Hegeler-Carus Mansion – LaSalle With the coming of the railroads in the mid-19th century, the town of LaSalle quickly developed as a transportation hub. The Illinois Central, Rock Island, LaSalle and Bureau County, and the Chicago Quincy and Burlington railroads all had trunk lines through the county.

The Illinois and Michigan Canal and the railroads soon would help spur the growth of the downtown business district.

In addition to commercial storefronts, banks and hotels, there were other newly established industries that came into the region, including coal mining, textiles and glass and brick manufacturing. One unique industry that came to town was zinc production.

Frederick W. Matthiessen and Edward Hegeler had come west from Pennsylvania in the mid-1850s in search of a suitable site for their zinc-works and found the town of LaSalle a perfect location as it offered a shipping point on the I&M Canal, which connected Chicago with the Illinois River near the town.

In 1858, the Matthiessen and Hegeler Zinc Company was established in LaSalle and would become one of the country’s largest producers of zinc, a material later used for production of armaments during the Civil War. The zinc production and smelting facilities were located on high land at Sterling and Eighth streets.

To keep watch of his growing company, Edward Hegeler soon commissioned a 57-room Second Empire mansion on a 3-acre site near the factory that offered a beautiful landscaped environment.

Designed by architect William W. Boyington and constructed in 1874-75, the mansion soon would dominate the large lot on Seventh Street. Boyington, a prominent architect, was best known in Chicago for his design of the Water Tower.

The elaborate interior decoration of the Hegeler-Carus Mansion is the work of August Fiedler, a talented German-American who had a reputation for interior design and furniture-making. While Fiedler was hired to design many interiors in Chicago,

science and religion. To assist in his endeavor, Hegeler hired German scholar Dr. Paul Carus to serve as managing editor.

During his lifetime, Carus would write 75 books and nearly 1,500 articles and is credited with introducing Buddhism to the western world through his text The Gospel of Buddha According to Old Records. Carus married the Hegelers’ daughter, Mary, in 1888.

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – It wasn’t clear whether Santa came on his sleigh or one of the two race cars at his side, but he was in Victory Lane at Chicagoland Speedway.

Race fans and others got a chance to visit Chicagoland Speedway for pictures with Santa, make winter crafts, hear a Christmas story and even get a snowshoe demonstration Saturday.

For some, it was their first time at the track.

“Big,” Mia Jacobs, 13, of Chicago, said when asked her impression of Chicagoland Speedway.

“It’s cool because Santa’s here,”

said her sister, Kayla, 9.

For their grandmother, Cheryl Larsen of Evanston, it was cool to have her grandchildren with her at the racetrack.

“I love NASCAR, and this is the first time they came to the track with me,” Larsen said. “I just wanted them to come so I could show them what I like to do.”

Even speedway regulars found the visit to the track a unique experience.

“It’s nice being in the infield like this and being in the Media Center,” said John Cox of Lockport, who brought his grandson, Griffin, 3. “It’s nice that they open the doors for an event like this.”

It was a slower pace than what fans experience on Race Weekend. Instead of the deafening sound of racing engines, holiday music wafted in the air of the otherwise empty speedway.

“These are fun events,” said Terry McGraw, the Speedway photographer

who was shooting the photos with Santa.

While the only race cars were parked as props for Santa photos, the event did reflect the spirit of racing in another way, McGraw said.

“To me, it’s all about family. It’s all about people. That’s what racing is,” he said.

Sandy Bayer of Joliet came with about a dozen relatives, many of them visiting from Decorah, Iowa.

“It gives us a little something to do,” Bayer said. “This group likes NASCAR, so it’s good to see the inside of a track.”

‘She never passed up a hot dog stand’ Jeff Reid recently opened Jerrie’s Dogs & Fries in memory of his mother

JOLIET – “I want to make my business as amazing as my mother.”

Lofty ambitions, indeed.

The business is Jerrie’s Dogs & Fries, which Jeff Reid – the owner of Double J Sports Bar in Joliet – opened shortly before Thanksgiving in his mother’s memory.

Jeff’s mother, Jeraldine L. “Jer Jer” or “Jerrie” Reid of Joliet, raised four children as a single mother while working multiple jobs. Jerrie continued working during chemotherapy and radiation for breast cancer.

“She’d drive herself to treatments so she wouldn’t have to bother us kids,” Jeff said. “She was a marvelous woman.”

Jerrie was 73 when she died on Oct. 29, 2013, but she worked into the summer before her death, Jeff said.

She didn’t financially need the money, Jeff said. It’s the way Jerrie was.

“That’s what kept her going,” Jeff said.

During the years Jerrie raised Jeff and his three siblings – Jeanene Read, Jodi Krzeminski of Joliet and James Reid of Lockport – in their Romeoville home, Jerry worked a variety of jobs, including office work

for several doctors, Jerry said.

She was working at Unitel Communication at the time of her 2013 retirement, Jeff said.

At one point in Jeff’s childhood, Jerrie even worked from 3 to 11 p.m.

“She’d get us kids off to school in the morning, but she’d have dinner ready for us before she went to work,” Jeff said.

Sunday afternoon that Grundy County could see another 1 to 3 inches of snow on top of the already estimated 6 inches of snow that fell throughout the day.

Ben Deubelbeiss, with the weather service, said area snow falls included 4.5 inches in Oswego, 7 inches in Plano and 6.5 inches in Marseilles on Sunday.

Morris Mayor Richard Kopczick said the public works department had been working diligently to get the roads safe for travel.

“It’s a little bit earlier than we’d like to have seen,” Kopczick said. “Public works is out there now trying to keep the roads safe not only for our citizens but also for the first responders who are working in this [snowfall].”

Deubelbeiss said temperatures are expected to stay in the upper 20s or low 30s overnight and may warm up Monday into the upper 30s, allowing for some of the snow to melt before colder temperatures reach the area Wednesday.

The next front is due through Grundy County on Tuesday and may drop a wintry mix on the area before temperatures drop to the lower 20s and teens for the rest of the week.

“She gave to anyone that needed anything,” Jeff said. “That’s the way it was growing up in Romeoville.

If no one had anything, they would come over and borrow milk, sugar, flour, toilet paper – yes, my mother gave toilet paper, that happened.”

