Election Central

vshanker@shawmedia.com The 97th District state representative seat is open for the taking with no incumbent running. Republican Mark Batinick and Democratic Moira Dunn are trying to fill the void. State Rep. Tom Cross, R-Oswego, is vacating his seat and running for state treasurer. His challenger in several elections, Democrat Dennis Grosskopf, dropped out after the primaries due to personal reasons. That left the door open for two new faces in the district.

Who are they? Mark Batinick owns a real estate business specializing in property for small businesses. He grew up in Lansing and has a degree in business edu- Mark cation from the Batinick University of Illinois. Batinick lives in Plainfield and is married with five kids under the age of 19, two sons and three daughters. His wife is a special education teacher. Batinick has coached kids basketball and soccer teams. He has been a member of the Plainfield and Oswego chambers of commerce, past

chairman of “For the Good of Illinois” political action committee and a precinct committeeman. He unsuccessfully ran for Will County Auditor in 2012. Moira Dunn was born in Joliet and grew up in Will County. She lives in Shorewood and is an assistant Will County state’s attorney. She received her bachelor degree in finance from Miami University in Ohio and her law degree from DePaul University. Moira Dunn is the daughter of Thomas Dunn, a former state senator and former Will County judge. She is not married. Dunn is a member of the Will County Bar Association and the Will County Women’s Bar Association. She also participates in the Big Brothers Big Sisters Mentor 2.0 program. She unsuccessfully ran for Will County judge in the spring election, but was selected by the Will and Kendall Democratic organizations to replace Grosskopf on the No-

vember ballot for state representative.

The issues Dunn draws strength from her own experience. While in law school, she discovered she had a brain tumor and underwent surgery after graduating. “I think we need more people in Spring- Moira field that know Dunn what it’s like to suffer like I did,” Dunn said, referring to the struggles of constituents in the district. Dunn opposes the income tax extension, wants to alleviate property taxes, and wants to put more funding towards education, veteran services and kids with special needs. Batinick believes in supporting small business. He points to the gradual decline in business he has seen in his hometown of Lansing, which borders Indiana. “I saw empty businesses that moved across the border to Indiana,” Batinick said. “My town was destroyed not by a disaster, but bad economic policy.” Batinick’s main goal is job creation. He also wants to alleviate property taxes and increase funding for social services, especially for the mentally ill.
