Joliet City Council OKs pigs as pets Officials also approve ordinance to raise fine for using fireworks

mmallory@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Joliet woman won’t have to live without her pet potbellied pig.

The Joliet City Council on Tuesday unanimously approved an add-on to its animal ordinance to regulate the keeping of dangerous animals, exotic animals and farm animals.

Among the regulations for potbellied pigs are that they must be spayed or neutered, and males must have their tusks clipped and trimmed. The pigs cannot be outside without supervision and must be provided a fenced-in yard. They also can’t be walked on any public grounds without

a leash.

The ordinance proposed last month put a 125-pound weight limit on pet pigs.

But resident Joann Flannery’s pig, Tasha, weighs 200 pounds.

Council member Brooke Hernandez Brewer last month spoke against the weight restrictions at a Land Use and Legislative Committee meeting, pointing out that there aren’t weight restrictions on dogs.

The change in the city’s animal law came after the city received an anonymous complaint about a potbellied pig being kept at one home. The city notified Flannery that the presence of the pig violated the former animal ordinance, but no action was taken as city officials weighed whether to accept potbellied pigs as pets.

The council also approved an ordinance raising the minimum fine for the use of fireworks to $500, up from $150. It

was spurred by complaints of fireworks used in the city, and not just on the Fourth of July.

Fireworks are illegal in Illinois. The maximum fine allowed by state law is $750, and the ordinance allows for a $750 fine if a hearing officer deems it appropriate.

“This fine seems steep, but there’s been so many fireworks – and they’re not fireworks, they’re quarter- to half-sticks of dynamite – that just is ridiculous,” council member Jan Quillman said in the meeting. “It’s like a war zone every time there’s a holiday or celebration.”

Appellate court: Chicago man’s arrest in 2007 slaying in Plainfield was unlawful

bstanley@shawmedia.com OTTAWA – The appellate court has granted a Chicago man another chance to block evidence used to find him guilty in the 2007 murder of a Romeoville teenager.

Ricardo Gutierrez, 27, is serving a 68year sentence for shooting Javier Barrios on Oct. 28, 2007, outside the Meijer gas station near Route 59 and 135th Street in Plainfield.

Gutierrez’s girlfriend, Gabriela Escutia, also was found guilty of killing Barrios and was sentenced in 2014 to 45 years in prison.

While Gutierrez served a jail sentence in the spring of 2007, Escutia began dating Barrios, but the relationship soured and she obtained a restraining order against him, according to trial testimony.

Escutia, Gutierrez and another friend drove to the Meijer where Escutia walked over to Barrios’ SUV and shot him once through the chest.

When Barrios climbed out of the car

and ran into a nearby field, Gutierrez took the gun and shot him twice in the head, witnesses testified.

The order of protection led detectives to Escutia. Police used cellphone data to track her to Gutierrez’s house in Chicago, where both of them were taken into custody.

Gutierrez argued there was no probable cause to arrest him and any statements he made should be barred by the court.

In a decision filed Wednesday, Justice Tom Lytton said the arrest was illegal, and he ordered the trial court to hold more hearings to determine whether Gutierrez’s statements were tainted by that arrest or still are admissible.

Justice Mary McDade agreed with Lytton, saying police were wrong to arrest Gutierrez when they had no previous knowledge of his involvement and did not know of his existence until they found him with Escutia and her order of protection was insufficient evidence.

warranted and legally unjustified such that any ‘fruit’ derived from it should be barred,” McDade wrote. “This is still America, where federal and state constitutional principles inform and direct law enforcement activities. We do not live in a police state where law enforcement agents can descend en masse in the wee hours of the morning to awaken private citizens in their homes and take two people into custody – all without benefit of either a warrant, demonstrable exigent circumstances, or probable cause.”

But Justice Daniel Schmidt disagreed and said Will County Judge Carla Alessio Policandriotes appropriately had ruled when she allowed the evidence to be used.

“The fact that (Justice McDade) is unable to connect the dots between Escutia and the victim, as were the police, does not render the police action unconstitutional,” Schmidt wrote. “Neither the Fourth Amendment, nor any other amendment, prohibits police use of logic and common sense.”

St. Raymond church honors founding fathers, families with candlelight vigil, Mass

OLIET – The bells tolled at the Cathedral of St. Raymond Nonnatus as parishioners walked in a candlelight procession that honored the founding pastor and families of the church.

The parishioners were taking part in an event Thursday that kicks off the church’s celebration of its centennial next year. Leading the candlelight procession as the cross bearer was the Rev. Brad Baker.

Baker said St. Raymond parish is preparing to deliver a year’s worth of events that celebrate the past and the current community but also seek to welcome new visitors.

“We hope people will join us.

We’re really reaching out,” Baker said.

Many of the families who took part in the candlelight procession and the Mass could trace their lineage back to the founding families of the church, such as Richard Schuster, who received his Catholic education at St. Raymond.

“It’s fabulous the church is that solid, because some churches are closed,” he said.

Baker said the lasting legacy of the founding families is what makes the parish so rich.

“It is not only infused with new life continually, but it also has that rich foundation of generations of

The founding father of the church was the Rev. Francis Scanlan, who was an assistant pastor of the Holy Cross Church in Chicago.

On June 29, 1917, Scanlan received instructions from Archbishop George Mundelein to form a new

parish in Joliet.

By November 1917, ground was broken for a new church on Douglas Street. The church was completed and the first Mass celebrated Dec. 8, 1918, according to the church’s website.

Construction on a new cathedral began 34 years later in 1952 and

was completed in 1955. Scanlan said that when the church broke ground in 1917, “someday, there will arise on it a cathedral.”

“Just an amazing vision,” Baker said of Scanlan’s prophetic remarks.

Snow, arctic cold expected in coming week Know more

aschier@shawmedia.com Will County’s forecast for the coming week is predicted to be snow, snow, snow, cold.

Meteorologist Ed Fenelon said there are three significant snow events expected for the area in the coming week, followed by an arctic front.

The snowfall will begin Saturday afternoon and continue into the night, yielding 2 to 4 inches, said Fenelon, of the National Weather Service in Romeoville. The second event is projected to start Sunday evening, go until Monday morning and drop another 2 to 4 inches with the possibility for more.

Fenelon anticipates the third will begin during the day Tuesday and continue until that evening, yielding at least 2 inches.

