bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The city is looking for a new banquet operator at Union Station.

Jeffrey Bussean, whose Bussean Custom Caterers has operated the Grand Ballroom in the old train station since 2001, plans to move out in January, city officials said.

The City Council Economic Development Committee will review criteria at 5 p.m. Thursday before putting out a request for qualifications from potential operators of the facility.

Bussean’s decision to leave Union Station comes after he had pushed for a 10-year lease nearly a year ago. No lease agreement ever was reached.

According to city officials, Bussean has become busy with his other operations and has notified the city that he needs to scale back.

“He wanted to give us notice because people are planning weddings months and months in advance,” Joliet Economic Development Director Steve Jones said.

Bussean did not return phone calls seeking comment.

Bussean Custom Caterers also owns the Patrick Haley Mansion in Joliet.

Jones said Bussean will continue operating the Patrick Haley Mansion. But he is developing another facility in Wayne while also operating Chateau Busche in Alsip, Jones said.

“He gave us the impression that of all the sites he’s got, this is the one he can scale back on,” Jones said.

came an issue in early 2015, when the banquet facility’s lease had run out although it continued to operate.

At that time, Councilman Jim McFarland suggested seeking proposals from other banquet operators before renewing the lease with Bussean. The council held a special meeting at Union Station, where Bussean led a tour to show his plans for the facility while seeking a 10-year lease to recoup the cost of investments. The council agreed to stay with Bussean, but a new lease never was created.

Jones said the city will look regionally for a new banquet operator.

“We’ll be looking at hospitality firms throughout the whole Chicago area because this is such a unique niche,” he said.

Union Station is a limestone structure built in 1912 and restored in the 1990s by the city. Joliet has attracted a future brew pub operator who hopes to open up in Union Station later this year.

Councilman Larry Hug, chairman of the Economic Development Committee, said the brew pub would be an added attraction for a potential banquet operator, and he expects the availability of Union Station to attract interest.

“I would be surprised if we have less than three qualified proposals,” Hug said.

He said the city will look for “someone with a proven track record not only in catering but also in managing a facility.”

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Video from the night Councilman Larry Hug was struck at a local bar shows him taking at least two blows with an open hand.

Police late Wednesday afternoon released the video, the 911 call and a heavily redacted police report from the March 31 incident.

Joliet real estate broker Mark Koenig was arrested Friday for misdemeanor battery in the incident, authorities said.

The video, which is more than an hour long and does not include sound, shows Hug and Koenig engaged in animated conversations at least twice in the smoking area at the Double J Sports Bar. At times they are laughing, shaking hands and giving high fives to each other. At other times, they are pointing at each other while two other

people at their table appear to be trying to calm them down.

The two other people are Will County Board member Annette Parker and her husband, Brian Parker, a county employee. Their presence has caused the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office to send the battery charge to a special prosecutor for review to avoid a conflict of interest.

Annette Parker also is director of sales and marketing of the Rialto Square Theatre.

Hug at times has criticized Rialto management at council meetings and urged cuts in funding provided by the city.

Hug said last week that the Rialto was the main topic of discussion while he was at the bar, although he did not provide details.

The Parkers appear to be bystanders and even peacemakers during the most animated parts of the discussion.

to the point when Hug is hit, a fifth, unidentified man is seen on the video engaging in conversation as well. Once he left, about 11:37 p.m., Hug and Koenig began talking again and a minute later, Hug was struck.

Community invited to learn more about lab technology

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A new lab at Joliet Junior College houses technology that can create almost anything people can imagine.

Student Eric Wilhelmi was in the new JJC MakerLab on Wednesday and held up a small house in his hand that was designed and created with the digital fabrication equipment in the lab.

“It literally jumps from your mind to your hand,” said Wilhelmi, who uses the lab to work on architecture projects.

Sitting on one the tables in the lab were other objects that have been created, such as a finely detailed dinosaur skull and the Eiffel Tower. Those objects and more can be made at the JJC MakerLab, which has been at the college since January.

The lab has 3-D printers, scanners, a carving machine, a laser cutter and other equipment that students studying architecture, engineering or orthotics and prosthetics technology can use to hone their skills.

There also are plans to have the community visit the lab and learn how to use the technology as well.

“Getting people involved and taking away that ‘I can’t do it’ attitude is kind of something I want to push with the lab,” said Steven Mark, MakerLab technician and JJC graduate.

Mark said the MakerLab is a space where JJC students and the community can create anything. He said it is exciting to see JJC move in a direction where everyone can use technology that is becoming more common.

“It’s really exciting that everybody is starting to use the technology, and it’s kind of widespread now,” he said.

JJC held an open house for the MakerLab in March to demonstrate its capabilities. U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, D-Naperville, attended the event.

He previously brought a portable lab known as the Fab Lab to JJC in 2013, according to the school. Children and adults use the lab to invent, design and manufacture prototypes.

Wilhelmi said the lab allows him to extend his own skills and create increasingly complex projects, especially when he is designing stairs.

“It enables me do a lot of bigger things,” he said.

Mark said the laser cutter can be a cool device when people figure out how to use it and make designs with it. He showed a business card holder made out of plywood, and the laser cutter put surface cuts into the material to make it more flexible.

“There’s so much you can do here, and you really are limited [only] by your imagination, especially when you learn how to use the tools,” he said.

Area students gather for science expo

Shaw Media correspondent CHANNAHON – Jessica Janicki and Brianna Gillson explained the successes and misses of their “lettuce grow food” science experiment to a crowd of parents.

