STERLING – For troops serving thousands of miles away from family and friends, a sweet taste of home can make all the difference.

This past weekend, volunteers made that difference – and they made it out of cookie dough and kindness.

Gloria Williams and Pam Beyers enlisted a small army of community members to bake in full force during the weekend with the goal of assembling 250 packages filled with treats for service personnel.

“It’s for the troops – it’s great – it’s all for them,” Beyers said. “If they didn’t give us what they give us, we wouldn’t have our freedom.”

ROCK FALLS – It’s been a year of transition for Happy Tails Humane Society, and the animal shelter is ready to take the next step in its evolution.

The shelter has come a long way from its humble beginnings at a makeshift building in Sterling’s Hickory Hills area. Six years ago, the shelter moved to its current facility in the country at 1408 McNeil Road.

Happy Tails was challenged last year by allegations of violations of the Animal Welfare Act made by staff at Advanced Animal Care in Rock Falls.

After an inspection in October 2015, the Illinois Department of Agriculture closed the investigation, and the accusations were deemed unfounded.

The city’s levy for IMRF saw a large spike on a percentage basis, jumping from $40,000 to $72,479 this year. There isn’t much guesswork involved in the city’s contributions to that fund.

“IMRF tells us what the percentage contribution will be for the year – this year it’s 12.98 percent – and they give us a total employee rate based on the calendar year,” Dykhuizen said.

Last year’s contribution to IMRF was set at 11.34 percent.

Games were scratched too soon Millions in prizes avoided as tickets were pulled early; state says report is misleading CHICAGO (AP) – The Illinois Lottery collected hundreds of millions of dollars in instant ticket sales during a roughly 5-year period, but didn’t hand out many of the cash grand prizes, according to a newspaper report.

Lottery officials didn’t hand out 23 grand prizes for the largest scratch-off games starting from 2011 – more than 40 percent of what was designed into the games, The Chicago Tribune reported in its weekend editions.

One of those games, called The Good Life, offered $46 million in installments to two winners.

Tickets were $30 apiece and millions were sold, but the game ended before the top prize was awarded.

Longtime player Jim Jurewicz, a suburban Chicago retiree, was frustrated by the findings.

“A person’s playing that game hoping to win a big one,” he told the newspaper, “And maybe they played it for 6 months or longer.

And then all of a sudden the game’s gone with all these winners supposedly unclaimed.”

In its investigation, the newspaper cited public documents obtained through open record requests and interviews as it reviewed 138 instant games over 5 fiscal years. The newspaper zeroed in on 17 games with the

largest payouts from 2011, when private lottery manager Northstar Lottery Group took over, until June 2015. Winners have a year to claim prizes.

Northstar boosted the number of printed tickets, allowing them to offer bigger prizes.

Suppliers and the state received

more profit. But as sales of bigpayout tickets dipped, Northstar pushed to remove tickets from stores, often before grand prizes were awarded.

Lottery officials didn’t offer an explanation on why they ended certain games without paying prizes. They didn’t dispute the newspaper’s findings, but they said they were misleading or insignificant.

“Northstar consistently and unwaveringly made decisions for the benefit of the players and the Illinois Lottery and not its suppliers,” said a statement from International Game Technology, one of two companies that formed Northstar.

Northstar has been under scrutiny for other areas, including not meeting profit projections.

Illinois officials have been looking for a replacement manager.

The Tribune found that players could have collected another $32 million for all 138 games run

by Northstar.

One top elected leader says the findings are concerning. Senate President John Cullerton, a Chicago Democrat, said if players aren’t treated fairly, they might stop playing. That could mean less revenue for the cashstrapped state.

ROCK FALLS – The committee tasked with planning the city’s 150th jubilee celebration will meet Tuesday.

The Rock Falls Sesquicentennial Committee will gather at 6 p.m. in council chambers at City Hall, 603 W. 10th St. in Rock Falls.

Items on the agenda include discussions about marketing materials, outlining the week’s events, and updates from committee members.

The bulk of the celebration will be scheduled during the week of July 29 through Aug. 6 next year. The city hopes to have a planned riverfront amphitheater completed on East Second Street in time for the summer event.

Foundation work on the venue has been done, and the work will be picked up again in the spring.

The city’s Tourism Department, with the council’s approval, has made a $20,000 contribution to costs of the sesquicentennial events.

The committee is scheduled to meet again at 6 p.m. Jan. 10 in council chambers.

OBITUARIES FUNERAL SERVICES FOR THE WEEK

Robert E. ‘Bob’ Rude ROCKFORD – Robert E. “Bob” Rude, 73, of Rockford, was called home to be with Jesus on Friday, Dec. 9, 2016, at SwedishAmerican Hospital in Rockford.

He was born Oct. 5, 1943, in Sterling, to Ethel L. (Edwards) Rude and Olen S. Rude. In his youth, he spent many hours playing football, bicycling, and hanging out at the home of Sherman and Theda Insley. He graduated in 1964 from Rock Falls High School. Bob married Barbara A. Kirksey on July 4, 1964, in Rock Falls.

In June of 1964, he started his job at Excelsior Inc. in Rockford in the hydraulics department. Always a hard worker, he was quickly promoted to foreman of his department. He worked there for 45 years until his retirement from his position as Foreman of Inspection in 2009. Bob was devoted to his family and loved spending time with his wife and children, Thomas, Beth, Joseph, and Philip. He was an exceptional grandpa who adored his grandchildren, Stephen, Halle, Lily, Caden, Brooke, and Elliott, and his great-grandsons, Mason and Robert. Bob was a bornagain Christian and baptized in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

He delighted in fellowship with like-faith believers and looked forward to the Quote of the Day on branham. org. On any given day, he could be found listening to Christian music, or his favorite countryWestern artist, Johnny Cash, and watching old black-and-white movies. He enjoyed watching football games and spending quality time with his family. He held a love for all of God’s creatures, especially his grand-dog, Champ. He regularly fed the squir-

rels and the birds outside his home. Bob was a beloved man of God whose kindness and gentle ways will be missed greatly by all who knew him.

