Bears’ play action was aiding the Lions’ pass rush more than it was confusing the Lions’ secondary.

Although there is no such thing as a moral victory, there was some good that came out of the loss to the Lions.

Howard and fellow rookie center Cody Whitehair continue to be studs, Matt Barkley again was impressive under center, receivers Cameron Meredith and Josh Bellamy both contributed some nice moments, and tight end Daniel Brown became a prospect to keep an eye on.

On defense, youngsters Leonard Floyd, Nick Kwiatkoski, Cre’von LeBlanc and Bryce Callahan all made multiple contributions, and Akiem Hicks had another solid outing.

One could even argue that the Bears got the best of both worlds Sunday, seeing youngsters on both sides of the ball continue to grow and offer hope for the future while still losing their 10th game as the Jets came back to beat the 49ers, strengthening the Bears’ grip on the fourth overall pick in the draft.

But it does get a bit more difficult each week watching the offense get set up to fail by its own game plan, and knowing the Bears did more to beat themselves than the Lions did.

Bears have lost three of their last four by less than a touchdown

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com DETROIT – Bears coach John Fox said during the week that what impressed him most about the Lions was their ability to win close games.

That also happens to be something the 2016 Bears can’t do.

For the fifth time this season and third time in the past four games, the Bears lost a game by less than a touchdown in a, 20-17, loss to the division leaders, officially eliminating the Bears from the playoffs for the sixth year in a row.

“It’s the little things that add up,” said Bears quarterback Matt Barkley, who threw a touchdown and almost drove the Bears to a potential tie or win in the final seconds. “When everyone’s

playing at an elite level in this league, you have to be elite to win. When we beat ourselves with penalties or missed balls or dropped balls or missed reads, those add up and can catch you at the end when every little difference matters. Just honing in on those little things.”

Despite trailing for most of the game, including a 13-3 deficit, the Bears had chances. Cornerback Cre’Von LeBlanc’s pick-six, the team’s first interception-return touchdown since 2014, put them on top, 17-13.

“Cre’Von snagged that ball, took it back to the house. It’s in our hands at that point, you know what I mean? We have to finish together, and this is not a pointing finger of blame,” defensive end Akiem Hicks said. “This is both sides of the ball, special teams, we

all need to put it in the pot and finish these games out. That’s what makes a difference between the team that’s three-and-whatever, and guys going to the playoffs.”

LeBlanc’s interception was the second takeaway for the Bears. Demontre Hurst picked off a deflected Matthew Stafford pass in the end zone, giving the team that hadn’t taken it away since Tampa Bay two created turnovers.

“That just shows you we’re this close,” Hurst said. “We could’ve finished it off with a third pick almost

In games decided by six points or less this year, the Bears are 1-5. The Lions, winners of five in a row, are 7-2 in such games and en route to their first division crown since 1993.

“I hate close losses,” linebacker Pernell McPhee said. “I hate any kind of loss, you know what I’m saying? I hate any kind of loss. We’ve just got to go back to the drawing board, go back to practice and work harder.”

Jordan Howard: The Bears’ rookie running back broke off runs of 31 and 28 yards en route to 86 yards on the afternoon (6.6-yard average). Both those runs led to points for the offense. Howard needs only 31 yards to hit 1,000 on the season.

Takeaways: After going 15 quarters without taking the ball away, the Bears intercepted Lions QB Matthew Stafford twice, including LeBlanc’s pick-six, which put the Bears in the lead. It was the team’s first interception-return touchdown since Week 3 of 2014.

They finished with 11 penalties for a season-high 139 yards.

Containing: The Lions were 6 for 12 on third down, and Stafford kept a few plays alive with his feet. The pass rush drew several holding flags, but didn’t get the Lions’ quarterback to the turf enough for all the havoc it was wreaking. The biggest breakdown came on Stafford’s rushing touchdown, the game-winner.

Sustaining drives: The Bears had the ball for 8:34 less than the Lions and reached the red zone on offense only once. They were 4 for 10 on third down.

Stafford’s heave to Jones: The Lions faced a third-and-16 in the middle of the second quarter. Stafford was flushed from the pocket and launched it down the field where WR Marvin Jones Jr. made a 48-yard reception. The defense did hold the Lions to a field goal, but that stop could have given the Bears good field position and kept Detroit off the board.