In 2001, Jerrie moved to Joliet to be closer to her children, Jeff said.

Jerrie would stop in at Double J after work to help in the kitchen and make sure the bathrooms were clean.

Jerrie never drank and hardly ate any of the food, but people knew her, Jeff added.

“She’d come in and people would say, ‘Oh, hi, Mom,’ ” Jeff said. “She was always there, greeting people and helping people.”

Through the years, Jeff owned a number of businesses in Joliet, he said. But Jerrie used to tell him, “You should open a butcher shop or a hot dog stand.” Jerrie simply thought a butcher shop would be profitable, Jeff said.

But a hot dog stand?

“She never passed up a hot dog stand, ever,” Jeff said. “And that’s the truth.”

This last was a childhood mainstay for Jeff and his siblings.

“We grew up on it because we were so poor,” Jeff said. “She’d make it for us in a frying pan.”

It’s been selling well, Jeff said, mostly to the older generation who also recall fried bologna from their youth. It features thick slices of bologna along with mayonnaise, lettuce and tomato on white or wheat bread or toast, he said.

Of course, the signature hot dog is the Jerrie dog, prepared the way Jerrie liked her hot dog – topped with mustard, tomato, relish, pickle, cucumber, sport peppers and celery salt.

“A lot of people have never been snowshoeing, so we demonstrate it,” said Ben Hecke of the forest preserve District. Because there was no snow, he brought a foam substitute to demonstrate how a snowshoe distributes body weight so the foot does not sink into snow.

Will County Children’s Advocacy Center raising funds

Shaw Media correspondent During 2016, about 425 children walked through the doors of the Will County Children’s Advocacy Center after a life-altering sexual or physical abuse incident. Once these children walked through the doors, a team of advocates worked together with the child to find justice.

In 1992, Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow was elected into office and noticed how sexual abuse cases never went well because the children in the case had been interviewed by multiple people, and stories varied depending who performed the interviews.

He decided to do something about the injustice and began the advocacy center in 1995.

“When you have multiple people interview, the child will not be precise each time because the people doing the interviews ask different questions. This is deadly in a court room,” Glasgow said.

He said that all statements by the child are available to the defense, and if there are different statements from the same child on the witness stand, a conviction will be unlikely.

The child meets with a trained forensic interviewer, while the assistant state’s attorney, a representative from the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services and local law enforcement listen and watch from another room.

“The key is to offer a neutral, non-suggestive interview. If we can get a solid statement of the child on tape, the case usually doesn’t go to trial – it usually goes into a plea deal, and the conviction rate is high,” Glasgow said.

After the interview, the advocacy center offers a free medical exam, if needed, and counseling for the child.

Beth Kasper, Will County Children’s Advocacy Center operations manager, said there has been an uptick in children who have come to the center, but it’s a positive shift.

“I think it’s because of Erin’s Law being taught in schools in the past couple of years. Children now know about inappropriate touch and that it’s not a dirty little secret, it needs to be talked about,” Kasper said.

One grant received has been through the United Way of Will County. Mike Hennessy, president and CEO of the UWWC, said one in three people in Will County seek assistance from its 109 funded programs from its 46 agency partners in the county.

“It’s important to help address the health and human services our residents need. You never know what tomorrow will bring,” Hennessey said.

Hennessey also stated that last year, donations to the UWWC were down 8 percent, but most agencies said they saw a 15 percent increase of people in need of services.

Kasper said the $39,000 received from the UWWC funds the forensic interviewing program, intake/family advocacy and behavior health advocate.

The largest fundraiser for the advocacy center has been the Men Who Cook event held at Chicago Pipefitters

Free plots at Joliet Park District’s organic garden available to vets 9 JOLIET – There are already free, open garden plots available to veterans for the 2017 growing season at the Joliet Park District’s Organic Community Garden.

It’s the third year for the collaborative project between the Joliet Park District and the Will County Land Use Department’s Resource Recovery and Energy Division, which attracted a handful of veterans to gardening plots in each of the first two years. But program leaders are hoping for growth.

Applications for free 10-foot by 10foot plots at the garden, located at 3200 McDonough St., are available for Will County veterans.

Joliet Park District Organic Community Garden coordinator Kristen Bernier said the county reached out to the park district a few years ago for a partnership at the garden, which has been open about six years. The Land Use Department and the Joliet Park District split 50-50 the costs associated with the plots.

“It’s a great program and opportunity for the veteran community,” Bernier said. “Gardening is good for the

health and a win for everybody in the community.”

South of Inwood Golf Course, the 9-acre parcel is home to 170 to 230 garden plots, depending on the year.

Pecora also is coordinator of the We WILL Grow School and Community Garden Program, which helped acquire a grant to bolster the “Victory Garden” at the Warren-Sharpe Community Center.

The produce from that project helps feed people in the surrounding neighborhood, which is a federally designated “food desert” – a low-income urban neighborhood where most residents do not have convenient and easy access to fresh, healthy and affordable food.

transportation.

Three candidates were interviewed in the past two weeks and will have to pass through a certification process in Springfield on Dec. 15. The county formed a search committee in October,

which then conducted the interviews in executive session.

The committee interviewed Jeffrey Ronaldson, the department’s current assistant engineer. Brent Porfilio, an engineer who served on the city of Lock-

port Planning and Zoning Commission, and William Raffensperger, an engineer with the Illinois Department of Transportation, also interviewed for the job.

Will County concludes interviews for transportation department head opening

Community group helps struggling friends VIEWS Kris Stadalsky When a resident of Shorewood Glen’s community is struggling, be it a health issue, the loss of a loved one or some other type of life-altering change, their spirits may be lifted a bit by the delivery of a special prayer quilt to help them get through the rough times.

The idea of helping within their own community came from a project some were already involved in – making blankets for children in Will County who need a special hug through Project Linus. Perhaps a child involved in an unhealthy domestic situation or sick in the hospital.

The very first prayer quilt made by the group had blank patches sewn all over so the recipient’s friends could write a special message. A lot of people knew and loved the recipient and wanted to make it a personal gift while he was ill.

The second quilt the group made had a patriotic theme as the recipient was in the Air National Guard.

