JOLIET – After numerous delays, a trial date has been set for a man accused of fatally shooting another man five years ago in a Joliet parking lot.

Jordan A. Arthur, 28, will face jurors next March, Will County Assistant State’s Attorney Chris Koch and Assistant Public Defenders Greg Jordan DeBord and Jason Str- A. Arthur zelecki agreed Tuesday.

Arthur is charged with murder for the June 1, 2011, death of Courtney L. Jordan.

“This is turning, I think, into the oldest case on my call,” Judge Sarah

Jones noted.

The case was most recently scheduled to be tried in July, but the trial has been postponed several times when lawyers have requested delays to review evidence.

Koch and DeBord told Jones all of the evidence that might be used has been exchanged and examined, and neither side expects to receive further reports.

About 1:35 a.m., Jordan, 34, called 911 to say he’d been involved in an argument and was being threatened when shots rang out, police said at the time.

Officers arrived to find Jordan lying facedown with multiple bullet wounds in a parking lot in the zero block of North Hickory Street – a block from his apartment.

Detectives learned Jordan, who had a substantial history of drug charges, was involved with a woman who was dating Arthur at the same time, police said. Arthur was questioned and charged two days later.

Koch told Jones at a pretrial hearing last year that Arthur can be heard on the 911 recording, while DeBord said audio experts would disagree.

Jones agreed that the voice-analysis technique the defense wanted to use in Arthur ‘s trial does not have enough scientific acceptance.

Some states have case law on voice identification, but Illinois does not.

At the time of his death, Jordan was on parole from a 10-year sentence for delivery of drugs in 2005, despite another arrest for drug possession charges two months before he was killed.

Hug denies making threats before beating

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Four people told police that they heard Joliet City Council member Larry Hug make threats to shoot the local businessman who hit him in a bar on March 31.

Hug repeatedly has denied the allegations and said Tuesday that those who said he made the threats lied for the sake of Mark Koenig, the Joliet real estate broker who pleaded guilty last week to disorderly conduct.

“If anything that any of his friends lied about me were true, he wouldn’t have pleaded out,” Hug said.

Koenig could not be reached for comment.

Police reports released in the weeks after the incident were so heavily redacted that they included almost nothing that was told to police about what happened at the Double J Sports Bar on Essington Road.

After Koenig’s plea, the reports were released again by the Illinois State’s Attorney’s Special Prosecutor’s Office with only personal information redacted.

They include conflicting statements, and no testimony was given in court since Koenig pleaded guilty without a trial.

One person present when the incident happened told police about threats to shoot, and others said they heard similar threats at other times.

In a police report that night, Brian Parker, a county employee, quotes Hug saying, “I carry a gun, too, and can shoot you,” just before the incident occurred.

Parker, however, also gave police an account that does not line up with security video from the bar that night. Parker told police that he grabbed his wife, County Board member Annette Parker, and left the area when Hug and Koenig began pushing each other around. He said he did not see hitting occur.

In the video, there is no pushing before Koenig hits Hug repeatedly. Both Parkers are pres-

ent, looking at Koenig as he hits Hug, and Brian Parker pulls Koenig away from Hug. In a subsequent interview with Parker on April 7, according to a police report, “Parker stated that just prior to the fight, Hug stated something about Koenig’s father and then, at that point, the fight ensued.”

It is not clear if Annette Parker stayed at the bar after Hug called police. But there are no reports that night of police interviewing Annette Parker, who also is the marketing director of the Rialto Square Theatre in Joliet. Police did interview Annette Parker on April 8, and she said Hug did not threaten Koenig.

“Parker stated she heard a conversation about veterans or Marines but couldn’t recall what was said just prior to the event,” a report from the interview states. “Parker stated Hug didn’t threaten Mark Koenig and didn’t know if Koenig was provoked.”

In his statement, Hug told police that Koenig was complaining about Mexicans in the United States just before the incident occurred.

“Hug stated he questioned Mark’s comments, stating that it appears this guy is your friend why are you talking about him like that?” one report states. “Hug advised it was at that time Mark yelled three times, ‘He’s a Marine, he’s a Marine, he’s a Marine’ and then walked around the table and hit Larry Hug in the nose area with the palm of his hand in an upward motion.”

The “friend” Hug referred to was Carlos Tinoco of Channahon, who had left the enclosed smoking area shortly before the incident.

Tinoco in one report hours after the incident is quoted telling police that Hug at one point said, “I’ll put a bullet in your head and kick your ass.” Tinoco said he left when the two men began pushing each other.

In another report dated April 8, Tinoco told police that Hug told Koenig, “I’ll shoot you in the face and punch you like a 12-year-old.”

Local organization, schools work together to feed families for holidays

fsarver@shawmedia.com SHOREWOOD – Members of the Visitation & Aid Society of Joliet lined up inside a Jewel-Osco store with a cart ready to be filled with food for Thanksgiving.

The food the members were shopping for Monday morning would be distributed to needy families who have children in Will County-area schools, such as those in Joliet Public Schools District 86, Laraway School District 70C and Rockdale School District 84.

At the Jewel-Osco in Shorewood, a dozen or so members with an empty grocery cart passed by volunteer coordinator Tanja Conte, who gave them bags and a list of grocery items.

“You have a large family,” Conte said to one volunteer who received her bags and grocery list.

For about 25 years, the Visitation & Aid Society has held the volunteer effort to gather food for needy families in area schools and the county health service. This year, the organization is feeding 118 families.

The organization, which began in 1889 and was formally incorporated in 1952, works with welfare and charitable organizations in the Joliet area to provide assistance to families, including food and clothes and other necessities.

Monday’s effort ran quickly and smoothly, like an assembly line, as the members took their grocery carts to the back of the store and picked up items such as turkey, cranberry sauce and vegetables and handed them to Jewel-Osco staff.

“They have been very helpful with us,” Conte said about the company.

The Visitation & Aid Society sponsored five families from each school in District 86 for the food donation effort, and the district’s maintenance staff were on hand to collect the items for delivery at the schools.