Meredith’s TD: Having not done much on offense since the first quarter and trailing by 10, Barkley took advantage of a 31-yard run from Howard to get into Detroit territory. He then threw a dime to WR Cameron Meredith on a slant-and-go for a 31-yard touchdown, getting the Bears back in the game.

Leno’s hold: This penalty negated quite the run-after-catch from Meredith, who had reversed fields and gained 27 yards, getting the Bears to the 16-yard line with 58 seconds left. Instead, the penalty on Leno nullified the play, and put the Bears in position for another hold (on Larsen) on the next play.

What now?

Record: 3-10 What it means: Another close loss for the Bears, who have double-digit losses for the third consecutive season, a franchise first since 1997-2000.

What’s next: The Bears return home to play the Packers on Sunday at Soldier Field, looking to avoid being swept by their rivals.

Stafford’s TD run leads Lions past the Bears

The Associated Press DETROIT – Matthew Stafford ran for a go-ahead, 7-yard touchdown with 3:17 left after throwing two interceptions in the fourth quarter, one that was returned for a score, and the Detroit Lions held on for a, 20-17, win over the Bears on Sunday.

“It’s fourth quarter, go time, you’ve got to make a play,” Stafford recalled thinking when he ran up the middle on the play designed for him to run. “I surely wasn’t going to slide on the 2.”

Matt Barkley completed two passes that put the Bears in a position to at least attempt a tying field goal in the final minute, but both were negated by flags, before turning the ball over on downs from the Detroit 44.

“You can’t really recover from two holding penalties back to back,” said Bears guard Ted Larsen, who was called for holding as was left tackle Charles Leno.

The Bears’ chances of pulling off an upset were also hurt by three penalties for pass interference for a total of 74 yards, helping Detroit score both of its TDs. The NFC North-leading Lions (9-4) have won five straight and eight of nine, moving them a step closer to winning a division title for the first time in 23 years.

“Our goals are much bigger than winning this game,” receiver Anquan Boldin said.

The Bears (3-10) have lost four of five, playing a lot of young players in place of banged-up veterans.

“Eventually, this is going to help us,” Bears coach John Fox said. “And this experience will help those individual players.”

Under center: Barkley, in the first road start of his career, perfectly led Cameron Meredith on a 31-yard TD to pull the Bears within three late in the third quarter.

He completed 20 of 32 passes for 212 yards.

Stafford, who put a white glove on his right hand during the game to protect his injured middle finger in the first quarter, was picked off twice after he threw only one interception the previous eight games. Demontre Hurst intercepted Stafford’s pass in the Bears’ end zone after it ricocheted off teammate Bryce Callahan and receiver Golden Tate early in the fourth quarter.

Cre’Von LeBlanc returned an interception 24 yards midway through the fourth to put the Bears up, 17-13.

Stafford finished 21 of 35 for 223 yards with a TD. Streaking: Detroit has matched its longest winning streak since starting 5-0 in 2011, and its best nine-game stretch since winning eight of the last nine games in 1995. The Lions have given up 20 or fewer points in seven straight games in one season for the first time since 1961.

Bell, Steelers drop Bills for 4th straight win The ASSOCIATED PRESS

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. – Le’Veon Bell scored three times and set a franchise record with 236 yards rushing in finding traction on a slick, snow-covered field, as the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Buffalo Bills, 27-20.

The Steelers overcame three interceptions thrown by Ben Roethlisberger to win their fourth straight and improve to 8-5 and keep pace in the AFC playoff race. The loss all but mathematically eliminated the Bills (6-7) from contention, and puts them in jeopardy of extending the NFL’s longest active playoff drought to 17 years – the longest since New Orleans ended a 20-year drought by reaching the postseason for their first time in 1987.

After scoring in the first half on 3- and 7-yard runs, Bell put the game away on the opening drive of the third quarter. He had nine rushes for 72 yards alone and capped the 82-yard drive by waltzing into the end zone from 5 yards .

Bell also had 62 yards receiving to account for 298 of the 460 yards gained

by Pittsburgh. It was the second threeTD game of his career, and first in which he scored three times rushing.

Bell broke the franchise rushing record set by Willie Parker, who had 223 yards against Cleveland on Dec. 7, 2006

BENGALS 23, BROWNS 10: At Cleveland, Robert Griffin III returned from injury but couldn’t keep Cleveland (0-13) from falling closer to infamy as the Cincinnati Bengals (5-7-1) built a big early lead and held off the winless Browns, 23-10, on Sunday in the snow.