He is survived by his sweetheart of 52 years, Barbara; and his greatest accomplishments – his children, Thomas (Sandy) Rude, Beth (Jonathan) Householder, Joseph (Chenin) Rude, and Philip (Amanda) Rude; his grandchildren, Stephen (Brooke) Rude, Halle Householder, Lily Householder, Caden Nimtz, Brooke Rude, and Elliott Rude; and great-grandsons, Mason Saettele and Robert Rude; brothers, Raymond (Martha) Edwards and Ronald Rude; several special cousins, nieces, and nephews; his grand-dog, Champ; and his grandcat, Muffin.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Juanita Burall; and brothers, Thomas O. Rude and Donald Rude.

Ora V. Lanning ROCK FALLS – Ora V. “Ginny” Lanning, 93, of Rock Falls, died Friday, Dec. 9, 2016, at Rock Falls Rehabilitation & Health Care Center.

Ora was born Dec. 21, 1922, in Stanardsville, Virginia, the daughter of Shergard and Eva (Marshall) Harlow. She married Eugene Rosene.

She later married Alva Lanning on Jan. 17, 1961, in Beloit, Wisconsin. Alva preceded her in death on May 20, 2010. Ora worked for many health care facilities throughout her life.

She was a member of Broadway United Methodist Church in Sterling.

Survivors include her daughter, Joyce Frank (Kenneth Sr.) Miensma of Rock Falls; two

grandchildren, Janna Bottoms of Fairfield, Texas, and Jaye (Beth Carolan) Frank of Dixon; five greatgrandchildren; five great-greatgrandchildren; two brothers, Jake (Evelyn) Harlow of Stanardsville and Odell (Janette) Harlow of Ruckersville, Virginia; and many nieces and nephews.

She also was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, and eight brothers.

She was born Nov. 26, 1919, in Amboy, the daughter of Frank and Fannie (Mule) Merlo. She was a secretary for USF&G in Dixon, and then a legal secretary for the Winnebago County States Attorney’s Office.

Alice was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Dixon.

Alice married LeRoy G. Finn on Sept. 13, 1941, at Camp Polk, Louisiana. He preceded her in death on March 3, 1982.

Cops expect Trump to get them more military gear HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) – If president-elect Donald Trump keeps his promise, surplus military grenade launchers, bayonets, tracked armored vehicles and high-powered firearms and ammunition will once again be available to state and local U.S. police departments.

National police organizations say they’ll hold Trump to that promise.

President Barack Obama issued an executive order restricting that access in 2015 amid an outcry over police use of armored vehicles and other war-fighting gear to confront protesters in Ferguson, Mis-

souri, after the fatal shooting of Michael Brown. Since then, federal officials have recalled more than 1,800 items, which have been destroyed through target practice or otherwise disposed of, officials say.

But state and local police organizations have protested, insisting that military-style vehicles and gear help protect officers’ lives and public safety – for example, a privately manufactured, tracked armored vehicle played a key role in the police response to the mass shooting at a county government building in San Bernardino, California, in December 2015.

During his campaign, Trump sided with the police. In September, he promised to rescind the executive order in a written response to a Fraternal Order of Police questionnaire that helped him win an endorsement from the organization of rank-and-file officers.

The Trump transition team did not respond to questions from The Associated Press about the executive order.

Obama’s order was triggered partly by police use of military-style gear and vehicles in response to the 2014 unrest in Ferguson. The order prohibited the federal government

from providing grenade launchers, bayonets, tracked armored vehicles, weaponized aircraft and vehicles, and firearms and ammunition of .50-caliber or greater to state and local police agencies.

Peter Kraska, a professor at Eastern Kentucky University’s School of Justice Studies who has studied the militarization of police, said Obama’s executive order has had little effect because there was relatively little demand for the prohibited items to begin with.

“It was more symbolic politics than anything substantive,” he said.

Groups on both ends of the political spectrum have expressed concern about police militarization, from civil-rights organizations such as the NAACP and ACLU to the libertarian Cato Institute.

The Charles Koch Institute, founded by its conservative billionaire namesake, considers the restrictions under Obama’s executive order “a decent start,” said William Ruger, vice president of policy and research.

“We don’t want local police departments to be incentivized to get the types of equipment that in most cases are a better fit for the war zone,” he said.

Cooks crank out nearly 3,800 cookies TREATS

After 8 hours of baking on Saturday and collecting donated ingredients and homemade sweets, they were able to meet their goal – and then some, filling 300 containers for troops with plenty left over to give to the Illinois National Guard’s 1644th Transportation Company in Rock Falls.

“We must have done at least 3,600 to 3,800 cookies,” said Beyers, who contributed about 1,000 cookies to the cause.

The boxes of goodies will be shipped to a chaplain at the Francis E. Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne, Wyoming, where they will then be sent off to soldiers overseas.

The Cookies for Troops project came about a few months ago when Williams’ son, Anthony, a Tech Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force whose service spans more than a decade, was on leave following a deployment to Syria.

“He said they have a lot of guys who can’t come home for Christmas and if there was anything we could do to help,” Williams said.

Donations and volunteers flooded into the Sterling Moose Lodge, including a business that donated 170 pounds of flour and sugar and a woman from Dubuque, Iowa, who baked

“It’s taken a life of its own,” Williams said. “I wouldn’t have expected this in my wildest dreams.”

The holiday treats will be coupled with cards made by students at Lincoln Elementary School carrying messages of “Thanks for saving and serving,” “Let a certain star guide your way” and “If I could buy you a plane ticket home, I would.”

“It’s unbelievable; it’s just amazing to me,” Beyers said. “We’ve had a lot

of fun, and I would do it again in a heartbeat.”

Because of the project’s success, the two are thinking of continuing it next year and possibly aiming to fill 500 containers for troops.

The project was one of several that Williams and her husband, Vinus, have been involved with over the years including sending 6,000 books for troops in the Middle East and 3,000 supplies, such as pens, pencils, paper and scissors, for English teachers in Afghanistan.

Candlelight Inn owner Matt Prescott donated containers for the project, and other contributions came from Kroger, Walmart, County Market and dozens of community members.

Troops will each have a variety of sweets, including different types of cookies, caramel, fudge, chocolate-covered pretzel sticks and snack mix.

“I just think it will bring a smile to their faces,” Williams said. “I know it will. It’s a very small way to say ‘thank you.’”