Superintendent Theresa Rouse, who came by to see it all in action, said the effort was amazing, especially since it was benefiting other school districts besides District 86.

“It’s very heartwarming, and it just really reaches all those emotions of the holidays to see this kind of community support for our families,” Rouse said.

“The overall feeling of our membership is I don’t want a child to wake up Christmas morning and not have a Christmas present to open.”

Linda Chellino, a volunteer with the Visitation & Aid Society, said its members love the food donation effort and look forward to it every year because they view it as the most important thing they do for the community.

Joliet to hold holiday festival and parade Friday

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The holiday season will be welcomed Friday in downtown with the annual Light Up the Holidays Festival and Parade. One big reminder about the event: It’s more than a parade.

“People think it’s just a parade, but it’s an entire day of fun events for the family, discounts at local businesses, and the Rialto will have a show,” said Lauren Las, marketing and event manager for the Joliet City Center Partnership.

Events start at 10 a.m. with an ice-sculpting demonstration at the Joliet Area Historical Museum, holiday crafts at the Joliet Public Library, and other assorted activities throughout the downtown area. A dozen different institutions and businesses are participating in the activities that lead up to the parade at 5:30 p.m.

The parade is preceded by the lighting of the city Christmas tree in Van Buren Plaza. A fireworks display will precede and follow the parade.

Las said people should check out the schedule of events.

“There’s a lot more going on than you might think,” she said.

The City Center Partnership organizes the event. The University of St. Francis is the major sponsor.

New Lenox debuts illuminated Santa display

mmallory@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – The largest illuminated Santa Claus in the U.S. makes its home not in the country’s northernmost states, such as Alaska and Minnesota, but in New Lenox.

The village earlier this month welcomed the 36-foot-tall, 5,000-pound, 18,500-LED-light Santa from international company Artistic Holiday Designs. Mayor Tim Baldermann said the village first was approached by the company in the spring.

The village didn’t budget any new money for its holiday decorations.

It will cost about $300,000 over three years to pay for the entire arrangement, which includes illuminated trees and other light displays, along with an ice-skating rink. New Lenox will use its marketing budget funds and private donations to pay for it all.

Baldermann said there was some initial criticism about the decorations, but that quickly was outweighed by extensive support from the community and visitors.

“People here are absolutely loving it,” he said. “They’re getting out and taking pictures with it, and putting letters in the mailbox [for] Santa.”

Plainfield residents, students show concern about discrimination

fsarver@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Some residents and students shared concerns at Monday’s Plainfield Community Consolidated School District 202 Board meeting about incidents of discrimination and racism after the presidential election.

A former Plainfield Central High School student and a current Plainfield East High School student said at the meeting that they had heard of incidents in which students were told they would be deported now that Donald Trump won the presidency.

During Trump’s campaign, he has spoken of deporting undocumented Mexican immigrants, building a wall at the U.S.-Mexico border and banning Muslim immigrants. One speaker at Monday’s meeting said the Southern Poverty Law Center, which monitors hate groups, tracked upward of 700 incidents of hateful harassment since Election Day. District administrators said they would follow up on the concerns and also noted the district has a bullying task force and discipline committee to address such issues. Superintendent Lane Abrell said he would speak with principals about incidents brought up at the meeting.

Channahon D-17 votes for small increase in levy

Shaw Media correspondent CHANNAHON – Channahon School District 17’s portion of this year’s property taxes should be the lowest since 2011, based on the district’s estimated levy of 2016 taxes approved Monday by the school board.

With assent from all board members present – members Derek Breen and Mistey Kosek were absent – the estimated levy is $17.59 million, which represents a total increase of $457,700, or 2.7 percent, over the 2015 extension.

This is the first time in four years that percentage has been an increase.

According to the district’s chief school business official, Mike Schroeder, the change in the levy in 2015 was a decrease

of 1.5 percent; the change in 2014 was a decrease of 0.1 percent; and the change in 2013 was down 0.4 percent.

The levy is based on equalized assessed value of property within the school district, which is estimated this year to total $647.43 million – a growth of 3.3 percent from the year before. It’s the healthiest growth the district has seen since 2009, when the EAV increased 26.3 percent from the year before.

The district’s 2016 tax rate is estimated to be 2.7174, which would be the lowest since 2011, Schroeder said, and for the second year in a row after paying off all its debts, the district will not have a bond and interest figure to add to the tax.

The owner of a home valued at $250,000 could see District 17’s portion of their property taxes this year drop an

estimated $12.75 from last year.

The board will vote on its aggregate 2016 levy Dec. 19.

Also at Monday’s board meeting, members got a look at the district’s Illinois At-A-Glance Report Card, which showed the district improving on the standardized PARCC exam. The test examines students on critical thinking and problem-solving skills, among other things, Superintendent Nick Henkle said.

Almost 46 percent of the Channahon students tested were classified as “ready for the next level.” Only 34 percent of students in the state average reached that mark.

“We obviously want to see scores improve,” Henkle said after the meeting.

“That’s what’s important to us. We’ve

improved over last year, and we expect to improve this year. ... But we’re looking at the whole child, and this is a snapshot.”

The report card also lists District 17 schools having an average class size of 24, with 83 percent teacher retention and a lower operation spending per student ($9,588) than state average ($12,821).

The board Monday also thanked the Chanooka Kiwanis Club for donating $1,200 that will go to the district’s MyOn program, which is a year-round online reading platform for students. Henkle said the district will use the money to buy additional books to add to the program’s online library.

The board also hired Julie Bachman as substitute district courier and Pamela Fink as library aide.

JOLIET – The Joliet Park District board plans to fill the vacancy created by the death of Glen Marcum, but candidates running in April need not apply.

The board will not accept applicants who are running for park commissioner in April, when Marcum’s spot and those of three others are on the ballot.

“A few board members felt it would give someone a leg up in the next election if they had already pulled petitions,” Gulas said. “They wanted to make it a fair election come April.

That’s why they opted for that.”

The board has the option to leave the spot vacant until the April 4 election and still may do that depending on the applicants.

“We thought it was the right thing to do to try to operate with a full board,” Gulas said. “That’s assuming we get the spot appointed. We’re not just going to appoint anybody.”

