Bowman Dairy Company – Mokena The Bowman Dairy Company began in downstate Illinois in the 1870s, when Johnston R. Bowman traveled to St. Louis from the family farm to arrange a market for the milk produced by farms in his area.

Bowman soon started the J.R. Bowman Milk Company and began to transport the milk by horse and wagon from his family farm in Sandoval, Illinois. By the 1880s, the family-run business prospered.

In 1885, J.R. Bowman entered the Chicago dairy market by purchasing the milk business of M. A. Devine. Six years later he sold his St. Louis operation and moved to Chicago where he formed the Bowman Dairy Company.

Over the years the Bowman Company expanded its markets outside of Chicago and built large bottling plants on the South Side of Chicago. One such plant was built on Wolf Road in 1907, next to the Rock Island tracks in Mokena.

The Bowman Company, once an employer of more than 3,000 Chicago employees and a leading supplier of dairy products in the Chicago area, also was one of Mokena’s more flourishing enterprises.

The company also owned several subsidiaries, other dairy companies, powered milk and powdered egg companies in other cities, primarily in the Midwest.

During the 1940s, the company began concentrating on marketing powdered milk products to commercial bakeries and the U.S. Armed Forces. At one time, Bowman Dairy Company was the largest home-deliverer of milk in the world.

The Bowman Company continued to flourish as a large business until 1966, when losses in the home delivery sector of the business forced the company out of the dairy business completely. The business eventually purchased by local rival, the Dean Foods Company.

Will County circuit clerk reflects on end of 5 terms in office

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – After serving 20 years as the circuit clerk of Will County, Pam McGuire will retire this week.

“I did five terms because I love the job. There was always something to fix,” she said. “I’m a ‘fixer.’

I wanted to make things more efficient for employees and the public.”

Since 1996, McGuire has been responsible for managing every document filed in Will County court from an electronic ticket issued this past week to a case from 140 years ago.

The clerk’s office has 165 employees.

McGuire grew up in Phillips, Wisconsin. She had a filing job with the FBI in Washington, D.C., before a desire to be closer to her family brought her to the Joliet area. As computers became common in the offices where McGuire worked, she learned basic programming and graphic design.

“It wasn’t intimidating at all. I’ve always been fascinated with computers,” she said.

But filing items at the circuit clerk’s office for local lawyers was “awful.”

“They were not customer service-oriented. It felt like you were interrupting them when you came in,” McGuire said. “It certainly seemed that way to [the general public], and attorneys said it was the same for them.”

So McGuire decided to change things and ran for office for the first time.

“I had three kids and thought [the job] would be a good opportunity. They said I had a 50-50 shot. I thought, ‘Good enough,’ ’’ she said.

Before long, McGuire was pulling into the employee parking lot.

“I looked up at the sign that said ‘circuit clerk’ and thought, ‘Oh, my God. What have I gotten myself into?,’ ” she said with a laugh.

She began by dealing with the stacks of boxes piling up on the floors of the office – case dispositions that had yet to be submitted to police for criminal records.

McGuire began cleaning up the backlog of written files and started to record information electronically.

“Now all of this information is exchanged digitally between different agencies. The files are electronically imaged. There’s e-filing online. I think it’s made things more efficient for everybody,” she said.

While technological improvements were inevitable, McGuire’s leadership has managed the changes better than other counties, Will County Chief Judge Richard Schoenstedt said.

“I think the importance of what she does is incredibly understated,” Schoenstedt said. “There have been many times I’ve heard of an issue in

another circuit, and when I bring it up, she’s already heard about the issue and taken steps to resolve it here.”

Schoenstedt said he feels McGuire has been able to manage both her staff and technology to get the most efficient service from both.

“She’s not watching every file, but there’s a good administration and everyone is trained, so they are keeping track of every file,” he said.

Earlier in the month, Courtroom 402 was dedicated to McGuire. The “courtroom of the future” features computer workstations for attorneys and flat-screen monitors for jurors and the courtroom audience – technology McGuire has championed.

McGuire said she will miss her staff and the job, but she won’t miss political campaigning.

Community comes together for Christmas tree event

fsarver@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Plainfield residents celebrated a new holiday tradition Saturday evening that lit up Village Green Park with Christmas spirit.

