STERLING – One of the law’s most enduring symbols is Lady Justice, blindfolded to prejudice and weighing right and wrong in her scales, a tireless advocate of fairness.

Not unlike the Sauk Valley’s own lady justice, Vicki Wright.

Wright, 59, was elected in November to her second 10-year term as a judge for the Third District Appellate Court, one of seven judges in the district that includes Whiteside County among its 21-county region. It’s the capstone to a career in law that’s spanned decades and built an enduring legacy of fairness, something she first got a taste for at her father’s diner.

IMMIGRATION BAN | FEDERAL COURT RULING

‘A very careful judge’ Man who ruled against Trump’s executive order described as ‘conservative’ and ‘courageous’ SEATTLE (AP) – The Seattle judge derided by President Donald Trump on Twitter Saturday after blocking Trump’s executive order on immigration is known for his conservative legal views, for a record of helping disadvantaged children that includes fostering six of them, and for dramatically declaring “black lives matter” during a hearing on police reform in 2015.

Judge James L. Robart, 69, was appointed to the bench by President George W. Bush in 2004, following a distinguished 30-year career in private practice that included his selection to the American College of Trial Lawyers, an honor bestowed on less than 1 percent of lawyers.

The judge made the most high-profile ruling of his tenure Friday when he temporarily invalidated Trump’s ban on travel to the U.S. from seven primarily Muslim nations. Washington state sued to block the order – with support from Minnesota and major corporations including Microsoft, Amazon and Expedia – arguing that it’s unconstitutional and would harm its residents, and Robart held that the state was likely correct.

The ruling did not sit well with the president, who on Twitter called Robart a “so-called judge” and the ruling “ridiculous.” The president later falsely claimed the decision meant “anyone, even with bad intentions, can come into U.S.” The comments are unlikely to sway Robart, said those who know him.

“Jim will give a wry smile, maybe adjust his bowtie a little bit and go back to doing his business,” said former Seattle U.S. attorney John McKay, who worked with Robart for a decade at the law firm of Lane Powell Spears Lubersky. “He’s a very careful judge, and he’s conservative in the sense he looks at the law and tries to determine what that is, not what he wants.

He’s conservative in his review of the law, but courageous in his application of it.”

Another former Seattle U.S. attorney, Jenny Durkan, called Robart exacting: “We won some in front of him and we lost some in front of him, but we knew anytime we walked into his courtroom we’d better be prepared.”

That was evident Friday when Robart grilled a Justice Department lawyer, Michelle Bennett, asking whether foreign nationals from the seven countries named in the order had been arrested for plots in the U.S. since 9/11. Bennett said she didn’t know.

“The answer to that is none, best I can tell,” Robart said. “You’re here arguing on behalf of someone that says we have to protect the United States from these individuals coming from these countries, and there’s no support for that.”

He added that he was tasked with determining whether the president’s order was “grounded in facts, as opposed to fiction.”

Green Bay police say 20-year-old Lovea Moore faces charges in two Wisconsin counties for stealing goods such as Crest White strips, Rogaine and Gillette Fusion razor blades.

Lt. Rick Belanger of the Green Bay Police Department says it was “just grab, grab, grab, and go.”

Trump ban brings out scammers CHICAGO (AP) – Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan is warning immigrants to beware of scam artists taking advantage of confusion over President Donald Trump’s order temporarily halted the U.S. refugee program and banning all entries from seven Muslim-majority nations for 90 days.

She also warned immigrants to be wary of anyone demanding money and claiming to be a government official. Madigan says the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services will never ask for payment over the phone.

Immigrants with concerns about travel can contact their local consulate office.

Other sources for information on the executive order are the National Immigration Justice Center and the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois.

Hiring campaign attracts minorities

CHICAGO (AP) – Chicago’s police superintendent says most of the 16,500 applications submitted to become officers during a recent recruitment campaign were from minorities.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports Eddie Johnson as saying he’s “ecstatic” that 35 percent of applicants are black and 33 percent Hispanic; 29 percent are white.

Hiring more minorities was among the city’s goals as it tried to mend relationships with different communities in the wake of high-profile shootings by officers. Mayor Rahm Emanuel has said boosting officer numbers also will help address spikes in gun violence.

Johnson says the numbers of applicants shows there are many people who want to be part of change in the department.

The 2-month recruitment drive began in November.

The Sun-Times reports that 970 of the applicants will eventually be hired.

and he issued a landmark decision – later upheld by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals – in a lawsuit between Microsoft and Motorola that provided guidance in how to calculate reasonable rates for use of another company’s patents.

He’s considered a tough sentencing judge in criminal matters, especially in cases involving white-collar defendants, and he has overseen reforms at the Seattle Police Department since 2012, when it agreed to make changes in response to Justice Department findings that its officers were too quick to use force, especially in low-level situations.

Robart was holding a hearing in that case in summer 2015 – a time fraught with tension over violence by and against police officers around the country – when he surprised the courtroom by adopting the mantra of protesters.

“The importance of this issue to me is best demonstrated by the news,” he said, shaking his head and sighing heavily. “According to FBI statistics, police shootings resulting in death involve 41 percent black people, despite being only 20 percent of the population living in those cities. Forty-one percent of the casualties, 20 percent of the population: Black lives matter.”

Robart donated to the state Republican party and to GOP candidates before becoming a judge, but was picked for the bench with the help of a bipartisan selection panel.

OREGON – Oregon Public Library renovations are bringing in more people at every level.

“People are coming in to read the papers and kids come in to do homework,” Library Director Andrew Dettman said.

“We’re getting more kids at Story Time.”

One of the draws is a spacious elevator that stops at all three floors and makes the library complaint with Americans with Disabilities Act standards. The elevator entrance was added to the north side of the building, near four new parking places, one of which is for the handicapped, and is accessible by new sidewalks that now run completely around the structure.

The totally revamped basement also has two new handicapped-accessible restrooms.

Only a few finishing touches remain, Dettman said. After that — in late February or early March — a grand reopening is planned.

Some unexpected work cropped up that slowed the remodel, which began Nov. 5, 2015. For example, the “completely outdated” electrical system had to be replaced throughout the building, he said.

Built in 1908 with money donated by Pittsburgh businessman and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, the library is on the National Register of Historic Places, and the library board decided to keep as much of its original flavor as possible.

Armed with an old photograph, they set out to restore the fireplace as authentically as possible.

The basement has become headquarters for the younger set: Programming and materials for preschoolers to teens is now on the lowest level.

Study stations complete with computers are ready for doing homework in the teens and tweens space,

while the children’s space offers kid-sized chairs and tables and colorful carpet squares.

Oregon Elementary School students are designing a mural for one of the walls.

Moving the children’s and young adults’ to the basement means the main floor has more room

for browsing the stacks, reading, and working at one of the five computer stations.

It also means the third floor art gallery, where carpet was removed to reveal the original, and now refinished, wood floor, once again can be used as it was intended.

Artwork that’s been in storage will be displayed, and movable walls will be utilized to exhibit the gallery’s pieces and for art shows.

The library also is teaming up with Northern Illinois University and local

artists to provide art programs.

The stately, turning front staircase now goes all the way from the gallery to the basement. and the old restroom at the bottom of the stairs, which once blocked the way to the basement, is gone.

Other conveniences include a drive-up book drop-off and outdoor furniture on the new patio for reading and socializing.

