Joliet city manager proposes Rialto Square Theatre takeover

mmallory@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The city of Joliet has outlined a proposal to take control of the Rialto Square Theatre.

Toward the end of the City Council meeting Tuesday night, Joliet City Manager Jim Hock began speaking on the topic by listing the Rialto’s latest financial troubles, throughout which he said the city met an ongoing mantra – save the Rialto.

These instances included paying off the Rialto’s unpaid payroll taxes in April and paying two scheduled performers directly so the Rialto wouldn’t be forced to cancel shows.

Hock said the Rialto board selected in August an outside company, VenuWorks, to manage the theater, knowing its proposed operational model had an annual deficit.

Before Hock presented a proposed Joliet budget to the council Nov. 1, VenuWorks

Hock also proposed the city manage nonconcert events, such as weddings and recitals, and enter into contracts with Harrah’s and other entertainment vendors to put on concerts and performances. The city would also include the Rialto building in its engineering consultant facilities evaluation contract to evaluate the physical condition of the property.

“This proposal to me seems like a natural progression of the commitment the city has made to the downtown,” Hock said.

“We own the baseball stadium, the building in right field, Union Station, soon a new train station, a new bus station, along with a historical museum. If the city is going to move forward with investments to implement the downtown plan, we have to ensure that concerts and other performances are scheduled at the Rialto.”

Lincoln-Way D-210 committee discusses check list for accounting improvements

fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Lincoln-Way District 210 officials have put together a check list of items they need to complete to improve their accounting practices before their next audit.

The list was discussed at Tuesday’s Finance and Building Committee, where David Meyer, a partner at Wermer, Rogers, Doran and Ruzon, presented the results of the firm’s 2015-16 audit of the district.

The list has 16 items for district officials to track that concern the general ledger, capital assets, debt service payments and other areas that were recommended by WRDR auditors in need of improvement.

sent a letter requesting $500,000 from the city, he said. The city’s current proposed budget does not include any Rialto funding.

Finally, Hock said Tuesday night that last week Rialto officials came to the city with a proposed intergovernmental agreement requesting the city commit funding for four years.

“I have a proposal that I’d like to talk to you about considering how the city can again save the Rialto,” Hock said to the council.

Hock proposed the city adopt a resolution asking state lawmakers to introduce legislation that transfers ownership of the Rialto and its properties to the city.

“The city will sell the office buildings that aren’t part of the theater to the private sector, will pay off all the bills the Rialto board has approved for payment but have not paid, and will assume the renovation loan obligation of approximately $2.4 million,” Hock said.

if there’s no change it’s still presented,” board member Christopher Lucchetti said about the list.

After the committee meeting, Superintendent Scott Tingley said the items on the list have been identified and discussed a number of times by the district before the audit was completed and Finance Director Kelly Luzzo was working through them.

“We hope to resolve a majority of those before our next audit,” Tingley said.

Luzzo said to the committee there six items on the list that she felt have been addressed. Those items regard federal expenses, improperly recorded expenses in past fiscal years, the general ledger, budget recorded in accounting software, capital outlay expenses and tax anticipation warrants.

continued monitoring throughout the year.

The auditors noted federal expenses were not directly traceable to specific accounts in the district’s general ledger and the district did not use various functions and objects – such as drivers’ education and non-capitalized equipment.

Committee member Catherine Pleasant asked about how people would know these items are being completed and who’s checking to see they are done.

Board member Christopher Kosel said that was the kind of discussion he thinks committee members should continue to have and help Luzzo with what they wanted to see. He said he’s looking for committee members and residents to bring recommendations forward.

“It’s got to be a constant state of improvement,” he said.

Vets discuss significance of 1941 attacks that triggered U.S. entry into World War II

mmallory@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Mead Clark was a sophomore at Joliet Township High School in 1941.

“I didn’t know anything about anything,” Clark said.

But over the next five years, he would learn and experience more than he ever imagined.

Clark had just been picked up by a friend on Sunday, Dec. 7, 1941, when the same friend told him the news – he just heard on the radio Japan attacked Pearl Harbor that morning.

The attacks on the U.S. naval base left 2,403 Americans dead and triggered U.S. entry into World War II the next day.

In 1943, Clark was drafted into the Army before finishing high school. He eventually made his way to Germany and served until 1946. Much of the time he fought in the war, he said, he was lost in the bitter cold.

Felix Pasteris chose to join the Air Force in 1940. He fought three years overseas and was allowed to go home when the war ended in 1945.

“I didn’t think I’d ever get home,” Pasteris said.

Both Clark and Pasteris still are able to describe the death, hunger and extreme conditions that were all around them. The attacks on Pearl Harbor that drew the U.S. into the war truly gave them a different outlook on life.

“I appreciate life way more,” Pasteris said. “We’re not heroes – the ones who died are the heroes. You could just be standing there and a bullet takes you out.”

Eventually, he was able to adjust to life at home after returning from the war. But many of the kids he grew up with weren’t so lucky. It’s still hard for him to believe the list of classmates from Joliet who died in the war.

“Everybody loses in war,” Pasteris said. “I’d do anything back then to get out of war.”

Cantigny VFW Post 367 Commander Lou Smith, who served in the Navy in the Vietnam War, noted how his generation of military members was the offspring of many World War II veterans or people who lived through it here in the States.

“We listened to stories from our parents, grandmas, grandpas – what they went through,” Smith said. “The stamps they used to get gasoline, food

Smith said that during the course of his service, he made his way through Pearl Harbor several times.

“When we came back from the [Vietnam] War, we’d go through Pearl Harbor on the way home,” Smith said. “You go by the [USS] Arizona and salute every time.”

He said it’s quite moving to visit the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor.

It’s the resting place of 1,102 sailors and Marines who died as a result of the attacks. The name of every person who died is listed on the memorial. at the store, because it was rationed. If you had a sugar ration, you were rich in those days.”

The war with Japan cut off U.S. imports from the Philippines, and stamps were issued to get items such as sugar.

“But watching all those documenta-

ries, it’s amazing what this country did and how it united behind its service people,” Smith said.

The U.S. rebounded in the 75 years since the attacks. And Pearl Harbor still is a place held in high regard by men and women who served in the military.

Bar owners speak up against shortening hours

Shaw Media correspondent As the vote to tighten early morning bar hours draws closer, the Channahon Village Board on Monday heard from two bar owners about how the changes would affect their businesses.

“I don’t think it’s right,” Chris Sarris, owner of The Office Bar and Grill, told trustees. “I feel like you’re taking my income away from me, and I’ve done nothing wrong. ... I still don’t understand what the reason is.”

Village President Missey Moorman Schumacher is proposing shortening hours bars with a Class A liquor license may serve liquor by one hour on the weekends. If approved at the board’s Dec. 19 meeting, the bars would have to stop serving at 2 a.m, up from the current 3 a.m.

Keeping drinking establishments open late leads to more police incidents, Schumacher has said. The village board has to look out for the safety of all of Channahon’s residents, she said this

week.

Sarris said village staff had given him a list of eight early morning police incidents at The Office Bar and Grill or in the parking lot of the strip mall in which the bar is located. The list goes back two years, he said, but half of the incidents took place at times when the bar wasn’t even open for business, such as reckless driving in the parking lot.

Channahon Police Chief Jeff Wold indicated he would look into the list further.

“I believe there’s nothing that’s happened at my bar to warrant this,” Sarris said. “I’m losing 104 hours a year. ... I’m losing a ton of money, is what it comes down to, and so are my employees.”

Schumacher said that, if the changes are eventually approved, the bars would actually have more hours to serve liquor than they do now, as the board is considering allowing Class A bars to open earlier on Sunday mornings, after the request was made by Tom Doud of Channahon Lanes bowling alley.