LOCAL BRIEF Crest Hill man had heroin, cocaine, marijuana in car

AURORA – After a Crest Hill man was arrested Tuesday morning, police found large amounts of heroin, cocaine and marijuana in his car.

According to information provided by the Aurora Police Department, Ado D. Autman, 28, was driving a 2015 Jeep Cherokee at 7:45 a.m. when he pulled out in front of a patrol officer at Fox Pointe and Mair drives in Aurora.

Police said Autman, of the 1300 block of Pioneer Ado D. Autman Road, has a suspended license and was driving without insurance.

“When his vehicle was [searched], a backpack ... containing over 300 grams of heroin, 100 grams of cocaine and one pound of cannabis were found,” police stated in a news release. “The narcotics have a street value of around $50,000.”

Autman also had $1,885 in his pockets, according to police. Autman was charged with two counts of drug possession and one count of delivery of marijuana. He was released from police custody after posting a $90,000 bond.

Will County jail records indicate Autman was arrested in January 2015 on a charge of delivery of drugs by Bolingbrook police and arrested in September this year for allegedly fleeing from Joliet police and committing several traffic violations.

Fenelon said all three events are expected to drop dry, powdery snow.

He noted the snow predicted for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday is far enough in the future that people should continue to monitor weather reports for a more accurate forecast closer to when the snowfall is expected.

Fenelon also projected an arctic front Tuesday with temperatures dropping be-

low zero and only rising as high as 10 or 15 degrees Wednesday and Thursday.

“This kind of cold is more typical of January than December,” he said.

The predicted temperatures for the middle of next week are 20 to 25 degrees below average, Fenelon said, and they would come after a November with higher-than-usual temperatures.

“It’s just a really fast transition to winter,” he said.

Will County Emergency Management Agency Director Harold Damron said the National Weather Service has not yet given the agency any indications of severe conditions, but that shouldn’t discourage people from preparing for travel limitations, cold weather and loss of utilities.

“A little bit of preparation goes a long way,” he said.

Joliet parking ban As more than 2 inches of snow are expected Saturday, the city of Joliet’s snow parking ban likely will be in effect, according to a city news release.

All vehicles must be moved off of public streets until the city’s snowplows have had a chance to go through.

The roadways division intends to have all streets clear 12 to 18 hours after the snow stops falling.

Vehicles in violation may be ticketed or towed.

D-365U’s high lead levels a plumbing issue 14 contaminated water sources have been taken offline, will be replaced The HERALD–NEWS Valley View Community School District 365U officials have clarified a water quality study made public Wednesday, stating the lead levels identified in the report that exceed federal standards are the result of issues with interior plumbing fixtures or piping.

Mike Lopez,Valley View facilities director, said that the high lead levels identified in the report at three of the district’s facilities were the result of

interior plumbing fixtures or piping and not the municipal water supply in Romeoville or Bolingbrook, according to a news release.

District officials said that testing of 334 water sources districtwide showed lead levels were safe by federal standards at Bolingbrook High School, four of the five middle schools, every elementary school, the administration center complex, the transportation center and the maintenance center.

Ten water sources at Romeoville High School, one at Brooks Middle School and three at the district’s print shop exceeded the standard, according to the district.

All 14 of those water sources have been taken offline and will be replaced.

Lopez stated in the news release that lead enters drinking water primarily as a result of corrosion of interior plumbing materials containing lead.

These materials include leadbased solder used to join copper piping as well as brass and chrome-plated brass faucets, according to the news release.

When water stands for several hours in lead pipes or plumbing systems containing lead, the lead sometimes dissolves into the drinking water.

The Environmental Protection Agency has indicated that lead in drinking water rarely is the sole cause of lead poisoning.

Judge: Teenager will be charged as adult in murder case

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Romeoville teen’s murder case will return to being tried in the adult courts, a judge ruled Wednesday.

Adam Ballard, now 17, was 15 when he was charged as an adult in the death of Richard Pollack during a street brawl Aug. 10, 2014. His father, Mark Ballard, 44, also is charged with murder in Pollack’s death.

Adam Ballard was charged as an adult when he first was arrested. In September, attorney Paul Napolski

asked Judge Amy Bertani-Tomczak to send Adam Ballard’s case to the juvenile division for a hearing to see if the case should be kept there.

Since 2014, state law has changed to make age 16 the automatic upgrade for criminal proceedings.

At the time of the initial arrest, it was 15. Napolski argued to juvenile Judge Paula Gomora that the change in the law is retroactive.

Adults convicted of first-degree murder face a minimum 20-year sentence, but juvenile penalties often are much less, and Adam Ballard could’ve been released at age 21.

After hearing arguments, Gomora decided the juvenile court would not keep the case. Adam Ballard now must be indicted as an adult for a second time, which Napolski said likely would happen before his father’s next court appearance in January.

Adam Ballard is being held in the River Valley Juvenile Detention Center in Joliet.

The Ballards allegedly used a baseball bat while fighting with Pollack, 55, in the 400 block of Tallman Avenue in Romeoville.

Napolski said they were acting in self-defense during the brawl.

Plainfield board OKs tax levy

mmallory@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – The Plainfield Village Board has approved the 2016 tax levy.

Based on preliminary equalized assessed value estimates, a total property tax request of $6.14 million was approved. The dollar amount the village is anticipated to receive, however, would be less.

No members of the public spoke at the tax levy public hearing before the vote.

Plainfield Director of Management Services Traci Pleckham said in a video of the Monday board meeting the village posted to YouTube that when the official EAV is determined in March, the levy total likely would be $5.8 million to $5.9 million if the village maintains the same 0.4669 levy rate it has had the past four years.

Trustee Ed O’Rourke said village officials had discussed in budget talks whether maintaining the 0.4669 levy rate is appropriate given that most residents will get a higher tax bill because of a projected 4 percent EAV increase on average.

“What we’re hearing right now from the county is the average is going to hover at 4 percent,” Pleckham said in the video.

Trustee Bill Lamb cautioned against too much of a levy decrease because the state of Illinois still doesn’t have a budget, and it’s difficult to count on the payments it owes municipalities.

Early in the meeting, Trustee Garrett Peck said he was not going to vote in favor of the levy because he didn’t want to see any raises in property taxes for Plainfield residents.

Peck said he and Village Administrator Brian Murphy have discussed ways

to save residents money.