The entire project cost about $600,000, paid for by a state grant and funds the library district already had.

ILLINOIS BUDGET

Rauner promises more of the same in next budget message CHICAGO (AP) – Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner says his annual budget message this month will be similar to one he delivered last year, asking legislators to work with him on crafting a balanced spending plan or allowing him to make cuts of his own.

That’s what Rauner told the Chicago Tribune during a series of meetings with Illinois newspaper editorial boards last week.

Rauner also re-emphasized his demand for “structural change” as part of budget negotiations.

“Either the General Assembly authorizes me to make cuts – not my first choice but I’ll do that – or

let’s work together to do a balanced budget with cuts and, what I prefer is, a balance of cuts, some revenues and major structural change,” Rauner told the Tribune. “The real important thing is the structural change.”

The state has not had a full budget in nearly 2 years as a budget stalemate grinds on between Rauner and Democratic leaders in the Legislature.

House Democrats say Rauner’s reform proposals should be considered separately from budget talks, and rejected his two budget options last year.

Rauner says he has compromised on some of the

proposals he considers “structural change.” His agenda originally included changes to the state workers’ compensation system, union collective bargaining rights and public worker pensions. The governor also is seeking a property tax freeze, term limits for elected officials and a plan to rid much of the politics from every-decade redrawing of legislative district boundaries.

The Rockford Register Star reports that Rauner sounded optimistic in a meeting with its board, citing recent bipartisan Senate negotiations over a budget compromise.

A prescription for trouble: Forcing patients to change their prescription Proposed rules would keep patients on drugs that work Tribune News Service

WASHINGTON – When she was 12, Logan began having suicidal thoughts. She started cutting herself and withdrew from her friends. She went from being a straight-A student to a failing one, and had to give up a coveted spot at her magnet school in Tennessee.

Logan’s psychiatrist prescribed the antidepressant Pexeva, which for 4 years helped her bounce back in school and reconnect with friends. Then, during Logan’s junior year in high school, her father’s health plan raised the price of Pexeva from $5 to $200 a month, which was too expensive for her family.

Her psychiatrist argued with the insurer on her behalf. The doctor pointed out that Logan’s mother was manic depressive, and it was possible that Logan would turn out to be as well. The psychiatrist had selected Pexeva because it is an antidepressant that does not trigger mania in patients with bipolar disorder.

But the insurer, Cigna, refused to relent, advising Logan’s family to switch her to a less expensive antidepressant. Reluctantly they did – with disastrous results.

“Three weeks after I started on the new medication, I had my first manic episode,” said Logan, who asked that her last name be withheld because of the stigma associated with mental illness. In her psychosis, she tried to kill herself, which led to a 2-week stay in a psychiatric ward. She tried a series of medications that stabilized her, but only temporarily, and they caused noxious side effects such as nausea, migraines, tremors and vocal tics. “It was chaos, absolute chaos,” Logan, now 25, said.

Examples like Logan’s are why more states are adopting policies that prevent insurers from ceasing to cover a medication in the middle of the year, when a patient is still locked in to a particular plan, unless there is a good medical reason for doing so. The laws also limit midyear increases in what patients must pay for a drug.

In the past 2 two years, California and Nevada have adopted such rules. Florida is considering and Tennessee is expected to consider similar legislation this year, and Massachusetts has created a commission to explore the idea. (The laws would not prevent insurers from immediately dropping drugs deemed unsafe by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.)

Insurers and the pharmaceutical industry argue that midyear changes make it possible for them to give patients the latest and most effective treatments. They also contend that the practice allows them to offer patients alternatives when a drug company suddenly raises the price of a particular drug.

Cigna did not address Logan’s particular experience, but spokeswoman Karen Eldred said the company’s decisions about adding or removing drugs from coverage are intended to help patients “take advantage of new clinical solutions and reduce their prescription drug spending while also enhancing patient safety.” Eldred added that Cigna is willing to “work with a customer’s doctor if there is a reason to consider approving coverage for a non-covered drug as medically necessary.”

Medicare, the government health plan for seniors, already prohibits midyear changes unless the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services authorizes it. But even then, Medicare allows patients who are on a medication to remain on it with little or no change to their out-of-pocket cost. Medicaid, the health plan run jointly by the states and the federal government, has no such prohibition.

The coalition pushing for the legislation includes doctor and nurse professional associations and organizations representing those with chronic diseases, such as HIVAIDS, arthritis and autoimmune diseases.

They argue that when health plans change their formularies (the medications a health plan covers) in the middle of a contract year, it often leaves patients without a suitable alternative or having to pay much higher out-of-pocket costs. And they are unable to switch insurers to find relief. Many people with chronic conditions select health plans precisely because those plans cover a particular drug at an affordable price.

“Patients who are doing well under a certain treatment are having the rug pulled out from under them and denied the medications that they and their doctors say they need,” said Robert Levin, a rheumatologist in Clearwater, Florida. Levin is president of the Florida Society of Rheumatology, which is supporting a bill in the Florida Legislature that would restrict midyear formulary changes.

But insurers and drug companies argue that while individual patients might suffer hardships, the flexibility to change formularies helps keep drug prices down for everybody.

“Restricting the ability of plans to make formulary changes midyear would limit consumer access, increase the risks to consumer health, and add unnecessary costs to care,” said Kristine Grow, a spokeswoman for America’s Health Insurance Plans, a lobbying organization of the commercial health insurance industry.

Are we too close to our phones?

In the movie “La La Land,” the heroine fields calls in the current style, with her cellphone pressed close to her ear.

When President Barack Obama gave his farewell address, he equated innovation with “a computer in every pocket.”

Some users sleep with their cellphones on the nightstand – or even tucked under the pillow.

But how close should you really get to your cellphone?

The answer depends, in part, on whom you ask. Government experts say cellphones, which emit radio frequency radiation, have not conclusively been linked to any health problem. But some critics point to studies they say raise concerns, including a preliminary report by the National Toxicology Program that rats exposed to cellphone radiation experienced a small but significant increase in heart and brain tumors.

Critics also point to studies indicating that cellphone exposure may negatively affect sperm quality.

Given those considerations, we asked government spokespeople, an industry representative and a skeptical scientist what Americans should do if they want to reduce their exposure to cellphone radiation.

Here’s what we found: Follow the advice of the cellphone manufacturer. And no, you’re probably not doing that. Cellphones are tested for radiation emission – and approved by the government as safe for use – at a small but significant distance from your body. You should be able to find that distance in the fine print of your manual or other instructions that come with your phone, and it differs from phone to phone. You’re supposed to keep an iPhone 7 at least about 0.2 inches away from your body, a Samsung Galaxy S6 at least 0.6 inches, and a Google Pixel about 0.4 inches away.

The takeaway: Don’t keep your cellphone in your pocket or your bra when it’s powered on.

If you want to go further, consider the suggestions of government scientists.

You’ll see small differences in the positions stated on the websites of various government agencies, with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) telling us, reassuringly that “the weight of scientific evidence has not linked cellphones with any health problems.”

The National Toxicology Program at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences agrees that there’s no conclusive evidence linking cellphones to any health problems. But it also says that “little is known about potential health effects of long-term exposure to radio frequency radiation,” the kind of radiation emitted by cellphones, and that data from human studies is inconsistent.