Crest Hill moves forward with police emergency radio system

aschier@shawmedia.com CREST HILL – Crest Hill police will soon be able to communicate better with other first response agencies after a new emergency radio system for the department is put in place.

The City Council unanimously approved at its meeting Monday an intergovernmental agreement between emergency dispatch center WESCOM and Crest Hill for financing of the new system, Interim City Administrator Heather McGuire said Tuesday.

The police department is switching from its current emergency communication system to one through STARCOM21, the state’s official public safety radio network.

The city was already paying WESCOM for use of its system, according to McGuire, and as WESCOM switches to STARCOM21, Crest Hill will make the change as well.

More agencies use STARCOM21 than the city’s existing system, McGuire said.

STARCOM21 creates a single frequency that any agency that has an agreement with WESCOM can access – a departure

The change will cost the city about $6,000 more per year, McGuire said, because the system is more complex. The shift is expected to go into effect in the coming weeks.

Also Monday, McGuire said, the council unanimously voted to change the zoning on a half acre lot between Cowing Lane and Brian Drive from residential to manufacturing to allow adjacent metal fabrication business Fab Werks Inc. to expand. The lot is located between one area zoned residential and another area zoned manufacturing, McGuire said. Construction on the Fab Werks expansion is anticipated to begin in six months to a year.

“The eight to 10 on a Sunday morning is not going to make up for a Saturday night,” Davis said.

Schumacher and trustees said they are also considering allowing the bars to stay open later on such holidays as Halloween, Labor Day, St. Patrick’s Day, the day before Thanksgiving, and on the day in July when the village celebrates Fourth of July with fireworks.

The third Class A bar owner, Tom Doud, previously told the board that losing an hour on weekend nights wouldn’t make much difference to his business, but having more hours on a Sunday morning would benefit him.

“I hope people come out and make sure this does not pass,” Sarris said after the meeting.

The village board may vote on the

change at its Dec. 19 meeting.

Channahon trustees Monday also heard a report from Will County Center for Economic Development President John Greuling on how the organization has been working for Channahon and other western Will County communities.

Included, he said, are the commitments by the governor and the Illinois Department of Transportation to provide the dollars to reconstruct the Houbolt Road/I-80 interchange; the creation of a Freight Mobility Plan to look at freight movement issues faced by local communities; and steering businesses looking for new locations to the area.

In its 2016 Annual Report just released last week, Greuling said, the total number of jobs created in the county this year is 8,093, which he said was the largest number he’s seen in 15 years.

After the presentation, Channahon trustees approved contributing the village’s annual $5,000 contribution to the organization.

Sentencing begins in ’14 Joliet slaying

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Sentencing proceedings have begun for a Joliet man convicted of fatally shooting one man and wounding another two years ago.

But Aloysius “June” Alexander, 31, denied to Judge Carla Alessio Policandriotes that he is responsible for killing Johnny Lockhart and wounding Ledontia Lockhart.

“I’m deeply sorry to the victim’s family for the loss of their loved one.

No one should have to bury family members,” Alexander said Friday. “I hope one day the person who committed this crime is brought to justice.”

During a bench trial in September, Alessio Policandriotes determined Alexander was the one who shot the Lockharts on Dec. 6, 2014, in the 500 block of North Chicago Street in Joliet.

According to trial testimony, Alexander accompanied his friends, Mike Smith and Brian Gregory, to the Lockharts’ apartment to back up Smith in a fistfight with Ledontia Lockhart. Although the men were all friends, Smith’s girlfriend, Miya Morris, believed Ledontia Lockhart had stolen a $400 money order from her

car two weeks earlier.

Johnny Lockhart, 59, came outside to complain about the noise and was being led back to the porch when he and his son were shot by Alexander.

Ledontia Lockhart, Smith and Gregory all identified Alexander and offered essentially the same narrative when they testified during the trial.

Smith testified that when they got back to their car, Alexander answered, “I don’t know,” when he was asked why he’d shot them.

“My dad was a great man who never bothered anyone,” Ledontia Lockhart stated in a letter to the judge. “He kept to himself and I should have followed his advice and not made those new friends. Seeing my dad die in my arms killed a part of me.” “[Alexander] seemed to be an upstanding member of the community ... fixed cars, cut hair, [minimal] criminal history,” Will County Assistant State’s Attorney Derek Ewanic said.

“The defendant has the ability to turn on a dime. He brought a gun to a fistfight.”

Alexander will be sentenced to a minimum of 51 years in prison when Alessio Policandriotes renders a decision Dec. 29. He could receive a life sentence.

Will, Grundy Republicans clash on controversial energy bill

mmallory@shawmedia.com The Illinois House and Senate approved a bill last week that has been characterized as an Exelon bailout by those opposed to it and a job-saving, renewable energy-promoting bill by those in favor of it.

The Senate passed the bill with a 32-18 vote and the House passed it with a 63-38 vote. Gov. Bruce Rauner is expected to sign it this week, according to published reports.

Exelon stated in June that it would close two nuclear plants – one in June 2017 in Clinton and one in June 2018 in Cordova – if the state did not act on the legislation.

The legislation, which has been modified during the past two years, would give $235 million each year to utilities and allow ComEd to increase spending on energy efficiency. Monthly rates will increase for ComEd customers, but the increase will be limited to 25 cents a month.

State Rep. Mark Batinick, R-Plainfield, came out strongly against the bill when given the chance to speak last week on the house floor.

He said he spent much of his Thanksgiving weekend trying to get information about the bill because it’s been changed so many times. Several changes were made to it the day it passed.

On principle alone, Batinick said he was against the legislation and that the state budget and essential services need to be the first priority over a bailout of a profitable, multibillion-dollar company.

Other Republicans, such as state Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris, and state Rep. David Welter, R-Morris, voted in favor of the bill. Many employees of Exelon’s Dresden, Braidwood and LaSalle nuclear stations live in their respective districts.

Rezin stated in a news release that the legislation will keep nuclear power plants in Cordova and Clinton in operation, saving thousands of jobs and communities from economic devastation.

Batinick said the bill was the only big piece of legislation the General Assembly has really worked on since a stop-gap budget was approved in late June. Now, the state will go into 2017 with no budget for the second half of the fiscal year.

JOLIET – Bright and early Sunday, 50 smiling faces eagerly waited, as one by one their names were called to go on a holiday shopping trip. Within minutes the toy aisles were jammed with children as they looked for the perfect gift.

The 10th annual Shop with a Fireman took place at Sam’s Club in Joliet.

Forty firefighters from the Joliet Fire Department volunteered to partner with a child from Guardian Angel Community Services and head out into the store for a shopping adventure.

“The best is seeing the kids smile, it’s awesome. These kids are less fortunate than a lot of kids in America, so it’s great to help them out,” firefighter Mat Vilcek said.

Debby Meeker, groundwork program supervisor of counseling at Guardian Angel Community Services, said 10 years ago the department asked whether Guardian Angel would send children to shop at Sam’s Club with a firefighter.

That year, they sent five children over and when it became a Guardian Angel exclusive event the following

year, the numbers of children who could be helped increased.

Meeker said the children who participate in the shopping day receive services or have a parent who receives services from Guardian Angel.

“Most of the families we serve are under poverty level and in most cases the moms have left an abusive relationship and had to start over. They struggle to pay bills, rent, groceries and gas in their car if they have one,” Meeker said.

“This event allows the kids to get toys and things they didn’t think they would be able to have.”

Sunday, the children each arrived at Sam’s Club and were matched with a firefighter, given a $150 gift card and shopped for what they wanted, whether for themselves or a member of their family.

“We encourage the spirit of giving.