Each quilt is made with the recipient’s personality and loves in mind, said group coordinator Len Erdahl.

There are a several people making quilts in the Shorewood Glen community for the project, but there are five neighborhoods within the community. So Erdahl is assigned to meeting with representatives of the neighborhoods and finding out who has a need.

Before the quilts are delivered, a prayer group is held, and residents gather to tie the knots that hold the quilt together, and as they do so they say prayers for the recipient.

“Twelve or 15 people get together to talk and pray over the quilt,” Erdahl

said. “That period of time is special; it’s how we get to know each other.”

“We are approaching 100 quilts that we have given out,” said incoming group president Ellen Sterrett.

Judging from the letters the quilting group has received, the project is not only successful but means a lot to the recipients and their families. One wife wrote that her husband, an Army veteran, was moved that so many people had prayed over the quilt he received after he suffered a stroke.

Both the prayer quilt group and Project Linus are offshoots of the Shorewood Glen Service Group (or SG2), which gets involved in all sorts of projects in Shorewood and the county to help others.

Becky Hall of Shorewood Glen works directly with Project Linus to serve unfortunate children all over Will County. In the first six years, the group made 1,106 blankets. This year they added another 260 fleece blankets, 50 quilts and 35 baby afghans – all for Project Linus. That’s a lot of kids needing a special hug.

They also provide a supply of their blankets to fire and police departments in Will County, in the event officers encounter kids in domestic violence cases who have to leave home with nothing, or a child who has lost everything in a house fire.

Erdahl credits Ruthie Herman for starting the prayer quilt group and getting things coordinated.

Now the prayer quilt project takes the whole community to coordinate, assemble, sew and pray over to continue that success.

“Putting the prayer quilts together is a process the entire Shorewood Glenn community can be part of,” he said.

Meat truck catches fire on Route 53 in Elwood

ELWOOD – A truck driver lost everything when his truck caught fire Friday on Route 53 in Elwood.

Police Chief Fred Hayes said the incident occurred at 7:30 a.m. while the semi-tractor was traveling north on Route 53 shortly before Hoff Road.

“The driver, David Olson, 43, said he heard a loud noise then spotted flames before he hit the brakes,” Hayes said.

Olson was able to escape with minor injuries, but the cab was soon engulfed in flames, which were extinguished by firefighters from Elwood and Wilmington.

The truck was loaded with frozen meat products that had been picked up from a warehouse in Wilmington for delivery to California.

All northbound lanes were closed while the fire was being put out, and traffic was redirected, Hayes said. Olson refused medical treatment.

“Mr. Olson said he had been using the truck as his living quarters and lost all of his personal belongings in the fire,” Hayes said.

Plainfield North power outage cancels Sunday activities

A power outage at Plainfield North High School, caused by an electrical transformer issue, continued throughout the day Sunday but were not expected to affect the school day on Monday.

That outage caused the cancellation or postponement of all activities at the school on Sunday, including the madrigal dinner scheduled for Sunday night. The school will look for a date to reschedule some version of the performance.

“We expect that the repairs will be done tonight and school will not be impacted tomorrow. We will update you as soon as possible if this changes,” district spokesman Tom Hernandez wrote on Sunday. “Otherwise, please plan for school to be open and normal operations on Monday.”

Born June 23, 1956 in Joliet, IL to the late Frank and Irene (nee King) Smolik. She graduated from Gardner-South Wilmington High School in 1974 and soon after married John Bohac on October 12, 1974. Patricia enjoyed gardening.

She also loved spending time with her grandchildren and watching them play sports.

12 Olympic diver Sammy Lee dies at 96 The ASSOCIATED PRESS LOS ANGELES – Sammy Lee, a twotime Olympic gold medal-winning diver who later mentored four-time Olympic diving champion Greg Louganis, has died. He was 96.

The University of Southern California said Saturday that Lee died Friday of pneumonia in Newport Beach. He was the school’s oldest living Olympian.

The 5-foot Lee, who was of Korean descent, was the first Asian-American to win an Olympic gold medal for the U.S. Lee became the first man to win consecutive Olympic titles in platform diving in 1948 and 1952 and was the oldest diver at age 32 to win Olympic gold. He also earned a bronze in 3-meter springboard at the 1948 Games.

Lee later coached Olympic diving champions Pat McCormick and Louganis, who swept the springboard and platform events at the 1984 and ’88 Olympics. Lee coached the U.S. team at the 1960 and ‘64 Olympics.

He remained an active swimmer and

golfer into his 90s.

Lee was the AAU national champion in platform and springboard diving in 1942, becoming the first person of color to win a national diving title, and in platform in 1946. He won the 1953 Sullivan Award as the nation’s top amateur athlete.

He was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1968 and U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame in 1990.

After attending Occidental College in Los Angeles, he graduated from the USC School of Medicine in 1947 and became an ear, nose and throat physician. He served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps in the Korean War. Sammy Lee Square in Los Angeles’ Koreatown section was named in his honor in 2010. In 2013, the Los Angeles Unified School District named one of its elementary schools the Dr. Sammy Lee Medical and Health Sciences Magnet School.

Lee is survived by his wife, Roz, children Pamela and Sammy II and three grandchildren.

It’s a critical time for the county when it comes to transportation.

The county is one agency involved in the new Interstate 55/Weber Road interchange. It’s also pursuing funding for improvements to Interstate 80 and its interchanges. Some officials have discussed potential widening of

Interstate 55 south toward the Wilmington and Coal City areas.

The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – Homeless shelters in Illinois and low-income college students who rely on state funds are facing another year of financial uncertainty as Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and majority Democratic lawmakers remain unable to make progress on resolving a budget war.

Several meetings during the past month have only served to prove how far apart the two sides are: Rauner, a former venture capitalist who took office two years vowing to overhaul how the state is managed, continues to insist Democrats pass part of his pro-business agenda, while they say he should focus on a budget deal without pre-conditions.

The money lawmakers approved as part of a six-month spending plan in June is about to run out, but they adjourned for the year Thursday without agreeing with the governor on a plan going forward. That means social service providers, like programs that deliver meals for homebound seniors and homeless shelters, will start the new year without state support. Some have already exhausted their budget reserves.