Residents cheered and clapped as the lights on Christmas trees decorated by community groups were turned on by a special guest – the Grinch.

Dressed in a Santa outfit, the Grinch triggered the lights after the residents counted down from 10.

The infamous Dr. Seuss character starred in a TV movie that – like the Plainfield Township Park District itself – turns 50 this year.

“He looks pretty good for his age, doesn’t he?” said Cheryl Crisman, the park district’s recreation director, to a crowd gathered around the main 12-foot-tall center tree.

Crisman said the park district decided to do the inaugural tree-lighting ceremony for its 50th anniversary, blending the district’s anniversary with that of Dr. Seuss’ Christmas tale, while also complementing the Candlelight Christmas event held the same evening in downtown Plainfield.

“The [park district] is pleased to celebrate our 50th anniversary by starting a new tradition here in Plainfield,” Crisman said.

Residents appeared to enjoy not only the sight of bright Christmas trees, but also coffee, hot chocolate, cookies and a viewing of “Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas.”

Crisman said 24 community groups decorated the trees at Village Green Park. Those groups included families, businesses and others such as United Way of Will County, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts and the Association of Plainfield Teachers. Some of the businesses with trees included Heartland Bank & Trust and Associated Orthodontists.

“It’s just a good sampling of the different businesses in our community,” Crisman said.

She said she’s been making gingerbread houses for 50 years.

“This is the most unique one I’ve ever done,” she said.

Plainfield resident Chamus Burnside-Savazzini came to the event with her husband and daughter after learning about it from a flier.

“This is fun. ... I think it’s a really good event,” she said.

Time for gratitude

Thanksgiving is supposed to be a time to be thankful, but with the stress of the holidays (which we can bring on ourselves) and dealing with life on life’s terms, it isn’t always so.

I can think of many things I am grateful for this Thanksgiving and beyond.

I spent an early Thanksgiving with my family in Michigan where I grew up. I am grateful for the time spent with my mom, sisters, nieces and everyone’s significant others.

I am grateful that my mom comes back with me after our early Thanksgiving to spend time with me for a second Thanksgiving with my sons and my husband’s family. Mom and I also get to bake our traditional goodies while she’s here, such as gingerbread men, Russian tea cakes and her holiday nut bread (much better than fruitcake).

While still in Michigan last week, I went to get gas one day and noticed a car pull up that appeared to be stuffed with plastic bags. I immediately thought the person might be homeless.

Out came a man, younger than me, with a long stick and a bag. He proceeded to pick through the trash with the stick for cans and bottles, which carry a refundable deposit in Michigan.

I pulled up and asked if I could offer

He proceeded to tell me who he was, why he was down on his luck and how he felt the government had stuck it to him. Keeping a straight face and a smile, my mind’s eye rolled with impatience.

Then I had the thought that I could have some patience and take the time to listen. After all, he seemed to appreciate the friendliness of another person as much as he appreciated the money.

I drove off feeling grateful that I took the time to show kindness to another human being.

Life on life’s terms is not always easy.

In less than 10 years, I lost my brother to an undiagnosed heart condition, my best friend to breast cancer and my father to organ failure.

On one of mom’s previous visits she found a wall hanging while we shopped in downtown Morris.

He understood people went through hard times and passed out information about Alzheimer’s, as well as the dying process, to those who needed it, Nancy said. Jim also cared about and visited the elderly, she added. Rarely did he visit anyone without bringing

At Jim’s wake, Nancy had stacks of Jim’s positive “How Are You?” cards for guests to take. It’s a small way to keep the spirit of Jim’s ministry flowing.

“He wanted people to do their best, and he encouraged them with that,” Nancy said.

Losing even just 5-10% of your body weight takes extra pressure off your veins. Eating a low-salt diet reduces swelling caused by water retention.

Avoid high heels and tight clothing, both of which can reduce blood flow. Elevate your legs when possible, don’t sit with legs crossed, and don’t sit or stand for a long time if possible. JOLIET – Are you having a marvelous Monday?

Hopefully, yes. Because the Rev. Jim Allen of Joliet would enthusiastically encourage others to do so when he handed them brightly colored cards.

