Heritage Corridor announces Joliet Area Restaurant Week

mmallory@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The first Joliet Area Restaurant Week is scheduled for February.

The Heritage Corridor Convention and Visitors Bureau announced that the new collaborative effort is scheduled for Feb. 17 to Feb. 26. Restaurants from Morris to Lockport will be featuring special deals aimed at bringing in visitors from all over the Chicago area to experience the flavors of Will and Grundy counties.

“It’s our first attempt at a restaurant week,” Heritage Corridor CVB President and CEO Robert Navarro said. “There seemed to be a lot of interest from our restaurant partners.”

For now, there are a dozen restaurants participating, but there’s still time to join.

In Joliet, participating restaurants include Al’s Steakhouse, Chicago St. Pub, Cross Street Grill, Flavors: The Buffet, Juliet’s, The Reserve and Tin Roof. In Lockport, Embers Tap House and Public Landing Restaurant are on board. Wilmington’s Big Fish Bar & Grille, Shorewood’s Little Saigon and Morris’ Morris Chop Shop also will participate.

Each restaurant agreed to offer specials to customers during the restaurant week. Deals include a buy one, get one free entree, a certain percentage off guest checks, a free dessert or appetizer with the purchase of an entree, and fixed price meals with an appetizer, entree and dessert.

Joliet D-86 board approves bid for KEEP Center roofing project

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Joliet Public Schools District 86 Board approved a bid last week for much-needed roofing work at its KEEP Center.

The Board of School Inspectors approved the roofing work in a 6-0 vote Nov. 21, awarding a bid of $141,000 to Romeoville-based Crowther Roofing & Sheet Metal.

Board Inspector Gwendolyn Ulmer was absent for the vote, according to the district website.

The bid approval follows an emergency resolution that was adopted at an Oct. 12 meeting to waive bidding requirements in order to replace failing heating, ventilation and air-conditioning equipment at the KEEP Center, located at the district’s J.F. Kennedy Administrative Center.

Crowther Roofing & Sheet Metal was the lowest bidder among seven contractors that submitted bids.

The public bid opening for the roof work project was held Nov. 15 at the district’s administrative center.

Architect firm Healy, Bender & Associates is working with the district on the KEEP Center roof project.

For the work, Crowther Roofing & Sheet Metal will install and weatherproof a new rooftop mechanical equipment curb for the variable air volume system.

In a letter to the district, David Patton of Healy, Bender & Associates stated the contractor has completed several public school roofing projects that cost more than $1 million.

“Crowther has successfully completed several roofing projects with [Healy, Bender & Associates], including several roof replacement projects of a similar scope,” Patton said.

At the Oct. 12 meeting, Tamara Mitchell, assistant superintendent for business and financial services, said cracks have turned into holes in the heat exchanger of the HVAC system for the KEEP Center.

Superintendent Theresa Rouse has said district officials were under a time crunch to fix the system because they were on the “edge of extremely cold weather,” and the KEEP Center has no climate control.

Joliet Area Restaurant Week will follow Chicago Restaurant Week, which is scheduled for Jan. 27 to Feb. 9. Navarro said depending on the inaugural week’s success, the Heritage Corridor CVB might expand its restaurant week into the Starved Rock area in future years.

Navarro said restaurants still can join the restaurant week promotion but should do so soon to take advantage of maximum exposure.

“We’re doing a lot of print and digital advertising for this,” Navarro said.

LOCAL BRIEF Police: Shots fired after dispute in Shorewood

SHOREWOOD – Shorewood police are investigating after shots were fired Monday evening.

The shooting occurred about 5:45 p.m. in a garage in the 100 block of Channahon Street. Shorewood Police Department Deputy Chief Jason Barten said the detached garage belongs to an address in the 100 block of Channahon Street but actually faces Helene Street.

“There was a gathering in the garage and then a dispute between some of the people there that led to the shooting,” Barten said.

Barten said evidence police recovered from the scene shows shots were fired, but there were no reported injuries. One bullet also went into a nearby house, police said.

No arrests had been made as of 9 p.m., but police were conducting interviews with several people at the station and had identified other “persons of interest,” Barten said.

As part of Giving Tuesday, the Greater Joliet Area YMCA and other local organizations in Will County involved in charity or social services will seek donations and support.

Giving Tuesday, which began in 2012, is a national movement after Black Friday and Cyber Monday that advocates for giving and philanthropy, according to its website.

Joliet committee OKs pet pig amendments Resident waits for full City Council approval

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Tasha the potbellied pig may be staying at the Flannery household in Joliet if proposed changes in the city’s animal ordinance hold up.

The City Council Land Use and Legislative Committee sent new rules allowing potbellied pigs as pets to the full council for approval Monday.

Tasha’s owner, Joann Flannery, said she was “ecstatic” about the council’s vote and had worried beforehand that she could lose Tasha.

“It would be like someone coming in and taking your dog and saying, ‘No, the ordinance says you can’t have it anymore,’ ” Flannery said. “You’d be devastated because you get attached to that animal.”

No one ever took Tasha. But the city did send Flannery a notice that the pig’s presence in a residential neighborhood violated Joliet’s animal ordinance. She had faced the possible loss of the pig pending the outcome of a hearing that was never held.

The ordinance changes would settle the matter if the full council approves.

Flannery was at the committee meeting and told council members that potbellied pigs are “as easy to train as any animal.”

imously voted to recommend the ordinance changes to the council, which likely will vote Dec. 6. The committee even suggested loosening some of the limits placed on pet pigs in the proposal.

“If we’re acknowledging that this is a pet, then we don’t get to restrict its size,” council member Brooke Hernandez Brewer said regarding a pro-

posal to limit pet pigs to 125 pounds in weight. “What we don’t do with dogs, we shouldn’t do with potbellied pigs.”

Tasha weighs 200 pounds, Flannery said.

City Attorney Marty Shanahan said the weight limit was an option that he will not include in the final version.

The final version of the ordinance also may remove a fence requirement, although council member Jan Quillman said she was in favor of fences for potbellied pigs even though they are not required for dogs.

“However, I think for protection of the pig there should be a fenced-in yard,” Quillman said, noting the animal is likely to attract curious residents.

Shanahan said the final ordinance will require that pigs be kept in fencedin yards. The ordinance will allow one pig per household.

People have been curious about her pig, Flannery said, making it difficult to take Tasha for walks without being stopped.

The city sent a notice to the Flannerys after getting an anonymous complaint, but Flannery said the neighborhood has been very welcoming, and residents even come to the house to see Tasha.

“The neighbors are bringing their children because Tasha loves kids,” she said.

Council members OK more power for inspector general

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A City Council committee gave a green light on Monday to expanding the inspector general of Joliet’s authority so he can investigate nonprofits and local governments that receive money from the city.

The proposal was shelved in April at a time when the city considered making inspector general oversight a condition of sending money to the Rialto Square Theatre. It is coming up again as the Rialto seeks $500,000 in a city budget to be approved in December.

