Juan Soto looks to remain in top form against rivals Boston Red Sox

The 2024 Major League Baseball season continues as the storied rivalry between the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox plays out on the field Sunday, June 16, at Fenway Park in Boston. Both teams are battling for top spot in the American League East, with the Yankees currently leading the division. The game airs live on ESPN.

The Yankees, led by manager Aaron Boone, have been a force this season. With a good mix of seasoned veterans and rising stars, they have one of the most well-rounded teams in the league.

One player fans will certainly be watching is Yankees outfielder Juan Soto, who has been a standout and consistent performer in 2024. Acquired in a blockbuster trade during the off-season, Soto has fit seamlessly into the Yankees lineup, providing a major boost to their offensive firepower.

Statistically, Soto has been a powerhouse this season, hitting .311 with 11 home runs and 37 RBIs over 48 games, while his on-base percentage (.411) and slugging percentage (.552) have made him a well-rounded threat of power and consistency at the plate this season. A ‘House’ divided: Civil war breaks out in new season of ‘House of the Dragon’

The bloody battle for the Iron Throne continues in the long-awaited return of “House of the Dragon.” The “Game of Thrones” prequel series is back Sunday, June 16, on HBO and its Max streaming service, with the eight-episode second season continuing the story of House Targaryen and the ruthless usurpers who paved the way for the brutal power struggles of the original series.

This season further explores the division in Westeros following the death of King Viserys (Paddy Considine, “The Outsider”). The realm is now split in allegiance to either the Green or Black councils, forcing a civil war in service of the rightful heir. Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen, portrayed by Emma D’Arcy (“Misbehaviour,” 2020), the daughter of Viserys, expected to ascend to the throne after his death, but she and her council were thrown when another successor was named king.

The one in the seat of power, King Aegon II Targaryen (Tom Glynn-Carney, “Dunkirk,” 2017), leads the Green Council. Like so many of the battles waged in the extended A Song of Ice and Fire franchise from author George R. R. Martin, who serves as co-creator and executive producer for “House of the Dragon,” the line of succession is complicated by complex family trees. While Rhaenyra is the only living child from Viserys’ first marriage, Aegon is his first-born son with his second wife, Queen Alicent Hightower, portrayed by Olivia Cooke (“Ready Player One,” 2018).

HBO released two “dueling” trailers in

March, teasing the new season — one Black and one Green — and revealing a peek into the motivations of each council. Everyone in the realm — and the fans at home — must choose which side of House Targaryen they stand behind while they prepare to wage war against each other.

“House of the Dragon” co-creator and showrunner Ryan J. Condal (“Colony”) spoke with Entertainment Weekly in March about the upcoming season, hinting that while the war begins because two half-siblings are jockeying for position on the throne, the fight for power becomes more complicated than that.

Condal shared: “It’s a story of this family that’s been rent open by this dispute over who is meant to wear the crown after Viserys passes. Some people think it’s Rhaenyra, some people think it’s Aegon, and then there are other people within who think, ‘Why should it be one of the two of them? Maybe it should be someone else. Maybe it should be me!’”

About all of the pieces on the “House of the Dragon” chessboard, Condal added, “The fun of this Greek tragedy is seeing, when you introduce a power vacuum to a world like this, how all of these individuals react.”

In an official trailer for the upcoming season, Alicent warns Aegon that war must be fought “cautiously,” while the king, fueled by revenge, embraces the battles to come with more passion than tact. Rhaenyra, meanwhile, questions whether Prince Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith, “Doctor Who”) accepts her rule as he prepares for war, hungry to lead on his own.

Experienced dragon rider Daemon amassed a number of dragons and eggs last season, making him a clear threat to the Green Council, but his loyalty to the Black Queen is also questionable — he may just live up to his name as the “Rogue Prince” with an army of fire breathers behind him.

Centuries before the battles of “Game of Thrones,” Westeros found itself on the verge of catastrophe, as King Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney) and Queen Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) fought their own battle for control of the Iron Throne. Vanessa Lachey OF NCIS: HAWAI’I ON CBS/PARAMOUNT+

Q: Will the season-ending cliffhanger that involved Vanessa Lachey’s character on “NCIS: Hawai’i” ever be resolved?

A: Apparently not, unless the now-canceled CBS show’s producers reveal (if they even thought that far ahead) what was planned via other avenues. The Season 3 conclusion was filmed before the network made its decision not to renew the series, so what you saw was what you got … not only in the case of that episode, but for the show as a whole.

Lachey was quite emotional in discussing the end of the program in social-media posts she made, saying that she was “gutted, confused (and) blindsided” by the cancellation notice, which denied the show’s cast and crew (who worked on location in the islands making the series) the opportunity for an official goodbye party. Much attention had been paid to the fact that Lachey’s Jane Tennant was the first female leader of an NCIS team in the franchise, and the actress stated, “This show has meant so much to me.”

While “NCIS: Hawai’i” also ran on Paramount+, and some CBS shows have moved to that streaming service to finish out their runs (“SEAL Team” and “Evil” being among examples), the high price tag of the location filming in this case likely was too prohibitive. There still will be another “NCIS” drama besides the parent series on CBS in the forthcoming season: the new “NCIS: Origins,” which will focus on the younger years of the Leroy Jethro Gibbs character. Original portrayer Mark Harmon (also an executive producer) will narrate the show, but the central role will be played by Austin Stowell. Paramount+ also has “NCIS: Tony & Ziva” coming, reuniting stars Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo.

Q: I’m loving the new season of “Doctor Who” so far, but I still miss Peter Capaldi as The Doctor. What’s he been doing since he left the role?

A: I think we always knew Peter Capaldi would land on his feet after leaving the TARDIS (for the uninitiated, that’s The Doctor’s time- and space-ship on the long-running sci-fi series “Doctor Who”). Of all the actors to play the character, Capaldi (also known for “The Thick of It”) was one of the most established before he took the role.

Q: Is Gerard Butler going to do another “Has Fallen” movie? I loved the first three.

A: It’s nothing but good news on this front, even if it’s a bit overdue. Yes, there will be another “Has Fallen” film, and maybe more than one. We just don’t know when. The first three — “Olympus Has Fallen” (2013), “London Has Fallen” (2016) and “Angel Has Fallen” (2019) — were huge money-makers, so a fourth one certainly makes a lot of sense.

But you may have noticed something in those release dates: The first three films, which featured Gerard Butler (“300,” 2006) as a Secret Service agent with a knack for single-handedly saving the world, were all released three years apart.

That makes the fourth one,

Two factors have slowed it down: the Hollywood strikes and the fact that Butler was suing the films’ production companies for unpaid profits from the first film.

But the strikes are now over and the lawsuit is settled, so work can get underway. Unfortunately, it hasn’t — yet — though the people involved are keen.

Last September, producer Les Weldon told Collider magazine that “Night Has Fallen” is, indeed, still on the way. Not only that, but if it performs as well as everyone expects, there will be more.

“We need to do the next one, and if that works as well as the previous three, then anything is on the table, really.”