The takeaway: Both the FDA and the NTP say that if you are concerned about cellphone radiation, you can take two simple steps. You can reduce the amount of time you spend using your cellphone, and you can use speaker mode or a headset to increase the distance between your head and the phone.

Want to do everything possible, short of ditching your cellphone? There are webpages for that, but make sure you choose the right one.

Rather than scrolling around and scaring yourself with off-the-wall claims, consider turning to reputable scientists, such as Devra Davis, who was the founding director of the Center for Environmental Oncology at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, or Joel Moskowitz, director of the Center for Family and Community Health at the University of California at Berkeley. Moskowitz and Davis are among the more than 220 scientists who have signed the International Electromagnetic Field Scientist Appeal calling for tougher limits on cellphones and related technologies.

The takeaway: Moskowitz offers an extensive list of steps you can take to reduce radiation exposure, including: 1.) Keep your distance. Keep your cellphone or cordless phone away from your body when it’s powered on, taking special care to maintain distance from your head and reproductive organs. Use your speakerphone or a wired headset, or text instead of calling.

2.) Wait for a good signal. Your cellphone emits more radiation when the signal is poor, so avoid using it while in enclosed metal areas such as elevators, cars, buses, trains or planes.

3.) Avoid secondhand exposure.

Reduce the time you spend in places where a lot of people are packed together and using cellphones.

4.) Turn off your phone. Turn off your cellphone when not in use, or switch to airplane mode.

The legislation’s chances of passage are uncertain. Backers of Trump’s moves say he is just fulfilling promises he made during the campaign, and warn that “sanctuary” cities and states risk losing their federal funding.

Ruiz-Velasco and others said the goal is to extend so-called sanctuary protections already on the books in Chicago and Cook County, where police aren’t allowed to ask about citizenship status and don’t cooperate with federal immigration authorities.

Reaction has been divided to a series of immigration-related executive orders signed in Trump’s first days as president, including one designed to allow local law enforcement to investigate, apprehend or detain immigrants living in the country without legal permission. Some states, like Texas, have moved to reinforce Trump’s orders, while lawmakers in California are advancing a statewide sanctuary proposal.

Illinois already has some of the nation’s most immigrantfriendly laws. Advocates are pushing sanctuary ordinances in suburbs like Oak Park. The state’s largest immigrant advocacy group, the Illinois Coalition of Immigrant and Refugee Rights, is pushing city officials to make Chicago’s rules stronger.

Democratic lawmakers say the two statewide proposals are just the beginning of what they want to do. But the extent of any opposition isn’t known.

While Democrats control the Illinois House and Senate, it’s not clear where Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner stands. He said that there are “serious concerns” about another Trump executive order suspending the nation’s refugee program, and urged resolution “through the courts.” When asked about sanctuary cities and states, he said in a statement that it’s “not a state issue” and he supports “comprehensive immigration reform.”

Other Republicans are opposed.

ing. Trump has threatened to strip federal money from sanctuary states.

“We’re kind of playing a dangerous game,” Cabello said of Illinois’ plans, adding that Trump is simply following through on campaign promises. “He is doing absolutely everything he said he was going to do.”

Democratic Rep. Emanuel Chris Welch of Hillside, who sponsored the schools bill, said his bill would offer peace of mind for immigrants in schools, churches or hospitals.

His plan would bar federal immigration agents from those sites, with few exceptions, such as obtaining a court-issued warrant. It’d also prohibit employees from asking about immigration status and require training on immigration issues.

“The day after the November election, I received calls that teaching and learning did not go on at my local school,” he said.

“Students were crying and worried about whether immigration officials were going to come into a school and teachers were predominantly counselors that day.”

Of Illinois’ nearly 13 million residents, close to 1.8 million are foreign born, according to Census data. The Pew Research Center estimates roughly 450,000 are living in Illinois illegally.

Democratic Rep. Lisa Hernandez of Cicero is drafting a separate bill that’d limit interaction between local authorities and immigration agencies. It would discourage information sharing and allow local police to decline requests from immigration officials to keep defendants in custody while they await deportation.

She said it would provide safeguards against Trump’s orders.

“Either we submit to his request that we are going to go his way or we push back,” Hernandez said.

As a girl growing up in Sandwich, Wright was informed with a strong sense of right and wrong by her parents. Her father owned Wright’s Diner and would never turn away a homeless person. He would give them a meal in exchange for doing a chore, such as sweeping the sidewalk.

It was there that she became accustomed to being around the public and ordinary people who do extraordinary things, like her father, something she’s carried with her into her adult life and that continues to drive her passion for the law.

Wright started her law career as an appellate prosecutor for the Third District Appellate Court in 1982 after graduating from Loyola University School of Law in Chicago. She became an assistant state’s attorney in Whiteside County in 1984 and was appointed the first female associate circuit judge for the 14th Judicial Circuit in 1991.

She became the first person from Whiteside County elected to the Third District Appellate Court in 2006.

Wright said she credits her career’s longevity to her strong work ethic and passion for neutrality.

“Maybe my biggest accomplishment that I’m most proud of is my work ethic,” Wright said. “I never – and I say never – had a scheduled afternoon off in my entire judicial career that allowed me to pursue private hobbies.”

One week out of every month, Wright travels to the appellate courthouse in Ottawa to hear cases, but most of her time is spent at her Sterling office.

As she looked out of her office window during a recent interview, she said she’s constantly reminded of her smalltown upbringing.

by Wright’s long-time friend, the Rev. Jeff Coester. Wright and Coester have known each other since attending Sandwich Junior High School, now Herman Dummer Middle School, and both graduated from Sandwich High School, Coester in 1974 and Wright in 1975.

“I love looking over there and knowing that he’s in that building,” Wright said. “Life just kind of brought us to the same corner but it tells you a lot about the values that we grew up with.”

Coester started at the church in 2008 but he didn’t reconnect with Wright until about a year and a half ago after finding her on Facebook.

He said her last name always seemed fitting because she always wanted to do the right

“She’s one of those people who seems to love to have the opportunity to be an encourager,” Coester said.

Wright said she believes her tireless efforts to serve people and a passion for the law is what got her elected to a second term, and she could not be more honored.

“What greater honor is there than somebody who will trust you to be fair?” she said. “That is like the ultimate compliment.”

Fairness doesn’t always come easy, though.

Wright said she’s noticed an increasing pressure on judges to make both sides in a case happy, but that’s not how the law works.

“I never approached the law that way,” Wright said. “When [parties] walk into the courtroom, they put their cards on the table and I think a judge does best when a judge just decides the cases based on the law.”

She has tried many cases during her career but there is one she thinks about often. When a young Fulton man was struggling to keep his in-home health care due to insurance coverage issues, she fought on his behalf to allow him to continue attending

junior college instead of entering a facility.

The next 10 years are sure to hold a lot for Wright, and she looks forward to helping shape the next generation of lawyers, especially women lawyers.

When Wright was appointed the first female associate circuit judge for the 14th Judicial Circuit, she had no footprints to follow and she said she wishes she knew half of what she knows now.

One thing she stresses to women who apply to be her law clerks is that they are welcome to start a family. Wright, who lives in Tampico with her husband Karl Kovarik, the 911 Coordinator for Whiteside County, and their two high school and college-aged children, said she waited to have kids until later in life because she was so invested in her career.

When the time came for Wright to go on maternity leave, she said she felt like she was burdening the male attorneys who had to cover for her.