The Rialto, however, was not mentioned Monday.

Inspector General Chris Regis said he is recommending the additional authority and two other changes to “close up an existing loophole” and update the inspector general ordinance.

“It puts our inspector general ordinance in line with those nationwide.”

The proposed changes also would give Regis the authority to investigate companies that apply to be pre-certified as qualified bidders on city contracts.

The inspector general already has the authority to investigate companies doing business with the city.

Shorewood’s Festival of Trees on display Can be seen through Dec. 31

mmallory@shawmedia.com SHOREWOOD – The village of Shorewood is offering several events to help its residents get into the Christmas and holiday spirit.

The village held its Christmas tree-lighting ceremony Nov. 22, which signified the start of its Festival of Trees.

All Christmas trees are located on the first and second floors inside Shorewood Village Hall, 1 Towne Center Blvd., and will be on display through Dec. 31.

“The Festival of Trees is essentially [to create a] festive atmosphere for our village, and an opportunity for local businesses and organizations to decorate a tree,” Shorewood recreation and event coordinator Luke Gundersen said, adding that the decorators placed fliers and other promotional items underneath or near the trees.

From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, the village will host its annual “Sunday with Santa” at village hall. Families can take pictures with Santa.

The village also collaborated with So Much Fun Paint and Sip to promote a Christmas painting night out from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the business, 16108 S. Route 59 in Shorewood.

Through Dec. 9, unwrapped toys taken to one of the four stations will be donated to the Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program.

Toys collected after Dec. 9 will be donated to programs in New Lenox Township and at Silver Cross Hospital.

“Last year, we were able to collect several hundred toys for less fortunate children in our area with the help of our district’s residents,” district Deputy Fire Chief Adam Riegel said.

The fire district has participated in the toy drive since 2011.

“We want to make sure the word gets out. We’ve got messages on the signs at all the stations,” district fire

The toys “deliver ... a message of hope to less fortunate youngsters that will assist them in becoming responsible, productive and patriotic citizens,” according to the campaign’s website.

JOLIET – Two men were arrested Saturday after shots were fired during an argument in a Housing Authority of Joliet building.

The confrontation occurred at 8:36 p.m. at 311 N. Ottawa St., Deputy Police Chief Ed Gregory said.

“Officers were called about a disturbance between two men inside the building, and while they were en route, there was a report of shots fired,” Gregory said.

Police reportedly arrived to see Vincent S. Augusta, 27, run out of the building and head toward Joliet Street.

As Augusta was being pursued, police “saw him throw a handgun into the grass,” Gregory said.

Augusta was caught on Webster Street near the AT&T building but tried to pull away and kick at officers as he was taken into custody, Gregory said.

Meanwhile, William Reid, 24, had been detained back at the Housing Authority complex. Witnesses identified Augusta and Reid as the two men in-

volved in the fight, police said.

“No one saw a gun being fired [at Reid], but a bullet hole was found in the elevator, and a bullet fragment was located in the hallway,” Gregory said.

Reid was not injured in the incident.

Augusta, of the 5700 block of South Michigan Avenue in Chicago, was arrested on charges of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, unauthorized possession of a firearm, reckless discharge of a firearm, unauthorized possession of ammunition, possession of a firearm by a street gang member, criminal Vincent S. trespassing, obstructing Augusta justice and resisting a police officer. He was booked into the Will County Jail.

According to jail records, Augusta was arrested by Joliet police earlier this year on battery and criminal trespassing charges.

Reid, of the 8800 block of West 83rd Place in Justice, did not have a pass to be on the property, Gregory said. He was arrested on a charge of criminal trespassing and released on bond.

Morris man charged in connection with brother’s shooting

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Morris police on Monday arrested Patrick Lyons in connection with involuntary manslaughter in the Jan. 8 shooting of his brother, Matt Lyons, 24, of Morris, at a residence in Morris.

Patrick Lyons, 28, also of Morris, was processed at the Morris Police Department and later taken to the Grundy County Jail in lieu of bond, Morris Police Chief John Severson said.

Severson said that after a lengthy investigation with an Illinois State Police crime scene investigator, Morris police detectives sought and were granted an arrest warrant in Grundy County Circuit Court for Patrick Ly-

ons. Bail was set at $100,000.

At about 8:47 p.m. Jan. 8 Morris police responded to the 2400 block of Oakland Circle for a report of a gunshot victim, according to a police department news release.

Upon arrival, officers found Matt Lyons unconscious and bleeding with a gunshot wound to the face. Detectives and the Patrick state police investigator Lyons were called to the scene.

Matt Lyons was taken to Morris Hospital by Morris Fire Protection & Ambulance District personnel, and later was taken by ambulance to Loyola Medical Center in Maywood, where he was pronounced dead two days later.

JOLIET – Police said a convicted burglar who was released on parole last month tried to force his way inside a Joliet home earlier this month.

Deandre C. Bolden, 23, of the 1400 block of Fairmont Avenue in Joliet, was taken into custody early Saturday at a residence in the 3600 block of Forest View Drive in Joliet. Bolden had been sought for arrest on a charge of residential burglary for a Nov. 11 incident in the 1500 block of Edgerton Drive.

Deputy Police Chief Al Roechner said that at 9:35 a.m. the day of the incident, witnesses saw Bolden ring the front doorbell of a house several times before riding his bicycle around to the rear of the residence.

“He tried to force his way inside and damaged the storm door,” Roechner

said. “A witness called police, and Bolden left on his bicycle before he could get inside. The witness identified Bolden from a photo lineup, and we obtained a warrant for his arrest.”

According to the Illinois Department of Corrections, Bolden was released Oct. 4 from Menard Correctional Center, where he was serving a 12-year sentence for residential burglary.

Deandre C. On June 30, 2010, a Bolden Rockdale woman left for work in the morning and returned home to find someone had broken into her residence.

“She had a play-at-home slot machine in the basement, and when that was dusted for prints, they came back to Mr. Bolden,” Rockdale Police Chief Robert Dykstra said.

According to Will County Court records, Bolden pleaded guilty to residential burglary in exchange for having an unrelated aggravated battery with a firearm charge dismissed.

ST. CHARLES – Four Illinois Youth Center – St. Charles guards, including one Channahon man, have been indicted for encouraging juvenile detainees to attack other detainees as a form of discipline, according to a news release from the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Johan O. Asiata of Channahon was indicted on multiple counts Nov. 22 by a Kane County grand jury, as were Michael M. Klimek of Yorkville, Andre L. McFarland of Rockford and Elliott J. Short of St. Charles. An arrest warrant for each was issued immediately.

Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon alleged that the guards, led

by Klimek, encouraged certain juvenile residents to physically attack other residents, facilitated the attacks and stood by during the attacks.

The offenses took place in January, and the indictments stated that each of the defendants was acting in his official capacity when he engaged in the alleged acts at the facility, the news release stated.