U of Illinois chancellor reviews emergency plans

URBANA – University of Illinois Chancellor Robert Jones said he’s confident the university has effective plans to deal with an emergency like this week’s carand-knife attack at Ohio State University that left 11 people injured and the attacker dead.

Jones offered public condolences to Ohio State University on Monday and said he planned to reach out to Ohio State’s president, Michael Drake, to offer support, The News-Gazette reported.

Jones said he met with University of Illinois Police Chief Jeff Christensen and other top administrators a couple of weeks ago to review campus emergency plans and was pleased with the procedures in place, particularly that it’s clear who would be in

Purple Christmas lights honor ‘Purple Rain’ singer

PARK RIDGE – An acclaimed home Christmas-light show in Park Ridge features purple lights this year in a tribute to the rock star who sang “Purple Rain.”

The Chicago Tribune reported that the Grant-Grusecki home decided to add the Prince tribute shortly after the Minnesota-based artist died of an opioids overdose in April. Among Prince’s many hits was the song “Purple Rain.”

Tina Grusecki said the family spends much of the year designing the elaborate show. It includes flashing lights synchronized to music that passing cars can hear on a radio channel. The show includes standards, such as “Holly Jolly Christmas” and “All Alone on Christmas.”

The Prince tribute has a medley of his songs, an illuminated drum kit – and

state workers. Every day that passes Illinois is going into debt – about $500 million a month, according to the state comptroller – because the court orders are forcing the state to spend more money than it’s collecting in taxes.

However, those court orders don’t cover higher education institutions and some social service programs. That has prompted some providers to close their doors and layoffs in higher education.

“They’re all going to be in the same pickle they were in last year,” said Rep. Elaine Nekritz, a Democrat from Buffalo Grove.

The six-month budget provided some relief, but some of that money went to cover debts that social service providers had incurred during the past 18 months. Colleges have received about two-thirds of the funding they typically get from the state and have no money for tuition grants for low-income students this semester or the next.

The Peoples Church of Chicago runs a shelter for the homeless that is scheduled to close by the end of December because it hasn’t received state support for over a year, said Dick Simpson, a member of the board that oversees the shelter. Nearly 80 people rely on the shelter on a daily basis and they’ll have to find help elsewhere.

Ukulele is a popular music-class addition

SPRINGFIELD – Dave Kinzer’s music class is jamming to the Beatles, Creedence Clearwater Revival and Matishyahu – on ukulele.

The 15-year veteran teacher told the (Springfield) State Journal-Register that his students at Springfield’s Ball Charter School stay focused on lessons because they are busy with the instruments in their hands.

Kinzer was awarded a $2,200 grant to buy 27 of the four-string instruments.

The teacher focuses on an instrument each year. He said he might ditch the recorder, xylophone or piano in the future because of the kids’ strumming success.

Students were hesitant at first but soon joined in when they realized they could change chords and strum.

Sixth-grader Mario Garcia-Perez said his favorite song is the Beatles’ “Paperback Writer.” He said the ukulele is easier and more fun than he imagined.

CANNON BALL, N.D. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said Sunday that it won’t grant an easement for the Dakota Access oil pipeline in southern North Dakota, handing a victory to the Standing Rock Sioux tribe and its supporters, who argued the project would threaten the tribe’s water source and cultural sites.

North Dakota’s leaders criticized the decision, with Gov. Jack Dalrymple calling it a “serious mistake” that “prolongs the dangerous situation” of having several hundred protesters who are camped out on federal land during cold, wintry weather. U.S. Rep. Kevin Cramer said it’s a “very chilling signal” for the future of infrastructure in the United States.

The four-state, $3.8 billion project is largely complete except for the now-blocked segment underneath Lake Oahe, a Missouri River reservoir. Assistant Secretary for Civil Works Jo-Ellen Darcy said in a news release that her decision was based on the need to “explore alternate routes” for the pipeline’s crossing. Her full decision doesn’t rule out that it could cross under the reservoir or north of Bismarck.

“Although we have had continuing discussion and exchanges of new information with the Standing Rock Sioux and Dakota Access, it’s clear that there’s more work to do,” Darcy said.

“The best way to complete that work responsibly and expeditiously is to explore alternate routes for the pipeline crossing.”

las-based Energy Transfer Partners, had said it was unwilling to reroute the project. It had no immediate comment Sunday.

The decision came a day before the government’s deadline for the several hundred people at the Oceti Sakowin, or Seven Council Fires, encampment to leave the federal land. But demonstrators say they’re prepared to stay, and authorities say they won’t forcibly remove them.

As the news spread Sunday, cheers and cheers and chants of “mni wichoni” – “water is life” in Lakota Sioux – broke out among the protesters. Some in the crowd banged drums.

Miles Allard, a member of the Standing Rock Sioux, said he was pleased but remained cautious, saying, “We don’t know what Trump is going to do.”

“The whole world is watching,” Allard added. “I’m telling all our people to stand up and not to leave until this is over.”

Attorney General Loretta Lynch said Sunday that the Department of Justice will “continue to monitor the situation” and stands “ready to provide resources to help all those who can play a constructive role in easing tensions.”

“The safety of everyone in the area – law enforcement officers, residents and protesters alike – continues to be our foremost concern,” she added.

Carla Youngbear of the Meskwaki Potawatomi tribe made her third trip from central Kansas to be at the protest site.

“I have grandchildren, and I’m going to have great-grandchildren,” she said. “They need water. Water is why I’m here.”

Bears’ win over 49ers no reason to sulk BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush

Winning only helps players improve; never mind draft position Bears fans, please allow me to solve a dilemma for you.

It is OK to celebrate the Bears’ 26-6 victory over the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday at Soldier Field. In fact, you should.

For those of you who think losing is ever the answer in the NFL – in this case, to get a higher draft pick – that is not the way the game is played, nor is it the way the game ever should be played.

You are never getting better when you’re losing.

Is it really a big deal whether the Bears pick third, fourth or fifth in the draft?

You can just as easily blow a pick or make a great choice at No. 5 as you can at No. 2. The top two candidates for rookie of the year this season are the Cowboys’ Ezekiel Elliott, who was the fourth overall choice, and Dak Prescott, who famously was a Cowboys fourth-round pick.