CREST HILL – The city of Crest Hill will host its inaugural Winter Festival from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday at City Hall.

Crest Hill Economic Development and Zoning Manager Scott McMaster said he wanted to put together a holiday event for the city after noticing how many surrounding communities seem to have their own.

“There’s been a good buzz throughout the community the last couple weeks,” McMaster said. “Everybody here seems to be excited for something new to bring the community together.”

About 25 local sponsors with tents and giveaways will provide businesses, organizations and residents an opportunity to interact at the festival, McMaster said.

“Some people may not be familiar with the local businesses we have,” he said.

Another witness, Phillip Cundari Jr. of Plainfield, told police that he was in the patio area of the bar when he “overheard Hug say something to the

suspect about putting a bullet in the suspect’s head.” Cundari said he left the area before the incident.

In another report taken Aug. 10, Adam J. Kolodziej of Joliet, told police he could hear through the wall of the smoking room as Hug said, “I

have a concealed carry license, and I can shoot you and get away with it.”

Kolodziej said he left to notify a bartender before the incident happened.

Asked Tuesday if he carries a gun, Hug said, “No, I don’t. I have no concealed carry. I do not carry a gun.”

Over the years, the organization has found out how to make the “shopping”

utes. She also said they do a survey with social workers and principals from the schools they serve to see whether the organization is meeting the needs of families and if the foods are appropriate.

“We were thrilled we got an overwhelmingly positive reaction,” she said.

Backyard chickens in urban areas is a growing trend, Cipriani said, including in such cities as Naperville and Chicago. The biggest reason residents want to raise chickens, she explained, is to have what she said are healthier and better-tasting eggs, as well as to use the manure to add as a natural fertilizer to their gardens. Keeping free-range chickens is a more humane method to raise the animals, as well, she said.

Cipriani’s neighbor, Charles Davidson, was at the meeting for the presentation.

“I might have been the one who called,” he said of the phone call made to police that alerted them of the chickens.

“If I lived out in the country, I would expect to hear chickens.”

But Davidson said he does not want to have the animals in town.

Another neighbor, Drew Bondale,

said he has lived in the village most of his life and he didn’t mind a few chickens in a backyard. In fact, he said, he thought it would be nice to have some for his young son to play with and learn from.

“I’ve had more problems with people’s dogs,” he said.

Cipriani said she now knows it’s against ordinance, but she asked the board to consider modifying village law to allow chickens in town.

“I’m sure you could find a way to make them pets,” she said. “I have become very attached to them.”

“But where do we draw the line?”

Village President Missey Schumacher asked. “We just made someone get rid of their ducks.”

Schumacher said she recently had someone ask her about guinea hens, which she said that even though they were similar to chickens, were noisy.

“We have to take into consideration the entire community,” Trustee Scott Slocum said, “all 13,000 residents.”

Slocum said that most of the residents he has spoken to about the subject over the past month were against changing the ordinance to allow chickens.

The Village Board did not take any action on the request, preferring to leave the ordinance as it stands. After the meeting, Cipriani said she was appreciative that the board listened to her request and that she has found a home for the chickens at a Wilmington farm.

Trustees on Monday approved changing liquor and tobacco ordinances so that an employee selling packaged liquor in the village must be at least 21 years of age, and a liquor server must be at least 18 years old. Employees selling smoking tobacco or smoking materials in the village now must be at least 18 years old.

Heavyweight contender Alex Stewart dies at 52

Alex Stewart, a heavyweight contender who fought Mike Tyson and nearly beat George Foreman, has died.

He was 52.

Stewart died last week after being rushed to a hospital in Mount Vernon, N.Y., said Mike Gilberg, a close friend of the former fighter. He had a blood clot in his lung, Gilberg said.

“One day he wasn’t feeling good, the next this happened,” Gilberg said.

Stewart fought in a golden time for heavyweight boxing, and he fought almost all the big names of his time. A perennial contender, he was never able to win the big fights of his career but

had a reputation as a smart and tough fighter.

Stewart lost twice to Evander Holyfield, and was knocked out in the first round of his December 1990 fight with Tyson. But it was his April 1992 fight with Foreman in Las Vegas that was the highlight of his career.

Foreman was in the middle of a comeback that he would cap two years later by knocking out Michael Moorer to become the oldest man to win the heavyweight championship at the age of 45 when he met Stewart in a scheduled 10-round bout.

Foreman knocked Stewart down twice in the second round and was battering him in the third, when Foreman motioned to referee Richard Steele to

stop the fight. But Steele let it continue, and Stewart began pummeling Foreman around the ring.

“I thought I had him in the third round, but the referee let it go on,” Foreman said. “I didn’t want to hurt the kid and now the kid hurt me.”

Stewart would lose a controversial majority decision, but it was Foreman who looked like the loser after the fight with his face hidden behind large sunglasses.

“Was that a fight or was that a fight?” Stewart asked reporters afterward.

Stewart lost his second fight to Holyfield the next year, then spent the remainder of his career mostly as an opponent for younger fighters to mea-

sure themselves against. He retired with a record of 43-10 with 40 knockouts after losing his last fight in 1999 to Jorge Luis Gonzalez by second-round knockout.

Stewart was born in London and raised in Jamaica and fought for Jamaica in the 1984 Olympics before turning pro.

Gilberg said after retiring from boxing Stewart was a driver for a liquor distributor in the New York City area, and later worked in a factory making boxes for the same company.

Gilberg said the fighter is survived by his wife, Angella, and a daughter, Ajay-Tenille. Services will be held Nov. 29 at the Pelham Funeral Home in Pelham, N.Y.

The ASSOCIATED PRESS SPRINGFIELD – Gov. Bruce Rauner administration’s plans to implement bereavement leave for union members, but leaders of a public-employee union say the new plan is meant to distract Illinois workers and the public from larger contract negotiation issues.

The contract terms will enable members of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees union to take paid time off after the death of a child or stepchild, the State Journal-Register reported.