“So, I tell all the female attorneys that come in here to interview: maternity leave is something that is built into this job.

If you want to get pregnant, it’s a given,” she said.

Wright sees amazing potential in her current law clerk, Mitch Johnston of Sterling. She said she hopes she can help him learn from her mistakes so he can get the most out of his life in the legal world.

From starting her career on one side of the appellate court bench to ending her career on the other, Wright’s life has come full circle, and although her second term just started, she’s already thinking about the fact that she will be almost 70 when her term is up. She said this will probably be her last term – but then again, who knows? She thought the same thing last year before running for appellate judge for a second time.

Lawmakers propose Obama holiday Tribune News Service

Some Illinois Democrats are pushing to make former President Barack Obama’s birthday a state holiday, according to the Springfield Journal-Register.

Two bills in the Illinois House and one in the

Senate would make Aug. 4, the 44th president’s birthday, an official state holiday.

The House bills would make it a “legal holiday,” in which state government offices would close, and schools and busi-

nesses would have the option of being closed.

A similar bill was considered last year. At the time, Gov. Bruce Rauner’s administration said the holiday would cost the state $3.2 million in salary.

Great again?

Try fumbling and bumbling America’s competence disappearing

Illinois’ credit report boils down to glum and glummer Six downgrades in 2 years point to stunning lack of leadership The latest Illinois credit rating downgrade from Fitch Ratings is chock full of phrases that could be used in the next campaign cycle against the governor and other incumbents.

The one that’s made the most headlines is “unprecedented failure,” as in Fitch’s downgrade “reflects the unprecedented failure of the state to enact a full budget for 2 consecutive years and the financial implications of spending far in excess of available revenues, which has resulted in increased accumulated liabilities and reduced financial flexibility.”

But that’s just stating the obvious. Pretty much anybody paying half attention out there knows the people who run the government are participating in an “unprecedented failure.” This has never happened before in Illinois, or in any other state, for that matter.

However, here’s another Fitch phrase: “fundamentally weakened,” as in “Even if the current attempts at a resolution to the extended impasse prove successful, Fitch believes that the failure to act to date has fundamentally weakened the state’s financial profile.”

In other words, digging out from under this impasse is going to be a long, hard, painful slog. And the longer the impasse lasts, the more difficult that process will become.

As the state’s economic activity appears to slow, a third Fitch observation is worth noting here: “Illinois has failed to capitalize on the economic growth of recent years to bolster its financial position.”

WHILE OTHER STATES were piling up surpluses during the national economic recovery, Illinois was creating a mountain of debt mainly because Democrats allowed the 2011 tax hike to partially expire and the Republican governor wouldn’t negotiate a new revenue and spending deal until he got his precious economic reforms.

So if the national economy does enter a recession in the coming months, Illinois will be in a truly horrible spot.

One more phrase from Fitch: “very weak,” as in “Illinois’ operating performance, both during the great recession and in this subsequent period of economic growth, has been very weak.”

Starting in 2002, Illinois has elected three governors in a row who can’t seem to get their arms around the job. And, instead of helping them do their jobs, legislative Democrats, particularly in the House, have preferred to fight and obstruct them.

Even the income tax

hike turned out to be a failure because it was temporary, expiring midway through a fiscal year while a Democratic governor was heading out the door. “Very weak,” indeed.

And speaking of weak, Gov. Bruce Rauner indicated to the Chicago Tribune last week that he plans to propose a budget much like the one he unveiled last year. In other words, yet another punt.

Last year, the governor punted on $3.5 billion in cuts needed to put his proposal into balance.

Instead of outlining the actual cuts, and therefore wearing the political jacket for suggesting those cuts, he simply said he was willing to work with the General Assembly on finding where to cut or the GA could give him the authority to make the cuts on his own – without first explaining where he would cut.

If cuts became necessary, the governor told his legislative audience last year, “I would ask the Legislature to work with us to make these tough decisions. If you are not willing to do that, then give the Executive Branch the flexibility to reallocate resources and make reductions to state spending as necessary.”

AND THIS IS WHAT Rauner told the Tribune last week: “Either the General Assembly authorizes me to make cuts – not my first choice but I’ll do that – or let’s work together to do a balanced budget with cuts and, what I prefer is, a balance of cuts, some revenues and major structural change.”

Instead, we get six downgrades in the past 2 years.

Publisher, Capitol Fax State law forbids governors from using revenue streams that aren’t currently in place to balance their budget proposals.

Rod Blagojevich did that time and time again, coming up with tax or fee plans that magically balanced his proposal.

But every reform has its downside, and the downside to this one is that instead of using phony revenues to balance a budget plan, Rauner has used phony cuts.

The root of “leadership” is “lead,” and that, by definition, means going first.

Our state Constitution, however flawed, built that leadership into its two main budgetary mandates. First, the governor proposes a balanced budget, then the General Assembly passes a balanced spending plan.

Neither have worked out too well of late, or for quite a while. But the state constitutional convention delegates obviously wanted governors to lead.

Instead, we get six downgrades in the past 2 years.

That’s not currently true with immigration officials.

In a week, they have been maligned globally. They are now seen as unfeeling autocrats incompetent to process legitimate visitors, students and immigrants already vetted for up to 24 months.

A 5-year-old boy pulled from his mother and held for hours at Dulles International Airport might be a terrorist? Families with proper documentation who have just flown across the Atlantic turned back into harm’s way?

We did that before World War II to a ship of Jews fleeing the Nazis. They were turned away, and a large number of them perished, some in concentration camps many Americans said didn’t exist.

Transparency and lack of corruption. That used to hallmark our government. Not on our watch did we tolerate dictators getting richer at taxpayer expense.

NOW WE HAVE a president who won’t show us his tax returns, refuses to divest himself of his businesses, and insists he avoids conflicts of interest by turning his moneymaking operations over to his sons.

So who shows up at important White House events? His sons, the very ones who planned to extract $50,000 apiece for meetings with their dad before it was pointed out this was exceedingly illegal. But there they were at the unveiling of the president’s Supreme Court pick.

The administration told officials who disagree with the president to quit, including hundreds of diplomats who worry his policies make the nation less safe. Yet Trump has frozen federal hiring.

If we saw this happening elsewhere, we would be appalled. Not in our transparent democracy, we’d sniff.

WE’VE BEEN KNOWN for keeping our word. You can trust those Americans when they make a promise, the world said. Now? Not so much.

Iraqis who risked their lives and their families to help American soldiers by translating and working for them during a decade of war feel they were lied to because they are not being resettled here, even though they may face death at home.

We promised to keep countries safe from invading Russian tanks. We promised to back NATO. Nobody knows what we will do now.

The frantic level of activity in the administration as Trump has rolled out executive orders willy nilly, almost none of them fully vetted by the people he has chosen to be in his Cabinet, has led to a perception around the globe of out-of-control chaos.

It’s hard to keep track of all the arbitrary dictates.

A quick review. No more enforcing Obamacare.

Repeal two regulations for every new one. Ban Syrians indefinitely, all refugees for 120 days and visitors from seven nations for 90 days. Keep military and intelligence chiefs out of security council meetings unless invited. Stop returning tax dollars to cities that don’t turn over undocumented immigrants. Build a $15 billion wall on the Mexican border. Develop a plan in 30 days to eradicate the Islamic State.

