VILLAGES OPEN FOR NEW & EXPANDING BUSINESS Mayors share prospects for economic development By Chris Walker
T
he Village of Plainfield is in the process of updating its comprehensive plan so it can tell the world that it’s open for new business.
“We’re reviewing the comprehensive plan which was done over 12 years ago,” said Plainfield Mayor John Argoudelis. “We’re making adjustments on proposed land use so we can be on top of the landscape. For example, industrial development is something that‘s hot, and we’re making adjustments on how it should occur in Plainfield, housing types and things. Since I got in office, we’ve been working on updating what we’re telling the world.” Argoudelis said he hopes Plainfield is received by the marketplace as a welcoming destination when economic opportunities come its way. The
comprehensive plan should be ready to share this fall, the mayor noted. “There’s a great demand to be in Plainfield,” Argoudelis said. “We have a lot going for us, and a lot of those factors can be the difference between a realtor or developer going to the next town over. We’re close to I-55, our infrastructure and transportation are good, and we’ve got Lake Michigan water, which is a big deal.” Global beverage producer Diageo announced earlier this year that it was installing two can lines at its long-standing Plainfield plant, an investment of almost $80 million. It will have the capacity to produce over 25 million cases of ready-todrink Smirnoff seltzers and spirits-based cocktails from Crown Royal and Ketel One Botanicals annually. Recent economic growth in Plainfield includes the addition of 250 new homes last year, more than 500 new apartments this year and a variety of commercial developments, including Costco and Rod Baker Ford.