The duo, along with their science club team from Minooka Intermediate School, attempted to use a mix of water and popular household solutions to grow lettuce.

“It was interesting to figure out which liquids would make the lettuce grow best. I thought it would be salt water, but sugar water and water were the best,” Gillson said.

On Wednesday at Channahon Junior High School, more than 160 sixththrough eighth-grade students from Minooka, Channahon, Troy and Rockdale schools took part in the seventh annual science expo, sponsored by ExxonMobil of Joliet. The students, all in an after-school science club, broke up into teams, came up with a project that involved the scientific method and had to present their creation to a room full of parents and teachers.

“This event was a lot of work, and I am proud of all of the students,” Minooka Intermediate science teacher Lauren Sowa said. “This was a great experience, and they learn to communicate what works and doesn’t work.

Science is all about learning.”

Tricia Simpson, Midwest public affairs manager at ExxonMobil, said this year’s theme was science of the future and stressed that the event always has created an environment in which students are free to succeed and fail,

which is a part of science. According to Simpson, there were 40 more students this year than last year.

“I think we are growing because teachers do a terrific job making science fun and interesting. Students also understand that it’s an opportunity to understand what a career in engineering, math or anything technically related can do for them,” Simpson said.

While the students talked to the hundreds of spectators, parents stood proud of their children’s accomplishments.

“My daughter loves this kind of stuff,” Brian Lowell of Minooka said of his daughter, Kayla Lowell, of Channahon Junior High. “She comes home and talks about the success and failures of her project. She had a good group of kids, and I know they had fun with the project.”

Failures were the main part of a team from Troy Middle School. Seventy-five percent of the way through their perpetual motion creation, the three students realized they never would finish and had to change gears. ”We only had three meetings left to build, and we had to talk to the teacher to switch our project. We learned to keep trying and zone in,” seventh-grade Troy Middle School student Aidan Brown said.

Although the students were excited and nervous to present to their parents and teachers, many said they learned a lot from the projects of their peers.

“This expo was very cool,” Troy Middle seventh-grader Patrick Olson said.

Joliet D-86 board OKs renewal for mobile class space

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Joliet Public School District 86 Board of Inspectors voted Wednesday to approve renewing a lease agreement for mobile classrooms at Carl Sandburg Elementary School.

The board had entered a one-year lease agreement with JMO Mobile Modular LLC last year for one mobile double classroom because of increased enrollment at Sandburg Elementary, which is behind Hufford Junior High School.

The mobile classroom space houses two fifth-grade classrooms, said Sandy

Zalewski, District 86 spokeswoman.

The agreement came with two option years, and the board Wednesday approved renewing the lease agreement for a second year at an annual rate of $14,000.

The vote on the option for the agreement – along with other items on the consent agenda – took place after the board went into closed session for nearly an hour and a half.

According to July 8, 2015, board minutes, E. Wesley Russell, assistant superintendent for business and financial services, told the board about the agreement with JMO Mobile Modular LLC and that he believed enrollment will level out at Sandburg.

Other business

The board also approved as part of the consent agenda the final 2015-16 school calendar, with the last day of school slated for May 27.

The board also approved acceptance of gifts, one each from a Cathedral Area Preservation Association volunteer at Farragut Elementary School who donated books and a retired teacher who gave $100 to Sator Sanchez Elementary to purchase student incentives to promote perfect attendance.

Bob Nachtrieb, the CAPA volunteer at Farragut, donated 23 Scholastic Reading books to each first-grade student he tutors in classrooms.

“Mr. Nachtrieb is a valuable and

highly effective volunteer at Farragut School, and the students adore him,” Farragut Principal Brenda Reiter-Gorman wrote in a message to the board.

Retired teacher Pamela Testin made donations to Sator Sanchez to help with attendance, and she also serves as a mentor in the Kids Hope program this year, wrote Lisa Marie Moreno, Sator Sanchez principal.

Board inspector Quinn Adamowski said Nachtrieb’s work at Farragut is an excellent example of coordination between neighborhood associations or community groups and schools.

“I just want to highlight that,” he said.

By SHAW MEDIA CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced Wednesday that daily lane closures will start April 25, weather permitting, for a routine bridge inspection on Interstate 80 over the Des Plaines River in Joliet.

In order to complete the inspection, temporary lane closures will take place on I-80 over the river, starting about 2 miles east of Larkin Avenue.

The closures will begin on westbound

I-80 and switch to eastbound I-80, keeping at least two lanes open to traffic, according to a news release from IDOT. The inspections are expected to be completed by May 7.

Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through the area. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment.

JOLIET – A fire Wednesday that began in the basement of a house at 1307 Prairie Ave. was extinguished as it started to spread upstairs, officials said.

The fire occurred about 10:30 a.m. in the one-story house, Joliet Fire Department Battalion Chief Jeff Carey said.

A woman who had been doing laun-

dry smelled smoke, went to the basement and discovered flames. The fire started in the laundry area, but the cause has not been determined, Carey said.

The fire was burning into the floor of a bedroom on the first floor when firefighters arrived and put it out, Carey said.

Damage was estimated at $30,000.

Firefighters were on the scene for an hour.

The HERALD–NEWS Three Joliet men have been charged in a vehicular shooting in Barrington.

At 3:09 a.m. Sunday, Barrington police were called to Route 14 and Shorely Drive in Barrington to investigate the shooting.

