SAUK VALEY | ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

Our business is his business Director discusses ways to become partners in progress with local leaders BY PAM EGGEMEIER peggemeier@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5570 @pam_eggemeier

MORRISON – Before Jim Schultz would agree to lead the state’s economic development efforts last year, he needed reassurance that the process would change.

Gov. Bruce Rauner named Schultz director of the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity in February 2015, and a year later, the state had a new economic development arm and Schultz had a different job title. The governor announced Feb. 3 the creation, by executive order, of Intersect

Illinois, a privately funded nonprofit corporation that would use public-private partnerships to recruit business to the state. Schultz is its CEO. Schultz was in Morrison on Thursday to visit Whiteside County Economic Development Director Gary Camarano and other regional business leaders.

Schultz, an Effingham native, has been an agribusiness entrepreneur and private equity executive and has been involved in starting 40 businesses, two of which went public. A desire to give back was motivation for finally accepting Rauner’s offer, he said. BUSINESS continued on A44

DIXON CITY COUNCIL

Council meets the problem half-way City opts for 1-sided solution to bridge issue: Repair just the east rails BY RACHEL RODGERS rrodgers@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5529 @rj_rodgers

DIXON – The city will fix only the east side Galena Avenue Bridge railings, because the west side is in much better shape, the council decided Thursday. The cost to repair the corroded railings jumped from about $55,000 to about $200,000 last week, on top of the $269,000 to sandblast and repaint them once repairs are done. At a special meeting – and after more than an hour of debate – the council voted down a proposal to fix all four inner and outer railings, which would cost roughly $178,000. Exactly how much that will save is not yet known. Councilman Mitch Tucker said the “rusted, blown-out” steel on the east side had to be fixed, but the city could do without spending an extra $60,000 on the other side. The west railings aren’t showing the same deterioration as the east railings, which were not sealed properly and allowed water and corrosive material such as road salt to get inside, Tucker said.

STERLING – Just barely 2 years old, Anniah Rose Garcia was rather calm as doctors took her blood and did an ultrasound on her tummy Monday at CGH Medical Center. It was the first time she didn’t throw a fit. “She’s getting used to it, and I don’t know if that’s a bad thing, for her to be used to doctors and things being done to her in the hospital,” said her mom, Abbie Capp, 20.