And believe it or not, No. 3 might very well prove to be the Bears’ fifthround choice, Jordan Howard.

If this were a draft that offered one or two quarterback prospects worthy of top-five picks, such as 2015 when Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota were at the top of every team’s draft board, it might matter, but even in that case, the Bears would be better served by winning what they can – the only way to develop the players they have – and then trading up a

I love Carson Wentz, for whom the Eagles traded up to draft at No. 2 last season, while Jared Goff most likely was over-drafted at No. 1.

Let’s say the Bears end up drafting fourth – sadly, I don’t see another likely win on the schedule, and 3-13 seems likely.

With Cleveland, San Francisco and Jacksonville picking ahead of

them, there is a real chance Cleveland and the 49ers will take quarterbacks unworthy of their choices, and that would leave legitimate potential franchise-type players such as Jonathan Allen, Myles Garrett and Jabril Peppers there for the taking.

Or, if the Bears see something I don’t in one of the QBs, it won’t be overly expensive or difficult to move up and grab one with Cleveland or the Niners, knowing two of those three

likely would be there for them.

It also is unnecessary to bemoan the quality of the 49ers team the Bears beat Sunday. That’s who was put in front of them, and the Bears’ youngsters aced a lesson in spanking a team they were supposed to.

They may not all be significant pieces of the Bears’ future, but most of them have to be if that future is going to be bright, and developing them is what’s left of this lost mess of a season.

We’ll find out a lot more when they get to Detroit next weekend to take on the first-place Lions, but Barkley made a case Sunday for his potential to be the bridge to the next franchise quarterback and a solid No. 2.

in 10 plays for another touchdown. The two big plays featured Barkley hitting Meredith for 22 yards and Josh Bellamy for 24 yards.

“I think that really spurred both sides of the ball to be motivated to finish the game strong,” Barkley said. “... That’s when we started to really gain momentum. We carried through the second half, especially with the opening drive, which helped the rest of the game.”

Thompson, who had a drop in the end zone on fourth down to end the comeback attempt last week – one of 10 drops in the loss to the Titans – said the receiv-

ers wanted redemption.

“Feed us,” he said was the message he gave Barkley. “We ready. We wanted to redeem ourselves from last week, so feed us. We kept screaming it on the sideline, in the huddle: Feed us, let us do it.”

Bellamy had two more drops but led the team with 93 yards receiving.

“It just goes to show you the confidence our coaches have in us,” Thompson said. “They believe in us. They know what we can do. They see us every day in practice. They believed in us, and they called our number and we answered.”

Bullard sits: The Bears’ third-round pick, Jonathan Bullard, was a healthy scratch, inactive for the first time this season.

“We have Mitch Unrein back, so we played Mitch,” coach John Fox said about Bullard being sidelined. “It was a little bit more advantageous with this kind of game, this kind of offense with [Unrein].”

Quick hits: Guard Josh Sitton was active but only came in when Cody Whitehair was injured. Adrian Amos, who had started all 27 games of his NFL career, was inactive with a foot injury.

Kwiatkoski was putting a hat on people all over the field, and when he sticks you, you stay stuck.

There is no need to search for the negative in the Bears’ win Sunday. It was a good day in a season that has yielded all too few of them.

CHICAGO – Receiver Cameron Meredith didn’t notice that 28:17 into Sunday’s game, the Bears had yet to complete a pass.

In snowy conditions, Matt Barkley was 0 for 3, and the Bears faced a thirdand-5 with 1:43 to go in the half. They had only 34 yards of offense and trailed the 1-10 49ers, 6-0.

“Things were kind of slow. We were running the ball well. When we did get the opportunity, we took advantage of it and drove the ball down the field,” Meredith said.

Barkley completed back-to-back passes to Deonte Thompson, then found Meredith over the middle for 28 yards and again for 17 yards. Jordan Howard’s touchdown plunge punctuated the 81yard drive, giving the Bears a 7-6 lead going into halftime en route to a 26-6 drubbing.

From the time Barkley completed that pass to Thompson, the Bears outscored the 49ers 20-0 and outgained them 292 yards to 38.

For Thompson, the catches to spark the drive had extra significance, as his lost fumble on a kickoff return had kept the Bears without the football for more than seven minutes.

“It was important. We answered,” he said. “We had just given up a field goal from special teams – they turned around and got three points out of that – and we thought it was very important that we got some points going into halftime to get some momentum.”

Berry, Chiefs get improbable win against Falcons THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

ATLANTA – Eric Berry returned an interception for a touchdown, and then brought back another pick for a 2-point conversion that gave the Kansas City Chiefs an improbable, 29-28, victory over the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday.

The Falcons (7-5), rallying from a 2716 deficit, went ahead 28-27 on Matt Ryan’s 5-yard touchdown pass to Aldrick Robinson with 4:32 remaining.

Atlanta decided to go for 2, looking to stretch the margin to a field goal.

But Berry stepped in front of Ryan’s pass and ran 99 yards the other way to give the Chiefs (9-3) their winning margin. It came after Denver won a game in similar fashion last month, returning a blocked PAT for the winning points at New Orleans.

Berry had another huge play with less than a minute to go in the first half, picking off Ryan’s pass over the middle and bringing it back 37 yards for a touchdown. After reaching the end zone, the suburban Atlanta native handed the ball to his mother sitting in the stands at the Georgia Dome.

PACKERS 21, TEXANS 13: At Green Bay, Wisconsin, Aaron Rodgers threw for 209 yards and two touchdowns, and the Packers pulled away with two fourth-quarter touchdowns.

The Packers (6-6) weathered snowy conditions at Lambeau Field, making just enough plays on the cold turf.

Brock Osweiler connected with DeAndre Hopkins for a 44-yard touchdown pass with 1:51 left to get within eight for Houston. Nick Novak missed the extra point, with footing slippery at Lambeau.

The Texans (6-6) had one last shot after the Packers failed to run out the clock. But Osweiler’s last-ditch pass-and-lateral play from Houston’s 12 with 4 seconds left failed, handing Houston its third straight loss and dropping it into a tie with Tennessee atop the AFC South.