Review military readiness. Let the Keystone XL and Dakota Access pipelines go ahead. Defund international health programs that countenance abortion. Rip up trade agreements. Freeze federal hiring.

Competence. Government without corruption.

Transparency. Keeping our word. Speaking truth to power. So yesterday.

Go give that competent neighbor a hug. And return her leaf blower.

Friend fears drama could upset wedding Dear Abby, One of my best friends just got engaged and I’m invited to the wedding. My problem is, my ex-best friend is in the bridal party, and I don’t know how to act if I see her and have to talk to her. She terminated our friendship without giving me a reason. Not only that, she has been spreading lies about me to mutual friends, some of whom now refuse to talk to me.

I have no idea what I did or didn’t do. No one knows why she is spreading rumors, and I don’t want there to be drama at my friend’s wedding and bachelorette party. What can I do?

Pilot ordered for Carol Burnett show Tribune News Service

Comedy queen Carol Burnett’s return to the small screen looks imminent now that ABC has ordered a pilot for “Household Name.”

The multi-camera sitcom will be written and executive produced by Michael Saltzman and executive produced

by Amy Poehler.

The series will feature a family with the opportunity to buy the home of their dreams, but with a catch: They must live with the home’s current owner – an eccentric aging actress played by Burnett – until she dies.

ABC acquired the project in October via a putpilot commitment, meaning the network had to air the pilot as a series or special, or face steep financial penalties.

If ordered to become a series, “Household Name” would be the first non-variety/sketch show to feature Burnett as a regular.

Stupor Bowl has raised more than $200,000 for schools TRIVIA

But it’s a thought I kept coming back to while participating in the Dixon Public Schools Foundation’s annual Stupor Bowl fundraiser, a daylong trivia competition that raised about $13,500 through entry fees, auction items and other sales to go toward student equipment and the like.

Everyone has a variety of passions, hobbies and experiences that create a unique trove of information, and the Stupor Bowl pools all of those caches and tests what team has the strongest combination of knowledge that fits a random assortment of questions.

No one person is a know-it-all. It’s like bringing a dish to a potluck, adding a piece that helps to create a smorgasbord.

It was great to see what chips we could all add to the pot and to find out when all of our hands were empty.

For instance, I discovered that my colleagues and I had very limited knowledge of country music stars and the sitcom “The Big Bang Theory.”

It was my first time taking part in a trivia competition – discounting all of jeopardy-style study sessions in school and the occasional digital trivia game at a restaurant downstate that was toppled by a tornado some years back – and the Stupor Bowl’s cordial atmosphere is what I favored the most.

It reminded me quite a bit of the Rubik’s Cube competition in October

and a conversation with Dixonite Jean Brechon, one of the event hosts.

She told me the competition was unique in that the cubers battle with themselves more so than against the other participants – striving to make a personal best time or trying a new challenge.

That same concept applied to the Stupor Bowl. I was more focused on the challenge

of racking my brain for the right answers rather than the hope that other teams would get them wrong.

And it benefits local kids, so a cutthroat setting would be out of place.

I wasn’t the only one experiencing the bowl for the first time.

Father and son Mark and Elliott Frankfother were among the list of newcomers, and they

left the event with more than just a good first experience; they left with bragging rights.

The Rock Falls duo and their teammates – Mark’s wife, Dawn, and family friends Joel Klein, Irl Flanagan and John Burkardt – came out on top after the first four rounds with 130 points and went into the semifinals with teams Sinnissippi Centers, Miller & Lancaster and KSB Hospital 1.

The Frankfother Family team proceeded to the finals after leading KSB 175-135, a round that humbled all of the players regarding their knowledge of the periodic table of elements.

They were met in the finals by two-time Stupor Bowl champion Miller & Lancaster, which beat Sinnissippi 185-160.

The teams went into the winning 4-part question about U.S. Route 52 tied at 165-165, and the Frankfothers grasped victory, ending with 180 points.

Mark attributed much of the success to his teammates, like Elliott, 19, who was a part of Scholastic Bowl at Newman Central Catholic High School all 4 years.

Elliott’s favorite question was to name the show that follows a family at 742 Evergreen Terrace, to which he correctly responded “The Simpsons” in its well-known theme song melody.

The team plans to return next year to defend its title.

The event began in 1997 and has generated more than $200,000 for the foundation during the past 2 decades, foundation board Vice Chairman Tom Wadsworth said.

The 23 teams marked the highest participation since 2011, and the bowl had a record number of 17 sponsors.

Comeback Pats Patriots rally from 25 points down to win Super Bowl in OT

HOUSTON – Tom Brady led one of the greatest comebacks in sports history, highlighted by an unbelievable Julian Edelman catch that helped lift New England from a 25-point hole against the Atlanta Falcons to the Patriots’ fifth Super Bowl victory, the first ever in overtime.

The Patriots scored 19 points in the final quarter, including a pair of 2-point conversions, then marched relentlessly to James White’s 2-yard touchdown run in overtime to beat the Atlanta Falcons 34-28 Sunday night.

Brady, the first quarterback with five Super Bowl rings, guided the Patriots (17-2) through a tiring Atlanta defense for fourth-quarter touchdowns on a 6-yard pass to Danny Amendola and a 1-yard run by White, which came with 57 seconds remaining in regulation. White ran for the first 2-pointer and Amendola did the deed with a reception on the second.

Brady, winning Super Bowl MVP for a record fourth-time, finished 43 for 62, the most

attempts in Super Bowl history, for 466 yards, also a record, and two touchdowns.

“You know, we all brought each other back,” Brady said.

“We never felt out of it. It was a tough battle. They have a great team. I give them a lot of credit.

GENESEO – For the first time in nearly 40 years, Dixon has some plaque buildup when it comes to postseason wrestling.

The Dukes entered the Class 2A Geneseo regional on Saturday as one of the teams to beat, and left J.D.

ROCK FALLS – Most wrestling teams would love to have wrestlers in each weight class make it past the regional tournament.

The Rock Falls Rockets thought they had a realistic chance on making that happen at their 1A Regional at Tabor Gymnasium. As they cruised to their third straight regional championship – and their fourth in 5 years – the Rockets qualified 13 wrestlers to next week’s individual sectional tournament in Byron.

Newman was the closest team to Rock Falls’s winning total of 240 points. Rock Falls had five regional champions, and the Comets (142) had three.

“Our goal was 14, and we fell short,” Rock Falls coach Derick Cox said.

After Purdue took a timeout to set up a play, Edwards was fouled on a drive to the basket and calmly sank both shots.

Maryland freshman Kevin Huerter then hit the rim on a jumper from the corner, leaving Purdue to celebrate its first road win over a ranked opponent since 2013.

The Terrapins (20-3, 8-2) didn’t make a basket over the final 7 1/2 minutes, scoring their final 14 points at the free throw line – including 11 by Melo Trimble.

DIXON – The Oregon Hawks had been hot of late heading into their own regional Saturday at Plum Hollow. The Hawks used momentum to their advantage, as they finished second as a team to advance to sectionals.

“The girls threw the ball well all day,” Oregon head coach Eric Carlson said. “It proved how much they’ve learned. They’ve come a long way in the last 2 weeks of making sure we’re all working together.”

The Dixon Duchesses had also been shaping up lately into a team that could make another state run as well. Shaky fourth and fifth games made things interesting, but the Duchesses persevered to clinch a spot in sectionals.