Based on talks with Murphy, Peck proposed that the village decrease a capital charge on resident water bills to create savings.

Later in the meeting, Peck said the water bill capital charge decrease is something people will notice more than a property tax decrease.

If the village decreases its portion of a property tax bill, he said, there’s still a chance other taxing bodies will raise their taxes, thus keeping overall tax bills as high, if not higher, than the previous year.

“They’re going to receive a water bill from us and see that it’s slightly smaller,” Peck said in the video. “It’s not going to be much, but it’s going to be something.”

Trustees were not opposed to Peck’s proposal. Trustee Brian Wojowski said it doesn’t matter which pot the cost savings comes from – he’s all for saving.

“Any cuts we make will be eaten up by the other taxing bodies,” Wojowski said in the video. “I think this is a unique way for the residents to see their taxes are actually being cut.”

Pleckham said bond issuance will not prevent the village from decreasing the water bill capital charge. No action was taken Monday on the capital charge.

project to come back to the council for reconsideration.

Benson said that if approved, the pre-engineering study by HR Green, which would take some time to complete, would give a good indication of the final cost of the project. He also added that if the project were to exceed expected costs, staff would have to come back to the council for additional funding, with the possibility of that being denied and the project being put on hold.

The resolution also states that funds from the Ducere agreement that are not used for the quiet zone project would automatically go back to use for other capital improvement projects.

Benson also said the city has the option of receiving additional funds up to about $500,000 from a redevelopment agreement in place with Chevron – which owns property in the prospective quiet-zone region – to be used if needed for the project.

The resolution will be up for approval at the council’s Dec. 21 meeting.

Once approved, the pre-engineering study and approval process could take up to a year, and the actual construction period could take an additional 12 to 18 months to be completed, Benson said.

JJC receives $1.2M grant to help students with potential to succeed JOLIET – Joliet Junior College received a $1.2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education that will allow it to help people from disadvantaged backgrounds with their education.

The Talent Search program – one of eight federal TRIO programs – will allow the college to identify and assist people from disadvantaged backgrounds who have the potential to succeed in higher education, according to a JJC news release.

The program provides academic, career and financial counseling to its participants and encourages them to graduate from high school as well as continue on to and complete their postsecondary education.

JJC will receive the $1.2 million

grant over five years to work each year with about 500 students in Joliet Township High School District 204 who either still are enrolled in high school or have dropped out.

JJC Project Achieve Director DeAndre Butler said in a news release that the college is excited about the grant.

“This will help JJC increase our efforts to work with high school age young people in our district and guide them through the process of preparing for college,” Butler said.

Project Achieve is an integrated TRIO/Student Support Services program at JJC. The federally funded program provides tools for students to stay in college, receive assistance to graduate and transfer to a four-year institution.

According to JJC’s Spring 2011 Connections Magazine, the college previously received a five-year, $2 million

TRIO grant through the U.S. Department of Education’s Student Support Services program.

The program helps colleges and universities provide opportunities for academic development and assist students with basic college requirements, as well as motivate students toward completion of postsecondary education.

According to the U.S. Department of Education, the goal of Talent Search is to increase the number of youth from disadvantaged backgrounds who complete high school and enroll in and complete their postsecondary education.

The eight programs part of TRIO are targeted to serve and assist low-income people, first generation college students and people with disabilities to “progress through the academic pipeline,” according to the U.S. Department of Education.

LOCKPORT – Having secured a $2.55 million redevelopment agreement with oil company Ducere LLC last month, the Lockport City Council is set to use those funds to move forward with its plans to establish quiet zones at its railroad crossings, albeit with some qualifications.

The council’s Committee of the Whole was presented with a resolution Wednesday night that dedicates the multimillion-dollar payment from Ducere – $2.05 million of which is expected to be received in the next few years – to establishing quiet zones at all of its 11 railroad crossings on the CN and BNSF rail lines.

Passing trains are not allowed to sound horns in quiet zones, so additional safety measures – such as quad gates, pedestrian gates and delineators – are required. The measures can be expensive. However, Mayor Steven Streit, who has been the driving force behind the project, has noted in the past

that quiet zones increase the quality of life for residents living in the vicinity of the railroad crossings and promote economic development in cities’ downtowns.

City Administrator Ben Benson presented the resolution, which included an estimation of costs for the project totaling about $3 million, which factors in a half-million dollar contingency.

The resolution also authorizes Benson to negotiate a $190,000 contract for pre-engineering services with engineering firm HR Green and to commence negotiations with rail companies. It authorizes execution of the application process for approval from federal and state agencies as well.

Alderman Jason VanderMeer – who in the past has been critical of plans to directly allocate the Ducere funds to quiet zones rather than putting them in the capital improvement project fund and then doling them out to projects by priority – indicated that he would not vote against the measure.

“As much as I’m tempted to filibuster … that’s not the goal,” VanderMeer said.

However, he did add that he would like to see a limit on the amount the city is willing to spend on the project, which if surpassed would require the

John Glenn, 1st American to orbit Earth, dies

WASHINGTON – John Glenn, whose 1962 flight as the first U.S. astronaut to orbit the Earth made him an all-American hero and propelled him to a long career in the U.S. Senate, died Thursday. The last survivor of the original Mercury 7 astronauts was 95.

Glenn died at the James Cancer Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, where he was hospitalized for more than a week, said Hank Wilson, communications director for the John Glenn School of Public Affairs.

John Herschel Glenn Jr. had two major career paths that often intersected: flying and politics, and he soared in both of them.

Darlene M. Searcy, born on November 1, 1962, beloved daughter, sister and aunt is at rest as of December 7, 2016, out of pain and in the arms of those Angels sent before us. It was a peaceful passing after a long hard fought battle against cancer.

As a youth, Darlene was very active in the Romeoville Roadrunners 4-H Club for 10 years, demonstrating excellence nearly all ten of those years winning county shows and showing at the Illinois State Fair. She was also an active member of the Girl Scouts.

Darlene trained at the following institutions: Saint Andrew the Apostle Grade school in Romeoville, Illinois, St. Francis Academy in Joliet, Illinois, where she enjoyed working backstage in various theater productions - and Two Masters Degrees from the Keller Graduate School of Management of DeVry University of Chicago.

As an adult in service to others, she has often been described as knowledgeable, intelligent, competent, and a passionate gentle soul serving Christ in the service to others around her.