These cards said, “Arrange your life to include a positive mental attitude. Have a good word to say. It will brighten each day. Speak your daily word to respond to, ‘How are you?’ ” And then he’d follow up with insisting you have a terrific Tuesday, wonderful Wednesday, tremendous Thursday, fabulous Friday, stupendous Saturday and super Sunday.

Jim always kept a stack on hand to freely dispense to anyone he met. He often quipped, “You can’t afford the luxury of a negative thought,” said Nancy Allen, his wife.

Armed with a deep passion for God and his community, along with a never-ending supply of positive thinking, Jim ministered with exuberance and in abundance.

In fact, Jim’s résumé, listing his training, professional experience and community outreach, is five pages long. Nancy said Jim was a people person and an idea person who motivated others to execute good ideas.

“He gave hugs to everyone,” said Beth Thelo of Channahon, Jim’s daughter. “He was very accepting of

everyone. ... As a father he was very encouraging, supportive and complimentary.”

That acceptance extended to people who society often overlooked. In 2003 at the age of 70, Jim started “Re-creative Ministries: A Ministry for the Disenfranchised – the isolated, the hurt, the bruised, the broken.”

At noon on the first Sunday of each month at the former Jefferson Square Mall in Joliet, Jim hosted an informal and interactive worship service for people struggling with guilt, shame and Rev. Jim depression.

Allen In a 2003 Herald-News article, Jim said his hope was that these people – through sharing their stories – could experience God’s unconditional love and forgiveness and be “re-created” for God’s service.

“We found that to be re-created is a never-ending task,” Jim said in the article. “It seems that God has us, and those that follow him, almost under construction for new hope and healing, support and strength, and peace and power.”

Through the years, Jim served on the board and in leadership roles at Joliet/Will County Project Pride (now Project Acclaim), The Salvation Army, the Greater Joliet Area YMCA, Catholic Charities, the American Red Cross, the Senior Services Center of Will County, the Community Services Council and the former Joliet Ecumenical Clergy Association, among many others.

Jim also was a chaplain for Joliet Area Community Hospice, the Center for Correctional Concerns at the Will County Adult Detention Facility and Silver Cross Hospital. In 1985, Jim started Project Pride to “pull people

JOLIET – The United Way of Will County has a mission to bring business and community together to make a sustainable change in the county.

For almost 80 years, United Way has offered assistance to area residents, supporting programs through agency partners. United Way President and CEO Mike Hennessy said the local United Way organization funds 109 programs through 46 agency partners throughout the entire county.

The Will-Grundy Medical Clinic, located at 213 E. Cass St. in downtown Joliet, receives 10 percent of its funds from United Way. Other sources of funding include private donors and fundraisers. The clinic does not receive any state or federal funds, according to clinic Executive Director Shawn West.

The clinic offers free health care services to 600 patients a month. West said 90 percent of the patients are employed, but are low-wage earners who do not have access to health insurance or health entitlements and who meet required income guidelines.

Trump assails recount push, claims millions voted illegally

NEW YORK – President-elect Donald Trump claimed without evidence Sunday that “millions” voted illegally in the national election, scoffing at Hillary Clinton’s nearly 2 million edge in the popular vote and returning to his campaign mantra of a rigged race even as he prepares to enter the White House in less than two months.

Trump and his lieutenants assailed an effort – now joined by Clinton – to recount votes in up to three battleground states, calling the push fraudulent, the work of “crybabies” and, in Trump’s estimation, “sad.”

The president-elect himself launched a Twitter offensive that spanned more than 12 hours on Sunday, casting a shadow over the legitimacy of an election that he actually won.

“I won the popular vote if you deduct the millions of people who voted illegally,” he tweeted in the afternoon before alleging in an evening tweet “serious voter fraud in Virginia, New Hampshire and California.” Trump’s transition team did not respond to questions seeking evidence of the unfounded claims.

There’s been no indication of widespread vote manipulation, illegal voting or hacking that materially affected the outcome one way or the other. It’s that very lack of evidence that suggests Trump is likely to prevail in recounts.

Trump on Sunday tweeted part of Clinton’s concession speech, when she told supporters they must accept that “Donald Trump is going to be our president,” and snippets from her debate remarks, when she denounced the Republican nominee for refusing to say in ad-

vance that he would accept the Election Day verdict.