Senators: Don’t let voting manipulation become partisan issue WASHINGTON – As President-elect Donald Trump dismissed intelligence reports about Russian interference in the presidential election as “ridiculous,” calls for a government investigation from lawmakers, including some in his own party, grew louder Sunday.

In a rare joint statement Sunday, four high-profile Republican and Democratic senators called for a government investigation into the matter and urged colleagues not to allow the issue to become partisan.

“Recent reports of Russian interference in our election should alarm every American,” read a statement from Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman John McCain, R-Arizona; committee member Lindsey Graham, R-South Carolina.; incoming Senate Minority Leader leader Charles E. Schumer, D-New York.; and Armed Services Committee ranking member Jack Reed, D-Rhode Island. “Democrats and Republicans must work together, and across the jurisdictional lines of the Congress, to examine these recent incidents thoroughly and devise comprehensive solutions to deter and

defend against further cyberattacks.”

The statement came in the aftermath of a Washington Post report Friday that a secret CIA analysis found that the Russian government’s hacking of Democratic Party emails this year was a deliberate effort to damage Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton and boost Trump’s chances.

The Trump transition team responded by mockingly comparing the CIA assessment to the agency’s historic misjudgment on Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction. On “Fox News Sunday,” Trump called the assessment “ridiculous,” and suggested it was an excuse Democrats put forward to rationalize their loss.

Democrats insist they only want to get to the bottom of what could be Russia’s unprecedented interference in a U.S. presidential election.

“The reason that this Russian campaign was so phenomenally successful is that you have the rare specter of a presidential candidate and president-elect willing to give the Russians cover,” Rep. Adam Schiff, D-California, the ranking Democrat on the House Select Intelligence Committee, said Sunday.

The FBI notified the Illinois Republican Party in June that some of its email accounts might have been hacked, but party officials were not told that it was part of a wide-ranging federal investigation of Russian activity in the nation’s political system, the state GOP’s executive director said Sunday.

Nick Klitzing said the state GOP on its own found 18 of its emails on the website DCLeaks. com. The New York Times reported the website was an outlet that U.S. intelligence officials and private cybersecurity companies believe was created by a unit controlled by the GRU, Russia’s military intelligence agency.

Klitzing said FBI agents raised questions about emails involving the state GOP accounts during their visit. The four email accounts involved were inactive or rarely used, and the hacked emails dated to 2015, long before the 2016 contests for president and Illinois offices, Klitzing said.

A review of the emails provided by the state GOP shows the messages were largely rudimentary in nature.

The disclosure of the hacked email accounts comes amid reports by the Times and Washington Post that assessments

by American intelligence agencies, including the CIA, concluded that Russia acted to influence the 2016

presidential election in favor of Republican President-elect Donald Trump and to hurt Democrat Hillary Clinton’s chances.

The disclosure by the Illinois Republicans marks the second time that part of the state’s political system was hacked through what is considered to be foreign involvement.

In June, information involving as many as 90,000 Illinois voters was hacked in a 1-month cyberattack of potential foreign origin on the State Board of Elections. Board officials restated that no files of registered voters were erased or modified, and that no voting history information or voter signature images were captured.

WASHINGTON – The half of America that has not been bamboozled by Donald Trump’s promises to pull miracles out of his orange bouffant are puzzled by his refusal to attend national security briefings.

You’d think a 70-year-old man without government experience or knowledge of world affairs would be intrigued to learn the nation’s secrets and the rationales for its foreign policy decisions.

Soon, after all, President-elect Trump will be responsible for continuing those decisions or revoking them.

But instead of studying up, it’s clear he intends to rely on retired Army Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, who will be national security adviser, typically the first aide to see the president in the morning and last to see him at night. Yes, the same general who retweeted fake news stories and longdebunked conspiracy theories and whose son went so far over the line doing the same thing that he was ousted last week from Trump’s transition team.

The elder Flynn has recirculated bogus, nonsensical accusations, such as Hillary Clinton being involved in child sex trafficking and secretly warring against the Catholic Church. By the way, the general does not need Senate confirmation.

When it comes to the vital post of secretary of state, Trump’s interviewing of candidates has been all over the map. Does he even know what he wants in such a diplomat? Trump seems to relish making people jump through hoops before humiliating them.

ONE THING THE world does have more certainty about is that Trump broke with the decades-old One China policy by taking a phone call from Taiwan’s new president, infuriating China, which is likely to think twice before helping us contain North Korea’s nuclear ambitions.

Ditto Trump’s White House invitation to the Philippines’ president, who has insulted President Barack Obama and has ordered the killings of thousands of people in his homeland.

And the same again for making nice with Pakistan, a nuclear power that hid Osama bin Laden.

Trump’s overture infuriated India, another nuclear power.

Is Trump planning megadeals with Taiwan? He has openly speculated about doing hotel deals there, and many fat-cat Republicans have been longing for normalized relations.

Russia? Trump still refuses to believe U.S. intelligence agencies that say Russia – in other words, Vladimir Putin – intentionally interfered in the election.

Just how many potential conflicts of interest are there?

Trump announced that Japan’s richest man will invest $50 billion in the United States, with much of the money actually coming from Saudi Arabia.

It’s all about profit.

We taxpayers are paying Trump to sleep in his own bed at night. We pay for his office space. We pay for the fuel for his plane and his motorcades.

DUMPING SOME stock was peanuts for him.

What about his business empire? No matter what he says, money is his bottom line.

When Trump’s daughter Ivanka joined him for a meeting with the Japanese prime minister, she was also working out a lucrative deal for a new business in Japan.

That’s not to mention that Trump owes huge sums of money to the largest German bank and the Bank of China, both of which want favors.

Trump seems gleeful that U.S. allies are in panic mode trying to figure out what his intentions are.

Hurrah, shout his supporters, who think it’s fine for their populist idol to blow up years of carefully crafted American foreign policy.

We’re supposed to have one president at a time.

Trump could at least wait until he’s inaugurated to throw bombs.

We also now know Trump wants to privatize government programs such as Medicare. Who would benefit? His rich friends?

Behind the Trump bluster is a shrewd businessman who will profit from the presidency even though that’s unconstitutional.

Fellow citizens, three words: Follow the money.