The administration said the move

became possible after the Illinois Labor Relations Board ruled last week that contract talks between the state and the union were at an impasse. The decision allowed bereavement leave to be implemented immediately.

“Putting it into effect as soon as possible just seems to make the most sense,” said John Terranova, deputy director of labor relations for the Department of Central Management Services.

Terranova said it was a surprise that previous contracts did not provide time off for such circumstances, which left some employees forced to

use sick or vacation time. He said the union wanted the issue discussed in contract talks, which the administration included in its offer to the union.

But an AFSCME spokesman said the move is meant to divert attention from the Rauner administration’s push to hike employee health premiums by 100 percent while freezing wages for four years, cutting average worker’s pay by $10,000.

This is the third provision since the labor board’s ruling last week that the administration said it intends to implement.

Lawmaker: Ill. dollars should not be used for border wall

CHICAGO – A Democratic legislator wants to prevent Illinois from having financial ties with companies that might build a border wall.

State Rep. Will Guzzardi said Tuesday that the proposed wall that was a cornerstone of Donald Trump’s presidential campaign sends the wrong message.

The Chicago Democrat’s plan proposes divesting Illinois’ pension funds from any businesses involved with the wall. In 2007, Illinois passed an Iran divestment law.

Guzzardi said the proposal is his way of calling on Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner to clarify his views on Trump. Rauner has avoided discussing the president-elect.

Rauner said he’ll review the bill. He wouldn’t directly address the wall, saying rhetoric during the campaign was appalling.

A spokesman says House Speaker Michael Madigan hasn’t taken a position on Guzzardi’s bill. Other legislative leaders didn’t immediately have comment.

Ex-Chicago alderman pleads not guilty to tax charges

CHICAGO – Former Chicago Alderman Edward Vrdolyak has pleaded not guilty to charges stemming from the state of Illinois’ $9 billion tobacco settlement.

Extra-alarm fire reported at Old Chicago Main Post Office

CHICAGO – An extra-alarm fire at the Old Chicago Main Post Office has been struck out with no injuries.

Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford said Tuesday that firefighters were called to the long-vacant structure around 10:30 a.m. The fire was extinguished after about an hour.

EAST CHICAGO, Ind. – Residents of an East Chicago public housing building near a lead- and arsenic-polluted Superfund site said they have tested positive for lead and want the entire building tested.

Sherlene Lowe, who lives at the John B. Nicosia Senior Building, said she and other residents of the East Chicago Housing Authority’s high-rise building have tested positive for lead, the (Northwest Indiana) Times reported. The building is northwest of the Superfund site.

“We have seniors. We have people who are handicapped. We need someone to come in here and get everyone tested,” said Lowe, president of the building’s Resident Council.

Lowe asked the City Council last week to pay attention to the Nicosia building.

City Attorney Carla Morgan said the health department will consider on-site testing, and the housing authority’s attorney said the agency has requested historical testing data from the Environmental Protection Agency.

Local, state and federal officials have focused for the last several months on the West Calumet Housing Complex, along with Carrie Gosch Elementary School and sections of the city east of the housing complex.

Trump begins to back off vows on Clinton, climate

NEW YORK – Two weeks after his election victory, President-elect Donald Trump began backing off campaign promises Tuesday, including his hard line on climate change and his vow to jail “Crooked Hillary” Clinton that had brought thunderous “Lock her up” chants at his rallies.

A top adviser said Trump is now focused on matters that are essential in setting up his administration, not on comments he made during the heat of the campaign.

After a year blasting The New York Times, Trump submitted to an interview with reporters and editors at their Manhattan office.

Among the topics covered, he: • Pushed back against questions about conflicts that could arise due to a lack of separation between his government post and his many businesses, declaring that “the law’s totally on my side, the president can’t have a conflict of interest.”

• Took his strongest stance yet against the “alt-right,” a term often used as code for the white supremacist movement. Although members are celebrating his victory, he said, “It’s not a group I want to energize. And if they are energized, I want to look into it and find out why.”

• Spoke positively not only of fellow Republicans in Congress – “Right now they are in love with me” – but also of President Barack Obama, who he said is “looking to do absolutely the right thing for the country in terms of transition.”

Trump, who left late Tuesday to spend Thanksgiving at his estate in Florida, also continued to work to populate his incoming administration, officially asking GOP presidential rival Ben Carson to head the Department of Housing and Urban Development, according to a person familiar with the offer who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the person was not authorized to discuss the deliberations publicly. To the Editor: In response to Mr. Ramirez’s article about packing his bags and heading for the border wall, let me say this.

The people of the United States have voted for Donald Trump as president-elect and our 45th president.

Many comments were made during this election campaign by both parties and may I say that I myself didn’t approve of many of them. Neither really said what they are going to do with the assistance of Congress to turn this country around and be united again.

We had President Obama for eight years and his campaign slogan was “Change” for both terms. Well, most of the changes implemented were not good, and the “Obamacare” is headed for failure.

We will have Donald Trump for the next four years and no one really knows what will happen, but since he will be our commander in chief, he can’t do any worse than the last eight years of Obama.

We, as Americans, can only give him the respect and a chance to work with Congress to reunite the people and to turn this country around.

Addressing veteran’s voting issue in Shorewood

To the Editor: I read the Letter to the Editor recently sent by Gina Carrier addressing her elderly father being turned away to vote at his polling place. I take my job very seriously as your county clerk in representation of the voters of Will County and was troubled by the handling of this situation by the election judges.

After speaking with Gina, we identified the issue to be that her father’s signature did not match the signature in our system.

By statute, if a registered voter’s signature does not match in our system, we are required to ask for an ID to verify the voter’s identity. (We capture signatures when a Will County resident registers to vote and compare this signature with the one on the signed application on Election Day.) The election judges were following procedure to ask for ID in this situation but, unfortunately, did not follow proper procedure when he was not able to produce an ID.

I plan to address our election judges to make certain they continue to follow the law as stated in their election judge manual while keeping up with the integrity of the election. Please accept my sincere apology to Gina’s father, and I am grateful for his service to our country.

Why did we choose Donald Trump?

To The Editor: Why Trump?

