ROMEOVILLE – ELS Language Centers joined the Lewis University community this fall to offer instruction in multiple levels of English as a Second Language to international students from abroad. Contributing to international diversity, the ELS program will provide offices, classrooms and a language laboratory for students on the Lewis campus in Mother Teresa Hall, which started in October. ELS operates continuously in four-week sessions, consisting of six classes a day, 52 weeks a year. Students will participate in various classes that focus on structure and speaking practice, language studies and reading and writing. Students also may choose to take skills enhancement classes that focus on conversation, listening comprehension, American culture, public speaking and current
events. ELS international students will have the opportunity to reside in a residence hall on campus, or participate in a “home stay” program in the region while taking courses. Students who opt for the “home stay” program will live with nearby American families, allowing for additional opportunities to enhance their English speaking abilities and become acquainted with American customs. ELS is actively recruiting families for the “home stay” program. With more than 50 locations nationwide, ELS is the largest network of U.S. campus-based English language instruction centers in the world. ELS has developed its own unique curriculum, textbooks and branded language-learning software. For information, contact Tyler King at tking@els.edu or 815-588-7211.
Happy 80th Birthday! Mary Ann Corcoran Mary Ann Kapellas was born in Joliet, IL in 1934, the daughter of Greek, Irish and German decent. She was an only child for seven years and enjoyed the attention of her parents. Taking care of her sister Kay and brother Paul, the three are still very close today. Encouraged by her Grandmother to dance at 5, and a full-time student by ten, she went on to student-teach while attending Providence Catholic H.S. Setting her goals to be a Professional Dancer and Instructor, she graduated from Providence in 1952 and went on to take dance at (CNADM) Chicago National Association of Dance Masters. She married Robert F. Corcoran at St Paul The Apostle Catholic Church on October 16, 1954 and just celebrated 60 years of marriage. They later settled down to raise three children at 515 Wilcox St., across from CFS. While attending (CNADM) she earned her master’s of Dance and established Mary Ann Corcoran Dance Studio. It was from this small two-bedroom bungalow that thousands of students came to be inspired by this tiny 5 foot woman. She joyfully taught two generations of young children to stand on a stage in front of their family and friends and let their guards down...if only for a moment. Many a frightened child would focus on her and her voice and the fear would somehow wash away! After thirty five years of business, the city of Joliet recognized Mary Ann Corcoran as one of their “Daughters”, naming May 26th “Mary Ann Corcoran Day”. She was the first woman in the city’s history to run a sole propriety for thirty five years. She once said, “It was never a job...always a pleasure to teach dancing to so many wonderful students”. Now retired, she keeps busy with her five grandchildren and her husband, Bob of now 60 years. Mary Ann, once again we wish you a very Happy 80th Birthday....”Please and Thank you”!
Love Your family and friends....

SHOREWOOD – James Massey of Shorewood, a member of Joliet Lodge 300, Loyal Order of Moose, was summoned to receive the Pilgrim Degree of Merit, the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a member of the Loyal Order of Moose. The conferral was May 31 in the House of God at Mooseheart. The degree, currently held by less than one-half of one percent of the members of the fraternity throughout the United States, Canada, Great Britain and Bermuda, is the Order’s ultimate reward for exceptional devotion to the principles and ideals of caring for children and senior members. It is earned only by members who have given years of “above-the-call-of-duty” service to the Loyal Order of Moose and its principle philanthropic endeavors of Mooseheart, a city for children in need, located 40 miles west of Chicago, and Moosehaven, a retirement community for senior members, located on the banks of the St. Johns River in Florida. The Pilgrim Degree ceremony, traditionally held on the same day as the Commencement Exercises for Mooseheart High School, is conferred only inside Mooseheart’s House of God, the magnificent multi-denominational cathedral built in 1950. Members receiving this degree are entitled to wear a much-coveted gold blazer, which is formally presented to the honoree during a special ceremony attended by other Pilgrims, members of the higher degrees of both the Loyal Order of Moose and Women of the Moose, family, friends, community leaders, and other members of the Order. Massey received his blazer Sept. 14 at Joliet Lodge 300. Also present were leaders of the Illinois Association to offer their congratulations to Massey.