This came on top of his saying it was a “scam” that Green Party nominee Jill Stein was revisiting the vote count in Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania. Trump won Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, and as of Wednesday, held a lead of almost 11,000 votes in Michigan, with the results awaiting state certification Monday. His Michigan margin was a hair’s breadth 0.22 percent of the state’s votes.

Clinton leads the national popular vote by close to 2 million votes, but Trump won 290 electoral votes to Clinton’s 232, not counting Michigan. She could conceivably tip the electoral balance in the remote event that all flipped to her in recounts.

Trump returned to New York on Sunday evening after spending Thanksgiving weekend at his West Palm Beach estate. His transition team said the president-elect had scheduled a series of meetings Monday with prospective administration hires.

Among the jobs Trump has still yet to fill: secretary of state. Internal division over the position again spilled out into the open Sunday as Trump senior adviser Kellyanne Conway voiced her concerns with the possibility of Mitt Romney landing such a significant position.

Trump supporters “feel a bit betrayed that you can get a Romney back in there after everything he did,” Conway said. “We don’t even know if he voted for Donald Trump. He and his consultants were nothing but awful to Donald Trump for a year.” She added that she was “reflecting what the grassroots are saying.”

NEW LENOX – The New Lenox Police Department is investigating a report of an attempted sexual assault Saturday.

The incident occurred at 6:26 p.m. between the Hickory Creek Plaza in the 1800 block of East Route 30 and Schoolhouse Manor Park in the 1800 block of Cornell Drive, according to a department news release.

The victim was walking her dog on the path from Schoolhouse Manor Park to Hickory Creek Plaza when she was pushed from behind into a wooded area off the path by an unknown suspect, the release stated. The victim’s head was pushed into the ground as the suspect tried to remove her pants.

The victim was able to fight off the suspect, who fled the scene toward Schoolhouse Manor Park. The victim believes that her dog might have bitten the suspect.

The suspect is described as a male wearing a black hoodie. Anyone with information is asked to call the department at 815-4852500 or anonymously call 815-462-6111.

Police responded about 2:30 a.m. to the parking lot of the retail center where the bar is located in the 700 block of West Jefferson Street after receiving a report that a man was bleeding from the head, Shorewood Police Department Deputy Chief Eric Allen said. The victim was taken to the emergency room at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet and his condition has stabilized.

When police arrived at the scene, they found that the front window of Frosty Tips ice cream shop, located in the same retail center as Skooter’s, had been broken, Allen said. He also said witnesses did not fully cooperate with police, and while he could confirm that a fight took place in the parking lot, he said officers are unsure about how many people were involved, whether the people fighting had come from Skooter’s and other details of the incident.

Allen said that witnesses were being questioned Sunday, that the owner of Frosty Tips would provide the department with video of the fight, and that the department’s investigations division would take over the case Monday morning. Allen said he anticipated an arrest within the next week.

North honors most successful football team in Plainfield history

The Memorial Stadium scoreboard proclaimed East St. Louis the Class 7A football state champion. But in the hearts and minds of the crimson-clad Tiger Nation throng that packed the west side lower level Saturday night at Memorial Stadium in Champaign, the real champions were their Tigers.

Having entered the postseason 0-5 in previous playoff games, the Tigers made Plainfield school history, winning four games and reaching the state final. If not for a couple of big plays and the defensive team speed of the Flyers, the Tigers might have hoisted the state championship trophy Saturday night.

On Sunday afternoon, North students, parents and fans arrived at the school gymnasium for an assembly to honor the most accomplished football team in district history. Coach Tim Kane and the Tigers raised the second-place trophy to the crowd. Sure, the Tigers wanted to bring home the first-place trophy, but what they accomplished will forever be remembered.

North athletic director Ron Lear started the celebration ceremony, and after distributing his long list of thankyous, turned the microphone to the voice of the Tigers, Matt Trusk.

“It’s a great day to be a Tiger. It’s a great year to be a Tiger,” Trusk said to a thunderous ovation. Trusk is the public address announcer at home football games. He introduced the coaches and players to another ovation.

Stoll, Frey stir memories of Carlson VIEWS Dick Goss

Before this season, no Plainfield school had gone beyond the quarterfinals in the state football playoffs.