Sherron P. Reed Jr., 20, of the 200 block of Sheridan Street; Brandon D. Campbell, 21, of the 400 block of Irving Street; and Justin L. Crowder, 19, of the 1400 block of Eunice Avenue, are charged each with one count of aggravated battery with a firearm and one count of aggravated discharge of a firearm at an occupied vehicle, both of

which are Class X felonies.

According to a Barrington Police Department news release, the trio attended a party with the victims and was driving home on Route 14 when they fired several rounds from an AR-15 rifle into the victims’ car, which then left the road and crashed into a railroad gate.

Both victims sustained gunshot wounds, the news release stated. One is in critical condition, officials said, and the other has been released from a hospital.

The case remains under investigation. The three suspects were scheduled to appear Wednesday for a bond hearing in Lake County court.

New Grundy County assessor resigns abruptly

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – New Grundy County Assessor Doug Anderson, who started his four-year contract March 21, resigned less than a month after taking the supervisor of assessments position.

Anderson said his reason for leaving has nothing to do with the county, and instead concerns a personal issue related to an anonymous letter sent to county officials.

“There were some comments sent to the County Board that I feel would hurt my credibility going forward,” Anderson said. “It’s a wonderful county, and I enjoyed my time there.”

Anderson filled the position seven months after Stephanie Kennedy resigned in August.

“I am very disappointed that Mr. Anderson made the decision not to continue as the supervisor of assessments in Grundy County,” Grundy County Board Chairman David Welter said in a news release. “We will begin working immediately to fill this position as soon as possible.”

The District 86 Board of Inspectors approved the field trip’s costs at its Feb. 10 meeting.

The anticipated cost of the trip is about $1,300 a person, and all funds will be handled between educational travel provider Worldstrides – which helped make the trip a reality for Hufford students – and families.

Shorewood board approves public works purchases; mayor honors volleyball team

Shorewood Mayor Rick Chapman and the village trustees congratulate the Minooka Junior High School girls volleyball team on its state title during the village board meeting Tuesday.

Shaw Media Correspondent SHOREWOOD – The village of Shorewood board voted unanimously at its meeting Tuesday to spend $177,219.12 on new vehicle equipment for the public works department.

Public Works Supervisor Chris Drey asked the trustees to consider three separate purchases for the department.

The biggest expense was a 2016 Ford F-550 1-ton snowplow to be purchased locally from Ron Tirapelli Ford for $86,277.90. It will replace the 2002 snowplow sent to auction last summer.

“We will buy the chassis from Ron Tirapelli, and then it will be sent to Bonnell [Industries Inc.] in Dixon for the bed, snowplow and hydraulic equipment, but all of it will be taken care of through Tirapelli Ford,” Drey said.

Another replacement vehicle will be a 2016 Ford F-250 pickup, also to be purchased through Ron Tirapelli Ford, for $30,601.22.

“This will replace an older vehicle in the fleet. The utility supervisor will receive this truck, and the other vehicle will go to the street department for daily use, which will cover an older vehicle we sold at auction,” Drey said.

“This is a tree removal machine, which will be quicker than other vehicles we use for tree removal and about $20,000 cheaper,” Drey said.

Trustee Anthony Luciano questioned whether the village had a need for the equipment and whether it would require hiring more personnel. Drey said he has teams out three to four days a week for tree removal and maintenance, so the need was there, and the same personnel the village currently uses will be on the truck.

Public works also received approval to buy mosquito tablets for $12,738 to treat the basins and inlets in the village for six months to keep mosquito breeding areas in check during the warm months ahead.

“We are grateful to the staff in the assessor’s office for all of the hard work they have put in to help the county through our recent vacancy in the supervisor of assessments position,” Grundy County Tax Committee Chairman John Roth said in the news release.

The board approved a new homebased day care business in Shorewood. Elizabeth Williams of 818 N. Edgewater Lane approached the board at a Committee of the Whole meeting about her business. After the board heard that Williams had obtained her Department of Children and Family Services license, the business was approved.

Mayor Rick Chapman asked the Minooka Junior High School eighthgrade girls volleyball team to attend the meeting to be recognized for their state title. He read a written resolution to the team and offered a village seal-stamped copy for each girl to keep.

“I would like to express my sincere congratulations,” Chapman said.

An interim supervisor of assessments will be appointed by the Tax Committee, and the appointee can serve in that role for up to 60 days. The vacancy will be posted immediately and will be available for viewing on the Grundy County website at www. grundyco.org.

In the 911 call, Hug tells a dispatcher he was punched in the nose and wants the person who hit him arrested.

“My name is Larry Hug,” he tells the dispatcher as she takes the call. “I just got punched in the face by a patron at Double J’s. I want a police officer over here.”

Hug’s voice is calm during the call, and he does not identify himself as a councilman.

He answers a series of questions from the dispatcher, who asks what happened.

“It was a verbal disagreement, and then he (unintelligible) punched me in the nose,” Hug replies.

The dispatcher asked Hug whether he needed an ambulance.

“No, I’m good,” he said.

When the dispatcher asked Hug again later about his condition, he said he is fine and adds he wants the man arrested.

Hug declined Wednesday night to comment on any of the new information released by law enforcement. Koenig did not immediately return a message left Wednesday evening.

The report released by police is so redacted that it tells almost nothing of what happened. The only person named in the report is Koenig.

The name of the victim is blacked out. But the report lists the victim as a councilman employed by the city of Joliet. The report lists two witnesses, who are not identified.

Outside groups join in on growing GOP delegate game

WASHINGTON – After burning through millions of dollars in a mostly failed attempt to sway Republican primary voters, big-money outside groups opposing Donald Trump have turned to a far smaller target audience: the delegates who will actually choose the presidential nominee.