Nelson finished with eight catches for 118 yards and a touchdown for Green Bay. LIONS 28, SAINTS 13: At New Orleans, Matthew Stafford passed for 341 yards and two touchdowns.

Golden Tate exploited a coverage breakdown on third-and-long for a 66yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter when Detroit (8-4) was clinging to a six-point lead. The Lions, who’ve won seven of eight, dominated statistically, but four opportunities inside the New Orleans 20 ended with Matt Prater field goals, allowing the Saints (5-7)

to stay close until the fourth quarter.

This time, however, the Lions pulled away for their most comfortable victory of the season after seven previous victory margins of one to seven points.

The Lions also became the first team in 60 Saints home games to stop Drew Brees from completing a touchdown pass, although tight end Coby Fleener had a pass bounce off his hands at the goal line.

RAVENS 38, DOLPHINS 6: At Baltimore, Joe Flacco threw for 381 yards and four touchdowns, and the Ravens overwhelmed the Dolphins in the first half to end Miami’s six-game winning streak.

Baltimore (7-5) led 24-0 at halftime behind Flacco and a dominant performance from the league’s second-ranked defense. Flacco went 27 for 34 for 258 yards and three scores over the first 30 minutes, and the Ravens yielded only 115 yards and intercepted a Ryan Tannehill pass.

That was enough to provide the Ravens with their fourth win in five games. Miami also is 7-5.

Flacco finished with a franchise-record 36 completions in 47 attempts, by far his most impressive outing in an uneven season. He entered with 11 TD passes and 10 interceptions.

PATRIOTS 26, RAMS 10: At Foxborough, Massachusetts, Tom Brady became the NFL’s career leader in victories by a quarterback, earning his 201st by throwing for 269 yards and a touchdown. Brady, who was 33 of 46, had tied Peyton Manning last week in a win over the New York Jets.

His lone touchdown came on a 14yard pass to Chris Hogan in the first quarter. LeGarrette Blount scored the game’s first touchdown , rumbling for a 43-yard, ankle-breaking score in the first quarter while spinning around safety Maurice Alexander in the process. He finished with 88 yards on 18 carries.

The Patriots (10-2) have won seven of their past eight.

On the same day that Los Angeles coach Jeff Fisher and general manager Les Snead were given contract extensions, the recently relocated Rams (48) proved they still have a long way to go after losing for the seventh time in eight outings.

BRONCOS 20, JAGUARS 10: At Jacksonville, Florida, Bradley Roby returned an interception 51 yards for a touchdown, helping the Broncos gain ground in the AFC playoff picture.

bler across the middle in the third quarter and went untouched the other way. Star linebacker Von Miller hit Bortles as he released the ball.

The latest interception resulted in a seventh consecutive loss for Jacksonville (2-10) and secured another miserable milestone for the small-market franchise. The Jaguars became the fifth team in NFL history to post double-digit losses in six consecutive seasons, joining Tampa Bay (1983-94), Detroit (2001-06), Oakland (2003-09) and Cleveland (2008-13).

The Broncos (8-4) rebounded from an overtime loss against Kansas City, and with Miami’s loss at Baltimore, moved into position to get one of the conference’s wild-card spots.

BENGALS 32, EAGLES 14: At Cincinnati, Andy Dalton threw a pair of touchdown passes and Cincinnati finally got its depleted offense moving without receiver A.J. Green.

The Bengals (4-7-1) got their first win since Oct. 23, beating a team that’s in a swoon of its own. The Eagles (5-7) opened the season with three straight wins, but have dropped seven of nine.

Dalton had completions of 50, 44, 29, 23 and 21 yards. The Bengals scored on each of their first six possessions for a 29-0 lead, reinventing themselves with Green and running back Giovani Bernard sidelined by injuries. The previous time they scored on their first six possessions was 2009 against the Bears.

The only bad moment: Mike Nugent missed another PAT kick wide to the right, his fourth miss in a span of five tries. Nugent made field goals from 32, 33, 26 and 38 yards, the last one deflecting off the left upright.

CARDINALS 31, REDSKINS 23: At Glendale, Arizona, Carson Palmer threw for 300 yards and three touchdowns and David Johnson scored twice.

The loss by the Redskins (6-5-1) clinched a playoff spot for the 11-1 Dallas Cowboys.

Palmer’s 25-yard touchdown pass to Johnson with 11:09 to play put Arizona ahead 24-20, the fourth lead change of the second half.

After a Washington field goal, Palmer’s 42-yard pass to J.J. Nelson with 1:56 padded gave the Cardinals (5-6-1) a 31-23 lead.

Washington drove to the Arizona 28-yard line before Patrick Peterson’s interception of Kirk Cousins’ pass with 41 seconds left sealed the victory.

Johnson, who also scored on a 1-yard run, became the second player in NFL history to top 100 yards from scrimmage in the first 12 games of a

season. Edgerrin James was the other.

RAIDERS 38, BILLS 24: At Oakland, California, Derek Carr threw for 260 yards and two touchdowns to rally the Raiders to their biggest comeback in 16 years.

After falling behind 24-9 following touchdowns on the first two drives of the second half for Buffalo (6-6), the Raiders (10-2) took the game over with 29 straight points. They won their sixth straight to remain one game ahead of Kansas City in the tough AFC West.

Oakland scored touchdowns on three straight drives, including scoring strikes from Carr to Michael Crabtree and Amari Cooper for his sixth fourth-quarter comeback of the season.

This was the biggest comeback for the Raiders since overcoming a 21-point deficit to Indianapolis to win, 38-31, on Sept. 10, 2000.

The defense also tightened by forcing three straight three-and-outs and then getting a turnover when Khalil Mack deflected Tyrod Taylor’s pass that Nate Allen intercepted .

STEELERS 24, GIANTS 14: At Pittsburgh, Ben Roethlisberger passed for 289 yards and two touchdowns, Le’Veon Bell rolled up 182 yards of total offense, and Pittsburgh’s resurgent defense harassed Eli Manning into a flurry of mistakes.

Antonio Brown edged good buddy Odell Beckham Jr. in their personal showdown, catching six passes for 54 yards and an acrobatic scoring grab at the back of the end zone. Tight end Ladarius Green added six receptions for 110 yards, both career highs, and a touchdown as the Steelers (7-5) won their third straight to keep pace with Baltimore atop the AFC North.