Andy Dalton threw two touchdown passes to Tyler Eifert as the Bengals kept their playoff chances pulsating for another week.

TITANS 13, BRONCOS 10: At Nashville, Tennessee, DeMarco Murray ran for 92 yards and a touchdown, and the Titans held on to and keep a piece of first place in the AFC South. With the win, the Titans (7-6) also climbed above .500 for the first time all season.

The Titans came in with the NFL’s third-best rushing offense and the AFC’s top runner in Murray, and they ran right over a Denver defense that came in 28th in that category. By halftime, the Titans ran 26 times for 138 yards – the second-most rushes by any team in the first half this season and most allowed in the first half by Denver (8-5) since 2014.

REDSKINS 27, EAGLES 22: At Philadelphia, Chris Thompson’s 25-yard touchdown run with 1:54 remaining lifted

stered its playoff hopes by building an early lead and holding off Drew Brees and New Orleans for its fifth straight victory.

Doug Martin scored on a 1-yard run, Roberto Aguayo kicked three field goals and an improving defense intercepted Brees three times while holding the NFL passing leader without a touchdown pass.

The Bucs (8-5) have won five straight for the first time since 2002, the season they went on to win their only Super Bowl. New Orleans (5-8) entered hoping to tighten the NFC South race, but instead dropped three games behind division co-leaders Atlanta and Tampa Bay.

The Eagles took a 22-21 lead when Caleb Sturgis hit a 41-yard field goal with 4:59 left after holder Donnie Jones got the high snap from thirdstring long snapper Trey Burton down in time.

Carson Wentz drove Philadelphia to the Redskins 14 in the final minute, but Ryan Kerrigan sacked him to force a fumble and seal the win for Washington (7-5-1), which remained in the middle of a jumbled playoff race.

The Eagles (5-8) have lost four in a row and eight of 10 after a 3-0 start.

VIKINGS 25, JAGUARS 16: At Jacksonville, Matt Asiata scored on a short touchdown run, Kai Forbath kicked four field goals and the Vikings won for just the second time in nine weeks.

Asiata had a chance to score three times, but he was stopped on a fourthand-goal run in the second quarter and fumbled at the goal line in the fourth. Those mistakes hardly hurt against the hapless Jaguars (2-11), who dropped their eighth consecutive game and fell to 0-6 at EverBank Field this season. Minnesota (7-6) hadn’t won on the road since Sept. 25 at Carolina. A loss to the Jaguars would have weakened their playoff chances.

TEXANS 22, COLTS 17: At Indianapolis, Lamar Miller scored Houston’s only touchdown and the Texans defense stopped Andrew Luck on Indy’s final drive. Houston (7-6) retained a share of the AFC South lead with Ten-

nessee by ending its three-game losing streak.

The Texans won for the second straight year in Indy, have won nine straight against division foes and got their first sweep of the Colts in franchise history.

Luck drove the Colts (6-7) to the Texans 42-yard line with 1:24 left. But on fourth-and-1, a blitz forced an errant screen pass to Robert Turbin.

PANTHERS 28, CHARGERS 16: At Char-

lotte, North Carolina, Carolina’s defense forced five turnovers by Philip Rivers and had five sacks and a safety.

Cam Newton was a pedestrian 10 of 27 for 160 yards with one touchdown pass and one interception for Carolina (5-8), which snapped a two-game losing streak and kept its slim playoff hopes alive. Jonathan Stewart ran for 66 yards and a touchdown and Graham Gano had four field goals.

But it was Carolina’s defense that set the tone early against San Diego (58) – and later put the game away.

DOLPHINS 26, CARDINALS 23: At Miami Gardens, Florida, Ryan Tannehill threw three touchdown passes before being sidelined with a knee injury, and Andrew Franks kicked a 21-yard field goal as time expired.

The Dolphins (8-5) won for the seventh time in the past eight games and helped their bid to end an eight-year playoff drought. The Cardinals (5-7-1) fell further behind in the race for the final NFC wild-card berth.

Seattle’s Russell Wilson threw a career-high five interceptions and the Packers (7-6) won their third straight game to keep their playoff hopes alive.

They’re two games back of firstplace Detroit in the NFC North, but play division opponents in the last three weeks of the season.

Green Bay gained more than 300 yards in the first game for the Seahawks (8-4-1) without former All-Pro safety Earl Thomas, who is out for the season with a broken leg.