Their moms are used to self-sacrifice, so we try to encourage the kids to buy something for their mom,” Guardian Angel program coordinator Amirrah Abou-Youssef said.

Carts filled quickly with toys such as pink fluffy stuffed animals, dollhouses, remote-controlled cars, builder sets and books, while blankets, books, perfume and clothes were popular choices for mom. Some children bought practical items, such as food and winter gear such as hats, gloves and coats – a vast array, which was easy to get in a store filled with just about everything.

“I like seeing everyone’s choices.

Some kids loaded up with food, others bought toys, it’s interesting. [A teen] picked out some perfume for her mom,

a sleeper for her younger brother and a sweatshirt for herself,” firefighter Jesse Oostema said.

Firefighter and Shop with a Fireman coordinator Chris O’Hara said $7,500 was needed to fund the 50 gift cards.

O’Hara said the firefighters raised funds during their Shop with a Fireman Cookout event in September. The other money was donated by Sam’s Club in Joliet.

Sam’s Club Joliet Manager Marc Hayden said between the money donated for gift cards, food for the breakfast after the shopping event, and wrapping paper, tape and bows, the store donated $5,500, and the fire department donated $3,500.

Hayden said Wal-Mart, which owns Sam’s Club, encourages its employees to volunteer, and through its Volunteering Always Pays program, volunteers are reimbursed up to $250 per person towards charity events.

Sam’s Club Joliet personnel training coordinator Ludi Frausto said last year 50 employees volunteered for five hours at the Shop with a Fireman event.

Those volunteer reimbursements raised $5,000, which come out of the Wal-Mart Foundation. Those funds from last year were used to fund this year’s shopping day.

After the presents were picked, the gifts were wrapped by Sam’s Club employees and their families, as well as students who volunteered their time. Then, each firefighter and child sat down for a breakfast and time to get to know the child.

“We hope they look up to us, most don’t have a positive male role model in their lives. Year after year we get to know these kids because we do have some of the same kids each year,” O’Hara said.

12 Detectives testify in ’09 shaken baby case

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Attorneys for a Lockport man accused of shaking his infant daughter to death want to keep the statements he made to detectives from being used at his trial.

Judge Daniel Kennedy heard testimony from investigators with the Will-Grundy Major Crimes Task Force on Tuesday and watched a video recording they made with Mark J. Trubiano at Children’s Memorial Hospital, now Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago.

On Dec. 27, 2009, 2-month-old Storey Trubiano stopped breathing and was taken to Silver Cross Hospital, then transferred to Children’s Memorial the next day. Doctors contacted police after finding the baby had bleeding in the brain and retinal hemorrhages, according to testimony from Joliet Police Department Sgt. Linda Odom and retired Lockport Police Department Detective Bill Sheehan.

The detectives first interviewed Dawn Trubiano in a waiting room, then questioned her husband, who’d been alone with the baby when she stopped breathing. After Mark Trubiano had been speaking with Odom and Sheehan for nearly two hours he was given his Miranda rights and Sheehan used a

camera he’d brought to record a second 20-minute interview with Mark Trubiano, conducted by Odom.

Both detectives testified Mark Trubiano was cooperative and appeared to understand when he was read his rights and signed the forms. Mark Trubiano told Odom the baby had been fussy and crying that evening with her mother so he took her and walked her around the house before going upstairs to change her diaper.

“I walked to the nursery and as I’m going down the hall, I [shook] her as a, ‘Are you OK?’ ’’ Trubiano said on the video while he made a rocking motion with his hands. “Yeah, I’m a little frustrated.”

“How many times did you shake her?” Odom asked.

“Maybe three,” Trubiano replied.

Storey Trubiano died three days after being hospitalized. Mark Trubiano, 45, was charged with murder and released from the Will County Jail the following week after posting a $3 million bond.

An autopsy showed the girl died from “cerebral injuries due to blunt head trauma due to child abuse.” Her brain was ordered to be preserved for further testing, but the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office misfiled the evidence and it has not been located in the past six years.

Lawsuit filed against former police chief

bstanley@shawmedia.com BRAIDWOOD – A one-time Braidwood mayoral candidate claims that the city’s former police chief used his access to law enforcement records to derail the candidate’s political aspirations.

Robert Snedeker filed a lawsuit Nov. 28 claiming that former Chief Rich Girot disregarded Snedeker’s constitutional rights and conspired to “humiliate, embarrass and degrade [Snedeker’s] character.”

On Dec. 15, 2014, Snedeker filed a petition to run for mayor and two days later a search of the Law Enforcement Agencies Database System, which links criminal records, police contacts and other information from agencies across the country, was made on Snedeker by the Braidwood Police Department.

At the Jan. 13, 2015, City Council meeting, Girot was asked by city attorney Scott Pyles about Snedeker’s eligibility to run for office because of his felony conviction. According to meeting minutes posted online, Girot said Snedeker received a two-year sentence for delivery of drugs. Girot also said Snedeker had a Wisconsin driver’s

license and was ineligible to run for mayor as a nonresident of Braidwood.

“Defendant Girot had no evidence – and no evidence existed – to suggest [Snedeker] had committed any criminal acts or acted in any inappropriate manner for such an investigation to be commenced,” the lawsuit stated. “The investigation ... was done for political purposes with the intent to humiliate, embarrass, degrade and remove [him] from the ballot during his run for Mayor for the City of Braidwood.”

Braidwood police told the state an internal investigation “revealed the inquiry was made for a legitimate criminal justice purpose and as part of their regular practices,” according to a letter from the Illinois State Police filed with the lawsuit.

Girot was a Will County sheriff’s deputy for 22 years and Braidwood mayor from 1995 to 1999. In 2011, he became police chief and city administrator. Jim Vehrs was elected mayor in April 2015 and replaced Girot with another retired deputy, Nick Ficarello, the following month.

Girot did not return a message left Tuesday seeking comment.

standards for STEM learning, he said.

“All of those essentially gel together to be a learning experience the students can use. As the curriculum and as the content changes, those platforms essentially download that content and adapt on a daily basis or a monthly basis,” Yedwab said.

“Everybody can look at this one object at the same time. You can zoom in, you can zoom out, you can rotate it. …

It’s really like they have the skull in their hand,” Keim said.

Student Rachel Lallky said the lab pulls students like her out of the daily routine of typical classroom work and engages them in more hands-on learning. It also allows for more opportunities for students to become self-reliant.

“We can really control what we learn and if we need to know something more about a certain subject, we can take it into our hands and see what we need to do in the lab without necessarily needing our teacher for everything,” Lallky said.

LOCKPORT – A new lab at Lockport Township High School East Campus has virtual reality technology that can take anatomy students inside a human heart and examine different parts of the organ.

While wearing 3-D glasses, Lockport District 205 Superintendent Todd Wernet was doing just that Tuesday with guidance by students already using one of the 12 zSpace 3-D virtual reality computers in the lab.

Equipment in the lab promises to offer more learning opportunities for students interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

“It provides a unique dimension to the students’ learning,” Wernet said.

District 205 officials unveiled the STEM Innovative 3-D Laboratory at an open house Tuesday. The lab was made possible through a grant awarded by CITGO Lemont Refinery to the district.

In May, the district was awarded a CITGO STEM Talent Pipeline monetary grant, according to a district news release.

JOLIET – Ereen Koscielski rang the doorbell to her own home as Team Make a Difference founder Audra Crowther scurried to open the door to reveal the complete transformation of Koscielski’s home over the past four days.

“My first thought was, ‘I think we walked into someone else’s house,’ ” Ereen said.

On Thursday, after just over one month of ownership, Koscielski and her daughter, Emily Koscielski, and son, John Koscielski, packed a suitcase and left their newly acquired Joliet townhome, not knowing what to expect when they returned late Sunday.