That’s the question on many minds and one that will have analysts and prognosticators pondering for many years to come. As I see it, the answer is actually quite simple.

Dr. Gad Saad, Ph.D., wrote in September 2012 an article posted on PsychologyToday.com titled: “How Do People Choose Their Political Leaders.” In this article, Dr. Saad writes, “People are driven by peripheral cues that are largely irrelevant to actual matters of policy.”

It’s a well-known fact that when it came to policy, Donald Trump was clueless.

While he made many statements on how he would “make America great again,” he submitted very few facts on exactly how

he would make it happen.

Oh, sure, he said he would “renegotiate our trade deals,” “build a wall,” “deport undocumented workers,” “repeal Obamacare,” etc. (None of which will ever actually happen.) But he never really laid out a plan on how he was going to do any of it. So Americans could not have based their vote on matters of policy, like Dr. Saad suggests!

So that leaves us with “peripheral cues.”

Could this mean that Trumps supporters were inspired by his racist remarks; do we really have that many white supremacists in this country?

Or perhaps they were drawn to his sexist approach toward woman or the way he bullied opponents? Were his supporters turned on by him mocking a disabled journalist or did his supporters vote for him because of the way he insulted the parents of a fallen American soldier who happen to be Muslim? I could go on …

If Dr. Saad’s suggestion is even remotely accurate, then was Donald Trump elected president of the United States because of these peripheral cues? I’m embarrassed for our country. God help us.

Be safe this holiday season Thursday is Thanksgiving, an annual holiday when families come together to enjoy each other’s company and a good meal, and to give thanks for all of our blessings.

To be together on this special day, many individuals and families must travel, some long distances.

According to Illinois State Police, today, the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, marks the beginning of the busy holiday travel period. Area roadways and interstates will be especially crowded these next few days as motorists make their way to and from Thanksgiving celebrations.

AAA estimates that 48.7 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more this holiday weekend. Most of those travelers, almost 90 percent, will drive to their destinations, according to AAA. Of course, we want everyone to be able to enjoy this holiday season safely. That means following the rules of the road, including obeying speed limits; fastening your seat belts; turning your cellphones off while driving and eliminating other distractions; watching out for other drivers;

Lockport opens with win in Oster brothers clash

cherron@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – The Oster family has been such an integral part in the rise of Lockport to become one of the top wrestling programs in the state.

On Tuesday, the family got to experience another memorable moment as two of the five brothers who competed for the school faced off as head coaches for the first time and another one became the fourth in his family to serve as an assistant with the Porters.

And as a bonus, both Josh’s Lockport squad, and Jake’s Yorkville team turned in good showings in their season debuts in a nonconference dual meet in Lockport that also was the debut of their brother Jameson as a Porters assistant coach.

The Porters, ranked high nationally with almost all of last year’s thirdplace squad in Class 3A back, had a few of their returning starters not on the mat but still wound up collecting a 44-19 victory over the Foxes, who countered with a very young squad.

“I’m happy for Jake and know that he’ll do a really good job there,” Josh Oster said. “It’s kind of weird since we’ve gone from being on the same team, to me coaching him, to me coaching with him and then coaching against each other before but doing it now as head coaches. And Jamie is a really good coach and I’m glad that we got him this year. He’s helping out a lot with those middleweight kids.

“I was happy with how we wrestled today. There’s always going to be some technical stuff to improve on, especial-

ly early in the year. But the guys went out and the intangible things were good. We have some kids who we’re waiting on to get down to weight or to get healthy. But like we do all year, different people wrestle varsity at different times, so they’re ready to go.”

The Oster brothers all rank among the top 13 wins in school history. Jake ranks eighth and Josh is 13th, although he was the wins leader at the end of his career. Shayne, who graduated last

Jake, who coached with Josh for two seasons at his alma mater, won a state title in 2004, becoming the Porters’ first champion in 32 years. Later on, Jameson and Shayne also won state titles, making the family one of the few in history to have three brothers as champions.

“Lockport has a good team and we started the year off with our hardest competition that we’re going to see all year,” Jake Oster said.

“We saw some good things and some things that we’re going to have to work on.

“But overall, it was good coming back. I don’t think that I was here for a dual meet since I coached here five years ago. It was nice coming back and getting to compete against my brother and his team. They’ll be tough to handle for anyone in the state.”

As a bonus, hall of fame Porters coach Joe Williams, who was the head coach for both Josh and Jake, was honored during the meet by being inducted into the school’s hall of fame.

of Abdullah Assaf, Baylor Fernandes, Trevell Timmons and Ronald Tucker Jr., the Porters still demonstrated why they have a great opportunity to get to state for a fourth time in the last six years and also winning a state trophy for the straight third year.

Starting at 106, Lockport got pins from Matt Ramos (106), Anthony Molton (113), Brandon Ramos (138), Malik Daghash (160) and Payton Fernandes (182), major decisions from Garrett Golob (126) and Zach Reese (152) and decisions from Sal Farbo (120) and Yousif Salah (195) while Brendan Ramsey (132), Nick Dado (170) and Dan Stojsavljevic (220) all lost narrow decisions.

“It’s going to be a really good year and we’re going to try really hard to be the best in the state,” senior Farbo said. “We have people who can fill spots so even if someone is out, there’s going to be someone out there who’s trying to get the win.

“It really helps having so many other people around you who want to work hard and the work ethic in our room is good. We’re all like best friends and always do everything together. Almost everyone has been here for a while, so we’re all pretty much connected.”

Joliet West had opportunities in the fourth quarter but could not hit the shot when needed. The Tigers stuck around all quarter, briefly taking a

58-57 lead on a 3-pointer by all-tournament selection Sarah Gersch, who led her team with 19 points.

“We played well,” Joliet West coach John Placher said. “Lincoln-Way West shot the ball really well, especially in the first and second quarter.

“When we got down by nine early in the third quarter, during the timeout, I told them this is gut-check time and good teams don’t quit. They didn’t and they fought back all the way. I’m so proud of these kids and how far this program has come. We have this program where it needs to be, but we must continue to move forward.