Darlene had a career serving others keeping professionals on top of their game. She has held Executive Assistant and Marketing Administration positions with several companies including IBM and Unilever, as well as teaching administrative computer skills classes at various locations and most recently taking her executive skillset to Saint Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church in Romeoville, Il as the Communication Secretary where she found greater purpose while waging her war on her debilitating Cancer.

two wars, and as a test pilot, he set a transcontinental speed record. He later served 24 years in the Senate from Ohio. A rare setback was a failed 1984 run for the Democratic presidential nomination.

His long political career enabled him to return to space in the shuttle Discovery at age 77 in 1998, a cosmic victory lap that he relished and turned into a teachable John Glenn moment about growing old. He holds the record for the oldest person in space.

More than anything, Glenn was the ultimate and uniquely American space hero: a combat veteran with an easy smile, a strong marriage of 70 years and nerves of steel. Schools, a space center and the Columbus airport were named

after him. So were children.

The Soviet Union leaped ahead in space exploration by putting the Sputnik 1 satellite in orbit in 1957, and then launched the first man in space, cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, in a 108-minute orbital flight on April 12, 1961. After two suborbital flights by Alan Shepard Jr. and Gus Grissom, it was up to Glenn to be the first American to orbit the Earth.

“Godspeed, John Glenn,” fellow astronaut Scott Carpenter radioed just before Glenn thundered off a Cape Canaveral launch pad, now a National Historic Landmark, to a place America had never been. At the time of that Feb. 20, 1962, flight, Glenn was 40 years old.

During the four-hour, 55-minute flight, Glenn uttered a phrase that he would repeat frequently throughout life: “Zero G, and I feel fine.”

“It still seems so vivid to me,” Glenn

said in a 2012 interview with The Associated Press on the 50th anniversary of the flight. “I still can sort of pseudo feel some of those same sensations I had back in those days during launch and all.”

Glenn’s ride in the cramped Friendship 7 capsule had its scary moments.

Sensors showed his heat shield was loose after three orbits, and Mission Control worried he might burn up during re-entry when temperatures reached 3,000 degrees. But the heat shield held.

Glenn was born July 18, 1921, in Cambridge, Ohio, and grew up in New Concord, Ohio. His love of flight was lifelong; John Glenn Sr. spoke of the many summer evenings he arrived home to find his son running around the yard with outstretched arms, pretending he was piloting a plane.

CHICAGO – The purported leader of Chicago’s notorious Hobos street gang took the stand Thursday at his racketeering trial – one of the biggest in recent city history – to insist he didn’t order a deadly hit on a gang associate-turned-informant to stop him from providing evidence that could put the gang leadership behind bars for life.

The trial, in its third month and expected to end by Christmas, comes as national attention has focused on a spike in Chicago violence, which authorities said frequently stems from gang rivalry; there have been more than 700 homicides this year.

Prosecutors have described Gregory “Bowlegs” Chester and five alleged Hobos subordinates on trial in U.S. District Court as “an all-star team of the worst of the worst” who “terror-

Man denies killing security guard at Canadian National Railway facility near Chicago

HARVEY – A man charged in the fatal shooting of a security guard at a Canadian National Railway facility in suburban Chicago insisted he’s innocent.

Half a dozen sheriff’s deputies carried Rashad Williams into a Markham Courthouse courtroom Wednesday. The 24-year-old man from East Hazel Crest is charged with murder in the Nov. 26 death of 38-year-old Tyrone Hardin of Merrillville, Indiana.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported that Judge Darron Bowden ordered Williams out of the courtroom and Williams sank to his knees before being dragged out.

The Hobos was founded by members the Black Disciples and Gangster Disciples, then established a reputation for daring robberies and for resorting

to torture and murder to expand their criminal empire on the city’s South Side, prosecutors have said.

But when he first took the stand Wednesday, Chester claimed no such gang as the Hobos even existed despite his full-arm tattoo emblazoned with the words – “Hobo: The Earth Is Our Turf.”

He insisted “hobo” referred not to any gang, but to the nickname of a beloved dead friend.

During cross examination Thursday, prosecutor Patrick Otlewski displayed a photograph in court of Chester and another one of the accused flashing hand signs the government said were meant to be an “H’’ for “hobo.”

Chester denied it was a gang sign, telling jurors: “That’s a celebration sign.”

Chester repeatedly has highlighted his severely deformed legs caused

Police said the shooting occurred while Williams was fleeing after allegedly stealing a car. Police said he also shot at a second person.

Illinois DNR says firearm deer harvests are down 8.5 percent this year

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois hunters harvested about 8.5 percent fewer deer during the seven-day firearm season that ended Sunday compared with last year.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources said Wednesday that hunters this year harvested 79,429 deer. That’s compared with the seven days of the firearms season in 2015 when hunters harvested 86,847 deer.

Adams County in western Illinois had the top harvest number at 2,358. The fewest deer were harvested in Lake County in northern Illinois where five deer were taken.

State Crime Commission offers reward to fight dog fighting in DuPage County

CHICAGO – The Illinois State Crime Commission hopes that a $5,000 reward will prompt people with information about dog fighting will come forward.

In a news release, the commission said it is offering the money to anyone who provides information that leads to the arrest and conviction of people taking part in dog fighting in DuPage County.

The commission said a big problem is the theft of dogs to be used as “bait” for the fighting dogs to “practice on.”

It also said that besides stealing from dogs from yards in suburban and rural areas, the people involved in dog fighting find the “bait dogs” on websites where people offer free dogs because they are

Tobacco store manager sentenced in defrauding nearly $400K in tax case

CHICAGO – The manager of a suburban Chicago tobacco shop has pleaded guilty to defrauding the state out of nearly $400,000 and was sentenced to two years in prison.

In a news release, Attorney General Lisa Madigan’s office said Tale Aburukbeh of Chicago also was ordered to pay $392,160 in restitution after pleading guilty to filing fraudulent sales tax returns.

The 37-year-old Aburukbeh was charged last year while he was the manager of a Glendale Heights tobacco shop called Valentina #1, which also operated as Valentine Tobacco shop.

Madigan’s office said that between August 2011 and July 2014 Aburukbeh underreported millions of dollars in sales in his state sales tax returns.

Attorney: Roof’s mom had heart attack at trial

The Associated Press CHARLESTON, S.C. – Dylann Roof’s mother suffered a heart attack not long after prosecutors described how her son planned a cold and calculated killing of nine black church members in a racially motivated attack, the white man’s attorney said in court documents Thursday.