Just as Ereen and her children left the home, a good friend whom Ereen met from her support group, Sisters in Scars – group founder Michele Martineau of Colorado – sat in her taxi to wait for the all-clear to come in.

“Ereen is awesome. If you spend five minutes with her, you would know what an amazing mom and friend she is – and she would give anything to anybody else. We all have to help each other,” Martineau said.

For the past four years, Ereen has battled breast cancer. The past two she has fought metastatic breast cancer stage 4. Ereen and her children have faced challenges the past four years, which include job loss, home loss and

“Emily wanted her room to be her room. It’s been a rough four years and we’ve been staying here and there. I just wanted for her to have her own space,” Ereen said.

Crowther and her team of family and friends started to renovate rooms for people who have a chronic illness or have battled cancer and need a comfortable place to heal, and Team Make a Difference was born.

The organization has always been 100 percent volunteer-based and on any given project professional painters, plumbers, carpenters, decorators and electricians take over the home for one mission – to create a tranquil space to suit their hero in need.

The organization takes on two projects a year, paid for by fundraisers, sponsors and private donors. What

For Ereen’s makeover, Crowther and Will County Habitat for Humanity ReStore manager Heidi Serena decided to collaborate and use products from the ReStore.

When it came time to find a family, Shorewood HUGS, which has been a Team Make a Difference partner, found Ereen and led her to Crowther.

Crowther said Ereen’s makeover was more time-consuming than most because of the challenge of repurposing old furniture to make it new, but that it was worth the effort to show how people can decorate with items in resale stores.

Thursday and Friday, volunteers from the Joliet Fire Department and the Joliet West High School football team tore up the carpet in the home and began to strip and paint furniture.

Friday, the firefighters came back and put new floors in throughout the entire home.

“The guys have been wonderful. I mention something that needs to be done and they say, ‘We got it, no problem,’ or, ‘What do you need done, we’ll take care of it,’ ” Crowther said of the firefighters and football team.

“I had an old hand-me-down twin bed someone gave me and it was the most uncomfortable bed ever. I’m so excited to sleep in an actual bed tonight,” Ereen said.

While at Ereen’s home before the makeover, Crowther said she overheard Ereen tell friends that she could put up a Christmas tree over 2 feet and

use her mother’s ornaments.

Just hours before the reveal, two volunteers, Sarah Borgstrom of Morris and Jamie Mathena of Ottawa, carefully placed each sentimental ornament on a tree placed in the front window of the home.

“It’s so amazing. I don’t have to worry about doing anything to this home,” Ereen said.

Born: May 31, 1945; in Sicily Island, LA Died: November 28, 2016; in Joliet, IL Barbara Jean Coleman, was born on May 31, 1945 in Sicily Island, LA to Pearlie Coleman and Irene Coleman. She departed this life on Tuesday, November 28, 2016 at Spring Creek Nursing Home in Joliet,

Illinois.

She grew up in Louisiana and attended public school and graduated from high school.

She moved to Joliet, Illinois to be closer with her brother in the 1980s.

Barbara is preceded in death by her father, Pearly Coleman Sr.; mother, Irene Lindsey Finister; sister, Inez Coleman; brothers, James, Jessie Ray and J.C. Coleman.

Barbara worked at Motel 6 in Joliet, Illinois in the housekeeping department for many years. She later worked downtown Joliet in the assisted living housing in the housekeeping department. She enjoyed watching television and spending time with her family.

Barbara is survived by her children, Mary Kinney (Charles) and Faye Coleman, both of Joliet, Illinois; one son, Ondra Coleman; brothers, Pearly Coleman Jr. (LuEllen) of Joliet, IL, Joseph Coleman of Florida, Joe Coleman of Portland, OR, Ledell Coleman of Elam, LA and John H. Coleman of Monroe, LA; sisters, Lynn Coleman, Rena Mae Coleman and Betty Henderson, all of Monroe, LA; granddaughter, Chantell Coleman of Joliet, IL; special cousin, Joe Henry Nelson of Alexander, LA and a host of other relatives and friends.

Thomas is survived by his loving son, Daniel (Julie) Nasenbeny; cherished grandchildren, Nickolas and Madison; dear brother, Gerald (Dolores) Nasenbeny; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Thomas was a graduate of Joliet Catholic High School where he played baseball as a pitcher. He was a proud United States Army veteran. He was employed at U.S. Steel for 47 years. Thomas was involved in the hobby of pigeon racing for many years. He was an avid sports fan and a devoted Cubs fan. He coached his son, Dan during his youth at St. Joe’s Little League. He will be greatly missed.

The ASSOCIATED PRESS LONDON – Veteran British character actor Peter Vaughan, who played the enigmatic Maester Aemon in “Game of Thrones,” has died aged 93.

Vaughan’s agent Sally Long-Innes says he died Tuesday, surrounded by his family.

Vaughan’s face – if not his name – was familiar to generations of television viewers in Britain and around the world. His best-known roles included criminal Harry Grout in 1970s prison

sitcom “Porridge.”

Film appearances included “The Naked Runner,” opposite Frank Sinatra, and “The French Lieutenant’s Woman.”

Like many British actors, he gained wider fame through HBO’s “Game of Thrones.” Vaughan played blind scholar Maester Aemon on the hit fantasy series.

Born Peter Ohm in the central England county of Shropshire, Vaughan was married first to the late actress Billie Whitelaw, and then to Lillias Walker, who survives him.

Vet, author who advocated for vets, criticized war, dies

The Associated Press LUBBOCK, Texas – Luis Carlos Montalvan, a decorated Iraq war veteran who became a strong critic of the war and wrote a best-selling book about it, has died in El Paso. He was 43.

Montalvan was found in a hotel room in downtown El Paso late Friday, El Paso police Sgt. Enrique Carrillo said Monday.

The medical examiner’s office has not completed a preliminary autopsy report.

Montalvan served 17 years in the Army, doing two tours in Iraq. He received two Bronze Stars and the Purple Heart.

His service dog, Tuesday, was the subject of Montalvan’s book, which

became a New York Times best seller.

Some Army colleagues said Montalvan, who retired from the Army as a captain in 2007, embellished his account of the incident that led to his Purple Heart.

Montalvan’s book, “ UNTIL TUESDAY: A Wounded Warrior and the Golden Retriever Who Saved Him,” was praised by Sen. Al Franken of Minnesota, made him a leading advocate for wounded veterans and even led to an interview on David Letterman’s show. But several men who served with him told The Associated Press in 2011 that he had exaggerated or fabricated key events from his service abroad. The AP also obtained documents that contradicted Montalvan’s statements about the extent and severity of his injuries.

Illinois budget still elusive as leaders lash out

The Associated Press CHICAGO – As Illinois remains without a budget, legislative leaders and Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner are succeeding more at frustrating each other than at striking a deal to end an 18-month budget impasse that is damaging the state’s fiscal health every day.

The relationship between ruling Democrats, Republican leaders, and the governor has only grown more toxic after several meetings where both sides are more likely to lash out at each other than to report meaningful progress in passing a full budget that’s been overdue since July 1, 2015. The finger-pointing gives little hope legislative leaders can get a budget done by year’s end when a six-month partial spending plan expires, leaving some social service providers struggling to stay open, and colleges and universities facing an uncertain future.

Illinois to mark 75 years since attack on Pearl Harbor

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois will mark the 75th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor and honor the men and women who died there with a ceremony in Springfield.

The Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs said the event is scheduled for Wednesday at the Disabled American Veterans Hall. It will include the reading of a proclamation signed by Gov. Bruce Rauner and a wreath laying in the waters of Lake Springfield.