“Raven [Reed] can be so dominant inside and she proved that tonight when they tried to play man-to-man defense. We need to work on getting her the ball more. Sarah [Gersch] did a tremendous job and so did Nicole Gal on the inside, especially in the second quarter.”

NEW LENOX – Before the start of the championship game of the Lincoln-Way Central/West Girls Thanksgiving Tournament on Tuesday night, everyone in the gym knew West would win.

The only question was which West, Joliet or Lincoln-Way. Both teams entered the game undefeated, but in the end, Lincoln-Way West (5-0) prevailed, 64-61, over the Tigers (3-1).

Leading 52-51 entering the fourth quarter, the Warriors made only two field goals the entire quarter, but made just enough free throws, going 8 of 17 in the last two minutes to hang on. On the night, they were 16 of 26 from the line.

“For as good as we shoot the ball, you would think we could make some

free throws,” Lincoln-Way West coach Ryan White said. “Tonight we shot the ball from the outside well and that opened up our inside game. When we do that we have great balance. Courtney [O’Donnell] really stepped up when we needed her tonight.”

O’Donnell, the veteran senior, led both teams with 24 points. She scored eight in the first quarter and added 16 more in the crucial second half.

“It’s always tough inside when you play against the Joliet West girls,” O’Donnell said. “I used my quickness today and occasionally moved outside, and when I hit a few of those jumpers, it really helped open up more opportunities inside.”

O’Donnell, along with freshman Taylor Gugliuzza, was named to the all-tournament team.

The countdown to the court appearance

It has been only a few days – last Saturday, to be exact – since the Plainfield North football team celebrated an 18-17 overtime victory over Fenwick in the Class 7A semifinal game at Triton College in River Grove.

Somehow, it feels like an eternity.

The controversial ending has caused a stir statewide, and everyone seemingly has an opinion about what should or should not happen.

North, you will recall, tied the game on Connor Peplow’s field goal on an untimed down the IHSA later said should not have been awarded.

The IHSA also said, however, that the decision of the game officials is final, and North will face East St. Louis in the 7A championship game at 4 p.m.

Fenwick did not agree, and it filed a complaint and restraining order Monday in Cook County court against the IHSA. Hopefully, the situation will be resolved in the court appearance that is scheduled for 9:30 a.m.

VIEWS Dick Goss In response to the Wednesday hearing, IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson issued this statement Tuesday afternoon: “We are disappointed whenever we are forced to defend the Association’s by-laws, which have been voted into existence by IHSA member schools, in the court system, especially when that challenge comes from a member high school. However, given the circumstances surrounding this contest, we understood that it was a possible outcome.

“We are mindful that in addition to the impact this issue has on Fenwick High School, Plainfield North High School and East St. Louis High School, it also has the potential to overshadow the accomplishments of the other 14 teams who will play for state championships this weekend in Champaign. Given that, we will refrain from further comment until

after Wednesday’s proceedings.”

You probably have heard the opinion expressed in other media outlets, on social media or on talk radio that Plainfield North coach Tim Kane should do the right thing – call his players together and explain to them that Fenwick rightfully won the game, so the Tigers will not be going to Champaign.

What bothers me is that suggests Kane is some sort of villain in all of this. He is anything but that. His team abided by the rules as they were enforced that day. The Tigers played their hearts out until they won the game on Dillon McCarthy’s two-point conversion run in overtime.

The officials are entrusted with determining the rules that apply in each situation and how they should be interpreted. Mistaken or not, once they do that, the game continues until they say it is over.

Are there coaches out there who would do what some on the outside looking in are saying Kane should do?

Maybe, but I can’t imagine there are many.

You can’t help but feel sorry for

Fenwick – and East St. Louis – as well. But if the situation were reversed, and if Plainfield North were taking the IHSA to court, I would not change my opinion. Fenwick in that case would be the rightful semifinal winner.

I mentioned in a column over the weekend that if the North-Fenwick game had been the state championship game with the entire state watching, rather than a semifinal, it would be one of those games that would be discussed for a hundred years.

That needs amending. What happened last Saturday, what will happen in court Wednesday morning and what will happen in the 4 p.m.

Saturday time slot at Champaign will be etched into permanent memory.

The only thing I feel certain about right now is that whatever happens, our old friend Dave Bernhard will present a professional analysis of the situation when he sits down Saturday afternoon to call the Class 7A championship game on the IHSA network.

From Providence’s perspective, Trendel emphasized that the season for the Celtics is a progression toward playing their best basketball in March.

“Our kids have a track record,” he said. “They have been to five regional finals in the last six years and won three of them. That’s a credit to their work ethic.”

Three of the seniors on the Celtics’ roster – guard Jake Schutter and forwards Martez Malone and Michael Drew – provide a bulk of the experience for what is a young team.

But I threw a lot at these guys, even some things we didn’t practice yet. At that, we have some smart guys like Scott Slocum and Matthew DiNardi. They were able to do some things well that we hadn’t practiced.”

Trendel answered “our organization” when asked what will look better Wednesday.

“When we’re switching between man and zone, that will get better,” he said. “I think we’ll shoot it better, too.”

The Celtics shot 31.7 percent on 13 of 41. Schutter, an All-Chicago Catholic League selection as a junior, led the way with 16 points and four assists, plus he contributed six steals.

The only negative on his stats sheet was five turnovers.

“Jake just has to learn that the weight of the world is not on his shoulders,” Trendel said. “But it’s

natural to feel like that when you’re the returning alpha dog.”

Trendel said he has two sophomores and five or six juniors in the rotation. One of the sophomores, long-range shooter Adam Taylor, hit three 3-pointers and scored nine points.

JOLIET – Joliet Central had slipped past Romeoville, 73-66, in double overtime in the WJOL Thanksgiving Classic opening-night game that was played at Joliet Junior College.

Facing off in the last of three games contested Monday night at the University of St. Francis Sullivan Center, Lemont and Providence decided to add a second game to the overtime list. This time, however, only one extra session was necessary as Lemont prevailed, 43-39.