Manning completed just 24 of 39 passes for 195 yards with two touchdowns and two picks in the red zone for the Giants (8-4), whose six-game run ended with a thud. Beckham was largely a nonfactor despite a game-high 10 receptions for 100 yards.

BUCCANEERS 28, CHARGERS 21: At San Diego, Jameis Winston threw a goahead, 12-yard touchdown pass to Cameron Brate midway through the fourth quarter and Keith Tandy intercepted Philip Rivers in the end zone with 2:56 left to give the Buccaneers their fourth straight victory.

The Bucs (7-5) pulled into a tie with Atlanta atop the NFC South.

Rivers threw two second-half interceptions, including Lavonte David’s pick-6.

The Chargers (5-7) were trying to get back to .500 for the first time since Week 2.

ARNOLD, Mo. – After falling just shy of winning Ron Sauer duals titles the past two years, Lockport’s wrestling team experienced little drama as it rolled to seven straight victories to claim top honors in the competition.

Coach Josh Oster’s squad went 8315 during the two-day event and the closest dual meet of the tournament for the Porters was a 51-15 victory in the title meet over Whitfield, Missouri.

In pool play, Lockport beat Collinsville, 63-9, host Fox, Missouri 60-9, and Holt, Mo.60-12. Then in the championship bracket, it won 71-6 over Helias, Missouri, 55-16, over Francis Howell Central, Missouri and, 62-3, over Edwardsville before capturing the title.

As a result of their 7-0 showing in the competition, the Porters improved to 13-0 on the season. They are ranked 20th in the nation by InterMat. Some of the Porters who had multiple wins without suffering a loss included Matt Ramos (106 pounds), Anthony Molton (113), Brandon Ramos (138), Trevell Timmons (160), Payton Fernandes (182), Yousif Salah (195) and Ronald Tucker, Jr. (285).

Among those who had multiple wins and just one loss in the competition were James Pierandozzi (120), Baylor Fernandes (145), Zach Reese (152) and Nicholas Dado (182).

Copp scores winner with 4:45 left; Jets top Hawks

CHICAGO – Andrew Copp scored the tiebreaking goal with 4:45 left, Bryan Little got his third goal in three games and the Winnipeg Jets edged the Blackhawks, 2-1, on Sunday night.

Copp beat Scott Darling on the stick side with a shot from the right circle that slipped just inside the left post.

The Hawks’ Artemi Panarin scored with 6:54 remaining to tie it at 1, moments after Copp hit the post, to spoil Connor Hellebuyck’s bid for a second shutout against the Hawks in less than a month. Panarin completed a give-andgo with Patrick Kane, beating Hellebuyck to the glove side.

Hellebuyck finished with 25 saves and outdueled Darling, who started his second straight game for the Hawks in place of No. 1 goalie Corey Crawford.

Darling made 30 saves, including three on breakaways.

Little’s power-play goal with 43.4 seconds left in the second period was his fourth point in four games since missing 23 with a lower-body injury.

Scheifele has 13 goals and 13 assists in 26 games.

Neither team had a prime scoring chance in a tentative first period, but the game opened up in the second. Darling stopped Nikolaj Ehlers on a breakaway with a glove save at 8:32, then made a pad stop on Adam Lowry when he skated in alone with 4:20 left in the period.

The Hawks’ Artem Anisimov missed on a rebound attempt of Marian Hossa’s drive 3:40 into the second. Just under 4 minutes later, Dennis Rasmussen sent the puck through the crease behind Hellebuyck and in front of an open net.

Little finally connected for his power-play goal on a sweet backhand tip to put the Jets ahead 1-0.

After Kane was sent off for hooking former Hawk Dustin Byfuglien, Little got open just to the left of the crease. He tapped Byfuglien’s pinpoint feed from the top of the right circle under Darling’s right pad.

After serving an interference penalty, Byfuglien took a pass from Blake Wheeler and broke in alone, but Darling stopped him at 7:25 and Wheeler fired the rebound over the net.

Playoff Pairs: Alabama-Washington and Ohio State-Clemson

In the end, true chaos never came to college football this season. Four teams that started near the top of the College Football Playoff rankings will play for the national championship.

Alabama will face Washington in one semifinal, and Clemson meets Ohio State in the other. None of them was ranked any lower than sixth since the selection committee started ranking teams in early November.

Even after a wild finish to championship Saturday, selection Sunday went pretty much as expected.

The committee stayed with the same top four it picked going into championship weekend, leaving out No. 5 Penn State even though the Nittany Lions won the Big Ten title game and beat Ohio State earlier in the season.

The Buckeyes (11-1) are the first team to reach the playoff in its threeyear history without winning their conference.

The unbeaten Crimson Tide (13-0) are in the playoff for the third straight season and is the top seed for the sec-

ond time. They will play the fourthranked Huskies (12-1) in the Peach Bowl in Atlanta on Dec. 31. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.

Alabama has played Washington four times previously, twice in bowls and not since 1986. Huskies fans were holding up signs at games late in the season, proclaiming “We want Bama.”

“Sometimes you got to be careful what you wish for,” Washington coach Chris Petersen said on ESPN. “I didn’t hold up that sign.”

Saban and Alabama will be trying to win their fifth national championship in eight seasons, and second straight.

Washington’s last national title came in 1991, when the Huskies were No. 1 in the final coaches’ poll.

Petersen, the former Boise State coach in his third season with Washington, never has faced Saban and said he does not know him well.

“I feel like I know him, I see him on TV so much,” Petersen said.

No. 3 Ohio State is making its second playoff appearance, and No. 2 Clemson (12-1) is in for the second consecutive season. The Buckeyes and

Tigers will meet Dec. 3 at the Fiesta Bowl in Glendale, Arizona. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.

Ohio State won the first College Football Playoff after the 2014 season, and Clemson lost to Alabama in last season’s championship game.

Ohio State and Clemson have played twice before, both in bowl games. The last time was after the 2013 season.

The one difference from last week’s top four and the final one was Clemson and Ohio State switched spots. So the Tigers will wear the home jerseys in University of Phoenix stadium instead of the Buckeyes.