And while you’re at it, be vigilant. Very vigilant.

A democracy can become an oligarchy in a flash.

Ignoring intelligence briefings is a start.

Lonely man should reach out to others Dear Abby, I became estranged from my family after I came out as gay. I am OK with it and don’t really care anymore.

The problem is, besides having no family, I have no friends either.

I always had difficulty making friends. I’m an introvert and was bullied at school, so I found it more comfortable just hanging out at home by myself.

I have come to accept the absence of friends as my reality. I try to do fun things by myself, like seeing movies and eating out at restaurants, but the holiday season is hard to bear.

Trump: I have a big stake in ‘Apprentice,’ but will devote ‘zero time’ to it NEW YORK – Presidentelect Donald Trump said he won’t spend any time working on the new version of the TV reality show he starred in before seeking office, although he will be paid and credited as an executive producer.

“I have NOTHING to do with The Apprentice except

for fact that I conceived it with Mark B & have a big stake in it,” Trump posted on Twitter, referring to producer Mark Burnett. “Will devote ZERO TIME!” A follow-up post said reports by CNN that Trump would be working on the show while president, even part time, “are ridiculous &

untrue – FAKE NEWS!” The arrangement, unusual for a sitting president, could subject Trump to criticism from watchdogs on the lookout for conflicts of interest.

“Suppose the show gets poor ratings?” said Robert Stern, former general counsel for the California Fair Political Practices Commis-

sion. “Will NBC be reluctant to cancel the show since it does not want to offend the president, his Federal Communications Commission or other agencies that regulate the company?”

On Friday, Trump’s campaign manager and transition adviser, Kellyanne Conway, raised the possibility

that Trump could work on the show in his “spare time,” comparing it to President Barack Obama’s frequent weekend golf outings.

A book to help bidding judgment

Neil Kimelman from Canada has just completed his trilogy about bidding with “The Right Bid at the Right Time” (Master Point Press). The book contains more than 80 tough bidding problems, both constructive and competitive. After the reader decides what he would do, Kimelman analyzes the pros and cons of each possible call, sometimes gives the original full deal and has “lessons to learn.” In general, the advice is sound, but a few times he makes debatable recommendations.

I found one deal where he said that a penalty double of three spades led to minus 730. He did not describe the play, though, because declarer had a two-way guess for the club jack that he must

have gotten right. If either defender had held the club 10, they would have been plus 200 for a nice score. (To be honest, the setting was a team game, not a pair event, when a close double into

game should be avoided.

In today’s deal, taken from a team event, what should North rebid over one notrump?

While you are considering that, “Out of Hand, Out of Mind” by Bill Buttle (Master Point Press) is a book containing 141 color cartoons with bridge themes, some funnier than others, of course.

Back to the deal, North ought to rebid three diamonds (although three notrump is feasible). This says that North is trying to get to three no-trump, but would like South to have some help in the suit and, preferably, hearts well held – as he does here. Shelter board puts a focus on the business end of nonprofit HAPPY TAILS

“It makes a big difference having more members on the new board,” Suarez said. “You need diversity of skills and opinions to run any organization.”

Suarez said the new board brings great passion for the animals, but the skills mix is heavily weighted toward business and education.

Suarez is a retired area schools administrator, and the board now has a technology expert, Charles Kinsella, who retired from his job as technology director for the Dixon school district.

“Education will be an important part of our mission, especially regarding spay and neuter, because we have a big feral cat problem in the area,” Suarez said.

Suarez said keeping animals updated on vaccines, and other cornerstones of responsible pet ownership will all be points of emphasis in the shelter’s community outreach efforts.

A big part of the educa-

tional component is the shelter’s Pet Wellness Clinic. The clinic operates Mondays and Thursdays to help keep pets healthy and in their homes.

“Caring for pets can be difficult financially, so we want to help keep them with their owners at a very reasonable cost,” Suarez said.

Timothy Dayton, a mobile veterinarian well known throughout the area, heads up the clinic.

When she is home from college, Rock Falls native Allie Furr helps out at the clinic.

“Allie is a former Happy Tails employee who is studying veterinary medicine,” Suarez said. “It is our hope to have her on board as a vet once she graduates.”

Marc Razo provides some continuity on the board, serving as vice president. An employee of CGH Medical Center, Suarez says Razo brings medical knowledge that is indispensable to the shelter setting.

John Mowery is another familiar face to frequent visitors to Happy Tails.

mals as possible, but as with any nonprofit, we can only do what our budget allows,” Suarez said.

John Novak Jr., the board’s resident financial expert, is there to dissect the budget and help the shelter maximize its resources.

Local businessman Jim Gabler recently joined the

board. Suarez said Gabler has a wealth of connections in the community that should help the shelter in several aspects of its operations.

Suarez said Gabler has worked to strengthen the shelter’s ties with local government, churches, and businesses.

Beth Uhrich, an attorney at Pignatelli & Associates in Rock Falls, is the most recent addition to the board, enabling the shelter to directly deal with any legal issues that arise.

The first person visitors are now likely to see when they walk through the shelter’s front door is Kaleo Makaimoku.

Makaimoku is the new shelter manager, taking the baton from Donald Czyzyk, who resigned to focus on his many local business interests.

Makaimoku started at the shelter in midJuly. Her husband’s job brought them to Sterling in April.

The new manager said the job is an exciting outlet for her lifelong love of animals.

“No 2 days are the same here, and that’s why it’s

so exciting,” Makaimoku said. “The animals all have such different personalities, and you never stop learning.”

While the shelter can always use more volunteers, she said her base is amazing.

“We couldn’t run without our volunteers,” Makaimoku said. “They are so passionate and giving of themselves, and most have been here for many years.”

Suarez said Czyzyk is one of many individuals who have left a strong foundation from which the board can continue to build.

“The animals were well cared for while Donald was here, and the new board is grateful that we’ll be carrying on the excellent work done by all of the past board members, staff, and volunteers,” Suarez said.

The shelter continues to increase the number of forever homes it provides for animals. In 2014, about 340 animals were adopted, 450 found homes last year, and the shelter still hopes to hit its goal of 550 this year.

STERLING – Sterling senior Andrew Rodriguez had yet to win a tournament in his high school career ... until Saturday.

