Unemployment rates were up throughout the Sauk Valley in November, despite holding steady statewide and dropping nationally
during that period. The jobless rate in Illinois was 8.3 percent last month, the same as it was in October. Nationally, the jobless rate dropped to 6.6 percent, from 7 percent, during that period.
Bureau County saw the greatest increase in the area, jumping from 8.1 to 9.0 percent from October to November. Lee County’s jobless rate rose to 9.0 percent in November, up from

Could city get with bike program?
Stars align for line dancers
Emulating Chicago bike-sharing plan could be part of streetscape project BY MATT MENCARINI mmencarini@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 529
Happenstance meeting spurs partnership with Moose Lodge Kimberly Watley/Special to SVM
Jared Wetzell leads a line dancing lesson for River Country Stomp at the Moose Lodge in Sterling. The upstart group quickly outgrew the dance floor at other establishments and since developed a great relationship with the lodge.
STERLING – Line dancers have had no local place to “Boot Scootin’ Boogie” for about 20 years, Linda Wolber and Bonnie Mathews recall. Their gathering place in Galt has long since closed. Most who dance say they would have to grapevine all the way to the Quad Cities, Chicago or the suburbs, but that was before River Country Stomp was founded in March.
All are grateful for a moment of happenstance that brought them together. Karyn Hollenbach and Victoria Hughes were at Champs Bar and Grill, dancing to songs that a country band was performing. Normally the pair would go to the suburbs, where line dancing bars are plentiful. Jared Wetzell of Milledgeville was at Champs that night, too.
Care to get in line? Every Thursday, dancers meet at Sterling Moose Family Center, 2601 East Lincolnway. A donation of $2 to the lodge is requested. All ages are welcome. For more information about River Country Stomp, call Karyn Hollenbach at 815-631-1649. For information about the Moose Lodge, call 815-625-0354.

walked up to the boy to check on him. He soon learned that the boy, a second-grader at Lincoln Elementary School, had missed the bus to get home. The boy lives near Jefferson Elementary, and so decided to walk the more than 2 miles home. Jacob instead persuaded the boy to come back to his house with him, where he called police. Dixon Police Officer Les Shaw showed up to Jacob’s home within minutes and made sure that Jefferson was notified about the whereabouts of its missing pupil. JACOB CONTINUED ON A4

DIXON – The mayor would like to see Dixon become more bicycle-friendly. Part of that could happen during the downtown streetscape project, Mayor Jim Burke said Friday. The mayor sent a letter to Ed Barsotti, executive director of the League of Illinois Bicyclists, on Dec. 18 to seek recommendations on bike rack styles and placement, in addition to soliciting Barsotti’s thoughts on a bikesharing proMayor gram for Dixon. Jim Burke Burke has followed the Chicago’s bike sharing, he said, and sees opportunities for something similar for Dixon residents Ed Barsotti that would also boost tourism. Chicago’s bike-sharing program, which is a program of the Chicago Department of Transportation called Divvy, consists of 4,000 bikes and 400 stations across the city, according to the program’s website. The bikes can be used during a 24-hour pass or by residents with an annual membership. “I think, if Dixon were to approach it like Chicago, it wouldn’t be as successful,” Barsotti said. But if the city looked at it as an element of tourism, he said, it could be good. On Friday, Barsotti sent Burke an email, recommending the city consider a bike rental program with a centralized location, rather than a sharing program. BIKE CONTINUED ON A4