Our Principles, which is devoted to keeping Trump from winning, and super PACs backing Ted Cruz and John Kasich are spending their time and money researching the complex process of delegate selection and reaching out to those party insiders. Compared to earlier primary states such as Florida, there have been few ads by outside groups on the air in New York, which holds its election Tuesday.

Delegates are the people – typically longtime Republicans and state party activists – who will have their say at the GOP convention this summer in Cleveland if Trump does not lock up the nomination first in the remaining voting contests.

The hot pursuit of such low-profile people by outside groups is yet another unprecedented twist in a history-defying presidential primary season.

The delegate focus comes after the groups’ earlier efforts turned out to be money not particularly well spent. GOP-aligned groups spent at least $218 million on presidential television and radio ads, according to advertising tracker Kantar Media’s CMAG. In one example, last

“At this stage, the delegate fight is the most important part of the race,” said Tim Miller, a spokesman for Our Principles. “The work we’re doing on it is how we get the biggest bang for our buck.”

Our Principles isn’t airing commercials at all in New York. On Wednesday, super PACs helping Cruz and Kasich bought $700,000 in paid media there to run through Election Day, CMAG shows.

On the delegate front, the Trump, Cruz and Kasich campaigns all pay specialists to advise them. Yet the outside groups can’t resist crafting a role for themselves. By law, candidates cannot direct their helpful super PACs on how to spend money on paid communications.

However, candidates and the outside groups keep a close eye on what the others are doing.

At a donor event last weekend at the Venetian casino resort in Las Vegas, pro-Cruz super PAC officials explained to a rapt audience how they are diving into data about Republican delegates. That super PAC event took place on the same floor as a Cruz campaign finance event, which delved into similar material.

Douglas Heye, a former communications director for the Republican National Convention, said the organizational nature of a potential delegate fight plays into Cruz’s strengths.

The Texas senator has cultivated relationships with conservative leaders across the country.

Now they’re helping him woo delegates.

Clinton’s abortion remarks miss point Hillary Clinton had a remarkable moment recently on “Meet the Press,” as she was talking about abortion. She was responding to Donald Trump’s missteps on that issue, and was full of unanticipated surprises herself.

The chief surprise being that she referred to an “unborn person.” That term is not typically used by people who support legal abortion. Dehumanizing language is key to supporters of the abortion industry.

The language she used, did, in fact, set off something of a firestorm among her usual allies. As the New York Times put it in a headline: “Hillary Clinton Roundly Criticized for Referring to the Unborn as a ‘Person.’ ” But the more interesting – or jarring – thing to me, although largely unnoticed, was that she used the word “mandate.” She delivered her usual pro-choice arguments, more or less the campaign boilerplate. But then she said: “My view has always been [that abortion] is a choice. It is not a mandate.”

She went on to say: “I have seen what happens when governments make these decisions, whether it was forced sterilization, forced abortion in China or forced childbearing in communist Romania. So I don’t think that we should be allowing the government to make decisions that really properly belong to the individual.”

I suppose that comes close to a condemnation of China’s brutal one-child policy. But that “mandate” word was timely in unintentional ways. Through its health care system, our government is forcing groups such as the Little Sisters of the Poor to, in some ways, support things like abortion that their consciences dictate as evil. And the government does so in a culture that dictates these things as mainstream and even expected.

The retired Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor wrote in Planned Parenthood v. Casey that women had “organized intimate relationships and made choices that define their views of themselves and their places in society, in reliance on the availability of abortion in the event that contraception should fail.”

George Mason University Law School professor Helen Alvare cited this in congressional testimony a few years ago, pointing to “evidence from a growing body of sociological as well as law and economics literature that more easily available abortion is associated

As Alvare put it: “According to leading scholars, it certainly appears that more easily available abortion has led to expectations of more uncommitted sexual encounters – and thereby to more sexually transmitted infections, more nonmarital pregnancies and births and more abortions.” She added: “Women of color, poor women, and recent immigrants are suffering these consequences in disproportionate numbers.”

If Clinton wasn’t directly grappling with this, it does seem to be on her mind. She may be struggling to voice her conscience without frustrating her base, which includes the abortion industry. She may want to be honest about women’s health and what real freedom is. There’s a better way to protect human rights and women’s dignity.

When Clinton hit on the word “mandate,” she should have opened a Pandora’s box, bringing up all kinds of questions, concerns, obstacles and, yes, evils. It could have become an opening to an honest conversation about the lack of choice so many women find themselves facing.

I’m writing from Hershey, Pennsylvania, where there are women who work as counselors to women seeking abortion alternatives under a 20-yearold program. The counselors see women every day who feel as if circumstances, pressures and even the law encourage, if not demand, them to get an abortion.

But women who want another choice have these women to walk with them, giving them long-term ways to help them not only give birth but flourish as mothers and responsible women living in the world.

Clinton could inspire all kinds of reflections and examinations of conscience, however unintentionally. She also could opt to lead in ways that could result in some real freedom, not the faux one her party’s client base mandates.

Lockport rolls past Joliet West in SWSC Blue opener

cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Lockport softball coach Marissa Chovanec was looking for a different showing from her squad as it began SouthWest Suburban Conference Blue play Wednesday.

Two days after dropping a 9-8 nonconference game to Andrew, the Porters delivered a performance that was more to their coach’s liking as they had 15 hits, made only one error and pitcher Justine Cielenski allowed one earned run in their 11-2 victory at Joliet West.