CHICAGO – Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel said he has spoken to President-elect Donald Trump by telephone and mentioned Chicago’s status as a sanctuary city for immigrants.

Emanuel said Trump called him to talk about the White House transition. Emanuel is a former White House chief of staff to President Barack Obama and also worked in the Clinton administration.

Emanuel spoke about the call at an unrelated event Monday. The mayor said he discussed “a range of things” with Trump.

Wisconsin woman dies in wrong-way crash in Illinois

SOUTH BELOIT – Authorities said a 78-year-old Wisconsin woman died after a wrong-way crash on Interstate 90 in northern Illinois.

Illinois State Police said the woman from Janesville was driving a car traveling east in the westbound lanes of the freeway near the South Beloit Toll Plaza in Winnebago County on Monday when she collided head-on with another vehicle. Police said the woman died at the scene.

The driver of the other vehicle, who was identified as a 25-year-old man from Loves Park, was taken to a hospital with what were described as injuries that

BOURBONNAIS – Alabama Metal Industries has informed the Illinois Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity that it plans to close its plant in Bourbonnais and lay off its 86 employees.

Tim Nugent is CEO and president of the Economic Alliance of Kankakee County. He told The Daily Journal in Kankakee that he was surprised by the news that the plant will close by Feb. 28.

Alabama Metal had told him in the summer that the company was investing $5 million in upgrades for the facility.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – President-elect Donald Trump, a political newcomer who touts his corporate skills, turned businessman-in-chief Tuesday, first demanding the government cancel a multibillion-dollar order for new presidential planes and then hailing a Japanese company’s commitment to invest billions in the U.S. “We will defend American jobs. We have to look at it almost like a war,” Trump thundered in North Carolina, vowing to keep companies from moving overseas during the second stop of his “thank you” tour to salute his supporters. “We want the next generation of innovation and production to happen right here in America.”

Trump was far less bombastic than during the tour’s kickoff in Ohio last week, striking more of the healing notes traditionally delivered by a president-to-be in the weeks after a bruising election.

“We will heal our divisions and unify our country. When Americans are unified there is nothing we cannot do – nothing!” he told the crowd in Fayetteville. “I’m asking you to dream big again as Americans. I’m asking you to believe in yourselves.”

The Republican businessman largely stuck to the script Tuesday – and, in a change, even stopped the crowd when it started to boo the media – and avoided some of the score-settling and scorched-earth rhetoric that defined his campaign and was present again last week in Cincinnati. He also repeated his vow to fortify the nation’s military and brought Marine Gen. James Mattis on stage, officially naming his choice to be Defense Secretary after teasing it last week.

Earlier in the day, Trump plainly telegraphed that when he takes office in six weeks he’ll take an interventionist role in the nation’s economy – as well as play showman when he

sees a chance. The celebrity businessman’s declaration about Air Force One caused manufacturer Boeing’s stock to drop temporarily and raised fresh questions about how his administration – not to mention his Twitter volleys – could affect the economy.

“The plane is totally out of control,” Trump told reporters in the lobby of Trump Tower. “I think Boeing is doing a little bit of a number.

We want Boeing to make a lot of money, but not that much money.” Earlier he had tweeted that the deal’s costs were “out of control, more than $4 billion. Cancel order!”

Not long after his first appearance, Trump returned to the lobby with Masayoshi Son, the CEO of SoftBank, a massive telecommunications company that counts Sprint among its holdings. Trump pointed proudly to Son’s commitment to invest $50 billion in the United States, which Trump said could create 50,000 jobs.

Trump – who also tweeted the deal – shook Son’s hand and posed for photos, reveling as he had last week when he toured a Carrier plant in Indiana where he said he had instigated an agreement that will preserve about 1,000 jobs the appliance maker had planned to move to Mexico. Details of the deal were scarce and it was unclear whether the money was part of a fund of up to $100 billion in global technology investments that SoftBank and the government of Saudi Arabia announced in October.

As for Air Force One, the government has agreed that Boeing will build two new planes, which would go into service around 2024.

That means Trump might never fly on the aircraft, which carry U.S. presidents around the globe.

The Air Force has pressed for a faster schedule, saying the aging current Boeing 747s are becoming too expensive to repair and keep in good flying shape. The overall deal for researching, developing and building new planes was to be about $3 billion, but costs have been reported to be rising.

This bill kills tax hikes VIEWS Austin Berg No one spends your money like you do.

Of course, Illinoisans are stuck with politicians deciding how some of their money is spent. Voters then hold those politicians accountable for their actions.

But what happens when they can’t?

Welcome to the lame-duck session in Illinois’ General Assembly. In this legislative purgatory, lawmakers already ousted by voters Nov. 8 can act with reckless abandon before leaving the Statehouse. To make matters worse, after Jan. 1, it only takes a simple majority vote to pass a bill.

One Illinois lawmaker on his way out of Springfield, Democrat Jack Franks of Marengo, is trying to change that. He’s introduced a constitutional amendment to protect taxpayers from unaccountable politicians during this period.

If successful, Franks’ measure would require a three-fifths supermajority vote to increase taxes during a lame-duck session. That’s 71 votes in the House and 36 in the Senate, instead of the simple majorities of 60 and 30.

That’s music to the ears of Illinoisans, who already pay the highest property taxes in the county. And it sure would have come in handy five years ago.

In 2011, Illinoisans were left helpless as defeated politicians raided family budgets for personal gain.

Twenty-four hours before the last day of legislative session in 2011, House Democrats didn’t have the votes they needed for an income-tax increase. So the horse-trading began.

Then-Gov. Pat Quinn could trade influence and employment for votes.

And House Speaker Mike Madigan had the legislative map, which he was redrawing in the wake of the 2010 Census, among other sweeteners.

Ultimately, the Illinois House voted, 60-57, to raise taxes on families and businesses. A dozen lame-duck Democrats voted “yes.” Half of those lawmakers subsequently got state jobs.

The income-tax hike took an additional $1,500 out of the average Illinois family’s budget – enough for a brandnew water heater in the cold season ahead. Franks’ proposed reform would have left Democrats 11 votes short had

it been in place.

Surprisingly, political sausage making wasn’t the worst thing about those tax hikes. Voters have come to expect such maneuvers from Illinois state government. Even more concerning was a broken decision-making process laid bare.

Regardless of the vote count, how could politicians pass the largest tax increase in modern state history in a matter of hours?

No substantive debate. No quiet deliberation. No town hall meeting. The bill was introduced, passed and signed by the governor on Jan. 12, 2011.

That problem persists.

On May 25, 2016, House Democrats introduced and passed a 500-page budget in an evening. It was $7 billion out of balance.

This sort of third-world democracy is the root problem when it comes to decisions in the General Assembly. Reforms such as Franks’, while certainly welcome, are simply addressing symptoms. The same goes for House Resolution 1494, which was proposed by Republican state Rep. David McSweeney and passed the House overwhelmingly Nov. 30. It’s nonbinding, but puts lawmakers on the record as opposing a lame-duck tax increase.

A more dramatic reform would go after “shell bills,” a favorite of Madigan and a perversion of the democratic process. Shell bills are pieces of legislation that make meaningless changes – adding and subtracting the word “and,” for example – until they don’t.

After flowing through the appropriate channels, lawmakers can add lengthy amendments to these bills at the last minute, and vote immediately after. No need to deal with those pesky committee hearings or lengthy public scrutiny.

The 2011 tax increases came out of a shell bill. So did the disastrous state budget passed earlier this year, which Gov. Bruce Rauner vetoed. Many other important pieces of legislation originated this way.

To be sure, a supermajority requirement for lame-duck tax hikes would be a major victory for Illinois taxpayers.

An even bigger win? Ending eleventh-hour decision-making in the first place.