Roof’s mother collapsed and said “I’m sorry” several times Wednesday as family members and court security came to help her during the opening of her son’s federal death penalty trial.

Roof’s attorney David Bruck mentioned the heart attack in court documents asking for a mistrial, saying a survivor’s testimony was so emotional that “spectators and even court personnel – including members of the prosecution and defense – were crying with her.”

The documents didn’t give the mother’s current condition.

Later Thursday, in an eerily silent courtroom, 360-degree computer images of the crime scene were shown to the jury. The pictures showed the victims lying in pools of blood on the beige tile floor of the fellowship hall at Emanuel AME Church. Most were clustered around circular tables where they had been holding a Bible study.

Shell casings and ammunition magazines were scattered around as were Bibles and purses. One of the 15 scans showed a wall poster with the words “Faith, Hope and Love.”

Bruck argued in the motion for the mistrial that Wednesday testimony from shooting survivor Felicia Sanders was inappropriate because it seemed to contain a statement on what Roof’s sentence should be.

Sanders told jurors about the horror of seeing her son and her aunt shot to death and sheltering with her granddaughter beneath a table. At one point, she looked across the courtroom toward Roof and called him “evil, evil, evil.”

Bruck asked her on cross-examination whether she remembered Roof saying anything in the aftermath of the shootings.

“He said he was going to kill himself,” she said. “I was counting on that. There’s no place on Earth for him other than the pit of hell.”

U.S. District Judge Richard Gergel denied the mistrial request and said he interpreted Sanders’ testimony as “a religious comment.”

He instructed jurors that any decision on guilt or a sentence is up to the jury – not the attorneys or witnesses in the case.

Also Thursday, jurors watched surveillance footage of Roof leaving a Charleston church with a gun in his hand. Charleston police Sgt. Dan English showed the jury more than 20 video clips taken from cameras at the church on June 17, 2015.

The clips showed many of the victims and Roof entering the church. Roof is seen leaving the church 52 minutes later, and a final clip taken about 25 minutes after that showed one of the victims carried out on a stretcher.

The first big snowfall of the season usually is a welcome one. After all, all of that white stuff on the ground is downright picturesque.

And it gives all of my friends’ young children and animals a chance to have their pictures taken while they experience snow for the first time.

Maybe your social media feeds also were filled with snowmen, sledding and the like.

Yet, despite all the fun to be had, there’s some serious business that comes along with the colder conditions: trickier driving conditions. So now is a good time to remind ourselves of all of those winter driving techniques that we probably haven’t thought about for a few months.

These tips for driving on snow come courtesy of the AAA; more tips can be found at exchange.aaa.com.

• Accelerate and decelerate slowly and smoothly. Applying the gas slowly to get going is the best way to avoid skids.

Allow extra time to slow for a stoplight or stop sign. Remember, it takes longer to stop on icy and snow-covered roads.

• Give yourself extra time to maneuver. Everything – stopping, starting, turning, etc.

• Increase your following distance to six to eight seconds on icy roads from the usual dry-pavement following distance of three to four seconds.

This gives you more time to stop, if needed.

• Know your brakes. The best way to stop is threshold braking, even if you have anti-lock brakes. Keep the heel of your foot on the floor and use the ball of your foot to apply firm, steady pressure on the brake pedal.

• Try not to stop, if possible.

It’s easier to accelerate when you’re already moving than when you are at a full stop. If you can slow down enough to keep rolling until a traffic light changes, do it. (Just don’t run

• Don’t power up hills. Applying extra gas on snow-covered roads starts spinning the wheels. Try to get a little momentum going before you reach the hill, and let it carry you to the top. As you reach the crest of the hill, slow down and proceed downhill as slowly as possible.

• Don’t stop while going up a hill. There’s nothing worse than trying to get moving up a hill on an icy road.

• Always look and steer where you want to go.

• Stay home if you really don’t have to go out. Remember that even if you are a skilled winter driver, not everyone around you is.

Working nights for many years and going home when there weren’t many other drivers on the road allowed me to test a lot of these rules. I’d also add that it’s not a good idea to brake hard while going down a steep hill. It’s far better to decelerate slowly and maintain control.

Also remember that if you are using your windshield wipers when it’s snowing, you need to have your headlights on, even if it’s during the day.

That’s the law, and it applies for rain, too.

Here’s hoping that we don’t have an extra-snowy winter, one where we’re forced to use all of this information repeatedly. However, no doubt, we’ll need it at least a few times before spring.

Let’s be careful out there.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Don’t let Medicare become voucher plan

To the Editor: U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan; Rep. Kevin Brady, chairman, Ways and Means Committee; and Rep. Tom Price, chairman, Budget Committee; who is President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for Secretary of Health and Human Services, are among Republican leaders in the U.S. House who support legislation to privatize Medicare by converting it to a “premium support” system.

I urge your newspaper to editorialize against their efforts to change Medicare to a “voucher” plan that will raise the cost of health care for seniors.

Just because the Republican Party has majorities in the House and Senate and the President-elect, it is not a mandate to destroy Medicare with a “voucher” plan to pay outright subsidies to insurance companies who make big contributions to many members of Congress.

In April 2011, the Republican majority in the U.S. House of Representatives passed in a 2012 budget blueprint a proposal to replace traditional Medicare with vouchers.

This ignited a firestorm of opposition from Congressional Democrats, America’s seniors and the general public.

Back then, an analysis of the proposal by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) concluded that turning Medicare over to private insurance plans would result in seniors paying twice as much for their care, would raise administrative costs and would not keep medical inflation as low as traditional Medicare has done.

It is astonishing that after the bashing delivered to Republicans on the “voucher” proposal in 2011 that they would be reviving it again.

dgoss@shawmedia.com BOLINGBROOK – Lockport boys basketball coach Brett Hespell knows there are two ways his Porters can react to Thursday night’s SouthWest Suburban Blue 63-38 loss to unbeaten Bolingbrook.

“We either learn from this and grow, or we pout about it,” Hespell said. “That’s the thing we can’t do. I certainly hope we learn from it.

“On the other hand, they’re really good. There aren’t many teams out there that good.”

One of the few, perhaps, is up next for Lockport as the Porters will visit Joliet West on Tuesday night.