All were employed as juvenile justice specialists at the time of the alleged of-

fenses, according to the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Asiata, 30, of the 26200 block of South Rachel Drive, was charged with five counts of official misconduct, two counts of aggravated battery and one count of unlawful restraint. He was taken into custody Nov. 23 by Illinois State Police and was released from Kane County Jail on Nov. 24 after posting $5,000 bond, Johan O. the news release stated.

Asiata The charges alleged that 10 victims were involved in incidents that took place Jan. 9 to Jan. 13 and Jan. 28, the news release stated, noting that the allegations were reported to the Illinois Department of Corrections in late January. The Illinois State Police handled the investigation, and the defendants were placed on administrative leave.

If convicted of the most serious offense, each of the defendants faces a sentence of probation or two to five years in prison. Asiata is set to appear at 9 a.m.

United Way of Will County, which partners with 46 local agencies, plans to take a slightly different approach to the movement, Development Director Sarah Oprzedek said. She stated in an email that the vast majority of United Way’s donors give throughout the year.

Rather than seek donations, Oprzedek stated United Way will seek those willing to give time and talent using its online volunteer website, uwwill. galaxydigital.com. She said volunteers can engage in the community through the website.

“It’s our own approach to [Giving Tuesday]. Let’s promote volunteerism – giving time, giving your talent,” Oprzedek said.

Wilkinson said the Greater Joliet Area YMCA will have a social media and email campaign for Giving Tuesday. She said it’s not the first year the nonprofit has participated in the national event, and she is looking forward to the opportunity to tie Giving Tuesday to the mission of the YMCA through stories.

WANDA MILDRED MABE Wanda Mildred (Lowe) Mabe, 81, transitioned from earth to her new home in Heaven on November 24, 2016, after a family and friend filled Thanksgiving Day. She is the wife of Edward T. Mabe. They were married sixty-six years and have had a wonderful life filled with children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She retired from Saint Joseph Hospital after fifteen years of service. After retiring she and Ed became foster parents sharing their home with seventy-eight children over the years.

Five of those children became permanent members of their family. She enjoyed her role as a foster parent helping to shape the lives

DENICE RAE MILIOTTI Denice Rae Miliotti, age 64, passed away peacefully Saturday, November 26, 2016, at the Joliet Area Community Hospice Home with her family by her side.

She was born in 1952 in Prairie Grove, Arkansas. She received an

In 1959, L.D. and Shirley bought property and settled in Plainfield, IL and their family grew to include another son, Ron and a daughter, Kelley.

Their family and friends share many happy memories of swimming, fishing, horseback riding and family gatherings at their Plainfield home, especially as L.D. had a gift for making everyone feel welcome and was always willing to share his blessings with others.

After retirement from pipeline construction, L.D. and his good friend, Terry Morphew, formed Smith & Morphew, a used construction equipment rental and sales company.

After a second retirement L.D. and Shirley were blessed to be able to travel to all 50 states, making wonderful memories with family members and dear and new friends and camping in many beautiful locations.

L.D. was a person who loved people and his family teased him that he “never met a stranger.”

Donald A. Tolen, was born in Kansas, Illinois to Grace and Raymond Tolen on July 11, 1943, and passed away on Wednesday, November 23, 2016.

He was the first son of 9 children. He had 7 older sisters, Kathleen “Toots” Rae (Nolan), Betty Boyer (Charles), Mary Roach (Robert), Marjorie “Monkey” Hammond (Shorty), Norma Roach (Don), Helen Addis (Gale), Wanda Kerans (Bob); and one younger brother, John Tolen.

He graduated from Kansas High School in 1960 and Eastern Illinois University with a bachelor’s in geography in 1965. He completed his master’s thesis in geography in 1966. As a break from school he enjoyed a year and a half in the Alaska bush working for the Federal Aviation Agency in 1962-63. He then married his college girlfriend and best friend, Phyllis McConchie on May 31, 1964. He treasured his best friend Charles Hand who was his best man.

They decided to enroll in the Peace Corps in the fall of 1966 and served in Tacloban, Philippines teaching science and English at the Leyte Normal School until 1968. With an open travel ticket they explored southeast Asia and Japan before returning home in the fall of 1968.

Their daughter, Dianna was born in 1970 and they built their first house in New Lenox where they have lived as a pillar of the evolving neighborhood for 45 years. From 1968-1983 he taught earth science and geography at Joliet West, then at Joliet Central from 1983 until 1994. In the fall of 1982 he also obtained his private pilot’s license. As a family they participated in the American Host program each summer where teachers came from Europe to stay for 2-4 weeks from 1974 -1984. Once their daughter was older, they also participated in the Japanese Lobo 4-H program, hosting students for a month each summer and hosting a wonderful “German daughter,” Kerstin Hueper, who lived with them from 1983-84.

Both he and Phyllis took an early retirement opportunity in 1994 and enjoyed 22 years of “living” with travels including Irish cruises, wintering in Florida, and visiting old friends in Europe. Over the years he faithfully attended the annual conference of the Illinois Geographical Society, only missing the last year in 29 years.

He shared his love of clock making with his grandson, Zack, and recently began teaching his art of woodworking to his grandson, Zane. He also enjoyed being very involved in their adoptive family, the Pawlicas and their 10 children and one grandchild.

Don was diagnosed with stomach cancer in April 2013, and tolerated chemotherapy and multiple surgeries over the next few years.

BISMARCK, N.D. – Authorities said no action will be taken to enforce North Dakota Gov. Jack Dalrymple’s emergency evacuation order for protesters of the Dakota Access oil pipeline.

Dalrymple signed the order Monday for protesters who are camping on U.S. Army Corps of Engineers land. Dalrymple cited “harsh winter conditions,” and his order said the unpermitted camp sites are not zoned for suitable housing.

Emergency Services spokeswoman Cecily Fong told The Associated Press that authorities will not be using law enforcement or the National Guard to enforce the governor’s order.

Earlier, the corps ordered the protesters to leave federal law but said it has no plans to forcibly remove anyone.

Terrorism is suspected in attack at Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio – A Somali-born Ohio State University student plowed his car into a group of pedestrians on campus and then got out and began stabbing people with a butcher knife Monday before he was shot to death by a police officer. Police said they were investigating whether it was a terrorist attack.

Eleven people were hurt, one critically.

The attacker was identified as Abdul Razak Ali Artan. He was born in Somalia and was a legal permanent U.S. resident, according to a U.S. official who wasn’t authorized to discuss the case and spoke on the condition of anonymity. The FBI joined the investigation.

The details emerged after a morning of conflicting reports and confusion, created in part by a series of tweets from the university warning there was an “active shooter” on campus and students should “Run Hide Fight.” The warning was prompted by what turned out to be police gunfire.

Police vehicles and ambulances converged on the 60,000-student campus, and authorities blocked off roads. Students barricaded themselves inside offices and classrooms, piling chairs and desks in front of doors, before getting the all-clear an hour and a half later.

Ohio State University police Chief Craig Stone said the assailant deliberately drove his small Honda over a curb outside an engineering classroom building and then began knifing people.