Protecting our constitutional rights at stake

To the Editor: American exceptionalism is expressed in the Declaration of Independence and specified in the Constitution. The Declaration of Independence states: “… all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights…That to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed…”

Our rights come from God, not the state. We vote for our government, but as individuals or minority groups, we have certain rights regardless of majority opinion.

Our founders, realizing the sinfulness of humans, gave us a Constitution with three separate branches of government to provide checks and balances, which also prohibits dictatorships.

The Legislature passes laws, the Court ensures the laws confirm to the Constitution as written with original intent, and the president faithfully executes the laws. The Constitution is a living document in that it can be changed by a super majority of the legislature and/or the states.

Judges cannot legislate from the bench and the President can’t ignore enforcing laws; those who do should be impeached.

Changes to the Constitution can only come through the specified amendment process. Moral issues are to be decided by the legislature or the people in each state, not by judges.

The Electoral College ensures a simple majority cannot impose their will on all the states. This is similar to each state having two senators regardless of size, which protects minority rights.

Our Constitution prevents a president or just five judges from dictating our laws or what freedoms and rights we have.

President Barack Obama said our Constitution is flawed, meaning it doesn’t support socialism and dictatorship. He appointed two radical justices to legislate from the bench. One more Obama-type judge like Merrick Garland and we lose our Constitution and freedoms.

To the Editor: Congratulations to Joliet Area Community Hospice CEO Mary Sheehan, Jackie Bersano, Mary Ann Burns and all the Joliet Area Community Hospice Staff and volunteers for offering the very memorable Lights of Love on Nov. 23, 2106, at the Rialto Theater.

Lights of Love is an annual celebration of the lives of our loved ones and friends via a memorial tribute and tree ornament adornment and lighting.

As over 400 attendees entered the theater, the Grutzius Family Heavenly Harps presented lovely music. Guests were then welcomed by CEO Mary Sheehan. Diane Horne, a JACH music therapist, provided some moving musical selections along with a story of a client named Ellen whose wish was to bring her neighbor children and their laughter into her home.

Chaplain Rev. James McGuire then blessed the tree. All in attendance had the opportunity to adorn the tree with an ornament with the name of those they chose to remember. Diane offered additional musical tributes. JACH Director of Bereavement, Mary Ann Burns, presented the poem “The First Christmas in Heaven.” A video tribute of those remembered was then presented.

The final tribute came through the courtesy of the Joliet Fire Department Pipes and Drums.

West junior guard hits late 3 to beat ex-Central teammates

dgoss@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – With the final minute ticking down and Lincoln-Way Central holding a 66-64 lead, Lincoln-Way West put the ball exactly where everyone in the raucous Central gym expected – in the hands of Marco Pettinato.

The senior guard took about 20 seconds off the clock before penetrating into the lane. He drew the Knights defense toward him, and junior guard Austin King looked for an open spot in the left corner.

Pettinato’s pass was perfect, and King rose up and drilled the 3-point shot that put West ahead, 67-66, with 22 seconds remaining. The Knights missed a couple of close-in shots and the Warriors survived Tuesday’s SouthWest Suburban Red opener, 6866.

It was a storybook ending all the way for King.

Last season, King was a member of the sophomore team at Central. But as a Manhattan resident, after the closing of Lincoln-Way North, he transferred this fall to West.

In addition to playing on his former home floor, he made his first start for his new team. He hit 4 of 6 shots from 3-point range and totaled 13 points.

“It felt great,” King said of the decisive shot. “The fan sections for both teams was great. This was a game we really wanted to win.”

King said the play that set up his winning shot went precisely as planned.

true, however.

“Believe it or not, he earned the start today based on how he has been playing,” Flaherty said.

When it came to knocking down 3-pointers, King was one of many enjoying a huge night. In fact, the teams combined to shoot 24 of 46 on 3-pointers, 20 of 46 on 2-pointers.

Central (1-5, 0-1) finished 11 of 20 from long range. Senior guard Bryan Ross was 6 of 11 on threes and totaled 27 points. Aaron Michalak chipped in 12 points and Joe DiNaso hit three 3-pointers and scored 11.

For West (2-4, 1-0), which was 13 of 26 from long range, Pettinato hit two threes and scored 23 points. Jay Bumstead made 4 of 8 from distance and had 13 points. Lorenz scored eight, Nolan Green six and sophomore Nathan Clendenning hit a 3-pointer with 1:46 left that brought the Warriors within 66-64.

“That was a huge shot,” Curran said of Clendenning’s bomb. “If he misses and we rebound it, the game probably is entirely different.”

Indeed, West trailed, 65-58, with 2:28 left. But Clendenning hustled after a loose ball and found King for a 3-pointer with 2:01 left before hitting his own big three, and it was game back on.

The Knights were operating down the stretch without Michalak, their leader. He fouled out with 2:36 left and Central leading, 63-56.

A lot happened with him out and it was all bad.”

West’s late surge continued a theme that began early on.

The Warriors fell behind Lincoln-Way East, 18-2, last Friday night, rallied to take the lead and

then melted down the stretch in a 5845 loss.

This time, Central blew out to a 16-2 lead behind a hot-shooting start, then could not find the range for the rest of the half. Bumstead, meanwhile, caught fire, hitting four straight threes, and West closed the half on a 31-6 run for a 33-22 lead.

In the third quarter, the Knights,

with Ross leading the way, got hot again, clawing back within 47-46 after three quarters. A 13-1 run early in the fourth quarter helped Central to a pair of eight-point leads before West finished on a 15-5 run.

“This was a pattern like almost all our games so far,” Flaherty said.

“This I think was a situation where both teams, when they got up a little, they played a little back on their heels.

“They [Knights] played a great game overall, though. That Michalak kid is as tough as nails.”

Although the area wrestling season has just started, there’s already been plenty of encouraging results that point to another exciting season for local competitors.

Lockport entered the year ranked 20th nationally and has won all 13 of its dual meets, which includes a decisive victory over another top-ranked Class 3A team, Mount Carmel.

Last weekend, Providence Catholic knocked off a Montini squad that was nationally ranked, while Lincoln-Way West followed up on a big win over Sandburg by losing a close decision to three-time defending Class 3A champ Oak Park and River Forest, who’s also nationally ranked.

Here’s a closer look at some of the returning sectional and state qualifiers from area teams.

Bolingbrook: Dylan Burnoski (126 pounds), who placed sixth last year as a freshman, and sectional qualifier Isaiah Herrera (220) are the top returners for coach Dan Bullivant’s Raiders.

Coal City: The Coalers return several top performers from last year’s Class 1A runner-up. Jake Hiles (120) took fourth last year while Alex Friddle (113) was fifth for coach Mark Master’s team. Ryan Wasielewski (132), T.J. Jezik (138), Danny Norton (160), Bryan Stopka (182) and Brock Crawford (195) all were state qualifiers a year ago.

Joliet West: Coach Chuck Rumpf’s Tigers return three sectional qualifiers, Austin Poch (120), Josh Durrly (145) and Robert Ford (285).

Lemont: Coach John St. Clair’s Indians return two three-year state qualifiers, Egan Berta (145), who was a state runner-up a year ago, and Jake Kirkman (152). Damyen Gothard (170) also qualified for state last season. Jack Leffler (113) also was a sectional qualifier.

Lincoln-Way Central: Noah Upchurch (182) is the lone sectional qualifier returning for coach Jason DePolo’s Knights from last season, while Jason Stokes (126) also qualified for sectionals last year while at Lincoln-Way East.

Sox’s rebuild off to roaring start

The wrecking ball took a mighty swing Tuesday.