Rodriguez persevered through a rough third period to take top honors at 113 pounds at the 39th annual Carson DeJarnatt Invitational at Musgrove Fieldhouse in Sterling.

Rodriguez and Isaac Figueroa (126) won their weight classes to help the Golden Warriors finish third in the team standings with 167 points. A pair of Iowa teams, Clinton and DeWitt, claimed the top two spots with 237 and 182 points, respectively.

Dixon finished fourth as a team with 150 points, and had one champ in 132-pounder Colten Bishop.

Rodriguez (10-2) was in control of the 113-pound

title bout against Rockford Guilford’s Riley Stonitsch with a second-period escape, takedown and 3-point nearfall to seize a 6-0 lead.

Stonitsch, however, rallied in the third period with a reversal, then a 3-point nearfall of his own with 26 seconds to go. Rodriguez stayed out of danger the rest of the match, however, to nab the win.

“That third period, that was rough,” Rodriguez said. “There shouldn’t have been back points, but I had to keep wrestling, and that’s what I did. I didn’t give up the fall.”

For Rodriguez, it was nice to get paid. He began the season around 126 pounds, but through better eating habits and solid work in the wrestling room, he’s now down to 113 and in better shape to compete.

ROCK FALLS – For all of the struggles that the Rock Falls boys basketball program has had in the past few years, could their 85-65 win Saturday over Princeton be the turning point?

Brad Bickett hopes so. The Rockets coach has had to deal with getting his players to buy into a system that, after Saturday, has delivered 400 wins as a head coach.

The Rockets (3-4) pushed their way from a tight two-point halftime advantage to outscoring the Tigers 49-31 in the second half.

Dylan Leaf arrived just in time to take part in Bickett’s milestone win. Leaf injured his fibia during a sophomore football game and was on crutches for about a month. Leaf was cleared to play Saturday, and he was the second man off the bench.

Leaf hit 3s in each quarter and poured in 23 points in his return.

“There’s no better feeling than being out on that floor with your teammates, getting the W on your home floor,” Leaf said. “We were moving the ball well, and our shots were falling.”

Former Texas coach Charlie Strong has been hired by South Florida, returning to a conference and a region where he has deep roots and a history of success.

Strong was fired the day after coaching his final game with the Longhorns last month, and it took him 3 weeks to land another job. He will replace Willie Taggart, who left USF to become coach at Oregon just a few days ago.

The Bulls went 10-2 this season and finished second in the American Athletic Conference East division to league champion Temple.

Strong is coming off a second straight 5-7 season at Texas. He was 16-21 in three seasons with the Longhorns after replacing Mack Brown. Before going to Texas, Strong was 37-15 in four seasons (2010-13) at Louisville.

Two Louisville players shot A shooting in the early morning hours on Sunday near the campus of the University of Louisville reportedly injured three people, potentially including two football players.

According to a report from WHAS, the two players linked to the shooting incident are linebacker James Hearns and Henry Famurewa. The third victim is also a Louisville student.

According to the report, one man and one woman were taken to a nearby hospital by ambulance to be treated for gunshot wounds.

Soon after that, a third gunshot victim arrived at Jewish Hospital. It is believed all three are connected to the same incident, although the details surrounding the incident are largely unknown at this time. All three injuries were considered non-life threatening in nature.

Louisville officials are traveling due to Lamar Jackson and his Heisman Trophy win, so no comment has been made from the athletics department about the situation at this time.

Tannehill could be done for season The Miami Dolphins fear that quarterback Ryan Tannehill suffered an injury to the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during Sunday’s 26-23 win over the Arizona Cardinals.

An ACL injury would likely end Tannehill’s season with three games remaining as the Dolphins aim for their first playoff berth since 2008.

Tannehill went down with 1:19 left in the third quarter after taking a low hit from Cardinals defensive tackle Calais Campbell. Coach Adam Gase said after the game that Tannehill will undergo further tests today.

“It doesn’t look good,” Gase said.

ROCK FALLS – Princeton had trouble finding any opening in the Rock Falls girls basketball team’s man-to-man defense.

Rock Falls had little trouble finding ways to attack the Tigers’ zone.

The Rockets were able to jump out quickly and watch the lead grow and grow into an 82-19 win over the Tigers on Saturday at Tabor Gym. Princeton turned the ball over 23 times in the game and shot 8-for-50 from the field (16 percent), and even that shooting percentage was bolstered somewhat by shooting 6-for15 in the fourth quarter. After three quarters, Princeton was shooting 2-for-35 from the field (6 percent) and trailed 66-7.

“We decided to get on them, always pressure them,” Rockets guard Abbee Sigel said. “We had a goal of having a lot of steals, and that’s what we did.”

Rock Falls (7-1) jumped out to a 10-0 lead with baskets in the paint from five different players – Molly Buck, Kenzie Olson, Olivia Babcock, Bailey Bickett, and Nadia Poff. The Rockets led 19-2 after one quarter, and held the Tigers without a field goal in the second until Anna Murray hit a 3-pointer with 6:30 left to make it 23-5.

Rock Falls hit 32 of 65 shots from the field, with Poff hitting 8 of 11. She finished with 19 points, 15 of them in the second half.

“Rock Falls is a very good basketball team,” Princeton coach Tiffany Gonigam said. “We were battling a lot of difficulties right now with sickness and different things. No excuses. We just weren’t ready to play today.”

Rock Falls’ edge in the paint extended to its

offense, where backdoor cuts were open most of the game.

“We’re usually looking for a back-door,” Sigel said. “If their defense is tight on us, we try to look back-door and get the easy layup.”

The 82 points are the most the Rockets have scored in any game since beating Rockford Christian 82-10 last season.

t Bickett is happy to have one of his point guards back and fully functioning in time for next week’s Colmone Classic at Hall.

“I love that kid,” Bickett said.

“He is just fun to coach. He’s been going through practices full-go for about the past week, and in-and-out of contact for the past couple of weeks. We’ve tried to make the practices difficult for him to see how he would respond, and see when we would be ready for a game situation.”

“That’s a great accomplishment for Coach, and a good win against a good team,” Leaf said.

