Lights, camera ... poignancy Young filmmakers tug on the holiday heartstrings BY CHRISTOPHER HEIMERMAN cheimerman@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5523 @CHeimerman_SVM
MORRISON – At the grizzled age of 17, Johnick Petry has realized less just might be more. The Morrison teen’s homegrown company, Sky Lantern Productions, is holding auditions for the short film “Snowflakes and Diamonds” on
Dec. 11 at Morrison Brethren in Christ Church. Petry, the director and producer, said shooting is planned for late December and January. You might remember him as the 14-year-old filmmaker who also acted in the 60-minute sci-fi feature film “Moments of Victory.” But he’d prefer you didn’t.
Holiday happenings, a different kind of Santah coming to town – and more news of the Sauk Valley entertainment scene: A9-11.

First among equals Math teacher cracks the formula to motivate students BY CHRISTOPHER HEIMERMAN cheimerman@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5523 @CHeimerman_SVM
OREGON – Whether or not Danyel Larsen is funny is immaterial. Same goes for math, the subject she teaches at Oregon High School. Nonetheless, she was pretty doggone funny while going over how to graph sin and cosine waves during her seventh-period honors pre-calculus class
Wednesday afternoon. “Why does ‘K’ stand for vertical shift, when ‘H’ is for horizontal shift?” Kelsey Handschuh asked. “Because it starts with a silent ‘K,’” Larsen said. “You know. Kuh-Vertical.” Then there was the debate over why Larsen kept drawing the unit circle over and over again on her transparency. “I can’t put it on the board,” she said. “I’d keep turning around. I’d get dizzy.” FORMULA CONTINUED ON A5

Tax hike ‘dead in the water’ BY BRENDEN WEST bwest@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5529 @BWest_SVM
DIXON – The good news for taxpayers? The Park Board isn’t going to ask voters for more money right now. The bad news, say board members? That just kicks the can down a deteriorating road. After months of deliberation, the board decided at its meeting Wednesday not to pursue a referendum to raise property taxes. Citing the possibility of Dixon School District’s pursuit of its own referendum in March, Park Board members said they doubted voters would also approve a park district levy increase to fix roads. The School Board won’t vote on whether to pursue a referendum until it decides whether to renovate or rebuild Dixon High. The board will discuss a visual plan of what renovations of the high school could look like at a meeting on Tuesday. TAX HIKE CONTINUED ON A5

We found valor, now you can, too Veterans books now available BY KATHLEEN A. SCHULTZ kschultz@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5535 @KathleenSchul10
Danyel Larsen teaches honors pre-calculus Wednesday at Oregon High School. Larsen, who’s taught in the district for 9 years, was honored three times during the month of October.
Isaac Mercer of Dixon, who now serves his community as a Lee County Board member, also served heroically as a sergeant in the Army infantry during the Korean War. He came home with a Silver Star, a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart, a veteran of fierce handto-hand combat with the enemy. Verne Pessman of Fulton not only survived one of the bloodiest battles of the Vietnam War, but he also ensured that many of his fellow soldiers made it home, too, firing a steady barrage at the Viet Cong for 2 days straight, until “the barrel of his gun nearly melted.” He returned to a loving wife, but little fanfare; nonetheless, his patriotism is undimmed to this day.