In 2000, when there was one varsity football team in the district, Plainfield dropped a 28-21 quarterfinal decision to Glenbard North.

That Wildcats’ team often is referred to as the Jake Shields team, a reference to the all-state running back. A standout on the defensive side of the ball was inside linebacker Sean Carlson, who these days is an assistant coach working with the linebackers at Plainfield North.

What North accomplished this season, finishing second in Class 7A after Saturday’s 26-13 loss to East St. Louis in the state championship game, created a special feeling for all involved, no one more so than Carlson.

“I’ve been blessed to be able to coach these two kids the last three years,” Carlson said of Will Stoll and JJ Frey, the linebackers in the Tigers’ 4-2-5 defensive scheme. “They are so good on their reads and their knowledge of the game.

“They know schemes and blitzes.

They’re almost coaches on the field. I trust them to make calls on the field.

They’re not small, but they’re not the biggest guys around, either. Yet they are so fundamentally strong and they read plays so well that their knowledge buys them a couple extra steps.”

Watching Stoll and Frey during North’s historic run stirred memories of Carlson’s playing days at Plainfield – only there are two of him now.

When pressed on that thought, Carlson agreed the comparison has validity.

East St. Louis scored twice in the title game on long passes to all-everything receiver Jeff Thomas. Otherwise, the Tigers’ defense was superb. Remove the two long balls to Thomas and the Flyers managed 137 total yards. Another of East St. Louis’ touchdowns came on an 85-yard interception return.

As usual, it was a team effort for North on defense, with Stoll and Frey in the middle of things.

“The way we approached every game, we always said it was 11 against three, or 11 against five, depending on how many big playmakers the opponent had,” Carlson said. “Like Tim [Kane, the Tigers’ head coach] said, these guys are very unselfish. It was all about team for them.”

Plainfield North assistant coach and former Plainfield High School linebacker standout cornerback Kevin Block said, “We lost this game on two blown coverages and a mistake on offense. We played well in the second half, but it was far too late.”

North planned to punt the ball away from Thomas – a wise move – but that wound up costing the Tigers field position.

“We hurt ourselves in the first quar-

ter trying to punt away from Thomas,” Block said. “We gave East St. Louis a short field. It was a good idea not to kick to him, but we just didn’t come through defensively and gave them the 12-0 first-quarter lead.”

Yet, that did not deter the Tigers, who were a hot topic in the media and on social media ever since controversy arose over the finish of their semifinal victory over Fenwick. Over the final three quarters Saturday, they were much more the team that finished 11-3 and earned a berth in the state finals – especially defensively.

“This was the same type of game as last week [against Fenwick],” twoway lineman Ari Ekowa said. “We got down, but we overcame the adversity.

No matter what the score, we kept playing. That showed the kind of guys we are. We’re not quitters.”

When you combine the results of two other state championship games

to what North accomplished, the Joliet area looks good this football season after all.

Maine South won the Class 8A championship with a 27-17 victory over favored Loyola. The Hawks, you might recall, beat Lincoln-Way East, 34-31, on a late field goal in the quarterfinals.

Also, Morris had a 28-21 lead on Peoria late in the third quarter before the Lions exploded to win, 43-35, in their Class 5A semifinal. Peoria then finished the deal with a 62-48 win over Vernon Hills in the title game.

No predictions of state championships, naturally, but the way it played out suggests Lincoln-Way East and Morris also could have been on track to make good showings in their respective title games, much like Plainfield North did in the Class 7A final.

CLEVELAND – Eli Manning threw two touchdown passes to Odell Beckham Jr., Jason Pierre-Paul returned a fumble for a TD, and the New York Giants extended their winning streak to six, holding off Cleveland 27-13 on Sunday to keep the Browns winless.

Manning had three TD passes. They don’t overwhelm anyone, but the Giants (8-3) do just enough to win and are in position to make the playoffs for the first time since 2011, when they won the Super Bowl.

Manning threw a 32-yard TD pass to Beckham in the second quarter and added a 4-yarder to the star wide receiver with 5:10 left to finally put away the Browns (0-12).

Cleveland has lost 15 in a row since last season. It is 3-30 since ending the 2014 season with five consecutive losses.