“A lot of times we haven’t been buying into him, but when we buy into him and listen to what he says, he knows what he’s talking about. He’s been down to the state tournament, and he knows what he’s doing.”

Logan Pillars led Rock Falls with 24 points, and hit back-to-back 3s to put the Rockets up 31-28 with 4:10 left in the first half.

When Princeton tied the game at 42, Pillars hit his fifth 3 to go up 45-42. Rock Falls never looked back after that, scoring 28 points in the fourth quarter.

“We had an embarrassing loss against Sterling [on Tuesday], and that might have been the best thing for us,” Bickett said. “Who knows, as we look back, that may be a turning point. We’ve got to continue to grow, and we can’t get too overconfident by any means. We’ll keep level-headed and just continue to work hard.”

“Rock Falls is a good team and is well-coached,” Princeton coach Michael Fredericks said. “They played tough. They made a lot of shots. We struggled at times to get defensive stops, and we gave up 85 points. You don’t win a lot of high school games giving up that many points.”

Bickett is 400-283 as a head coach. The 1986 Ohio graduate began his career at Buda Western in 1990, and was named Bureau Valley’s first coach when the school consolidated with Manlius, Walnut, and Wyanet to form BV in

1995. Bickett won 287 games as the Storm’s coach, and won three consecutive third-place trophies at the state tournament from 2000-02.

He stepped down from BV in 2010 and took 2 years off before coming to Rock Falls, where he resides and where his wife, Jolene, works.

“I coach because I had parents that were very supportive of me and the game of basketball, looked out for me, and got me involved in the game,” Bickett said. “My high school coaches, my college coaches, are the reason why I continue to coach. I sat out 2 years, and I missed it just too much. Just going to a game for me wasn’t enough, I needed to be on the sideline and be passionate about it.

“It’s been tough trying to do it the way we want to do it at Rock Falls, but I’m thankful that we’re playing our best basketball in quite a while. I just want us to continue to get better.”

Oregon bowlers win at LP Rocket wrestlers take 2nd Duchesses, Missiles, Cougars all win in Polo

The Oregon girls bowling team won the LaSalle-Peru Cavalier Classic on Saturday, rolling away with 5,500 pins. Mendota was in second place with 5,003.

Three Hawks were in the top six, with Ali Sheidecker rolling a 1,168 series and a high game of 233 to claim third as an individual.

Abi Scheidecker and Victoria Barnhart had matching series of 1,118. Barnhart’s high game was a 226, while Abi Scheidecker’s high game was 213.

Dixon 3rd at UT: The Duchesses took third at the United Township Panther Invitational in East Moline with a score of 5,349.

Moline won the event with a 5,637. Sterling took seventh with 4,462.

Melissa Bates led Dixon with a 1,167 series and a high game of 225.

Jasmynne Brinkmeyer had Sterling’s top series with a 979. Zoey Paone had the high game with a 232.

Eastland 57, Prophetstown 24: The Cougars

jumped out a 23-7 lead after the first quarter and never looked back against the Prophets at the Polo tournament.

Makenzie Fink and Lydia Coatney led Eastland with 11 points, and Erin Henze added 10.

Courtney Pierceson led Prophetstown with 11 points.

Steamers swept: The Fulton girls basketball team lost twice on the openiong day of the Pearl City tournament, falling 58-41 to River RidgeScales Mound, and 56-42 to the host Wolves.

Fulton led Pearl City 18-15 after one quarter, but scored just seven points in the second quarter and four in the third as the Wolves pulled ahead.

Faith Kennedy hit three 3-pointers and led the Steamers with 14 points.

Jordan Price had 13 against River Ridge-Scales Mound, while Abby Willging added 10.

Sterling’s most dominant wrestler was Figueroa, who pinned two of three opponents on the day and was named the tournament’s outstanding wrestler for the lower weights (106-145).

Figueroa (13-0) needed just 1 minute, 38 seconds to finish off Clinton’s Isaac Larkin in the finals. He scored a takedown 38 seconds into the bout, and a minute later, won by pin.

“I got the takedown with a fireman, but I pinched the elbow,” said Figueroa, a senior who also won a DeJarnatt title as a sophomore. “I kept burying the elbow, and I came all the way around to finish it with a butcher. That’s how I ended up finishing the match, catching him on his back.”

Sterling had three more wrestlers reach the finals and earn second-place medals in Kolten Smith (106), Noah Garcia (132) and Elias Edmondson (160).

Smith (6-3), who pinned his first two opponents, never got much of anything going in losing to fellow freshman Malakye Rodriguez of Belvidere North 10-2.

Edmondson dug himself an early 5-0 hole and was nearly pinned early in his championship bout against Clinton’s Clem Butler.

Comets, Missiles, Marcos all win at Forreston

Paced by individual champs Riley Dowd, Rollie Elder and Niles Ager, the Rock Falls wrestling team finished second at the 12-team Jim Boyd Invitational on Saturday in Port Byron.

Sherrard won the event with 211.5 points, while the Rockets were at 198.

Rounding out the top five were Knoxville (157), Riverdale (146) and Seneca (123).

Dowd won a title at 113 pounds, Elder won at 152, and Ager won at 195.

Second-place finishers included Adam Meenen at 126, Noah Schueler at 145, Tyler Meyers at 170, Brodey Mulvaney at 182, and Browdie Benti at 220. Meenen was assessed a flagrant misconduct penalty, costing the Rockets 19 points off their total.

Lonnie Gribbons was third at 160 for Rock Falls.

Polo was seventh as a team with 59 points.

Connor Eubanks was third at 106 pounds for the Marcos.

E-P 2nd at Plano: Garrett Passmore won the title at 160 pounds to lead Erie-Prophetstown to second place at the 20-team Reaper Classic in Plano.

Gibson City-MelvinSibley won the event with 156.5 points, just ahead of the Panthers, who had 153. Aurora Christian (144), Rich South (138) and Sandwich (130.5) rounded out the top five.

Kerrick Cameron (138) and Calvin Naftzger (152) finished second for E-P, while Mat Garrison (170) and Noah Friedrichsen (285) were third.

Newman was eighth as a team with 94 points.

The Comets had two champions in Brody Ivey (132) and Cael Sanders (138), while Kyle Tunink (106) was third.

