IMMIGRATION EXECUTIVE ORDER | ILLINOIS REACTION

Land of Lincoln, and sanctuary Proposals would help provide more protection to immigrants in Illinois CHICAGO (AP) – Illinois legislators are proposing to boost immigrant protections statewide in response to President Donald Trump’s executive orders on immigration, a move advocates say would essentially give the state “sanctuary” status. One proposal says schools, medical facil-

ities and places of worship don’t have to give access to federal immigration authorities or local law enforcement working on their behalf. Another proposal would limit cooperation and communication between local police and immigration authorities. “If there was ever a moment for things to

move, it is now when we’re seeing immigrant communities under unprecedented attacks,” said Mony Ruiz-Velasco, a leader of a suburban Chicago immigrant organizing group called PASO. IMMIGRANTS continued on A54

STERLING – One of the law’s most enduring symbols is Lady Justice, blindfolded to prejudice and weighing right and wrong in her scales, a tireless advocate of fairness. Not unlike the Sauk Valley’s own lady justice, Vicki Wright. Wright, 59, was elected in November to her second 10-year term as a judge for the Third District Appellate Court, one of seven judges in the district that includes Whiteside County among its 21-county region. It’s the capstone to a career in law that’s spanned decades and built an enduring legacy of fairness, something she first got a taste for at her father’s diner. WRIGHT continued on A54

DIXON – More than a millennium of knowledge buzzed throughout the Reagan Middle School cafeteria Saturday as 23 area teams competed in a game of wits. It’s not something you would normally think about in a large crowd, the sheer amount of collective information we all hold, of facts and figures, current events and who sings that one song that always seems to come on the radio.