The White Sox firmly announced their intention of a teardown and a rebuild by trading ace Chris Sale to the Red Sox VIEWS for second baseman Rick Yoan MonMorrissey cada, one of the top prospects in baseball, and 20-year-old pitcher Michael Kopech, whose fastball has been clocked at 105 mph. Two other Boston prospects are included in the deal.

Good for the Sox. Now let’s see if they know anything about new construction.

And good for Sale, who goes to a franchise that has figured out how to win regularly and not, say, once every 88 years. Now let’s see whether the Red Sox’s uniforms are up to his keen fashion sense.

The Sale trade should be the first of many swings for the Sox, who need to remove all rubble and build from the ground up. They went the veteran route after winning a World Series in 2005, and they went nowhere. If Sale, who finished in the top six in American League Cy Young Award voting each of the past five seasons, can be traded, anybody can be traded. And

should be traded. Jose Quintana, Todd Frazier, Jose Abreu, Adam Eaton – anybody and everybody. The Sox are open for business.

“We’re definitely open-minded on ways to continue the process that we started (Tuesday),” general manager Rick Hahn said. “It’s conceivable more comes together here, or it may take a few more weeks on some fronts, and conceivably into the season as well – we don’t view this as a quick fix.”

Moncada is so talented that the Red Sox promoted him from Double-A to the big leagues last season, but he struggled upon arrival, striking out 12 times in 20 plate appearances. That included nine straight whiffs to end the season. But he’s only 21, and he signed with the Red Sox out of Cuba in 2015.

Starting in Triple-A next season would be the prudent way to go.

This is going to take time, if done properly. And it’s going to hurt. There might be three years of pain before anyone knows whether the prospects can play and if the plan, lower case, works. Stock up on Advil, Sox fans.

The initial reaction is to say that Hahn just bought himself at least three more years of job security, but anyone who has watched the way Sox Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf does business knows that job security comes with walking through the door for

your first day of work.

We still don’t have a firm grasp on who is running the show – Hahn or vice president Ken Williams – but whoever it is had better have a sharp eye for talent during the rebuilding process. It helps that Boston, one of the best organizations in baseball, already has done some of the work for the Sox. Just because Moncada won Baseball America’s Minor League Player of the Year award last season doesn’t mean he’s a sure thing. But it turned out to be the case with the Cubs and Kris Bryant, the 2014 award winner.

Sox fans probably are sick of hearing about the Cubs, but their team is being judged by their crosstown rivals’ World Series success. And now that the Sox are going through what appears to be a Cubs-like rebuild, the judging will be even more intense.

Hahn talked Tuesday about building for sustained success. Sound familiar?

The Cubs have looked to the Red Sox for almost everything they’ve done the past five years, from hiring president Theo Epstein to renovating an old ballpark. So maybe the White Sox simply were following form by dealing with Boston. And perhaps the Red Sox’s acquisition of Sale is a response to the Cubs’ success under Epstein, their former employee. Oh,

it’s a tangled web.

Sale is a package deal: He’s great, and he’s a few degrees off center. A jerky delivery from a stick-figure physique and a 95 mph fastball makes him very difficult to hit. But he also made headlines last season by cutting up teammates’ throwback jerseys before a game because he found them uncomfortable. And an irate Sale chose to plant his flag in the ground over the Sox’s decision to cut back on the bizarre presence of Adam LaRoche’s 14-year-old son in the clubhouse. The Red Sox best handle him with care.

Sale gets a chance to win now, and the White Sox, their fingers crossed, hope to win in a few years. It’s no fun watching a team tank to get a higher draft position, but this is how business is done now. For White Sox fans, it’s their penance for the sin of watching mediocre baseball for so long. In turn, the Sox have to understand that all the empty seats of past seasons now will have company.

The Sale trade is just the beginning. There’s more work to do. Let’s hope Hahn and Williams don’t look at a hammer and say, “What’s this thing?”

Sale traded to Red Sox, who’s the next big name to move?

The Associated Press OXON HILL, Md. – The Cubs could use a closer, Texas needs a center fielder, most every team wants an extra arm.

So now that Chris Sale got traded, baseball executives are trying to figure out who’s next.

Andrew McCutchen still is available, maybe the Tigers really would deal Miguel Cabrera or Justin Verlander.

Kansas City reliever Wade Davis is attracting interest, perhaps Cincinnati speedster Billy Hamilton might be on the go.

“It’s incredible, the different directions that our conversations in the suite go,” Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said.

Boston made a big splash at the winter meetings Tuesday, getting Sale.

The AL East champion Red Sox sent a package of four prospects including high-priced and highly talented hitter Yoan Moncada to the White Sox for the All-Star ace.

The Red Sox also acquired top setup man Tyler Thornburg from Milwaukee for third baseman Travis Shaw and two minor leaguers, and neared a deal with free agent first baseman Mitch Moreland.

More could be in the works, too.

“I think we’re open to free agency and I think we’re also open to making trades,” said Boston president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski, fittingly wearing red socks.

Kyle Schwarber, of course, isn’t going anywhere. The Cubs slugger completed a remarkable comeback from a knee injury in April by bashing his way to a World Series championship.

Creative manager Joe Maddon sees something interesting in the future for Schwarber – as in, maybe the leadoff spot after Dexter Fowler became a free agent.

“Schwarber is not a bad name. Kyle is not a bad name at all,” Maddon said.

“Two years ago, I considered leading Kyle off and putting Dexter second. But I had all the dudes do all the work. All our

nerds did all the work and they really liked Fowler one and liked Schwarber two just based on the data,” he said. “So I went with that and it worked out well.”

Fowler, meanwhile, would make a nice fit in St. Louis.

“I know about Dexter,” manager Mike Matheny said. “Yeah, there’s no question that he’s one of the guys out there that not just the Cardinals but other teams are interested in.”

“I’m always available for whatever the recruiting process needs,” he said.

No movement yet on star closers Aroldis Chapman and Kenley Jansen, though the New York Yankees are looking at both.

The Yankees already are facing the prospect of seeing Sale a lot next year after this trade put him in the same division. Sale bolstered a Red Sox rotation that also features recent AL Cy Young winner Rick Porcello, former award winner David Price and All-Star knuckleballer Steven Wright.

“That’s a big one. That’s a blockbuster. That was a wow,” Yankees general

manager Brian Cashman said. “Obviously they gave up a lot and they got a lot.”

“Boston’s like the Golden State Warriors now in baseball. They got their (Kevin) Durant and their (Draymond) Green and (Klay) Thompson and (Stephen) Curry,” he said.

Mets GM Sandy Alderson said he thought the Sale trade might cause the rest of the trade market “to start to loosen up a bit.”

Either way, the Mets figure to have a new face in spring training next year – Tim Tebow.

Manager Terry Collins said he’d like to put the former NFL quarterback into a few exhibition games, even though Tebow still has a long path in his transition to playing baseball.

The 29-year-old aspiring outfielder hit .194 in the Arizona Fall League, striking out 20 times in 70 plate appearances.

“Our players, they’re athletes, too.

CHICAGO – Marian Hossa had two goals, Scott Darling made 22 saves and the Blackhawks beat the Arizona Coyotes, 4-0, on Tuesday night to snap a two-game slide.

Artem Anisimov and Dennis Rasmussen also scored to help the Hawks maintain a three-point lead over St. Louis in the Central Division.

Darling made a handful of tough stops but wasn’t heavily tested in his first shutout this season and third of his career. He started his third straight game in place of No. 1 goalie Corey Crawford, who had an appendectomy in Philadelphia on Saturday.

The 37-year-old Hossa scored his team-leading 13th and 14th goals in his 27th game – surpassing his total of 13 last season in 64 contests.