BUCCANEERS 14, SEAHAWKS 5: At Tampa, Fla., Jameis Winston threw a pair of touchdown passes to Mike Evans and Tampa Bay’s rejuvenated defense shut down Russell Wilson and Seattle.

Evans scored on receptions of 3 and 23 yards in the opening quarter, a grieving Alterraun Verner had one of two interceptions off Wilson, and the Bucs sacked the Seattle quarterback six times.

RAIDERS 35, PANTHERS 32: At Oakland, Calif., Derek Carr came back from an injured pinkie to lead another fourth-quarter comeback, and the Raiders won their fifth straight game.

Carr threw for 315 yards and two touchdowns despite missing a series after the injury, leading the Raiders (9-2) back from an eight-point deficit in the fourth quarter to clinch their first winning season since 2002.

PATRIOTS 22, JETS 17: At East Rutherford, N.J., Tom Brady tied Peyton Manning for the most wins by a quarterback in NFL history, getting his 200th by throwing a go-ahead 8-yard touchdown pass to Malcolm Mitchell with 1:56 left.

On the Bears’ opening possession of the game, coach John Fox elected to go for it on fourth-and-inches at the Titans’ 33-yard line with the fifth play of the game, a refreshing effort with a 2-8 team.

Unfortunately, Loggains’ decision to ask Barkley to execute a play-action pass to Logan Paulsen was an absurdly bad call that set the tone for the game.

Loggains proceeded to call 53 passes and 19 running plays the rest of the way, giving Howard just 15 more rushes in spite of his 4.7-yard average on the day.

Yes, the Titans are better on defense against the run than the pass, but asking your third-string quarterback to throw the ball 71 percent of the time with his top two receivers in street clothes while your best offensive player, Howard, is being stopped by your play-caller rather than the opposing defense is a guaranteed way to lose a game, and that the Bears did.

Fans seeking a silver lining in that can only hope it will lead to a change in the Bears’ play-calling, a requirement for this young team to start to progress.

Defense helps keep Bears in game after halftime

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com CHICAGO – The Bears are far past moral victories, but they’re not quitting, either, as we saw in Sunday’s 2721 loss to the Titans. At 2-9, however, that “positive” isn’t carrying a ton of weight.

“I think we’ve taken that road a couple times this year. Quite frankly, I think a lot of guys are tired of having to look for the bright side in it and we want that result,” Bears defensive end Akiem Hicks said. “I know I do. I want that result. It’s part of this game and something that we’ll have to swallow, but as much as we’re fighting through things, I know we’re ready for a result.”

Quarterback Matt Barkley’s spirited comeback fell short, but the defense deserves credit for giving him the opportunities in the fourth quarter with improved play.

Titans running back DeMarco Murray was held to 21 rushing yards on nine carries in the second half, a 2.3yard average.

“When trying to stop him, we knew that he was a bounceout rusher. He’s not looking to chop it up in the middle, and that’s what we tried to pro- Nick tect against,” Hicks Kwiatkoski said. “Unfortunately, he got out a couple times, but we did our best to contain him.”

Nick Kwiatkoski, who started for Jerrell Freeman at inside linebacker, had four tackles on the afternoon.

“Just playing gap-sound and correcting some things we did in the first half,” he said about containing Murray. “Communication, knowing where people were and how we were going to play things.”

The Titans had 150 yards of offense in the second half, and the defense held the Titans to field goals on two red-zone possessions, including a goal-line stop, and Tennessee is the league’s best red-zone offense.

It’s not something the Bears want to keep repeating, but it’s what they can lean on during a losing streak – the ability to keep fighting.

“That’s one thing that I’ve said since we’ve been on this tough streak. You look around and a lot of people expect to see a guy not capable of maintaining throughout the game or wanting to throw in the towel, but you don’t see that,” Hicks said. “That’s a great thing.

We’re not getting the result that we want, but at least you know that your brothers – your coaching staff, your personnel – everybody’s in there with you fighting to get a better result out of this.”

The end result, however, is another loss for the Bears, and this one – like

several since early October – is one filled with missed opportunities. The defense stepped up late, but also didn’t record a single quarterback hit.