Selection committee chairman Kirby Hocutt said the decision came down not to Penn State and Ohio State, but the Nittany Lions (11-2) and Pac-12 champion Washington.

The Huskies’ only loss was to Southern California, and its nonconference schedule featured FCS Portland State, Rutgers and Idaho. Penn State played Pitt, Temple and Kent State outside the conference and lost to the Panthers. The Nittany Lions also were beaten by 39 at Michigan in

their last loss.

Penn State finished the season on a nine-game winning streak to make a strong closing statement.

“Had Washington had a stronger strength of schedule I do not think that conversation would have been as difficult,” said Hocutt, who is also the Texas tech athletic director.

The selection protocol does not require the committee to pick conference champions or the winner of headto-head matchups.

“You can make arguments for and against so many teams,” Penn State coach James Franklin said on ESPN, adding his team was appreciative of the Rose Bowl bid it will receive.

The rest of the New Year’s Six bowls were also announced: – Florida State (9-3) will play Michigan (10-2) in the Orange Bowl on Dec. 30.

– Southern California (9-3) will play Penn State (11-2) in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 2.

– Auburn (8-4) will play Oklahoma (10-2) in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 2.

NASSAU, Bahamas – Hideki Matsuyama was only 5 when he first saw Tiger Woods on videotape win the 1997 Masters victory. Even sweeter was standing next to Woods in his Sunday red shirt to receive yet another trophy.

Right now, the Japanese star can’t seem to lose.

The return of Tiger Woods ended with Matsuyama winning his third straight tournament, and fourth out of his last five, in the Hero World Challenge.

“I can’t say that I played well today, but I did win Tiger’s tournament,” Matsuyama said. “And what a great honor that is.”

Matsuyama had a few nervous moments on the back nine at Albany when his seven-shot lead at the start of the final round was reduced to two shots over British Open champion Henrik Stenson with two to play.

Matsuyama closed with two pars for a 1-over 73 and a two-shot victory.

Woods found plenty of positives from his first tournament in more than 15 months, although the final round featured three double bogeys and a 76 – the highest score of the tournament – that dropped him to 15th place out of 17 players.

“It feels good to be back out here playing again, competing and trying to beat the best players in the world,” Woods said. “I missed it. I love it.”

Matsuyama is moving up in class quickly.

His big run started with a threeshot victory in the Japan Open. He was runner-up in Malaysia, then became the first Asian to win a World Golf Championships title with a seven-shot victory over Stenson and Daniel Berger in the HSBC Champions.

Two weeks later, he won the Taiheiyo Masters on the Japan Golf Tour by seven. And except for a few mistakes on the back nine at Albany, this was another runaway.

“It’s going to give him a boat load of confidence going into next year, and he’s going to be one of the top guys to beat for a very long time,” Woods said.

Matsuyama, who finished at 18-under 270, won $1 million and remained at No. 6 in the world. He ended his streak of 17 consecutive founds in the 60s, although all that mattered was the trophy presentation with Woods.

“It’s tough with a seven-stroke lead,” he said. “But somehow I was able to pull it off. Hopefully, this experience will help me in the future.”

Stenson, playing with him in the final group, closed with a 68 and made Matsuyama work hard for this title.

In this study, 37 percent of the mothers who used acetaminophen had fever; only 23 percent of those who didn’t use acetaminophen had fever. And again, those who used acetaminophen were more likely to be smokers.

So one has to ask: Why does someone take acetaminophen during pregnancy?

The answer: To reduce a fever. So fever may be the problem, not the acetaminophen. Further, women who smoke and are obese are more likely to be unhealthy during pregnancy, more likely to take acetaminophen for physical problems and more likely to have children who may also be less healthy.

Would I recommend acetaminophen regularly in pregnancy for joint pain and muscle aches? Probably not, although I would take it for a fever and for moderate pain. Otherwise, it’s better to do prenatal yoga, gentle stretching and maintain a good diet.

Dear Doctor: Will taking acetaminophen (Tylenol) during pregnancy increase the chances that the child will have ADHD or autism?

Dear Reader: Such concern is understandable. Parents and parents-to-be have been alarmed over the past few years by two Danish studies that raise the specter of greater ADHD and autism risks among children whose mothers took the overthe-counter pain killer acetaminophen during pregnancy. But let’s look at these studies a little more closely.

The largest of these studies showed that, among children whose mothers ever used acetaminophen during pregnancy, 5.7 percent showed symptoms of hyperactivity by age 7. Among children whose mothers never took acetaminophen, 4.3 percent showed symptoms of hyperactivity. Similar mild differences also were noted for emotional problems and overall conduct.

Here’s the important caveat: The two groups of women were very different.

Participants who used acetaminophen were more likely to be smokers, more likely to be obese (BMI greater than 30) and more likely to have had a fever. Just having a fever during pregnancy has been associated with autism, behavioral abnormalities and problems with attention.

As for the autism study, it linked acetaminophen use during pregnancy to an IQ drop of 2 points in 5-year-olds.

In “The Abbot, the Parrot and the Bermuda Bowl” (Master Point Press), the Bozwambi tribe from the Upper Bhumpopo has qualified for the 2015 Bermuda Bowl in India. The players had learned bridge from missionaries sent there by the Abbot many years ago. When the Abbot visits the tribe and learns of their success, he insists on being added to the team. His teammates are Miss Nabooba, Mrs. Okoku, Mbozi and the Witchdoctor; his partner is the Parrot, the tribe’s best player.

The Parrot made this four-spade contract look easy. What did he do after West led the heart queen?

Declarer needed to find trumps splitting 2-1, but he still might have lost one spade and three diamonds if East got on lead and shifted to a high diamond, West having the ace hovering over South’s king.

To maximize his chances, the Parrot won the first trick, ruffed his remaining heart on the board and led a trump. When East played the 10, the Parrot flicked a low spade onto the table. West won with his queen, but had no winning defense. If he had played a club, declarer would have drawn the missing trump and claimed 10 tricks: four spades, one heart, four clubs and the heart ruff. When West, in desperation, shifted to a diamond, hoping South had only queen-third, the contract made with an overtrick.

The deals are instructive and the prose entertaining -- as usual from this author.
