Oregon’s oldest playground will take on a new look, and a new role: A place where all ages can combine fitness and fun BY EARLEEN HINTON ehinton@shawmedia.com Shaw Media
OREGON – The Oregon Park District’s oldest playground, in Fairgrounds Park, is getting a major redesign that officials hope will entice residents of all ages to get out and exercise. Oregon’s park district is one of 18 chosen by the Illinois Park and Recreation Association and GameTime to receive a $48,000 playground grant, which will help pay for a $239,000 redesign that will blend fitness activities for adults with active play for children. The district’s capital replacement fund will pay for the rest. Work is expected to be done by June 1. “The whole purpose is trying to increase the amount of physical activity for park district residents,” said Erin Folk, the district’s executive director. The 10-acre park is on the north end of town, where the Ogle County Fairgrounds was before it moved west of town. The playground was installed in 1995. DIXON – There was a bit of deja vu for the Zoning Board on Thursday as it gave a second nod to the same project it approved in September, which was followed by the Lee County Board’s blessing in October. The Mendota Hills Wind Farm project once again received approval to decommission its fleet of turbines and replace about half of them with upgraded models. Leeward Renewable Energy, the Dallas-based company that owns the wind farm, returned to the board with a nearly identical petition asking for a special use permit to uproot 63 turbines and build 27 to 34 larger, more efficient towers. Sheriff: It’s more than a jail Simonton: Facility more than simply a place to put prisoners; it would be an all-in-one law enforcement center BY RACHEL RODGERS rrodgers@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5529 @rj_rodgers
DIXON – The Lee County sheriff is emphasizing that money raised from a half-percent sales tax increase would build more than a jail – it would mean a whole new law enforcement center, with a life span of at least 45 years. The proposed structure would be attached to the south side of the Lee County Courts Building and would house an 80-bed jail, the sheriff’s department, the coroner’s office and the 911 Center. “To have it all under one building, at an operational standpoint, it makes good sense,” Sheriff John Simonton said in a meeting Thursday with the Sauk Valley Media Editorial Board. County Administrator Theresa Wittenauer also was on hand. JAIL continued on A34