FALCONS 42, RAMS 14: At Los Angeles, Matt Ryan passed for 237 yards and three touchdowns and Atlanta forced five turnovers to beat the Los Angeles.

Deion Jones returned an interception 33 yards for a touchdown, and Vic Beasley forced a fumble by Jared Goff and returned it for another TD during Atlanta’s comprehensive pummeling of the Rams (4-9), who have lost four straight and eight of nine in their increasingly miserable homecoming season.

The Falcons (8-5), opened up a 42-point lead in the third quarter and stayed atop the NFC South with their fourth win in six games.

JETS 23, 49ERS 17, OT: At Santa Clara, California, Bilal Powell ran for 145 yards, including the game-ending 19yard touchdown in overtime, to help Bryce Petty and New York rally from 14 points down.

Petty threw an interception on his first pass of the game and the Jets (4-9) trailed 14-0 less than 5 minutes into the game. San Francisco (1-12) led 17-3 at halftime, but fell flat after that and lost a franchise-worst 12th straight game.

The Hawks’ Scott Darling made 23 saves in his fifth straight start while No. 1 goalie Corey Crawford recovers from an appendectomy. Darling has permitted only seven goals during the stretch, but the Hawks have scored only nine while going 2-2-1.

Devin Shore scored for Dallas, which lost its second straight and third in four.

Dallas’ Kari Lehtonen blocked 24 shots while making his fifth straight start.

The 37-year-old Hossa scored his team-leading 15th goal and has three in three games.

Hawks’ captain Jonathan Toews missed his ninth game and defenseman Brent Seabrook his second with upper-body injuries.

Both took part in the team’s morning skate Sunday, with Toews getting back on the ice for the first time in a week.

The center, reportedly dealing with a back injury, said he never has experienced his current condition before.

Defenseman Johnny Oduya re-

turned to the Stars’ lineup after missing 10 games with a lower-body injury and took Oleksiak’s place.

The teams played a scoreless first with only a handful of chances. Darling made a quick right pad save on Curtis McKenzie’s point-blank deflection with 6:30 left in the period.

Shore opened the scoring at 1:25 of the second, batting in a loose puck to cap an odd-man break and flurry around the Hawks’ net. After McKenzie deflected Shore’s feed wide, John Klingberg shoveled the puck in front to Shore, who connected from the doorstep.

Hossa tied it at 1 just 52 seconds later on a drive from left wing that trickled under Lehtonen’s blocker.

Anisimov knocked in a rebound of Ryan Hartman’s point-blank attempt with 7:30 left in the second for his 12th goal to put the Hawks ahead, 2-1. After leaving the penalty box and taking a long feed from Trevor van Riemsdyk, Hartman beat defenseman Stephen Johns and cut in alone. Lehtonen stopped Hartman’s low shot, but Anisimov swept in and scored before Johns could recover.

Panarin’s power-play goal midway through the third made it 3-1. Positioned low in the left circle, Panarin ripped in his 11th goal from a sharp angle – and just inside the left post – after taking a perfect feed from Duncan Keith.

Bulls roster shows it’s unreliable

Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg was recently asked if he agreed with the front office’s assessment from last season that Nikola Mirotic was a core player moving forward?

He eventually got to a “yes.’’

Eventually.

“I think the big thing that you continue to talk about it trying to go out and do the little things,’’ Hoiberg said of the third-year player. “There are things you have to go out and think about as making an impact when the ball is not going in the hoop. It’s confidence but you have to continue to make the little plays on the other end and try to make an impact on winning.

“You want to see the continued growth on the other end of the floor.

Again, more than anything it’s the team defensive concepts. For the most part we’ve been solid in that area all year when you look at our numbers.

Niko, that’s what he has to do is continue to work on the other end and eventually that offense is going to come.’’

Maybe, but will it come in a Bulls uniform?

Saturday’s 105-100 win over the Miami Heat put the Bulls at 13-10 through the first 23 games, but also continued to show how fragile the make-up of this roster is. Jimmy Butler scored 31, while Dwyane Wade had 28.

That kept Butler’s scoring average at 25.6 a game, while Wade was 20.2.

The next highest scorer is Taj Gibson at 12.1 and then Doug McDermott at 10.1.

Butler and Wade are scoring at a high rate because they have to.

There’s a reason why Wade’s practice schedule has been so limited lately. If the 34-year-old doesn’t stay healthy there’s a date with the NBA lottery awaiting this team once again.