A campus officer nearby because of a gas leak arrived on the scene and shot the driver in less than a minute, Stone said.

Angshuman Kapil, a graduate student, was outside Watts Hall when the car barreled onto the sidewalk.

“It just hit everybody who was in front,” he said. “After that everybody was shouting, ‘Run! Run! Run!’ ” Student Martin Schneider said he heard the car’s engine revving.

“I thought it was an accident initially until I saw the guy come out with a knife,” Schneider said, adding that the man didn’t say anything when he got out.

Most of the injured were hurt by the car, and at least two were stabbed. One had a fractured skull.

Columbus police Chief Kim Jacobs, asked whether authorities were considering the possibility it was a terrorist act, said: “I think we have to consider that it is.”

Republican Vice President-elect Mike Pence called the episode “a tragic attack” and said “our prayers are with them all.”

U.S. Rep. Adam Schiff of California, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, said the bloodshed “bears all of the hallmarks of a terror attack carried out by someone who may have been self-radicalized.”

“Here in the United States, our most immediate threat still comes from lone attackers that are not only capable of unleashing great harm but are also extremely difficult, and in some cases, virtually impossible to identify or interdict,” he said.

Ohio State’s student newspaper, The Lantern, ran an interview in August with a student named Abdul Razak Artan, who identified himself as a Muslim and a third-year logistics management student who’d transferred from Columbus State in the fall.

The technical conversion from Verizon to FTR morphed into an abominable nightmare. FTR descended upon its newly acquired 3.7 million Verizon customers like a black sun.

saphat, can you imagine the ensuing entropy in a four-kid household without phones, broadband and video for almost a month? FTR’s share price crashed from $5.75 to $3.10, and months after the merger ink dried, problems still persist, and it takes weeks getting a technician to repair the problem.

I wouldn’t touch FTR with the devil’s pitchfork. Frontier has a below-average safety ranking, worrisome financial strength, poor earnings predictability and, according to Value Line, a “weak Price Growth Persistence rating” of 17, with 100 being the highest. Management’s blundering attempts to convert 3.7 million Verizon customers into FTR’s service universe were a prodigious nightmare. And integrating 11,000 Verizon technicians with 19,000 Frontier technicians has become a technical Tower of Babel.

FTR’s feeble management took on billions of dangerous, high-cost debt to buy Verizon’s assets. And FTR’s over-optimistic repayment schedule

leaves little room for miscalculation, especially if interest rates rise. So if interest rates move higher, the economy slows, management’s technical expertise continues to stink and this acquisition fails to achieve expected synergies, FTR will be in very deep cotton!

FTR has $2 billion in debt coming due in 2020, $2.4 billion in 2021, $2.5 billion in 2022 and $4.5 billion in 2025.

It should be noted that FTR’s cumulative earnings during the past 10 years wouldn’t even cover that first debt payment. Be mindful that every year since 2006, FTR’s dividends have greatly exceeded earnings.

Meanwhile, FTR’s dense board had to reduce the dividend three times to meet the company’s debt obligations.

And considering the aggressive debt payment schedule, some believe that FTR will be forced to cut the dividend again to pay its obligations.

Many analysts rate a company’s management skills based on net profit margin. A net profit margin is net income – defined by InvestingAnswers as “the amount of money remaining after all operating expenses, interest, taxes and preferred stock dividends (but not common stock dividends) have been deducted from a company’s total revenue” – expressed as

19 a percentage of revenue. Frontier’s feeble 3.5 percent net margins are an embarrassment to the telecommunications industry. AT&T’s NPM is 10.7 percent. Verizon’s is 12.3 percent. And the NPMs for telecom companies CenturyLink, Consolidated Communications, BT Group and BCE Inc. range between 5.2 percent and 14.3 percent.

FTR’s projected net profit margin of 1.1 percent for 2017 is concerning.

Some suggest that FTR’s gormless management and drossy board have failed to adequately manage FTR for shareholders. It’s suggested that FTR’s management and board members need industrial-sized enemas and that after this procedure, they should be replaced immediately. Lousy management and low net profit margins are the reasons that Citigroup, Market Edge, Deutsche Bank, Macquarie Group, Value Line and Oppenheimer have “underperform” ratings on FTR. Short-term speculators could temporarily trade the shares up a point or so in the coming six months, but the prospect of a dividend cut and lower earnings in 2017 is off-putting.

Cyber Monday transforms as shoppers are more connected

NEW YORK – The Monday after Thanksgiving still is a time when millions of Americans pause to check out online deals and check off items from their gift list – but a one-day Cyber Monday frenzy appears to be going the way of the dial-up modem.

Shoppers who have high-speed connections at home and on their phones are pouncing on deals that stores are spreading out over several days, leaving the so-called Cyber Monday online shopping bonanza in danger of losing its title as the top online sales day.

“Because Cyber Monday is no longer about the connection, it’s just another sales day that I can plan for, like a Labor Day sale or Fourth of July sale,” Gartner analyst Gene Alvarez said. “’I know it’s coming, does it fit into my schedule, and will I do my holiday shopping that day, Black Friday or wait to see what comes up later?”

So instead of doorbuster markdowns on a select few products, retailers are shifting to a stream of discounts and

alerts during the entire week via email and social media. Cartwheel, Target’s digital app, started offering holiday deals including 50 percent off one toy a day on Nov. 1. Amazon started offering 35 days of Black Friday deals on Nov. 16.

And Walmart kicked off its Cyber Monday deals on Friday for the first time as it aimed to grab customers ahead of its competitors.

“It’s really this weeklong flow of deals,” said Shawn DuBravac, chief economist at the Consumer Technology Association.

Lea Bishop from Carmel, Indiana, picked up tickets to the Texas Tenors at her local performing arts center because they had a rare buy-two-get-two-free deal. “It’s those once-a-year deals that I’m looking for today,” she said. Otherwise, she noticed retailers have been spreading out deals.

“It seems like they should rename Black Friday to Black Friday Week and rename Cyber Monday to Cyber Monday weekend,” she said.

Matthew Cannata of New Britain, Connecticut, said he and his wife meticulously map out their shopping week-

end. They hit the stores Thursday night and Friday morning and started browsing online Saturday. They saw more discounts early this year and use services such as buying items online and picking them up in the store, Cannata said.

“We are casting a wide net on any and all types of gifts,” he said.

On Monday, he bought an Amazon Tap smart speaker for $40 off at $90 on Amazon.com and Bluetooth stereo headphones for $30, $100 off the original price.

The Monday after Thanksgiving has been the busiest day of the year for online shopping since 2010, and referred to the day when people returned after the holiday weekend to offices where they had high-speed internet connections.

Cyber Monday still packs the biggest punch in terms of a single online shopping day – for now. Shoppers spent $540 million between midnight and 10 a.m. Eastern time on Monday, affirming that sales are expected to total $3.36 billion, up 9.4 percent from a year ago, according to an early tally by Adobe Digital Insights, which tracks online retail transactions.