Eight starters and three reserves

collected hits for Lockport (4-2, 1-0), which took control after scoring four runs in the second and two more in the third against the Tigers (5-5, 0-1).

“I’m real pleased with how we came out defensively and on the mound today after our game with Andrew on Monday, when we just didn’t play very good defense,” Chovanec said. “So it was good to see us do our job on the mound and limit our walks and defensive miscues. We had some really good defensive plays.

“A lot of credit to coach Ang (Angela Findlay) since we had a really good practice yesterday and focused on

defensive work and teaching the kids one pitch at a time. We’re still working through some kinks, but it’s all right since we were able to bounce back today. These kids challenge me every day, and I love it. They love to play the game and that’s fun to see.”

The Tigers actually grabbed the initial lead when they scored in the first inning. Kristen Ames (3 for 3) led off with an infield hit and alertly took second base on the play after an error.

After Ariana Liceaga sacrificed her, Ames scored on a single by Kiley Robb.

But Lockport moved in front for good in the second as Emily Dybas

walked and Gracie Voulgaris (2 for 4) reached on an error to start the inning.

After a sacrifice, they both scored on a single by Halle Hollatz and following a walk to Bailey Delrose, Hollatz came home on a single by Elena Woulfe (2 for 4). Zara Voulgaris (2 for 5) later singled in Delrose.

An inning later, Dybas and Gracie Voulgaris led off with hits, with the first scoring on a single by Delrose and the latter coming home on an infield out by Woulfe.

All of that provided a comfort level for senior right-hander Mike Stevens (2-0), who beat West (4-6-1, 0-1) for the second time. He also got the better of the Tigers in the opening round of the Don Ladas Memorial Tournament.

“He has been great all year,” Hill said of Stevens.

“Every time out he has been good,” Strysik added.

“The thing that makes me most proud about Mike Stevens is the way he keeps his composure on the mound,” Satunas said. “You want that from a senior. He’s been in a couple of tough situations this season and he has worked his way through it.”

West got back into the game early, scoring a run in each of the first two innings. In the first, Alex Tibble singled, stole second, moved up when Nick Gulliford pulled a groundball to first base and scored on Eastin May’s grounder to short, which was booted for an error.

In the second, Jordan Long singled,

advanced on Robert Kasheimer’s sacrifice and scored on an error.

However, Long’s single was the last hit for West. Stevens retired 10 straight hitters before he walked a batter and hit one to open the sixth. But he escaped unscathed as Strysik made a difficult catch in left field on Breven Daugherity’s line drive to end the inning.

Left-hander Dylan Barthel pitched a scoreless seventh inning to end it.

“He (Stevens) was pumping it in there pretty good,” West coach John Karczewski said. “We had opportunities but did not take advantage. We also gave them extra outs (both teams committed four errors), and we can’t do that.

“We didn’t locate our pitches – Colton (Foote) couldn’t throw his fastball for strikes. We didn’t make the plays and we did not hit in key situations. Those are the three things you have to do.”

The SWS Blue series between the teams continues with a 7 p.m. Friday game at Ed Flink Field in Lockport.

Going from practices to games, our energy goes up and if we get into a rhythm, we’ll be ready for anything.

We didn’t lose many players, so we’re still like the same group and all know each other and pick each other up.”

The Porters added three more runs in the sixth, as Bailee Moll (2 for 3) and Zara Voulgaris got two-out hits before Tara McElligott smacked a two-out double to left and then she later scored on a single by Gracie Voulgaris.

West finally scored again off Cielenski in the same inning when DeShonte Smith and Sidney Budzinski reached on infield singles before Karlee Barton singled to center. Lockport got two more runs in the seventh as pinch-hitters Emily Statzer, Elly Hagen (RBI) and Meghan Kelly (RBI) all got hits.

“Joliet West is always a good rival and good team to play,” Hollatz said.

“We did our jobs by moving runners and we had more-productive at-bats.

We made plays in the field by keeping the ball in front of us and Justine did real well on the mound. We all meld together and talk to each other when they get frustrated and we’re all like sisters.

we did make some adjustments at the plate and I was happy to see that.

“We have to start getting stronger mentally and physically on defense. I have confident that we can do that and if we do, we’re going to see a definite turn in our team.”

JOLIET – Getting through the middle of Lockport lineup in Wednesday’s SouthWest Suburban Blue opener for the Joliet West baseball pitching staff was akin to a stroll through a mine field.

Sooner or later, the Porters’ booming bats will get you.

The 3-4-5 hitters in coach Andy Satunas’ lineup – Anthony Cocco, Stephen Hill and Nick Strysik – combined for six hits, including two doubles and a home run, six RBIs and four runs scored as Lockport beat Joliet West, 7-2. Hill belted a two-run homer to left field in the third inning, stretching the Porters’ lead to 5-2.

“He (West left-hander Colton Foote) got me out a curveball the first time, and I knew he could come back to it again,” Hill said. “So I was sitting on it and he finally gave it to me (on a 2-2 pitch). I had the right backspin on it. It just kept going.”

Lockport (5-1, 1-0) scored three times in the first inning. After a walk and error, Cocco ripped a two-run double and eventually scored on Strysik’s sacrifice fly. Hill’s homer in the third followed a walk to Jake Huber.

Singles by Cocco and Hill set up a two-run fifth off West reliever Jordan Anderson. Strysik singled home one run and Joe McGuire’s fielder’s choice knocked in the other.

“You put the ball in play and good things happen,” Strysik said. “If you have runners on, you knock them in.