“I tried not to let the girls know because we don’t want that pressure on them,” Dixon coach Larry LaCoursiere said.

“We missed a lot of spares coming out of lunch and that cost us badly. We told the girls to just calm down and trust their equipment.”

Sterling and Rock Falls each have one bowler representing their respective schools down at sectionals as well. Kyleigh Glazier will represent the Golden Warriors, while Miranda Long will compete for the Rockets.

Oregon jumped out to a big lead, knocking down 1,011 pins in the first game to give them a 109-pin advantage over second place Sycamore. It was a consistent team effort, as four Hawks were in the top six after the first game. Abi Scheidegger led the way with a 257, placing her in first in the individual standings by a whopping 41 pins. Victoria Barnhart and Caitlyn Kaltenbrun each shot 202, and Ali Scheidecker shot 196. Dixon was in third after the first game with 854 pins, thanks in large part to Katlyn Bay’s 196.

Oregon increased its lead slightly in the team standings in the second game due in large part to Barnhart’s 236 and games in the 200’s by the Scheidecker sisters. Bay jumped up to fifth in the individual standings with a 209 game, as the Duchesses clung to third as a team.

Oregon held onto the lead with 3,036 total pins after the morning series thanks to another 236 by Barnhart and a 211 from Kaltenbrun in the third game. Abigail Scheidecker led the individual standings with a 677 morning series, just three total pins clear of her teammate, Barnhart. Dixon remained in third as a team thanks to big third games out of Bay (233) and Virginia Gray (222). Glazer shot 568 in the morning series, good for 15th in the individual standings. Long rolled a 554 morning series, putting her in 20th over-

all. If the standings held through the afternoon series, both Glazier and Long would be headed to sectionals.

Sycamore and Oregon bowled together in the fourth set. The Spartans dominated the lane with a 1,086 fourth, as they outscored the Hawks by 186 pins to take their first lead of the day in the team standings, and never gave it back. The Sycamores’ Megan Kolberg captured the individual lead with 237 pins in the fourth, and never relinquished her spot at the top.

“We left 26 9-pin spares that game,” Carlson said. “If we carry those, we shoot 1,000 again and beat Sycamore. We should be contending at sectionals and I believe we can contend for the top three in state. The girls are that good.”

Despite dropping a spot, the Hawks were securely in the top four. Dixon, however, started to fall. Freeport jumped the Duchesses for third in the fourth game, while Dixon sat just 96 pins clear of Rockford Jefferson for the final team spot.

Things started to look bleak for the Duchesses after the fifth game. This time, Mendota leapfrogged Dixon for the fourth team spot. Bay dropped to eighth place in the individual standings.

Still though, the Duchesses were confident they could overcome a 6-pin deficit to the Trojans on their home lanes.

Both Rock Falls’ Long and Sterling’s Glazier were closing in on a berth in sectionals after the fifth game. The two bowlers sat in 16th and 17th place respectively, separated by just a pin with one game to go.

The final game could not have gone much better for the Hawks or Duchesses than it did.

Oregon rolled its highest game of the day with 1,016 total pins to finish firmly in second behind regional champion, Sycamore.

The Scheidecker sisters closed their days with turkeys, as Abil’s 226 helped her to second place overall with 1,296 total pins, while Ali’s 247 was a big enough boost to vault her into the top 10.

about the team,” Abi Scheidecker said. “I was just focused on bowling well to help my team, not move up in the individual standings. I know what potential this team has.”

“There’s no reason why we shouldn’t be in the top three, especially if we bowl like we did today.”

Dixon received a major lift from one of their leaders. Bay rolled a 246 to cap her day, as she finished fifth in the individual standings with 1,235 total pins. More importantly, her big game helped the Duchesses to a 956 sixth game, which boosted them all the way to third place with 5,412 total pins. Consistency will be crucial if the Duchesses are going to make it to state in back-to-back years.

“We have the team to do it,” LaCoursiere said. “We can bowl with anybody if we can just get everybody on and execute our shots. That’s the name of the game.”

Sterling finished ninth as a team with 4,896 total pins, but Glazier’s 1,111 pins secured her an individual spot in sectionals. It was a challenge for Sterling coach Loren Wolf to keep his bowler focused on her own game and not on other individuals’ scores.

“It’s some work to keep control of that,” Wolf said. “I’m very proud of her. We’ll have a week of practice to improve upon our placing here.”

Glazier will try to make the jump to state in 2017. A year ago at sectionals, she came up 23 pins shy of a berth at state. She’ll be relying on experience and muscle memory to take her to the Cherry Bowl.

“Last year I was so worried,” Glazier said. “This year I came in with the mindset that if I make it, I make it, and if I don’t, then I don’t. Loren worked with me on my stance, and I felt more prepared this year. I just did my thing and hoped for the best.”

Long made sure Rock Falls was going to be represented at the next level with 1,098 total pins.

She left the score-watching for her coach, while she bowled her way to her first sectional appearance in her senior season.

“I was keeping track after every game of where she stood in the standings,” Rock Falls coach Dave Guzzle said, “and updating her if she needed to get some good games going. All we needed for her was to get through.”

“It was really important to stay focused,” Long said. “I put a lot of effort into practicing hitting my mark every time, following through and what to do with my hand. It’s going to be tough against a lot of good bowlers.

Hopefully I just do my best.”

CONTINUED FROM B1 t “It feels good to be regional champs as a team,” Elder said. “In the training room, we fight with each other, we bleed together, we put in all the work together. To see everyone move on, that’s a pretty great accomplishment, more than individual.”

Five Rockets took second, and another three took third.

“Winning at this time feels great, but we made history this time,” Ager said. “Thirteen out of 14 advanced to sectionals, that’s the highest ever. That alone feels great.”

Benti and Elder each wrestled three matches. Elder started off with two pins before beating AFC’s Brendyn Williams with a 17-6 major decision. Benti pined each of his opponents, and had to come from behind against the Raiders’ Colin Kaecker in the finals to get his third pin.

Kaecker scored a takedown 12 seconds into the match, and Benti escaped from it about 30 seconds later.

Once in neutral, Benti tried to slip in as many as three half-nelsons, each to no avail. Once Kaecker let loose, Benti drove in another and locked him down for a quick pin in 1 minute, 14 seconds.

“It takes determination,” Benti said. “I knew he was strong, he was going to keep me down, and he was good at riding. I knew as soon as he deferred and he chose down, I knew I was going to ride him out.”

Newman’s Kyle Tunink (106) and Cael Sanders (138) each went a perfect two-for-two on their way to regional championships, each pinning their opponents. Tunink took 1:37 to dispatch his opponents, and Sanders took 3:03 to defeat his.

Brody Ivey (132) added a pin for the Comets, and then a 12-3 major decision against Seneca’s Tyler Draine in the finals.

“It’s really fun having other guys with you being champions,” Sanders said. “The energy in the room

gets put up higher, and we wrestle harder that way. It’s just a lot of fun.”

Ager kept his unbeaten season alive at 37-0, defeating Princeton’s Dallas Hill in the finals with a technical fall in 3:06. Meyers scored a 9-2 decision against Newman’s Mason Newman in his final, and Meenen defeated Seneca’s Jackson Beene with a similar score in his final.