Thunder 5th in Iowa:

West Carroll finished fifth with 104 points, while Fulton was sixth with 98 at the 12-team North Cedar (Iowa) tournament.

The Thunder had two champions in Jacob Casey (132) and Kaleb Hartman (160). Josh Anderson (285) was third.

For the Steamers, Cole Grant won the 170pound title, while Tyler Fleetwood (120) and Taylor Fleetwood (285) were second.

Garcia and Dixon’s Bishop engaged in a nip-andtuck battle in the 132pound final.

Bishop (7-2) scored a takedown with 32 seconds left in the first period, only to have Garcia (6-1) respond with a reversal 20 seconds later. The scored stayed at 2-2 through the end of regulation time as neither wrestler – Garcia in the second period and Bishop in the third – was able to escape from the down position.

“The goal was to get one, at least, but I was pretty wore out,” Bishop said.

In overtime, Bishop was able to score a takedown with 14 seconds remaining and secure a 4-2 victory. There was some doubt on the Sterling end whether complete control was established, but the decision stood.

“I think it was a double-leg takedown,” Bishop said. “We went to a scramble and I got him to

his back – that’s why I got the two.”

Bishop received an award for the fastest pin of the tournament. He finished off Rochelle’s Johnathon Drilling in a mere 13 seconds in a firstround bout.

Dixon also had three wrestlers place second in Andrew Wolber (182), Dylan Messer (195) and Ryan Troutman (285).

Wolber (10-1) engaged in a back-and-forth battle with DeWitt’s Drew Durant in which neither led by more than two points. Wolber scored a takedown with 1:06 left in the third period, but Durant quickly escaped, then fended off Wolber the rest of the way to claim a 7-6 win.

Messer (8-3) and Troutman (6-1) each lost by pins in the second period to DeWitt’s Reece Westphal and Clinton’s Tyler Clark, respectively. For Clark, it was his third DeJarnatt title, and he was named the event’s outstanding wrestler for the upper weights (152-285).

Clinton won its fourth team title in the past 5 years.

AFC wins twice at Fulton: The Raiders picked

up a pair of wins in the Route 84 Holiday Tournament in Fulton, beating Fulton Unity 88-78 and Stockton 67-59.

Against Fulton Unity, the Raiders trailed 24-15 after one quarter before scoring 21 in the second and 29 in the third to mount a comeback. Stephen Brooke scored 20 points, hitting four 3-pointers.

Garrett Sanford added 19 points, Caleb Drew scored 14, and Adam Hart scored 12.

Eric Medenblik led Fulton Unity with 25 points.

Against Stockton, Brooke scored 22 points, Sanford had 19, and Hart added 18.

Fulton 63, Scales Mound 22: The Steamers led 22-7

after one quarter and 48-13 at halftime, cruising to a win in the Route 84 Holiday Tournament.

Tyler Bruggenwirth scored 14 points for Fulton, and Cody Sanderson added 12.

Erie sweeps: The Cardinals beat Warren 59-44 and Galena 58-44 in the Route 84 tournament.

A 21-point second quarter helped the Cardinals break things open in the win over Warren.

Justice Cole led Erie with 14 points, and Eric Miller added 11.

Erie trailed Galena by one at halftime and led 42-39 after three before outscoring Galena 16-5 in the fourth quarter.

Cole scored 16 in that game, while Miller Josh Hammer each added 11.

West Carroll splits: The Thunder went 1-1 in the Route 84 Holiday Tournament, beating Warren 48-40 and falling to East Dubuque 56-31.

West Carroll outscored Warren 17-6 in the second quarter to break open what had been a tie game after one quarter, then held on for a win as Warren scored 16 points in the fourth quarter.

Kaleb Plattenberger scored 11 points, while Dawson Wurster and Luke Jones each had 10.

Cougars take two: Eastland opened play in the United tournament in Monmouth with a pair of victories, 27-25 against West Central and 61-20 against United.

Ethan Christians scored nine points in the game against West Central. Eastland overcame a 22-18 deficit entering the final quarter to pull out the win.

Against United, the Cougars led 25-4 after the first quarter and 49-11 at halftime. Eric Langarica scored 19 points, all in the first half, to lead Eastland. Kaden Henze added 12 points.

Swimming

led 21-7 after one quarter and 48-9 by halftime on their way to an easy win at Forreston.

Cade Gorzny and Kyle Schmitt each hit three 3-pointers, and Gorzny led the Comets with 11 points. Brady Osborne added 10, and Schmitt scored nine.

Aquin 65, Oregon 52: for the Byron co-op, won The Hawks led 27-21 at the 200 individual medhalftime before Aquin ley and 100 breaststroke, outscored them 44-25 and was part of a pair of in the second half at relay wins at the Freeport Invitational.

Carlson took the IM in a time of 1:59.63. Sterling’s Jake Wike was fifth with a time of 2:17.36.

Carlson’s time of 1:02.53 was good for first in the breaststroke by more than 6 seconds.

Carlson teamed up with Wade Lyles of AFC, Sergio Solis and Everett Stoker to win the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:45.61 and the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:28.54.

Sterling’s Turner Morse was third in the 50 freestyle (24.49) and 100 freestyle (54.35). Wike also took fifth in the 500 freestyle (5:35.77).

Sterling’s 200 freestyle relay team of Trey Morse, Turner Morse, Arie Interone and Zach Wade took first with a time of 1:39.40.

Morrison’s Sam Norman took sixth in the 100 freestyle, with Newman’s Aiden Bollman eighth in that event.

Sterling took second as a team with 239 points.

Boylan won the event with 286. Byron was sixth, Morrison 10th, and Newman 11th.

Bowling Dukes 5th, Hawks 7th at LP: Dixon bowlers

took fifth overall at the LaSalle-Peru Cavalier Classic with a team score of 5,721, while Oregon was seventh with a score of 5,392. Rockford East was the team champion with 6,333.

Dixon’s Jarod White rolled a 1,301, including a team-high game of 255, to place fifth. Five of his six games on the day were over 200, only missing the 200-mark with a 191 in his first game.

Also for the Dukes, Branden Rex rolled a 1,127 and Tyler VanQuathem shot 1,124.

Oregon’s Austin Strite had the top series for the Hawks with a 1,176.