Research firm comScore predicted that online spending on Cyber Monday will jump to $3.5 billion from $3.12 billion last year, and will release its tally for the day on Wednesday. The firm’s preliminary holiday shopping forecast, which includes November and December, is for online sales to rise as much as 19 percent to $81 billion.

Overall, the National Retail Federation trade group is forecasting holiday sales for the November and December period to rise 3.6 percent to $655.8 billion, better than the 3 percent growth seen in the year-ago period.

Opening week raises local teams’ prospects It’s difficult to draw a lot of conclusions from the three or four games that most boys basketball teams play during the one-week span that kicks off a season.

But after the conclusion of last week’s Thanksgiving tournaments, we’re beginning to get a clearer picture of how things might stack up for some of the local teams as the 2016-17 season gets underway.

Heading into last week, the consensus was that with several key players back from last year’s squad that lost in the quarterfinals, Joliet West not only was the team to beat in the area but also deserving of a high ranking among teams throughout Illinois.

While coach Nick DiForti’s team went 4-0 to win the title at its own Tiger Classic, a couple of games raised some concerns. After West prevailed against a deliberate Rich South squad, it needed to make a shot at the buzzer to pull out a 67-65 win over Lincoln-Way Central.

If West wants to again challenge as one of the state’s best, it has to show it can execute against any style of play.

The exciting display of steals and slams that it put on against Tinley Park in its opener doesn’t figure to be a nightly occurrence for the talented Tigers.

After experiencing two close calls in the middle games of its tournament, I’m encouraged by the way that West finished by capturing a decisive victory over a good Brother Rice team.

With the exciting duo of Teyvion Kirk and Trevian Bell leading the way, look for this squad to continue to improve over the next few weeks. We

The third-seeded Flyers (25-7), who are ranked 18th in the nation, face sixth-seed Ashland (23-10) at 1:30 p.m. at Ferris State in Big Rapids, Michigan. The winner of that match plays second-seed Findlay (21-9) or seventh-seed Cedarville (26-8) on Friday.

On the other side of the bracket, top-seed Ferris State (28-5) takes on eighth-seed Truman State (18-16)

while fourth-seed Rockhurst (27-6) meets fifth-seed Saginaw Valley State (19-11). The regional championship is scheduled for Saturday.

The winners of each of the eight regionals advance to the quarterfinals, which take place Dec. 8 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The semifinals and finals are Dec. 9 and 10.

Coach Lorelee Smith’s program played in the regional finals in both 2007 and 2009 and reached the regional semifinals in 2010 and also last season.

Although it let a big third-quarter lead slip away, the Indians put themselves in position to win the tournament for the first time and did so when Adrian Paige sank a three-pointer at the buzzer to give his team a 39-37 win. Jonny Butler impressed throughout the tournament and was rewarded for his effort by being selected as the event’s MVP. While the Indians have a different cast this season, they’re not unlike past squads who are content to play a deliberate style while making things difficult with their tough defensive play.

While it came up just short of winning a fourth-straight WJOL title, Joliet Central looks like it should have another successful campaign.

The transition from Jeff Corcoran to Lawrence Thompson Jr. figured to be a smooth one, which is why I’m not surprised by the Steelmen’s good start. Having watched Thompson-coached teams since he joined Lockport’s staff in the early-1980’s, I knew that he’d be successful in this new setting, just as he was with the Porters.

With Jose Grubbs leading the way, look for the Steelmen to steadily improve as they get more comfortable with their new coach and his distinctive style.

Bolingbrook also won a tournament championship, posting a 3-0 mark at the Decatur Turkey Tournament, where it led both Decatur MacArthur and Decatur Eisenhower by over 30 points at times during its final two contests.

Coach Rob Brost’s Raiders received strong efforts throughout the tournament from Nana Akenten and tournament MVP Malik Binns.

This squad appears to have plenty of talented athletes, so expect them to be a force in the SouthWest Suburban Conference.

After an opening-round blowout against Minooka, there was only one way to go for Lockport, and coach Brett Hespell’s squad did just that, winning its last three games in the WJOL tournament. With Matt Smietanski leading the way, the Porters look to have some scorers this year to go along with their usual strong defensive effort.

The three Lincoln-Way schools all displayed some positives during the week. East looks like it has its best team in a few years after going 3-1 at Joliet West. Central threw a scare

into Joliet West, thanks to a big effort from Aaron Michalak. And West returns last year’s area player of the year, Marco Pettinato, so don’t make too much of the squad’s tough start.

As was demonstrated in the two local tournaments, there were a lot of good, close games, and I expect more of the same throughout the season.

But do we have a team capable of making a playoff run and earning a trophy as Lincoln-Way West did last season and Bolingbrook accomplished the year before? We’ll wait and see.

The last time that the women’s volleyball teams from the University of St. Francis and Lewis University both advanced to their national tournaments in the same year was in 2012.

Beginning tonight, the Saints and Flyers once again will be in national competitions in the same season when pool play in the NAIA tournament gets underway, followed by the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional tournament later this week.

This is the 11th straight NCAA Division II appearance for the Flyers and 16th overall while the Saints are making their 10th NAIA appearance, including their first trip since 2012.

St. Francis (31-11) actually kicked off play in the NAIA competition last

Saturday when it beat Xavier, 3-0, in New Orleans. That advanced it to this week’s competition in Sioux City, Iowa.

The Saints begin pool play in the event today when it meets Dordt (227) at 5 p.m. They take on Grand View (29-6) on Wednesday at 7 p.m. and meet Madonna (31-7) on Thursday at 5 p.m. The eight pool winners advance to the quarterfinals on Friday with the semifinals set for Saturday and the championship on Sunday.

Saints coach Cara Currier will be looking for her 400th win at the school this week. She enters the competition with 398 victories during her 15 seasons with the program.

JJC women optimistic about season

cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – After serving as a coach with Joliet Junior College’s women’s basketball team for 12 years, which includes nine years as the program’s head coach, Shaun Sanderson realizes that a lot of factors have to come together in order to produce a successful squad.

While the current season is young and the Wolves still are coming together as a team and working to become a better group on the court, their coach sees some qualities that figure to pay off for his team as the campaign progresses.

Knowing all too well how his squad needs to perform when they begin play in the rugged North Central Community College Conference, Sanderson is hopeful that all of the pieces of the puzzle begin to come together sooner rather than later.

Although the Wolves were a little shaky in the early going from not having played in six days, they also showed some encouraging signs as their game with Aurora University’s junior-varsity squad played out on Monday at Wills Gym. Deesha Brefford scored 18 points while Lockport graduate Kianna Campbell added 15 points as JJC used a strong third-quarter effort to help it claim a 6948 win to improve to 5-3.

“We have different types of players from different backgrounds, so we’re trying to get them to buy into what we’re trying to do. We’re asking some players who have been leading scorers for a number of years to reduce their role but still score for us. We’re also trying to get them ready for January and February, when it really counts.”

“We’re asking some players who have been leading scorers for a number of years to reduce their role but still score for us. We’re also trying to get them ready for January and February, when it really counts.