“We counted on those guys to give us big points, and they were able to get a bunch of bonus,” Cox said. “We wrestled pretty much up to our seeds. We had 14 guys seeded, and any time we get them through, it’s great.”

Amboy did not advance any of its wrestlers, but both AFC and Newman each also advanced a thirdplace finisher.

“We had four in the finals, and we have five going in wrestlebacks,” Newman coach Daryl Dieterle said. “Unfortunately, we weren’t as strong as I’d hoped we’d be in the third-place matches, but we have a lot of first-year wrestlers, and they made a lot of first-year mistakes.”

“I was very proud and very happy with the way we came out,” AFC coach Chris Hager said. “In the first matches, the kids prepared real well, wrestled real well, and had a good first round.”

Rock Falls’s team will compete at the Rockridge Dual Team Sectional on Feb. 21 against Aurora Central Catholic winners of the regional on their home mats on Saturday. The Rockets are looking for their first appearance at team state in program history.

Elder believes the key to getting there is to trust the system that the Rockets have been putting in – hard work.

“That’s how we got to what we are,” Elder said, “and that’s what we’re going to keep doing.”

But first, the individual goals take precedence next week at Byron, which is the host to, traditionally, the toughest small-school sectional in Illinois.

“Next week’s the tell-tale,” Dieterle said. “It’s probably the toughest sectional in the state.”

For head coach Chris Bishop, it was sweet redemption. His team was in position to win a regional at Peoria Notre Dame in 2016, only to be overtaken

by Sterling and Geneseo in the medal round.

“Last year, going into the last round, we were ahead of everybody and let it go,” Bishop said. “This year, basically we said finish.

We’ve got to finish this out.

Everybody came in and did their job. That’s been our mantra all year – do your job – and the team did. Our fans came out and supported us, and we needed it right here in Geneseo.”

Nine Dukes, paced by champions Andrew Wolber and Ryan Troutman, advance to the Class 2A Sterling Sectional on Friday and Saturday. The Golden Warriors advanced seven wrestlers to the sectional level.

The 182-pound Wolber won his first high school tournament after picking up a 6-4 decision against Galesburg’s Tavian Cervantez in the finals. Wolber (34-4) got two back points early in the third period to break a 2-2 tie.

“He was standing up, and I tripped him,” Wolber said. “I went to pull him back for a suck-back, and I caught him on his back for two back points. I thought, ‘Well, I’ve got it here.’”

Cervantez quickly escaped to get to within 4-3, but Wolber scored a takedown with 37 seconds remaining to regain control.

Dixon’s second champ was the 285-pound Troutman, who earned a 5-3 win against Geneseo’s Sam Thomas. Thomas had won a 2-1 overtime decision against Troutman (26-2) in the regular season.

“It’s one of my most exciting wins of the year, probably my whole high school career – that, and when I made state my sophomore year,” Troutman said.

“I think this might have topped it.”

Troutman got on the board first with a takedown 40 seconds into the bout, and escaped at the beginning of the second period to go up 3-1. Thomas got to within 3-2 with an escape to start the third period.

With 20 seconds left in the third period, Troutman flung Thomas to his back and pounced, and the takedown gave him a 5-2 lead.

Troutman escaped danger the rest of the way, then gave coach Bishop a fireman’s carry to celebrate.

“He’s one of my biggest supporters, besides my family,” Troutman said. “I wouldn’t change the coaching staff that I have for anything.”

Rhodenbaugh (120), Colten Bishop (132) and Sebastian Quintana (152) each placed second for Dixon.

Rhodenbaugh (22-8) found himself on the receiving end of a cradle early in the third period against Canton’s Culton Ruey, putting him in a 4-0 hole at the time. He scored a reversal to get back to within 4-2 with a minute go, but the score stayed right there.

Bishop lost by the same 4-2 score to Freeport’s Darron Sims. Bishop trailed 2-1 after two periods, and had the option to choose down to begin the third, but instead chose neutral.

Sims then got a takedown with 1:12 to go to seize a 4-1 lead.

“I got in some good shots early in the match, so I thought I’d be able to take him down,” said Bishop, who had lost 6-0 to Sims earlier in the season. “It didn’t work out my way.”

man, made the finals before falling 9-5 to Sterling’s Turner Garcia. Garcia (29-9) scored a takedown in the final seconds to seal the win.

“I knew coming in he was going to be a tough opponent,” said Garcia, who edged Quintana 5-4 in the regular season. “Nothing was going to be easy this match.”

In the win-or-go-home third-place bouts, Dixon split eight bouts. Jacob Quantrell (106), Bryce Christiansen (138), Christian Hall (145) and Clint Schielein (160) won their bouts, while Todd Schlosser (113), Finn Brandon (170), Dylan Messer (195) and Jeffrey McKinney (220) wound up fourth.

“It was very important to get everybody to sectionals that we could,” Hall said.

“Getting third is a pretty good feeling.”

Sterling had three championships in Isaac Figueroa (126), Garcia (152) and Tyson Hall (170).

Figueroa (33-5) scored a takedown with 30 seconds left in first period against Peoria Notre Dame’s Leo Mushinsky. He then escaped 40 seconds into the second period to go up 3-0, and scored two back points in the third to win a 5-0 decision.

It was the first regional title for Figueroa, a senior who had lost to Geneseo

wrestlers in the finals 3 consecutive years.

“It was definitely on my list,” Figueroa said. “I haven’t won one before, so I had to win one today.”

Garcia led 6-2 after two periods against Dixon’s Quintana, then had to hang on at the end. He allowed a reversal, then was dinged for a stalling point, allowing Quintana to get to within 6-5 with 43 seconds to go.

“I was in some pretty bad positions, which I’ll have to clean up this week in practice for sectionals, but I just tried wearing him down,” Garcia said. “Thankfully I did enough at the end there.”

Hall (24-9) had lost to Freeport’s Matthew Chavers in the regular season, but won the bout that mattered most to claim his first regional title. Hall won the rematch 11-6.

“He had good cradles, and he was really squirmy the first time,” Hall said. “I just made sure to keep my pace, and tried to not get off-balance with him.”

Also for Sterling, Elias Edmondson (29-10) finished second at 160 pounds, losing by pin in 2:51 to Freeport’s Major Dedmond in the finals.

Andrew Rodriguez (113), J.J. Thompson (182) and Moises Lopez (195) each finished third to earn sectional berths.

Running past Rochelle Warriors overcome slow start to rally past Hubs

STERLING – The Golden Warriors trailed for much of the first half, but in the second came storming back.

Steals led to baskets, offensive rebounds led to more baskets, and Sterling strung together several runs that Rochelle could not answer in a 63-47 Warriors’ win on Saturday at Musgrove Fieldhouse.

The Hubs led 18-9 after one quarter, but the Warriors turned things around from that point on, outscoring Rochelle 54-29 over the final three quarters.

“We really adjusted to the intensity of the game,” Sterling senior Dimitric Young said.

“Some of the things didn’t go our way, but we pushed through. We kept going, staying on course.”

The first Sterling run came early in the second quarter as a Myles Williams steal and layup was followed by putbacks from Young and Reid Blackburn to cut the Rochelle lead to 18-17.

The steal by Williams was one of seven Sterling grabbed in the game, and one of 16 Rochelle turnovers.

The Golden Warriors (16-7, 6-1 NIB-12) turned those chances into points, with 16 points off turnovers.