Former Bear, Heisman winner Salaam found dead in Colorado

Former Bears running back and Heisman Trophy winner Rashaan Salaam was found dead Monday night in a Boulder park less than two miles from Folsom Field, where he carved his name into the University of Colorado record books as one of the greatest players in the program’s history.

The Boulder County coroner’s office still was investigating the cause of the death of the 42-year-old Salaam, who won the

Heisman in 1994. The body of the onetime running back was found at Eben G. Fine Park in Boulder. Police say foul play was not suspected.

Salaam’s death stunned the Colorado football community, which this year celebrated a revival with a 10-3 record, an appearance in the Pac-12 championship game and the Buffaloes’ first bowl bid in almost a decade.

Illinois survives scare from IUPUI, 85-77

CHAMPAIGN – Malcolm Hill scored 23 of his 32 points in the second half to help Illinois hold off IUPUI, 85-77, on Tuesday night.

Illinois (7-3) shot 55 percent from the field and 7 of 16 from 3-point range.

The Illini opened with a 10-0 run but committed eight turnovers, allowing IUPUI to rally to a, 42-41, halftime lead.

Mike Thorne Jr. hit a jumper, Hill dunked and Illinois pulled ahead in the second half by shooting 60 percent from the field.

Leron Black scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds. He was a presence throughout the game, including a key rebound with 23 seconds left, despite battling foul trouble.

Matt O’Leary led IUPUI (3-6) with 25 points, shooting 7 of 15 from the field and 4 of 9 from beyond the arc.

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan – Tobias Harris scored 22 points and the Detroit Pistons beat the Bulls, 102-91, on Tuesday night.

Andre Drummond added 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Pistons, who won for the fourth time in five games.

Jimmy Butler scored 32 points and Dwyane Wade added 19 points and seven assists for the Bulls, which lost its third straight. The Bulls were playing their fourth game in five nights and struggled in the fourth quarter.

Drummond dominated early, scoring 10 points on three dunks and two tips. Even when he went to the bench with foul trouble, the Pistons put together an 11-0 run to lead 36-21 early in the second quarter.

Rajon Rondo had 10 points in his return to the Bulls lineup.

Detroit maintained a double-digit lead for most of the second period, but the Bulls rallied after Reggie Jackson picked up his third foul. The Pistons were ahead 51-44 at the half, thanks to a 16-6 edge on points off turnovers.

By MYSTERY DINER JOLIET – Al’s Steak House & Banquets serves the best steak in the world.

So said a friend of mine, an international traveler. I can’t vouch for “best in the world,” but I can say Al’s Steak House consistently serves an excellent charbroiled steak – hand cut daily by the restaurant’s chefs, according to Al’s website.

I was so pleased with my first steak, I returned several more times and ordered the same entree.

According to its website, Al’s Steak House & Banquets was established in 1959, making it one of Joliet’s first upscale dining restaurants. The banquet rooms, which can accommodate 15 to 150 people, were formerly a lounge where live bands played.

The restaurant also hand cuts its chops, has fresh fish delivered daily, and offers a variety of specials, an elaborate salad bar, and Sunday brunch, the website states.

I love filet mignon, medium rare.

Each time I went to Al’s, I ordered the 8-ounce version and received perfection. Because I feel a really great steak should rule the meal, I round out my

entree with a simple green salad from the salad bar and a baked potato.

Despite having no room for dessert, on my most recent trip to Al’s I couldn’t pass up the rich and creamy cheesecake, topped with a strawberry and raspberry sauce. I would have preferred more fresh fruit and less sauce, but that’s me.

My companion ordered the broiled salmon, which was free of bones and cooked a perfect medium. It was well-seasoned – as was the rice pilaf accompanying it – with a hint of lemon.

For dessert, my companion ordered tiramisu, which this person said was “well-soaked with a nice alcohol.” Its texture was light and rich in all the right places. Like the appetizer, the portion was generous. Two people

could easily share one piece.

I should mention we did start the meal with an appetizer: the combination platter. This consisted of generous portions of zucchini, mushrooms, onion rings, ribs, shrimp, garlic bread, mini tacos and mini burritos, almost a feast unto itself.

And by the way, the coffee is really good, too.

Sometimes, I can provide answers right away. But sometimes, I have to stop and reassess. Medicine has seen many breakthroughs since I graduated from medical school nearly 20 years ago, and evidence has changed many dogmatic ways of practice.

Objective, non-biased data are important to the practice of medicine. Doctors must understand how that data can be applied to one person or to large groups of people.

You’ve already met my colleagues Dr. Eve Glazier and Dr. Elizabeth Ko and learned about their approach to health and wellness. My column focuses on common sense answers based on scientific literature. As I increase my professional knowledge, I hope to provide people with thoughtful and deliberate interpretations of medical science people can use to direct their own health.

Dear Doctor: I enjoy a nice glass of wine at the end of the day, but I’ve heard various reports about its health risks. So, tell me: In women, does alcohol increase or decrease the chances of premature death?

Dear Reader: It depends on the amount.

The most definitive study on this topic was done in 1995. It looked at more than

One drink a day was linked to an 11 percent decrease in death rates. However, more than one drink a day increased death rates, compared to no alcohol at all.

For women, the greatest benefits of alcohol were in the link to reductions of stroke and heart attacks. Yet, as women increase their alcohol intake, the risk of cancer increases. In this study, there was a significant correlation between having two or more drinks a day and breast cancer.

In short, alcohol does have benefits when it comes to lifespan, but those benefits vanish when a woman has two or more drinks a day.

Dear Abby: My DEAR ABBY husband of five years has conJeanne fessed to affairs Phillips that resulted in two children. I suspected something was up when after a year of marriage he seemed distant. Despite our almost 15-year age difference, I never in a million years thought he would do something like this.

A few months ago, he started disappearing again. At first it was a day here and a day there, but then it became weeks. I finally confronted him, and he confessed about the affairs. He claims the mother of the newborn is a prostitute and it was a “mistake.” He wants to be involved in the 3-year-old little girl’s life, but not the newborn’s. I told him he needed to leave and remove his belongings from the house.

My friends say legally I can’t put him out of a house he owned before we were married. However, he did buy a home during our marriage.

I feel I am entitled to something. I asked him to have the older child’s mother move, but he refused. Where does that leave me? With nothing?

Richard Thompson, one of the greatest-ever guitarists, wrote a song called “The Hots for the Smarts” that, sadly, has never been released on an album. But Augie Boehm’s latest book, “Bridge Smarts” (HNB Publishing), made me think of it.

Boehm, who often takes part in duplicates with inexperienced clients, offers insights into key aspects of playing better -- hand evaluation and defense being at the top of the list.

The opening lead on this deal would be easy for an expert, but missed by many less-experienced players. Look at the West hand and the auction. What should he lead against four hearts?

West’s negative double showed exactly four spades and six-plus points. His three-diamond rebid was game-invitational. But the strange action was South’s jump to four hearts.

One moment, he passed over two hearts; the next, he jumped to game after no further encouragement from partner. What is the explanation?

Assuming South is a competent player, he must have length and weakness in diamonds. After West bid three diamonds, South knew that his partner had a singleton or a void and he could ruff his diamond losers on the board.

To cut down those ruffs, West must lead his trump. (Note that dummy rates to have only three hearts.

With four and a diamond shortage, he would have bid three hearts over three diamonds.)

Then East must play his part, leading another round of hearts when in with a high diamond. South will lose one spade, one heart and two diamonds.

9. Closing shall take place within the time and upon the terms provided in the Contract for Sale. A finalized Contract for Sale shall be completed between the parties no later than 30 days after bid acceptance. A copy of the Contract for Sale to be entered into by the Board of Education and the successful bidder shall be available for inspection at the Administrative Offices of the Board of Education.