Justin Poole had a 1,167 series, and Kyle Lundquist had a 1,164.

Poole’s 246 was the high game for Oregon.

Men’s basketball

Skyhawks 3rd at Highland: Karson Arrenholz

had 16 points, 14 assists and no turnovers to lead Sauk Valley to a 94-69 victory against St. John’s Military Academy in the third-place game of the Highland tournament in Freeport.

The Skyhawks (5-6) placed six players in double figures scoring: Malcolm Mabry (17), Arrenholz (16), Sean Chislom (12), Lamont Patton (12), Riley Mehrens (12) and Laron Carr (11).

Patton (10), Chislom (9) and Mabry (8) also combined for 27 rebounds.

Paris Parham hit nine 3-pointers for 27 points to lead St. John’s.

Sauk Valley began the day with an 89-80 loss to Moberly. Arrenholz led the way with 21 points, six assists and just one turnover. He had 29 assists against just three turnovers in the tournament.

Chislom also had a big game with 19 points and 15 boards, while Carr (11 points) and Mabry (10) also scored in double digits.

Tracy Abrams scored a career-high 31 points and led Illinois in a 92-73 drubbing of Central Michigan on Saturday afternoon in Champaign.

Abrams scored 23 points in the first half and finished 7 of 8 from 3-point range on a day when he scored his 1,000th career point with Illinois (8-3), which outrebounded the Chippewas 49-25 and outscored them 34-14 in the paint. Leron Black played another compete game from the bench, scoring a career-high 21 points.

Marcus Keene led Central Michigan (8-3) with 25 points, and Braylon Rayson added 18.

Lynch tied his career high with 18 points, and his 11 rebounds were two off a career best. Murphy added 12 points and 10 rebounds for Minnesota.

The Huskies (4-5) lost for the fourth time in five games. They were led

by Marshawn Wilson’s 18 points, while Dontel Highsmith had 10.

Dixon residents Joshua Schumacher and Brendan Tunink will spend part of their Christmas break playing baseball at Disney World in Orlando, Fla.

Dixon duo earns spots off their travel teams SUN

t Tunink is a pitcher and outfielder for the Sterling Sharks, while Schumacher is a catcher, pitcher and shortstop for the Dixon Rebels, another local travel team that begins practice in January and plays games from about March through July, mostly in weekend tournaments.

Their road to Florida began at one of these weekend tournaments, the Quad City Slugfest, held in July. Tunink’s team, the Sharks, won first place, while Schumacher’s Rebels placed fifth. It was their individual play, however, that set them apart and on the path to Florida.

Select players from each tournament game were awarded MVP cards.

Those players were then eligible to compete in another event, held Aug. 13-14 in Wheeling. More than 100 players from all

over the Midwest were divided into eight teams, and played a total of five games over the 2 days.

Representatives from JP Sports and Event Management, who organize these weekend baseball tournaments, were on hand to evaluate the players competing.

The top 12 were chosen for the Disney event, and Tunink and Schumacher were among those to earn spots.

In Florida, they will play a minimum of five games against teams from across the country.

To prepare, the boys will spend a lot of time at the Schumacher farm, located just east of Dixon. There is an outdoor baseball diamond and batting cage, though access to those may be limited by the recent snowfall. There is other equipment inside a large shed, though, to help them stay sharp.

“Practicing all year long helps me get better and better,” Schumacher said.

Matthew Stafford ran for a go-ahead, 7-yard touchdown with 3:17 left after throwing two interceptions in the fourth quarter – one of which was returned for a score on the previous possession – and the Detroit Lions held on for a 20-17 win over the Chicago Bears on Sunday at Ford Field.

Matt Barkley completed two passes that put the Bears in a position to at least attempt a tying field goal in the final minute, but both were negated by penalties, and the Bears ended up turning the ball over on downs from the Detroit 44.

The NFC North-leading Lions (9-4) have won five straight and eight of nine, moving them a step closer to winning a division title for the first time in 23 years.

Chicago (3-10) has lost four of five.

Barkley, in the first road start of his career, perfectly led Cameron Meredith on a 31-yard TD to pull the Bears within three late in the third quarter.

Stafford was picked off twice after he threw only one interception the previous eight games.

NEW YORK – Lamar Jackson was trying to remember the last time he cried. He was pretty sure it involved losing a little league football game.

On Saturday night, Louisville’s spectacular sophomore quarterback found out winning can get a guy choked up, too.

Jackson became the first Louisville player to win the Heisman Trophy, beating out preseason favorite Deshaun Watson of Clemson despite some late-season struggles.

Watson, who finished third last season, was a distant second. Baker Mayfield finished third, and Oklahoma teammate and fellow finalist Dede Westbrook was fourth.

Michigan’s Jabrill Peppers was fifth.

Jackson, wearing a red velvet blazer with shiny black lapels and a black bow tie, said he could feel his heart pounding in his chest right before his name was announced.

He barely held it together while giving his acceptance speech, with the former Heisman winners standing behind him on stage.

“I almost cried,” Jackson said. “I never get emotional, but to have my name called and see all those great players ...”

Early in the season, Jackson leapt over a loaded field of Heisman contenders that included five of the top seven vote-getters from 2015 to become the front-runner. By the time he slowed down, nobody could catch him.

Jackson accounted for 51 touchdowns and averaged 410 yards per game in total offense in his first season as Louisville’s full-time starter.

“He surpassed everything I thought he could do,” Louisville coach Bobby Petrino said.

Jackson credited his mother, Felicia Jones, and said the trophy will go anywhere she decides to put it. Jones raised Jackson as a single mom and would put on football pads to help her son work on his game when he was a kid.

“Everything I do is for my mother,” Jackson said.

Jackson is the first Heisman winner to play on a team that lost its last two games of the regular season since Tim Brown of Notre Dame in 1987. He’s the first to enter the postseason without a chance to win the national title since Johnny Manziel of Texas A&M in 2012.

No matter. Jackson did so much before November it was difficult to deny him the award because of a couple of losses at the end.

“Each and every game should be a Heisman moment,” Jackson said.

He continues a recent trend of breakout stars winning the Heisman. He is the sixth player to win the award as either a redshirt freshman or sophomore, all since 2007.