“That’s just Sterling basketball, honestly,” Young said. “We just take pride in our defense, our athleticism, our quickness to get us buckets. We don’t like running sets, we just like running up and down, that’s us.”

Sterling eventually tied the game at 20-20 with 3:11 left in the second quarter thanks to a Young free throw, but Rochelle went on an 8-3 run of its own to close out the half.

Sterling trailed 31-25 early in the third before going on another run.

Ryan Blackburn and Micah Kendrick scored on drives to the basket, Kendrick’s putting Sterling ahead 32-31.

Rochelle never led again, and the Warriors extended the lead with another run.

Kendrick’s drive was the first of eight straight Sterling possessions resulting in points. Young then swiped a steal, feeding Juan Antonio Gomez for a 3-pointer. Young scored on another drive, Ryan Blackburn and Tyler Willman scored on putbacks, Kendrick knocked down a pair of free throws, and Ryan

By the time the run was over, Sterling enjoyed a 47-38 lead, which would grow even larger in the fourth quarter.

“It was just a tale of two halves,” Sterling coach Ryan Vasquez said.

“They made some shots and we didn’t get out and contest early on. We made some adjustments at halftime and the guys made some adjustments in closeouts.”

Rochelle (15-5, 6-3 NIB-12) was able to build its 18-9 lead in the first quarter on strong shooting. The Hubs knocked down four 3-pointers in the quarter and at one point scored on four possessions in a row.

“I thought we had a little bit of energy in the first quarter,” Hubs coach Tim Thompson said. “I felt from there on out, we just kind of had a clunker. We just didn’t shoot the ball well from there on out.”

Rochelle finished the game shooting 19-of-60 from the field (32 percent) and 8-of-28 from 3-point range (28 percent). Sterling’s early third-quarter run was helped by the Hubs missing seven shots in a row from the field.

Many of those missed 3s led to long rebounds, which led to Sterling getting run-outs and transition chances.

“If you want to play in transition, you have to make some shots,” Thompson said. “It’s kind of what we’ve had problems with the last few years is not making enough shots and other teams getting run-outs on us.”

Sterling held a 46-29 edge on the boards, with Ryan Blackburn leading with 12 rebounds. In the second half, Sterling grabbed six offensive boards to five Rochelle defensive rebounds.

“That’s just an emphasis that coach brought up before this game,” Ryan Blackburn said.

“He said we’ve got to start rebounding. It’s who wants it more.”

He also finished with 14 points and three steals.Young had 12 points and Micah Kendrick scored 11.

Trio of Mustangs take titles Polo’s Eubanks wins at 106; Bailey scored 29 to lead Dukes

The Morrison wrestling team had three champions and seven sectional qualifiers from the Class 1A Mercer County Regional held Saturday in Aledo.

Ryan Kennedy (106 pounds), Joe Eads (138) and Dylan Keller (160) each won titles for the Mustangs. Augustus Linke (120), Reilly Dolan (145) and Brandon Meier (285) were second, while Riley Wilkens (195) was third. They all advance to the Byron Sectional that begins on Friday.

Fulton had three champs in Tyler Fleetwood (120), Cole Grant (152) and Taylor Fleetwood (285). Tony Heintiz (138) was third.

For Erie-Prophetstown, Kerrick Cameron (138) and Garrett Passmore (160) were second, while Cameron Abell (106) was third.

1A Winnebago Regional: Polo had the lone

area champion in 106-pounder Connor Eubanks at the 1A Winnebago Regional.

Oregon’s Anthony Marchetti was second at 195 pounds, while Noah Paul (120), Chase Clark (132) and Caleb Mennen (170) were each third.

For West Carroll, Trapper Hartman (106) and Andrew Van Kampen (120) were second, while Nate Schultz (182) and Josh Anderson (285) were third.

Boys basketball Dixon 48, Stillman Valley 38: The Dukes won a

low-scoring BNC battle on the road behind Beau Bailey’s 29 points. The sophomore guard pulled down nine rebounds against the Cardinals as well. Payton Lawrence added seven points.

The Cardinals had just three scorers in the contest. Parker Abbott led with 18 points, while Matt Mandzen chipped in 15 points.

Polo 83, AFC 65: The Marcos led after every quarter on their way to an NUIC East home win over the Raiders.

Polo dominated the post. Reid Taylor drilled four 3-pointers as part of his 22-point effort, while Justin Young owned the low block with a seasonhigh 30 points.

Oregon’s Chase Clark wrestles at the Winnebago Regional on Saturday. He took third place at 132 pounds, beating Dakota’s Caleb Alber in the third-place match with a 5-2 decision.

Mendota 81, Oregon 61: The Hawks got off

to a fast start, as Jared Potorff hit his first seven shots of the game and had 19 points at the 10-minute mark.

However, the Trojans came back to take a 33-32 halftime lead, and outscored the Oregon 48-29 in the second half to cruise to a BNC victory at the Blackhawk Center.

Joe LaShonse stole the show with 37 points for Mendota. Cam Phalen added 18. Portorff finished with 19 points.

Cody Ebens chipped in 12 on three 3-pointers and a trio of foul shots, and Dalton Hermes finished with 11.

Eastland 58, West Carroll 44: The Cougars led

by 11 at halftime, but the Thunder cut the deficit to four after the third quarter.

Ethan Christians and Brighton Haverland made sure Eastland secured the NUIC West road win down the stretch. Christians scored eight of his 25 points in the fourth quarter, while Haverland added 19 in the win.

West Carroll’s Jacob Dunk scored four points in every quarter for his team-high 16 points.

Forreston 74, Amboy 66: Despite 25 points

from Justin Hart and 23 points from Jordan Hochstatter, the Clippers fell short at home in an NUIC East contest.

Brandon Schneiderman scored a game-high 26 points, going 6-for-6 from the charity stripe in the fourth quarter to preserve the win for Forreston.

Atlanta’s string of touchdowns on its opening drive ended at eight, though Devonta Freeman sprinted for 37 yards on the Falcons’ first offensive play. The drive was stunted when Ryan was sacked by Trey Flowers, New England’s leader in that category.

Then it was Atlanta’s D that went sacks-happy, getting two on the Patriots’ next drive in what would be a scoreless opening quarter.

Who expected that? Well, New England has not scored a point in the first 15 minutes in Brady’s seven Super Bowls.

It sure looked as if the Patriots would get on the board immediately in the second period as Brady and Edelman connected twice for 40 yards. But Blount’s fumble turned the momentum to the Falcons, who then took their biggest lead in a Super Bowl – yeah, we know, they have been here only twice – on Freeman’s 5-yard run to cap a quick 71-yard drive on which Jones came alive.

Jones showed why he is an AllPro receiver with a tough leaping catch over the middle for 19 yards, then got open on the sideline for 23. Freeman did the rest.

Before New England could catch its breath, Ryan had the Falcons up by 14. Using the no-huddle attack to perfection, he threw for 51 yards on a 52-yard drive, hitting Hooper with a pinpoint pass in the left side of the end zone.

Then Brady was victimized by his own poor decision, a rarity on the big stage. Atlanta was called for defensive holding three times on third downs to keep the drive alive. From the Falcons 23, under pressure Brady tried to squeeze a throw to Danny Amendola. Alford stepped in and sprinted, then glided 82 yards for the second-longest pick-6 in a Super Bowl – and Brady’s first.

Shockingly, it was 21-0.