“We’re going to look at this film and say, ‘Man, we should’ve won this game,’ ” outside linebacker Willie Young said.

Another leader injured: Danny Trevathan left the game with what coach John Fox said appears to be a serious knee injury. He had five tackles in the game.

“Hard to put a value on a guy that is a leader on this team,” Hicks said.

John Timu likely will step into Trevathan’s starting role, which means that the Bears’ ILB position – one that was upgraded heavily this offseason – will go with Timu and Kwiatkoski until Freeman’s suspension ends.

“It definitely leaves a gap in the room,” Kwiatkoski said. “People will have to step up. I wish him the best.”

For just more than three quarters in their 27-21 loss to the Tennessee Titans on Sunday at Soldier Field, the Bears were even worse than fans and analysts predicted, offering little resistance in falling behind 27-7.

Then suddenly, over the last 13:45 of the fourth quarter, the Bears found a heartbeat, backup quarterback Matt Barkley got some rhythm and the Bears were far more competitive than anyone expected.

Barkley finished 28 of 54 passing for 316 yards with three touchdowns, two interceptions and a 72.8 passer rating, and suddenly Bears fans wondered if they’d found a new Messiah to compete for next year’s quarterback job.

The answer is no.

Barkley was tough, competitive and far more efficient in the fourth quarter than anyone expected him to be.

But the facts are his 51.9 percent completion rate and 5.9-yard average per pass are awful, and his 72.8 passer rating would rank him ahead of only Brock Osweiler and Ryan Fitzpatrick, who are tied for last among NFL quarterbacks in the league at 72.2.

In fairness to Barkley, had Mar-

start Sunday over David Fales and to be looked at as someone the Bears might be able to groom as a backup, but that’s it.

Then there is Wilson’s eight-catch day for 125 yards and one touchdown, but that glass also is half empty.

Four of Wilson’s catches for 77 yards came in the 13:45 of garbage time at the end of the game, after he had dropped a beautiful over-theshoulder ball from Barkley from about 30 yards, and an even prettier overthe-shoulder throw of about 25 yards went right between his hands in the end zone.

Wilson will make some plays, but he also still is making all the same mistakes he was making when he arrived four seasons ago.

The drops from Wilson, Bellamy, Meredith and Thompson when the game was on the line are sadly far more relevant than the fact the Bears found a way to make it close.

Bellamy and Thompson each dropped what could have been the winning touchdown pass in the final minute.

I feel as bad for these players as anyone, but life is tough, and we can’t ignore that their play is why the Bears are as bad as they are.

But nothing any Bears player did matched the disappointment and frustration levels of the performance of of-

JOLIET – The University of St. Francis men’s basketball team earned a split in its USF Classic as Jorden Thornton came off the bench to score 21 points in a 102-96 victory over Briar Cliff in a matchup of teams that were ranked in the top five in the preseason NAIA poll.

Jo Jo Ballestero had 19 points, Jean Pietrzak added 13 points, Landus Anderson had 11 points and five rebounds, and Jake Raspopovich contributed 10 points.

Reardon is currently ranked fifth on Loyola’s alltime list with 1,378 kills and sits second in the conference with 3.55 kills a set. The 6-foot-1 outside hitter has 10 double-doubles, has reached double digits in kills 22 times this season and has 20-plus kills on five occasions. Perinar has 125 kills and 38 blocks thus far in her freshman debut. She had double-digit kills in three games and had a season-high 15 against Evansville.

South Florida and Pittsburgh were among six teams to enter The Associated Press college football poll on Sunday, matching a record for the Top 25 era.

USF and Pitt are tied for No. 24. No. 17 Stanford, No. 19 Virginia Tech, No. 20 Navy and No. 22 Iowa also entered the rankings in the second-to-last regular-season poll.

This is the fourth time six teams entered the rankings in one week since

1989, when the AP poll expanded to include 25 teams.

Alabama remained a unanimous No. 1, and Ohio State was No. 2. Clemson moved up a spot to No. 3, and Washington jumped two to No. 4. Michigan dropped two to fifth after its double-overtime loss to Ohio State.

