CHICAGO – Former Illinois Rep. Lane Evans, a Vietnam War-era Marine who fought for veterans’ rights during his 24 years in the U.S. House, has died after a long fight with Parkinson’s disease. The Sterling High School volleyball team celebrates its first sectional championship since 1981 on Thursday at Illinois Valley Central High School. Phil Hare met Lane Evans in 1976, when both were volunteers in support of the presidential run made by then-U.S. Sen. Fred Harris, an Oklahoma Democrat. At the time, Hare didn’t really have political aspirations – he was a union steward working for the Seaford Clothing Factory in Rock Island, and his main concern was heavy job losses at the plant.

L o w e l l Jacobs, vice chairman of WhiteLane side County Evans Democrats, knew Evans well while Jacobs was chairman of the local party headquarters. “Lane always came to my house for political rallies, and as we both got more involved in party politics, we became very good friends,” Jacobs said.
Hare and Evans became fast friends, and their paths crossed again in 1980, during Sen. Edward Kennedy’s run for the White Phil House. Hare Hare ran as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention. “I finished dead-last, and I told Lane that he should run for something, because I wasn’t having any luck with this,” Hare said. “I told him that if he did it, I would help him.” ALLIES CONTINUED ON A3

DIXON – The National Watercolor Traveling Exhibit will open from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at The Next Picture Show, 113 W. First St. The exhibit, which will run through Dec. 31, features about 30 paintings from the National Watercolor Society. Dixon is one of only five stops for the exhibit. Admission is free.
DIXON – Woodlawn Arts Academy will present Disney’s “The Jungle Book Kids” in Jerry Mathis Theater at Sauk Valley Community College. Show times are 7 p.m. today, 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday, and 2 p.m. Sunday. General admission tickets for $5 are on sale at the academy, 3807 Woodlawn Road. Cash or checks only.
DIXON – The Catholic Women’s Club of St. Patrick Church will have its annual holiday bazaar at the church’s Holloway Center, 612 Highland Ave., from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and from 9 a.m. to noon Sunday. Handcrafted items, decorations, baked goods, a candy store, and a re-gifting store will be featured. Proceeds will go to local charities.
CLINTON, Iowa – A concert Sunday by the Clinton Symphony orchestra will include a piece written by Mark Bressler, conductor of the Dixon Municipal Band and a teacher at Sauk Valley Community College. The performance will begin at 3 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, 439 Third Ave. S. Tickets cost $15 for adults, $5 for students, and free for eighth-graders and younger.