Our first inning is our big inning. We get it going then, and it never stops.”

“I have to give the guys in the middle of the lineup credit,” Satunas said.

“They work hard at their trade. They don’t take pitches off. Even when they are in the dugout, you can see the guys in the middle of the lineup getting ready to hit, having mental at-bats.”

Bertino to Butler a JCA signing highlight

dgoss@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet Catholic girls tennis coaches Terry Wrona, Mark Streitz and Bob Tomasino used to beat Nina Bertino regularly.

That was in her underclass years, however. These days, it does not happen very often.

Bertino, who will continue her career at NCAA Division I Butler University, was among 16 JCA senior athletes who were honored Wednesday afternoon during a national letter-of-intent signing day ceremony in the Student Activity Center.

Others cited were as follows:

NCAA Division II – Mariah Rodriguez, girls soccer, Illinois-Springfield; George Manikas, baseball, Lewis.

NAIA – Andriana Acosta, basketball, St Francis; Jordan Bates, football, USF; Luke Mander, football, USF. NCAA Division III – Mia Farrell, basketball, Chicago; Dan Gallagher, basketball, Benedictine; Jalen Jackson, basketball, Dubuque; Jared Lenoir,

“I’m so excited for everyone up here at the tables,” Bertino said. “I’m looking forward to the next chapter in my life.”

Bertino said she is undecided on a major, though it may be something in mathematics. As for how she will attack the tennis courts, she has a good idea. She went to state in doubles as a freshman and qualified for state the last three years in singles. She won her first three matches there last fall and earned a top-16 finish.

“I definitely like to mix it up,” Bertino said. “I am not just a baseline player. I will rush the net.”

“She has worked so hard,” said Wrona, the Angels’ coach. “She is dedicated. Her defensive artistry is unbelievable. You think you have a point against her, and all of a sudden, here

comes the ball back at you.”

“It has taken a lot of work,” Bertino said. “I have gotten better through the years with my endurance, so I am able to mix it up and move to different places on the court.”

Dedication and hard work were descriptions all the JCA coaches – from Wrona to baseball coach Jared Voss, girls soccer coach Oscar Valdez, girls basketball coach Nick Leonard, boys basketball coach Joe Gura and football coach and athletic director Dan Sharp – used when discussing their athletes who are moving on in their careers.

Acosta, for example, plays volleyball and soccer in addition to basketball, with the guarantee she will not be outworked. She could have played any of the three sports on some level in college. In fact, USF talked to her about playing soccer in addition to basketball.

“It’s very exciting to be going to St. Francis and playing for Sam [USF women’s basketball coach Samantha Quigley],” she said. “I feel there are parallels between us. She played three

sports here [at JCA], and she played basketball close to home in college [at DePaul]. She’s been through all that I have been through and will go through.

“She has a strong team at USF and I’m very excited to be joining them.”

Among Acosta’s future teammates with the Saints are former Angels Christina Ekhomu and Mary Rouse.

In addition to recognizing the athletes for their achievements, the coaches provided their parents and friends with some light-hearted moments.

“Jared, Jared,” Gura began as it came time to describe Lenoir. “You know how some kids drive you crazy ...

He was always so hard on himself. We finally got him to relax a little, and he took life and took basketball and just got after it.”

Then there was Bates. Sharp’s tale about the day Bates forgot his football shoes for practice, rummaged through the discard pile and wound up wearing two left shoes – which was not discovered until midway through practice – was priceless.

Just part of a festive occasion.

The Assiciated Press CHICAGO – John Lackey pitched into the seventh inning, Kris Bryant hit his first homer of the season and the Chicago Cubs matched the best eight-game start in franchise history with a 9-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday night.

Miguel Montero had two of Chicago’s 10 walks and scored three times as the Cubs improved to 7-1 for the first time since 1985 and just the 11th time overall. Jason Heyward drove in two runs with a two-out single in the third and robbed Scott Schebler of a hit with a diving grab in right-center in the fourth.

Lackey (2-0) allowed two runs and six hits in 62/3 innings in his first start at Wrigley Field since he signed a $32 million, two-year deal with Chicago in free agency over the winter. He struck out seven and walked three, rebounding nicely from a shaky start at Arizona last Thursday.

MINNEAPOLIS – Carlos Rodon worked his way out of trouble several times to complete six scoreless innings, Jerry Sands hit a two-run home run and the Chicago White Sox kept the Minnesota Twins winless with a 3-0 victory on Wednesday night.

At 0-8, the Twins have been outscored 33-13 this season.

The only other winless team in the majors is Atlanta, also 0-8. The Twins beat the Braves in that epic seven-game World Series in 1991 – some 25th anniversary this season is turning out to be for the two teams.

Rodon (1-1) needed 107 pitches to make it as far as he did. He walked five, including the leadoff man twice, but the Twins left the bases loaded in the sixth after filling them with one out. David Robertson pitched a perfect ninth inning for his fourth save in as many attempts.

The Twins struck out nine times and lead the majors with a whopping 88 whiffs.

Bulls erase early deficit, beat 76ers

CHICAGO – Nikola Mirotic scored 32 points, Justin Holliday added a career-high 29, and the Bulls closed a disappointing season with a 115-105 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday night.

Mirotic hit seven 3-pointers. Holiday made five from long range, matching a personal best. Jimmy Butler added 10 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists.

The Bulls wiped out an early 24-point deficit and led by as much as 19 to close out a less-than-golden 50th season on a winning note.