Lincoln Elementary School second-graders met several rescue animals – Summer, a minihorse, Pickles the mule, Mirage the horse and a pony named Buttercup – after donating $1,000 on Nov. 2 to the M & M Acres, a rescue barn in Lockport. The farm’s owners visited the school with the animals to thank students for donating to the facility. Second-grade teacher Laura Bonuchi organized the fundraiser. Students learned about community service and compassion through the project.

Lifestyle changes help GERD Note to readers: This column ran originally in December 2014.

Dear Dr. K: For years I’ve been taking a PPI twice a day for heartburn. My doctor wants me to cut back, or stop altogether. But the idea frightens me. Do you think it’s possible?

Dear Reader: To anyone tormented by frequent heartburn, not taking your daily tablet – or tablets – of omeprazole (Prilosec) or lansoprazole (Prevacid) might seem like a scary idea. These and similar drugs, known as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), are the foundation of treatment for heartburn, also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

GERD occurs when stomach acid backs up into the esophagus. PPIs work by shutting down the acid-producing “pumps” in the stomach. They sharply reduce acid secretion, and therefore the irritation it causes when stomach contents back up into the esophagus.

A number of my patients whose GERD was tamed by PPIs, and now have no symptoms, have been able to successfully taper off of them. This is more likely if they also make the lifestyle changes that reduce the symptoms of GERD. Those include: • Lose weight. Being overweight is the leading cause of reflux.

• Avoid eating large meals. Instead, eat more frequent, smaller meals.

• Avoid eating two to three hours before your normal bedtime.

• Sleep with your upper body above stomach level by elevating the head of the bed slightly on blocks or by using a wedgeshaped cushion. This reduces pressure on the opening between the upper stomach and base of the throat. Just propping up your head with pillows won’t work.

• Avoid certain foods that can trigger heartburn. They include chocolate, caf-

feine, alcohol, acidic foods, spicy foods or fatty foods. Try cutting them out for a while to see if it makes a difference.

• Completely avoid foods with mint.

Mint may loosen the passageway from the stomach to the esophagus and allow acidic material to back up into the esophagus and throat.

What’s the problem with remaining on the PPIs indefinitely? There is some evidence long-term use may increase your risk of developing a type of pneumonia called aspiration pneumonia, and a potentially serious intestinal infection with the bacteria called C. difficile. It also may cause you not to absorb enough calcium, magnesium, vitamin B12 or iron.

To taper down on your PPI, start by gradually reducing the dose and frequency until you are taking the lowest dose once a day. Then, gradually replace the PPI with an H2 blocker, an acid-reducing drug. Examples include cimetidine (Tagamet), ranitidine (Zantac), famotidine (Pepcid) and nizatidine (Axid). Switching to an H2 blocker may help you stop taking a PPI. I don’t think we have solid evidence of serious side effects from long-term use of H2 blockers. The evidence of adverse effects from long-term use of PPIs is somewhat stronger. But suppose you’ve been free of GERD symptoms for several months on a PPI. If you’re committed to lifestyle changes, it’s worth talking with your doctor about how to gradually taper off your PPI.

DEAR ABBY Earlier this year, I moved away Jeanne from home to Phillips move in with my boyfriend. We had been dating for more than a year and were close enough we could see each other whenever our schedules allowed. However, over the past few months, I have been second-guessing that decision. Today’s deal has elements of that, but also three and one are relevant -why? South is in three notrump. West leads his fourth-highest heart, and East puts up the king. What should declarer do?

South’s three-notrump rebid shows some 18-20 high-card points, at least six diamonds, in principle stoppers in the two unbid suits and often a singleton in responder’s suit.

(It is a hand too strong for one diamond - one spade - three diamonds.)

South apparently starts with eight top tricks: four spades, two hearts (given trick one) and two diamonds.

He can also establish three or four more diamond winners. But to collect all of those spade tricks, how does declarer get into the dummy?

The temptation is to cash the top diamonds and assume that the queen will drop, which it is supposed to do 58 percent of the time. Note, though, that if declarer can win six diamond tricks, he has nine tricks via one spade, two hearts and six diamonds.

But just in case the diamond queen will not drop, South should be willing to sacrifice one trick to get the three spade winners in return.

After winning trick one and cashing the spade ace, declarer should lead his diamond 10 or nine. If East ducks, South has six diamond tricks.

If East wins, the diamond jack is a dummy entry.