“I’m not sure how pretty it was, but it was competitively played,” Lemont coach Rick Runaas said. “We were fortunate that we executed at the end.”

“The first night – some good and some bad,” Providence coach Tim Trendel said.

In the absence of standout point guard P.J. Pipes, who has signed with Wisconsin-Green Bay, Lemont relied on 6-foot-8 junior center Paul O’Leary, and he delivered. He hit 7 of 10 shots and 7 of 8 free throws for 21 points to go with six rebounds.

“He’s big, he knows it and he is willing to be big,” Runaas said of O’Leary. “He is satisfied being big.”

“He’s tough in there,” Trendel agreed. “The true big man is a dying art. He’ll be tough for anybody he goes against.”

Before the tournament, Runaas indicated “issues” had arisen with Pipes, and the likelihood was he would not play this week. On Monday night, Runaas did not elaborate further on why Pipes is being relegated to cheerleading for his teammates from the bench, but did say, “We hope to have him back soon.”

Lemont’s offense began to struggle in the second quarter when O’Leary went to the bench with two fouls. The Indians led, 15-12, at halftime and trailed, 24-21, after three quarters.

“In the second quarter, our guys said, ‘Paul’s gone, now who do we go to?’ ” Runaas said. “Regardless of whether we’re working through Paul or not at a given time, however, we’re going to have to make some shots.”

Runaas said his team received positive contributions from senior forward Nate Padgorak, who grabbed seven rebounds, and senior guard Marty Stanys.

“Nate came up with some loose balls and rebounds,” he said. “And there was a time we worked the ball around for 30, 35, 40 seconds and then he saw Paul and hit him with a pass.

The Associated Press SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Brian Kelly’s worst season at Notre Dame took an embarrassing turn Tuesday as the NCAA announced that academic misconduct orchestrated by a student athletic trainer will cost the storied program all 21 victories from the 201213 seasons, including the 12-0 run that vaulted the Fighting Irish into the national championship game against Alabama.

It marked just the fourth time the NCAA has cited Notre Dame for a major rules violation. The vacated games include Notre Dame’s 12 victories in 2012, their best regular season since winning their last national championship in 1988. The season finished with an embarrassing 42-14 loss to the Crimson Tide in the title game and the revelation that linebacker Manti Te’o had been the victim of a fake girlfriend hoax.

The school ripped the NCAA for its decision to vacate the wins and immediately said it would appeal. The Rev.

John Jenkins, the university president, said the NCAA has never before vacated records in such a case.

“We believe that imposition of the vacation of records penalty without serious underlying institutional misconduct will not primarily punish those responsible for the misconduct, but rather will punish coaches, student-athletes and indeed the entire institution who did nothing wrong and, with regard to this case, did everything right,” Jenkins said. He noted the NCAA has since voted to change the rule that brought this case under NCAA jurisdiction rather than leaving such decisions to individual schools.

The Division I Committee on Infractions panel also put Notre Dame on probation for a year and ordered a $5,000 fine, penalties the school agreed with. There were no bowl or scholarship punishments.

In all, the NCAA said, three athletes wound up playing while ineligible, one during the 2012 season and the other two the following season, when the Irish went 9-4.

NEW YORK – Matt Farrell’s threepoint play with 14 seconds to play gave Notre Dame the lead and his two free throws 11 seconds later sealed the Fighting Irish’s 70-66 victory over Northwestern on Tuesday night in the championship game of the Legends Classic at Barclays Center.

Northwestern had a 66-65 lead with 39 seconds to play on a drive by Bryant McIntosh. Notre Dame’s Steve Vasturia missed a jumper but Northwestern threw the ball away on an inbounds pass, setting the stage for Farrell.

He drove the lane and was knocked to the court as the ball went in. He sat on the court, looked at the photographers and stuck his tongue out before being mobbed by his teammates. The Wildcats still had a chance but McIntosh missed a drive with 4 seconds left and it was Farrell who grabbed the rebound and was fouled.

Farrell, the tournament MVP, and Vasturia both had 18 points for the Fighting Irish (5-0) while Bonzie Col-

son had 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Big picture: Notre Dame: The Fighting Irish have plenty of experience back from last season’s Elite Eight team and they will need that as they approach the Atlantic Coast Conference season.

Northwestern: Nothing can compare to a Wildcats run at a possible NCAA Tournament bid that would be their first ever.

Arrowhead Ales in New Lenox much more than the beer MYSTERY DINER

There seems to be craft breweries popping up all over, but each one certainly gives you a different experience.

So I arrived in New Lenox with an open mind and headed into Arrowhead Ales Brewing Company.

For starters, you hope the beer is good. Then, you hope for good food.

The interior feels like a mix between a sports bar, restaurant and a beer hall. There’s a long bar, a beer hall-style table and also family-style seating options.

The next step was choosing the right food. I was pleasantly surprised by the options and tempted to try the avocado rolls. I know the patron next to me having the buffalo wings seemed happy.

Instead, I decided I was headed for a full meal. After mulling the lobster bake, I instead chose the IPA chicken with a cup of cheddar potato beer soup.

I mean, it’s a brewing company with the motto “Beer over everything” on its website, so why not go after a beer-themed meal as well.

The next challenge was selecting the right beer to go with it.

The good part was, of the 11 options on the wall, there were plenty of unique ones. There was everything from a sweet potato beer (Jive Turkey) to an Imperial Oatmeal Breakfast Stout (Devils Breakfast) to a cream ale (Don’t Worry, Beer Happy).

Instead, I started with the Chocolate Coffin Creeper, a chocolate milk stout that says plenty of vampire cereal was used in the brewing process. And it tasted like it.

Maybe it wasn’t the perfect beer to go with my cheddar potato beer soup, but that’s on me as I’m not real advanced on food pairings. Separately, each was delicious.

The soup was fulfilling and the combination of potatoes, beer, bacon, cheese and scallions was done just right to ensure a hearty enough soup that wasn’t just filled with chunks.

It gave me enough time to finish, enjoy my coffin creeper and move on to the main course.

As for the IPA-marinated chicken, it was exactly what I was hoping for.