“Going in at halftime, we had held them to 23 points, but it didn’t feel right.

We talked about giving a consistent effort every time and having that pep in their step. But we’re a very young team and that’s why we play 30 games.

I like our players’ basketball IQ. If you put them in a position to score and they figure it out. They’re very talented and coachable and also very respectful young ladies and I think that will takes us a long ways.”

Earlier this season, Brefford was named as the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III Women’s Basketball Player of the Week. The freshman guard averaged 29.5 points, 9.5 rebounds, 4.5 steals and 3.0 assists to lead Joliet Junior College to wins over NJCAA Division II schools Prairie State and McHenry County.

On Monday, she scored 7 points in the second quarter to help the Wolves turn a 13-8 deficit after one quarter into a 30-23 halftime lead. Brefford added 6 more points in the third period when JJC used a 22-2 run to take a 54-33 advantage going into the final quarter.

“We’ve done pretty good so far,” Brefford said. “We’ve been slacking a little bit, but we’ll get back there as the season goes on and we still have a long way to go. Everybody works together and encourages each other. If somebody is down, someone is there to pick them back up. Everybody gets along well and we have chemistry, which is real important. But we need to commu-

nicate better, both on and off the court, and have more team-bonding.”

In its most-recent win, the Wolves also got eight points apiece from Joliet West graduate Treanna Perry and Lockport graduate Jamari McAfee while Lincoln-Way Central graduate Rebecca Gorman and Joliet West graduate Kierra Tyler added 5 points each.

JJC trailed early in the second quarter but went on a nice run to close out the initial half with a 7-point lead.

During the big third-quarter run, Gorman and Campbell each scored 5 points while Brefford chipped in with four points.

Eleven area players are team members. They include Angelina Byers (Romeoville Christian), Nia Harris (Romeoville), Morgan Jones (Joliet Central), Cora Likins (Lincoln-Way Central), Bailee McDaniel (Plainfield Central) and Destiny Villalejo (Families of Faith Christian).

“You can definitely see that we have a lot of potential,” Villalejo said. “We have good chemistry so we work great together and we’re willing to share the ball and do what it takes to win. I like how everyone’s uplifting and we always try to pick each other up whenever someone is down. We’re encouraging overall and have a positive attitude. We need to talk more on the court. Once we know better how we all play, that will help each other’s games.”

Johnson named GLVC player of the week SUBMITTED REPORTS INDIANAPOLIS – The Great Lakes Valley Conference announced on Monday that Lewis University redshirt senior guard Jamie Johnson has been named the GLVC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the period ending Nov. 27.

This is the second-straight week that a Lewis player has won the award, with sophomore forward Jessica Kelliher claiming the honors last Monday.

“Jamie had a phenomenal week scoring the ball,” Lewis head women’s basketball coach Kristen Gillespie said. “She is really starting to find her niche within our offense and continues to make everyone around her better.”

Johnson played a crucial role in helping the Flyers to a pair of regional victories last week, averaging 25.5

points-per-game, while shooting 53.8 percent (7-for-13) from three-point range and 52.8 percent (19-for-36) from the field.

Her most impressive performance was a 27-point outing – including 19 points and five three-pointers in the second half – in an 82-57 road victory over Ferris State on Sunday.

For the season, Johnson is averaging a team-best 19 points a game and is shooting 45.7 percent (21-for-46) from 3-point range.

JOLIET SLAMMERS Slammers holiday open house: The

Joliet Slammers will host their annual holiday open house this Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon in the Hall of Fame Room located at the Slammers stadium on Jefferson Street east of downtown.

The public is invited to join the

Slammers for refreshments and snacks as well as to learn more about 2017 ticket plans. There will be kid-friendly activities such as a card-making station for the troops and sugar cookie decorating. Santa Spikes will also be in attendance for photographs.

At Evanston, Bryant McIntosh scored 19 of his 23 points in the second half to lead Northwestern to a 65-58 victory over Wake Forest on Monday night in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

McIntosh struggled in the first half on 2-of-8 shooting, but caught fire midway through the second, hitting 8-for8 from the field for 19 points after the 12:02 mark. His 3 with 1:02 left gave the Wildcats (5-2) a 61-56 lead.

John Collins had 12 points and 16 rebounds and Keyshawn Woods added 12 points for Wake Forest (5-2).

Woods’ 3 cut the Northwestern lead to 61-58 with 30.3 seconds left, but Sanjay Lumpkin scored four straight points to finish the game off for the Wildcats.

Scottie Lindsey added 12 points and Lumpkin finished with 10 points and seven rebounds for Northwestern.

McIntosh had to leave the game early in the second half after taking a shot to the face. After being tended to on the sideline he returned to ignite a 6-0 Northwestern run.

Trailing 42-38, McIntosh scored the game’s next six points to give the Wildcats a 44-42 lead with 11:01 in the second half.

Big picture: Northwestern: After not being able to close out Notre Dame in the final seconds last week, the Wildcats bounced back with a win over another power five opponent. Last week, they defeated Texas, which was ranked No. 22 at the time.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Jonathan Isaac and Dwayne Bacon continue to come through for Florida State.

Bacon scored a game-high 18 points and Isaac got his second double-double of the season (14 points, 13 rebounds) as the Seminoles defeated Minnesota, 75-67, on Monday in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

“I was proud of those guys,” Florida State coach Leonard Hamilton said.

“Dwayne’s shot selection was excellent and allowed pace to come to him. Jonathan asserted himself in the second half, especially getting rebounds.”

The Seminoles (6-1) shot just 34.6 percent from the field in the first half and trailed 33-31 at halftime. They opened the second half by making six of their first eight as part of a 15-5 run over the first five minutes to give them the lead for good.

Bacon, who scored 14 points in the second half, had seven points during the run. Later in the half he had a breakaway dunk off an Isaac block to put FSU up 52-39 with 12:44 remaining.

“In the first half we played their game, which was going down slow and not pushing it up the floor,” Bacon said. “In the second half we just adjusted to play faster, to get stops and move around.”

The Seminoles would lead by as many as 19 (70-51) with 5:01 remaining before the Golden Gophers (6-1) started to cut into the lead.

Bacon has led Florida State in scoring in six of their seven games while Isaac has been the leading rebounder in the past four.

“They made really good player plays. A couple of the times I turned to our guys and said ‘that’s a good play from a good player.’ I thought we played really solid defense,” Minnesota coach Richard Pitino said.

Akeem Springs and Nate Mason led Minnesota with 11 points. The Gophers came into the game shooting 47 percent from the field but was a season-worst 19 of 58 (32.8 percent).

Big picture: Minnesota: The Gophers were seeking their first 7-0 start since 2008-09 but struggled in their first road game of the season. With five newcomers, Pitino saw the game as a good early test before conference play starts later this month.

Florida State: The Seminoles snapped an eight-game losing streak in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge and went 2-1 during a stretch of three games in five

days. Both of those wins came against Big Ten teams.