That’s little consolation for a team that expected to challenge LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers for supremacy in the Eastern Conference. Instead, they missed the playoffs for the first time since 2008 at 42-40.

Robert Covington led Philadelphia with 27 points, hitting six 3s.

The 76ers finished an NBA-worst 1072.

Hollis Thompson added 21 points, Jerami Grant had 20, but the 76ers ended the season on an all-too-famil-

iar note.

They head into the offseason with about $60 million in cap space and up to four first-round draft picks after former general manager Sam Hinkie gutted the team in recent years. He quit last week via a rambling 13-page manifesto to ownership and was replaced by former NBA executive of the year Bryan Colangelo, whose father Jerry also stepped aside as chairman of basketball operations.

With Derrick Rose and Pau Gasol among the top players sitting out, the Bulls looked like they were on their way to a blowout loss in the early going.

They were trailing, 42-18, and hearing it from the crowd after Covington nailed a 3-pointer early in the second quarter. But with the Sixers up by 21 late in the half, they turned it around in a big way, going on a 25-1 run that extended into the third.

The Bulls scored the final 12 points of the half and 19 in a row overall, including a dunk by Butler that cut it to 60-58. After Nerlens Noel hit a free throw, Holiday and Tony Snell capped the run with 3-pointers that made it 64-61 with less than nine minutes left in the third.

The NHL has once before made a significant change to its rookie of the year rules by establishing an age limit after 31-year-old Sergei Makarov won the Calder Trophy in 1990.

A player must now be 26 or younger to be eligible.

Former player and current TV broadcaster Jeremy Roenick doesn’t believe the league needs to do any more tinkering now that another player with Russian pro experience, 24-year-old Blackhawks forward Artemi Panarin, is the odds-on front-runner to win this season.

“Yes, his talents are a little bit more advanced because of the KHL, but still, he’s a rookie,” Roenick said during an NBC conference call on Tuesday. “He is just as dynamic as any player, especially any rookie player in the National Hockey League. I have no problem with it.”

Roenick has perspective, in part because he finished third in the Calder Cup voting in 1990, behind Mike Modano and Makarov, who had made the jump to the NHL after 13 seasons in Russia.

A BAND FOR ALL PEOPLE Symphony of Nations ministers outside the mainstream

JOLIET – Katie Henry looked at her phone. The text read, “Will you come play music for prostitutes with me?”

And Henry said she texted back, “Yes.” In the Bible, Jesus often ministered to society’s outcasts. Symphony of Nations strives to do the same.

The worship band is comprised of Christian musicians from several countries in their 20s and 30s, including Henry of Minnesota. Henry is the niece of the Rev. John Stillman, pastor of Crosswinds Church in Plainfield.

It was one of the band members who had texted Henry about the unusual music ministry opportunity, Henry said.

Symphony of Nations will perform a selection of its internationally styled worship music April 15 at the church, where the band will also give a presentation on its recent outreach to refugees and answer questions.

A free-will offering will be collected to support the band’s work.

“Wherever untouchable people like to go, we go there, like prisons.

Street music is OK. We do that sometimes as well,” Henry said. “This summer we’re doing a tour around refugee homes in Germany because there are many refugees. We will go to different places throughout the country.

Our music is about Jesus and hopeful things.”

Stillman said he was excited to hear about Symphony of Nations’ “real world” ministry and was happy to invite them to play at Crosswinds.

While the 90-minute event is open to people of all ages, Stillman said young people with leanings toward mission work can attend.

“I think it will be uplifting for the community as well,” Stillman said.

Music with meaning

Henry said she met the other members of Symphony of Nations in a small town in East Germany when she was part of the interdenominational Christian missionary organization Youth With a Mission.

As these young people informally played music together, they discussed using their music for ministry and banded together formally in January 2015, Henry said. Symphony of Nations has since led workshops and

Not every member plays every engagement or tour. In addition to Henry on trumpet and vocals, the musicians performing at Crosswinds

will be Jaro Aviv (guitar and vocals), Czech Republic; Clemens Winter (accordion), Germany; Johannes Birkenstock (drums), Germany; and Berenice Rodriguez (bass), Mexico.

Aviv writes most of the music, which Symphony of Nations performs in English, Czech and Hebrew, Henry said.

“It’s experimental music. I’m not totally sure how to define it,” Henry said. “It’s written by a gypsy guy and it gives off that vibe.”

Henry feels some people might question ministering to refugees with music when their survival needs are so large, but she feels an outreach of music is helping and encouraging.

“You’re reaching out with love. It doesn’t matter what you’re doing,” Henry said.

Henry hopes Symphony of Nations also will provide hope and encouragement to attendees at the musical event, regardless of their vocation.

That’s what the church – the body of believers – should do for one another, she said.

“We should stick together to do things to change the world,” Henry said. “This world is getting crazy, as you can tell. It’s super important that we are unified.”

Stillman agreed. Volunteer and service opportunities exist in the local community. People in need are everywhere. Christians must be ready to meet those needs.

“There are vulnerable people around us,” Stillman said. “We need to open up people’s hearts to Jesus and show Christ to them.”

Medicine lowers gout attack risk Dear Dr. K: I have had three attacks of gout in the past year. I never had it before. Now my doctor wants me to take a medicine every day, even though I feel fine. Is this a good idea?

Dear Reader: Well, you have a kindred soul in Doctor K, since I also have developed gout in recent years.

The disease occurs when a natural chemical called uric acid finds its way into the joints that connect two bones. All of us always have some amount of uric acid in our blood. In people with gout, the amount of uric acid usually is higher than normal.