On Thursday, Lockport (4-3) hung tough for more than a half. After trailing, 16-8, early in the second quarter, the Porters battled back to within 22-20 before Bolingbrook’s Nebraska-bound Nana Akenten hit a 3-pointer as time was winding down in the half, making it 25-20 at the break.

That was one of four 3s the 6-foot6 Akenten nailed in a 21-point night.

Malik Binns took over the scoring thrust in the second half, especially around the basket, and finished with 16 points.

“Nana is big if you want to call him that, but he’s a wing,” Raiders coach Rob Brost said. “Offensively, he can do whatever he wants. That’s why he’s going to the Big Ten. He is shooting well over 50 percent on 3s for the year.

“Binns always plays hard. He is tenacious on the glass.”

Bolingbrook (5-0) was up, 36-30, late in the third quarter and outscored Lockport, 27-8, the rest of the way.

Brost said how far the Raiders, who are ranked among the top 10 teams in the state, go this season will be determined by how well they function as a team.

“It’s all about playing together,” he said. “They’ll go hard all the time.

SOUIX FALLS, SD – It wasn’t going to be easy.

After winning the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional championship for the first time under coach Lorelee Smith, the Lewis women’s volleyball team faced a tough opponent in the quarterfinals. The Flyers (29-7) met defending national champion Wheeling Jesuit, which was making its eighth consecutive trip to the nationals.

That didn’t faze the Flyers as Lewis beat Wheeling Jesuit, 25-17, 26-24, 30-28, Thursday to advance to the national semifinals, where the Flyers will face the winner of the Condordia-St. Paul and American quarterfinal.

Aly Schneider anchored Lewis with 15 kills. Maddie Seliga added 12 kills and five blocks, and Plainfield Central graduate Elizabeht Hyland had nine kills and 14 digs. Abby Baker dished out 44 assists, Caroline Stefanon had seven

blocks and Nicole Yueded 28 digs.

Earlier this week, Schneider was named to the AVCA Division II All-America second team, while Becker earned AVCA third-team accolades and Hyland was an honorable-mention selection.

Friction or not, Bears and Fox can’t afford to lose Fangio BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush

Coaches refuted report that Fangio could leave; Fox somewhat unclear I wish I could tell you with some certainty whether there is or is not friction between John Fox and Vic Fangio.

I cannot.

I can tell you that the story featured solid reporting from Mike Mulligan and the Tribune because I have been hearing from multiple sources around the NFL for at least three or four weeks now indicating there is an issue, and others have been calling me to ask what I know because they were hearing elsewhere that there is.

What my sources have not been clear on is whether it is Fox who has issues with Fangio, Fangio who has issues with Fox, if the feeling is mutual or whether this is just a molehill out of which someone is trying to make a mountain.

Confronted with the story Wednesday, both men did the only thing they could with four games remaining in the season: Deny, deny and deny some more.

What is interesting, however, is if you read Fox’s response verbatim, at no point did he say he wants Fangio back.

Asked specifically about Fangio’s future, Fox replied, “I want our whole staff back. Now whether that proves to be a reality or not, things happen. Guys get jobs, get head jobs, get chances to advance their careers.

Like any of the projection stuff, I just stay away from.”

If Fox wants Fangio to be his defensive coordinator in 2017, shouldn’t he

have said so, clearly and unambiguously?

Fangio also had an interesting reply when asked whether there was any friction with Fox. “Not really, we pretty much do what I see fit to do 98 percent of the time,” he said.

Asked about the other two percent, Fangio said, “Well, I’m always going to leave you a little bit there, nothing’s … that’s just the way it is.”

Having seen more than a few flashes of Fox’s ego over the past 22 months, it’s hard to understand how

that answer would sit real well, and it’s not unreasonable to read it as a shot across the head coach’s bow.

However, it is also completely reasonable to take both men exactly at their words and assume they will be together at least one more season.

Fangio is one of the best defensive coaches in the NFL, and losing him would be a huge setback in the rebuilding of the Bears and could be a real blow to Fox’s job security going forward.

In the last year of the Mel Tucker disaster, the Bears were 30th in total defense, 17th vs. the run, 30th vs. the pass and 31st in points allowed.

In Fangio’s first season they improved to 14th, 22nd, fourth and 20th, respectively, and this year they’ve made another leap to seventh in total defense, 18th vs. the run, sixth vs. the pass, and 16th in points allowed.

Rather than make that point in defense of his coordinator, Fox chose to pose it as across-the-board improvement of his team.

“I think right now, if you flash back two years ago, this defense was 32nd in the league. Right now it is seventh,” he said.

I don’t know whether there is an issue between Fox and Fangio. What I do know is the Bears cannot afford to lose Fangio, and given a chance to kill the possibility, Fox chose not to.

Jackson, Watson divvy up honors at college football awards

ATLANT A – Lamar Jackson picked up another trophy for his marvelous season.

He got a glimpse of the one he really wants.

On a red-carpet night in Atlanta, Jackson captured the Maxwell Award as the nation’s top college player Thursday night and signaled himself as the clear favorite for the Heisman Trophy.

Jackson already won the Walter Camp Award, also given to the best player.

“I’m shocked. I’ve got butterflies.

I never had those before,” the sophomore said, posing with his Maxwell Award after a ceremony at the College Football Hall of Fame, where eight other award winners were an-

nounced.

In an interesting twist, Clemson’s Deshaun Watson claimed the Davey O’Brien award as the nation’s top quarterback for the second year in a row – beating out Jackson.

Now it’s on to New York, where they’re both finalists for college football’s most prestigious individual award.

“He’s a tremendous player himself.

He’s done lot of great things,” Jackson said of Watson. “If he does (win the Heisman), oh well. Best man.”

Both quarterbacks got a look at a 25-pound Heisman Trophy on display in the Hall of Fame.

Jackson was impressed by the size.

“It’s a big trophy,” he said. “I’m going to need to do some more pushups.”

Maybe not.

Watson hasn’t given up on his

dream of claiming the Heisman before he heads off to the NFL. He won’t return for his senior season, having already earned his college degree in three years.

“I have a lot of confidence in the way I’ve played over the course of the season,” said Watson, who finished third in the Heisman race a year ago behind winner Derrick Henry of Alabama and runner-up Christian McCaffrey of Stanford.