Letdown: Minnesota’s Amir Coffey, who came into the game leading the team in scoring at 15.8 points a game, was held to a season-low seven points.

The freshman guard was 3 of 10 from the field and got into early foul trouble.

Stat of the night: Florida State had a decisive 40-18 advantage in points in the paint.

Senior center Michael Ojo had 12 points, marking his second double-figure scoring game of the season and third of his career, and sophomore Christ Koumadje had seven points.

Up next: Minnesota: The Gophers face Vanderbilt on Saturday in a neutral-site game at Sioux Falls, South Dakota. It is the second straight season the Gophers are playing a game in Sioux Falls.

Florida State: The Seminoles will take part in the BB&T Classic in Washington, D.C., on Sunday as they will play George Washington.

LAKE FOREST – The Bears are placing their 15th player of the season on injured reserve, and it’s another starter and leader.

Inside linebacker Danny Trevathan ruptured the patella tendon in his right knee late in Sunday’s loss to the Titans, John Fox confirmed.

“He’s obviously a very talented player, one that we targeted and went after,” Fox said. “... It was a semi-contact injury, kind of behind the ball, he planted wrong and the injury occurred. He’ll fight back, he’s been through it before.

Had a similar injury a couple years ago that he worked through and he’ll do the same off of this one.”

Trevathan, despite missing two games with the thumb injury, was second on the team with 66 tackles. He also had four passes defensed and one sack.

John Timu will likely start in his spot next to Nick Kwiatkoski, who is starting for the suspended Jerrell Freeman.

Recapping the drops: Fox attributed the high number of drops from Bears pass catchers in Sunday’s loss to the Titans, including two in the end zone on the final drive, to a lack of game experience.

“I can honestly say I’ve been doing this for a long time, no matter what team, even as an assistant coach – I don’t know that I’ve ever seen receivers catch more balls than I do in practice,” he said. “I think it’s just a matter of being out there more. Like I mentioned yesterday, I think Marquess Wilson, it was his second game this season. He hasn’t been playing football for months and months.

Toews, who suffered an upper-body injury Wednesday in San Jose, didn’t practice Monday and is questionable against the Florida Panthers on Tuesday night at Jonathan the United Center.

The Hawks were Toews dominated in faceoffs and puck possession in each game he missed but managed to beat the Anaheim Ducks, 3-2, and earn a point out of a 2-1 overtime loss to the Los Angeles Kings.

“When you’re missing a guy like that, you’ve got to find other ways to work around it,” said Marcus Kruger, the Hawks’ next best at winning faceoffs (48 percent). “I think we did a good job, but we obviously want him back as soon as we can.”

Toews does a lot of things, but his ability to win faceoffs against the NHL’s best centers is reason enough to want him back. Since he left against the Sharks, the Hawks have won just 50 of 155 faceoffs the past two-plus games (32.3 percent).

They won 26.8 percent against the Ducks, as season low, and won 36.2 percent against the Kings. As a team, the Hawks have already plummeted from 14th in the NHL (49.7 percent) to 29th (47.9 percent) – a stat their faceoff guru, Yanic Perreault, pointed out Monday to coach Joel Quenneville.

Toews is off to a slow start offensively but is having a great season at the dot – even for him. Winning more than 50 percent is considered good, and Toews’ career win rate is 57.2 percent.

He has taken 484 faceoffs this season, fourth-most in the NHL, and has won 292 for a 60.3 percentage. He has won 61.2 percent at even strength, 59.7 percent on power-plays and 55.4 percent while the Hawks are shorthanded.

Artem Anisimov and Kruger take most of the key faceoffs when Toews is out, and each is winning less than 50 percent.

“I thought we did relatively well without starting with the puck against two good teams, but we know how good Johnny is – as good as anybody in the league,” Quenneville said. “We certainly miss that aspect of it, and the other guys (on the ice) got to know that we need to be improving, not just the centermen. We need help.”

Getting Toews back would be a big boost. He might take part in the morning skate but will be re-evaluated Tuesday regardless.

Maintenance crew: Toews wasn’t the only one missing from practice. Anisimov, Marian Hossa and Scott Darling also were absent. Anisimov and Hossa took maintenance days, and Darling was sick. Goaltending coach Jimmy Waite stood in for Darling, who is expected to back up Corey Crawford on Tuesday.

DENVER – Weed is winning in the polls, with a solid majority of Americans saying marijuana should be legal.

But does that mean the federal government will let dozens of state pot experiments play out? Not by a long shot.

The government still has many means to slow or stop the marijuana train. And President-elect Donald Trump’s nomination of Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions to be the next attorney general has raised fears that the new administration could crack down on weed-tolerant states 20 years after California became the first to legalize medical marijuana.

“We need grown-ups in charge in Washington to say marijuana is not the kind of thing that ought to be legalized.

It ought not to be minimized, that it’s in fact a very real danger,” Sessions said during an April Senate hearing.

The Controlled Substances Act bans pot even for medical purposes. A closer look at some of the government’s options for enforcing it:

TAKE ’EM TO COURT: The government

rarely invokes its authority to sue states, but it’s the quickest path to compliance. The Justice Department could file lawsuits on the grounds that state laws regulating pot are unconstitutional because they are pre-empted by federal law.

Something similar happened in 2010, when the Justice Department successfully sued Arizona to block an immigration law that conflicted with federal immigration law.

Federal courts can also compel action, not just block it, as in Kentucky last year, when a county clerk was ordered to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples after a landmark Supreme Court ruling.

Twenty-eight states and Washington, D.C., allow marijuana for medical or recreational purposes. The government has yet to sue any of them.

RAID POT BUSINESSES: The govern-

ment could avoid court entirely if it doesn’t mind a more expensive option: law-enforcement raids.

The Drug Enforcement Administration retains the legal ability to shut down anyone selling or growing pot, but there has been no coordinated federal attempt to close pot producers in multiple states. The agency has said repeatedly that it does not have the resources to pursue ordinary pot users.

And a federal agency probably will not spend limited resources busting people growing pot for personal use, said John McKay, a former U.S. attorney in Washington state.

“Who is going to stop people from smoking pot in a residence in Denver?

Federal agents?” he said. “They are going to stop doing terrorism investigations and start arresting people for pot?

That, to me, is crazy.”

Still, a series of raids could upend the marijuana landscape and chill investment in the fledgling industry.

FINANCIAL HURDLES: It’s the biggest complaint in the weed business: taxes.

Businesses selling marijuana cannot use tax breaks or incentives offered to other small businesses, and some of them say they pay 80 percent or more of every dollar on taxes and fees. They have limited access to banking because many financial institutions are leery of the paperwork they are required to file on clients working with marijuana.

Colorado officials tried last year to ease the banking burden by setting up a special credit union to safely handle pot-shops money, only to see the Federal

Reserve Bank and federal courts block the effort.

As long as Congress and the new administration leave those hurdles in place, the marijuana business will grow haltingly. Voters may generally support pot legalization, but few have sympathy for a pot entrepreneur unable to become a multimillionaire because of banking obstacles.