An attack of gout can be quite painful.

Most of the time, it hits just one joint – often one of the big toes. However, it can be anywhere. Sometimes gout hits multiple joints at the same time. My last attack hit multiple joints in my right foot and in my right index finger.

There are two types of treatment for gout. To treat the pain of an acute attack, anti-inflammatory medicines are necessary. Several different kinds are used.

They quell the inflammation in the joint and ease the pain.

However, when people have repeated attacks, they also need to take a medicine that lowers the blood levels of uric acid.

I’ll bet that’s the treatment your doctor wants you to start. In the United States, the most commonly used medicine is allopurinol.

Lowering the blood levels of uric acid reduces the risk of future attacks of gout, although it does not completely eliminate it. So, like many treatments, you’re taking a treatment not to relieve suffering you currently have; instead, you’re

It is easy to tell if the treatment is working: Checking levels of uric acid requires just a simple blood test. But the treatment will work only if you take it as prescribed, meaning every day.

The daily treatment might have one other important benefit in addition to reducing future attacks of gout. A recent study of more than 40,000 people followed for almost seven years identified a remarkable result. The study compared people with gout who did not take uric acid-lowering treatment to people with gout who did. People who did not take treatment had more than double the risk of dying from heart disease.

Atherosclerosis of the heart’s arteries is the greatest cause of premature death in developed nations. It is made worse by inflammation. And there is growing evidence inflammation anywhere in the body can negatively affect the arteries of the heart (and brain).

Last week, I wrote about the Jacoby Forcing Major-Suit Raise, responding two no-trump after partner opens one heart or one spade and the next player passes. I said that you could use simple rebids instead of textbook Jacoby. Not surprisingly, some emails came in asking for a description of Oswald Jacoby’s methods.

The opener’s top priority with his rebid is to jump to four of a five-card side suit that contains at least two of the top three honors -- as in today’s deal. Then responder will know if it is a double-fit deal and probably can count the partnership’s winners.

Here, North, over four hearts, with two fast diamond losers, control-bids five clubs, learns that his partner has a first-round diamond control, and jumps to seven spades.

How should South plan the play after West leads the diamond king to declarer’s ace? What would have been a more effective lead by West?

When in a grand slam, start by trying to find 13 winners. In this deal, you have four spades, five hearts, one diamond, one club and two club ruffs in the South hand. It is a dummy reversal. However, since the trumps are breaking 4-0 (nearly a 10 percent probability), South must be careful. He needs to draw one round of trumps using his king or jack, not dummy’s ace or queen. Then, when he sees the bad split, he plays a club to dummy’s ace, ruffs a club, leads a heart to dummy, ruffs the last club, draws trumps, and claims.

Yes, here, a heart lead would be fatal because it prematurely removes one of the necessary dummy entries.

ADVERTISEMENT FOR BID The Board of Education, Lockport Township High School District 205, Administrative Offices at 1323 East Seventh Street, Lockport, IL 60441 will receive sealed bids for: 2016 North Access Drive Pavement Replacement for Lockport Township High School East Campus ATTN: Mr. William Thompson, Director of Facilities Bids are invited from pre-qualified Paving Contractors for the 2016 North Access Drive Pavement Replacement Project at Lockport Township High School East Campus. Therefore, an Environmental Impact Statement under the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA) is not required. Additional project information is contained in the Environmental Review Record (ERR) on file at the above address in the Multifamily Program Department and may be examined or copied (for a fee) weekdays 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. No further environmental review of such project is proposed to be conducted prior to the request for release of Federal funds.

The reasons for such decision not to prepare such Statement are as follows: The local environment is proven to be an acceptable living habitat for St. Elizabeth Residences. The use of the property will not change after the new construction by St. Ann's Senior Residences Limited Partnership [Set forth reasons for decision. See Part 58.37.]

Conditions of approval: Mitigation measures identified in Phase I dated March 4, 2015 to follow recommendations by Illinois Department of Natural Resources for the purpose of reducing the impact of construction activities on the state-endangered Blanding's Turtle (Emydoidea blandingii) is a requirement of the project. ENVIRONMENTAL CERTIFICATION St. Ann's Senior Residences Limited Partnership, acting as Sponsor to the Authority, will undertake the project described above with HOME funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The Authority certifies to HUD that the Authority and Ms. Audra Hamernik, in her official capacity as Certifying Officer consents to accept the jurisdiction of the Federal courts if action is brought to enforce responsibilities in relation to the environmental review process and that these responsibilities have been satisfied. HUD's approval of the certification satisfies its responsibilities under the NEPA [National Environmental Policy Act of 1969] and related laws and authorities and allows the Illinois Housing Development Authority to use Program funds.

HUD will accept objections to its release of fund and the Authority's certification for a period of fifteen days following the anticipated submission date or its actual receipt of the request (whichever is later) only if they are on one of the following bases: (a) the certification was not executed by the Certifying Officer of the Authority; or (b) the Authority has omitted a step or failed to make a decision or finding required by HUD regulations at 24 CFR part 58; (c) the grant recipient or other participants in the development process have committed funds, incurred costs or undertaken activities not authorized by 24 CFR Part 58 before approval of a release of funds by HUD or (d) another Federal agency acting pursuant to 40 CFR Part 1504 has submitted a written finding that the project is unsatisfactory from the standpoint of environmental quality. Objections must be prepared and submitted in accordance with the required procedures (24 CFR Part 58, Sec. 58.76) and shall be addressed to Mr. Ray E.