While the Maxwell voting is a solid indication of how the Heisman race might go, it’s no guarantee. In fact, only two of the past five winners – Henry and Marcus Mariota in 2014 – went on to capture the more illustrious award.

Watson is holding out hope that he’ll pull out a come-from-behind victory over Jackson, who had been considered the overwhelming favor-

ite until the Cardinals lost their last two games.

Even with that, Jackson’s numbers are mind-boggling. He passed for 3,390 yards and 30 touchdowns, and rushed for 1,538 yards and 21 TDs. Watson guided Clemson to another Atlantic Coast Conference championship and a second straight appearance in the College Football Playoff.

The Tigers will meet Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl semifinal on New Year’s Eve. As for his Heisman chances, Watson said confidently, “I’m expecting to win. I always expect to have success.”

He’s already a huge success – on and off the field. Watson took his last final exam Wednesday in a political communication class.

“Next Thursday at this time, I will have a degree in hand and be a graduate,” he said. “It feels great.”

Hahn, White Sox go full throttle on rebuild

jagrest@suntimes.com NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. – The White Sox always seem to win the Winter Meetings. They haven’t won much else since 2005, but whether they’ve added splashy pieces to position a roster to contend or traded even bigger ones to begin a full rebuild, they’re always the ones exiting the building in the back-slap line.

This time, after trading Chris Sale and Adam Eaton, the acclaim came from prospect-analyst types, scouts, rival executives, media and fans alike for reeling in significant returns for their best pitcher and position player. Yoan Moncada, Lucas Giolato, Michael Kopech and Reynaldo Lopez are names many ticket-buyers probably hadn’t even heard of before this week, but the infusion into a thin farm system likely vaulted it from bottom-third to top-third status – if not higher. Those four names dropped Carson Fulmer’s from first to fifth in MLB.com’s updated rankings of Sox prospects, and Luis Basabe and Dane Dunning, also acquired in the Sale-Eaton deals, are the new Nos. 9 and 10.

Regardless of rank, there are more trades to come and more prospects to welcome in, as well as another guaranteed losing season, but at least with a caveat – that enough of the young talent in the farm system will meld into a roster that’ll go more than 10 good players deep by say, 2019.

That chairman Jerry Reinsdorf is on board with letting general manager Rick Hahn go full throttle on a rebuild says a lot about the frustration of a dead-end period featuring one playoff appearance since Paul Konerko handed him that prized World Series game ball that the chairman, at age 81, is willing to endure this.

“He’s been fully supportive of this from the start,” Hahn said. “He’s as

Hahn is not exactly basking in the glow of having reeled in baseball’s top-rated prospect (Moncada) and pitching prospect (Giolito) and more.

“It’s a weird feeling,’’ he said Thursday, still trying to wrap his head around showing Sale, as well as Eaton, the door to greener postseason pastures (Boston and Washington).

The dealing is far from done, with Hahn saying, “We’re still thoroughly engaged, deeply engaged on a number of different fronts” with names such as David Robertson drawing interest after closers Aroldis Chapman and Kenley Jansen came off the free-agent board.

“Perhaps now that the process has started in earnest, teams know now is the time to get serious and bear down on what’s on the table,’’ Hahn said.

son. It will be ongoing.

Exasperated fans seem rejuvenated, saying now is the time for a Sox offseason plan to actually work. This one will take time to unfold, and fans seem to be more than OK with it. They’ve had enough of copy-and-paste roster patching.

“While it was difficult to see Chris and Adam leave,’’ Sox vice president for communications Scott Reifert said, “fans quickly became excited about the depth and quality of talent Rick was able to obtain in exchange. Fans seem to understand our plan and direction and most we heard from embraced it with enthusiasm.’’

NOTE: The Sox made a Rule 5 pick, taking 2010 first-round draft choice Dylan Covey from the Oakland A’s. Covey, 25, must stay on the 25-man roster all season or be offered back to the A’s.

Covey was limited to six starts with Double-A Midland because of an oblique injury. He went 2-1 with a 1.84 ERA and 26 strikeouts over 29 innings.

Hahn views him as a bullpen piece or possible starter.

NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. – The Cubs’ efforts to stockpile bullpen depth continued with reports Thursday they’ve reached an agreement with Red Sox free-agent right-hander Koji Uehara on a one-year, $4.5 million deal.

Uehara, 41, was the Red Sox’s closer from 2012 to 2014, winning a World Series with Boston in 2013.

He has a 2.53 ERA and one All-Star appearance in eight big-league seasons. He is attractive to the Cubs in large part because of his effectiveness against left-handers (.183 career batting against and .555 OPS vs. .208 and .603).

The Cubs last week signed freeagent left-hander Brian Duensing to a one-year, $2 million deal. And this week at the annual winter meetings they traded outfielder Jorge Soler to the Royals for closer Wade Davis.

They also acquired Double-A lefthander Caleb Smith from the Brewers for cash after the Brewers selected Smith in Thursday’s Rule 5 draft.

‘It’s like hitting a home run at Wrigley Field’ Lincoln-Way Area Chorale performs at Carnegie Hall

NEW LENOX – Almost a year ago, Gregory Day received an email inviting him and his chorale to perform Nov. 27 at Carnegie Hall in New York.

And Day, the artistic director for the Lincoln-Way Area Chorale, almost deleted it.

“To be quite honest, I thought it was a piece of junk mail,” said Day, of New Lenox. “Then I noticed that it said they would try to call me. I thought, ‘OK, I’ll wait and see if I get a phone call.’ ” Day did, just before New Year’s Day, he said. The caller represented Distinguished Concerts International New York. Its selection team had listened to portions of the LWAC’s rendition of Handel’s “Messiah,” which it presented in 2013.

“I didn’t realize it, but after that concert we became nationally recognized,” Day said.

According to Day, the caller said, “We were just blown away. You’re the choir we want to help us out, and you would be a core choir.”

In mid-January, Day received a letter from Dr. Jonathan Griffith, DCINY artistic director and principal conductor, formally inviting the LWAC to take part in DCINY’s sixth annual performance of “Messiah ... Refreshed!” on Nov. 27 at Carnegie Hall’s Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage.

According to a news release from DCINY, the performance featured an international choir comprised of 16 participating ensembles and performers from multiple countries and continents, including Hong Kong, the United Kingdom, Poland and Canada, as well as soloists from the Metropolitan Opera and the award-winning Distinguished Concerts Orchestra led by maestro Jonathan Griffith.