And this time I chose right, enjoying it with Arrowhead Ales’ FMLR Triple IPA, which is mildly sweet with a 68 IBU in the International Bitterness scale.

Arrowhead serves everything from IPA Chicken and Waffles to IPA Fish and Chips to sandwiches or build your own brew burger with any patty, bun, cheese and extras combination you desire.

They also have a late-night menu after 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

Needless to say, you won’t go

home hungry as you enjoy your original brews.

30 Healthy behaviors improve odds for longer life Note to readers: This column originally ran in November 2014.

Dear Dr. K: Eat right. Don’t smoke. Stay

active. Can you give me some motivation to keep up these healthy behaviors?

Dear Reader: I think I get your message.

This column frequently presents information from scientific studies about healthy lifestyle.

But information alone might not be enough to change behavior – and it’s hard to change behavior, particularly when you enjoy it. Information doesn’t equal motivation.

I’m not an expert on how to motivate people, but here’s how I motivate myself.

I ask myself what I want from life. In terms of health, I want to live as long as possible, free of suffering and with my faculties intact. Then I’ll be able to love and be loved, and to enjoy the things I most enjoy, for as long as possible.

So the next question is: How do I get there? And I don’t mean how do I guarantee I’ll live a long life, free of suffering and decrepitude. Because there are no guarantees in life, only odds. You want to know what the odds are you’ll achieve your goals, and what you can do to improve your odds. At least that’s what I want to know.

How do I find out what my odds are, and how to improve them? I believe in science. I don’t believe any single scientific study is infallible, no matter how impressive it seems. But I believe the collective information from many well-done studies is the best, and maybe the only, way I’ll ever learn what I need to know.

For example, in a recently published study, a research team followed nearly 17,000 men and women, aged 17 years and older, for 18 years. They meticulously

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff collected information on the lifestyle, the illnesses, and the life or death of the study participants. In other words, they studied more than 300,000 years of human experience.

They compared study participants who ate a healthy diet, got enough physical activity, drank alcohol in moderation and never smoked to those who engaged in none of these healthy behaviors. The first group lived an average of 11 years longer.

It’s just the latest study that says the lifestyle we call “healthy” really is good for our health.

There’s more good news. The same healthy lifestyle practices that cause you to live longer make those extra years healthier. Healthy lifestyle does not just prolong your decrepitude.

Even more good news: You don’t have to banish all unhealthy practices from your life, always and forever. What matters is your usual behavior. Take me, for example. Does Doctor K always follow the healthy lifestyle advice he gives in this column? Some questions answer themselves.

Information motivates me – and so does emotion. If family and friends encourage me along the path I’ve chosen, and if I don’t want to disappoint them, I’m more likely to follow that path.

I hope this advice will help you find the motivation you need to stay healthy.

I am a 9-yearold girl in third grade. I have problems making friends.

Girls my age and older don’t like me much.

Boys my age and older seem to be fine.

It’s important I get help in making girl friends. I have three hopeless brothers I really don’t like.

My mom said I should tell you what I do like – math, science, dolls and TV. I have crazy hair.

Did you have this problem when you were my age? I think people think I’m weird. – Young Reader In Kokomo, Indiana Dear Young Reader: Your mother is a smart woman. She knows how important common interests can be in forming relationships. Because you like math, science, dolls and TV, gravitate toward girls who like them, too. If you do, you may find some of them are receptive.

Remember – all you really need is one friend you can confide in.

As to the rest of your question, at your age I wasn’t part of the popular crowd. I was shy and terrible at sports, so I spent many hours alone in my room reading books.

They kept me company and widened my horizons beyond my immediate neighborhood. People at my grammar school probably thought I was weird, too, but many people who become successful as adults start out that way.

You and I have something else in common. I was self-conscious about my hair, too. It was curly and hard to handle because I hadn’t yet learned to style it. But as I grew older, I learned to manage it – as I’m sure you will.

And when I reached my mid-teens I found it easier to make female friends. A valuable lesson I learned was to be a friend when someone needs one, and to practice character traits I admired in others, such as kindness and honesty.

One aspect of bridge that separates the top players from others is taking full advantage of the useful spot cards (2 through 10) -- in particular, knowing when a low spot is a winner.

How is that relevant in today’s deal? After West leads the club king, how should South proceed in four spades? Did West have a more successful opening lead?

South’s jump to four spades was a slight overbid with a six-loser hand, but we tend to bid game with any excuse. Of course, here, if South had chosen to rebid three no-trump, North would surely have passed, and declarer would have had nine top tricks. (Also, there was a case for West’s making a takeout double over one spade, not a two-club overcall. It would not have made much difference here, but the double would have been more flexible.)

In four spades, though, South has only those same nine tricks; he is faced with four losers: two hearts, one diamond and one club. Is there any hope?

Look at those interesting club spots. Declarer should win the first trick, draw trumps and return the club nine. Suppose West finds the best defense, taking the trick and shifting to the heart queen. South wins on the board, leads the club 10 and discards a heart loser. Yes, West takes that trick and cashes a heart winner, but South’s diamond loser evaporates on the now-high club eight.

If West had led anything other than a club, the contract would have failed.

9. A cost of services per housing unit for Inspection, Assessment, which includes all samples, lab fees, and any other associated costs.

10. A schedule outlining the timeframe from initial contact to scheduling the inspection, conducting the inspection, through an asbestos assessment report being received by Will County.

11. Proof of insurances (General Liability and Workers Compensation).

12. References from previous clients within the past five years.

Method of Selection: Proposals will be reviewed by an evaluation team for the purpose of identifying and recommending those individuals offering, in total, the overall cost for services, expedient service delivery, the highest qualifications, and experience with these types of projects. The individuals or firms recommended may also be interviewed by members of the evaluation team for the express intention of recommending a final individual or firm to perform this work for Will County.

Attention of bidders is particularly called to the requirements as to conditions of employment to be observed and minimum wage rates to be paid under the contract, Section 3, Segregated Facility, Section 109 and E.O. 11246. MBE/WBE: Women and Minority Owned Businesses are encouraged to submit proposal.