Is Mirotic important to the rotation? Absolutely. But is the potential free agent a core player moving forward? The Bulls have very few of those right now.

Butler – The new face of the franchise is signed through the 2019-20 season with his player option, and is a top two-way player in the league. The organization opted to build around him, and that was one of the few smart decisions they made in the last three years.

Wade – A player option at $23.8 million next season will be interesting to watch, but Wade’s value to Butler, the locker room, ticket sales, the front office, and the coaching staff were worth the price tag, as Wade has been one of the best free-agent signings of the offseason.

Gibson – The big man is a free agent after this season, and will get a lot of attention elsewhere. The Bulls planned for that, drafting Bobby Portis as Gibson’s eventual replacement, but Portis’ struggles are crushing that plan, leaving a potential huge hole to try and fill.

Rajon Rondo – The only consistent point guard on the roster, and best towel thrower they have.

Robin Lopez – He’s not flashy, but his fiscally beneficial, signed through the 2018-19 season.

Doug McDermott – Has he lived up to the 11th overall pick in the 2014 draft?

No, but he is a key player moving forward, especially because of his outside shooting.

Cristiano Felicio – If his hands ever catch up to his footwork and strength?

Look out.

Denzel Valentine – The rookie hasn’t been able to show much yet, but Summer League and team scrimmages have opened some eyes.

Michael Carter-Williams – The sample size is small because of his injuries, but from a defensive standpoint he might be a must-keep. All eyes will be on this one.

Do adults need to get a chickenpox booster?

Dear Doctor: My daughter had the chickenpox vaccine as a child, so she never had chickenpox. She’s now an adult.

Should she get a booster?

Dear Reader: That’s an excellent question.

The chickenpox (Varicella) vaccination has been widely used in the United States since 1996. Given in a two-dose schedule at 12 to 15 months and at 4 to 6 years, the vaccine significantly has reduced the incidence of chickenpox among the population.

If your child had the vaccine 20 years ago, she indeed still is protected from getting chickenpox.

But – and this is concerning – she’s less protected than when she got the vaccination.

That’s especially important because contracting chickenpox as an adult can lead to an increased risk of pneumonia and even death.

Children in some pockets of the United States are less likely to have been vaccinated, and thus outbreaks of chickenpox occur.

This also is true for other countries with more spotty vaccination rates than the U.S. A 21-year-old may be more susceptible to getting the virus if he or she visits those areas.

The good news is that, in most areas of this country and the developed world, the vaccine significantly has reduced the circulation of the chickenpox virus in the population, so your daughter will be less

And you can take solace in the fact that, if your daughter does develop chickenpox, it probably won’t be as severe as someone who was never vaccinated.

That’s because she does have some immunity from her previous vaccination, so she will be less likely to get the severe complications that can occur in adults.

That said, there are many unknowns regarding what will occur later in life when your daughter is in, say, her 50s and her immunity to the virus has waned further.

Currently, neither the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention nor the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a chickenpox booster. That could change over time – especially for those people traveling to areas where chickenpox is prevalent.

We will understand more about the vaccine and its protective powers as this first generation of people who received the vaccine gets older – and as doctors and patients ask these important questions.

815-467-6380 Neil Kimelman from Canada has just completed his trilogy about bidding with “The Right Bid at the Right Time” (Master Point Press). The book contains more than 80 tough bidding problems, both constructive and competitive. After the reader decides what he would do, Kimelman analyzes the pros and cons of each possible call, sometimes gives the original full deal and has “lessons to learn.” In general, the advice is sound, but a few times he makes debatable recommendations.

I found one deal where he said that a penalty double of three spades led to minus 730. He did not describe the play, though, because declarer had a two-way guess for the club jack that he must have gotten right. If either defender had held the club 10, they would have been plus 200 for a nice score. (To be honest, the setting was a team game, not a pair event, when a close double into game should be avoided.)

In today’s deal, taken from a team event, what should North rebid over one no-trump?

While you are considering that, “Out of Hand, Out of Mind” by Bill Buttle (Master Point Press) is a book containing 141 color cartoons with bridge themes, some funnier than others, of course.

Back to the deal, North ought to rebid three diamonds (although three no-trump is feasible). This says that North is trying to get to three no-trump, but would like South to have some help in the suit and, preferably, hearts well held -- as he does here.

Finally, yes, I probably would have responded two no-trump, not one, with that suitable South hand, and hoped for the best in the black suits.
