TOP 5 Fuel Tax funds drying up ROCK FALLS

Extra sales tax factored into roads budgets BY PAM EGGEMEIER peggemeier@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5570 @pam_eggemeier

ROCK FALLS – Financial planning for city road projects is never easy, but the state is making it even tougher this year. Cities have two main revenue sources for funding road and sidewalk projects – monthly

payments from the state’s Motor Fuel Tax fund, and money from the Local Option Sales Tax. For Rock Falls, that paints a classic good news, bad news scenario. The gas tax disbursements stopped in June, when Gov. Bruce Rauner froze three of the seven main revenue funds that the state allocates to cities. The local cut for gambling, and spe-

cial use tax distributions also are being held. In Illinois, motorists are taxed 19 cents a gallon for gasoline and an additional 2.5 cents for diesel fuel. The Illinois Department of Transportation distributes 49.10 percent of the tax money to cities, based on population. ROADS CONTINUED ON A4

School board member resigns mid-term A replacement could be appointed, or board can solicit public interest BY JERMAINE PIGEE jpigee@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5525 @JPigee84

DIXON – After being on the School Board for 2 years, Terry Shroyer has stepped down. Shroyer, also the recreation and safety director for the Dixon Park District, had little to say about his resignation when contacted Thursday. “It’s a personal reason,” Shroyer said. “I have no other comment.”

Shroyer, who was not at Wednesday’s board meeting, was elected to a 4-year term in spring of 2013. He was up for re-elecTerry tion in 2017. Shroyer “He thought hard about it because he is committed to the School District and committed

to the things we are doing,” said Margo Empen, superintendent. “It was a hard decision and we hated to see him go, because he was a valuable board member.” Officials have 45 days to fill Shroyer’s spot on the sevenmember board. Whoever is selected will take over the remaining term. The board can either appoint someone, or they can ask Dixon residents to submit letters of interest. “The first thing they have to

do is to see if there is anyone to appoint,” Empen said. “The second thing is to interview and appoint someone after that.” If 45 days should go by, Bob Sondgeroth, the regional superintendent, would select someone on the board’s behalf. Whoever replaces Shroyer will be the third new face on the board this year. Jill Stoker and Scott Johnson were elected to the board in the April election.