“You can count on one hand the number of chorales from the Chicago area that ever had this opportunity, so I would say we’re in good company,” Day said.

Making a dream come true

But agreeing to the invitation meant overcoming several hurdles.

For one, at least 72 of the 108 members needed to commit to the program – with an equal representation of parts.

“We couldn’t have 50 people going and 35 of them are sopranos,” Day said. “And people have jobs and finances they worry about.”

Which led to point No. 2: Committing members had to pay their way and agree to help raise the performance fee of $700 a member. Point No. 3 was promising to attend extra rehearsals.

“I remember telling my wife, ‘No way is this going to happen, fulfilling all three of those criteria,’ ” Day said.

“Well, it did happen.”

Seventy-five chorale members participated. They set a fundraising goal of $50,000 and raised $35,000 through selling flowers for Mother’s Day in May, a country club gala in June, a dueling pianos event between Day and LWAC’s accompanist Jason Randall in July and a barbecue cook-off in August.

“Those not going were not required to help [fundraise],” Day said, “but many of them did it anyway.”

Jackie Pletsch of Frankfort headed up the fundraising. Pletsch, a lifelong singer who sang with the madrigals at Lincoln-Way Central High School in New Lenox in 1989 and 1990 and joined the LWAC in 2009, said she wanted to ensure everyone who wanted to participate could, “especially during the

“To sing at a place like Carnegie Hall is a dream,” Pletsch said. “It’s like hitting a home run at Wrigley Field.”

And then it happened

Most LWAC members flew to New York either on the day before Thanksgiving or Thanksgiving Day. The singers rehearsed all day Friday and Saturday; a dress rehearsal was held Sunday morning, Day said.

Not until Day walked onto the stage did the magnitude of the opportunity “hit him square in the eyes.”

“The gentleman next to me was from Quebec City, Canada,” Day said.

“He did not speak a word of English – he spoke French exclusively – but he knew the English pronunciation for the entire ‘Messiah’ beautifully. A gentleman behind me was from Japan.

Another small group came from China and one from Great Britain – literally

all over the world.”

Pletsch, a soprano, said the experience “took her breath away.”

“I started to cry and then thought, ‘I can’t cry. I have to sing,’ ” Pletsch said.

Ken Reed of Frankfort, a bass, participated, as did his wife, Marianna Reed, an alto. Ken said he now has performed on two of the greatest stages in the world. When Ken was in college 50 years ago he did a stint with the Purdue Marching Band at Radio City Music Hall.

He can’t believe he’s now sung at Carnegie Hall, too.

“It doesn’t get better than that,” Ken said.

The performance was live-streamed via DCINY’s Facebook page, Day said.

Day said the chorale has since received numerous invitations to sing at various concerts around the world.

Although such invitations may be considered on an event-by-event basis, Day is firm about one thing.

“Our first loyalty and our first responsibility is to our community right here,” Day said. “No matter what the opportunity or where in the future, our first loyalty is to the Lincoln-Way community. I can’t say how strongly I feel about that.”

Center for Disability Services hosts ‘Racing for a Cause’ JOLIET – The Center for Disability Services held “Racing for a Cause on Sept. 17 at the Autobahn Country Club.

One hundred guests were invited to experience a unique farm-to-table cuisine by Executive Chef Peggy Gerdes on the actual racing track.

Guests were then invited to the Keck’s Garage Mahal for an after party with entertainment by the Barn Burners Band.

The event raised more than $10,000 for the WillPower Endowment Fund to support the newly created WillPower Home Economics Room at the Center for Disability Services.

PLAINFIELD – Lani Nishimura of Plainfield won the September portion of the Forest Preserve District of Will County’s Preserve the Moment photo contest with a picture of a red-tailed hawk soaring above Lake Renwick Preserve in Plainfield.

Judges were impressed with the contrast of the magnificent bird’s outstretched wings against a partly cloudy powder blue sky.

Nishimura said she’s a frequent visitor to the preserves. Nishimura said she has learned to open her eyes to the world around her, and that’s how she spotted the red-tailed hawk.

The American Urological Association has taken this study into account and varied its recommendations. It does not recommend screening for average-risk men between the ages of 40 to 54, but says higher-risk men – typically those with a family history of prostate cancer or who are African American – may benefit at that age.

For men ages 55 to 69, the association recommends doctors explain the risks and benefits of the PSA test and conduct it every two years. This recommendation changes for men with an elevated PSA, between 4 and 7. In these men, testing should be more frequent to make sure the level does not rise beyond 7, which may be an indication for biopsy. However, if the PSA level is consistently low and at a level of 1 or less by the age of 60, there may be no need for further screening tests.

My feeling is the PSA test is useful for average-risk men ages 55 to 69, but it doesn’t have to be repeated yearly if it is normal. The test could be done every two to four years.

Another variable that may add to decision-making – and take some of the fear out of the follow-up – is the advent of the prostate MRI, which can both detect prostate cancers in men with an elevated PSA and decrease the complications from prostate biopsy.

Dear Reader: The short answer: Only in certain situations. Prostate cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer death among men, and in an effort to spot it early, doctors long have used the PSA test to measure prostate-specific antigen, or PSA, a glycoprotein produced within the prostate. PSA production increases in prostate cancer, as does the release of the protein into the bloodstream.

Since the inception of the PSA test in 1986, prostate cancer diagnoses have increased so much one in six men now will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetimes. One might think it is a good test, but not so fast.

The PSA test is problematic in three ways.

The first is it will detect many prostate cancers that never will be clinically significant, meaning they will never cause symptoms.

Autopsy studies have shown 30 percent of men have some form of prostate cancer by age 55, and 60 percent of men have prostate cancer by the age of 80. The majority of these cancers would have gone unnoticed, with no ill effects.

The second problem is investigating an elevated PSA with a prostate biopsy can cause significant side effects, including prostate infections, impotence, incontinence and, occasionally, death. These side effects are magnified when a patient has either prostate surgery or radiation treatment for prostate cancer, treatments that may be unnecessary for a low-grade prostate cancer.

The third problem is PSA levels also increase in men who have enlarged or inflamed prostates – but not cancer. Men can be subjected to biopsies and their risks because they have another condition entirely.

Based on these problems, some professional organizations now recommend doctors not perform the PSA test. What appears to counter this logic is a large Eu-