STRICTER REGULATIONS: Government officials who are skeptical of marijuana but also leery of going against public opinion can use regulation and red tape to slow commercial pot.

Legalization opponents frequently decry the strength of today’s marijuana, an argument that provides political cover for pot skeptics who once used the drug themselves and gives legalization opponents a backdoor route to blocking weed.

In Colorado, for example, marijuana skeptics nearly succeeded earlier this year in getting state lawmakers to cap commercial pot potency. The proposal would have banned some 80 percent of the pot products on shelves.

Delays can be just as damaging. Even in Colorado, the first state out of the gate with recreational stores, businesses

complain of long waits to get permits or licenses. A few shops were hobbled in 2015 when Denver health authorities raised alarms about pesticides and banned the sale of thousands of plants.

In Alaska, voters legalized pot in 2014, but shops are only just now opening. Washington state spent more than a year mulling rules for the pot business.

The marijuana industry has grown under three presidents, each opposed to legalized weed.

The Obama administration has generally shied away from pursuing commercial operators who comply with state-level rules. When states began pushing the marijuana experiment beyond the medical realm, former Attorney General Eric Holder urged them to keep the drug away from criminals, kids, federal lands and other states where it remains illegal.

Marijuana activists say the pot experiment is too far along for anyone to stop, but the industry is anxious. When Sessions was announced as the attorney general nominee, the pro-legalization group Drug Policy Alliance didn’t mince words.

“This,” the group announced in an urgent email to supporters, “was our worst nightmare.”

CHICAGO – The American Academy of Pediatrics has strengthened its warnings about prescribing codeine for children because of reports of deaths and risks for dangerous side effects including breathing problems.

The academy’s advice, published in a report Monday in its medical journal, Pediatrics, mirrors warnings from the Food and Drug Administration about using codeine for kids’ coughs or pain.

Studies suggest it is still commonly prescribed by doctors and dentists despite the risks and lack of evidence that it works to relieve coughs.

Doctors and parents should choose another remedy when possible, in-

cluding acetaminophen and ibuprofen for pain and simple remedies such as ice or popsicles after tonsillectomies, said Dr. Charles Cote, a Boston anesthesiologist and co-author of the report.

“Maybe a little pain is better than the alternative,” he said.

THE DRUG

Codeine is an opiate drug once commonly used in over-the-counter cough syrups and as a painkiller, particularly after surgery. But the report notes that a rare genetic variation makes some people metabolize it too quickly, potentially resulting in excessive sleepiness and difficulty breathing. A different genetic variation makes the drug ineffective for pain relief in as many as a third of

patients.

It is available by prescription, including in cough syrup sold in pharmacies in 28 states, Cote said.

THE RISKS

Codeine has often been prescribed for pain relief after tonsillectomies, but the FDA has advised against this use. These operations are sometimes recommended to treat enlarged tonsils that cause sleep apnea – a common condition involving breathing pauses while sleeping. The condition has been linked with obesity and Cote said children with sleep apnea are particularly vulnerable to codeine-related breathing difficulties.

The academy report cites an FDA review that found 21 codeine-related deaths in children younger than 12

and 64 cases of severe breathing problems over five decades.

THE ADVICE

Better education of parents and doctors is needed, along with additional research on risks and benefits of codeine and non-opioid painkillers for children, the report says.

A previous academy report highlighted codeine’s risks and lack of benefit in treating coughs. The new report is more comprehensive, adding concerns about using codeine for pain along with information on deaths.

Opioid drug safety issues and the need for better opioid research in children were among topics raised last week at a two-day FDA advisory committee meeting.

But here’s the catch with CPAP: You have to use it. Some people find CPAP uncomfortable at night and don’t use it as prescribed.

There are other options. For example, an oral appliance, which looks like a mouth guard or retainer, can help prevent your tongue from falling back and blocking the airway while you sleep. For many people who find CPAP uncomfortable, this is a pretty good option.

If you do have sleep apnea, try some lifestyle changes. They may reduce your apnea episodes enough to avoid the need for treatment.

• Turn over. In some people, apnea occurs only when they’re on their back. If that’s true for you, buy a body pillow to keep you on your side.

• Avoid alcohol. Alcohol is a muscle relaxant. It can slacken the tissues of your throat while you sleep.

• Stop smoking. Cigarette smoking causes the upper airway to swell.

• Lose weight. One of the best ways to prevent – or eliminate – sleep apnea is to shed extra pounds.

These changes not only can improve your sleep apnea, they also may reduce your risk of heart trouble and strokes.

asked if I snore. When I told the doctor my husband says I snore a lot, the doctor said snoring can be a sign of heart disease, particularly in postmenopausal women. What does snoring have to do with heart disease?

Dear Reader: Snoring is not a sign of heart disease, but it can be a sign of sleep apnea. And people with sleep apnea are at greater risk for heart disease.

Sleep apnea is a condition that causes brief, repeated pauses in breathing throughout the night. A woman’s risk of sleep apnea rises after menopause. That’s when levels of the hormone progesterone (which increases the number of breaths per minute) decline. In addition to affecting your slumber, sleep apnea can threaten your heart health.

My colleague Dr. Lawrence Epstein is associate medical director for the Sleep Clinic at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He explains sleep apnea is a risk factor for high blood pressure, which raises the risk of both heart attacks and strokes. Sleep apnea also is more common in people who are obese. And obesity is itself a risk factor for heart disease.

So that’s why your doctor asked about snoring. If you have sleep apnea, you might be at higher risk for heart disease.

Snoring is just one sign of sleep apnea.

Other signs include daytime drowsiness, morning headaches or mood changes.

If your doctor suspects sleep apnea, he or she may refer you for a sleep study. This test can confirm or rule it out.

The gold standard treatment for sleep apnea is continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). CPAP blows air into the airways to keep them open at night. It is

When your daughter and son-in-law signed up the child for sports, they should have thought it through. Rather than impose upon you, perhaps they should ask the parents of other children in the program if your granddaughter could ride along.

North’s four-club rebid was a splinter: four-card spade support, game-going values and a singleton (or void) in clubs. It was a slight overbid, especially since North has such bad trumps. If South had had weak spades and strong clubs, making three no-trump the best game, it would have been hard to get there over four clubs! But a three-spade rebid would have been a tad cautious.

If only he could have bid three-andtwo-thirds spades.

The winning line, assuming there was one, depended upon guessing correctly. If trumps were 4-1, declarer needed the diamond finesse to be winning. But if the spades were the more-likely 3-2, he could afford to lose a diamond as long as he took two club ruffs on the board. Then, his 12 tricks would be four spades, two hearts, three diamonds, one club and the two ruffs.

However, it was not that straightforward. After quite some time running different play sequences through his mind, South saw the best plan. After the club ruff at trick three, he led a low diamond from the dummy. East won and played another trump, but declarer won, ruffed a second club, took the top hearts, ruffed a heart, drew the missing trump and claimed.
